Education Minister David Eggen has directly instructed each school board in Alberta to draft a transgender policy that adheres to provincial law — by April at the latest. In an exclusive interview with Metro, Eggen revealed he sent a letter Thursday to all Alberta boards explaining he expects each to “create the necessary policies or ensure that (current) policies align with the letter and the intent” of the law. That law, the Alberta School Act, was changed when Bill 10 became

law in March. The amended law requires boards to “establish, implement and maintain a policy” that ensures all students and staff are provided a learning environment “that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.” A Metro investigation has revealed the majority of Alberta school boards do not have a policy yet. Eggen said his ministry is drafting guidelines to “provide more guidance” on its expectations of the policies each board is responsible for delivering. “They have the full attention and resources of our ministry to help with the development of policy, and we will work with them over the next few months,” Eggen said. “It’s an interactive process that can help to get the job done.” More coverage, metroNEWS

IN BRIEF CPS investigating shooting in Marlborough Park Calgary police are investigating the city’s latest shooting after one man was rushed to hospital Wednesday evening in a targeted attack over a drug dispute. Detective Andy Nguyen said police were called to a home on the 100 block of Madeira Road N.E. in Marlborough Park just before 9 p.m. Wednesday. He said the victim was shot at multiple times but only sustained minor injuries. The CPS Guns and Gangs Unit continues to investigate. Metro Midnapore home invasion hospitalizes two men A violent home invasion in the city’s southwest early Thursday has left two men hospitalized. Det. Mixed martial artist plans Kickstarter for his invention Aaron Chatha
Metro | Calgary Three years ago, Calgarian Bobby Khunkhun faced a serious problem: the mixed martial artist needed a way to train at home, but every punching bag he owned sent a thunderous roar through the house that would wake his newborn daughter. “I have a bunch of punching bags that I own but I couldn’t use them when my daughter was sleeping or taking a nap,” he said. “I started creating this bag as a solution to that problem.” Khunkhun said his Lightspeed Bag was quiet enough that he could use it while his daughter slept in the next room. He said he spent the last three years developing the bag, entirely on his own, working out of his basement. He went through 20 different versions of the punching bag. “Initially I started with a tennis ball on a string,” he explained. “Because there’s a punching bag you can find in the gym called a slip bag. Basically, it’s a ball on a string. You swing the ball away from you

and wires, before he settled on a lightweight foam. Although it’s light, Khunkhun said it’s built to last. “My daughter is 30 pounds, and I’ve had her hang off of them, so it’s pretty durable,” he said. The bag mounts onto
a ceiling beam but can easily be taken off or re-attached to a plate, allowing it to be quickly put away and save space when not in use. For Khunkhun, who has trained in mixed martial arts for seven years, not only does he get to keep up his passion, but his daughter gets the vital rest she needs. Khunkhun is planning a Kickstarter campaign to launch the bag into the market; more details can be found at lightspeedbag.com.
After two huge animal seizures last week — including the rescue of 35 cats from a car — the Calgary Humane Society said it is over capacity and is encouraging people to come in and adopt. “In two consecutive days last week, we removed numerous animals from each of those cases,” said Brad Nichols, senior manager of animal-cruelty investigations. “One of them was a hoarding situation with 35 cats in a vehicle. The other case was 27 birds removed from a residential property.” The animals are friendly and currently being treated. For the month of November, all cats and select birds will have reduced adoptions fees. Nichols said the Humane Society typically has capacity for 550 to 600 animals but currently is pushing 700 critters. He said animals are still getting the care they require but at the price of additional staff time and organizational resources. Aaron Chatha/Metro

Crumbling concrete under warranty: City Brodie Thomas
Metro | Calgary Concrete curbs near the Peace Bridge are crumbling, but the City of Calgary says it has a fix in the works. The curbs along the pathway to the Peace Bridge are about three years old, according to Doug Marter, manager of planning and development for the city. Problems were noticed within months of construction, but the cause of the damage needed

to be determined. He said independent testing revealed the concrete had been poorly mixed. Workers will spend the winter recasting the curbs offsite and in the spring they will be replaced along the path. Marter said the path will need to be closed while that work is done. Because the concrete was still under warranty, there will be no cost to the city for the replacement. The damaged concrete has no effect whatsoever on the bridge itself, according to Marter.

Reckless violence will not continue: Chaffin Crime
Police service targeting the city’s gangs, guns, says chief Lucie Edwardson
Metro | Calgary The fluidity of Calgary gangs is creating challenges for Calgary police, said new police Chief Constable Roger Chaffin. Chaffin said in a way that he hasn’t seen before, Calgary gangs are more malleable than
ever. “They’re not beholden to each other like in the past; they tend to go to each other by need and they have different skills and different opportunities,” he said. “They tend to move in and out and that creates big challenges that we didn’t see in the past when people tended to stay together out of some sort of code of honour.” Chaffin said CPS are currently focused on five major operations that deal with gun and gang violence in the city, and have several others in the queue waiting to get going, along with 85 other files also
related to guns and gangs. He said police are working on establishing real-time intelligence so they can educate themselves on how to react and deploy resources accordingly, with the goal of putting those responsible for the crimes behind bars. “I want you to be rest assured that the service’s intent in this is to identify the people who are responsible for this, arrest them, put them before the courts and the justice system and to lock them away,” said Chaffin. According to Chaffin there is a group of 50-100 individuals who CPS are focused on.
“These people need to be behind bars, they need to be away from the community, and we need to be in a position so that we can assure everybody that this reckless violence will not continue,” he said. Staff Sgt. Quinn Jacques with the CPS guns and gangs unit said what his unit is finding most difficult is the speed at which problems on the street level are escalating to gun violence. “Criminals bypass all reasonable methods to settling a dispute and they escalate right to guns,” he said. “We saw it again last night and the night before.”

Advocates speak out after murder CRIME
Woman’s death a result of domestic violence: Police Lucie Edwardson
Metro | Calgary
The death of a Calgary woman who is believed to be the victim of domestic violence has advocacy groups speaking out once more. Police and EMS were called to the home on the 0-100 block of Whitmire Bay NE, Tuesday around 3:30 p.m., after there was a report of someone dead inside. The body of Janel Squirrell, 26, was found in the basement of the Whitehorn home and her boyfriend, Leo Harry Pantherbone,
45, of Calgary, is now charged with manslaughter. Police said they believe Squirrell’s death to be the result of domestic violence. Calgary Domestic Violence Collective said the incident is one of many serious domestic violence incidents in Calgary this year and emphasizes the importance of addressing the issue as a community. “Situations of domestic violence are very serious, and as a
community we must unite and work together to support those experiencing abuse, and speak out surrounding this issue,” said Maggie MacKillop, Executive Director, HomeFront. The Calgary Dream Centre, a faith-based recovery organization working to change the lives of Calgary’s most vulnerable, owned the house where the murder took place, and CEO Jim Morrison said they are grieving.

Calgary’s indigenous organizations are applauding the Liberal government’s renaming of the former Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development portfolio to Indigenous and Northern Affairs, though they’re hoping the ministry isn’t all bark and no bite. “I think it’s a real progressive change,” said Christy Morgan, executive director of the Calgary Urban Aboriginal Initiative. “I don’t know if (the name change) will appease everyone, but it’s a term that a lot more people are recognizing and using.” In fact, the department has seen a number of name changes since it was created under the British Crown in 1755, according to Jennifer Pettit, the department chair of humanities and professor of history and indigenous studies at Mount Royal University. In 2011, the Conservatives changed the name of the department of Indian and Northern Affairs to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. Pettit said she thinks the recent name change is a reflection of the Liberal’s platform and the heightened engagement by indigenous voters. She said many see ‘aboriginal’
as a term created by the government to bunch groups of peoples together, adding ‘indigenous’ is becoming increasingly adopted by organizations. Andrea McLandress, president of the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, said indigenous has positive connotations, given its use is part of reclaiming identity. “I see the federal department name change as a sign of respect to the first people’s of Canada,” she said. Many people are still comfortable with the term aboriginal, she said, adding indigenous is still the best generic term. “‘Indigenous’ has an edge to it,” Pettit added. “The United Nation defines (the word) as the traditional occupants of the land affected by colonialism.” Though the name change is symbolic, Morgan said the Liberal’s policy promises are more important. “The government’s delivery still needs to occur,” she said. So is indigenous still the best word? Not exactly, McLandress said. She said it’s always best to call someone by their own individual heritage: Metis, Saulteau, Cree, Dene, etc. And if you don’t know their heritage, it’s always OK to ask, “Where are you from?” she added.

NDP apologizes for invite Alberta’s NDP government has done an about-face over allegations it was selling access to Premier Rachel Notley and her cabinet. Health Minister Sarah Hoffman apologized in the legislature for invitations to an upcoming NDP party fundraiser in Calgary. She says there was an error in the wording of the invitation sent out by the party for a Nov. 26 event at
Stampede Park. In return for a $250 donation, it promised a chance to talk about issues with Notley, cabinet, and MLAs. Just seconds before Hoffman apologized, house leader Brian Mason defended the event under questioning from the Wildrose. Wildrose critic Jason Nixon says it was a clear case of influence peddling, but Mason says it was no such thing. THE CANADIAN PRESS

74% of Alberta schools lack transgender policy metro investigation
Only 13 boards of education have policies in place Aaron Chatha & Braeden Jones Metro | Calgary
A Metro investigation has revealed 45 out of 61 Alberta school boards do not have a standalone policy that protects gender identity and expression from discrimination. That’s just below 74 per cent. “Too much of the policy around trans and queer youth has been up to the specific circumstances of the environment, thus giving those in power the right to decide whether they want to continue to abuse children or not,” said Rebecca Sullivan, director of the women’s studies program at the University of Calgary. Only 13 school boards said they do have a standalone policy, and the rest did not respond to our requests by deadline. Of the 45 that do not have a policy, 22 have said they talked about or are working on a policy. Sullivan said a standard, human-rights based policy is needed to protect LGBTQ students from harm and discrimination. Sullivan believes provincial, or even federal legislation is needed. Transgender policy became prominent in Alberta media when a mother filed a human rights complaint against the Edmonton Catholic School District when her seven-year-old transgender daugh-
In October when Education Minister David Eggen appointed a special facilitator to the Edmonton Catholic School Board, he said he didn’t expect the problems that board experienced to repeat across the province. braeden jones/metro edmonton
When it comes to ethnic and racial discrimination, as well as gender, it’s always the same trend: policy is behind the reality. Joan-Maki Motapanyane
ter was not allowed to use the washroom of her choice, but was told to use a gender-neutral one instead. It was revealed the school board had no explicit policy regarding transgender students, and has had struggled to pass one.
“We will absolutely see a repeat,” said Sullivan “We saw what happened in the Edmonton Catholic School District. They announced that their community by and large believed in abusing children, by denying them the right to go to the bathroom.”
Education Minister David Eggen has asked all the school boards in Alberta to draft a policy in accordance with the law, similar to how all school boards were mandated to ensure gay-straight alliances could be created in schools. A number of school boards Metro talked to said they would welcome a provincial policy. “Simply from the time and resources required to research an area of concern provincially that while not a hot issue in our jurisdiction currently,
could arise at any time,” said Kevin Andrea, superintendent of Northern Gateway Regional. “Some well-researched, balanced direction would be appreciated by smaller school jurisdictions.” Others said they would prefer to handle these issues themselves, at a root level, without government interference that may not be specific to their district’s needs. Jonathan Brower, LGBTQ advocate, said a policy is absolutely needed. “It all starts from elementary,” said Brower. “If you know that the people around you are treated equally, and the school has something set in their policy, then you know they should be seen as equals, right? That’s when, as kids, they absorb most of their information.” Brower said the policy would set the tone for how kids grow up and look at their peers. He said there is more information out there for LGBTQ youth to begin understanding their identity at an early age. Joan-Maki Motapanyane, assistant professor of women’s studies with Mount Royal University, said adoption of these other policies can be slow, especially because transgender youth doesn’t make up a large portion of the population, but the implementation of these policies is historically slower than majority values. “In terms of our educational history in this country, we’ve seen the same thing when it comes to ethnic and racial discrimination, as well as gender,” she said. “It’s always the same trend: policy is behind the reality of peoples lives.”
Sunshine list
Alberta to reveal top earners Ryan Tumilty
Metro | Edmonton Alberta’s “sunshine list” is potentially growing to reveal the salary of almost all people on the public dime, including doctors, nurses, professors and teachers. Justice Minister Kathleen Ganley introduced a new bill Thursday that would expand the current list, which currently provides income numbers for direct government employees, to anyone making more than $125,000 per year who works for a university, Alberta Health Services, or any of the 157 arm’s length agencies or commissions that receive public funding. Board members of those agencies will also have their compensation revealed, regardless of how much they make. “This government is serious about increasing transparency and this bill will show Albertans how their tax dollars are spent,” Ganley said. Cities and school boards will be given the option to create their own lists. “Municipalities and school boards are themselves elected officials who are accountable to the public,” Ganley said. Alberta Medical Association President Dr. Carl Nohr said he expects physicians to raise privacy concerns about the proposed bill, and also worries numbers will be misunderstood. In addition to the salary disclosure, the government announced Thursday it’s reviewing all provincial agencies and boards to determine if they are fulfilling their mandates. “Many good people have and continue to contribute long hours of excellent public service for, often, modest compensations, but it’s time to look at this sector,” said Finance Minister Joe Ceci.

University reviewing code Mount Royal
Concerns over academic freedom called problematic Helen Pike
Metro | Calgary Nearly a week after the controversial Code of Conduct was approved, the Mount Royal University boss has stressed the document can be reviewed, and the review can start now. The Code of Conduct, which was voted on and passed last Monday during a Board of Governors meeting, has been in the works for over a year — all the while considered problematic by the Mount Royal Faculty Association for concerns over academic freedom. President David Docherty said the University was filling an immediate need to comply with legislation and had to pass the document as soon as possible.
After passing a code of conduct with language not all staff agreed on, Mount Royal University is starting the review process early. Jennifer Friesen/for Metro
“Let me be perfectly clear. We had said as an executive we needed to pass the code of conduct to be in compliance with the Alberta Public Agencies Governance act,” said Docherty. “We’d started out with a draft, we’d made chan-

ges, it got to the point where we said we need to pass this document … any policy at Mount Royal is a living document.” He added policy directed the document would be reviewed after a period of two
years, but he said the school doesn’t have to wait that long. Language in the current code of conduct includes a clause requiring employees to exercise judgment in the best interest of the university. Which the faculty association said could force professors to tattle on each other, or put them in danger of overstepping the bounds of academic freedom with fears of being reprimanded under a vague policy. “The association’s aim in participating will be to see a new draft produced by December, and an updated code sent to the Board of Governors for approval early in 2016,” said Marc Schroeder, president of the Mount Royal Faculty Association. “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to continue to make significant improvements.” Schroeder stressed that they are happy to have a review, but noted the faculty association does hold some frustrations with a lengthy process that was passed after they raised major concerns with the document.
school boards Education minister concerned with CBE busing decision claims Minister of Education David Eggen is concerned with claims that the Calgary Board of Education had already reached a decision to move to the controversial congregated school bus stop system before they consulted with parents. “A very important function of school boards is that they are the eyes and ears on the ground in each specific geographic location, that can use their position to listen to the public and develop policy that can work for that specific area,” he said. “If you get that backwards somehow, then that can be a problem.” A CBE statement said there is an upcoming review on transportation, which will be conducted by independent consultants. As well, the CBE is developing a system-wide public engagement model to help them make more informed decisions. This week there are meeting with several parent groups. Aaron Chatha/Metro

living the fashionable life CANDICE WARD FOR METRO
In his first game with the Calgary Stampeders, Jerome Messam quickly won over Stamps fans with his 121-yard rushing performance over his old team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The newest member of the Stampeders runningback corps talks with Metro about his new city, his love of great food, and life outside football. NEW CITY Changing cities and teams right near the end of the season might be difficult for most players, but Messam is excited about the new opportunity. “I just feel blessed to be here — I am happy to be in this city,” says Messam. Since entering the CFL in 2010, Messam has played for the BC Lions, Edmonton Eskimos, Montreal Alouettes, Saskatchewan Roughriders
and, now, the Stampeders – so for him it’s about finding comfort in his new surroundings. “I find comfort in familiar faces, talking to my family a lot back home, and just being in my element and playing football — doing what I love,” says Messam. He also takes comfort in knowing his best friend Zeus – his seven-year-old pitbull – is with him for the next journey. “He is with me everywhere I go,” says Messam. OFF THE FIELD When Messam isn’t breaking records on the field, he can be found walking Zeus and spending time with friends and family back home in Toronto during the off-season. He is also an avid shopper. “I like to think I have a pretty good fashion sense and I like to stay up on the latest

I really don’t like to go out and order something I feel like I could cook well at home, like chicken,” says Messam. And no good steak dinner is complete without a good dessert, with his go-to being apple pie and ice cream.
AFTER CAREER Not all players can have longlasting professional playing careers. For Messam, it is not too early to start planning for his life after football. “After football, I will definitely stay close to the game,” says Messam. “I would like to get into doing stuff like Milt Stegall or
Jock Climie (both with TSN), trying to be analyst or on a panel somewhere.” Like teammate Micah Johnson, he is interested in pursuing music production. “I love playing around with different sounds and learning about the craft of making music and producing beats I just want to continue to grow in that,” says Messam.

urgent health-care facility
Airdrie MLA clashes with minister Lucie Edwardson
Metro | Calgary
Things got heated at Tuesday’s legislative question period, when Airdrie MLA Angela Pitt asked Sarah Hoffman, minister of health, if an urgent healthcare facility for Airdrie was on her priority list. Pitt said the city of Airdrie has been fighting for years to
have an adequate health-care facility that operates 24 hours a day, but said they have yet to see any action. “We have yet to convince somebody who makes these actual decisions that this should be a priority for them,” said Pitt in an interview with Metro, Wednesday. “Yesterday was really disheartening to hear that in the Minister’s opinion, we’re too close to Calgary.”
When asked by Metro where an urgent healthcare facility in Airdrie was on her priority list, Hoffman said in a statement that they’re focused on addressing what the highest needs are in the province. “We want to make evidencebased decisions that ensure Albertans have access to the right care, at the right time, in the right place, for the right investment,” said Hoffman. During the question period
Pitt said she found it frustrating the needs of Airdrie weren’t being considered, especially since a community member had donated land where a facility could be built. But, Hoffman said the next step is an assessment for the greater Calgary region to determine where resources would be best allocated. “This is the first step in determining the capital needs for any community,” she said.
Mark Vazquez-Mackay says he’s hoping to connect the city’s disconnected arts scene for one night. Jeremy Simes/For Metro
Artist hopes event links arts scene Culture
Don’t Look is across the street from Look 2015 Jeremy Simes
For Metro | Calgary Mark Vazquez-Mackay isn’t sure if he’s rejecting or being rejected by Calgary’s art establishment, though he hopes his tongue-in-cheek event connects the seemingly disconnected arts scene. Vazquez-Mackay will open his exhibition — called Don’t Look: Salon du Refusé — at the same time Contemporary Calgary hosts it’s Look 2015 fund raising event. Don’t Look — which will be at Rumble House — is essentially across the street from Look 2015, which will be at the old Science Centre building. He assured the event isn’t meant to be a negative spectacle. Rather, he wants those attending either event to acknowledge those across the road, he said. “It’s not David vs. Goliath — we’re both working towards a better future for the Calgary arts community, which we des-
perately need,” he said. Salon du Refusé — a French phrase — literally translates to “reject of the salon.” The phrase plays on a French exhibition in 1863, called Salon des Refusés. The Salon — an establishment that controlled the Paris’ arts scene — rejected works from the likes of Édouard Manet, so he and others decided to throw their own event. “I chose (the name) because I think there’s this high disconnect between the artists and the establishments,” he said. “Our city is so full with ambition and creativity, so this is an attempt to bridge what large institutions are doing with what the grassroots and small organizations are doing. “I know a lot of artists that have a hard time breaking though, and are kept at the bottom of the hierarchy,” he added. “We just need to break that ceiling — the potential is here.” Don’t Look’s organizers will project a film onto the roof of Rumble House, and VazquezMackay hopes those attending Look 2015 will, in fact, look. “I hope we compliment each other,” he said. Vazquez-Mackay’s work — which mainly involves figure painting — will be showcased Saturday at 7 p.m. at Rumble House, 136 8 Ave. SW.

WWE Hall of Famer will answer fans’ questions Lisa Wilton
Metro | Calgary Jake “The Snake” Roberts was one of the biggest names in 1980s professional wrestling. He could hold his own alongside superstars Hulk Hogan, “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Andre the Giant. Not surprisingly, the WWE Hall of Famer has a trunk full of great stories about his time in the wrestling ring. He’ll tell a lot of those tales when he takes the stage at the Laugh Shop on Monday as part of his 20date Canadian UnSpokeN
WorD TouR. Roberts says he was encouraged to do the one-man show by friends who had heard his stories. “We would sit around the house and I’d tell these stories and they would laugh their butts off,” Roberts recalls. “And they were like, ‘Dude, you have to take this on the road.’ Then I went to see (former WWE wrestler) Mick Foley’s show (Tales From Wrestling Past) and I thought, ‘Well, why not?’” The UnSpokeN WorD ShoW is a fascinating glimpse into the highs and lows of Roberts’ life — from his triumphs in the ring to his battles with drugs and

alcohol and subsequent recovery. “I get to relive my past and the young wrestling fans get to hear stories and ask questions because I’ll be doing a Q&A,” he says. “I’ll let them ask whatever they want. They might not like the answer. I’m brutally honest and truthful because this is close to my heart. “For the non-wrestling fans,

it’s chance to go behind the doors and get to know what was really going on backstage and some of the practical jokes we played on each other.” Roberts — who is relocating to Las Vegas in the new year to launch his own wrestling company — says he’s excited to bring his show through Western Canada. The 60-year-old spent some time in Calgary during his early wrestling years training in The Hart House “Dungeon” with late, legendary trainer Stu Hart. “He knew everything about wrestling,” Roberts says. “At least he knew everything about how to inflict pain. He was Dr. Mengele. He could twist your body in different ways. He had such knowledge and he was glad to share it. It was something you had to do as a wrestler and if you go through it, it was a notch on your belt.”

Singer hits Jackpot scene yyz
Making all the right moves for her career Lisa Wilton
Metro | Calgary It’s been a life-changing year for singer Jocelyn Alice. In February, the Calgarian bid adieu to her hometown and moved to Toronto. A few months later, her Lorde-esque single — Jackpot — was being played on radio stations across the country, landing her a gold record. Written with fellow Calgary musician Hello Moth, Jackpot has recently become a hit in Buffalo, New York and Alice hopes the single will take off in other American markets. Now living in Vancouver, Alice plays Saturday at The Gateway at SAIT. Metro caught up her: What led to your move to Toronto? I needed to stretch. I felt that I had lived all of the ways that I could have in Calgary, musically speaking. I worked with a lot of the artists here and I played at most of the venues. I was ready to feel a little discombobulated again. I felt very comfortable here. Calgary is the place I grew up and I have so many people I can rely on. I knew there was some personal growth I wasn’t going to be able to find unless I was just totally in a new place. It seems a good decision,
with Jackpot doing so well. Everyone thinks that moving to Toronto had something to do with it. But that’s really not the case. I did go to Toronto for music and I made some great connections. But the radio thing actually started in Vancouver and trickled across Canada. I went to Breakout West in Winnipeg last year and a couple of my friends and my lawyer were there and they were like, ‘Jackpot is an amazing song.’ So I decided to release it for my Kickstarter campaign. It got picked up at Hot 107 in Edmonton, but then it got dropped because no other stations picked it up. Then I got a call in May from Virgin Radio and they said I was going to get added to 60 stations across Canada. How did that feel? I celebrated, but I was weary because in this business there are these amazing things that happen, but they don’t always amount to much. They don’t change your life in any way. But I went on a radio tour in support of the song and then it kind of snowballed and it went gold and started charting on Billboard. It’s beyond me. It really has utterly changed my life. How did you hook up with Hello Moth? The first time I saw him was at an open mic night at Café Koi and I turned to (bassist and musical collaborator) Lisa Jacobs and said, ‘I’m working with this guy. He reminds me of MGMT. He is an alien.’ He’s the weirdest, most creative genius.

holiday season brings out the best in the people. So why wouldn’t we want to extend that? We spend ten months of the year ignoring each other on the sidewalks, elevators and standing in line. But put on Jingle Bells in the
background and all of a sudden we’re wishing each other Merry Christmas and making friendly small talk. Plus, find me a small business in Calgary that doesn’t love the added shopping enthusiasm that comes with
the holiday spirit. Should we criticize our entrepreneurs for trying to capitalize on that? Worse yet, should we chide Calgarians because they want to start holiday shopping before November 11th? To me, I think we can
actually have it both ways. I can start listening to Celine Dion’s These Are The Special Times Christmas album, while still remembering the sacrifice our veterans both made and are still making. I can’t honestly imagine any

They call it the “Christmas creep.” It’s an expression for the phenomenon of celebrating Christmas earlier and earlier every year. The most common complaint is that Christmas has now encroached on Remembrance Day and we should wait until after November 11th until we start decking the halls with boughs of holly. The commercialism of Christmas is of course hard to ignore. And I get it. More and more businesses are trying to take advantage of the “holiday spirit.” But, isn’t that okay? Aside from those few arduous hours between opening presents and waiting for Christmas dinner to be served, the

Sure, if you decide to not attend a Remembrance Day ceremony because you want to take advantage of the malls being quieter before 11:30 a.m. Then, yeah, you’re being disrespectful. Or if you decide not to get a poppy because you’re saving all your change to buy Christmas presents, then yes, you’re definitely being disrespectful. But if you’re buying a peppermint latte on November 10th, no, you’re not being rude. You just like peppermint lattes. I’ve always thought Canada did a fantastic job honouring our veterans on November 11th. But unlike Christmas, honouring our veterans should and can be done year-round. We can do it while we’re listening to Celine, while we’re sipping our peppermint lattes, and watching the fireplace channel. If you think we should be doing more for our veterans, don’t blame Christmas.

Among other things, the rules would allow backbenchers to trigger a leadership review and potentially to oust their leader altogether. But at their first caucus meeting Thursday, Liberal MPs chose unanimously to defer a decision on the rules until party members could weigh in on the matter at a national convention scheduled for late May. “A number of the elements that were proposed in the Reform Act, in our view, weaken the role of the membership of the party,” government House leader Dominic LeBlanc said following the caucus meeting. “Our leader was not selected simply by a vote in caucus. Liberals to reinstate long-form census The portrait of Canada is being restored. Just a day after taking office, the Liberal government announced Thursday that the mandatory long-form census — axed by the Conservatives in 2010 — will be reinstated for the 2016 census. “Today, Canadians are reclaiming their right to accurate and more reliable information,” said Navdeep Bains, the newly named minister of Innovation,
Science and Development. With the next census, communities will “once again have access to high-quality data they require,” said Bains, the MP for Mississauga-Malton. Minister fired from cabinet provincial politics
N.S. MLA failed to appear in court to testify in assault case Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil says Environment Minister Andrew Younger has been relieved of his duties and kicked out of the governing Liberal caucus. Thursday night’s announcement came after Younger didn’t show up to testify at a trial for a woman who was accused of assaulting him. Younger says he didn’t appear in court because of a law that states sitting members of the legislature cannot be called to testify in civil and criminal
matters without being asked to waive the exemption. The judge dropped the charge against Tara Gault, who pleaded not guilty to the charge stemming from an alleged assault on or about Oct. 22, 2013, the day the Liberal government took power after the last provincial election. McNeil says Younger did not give him accurate information about the situation and he wanted to make sure Nova Scotians have not been misled. He says he has lost confidence in Younger. “There’s a level of trust, if your employer was asking questions, they would expect you to give forthright (answers),” McNeil told a hastily called Thursday evening news conference. “Unfortunately that wasn’t the case.” The Canadian Press

Bomb threats made by teens Four teens from western Quebec charged over threats against schools in their area now are accused in connection with a spate of bomb threats against schools in Quebec and Ontario earlier this week. Quebec provincial police Capt. Guy Lapointe said Thursday that each of the teens now faces charges of uttering threats, conspiracy and conveying false messages. They were charged at the provincial courthouse in Gatineau, Que., across the river from Ottawa. Lapointe says no explosive devices were found in the search of nearly 80 primary and secondary schools and junior colleges after threatening emails were sent Tuesday. The teens — three boys and a girl aged 16 and 17 years old — were arrested Wednesday on mischief charges. Former environment minister Andrew Younger. The Canadian Press

Bombing by mistake is ‘hard to believe’ Wounded Taliban fighters were being treated in a Doctors Without Borders hospital in northern Afghanistan that was bombed by U.S. forces last month, but there were no armed men or fighting in the area at the time, the charity said Thursday, as it released the results of an internal probe into the incident. The report by the international medical charity,
known by its French acronym MSF, confirmed that U.S. forces had the exact coordinates of the clinic before launching an aerial assault on Oct. 3 that killed 30 people, including doctors and patients. The bombing lasted for more than an hour, during which time “patients burned in their beds, medical staff were decapitated and lost limbs, and others were shot
by the circling AC130 gunship while fleeing the burning building,” the report says. President Barack Obama apologized for the attack. The U.S. military said the airstrike, requested by Afghan forces, was a mistake. But MSF general director Christopher Stokes said “a mistake is quite hard to believe and understand.” The report, based on interviews
with around 60 MSF staff, confirmed earlier accounts by the group. The associated press

EU: Migrant figures rise Global Politics
Nations want flexibility in spending during crisis The European Union is predicting that 3 million migrants could arrive in the 28-nation bloc by the end of next year, with the refugee emergency already proving a stern test of EU border and reception capacities. The arrivals are imposing costs for shelter, rescue operations and border security, but the EU estimates that the refugees are likely to bring economic benefits within a few years, notably in Germany, one of the preferred destinations for many people. EU autumn economic forecasts released on Thursday show that based on current migrant entries and a “technical assumption” about fu-

ture flows, arrival rates for migrants are unlikely to slow before 2017. Despite the figures of refugee increases, the European Commission predicted that the population across the 28 EU nations would only rise by about 0.4 per cent. No obvious impact on employments levels is likely, it said. Those nations, among others, want the EU to apply its budget rules with flexibility, taking into account Europe’s biggest refugee emergency in well over half a century, and avoid reprimanding member states for excessive spending and deficits. A321-200 plane had crashed. British and U.S. officials, guided primarily by intelligence intercepts and satellite imagery, have suggested gingerly it might have been the work of the extremist Islamic State group and its affiliates in the Sinai. President Barack Obama said the U.S. was taking “very seriously” the possibility that a bomb brought down the plane. His comments, in an interview with a Seattle radio station, followed an earlier statement by White House spokesman Josh Earnest, who said the U.S. can’t rule out the possibility of terrorism. The Islamic State group, which has not generally pursued “spectacular” attacks outside its base in Syria, has claimed responsibility for bringing down the plane, but Russian and Egyptian officials say the claim was not credible. Researchers hope strains thrive in newly harsh oceans Scientists at a research centre on Hawaii’s Coconut Island have embarked on an experiment to grow “super coral” that they hope can withstand the hotter and more acidic oceans that are expected with global warming. The quest to grow the hearty coral comes at a time when researchers are warning about the dire health of the world’s reefs, which create habitats for marine life, protect shorelines and drive tourist economies. When coral is stressed by changing environmental conditions, it expels the symbiotic algae that live within it and the animal turns white or bright yellow, said Ruth Gates, director of the Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii. If the organisms are unable

Gates estimated that about 60 to 80 per cent of the coral in Kaneohe Bay has bleached this year. “The bleaching has intensified and got much more serious,” said Gates of the coral around the bay. Gates and her team are taking the coral to their centre on the
29-acre isle and slowly exposing them to slightly more stressful water. They are also taking resilient strains and breeding them with one another, helping perpetuate those stronger traits. “We’ve given them experiences that we think are going to raise their ability to survive stress,” Gates said. Weak loonie shouldn’t mean staying home Travel
Tour firms offer bonuses for quick sale of packages A weaker loonie means the price for Canadians to escape the snow and ice for the warmth of the sun this winter is going to be more costly than it has been in recent years. But travel experts say that planning ahead and starting your search for the perfect beach holiday now will save you money. Travel agent Omar Guechtal of the Flight Centre travel agency says booking early is the surest way to save this year. He says tour companies have been looking to sell out their packages as early as possible. “So what they’ve done is they’ve incentivized their packages with early booking bo-

Quebec will no longer host an oil export terminal for TransCanada’s controversial Energy East Pipeline, the Calgary-based company announced Thursday. When we legalize pot, let’s be chill about it Diane Baker Mason For Metro
In the opening scene of the 1994 film Pulp Fiction, two affable hired killers discuss the legalization of marijuana. Vincent (the well-travelled one) tries to distill the complicated Dutch hash-bar laws by describing pot as “legal but not 100 per cent legal.” You can own it, he explains, and you can smoke it, but you can’t buy or sell it. His companion

is baffled. Why does it have to be so complicated? Why indeed? While this scene from a 20-year-old movie remains applicable to many Canadians’ contemporary understanding of cannabis users (that they are criminals using a dangerous drug), most Canadians believe that pot should be legalized. Many point to the relative harmlessness of the drug and to its many medical uses. Those benefits were recognized in Canada by the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations issued by Health Canada in 2013, a narrow decriminalization that took years of legislative caterwauling to bring into force. Since then, there’s been no serious chance of further decriminalization. At least, until now. Now that we have our
shiny new prime minister, the issue of legalizing pot is again being passed around. Legal, regulated use is now only a matter of time, although Trudeau cannot say how much time. When asked recently, he indicated it could take years to draft, create and implement the new regulatory scheme. After decades of debate — during which many other jurisdictions globally have decriminalized and even completely legalized cannabis — are we in for another long wait? Probably. Legalizing pot is not simply a matter of amending the Criminal Code, as Pierre Trudeau’s government did in 1968, removing prohibitions against homosexuality and birth control. Pot smoking has an intoxicating effect (obviously), and there
do need to be controls on its use and sale. The nature and scope of the controls need to be identified and legislated. Then there is the tax revenue: an entire legislative scheme of collection, reporting and distribution. There’s far more to it than just declaring pot to be “legal but not 100% legal.” Sound, enforceable legislation will take thought, care and time. Legalization is on the new government’s agenda. At this point, there is no reason to keep asking the PM when pot will be legalized. The legislation will come in time. In the meantime, we should all just chill out. And if you have difficulty chilling? Well, I know a guy...

It was an early ah-ha moment, and I continued to eat bananas before trying to touch my toes to my head until I lost interest. But it was a sad day, years later, when I ate a banana and broke my back. So, Justin Trudeau may have a bachelor’s degree in literature from McGill and one in education from the University of British Columbia, but he didn’t win by investing in his education: he won by investing in being a Trudeau and then running a damn fine campaign. That’s not to say there’s nothing of benefit to a banana, or an arts degree. In fact, Trudeau’s education appears to be playing a role in his leadership style. Take his exhaustive attention to ensuring a diversity of voices — plurality being an ethic at the heart of liberal arts — via the most diverse cabinet we’ve ever seen. And before you scream “Quota!” let’s note that pundits are generally cheering the ministers’ depth of experience in their respective portfolios, bemoaning only — if anything
— that some lack experience in politics. Take also Trudeau’s keen sense of dramatic scenesetting. The tedium of a swearing-in ceremony (watching 30 people repeat the same words and shake the same hands) became a jaunty celebration for the masses gathered outside Rideau Hall, drawing comparisons to the Kennedys’ Camelot. If it is just political propaganda, it’s of the public-inclusive, liberalarts variety. He made the connection himself, to school-aged kids, telling them his education degree informed his plans to “listen as much as he speaks” and be a mentor-prime minister, helping the cabinet members and Canadians “solve those challenges and get their answers.” Of course, personality informs leadership. And it’s also not always true that degrees predict a prime minister’s leadership style. Last time, we got an economist who ran the country based on ideology and hated data so much that he cut the long-form census and hollowed out science libraries. But don’t worry: the census is back. Which means that if you do happen to have an arts degree, and you do wonder what that means for your career prospects over time, just keep an eye on Statistics Canada. It’ll be tracking that.

While most people would say Sean Connery made the best 007, Richard Crouse’s vote goes to Roger Moore. Daniel Craig is also a popular choice, while 1990s leading man Pierce Brosnan seems to be a less popular choice with the general public. handouts
Who made the best Bond? Movie stars
People’s favourite 007 often the one they saw first Richard Crouse
For Metro Canada Who’s your favourite James Bond? This weekend Daniel Craig suits up again, taking his fourth spin as the super spy in Spectre. The film’s overseas reviews have been very strong and it will likely dominate the weekend’s box office but who among us would call Craig the best Bond? I have a theory that the Bond
nearest and dearest to your heart is the first 007 you saw projected on the big screen. Popular consensus tells us that Sean Connery, who played the role in six films spanning 1962 To 1971 and then once again in 1983’s non-officially sanctioned Never Say Never Again, is the best Bond. As cool as Connery was he isn’t my top of the pops. Dr. No, the first 007 movie, came out before I was born and Connery more or less permanently parked his Aston Martin around the time I entered grade two. The Bond that made the biggest impression on me was Roger Moore. I know critically speaking he wasn’t the most beloved Bond. Pauline Kael once wrote about him, “Roger Moore is dutiful and passive as Bond; his clothes are neatly pressed

and he shows up for work, like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension.” I also know that hardcore spy fans considered Moore too well-mannered and pleasant to be effective, but he was my first, and I guess the first cut is the deepest because I still have a fondness for his breezy take on the super agent. But that’s just me. To get a broader picture I did a highly scientific Double-Blind
Bond Peer Reviewed In House Clinical Trial (in other words I asked my Facebook and Twitter friends) to determine the world’s favourite 007 portrayer. The contenders were Connery, George Lazenby, Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Craig — everyone who has played Bond in one of the 24 officially sanctioned 007 movies. Several contributors brought up others like Barry Nelson, who played James Bond in a 1954 television adaptation of
Casino Royale. Also mentioned were David Niven’s turn as Bond in 1967’s Casino Royale and another actor who has never played 007. “Clive Owen,” suggested one poster, “once they get around to casting him in the next one.” After eliminating the unofficial 007s and non-Bonds a team of experts (OK, it was just me reading through the posts as Live and Let Die played on the TV behind me) sifted through the results. Pollsters said Brosnan Is Not Enough to ’90s Bond Pierce Brosnan who came in dead last with just 1.9 per cent of the vote. “I liked Pierce Brosnan because he embodied all the others combined,” wrote one positive poster. “Charm, humour, ruthlessness, cunning.” Timothy Dalton earned 3.9
per cent with one respondent saying, “If there really was an agent who was an assassin with a licence to kill ... it would be him.” At 9.8 per cent, George Lazenby fared better than Brosnan and Dalton even though he only made one 007 film. My favourite Bond came in third with 15.6 per cent, just behind Daniel Craig’s 21.5 per cent. “Craig gets me wanting to watch whereas the others are placeholders,” wrote a Facebook friend, “Sorry.” By far and away, Sean Connery was the winner with a whopping 39.2 per cent of the vote. This comment seems to sum up the reason why people like him. “Sean Connery because Sean Connery!” Who is your favourite Bond? Chime in at @metropicks.

Toni gets teary eyed Miss You Already aims to bob along at a buoyant, lively pace even while staring intently at the reality of a cancer diagnosis. Toni Collette’s Milly flashes bartenders and commandeers cabs for impromptu roadtrips, while also dealing frankly with hair loss, life-altering surgery and sudden bouts of nausea. Director Catherine Hardwicke recalled when her fath-
er had cancer he still made “wicked jokes, even at the last minute.” She and Collette talked to cancer survivors to ensure they were getting other details right, and they were validated by the response of those who have seen the film. Still, the movie is definitely a three-hankie weeper. Even Collette can’t help crying when talking about her character,
Milly, the former wild-child mother of two whose world shatters when she’s diagnosed with breast cancer. “Every time — I’m going to start crying thinking about it, sorry — every time we got to the scene where Milly has to tell her daughter goodbye, I just couldn’t (do) it,” said Collette, mom of a son and daughter, wiping away tears. “It still
Drew is all grown up Drew Barrymore gets excited about ideas, work, memories and friends, drops an occasional F-bomb, adores her kids, “these baby girls who are everything in my universe” and wishes “every billboard in the world” carried the message that life begins at 40. In September, the morning after Catherine Hardwicke’s dramedy Miss You Already had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Barrymore praised Miss You Already costar Toni Collette, who plays self-absorbed wild child Milly to Barrymore’s rock-steady Jess, two longtime girlfriends dealing with motherhood, relationships and unexpected tragedy. Miss You Already opens in theatres today. “I feel like I’ve been like Milly in my life at some points, but I’m much more like Jess now in my life,” says Barrymore. Her oftentumultuous childhood led to rebellious teenage and young adult years. It’s all out there; her 1990 autobiography Little Girl Lost, details everything. “Little Girl Lost is a letme-try-to-put-my-life-backtogether written by, honestly, another man (Todd Gold). He did the typing, I did the talking,” says Barrymore. She’s written her own story now, a series of essays and reflections on various stages of her life called Wildflower. tote bag, the pages dog-eared from proofreading. “I think you will be very surprised,” Barrymore says of Wildflower. “It’s a shuffled deck. It goes from (age) 5 to 35 to 7 to 18.” Married since 2012 to art consultant Will Kopelman, the couple has two daughters: Olive, soon to be 3, and Frankie, 17 months. Since motherhood she’s pulled back from acting to focus on family. “I can’t tell you the beauty of how much room that makes for other things,” Barrymore says of stepping away from the “5 a.m. to midnight” world of acting. “It makes room for me to be the kind of parent I want to be.” But she does occasionally say yes, even if, as with Miss You Already, the timing isn’t ideal. “That’s why I was so angry when (Miss You Already) came my way,” Barrymore says. “I had just had my second daughter, Frankie, and I was like, ‘I can’t even read this. How am I going to do this?’” Making a film that was “such a love story for women and all being done by women, I got really drawn into what that would be,” Barrymore said. “And maybe my girls when they’re older can watch this and the whole womanly aspect of it, (which) felt really safe and appropriate for where I was at that moment in my life.”

THE TV DINNER Jessica AllEn
“Friends can throw down with each other in the most amazing way, and recover in a different way than lovers.”
I was part of a chain of swollen-eyed, wet-sleeved viewers who exited the theatre after a September screening of Miss You Already, a film about two best friends who cope with infertility, infidelity and a cancer diagnosis. Part of me felt angry, like I’d just been emotionally manipulated. And, having seen movies like Love Story, Terms of Endearment, Steel Magnolias and Beaches, I should have known better. The other part just wanted to run up to the closest stranger and say, “Hold me!” But don’t go see Miss You Already, which opens on Fri-
day, just because you need a good cry. See it because Toni Colette, as the wild free spirit, Milly, and Drew Barrymore, as the more firmly anchored Jess, deliver exceptional performances of their flawed, complicated characters. See it because there’s been plenty of talk about gender inequality in Hollywood but here’s a movie starring two women, directed by a woman, written by a woman, about women. “A very long female friendship is as profound as a relationship with your children and your spouse,” Barrymore recently told the New York Times, “and yet it’s really given third credit. Friends can throw down with each other in the most amazing way, and recover in a different way than lovers.” Truth. If Simon told me that I had two weeks to lose

We send encouraging texts. She reached her goal months ago. But I still have those four pounds. (Believe me: I could stand to lose more, but being thin would be offbrand for me.) It’s crunch time and she’s had to resort to tough love, like suggesting I cut out at least 200 calories a day by not drinking wine with dinner.
TV PREMIERE That’s the stupidest (mostreasonable) thing I’ve ever heard. Wine isn’t my problem. Neither is breakfast (oatmeal) or lunch (salad.) It’s dinner, mostly because I eat two of them. While I was working on my miss-you-already-pizzaand-pasta-meal-plan for the week ahead, I leafed through The French Women Don’t Get Fat Cookbook, written by Mireille Guiliano. I decided to make her recipe for roasted sea bream with vegetables. It’s simplicity sounded too good to be true: toss chopped onion, potato, yellow pepper and tomato in olive oil, salt and pepper, and bake. Add the fish on top with some lemon and bake a little longer. Serve with fresh cilantro sprinkled on top. It was both delicious and satisfying. Like clockwork, we got up after finishing our first plate to refill in the kitchen. That’s when it occurred to me: the recipe was for four people, not two. French women don’t get fat because they don’t have a second dinner.

DC Comics fans may have to wait streaming
Time Warner CEO hints at delays for VOD subscribers Fans of superhero shows based in the DC Comics universe like The Flash, Arrow and Gotham might have to wait a lot longer for past seasons’ episodes to come to Netflix and Hulu. Jeff Bewkes, the chief executive of DC-owner Time Warner Inc., told analysts on a conference call Wednesday that the company is reconsidering whether to license series just a season old to such services, known as subscription video-ondemand services. There are eight DC-based shows on TV right now, including Supergirl, which launched on CBS last week. He said that the reconsideration could push licensing of those shows out “to a multi-year period” similar to traditional syndication. That means roughly four years after a show first airs on TV. Bewkes also referenced the three-year delay on shows from Time Warner’s HBO reach-

industry. “Some of the media executives are looking at Netflix as a digital distributor who has gained too much power,” he
said. “They are thinking, look, maybe we should keep our most valuable content inside the traditional pay TV ecosystem, which is the golden goose.” DiClemente speculated the shift could mean that pay TV providers like DirecTV and Comcast would soon be able to offer back episodes for the entire current season to customers in on-demand libraries, rather than just the most recent five episodes. The comments came after Time Warner Inc. reported thirdquarter earnings early Wednesday that disappointed investors. While revenue grew 5 per cent to $6.6 billion, topping the $6.5 billion expected by analysts polled by FactSet, and adjusted earnings of $1.25 beat predictions of $1.09 per share, its earnings outlook of $5.25 per share for fiscal 2016 fell short of expectations for $5.60. The company blamed foreign exchange headwinds and greater investment in programming for the forecast shortfall. Time Warner shares fell $5.19, or 6.7 per cent, to $72.09 in afternoon trading. Its shares have fallen more than 15 per cent so far this year.

Bond songs that finished second Slugline
Music history is littered with a long trail of 007 rejects Alan Cross
For Metro Canada Spectre, the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise, has its North American premiere today. As usual, the film begins with an OTT action sequence (shot with 1,500 extras in Mexico City) before segueing into Sam Smith’s Writing on the Wall and the opening titles. It’s rumoured his song, written in half an hour with collaborator Jimmy Napes, beat out submissions by Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Muse, Radiohead (the bookies’ favourite) and half a dozen others. Having your song chosen as a theme in the most successful movie franchise is a big honour, not to mention lucrative.
Sam Smith’s Writing on the Wall is the official song of Spectre. He was rumourred to have beat out the likes of of Lana Del Rey, Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Muse, Radiohead (the bookies’ favourite) and half a dozen others. handout
Smith’s Writing became the first Bond theme to reach No. 1 in the U.K., something that even Paul McCartney couldn’t manage with Live and Let Die (the BEST Bond theme ever. Don’t even try
to argue with me.) Del Rey, Sheeran, Florence et al have joined a long list of Bond theme also-rans. Rejected Bond songs would make an interesting album.
NE RENTALS
Debbie Harry’s submission for For Your Eyes Only (1981) was passed over Sheena Easton’s song of the same name, which just happened to be co-written by Bill Conti, the composer of
the film’s score. Alice Cooper really wanted the song gig for The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) but he should have probably thrown in more lyrical references to the movie. He lost out to
Lulu who had her song written and arranged by John Barry, who scored the whole film. In retrospect, it would have been much cooler to hear Johnny Cash sing over the opening credits of Thunderball (1965) instead of Tom Jones, but at the time, Cash’s image didn’t exactly scream James Bond. He was in good company, though. Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey also had their songs rejected. There was a ton of competition for Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) with KD Lang, Pulp, The Fixx, Saint Etienne and Swan Lee all submitting songs for consideration but they all lost to Sheryl Crow. Other Bond losers include, Laura Branigan (Octopussy, 1983), Ace of Base (Goldeneye, 1995) and Straw (The World Is Not Enough, 1999) and Shirley Bassey (again, this time for Quantum of Solace, 2008). There are also stories of Bond flirting by the Pet Shop Boys, The Pretenders and even the Beach Boys. So these songs are gone forever, right? Not a chance. As with most things, what might have been is a just a YouTube search away.

The behind-the-scenes drama on the Spectre set included the secretive script being leaked in the Sony hack. handout
The off-screen Bond drama Spectre
If you don’t like problems, don’t become a film producer Before James Bond could even get himself into his first pickle, a shadowy international threat loomed. About a week into shooting Spectre, James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson got some bad news. Not only had a draft of the highly secretive script been leaked in the infamous Sony hack, but it came along with a
slew of private communications about the film, highlighting its third act problems, multiple rewrites, ballooning budget and one very significant spoiler. Broccoli and Wilson didn’t find this out from the Internet or even Sony — the distributor and co-financier on Spectre. They read about it in a newspaper. With phone lines and email servers down, they couldn’t even get in touch with their partners in the immediate aftermath. “It was a bit tricky for us,” Broccoli acknowledged. But beyond making sure the copyrighted script was taken offline, she said they essentially just proceeded with making

He and his step-sister Broccoli were in the capital to attend a premiere of Spectre, the 24th in the 53-year-old film series, which bows in North America this Friday. The purported drama that the hacked emails exposed is no more or less than they’ve experienced on any other film in the franchise, noted Broccoli in the phone interview. “They’re challenging films to make because of the size of what we do,” she said. “I always

say, if you don’t like problems, don’t become a film producer.” Spectre certainly doesn’t skimp on size. The film, which finds the martini-swilling spy on a multi-continent quest, opens with a complicated tracking shot in the streets of Mexico City for the Day of the Dead parade, featuring over 1,500 extras dressed and painted to perfection. It required 1,500 unique costumes, 75 costumers, five months of preparation, two helicopters and police escorts for the buses used to transport the extras. And that’s only one of the film’s exotic set pieces. There’s also the 400 tons of man-made snow that they had to use in
Austria, the 18 nights they spent shooting a car chase in Rome, and the sand storms and 113-degree temperatures they found in Erfoud, Morocco. The film’s budget is reported to be near $250 million. But Bond is big business and the series has been on an upswing. The last film, Skyfall, was produced for a reported $150-$200 million and became the highest grossing Bond film ever with over $1.1 billion in ticket sales worldwide. Spectre sees the return of Skyfall director Sam Mendes and star Daniel Craig in his fourth film as 007. the associated press
One of the world’s greatest spies was an operative for England with an affinity for martinis, a suave rapport with elite power players, and an uncanny ability to infiltrate and eliminate threats. This isn’t the fictional James Bond we’re talking about, but the real-life Sir William Stephenson — a quiet Canadian code-named Intrepid who many believe inspired author Ian Fleming to create his over-the-top British spy hero. “Without doubt, Fleming’s idea of James Bond is based on Sir William,” says Cord Hart, a former CIA operative and U.S. Army colonel who got to know Stephenson through intelligence circles in the early ‘80s. With the latest instalment in the bombastic 007 franchise, Spectre, hitting theatres Friday, descendants and admirers of the late Winnipeg-born war hero say Stephenson’s impressive exploits are too little known. “I always tell people he’s the most famous Winnipegger of all time,” says Heartland Travel and Tours owner Don Finkbeiner, whose tours include a stop at a bronze lifesize statue of Stephenson. the canadian press

Alice in Wonderland
Back through the looking glass they go
Alice Through the Looking Glass opens May 27, 2016. Handout
“You’ve been gone too long, Alice” intones Alan Rickman’s blue caterpillar in the first teaser trailer for Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass. Mia Wasikowska returns as Alice, summoned back to Lewis Carroll’s loopy world with its batty characters framed in a mission to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) by turning back the hands of time. “Friends cannot be neglected,” Alice is told, as the bereft-looking
Hatter is seen standing beside a burning house. Butterflies and ticking clocks seem common themes, especially with the introduction of a new villain, Sacha Baron Cohen as Time. Anne Hathaway returns as the White Queen, and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. But Tim Burton, who directed 2010’s Alice in Wonderland is producing this time, and James Bobin (The Muppets) is in the director’s chair. Torstar News Service

Remember his name Blacklist
Trumbo tells the story of Hollywood’s darkest hour The subpoena came like a death sentence. Dalton Trumbo, the famed Hollywood screenwriter, knew what it meant when he was officially summoned to appear before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. He knew they would pry into his political beliefs and slander him as a Soviet operative. And he knew that he would refuse their invasion, protest their witch hunt and be jailed for doing so. After the subpoena, came a race to prepare for the coming storm: sell his family’s house, finish what work he could and, as he said, “get ready to be a nobody.” Once erased from movies, Trumbo’s name is back in theatres — and this time, it’s not below the title but right in it. Trumbo, starring Bryan Cranston, resurrects the darkest chapter in Hollywood history — the blacklist — and celebrates one of the men the movie industry once tragically shunned. “To watch it turn around, to watch him go from villain to hero, is fascinating,” says Mitzi Trumbo, the 70-year-old daughter of the screenwriter. During the decade-long blacklist, studios refused to hire any of the so-called Hollywood Ten — those who, like Trumbo, refused
to co-operate with the HUAC, which was acting in the grip of Cold War paranoia. The period — “a time of evil,” Trumbo called it — has occasionally been the backdrop for movies, most notably Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were and Martin Ritt’s The Front. But Trumbo, which opens Friday, is the first major release to tell the story through its actual people. Screenwriter John McNamara believes it’s long overdue. “This is the only important story Hollywood has to tell about itself,” he says. McNamara’s first encounter with the blacklist was decades ago as a student at New York University. When he told screenwriter professor Ian McLellan Hunter that he liked his 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday, Hunter responded: “I didn’t write that movie. My friend Dalton Trumbo did.” Trumbo, who also wrote the novel Johnny Got His Gun, was one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters for years. In the time he was blacklisted, Trumbo secretly wrote under pseudonyms and fronts. Both his Roman Holiday and The Brave One won Oscars without his name on it. The blacklist began to break when director Otto Preminger announced he would credit Trumbo for 1960’s Exodus. Kirk Douglas did the same for that year’s Spartacus, which President John F. Kennedy crossed picket lines to see. “It’s a repressed memory of Hollywood,” says director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents). “It’s not a story that gets told a lot around here.” The Associated Press

ADAPTATIONS AS TRUE TO THEIR ORIGINS AS THE PEANUTS MOVIE Not every adaptation of a show stays faithful. With The Peanuts Movie hitting theatres — and in a beautifully exact (if high-def) simulacrum of the strip’s storied TV specials, complete with actual kids doing the voices — here’s a look at other movies that got it right MATT PRIGGE/METRO NEW YORK
And Now for Something Completely Different (1971) Source: Monty Python’s Flying Circus
As a troupe and individually, Monty Python made several landmark films that kept the spirit of their experimental sketch show without actually being them. But their first movie was exactly like the show. In fact it was simply a best-of sketch cavalcade, with greatest hits (the parrot sketch, The Lumberjack Song, Upper-Class Twit of the Year, etc.) re-shot, and with no laugh-track. The reason? They wanted to invade America and no one had heard of them. Monty Python and the Holy Grail would take care of that better than their cinematic debut, but it’s still a fine entrypoint for newbs.
The Naked Gun’ (1988)
Source: Police Squad!
Doing a film of Police Squad! made sense: The show, which ran for only six episodes in 1982, found David and Jerry Zucker plus Jim Abraham (a.k.a. ZAZ) trying to do for TV what they had done with Airplane! on film. In fact, it was the quick jokes and never-ceasing sight gags that got it yanked from the air; as one exec infamously said, it didn’t work because it required viewers actually pay attention. So back to film they went, keeping pretty much everything but adding big (or, well, biggish) names like George Kennedy, Priscilla Presley, Ricardo Montalban and O.J. Simpson, who spends the film either physically abused or hospitalized.

South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) Source: South Park
There’s tons of swearing, a couple of big-name cameo voices, a barrage of musical numbers and even a couple effects that are more than two guys working with construction paper. But the South Park movie, which hit theatres in the midst of the show’s third season, is basically the same thing, only better than usual. Indeed, if it did anything it established that the show was no fluke, and that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone had a true, unique angle on America, repression, hypocrisy and anything else they saw fit to satirize. After this the show would be even more giddy about tackling hot button topics, to all of society’s betterment.

Like the South Park movie, the inevitable Jackass movies were bigger and raunchier but essentially the same thing. In this case, the films are mere conveyor belts of gross-out stunts and body trauma, exploring what the physique can take or how far the squad members will go in the pursuit of their, um, craft. Not that they were simply TV on movie screens: by the third we get dildos flying out of the screen in beautiful 3D — surely one of the more original uses of a technology too often used for the truly crass and lowest common denominator.

Jones tells her own story for a change curling
Halifax curler shares her life on and off rink in new book Kristen Lipscombe Metro | Halifax
Colleen Jones usually tells other people’s stories. So she was at first hesitant when asked to let readers into her own life, but eventually started typing away at a twoyear side project that resulted in her newly released book, Throwing Rocks at Houses: My Life In And Out Of Curling. “I wasn’t crazy about telling my story,” the 55-year-old Canadian curler and broadcaster
admitted Monday by phone from Winnipeg, where she was in the midst of her firstever book tour to promote her 244-page novel, released late last month. “It’s totally different than a curling bonspiel, and even my work as a reporter,” Jones, who calls Halifax home, said with a hearty chuckle of her new experience as an author. “I’m used to asking the questions!”
It was her co-author, Perry Lefko of Sportsnet.ca, who convinced her to write it all down. “He was working at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2013 on the media bench, and I was playing second stone for Mary-Anne Arsenault, and back at the Scotties for the first time in a long time,” Jones recalled. “He was the one that said, ‘You need to tell your story.’ ” Lefko, of course, had fol-
lowed the skip’s incredible career, which has included her team being crowned national champion six times, and claiming two world championship titles, a record that remains untouched in women’s curling. It also features her three decades as a reporter and weather commentator with CBC and curling commentator for NBC, including at the Olympic Winter Games, which has made her a well-known Canadian television personality. But it’s being a typical working wife and mother-of-two whose daily juggling routine was suddenly interrupted by a serious illness that will perhaps hit home hardest with her readers. Jones was rushed to Halifax hospital with sudden symptoms of potentially fatal bacterial meningitis in December 2010, undergoing surgery to repair an opening that had been leaking cerebrospinal fluid, or “brain fluid,” as she calls it in her book. “It kind of woke me up to this incredible feeling of grati-
tude,” Jones said of the lifealtering experience. “When anybody has a health scare, I think it’s a jolt of hard-earned wisdom you get, that I try to take into my daily life now.” Jones said since overcoming that serious illness, she now tries to be “very present” in every moment, whether in her role as wife and mom, professional broadcaster or elite-level athlete and coach. “I try not to multi-task, because that was my life,” Jones said. “I’m probably more efficient now that I’ve chosen to approach it mindfully.” While her humble nature made her initially tentative about writing her book, Jones excitedly accepted her new role as author when she first received a published copy. It was bound in hardcover, her name and photo on the front, pages full of life lessons learned inside and outside of the rink, now to be shared with those who choose to crack it open. “October 21, it arrived in a box on my door,” she said. “It felt complete.”

For Office fans expecting a comedic comeback from Dwight Schrute, this might not be the book for them. Sure, the forward to Rainn Wilson’s memoir The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy is written by the former paper salesman and at least two chapters are dedicated to Wilson’s time with the NBC series, but this book digs deeper into the actor’s ongoing quest for spirituality and acceptance, leading the readers through his lifelong journey of selfdiscovery. Here are five things we learned from Wilson in his new memoir: Wilson had an unconventional childhood When Wilson was two, his mother cheated on his father and left. His father subsequently entered a rebound marriage and moved the family to Nicaragua for a brief period of time, where Wilson grew up with a pet sloth, dog and his neighbour’s pet monkey. The family eventually returned to America, where Wilson went on to immerse himself in playing the bassoon in school band and escaping into weekend-long games of Dungeons & Dragons with friends. “I asked my dad and stepmom when they knew they didn’t love each other,” Wilson
He grew up with the Bahá’i faith The religion was one that Wilson’s dad practiced at home. It took a long time for Wilson to finally accept his own faith, following heavy bouts with cocaine and alcohol growing up. “I was a lost soul in those days, which is easy to do if you’re only pursuing selfish pursuits,” Wilson says. “I just wanted career and myself, status and success. All of my focus was on living this Bohemian lifestyle I talk about. It’s a recipe for getting into a lot of trouble with drugs and alcohol. It was my spiritual journey that helped me out of that.”

His son’s delivery was a terrifying ordeal Wilson’s love for his wife, Holiday Reinhorn, is apparent throughout the book. Still, Wilson’s writings are mostly inwardly focused, as he opts not to recount many stories of his adult family life. The exception is the birth of his son, Walter, following his wife suffering from placental abruption. “It’s a very rare thing that happens where the placenta
starts to detach from the walls of the uterus, before the child is born. It caused a bunch of internal bleeding and stuff,” Wilson explains. “My wife was nine months pregnant and in the hallway of an emergency room because there were no beds ... it was a nightmare. It was absolutely horrifying.” He’s been jumped, twice While holding a random string of jobs, Wilson was “gay bashed” and jumped at least twice and even escaped a potential third jumping. “New York was rough times back then. It was the late ’80s, during the crack epidemic. It was a lot rougher place back then than it is now.” It took him a long time to learn to be himself onstage Wilson always knew he wanted to pursue acting. But it took him years to learn to just “be” in front of the audiences, and let them see what’s underneath. “Instead of trying to please other people and be my idea of what a New York actor was, I just embraced who I was,” he says. “I embraced my geekiness and my awkwardness and my past and wasn’t apologetic for it. As soon as I started doing that I started getting way more work. I was also just a lot happier, because I wasn’t trying to be someone that I wasn’t.” torstar news service

Boyden takes residential school film on the road Canadian Art
Giller winner teams up with filmmaker for Project Charlie When the frozen body of 12-year-old Charlie Wenjack was found on a lonely stretch of railway tracks in northern Ontario nearly 50 years ago, it sparked the first inquest into the treatment of aboriginal children in Canadian residential schools. Before the boy’s death, many Canadians weren’t aware of the country’s residential school system, acclaimed novelist Joseph Boyden explains. It would be some 30 years before the last one closed its doors. “Charlie put that into motion,” said the Scotiabank Giller Prize winner. “He’s a living and breathing symbol.” Boyden is collaborating with filmmaker Terril Calder on Project Charlie. The animated film will tour across the country next
year in conjunction with Boyden’s forthcoming novel Seven Matches, and will mark the 50th anniversary of Wenjack’s death. “We are using his story as a call to action,” said Calder. “Considering all that has come to light and the (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada) report, it is timely to come at this story with a contemporary perspective that pulls no punches. It examines not only Charlie’s (life), but speaks to our nation’s role in evoking change. Not acting is an action against reconciliation.” Justice Murray Sinclair led the commission on the Indian Residential School system in Canada, and his report — released in the spring — resulted in 94 recommendations aimed at bridging the experiences of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians. Project Charlie secured its funding through the inaugural (Re)conciliation initiative, and is one of six cultural works by aboriginal artists that will begin to roll out across the country in
the fall of 2016. Selected from 190 submissions by a panel of indigenous arts professionals, the six pilot projects are receiving up to $75,000 of federal funding through the Canada Council for the Arts and its partners — J.W. McConnell Family Foundation and The Circle on Philanthropy and Aboriginal Peoples in Canada. The initiative aims to promote themes of conciliation and reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. Art and reconciliation are not new concepts, says Elder Samuel Thomas, a grant recipient based in Niagara Falls, Ont. “This is something that’s been on our minds as aboriginal

people for a long time,” he said. In 1979, Thomas began to resurrect 18th and 19th century Iroquois beading styles, collaborating with his mother for 37 years before her recent death, and facilitating beading workshops between aboriginals and non-aboriginals. Over the past 12 years, he has also worked internationally with Kenyan communities, using art and beading as a means for reconciliation between both tribal and religious clashes. The long-standing tradition of using beads in a way that “helps put your mind in proper perspective in order to heal and move forward” is something that Thomas is now expanding to the broader community through his (Re)conciliation initiative. With Opening the Doors to Dialogue, he will host beading sessions across the country. “The beads are used to take the lump out of your throat to speak again, unplug your ears to hear again, to wipe your tears to see again,” said Thomas. Politics, propaganda and lineups Human Behaviour
The French Revolution birthed queues, writer says To queue or not to queue? And why is the queue you’re not standing in always the best? David Andrews went in search of answers and unearthed a world of science, history and cultural norms about the often stressful, sometimes nonexistent and usually time-consuming act of waiting in line. He collected his observations and those of others in a new book out in November from Workman Publishing, Why Does the Other Line Always Move Faster? Andrews’ interest stems from his stint in the Navy and the time he spent during boot camp either lining up for things — chow, checkups — or at attention. He also recalled his childhood in the early 1990s in postCommunist Romania where his parents were missionaries, chasing lines for life’s basics. “There were long lines for everything. Milk, eggs, gasoline,” he said in a recent interview. “You always carried around a bag just in case there was something for sale.” Andrews, 33, notes the
United States wasn’t always a nation of line standers. Agrarian-based societies have little use for the line, he explained. In the early years of cities, and still in spots around the globe, chaos is king, but starting as early as toddlerhood, Americans were slowly trained to respect the line. Queues, Andrews concludes, in one form or another, are “essential to the machinery of modern life,” yet some rail against them as evidence of the “machinemade man,” ever-obedient and lacking outside-the-box creativity. Birth of the queue The modern concept likely made its way from revolutionary France to English shores around 1837, Andrews writes. He attributes the spread in part to Thomas Carlyle, a Victorian historian, satirist and social commentator who wrote a history of the French Revolution. Among the head c h o p pings by guillotine and street mobs Carlyle chronicled was reference in Paris to the queues — or literally in old French “tails” — at bakery shops, at a time of massive famine among the peasants. “The slogan of the French Revolution was Liberty, Equality, Fraternity,” Andrews writes, so to “patiently
wait one’s turn was to hold everyone as equals.” Or as Carlyle put it: “Patriotism stands in queue.” In America, “we believe that all are created equal. So, too, do we stand in line,” Andrews adds. The myth that the British are willing, patient and even eager to stand in line dates to Second World War propaganda during a time
of shortages and rationing, Andrews writes. Soccer and Star Wars Andrews describes two studies that focused on lines. Leon Mann looked at lines of soccer fans that once formed overnight for playoff matches. F. Neil Brady studied lines of Star Wars aficionados who in 1999 camped out for a week or more out-
side theatres around the U.S. for tickets to The Phantom Menace, the first new film in the franchise in 16 years. Both studies revealed a social system in miniature, according to Andrews, complete with competition and cliques. Queuers at the front formed alliances, creating rules that allowed people to leave while others protected their spots. THE ASSOCIATED PRESs

Tattoos may not stand the test of time trends
Will Bautista bat flip ink still look good in ten years? Just hours after slugger Jose Bautista made an indelible mark in Toronto Blue Jays history with his now-famous bat flip, Byran Bevins sought to make the moment even more permanent. The factory worker from Oshawa, Ont., got a tattoo of Bautista doing his celebratory bat toss in Game 5 of the series versus the Texas Rangers — less than 24 hours after it happened. Baseball hysteria in Toronto would ultimately last just a little over a week longer before the Jays were eliminated by the Kansas City Royals. But Bevins has no regrets about his inked image, which is on his upper-left thigh and took more than six hours to create. “Well, maybe when I’m older and it starts to fade and kind of looks dumb,” says Bevins, who has six other tattoos. “But that would be only because of looks, not because of what it is.”
FY Ink in Toronto took to social media to recruit one Jays “superfan” to get the bat-flip image inked on their body for free. So far, the owner of the tattoo is very happy with it. The Canadian Press/Handout and Getty images
Bevins got the tattoo after FY Ink in Toronto took to social media to recruit one Jays “superfan” to get the bat-flip image inked on their body for free. It was a gimmick, but it points to a growing trend that’s been noticed by Mike McLaine, owner of Precision Laser Tattoo Removal in Toronto. “It seems to be a trend that now you get some kind of
event, something going on in the news, and invariably somebody decides to go out there and mark the occasion irreversibly with a tattoo,” says McLaine. FY Ink made headlines for a similar campaign two years ago, when one of its apprentices got a tattoo of then-mayor Rob Ford smoking a crack pipe. “He thought it was cool until
the second day when all the comments (on the story) were pretty friggin’ harsh,” says FY Ink owner Lee Baxter. “He was just like, ‘Man, my parents are ... pissed off at me,”’ he added, using an unprintable expletive. A love of certain musicians or bands seems to drive many impulsive tattoo requests. A client
at FY Ink, for example, got one of singer Chris Brown’s face. While some tattoo parlours have their own code of ethics, Baxter’s isn’t as strict. He calls himself “more of a businessman” who believes that a parlour “should offer from A to Z tattooing” while focusing on hygiene and quality work. But he takes a harder line with younger clients who have lofty ideas, especially those under the required age of 18, even if they’re with their consenting parents. Baxter once turned away a 17-year-old girl who went in with her mother asking for lyrics from a Nine Inch Nails song to be tattooed from her wrist to her armpit. “If someone comes in and they say ‘Go Jays go’ and they want to put it on their forehead, well I’m probably going to tell them it’s a real bad idea and we don’t really want to have anything to do with it,” says Baxter. But if they’re persistent about it, he won’t refuse. “I’d rather make sure that person gets it done somewhere
that’s really safe and clean and I know we’re notable for that, so why not?” he says. McLaine thinks the trend is partly a result of tattoos becoming so ubiquitous, resulting in a mentality of “everybody has a tattoo, so why shouldn’t I get one?” he says. “The second part, a disturbing trend is this undercurrent of ... ‘Well why shouldn’t I get a tattoo, because I can always get it removed.’ While that’s true, it’s a time-consuming, painful, expensive process.” The cost of full tattoo removal at his clinic depends on the size of the work. McLaine says at the low end, it’s about $1,700. And clients need about four to eight treatments to get one fully removed, depending on the depth of the ink (faded ink is easier to remove). McLaine estimates a work like the Bautista tattoo would cost about $3,000 and take a few treatments to get rid of. Of course, Bevins isn’t concerned with that right now. After all, Bautista praised it on his Instagram account and met with Bevins in the team’s locker room. “I was just standing there in my underwear showing them my tattoo.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

restaurants, hidden courtyards, quirky passageways, au courant art galleries and elegantly cosy inns. One of the most popular places to stay is Cypress Inn, co-owned by another Hollywood legend and local resident, Doris Day. The hit recordings of the now 91-year-old Day are piped into the 44 sunny rooms of the 1929 local landmark. Carmel’s small downtown is an architectural mishmash of English-style country houses, Swiss chalets and, most notably, the 21 whimsical fairy tale cottages built by local architect Hugh Comstock starting in the 1920s. Eastwood, who was elected for a twoyear term in 1986 on a proprogress platform, dismissed these Comstock Cottages as “Smurf homes. Once a bohemian refuge for artists such as writer Jack London and photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, Carmel now numbers among the most exclusive addresses in California. Real estate prices soar ever higher on the approach to Carmel Bay, where the sea ebbs and crashes against a long whitesand beach. Glimpsed at cliff-top across the bay are the emerald fairways of famed Pebble Beach, for golfers the most alluring of all the wonders on the Monterey Peninsula.
Carmel area renowned for beauty, Hollywood ties Brian Kendall
For Metro Canada Even now, almost 30 years after his wildly publicized reign as the town’s mayor, Clint Eastwood remains a towering figure in Carmelby-the-Sea. Tourists fantasize about bumping into him at his restaurant at Mission Ranch, the Hollywood icon’s ninehectare property just outside of town, and look for him as they explore the tony streets and hidden courtyards of this unendingly charming coastal community on California’s Monterey Peninsula. But these days Eastwood is more likely to be found teeing it up at nearby Pebble Beach Golf Links, the fabled course he co-owns with Arnold Palmer and former Major League Baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth. One of the finest, most dramatic courses anywhere, Pebble Beach is the undisputed golf headliner of a famously seductive peninsula two hours south of San Francisco that includes the communities of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Pacific Grove, Seaside and Pebble Beach.
Pebble Beach golf course in Monterey, Calif., offers dramatic views from its emerald fairways. istock
Pebble Beach, a bucket-list course for every golfer, charges a green fee of $495, one of the most expensive in the game. But the good news is that golfers don’t have to break the bank to enjoy memorable golf on the Monterey Peninsula. Pebble Beach’s sister courses, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and the Links at Spanish Bay, both offer spectacular ocean views at more palatable prices. Another local beauty is Del Monte Golf Course, opened in
1897 and the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi. Two recently renovated layouts, Poppy Hills Golf Club and Quail Lodge Golf Course, are also highly regarded designs. And a special favourite of knowledgeable golfers is Pacific Grove Golf Links, an affordable oceanfront beauty known as the “other Pebble. Between rounds, head back to Carmel to explore a coastal town jam-packed with upscale

Hot spots Destinations in Central America such as Roatán, Honduras, are growing in popularity. Panama has opened a new airport in Río Hato, drastically cutting the transfer time to many of that country’s most popular resorts. Tourism to Cuba is up almost 25 per cent as Canadians race to see it before the country opens up to the wider U.S. market. A great option for those wanting to explore this gem of a destination is Cuba Cruise. Introduced just two years ago, this small ship offers a seven-night itinerary that circumnavigates the island, stopping at the less-travelled ports of Cienfuegos, Santiago de Cuba and exotic Maria la Gorda. It also includes an overnight stay in the lively capital of Havana and the chance to snorkel above colourful coral reefs.
All-inclusive resort evolves, Cuba beckons For Metro Canada Attention sun seekers: There are a few things you need to bear in mind as you plan your winter vacation. It is not going to be a great year for cheap and cheerful deals. Most tour operators do their contracting in U.S. dollars so the unfavourable exchange rate means sun holidays will be harder on the wallet. Additionally, it is shaping up to be a strong El Niño winter, which means cooler temperatures in closer (and typically cheaper) destinations like Florida, Bahamas, Cuba and parts of Mexico. Although it is impossible to fully predict the weather, those craving heat are advised to drop a few extra dollars and go a little farther south. According to the Caribbean

Tourism Organization, the Dutch island of Curaçao, located just 60 kilometres north of Venezuela, is the fastestgrowing Caribbean destination for Canadians. Transat begins its inaugural flights to the island in December.
Resorts go upscale The all-inclusive resort continues to evolve, going more upscale with better food, decor, service and higher-end liquor choices. Karisma Hotels, for example, are branding themselves as gourmet-
inclusive versus all-inclusive because of their all à-la-carte dining — no buffets and no reservations required. Hyatt has broken into the all-inclusive market with upscale resorts such as the Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara, and
mega resorts such as Casa de Campo in Dominican Republic continue to grow in popularity. Spanning 7,000 tropical acres, Casa de Campo is home to three golf courses, a 370slip Marina and Yacht Club, a

Case against Kane dropped Law
Investigation was ‘rife with reasonable doubt’ Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane can focus solely on his NHL career after avoiding criminal charges in a rape investigation, with prosecutors ending a bizarre three-month
ordeal that put one of hockey’s biggest stars at the centre of intense speculation and criticism. Prosecutors announced Thursday they declined to file charges against Kane because of a lack of credible evidence in a case “rife with reasonable doubt.” The accuser signed an affidavit saying she did not want to press charges, prosecutors said. Roland Cercone, a lawyer for the 21-year-old woman who made the accusation, did not
return messages seeking comment from The Associated Press. A person who answered the accuser’s mother’s cellphone hung up Thursday when contacted by The AP. Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita said a threemonth investigation found that physical and forensic evidence “tend to contradict” the accuser’s claim that she was raped on Aug. 2 at Kane’s off-season home outside Buffalo. “The DNA results lend no
corroboration whatsoever to the complainant’s claim,” said Sedita, who decided against presenting the Patrick Kane case to a grand jury for posGetty images sible charges. “I have repeatedly said that I did nothing wrong,” Kane said in a statement issued by the Blackhawks. “I have respected
the legal process and I am glad that this matter has now been closed and I will have nothing further to say going forward.” It’s not immediately clear whether Kane could face disciplinary action from the National Hockey League. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league wouldn’t comment until reviewing the prosecutor’s findings. At 26, Kane is one of the NHL’s top young stars and has won three Stanley Cup cham-
pionships in Chicago over the past six years, including last season. The high-profile investigation led to Kane’s removal from the cover of a popular NHL video game and fan chants of “She said no!” and “No means no!” during a couple of early road games. “We knew all along that Patrick didn’t do anything wrong,” his agent, Pat Brisson, said in a text to The Associated Press.
