When 20-year-old Jessica Wiebe returned from her tour in Afghanistan in September 2008, she had no words. Diagnosed with PTSD, it seemed that no amount of support from friends and family could help her open up. After all, Wiebe recalls, how could anyone back home realize what those six months living and fighting in Kandahar were like? “Most of what I’ve dealt with is not knowing how to deal with my experience,” Wiebe, now 26, said Tuesday. Art by Jessica Wiebe hangs at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Grand Parade on Tuesday. JEFF HARPER/METRO
The show runs until Nov. 28 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
That’s when the Manitoba native, who grew up with a love for drawing and painting, turned to art. “I reached for art, and when I started expressing myself, the healing kind of went along with it,” she said. Wiebe, currently in her final year of study at NSCAD in Halifax, is exhibiting nearly 50 of her drawings and paintings in a show entitled Bearing Arms, B(e)aring Wounds at St. Paul’s Anglican Church. “I never meant for a lot of this work to be shown in a public space,” she revealed, saying all of the work in the show was created over the past seven years and visualizes her personal healing. Her work illustrates the war through the eyes of a solider: From black-and-white drawings of soldiers sitting and reading together; to large collages of sketched barbedwire fences and tanks next to Wiebe’s written words. “There are some things that I do want to keep personal, but there’s a lot I’m exposing,” Wiebe explained. “I’m exposing those vulnerabilities of being a human be-
ing in a war zone.” The veteran who was once without words recently launched an art program at the Military Family Resource Centre in Halifax to help soldiers and veterans, many of whom also suffer from PTSD, use art to aid the healing process. Growth
“Without the military experience I had, I wouldn’t be where I am with my artwork.” Jessica Wiebe Wiebe plans to continue working with soldiers after she graduates, with tentative plans to visit different army bases to host sketching workshops. She hopes to one day pitch the idea for an art program to the military. “I realized that as a Canadian soldier I’ve had this experience that the majority of the population will never have,” she said.

Councillors approve changing tax rates
Members of Halifax Regional Council are shown in this file photo. JEFF HARPER/METRO
Councillor salary formula to get four-year checkups Update. Motion passes to have current formula for annual salary adjustments reviewed independently every pre-election year A Halifax regional councillor got enough support to pass a change to the way councillors’ salaries are set, despite strident opposition from some veteran representatives. Coun. Steve Craig’s motion to have an independent committee review the formula that adjusts councillors’ salaries every four years passed at regional council by a narrow vote of nine to seven on Tuesday afternoon.

“Probably somebody got a report in history saying the world was flat. They kept looking and found it wasn’t. How do we know this is the best formula? We really haven’t looked.” Coun. Tim Outhit
Councillors’ salaries are currently adjusted every year based on a formula that uses weighted averages of elected representative’s salaries in seven other cities. It was established by a three-person committee in 2004, and reviewed by that same committee — which recommended no change — in 2010. “This is about policy. This is not about the number,” said Craig. “The methodology that was used in the past which
some councillors have spoken to and said it was great ... that can be done again. All I’m asking is that it be reviewed every four years.” Opponents questioned Craig’s motivation, and attacked the proposal to have an independent committee review the formula one year before every municipal election. “The reason the formula’s in place is to take the politics out of it, to keep it away from us so that we don’t screw with

NEWS
Regional councillors have approved a change to the city’s tax structure that one representative called a “watershed moment” for the municipality’s rural areas. “We’ve finally come to this day, correcting the errors of the past because of the inequities and the inertia of councils of the past not trying to deal with an issue,” said Coun. David Hendsbee. “Today I think is a watershed moment.” Council’s committee of the whole approved recommendations from city staff that eliminated area rates on some recreational facilities and, in doing so, eliminated distinct tax rates for urban, suburban and rural residents. City staff recommended classifying all recreational facilities as municipal, community or private facilities, depending on the level of service and public access. Any facility designated as municipal would be paid for by general taxes, while community facilities would be covered by area rates. As a result of the reclassification, 10 area rates were eliminated and rolled into the general tax rates. That also eliminated the only real difference between the suburban and rural tax boundaries. “Should council general rate municipal recreation facilities ... the suburbanrural area will have identical general tax rates,” states a staff report. The change would result in a $31 benefit to residential taxpayers currently paying area rates, and an $8 cost to those who aren’t. RUTH DAVENPORT/METRO
it,” said Coun. Brad Johns. “And what are we doing? We’re here screwing with it.” Supporters said, however, that any policy should be subject to periodic review and said if the current formula is the best one for adjusting salaries, it will stand up to regular scrutiny. “We may end up with the same policy that’s in place now for the next 50 years,” said Coun. Jennifer Watts. “There may be absolutely no change because in fact that is the absolute right policy. But it allows the opportunity for ... the check-in.” The committee will be convened by the municipal auditor general, and will make its first report to council by the end of August 2015. ‘We were kicked in the gut’ Labour. President of NSGEU accuses Nova Scotia Nurses Union of sabotage The leader of Nova Scotia’s largest health-care union is accusing a nurses’ union of sabotaging a united labour front that would have avoided having an arbitrator decide which unions will represent health workers. Joan Jessome, the president of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, says the Nova Scotia Nurses Union didn’t agree to

create a bargaining association that allowed union members to remain in existing bar-
gaining units. “It’s like we were kicked in the gut,” Jessome said Tuesday, hours after the collapse of mediation talks between the province’s health authorities and unions that represent health-care workers.
The Nova Scotia Nurses Union represents more than 6,700 registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nurse practitioners, while the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union represents 4,371 registered nurses and licensed practical nurses. Jessome said she believes the Nova Scotia Nurses Union isn’t interested in her proposal because it stands to gain nurses from her union under government-mandated binding arbitration. “The fact the NSNU walked away from an association ... technically sabotaged the opportunity for us to get an asso-
ciation,” she said. Janet Hazelton, the president of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, was unavailable for comment. Her union issued a news release saying the government’s law has put unions in a difficult position and does little to foster good relations within the labour movement. “The parties, including the employers, could not agree on a common solution,” said the news release. The provincial government appointed arbitrator James Dorsey last month under legislation that shrinks the number of bargaining units from 50 to four — with distinct bargaining
units for nurses, health-care workers, clerical staff and support staff. The legislation will also reduce the number of district health authorities to two from 10 as of April 1. A 45-day arbitration process began Tuesday and arbitrator James Dorsey is expected to deliver a decision by Jan. 1. An arbitration hearing will be held beginning Dec. 9, though Jessome said her union has asked the arbitrator to first hear a constitutional challenge to the law. She said she expects a decision from Dorsey this week on whether he will hear that issue. The Canadian Press

Caleb Doary. Police ID student killed in crash Halifax Regional Police have identified the 17-year-old boy killed in a two-vehicle crash last Friday afternoon. Caleb Doary of Brookside died at the scene after the car he was driving was hit by a pickup truck on Northwest Arm Drive. Police say the accident happened at the end of Ramp 1D off Highway 102, when Doary’s car was turning left towardsFairview and was hit by a pickup truck travelling south on Northwest Arm Drive. Doary was a Grade 12 French immersion student in the International Baccalaureate program at Halifax West High School, according to his obituary. On Sunday, the school opened for two hours to offer support for grieving students. “Although his life was cut much too short, he lived every day to its fullest,” the obituary said. His obituary said Doary’s interests included reading, soccer, rock climbing, camping, martial arts, Christian Youth Group and debate club. Doary had worked at a children’s camp in

On Tuesday, Vuic’s defence lawyer requested more time for his client to enter a plea. The judge agreed, postponing the formal reading of charges against the accused and entry of plea until Feb. 9, 2015. Metro has also learned Vuic is facing a single charge of possession of cocaine from the
same alleged incident, and he has made a promise to appear in court on that allegation on Dec. 17. Following the incident on Oct. 7, the Mooseheads suspended Vuic for three weeks before he returned to the lineup on Oct. 24.

Brandon Vuic didn’t dress for the Mooseheads in either game against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last weekend. He last played for Halifax on Nov. 5.

Building ideas in the sandbox IDEA. Universities, province team up for innovation project Andreas Hart found his Christmas present in a sandbox this year. On Tuesday, the 23-year-old Hart joined Premier Stephen McNeil, Dalhousie University’s president Richard Florizone and members of the university’s engineering faculty during the launch of the Innovative Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA) Sandbox. “We know that no one does anything alone. No one sector owns innovation.” Dr. Richard Florizone brainwaves into reality. “This has really been about fostering the innovation, fostering the young mind … to allow them to take their idea to drive jobs,” McNeil told reporters at the event, held at Dalhousie’s Sexton campus, home of the sandbox. The sandbox provides 3-D printers, computer-aided design (CAD) software and wood and metal shops for creating prototypes. Activities include a concept development training camp, six-week summer innovation boot camp and seminars.
Like a real sandbox, McNeil said, the program encourages imagination and creativity, which are “at the core” of innovation. An avid surfer, Hart graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Dalhousie this spring. Like many grads, he said he was “back to broke” but wanted to pursue a dream of creating surfboards. The IDEA Sandbox gave Hart his own workshop and the ability to learn from business professors at the university, which helped get Hart Surf Co. going. He can now focus on shaping EPS foam into surfboards, using a computer-controlled machine he invented. “Getting a space to work is like Christmas,” said the Dartmouth native. “I’ve always wanted to design, use fluid dynamics and make something beautiful.” Haley Ryan/Metro
Casey seeks Grit nomination Bill Casey is coming back to politics. About five years after he retired from the House of Commons, the 69-year-old Brookdale resident announced Tuesday that he will seek the federal Liberal nomination in Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley. If he wins the nomination, it will pit him against Conservative MP Scott Armstrong, who was president of the riding association when Casey was the Tory member of parliament. “I’ve never lost my interest in politics and have followed it

That’s the motivator.” Casey beat malignant melanoma in 2006 and prostate cancer in 2008 and suffered a heart attack in August 2013. Former Halifax resident Sarah McLachlan returns to our doorstep Wednesday night, and she’s bringing with her a catalogue of music that, for many, created the sweet and soft soundtrack that played in the background as they grew up. McLachlan credits her success to her lyrical honesty and openness — an organic tactic that, over the years, has become even more refined. “My music seems to resonate with a lot of people — I speak from an emotional
place, I touch on a lot of things that people are going through,” she said. Once a local talent, McLachlan, who is performing at the Scotiabank Centre, took her talent to the West Coast after finishing at Queen Elizabeth High School. Though an understandable move given her choice of career, the move set in motion a rumour of her dislike for our fair city that haunts McLachlan to this day. Setting the salacious gossip to rest — now and forever — McLachlan candidly explains: “Junior high and high school were unmitigated hell. Who were they not for? I call bull to the
person who believed high school was so great. “I loved growing up in Halifax — I had an amazing childhood as I had so much freedom. Halifax was safe, and it was small and people were really friendly. That part was great.” Rest easy that our native songstress harbours no ill will for our thriving, yet quaint, metropolis — her irritation rests in the unavoidable struggles of puberty. That aside, McLachlan is ready to bring home her latest work, Shine On. Her eighth studio album is an extension of her ability to craft relatable stories. “I’m really proud of this
one — I love these songs and they took me to another place — I edited myself much less. I felt like I had strong enough stories to tell that I didn’t have to shroud them in other characters or other avenues.” Blessed with the “additional modicum of wisdom that comes with being 46,” McLachlan continues to find new levels of herself within her craft. “I’m just going to lay it out there — it feels like me, it feels whole and honest and strong, and that’s good enough for me.” What’s happening?

Although Halifax police say four pedestrians being hit in crosswalks over the past two days is “unusual,” the spike does match a trend of collision numbers going up this time of year. On Tuesday just before 2 p.m., a 27-year-old woman was hit by a pickup truck as she was using a marked crosswalk on Brunswick Street when the vehicle turned left onto Brunswick from Cornwallis Street, Halifax Regional Police say. Boudreau’s boat shown to jury Lobster fisherman. Jurors told four shots hit the vessel from different angles The damaged boat that Phillip Boudreau was aboard before he disappeared in a Cape Breton harbour was shown to the jury on Tuesday at the seconddegree murder trial of a man who has pleaded not guilty in Boudreau’s slaying. Jurors crowded around the four-metre vessel in the basement of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Port Hawkesbury as an RCMP civilian firearms expert pointed to four gashes in different areas of the boat he said were bullet holes. Joseph Prendergast, who said he examined the boat two days after Boudreau’s disappearance on June 1, 2013, finding one bullet lodged in it. “The bullet was located in this general area … just below this piece of fibreglass,” he said, pointing to an area in between
two rear seats. Prendergast testified about the trajectory of the bullets and indicated the different points where each would have entered and exited the boat. Landry, 67, sat emotionless during the proceedings Tuesday, often crossing his arms as he listened to testimony. On Monday, Prendergast told the court that Boudreau’s boat was shot from different angles, based on his analysis of bullet holes, residue and fibres. Const. Tom McLeod, incident commander for the RCMP dive team tasked with finding the 43-year-old Boudreau, also told the trial Monday that his team found the motor from Boudreau’s boat on June 2, 2013, the day after he vanished. McLeod said based on the location of the motor and a number of other factors including wind and current speeds, the team searched an area of Mackerel Cove and they expected to find a body. But Boudreau’s body has never been found. The Crown has argued that Landry and two other lobster

Drake has said Boudreau’s boat overturned and Landry hooked him using a fishing gaff, dragging him out to sea before the three-man fishing crew tied an anchor to Boudreau’s neck and upper arms and dropped him in an area with a water depth of 22 metres. the canadian press
Indecent acts. Windsor man faces new charges after more victims speak up A Windsor man is facing additional charges after RCMP say two more victims came forward with information about indecent acts. Around 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 22, Windsor District RCMP received a report of a man allegedly exposing himself to a young child in the Town of Windsor.
At the time, RCMP said the man allegedly attempted to lure the child into a room where he was working. Police say when the child refused, the man pulled down his pants. Garrett Frederick Smith, 63, was arrested at his home and charged with performing an indecent act and invitation
to sexual touching. On Tuesday, RCMP announced three new charges of invitation to sexual touching, indecent exposure, and sexual interference after they say two more victims came forward. Smith will appear in Windsor provincial court on Dec. 2 and an investigation is continuing. metro
Some students attending one of Cape Breton’s largest high schools emerged Tuesday from a five-hour, hold-andsecure lockdown with a single complaint: They were hungry. Cape Breton Regional Police shut down Riverview Rural High School in Coxheath at 10:15 a.m. after receiving a report of a possible weapon or weapons inside the school. Students and teachers were ordered to stay in classrooms and not move until a thorough search was completed. Riverview is a Grade 10-12 school with about 900 students. “Police found no evidence of a weapon, or any threat to safety,” said police spokeswoman Desiree Vassallo. School was dismissed at the usual time under the watchful eye of police officers who remained on scene until everyone left the building. Charles Sheppard, coordinator of student services with the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board, said
the lockdown process was triggered after a note was found in a male washroom indicating there were weapons onsite. He said the note did not name any individual as a target. The police searched lockers and student backpacks among other things, but Sheppard said no weapons were found. “It went very well and we’re certainly pleased with the co-operation of students and staff,” he said. The school was surrounded
by 12 police vehicles while some 20 officers — including K-9 unit members, emergency response and patrol officers — carefully searched the school. “We first heard a rumour that it was because a moose was outside,” said Grade 11 student Sean McVicar. Grade 12 students Amber Phillips, Maggie Paul and Hannah Reid also said they heard a rumour about the moose, adding that they learned about a possible weapon threat on social media. cape breton post

Misconduct. Commons committee says it has no mandate to investigate Two suspended Liberal MPs remain in limbo after a multiparty committee determined it has no mandate to establish a process for investigating misconduct complaints between members of Parliament. The secretive board of internal economy, which oversees the operation of the House of Commons, has punted the matter over to another committee. Meanwhile, it has adopted interim measures which board spokesman John Duncan says could be used by the two Liberal MPs and the two female New Democrat MPs who’ve accused them of misconduct to informally resolve their dispute. “The (Liberal) MPs are in limbo until such time as the logjam is broken,” Duncan said. Those interim measures involve adopting elements of the process in place for dealing with sexual harassment
Politicizing the issue?
Ever since the suspension, the two parties have accused one another of politicizing the matter — the Liberals arguing Trudeau had a responsibility to act and the New Democrats saying the Liberal leader revictimized the women by publicly suspending the MPs.

U.S. Senate rejects bill to fast-track Keystone XL Defeated by one vote. Quoted Bill was designed to “What is everyone upset about? We’ve been buildcircumvent White House’s environmental ing pipelines for a long, long time — and we need to build this one.” review process Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Lousiana Democrat and a co-sponsor of the Keystone XL bill
The U.S. Senate has rejected a proposal to fast-track the approval of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. Pipeline supporters needed 60 votes to win approval for the bill, but it went down to defeat by a margin of 59-41. Had it passed, U.S. President Barack Obama was widely expected to veto the bill, which was designed to short-circuit the White House’s own environmental review process. Last week, Obama sug-
gested that Keystone XL would have a negligible positive impact on the U.S. economy, an assertion denied by both TransCanada Corp., the company behind it, and the Canadian government. On Tuesday, Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford insisted otherwise as he expressed disappointment in the result of the vote. “This project will create jobs, long term economic prosperity, energy security and en-
vironmental stewardship on both sides of our shared border,” he said in a statement. Further, Rickford continued, the State Department has already concluded that the project would not by itself result in increased output from the Alberta oilsands, and would replace “insecure sources” of crude with “a secure, reliable supply from Canada, North Dakota and Montana.” TransCanada Corp. has also long insisted the project would
Public service or career? Woman pushing for term limits for city councillors Tired of watching municipal incumbents hold power for years, even decades, Vass Bednar is leading a push for term limits on city councils. “Isn’t it undemocratic to elect the same people over and over again?” asked Bednar, who works as a researcher at the Martin Prosperity Institute in Toronto. In October, Toronto voters endorsed 37 of the 38 councillors who stood for re-election. It was a similar story last week in Vancouver, where nine of the city’s 10 incumbent councillors held on to their seats. Bednar wants to see municipal politicians limited to two terms. Bloc Québécois
She’s not alone. In Toronto, Coun. Mary-Margaret McMahon has vowed to step down after her second term. On her website, McMahon writes that “city politics is a public service, not a career.” York University professor Dennis Pilon agrees that incumbents hold too much power, but doesn’t believe term limits are the answer. “If you want a reform that would genuinely advance Toronto politics, then get rid of the ban on political parties,” he said, adding that parties can give aspiring councillors a leg up by associating them with a brand. CF-18s strike ISIL warehouse
A few days after brushing off the Bloc Québécois as insignificant, Pierre Karl Peladeau now says the sovereigntist party is in fact “quite relevant.” The man considered to be the candidate to beat if he seeks the Parti Québécois leadership recently told young PQ supporters in his Saint-Jerome riding that the Bloc “serves strictly no purpose” other than “to justify federalism.”
Canadian fighter jets and other coalition aircraft have flattened a warehouse near Mosul in northern Iraq as part of an operation against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Four CF-18s dropped eight bombs on the building, which was being used to train enemy fighters and to build roadside bombs and booby traps, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson said in a news release.

create tens of thousands of U.S. construction jobs. Greenpeace Canada, long an opponent of the project, cheered the Senate for rejecting the proposal on environmental grounds. Keystone XL “would enable the production of over 24 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year while threatening communities and their water supplies,” said spokesman Mike Hudema. As a result of the vote, the question of whether to approve the project is not likely to resurface until the new year, which is when the proKeystone Republicans will take over control of the Senate, wrested from the Democrats in midterm elections earlier this month. Residential school lawsuits delayed Former Newfoundland and Labrador residential school students suing for an apology and compensation listened Tuesday to procedural wrangling that could delay their case for months. Judge Robert Stack of the provincial Supreme Court said he’ll likely rule Monday on a federal application that derailed what was supposed to be the first day of a twomonth trial. Lawyer Jonathan Tarlton, representing the federal government in five certified class-action lawsuits, raised concerns that pre-trial filings
weren’t complete. Lawyers for the province and former operators of the schools blamed a procedural misunderstanding as they told Stack they weren’t ready. At issue was the extent to which these third- and fourthparty defendants, named by Ottawa and the province respectively, were expected to take part in the first of a proposed two-phase trial. The first part was to examine whether Ottawa breached any fiduciary or trust relationship with aboriginal students. The second phase would assess potential negligence in-
volving all parties. Lawyer Kirk Baert, representing the plaintiffs, said his legal team had taken pains to keep the already seven-yearold litigation focused on the federal government alone. His concern, he told Stack, was that additional defendants would raise complex and protracted issues. Lawyers for the federal government deny it was responsible for schools located in St. Anthony, Cartwright, North West River, Nain and Makkovik that opened before the province joined Confederation in 1949. Two Americans sought over mailing body parts Thai police issued arrest warrants Tuesday for two Americans who attempted to mail a preserved baby’s head, foot and other human body parts to the United States, saying the objects were stolen from a Thai medical museum. The bizarre case has quickly gained international attention, with Thai police asking Cambodian authorities to help locate the men, who travelled to the neighbouring country on Sunday, and the FBI helping with the investigation in the United States. Police questioned Ryan McPherson, 31, and his friend, Daniel Tanner, 33, over the weekend in Bangkok, but released them and allowed
them to travel to Cambodia. New elements then emerged after their departure, prompting the arrest warrants to be issued on charges of theft, possession of stolen items and falsely declaring items on shipping documents. “Our evidence indicates that they either stole the body parts, or they bought them from other people,” said police Maj. Gen. Sombat Milintachinda. Photos of the two closely resemble men by the same names and ages who, over a decade ago, were producers of a series featuring homeless people brawling and doing stunts. The “Bumfights” videos were banned in several
communities and generally shunned by retailers after criticism that the films’ subjects were being exploited. The case of the human body parts emerged over the weekend when parcel delivery company DHL said it scanned three U.S.-bound packages labeled as toys and detected five human body parts. DHL alerted police who tracked down the senders, McPherson and Tanner, and brought them in for questioning. They told police they had bought the body parts at a Bangkok night market — an infant’s head, a baby’s foot, an adult’s heart with a stab wound. the associated press

Canada’s biggest earners now a little less wealthy: Report Statistics Canada. The 1%’s share of the country’s overall income fell, while the 99%’s income shares stabilized or rose Canada’s mega-rich lost ground to the other 99 per cent, say newly released figures from Statistics Canada. The top one per cent of Canadian earners saw their share of the country’s overall income tumble to a six-year low in 2012, the agency said in a report Tuesday. The wealthiest Canadians, the data show, held 10.3 per cent of total earnings, a drop from a peak of 12.1 per cent in 2006.
Go West, young Canadians
For young Canadians looking to land a good job, the West is where it’s at, according to a new report released by the Fraser Institute on Tuesday. • The right-leaning thinktank said Alberta and Saskatchewan offer the best opportunities for the 25-to-34 set. • Ontario and Quebec have prospects that are just as dim as the Atlantic provinces, from which there’s long been a westward exodus of workers.
To qualify for the exclusive club, the report said an individual had to earn a minimum
of $215,700 in 2012, a feat achieved by 261,365 people who filed taxes that year. Women represented 21.3 per cent of the ranks of Canada’s super-wealthy in 2012 — nearly double their proportion of 11.4 per cent in 1982. “Although Canadian men represent the vast majority of the top income groups, the number and share of women in (the) top one per cent reached a 31-year high in 2012,” said the Statistics Canada report, which also elaborated on how much the gap narrowed overall. “The six-year period between 2006 and 2012 also marked, for the first time since 1982, a prolonged period in which the total income shares of the bottom 90 per cent, 95 per cent and 99 per cent of Canadian tax filers rose or stabilized.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
Small drones fall under existing FAA rules in U.S. The U.S. government has the power to hold drone operators accountable when they operate the remote-control aircraft recklessly, a federal safety board ruled Tuesday in a setback to small drone operators chafing under Federal Aviation Administration restrictions. The National Transportation Safety Board, which hears appeals of Federal Aviation Administration enforcement actions, ruled that small drones are a type of aircraft and fall under existing FAA rules.
The FAA had fined Raphael Pirker, an aerial photographer, $10,000 for operating his Ritewing Zephyr in a reckless manner on the University of Virginia campus in 2011. Pirker allegedly flew the drone, which weighed less than five pounds, at “extremely low” altitudes, including under a pedestrian bridge and directly at a person, causing the individual to duck out of the way. China fights negativity on social media A Beijing court on Tuesday convicted an Internet marketer of illegal business practices and sentenced him to four years in prison for posting false information and deleting posts critical of his clients, in a case that state media have used to praise a government crackdown on online expression. Chaoyang District People’s Court also fined Yang Xiuyu, manager of online marketing company Beijing Erma, 150,000 yuan ($24,000 US). The court said Erma made more than 530,000 yuan
($86,000) by posting false information and deleting critical posts between 2008 and 2013, and 220,000 yuan ($36,000) by deleting negative information for others between May 2012 and 2013. The unidentified clients included a pharmaceutical company, a construction company and a travel agency. It is not uncommon in China for companies to pay others to generate online publicity for them, help promote their reputations or damage those of their competitors. Yang was arrested last year
soon after authorities launched an intensified campaign to clean up rumours, negativity and unruliness on social media — a platform for Chinese to express themselves to a large audience in a country where all traditional media are statecontrolled. While critics say the campaign has suppressed criticism of the government and ruling Communist Party, commentaries in state media have leapt on the case to argue that a cleanup of “unbecoming behaviour” is needed. If your favourite bottle of Mediterranean olive oil starts costing more, blame unseasonable European weather — and tiny insects. Italy’s 2014 olive harvest was declared by both producers and experts as the worst in history, due to adverse climatic conditions which helped the olive fly proliferate, thus destroying the olives before they could be harvested. HIGH TIME FOR AN UPDATE? Sex ed. We all suffered through it. But is the program that was taught in schools a decade ago still relevant to kids today? With high-profile sex assault cases in the news, some educators and activists are renewing their call for schools to go beyond the basics and tackle issues of sexual violence, stopping it before it starts. But not everyone is on board with these ideas. Metro’s Jessica Smith Cross spoke with people on both sides of the debate. For For
Against
Against
Overhaul urgently needed What is missing from the current sex-ed curriculum? In Ontario schools, according to some, it’s discourse on sexual violence. Chris Markham is the executive director of the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association, which is asking for sex-ed instructors to talk to kids about sexual consent. According to Markham, the acceptable standard for consent has evolved in recent years: It is no longer about the absence of a “no,” but the presence of an active, enthusiastic “Hell yes.” Markham said that the idea of consent should be taught “as soon as possible,” in an age-appropriate way. “In Grade 1, part of the reason kids are taught the proper body part names is to help prevent future abuse,” he said. “(They’re taught) if someone is doing something that isn’t comfortable to you, you need to speak to an adult and use the proper terminology when explaining that. That is the beginning of consent.” What students should be taught about consent ought evolve as they mature. It should focus on teaching kids how to make healthy decisions that respect their bodies and feelings, and those of others, Markham said. For example, he noted that the 2010 curriculum states that in Grade 7, students should learn about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and about engaging in sexual activity only when both partners consent. Coming at the debate from a different perspective is Mia Biondi, co-ordinator of the PROS (Providing Resources, Offering Support) program at All Saints Community CentreChurch in Toronto. She argues the curriculum revamp is an opportunity to educate students about human trafficking and the sex trade. The idea is to teach students how to recognize a pimp or recruiter, because those who prey on young people typically present themselves as a friend, she said. That would include teaching students lessons like, “Just because someone is giving gifts or attention, it doesn’t mean they’re doing it from a good place,” Biondi said. The human trafficking curriculum should be for Grade 7 students, and done in a sensitive, age-appropriate way, said Biondi.
Sex-ed curriculum goes too far already Some people were vocally opposed to a proposal to modernize Ontario curriculum in 2010, and they continue to be so today. Nancy Winslow, a mother and grandmother from Beamsville, Ont., said she believes parents, not teachers, should teach kids about sex. She said the curriculum is not age-appropriate, nor appropriate in any way. Winslow said students should not be taught sexual consent. Too much, too soon?
“Children are being exposed to far more than their psyches can handle.” Nancy Winslow, mother, grandmother
Attempted overhaul
The Ontario government has pledged to consult with parents on updates to sex-ed curriculum and implement a new program in September 2015. The last attempt in 2010 to update the decade-old curriculum was halted due to opposition from some parents and religious groups. • Among the proposals was teaching third-graders about same-sex marriage, sixth-graders about masturbation, and seventh-graders about oral sex and STIs. • Ontario’s sex-ed program hasn’t been changed since 1998, before the widespread use of cellphones and social media among kids.
Curriculum around Canada
Most parents in Canada can opt their children out of in-class sex ed classes, but they have to teach the material at home. Here’s a condensed look at how kids are taught about sex across the country: •
BRITISH COLUMBIA. Secondgraders learn about inappropriate touching, and sixth-graders about safety strategies for the Internet. • ALBERTA. Ninth-graders learn coping strategies when experiencing different rates of physical and sexual development.
• SASKATCHEWAN. Third-graders discuss same-sex families and how to deal with media stereotypes. • MANITOBA. Seventh-graders learn to identify symptoms and methods of transmission of STIs and HIV/AIDS, and discuss STI prevention.
“I don’t think sex needs to be discussed at school, certainly not in the young grades. Children are being exposed to far more than their psyches can handle. It takes away their innocence and it takes away their childhood,” she said. Winslow said she believes education about human trafficking should be reserved for high school students, who would be ready to learn about it. “Schools should be teaching self-respect, self-discipline and respect for others,” she said. Progressive Conservative MPP Monte McNaughton asked Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne pointed questions in the legislature Tuesday about the government’s plan to consult parents on the sex-ed curriculum, and accused the government of breaking its promise to meaningfully consult with parents on what they want their children to learn about sex. “One carefully selected hand-picked parent per school represents 4,000 parents out of millions of Ontario parents. That’s barely one per cent of parents,” he said. He called the process “covert,” “a farce,” “smoke and mirrors,” and an insult to parents. “When will you reveal the contents of the new Liberal sex education curriculum so all parents in the province can see for themselves what you have planned for their children?” McNaughton said the premier was “afraid” to tell parents what the curriculum will include.

Joey McIntyre happy to help turn CBS into an old boy-band network
SCENE
Television. Sitcom star is second New Kids on the Block member to join prime-time lineup NED EHRBAR
Metro in Hollywood
With Joey McIntyre on The McCarthys and Donnie Wahlberg holding down the fort on Blue Bloods, CBS is now at 20-per-cent New Kids on the Block saturation. And it’s a strategy that appears to be working. “We’re on different nights, so that’s good. We can get one more half-hour out of (the fans),” McIntyre jokes. Seriously, though, those Blockheads — fans of the grown-up boy band — are showing their support. “They’re very excited about the show. I think of course they’re going to be inclined to like something that I’m on or one of us is on, but they’re a good audience, they’re a smart audience,” he says. “We always have a good 25 or 30 of them at the taping.” McIntyre stars as one of the titular McCarthys, a loud and boisterous Boston family that includes twins Gerard (McIntyre) and Sean (Jimmy Dunn) along with little brother Ronny (Tyler Ritter) and sister Jackie (Kelen Coleman), all under the leadership of parents Arthur (Jack McGee) and Marjorie (Laurie Metcalf). This isn’t the first time McIntyre has put his Boston roots to work for an acting gig. McIntyre popped up as one of Melissa McCarthy’s

brothers in last year’s The Heat, though he insists the two families are very different — despite the accent. “There is a certain aspect to it, a certain niche that Boston brings — an Irish Boston kind of chip on your shoulder, working class mentality, very opinionated,” he says. “There’s a certain thing that I think Boston people have, a point of view. And certainly that was the kickoff of where the McCarthys came from. That family in the Heat is sim-
ilar, but without the F-word. I mean, the McCarthys would be very, very insulted if you compared us to that family. We think we’re much better than that.” If there’s any downside to his career as a New Kid, it’s that the terrible timing when it comes to the average age of his fans means he’s never really gotten to really indulge in groupie culture. “Back then they were young girls, teenagers, going crazy and figuring all sorts of stuff out,” he explains. “Back then they were too young and now they’re all beautiful women — and I’m married and happy. Couldn’t enjoy you then, and can’t enjoy you now.”
Music
A New Kid’s take on boy band revival So what does Joey McIntyre think of the popularity of One Direction — and the current boy-band resurgence? Let’s face it, given the success New Kids on the Block has found on the touring and cruise ship circuit, he can’t be that mad. And he’s not. “It comes in cycles, you know what I mean? You
talk about The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds, then New Kids and then Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. And then we take a break,” McIntyre says. “But One Direction doesn’t come around every day, you know what I mean? And that’s just a massive thing. I’m happy for them. Seems like they’re making good pop music and they’re good guys. I think they should dance a little bit more, but other than that, they seem like good guys.” NED EHRBAR/METRO IN HOLLYWOOD
Television. WE offers viewers ‘swag bags’ to watch now

The WE television network is offering prizes to people who watch, as long as they watch promptly. The network said it is starting an experiment this week where people who prove they watched its Thursday night episode of Tamar & Vince either live or within three days will be eligible to win a bag of show memorabilia and, ultimately, a home entertainment system. The incentive, believed to be the first in the TV industry, indicates the value of timely viewing. Advertising rates are
based on watching programs either live or within three days on digital video recorders or on demand services. Marc Juris, WE TV president, also wants people to watch live to encourage social media conversations around the network’s programming. WE is heavy on reality programming like Kendra on Top and Braxton Family Values. “We wanted to create a level of urgency to watch the shows,” Juris said. The network will flash a code word during a com-

mercial break on Tamar & Vince. Viewers who enter the word on the network’s website within three days will be eligible for one of 10 “swag bags” given out each week and for the home theatre grand prize.
If the experiment is deemed successful, it may spread to other programs, he said. WE is averaging 696,000 live viewers for original prime-time programming this year, an average that increases to 943,000 if viewing within three days is added. Stretch it out for a full week, and another five per cent usually joins in, according to the Nielsen company. Under Juris, WE — which stood for Women’s Entertainment — is trying to broaden its outlook. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Starbucks stop here for Neil Young Neil Young, rock’s resident cranky uncle, is boycotting Starbucks over a lawsuit challenging Vermont’s new genetically modified food labelling law. “I used to line up and get my latte every day, but yesterday was my last one,” Young writes on his website. “If we can generate enough attention, we can push Starbucks to withdraw its support for the lawsuit and then pressure other companies to do the same.”
A spokesman for Starbucks, however, claims Young is off-base. “The petition claiming that Starbucks is part of this litigation is completely false and we have asked the petitioners to correct their description of our position,” a company statement reads. Is it weird that I lost a little respect for Young when he admitted he drank lattes from Starbucks everyday? I mean, that just doesn’t sit right.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are apparently ridiculously indulgent parents, and the Times is on it! Their teenage offspring, Jaden and Willow Smith, sat down with the New York Times’ T Magazine to talk about their music, creativity in general, energies, philosophy — really, all sorts of things that reinforce why giving teens a platform to pontificate is a bad idea. But it’s too late, because they were given the platform. So let’s all take a moment to bask in the pretension: On creativity Jaden: “Honestly, we’re just trying to make music that we think is cool. We don’t think a lot of the music out there is that cool. So we make our own music. We don’t have any song that we like to listen to on the P.C.H. by any other artist, you know?” Willow: “That’s what I do with novels. There’re no novels that I like to read so I write my own novels, and then I read them again, and it’s the best thing.” On time and relativity Jaden: “It’s proven that how time moves for you depends
on where you are in the universe. It’s relative to beings and other places. But on the level of being here on Earth, if you are aware in a moment, one second can last a year.” Willow: “I mean, time for me, I can make it go slow or fast, however I please, and that’s how I know it doesn’t exist.” On education Jaden: “Kids who go to normal school are so teenagery, so angsty ... You never learn anything in school. Think about how many car accidents happen every day. Driver’s ed? What’s up? I still haven’t been to driver’s ed because if everybody I know has been in an accident, I can’t see how driver’s ed is really helping them out.” Willow: “I went to school for one year. It was the best experience, but the worst experience. The best experience because I was, like, ‘Oh, now I know why kids are so depressed.’ But it was the worst experience because I was depressed.” On life goals Jaden: “I have a goal to be just the most craziest person of all time. And when I say craziest, I mean, like, I want to do like Olympic-level things. I want to be the most durable person on the planet.” Willow: “I think by the time we’re 30 or 20, we’re going to be climbing as many mountains as we can possibly climb.”
Of course, Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t the only young Internet-friendly British actor ready to tie the knot. The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne, in fact, will be a married man before the year is out. “It’s coming up fast, before Christmas,” he tells me of his impending
nuptials with fiancée Hannah Bagshawe. Of course, he’s been a bit busy, what with the ongoing Awards Season campaign for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking. “It’s been a lot of me on FaceTime going, ‘Yes, whatever you want, that looks nice,’” he admits.
TV Land leaves Hot in Cleveland out in the cold Sorry, Betty White fans. TV Land has officially given the axe to its first original series, Hot in Cleveland, which just started its sixth season. Seriously, did you know it had been running for six seasons? Weird. Anyway, the show’s stars were understandably bummed about the news. Valerie Bertinelli, for example, posted this quote by Shel Silverstein: “There are no happy endings. Endings are the saddest part. So just give me a happy middle and a very happy start.” As of press time, Betty White hadn’t tweeted since

Even Paris wants a Brooklyn For more than a century, cities around the world have compared themselves to Paris. Many claim to be the Paris of the East: Bucharest, Prague, Istanbul, Beirut and Shanghai to name a few. There’s also the Paris of North America (Montreal), the Paris of South America (Buenos Aires) and the Paris of the Plains — Kansas City in the Jazz Age. But now the wannabe city is Brooklyn. Every neighbourhood with a critical mass of bearded hipsters, bike shops and vegan cafes calls itself “the new Brooklyn.” Ballard is the Brooklyn of Seattle. Glasgow and Melbourne both claim Brooklyn cool. And Oakland, Calif., has been called the Brooklyn of San Francisco so many times that Julia Cosgrove, editor of AFAR travel magazine, says she “can’t bear to read another story about it.” There’s even a Brooklyn of Paris: the once-gritty suburb of Pantin. Its derelict, graffiti-covered warehouses have been taken over by galleries and artists, turning it into the hippest place in the City of Light. Just like in Brooklyn, real estate prices have shot up, and old industrial buildings now house

luxury lofts. “It may have a way to go before it’s on a par with Brooklyn, but I expect it will continue to develop, considering how much investment and risk-taking is going on there — alongside the natural flux of artists toward the area,” said artist Oliver Beer, who works both with a gallery in Pantin and with the Museum of Modern Art’s contemporary arts outpost, PS1, in New York City. Other signs of what’s called the “Brooklynization of Paris” include gluten-free
restaurants and juice bars popping up. “It used to be when young chefs studied under the great chefs, they wanted to open important restaurants or go to the countryside and get their Michelin star. “Now they’re rejecting that model, they’re saying, ‘I’m going to do more backto-the-roots, farm-to-table cooking in a small restaurant with a few tables,’” said Katherine Johnstone, a spokeswoman for Atout France USA, the French tourism agency in New
York, describing a shift that some observers compare to Brooklyn’s culinary scene. On Oct. 10, The Atlantic published a list of places The New York Times has compared to Brooklyn with headlines like Brooklyn in Beijing and Brooklyn on the Hudson. Undaunted, a Nov. 6 Times headline read: A Touch of Brooklyn in Ridgewood, Queens. And if Queens is the new Brooklyn, there’s already a name for that, too: Quooklyn.
Brooklyn’s boom
Brooklyn’s emergence as a global symbol of all things trendy marks quite a turnaround for a place once mocked as Manhattan’s less sophisticated neighbour. “We’ve become the epicentre of cool as cool is now defined,” says Marty Markowitz, 69, who was born and raised in Brooklyn in an era when it was better known for ethnic enclaves, working class culture and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

When a vacation is all you never wanted Career. Basking in the sun for a short while doesn’t necessarily lead to relaxation Need a vacation to recover from that vacation? You’re not alone, say experts from the University of Ottawa. Typical vacations do not decrease long-term workrelated stress levels, according to Jane O’Reilly, a human resources professor. In other words, an employee goes away, stress goes down. He comes back, stress goes up. What’s more, if vacation experiences are “resourceconsuming,” they can leave someone even feeling more drained than before, said another human resources professor, Laurent Lapierre. Experts say that with a little planning, though, these

pitfalls can be avoided. Here are ways to get more rest, have more fun, and avoid wasting that precious summer reprieve. Pitfalls of being productive When people experience work-related stress during a vacation, it can be because they are “output-oriented” individuals, according to
management professor Michael Miles. “They worry about getting this done and getting that done,” he said. Some people just need to recognize that this need to be productive is an aspect of their personality, he said. “The one thing that I found for myself — I fall into that category — is that I make goals for my vacation itself. So for example, one of my goals for this vacation is to clean out my garage, which sounds really crazy, but it’s really relaxing. It’s enjoyable because it’s a goal and I can check it off and feel like I’ve achieved something.” Working on personal projects and checking items off a “bucket list” can both be fulfilling alternatives to work, according to O’Reilly. the canadian press

Leaving an audience in awe is not the easiest thing to accomplish. Practice matters, and as you gradually get the hang of managing different audiences, you will soon begin to realize that it gets easier over time. Before you know it, you’ll be able to present on just about anything with ease, and with minimal butterflies in your tummy. Here are some tips that are key to any professional presentation. Practice Practice really does make perfect, so go over your presentation as much as possible. With lots of practice, the content of your presentation will become second nature and you won’t require cue cards or notes. Want feedback? Rehearse in front of friends, family or co-workers so you can see how you do under (a little) pressure. Not ready for that? Try a mirror. Tip: Keep in mind that there may be interruptions or questions throughout your presentation. This is why you need to be comfortable with your material — don’t treat it like a recitation. Keep it straight and to the point Present your information in a
Use more visuals
Don’t fill a presentation with text-heavy slides. Convey your message using photos and a few keywords for structure — leave the rest to your delivery. • Nobody engages with a presentation slide full of words (and it’s not very visually appealing, either). • Presenters often use too much text when they aren’t confident in the presentation they are giving and need the slides as speaking references. This is where practising will help. Tip: Sustain the flow of your presentation by embedding videos directly in each slide. Having to exit the presentation for any reason puts you at risk of losing momentum.
clear and concise way. It is easy to lose someone’s attention if you take too long to get to the key points across. Ask yourself: What are the key pieces of information you need to communicate? Is there anything unnecessary you can omit? Timing your presentation can help you identify areas that are over-long or too short — these sections may be due for a review. Tip: Deliver your presentation to someone who knows little about your subject matter. How do they react? Consider personal presentation Your appearance and body language is crucial. Keep your arms from crossing in front of you, don’t fidget, and move through your space while presenting (walking across the stage, for example). These small details can help keep the audience engaged, and make your presentation more than a static talking head behind a podium with cue cards.
Tip: Make sure to pay attention to how you dress. Proper attire makes a great impression and can boost your self-confidence. Create a call to action A good presentation includes a clear next step for your audience. This is usually a type of action (connecting, engaging, purchasing), or at least underscores the identity of the person or organization who organized the presentation. It’s a good strategy to have a handout or takeaway item like a brochure, document of quick tips or even just a business card. This item will underscore your presentation and promote the call to action you’ve developed. Tip: Make your leave-behinds visually appealing and in line with the branding of your presentation. This item is going to need to support a strong connection. TalentEgg.ca is Canada’s leading job site and online career resource for college and university students and recent graduates.

Meat: The Greek version of Moussaka is like lasagna without the pasta sheets. Layers of thinly-sliced aubergine and potato are stacked like a cake with a filling of juicy, well-spiced minced meat. Enjoy the slight heat from the rouille in each spoonful with some crusty baguette. Rouille is an oil base sauce usually served in France on top of fish soups to give a wonderful kick of flavour and creaminess to the broth.

1. Rouille: Combine bread crumbs, peppers, garlic, cayenne and mayonnaise in blender and buzz until coarse. Drizzle in oil and blend until smooth; set aside. 2. Bouillabaisse: Heat oil over medium heat and cook shallots and fennel, stirring often for about 10 minutes or until softened. Stir in broth, tomatoes, thyme, bay leaves and saffron; bring to the boil. Boil gently for 10 minutes. 3. Add potatoes, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add mussels, crab legs, clams and monkfish; stir gently to combine into broth. Cover and cook for about 8 minutes or until mussels and clams are open and monkfish is firm. 4. Ladle into shallow soup bowls and dollop each with a spoonful of rouille.

Carly Jackson is readying for the biggest, hardest shot she’s faced so far in her hockey career. The 17-year-old goaltending standout from Amherst is close to making the cut for the Canadian women’s national under18 team, which will attempt to defend its world Carly Jackson championHOCKEY CANADA IMAGES ship title in the new year. She’s one of just three netminders invited to the team’s final selection camp, taking place Dec. 10-14 in Hamilton. Two of those goalies, and 23 of 28 players, will go on to represent their country at the U18 women’s world championship, set for Jan. 5-12 in Buffalo, N.Y. “I’ve been working a lot on energy systems, development off the ice, in the gym ... and just explosiveness, which will hopefully translate to on-ice results,” Jackson said Tuesday of her determination to prove herself worthy of wearing the Team Canada jersey. “On the ice, I’ve been working on ... positioning, having quick feet (and) always being set and ready for the shot.” Jackson has sported the

She made 21 saves in a 5-2 loss to the United States in the second of three games at Hockey Canada’s home arena in Calgary. Canada fell 2-1 in the summer series, but the steadfast five-foot-five, 146-pound netminder seems undeterred. Jackson has faced plenty of tough competition, from finishing sixth with Team Atlan-

Elite experiences such as those could give Jackson the edge in making the Canadian contingent, Hockey Nova Scotia development manager Brad Taylor said Tuesday. “The thing with Carly is her composure, and work ethic, and she’s very patient, and not rushing into getting that opportunity,” he said. “She’s a great young lady and certainly knows the game.” That resume has also earned Jackson a spot on Team Nova Scotia for the 2015 Canada Winter Games, running
Feb. 13-20 in Prince George, B.C. Hockey Nova Scotia announced the 20 female players representing the province at the games, held every four years, earlier this month. “It’s a big feather in our cap,” Taylor, also director of operations for Team Nova Scotia, said of having a national team contender such as Jackson on the provincial squad. By the time the Canada Winter Games come, she could already have a world championship gold medal added to her hardware collection. But she’s taking it one step, one puck at a time. “I’m just going to keep training; keeping working hard,” Jackson said. “So that when I’m there, I can just focus on hockey.”
Fucale makes 40 saves in Super Series win Halifax Mooseheads starting netminder Zachary Fucale got the call and answered it Tuesday night, stopping 40 shots to lead Team QMJHL to a 3-1 win over Team Russia in Game 5 of the annual Subway Super Series. Fucale was named first star of the night for his efforts between the posts, and earning the win with some highlight reel-worthy saves in front of
3,027 fans at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst, N.B. The lone goal against 19-year-old Fucale of Rosemère, Que., came at 14:08 in the second period, when Russian defenceman Dmitry Yudin put the puck past the goal-line on a nice pass from right-winger Vyacheslav Leshchenko. Francis Perron of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Dan-
iel Audette of the Sherbrooke Phoenix and Anthony Richard of the Val-d’Or Foreurs all scored for Team QMJHL. The victory keeps Russia’s national junior team ahead of the Canadian Hockey League contingents 3-2 in the series, with Fucale and Team QMJHL able to end it in a draw if they win again Thursday night in Rimouski, Que. The Western Hockey
League squad fell 3-2 both Nov. 10 and Nov. 11, while the Ontario Hockey League team split its two games, getting blanked 4-0 on Nov. 13 winning 5-1 on Nov. 17. Fucale has played in the Subway Super Series for three straight seasons. The puck drops in the final game of this year’s event at 8 p.m. Thursday on Sportsnet and TVA Sport. KRISTEN LIPSCOMBE/METRO

NFL. Peterson banned till at least April 2015 Adrian Peterson’s future with the Minnesota Vikings dimmed further Tuesday, with the NFL suspending the star running back without pay for at least the rest of the season. As his representatives initiated an appeal, Peterson remained at the centre of an escalating dispute between the league and the NFL Players Association over the player discipline process. Commissioner Roger Goodell told Peterson he will not be considered for reinstatement before April 15 for his violation of the NFL personal conduct policy — the first example of a crackdown on players involved with domestic violence. The NFLPA quickly announced it would immediately appeal, calling for a neutral arbitrator to handle it, and sharply rebuked the league for what it labelled as inconsistency and unfairness in determining the discipline. of key saves early on, is 8-1-0 in his last nine starts dating back to Oct. 25. The Sorel, Que., native has a .944 save percentage over that period. The Canadiens, looking for the club’s first sevengame winning streak since 2006, started off strong. Montreal came close to opening the score twice in the game’s first 90 seconds, but Max Pacioretty opted not to shoot on a partial breakaway just seconds in, and Fleury stopped Jiri Sekac going hard to the net a minute later. Not beating Fleury right off the bat proved costly for
Montreal, as Bennett gave the Pens a 1-0 lead at 7:46 of the first period. The 22-yearold intercepted a pass by defenceman Nathan Beaulieu in his own zone, and shot one past Price for his first of the season. Two minutes later, Downie doubled Pittsburgh’s lead. Kris Letang faked a shot, and passed the puck off to Downie at the side of the net leaving Price with no chance. Jonathan Bernier lasted all of 20 minutes while Pekka Rinne continued his early-season dominance as the Nashville Predators hammered the Toronto Maple Leafs 9-2 at the Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. The Maple Leafs goaltender, who had allowed only three goals in his previous two starts, gave up that many in the first period alone — two
of them to Taylor Beck — before he was relieved by James Reimer to start the second. That didn’t seem to matter much, however, as the Predators added one in the second period and four in the final 20 minutes, handing the Leafs their third straight loss. Filip Forsberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Roman Josi, Eric Nystrom, Mike Ribeiro, Derek
Roy and Colin Wilson all had goals for Nashville (11-4-2). Mike Santorelli and Nazem Kadri scored in the third period for Toronto (9-7-2), but the Leafs were already trailing 8-0 at that point. 2015 Buick Enclave
• Type. Four-door, 7- or 8-passenger full-size SUV
• Engines. 3.6-litre V6 with direct injection (288 hp)
• Transmissions. Six-speed automatic
These full-sized peoplemovers make up a small segment of the market, but they’re popular with drivers who need extra seats but don’t want a minivan. Although it shares its engine and platform with other GM models, there’s enough of a difference in its appointments to give it the unique look and feel that Buick buyers want.
Points
• The three rows of seating can make this a viable alternative to a minivan for many families. • The priciest of the three vehicles built off this platform, it also offers the most luxury features. • The available all-wheeldrive automatically distributes power to improve traction in slippery conditions.
Interesting features
Heated steering wheel, rear park assist, tri-zone automatic climate control, remote starter, and available power-folding mirrors, heated and cooled seats, lane-departure warning and forwardcollision alert. The third row of seats is both easy to access and comfortable.

No one was quite sure what would happen when Buick entered the SUV market with its all-new Enclave in 2008, but it turned out to be a bestseller for the company, which now also offers a compact sport-ute called the Encore. The Enclave, based on a model that’s also sold as the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia, has undergone several refinements since that
first model. The 2015 version is mostly unchanged from 2014, with just the new availability of a heated wood-andleather steering wheel. In front-wheel drive, it comes in a single trim level starting at $47,760. I drove it in the all-wheel-drive configuration, which starts at $50,760. My Premium tester started at $55,260 and had a few added options, including a twinpane sunroof and a trailer tow package, which includes heavy-duty cooling and raises the Enclave’s towing ability from 2,000 to 4,500 lb. Power comes from a smooth-running 3.6-litre V6, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The ride is composed and luxurious, and the Enclave

handles well without feeling heavy. What really impresses is its surprisingly tight turning circle: I’ve driven small sedans that can’t turn around as easily as this big ute does. That’s a real bonus when
you’re trying to park it in tight quarters. The Enclave includes three rows of seats and, unlike some of its competitors, it’s not only easy to get into the third row, but there’s also good legroom back there and
the seats are comfortable. Both the second and third rows fold flat to provide more cargo space. If there’s a downside to this vehicle, it’s the interior. Although it looks spectacular at first glance, with doublestitched accents and wood trim, there’s far too much hard, pebbly plastic in the lower portions of the dash and doors — making it seem much cheaper. My power-operated liftgate was also a little creakier than I expected. Beyond those complaints, though, the Enclave is a wellequipped, comfortable, and powerful way to get a lot of passengers wherever they need to go.

BOLD, DYNAMIC CAMRY CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
A bestseller now becomes even better with the redesigned 2015 Toyota Camry. Starting with the reliability and fuel efficiency already built into every Camry, Toyota has redesigned the 2015 Camry to create a car that is premium in looks and feel, but is still value-packed for Canadian buyers. The Camry was redesigned from the ground up. It’s now unmistakable from any angle, with a slightly longer body and a wider track that improves the car’s stability and gives it a dynamic, athletic stance. A sporty new XSE trim line joins the LE, XLE and SE, giving buyers even more choice in the extremely competitive midsize sedan segment. The Camry’s aggressive new front includes a wider, more prominent trapezoid grille that further punctuates the car’s low, lean look, flanked by sharp slashes that incorporate the LED running lights. The new XSE goes a step further with its unique mesh grille and fascia, announcing its sportier suspension and driving characteristics. On all models, the grille arches back to the sleek new lights. At the rear, wraparound tail
lamps sweep into an attractive garnish below the trunk lid’s integrated lip spoiler. But the Camry’s beauty isn’t just skin deep. The chassis and body structure have additional spot welds for enhanced rigidity, which improves ride quality and cornering ability. The retuned suspension makes the new Camry far more responsive, but while it responds quicker to steering input, it never becomes a chore to drive. This improved steering
feel inspires confidence and makes the Camry a true driver’s car. The XSE’s suspension includes sportier shock absorbers and firmer bushings, higher-rate coil springs, and unique steering tuning that make it a standout, along with its trim-specific 18-inch wheels, heated sport seats, premium navigation system, and satellite radio. The Camry lineup offers a choice of two engines. The 2.4-litre four-cylinder generates
TOYOTA CAMRY
178 horsepower and does a great job of getting the Camry quickly up to highway speeds, while it’s smooth and efficient on the daily commute. For those who want even more, there’s an available 3.5-litre V6 in the XLE and XSE that delivers 268 horsepower. Both engines mate to a smoothly-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. The Camry is new inside as well, with new levels of refinement, roomier feel, premium materials, more soft-touch surfaces, and the quietest cabin yet. Seat materials range from premium cloth to genuine leather and Ultrasuede, with seats and door panels accented with high-contrast stitching. On the SE, XLE and XSE models, the instrument cluster features a new 4.2-inch TFT (thin film transistor) colour screen that co-ordinates with the multimedia system to display audio and navigation information, communication, and vehicle warnings without being a distraction to the driver. The screen is nestled between three-dimensional Optitron gauges that not only look high-tech, but are easy to read. The reconfigured centre console offers increased capacity and a convenient power source inside the storage box. On the centre stack, a new covered bin opens with a touch and includes an available wireless charging system for select smartphones. As always, safety is a priority, and the Camry now has improved brake feel, along with 10 standard airbags including driver and passenger knee airbags, enhanced stability control, brake assist, and Smart Stop Technology. All in all, the new 2015 Camry offers a better driving experience, more premium features, unmistakable sleek styling, and advanced technology features, while still maintaining Toyota’s legendary commitment to safety and value.
HYBRID IS FUN AND EFFICIENT The company that introduced the hybrid certainly knows a thing or two about making it better. Along with its gas engine Camry sibling, the Camry Hybrid is also new for 2015, with sleek new styling, premium interior and features, and new suspension and chassis tuning for improved and athletic driving dynamics that you might not expect from a gasoline-electric vehicle. The sporty new Camry Hybrid SE has been added to the lineup to give hybrid buyers even more choice in trim levels. Toyota’s engineers enhanced the front suspension’s stabilizer bar and control arm bushings for a sharper steering feel and improved ride
quality, while the stability control system is retuned for smoother intervention and more natural feel. Of course they did — it’s a natural fit for an engine and electric motor combination that delivers 200 horsepower. The aggressive new styling features a trapezoid mesh grille, strong upward-swept body line, sleek headlamps, and wraparound tail lamps. Inside, the Camry Hybrid includes premium seating material, roomier feel, and high-tech connectivity features such as available wireless charging for select smartphones. With available sport suspension, the 2015 Camry Hybrid is as much about fun as it is about efficiency.

Thanks Norway, for making us look bad Autopilot. Nordic nation leads the world in per-capita wealth, energy efficiency and, now, EV ownership Auto pilot
Mike Goetz drive@metronews.ca
Norway is starting to get on my nerves. The list of things it’s good at is getting too long. I wouldn’t mind so much if the list was contained to Nordic things, such as ski jumping, cross-country skiing, and eating the most lingonberries per capita. But, no, the things Norway is good at — worldtopping even — are both significant and universal. A few examples: How about the most sovereign wealth per capita? Sure, Norway has oil, but so do a lot of other countries,
including Canada. By the end of 2020, Norway officials expect its Government Pension Fund Global to be worth the equivalent of $1.1 trillion US in today’s money. How about the world’s best school system? This is obviously a subjective rating, but many experts make a case that Norway’s school system, based on the mantra, “One School for All, is the best in the world. It consistently ranks very high in every educational metric, and dovetails perfectly with the country’s vision of providing employment and a place for everyone. Norwegians are expected to “master the art of living together. Maybe a bit left-leaning for some North Americans, but it works for them. And how about the Syltelabb? This delicacy, a holiday favourite of the Norwegians, is to die for, especially if you have a thing, like they and I do, for boiled, salt-cured pig’s trotters. Norway is also the top-ranking country in the
Tax incentives and a publicly funded network of recharging stations drive EV use in Norway. Torstar news Service
World Economic Forum’s Global Energy Architectural Performance Index, which purports to measure how countries manage energy, through the metrics of economic growth, sustainability, and access. Norway does several things well in this regard, but one way it probably leads the world is
in burning garbage in a profitable and clean way. This was a headline in the U.K.’s Guardian newspaper earlier this year: Trash to cash: Norway leads the way in turning waste into energy. The article explains that U.K. cities are paying to send rubbish to Norway, and Norway is importing as much
rubbish as it can get, in an effort to generate more energy by burning waste in its vast and efficient incinerators. And now, I’ve just learned that Norway leads the world when it comes to electric vehicle adoption. Norway, that oil-rich, cold-climate nation, has more EVs per capita than any other country.
Roughly one in six cars sold in Norway is an EV, a very healthy 16 per cent share. By my reckoning, about one in 250 cars sold in Canada during 2013 was an EV, for a 0.004-per-cent share. (The share gets even more molecular when you lump in the 978,000 crossovers, SUVs and light trucks sold in 2013, many of which are used like cars.) Norway created a way for EVs to flourish, through high tax incentives and a comprehensive and publicly funded charging infrastructure. We don’t seem to have the same appetite to invest in EV adoption and infrastructure in Canada. But with Norway’s track record of success in everything from making succulent dishes with pig’s feet to making the best of anything energy-related, you wonder if maybe we should be following its EV lead more closely. We’re different countries with different characteristics, but there is no denying that Norway has the upper hand right now.

Porsche adds hybrid SUV to its stable of electric vehicles Detroit Electric close to production
Porsche has added a Cayenne hybrid tall wagon to its widening portfolio of electrified high-end vehicles for 2015 — joining the 918 Spyder super sports car and Panamera S E-Hybrid executive sedan. The Cayenne is the first premium plug-in hybrid SUV, the automaker says. Like the Panamera plug-in, the Cayenne S E-Hybrid packs a 333-horsepower 3.0-litre supercharged V6, supplemented by a 95-horsepower electric motor. The bigger-bodied Cayenne also gets a larger lithium-ion traction battery to feed that motor. With total system torque clocking in at 435 lb.-ft. between 1,250 and 4,000 r.p.m., it will sprint to 100 km/h in a reasonably quick 5.4 seconds. Detroit Electric has finalized the exterior design of its pure electric two-seat SP:01, as it gears up for production in Leamington Spa, England. The lightweight, low-volume sports car will be billed as the world’s fastest battery-electric car when it goes on sale in Asia, Europe and North America next year. The design has been subtly updated to improve the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance. The most striking element is a new fastback configuration, replacing the prototype’s high-edged “flying buttresses” on either side of the rear window. Cladding the battery pack in a protective composite casing has also improved torsional rigidity to better protect it from punctures in a collision.
Porsche says the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the world’s first premium electric-powered SUV.

said Bodil Eriksson of Volvo Cars North America. “We can now transport people into a 360-degree world, where they can explore and experience the next-generation luxury SUV, months before it’s in dealerships.” Volvo is working on an iOS version of the app and plans to offer a trilogy of test-drive themes.
