A big smile comes to Jennica Gagne’s face when she remembers the first time she was able to make a phone call. “Magic,” the 21-year-old Cole Harbour woman recalls, blushing a rosy shade that matches her hot-pink hair. “It was so cool.” Jennica, who was born with cerebral palsy and uses a power wheelchair to move around, wasn’t able to make a phone call by herself until last year, when she was fitted with a new chair that allowed her to use an iPhone through a set of head controls. “She was able to call me by herself and then I cried happy tears when she hung up on me by herself,” her

As for Jennica: “I have no idea what I’m walking into,” she said, laughing. But luckily, she says any nerves are overshadowed by the excitement she feels at the opportunity of gaining more independence. “It means that I do what a normal person can do.”

The pair are now hoping to recreate that magic on Saturday when Jennica has the chance to be in the pilot’s seat of a drone that will be flying over MacDonald Beach near Cole Harbour. “We can’t put her in the driver’s seat, but we can put her in the passenger’s,” flight organizer Marc Cayoutte said Thursday. New MacDonald to feel more like MacKay, says bridge boss The Big Lift revamp. Officials describe the transformation plan HALEY RYAN
haley.ryan@metronews.ca
After roughly one million work hours and $150 million, drivers on Macdonald Bridge should have a clear harbour view from the newly paved deck. On Thursday, Halifax Harbour Bridges general manager Steve Snider and contractor Mike Cegelis of American Bridge Canada outlined budget and workload details. The first sign of “The Big Lift” should be crews stiffening the trusses with new steel next March so it can handle the weight of construction. Those trusses will be moved underneath the deck when new pieces go in during the summer of 2016, Cegelis said. “What they’re going to notice is a better view. It won’t be so you get that feeling of compression when you’re driving.... It’ll be open on the sides,” Cegelis said, adding there will still be a rail between traffic and the

bike path. “It’s like driving across the MacKay Bridge,” Snider said. The walkways and bike lanes will be removed next June. Snider said shuttles pulling bike trailers will take people across the bridge 24/7 until fall 2016. About 46 old deck pieces will be lowered onto a barge and new ones lifted into place during bridge closures over four weekends and overnights, starting next August. After the re-decking is done in 2016, Cegelis said they’ll shut down the bridge overnight once more to repave. Then they can put in new suspender ropes, raise the whole bridge and dehumidify the cables to extend their life, with everything done by September 2017.
The Macdonald Bridge transformation is set to be complete by September 2017. METRO FILE

Premier: Gov’t not ‘going to war with organized labour’ Public sector costs. Health minister wants to reduce number of health authorities from 10 to 2
No love for throne speech
Bargaining changes undemocratic: Opposition
Nova Scotia’s government is laying the ground for another showdown with its public sector unions after promising to slow down hiring, consider relying on the private sector to deliver some services and streamline collective bargaining with health-care workers. The Liberal government took aim at public sector labour costs in its throne speech Thursday, warning that the salaries of civil service workers could not be sustained given Nova Scotia’s financial pressures. Premier Stephen McNeil, who came to power nearly a year ago, said wage increases have exceeded the province’s ability to pay in recent years and are adding to the mounting debt. “This is not at all going to war with organized labour,” McNeil said after the throne More speech highlights

speech. “There has to be an ability to pay for the services we have as a province and everyone is going to have to play a part in that.” One of the measures the government is promising involves reducing the number of health authorities from 10 to two. Legislation will be intro-
duced Monday to merge those health boards and determine how health-care workers will be represented in contract negotiations, Health Minister Leo Glavine said. Glavine said the government decided to impose a framework that will identify which unions will represent nurses, technolo-
gists, administrative and support workers after negotiations with the unions broke down over the summer. “Amongst those four unions in acute care there are currently 50 bargaining contracts that go on and we want to dramatically reduce that,” Glavine said. He said the bill would also
provide for a mediator to iron out existing contractual differences across the various bargaining units. “It won’t come about through an easy process, but I think the benefits to Nova Scotia and to the workers will definitely be seen,” he said. Glavine wouldn’t give an
Acting NDP Leader Maureen MacDonald said the government’s latest move to change the collective bargaining process was undemocratic and would further erode the health system by affecting the morale of its workers. “In a democracy you let people make their own choices about who speaks for them,” said MacDonald. Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie said while it was preferable to let workers decide how they are represented, he is awaiting more details about the bill and how it will benefit the health system. “We’re interested in the results,” Baillie said. “Will there be savings for taxpayers? Will services get better for Nova Scotia patients?” The canadian Press

N.S. Supreme Court. Halifax beating death case adjourned for two weeks The case of a man accused in a fatal beating outside a Halifax bar has been adjourned for two weeks. Andre Noel Denny, who is charged with second-degree murder, was briefly in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court where his case was set over until Oct. 9 to give him more time to find a new lawyer. A Nova Scotia judge has set trial dates for two people charged with murder in the death of Loretta Saunders, but the cases could be tried separately if a motion to sever them is granted. Judge John Murphy set aside four weeks for the jury trial starting April 20 in Nova Scotia Supreme Court for Blake Leggette, 26, and Victoria Henneberry, 28, who are both charged with first-degree murder. Leggette’s lawyer, Terry Sheppard, said he was pleased the case could go ahead in the spring, adding that his client will have been incarcerated for more than a year by the time a trial starts. “We were easily anticipating going into the fall of next

One of the cases could be delayed if the judge accepts a motion by Pat Atherton, Henneberry’s lawyer, to have the two accused tried separately. If successful, at least one trial will go ahead on April 20. That request, along with other motions dealing with the
admissibility of evidence, will be dealt with in court before the trial starts. A date was not set for that hearing. Hopscotch festival getting bigger Urban music. Popular event includes international stars, local talents Stephanie Taylor stephanie.taylor@metronews.ca
Even with international hiphop stars set to headline this weekend’s Hopscotch Urban Arts Festival, organizer and chair Michael McGuire says he’s most excited to see Halifax’s local talent take the stage. “We’ve got an incredibly rich hip-hop community ... it’s
not something a lot of people realize,” he said during a phone interview Thursday. The fifth annual festival that kicks off Friday and runs until Sunday, will feature more than 100 outdoor performances by local dancers and DJs along the Halifax and Dartmouth waterfronts. Joining the ranks of Halifax’s hip-hop community will be two New York-based DJs performing Saturday night and rapper heavyweights Lil Jon and Tech N9ne, playing at the Cunard Centre Sunday. “There’s something for everybody and it’s really top level stuff,” McGuire said. He said the festival —

which originally began as an idea for a breakdancing competition — has evolved to become a real showcase of hiphop culture, from beat-boxing
to graffiti painting. “It wouldn’t be really fair to have a rap music festival and not include the painters, not include the dancers,” he said.
“Every year we’ve kind of stepped it up. This year is a perfect example,” McGuire added, saying the festival will host a drive-in concert Friday night — the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada. But no matter the lineup, he believes what makes the festival unique remains its focus on youth. Although Halifax is home to a variety of all-ages events and festivities throughout the year, McGuire said Hopscotch is the only one that truly celebrates the urban youth lifestyle. “Hip-hop culture is youth culture,” he said. “We just want to be able to do something young people can enjoy.”
Two prize-winning lottery tickets were sold a week apart in New Minas — and it turns out the winners are co-workers. Christ Parker and Ernest Lightfoot work together and each won an Atlantic 49 prize of $25,649 in August. Lightfoot has known about his win for a few weeks now, but Parker only found out after publicity about a missing winner in the area from the Aug. 6 draw. The Kentville man plays regularly, but often holds on to his tickets for some time before he gets around to checking them. After hearing about the missing winner last week, he decided to check his tickets. On the first ticket, he won $5, then nothing, nothing, nothing. Finally, on the last ticket, the scanner read, “major winner.” Parker plans to share his winnings with his wife and two daughters and hopes to take a trip south in the future. The winning ticket was sold at Milne Court Petro Canada in New Minas, which will receive a one per cent seller’s prize. Lightfoot, who won the same amount on Aug. 13, bought his ticket at V.W. Charges have been laid against a 28-year-old man after a person died when he was found bleeding from the head on a Nova Scotia
roadway earlier this month. RCMP in Enfield were tipped off about a man lying on Highway 215 in South Maitland around 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 13. They believe he had been a passenger in a vehicle before the suspicious incident took place. The victim, 48-year-old Arnold Frederick Hubley, was airlifted to the QEII hospital in Halifax in critic-

Al LeBlanc said of the case. “This investigation took a little bit more time than usual to determine the sequence of events.” LeBlanc wouldn’t give specifics as to the sequence of those events, saying that any information would
have to come out in court. He did say the person charged was driving the car and two other people were inside, including the victim. On Thursday, police announced that 28-year-old John Chester Lawrence of Maitland was charged with criminal negligence causing death. India releases first image of Mars taken by satellite India’s space agency released the first image of the craterscarred and dry surface of Mars taken by the nation’s first interplanetary spacecraft after it began orbiting the red planet. The image released Thursday was taken when the Martian Orbiter Mission, or MOM, was about 7,300 kilometres from the planet’s surface, according to the Indian Space and Research Organisation. The digital data took at least 12 minutes to reach Earth. Space agency scientists released the image after bringing it to New Delhi to show Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had spent Wednesday morning witnessing the satellite’s last manoeuvre into orbit from the space agency’s Mars command centre in the southern city of Bangalore. The satellite will spend the next six months on an elliptical orbit — coming as close as 365 kilometres and swinging out to 80,000 kilometres at its farthest — as it collects scientific data on the Martian atmosphere.

Officers saw missing girl the day before she disappeared Tina Fontaine. Winnipeg police are looking into why the 15-year-old was not taken into custody Winnipeg police confirmed Thursday that two officers came across Tina Fontaine the day before she disappeared and one week before her body was pulled from the Red River. Fontaine, 15, was in a vehicle police pulled over on Aug. 8, more than a week after she was reported missing, but she was not taken into custody. Police set up a news conference to respond to a report from CTV that said Fontaine was a passenger in a vehicle along with a man who was arrested on suspicion of being impaired. “The two officers have been reassigned to nonoperational duties,” police Chief Devon Clunis said. A group of high school students got a real-life lesson in wild animal behaviour Thursday when they witnessed part of a fatal fight between two tigers at a Winnipeg zoo. Officials with the Assiniboine Park Zoo said an older Siberian male tiger pushed open a mistakenly unlocked gate and stepped into a neighbouring den housing two younger male cats. then attacked the older one and, although the fight took place at the rear of the enclosure, it happened in view of any visitors who happened to be at the tiger exhibit. Margaret Redmond, president of the Assiniboine Zoo Conservancy, told reporters that the students were on a class trip with a teacher. No visitors were in any
danger at any time, she said, and a review of the incident is underway. The zoo’s chief veterinarian, Dr. Chris Enright, said the 19-year-old tiger who died was named Baikal and had been at the zoo for about five years. The neighbouring den houses a pair of younger tigers, two-year-old brothers named Samkha and Vasili. Vasili, the one who killed Baikal, was likely defending his turf, said Enright. “Any tiger — they’re a 350-pound predator — has the potential to act aggressively in defence of itself,” he said. U.S. man sentenced to six years of hard labour says he mostly does agricultural work An American man recently sentenced by North Korea to six years of hard labour says he is digging in fields eight hours a day and kept in isolation, but so far he is still in good health. Under close guard and with only enough time to answer one question, 24-year-old Matthew Miller spoke briefly to The Associated Press at a Pyongyang hotel where he had been brought to call his family. since he was convicted Sept. 14 of entering the country illegally to commit espionage. “Prison life is eight hours of work per day. Mostly it’s been agriculture, like in the dirt, digging around,” Miller said when asked what conditions were
like in prison. At Miller’s 90-minute trial, North Korea’s Supreme Court said Miller tore up his tourist visa upon arriving in Pyongyang on April 10 and declared his ambition to experience prison life so he could secretly investigate North Korea’s human rights situation. Miller is one of three Americans detained in North Korea. Jeffrey Fowle, arrested in May for leaving a Bible at a sailor’s club, faces a future court date. Kenneth Bae was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour in 2013. Robert King, the U.S. special envoy for North Korean human rights issues, said Pyongyang has not accepted American offers to send a high-level envoy to seek release of the three men. The business of running The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon takes over the majority of the downtown as 25,000 runners take part in October 2013. Rick Madonik/Torstar news Service
Who will win the race? After a slow start, the running event biz has hit its stride — but now it’s do-or-die time for organizers scrapping it out Melissa Dunne
melissa.dunne@metronews.ca
A sea of hipsters wait in T-shirts, headbands and sunglasses. Soon, their bright white shirts will look like the inside of a Skittles bag. They look pleased. After all, most paid about $60 a pop to be popped with brightly coloured powder during a five-kilometre run earlier this month in downtown Vancouver. Across town, another sea of runners in rainbow-bright clothes and shoes are readying for a timed 10-km road race. It’s clearly do-or-die time for running event organizers scrapping it out in the booming running events business. It wasn’t always this way. Back in 1963 at Calgary’s first marathon, a mere 19 men showed up, and only 12 finished. This year, more than 15,000 people took part. In 1975, 144 men and two women ran Ottawa’s marathon. This May, 4,436 men and 2,599 women ran the marathon. And overall, 47,827 people participated in six events during Ottawa Race Weekend. It’s the same story coast-tocoast. While it took years for traditional road races to slowly build up their events, new events seem to have quickly sprinted to the head of the pack. The Color Run, LLC held its first event in Arizona in 2012.
Charity
• Some for-profit runs, like the Canada Running Series, have a separate nonprofit foundation. Others donate a small amount of money to charity directly. • But the majority of money for charity via runs (whether a nonprofit or not) is raised by individual runners.
In 2013, the for-profit company hosted roughly 170 events in more than 30 countries. The Color Run (which has not added a “u” in deference to our spelling) held five events in Canada in 2013. This year, it grew to eight events, and plans to expand again next year. About 60 per cent of participants in the untimed “fun runs” are first-time runners, according to a Color Run spokesperson. The for-profit Tough Mudder LLC tends to attract more seasoned runners. Since it started in 2010, more than 100 Tough Mudders have been held around the globe. The 18- to 20-km events include obstacles such as: mud, freezing-cold ice, electricity and fire. A crosssection of CrossFitters, gym rats and runners in Canada have plunked down about $139.99 to $199.99 (plus fees and taxes) to take part in the gruelling event. In 2012, the business co-founded by a Harvard Business School grad brought in $70 million US in revenue, according to New York Magazine. Alan Brookes, the director of the Canada Running Series Inc., is not worried about all the new competition. “We’re passionate believers in doing one thing well,” says Brookes from Vancouver, where
he was hosting the Vancouver Eastside 10K. “We are sticking to the traditional, complete road race and leaving the mud and colour to others.” The for-profit Canada Running Series holds a total of eight races in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver every year. Its marquee event, the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon (STWM), has hit its stride — celebrating 25 years this year and on pace to hit record numbers of participants. The STWM began as the Coors Light Toronto Half-Marathon — part of a “six-pack” of races in a nod to the sponsor. In 1990, about 1,500 people took part. In the last five years the number of participants at the STWM (which now includes a 5-km run, half-marathon and full marathon) has risen almost 400 per cent, with about 25,000 expected on Oct. 19. Lately, it’s condo-dwelling millennials of both genders that are pushing the phenomenal growth, Brookes says. And companies are jockeying for a prominent spot at these events so they can market their product or brand to the swelling crowds of young, fit and well-heeled runners. Brands have such a strong presence that some runs look like NASCAR races. Being a part of these feelgood events is worth a lot to companies. In 2008, Richard Branson’s group paid about $30 million in a five-year deal to sponsor London’s not-for-profit marathon. It’s now called the Virgin Money London Marathon. Eye-popping deals like that seem to have encouraged a slew of newbies to give putting on an event a shot. Many quickly hit a wall. Earlier this month, Runner’s World Magazine reported some
theme and obstacle events have failed lately, with insiders pointing to “organizer’s inexperience and unanticipated costs.” Heather Wall has experienced what she says was a poorly executed event firsthand. The über-fit Ottawa mom runs in about a dozen events per year, including the Canada Army Run in Ottawa last weekend. Two years ago she tried a local obstacle endurance event. “It was not well organized,” says Wall. “It left a bad taste in my mouth.” Among other things, she says it was not clear the event was solely a for-profit venture and she worried about the safety of runners as she believes there was not sufficient medical help on site. “I’m glad I did it, but I would never do it again,” says Wall. A safe event is something runners like Wall keep top-ofmind. In 2012, a man drowned at a Tough Mudder in West Virginia. The death was ruled accidental. The man’s family have since filed a lawsuit. In the mad dash to cash in, some of these events will trip up and drop out along the way. In the long run, runners like Wall will determine which events get a second wind.
The Running Room
Free clinics mean big money Every Sunday morning the true believers gather to worship in the running temples John Stanton built. The former two-packa-day smoker started the Running Room in 1984. The first store was literally a room in a house in Edmonton. Thirty years later, there are about 1,500 staffers and 128 stores in North America. Since the start, Stanton has preached about inclusiveness and community. The stores generally run free clinics every Wednesday night and Sunday morning that anyone can attend. Plus, the stores offer
several training clinics for $69.99 in Canada, which are sponsored by running shoe companies, such as New Balance and Saucony. “The clinics are a little bit self-serving,” Stanton freely admits in a phone interview from Edmonton. It’s a mutually beneficial relationship, he says. Customers get fit and meet like-minded people and the store builds a strong relationship with customers and sells them a new pair of running shoes every now and then. Competitors are starting to see the light. Vancouver’s Lululemon Athletica Inc. and MEC (formerly Mountain Equipment Coop) are among the growing number of retailers now offering free running groups and sponsoring running events, too.

New report. Forcing a pick-and-pay TV model futile, is coming anyway Forcing TV service providers to offer their customers television channels on a pick-and-pay basis would be a waste of time, a new study says. The C.D. Howe Institute report released Thursday says ever-changing technology will soon put viewers squarely in the driver’s seat, allowing them to choose everything they watch one program at a time. And it suggests it would be better for regulators to determine whether broadcasters should continue to be required to fund the production of Canadian content. The study also opposes

the idea of forcing new video-distribution services, such as Netflix, to pay into funds that subsidize such content. Entitled Let the Market Decide: The Case Against Mandatory Pick-and-Pay, the study comes as the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission conducts a comprehensive review of how consumers get their TV programming and how they pay for it. The Harper government has been promoting the pick-and-pay model as good for consumers.
The government granted six movie and television production companies permission to use drones for filming, an important step toward greater use of the technology by commercial operators, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced Thursday. Dozens of other industries are lined up to follow Hollywood’s lead. Until now, the Federal Aviation Administration, which is part of the Transportation Department, had banned commercial drone operations with the exception of a lone oil company in Alaska. New warnings are emerging of a security flaw known as the “Bash” bug, which cyber experts say may pose a serious threat to devices using Unixbased operating systems such as Linux and Mac OS X. Beyond computers, devices ranging from home Internet routers to systems used to run factory floors and power plants to medical equipment could be affected. The Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team in the U.S. issued a warning about the vulnerability this week. Experts are divided over whether the bug could pose a bigger threat than the
Heartbleed computer security flaw discovered earlier this year. Security company Rapid7 said that while the vulnerability “looks pretty awful at first glance,” hackers will not be able to exploit most systems running the affected Bash software. The Heartbleed bug exploited a key piece of security technology used by hundreds of thousands of websites. For more than two years before it was discovered, the flaw exposed passwords and other sensitive data to hackers who could steal that information. The reason the Bash bug could be worse than Heartbleed is because it gives the attacker a bigger advantage than Heartbleed did, said Tod Beardsley, engineering manager at Rapid7. With Heartbleed, attackers could get an information leak. With the Bash bug, they can get “remote code execution,” a way to take control of the affected device to install programs or
run commands, he said. The bug is rated a maximum 10 out of 10 for its impact and ease of exploitability by the Common Vulnerability Scoring System, an industry standard for assessing how bad security flaws are. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Synopsis
Washington plays a home improvement store worker by day, righter of wrongs by night. He’s a former black ops commando trying to leave his violent ways in the past but just when he thought that part of his life was over, the Russian mob leans on him because he tried to protect a young woman (Chloë Grace Moretz) from her violent pimp. When he singlehandedly wipes out the East Coast wing of the Russian mob, Teddy (Marton Csokas) — an enforcer from Moscow — arrives to put an end to McCall’s one-man search for justice. • Richard: ••••• • Mark: ••••• Denzel Washington returns to the action genre with The Equalizer. The Equalizer. Denzel Washington’s acting chops carry this thriller about a man with a regular life who is pretty talented in using tools as weapons of mass destruction Richard: Mark, The Equalizer is more elegant than Liam Neeson’s recent action movies but less viscerally satisfying. All the elements of Neeson’s Eurotrash thrillers are in place — tattooed bad guys and the “seasoned” hero with a “special set of skills” — but the pace is
much slower. The point of the story is that McCall equalizes situations, using his talents to help the downtrodden, but it takes about 30 minutes before any settling of scores happens. We meet McCall, learn about his orderly life but we don’t learn anything about his past. He’s Denzel and ergo, a badass, but the first half-hour of this movie could have snapped things up a bit by illuminating his past. Mark: Richard, withholding information must be what passes for suspense in this thriller. But I can accept a slow burn off the top if the rest of the movie ignites.
But the plot and tone of the movie is standard stuff, as you say. What lifts the rote material into the stratosphere is Denzel, who is such a good actor we forget we’re watching an expensive Steven Seagal flick. RC: It is a slow burn that does build some tension, and by the time McCall unleashes hell on the Russian mobsters, it comes as a bit of a catharsis. Now the movie is rolling! Except that it isn’t. It takes ages for McCall to open another can of whoop-ass. Instead director Antoine Fuqua has elected to gradually build up to a wild showdown in a massive hardware store. Who knew those places
were so dangerous? The climax is tense and inventive — apparently there is no home improvement device that cannot be turned into a WMD — but it is a more standard blockbuster-movie ending than you might expect from a movie so stingy with the action in the first hour. MB: Homeowners ... killing homeowners, as the jingle sorta goes. I liked the set piece at the end; it was very well directed, and I have no quibble with the technical virtuosity of the movie. Denzel’s tactiturn hero is mysterious and engaging. But when I thought about it, all of the hero’s efforts to eliminate the Russian mob
in Boston would only result in the ascendancy of the Irish mob. And what’s Bill Pullman doing in the movie with three lines? Time to fire his agent? RC: Pullman did have the nicer house, though, so I guess that counts for something. Overall it’s a good movie and Denzel is, as always, charismatic and interesting, but as he says, paraphrasing Hemingway, if “the old man gotta be the old man,” then The Equalizer gotta be more of an action movie to be completely satisfying. MB: I might say the violence was often gratuitous, but there’s not much of a movie without it.

Examining Xavier Dolan’s Oedipal world Mommy. Director talks about his fascination with mothers and sons and making films about them anne Brodie
scene@metronews.ca
“I have no culture. I’m ignorant. I have a high school diploma and I’ve seen eight films.” Quite the admission from Quebec’s boy wonder Xavier Dolan who has accrued 36 awards with just five major features since 2009. I Killed My Mother, Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Tom at the Farm and his latest Mommy catapulted him onto the world stage at Cannes, four winning major prizes. Dolan is hands-on in all elements of his films and has a successful acting and voice-over career. Dolan says he has no culture, but it’s clear he creates it. And he’s just 25. Mommy finds us in familiar Dolan mother/son territory. The widowed Diane (Anne Dor-
val) and her violent, mentally ill teenaged son Steve (AntoineOlivier Pilon) find it hard to function together or integrate into society. They are perpetual youngsters in a love-hate relationship that recalls his 2009 film I Killed My Mother. “I was ready to go back to mother and sons and I realized I’d never left them,” says Dolan. “They’d always been in my movies somehow, sometimes in the background and sometimes in the spotlight. I Killed My Mother was about schemes compared to Mommy, which is really about an existential crisis between two people who love each other more than the world. They love each other so much they cannot live together.” Dolan picked the word Mommy from all the terms for mother as it describes their refusal to grow up. “Mommy is what children call their moms. They don’t say ma, or mom or mother except if you’re on the Titanic. They say mommy when they’re really small. Both Die and Steve are two children; they’re just babies. Die is an eternal teenager and Steve just
will never be a grown-up; he’s a little baby.” Mommy is set in a “fictionalized Canada” in which a parent may deposit an incorrigible child in an institution indefinitely. “The thing about mental illness is that it is unpredictable. Steve doesn’t think, ‘Well, I’m going to go home and burn the house down.’ He’s a good kid, but he’s a ticking bomb. He does not control his outbursts. It’s important for me to portray how unpredictable relationships are when mental illness is in the household.” Dolan stars in the upcoming psychological drama The Elephant Song in which he’s confined to a psychiatric hospital. And he’s reportedly starring opposite Taylor Lautner in Gus Van Sant’s untitled project based on a New Yorker Magazine article. Not so long ago, Dolan complained of sitting around waiting for the phone to ring and petting his cat. “It sure has changed. First I’m allergic to cats, I stopped doing laundry, I just buy new briefs, I travel so much I don’t have time to wash them.”
Mommy, which opens in select theatres next Friday, has been submitted in the best foreign language film category at the Academy Awards. torstar Ratings and synopses courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes. For more movie reviews, trailers and news go to RottenTomatoes.com. Ratings: Certified Fresh:

Genesis Rodriguez is a pretty big nerd Tusk. Actress says she has a passion for building robots and welding things Ned Ehrbar
Metro World News in Hollywood
Geeks of the world, you’re about to fall in love with Genesis Rodriguez. There’s no point in resisting. The actress, appearing in Kevin Smith’s totally insane Tusk, used to be part of an all-girl BattleBots team. Her words, not ours. “We were an all-girls robotics team. We looked like we were kick-ass, cool-ass girls who had ribbons in their hair but were like, ‘We’re going to kick your ass!’” Rodriguez tells Metro. “We did competitions, like national competitions. We went to the Kennedy Space Center, we went to a convention in Oklahoma. I was involved with the pneumatics of the robot. I wasn’t so much into getting the precise degree and cuts of angles and things
— I was a welder.” Yes, welding. Rodriguez thinks women have the edge when it comes to that particular trade. “I think girls make better welders than men because we take time with our tacks and our welds, we’re detailed and we make it look pretty,” she says with a laugh. “It’s fun. Just the smell of it is just ... I love the oil. The light, it’s hypnotizing. You could be there all day just looking at it. It’s kind of cool. But yeah, building robots was super-awesome.” Rodriguez acknowledges that when people first look at her, they might not immediately think “welding” and “robots,” but that’s their loss. “It’s not something that you’d expect, but it was just a fun time. You’re actually thinking something in your head and then executing it and actually seeing it done. I think it’s just
a really cool school program that should be promoted more. And you’re having fun with your friends and working on a crocodile robot. How cool is that? So what was it her kick-ass team created? “Basically, it was really a tough robot, a crocodile,” she explains. “It was built at an angle, so it would come under you and just chomp you down into pieces and break you down. So even if you’re a bigger robot in size, it could just scoop you from under — trip it and kill it.” And if robots aren’t enough for you, she’s also an avid Shark Week aficionado, something that helped her build more appreciation for the massive beast at the centre of Tusk, the walrus. “I was watching Shark Week this last time, and I realized that sharks do not mess with walruses. They don’t,” she says.

Spike Lee. Filmmaker picks up Pioneer award at Montreal black film fest Spike Lee has been described as one of the angriest filmmakers in the United States, but he jokingly suggested Wednesday he was worried about a bit of ire coming his way during a news conference in Montreal. “We’re not going to talk about the Rangers beating the Habs last year, are we?” said the diehard sports fan, referring to the Montreal Canadiens’ elimination from last season’s Stanley Cup playoffs at the hands of his hometown New York team. “We’re not bringing that up?” Lee didn’t have to worry. He appeared at the Montreal International Black Film Festival where he was to be presented with the event’s first Pioneer award by P.K. Subban, the Habs cocaptain. “He’s a great player,” Lee said before the award ceremony, adding he watched Subban play in New York last season and waved at him during the pre-game skate. “I’ve noticed a lot more players of colour in the National Hockey League. The Rangers need to get one.”

Spike Lee cracked jokes about the New York Rangers beating the Montreal Canadiens during his visit to Montreal Wednesday. the canadian press
The ceremony was to precede the Canadian premiere of Lee’s new film Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, a romantic horror comedy. The event coincides with the 25th anniversary of Lee’s landmark film Do the Right Thing, about racial tensions in Brooklyn. Lee acknowledged a lot has changed in the last 25 years. “Twenty-five years ago, I would have never thought there would be an AfricanAmerican president,” he said. “That’s something that happened, so there have
been many great developments. But there are more African-Americans who are in poverty now than there were back 25 years ago and police are still killing black people.” He also pointed out that while there are more black stars, “black people are not taking over Hollywood.” Lee, who is credited with helping revolutionize modern black cinema, said there is still a need for more diversity — including more women, Asians, and Hispanics — on TV and behind the scenes in TV and movies. What’s sauce for the boss is epic eating Epic Meal Empire. YouTube stars serve up gut-busting fare on new television series
In a class all his own
The four guys behind Epic Meal Empire have devoured cheeseburger-stuffed lasagna, pizza cupcakes and Tex-Mex sushi. So what’s the grossest thing they’ve ever eaten? “Dried apricots and dried papayas,” says founder Harley Morenstein with disgust. The Montreal-based kitchen crew genuinely loves calorie-laden comfort food. And after racking up 600 million YouTube views for their Epic Meal Time videos, they’re bringing their passion for gut-busting concoctions to the small screen. In Epic Meal Empire, airing Mondays on FYI, the gang moves to Los Angeles and cooks up artery-clogging fare for “extreme-food clients” — i.e. anyone with an excuse to consume meals that should probably only be eaten once in a lifetime. The crew, led by “Sauce Boss” Morenstein and his friends Josh Elkin, Ameer Atari and Dave Heuff, sees moving from YouTube to TV as a natural progression. “I don’t mind saying that I like Epic Meal Empire better than Epic Meal Time,” declared Morenstein, 29, in an interview. Back in 2010, he was a substitute high school teacher in his hometown of Montreal when he began experimenting in video production. Epic Meal Time was born when he and his friends created an elaborate “cheat meal” — ironically, amid efforts to promote health and fitness. “After the first episode,

They build a “Taterbot,” a giant robot made of Tater Tots, licorice and grilled cheese. Other wild concoctions in the show: A Cinnabon battleship with a cream cheese frosting churro cannon, an eight-foot chicken (made of chicken tenders and 100 eggs) on roller skates and an edible car they also claim is “driveable.” A bigger budget allows the guys to be more imaginative with their meals, but network television has its drawbacks. 3 songs for the weekend A Taqwacore single, a lush tune from a man with selfie-mania and an Australian singer-songwriter who’s getting lots of buzz
••••• If you have to buy toys to play a video game, it had better be awesome. This is The Incredibles play set from last year. It uses the same city and button-mashing style of missions, but with the heroes and villains swapped out for Marvel replacements. True, The Avengers have different abilities, but given that last year’s set included three five-hour adventures and this just one, it’s all disappointingly similar. Building custom worlds is more rewarding. Kris Abel

This one-man electronic band from Moscow was inspired by “selfie-mania,” which (in Russia, at least) is “a mental disorder typical for a person who can’t stop himself from taking selfies.” Sound familiar?
This group of Pakistani ex-pats live and work in Boston, where they practise a form of rock called Taqwacore, which is a form of Muslim punk. This is their latest single.
This 23-year-old Melbourne singersongwriter has been getting lots of attention at home in Australia, thanks to her blend of dramatic pop and American blues. Her debut EP, Meg Mac, came out earlier this month.

Christopher Walken will play one-handed antagonist Captain Hook in NBC’s Dec. 4 show Peter Pan Live!, producer Neil Meron has revealed on Twitter. The broadcast is to star Allison Williams (Girls) as Peter Pan. Hook still sports the longhaired, moustached look of his 1953 Disney cartoon compatriot, complete with garish red coat, but this
time swaps white ruffles for a golden garment and dark undershirt, contrasting with the green-clad Pan. Newcomers Taylor Louderman and Alanna Saunders play Wendy Darling and Tiger Lily respectively, while Christian Borle (The Sound of Music Live!) and five-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara are also involved. Lucky Luciano looks for a new dream Boardwalk Empire. Vincent Piazza reflects on acclaimed series as it airs its final season
was like, ‘Oh.’ And that’s when I became a bookworm and was watching every documentary, reading every biography, just went to work in trying to learn more about the time.
Vincent Piazza is pondering his next move. His critically acclaimed series, Boardwalk Empire, created by Terence Winter and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, is in its fifth and final season on HBO Canada (Sundays, 9 p.m. EDT.) Piazza, 38, plays Charles “Lucky” Luciano, a leading Mafia figure in the United States. “It’s like my dream ended here. Now I need to re-dream something else,” he said. One possibility is writing. “I love writing. I love telling stories, and I’m going to try and give a crack at that for a bit.” In a recent interview, Piazza shared his thoughts on co-star Steve Buscemi and what he kept from the set.
What did you learn from Steve Buscemi? Steve has been so gracious to me and all the actors that I get to see him interact with, and he’s such a great leader. As an example, it was the first episode that we were shooting of the entire show, and I’m a huge Steve Buscemi fan, but I’m also getting the feel of it. I don’t know the hours, I don’t know a TV schedule that well. So, I was just getting to know everyone and spending time with the actors and the crew, and I look over and I see Steve just in his chair, his eyes closed, just sitting there. I go, ‘Oh, interesting. He wants time to himself. OK, anyway, carrying on ...’ But by the 12th hour, 13th hour, 16th hour of the day,
Where were you when you got the role? I was in a little room in my (New York) apartment on 17th Street. I remember getting the call and I was just, ‘Wow.’ It was a wow moment, and then I had all this energy and excitement to begin, and I was like, ‘All right, when does it start?’ ‘Like in six months.’ And I
I’m just fighting to ... keep my energy up. I’m watching him just come out of his chair like, ‘All right, we’re ready to go.’ And I was like, ‘Wow.’ Those little things, you know, you pick up along the way. Just conserve your energy, stay focused. Yeah, there was a lot of great stuff that I learned by
watching him, as well as talking with him. Did you keep anything from the set? I kept my cigarette lighter because it was with me from the pilot. It took me about a year to not burn myself whenever I clicked it, because it’s an old lighter. You’ve got to flick it and try
and look cool like, ‘I’ve used this lighter all my life, since I was four when I started smoking.’ So we have this relationship, the lighter and I, and it’s been with me the whole way, always in my pocket or in the scene, so, yeah, it’s my little buddy. Boardwalk is so visually
spectacular. Could you pick up on that during filming? There was actually a moment last season when I was sitting back in the chair ... and I’m just staring at the monitor, and I looked and was like, ‘We’re in a moving oil painting.’ It is just so rich in colour and texture. It was really special. The Associated Press

What’s a little fur play between friends like Bowie and Jagger?
Mary-Kate swaps Cartier rock for band of gold, leading to marry chase Guys, we really dropped the ball on this one. Everyone’s been so focused on George Clooney getting married that we may have missed Mary-Kate Olsen’s wedding altogether. The 28-yearold actress, designer and Wonder Twin was spotted this week in the Hamptons with her fiancé, 45-yearold French banker Olivier
Sarkozy, both of them sporting what look like gold wedding bands — and the massive Cartier diamond ring Olsen used to wear was nowhere in sight. Which begs the question: Is there such a thing as a hobo chic wedding dress? And what self-respecting billionaire hangs out in the Hamptons after Labour Day?
Turns out the compulsion to make everything furlined in the 1970s was more about function than form — at least at David Bowie’s place. According to a new biography by Wendy Leigh, Bowie and his then-wife, Angela, had a four-foot-deep, fur-lined play area in their London flat affectionately dubbed “the pit” that was used for the some spectacu-

And you know who else wasn’t very happy with the stuff Miles Teller said? Miles Teller. After his rep did some damage control, Teller took to Twitter

Mick Jagger used to come there and be involved with sexual things,” Leigh writes. To be fair, though, I feel like Jagger could get business cards printed up that list his profession as “involved with sexual things.”
Depending on who you ask, Lindsay Lohan either had a great first night or a terrible first night during her London stage debut. Previews started this week for David Mamet’s Speedthe-Plow, and the first review, from the Daily Beast, is not terribly kind. “On the first night of pre-
views, a work-in-progress feel is to be expected,” Nico Hines writes. “But halfway through the second act of Speed-the-Plow, the audience was openly laughing at Lohan’s struggle to grasp Mamet’s sharp, trademark dialogue.” Some audience members had fun with the gaffes, like Rafay Agha, who tweeted, “Major kudos to the woman who was feeding Lindsay Lohan her lines from offstage.” But a tweet from one of her fans tells a different story. “According to all attendees of (Speedthe-Plow), Lindsay Lohan owned her part. As if doubt were plausible,” writes Peyton Pittman. I just don’t know who to believe anymore.

Myths of French grapes LIQUID ASSETS
Peter Rockwell @therealwineguy liquidassets@eastlink.ca
French wines have an image problem. No matter how closely associated the country is with fermented grape juice, it struggles to shake the myth that it only makes wine for rich experts and not the average oenophile. While its wines can get pricey, those big guns make up a paltry percentage of its total output. You can easily find wine from France for the same price as your fave bottle from Australia or Italy. Other misconceptions about French wines are that their labels are hard to understand, their flavours are too aggressive and they’re only meant to be drunk with food. Though there may be a wee bit of truth to all three complaints, don’t let that intimidate you. Ripe, balanced and fruit-forward, the wines from the southern regions are a great introduction (or reintroduction) to France. The 2012 Petites Folies Merlot-Cabernet ($15.95 $16.99) takes a page from the New World handbook with juicy, red berry aromas and a thick, jammy flavour flow worthy of your best rack of lamb recipe. QMHL. Canadiens prospect looks to help Mooseheads win first home game of season KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE
kristen.lipscombe@metronews.ca
Zachary Fucale may have been one of a half-dozen goaltenders at this year’s Montreal Canadiens training camp, but for the Halifax Mooseheads, he’s the one expected to get the job done between the pipes. Fucale, selected 36th overall by the Canadiens in the second round of the 2013 NHL entry draft, has returned to Halifax after a couple of weeks spent in Montreal, first skating with the rookies, and then sticking around for a few days with the big boys. “I’m very satisfied and proud of what I achieved during camp,” the Rosemère, Que., native said Thursday after his first practice back on Scotiabank Centre ice. “I came out stronger than I came in,” he said, “and as a better goalie, better person and better teammate.” The Canadiens sent the 19-year-old netminder back to the Mooseheads in time to start Friday’s home game against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, which starts at 7 p.m. Fucale, who struggled at times in the QMJHL playoffs last year, was the first player released from Montreal prior to pre-season play. “We get to learn about (adversity) right away, so I think it’s going to help us,” Fucale said. Also expected to help out are defenceman Matt Murphy, 19, and forward Philippe Gadoury, 20, who are making comebacks of their own from
Ottawa Senators main camp and Canadiens rookie camp, respectively. “All we have to do is prepare for that first action,” Fucale said of tonight’s puck drop. “All that matters for me is that first shot ... (and) for the guys, that first shift.”
After that, it’s just a matter of staying focused, shot by shot, play by play, he said. Wise words coming from a guy who sounds like he’s been to a couple of NHL camps, learning from the likes of netminders Carey Price, Peter Budaj and Dustin Tokarski. “When you’re just talking to guys like that, you catch on to little things they do,” Fucale said. “You watch them in the gym, how they work, their work ethic, how determined they are and what it really takes. You can feel it off them.”

During the raucous celebration that followed, Jeter said he’s played his final game at shortstop, but he’ll likely play in some capacity this weekend in Boston. It appeared Jeter’s tie-

Star player to star coach. Patrick Roy won’t rest on his laurels After putting up 112 points and winning the Jack Adams Trophy as coach of the year in his first season behind an NHL bench, what can Patrick Roy possibly do for an encore? Even a coach with Roy’s self-confidence doesn’t see his second season with the gifted young Colorado Avalanche going that well. “There are a lot of coaches that are better than me, but I believe I’ll continue to learn,” Roy said Thursday. “And the worst part of this is, I’m sure I’m going to be a better coach along the way and I’m probably never going to win the Jack Adams again. “It was a great year. It was fun, but now it’s behind us.” The Avalanche are on a two-game swing through Roy’s old patch, with games Thursday night in Montreal, where he starred for the Canadiens for 10 seasons, and Friday night in Quebec City, where he built the Remparts into a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League power after his Hall of Fame playing career ended. PGA. Undefeated American duo to face new European pair at Gleneagles Phil Mickelson poked fun at Rory McIlroy. Now they get to face off in the Ryder Cup. Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, undefeated as a team two years ago at Medinah, face the European powerhouse of McIlroy and Sergio Garcia in the opening session of fourballs on Friday at Gleneagles. “We’re looking to hand them their first defeat tomorrow morning,” McIlroy said. They will be the anchor match of what should be a fascinating opening session. U.S. captain Tom Watson made sure all three of his rookies were on the course at Gleneagles right away, and two of them are partners — 21-yearold Jordan Spieth and 24-yearold Patrick Reed, the youngest pairing in Ryder Cup history. Europe captain Paul McGinley put together four pairings who have never played together in a Ryder Cup. That includes McIlroy and Garcia, who he said have become fast friends over the summer and asked to play together. “The fun is only starting now,” McGinley said. Mickelson took a playful jab at McIlroy on Wednesday when he said the best part of American unity is the players don’t “litigate against each other.” McIlroy has a court battle against his former management company, and the lawsuit involves Graeme McDowell.

McIlroy told Golf Channel on Thursday that he “got a couple of jabs back” at the gala dinner on Wednesday. “I know Phil well and we had a couple of laughs about it,” McIlroy said. Mickelson and Bradley went 2-1-1 as partners in the Presidents Cup last year, so they are not unbeatable. And while they faced some of Europe’s strongest tandems at Medinah — including handing Garcia and Luke Donald their first loss in foursomes — this might be the toughest yet.
“It’s going to be a difficult match against what we perceive as the strongest team that Europe has,” Mickelson said. Watson went with his strength at the top. He chose Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson in the opening match against Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson. Watson and Simpson won both fourballs matches at Medinah, beating both opponents on the 14th hole. Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker will play the second match against Martin Kaymer
and Thomas Bjorn, the 43-yearold Dane who is playing in the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2002. Both captains said their plan was for all 12 players to be on the course by the end of Friday. “People are going to say there is real strength at the top, real strength at the bottom,” McGinley said. “It’s really strength all over. I really, really rate this American team. We’re going to have to be on if we’re going to beat them.” The Associated Press
Four-man bobsled now co-ed Kaillie Humphries will be the test case, the guinea pig if you will, on females racing with and against men in bobsled. The two-time Olympic gold medallist in women’s bobsled has been given the green light to pilot a fourman sled with male brakemen. The governing body FIBT essentially declared Thursday that four-man bobsled is “gender neutral,” which allows for mixed teams and all-female teams to compete
against men’s four-man sleds. Humphries asked the FIBT at the organization’s congress in May to allow her to pilot a men’s sled. With just six weeks until the start of the 2014-15 racing season, the executive committee essentially said yes. While it leaves national bobsled federations scrambling to figure out how this will work, Humphries was elated Thursday. “This day and age, it’s something I feel the world
is ready for,” the Calgarian said. “I need new challenges and this is a huge one. I think for me knowing another four-year cycle means pushing myself, pushing the limits, the target on my back is a lot bigger. “I don’t want to ever become complacent. And I know this is a challenge that will not allow that to happen. This is something that will challenge me mentally and physically to step up my game.” The Canadian Press

Horoscopes by Sally Brompton
Aries
March 21 - April 20 You seem to have overdone it and need time to recover from your exertions. Even so, Aries is never inactive for long and come the beginning of next week you’ll be on the go again.
Libra
Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Developments in your social life may have the edge taken off them by bad news concerning your finances today. Mercury’s move into the money area of your chart tomorrow will bring an obvious answer.
Taurus
April 21 - May 21 Something will happen over the next few days that undermines your confidence. Be that as it may everything will be resolved when Venus, your ruler, changes signs next week.
Gemini
May 22 - June 21 The setbacks of recent months can now be seen in a more positive light. Even when you were on the receiving end of bad news it was teaching you and toughening you up.
Cancer
June 22 - July 23 Take advantage of the Sun moving through Libra to sit back and relax. If you have not finished something by now chances are it will never see the light of day, so forget it.
Leo
July 24 - Aug. 23 Don’t think about all the bad things that go on in the world – think about how you personally can make it a better place in some small way. Get to it.
Virgo
Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 There are things going on behind the scenes of which you are only vaguely aware. Keep your eyes and ears open.
metronews.ca WEEKEND, September 26-28, 2014
Scorpio
Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Saturn in your sign does not seem restrictive of late but that does not mean you can loosen your hold on the purse strings.
Sagittarius
Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 On the work front someone is trying to undermine you by talking you down in front of employers. Don’t worry, they won’t get anywhere.
Capricorn
Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You have been keeping to yourself a lot in recent days and loved ones are are wondering why. Put their minds at rest by telling them your plans.
