Woman struck by truck dies HIT AND RUN

Police confirm the death of Centex gas station worker Robson Fletcher

Metro | Calgary Maryam Rashidi, the gasstation employee who was run over by a truck while trying to stop a fuel theft in Calgary on Sunday, died in hospital Tuesday. Police Chief Paul Cook confirmed the death of the 35-year-old Tuesday afternoon, shortly after a close family friend at her bedside

He may bring his son to see his mother for the last time. Family friend Amin Attar on Rashidi’s husband

told Metro she had been declared brain-dead. Her husband faced a difficult decision at that point, said Amin Attar, speaking via cellphone from the Foothills Medical Centre. “The doctor is supposed to remove the life-support because she’s (brain-dead), but we’ve already asked the doctor to not release her from life support because Ahmad, her husband, is thinking about his son,” Attar said. “He may bring his son to see his mother for the last time. He hasn’t decided yet.” He said the young child is about six years old. The whole family came to Canada last year from Iran, initially living in Montreal. They moved to Calgary last fall after Maryam, a chemical engineer by training, found work in the oil-and-gas sector. “Unfortunately, a month ago she got laid off,” Attar said. “In order to survive, for her family, she decided to take some job and she decided to work at the gas station.” MORE COVERAGE ON THE INCIDENT, page 12

The following article is an interview between W.Gifford-Jones M.D. and the creator of Neo40 Dr. Nathan Bryan from the University of Texas. Article taken from “The Doctor Game - W. Gifford-Jones M.D. September 8, 2012

Several months ago I reported on a unique drug, Neo40, which has now been approved by Health Canada. To find out more about Neo40, now available in health food stores, I interviewed Dr. Nathan Bryan, Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Texas Health Center in Houston and creator of the formula. G-J: What is Neo40? NB: Neo40 is a lozenge that contains L-Citrulline, an amino acid derived from protein, vitamin C, beet root and hawthorn, a potent combination that produces nitric oxide. Early in life our bodies manufacture large amounts of nitric oxide (NO). After age 40 production of NO decreases. This sets the stage for hypertension, kidney dysfunction, diabetes, heart attack or stroke, just to name a few major illnesses. It’s called the “miracle molecule” because it helps so many diverse problems. G-J: Is there science behind its claims? NB: The discovery of NO resulted in a Nobel Prize for three U.S. scientists and now over 130,000 scientific papers about this molecule have been published in medical literature. NO is produced in the inner lining of all blood vessels. Lay a single layer of these cells on a flat surface and it would occupy a soccer

field . The cells cause arteries to relax, thus lowering blood pressure. But with insufficient NO, arteries constrict, resulting in hypertension, bringing increased pressure in the heart and other organs. G-J: There must be more to NO than the dilation of blood vessels? NB: Experiments show that NO prevents blood platelets from sticking together, decreases plaque formation and chronic inflammation in arteries, all factors that increase the risk of heart attack. Other research shows NO lowers triglycerides, bad cholesterol, and raises good cholesterol, and it prevents bone destruction from osteoclasts. G-J: Can NO help the epidemic of type 2 diabetes? NB: High blood sugar destroys the circulatory system and 50 percent of diabetes patients die of heart attack. Diabetes causes insulin resistance which makes it hard for glucose to enter cells. Raising NO levels helps to control these problems and also decreases the risk of diabetic ulcers and gangrene of the legs by improving blood flow. G-J: Does NO help other conditions? NB: Many people suffer from glaucoma, increased pressure in the eye. This is caused by a clogged trabecular meshwork that drains fluid from the eye. Hungarian researchers report that NO may benefit this problem. NB: 27 million Americans also suffer from asthma and its inflamed, constricted,

mucous-clogged airways. Experts say it’s due to pollution, allergies and stress. Now research at Hammersmith Hospital in London, England, reports that NO helps to maintain a biochemical balance in air passages and that it could be helpful in treating inflamed airways. Another Dutch study reports that NO can calm nerves in tightened airways and relax muscles. G-J: Can patients increase the production of NO by natural means? NB: The big problem is that obesity decreases NO and 50 percent of the population is overweight, so for them it’s difficult to increase NO by dietary measures. Exercise can also boost NO levels, but people with endothelial dysfunction don’t produce the same amount of NO during exercise as healthy people. We know that weightloss surgery can boost NO by as much as 40 percent. But this is a radical and risky way to lose weight.

G-J: Are foods helpful? NB: Leafy green vegetables such as Kale, Swiss Chard, Arugula, Spinach, Chicory, Wild Radish and Bok Choy are all high sources of bioactive NO. Dark chocolate and wine also increase NO. G-J: What about the use of supplements? NB: Neo40 is the only answer if people refuse to change their lifestyle. This is one lozenge that must be dissolved slowly in the mouth twice a day until NO increases and then used once a day. G-J: Dr. Bryan, it’s been a pleasure to learn of your work at the Institute of Molecular Medicine. I’ll consider your advice about Bok Choy. But it will be difficult to say no to one of your Texas steaks!

City aims to regulate vaping like smoking health

For whatever it may be, from smokes to vapours, I think outside is OK because you’re out in the atmosphere, it doesn’t hang around. But it’s 2015. Metro | Calgary Despite the objections of some councillors and one vape-shop owner, Calgary took another step Tuesday toward regulating e-cigarettes in the same way as traditional smoking. Most members of a city committee agreed with the recommendation from city staff to create a new bylaw that would “prohibit the use of e-cigarettes in public places where tobacco smoking is currently prohibited.” The bylaw still needs to be approved by council as a whole before it would take effect. Coun. Jim Stevenson and Coun. Sean Chu expressed concerns that it might be premature for the city to take that step, given that the provincial government might bring in regulations of its own in the near future. Coun. Evan Woolley, however, said the city shouldn’t hesitate to act on its own. “If we have the ability to show leadership on these things, I think we should,”

he said. Les Hagen, executive director of the Association for Action on Smoking and Health, told councillors regulations are needed as soon as possible because the proliferation of so-called “vaping” is changing public perceptions around nicotine consumption in ways harmful to public health. “E-cigarette use in public re-

normalizes smoking and could reverse the gains that have been made in creating a smokefree society,” Hagen said. But Sean Rankin, a local vape-shop owner, said e-cigarettes don’t have to contain nicotine and are used by many people — including himself — as a smoking-cessation aid. “I tried patches. I tried gum. I tried cold turkey,” Rankin

said, adding that nothing worked nearly as well as vaping to help him quit cigarettes. Dr. Brent Friesen, a medical officer with Alberta Health Services, said “there is evidence to indicate that electronic cigarettes are effective as cessation devices,” but noted the evidence is “weak,” as there have been only limited studies with small sample sizes so far.

I understand the cigarette smoke being banned in public spaces, but I think vaping is different — it’s not as fatal as an actual cigarette. My boyfriend uses an e-cigarette to help him quit smoking and it’s actually helping. Deborah Tomlinson

$54M ranch sets Traffic safety tops record for province councillors’ concerns real estate

annual report

Police seeing more speeders, injuries on Calgary roads Morgan Modjeski

Metro | Calgary Traffic safety was a top concern among city councillors as the Calgary Police Service presented its annual report for 2014 to a city committee Tuesday. Police issued a total of 358,538 speeding summons last year, a jump of more than 15 per cent when compared to the 309,969 handed out in 2013. Ward 6 Coun. Richard Pootmans asked what the police service is doing is to curb the speeding trend, as the number of summons and injury collisions both increased year-over-year. He inquired about what Calgarians can expect when it comes to uniformed enforcement

A sprawling cattle ranch south of Calgary has set a record for the most expensive residential property ever listed on Alberta’s MLS system, according to Sotheby’s Canada Inc. Sotheby’s has listed the 6,000-hectare Bar-N Ghost Pine Ranch for a hefty $42.5 million US, or $54 million Canadian. “People that are looking to buy this type of ranch are people that are not really affected by what’s happening here with the economy,” said Renata Reid, the Sotheby’s real estate agent selling the property. The property sits near the town of Claresholm, about an hour and a half drive south of Calgary and an hour north of the U.S. border. The Bar-N Ghost ranch has 800 cattle and 36 Angus cross bulls and all the barns, corrals and sheds needed for a

Police Chief Paul Cook said the service continues to make traffic safety a priority. “All of our efforts, whether it’s education or enforcement, are driving towards the ultimate goal of increasing the safety on our roadways,” said Cook, noting there has been a “renewed (and) increased effort towards visibility” in Calgary communities. Ward 4 Coun. Sean Chu said he, too, has some concerns about traffic safety, particularly hit-andruns, adding he wants to see even further public education from the CPS. “The fact is, when the police service is doing public education, people actually listen,” he said.

There is also a 5,200-squarefoot ranch home, a guest home, and four village houses for a full crew. “The type of buyer is a foodchain operator that is looking to supplement their beef supply,” said Reid. “Or it can be someone that is international but looking for a high-end hunting ground for mule deer and elk,” added the realtor, who sifted through MLS listings to establish the ranch as the most expensive ever. The property is being sold by a retired oil and gas executive who has chosen to remain anonymous. According to Reid, he is selling the property because his health prevents him from running the ranch. Remote monitoring a boon for hospitals Health

Program ‘beneficial,’ doctor says Anna Brooks

Metro | Calgary Fewer trips to the emergency room coupled with improved patient care has medical ex-

perts saying remote patient monitoring (RPM) systems are likely to become the norm in Alberta. Dr. Todd Anderson, director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, said one of the best examples of RPM success models are the Medtronic Carelink systems for cardiac patients, a program he said is rapidly expanding. “We strongly believe it’s beneficial in decreasing hos-

pitalizations and repeat visits,” Anderson said. “If you can divert somebody as opposed to them coming to emergency and getting tested, there’s cost savings for the system and it leaves room in emergency for people who are sicker.” With Calgary the first place in the country to reach the 1,000-patient mark back in 2011, Anderson said those numbers have since doubled.

For cardiac patients with pacemakers, defibrillators or other heart-monitoring devices, the Medtronic system enables patients to transmit information electronically, which enables health-care providers to monitor patients remotely. Susan Morrison was one of the first Calgary patients to receive an implantable cardioverter defibrillator 24 years ago. Morrison suffers from a condition called “cardiac sud-

den death,” an extreme arrhythmia that can cause sudden cardiac arrest. Since the expansion of the Alberta healthcare’s RPM system, Morrison said it’s been a lot easier managing her condition. “It’s basically an extra special security blanket,” she said. “If something happens and you’re not near anywhere someone can help you, the device automatically does it for you.”

Chinese lanterns to light up city’s zoo This fall, the Calgary Zoo will be lit up in a way never seen before, creating a unique atmosphere for Calgarians that aims to engage the senses and explore multiculturalism. More than 230 handmade traditional Chinese lanterns, including 183 giant animal lanterns and 183 decorative lanterns of all sizes, will be on display for the Illuminasia Lantern and Garden Festival from Sept. 17 to Nov. 1. “We have never had a festival like this before and we are very proud to bring this to our community,” said Clément Lanthier, president and CEO of the Calgary Zoo. The Illuminasia festival will showcase the 800-year-old tradition of Chinese lantern making and will highlight China, Japan and India. The cultures will also be reflected in the zoo’s entertainment and pro-

gramming. Acts will include cultural groups such as Japan’s Kenichi Ebina, the 2013 winner of America’s Got Talent, the Phoenix Hua Yun Artistic Troupe from Montreal and Sparq Productions Bollywood performers from Calgary. George Zhao, president of Hanart Culture, has been commissioned by the zoo to create the lanterns. He said that each lantern takes a considerable time and the work of many people to be completed. “One animal can take up to six artists 10 days to finish,” he said. “This does not include the time it will take to install the lanterns on zoo grounds.” Zhao said that as a Chinese Canadian, he was proud to be able to demonstrate the top quality of the lantern industry in China. IN BRIEF Car collides with home, leaving one injured A 20-year old man was transported to hospital after he crashed into a home in the city’s northwest Tuesday. At around 2:20 p.m., paramedics responded to the 800 block of Northmount Drive NW, where they found a vehicle not in its right place — on the street — but instead up against an adja-

cent house. There was only one person inside the vehicle, the driver, who was subsequently transported to the Foothills Medical Centre in stable, non-life-threatening condition. He was a little worse for wear, with some bumps and bruises. The vehicle, however, had significant damage. Metro

It involves herself and one of her soft-maned horses. “The whole goal is to have a non-threatening situation,” she said. “Literacy is very complex, so it’s not just about knowing the word. Her programs are custom built and focus on the needs of individual children to create a unique lesson plan.

“So many children that have difficulties are so self-conscious, and parents just can’t help themselves but try to correct,” said Abbey. “My framework has always been in collaboration with parents.... Family is important in terms of nurturing a love of literacy.” She said each session, which runs about an hour at $100 a pop, starts with introducing the child

and parents to a farm, which is about an hour northwest of Calgary, and getting them acquainted with the horses. Then they move into reading to the horse in front of mom, pop and Abbey. By the end of the session, parents have photos to take home and create, with the child, a book of their own, documenting the experience.

Residents creating plans for transit council

City hosting brainstorming sessions to pull out ideas Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary It’s not every day you get to help the City of Calgary create development plans for your neighbourhood, but residents who live along the future Green Line LRT route will soon be called on to help bring proposals for their neighbourhoods to city council. “What’s particularly exciting is how genuine and thorough the public engagement

has been from the city,” said Meg Van Rosendaal, chair of the Inglewood design initiative committee. She added she has never been involved in a better city process. The city is hosting three charrettes in the next few months to formulate transitoriented development (TOD) plans for the areas around what will eventually become the Ogden, Inglewood/Ramsay, Crossroads, and finally South Hill LRT stations. A charrette is an intensive design event. Each of these areas will require about 30 members from the community and 20 or so other stakeholders to meet for several workshops. Concepts will later be presented to the public. “The goal of a charrette is

to come up with a plan, and a solution that is agreed upon by all of the participants,” said Joachim Mueller, the TOD lead for the Green Line project. Van Rosendaal said for Inglewood the TOD will be an infill, meaning the city will try to develop underused land for a more efficient multipurpose use. “There will be an opportunity, but we’re not fearful,” Van Rosendaal said. “Ramsay is looking at transforming 11 Street into sort of a sister street for 9 Avenue.”

for amateurs of all levels,” Mickelson said in a release. Barry Ehlert, managing partner of the Windmill Golf Group, explained that the new golf course will be a central aspect of a brand-new 1,750-acre community being constructed in Rocky View County. “This announcement has been seven years in the making,” Ehlert said. “It’s a dream come true. To have Phil Mickelson and his

team involved makes that wait absolutely worthwhile.” This is his first Canadian project, but Mickelson has designed similar courses in Scottsdale, Ariz. as well as in Kunming and Shanghai in China. Builders said the area’s mountainous backdrop and rolling foothills made it the ideal spot for a high-calibre golf course. metro

A ‘devastating’ loss: Mayor death

Harassment suspect turns weapon on police officers Ryan Tumilty

Metro | Edmonton When Edmonton Police attempted to enter Norman Walter Raddatz’s house on Monday night, they were answered with a torrent of gunfire that struck two officers and claimed the life of Const. Daniel Woodall. Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht released new details Tuesday on the hate crimes investigation that eventually led to Woodall’s death. Knecht confirmed that police believe a body they recovered from Raddatz’s burntout house is that of the suspect. Knecht said police are wait-

ing for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. “The case that led to last night’s events was a lengthy hate-crimes file with evidence dating back to February 2014,” Knecht said. “The online hatred and bullying of an Edmonton family had become extreme and the family members were increasingly worried about their personal safety.” Eight officers arrived to arrest Raddatz, 42, on Monday evening, on a charge of criminal harassment, Knecht said. After attempting to breach the door gunshots ensued and Woodall was hit and killed, he said. Sgt. Jason Harley was injured, but has since been released from hospital. Knecht said Harley’s protective vest stopped bullets. “It’s clear that the body armour saved his life.” Knecht said when the shooting began, officers were pinned down by gunfire for at least 10 minutes, unable to move or re-

turn fire as bullets streamed from the house. “We now know that 53 bullet holes were found in the house and garage across the street from the residence, some of those bullets passed right through the house, which speaks to the power of the weapon being used.” Condolences for the fallen officer came in from across the country and throughout Edmonton. Mayor Don Iveson spoke Tuesday and said it was a devastating loss for the community, but more importantly for Woodall’s family. “As your mayor, I reflect the sadness I feel in the community, but I feel this most deeply as the father of young children,” Iveson said, holding back tears. He said Woodall represented Edmonton’s finest. “Edmonton is a safe city, because by and large, good people live here. The very bravest and best among us step forward to become first responders, just like Const. Woodall and Sgt. Harley.”

‘Tragic’ and ‘senseless’ shooting

Police chief addresses Edmonton officer’s death

I think law enforcement across Canada shares in this loss. Police Chief Paul Cook

Morgan Modjeski

Metro | Calgary Calgary Police Chief Paul Cook is calling the death of an Edmonton police officer “tragic” and “senseless.” Cook said law enforcement officials across the country are mourning the loss of one of their own following the death of 35-year-old Edmonton police officer Daniel Woodall. The chief told reporters Tuesday his thoughts and prayers were with the family of the officer, who was shot and killed Monday night while executing an arrest warrant in Edmonton. “Unfortunately, across this country we are reminded of the dangerous work that men and women in law enforce-

ment face and the tragic consequences that can occur,” he said. Cook said it’s with a “heavy heart” that members of the Calgary Police Service think about their colleagues in Ed-

monton. “I think law enforcement across Canada shares in this loss and I think the community shares in the loss,” he said. “So my heart and my condolences go to the City of Edmon-

ton and the Edmonton Police Service and the family.” Woodall, an eight-year officer with the Edmonton Police Service, had travelled to Canada from England in 2006 and leaves behind his wife, Claire,

and two young boys. When asked if the fact Woodall was from the United Kingdom resonates with the force, as a large handful of CPS officers are from overseas, Cook said: “It goes beyond that.” “I think it transcends into who we are as an organization and who we are as a profession, where men and women, day-in and day-out, do their duty to protect the community and protect this country,” he said. He said the death would have impacts that reach beyond members of Canada’s law enforcement community, too. “These are tragic, senseless acts of violence that have longlasting impacts not only on the individual agencies, but the communities in which they serve,” Cook said.

Questions Some questions remain: 1. How did Raddatz die? On Tuesday, an autopsy was performed on a body pulled from the rubble at the scene. Police believe the body is that of Norman Raddatz who owned the home. The autopsy should confirm Raddatz’s death, as well as establish a cause. Edmonton Police did not return fire during the incident. 2. What caused the fire? Not long after the shooting broke out, a fire started in the house that consumed the whole building. Fire officials were on scene Tuesday combing through the rubble, but had not yet determined the cause. 3. Memorial service plans? Chief Rod Knecht has said that Const. Daniel Woodall’s family were still travelling from the U.K. and thus, plans for a service had yet to be worked out. The funeral for St. Alberta RCMP officer David Wynn who was killed in a shooting earlier this year attracted thousands of mourners and officers from across the continent.

Family wants body home Maryam Rashidi

Friend plans fundraising for cost of transportation Robson Fletcher

Metro | Calgary Maryam Rashidi came to Canada in search of a better life and to Calgary in search of a better job. In the span of a month, she lost both. Now, her family is looking for support to bring her body home to Iran. The 35-year-old wife and mother — who took a job at a Centex gas station in northwest Calgary just weeks ago after being laid off from her engineering position with an oil-and-gas firm — died Tuesday in hospital after suffering severe injuries in an attempt to thwart a gas-and-dash on Sunday. one of thousands of Albertans to see their positions in the oil-and-gas sector eliminated in the wake of plunging petroleum prices. The gas-station job was supposed be a temporary solution, a stopgap measure. But that all changed when a man and

a teenager driving in a stolen truck filled the vehicle with fuel Sunday morning and started to drive off without paying. Maryam opted to do something about it. “She decided to stop the truck,” said Attar. “Unfortunately, she was hit.” Police said she was picked up on the hood of the truck, carried for about 15 metres, thrown from the vehicle and then run over. Her injuries were severe, but for a time it looked like she would survive. Police described her condition on Monday as “critical but stable.” Things took a turn for the worse, however, and her husband Ahmad raced to her bedside Tuesday morning after hearing from doctors. “I have bad news from the hospital.... I’m driving there now,” he said Tuesday morning, hours before Maryam died. Attar said Maryam’s loved ones hope to bring her home but need help covering the cost. “They want to transfer the body to Iran,” he said. “We’re trying to do some fundraising for the family.”

INVESTIGATION At least one person of interest in custody Calgary police said late Tuesday night they had taken at least one “person of interest” into custody for questioning in connection to Sunday’s fatal hitand-run. “We’re attempting to locate a second person of interest to conduct interviews on them to determine if in fact they are related to that incident,” acting Sgt. David Fakas said. He said tips from the public led police to a location in the 100 block of Berwick Way N.W. Police couldn’t provide any other details by press time. Maryam Rashidi was fatally injured Sunday when she was struck and run over by a stolen truck as she attempted to stop two people from leaving a Centex gas station without paying for fuel. Police located the truck Monday but were still seeking the suspects. Check metronews.ca for the latest. Morgan Modjeski/Metro

‘Yarnbombing’ for good art

There’s something unusual about an old home in Sunnyside. Last month, it would have been easy to pass by without notice. But now, virtually every square inch of the exterior has been wrapped in knitted fabric of every colour. The house was “yarnbombed” last month by This Is My City Art Society (TMC), an artist collective focusing on Calgarians experiencing homelessness or addiction. The Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) hired the collective to turn the old home into a work of art before it was demolished to make way for a new affordable housing complex. Tuesday to celebrate the installation and upcoming construction, joined by Mayor Naheed Nenshi, MLA David Swann, MLA Sandra Jansen and MLA Mike Ellis. “It shows the warmth of a knitted sweater or comforter, which we can often take for granted,” said Hawke. “So we

wanted people to imagine what it might be like if they didn’t have that comfort.” In 10 days, the building will be unwrapped and prepped for demolition to make way for the new affordable-housing complex. It will be the second complex of its kind, with a total of eight

on the way. Diana Krecsy, president and CEO of CHF, said with 25 apartments, accessible entrances and support services, “it will give our vulnerable population a place to call home, when they didn’t have that before.” Unfortunately, not everyone

who took part in turning the home into an art installation was able to attend Tuesday’s celebrations. Ryan Delve had spent countless hours working on the house as an artist with TMC. Last Thursday, he was found dead along Riverfront Avenue in a suspected homicide. Hawke said his absence was felt by everyone there. “It’s a great legacy for Ryan,” said Hawke. “Art lives on. Art is a really powerful thing, and it brings people together. With art, we can overcome a lot of things, and that is part of what Ryan was all about. Art brought him out of the places where it was really difficult to be, and he expressed it beautifully.”

CEREMONY New lieutenant-governor to be installed Friday Alberta’s new lieutenantgovernor will be installed during a ceremony at the legislature on Friday. The provincial government announced Tuesday that Lois Mitchell would officially take her post, replacing the outgoing Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethell. Mitchell has a distinguished record in business and as a community volunteer. “Her extensive record of volunteer service includes work with amateur sport organizations at the provincial and national level, with a particular focus on hockey and women in sport,” the province said in a release. “She has shared her business acumen on various boards and is past Chair of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and Vice-Chair of the Global Business Forum.” Following the ceremony inside the legislature at 11 a.m., there will be a 100-person military guard of honour and a 15-gun salute. metro

Quebec Parizeau remembered for major economic contributions Widow Lisette Lapointe, along with family and dignitaries, follows the casket of her husband, former Quebec premier Jacques Parizeau as it leaves the church following funeral services Tuesday. Thirty years worth of Quebec leaders attended Parizeau’s funeral, as premiers past and present paid tribute to the sovereigntist icon who is credited with playing a key economic role in ushering the province into the modern era. Every premier since 1985, with the exception of the late Robert Bourassa, attended the service, with Premier Philippe Couillard accompanied by Pierre Marc Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Lucien Bouchard, Bernard Landry, Jean Charest and Pauline Marois. Harper to visit frigate in Baltic Sea: Polish PM Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit a Canadian frigate conducting military exercises with NATO forces in the Baltic Sea, the Polish prime minister revealed Tuesday. Ewa Kopacz made the disclosure during a joint statement with Harper in Warsaw, catching officials with the Prime Minister’s Office off guard and raising questions about whether operational safety may have been compromised. “You might want to know that the prime minister is going to Gdansk (Wednesday) … where he will be visiting Canadian frigates participating in the military exercises,” Kopacz said through a translator to a room packed with journalists. The trip had not been publicly announced by Harper’s office. The leaders did not take questions from journalists, making joint statements instead.

Ally Poland is a major European ally of Canada, which deployed more than 200 troops here on NATO training exercises last year.

Defence Minister Jason Kenney later confirmed that the prime minister would indeed be visiting HMCS Fredericton as a show of solidarity with Canadian military personnel and their allies. Earlier, Harper took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in the historic square where Polish-born Pope John Paul II delivered a stirring homily in June 1979 that stressed human dignity in support of the Poland’s anti-communist Solidarity movement. Auditor general calls Duceppe to reprise for outside oversight role as Bloc leader federal politics

The Bloc Québécois is turning to a familiar face to lead it into this fall’s federal election in a bid to revive its flailing political fortunes. Gilles Duceppe is returning as leader of the Bloc, reprising a role he held for 14 years before the sovereigntist party was nearly wiped off the electoral map in 2011. A source said on Tuesday that Mario Beaulieu, the current leader, will remain in the fold as party president. The Bloc has called a news conference for Wednesday morning in Montreal that Duceppe and Beaulieu are both scheduled to attend. Currently, the Bloc has only two MPs out of 75 in Quebec

Police comb town for cons prison break

Residents say two men were seen along road late Monday State and federal law officers searching for two killers who used power tools to break out of a maximum-security prison converged on a small town about 50 kilometres away Tuesday after getting a report of a possible sighting. Dozens of officers formed a line and made their way through a pasture and woods in the town of Willsboro while a helicopter hovered above. Other searchers walked along nearby railroad tracks. They descended on the town just west of Lake Champlain after residents reported seeing a couple of men walking on a road late Monday during a rain storm. The breakout over the weekend from the 3,000-inmate Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., close to the Canadian border, immediately raised suspicions that the in-

mates had inside help in cutting through a steel wall, breaking through the bricks and crawling through a steam pipe. They eventually emerged through a manhole outside the prison grounds. Among the questions: did someone hear them cutting their way out? How did the inmates hide the hole, the dirt and

dust from work that probably took days to accomplish? And did they have access to blueprints or other inside information to chart their path through the bowels of the prison? Sweat, 34, and Matt, 48, had stuffed their beds with clothes to fool guards making their rounds and left behind a taunting sticky note that read: “Have a nice day.”

The prisoners surely had help, and the noise must have been heard, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. But Cuomo said other inmates claimed they didn’t see or hear anything. “They’re all heavy sleepers,” he said sardonically. In looking for those who may have aided the escape, Cuomo said investigators were focusing first on civilian employees and contractors who have been doing extensive renovations at the 170-year-old prison. “I’d be shocked if a correction guard was involved in this, but they definitely had help,” the governor said. Corrections officials said an inventory of the prison’s tools has so far shown none missing. But contractors typically bring truckloads of equipment, said Peter Light, a retired guard. The RCMP said Monday it had no information to indicate the two had crossed into Canada. Sweat was convicted in the 2002 killing of a sheriff’s deputy and was doing life without parole. Matt was serving 25 years to life for kidnapping and dismembering his boss in 1997.

IN BRIEF Officer resigns after violent pool-party video goes viral The white police officer who was recorded on video pushing a black girl to the ground at a Texas pool party resigned from the police force Tuesday. Officer David Eric Casebolt resigned from the McKinney Police Department after almost 10 years on the force, said his attorney, Jane Bishkin of Dallas. Police Chief Greg Conley said a review of the incident’s footage showed that “our policies, our training and our practices do not support his actions.” “He came into the call out of control, and the video showed he was out of control during the incident,” he said. Surgery saves life of poached rhino South Africa

Asian demand for horns is increasing, driving trade The horns and a large section of the rhino’s face were hacked off by poachers, a horrific injury that exposed flesh and bone. One South African veterinarian treating the mutilated animal was so distressed by the suffering that he had to step away, his eyes glassy with tears. Then Dr. Johan Marais, an equine and wildlife surgeon at the University of Pretoria, rejoined the extraordinary effort to save the life of the four-yearold rhino, now named Hope. “You just can’t believe that somebody from our own species can do that to an animal,” Marais said of the gaping

wound that exposed part of the rhino’s skull and narrowly missed her eyes. On Monday, a team of veterinarians cleaned and dressed the injury before securing a fiberglass shield on what remained of the rhino’s face with wire stitches and steel screws drilled into the skull. An Associated Press team witnessed the operation on the sedated, 1.8ton animal in a muddy enclosure on the edge of Shamwari Game Reserve, near the South African city of Port Elizabeth. Hope’s caregivers seek to rally support for a story of survival amid the escalating poaching in South Africa, which harbours about 20,000 rhinos, roughly 90 per cent of the world’s population. The South African government recorded more than 1,200 poached rhinos last year, reflecting growing demand in parts of Asia, where rhino horn

is believed to have medicinal benefits. There is no scientific evidence to support that: the horn is made of simple keratin, a protein also found in human fingernails. The rhino being treated on Monday was darted by poachers, who severed her horns while she was sedated, fracturing her nasal bone and exposing the sinus cavities and nasal passage. The attack happened in Lombardini, a wildlife park where poachers recently killed several other rhinos. Discovered alive days later, the rhino was given the name Hope by rescuers. She was moved to the nearby Shamwari reserve, where an initial surgery occurred on May 18. She is “a voice for what the species is going through,” said Dr. William Fowlds, a wildlife veterinarian who was the anesthesiologist on Monday.

When he got sick after his return to South Korea, he visited several hospitals and clinics, where dozens of other patients and hospital workers were infected before officials found he had MERS. EU set to label goods made in settlements Israel would be required to label products that are made in West Bank settlements and exported to Europe, according to guidelines being prepared by the European Union. The move is the latest sign of international discontent with Israeli construction of settlements on occupied lands claimed by the Palestinians, as well as frustration over the state of Mideast peace efforts. It also comes as a grassroots movement promoting boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel appears to be gaining steam. Israeli officials reject the labelling plan, saying it would amount to a type of boycott and help discourage Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas from returning to negotiations. “Why should he talk? He can get by without talking. He can

get by with an international community that blames Israel for not having talks,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Herzliya Conference, an annual gathering of the country’s political and security elite. An EU official said Tuesday the 28-nation bloc’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, told European foreign ministers May 18 that work is underway and that a set of guidelines will be “finalized in the near future.” Another EU official said it would likely be months before the guidelines are complete. EU opposition to the settlements is not new. A free trade agreement with Israel already excludes settlement goods, even if they say they were made in Israel. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Firm founded in 1930 falls victim to digital world Photography chain Blacks is shuttering all of its 59 stores in Canada after nearly 70 years of selling pictures, albums and frames. Parent company Telus said the closures will take ef-

fect Aug. 8 and affect about 485 employees, most of whom work in Ontario. “Technological innovations have changed the way Canadians take and share photographs, with fewer of us using retail photo outlets,” company spokeswoman Luiza Staniec said. An unspecified number of the laid-off employees will be offered jobs at Telus or Koodo head offices, as well as at retail outlets or call centres, while others would be offered a “tran-

sition package,” she said. Bruce Winder, a retail analyst with J.C. Williams Group Ltd., said he wasn’t surprised by the shutdown. “If you go back 10 years ago, folks bought digital cameras. Now everyone has digital cameras on their smartphones. “The market is polarized,” Winder said. “You’re either a professional camera enthusiast and you go to Henry’s, or you don’t and you use your cellphone like 99 per cent of

the big thinG: Financial literacy

Time to shape up

Canada’s financial literacy leader, Jane Rooney, says 60 per cent of us don’t know how much we need for retirement, and 55 per cent fail to use the “fundamental tool” of a home budget.

The federal government thinks we need a lesson in how to manage money. On Tuesday, Ottawa announced a $10-million strategy to co-ordinate programs that aim to help Canadians learn to manage debt, save for retirement and avoid scams.

Could be worse

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Good debt, bad debt Canada’s household debt-to-income ratio reached an eye-watering record of 162 per cent in 2014, thanks in large part to low interest rates and high home prices. But personal loans — often the most disastrous — are actually on the decline, and the rate we’re acquiring credit-card debt is slowing.

Our household savings rate has been all over the map for the past century. It peaked around 16 per cent in the mid-1940s and again in the early 1980s, dipped into the red during the Great Depression and fell to a dangerous low of 3.6 per cent in 2005. In the first quarter of this year, Canadians squirreled away five per cent of their paycheques.

Great art doesn’t get made in a boardroom Social Discourse

Omar Mouallem

Beware of anyone using the word “silos” who is not a farmer. It’s what suits say instead of “groups,” as in, “The difficulty with the (Canada Council for the Arts) now is that everything is organized by disciplinary silos that are very complex to navigate.” Those were the words of the CCA’s new CEO Simon Brault during a Canada Arts Summit speech last spring, where he also promised more “outcome-driven” grant programs for Canadian artists that will “have more impact.” Artists should laugh in the face of anyone who asks for “objectives” before the creative process has even begun, but instead they now have to adhere to this boardroom puffery if they want their

work government-funded. Last week the CCA unveiled its simplified funding system, which will soon reduce 147 grant programs to just six broad categories. It’s a noble cause, as the old process was cumbersome, to say the least. But at least it was somewhat comprehensible. Peace out “Grants to Dance Professionals.” Sayonara, “Grants to Professional Orchestras.” You’ll now have to choose from a menu of buzzwords still reeking of the dryerase markers with which they were born. That now includes a category called “Engage and Sustain,” with the outcome of “reflect(ing) the diversity of the communities that they participate in through their staffing, programming and public engagement responsibilities.” Does this mean creative diversity? Intellectual diversity? Social diversity? So much for simplicity. Art is an act of discovery

divined from the experiences, observations and imaginations of its creators and collaborators. And it’s an act of entertainment and expression, not innovation, much as the CCA’s constant trumpeting of the arts’ $50-billion GDP contribution is intended to entertain politicians and people (sorry, I mean stakeholders) who couldn’t care less about the quality of the art. Maybe it works for them, but audiences gain nothing from an artist crossing off corporate objectives while writing a grant proposal. It’s the same anathema that’s turned most galleries’ artist statements into head-tilting jibber-jabber, poisoning the exhibition before it’s even viewed. Consider the effect of 1930s Soviet art, which hewed to a state-enforced mandate of optimism and heroism, to be exported internationally. The result,

Audiences gain nothing from an artist crossing off corporate objectives while writing a grant proposal. then, was art decidedly onmessage and redundant. No, the CCA, whatever it is, isn’t a bastion of socialism. Atom Egoyan’s next film won’t star a Canadian actor as the common man finding fulfilment in labour. But artists obsessing with vague guidelines about “diversity,” “innovation” and “engagement” in order to make it past the gatekeepers will surely yield art that’s equally stale. There is no freedom from the pull of things Marie Kondo is not your saviour from stuff. The maven of minimalism and author of a trendy book on tidying might be your saviour from a lot of stuff — from overflowing closets and shelves, from the sense you live in Mary Poppins’ purse. She will even curate you: through her prescription to keep only that which brings joy, you’ll be able to justify the gold-plated scissors you’ve been coveting, once you’ve thrown out the plastic pair that was definitely not joyful. But what do you end up with? Stuff, just as before. All of it. Things. And, perhaps, a dresser drawer with shirts so neatly rolled it looks like a Pez dispenser. In reaction to Kondo’s methods, some have come out in praise of clutter. One writer wondered in the New York Times, “Why on earth would we get rid of our wonderful things? I have many books, many paintings, many pots and many more things I love.” So do I. But that’s not an argument against Kondo. The call to curate stuff and the call to abundantly collect it both stem from the same impulse: the desire for things. One is the new world of the carefully chosen item, where everything you own aligns with a singular vision of your rarefied lifestyle.

One is an older world, where, since you could afford to have lots of stuff, why not have it all? Both are underpinned by consumer culture and the belief that the best way to express who you are is to buy — or not buy — something. There is no freedom from the pull of things. Even if I had almost nothing (as many do), I’m sure I could love a useless item. Not just for what it is, though it may be beautiful, but for what it means. Like the gold necklace that was once my mum’s, with two pendants, one of a dove and one of the Parthenon. Wearing it made me feel she was close, even across continents. It was stolen, and I still mourn its loss. The Canadian painter Agnes Martin (posthumously hot right now) aimed for a thing-less life. In the 1960s, she moved to a remote part of New Mexico, discarded most belongings and lived on odd, restricted diets, like preserved tomatoes and hard cheese. She reportedly felt possessions only fed her ego. “I paint with my back to the world,” she said. But even she did not dogmatically follow through. In her later years, while still living sparingly, she let a little luxury in: driving to and from her studio in a white BMW.

Piper Chapman is ‘revelling’ in her new role at Lichfield

One of Season 2’s big cliffhangers was that Piper got Alex thrown back in prison. Was she trying to protect Alex, or did that come from a selfish place? I think it’s all of those things — Piper was operating from all of those places. And that’s what’s so fun about this work is that it’s so rich and complicated and knotted. Metro | New York City Piper Chapman has come a long way from her first days at Lichfield. While Seasons 1 and 2 of Orange Is the New Black saw her struggling to find her way in the strange and confusing hierarchy of the prison, Season 3 sees her finally come into her own, according to Taylor Schilling. The Netflix star says Piper may finally be getting the hang of the place, and we chatted with her about what’s to come for Lichfield’s finest. If there’s a theme for the third season, what would you say it is? We’ve talked about it as an ensemble, about it really being based around faith and belief and how faith manifests differently in different people and what we classically think of as a system of faith and what we really believe in and how that plays out in people’s lives. How do you think Piper is growing as we see her in the third season? She started this story, and this journey, having a solid idea of who she thought she was, and her life was pretty nailed

But if you really examine what’s going on, there’s a lot of cracks and there’s a lot of leaks. So, prison has forced her to really look at what’s happening within her. And I think the

journey is that she’s finding and enjoying parts of herself that she didn’t really know existed. And a strength and determination, and wildness and a recklessness and a pleasure, a joy, a power. It’s almost like trying on different articles of clothing and seeing that lot of them fit. Not to diminish the suffering she goes through, but she does seem like she’s finding

ways to be happy in there. Yeah, exactly, and I think even finding pleasure in the power, or pleasure in the manipulation or pleasure in the strength. It doesn’t necessarily add up to the way that she thought happiness or success looked when she came in to prison. So her conception is changing. Do you think she’s finding her place a bit more?

Absolutely. I think she was a fish out of water and she spent Season 2 finding her place, and now she’s exploring her place, and she’s enjoying it, and she’s revelling in it, and she’s trying on different facets of who she is. Is it good to have Laura Prepon back full time as Alex Vause? Yeah, I love Laura. She’s a dear friend, like so many girls in

and she is a wife, she is a best friend, she is a daughter, she’s a lover and a caretaker, but she’s also confused and angry and manipulative and disloyal and attention-seeking and power-hungry and all of those things. That’s a real woman. All of those things existing within. I long for that and I’m excited by that, to see someone who’s not a picture or an idea, but a fully fleshed-out person.

NEW DEAL

Degrassi to target Gen Z at new home on Family Channel Class is back in session for the beloved Degrassi franchise. Days after MTV Canada said it would no longer run the teen serial, Family Channel announced Tuesday it will debut a new instalment in January 2016. The youth-focused network said Degrassi: Next Class will return with 20 half-hour episodes, with cast members from the most recent incarnation reprising their roles. Like its predecessors, the new version will tackle tough issues such as homophobia, racism, substance abuse, body issues

and the complications of dating in the social media age. Executive producer Stephen Stohn said the channel-jump coincides with his own shifting plans for the series. Stohn said he began musing on targeting a new audience — Generation Z — back in January when they were preparing for the upcoming season on MTV. “For many years we’ve been telling stories to the millennial generation,’’ said Stohn. “This is the young generation that either were born after 9/11 or whose first memories are

after 9/11. So they know a world that is not a friendly world, it’s a world of terror, it’s a world of financial uncertainty and it’s a world of school violence. And also they have grown up with a phone and often a smart phone in their hands.’’ The sudsy teen saga moves to Family Channel as the youth-focused broadcaster breaks from Disney fare and rebuilds its lineup. Degrassi: Next Class is produced by DHX Media’s Epitome Pictures, in association with Family Channel and the

streaming service Netflix, which will run the show worldwide starting early next year. Netflix Canada will get the series after its initial run on Family, said a DHX publicist. Stohn said the Netflix deal ensures that the show’s edge won’t soften just because it is on Family Channel. The move cements Degrassi as the longest-running dramatic television series in Canadian history. The franchise is currently celebrating its 35th anniversary. THE CANADIAN PRESS

While I adore a pint of craft beer as much as the next guy, I’m not getting any younger. Risking the wrath of hipster craft brew lovers, I confess that the older me doesn’t mind lighter beers — and by light, I mean the mass-produced stuff. While they will undoubtedly turn their noses up at a glass of Miller Lite (12x355ml, $20.49 to $25.29) — the original light beer that has finally landed in Canada — traditional

craft beer supporters argue that the boozy IPA-style brews, popular today, are killing the market for lower alcohol “session” beers. In the U.K., where ale is king, beer under 5 per cent alcohol is what they drink a few of in one sitting (or session). Nowadays I’m concerned about the calories. The average glass of craft brew has more than 300, while one filled with Miller Lite clocks in at 96. Though younger drinkers may not care; at my age I typically start with something crafty and then turn to the light side. Prices reflect the range across the country. Chefs go lentil on tour

Food Canadian ingredients

Restaurants create dishes in cross-country competition Chefs in two dozen restaurants across Canada are competing this month with signature dishes all incorporating the same homegrown ingredient: lentils. The restaurants in seven cities have added the creations to their menus for customers to order and vote on during the FunDeLentil competition in June.

Culinary activist Anita Stewart put together the list of restaurants — which are also Food Day Canada participants committed to using Canadian ingredients — on behalf of the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers and Canadian Lentils. “It’s right down my alley. In terms of my mission statement to actively promote the growth and study of our distinctly Canadian food culture, well, this is it,” the University of Guelph food laureate said Thursday at George restaurant in Toronto. “It’s a way to support our own farmers and lentils are also really delicious and healthy.

Lentils are so darn versatile. Anita Stewart, culinary activist behind the FunDeLentil Tour

Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of lentils, planting more than 1.3 million hectares of lentils last year. Types produced in Canada include commonly known green lentils and split red lentils, and lesser-known black or beluga lentils and French Green lentils. The chefs were invited to use one or a combination of lentils grown in Canada in their dish. Lorenzo Loseto, executive

chef at George, brûléed lentils sprouted at the restaurant for a salad paired with seasonal Dungeness crab and beluga lentils. Loseto said he often uses lentils in innovative ways, such as a savoury crumble — they’re cooked, fried till crunchy, paired with crispy horseradish and used as a garnish. He incorporates red lentils into a dressing for a romaine salad with Parmesan cheese. “It tastes like a caesar salad, but it doesn’t have eggs,” he said. For his offering, Craig Flinn, chef-owner of Chives Canadian Bistro in Halifax, is serving a strudel filled with smoked duck and green lentils with foie gras and a rhubarb jelly made from his mother’s garden, Stewart said. The choices are “as upscale as you want it or it’s as comforting as a lentil shepherd’s pie,” said Stewart, who was appointed in 2011 to the Order of Canada for her promotion of the food industry in Canada. Paper magazine about sexual mores and her own “fluid” sexuality. “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age,” says Miley, who posed naked with her pet pig for the magazine. “Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.” That’s probably a lot of people, ma’am. You might want to narrow it down a bit more. ned ehrbar/metro

Sex Pistols fans are really not amused virgin money

‘Hardly punk’: Band’s artwork to appear on credit cards Fans of British punk pioneers Sex Pistols reacted angrily on Tuesday after it was revealed that record-sleeve artwork from the anti-establishment icons was to feature on a range of credit cards. U.K.-based card issuer Virgin Money said it was “time for consumers to put a little bit of rebellion in their pocket,” but fans took to Twit-

Another tweeter Pierre Kirry quoted lyrics from the band’s infamous Anarchy in the U.K. single, writing: “The new #SexPistols credit cards certainly give ‘Don’t know what I want but I know how to get it’ a new spin.” The British flag cover from the 1976 single will adorn one of the new 18.9 per cent APR cards, as will the “ransom note” cover from the band’s only studio album, Never Mind the Bollocks. cool features • Volvo’s interface relies on a controller and switches (not a touch screen). • One of the more comfortable and best-looking front seats in the business. • Front and rear skid plates, and Hill Descent Control, increases off-road capability.

Market position • All-wheel drive version of the V60 station wagon. • An alternative to compact luxury crossovers, such as Volvo’s own XC60. • For those who gravitate toward understated Scandinavian style, and top safety features.

Some car companies can get away with not offering a traditional station wagon, but not Volvo. And good for us, because Volvo’s commitment to keep modernizing the station wagon form has brought us this lovely 2015 V60 Cross Country. Volvo’s entry-level 60 series of sedans (S60), crossovers (XC60), and wagons (V60) debuted back in 2011, and received a major mid-cycle revision for 2015. AWD versions of Volvo V60 are called Cross Country, and are raised 65 mm higher than FWD V60 versions. Cross Country is also fitted with 18-inch wheels and skid plates, to signify its offroad prowess, and also gets squared-off “fender extrusions,” which makes it look kind of Jeepy. Our top-shelf Platinum model ($50,400 MSRP) was outfitted with the impressive Technology Package ($1,500), which threw on Adaptive Cruise with Queue Assist, Collision Warning (with Full Auto Brake), Pedestrian and

Cyclist Detection (with Full Auto Brake), Distance Alert, Driver Alert Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping, and Speed Limit Information, which makes speed limit signs appear magically in the dash. But the feature I liked best is the Cross Country exclusive sport seats rendered in black leather and brown stitching. They are just wonderful: easy to look at and touch, supportive, supremely comfortable. The whole design manages to be Scandinavian and clean and easy to use, featuring an interface that uses actual buttons and switches (versus a touch screen). On the road, the 2.5-litre turbo “five-cylinder” feels lusty, but the newer 2.0-litre turbo “four” feels almost as lusty, and offers better efficiency. Those all-new 2.0-litre engines are only available (so far) on S60 and XC60. Handling is better than most crossovers, because of the lower centre of gravity, and a great chassis, which is also adept at delivering a very comfortable and controlled ride — V60 offers a very luxury-car feel on the road. The V60 Cross Country is not like Volvo wagons of yore, which were famously boxy and big. This is a tidy wagon, with just adequate space in the rear and cargo area (for a wagon). You can’t easily throw bikes back there, for example, and the sleek profile takes a bite out of rear headroom space.

Features pack used GM SUVs used vehicle

Check oil consumption in 2007-2014 models In the midst of a dying big-SUV marketplace, GM launched its new wave of sport utility vehicles for model year 2007, offering Yukon, Yukon XL, Suburban, Tahoe and Escalade variants with better than ever mileage, performance and feature content. A proven high-strength truck structure helped round out the package with durable capability, and generous room for people and cargo was on offer in all models. As most 2007-2014 models in this generation of GM fullsized sport utility vehicles will pack the 5.3-litre V8 engine with AFM cylinder deactivation, shoppers are advised to check this powerplant for signs of oil consumption and other related issues, which are common, and well-documented in the owners community.

Have a dealer use the VIN number to pull up all service records, noting any that indicate an oil-consumption problem. Shoppers are also advised to listen for unwanted clicking or clacking noises from the top of the engine, with the hood open and engine idling. Unwanted sounds like these could indicate problems, possibly related to the oil-consumption issue. Note that oil consumption issues seem most likely in 2007 to 2009 models with the 5.3-litre engine. Ensure proper operation of the cruise control system, too. If it’s not working, it’s probably because of a bad brake-light switch, which is a cheap and easily replaced part. Ensure the 4x4 system, switches between its various modes as outlined in the owner’s manual. If the system doesn’t engage, or you note any “Service 4x4” warnings, be sure to have a GM mechanic determine why. Note that the Escalade ran an All Wheel Drive (AWD) system, so no switching of modes is possible. Open the front doors and feel the carpeting under the

Features Feature content was fitting of a world-class performance car, and included goodies such as adjustable shocks, an adjustable rear differential, premium audio, memory seats, Bluetooth, navigation, iDrive central command, automatic lights, automatic climate control and more.

Engines/trim Look for standard V8 power from a 4.8-, 5.3- or 6.2-litre engine. The high-end Escalade got the 6.2-litre V8 with 403 horsepower, which was available optionally on other models. Most used models will have the 5.3-litre V8.

What owners like Typically, owners praise their SUVs for great ride quality, confident towing and hauling capabilities, a decent blend of power and fuel economy, and a rugged, safe and solid feel.

front floor mats for signs of moisture, which could be caused by a leaky windshield seal and/or plugged sunroof vent tubes. Moisture can lead to rust and mould, so this issue will need to be addressed. Now’s the time to make sure

the Bluetooth, heated steering-wheel, chilled memory seats and power tailgate, if equipped, are working properly, too. None of these will be inexpensive to fix if they’re not functioning. JUSTIN PRITCHARD

What owners dislike Complaints typically centre around difficulty parking, and excessive fuel consumption on some models.

The verdict An early model with the 4.8- or 6.2-litre engine, or any 2010 or newer model, will likely make the most confident purchase, provided the vehicle passes a mechanical inspection first.

34 Wednesday, June 10, 2015 automotive NEWS Ferrari to resurrect coveted dino model

The Dino is among the most cherished and collectible of all classic Ferraris. Parc Ferme Experience Ltd

New model comes decades after original’s launch Ferrari is dusting off the Dino badge for an all-new V6 model to be released in 2018, company chairman Sergio Marchionne has confirmed. The original Dino 206 GT and its successors, the 246 GT coupe and GTS targa are among the most cherished and collectible of Ferrari classics. The original Dino debuted in 1968 and was a revolution-

ary Ferrari in several ways. For one, it was “affordable,” in supercar terms at least. The new car will have a mid-mounted V6, like the original, however it will get two turbochargers and be capable of outputting more than 500bhp. Add in a price point expected to be around $250,000 CDN, and it could be a direct challenger to the Porsche 911 Turbo, Audi R8, and the new McLaren 570S. AFp

IN BRIEF Change of surfaces doesn’t cure Bouchard’s slump Back on her favourite surface, top-seeded Eugenie Bouchard lost in the first round at the Topshelf Open on Tuesday. Bouchard, who last year became the first Canadian to reach a Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, was beaten by Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Bouchard reached three consecutive Grand Slam semifinals last year but is going through a difficult season, having lost nine of her past 10 matches, and dropped out of the Top-10 rankings. She lost her opening match at the French Open. The Associated press

Giants’ Heston tosses no-hitter against Mets Chris Heston pitched a no-hitter in his 13th majorleague start, coming within three hit batters of a perfect game and leading the San Francisco Giants over the New York Mets 5-0 Tuesday night. Heston (6-4) struck out 11, walked none and allowed just two balls into the outfield: flyouts by Wilmer Flores in the second inning and Michael Cuddyer in the seventh. The Associated press Ed-wing takes flight for Blue Jays in walk-off win Edwin Encarnacion hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to rally the Toronto Blue Jays to their seventh straight win with a 4-3 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday. Josh Donaldson led off the inning with a single to right field. After a strikeout to Jose Bautista, Encarnacion hit a shot over the centre-field fence off Miami’s A.J. Ramos. The Canadian press

Women’s World Cup France Strong-arms its way past England England defender Laura Bassett, left, and France midfielder Camille Abily vie for the ball during a Group F match at the Women’s World Cup in Moncton, N.B., on Tuesday. Eugenie Le Sommer scored in the 29th minute to help France to a 1-0 win. Sarah Bouhaddi had a clean sheet in the tournament opener for both teams. Canada’s Bélanger called upon to get defensive Women’s World Cup

Normally a forward, Quebecer fills void at fullback Two games into an unexpected stint as a fullback, Canada’s Josée Bélanger looks right at home. The converted forward has stepped up since being called on due to injuries to Rhian Wilkinson (hamstring) and Marie-Eve Nault (calf). Bélanger set up Sophie Schmidt’s goal in a 1-0 win over England in Canada’s final outing before the Women’s World

Cup. And the 29-year-old from Coaticook, Que., rattled a shot off the crossbar in Canada’s 1-0 win over China in the tournament opener Saturday. And like Allysha Chapman on the left side, the pacey Bélanger has consistently charged up the flank. Both fullbacks played important roles against China as Herdman went to a more offensive 3-4-3 formation late in the game, pushing the fullbacks up high to press for the go-ahead goal. As with most of his players on the day, Herdman saw positives and negatives in their play. “Brilliant. It was great to watch Chapman and Bélanger join in and bring that modern

Whatever the team needs, I’ll be ready. Josée Bélanger

fullback to the game,” Herdman said. “But at the same time they were a little bit sloppy at times and we’re going to work on some of their decision-making. They’re

the things we keep improving during the tournament.” While Wilkinson and Nault are working their way back to full health, Bélanger has been a welcome temporary fix. And she may be back on the right flank Thursday when eighth-ranked Canada plays No. 17 New Zealand at Commonwealth Stadium. New Zealand, the team John Herdman left to coach Canada, lost its tournament opener 1-0 to the Netherlands on Saturday. The Football Ferns are 0-9-1 at the World Cup, with Herdman in charge for the lone point earned in 2011. Herdman tried Bélanger out at fullback during part of a pretournament training match with

Nigeria at Toronto FC’s practice ground. Despite her lack of experience at the position, Bélanger was quick to see ways to use her technique and pace operating at fullback. “I can combine with the forwards,” said Bélanger. “I know a little bit more (about) their runs because I’m a forward. So I know what they’re doing and I can join (in) with my speed.” Herdman talked to Bélanger briefly about her new role, but then left her alone. “I think he appreciated the fact that I’m actually not thinking too much and I’m playing on instinct. It actually feels good as a player to play with instinct. You’re more in a rhythm.” the Canadian Press

Heady days for Lightning defenceman Stanley Cup final

Hedman is X-factor in Tampa’s push to topple Chicago Anton Stralman witnessed Victor Hedman fire a 120-foot slap pass to Ryan Callahan for a goal, and then lead the rush

and set up Cedric Paquette for the game-winner. “How do you find those plays, man?” Stralman asked his defence partner in the Lightning locker-room after Tampa Bay edged Chicago 3-2 in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final. Hedman had no real answer then, just like the Blackhawks have no answer for the six-footsix, smooth-skating, two-way defenceman in this series. He’s

Blashill replaces Babcock in Detroit Jeff Blashill was hired Tuesday by the Detroit Red Wings, ending a fairly unsuspenseful coaching search that began when Mike Babcock left to take over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Blashill has coached Detroit’s minor league affiliate in Grand Rapids for the past three seasons, and he was an obvious candidate for the Red Wings once Babcock left. Detroit general manager Ken Holland acknowledged right away that he was going to talk to Blashill about the job, but the Griffins made it to the con-

ference finals in the AHL playoffs. Blashill’s promotion was announced Tuesday. Blashill led Grand Rapids to the Calder Cup in 2013. He says he’d been eyeing the Red Wings’ job since it became clear Babcock’s future was uncertain. A Detroit native, Blashill coached at Western Michigan before joining the Red Wings’ organization. He was an assistant coach for the Red Wings in 2011-12 before taking over at Grand Rapids. the associated press

tain Steven Stamkos said. “He’s been an absolute beast for us out there. Very rare do you see the combination of size and speed and smarts.” Chicago’s Duncan Keith has the speed and smarts, just like

other elite defencemen who led their teams to the Cup. Hedman is more physically imposing, has the kind of long reach that frustrates the Blackhawks and the wherewithal to see plays developing seconds before they do.

In this series Hedman is Tampa’s answer to Keith, the 31-minute-per-night defenceman who has been the Blackhawks’ best player. Hedman, a Conn Smythe candidate, presents a two-sided problem. For one, he and Stralman have for the most part clamped down on Toews’ line, and at the other end he has wreaked havoc with a series-high four assists. The Canadian Press

Aries March 21 - April 20 Don’t just sit there brooding about your problems, get up and do something about them. Better still, forget about them altogether and have fun with your friends. Life is only a trial if you choose to make it a trial.

Cancer June 22 - July 23 You feel trapped, unable to move one way or the other. But who says you have to move? Who says you have to do anything? Most likely the only restrictions in your life are the ones you have placed on yourself.

Libra Sept. 24 - Oct. 23 Something you’ve always believed in will be called into question today, but don’t abandon it yet. It might be the case that someone is deliberately trying to put doubts in your mind — for their own glory and profit, of course.

Capricorn Dec. 22 - Jan. 20 You may have to work with someone you do not much like over the next 24 hours. If you’re smart you’ll hide your feelings and get on with the job. Just because you don’t like them does not mean you can’t work with them.

Taurus April 21 - May 21 If you receive a financial offer of some sort today you must make up your mind about it straight away. If you leave it until tomorrow chances are it won’t be there any more, so say ‘Yes’ or say ‘No’ but say something!

Leo July 24 - Aug. 23 The things you believe in today will not be the things you believe in towards the end of the week. Your views and opinions are about to undergo a major change. Be flexible.

Scorpio Oct. 24 - Nov. 22 Check the small print and scrutinize the details of anything that is put in front of you today. The planets warn there is something there you won’t agree with. It may not be a deliberate error but it could still be costly.

Aquarius Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Avoid making any promises until Mercury, planet of communication, turns direct tomorrow when you will have a far better chance of delivering on them. You can still be enthusiastic but don’t get carried away.

Sagittarius Nov. 23 - Dec. 21 If there is something important you need to say to a partner or relative put it off until tomorrow when Mercury, planet of communication, resumes its normal direction. After that, “I love you” will be a lot easier to say.

Pisces Feb. 20 - March 20 A few words from you could be all it takes to cheer up someone who is depressed. Remind them they still have much to smile about, that life is supposed to be fun. You are, after all, living proof of that fact.

Virgo Aug. 24 - Sept. 23 If a colleague tries to lay the blame for some kind of failure at your door today you must let them know you do not accept their verdict. Joint projects mean joint responsibility: they would soon claim the glory if it was a success.

Traps and locks dust & dirt. Big cleaning for small spaces. Swiffer® Dusters´´ fluffy fibres trap and lock dust that feather dusters can just spread around. The fluffy fibres also change shape to get into nooks and crannies, and dust virtually any surface.

Swiffer® gives cleaning a whole new meaning. © 2015 P&G
