Phil Star estimates Lyle Howe’s appeal will be heard in 2015 based on Lyle Howe the court metro file schedule and over 4,000 pages of evidence.
Suspended Halifax lawyer Lyle Howe has been released from prison pending an appeal of his sexual-assault conviction, which his defence lawyer says will likely take place next year. In the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal Thursday, Justice J. Edward Scanlan granted the application to release Howe on bail with conditions, stating the application was not “frivolous” and the Crown did not oppose the release. When asked by reporters if the day was a successful one, Howe’s lawyer, Phil Star, said, “Very much so.” In court, Scanlan pointed out it was unusual that a motion of direction had not been filed suggesting dates for the appeal hearing, but Star said because there’s “co-counsel involved” — Brian Greenspan of
Toronto — he needed to find out when Greenspan was available. Scanlan instructed the defence to file its motion on or before Aug. 27. Star said Howe’s conditions are that he must remain in Nova Scotia unless travelling to Toronto to see Greenspan, be under a curfew unless in the company of one his sureties, have no contact with certain individuals and return to custody the day before his appeal is heard. Crown attorney Mark Scott
said he did not oppose Howe’s release because he was satisfied Howe’s detention was “not required in the public interest.” On July 30, Howe was given a three-year prison sentence when a jury found him guilty in May of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman. Scott said Howe is not a flight risk because of his roots in the community, and noted there were no breaches or failure to appear throughout the court process. Howe’s request for bail wasn’t “frivolous” because Scott said his appeal is based on the “arguable” issue put forward by Star that a defence of “honest but mistaken belief in consent” should be put to a jury, and not just the issue of consent, which Howe’s original trial revolved around. However, Scott said the fact that the Crown acknowledged there was an arguable issue has nothing to do with the overall success of the appeal, or whether they agree the “honest but mistaken” defence should be heard by a jury. Store owner taking action after lottery ticket thefts HALEY RYAN

The owner of a Dartmouth Kwik-Way plans on changing his luck after his lottery tickets were stolen for the second time
in eight months. Vijay Agnihotri said his store on Windmill Road had been open for a short time on Thursday morning when he realized the tray of lottery tickets had been taken while he was not looking. He went to the pawn shop next door to check their surveillance video and reported the robbery after the tape showed a man leaving with the tickets. “Nobody can do anything,” Agnihotri said. “Even if you catch him you are (likely) not

eight months ago someone stole $200 worth of tickets. “This action has happened to four or five stores in my area,” he said. “So they should have some insurance system.” Atlantic Lottery Corporation spokeswoman Carla Bourque said their retailer policy agreement states the tickets become the responsibility of a retailer once they are bought. Tickets that have been activated for sale can be traced if a store owner reports the date and number of his ticket pack-
age, Bourque said. She could not comment on whether ALC has discussed insurance for business owners. “I would assume that would be a major decision should we choose to do so,” she said. The next time he gets lottery tickets, Agnihotri said he will place photocopies of the tickets on the counter or have one of each ticket on display and keep the others with him. “I have to do it because I’m losing. Natural causes. Man convicted in confinement case dies in N.S. prison A man convicted in the case of a Nova Scotia teen who was kidnapped, chained and sexually assaulted, has died in a Nova Scotia prison. Spokeswoman Shannon Oickle of Springhill Institution says John Leonard MacKean, 65, died of natural causes on Wednesday. MacKean began serving a two-year sentence on June 24 for sexual assault and for communicating for the purpose of obtaining sexual services from a person under 18. The Correctional Service of Canada says it will review the circumstances of his death, which has been reported to the police and the coroner. The Correctional Service says in a news release that all cases involving the deaths of inmates are the subject of a review and notification is always given to the police and the coroner. MacKean was sentenced for sexually assaulting a 16-yearold boy, who testified he was blindfolded and chained to a bed during the ordeal. The Lower Sackville man was also sentenced to three years’ probation.

Another man accused in the case was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison. David James LeBlanc pleaded guilty to kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, uttering threats and breach of conditions. In court, Crown attorney Lloyd Tancock said MacKean did nothing to assist the frightened young man, who testified he was held for eight days at a cabin in Upper Chelsea, about 130 kilometres southwest of Halifax. Man imprisoned for sex assault of girl, 4 28-month term. Prince Edward Island businessman had been hoping for a conditional sentence A Prince Edward Island businessman has been sentenced to 28 months in prison for sexually assaulting a four-year-old Dartmouth girl more than 20 years ago. Justice Patrick Murray of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court said he hoped to send a strong message of deterrence in sentencing Stephen Nicholas
Taweel, 55. “I have found the seriousness of the offence and (Taweel’s) degree of responsibility warrant a federal term in prison,’’ Murray said. The Crown had recommended a sentence of three to four years in prison, citing Taweel’s persistence and position of authority as aggravating factors in the offence. “Sexual violence against children and young people deserves a strong response from the court,” Crown attorney Scott Morrison said outside court. “Today, Justice Murray delivered that strong message.” Defence lawyer Mark Knox
had argued for a conditional sentence, pointing to Taweel’s lack of a criminal record and his strong standing in the community. A pre-sentence report provided to the court contained 28 letters of reference from Taweel’s family and friends, as well as members of the Charlottetown business community, An assessment concluded Taweel was at low risk to reoffend. Morrison told the court the victim’s life has been destroyed. “He (Taweel) showed complete disregard for the victim’s dignity and sexual autonomy. He destroyed her life for little

Veteran still fights for service dog access Retired Capt. Medric Cousineau. Long Walk to Sanity may be over, but there’s more work to be done for those who need the dogs, Cousineau says RUTH DAVENPORT
ruth.davenport@metronews.ca
One year ago, Retired Capt. Medric Cousineau was just a guy taking his dog for a walk — a really, really long walk. Today, the retired Air Force navigator is still on the move, criss-crossing the country to maintain the public awareness and fundraising efforts for service dogs, started by his Long Walk to Sanity from Halifax to Ottawa last year. “A lot of stuff’s happened in a year,” said Cousineau during a coffee break in Halifax this week, service dog Thai lying quietly at his feet. “Federally, provincially, municipally… we’re connecting with veterans and helping them. been so successful.” Service dogs aren’t a recognized form of treatment and so don’t qualify for federal government funding. However, since last summer, a lot has changed. In May, Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino announced a two-year pilot study of service dogs and their impact on the treatment of PTSD. In Nova Scotia, Cousineau is working with the provincial government to ensure that a person with invisible disabilities who uses a service dog receives the same protection as a blind person using a guide dog. “Both of us are disabled Nova Scotians. Both live with a thing called a disability tax certificate, and both of us are treated differently,” he said. “So they’re working on it.” Cousineau’s political activism has helped increase pub-
lic awareness, and growing numbers of veterans are reaching out to Cousineau’s organization, Paws Fur Thought, for help. Thirty people have been matched with their fuzzy-faced miracle workers in the last year. Breeders in Canada and the U.S. have donated puppies for training, and trainers are stepping up to prepare both dogs and people for their new lives together. “Not everybody is comfortable once they understand what’s entailed in getting a service dog,” said Cousineau. “Are you comfortable being the centre of attention in public? You’re the only guy in Walmart with a dog; you tend to get a lot of questions.” People and businesses have been generous with their dollars, but Cousineau says he needs corporate sponsorship to help the thousands more still in need. “As fast as I can raise the money, I can start more dogs into the process … because the need is huge,” he said, adding that 99 cents of every dollar is devoted to the cost of acquiring and training dogs.

With truck on fire, quick-acting driver dumps his volatile cargo ‘Live grenade.’ Driver braves smoke to get truck off highway and jettison liquid oxygen A potentially deadly drive was averted this morning on Highway 104 outside Oxford, thanks to the quick thinking of a hazardous material driver. At 7:56 a.m. on Thursday, Cumberland RCMP were notified of a transport truck carrying a full tank of highly volatile liquid oxygen on fire on Exit 7 in the eastbound lane. “On route, we stopped traffic back a kilometre from the scene,” said Const. Travise Dow. “All we could secure was in the front.” The Oxford Fire Department, paramedics and the Department of Transportation

first name, Jonathan — took the exit, unhooked the trailer and then entered the smokefilled truck and drove it away
from the hazardous load. “I still don’t know what to think,” Jonathan said. “My biggest thing since I started hauling this stuff is to think of it as a live grenade. For this to happen, I’m happy it happened in the best location, with an off-ramp right there to get it away from traffic.” Traffic that morning was normal for the 104, Dow said, and Jonathan’s quick thinking helped minimize the threat to public safety. “The driver took protective measures to minimize the damage to the surrounding area and the public,” Dow said. “He did a great job.” Cumberland News

The average annual number of sexual assault complaints since 2000, from full-time and reserve members, to the military police, according to a Maclean’s/ L’actualité investigation
Metro in Toronto
One in 13 female full-time members of the Canadian Forces has been sexually assaulted during military service, Statistics Canada has found. The statistics agency surveyed 6,700 full-time regular members of the Forces, with a proportional percentage of women and men to the military enrolment figures, from April to August 2013. Of the women surveyed, 7.6 per cent said they had been sexually assaulted “while either deployed on Canadian Forces operation, at a Canadian Forces Workplace or by a Canadian Forces member or civilian Department of National Defence employee.” The figure jumped to 15.6 per cent when including women who reported they’d been touched sexually against their will — also in
the course of their service in the military. Respondents were instructed that “sexual assault” was defined for the survey as “someone forcing you or attempting to force you into any unwanted sexual activity, by threatening you, holding you down or hurting you in some way.” The other category, “unwanted sexual touching,” was defined as “unwanted touching or grabbing, kissing or fondling.” Of the men surveyed, about 0.2 per cent said they’d been sexually assaulted in connection with their work in the military. However, Statistics Canada cautions that that number is low enough to be at risk of sampling error. When including the number of men who said they’d experienced unwanted sexual touching, the number rises to 0.8 per cent — which
would translate to about 500 of the forces’ 55,500 male soldiers. That number is statistically valid, according to the statistics agency. The Canadian Forces Mental Health Survey 2013 was conducted by Statistics Canada in conjunction with the Department of National Defence. It surveyed currently serving members only, and would not have included anyone who was sexually assaulted and left the military before the survey was conducted. The survey covered many aspects of mental health and trauma. Some results concerning mental health and alcohol use were publicly released this week. A section on military sexual trauma was also included in the questionnaire. Metro requested and received a breakdown of the sexual trauma results.
University of Ottawa PhD candidate Ashley Bickerton is studying military sexual assaults. Bickerton said the sexual trauma data was welcome, but criticized the definition of sexual assault used in the survey because most people — and the law — consider “unwanted touching or grabbing, kissing or fondling” to be sexual assault. According to Statistics Canada, that definition was used because it was consistent with surveys done in the past and would produce comparable results. Retired justice Marie Deschamps is conducting an external review into sexual assault policy and procedures, training and culture in the Canadian Forces. The results of that review are expected next spring. It was launched after a Maclean’s/ L’actualité investigation that included multiple interviews
Civilian courts
Sexual assault was investigated and tried by civilian police and courts until 1998, and some would like to see it back in the civilian system. • “Civilian police are able to investigate regardless of the rank that applies,” said Michel Drapeau, a former Canadian Forces member who is now a lawyer who represents soldiers who’ve been sexually assaulted. Drapeau is critical of the ongoing external review, because it excludes any review of the military police and justice system. • “With somebody like Russell Williams on the base, military police may be very intimidated to knock on the door of a colonel. And a victim may be very intimated to report to the police or the prosecutor an action by a senior officer.”

DND: ‘It’s disturbing’ The Department of National Defence made psychiatrist and mental health adviser to the Canadian Forces command Col. Rakesh Jetly available for an interview with Metro. Rakesh said statistics were gathered as part of a large survey on mental health meant to help the military better understand the “burden and the impact of mental illness” and trauma for its members. DND has not yet analyzed the sexual trauma data and had not yet seen it until asked about it by Metro. Some analysis of the data will be presented in November, he said. “We’ve asked about different kinds of trauma, sexual trauma is one type of trauma — because we want to see, first of all, how often does it occur and we want to see its relationship to the illnesses,” he said. “As a senior officer in the Canadian Forces, it’s concerning to see numbers — it almost doesn’t matter what the numbers are — it’s disturbing … that sexual trauma within our workplace does occur.” Rakesh couldn’t speculate on why the numbers are as high as they are, what they say about the military’s culture, the use of military over civilian police to investigate, or whether new female recruits would be informed of the new statistics.

Ex-Tory staffer Sona found guilty of fraud; judge feels he ‘likely’ had help in robocalls Robocalls scandal. Michael Sona’s ‘apparent arrogance and selfimportance’ were his downfall, judge says Michael Sona fell victim to his own “apparent arrogance and self-importance,” a judge said Thursday as he convicted the former Conservative staffer of using automated phone calls to misdirect voters in the 2011 federal election. But in passing judgment, Superior Court Justice Gary Hearn added his voice to a growing chorus of those who believe the so-called robocalls affair was not the work of a single rogue operator acting alone. Sona, 25, the only one ever to be charged in the case, hung his head in the Guelph, Ont., courtroom. The judge rejected the inconsistent and “largely selfserving” testimony of the
Misleading voters
By now, the saga of the Guelph robocalls is well known. On the morning of May 2, 2011, automated phone calls were set up to target voters in Guelph — most of them Liberal supporters — with misleading instructions on where to vote. • The company that made the calls, Edmontonbased tech firm RackNine, was hired by a customer who used fake names, including the infamous “Pierre Poutine,” a disposable pay-as-you-go cellphone and prepaid credit cards. Sona’s “apparent arrogance and selfimportance” were his downfall, he added. Sona, who faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, returns to court for a sentencing hearing on Oct. 17, at which point “we’ll be making very forceful submissions on sentencing,” said Crown attorney Croft Michaelson — a warning, perhaps, to political operatives of all stripes watching in Ottawa. Conservative party spokesman Cory Hann was quick to react to the verdict, issuing a statement within minutes of the decision. “As we’ve said all along, the Conservative party ran a clean and ethical campaign,” he said. Police clash with protesters days after black teen killed Ferguson, Mo. Residents complained of heavyhanded police presence Police used tear gas and smoke bombs to repel crowds who threw Molotov cocktails during another violent night on the streets of a St. Louis suburb in the wake of Saturday’s fatal shooting of unarmed 18-yearold Michael Brown. Hours earlier, the police chief had said race relations were the top priority in the town, where a white police officer fatally shot the black teen. Authorities have vowed to reach across the racial, economic and generational divide in a community in search of answers. In the streets of Ferguson, though, the polite dialogue heard at community forums and news conferences is nowhere to be found.
Instead, officers from multiple departments in riot gear and in military equipment have clashed nightly with protesters, who chant, “Hands up, don’t shoot.” Wednesday saw more tense confrontations and further volleys of tear gas from police — this time paired with smoke bombs in response to flaming projectiles and other objects lobbed from the crowd. Protesters faced heavily armed police who at times trained weapons on them from armoured trucks. Two reporters said they were detained by police for not clearing out quickly enough from a McDonald’s where they were working, near the protests but away from the more volatile areas. The two, who work for The Washington Post and The Huffington Post, respectively, were released without any charges. Both say they were assaulted but not seriously hurt. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Brazil. Presidential race changes after plane crash kills top contender Brazil’s political landscape was being redrawn Thursday, a day after a small plane crash killed a top presidential candidate less than two months before the election. The death of politician Eduardo Campos in a plane that smashed into a white-collar neighbourhood in the port city of Santos is reshuffling the candidates and voter preferences, and could further complicate president Dilma Rousseff’s reelection, analysts say. Political observers say Cam-
pos’ socialist party is expected to declare his running mate Marina Silva, one of the country’s most popular politicians, as its presidential candidate in the coming days. “If she runs, it becomes a more competitive race. It increases the likelihood of a runoff happening,” said Joao Augusto de Castro Neves, Latin America director for the Eurasia Group consulting firm. “It would be a pretty close race to see who is going to be the runner up.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
City streets not for ‘tanks and M16s’ A Democratic congressman plans to introduce a bill to restrict a Defence Department program that provides machine-guns and other surplus military equipment for free to local law enforcement agencies across the U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson said the legislation is in response to the death of an unarmed teenager who was shot by a police officer in a St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Mo. The bill comes as members of Congress have called for the Justice Department to investigate the shooting. Johnson said city streets should be a place for businesses and families, “not tanks and M16s.” He said a Pentagon program that transfers surplus military equipment to state and local law enforcement has led to police agencies resembling paramilitary forces. Man dies after shooting outside concert for peace Authorities say a man was shot and killed outside a Philadelphia concert being held to promote peace and stem violence in the city. Police said the gunfire happened at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday outside the Dell Music Center in the city’s Fairmount Park. Officials said the 20-yearold man was arriving at the “Philly Support Philly: Peace on the Streets” concert when he got into an argument with someone in the parking lot. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

after a record 13.26 inches of rain fell between midnight and 9:30 a.m. The latest iteration of wild weather hit the northeast Tuesday night and lingered through Wednesday.
The hardest hit areas, Long Island’s Suffolk County and the towns of Islip and Brookhaven, declared states of emergency. Myanmar salvage team dives for massive old bell EVERYTHING YOU WANT - EVERY OCCASION dartmouthcrossing.com
FA C T O R Y S T O R E
Divers attached to safety ropes plunged into waters south of Myanmar’s old capital, Yangon, as part of renewed efforts to retrieve a bronze bell that has been lying for centuries at the confluence of three rivers. The 270-ton bell, believed one of the largest ever cast, was made on the order of King Dhammazedi in 1476 and donated to Shwedagon pagoda. In the early 1600s, it was stolen by Portuguese despot Philip de Brito, but his rickety vessel sank where the Yangon and Bago rivers meet
the Pazundaung creek. Private and foreign groups have for years tried to retrieve the historic treasure, believed to be buried deep beneath heavy silt. They have been deterred in part by murky waters and torrential currents. The salvage team conists of about 70 people, including 10 divers from the country’s Myeik archipelago, famous for their ability to dive without external breathing equipment. The project will last up to 45 days and cost up to $200,000. The Associated Press

Medical pot OK’d in B.C. in many forms Marijuana. B.C. Appeals court rules medical pot can be used in oils, cookies and teas following constitution ruling British Columbia’s highest court is green-lighting medical marijuana in everything from oils and cookies to teas in a ruling that finds federal health laws limiting weed consumption to the dried variety is unconstitutional. The B.C. Appeal Court released its 2-1 decision on Thursday stating that medical marijuana access regulations infringe on the charter rights of people requiring other forms of cannabis to treat illnesses. The ruling upheld a decision by a lower court judge over the case of Owen Smith, a Victoria man who
was charged in 2009 with possession for trafficking of THC — marijuana’s active compound — while working as head baker for the Cannabis Buyers Club of Canada. Smith challenged the law by arguing some patients want to consume their marijuana medicine in butters, brownies, cookies and teas, claiming the right to administer the drug in other forms is fundamental. His lawyer Kirk Tousaw, who also represents other medical marijuana-related litigants, said his client is pleased the court will allow patients to decide what mode of ingestion works best for their particular symptoms and conditions. “How many people out there really think that a critically and chronically ill member of their family shouldn’t be entitled to eat a medical marijuana cookie if that relieves their pain?” Tousaw said in an interview.

“We’re talking about the right of patients to find some relief from their very serious symptoms and conditions. It’s about time our government stop wasting our money trying to prevent people from doing that.” The Appeal Court ruled its judgement may be suspended for one year in order to allow parliament time to amend the regulations to ensure they are constitutional. Health Minister Rona Ambrose was not available for comment, although the Ministry said it is considering its options. The Canadian Press

Amsterdam. Dutch Santa sidekick to have makeover Amsterdam’s mayor and the organizers of a large children’s winter festival have unveiled plans to overhaul the image of “Black Pete” — the sidekick to the Dutch Santa Claus — after protests that the character exhibited racist elements. Mayor Eberhard van der Laan said Thursday that Pete’s appearance will be changed over several years from his current blackface to make him look like he has been merely covered with soot from going down chimneys. Black Pete has become the subject of protests in the Netherlands. Opponents say he is a caricature of an African slave carried over from colonial times, and is usually portrayed by white people wearing black-
face makeup, bold red lipstick and frizzy Afro wigs. A large majority of the Netherlands’ mostly white population says Pete is a positive figure and denies any racial insult. Last month an Amsterdam court agreed with findings by a Dutch discrimination that Black Pete’s look is offensive. In the Dutch tradition, Sinterklaas arrives on a steamboat laden with gifts, accompanied by numerous Black Petes. More than 250,000 people attend the celebration in Amsterdam alone. Despite the regional influence of Amsterdam, other towns, business and individuals may not want to change his look, the mayor said. THe associated press

Liberia. Which patients get untested Ebola drug? Liberian officials faced a difficult choice Thursday: Deciding which handful of Ebola patients will receive an experimental drug that could prove life-saving, ineffective or even harmful. ZMapp, the untested Ebola drug, arrived in the West African country late Wednesday. A day later, no one had yet received the treatment, which officials said would go to three people. With more than 1,060 deaths and 1,975 sickened, the Ebola outbreak is already the deadliest ever. And the World Health Organization said Thursday that there is evidence those figures may “vastly underestimate the magnitude of the outbreak.” The UN health agency said it was prepared for the crisis to continue for months. The outbreak has overwhelmed the already strained health systems in West Africa and raised questions about whether authorities are doing enough to respond. There is no licensed treatment for Ebola, a virus trans-

Man removes flag linked to militants A man took down a black flag with Arabic letters he’s been flying outside his Garwood, N.J., home for 10 years, after complaints arose on Twitter about its association with Islamic militants. Mark Dunaway told News 12 New Jersey that the flag says: “There is only one God. It is Allah. And the Prophet Muhammad is his messenger.” Dunaway said Muslims in America “face hatred,” but the Twitter comments were the first time he had ever heard complaints about the flag. He said his flag has nothing to do with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group, which has adopted the banner as it fights in Iraq. Some neighbours were concerned that people want to burn the flag. “The comments people are making are more frightening than the flag he put up,” Diane Figueiredo said.

The group of neighbours surveyed the destruction wreaked on their residential complex by Israeli bombardment, with building after building flattened or punctured by shells. The men then began to voice something almost never heard out loud in Gaza: Criticism of its Hamas rulers. Exhausted by a month of pounding by Israel’s military — on top of seven years of stifling closure of the tiny Mediterranean coastal strip — they questioned Hamas’s handling of the crisis and the wisdom of repeatedly going to war with Israel. “We do not want to be bombarded every two or three years. We want to lead a good life: Sleep well, drink well and eat well,” said Ziad Rizk, a 37-year-old father of two, a cigarette dangling from his mouth. He stared at the damaged apartment building where he lived. His sofa and a blue baby carriage were perched precariously on a tilting concrete slab that was his floor. It is impossible to say how widespread such discontent is among Gaza’s 1.8 million residents. Under Hamas rule, it’s rare and dangerous to share even as much as a hint of criti-
cism of the government with outsiders. Still, the men’s boldness in voicing their opinions could be a telling sign that some Gazans see Hamas as weakened. It points to how desperate many Gazans have become after the most ruinous of three bouts of major Hamas-Israel violence since the militant group overran the territory in 2007. More than 1,900 Palestinians have been killed, mostly civilians, nearly 10,000 wounded and some 250,000 displaced since fighting started July 8. Quoted
“How can we have a war every two or three years? Is that a life?” Loay Kafarnah, taxi driver
Significantly, a Hamas rally last week attracted 2,000 to 3,000 people, a low number compared to its routinely massive rallies, particularly considering it was held at a time when the group is at war with Israel. Hamas has ruled with an iron fist since it took over Gaza, expelling the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. It does not tolerate dissent, detains critics and carries out extrajudicial executions of alleged spies for Israel. It has filled government departments with loyalists and is particularly intolerant of any criticism of its handling of the conflict with Israel. It seeks to block unauthorized media
coverage of its military wing. The men who spoke with The Associated Press were all friends and neighbours who live in the Abraj al-Nada, or AlNada Towers, a collection of apartment buildings that was hit hard by Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling on July 17 in the Gaza district of Beit Lahiya. Their grumbling is in part born from Gaza’s increasing economic hardship. Unemployment runs at around 50 per cent. The Hamas government owes workers several months’ back pay. The seven-year blockade by Israel and Egypt has choked businesses and jobs. “We have put up with a great deal. They take us to war, fire rockets on Israel from outside our homes and invite destruction to our homes. Fine, but now what?” said a teacher in his late 20s, who did not want to be named for fear of retaliation. “Does anyone in the government know what happened to us? Shouldn’t they come offer us help?” Rizk said he had hoped government officials would be there to take details from residents to offer assistance or future compensation. “But I have been wasting my time,” he said. Even as they shared their views, the men hedged their opinions. They never, for example, expressed a desire to see Hamas removed from power or abandon armed struggle against Israel. Toronto’s Ford saga
Top cop accepts written apology Toronto’s police chief accepted a written apology from Mayor Rob Ford’s brother on Thursday, after a public dispute over comments the chief called “false and slanderous.” Chief Bill Blair had threatened legal action after Coun. Doug Ford publicly accused him of leaking information
about an investigation involving the mayor as “payback.” Doug Ford had suggested two weeks ago that Blair helped leak information, after a newspaper report cited sources saying police were preparing to subpoena the mayor to testify at a preliminary hearing for his friend Alexander (Sandro) Lisi, who is facing drug and extortion charges. Ford said that the leak was politically motivated. The Canadian Press

The São Paulo State Public Defender’s Office says in a statement the shackles violated the woman’s “honour and intimacy.” Paula Paulenas, a press officer with the public defender’s office, said that the former inmate was eight months pregnant when she was arrested in 2011. Williams was in early stages of Parkinson’s, his wife says Incurable disease. ‘Robin’s sobriety was intact, and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles,’ said his wife Susan Schneider Robin Williams was in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease at the time of his death, his wife said Thursday. In a statement, Susan Schneider said that Williams, 63, was struggling with depression, anxiety and the Parkinson’s diagnosis when he died Monday in his Northern California home. Authorities said he committed suicide. “Robin’s sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of Parkinson’s disease, which he was not yet ready to share publicly,” Schneider said. The Marin County Sheriff’s Department, which said Williams hanged himself, is conducting toxicology tests and interviews before issuing a final ruling. Lt. Keith Boyd of the Marin County Sheriff’s Department did not return phone calls and email messages from The Associated Press seeking
comment on Schneider’s statement. Williams’ death shocked fans and friends alike, despite his candour about decades of struggle with substance abuse and mental health. With Parkinson’s, Williams faced shouldering yet another challenge. Parkinson’s disease is an incurable nervous system disorder that involves a loss of brain cells controlling movement. Tremors, sometimes starting out in just one hand, are among the early symptoms. It can also cause rigid, halting walking, slowed speech and sometimes dementia. Symptoms worsen over time and can often be treated with drugs. Actor Michael J. Fox, who has long had the disease and is known for his efforts to fund research into it, tweeted that he was stunned to learn Williams had early symptoms. Parkinson’s affects about 1 million people across the U.S., 6 million globally. The cause isn’t known but genes are thought to play a role. Schneider said that those who loved Williams are taking solace in the outpouring of affection and admiration for him.

Intel teams up with actor Michael J. Fox to fight Parkinson’s Neurodegenerative disease. Computing giant is using ‘big data’ in bid to improve research and treatment U.S. computing giant Intel recently announced it was joining an effort to battle Parkinson’s disease with new big data and wearable technologies to improve research and treatment. Intel said it would work with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research — created by the Back to the Future Canadian-American actor — on the effort to fight the neurodegenerative brain disease second only to Alzheimer’s in worldwide prevalence. The research will use “a new big data analytics platform that detects patterns in participant data collected from wearable technologies used to monitor symptoms,” an Intel statement said.

“This effort is an important step in enabling researchers and physicians to measure progression of the disease and to speed progress toward breakthroughs in drug development.” The statement added that by collecting and analyzing data from thousands of individuals, such as slowness of movement, tremor and sleep quality, researchers can get a better picture of the progression of the disease. The research will use wearables that “can unobtrusively gather and transmit objective, experiential data in real time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” according to the statement. “Nearly 200 years after

In this June 11 file photo, taxi drivers gather after a protest drive against the competition from Internet and mobile applications designed for calling cabs, in Berlin, Germany. Berlin taxi drivers are now celebrating a decision by authorities to ban the ridesharing service Uber from operating in the city because of safety concerns. The company operates in four other German cities: Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Duesseldorf. In a decree Wednesday, Berlin authorities said they wouldn’t tolerate Uber putting customers at risk by allowing them to ride in cars that hadn’t been checked, and with drivers who weren’t vetted or properly insured. The argument echoes that of established cab companies who claim Uber’s appbased services, which offer limousines and pickups by private drivers, dodge rules that ordinary taxi firms have to abide by. As is usual the court did not provide reasons.

Parkinson’s disease was first described by Dr. James Parkinson in 1817, we are still subjectively measuring Parkinson’s disease largely the same way doctors did then,” said Todd Sherer, the foundation’s chief executive. “Data science and wearable computing hold the potential to transform our ability to capture and objectively measure patients’ actual experience of disease, with unprecedented implications for Parkinson’s drug development, diagnosis and treatment.” Robin Williams’ wife recently said that her husband was battling with the early stages of Parkinson’s at the time of his suicide.

Aug. 30 will be a must-watch for the groundbreaking interviews they did, and videos they showed. Before digital killed the TV video star. Oh snap! Snapchat is a growing thing. Many dismiss Snapchat as a frivolous social media tool for tweens. But it’s growing up. Point is, all social media matures. So adults and brands, time to start paying attention! And the live-tweet is officially a thing. Among the words Britain’s Oxford University Press has added to its online Oxford Dictionaries is “live-tweet” — the act of posting comments about an event on Twitter as it is taking place. Brawny bash needs brains Synopsis
Reel Guys
The tough-as-nails Expendables are back. A mission to stop a shipment of bombs brings grizzled mercenaries Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner (Dolph Lundgren), Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Caesar (Terry Crews) face to face with their toughest adversary yet, arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson). Determined to bring down Stonebanks, Ross retires the old-timers and recruits a fresh group of soldiers, but he may find his old dogs have some new tricks. • Richard: ••••• • Mark: •••••

The Expendables 3. Sly rounds up his old-time action heroes for another romp, but in all the bombs, bullets and bazookas, something is missing — a plot Richard: Mark, more people die in the first five minutes of this movie than in any other two war movies combined. There is death by bullet, bazooka and bomb. It’s a wild but oddly bloodless beginning to the movie. Perhaps it’s because they have scaled back the rating to PG13 from the hard
Rs the last two Expendables enjoyed, but removing most of the over-the-top violence leaves an absence of the over-the-top fun of the originals. Why arm Stallone and Company up the wazoo and then skimp on the fake blood and faux carnage? Mark: I kind of liked the first two but this instalment felt ... expendable. All the young guns recruited are interchangeable and even the old guys are pretty boring. Schwarzenegger exuded more danger as a governor of a state with 18 per cent inflation, Dolph Lundgren looks like a Dutch drag act and only Mel Gibson registers as a crazed billionaire bad guy, a role
he’s been rehearsing for years. RC: How could you not love Wesley Snipes saying that his character was put in jail for tax evasion? It’s art imitating life! Or something. I thought that most of the performances weren’t so much performances as they were action-star posturing. Kelsey Grammer, as a recruiter for the new batch of Expendables, stands out because he does some actual acting. So do many of the obvious stunt doubles. The rest are bulked-up chunks of machismo floating in a sea of testosterone. MB: Wesley Snipes and his

tax joke did make me smile but then he disappears from the story until the end. There are just too many characters to follow: Even the poster is in widescreen. The movie felt like an abattoir populated by frisky sides of beef. RC: Still, as an old-school action movie, it works well enough, despite the lack of gallons of fake plasma. I liked the attempts of creating new catchphrases — which are a must in these kinds of films — like Crews yelling, “It’s time to mow the lawn,” before spraying thousands of bullets into a dock packed with baddies. Also, the action scenes are shot clearly and effectively,

Moretz seeks and channels strength in all her characters If I Stay. Star of Carrie and Kick Ass tackles a role that prompts big questions about life, death and happiness richard crouse
scene@metronews.ca
Seventeen-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz has played a young vampire in Let Me In, a would-be superhero in Kick Ass and cinema’s most famous telekinetic, Carrie. It’s a diverse group of roles, but Moretz says she can draw a straight line from character to character. “They’re linear,” she says, “in the sense that they’re all strong characters. A lot of them are like me, the basis of them. They all have a big mountain in
front of them but they are going to climb it and fight as hard as they can. The weakest character, but also the strongest character, I’ve played is Carrie. She is two different characters in one, so diverse and so dark. There is so much to learn from her.” In her new film If I Stay, she plays Mia, a gifted teenage cellist from a family of musicians. When a catastrophic accident throws her into a coma, she has an outof-body experience. The rest of the story is told from the perspective of her memories before the accident and in the present, as she observes, ghostlike, the aftermath of the car crash. The character appealed to her because she saw some of herself in Mia. “She’s an introvert until she plays the cello and the cello brings her alive. It’s how I am. I’m pretty shy, unless I’m speaking

about my job. I’m really shy around teenagers my age. Sometimes it’s because they judge me and it kind of scares me. Crowds scare me, teenagers scare me, new people. I get really quiet and awkward.” With that insight, she hoped to make Mia true to the character created by author Gayle Forman in the bestselling book that inspired the movie.

“My biggest thing was making her honest to the book,” she says. “I have been a fan of book series, and then I’ll see the movie and think, ‘That was such a let-down.’ I hate that feeling because for me, I want to be able to be a fan of my own work.” The movie is a tear jerker, but Moretz says she doesn’t like it “when people chalk up a movie to being all about crying. I like to walk out of a movie feeling like I have learned something, that something’s changed.” After seeing If I Stay, she hopes audiences “leave feeling they felt something. It is a really beautiful movie about life and death and happiness and sadness and music. “It is a beautiful story — a moment in time that doesn’t really have any boundaries.”

There are things about Daniel Radcliffe that you probably already know. Thanks to the Harry Potter series he’s one of the most recognizable actors on earth. He is 5’5” tall, a published poet and is the youngest person, other than royalty, to be honoured with a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery. Here’s what you don’t know. He’s also remarkably reliable. In 10 years of shooting the Potter pictures, he only missed two days — and he’s polite. For this interview he turned up early (when was the last time an international superstar was on time?) and greets your reporter with a hearty, “What a lovely surprise.”
He offers to help with my crossword — “I’m one of those people in life who probably really annoys serious crossword doers. I’m one of those people who comes up behind and goes, ‘That one you’re about to get? I’ve got it’” — and apologizes when he almost lets a curse slip. He is not your typical superstar and his new romance, The F Word, is not a typical rom-com. The 25-year-old actor says the story of a young man hopelessly in love with his best friend (Zoe Kazan) “has things a lot of films want, that combination of being sarcastic and quick and funny without being negative or cynical.” “Zoe says a great thing,” he says of co-star Kazan. “She talks about how in most romantic comedies the people meet and then there’s a getting-to-knowyou montage, then they do whatever they’re going to do for the rest of the film. Our movie is basically that montage expanded to feature length, and that is what is so joyous about it. Those moments when you are getting to know someone and flirting with them, making them laugh, are so

intimate and so exciting and so charged that as an audience it is wonderful to be allowed in to watch that and live through it again.” Playing the lovesick romantic lead is something different for Radcliffe, who says he wants “to try my hand at as many things as possible.” Since the final Potter film in 2011, he has appeared in everything from the beatnik drama Kill Your Darlings to the fantasy film Horns and will soon be seen as Igor in a new version of Frankenstein. “Having played one character for a very long time,” he says, “that builds up in you a desire to play a number of different characters and do as much different work as you can. I want to show as many different sides of my ability as I can. Also I like that you can’t predict what my next thing is going to be.” Unpredictable, yes, but still polite.

Duran Duran hit stage, studio and screen DD Unstaged. Film by David Lynch enhances footage from the band’s livestream performance in 2011 Nick Rhodes is on the phone to talk about Duran Duran’s concert film collaboration with director David Lynch that’s slated for a one-nightonly theatrical engagement next month. As he talks of being inspired by Lynch’s The Elephant Man as a teenager, he can hear another one of his inspirations nearby: Nile Rodgers on guitar. “I can actually hear him playing the guitar just down the corridor from where I am right now,” Rhodes says gleefully. Next month will mark a period of high activity for Duran Duran. Along with work to finish a new album, the British rock band will appear at the Fashion Rocks concert at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Sept. 9 before releasing Duran Duran: Unstaged in more than 300 North American theatres on Sept. 10. The film is an enhanced version of Lynch’s original livestream presentation, with tweaks and enhancements to improve on the 2011 original. The American Express Unstaged series pairs musicians with directors who design a one-off live show that even a band as seasoned as Duran Duran was nervous about. “It literally was live live,” Rhodes said. “It was one of those moments where we all looked at each other and said, ‘Good luck, let’s see what happens.’ “It went out on the Inter-

It’s been refined for cinema, and it looks beautiful, too. The print is fantastic.” When the group approached Lynch to oversee the initial livestream, he said he’d only consider it if it was “radically different” than the staid

Lynch chose to shoot the piece in black and white — like The Elephant Man, which Rhodes and John Taylor saw together in a Birmingham, England, theatre as teenagers — and created a series of images to run over the top of the band’s performance. “There was a room filled with smoke all the time,” Rhodes said. “There was another room where there were a lot of actors doing strange things.

Paltrow ‘totally at ease’ during Utah escape with Glee co-creator So Gwyneth Paltrow was serious about all that conscious uncoupling stuff after all. She’s reportedly dating Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, according to Star magazine. The two spent some quality time together at a resort in Utah in late July. Because nothing says romance like Utah. In late July. “I saw Gwyneth and Brad one after-
noon sitting in the dining room,” a fellow vacationer tells the tabloid. “She had her hair down and wasn’t wearing any makeup. They were chatting and smiling and looked totally at ease.” I’m sure there’s a new Goop post coming about how an $8,000-a-night private villa at a resort in Utah is a great place for a little “me time.”
Birthday, books, bathing at a Bora Bora bungalow: Dr. Seuss would be proud When Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux want to just get away for a bit, they apparently get very far away. The couple reportedly spent last week taking a quick jaunt to Bora Bora in honour of Theroux’s 43rd birthday,
according to E! News. Not too shabby. Aniston and Theroux stayed in a private swimup bungalow at the Four Seasons, where they pretty much just sunbathed and caught up on reading. As you do. In Bora Bora.

Tornado Miley hits NY hotel, tells manager to thank her Ned Ehrbar
Metro in Hollywood
Miley Cyrus and company are the last thing you want staying at your hotel, the folks at NYC’s fancyschmancy Greenwich Hotel learned recently when her entourage checked in. “It was like a tornado hit the lobby. Miley and her posse took over, screaming
and carrying on so much that management received a number of complaints,” a source tells Life & Style. “Someone in the group was smoking pot, and they were swearing loudly and throwing themselves all over the expensive furniture.” I hear another guest, possibly a Vanderbilt, was treated for a sprained wrist after too much pearlclutching. Hotel management tried to give Miley a talking to, but she was having none of it, responding that “she’s spent so much money there that they should be glad to have her,” the source says. Well, she just sounds like a peach.
The Croatian author who claims Angelina Jolie ripped him off for her film In the Land of Blood and Honey may have lost his last court battle against her, but he isn’t giving up that easily. James Braddock sued Jolie in 2011, accusing her of using his book, The Soul Shattering, as the basis for her film, but a judge ruled
in her favour. Now Braddock is filing an appeal in federal court, according to Radar Online. “The court’s decision noted a number of material errors, starting with clear descriptions that are interpreted or translated incorrectly,” his appeal reads. “The tests that were performed were not executed in the right way.”
Usher’s not quite as smart as he thought he was at 28 For Usher, the biggest mistake of his life was “getting married at 28.” That may sound severe, but he still insists he has no regrets. “Most people probably think I regret it because I ended up getting divorced,” Usher, who went through a lengthy legal battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster, tells Oprah Winfrey’s O magazine. “But it helped me learn that, sometimes, I think I know more than I actually do.”

Dining outdoors is hands down one of the best things about summer. Few things are more enjoyable than lazily lingering in the shade of a tree with great food and even better company. The cherry on top? A decadent dessert, of course. These Pecan Pie Squares are sure to satisfy a sweet tooth — including mine!
1.
With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 350 F (180 C). Line an 8-inch (20 cm) square pan with parchment paper, letting it hang over
onto the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake for about 20 minutes or until the edges are lightly browned.
3.
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, bring the syrup, cream and pecans to a boil with the remaining butter and sugar and stir. Simmer for 2 minutes. Pour over the warm crust in the pan and bake for 20 minutes. Let cool.
4. Run a thin blade around
the edge of the pie and let cool completely. Remove from the pan and cut into 36 squares. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or freeze. My brief mention of Chianti last week inspired a flood of questions asking for more details. Chianti is an area in Tuscany between the cities of Sienna and Florence. Famous for rolling hills and statuesque cypress trees, it was one of the first Italian regions to export to Canada. That made its juice a household name. The fact its original bottles (called a fiasco) came wrapped in a straw basket made them the toast of the 1970s when all the groovy people, and their grandmothers, started drinking the stuff. It pumps out more red than white, and is home to the sangiovese grape. While the Classico sub-zone is where the oldest (and arguably best) vines grow, it’s one of eight areas that can slap Chianti on its labels. The Rúfina sub-zone is an undiscovered gem and Frescobaldi’s 2009 Nipozzano Chianti Riserva ($19.99 - $26.98) serves up the savoury finesse and lingering layers of cherry fruit that typify Rúfina wines. Cellarworthy, it hits a home run with lasagna and pizza. PRICES REFLECT THE RANGE ACROSS THE COUNTRY. SOME PRODUCTS MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE IN ALL PROVINCES.

Lussier steps up to help prospects showcase skills Intrasquad game
Prospects Vokey and Gaudet find back of net
KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE

Being a veteran blue-liner means stepping up — on and off the ice. For second-year Herd defenceman Jesse Lussier, that meant playing forward for Thursday’s intrasquad game, so that Halifax Mooseheads staff could get a closer look at up-and-coming prospects at training camp. “It’s been awhile since I’ve played forward, but it’s kind of fun,” Lussier, originally drafted in 2010 by the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs, said Thursday after helping Green to a 4-1 win over Red at Cole Harbour Place. “It kind of makes you enjoy yourself a little bit,” he said, adding with a chuckle that he tried “not to do anything stupid out there.” Lussier, 20, is one of four returning defencemen at camp, with Jacob Jacques and 2013 Memorial Cup champions Austyn Hardie and Matt Murphy also back this season. “It really makes you feel old when you see the young kids coming,” said the sixfoot-two, 197-pound Ottawa native, who moved several times with his military family and bounced around a bit in junior before joining the Mooseheads.
Jesse Lussier, 20, is one of four returning Mooseheads at training camp this week in Cole Harbour. JEFF HARPER/METRO Quoted
“Our goal is to make sure we’re better tomorrow than we were today.” Mooseheads assistant coach Jim Midgley on training camp “There are a lot of good prospects, a lot of good skating defencemen (with) good puck movements,” Lussier said of this year’s newcomers. That includes 2013 QMJHL draft picks Taylor Ford and Jean-Sebastien Taillefer, 2014 selections Domenico Argento and Morgan Nauss of Halifax,
along with Cavan Fitzgerald and Brandon Worthen of Dartmouth, who were both brought up for games last season. “The biggest and best advice?” Lussier said. “It’s just play your game, don’t try and do too much, keep it simple and have fun out there.”
Mooseheads assistant coach Jim Midgley agrees it’s important for experienced players to give younger prospects a chance to showcase their skills. Hardie and Murphy haven’t played an intrasquad game yet, because “we know what those two guys can do,” he said Thursday. There are three or four spots open on the blue line this season. “We’re looking for guys who can compete and play our system,” Midgley said.
Two rookies and two veterans scored for Green en route to a 4-1 win over Red in Halifax Mooseheads intrasquad action Thursday, in front of a sizable Cole Harbour Place crowd. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard until about 14 minutes into the first, when forward Mark Vokey notched Green’s first marker. Fellow prospect Jake Gaudet, invited to camp as a free agent, slid it past Red netminder Jacob Dempsey a few minutes later to make it 2-0, while second-year forward Danny Moynihan fired a wrister to give Green a 3-0 lead after the opening frame. The red squad tried to come back in the second, but couldn’t solve Green netminder Jean-Phillipe Brais. Veteran forward Brandon Vuic scored his second goal of camp midway through the third, shooting through traffic to make it 4-0. Swiss import Timo Meier was able to pop one in for Red off a Tristan Tardiff shot to break the shutout bid. KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE/METRO
Six bouts added to UFC Fight Night in Halifax The lineup for the first-ever UFC card in Halifax appears set and it has a distinctive Canadian feel to it. Six more bouts were announced Thursday, to go along with four previous ones, for the Oct. 4 card at the Metro Centre. Ticket prices were also announced, and are $183, $133, $93, $58 and $48, which include taxes and service charges. There is a limit of eight tickets per person. The newly announced fights each have a Canadian
taking to the Octagon, highlighted by The Ultimate Fighter Nations winners Elias Theodorou and Chad Laprise, both who will be making their UFC debuts in Halifax. Theodorou, who fights out of Toronto and has a 9-0 MMA record, will meet Brazil’s Bruno Santos (14-1) in a middleweight clash. Laprise, who fights out of Montreal and is also 9-0, takes on Miami’s Yosdenis Cedeno (10-3) in a lightweight bout The other bouts see On-

“I’ll probably be the usual blend-in-thebackground type of guy ... not much change.” after games and practices, although he made improvements in that area toward the end of last season. Privately, the Leafs have been trying to get Kessel to be more compliant and patient with the media, even when the questions are uncomfortable. But the high-scoring forward has mostly remained evasive and reluctant to speak out on the team’s performance, preferring to leave the talking to players such as Dion Phaneuf, James Reimer, Cody Franson, Nazem Kadri, David Clarkson and Joffrey Lupul. Kessel clearly doesn’t want to be the public face of the Leafs. Lupul remains the most authoritative and insightful observer on the Leafs and how they play. But the fans would

HOF induction ‘not why I played the game’: Clemens Roger Clemens took advantage of his induction into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame to throw batting practice to two of his sons on the field at Fenway Park. Then, it was off to Chicago to see another son play in a high school All-America game at Wrigley Field. But at no point in his busy schedule, the seven-time Cy Young winner said, does he spend any time worrying about whether he will even-
tually gain election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. “If it happens, it happens. It’s not going to change me as a person,” Clemens said at Fenway on Thursday morning. “It’s not why I played the game. When I was out there and I was doing it, I did it to the best of my ability, and I worked my tail off.” Clemens was inducted into the Red Sox hall during

Luis Suarez’s 4-month playing ban, for biting incident, upheld The Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Luis Suarez’s four-month ban for biting an opponent at the World Cup, but cleared him Thursday to train with Barcelona. CAS said FIFA’s sanctions against Suarez are “generally proportionate to the offence committed.” Suarez can next play for Barcelona on Oct. 26, which could be the day the team faces Real Madrid in the Spanish league. He remains banned for Uruguay’s next eight competitive matches and will miss next year’s Copa América and some World Cup qualifying matches. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Phil Kessel you saw last season is likely going to be the Phil Kessel you see this season, like it or not. And some will like it, some will not. The Maple Leafs’ sniper said Thursday he hasn’t made any off-season training or equipment changes and has no plans to alter his off-ice persona either. This is good news for the Leafs and their fans, who saw Kessel score 37 goals (fifth in the league) and add 43 assists to rank sixth in the NHL in scoring last season with 80 points. But it’s not good news for the media, who are starved for more insight and comment from the team’s biggest star. The notoriously aloof Kessel said he is not interested in opening up more to the media

They were recognized on the field during a 20-minute ceremony that included highlights and prerecorded speeches played on the centre-field scoreboard before Thursday night’s game against the Houston Astros. Clemens received polite applause from the crowd, while Garciaparra and Martinez were given rousing ovations. The four received plaques and stood at the edge
of the mound before throwing out ceremonial first pitches. Clemens’ reputation across baseball suffered when he was featured in the Mitchell Report on performance-enhancing drug use in baseball. Although he has been eligible for the past two Cooperstown elections, Clemens has received about one-third of the votes (with three-fourths needed for election). The Associated PRess
Race car death fallout. Tony Stewart to sit out next Sprint Cup race Tony Stewart says he will not race Sunday at Michigan International Speedway, skipping a second straight NASCAR Sprint Cup race since striking and killing a driver in a dirttrack race at a small New York track. Stewart announced the decision Thursday. His plans for the rest of the season have not been determined. Jeff Burton will drive Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet in
Michigan. Stewart also sat out Sunday at Watkins Glen, a day after he struck and killed Kevin Ward Jr. during a sprint car event in Canandaigua, N.Y. After Stewart clipped Ward’s car, sending it spinning, Ward got out of the car during the caution period, walked down the track and was hit by Stewart. Ward’s funeral was Thursday in Boonville, N.Y. Elite teams given a helping broom Curling. 12 rinks qualify for CCA’s National Team Program, which comes with funding for competitions, training The Canadian Curling Association has unveiled the 12 rinks that will be part of the organization’s National Team Program for the 2014-15 season. The six men’s teams are skipped by Olympic champion Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., Mike McEwen of Winnipeg, John Morris of Calgary, Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., Kevin Koe of Calgary and Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont. The six women’s teams are skipped by Olympic champion Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon, Val Sweeting of Edmonton, Sherry Middaugh of Coldwater, Ont., and Heather Nedohin of Sherwood Park, Alta. The teams qualified for the National Team Program (NTP) based on their standings on the Order of Merit following last season. “The depth of curling talent in our country is amazing, and the international results continue to prove that,” CCA chief executive officer Greg Stremlaw said Thursday in a release. “We were the only country in the world to have no team finish outside of the top six in traditional fourplayer world and Olympic championship events last season, and the National Team
‘Milos problem.’ Heavy serve narrowly carries Raonic past qualifier Milos Raonic says he came to the court with a poor attitude, and it almost cost him. Fortunately for the fifth-seeded Canadian, his booming serve rescued him from a big upset. Raonic saved a win with his 30th ace in a tense 6-7 (7), 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over American qualifier Steve Johnson on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open tennis tournament. While his serve was potent, Raonic said his poor play made the contest “complicated.” Raonic had to win it all in a tiebreaker after striking three double-faults as he served for victory leading 5-4 in the final set. In the end, the 23-year-old won the last four points of the tiebreaker, capping the victory with another ace. “My attitude was not great when I was first serving for the match,” said Raonic. “It added up and made life a lot tougher, it put a lot of weight on my shoulders. I was playing too negatively. “Johnson was getting ahead a few times, but not by

Horoscopes by Sally Brompton
Aries
March 21 - April 20 It will pay you to take a closer look at how you organize your everyday affairs. You may not be able to escape responsibilities but there are ways you can make them easier to handle.
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 The pace of life will pick up today and over the weekend and if you are involved in anything of a creative nature it will go extremely well for you.
Gemini
May 22 - June 21 You may not agree with what a loved one tells you about they’ve been up to but resist the urge to say that it’s wrong.
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 You’ll have to make a conscious effort over the next 24 hours not to let fears get the better of you. Whatever it is you are worried about, it is almost certainly an illusion.
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 More than any other sign you have the power to make things happen, not least by using your ability to influence how people think. Your task today is to be a catalyst for change.
Sagittarius
Cancer
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Mercury’s move into the career area of your chart makes this the ideal time to think about your ambitions. Is what you are doing now what you want to be doing long-term?
Leo
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You will feel brighter and happier than you have for a long time today. You will also be inclined to start thinking about where your next vacation should be. Make it exotic.
June 22 - July 23 You can’t seem to make up your mind which direction you should be moving, which is of course frustrating, but who says you have to make a decision? Sit tight and wait for a sign.
July 24 - Aug. 23 As mind planet Mercury moves into the money area of your chart today, you will come up with some ideas as to how to boost your spending power.
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 Mercury, your ruler, moves into your birth sign today, making it much easier to work out what it is you want out of life. Once you’ve decided, make your plans and act at the earliest opportunity. Don’t hesitate.
