Save a horse, ride Calgary Transit. For the duration of the 2015 Calgary Stampede, locals and visitors alike will be given extra incentive to take the bus or CTrain to and from the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth — or anywhere else in the city — with new discounts on day passes. Calgary Transit plans to

offer daily adult passes for $6.50, down from the regular price of $9.50. Youth day passes will be $4.50, down from $6.75. This is the first time Calgary Transit is trying out the Stampede perk. “We just want everybody to enjoy getting around,” said spokesman Ron Collins. “We’re hoping to help people and families to get there a little easier.” Transit director Doug Morgan said Stampede is an incredibly busy time and, with parking and cabs in high demand, riding the rails and bus routes is an affordable way to get in on the fun. Passes are available from July 2 to 12 at transit’s customer service centre, the ticket vending machines at LRT stations, as well 7-Eleven, Mac’s and Safeway stores.

Concerns arose after a vandal hurriedly scrawled “there is a bomb insie ISIS is here ISIS is now.” — which, according to RCMP, is the actual spelling the vandal used — on the outside wall of Cochrane High School before smashing a window and trying to get inside the building. Acting Sgt. David Fakas said the initial investigation suggests the fiveyear-old boy was on his way home from school around 4 p.m. when he darted out from between parked cars in the 3300 block of Catalina Boulevard NE and was hit. The vehicle then left the scene, but was located a short time later and the driver was taken into custody. The child was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries, Fakas said. robson fletcher/metro

Tails wagging after city scraps breed-specific legislation Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary It’s one battle Chantelle Mackney has won, but she faces dozens more before fulfilling her dream of seeing breedspecific legislation (BSL) eliminated across the province — and eventually the country. Last week, Mackney celebrated what most would see as a small change: after nearly six months of advocacy, she convinced the City of Chestermere to strike BSL restrictions from its bylaws. “They’ve repealed all breedspecific legislation,” she said. “Pit bull-type dogs are going to be treated like every other dog.” The change means Mackney in now free to walk Mr. Magoo, her mixed-breed dog, freely in the city, without the restraint of a muzzle. Chestermere Mayor Patricia Matthews said the city wanted to turn from breed-specific legislation toward a more general behavioural bylaw for pets. Instead of targeting animals by breed, which Matthews

Smoke was also billowing from a home in the neighbourhood and police evacuated several homes. Const. Brendan Power sent out a Tweet pleading with residents in the area of 184 Street and 64 Avenue to move back, telling them they were “not safe to be observing anywhere near there.” Dozens of police cars and three ambulances were on scene. B.C. rule Pay-before-you-pump cutting on legislation urgent: Centex down gas theft Grant’s Law

Safety

Gas station calling for law after hit-andrun injury Anna Brooks

Metro | Calgary After a Centex employee was hit by a truck when she attempted to stop the driver from stealing gas, her employer is speaking out about the need for pay-beforeyou-pump legislation. “The government of Alberta has shown very little or no leadership in this matter in the past, even though they have been advised by various chiefs of police to adopt ‘Pay before Pump’ legislation,” Centex president Alnoor Bhura said in a statement. “We hope the new government reconsiders this issue and brings forward some much needed legislation and leadership,” he added. A co-worker at the gas station on 16 Avenue NW, who asked not to be named, said the injured woman had just started her new job with Centex. He added that gas and dashes happen fairly frequently and adopting new legislation similar to what’s known as “Grant’s Law” in British Columbia would prevent incidents like this from happening in the future. “It happens probably two times a month,” he said. “We just call the police when it happens, but it’s something the government needs to change.” The Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police pushed for paybefore-you-pump legislation

Danielle Boucher, a public affairs officer with the Ministry of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour, said such legislation may not be necessary considering businesses can establish their own rules when it comes to paying for fuel. “Companies are free to implement a system of having to pay for fuel before pumps are operational,” Boucher said. “A law is not required for that, and many gas stations have that in place now.” Insp. When Grant de Patie, a 24-yearold Esso employee, was dragged for more than seven kilometres to his death in 2005, British Columbia was galvanized. De Patie had latched on to the vehicle of a 16-year-old gasand-dash thief, trying to stop him from fleeing from a fuel tab that would barely buy a sixpack of beer. It took more than three years and intense public consultations, but “Grant’s Law” (which is not a law, but a regulation within the province’s workplace code) came into force in February 2008, said Scott McCoy with Worksafe B.C. The regulation requires customers to pay before a gasoline pump will flow, he said. Initially designed to protect workers from feeling their jobs are at risk due to employers who might demand — illegally — that losses from theft come out of the employee’s pocket, McCoy said the new regulation has also had unexpected effects. “It has virtually eliminated gas-and-dash robberies,” he said. And yet B.C. is the only Canadian jurisdiction with pay-before-pumping rules in place. In 2012, Mike Colle, the Liberal MPP for Toronto’s EglintonLawrence riding, introduced an unsuccessful private member’s bill to mirror the B.C. rule. The move came after Jayesh Prajapati, 44, was killed in Toronto while chasing a driver who’d stolen gas. Colle said Monday he’ll keep up his effort, especially in the wake of the injuries a Centex employee in Calgary suffered in a gas-and-dash incident on Sunday. “It’s kind of insane that we see a situation in Canada where one of the most dangerous jobs you can have is being a gas station attendant,” Colle said. tim querengesser/metro edmonton

Civic agency hires new CEO internally Robson Fletcher

Metro | Calgary Calgary Economic Development named a new CEO Monday as outgoing head Bruce Graham leaves the organization after 12 years at its helm. Mary Moran, who joined CED in 2010 as vice-president of marketing and communications, will now take over the top role of the arm’s-length civic agency.

Mary Moran, the new CEO of Calgary Economic Development. contributed

The decision to promote Moran was made after a fourmonth national search process, according to Steve Allan, chair of the CED board, who said she “stood out among the pool of candidates.” Moran “was the driver behind several key strategic initiatives,” Allan said in a statement, including the “Building on our Energy” update to CED’s 10-year economic strategy for Calgary as well as the award-winning

flood recovery campaign called YYCisOPEN. Mayor Naheed Nenshi described Moran as a “proven collaborator” who cares deeply about Calgary and its future. “It is important that the person leading Calgary Economic Development is as passionate about our city as they are about economic development,” Nenshi said in a release. Moran will take over from Graham as CEO at the end of June.

City drops good-deed transit ticket Fine

Rider busted for giving pass to man ‘down on his luck’ Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary Calgary transit rider Emily Jantz, who was slapped with a $250 ticket earlier this year for giving her monthly transit pass to a man she thought deserved a leg up, has now seen the charges dropped. As Metro reported in January, Jantz, a University of Calgary student, had what she thought were essentially two valid fares — her UPass and a monthly pass her fiancé had purchased for her by mistake. While on the way to renew her UPass for the semester, she met a man on transit she described as “down on his luck,” and decided to give him her monthly pass. A peace officer spotted the transaction and both she and the man were ticketed. Jantz was accused of violating section 10 of Calgary’s transit passenger bylaw: “Sell, exchange, give away or receive a transfer, validated ticket or pass” — subject to

a $250 fine. The man, meanwhile, was charged under section 9(a): “Board or use a light rail transit vehicle without valid pass.” Now, months later, Jantz received a letter in the mail and breathed a sigh of relief: The charge against her had been withdrawn. “It made me feel like a criminal,” Jantz said of the whole affair. The city was not able to provide comment by press time. Paul Ruggles with Ticketz Canada said it’s uncommon for the city to withdraw charges. With his clients, who normally come to him with traffic offences, he often speaks to the city’s lawyers and negotiates a fine reduction, if the offenders have relatively clean records. He added the city may have had to withdraw the charge because of a lack of evidence. Jantz said she holds no grudges. “For the most part, what I’ve seen of transit officers, they’re really lovely,” she said.

Cycling

Alberta will not pursue 1-metre law Cyclists in Alberta won’t see a law anytime soon similar to the one-metre rule approved in Ontario last week, say Alberta government officials. The Ontario law stipulates that motorists are to keep one metre away when passing a cyclist on the road, but local government spokespersons said it isn’t something that’s set to come into effect in Alberta the near future. “There isn’t anything like that on the books at this

time,” an Alberta transportation spokesperson told Metro. The Ontario law is part of a broader change to rules of the road. Bill 31 also includes harsher penalties for distracted drivers and for those entering a crosswalk before a pedestrian has left it. Drivers there can also face harsher penalties and be struck with demerit points should they open the door of a parked vehicle in front of a cyclist, causing a crash.

Five killed in motorcycle crashes Police say the SUV driver was on Highway 830 and had stopped at the junction, but collided with the bike after proceeding into the intersection. The male motorcyclist died at the scene, while his female passenger and the SUV driver suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital, where the passenger died. On Saturday evening, a 30-year-old woman died when she lost control of her motorcycle at a major interchange in Edmonton. The Canadian Press

One man killed in a crash near Strathmore, east of Calgary, and another near Lethbridge were among five people who died in separate motorcycle crashes across Alberta over the weekend. arrived on scene shortly after receiving a call at about 3 p.m. and were able to douse the fire without incident. Henke said the fire originated between the two partially built homes in the new community in the city’s deep southeast. No injuries were reported. metro

Metro | Edmonton Alberta Health Services is promising to give patients a stronger voice under a new model that will put them and their families at the centre. Vickie Kaminski, the CEO of AHS, announced the new “patient first strategy” at a Calgary news conference on Monday. She said the approach, which may seem obvious, involves patients in decision making and ensures they’re comfortable with everything that happens. “It represents a pretty significant step toward becoming the health care system that Albertans want and deserve,” she said. Kaminski said the practitioners in the system have the expertise and knowledge, but they might not understand how treatments will play out for each individual patient. She said families and patients need to feel comfortable expressing their concerns so that those issues are addressed. “We need to empower patients and families to be active members in their health-care teams,” she said. Kaminski said the new approach wouldn’t cost money and was about simple steps, like making sure staff have name tags so patients get to

know who is treating them. Deb Runnalls, co-chair of the committee that designed the new approach, said her own experience showed her what patient-centred care can really mean. When her own granddaughter was born with cerebral palsy the prognosis was very grim. She said a doctor sat with her daughter and went through all of the medical reports and results, but then stopped to ask her what else he should know about her daughter’s condition. She said the doctor’s simple act was transformative. “This is someone who my

little girl will trust with her daughter’s life until she becomes an adult,” said Runnalls. “He handed her hope back.” Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said the new approach recognizes people will react in a multitude of ways. “When you’re talking about working with human beings, we all have different ways that

we respond,” she said. She also said that the NDP would not decentralize the health-care system as the previous Conservative government had promised to do. “Every time you have a system change it creates more chaos and struggle,” she said. “I don’t think Albertans are begging us to do that.”

Man dies in wingsuit jump ACCIDENTS

Hubert called ‘Edmonton’s most prolific BASE jumper’ A wingsuit jumper who died making a jump off a mountain peak in the Rockies didn’t seem to have a care in the world as he prepared for what turned out to be his final outing with friends. “Sun is shining, institutionalized on Sirius, going wingsuiting,” Gabriel Hubert posted on Facebook on Saturday afternoon. “Thanks life.” Hubert, 40, has been identified by friends as the person who died Sunday morning as he and two companions jumped off Ha Ling Peak near Canmore wearing wingsuits. The outfits have fabric stitched between the arms and body that increases a

jumper’s surface area and allows a user to fly impressive horizontal distances at a slower descent rate. While his two companions landed safely, Hubert, who called the Edmonton area home, hit the trees without his parachute opening. He was pronounced dead at the scene. “The only thing we have an understanding of is that his parachute did not deploy,” RCMP Sgt. Ryan Currie said Monday. “I cannot say for certain if it was human error or an equipment malfunction.” Currie said the practice is not illegal and is quite common in the area, which is popular with thrill-seeking wingsuit jumpers. “A lot of people do hike the trail up the backside to reach the peak. A lot of people do use that area for BASE jumping with wingsuits and parachutes,” said Currie. “It’s common for people to use it, but

not common for us to have accidents of this sort.” Hubert’s Facebook page has many pictures of him in full skydiving gear in mountainous settings. There are also pictures of his elementaryschool-age children playing hockey. A Vice magazine profile from April called Hubert “Edmonton’s most prolific BASE jumper.” “We know we’re not normal. Normal people will look at what we do and say we’re stupid, but they don’t get to feel what we feel — the highs, that beautiful feeling of flying,” Hubert is quoted as saying in the article. A welder by trade, Hubert was featured in a June 2012 National Geographic video shot in Switzerland on wingsuit jumping. Last month, he boasted on Facebook about making his first wingsuit jump on home soil. THE CANADIAN PRESS

What is wingsuiting? While parachutists experimented with wings as early as the 1930s, commercial wingsuits weren’t developed until the late 1990s in Europe. Sometimes referred to as flying-squirrel suits or birdman suits, several companies now sell them for between $850 and $2,200. Speeds can exceed 160 km/h. Last month, two jumpers in Yosemite National Park were killed instantly when they attempted to zoom through a notch in a ridgeline and slammed into a rocky outcropping. Dean Potter, 43, and Graham Hunt, 29, were experienced at flying in wingsuits. Potter, who had been featured in a National Geographic documentary on wingsuits called Fly or Die, was considered one of the biggest inspirations of his generation in the climbing community. Hunt was one of the most prolific BASE jumpers in that part of California. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Piling on the pancakes food

Stampede, SAIT offer culinary tour of the world Lucie Edwardson

For Metro | Calgary

Whether you are from Korea, Canada or Venezuela, your culture is blessed with pancakes. On Monday, the Calgary Stampede teamed up with the SAIT culinary school to offer Calgarians a sample of what the pancake means in different places across the globe. “When we were doing research for the event, we realized every country in the world has one form of pancake or another, so that’s why we decided to go that route,” said chef Bruno Lesage, an instructor at the SAIT culinary school. The SAIT chefs-in-the-making and Stampede promo-

IN BRIEF Hiker dead after fall down embankment A hiker in her 30s has died from injuries in a fall near the Rocky Mountain town of Canmore. Emergency responders were dispatched to the Grotto Mountain day-use area on Monday afternoon. They received reports that a woman had fallen down an embankment. Given that access to the area on foot was marginal, Alpine Helicopter assisted paramedics by locating the hiker, retrieving her by a sling and ferrying her to a point where she could receive medical attention. The woman was declared deceased, however. An adult male hiking partner was uninjured and was assisted out of the area on foot by conservation officers.

Keith Jones lined up for some pancakes during his lunch break and said it was nice to see the Stampede adopting new traditions as the city changes. “Calgary is a very diverse place now. Being able to bring in a bunch of different foods from different cultures helps us to grow and helps people understand each other’s cultures,” Jones said. And that is exactly what the Calgary Stampede wants to do, said Maggie Schofield, the executive director of the Calgary Downtown Association. “The city has become so diverse over the last number of years, and the Stampede tries very hard to align with that, but you have to reach out to those communities. Better bail process focus of legislation

IN BRIEF Lobbying firm with ties to Tories looks left for advice A lobbying firm that had close ties to the former Alberta Progressive Conservatives political dynasty is going to left field for advice. The Canadian Strategy Group says it has hired former Canadian Labour Congress president Ken Georgetti and former British Columbia NDP party president Moe Sihota as “strategic counsel.”

The group’s co-founder, Hal Danchilla, says the two men will help the Edmonton-based company’s existing clients and deal with social organizations, the not-for-profit-sector, environmental groups and unions. “If you take a look at what Ken and Moe are bringing to the table, it is an area that we, frankly, are lacking in,” Danchilla said Monday. Code of conduct established Members of Parliament have finally come up with a process for dealing with sexual-harassment complaints between MPs. The code of conduct, proposed by the Commons committee on procedural and House affairs, comes months after Parliament Hill was rocked by complaints of sexual harassment levelled by two female New Democrat MPs against two Liberal colleagues. The code of conduct would go into effect in the next session of Parliament after the Oct. 19 election and it would apply only to

allegations of non-criminal sexual harassment between MPs. Any potentially criminal offences are to be referred to the police. As a first step, the chief human resources officer for the House of Commons or a party whip would be the first person to receive a complaint. Mediation would be offered at all stages in the process. Should mediation fail and a formal complaint be filed, the human resources officer would, with the consent of the complainant, initiate an investigation,

which could include retaining the services of an outside expert. In cases where a complaint is substantiated, or where the complaint is found to be frivolous and vexatious, the aggrieved party could demand further disciplinary action. If the pertinent party whip did not mete out discipline to the satisfaction of the complainant, the matter could then be referred to the procedure and House affairs committee and, if need be, the House of Commons itself. Montreal

Feds resist safe injection sites For Sandhia Vadlamudy, the answer is obvious: “To prevent overdoses, save lives and avoid the transmission of infections” in Montreal, a network of safe injection sites is necessary. But a political fight is brewing between Montreal and the federal government, as Montreal officials said last week they would move forward with a plan to establish three fixed injection sites and one mobile unit — with or without federal approval. “It’s a political battle ... that is not new,” said Vadlamudy, executive director of Cactus Montreal,

a community centre that works to prevent sexually-transmitted diseases, and distributes 600,000 clean needles every year. The city’s plan would add nurses to three community groups in the city’s south-east borough — CACTUS Montreal, Dopamine, Spectre de rue and l’Anonyme — to administer safe injections. It would also launch a mobile unit. These facilities allow addicts to inject illegal drugs with clean materials under the supervision of a nurse. The Quebec government sup-

ports the city’s plan, and will provide $2.6 million in annual funding. Montreal public health officials, meanwhile, submitted a request to Health Canada in May to receive an exemption to launch the service. That exemption is necessary under Section 56 of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. But the federal government is opposed to supervised drug-injection centres, saying they could pose a danger to communities and encourage drug use. G7 puts Harper on the spot Summit

Leaders agree to a no-carbon economy by the year 2100 Canada’s energy sector will have to transform itself to lower greenhouse gas emissions in the long term, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday. He was commenting at the end of the G7 leaders’ summit, which called on its members to put their energy sectors on a low-carbon footing by 2050, a move with serious implications for Canada’s greenhouse-gasemitting oilsands. German Chancellor Angela Merkel fell short of her goal of pushing her fellow leaders to a broad, iron-clad commitment to a low-carbon economy by 2050. Instead, the G7 agreed to a fullblown no-carbon economy, but not until 2100. “We commit to doing our part to achieve a low-carbon global economy in the longterm, including developing and deploying innovative technologies striving for a transforma-

tion of the energy sectors by 2050 and invite all countries to join us in this endeavour,” the leaders said. “To this end we also commit to develop long-term, national low-carbon strategies.” Asked what this means for Canada’s energy sector, Harper

said: “Nobody’s going to start to shut down their industries or turn off the lights. We simply got to find a way to create lower-carbon emitting sources of energy.” Harper took part in the G7 leaders’ shortened talks on climate change as the summit en-

tered its second and final day. “All leaders understand that to achieve these kinds of milestones over the decades to come will require serious technological transformation,” Harper said. The Canadian Press has been told by sources who saw the working draft of the G7’s cli-

mate-change communique that Canada and Japan worked behind the scenes to water down the statement. Harper’s spokesman Stephen Lecce said that was “false,” noting the G7 reached a consensus that Canada supported. Merkel placed the fight against climate change at the heart of her sweeping agenda. She wanted the G7 summit to give France momentum when it hosts the United Nations climate change conference this December, which aims to reach a breakthrough agreement in the fight to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Merkel had been pushing the G7 to endorse a pledge to reach zero carbon emissions, but Canada and Japan were holdouts. “Canada and Japan are the most concerned about this one,” said one source who was privy to discussions but would only speak on the condition of anonymity. “The two of those countries have been the most difficult on every issue on climate. They don’t want any types of targets in there, so I think they are trying to make it as vague as possible at this point.” The Canadian Press

Senators to repay expenses A scathing report on the spending habits of Canadian senators suggests there’s a strong sense of entitlement among members of the upper chamber, many of whom often ignore “economical” options that would save taxpayers money. Auditor general Michael Ferguson makes the statement early in a highly anticipated report, coming Tuesday, that finds about $1 million in problematic spending after a two-year review of 80,000 transactions worth about $180 million. On Monday, a trio of top senators said they would repay expenses flagged in the audit, even though they felt they had done nothing wrong. Senate Speaker Leo Housakos, his deputy Nicole Eaton, and Senate Liberal leader James Cowan all said they would give up the right to appeal Ferguson’s findings. Together, they accounted for about $20,000, including Cowan’s $10,000 bill. Senate government leader Claude Carignan has also already repaid about $3,000 in questionable travel claims for one of his staff. The Canadian Press

Video shows officer pushing teen girl A suburban Dallas police officer has been placed on leave after a video showed him pushing a 14-year-old girl in a bikini to the ground outside a pool and pointing his gun at other black teens. McKinney Police Chief Greg Conley said at a news conference Sunday that the incident began when officers responded Friday to a report of a disturbance involving a group of young people at a neighbourhood pool. The police department has said they did not live in the area or have permission to be there. When officers arrived, residents and private secur-

ity pointed out the juveniles, who were “fighting and refusing to leave,” Conley said. As officers dispersed the crowd, the 14-year-old girl was “temporarily detained” by an officer, said Conley, who did not describe what led to her detainment. The video showed the apparently white officer pulling the girl to the ground then appearing to use his knees to pin her face-down. He can also be seen pointing his gun at other teens and cursing. McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller called for the city and police to quickly investigate. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Grand jury indicts officer for murder It didn’t take long for a grand jury to indict a white former city policeman for murder in the shooting death of a black man who tried to flee from a traffic stop. State investigators presented the case against former North Charleston officer Michael Slager to a Charleston County grand jury on Monday, and prosecutor Scarlett Wilson announced the indictment a few hours later. A bystander’s cellphone video shows Slager firing eight times as 50-year-old Walter Scott tried to run away on April 4. The killing enflamed a national debate about how black people are treated by white police officers. But it caused no unrest in North Charleston, where com-

munity leaders and Scott’s family praised the government’s swift response. Slager was charged with murder by state law-enforcement agents and fired from the police force immediately after Scott’s family released the video. The grand jury that reviewed the shooting of Michael Brown by officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Mo., met weekly for three months, hearing from 60 witnesses. Saint Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch then spoke nearly 45 minutes, describing how jurors “poured their hearts and souls into this process” before deciding not to indict anyone in Brown’s death. Angry protests and riots ensued. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Convicts used power tools to break out Investigators are looking into whether civilian employees or private contractors helped two murderers obtain the power tools they used to break out of a maximum-security prison near the Canadian border, New York’s governor said Monday. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said during a round of appearances on television morning news shows that he would be shocked if a prison guard was involved in the

escape from Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. Cuomo said the two killers may have crossed into Canada or left for another state or could even have headed toward Mexico. Canada Border Services Agency on the weekend sent a “look out” on the escape to its officers and said Monday it continued to exercise its usual vigilance. Officials said David Sweat, 34, and Richard Matt, 48, cut through steel walls at the back of their adjacent cells and sliced through steel pipes while making their “Shawshank Redemption”style breakout, which guards discovered early Saturday. and Matt were still on the loose Monday. Investigators are interviewing hundreds of civilian employees and the contractors who have been doing extensive renovations at the 170-year-old prison,

Cuomo said. “We’re going through the civilian employees and private contractors first,” he said on NBC’s Today show. “I’d be shocked if a correction guard was involved in this, but they definitely had help. Otherwise, they couldn’t have done this on their own.” A $100,000 reward was posted over the weekend for information leading to men’s capture. Sweat was serving a sentence of life without parole for the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy. Matt had been sentenced to 25 years to life for kidnapping, killing and dismembering his former boss in 1997. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

IRAQ

Obama concedes military training setbacks Acknowledging military setbacks, President Barack Obama said Monday the United States still lacks a “complete strategy” for training Iraqi forces to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group. He urged Iraq’s government to allow more of the nation’s Sunnis to join the campaign against the militants. Nearly one year after American troops started returning to Iraq to assist local forces, Obama said ISIL remains “nimble, aggressive and opportunistic.” He touted “significant progress” in areas where the U.S. has trained

Iraqis to fight but said forces without U.S. assistance are often ill-equipped and suffer from poor morale. ISIL fighters captured the key Anbar provincial capital of Ramadi last month, prompting Defence Secretary Ash Carter to lament that Iraqi troops lacked “the will to fight.” That was a strikingly negative assessment of a military that has been the beneficiary of billions in U.S. assistance dating back to the war started during the administration of George. W. Bush in 2003. Still, Obama indicated that

simply increasing the number of Americans in Iraq would not resolve the country’s issues. The U.S. currently has about 3,000 troops there for train-and-assist missions. “We’ve got more training capacity than we have recruits,” he said at the close of a two-day Group of Seven meeting at a luxury resort tucked in the Bavarian Alps. G-7 leaders invited Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to join them Monday for talks on the security situation in the Middle East. Obama and Abadi also met one-on-one shortly before the

president departed for Washington. In both public and private, Obama urged Abadi and his Shiite-led government to allow more Sunnis to fight ISIL. The White House has long blamed Iraq’s sectarian divisions for stoking the kind of instability that allowed the militants to thrive. “We’ve seen Sunni tribes who are not only willing and prepared to fight ISIL, but have been successful at rebuffing ISIL,” Obama said. “But it has not been happening as fast as it needs to.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Casbah community cleans up Algeria

Residents tired of waiting for government to take out trash The white buildings of the Casbah spill down the steep hillside overlooking the curved Mediterranean bay of Algiers. Barbary pirates had their headquarters here in the 16th century, preying on European shipping and imprisoning many, including Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Steeped in history with its twisting alleys and Ottomanera houses, this UNESCO world heritage site is also slowly falling apart and choked with trash thanks to poor municipal services. Over the weekend, in a burst of civic pride that has often been absent in the North African nation, a group of Algerians of all ages armed with plastic gloves and garbage bags moved through the ancient streets picking up litter and cleaning out rubblechoked lots. The cleanup project was the brainchild of 25-year-old Yasmine

geria has long had an overbearing state that discourages civil activism and has tried to provide people with all their needs — subsidized food, housing, jobs — in return for them remaining quiet. The case of the Casbah shows, however, that even with all its

resources, the state often doesn’t come through. Residents said it had been years since garbage workers had come through the narrow streets. Sweating in the hot sun, volunteer Mahfoud Touileb described his horror at the accumulated refuse.

“Bags, lots of bags, lots of bottles — soda bottles, soda bottles full of urine. Lots of bottles like this. It is disgusting,” he said with a shake of his head. Once all the trash was bagged, the volunteers put it into government-provided bins. Touileb, a spry 70-year-old, remembers how the Casbah was before, when it was still taken care of, before its population was tripled by immigrants from the countryside and the 1990s civil war when it became an Islamist stronghold. “The Casbah was perfection. The Casbah was clean. There was nothing in the streets,” he recalled. “How can we not participate in a citizen action which gives a little hope, which raises awareness among people to take care of a fantastic resource that they are apparently unaware of ?” Bouchene, the organizer, said there are similar activities around the country, including beach cleanups before the summer, with many co-ordinated through websites and online activism — a marked break from the attitude of just waiting for authorities to fix things. Guam issues marriage licence to lesbian couple LGBTQ rights

First to tie knot: Pair who sued for marriage equality The lesbian couple that sued to overturn a gay-marriage ban was put to the front of the line Tuesday when Guam became the first U.S. territory to recognize gay marriage. Loretta M. Pangelinan, 28, and Kathleen M. Aguero, 29, drew the No. 4 slot as couples were assigned numbers when the Office of Vita Statistics at 8 a.m. Tuesday. But out of respect, they were allowed to be the first gay couple to get their marriage licence. They celebrated by planning to marry right away in a ceremony administered by a territorial official. The couple that drew No. 1 were Deasia Johnson of Killeen, Texas, and her fiancée, Nikki Dismuke, 37, of New Orleans. They have been together three years and are in the military. Court of Guam falls under the 9th Circuit. That same month, Guam Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson directed officials to begin processing same-sex marriage applications, but territorial officials, backed by Gov. Eddie Calvo, refused. The governor sued, and he was represented by an outside firm because the attorney general didn’t agree with the governor’s lawsuit. Although the ban was struck down Friday, Tydingco-Gatewood gave the territory a couple of days to prepare the marriage applications. Lillian Lee, 57, and her partner, Susan Diaz, 65, were also in line to get their marriagelicence application. Lee thanked Pangelinan and Aguero for making “gay marriage possible.” “I’m happy to be married on Guam,” she added. Currently, gay couples can marry in 36 states, the District of Columbia and Guam. About 160,000 people live on Guam, an island about 3,800 miles west of Hawaii. Its residents are U.S. citizens, but they don’t have the right to cast ballots for the country’s president. The territory elects a delegate to the U.S. House, but the delegate is not allowed to vote on legislation. Guam has no representation in the U.S. Senate.

The mother of detained Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian said Monday that Iran has charged her son for simply “reporting on a country that he loves,” as he addressed the judge overseeing his closeddoor espionage trial. Details of Rezaian’s second court hearing remained vague in Iranian media accounts, although the semi-official Tasnim news agency said the 39-yearold bureau chief defended himself in English. The agency said a translator later handed Judge Abolghassem Salavati a transcript of Rezaian’s remarks in Persian. Rezaian faces charges including espionage and propaganda against the Islamic Republic, which the Post has said carry 10 to 20 years in prison if he is convicted. U.S. officials, the Post and rights groups have strongly criticized Rezaian’s trial, demanding he be freed. Rezaian’s detention of over 300 days and his trial come as Iran negotiates with world powers over its contested nuclear program, leading many, including his mother, Mary, to suggest current events may play a role in his case. “Someone believes that there is an advantage to holding him,” Mary Rezaian told The Associated Press outside her son’s hearing at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court. “Personally, I do not think so.”

At the same time, horse racing has declined into a niche pastime that is facing an aging demographic, a shrinking number of race tracks, and competition from new ways of betting on sports. “Marketing has changed, media has changed, and how people consume the product has changed,” says David Carter, a sports business professor at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. “It’s one thing to drive notoriety, but it’s another thing to get people to part with their money.” American Pharoah’s owner, Ahmed Zayat, has already struck sponsorship deals with Monster energy drinks and a private-airplane membership company called Wheels Up. Sylvain Charlebois, a professor with the University of Guelph’s Food Institute, says retail beef prices have risen about 40 per cent over the past three years and the trend has continued to build each month from January through April. Kevin Grier, an independent food industry analyst, says the

North American cattle herd has been on the decline for about 15 years but 2014 and 2015 has been “kind of a tipping point.” Grier says he’s been swamped by calls about beef prices. Charlebois says Canadian ranchers and farmers are benefitting from the higher prices for their cattle but they’re cautious about expanding their herds because of the costs, time and potential risks — noting that cattle prices dropped 70 per cent overnight on May 20, 2003, after an outbreak of mad cow disease. Companies use fuzzy math to boost results Those record profits that companies are reporting may not be all they’re cracked up to be. As the stock market climbs ever higher, investors are warning that companies are presenting misleading versions of their results that ignore a wide variety of normal costs of running a business to make it seem like they’re doing better than they really are. What’s worse, financial analysts who are supposed to fight

corporate spin are largely passing along the rosy numbers in reports recommending stocks. An analysis of results from 500 major companies by The Associated Press found that the gap between the “adjusted” profits that analysts cite and bottom-line earnings figures that companies are legally obliged to report, or net income, has widened dramatically over the past five years. But Zayat will be looking for more, and he has also pledged to try to use the horse’s popularity to try to give thoroughbred racing a boost. The horse is expected to compete in a few more races this year, which will increase interest and attendance at the tracks where he runs and help drive television ratings for those races. As the winner of a crown that went unclaimed for so long that it seemed it would never be won again, American Pharoah will without question sell more merchandise and attract more sponsorship deals than any horse in recent memory. Sturner dreams of bobblehead dolls, lunchboxes, “anything you can think of that people will want to wear,” and a wide range of other sponsorships. is the target the G7 set Monday for the maximum increase in global temperatures above pre-industrial levels. Despite resistance from Japan and Canada, the coalition of rich nations will enter December’s United Nations climate conference as a united front. Temperatures have already risen 0.85 C since 1880, causing rising seas and aggravating natural disasters. If current trends continue, in 17 years we will blow our carbon budget and make a 2 C increase inevitable. To avoid rush hour, try changing your hours Your ride

Robson Fletcher It’s an unscientific experiment, but I’ve reached a conclusion after months of observation: Calgary drivers are much bigger jerks during rush hour. This may not shock you if you regularly battle gridlock, but as someone who works odd hours and rarely encounters the worst of our city’s congestion, I often forget. But I was reminded recently after moving to a new neighbourhood where my girlfriend and I routinely walk our dog at different times of day. Her experience in trying to cross a moderately busy residential road on the way to an off-leash area near our home around 4:30 p.m. has involved drivers repeatedly blowing through crosswalks. Some didn’t notice her at all. Some

did and continued on anyway. Some gave her the finger while they whizzed by. My experience walking the identical route at 10 a.m. involved drivers stopping, waving, and pleasantly smiling at my dog as we made our way serenely across the street. On one occasion, a distracted driver failed to yield, but then noticed his mistake halfway through the intersection and apologized profusely through an open window as he slowly rolled past. It’s quite a difference from the speeding, angry and aggressive drivers who blast through the same crosswalk during rush hour. But I suppose it’s to be expected. I’m a pretty calm guy, but few things stress me out more than stop-and-go, gridlock traffic. On the rare occasions I do drive in rush hour, it makes me feel for the poor people who do it on a daily basis. It even makes me understand how one might be inclined,

after a particularly harried commute, to offer up the Trudeau Salute to a pedestrian at a crosswalk rather than hitting the brake for the umpteenth time that afternoon. But here’s the thing: It doesn’t have to be like this, at least for many of us. In 2015, there’s no reason so many Calgarians all need to use the same roads at the same time of day, every day. In many fields, an increasing number of jobs can be done remotely, at least for part of the day. Checking emails from home for the first hour of the morning, as one simple example, can allow you to avoid peak traffic, saving you time on your commute and boosting your overall productivity for the day. Yet most people — either by virtue of their own mindsets or that of their bosses — still feel awkward not being at their desks at the crack of 9 a.m. “We’re creatures of habit: It’s the way we’ve always

In many fields, an increasing number of jobs can be done remotely, at least for part of the day. worked,” says Robyn Bews, who heads the WORKshift initiative for Calgary Economic Development, which aims to change commuters’ mindsets. And for many of us, that’s all it would take. The nine-tofive workday is a relic of the past. Some of us still have to make our daily commutes at the worst time of day, but for many, it’s no longer necessary. It’s a matter of breaking the habit and finding alternatives. Something to ponder, perhaps, the next time you’re stuck in gridlock. Robson Fletcher covers municipal affairs for Metro Calgary and regularly drives, bikes, and walks in the city.

I fell in love, in part, over Skype. Don’t worry, it’s more icky for me to write than for you to read. (This column was not paid for by Skype.) For months, C. — an American living in New Orleans — and I had been talking mostly through letters (yes, the old-fashioned kind) and a few texts, after a chance meeting while on vacation. When we finally decided to Skype, it felt big. Like first-date big. I remember self-consciously cleaning my apartment as if he were actually coming over. And when I saw him, I was overwhelmed. Looking (or so it felt) into his eyes and hearing his voice, something in me became convinced (sappy, I know). An hour later I booked a two-week visit to New Orleans. That’s why, one day over Skype a few months back, I suggested to him, only halfjoking, that we have two anniversaries: “The first is when we met. The second is when we first Skyped.” C. has a habit of rolling his eyes. He works with kindergartners, and claims he picked it up from them: the slow, exaggerated pupilshanging-in-the-rafters kind of eye-rolling. “No,” he said. “Nope.” I get it. “Happy First Skype Anniversary!” is an exceptionally bad Hallmark card. But in the modern

long-distance relationship, beggars for romance can’t be choosers. If a special moment happens to take place through computer-mediated communication, to use the academic phrase, does that make it any less of a special moment? I don’t think it does. In fact, researchers looking into long-distance dating relationships have shown that couples tend to communicate better — and even feel more intimately connected — when they’re apart, thanks to technology. When all you have is conversation, you end up learning a lot, and sharing a lot. When you can’t kiss the person you love, imagine what you might say to them instead. The digitally enabled feelings are also real. In that first Skype call with C., though we weren’t in same room, I could still feel the pull of him. The attraction was as visceral as our first drink at a bar. (No one says swooned, anymore, right?) I will never argue that seeing C. on a video screen is enough. We’re doing longdistance out of necessity, so we can eventually be together and really share a life. In the end, touch trumps text. But that doesn’t mean a text is always trivial. And if there’s such a thing as love at second sight, it happened to me, no joke, on Skype.

Apple Music app connects it all Latest from apple

Many elements come together for a new way to listen Apple announced Monday that its new music app will cost $10 a month for one person or $15 a month for a family of up to six people. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vicepresident of Internet software and services, said the first three months of Apple Music will be free. Cue said Apple Music will launch in more than 100 countries at the end of the month with a software update. It is also coming to Android devices in the fall. He showed off some features, including the app’s integration with Siri, Apple’s voice-activated assistant at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco Monday. Siri took requests like “Play the song from Selma,” “Play the top song from May 1982,” and “Play the Top 10 songs in alternative.” Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Beats Electronics, introduced Apple Music, an app that combines a 24-hour, seven-day live radio station called Beats 1 with

an on-demand music streaming service. Beats 1, led by former BBC host Zane Lowe, will be broadcast live out of Los Angeles, New York and London. The app will also g i v e artists a forum called Connect to allow them to interact with fans by releasing demos, playlists, sound bites, videos and songs. Drake was on hand at the conference to help introduce the program. The Toronto rapper also said he would release his new album through Connect “Instead of having to post your stuff on these different and sometimes confusing places, it’s all in one place: Connect,” said Drake. Iovine said the app brings together elements of the music world that are confusing and currently spread across many apps.

Now the maker of iPods and iPhones wants to carve out a leading role in a revolution well under way. With millions of listeners already

tuning in to streaming outlets like Pandora and Spotify, analysts and music-industry sources say Apple Music is aimed at winning back some of those customers and nudging longtime iTunes users into a new mode of listening. Analysts say the company needs to build a robust streaming business if it wants to maintain its central role in the popularmusic ecosystem. Most record-

ings today are still sold through digital stores like iTunes, which opened in 2003. But those sales have declined, while streaming services are rapidly gaining subscribers and revenue. “Streaming media is increasingly important to the computer-using experience, so it’s important for Apple to have a role there,” said Creative Strategies analyst Ben Bajarin. Putting a price on music streaming as usage nearly doubles How much are Canadians willing to pay to stream music? It’s a question that continues to flummox analysts, record labels and particularly online streaming services. As one component of its extensive Canadian Nielsen Music 360 report, Nielsen Entertainment polled consumers on how much they’d be willing to spend monthly for unlimited streaming of songs and albums without advertising. The respondents, on average, said they would be willing to devote $6.20 per month or up to

$7.80 for high-quality audio. But, of course, they were speaking on a hypothetical basis. Those numbers lie in the middle of the range of options offered by streaming services in Canada. And with Apple rumoured to unveil its own service imminently, much of the speculation has centred on how much it will cost. Currently, Spotify offers a limited free service in addition to a $9.99 per month premium version, which offers ad-free ondemand listening. Newcomer Tidal provides subscriptions

for either $9.99 or $19.99 per month. Rdio, meanwhile, recently introduced a new $3.99 subscription tier called Rdio Select, joining its free ad-supported streaming radio service and its $9.99 ad-free on-demand service. The new plan allows subscribers to download 25 songs and replace them once per day, as well as offering unlimited song skips and high-quality sound. “This is the coach class version, if we were an airline — and up till now, the only seats available on airlines were business class,” said Rdio CEO An-

thony Bay in a recent telephone interview. Bay said the new tier — less than the cost of a latte, he touts — was essential in part because the average listener spends only

around $45 on music annually. “Although it’s a tremendous value, the challenge with the $9.99 (monthly) price point is it’s more than most people have historically spent on music,” he said. “We think the big opportunity is reaching out to people who have never been interested in subscribing,” he added. “For those people, $20 per month is a big jump — even $10 for a lot of people is a big jump. “We’re very focused on the broad consumer market.” According to Nielsen’s re-

search, that market is growing quickly. In Canada, streaming volume is up 94 per cent since Nielsen began tracking streaming in July 2014. The number of Canadians who reported streaming music in the past year grew to 71 per cent. And streamers skewed young; teens spent twice as much time streaming music as the general Canadian population. Representatives for Tidal and Spotify declined requests for comment. On his incandescent solo debut, In Colour, Jamie xx faced an opportunity to wrest the spotlight for himself. Instead, he chose to invite his xx bandmates to bask in the record’s biggest moments. Romy Madley Croft contributes her haunting vocals to the wistful SeeSaw and the cathartic Loud Places, while Oliver Sim’s icy croon elicits the album’s most resounding echo of the xx on Stranger in a Room. “They’re the easiest people for me to work with and the best, because I know them so well,” said Jamie xx (née Smith) during a recent interview in Toronto. “They’re the reason I’m able to make this record in the first place. It wouldn’t make sense without them.” Upon interacting with the Brit producer, it becomes clear he’s likely the type to peel from the spotlight. But with In Colour garnering rave reviews, he’ll have to endure the attention. The record finds a great balance between conflicting feelings. I enjoy sad music, but then as soon as I’m making music that I’m happy with, I feel the happiest I’ve ever been. So I think what comes out is a juxtaposition of melancholy and joy.

Getting down to the business of today’s music festivals sound check

Alan Cross

On Friday, March 21, 1952, 20,000 kids piled into the Cleveland Arena at the behest of DJ Alan Freed to see almost a dozen acts perform the songs heard on his WJWAM radio show. Although this has been called the firstever rock ’n’ roll concert, the sheer number of performers also allows us to call this the first rock festival. None of the acts that night — Paul Williams, Tony Grimes and The Dominoes among them — could possibly draw that many people on their own. But when bundled together on a single bill, the appeal intensified exponentially. It was also costeffective. Shared resources kept overhead low and margins fat.

Festivals soon went on the road. Buddy Holly was part of the Winter Dance Party with the Big Bopper, Richie Valens, Frankie Sardo, and Dion and the Belmonts when his plane went down in that Iowa cornfield. Dick Clark’s Caravan of Stars took artists from Chuck Berry to the Yardbirds to the people between 1959 and 1967. The stationary rock festival really began with Monterey in 1967, attracting an unprecedented 90,000 people. But then messy Woodstock and the disastrous Altamont followed in 1969, killing much of the appetite for festivals for the next couple of decades. (Europe was a different story; there’s a long tradition of people standing in a muddy field for a weekend of music.) Old-school travelling festivals made a comeback with Lollapalooza in 1991. Added together, a pack of fringe-y alternative acts proved once again you could attract tens of thousands of fans with a package tour. Its success spawned a number of travelling shows including Warped, Edgefest, Summersault and Another Roadside Attraction. Today, festivals are an important part of the summer touring strategy. But instead of a bunch of artists

(There’s a lot more, but you get the idea.) A tour that hits festivals makes great financial sense — and for a great collective cultural experience. Acts of all sizes get to play in front of massive numbers of people. Fans get to enjoy dozens of acts in one place for one price. And while logistically challenging, it makes great sense for promoters, agents, managers and record labels.

URBAN ETIQUETTE ELLEN VANSTONE

The question What’s the proper way to end a text conversation?

Dear Ellen, What’s the proper etiquette for ending a text conversation? I have one friend who texts a lot, and I want to be polite and always text back, but the conversation never seems to end, she just keeps texting, and if I don’t respond she sends 10 more texts to ask if I’m okay, or if I’m mad or whatever, and then I have to respond, but when I … — Lindy Dear Lindy, Sorry I had to cut off your question there, and sorry if it hurt your feelings but I’m doing it for my own good. you will survive. See what I just did? I saw that you were going to waste my time with excessive communication in your needy state, and I took control. I wasn’t rude about it. I didn’t just ignore you and leave you hanging. I didn’t offer transparent lies about my phone falling into the toilet. Or that someone was at the door. Or that I was running late for whatever. I explained my actions, and respectfully ended the conversation. And both of us will be better off for it — me because my time will be put to better use helping you instead of indulging your needy behaviour; and you, because you will be helped by learning that it’s OK to end a conversation. We all have friends who over-text. Some of us, in our day, have been over-texters ourselves, madly sending messages and witty emoticons late into the night when

New job dangerous for waistline, study finds Job stress is often blamed for weight gain, but perhaps previous studies have been wrong. A new study published in the June 4 issue of the International Journal of Obesity showed no link between job stress and weight gain or obesity. The one group that did gain weight was made up of men and women who went from a relatively stress-free work situation into one where they experienced more anxiety. This suggests that a change in job stress levels might be more important to weight gain than a consistent level of stress. Thus, a new job with an increase in workload and pressure would be more dangerous for the waistline than daily work-related stress. AFP

WORK STRESS we’ve been lonely or bored, overly refreshed, or simply overtired. The over-texter is like a rat in a lab experiment, compulsively pressing that damn lever (or send button) to get a food pellet (or reply) for a momentary jolt of pleasure and affirmation (I exist! I exist!). But here’s the problem. When the food pellets (or replies) arrive intermittently, the compulsive behaviour is reinforced even more strongly! This kind of random reinforcement has been clearly demonstrated in studies of both flying rats (pigeons) and slot-machine gamblers (humans). This is why it’s important to be firm and crystal clear when you end a text conversation. You don’t want your ratbrained friend to go haywire at the food-pellet lever, and you don’t want them to suffer when they don’t get a reply. Don’t worry. They’ll survive. Or maybe they’ll find a new victim. Either way, you’re off the merry-go-round of their addictive texting, and you can rest assured you have behaved correctly.

Tyranny of PC too much for Seinfeld What is the deal with Jerry Seinfeld not playing college campuses during his standup comedy tours anymore? Well, the deal, as it so happens, is that the politically correct culture has become too rampant for him to have any fun, so he’s taking his observational humour ball and going home. “They just want to use these words,” Seinfeld told ESPN.

“That’s racist, that’s sexist, that’s prejudice.’ They don’t even know what they’re talking about,” said the comedian. And obviously the best way to make sure that these folks — full-time students, mind you — actually learn anything about what you think they’ve got wrong is to just avoid them all together. Naturally. Moss was escorted off an EasyJet flight from Turkey to London recently for becoming unruly and disruptive after being denied a cocktail by the crew. “She called the pilot a ‘basic bitch’ as police led her off the plane,” a source told the Daily Mail. “She was a little

drunk and had a disagreement with another passenger on the flight as she was refused alcohol and went to serve her own vodka from her cabin luggage.” Ever resourceful, that one. Most shocking, though, is that she was flying EasyJet, which is basically Europe’s version of Southwest. Oh, how the mighty models have fallen.

Battling Bishop inspires Bolts to take series lead STANLEY CUP FINAL

Goalie played through pain while Paquette netted winner While Ben Bishop battled pain, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks put on another fast, fun, classic performance in the Stanley Cup final. Bishop gutted through an apparent injury to make 36 saves, and Cedric Paquette scored the winner with three minutes left as the Lightning beat the Blackhawks 3-2 in Game 3 on Monday night at United Center in Chicago. Tampa Bay takes a 2-1 series lead into Game 4 on Wednesday. Bishop looked like he couldn’t move side-to-side or up-and-down at times. At others he was brilliant, getting the job done despite obviously labouring. The Blackhawks beat him twice, a power-play goal by Brad Richards and one from the slot by Brad Richards, but Bishop making it through all 60 minutes was an accomplishment in itself. At the other end, Ryan Callahan, Ondrej Palat and Paquette scored on Corey Crawford (29 saves) to im-

prove the Lightning’s road record in these playoffs to 8-3. With a raucous sellout crowd of 22,336 roaring for

the first Cup final game here in two years, the Lightning weren’t intimidated and came out flying. As coach Jon Cooper aggressively changed lines to get favourable matchups, players made it pay off. Victor Hedman made one of the game’s best heads-up plays by hitting Callahan perfectly at the blue line with a slap pass from inside his

own goal line at 5:09. Callahan finished by firing top shelf on Crawford to open the scoring. More than 10 minutes of complete Blackhawks domination followed. As Bishop fought through pain moving side to side and getting up and down, Chicago took 15 straight shots on net. One of them beat Bish-

op. Richards bombed away from the point on the power play, and with Andrew Shaw screening, tied the score 14:22 in. After ending a 13 minute 19 second shot drought and getting out-shot 19-7 in the first, the Lightning turned the tables in the second with 17 shots to the Blackhawks’ seven. Crawford stopped them all, none better than Nikita Kucherov’s breakaway out of the penalty box. Crawford also helped the Blackhawks kill a five-onthree power play for 1:26 that fired up the building and built some momentum. With Bishop fighting through the pain, the Lightning got caught on for a long shift in the third period that led to Chicago’s go-ahead goal. Hossa fed a wide-open Saad between the faceoff circles for his seventh of the playoffs at 4:14. The lead was short-lived, as Palat poked a loose puck in at the right post just 13 seconds later. Fans hadn’t stopped cheering by the time the Lightning were celebrating. Hedman’s brilliant night continued as he skated circles around the Blackhawks in the offensive zone and fed Paquette for the winner at 16:49 of the third. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Rapinoe on the double for US

Megan Rapinoe scored twice and the United States overcame early defensive shakiness to beat Australia 3-1 Monday night in the Americans’ opener at the Women’s World Cup. Christen Press also scored for the second-ranked U.S., which is seeking its third World Cup title and first since 1999. Lisa De Vanna had tied the score midway through the first half for Australia, beating controversial American goalkeeper Hope Solo. “Obviously, we were a

bit nervous,” Rapinoe said. “Couldn’t play a lot worse at times.” U.S. star forward Alex Morgan, sidelined by a bone bruise in her left knee, entered in the 79th minute in her first game action since April 11 with her Portland club. Rapinoe scored in the 12th minute for the Americans, Press put the U.S. ahead for good in the 61st, and Rapinoe added her 31st international goal in the 78th minute. The U.S., which won the title in 1991 and ’99, improved

to 5-0-2 in World Cup openers and 23-0-2 in all matches against Australia. “Couldn’t be prouder to have the women of Team #USA representing us in stars, stripes, and shin guards. Good luck,” Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton tweeted. In the absence of the 25-year-old Morgan, 35-yearold Abby Wambach and Canada-born Sydney Leroux started up top against the No. 10 Matildas, whose best World Cup finish was sixth in 2007. Tuesday, June 9, 2015 IN BRIEF Magic Mathews stars as Tigercats rout Redblacks Quarterback Jeff Mathews threw two touchdown passes and led the TigerCats to 20 points in the first half as Hamilton cruised to a 37-10 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Monday night in CFL pre-season play. Mathews, who is competing for the back-up spot behind veteran Zach Collaros, hit Terrence Toliver down the right sideline for a 73-yard catch-andrun TD and threw a 23yard score to Matt Coates streaking down the middle. Mathews, 23, finished the half completing nine of 15 pass attempts for 188 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. THE CANADIAN PRESS

18.8 million tuned into Cavs’ Game 2 victory The NBA Finals’ Game 2 has drawn its highest television rating in more than a decade. The short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers’ overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday night to even the series at 1-1 averaged a 10.5 rating on ABC. That’s the best since the Pistons-Lakers series in 2004. ESPN said Monday that the nearly 18.8 million viewers were up 26 per cent from the 14.9 million for last year’s matchup between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Fan hit by broken bat upgraded to fair condition The condition of the woman hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park has been upgraded to fair. The family of Tonya Carpenter issued a statement Monday that said: “Tonya is responsive, and her condition has been upgraded from serious to fair.” Carpenter, 44, suffered what police initially said were life-threatening injuries during Friday night’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics. She was struck in the head when the bat of Oakland’s Brett Lawrie broke and sailed into the seats along the third-base line. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Libra Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Someone you usually get along with will take an opposing viewpoint today and be quite aggressive about it. But so what? Instead of taking it personally just accept that sometimes even the best of friends can fall out.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 Make sure partners and loved ones know how you feel, especially if you are the kind of Capricorn who keeps a poker face. Sometimes it can be hard even for those who know you best to divine your mood.

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 Forget about things that have gone wrong over the last couple months because you will more than make up for it over the next while. You have never been the sort who likes to feel sorry for yourself, so don’t start now!

Pisces Feb. 20 - March 20 If you have been a bit too free with the cash in recent weeks then you will have to make savings between now and the end of the month. You may be tempted to have one final splurge today but, seriously, what’s the point?
