City silent on use of criminals Uber scandal
Investigation company also refuses to say if Calgary a client Helen Pike
Metro | Calgary The City of Calgary dodged direct questions Tuesday on whether or not criminals were hired to test Uber’s security screening. Last week a video surfaced of Mayor Naheed Nenshi slamming Uber, including statements suggesting the city found criminals to go through screening. Metro spoke to city general manager Stuart Dalgleish, who
warned his statements would echo the city’s from Monday. “We believe the public can be assured that the City of Calgary’s investigative techniques are there for the public interest,” Dalgleish said. Although Dalgleish wouldn’t confirm or deny on Tuesday, the city may have hired a third-party investigation company called Xpera to work on the Uber file. “The details surrounding investigations we conduct, we keep those confidential,” he said. Three of the sworn affidavits in the city’s court submission for an injunction against Uber were from Xpera employees. Among the services Xpera provides is due-diligence investigating. An Xpera employee also would not confirm whether the City of Calgary was a client.

Transit riders recount Islamophobic moments
All my friends who wear the hijab and have had similar incidents have never reported anything.

Ala Buzreba
Metro | Calgary Three weeks ago, Ala Buzreba was called a “Paki” and “Muslim terrorist” on the CTrain. Two weeks prior, her 16-yearold sister Sara, was called an “ISIS bitch.” “He got really close to my face and started saying you ISIS sh—t, you ISIS bitch, and I didn’t move because I was scared,” Sara said. “As he was leaving the train, he was behind me and yelled ‘Allahu Akbar’ and then he coughed, or spit on me. “I was really traumatized, I cried when I got home … I feel like if I did anything, I would have been hurt.” Both Sara and Ala have reported the incidents to police. In the family, all five sisters have stories to share about being berated in public, easily picked out as Muslims with their colourful hijabs. One has even had doughnuts hurled at her on a bus.
Ala Buzreba, left, stands next to her sister Sara at a CTrain station. Jennifer Friesen/for Metro
“I think it’s probably happening 100 times more than people are reporting it,” Ala said. “All my friends who wear the hijab and have had similar incidents have never reported anything. I think I’m the first out of any of my friends to have gone to police.”
In Edmonton and Calgary, the Islamophobia hotline has heard many reports of incidents on transit. “We’ve been having a lot of transit-related calls to our hotline both from Calgary and from Edmonton,” said Mustafa Farooq, vice-president of public
policy at the Alberta Muslim Public Affairs Council (AMPAC). “We’re compiling a database to be followed up on.” He said what they’re finding is one call leads to a second and third person coming out of the woodwork. They’ve received 10 calls from Calgary
since the hotline launched, and two of the calls were LRTrelated incidents. But it’s not illegal to shout slurs and insults in public. Ala’s case, as a result, was filed for information with Calgary Police Service. Ruth Steele, a civilian mem-
ber of the crime prevention unit, often presents on personal safety and situational awareness across the city. Steele said it’s unlikely a situation will escalate if you’re surrounded by people, or seek assistance by pressing the help button in the CTrain. “The main tip is to be constantly aware of your surroundings,” Steele said. “If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and seek help if you’re alone … we tell people, especially women, they should always be with a friend or a group — there’s safety in numbers.” Ala said she’d like to see statistics kept on these cases, something Calgary Transit confirmed they don’t do. A spokesperson informed Metro if passengers feel unsafe they are encouraged to use the emergency help phones for immediate response.

Motorcycle parking a pain Couple guilty in court
son’s death
designated spaces
City should offer reduced rates for bikes all year: Resident
The mother of a toddler who died of meningitis began weeping uncontrollably Tuesday after a jury found her and her husband guilty of failing to provide their ill son with the necessaries of life. David and Collet Stephan were charged after 19-monthold Ezekiel died in March 2012. The couple testified at their trial in Lethbridge, Alta., that they believed their son had croup or flu, so they treated him for 2 1/2 weeks with remedies that included smoothies with hot peppers, garlic, onions and horseradish.
Brodie Thomas
Metro | Calgary Often when Nick Roman arrives at work downtown on his Yamaha street bike, the few motorcycle parking spaces available are already full. That leaves him no choice but to begin searching for an empty space in one of the city’s other designated motorcycle spaces if he wants to save on the cost of parking. The city does offer motorcycles reduced rates, but only from May to October, and only if a motorcyclist parks in one of the designated spaces. He often ends up parking about six blocks from his office. Roman loves using his motorcycle whenever possible because he can get to his office in about 15 minutes as opposed to 40 minutes on the bus. He saves money on parking when he does get a designated spot, and he saves money on gas. He wants the city to take a page from cities such as Edmonton, Montreal and Vancouver, and give bikers a discount for any on-street parking. “At least just allow it wherever — you can park about six bikes where a car can go,” he said. He’s also unhappy that the city only offers special parking rates from May to October. He took his bike out at the first of March, and in past years he has used it well into November. “I don’t know why they aren’t doing more,” said Roman. “It eases congestion, it eases parking — I just think it’s a nobrainer.”
This case is not yet over, but a big chapter has come to a close. Justice Rodney Jerke
Nick Roman thinks if the city relaxes regulations on motorcycle parking in the core, more people will commute by bike and reduce gridlock. Brodie Thomas/Metro
I don’t know why they aren’t doing more. It eases congestion, it eases parking — I just think it’s a no-brainer. Nick Roman Jessica Bell, spokeswoman for the City of Calgary, said the city has opened motorcycle parking on May 1 because that’s when the city has observed most
roads so we convert them back to regular parking spaces in October,” she said. She said they also wait until the city has completed street sweeping, so there’s less gravel and sand on the road — which can pose a hazard to motorcyclists. Bell said the city adds or removes motorcycle parking based on demand, and will review new requests as they come in.

He eventually stopped breathing and died after being rushed to hospital. The four-man, eight-woman jury had been deliberating since Monday afternoon. There was a gasp in the courtroom as the decision from the jurors came down. Observers in the courtroom’s gallery started to cry. The defence argued the couple were loving, responsible parents who simply didn’t realize how sick the little boy was. The Crown said the Stephans didn’t do enough to ensure Ezekiel received the medical help he needed. The prosecution noted that the Stephans had been warned by a friend who was a registered nurse that the boy probably had meningitis. Justice Rodney Jerke did not set a sentencing date. That’s to be decided at a court appearance on June 13. The Stephans were not taken into custody. the canadian press

Changes to alarm bylaw worry some Lucie Edwardson
Metro | Calgary Changes to a city bylaw have alarm bells ringing for some Calgarians. Effective May 15, Calgary 911 will no longer dispatch alarm calls where only one zone is activated and alarm agencies will be required to contact two key holders before contacting police.
For in-home alarm user, Mike Lowes, the changes concern him “from a safety perspective.” “Most alarm systems, especially when you’re home, will only show one trigger point,” he said. “If that person is grabbed on to or hurt they won’t be able to answer their phone or call 911 and now everyone knows no one is coming.” CPS said they respond to approximately 45 alarm calls each day and said 96 per cent are
deemed false alarms. The second bylaw change will come later this year when Calgary 911 will stop dispatching police to an alarm without a valid alarm permit or if the alarm agency isn’t licensed. CPS will not dispatch to commercial premises during regular business hours. Lowe said CPS should instead hold those creating difficulties accountable through fines. Jarod Dagley, who also has
a home alarm system, said his alarm company sends a guard to check on the home when an alarm is triggered. “The guard checks things out and if he sees something he calls the police,” he said.. United Alarm told Metro they’d help customers with the bylaw changes. CPS said they hope changes will improve call response times and focus on responses to valid alarms and priority calls.

A ‘great prairie boy’ vigil
Friends recall John Ridsdel, who was killed by terrorists Brodie Thomas
Metro | Calgary The vigil for a Canadian man killed by terrorists this week took on political tones Tuesday afternoon. John Ridsdel, a former Calgary resident, was killed by members of a terrorist group in the Philippines this week. About eight people were in attendance at the vigil. Event organizer, Merle Terlesky, said a few words before the participants bowed their heads and held hands while saying a prayer. “Without sounding political or partisan, what has become abundantly clear to me is that the dove policy of the liberal government, newly elected, is not working,” said Terlesky
before the prayer. The pastor who said the prayer also prayed for God to “give those politicians a backbone.” A childhood friend of Ridsdel spoke to reporters after the prayer. Stuart Yaholniesky grew up with John in Yorkton, Sask. and kept in touch with him over the years. “John always came to see me, whether it was professionally or if he was just passing through town, we would always connect somehow.” Yaholniesky described him as a very intelligent man who was well spoken and fun to be with. He was in touch with him through Facebook in the days before Ridsdel was kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf militants. “He was excited about going on this sailing trip, and the next day, he was kidnapped.” Yaholniesky said he would remember his personality more than anything, and remember him as a family man. “I just think he was a great prairie boy, as I think I am,” he said.

STIs saw a spike in 2015 INFECTIONS
Alberta Health says outbreaks may be due to social media Jeremy Simes
For Metro | Calgary Alberta Health has seen the rate of STIs “dramatically” increase in the last year, reaching outbreak levels for gonorrhea and syphilis. Though Chlamydia is by far the most widespread, gonorrhea has gained the most ground, as the rate of that infection for women and men jumped by 93 per cent and 66 per cent, respectively. There were more than 3,400 cases of gonorrhea in 2015, an 80 per cent increase from 2014. In 2016, there have been 1,100 cases to date. There were 350 cases of syphilis in 2015, about double what the province saw in 2014, surpassing historic highs in 2009. Alberta Health’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Karen Grimsrud said new social-media sites have contributed to the spike in rates, allowing people to have anonymous sex with others who don’t disclose their sexual health. “When people don’t know their sexual partners’ identities, it makes it difficult to contact partners for followup testing and treatment,” she said. But Debbie Bruckner, senior director of access and support with student wellness at the University of Calgary, said university data paints a different picture.
This graph shows the rate of STIs in Calgary from 2011 to 2015; rates are up provincewide. Metro
“I don’t think you can make that assumption (of young people not being careful),” said Bruckner. She said gonorrhea, HPV and HIV rates have declined to 0 per
cent, 0.9 per cent and 0.2 per cent of the student body, respectively, according to a 2016 survey that polled more than 1,000 students. Chlamydia, however, increased to 1.5 per cent of the

student population. Eighty per cent of University of Calgary students had no or one sexual partner, she said. On Wednesday, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is releasing STI rates for people aged 20 to 24. Dr. Gerry Predy, senior medical director of population and public health with AHS, said the spike shows no signs of levelling off. He said AHS has expanded STI clinic hours in Edmonton and Calgary.

time in history allows us to maintain or restore our youthful appearance in ways that would have seemed nothing short of magical to our ancestors. Treatments exist of anyone’s appearance. Because we all age in choosing the right procedure for the right person. Let’s talk about SoftLift.
Juvederm replaces lost volume! As we age we lose fat on our faces. Our cheeks, which were full and high when we were young can sink and develop a triangular shaped flat spot that can appear shaded and grooved. Many of us lose volume in the orbits of our eyes. This causes eye circles that may or may not be dark in appearance. We also lose volume in our lips and other areas of our faces. This lost volume allows the face to fall and contributes to the appearance of lip lines and the folds that appear at the sides and corners of the mouth. Even when we are young, lack of volume can make us look tired!
Lost volume in the face is easy to replace with dermal fillers! This popular procedure can restore the contours and shape your face had when you were younger. Fillers can also
be used to create volume where it has never existed. A skilled injector is able to place the correct consistency and amount of filler to precisely replace or create volume to the areas of the face that can benefit.
Results are instant and natural in appearance! As we age we also develop wrinkles and lines that eventually become permanently
cream to desensitize the skin. In other areas we will choose to avoid the use of needles altogether and use a micro-cannula to place the ‘Ouchless Needle.’ It is small and the tip it is comfortable and the risk of bruising and damage to the skin is minimal.

MRU gives grads a boost education
Program aims to get more new pilots a shot at top jobs Helen Pike
Metro | Calgary
Mount Royal University aviation grads are soaring towards success as the school’s partnership with Jazz Aviation LP lifts off. Since 2007, MRU has partnered with the airline to give three of their best and brightest pilot students the chance to interview — a foot in the door that can shave five to 10 years off a pilot’s career path on their way to fly commercial. This year the aviation pathways program is expanding and any grads who
qualify with top grades will have the chance to interview. “To get into a major airline like Jazz you need a minimum of 1,500 hours, so there’s a big gap,” said Leon Cygman, chair of Mount Royal’s Aviation department. “Usually they’ll find a job at a smaller operator, usually in northern Canada. They do a lot of groundwork at low wages.” Cygman said they have proven MRU students can go directly from the classroom to the cockpit
with the 250 hours they have at graduation. Graham Woods graduated in 2015 and is already on his way to the driver seat, as first officer is typically the second pilot on an aircraft. “It’s very quick, but it’s what the pathways program between Jazz and Mount Royal is all about,” Woods said. “It allows the development of young pilots through the guidance and mentorship of a professional airline.”

A University of Calgary study found mothers like Emma Stuart Campbell had a higher risk of postpartum depression if they received less breastfeeding support. jeremy simes/for metro research
Breastfeeding help may fight the blues Jeremy Simes
For Metro | Calgary All it took was an alarm clock and some not-so-good advice to turn Emma Stuart Campbell’s breastfeeding schedules into an anxiety-ridden nightmare. Stuart Campbell said she hopes a new University of Calgary study — which found mothers who received less breastfeeding support were more likely to experience postpartum depression — will give doctors and health professionals tools to better advise new moms about breastfeeding so their mental health stays intact. “It’s such an important time for bonding,” she said. “It wasn’t latching properly. It was painful. And I just felt like I wasn’t getting it right. When I went to get support, I felt like they thought my problems were minor.” Katie Chaput, lead author of the study and senior research methodologist for the Alberta Children’s Hospital, said researchers now have solid evidence suggesting they can change things to better help moms. “If we support moms … their risk in postpartum depression is drastically decreased,” she said, adding supports could reduce depression 65 per cent. The study evaluated 442 new Calgary moms who had no evidence of depression, measur-
ing breastfeeding difficulties, experiences with breastfeeding support and the emergence of postpartum depression. The study found 87 per cent of women reported at least one severe or unbearable breast feeding difficulty. Ninety-nine per cent said they received some sort of breastfeeding support. Stuart Campbell’s support, on the other hand, was a bit mixed. She said some health professionals told her she had to wake up every three hours to feed her child, Finn, meaning she had to set an alarm. “I was always worried I wouldn’t get enough sleep until my next alarm went off,” she said. “I was exhausted, overwhelmed and I made a few attempts to ask the doctor, ‘Do I really need to wake him up?’” Turns out she didn’t have to set alarms to wake him, meaning better sleep for both of them. Chaput said she hopes the research will lead to a clinical trial soon, as 15 per cent of mothers in developed countries suffer from postpartum depression.
When I went to get support, I felt like they thought my problems were minor. Emma Stuart Campbell

pop culture threads
Costumers breathe life into favourite characters Aaron Chatha
Metro | Calgary The first time Yelaina May cosplayed at the Calgary Comic Expo, she was so nervous she waited until she was firmly in the parking lot to finish changing into her costume. She wasn’t a fan of crowds, and wasn’t sure people would like her costume of Nightingale from the video game Skyrim. Fast-forward to an hour later — the fans loved it. Fast-forward to two years later, and she’s still dressing up for conventions around the country. “Now I’m walking around the
hotel and at Starbucks with all my costume makeup on. Her skills have improved, too. Her costumes are much better, and now she knows to use zippers and Velcro, and her costume-accurate laces are more for show than function. “Lacing and unlacing yourself every time you need to go to the washroom is really not sensible. Fellow Calgary cosplayers Dara DeFreitas and Alana Waffles said it’s all about the adrenalin, and the fun of being recognized for your costuming skills and accuracy. “I can’t really draw, I can’t paint or play music at all — but I can hot glue the crap out of something, laughed Waffles. They said in just the last few years, as comic book and video game properties have become more mainstream, the fandom around cosplaying has increased exponentially. Beyond the con Overall, social media has been a boon for the budding cosplay
enthusiast. Cosplayers often take photo shoots, post costuming tutorials online and even earn a little side income selling prints. Currently, DeFreitas has more than 11,000 fans on Facebook. May has 23,000. Waffles, operating on Instagram, has more than 32,000. DeFreitas said the explosion in cosplay’s popularity is not only because these properties have gained more exposure in mainstream culture, but because fans appreciate the hard work of making a costume look accurate. “We like to see a character come to life, she said. “It’s just one step outside of a video game, and I think people appreciate knowing how much time cosplayers put into these things. Each of these three cosplayers have been at it for several years, and although they all work day jobs, they’re breaking out the thread, needles and moulding kits during their every spare moment, leading up to the Comic Expo this weekend.
Time and Cost: Costume design a year-long effort
Â?  Â? Â? Â? Â? Â? Â
Cosplaying is a term used for fans who create costumes from scratch, based off of their favourite comic book or video game characters, to show off at big conventions. They often pose for photos, show off their work and have become a staple to the fun atmosphere of these gatherings. But it’s not a decision these costumers come to the night before a show. Alana Waffles has been cosplaying since she was 17, and said it can take weeks
for a simple costume, and up to a year for something more elaborate. One of the costumes she’s wearing this year is a bird-like PokÊmon, but redesigned in the vein of a Vegas showgirl. From design to ordering in different pieces, to putting it together, it has been a challenge since July. She said at minimum she spends $200 on a costume. The average is more around $350. For Dara DeFreitas, who likes to make costumes with
heavy armour components, like characters from Gears of War or Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, the cost is higher. She doesn’t like to use foam — she wants the costume to look good and be durable, so she moulds her own thermo plastic. Costs can go as high as $900. But it’s all worth it, she said, to be able to take that costume to conventions around the world — and see the joy it brings fans to see their favourite character on the show floor. Emily Expo’s guide to an excellent Expo adventure Calgary Expo
A day-by-day list of events you need to hit this weekend Candice Ward
For Metro | Calgary Wednesday Although the Calgary Expo officially begins Thursday, spokeswoman and mascot Emily Expo recommends checking out Sam Maggs in Conversation (in partnership with WordFest) at the Calgary Public Library on Wednesday evening.
Ticket Sales Single-day tickets are still available for the Calgary Expo.
Alley will showcase this legendary strip with a section called “Riverdale Lane.” “I was definitely a fan of Archie as a kid, so I’m especially looking forward to checking out Riverdale Lane and the artists there who have worked on Archie over the years,” says Emily Expo.
Maggs is the bestselling author of The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy and will share her tips to living the nerdy life for females in the often male-dominated world of geekdom. Thursday Once the doors open on Thursday for Preview Night, Emily Expo suggests checking out some of the special advanced screenings of Orphan Black, panels with surprise reveals and shopping specials taking place down Artist Alley. Her biggest tip of the night: bring cash, as many vendors only accept cash and it will help with any lines or issues with ATMs on site. Friday Friday is when it all kicks into hyper drive, with the day starting off with the free Parade of Wonders (POW) — starting from Eau Claire and ending at Olympic Plaza.
There’s a ton of Calgary Comic Expo stuff to do this weekend. Candice Ward/For Metro
At 4:15 p.m. in the Stampede Corral, William Shatner will take the stage for his panel, which Emily Expo says is sure to be out of this world. And new this year, the Calgary Expo will throw the firstever Official After Party at Cow-

For those who have ever wanted to see Batman, Superman, Captain America and Wonder Woman all in the same place at the same time, the Kid’s Costume Showcase (5:30 p.m.) and the Costume Contest (6 p.m.) will take place at the Corral. Sunday Emily Expo says Sunday is the one day that comic-book fans cannot miss. At 2:45 p.m. in the Corral, Stan Lee will hold his final Alberta panel, as he will no longer make any more Canadian convention appearances after this year.
TOP TIPS Expo advice from the Ex-pert Calgary’s geekiest week is about to hit warp speed, and Emily Expo has offered up her insider’s guide to getting the most out of the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. “My piece of advice is always this: make a plan and make sure you can see what you want to see, but keep an open mind,” says Emily Expo. “Some of my favourite characters, stories and artists have been discoveries at conventions. It’s a great place to celebrate what you love but also uncover new things.” There are over 200 hours of programming at the Expo, plus special areas such as the Kids’ Zone and Gaming Zone, which have everything from free arcade games to board games. “You could spend all four days at Expo and never experience a dull moment,” says Emily Expo. Mosquito control
City is ready to fight bugs with bugs Brodie Thomas
Metro | Calgary The City of Calgary is getting high tech in the way it fights mosquitoes. That is — if there are any mosquitos this year. Jim Watts, integrated pest management technician with the City of Calgary, said the weather has been so dry, they haven’t had the need to do aerial spraying
for the critters. “It seems worse this spring in terms of dryness,” said Watts. “This year there’s no snowpack so it’s even drier this year.” The city didn’t conduct aerial sprays last year either. The city uses aquabac, a live bacteria that is harmless to everything except mosquito larvae. Workers spray it from the ground or from helicopters on areas that have shallow standing water. Mosquito larvae mature in
shallow water, but if there is no water the lifecycle is interrupted. “We try to hit that spring target because that’s when there’s the most synchronization with their development,” said Watts. “Once we get into the season you’ve got overlapping generations.” Although they may not be spraying from the air, crews will work throughout the season, seeking out areas that do need local treatment. That’s where technology comes in.
Watts said his crews are now able to tap into data from the city’s water services’ rain gauges. He said in the summer months, some communities can get localized cloudbursts while other areas of the city go weeks without rain. He said they’ll know from the amount of rain collected if a spraying is warranted. “If we got 50 -70 millimetres of rain in 3 or 4 days, we would definitely be looking at conducting an aerial (spray),” said Watts.

Metro | Calgary As the excitement of winning the RBC Fast Pitch competition sets in, the Cups2Go team has a lot to be proud of and some real business decisions to ponder. Daniel Schneider, leader of the Cups2Go team said he came up with the idea a couple of years ago, but never put his thoughts to action — until now. “When this class came up there was an opportunity to work on this business and the design of my idea and see if people saw the same value in it as I did,” he said. Cups2Go is meant to replace “ugly,” “flimsy,” cardboard drink trays with a sleeker, easier to use alternative. “Cups2Go is a paper thin design with two cup holes at the bottom in the middle and
then you can fold it and it acts as a carrying case for two cups,” he said. Schneider said Cups2Go is meant to free up a user’s hands and make it easier for them to carry more without the risk of spilling or dropping. Cups2Go was tested at Calgary’s Globe Cinema, and, according to Schneider, was met with “all positive reviews.” The product also won the viewer’s choice award at the competition. Now, Schneider said the company’s next move is to get a patent on their product, and he will be spending the summer working on the business. “He’s going to be the summer incubator program that is funded in part by the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation,” said Derek Hassay, RBC teaching professor of entrepreneurial thinking at the U of C. “Daniel has the ability to work on this concept throughout the summer while getting great mentorship, so his business is moving forward.” Hassay said the big decision now for the group will be if they all stay on board with the idea — something they have until the end of summer to decide.

PM won’t budge on ransom Philippines
One Canadian still being held hostage by Abu Sayyaf group Justin Trudeau is taking an uncompromising stance against terrorist kidnappers, vowing that Canada will never pay ransom for the release of hostages. Moreover, he’s promising to press other countries to adopt the same unyielding approach. The prime minister took the hard line Tuesday as he wrapped up a three-day cabinet retreat that was overshadowed by the death of Canadian John Ridsdel, who was beheaded Monday by Abu Sayyaf militants in the Philippines after seven months of captivity. Amid speculation about whether the government might pay ransom to release two others still being held captive — Canadian citizen Robert Hall and Norwegian Kjartan Sekkingstad, whom a government official confirmed is a permanent resident of Canada — Trudeau said he wanted “to make one thing perfectly, crystal clear.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks to the media after the Liberal Party cabinet retreat in Kananaskis, Alta. The prime minister is taking unyielding approach to dealing with the ransom demands of a terrorist group. THE CANADIAN PRESs
“Canada does not and will not pay ransom to terrorists, directly or indirectly,” he said. He said it would encourage terrorists to kidnap more Canadians. Ridsdel, 68, of Calgary, was one of four tourists — including Hall, Sekkingstad and a
Filipino woman — who were kidnapped last Sept. 21 by Abu Sayyaf militants from a marina on southern Samal Island. Some of Canada’s allies, notably France and Italy, have been willing to pay ransom for release of their citizens. Trudeau said he spoke Tuesday
with British Prime Minister David Cameron, whose country adheres to the same noransom policy as Canada, and they agreed to press others to do the same. The issue of whether governments acquiesce to the demands of terror groups has
long been murky, and is likely to remain an open question regardless of what Trudeau and his fellow leaders decide. An al-Qaida letter obtained by The Associated Press three years ago suggests about $1 million was paid for the release of Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler in Niger in 2009. It was unclear who paid the ransom. A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable from February 2010 lent credence to the notion Canada makes payments, quoting Washington’s then-ambassador to Mali as saying “it is difficult to level criticism on countries like Mali and Burkina Faso for facilitating negotiations when the countries that pay ransom, like Austria and Canada, are given a pass.” THE CANADIAN PRESS
Gender parity
Hillary Clinton hints at having equitable cabinet Justin Trudeau’s gender-equal cabinet could soon be replicated in the United States, depending on the outcome of the current American election. The poll-leading presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, appeared to indicate her intention to follow suit when asked about it in a televised event on the eve of Tuesday’s five northeastern primaries. A moderator had asked about the Canadian cabinet: “(Justin Trudeau) promised when he took
I am going to have a cabinet that looks like America, and 50 per cent of America is women, right? Hillary Clinton
office that he would have a cabinet that was 50 per cent women, and then he did it … Would you make that same pledge?” Clinton suggested she would: “I am going to have a cabinet that looks like America, and 50 per cent of America is women,
right?” Canada’s gender-balanced cabinet has gotten a fair bit of attention in the U.S., fuelled partly by how the prime minister responded to a question about it with a shoulder shrug and the sound bite: “Because it’s 2015.”
But in reality, Canada didn’t blaze that particular trail. Finland’s cabinet is 62 per cent female; Cape Verde’s is 53 per cent; Sweden’s is 52 per cent; and France’s is 50 per cent, according to last year’s statistics from the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Even within Canada, the first gender-parity cabinet was created not by Trudeau — but by the former premier in Trudeau’s home province of Quebec, Jean Charest. Clinton remains the U.S. presi-
dential front-runner, despite a tougher-than-expected primary challenge. She retains a significant lead over her more progressive challenger, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and is expected to add to it Tuesday in primaries in Maryland, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Delaware. She has also consistently led general-election polls against the Republican front-runners, Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz.
Troops hunting extremists The Philippine military came under increased pressure Tuesday to rescue more than 20 foreign hostages after their Muslim extremist captors beheaded a Canadian man, but troops face a dilemma in how to succeed and ensure the safety of the remaining captives. Abu Sayyaf gunmen beheaded John Ridsdel on Monday in the southern densely forested province of Sulu, sparking condemnations and prompting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to pledge to help the Philippines pursue the extremists behind the “heinous act.” Ridsdel’s head, which was placed in a plastic bag, was dumped by motorcycle-riding militants Monday night in Jolo town in impoverished Sulu, about 950 kilometres south of Manila, where the Abu Sayyaf and allied gunmen are believed to be holding 22 foreign hostages from six countries. Trudeau said the Canadian government is committed to working with the Philippine government and international partners to “pursue those responsible for this heinous act and bring them to justice.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

U.S. sees heavy storms Thunderstorms bearing hail as big as grapefruit and winds approaching hurricane strength lashed portions of the Great Plains on Tuesday, but arrived without the grand tornadoes that many had worried about for days. A rope tornado brushed fields south of Wichita, Kan., and another small twister touched down in southwestern Indiana. As the sun went down on the western prairie, the Storm Prediction Center had received reports of bad weather from Texas to Nebraska to West Virginia, but none of them deadly. “It’s never straightforward when you’re sitting here talking about (predicting) large tornadoes,” meteorologist Matt Mosier said as the forecast was taking shape. But it’s not like the weather wasn’t bad or scary. It was both. Hail four inches in diameter fell in northern Kansas, northwest of Marysville, and winds hit 70 m.p.h. in Missouri and Texas while storms went through. Residents of Topeka, Kan., eyed the sky nervously during rush hour after forecasters warned that a thunderstorm could produce a tornado at any moment. As night fell, small twisters accompanied a line of thunderstorms as it rolled into Oklahoma City. Telltale power flashes from failing transformers pierced the twilight as another neighbourhood lost power. Forecasters posted a tornado watch for Oklahoma and Texas until midnight, saying the atmosphere could still be unsettled enough for twisters to develop. “This is a particularly dangerous situation,” the Storm Prediction Center alerted in red type in an afternoon advisory. It uses such language on only about seven per cent of its tornado watches. Forecasters had predicted a 90 per cent chance of tornadoes and said 80 per cent could have winds above 111 m.p.h. in Oklahoma and Texas. the associated press

Trump campaign gets all fired up in five-state sweep u.s. election
The Donald’s strong showing a huge blow to his GOP rivals Donald Trump swept all five Republican primaries Tuesday, a commanding showing across the Northeast that keeps the Republican front-runner on his narrow path to the GOP nomination. Hillary Clinton was dom-
inant in Democratic contests in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. At press time, Clinton and rival Bernie Sanders were locked in a close race in Connecticut, while the Vermont senator had an edge in Rhode Island, according to early vote counts. Trump’s victories came in Maryland, as well as Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. His strong showing was a blow to rivals who are running out of ways to stop the brash billionaire.

Clinton aimed to emerge from Tuesday’s contests on the brink of becoming the first woman
nominated by a major party. She’s already increasingly looking past rival Bernie Sanders, even as the Vermont senator vows to stay in the race until primary voting ends in June. Sanders spent Tuesday campaigning in West Virginia, where he drew several thousand people to a lively evening rally. He urged his supporters to recognize that they are “powerful people if you choose to exercise that power.” Still, there were some signs that Sanders’ campaign was coming to grips with his diffi-
cult position. Top aide Tad Devine said that after Tuesday’s results were known, “we’ll decide what we’re going to do going forward.” Trump’s victories padded his delegate totals, yet the Republican contest remains chaotic. The businessman is the only candidate left in the three-person race who could possibly clinch the nomination through the regular voting process, yet he could still fall short of the 1,237 delegates he needs. the associated press

Heroic dog dies Rebecca Williams

Dayko, a four-year-old Labrador with the City of Ibarra Fire Department, died from a heart attack following an earthquake rescue mission. CITY OF IBARRA FIRE DEPARTMENT via FACEBOOK
A rescue dog who died following a mission that saved eight people after Ecuador’s devastating earthquake is being hailed a hero. The City of Ibarra Fire Department announced Dayko, a four-year-old Labrador, suffered a heart attack caused by heatstroke last week. “Dayko captivated us all with his tender look and his friendly nature,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Dayko has left a big void in the canine unit … and in each one of those who knew him.” Dayko was part of a successful rescue operation in Pedernales following Ecuador’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake that has so far killed 650 people. “This friend of four legs gave his life in the line of duty,” the fire department wrote. “Thank you Dayko for your heroic efforts in Pedernales and in various emergencies to which you came,” wrote the fire department.

Third wave of migrants returned to Turkey from Greece Dozens of migrants arrived in Turkey on Tuesday, Turkish officials said, as part of a migration deal with the European Union meant to stem the flow of people heading to Europe’s prosperous heartland. Ferries carrying a total of 49 migrants from the Greek islands of Kos, Chios and Lesbos reached the Turkish port towns of Gulluk, Cesme and Dikili, according to Turkish
news agencies and an official at Dikili, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government rules. According to the deal finalized last month, Turkey will take back migrants who reached Greece after March 20, unless they successfully apply for asylum in Greece. For every Syrian among those returned, Europe has pledged to take a Syrian refugee directly
from Turkey to be resettled in an EU country. Tuesday’s group, from Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Myanmar, was the third wave of migrants to be returned to Turkey. As part of the deal, some refugee camps on the eastern Aegean Greek islands have been turned into closed detention centres holding those who face potential deportation.
One of those is Moria camp on Lesbos, where a protest broke out Tuesday during a visit there by the Greek migration affairs minister and a Dutch official. A Greek official said Ioannis Mouzalas was visiting the camp with Dutch junior justice minister Klaas Dijkhoff when migrants began shouting “freedom” and “open the borders,” and banging metal
objects. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with department regulations. Police said the unrest began in the section housing unaccompanied teenagers, with protesters starting fires by burning trash. Riot police were on standby outside the camp, police said, adding that the situation was tense but under control. the associated press

Millennials increasingly considering co-buying When Jeremy Campbell purchased a house in Ladner, B.C., with his sister and her husband in 2010, it was meant to be a temporary arrangement until he could upgrade to a place of his own. “The initial plan was to do this short term just to get into the market,” says Campbell, who covered one third of the down payment on a 2,000 square-foot home that’s split into two suites. But with home prices in the Lower Mainland’s hot real estate market soaring, Campbell says they’re thinking of staying put. “We’ll invest in the house to expand it versus selling and going our separate ways,” says Campbell, noting that a renovation is needed to accommodate the growing family, which now includes his fiancée, their new dog and his three-year-old niece. Experts say an increasing number of first-time homebuyers are
An RBC poll found that roughly one in four millennials would consider purchasing a home with a friend, and 24% would consider buying with family.

contemplating arrangements like Campbell’s as sky-high prices in markets such as Toronto and Vancouver have eroded affordability. A recent RBC poll found that roughly one in four millennials would consider purchasing a home with a friend — up from only 11.7 per cent the previous year. The number of young buyers
who would consider going in on the purchase with a family member was 24 per cent, up from 14.7 per cent in 2015, the survey said. In addition to higher prices, premiums for mortgage default insurance have risen, presenting an additional obstacle for firsttime buyers, Nielsen adds. The online survey of 2,000
Canadians was conducted by Ipsos on RBC’s behalf between Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. While many co-purchases involve both parties living together in the home, that isn’t always the case. When Richard Wiebe bought a $340,000 two-storey house in Toronto’s east end with a close friend in 2012, they each paid
half of the down payment and agreed to split the cost of all of expenses and any capital gains when they sell. But only Wiebe lives in the home. For his friend, the transaction is purely an investment. “It’s an awesome way to get into the market sooner without having to find ‘The One.”’ Experts caution that such arrangements come with risks. “When you purchase an asset together, it’s basically like starting a business together,” says Chantel Chapman, financial fitness coach at online lender Mogo Finance Technology. “There are going to be points in time where things might not be amazing, and you need to account for that.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

Starbucks has released an emoji keyboard app, in order to “add a little personality to email, texts or Facebook messages.” The Starbucks-based emojis include Frappuccinos, iced teas, coffees and even a purple “sipface” unicorn. New emojis will be added throughout the year. Starbucks has been enjoying success of late with its mobile order and pay app, which is now responsible for 10% of orders at the brand’s busiest stores. The keyboard is available (for both iOS and Android) as a free download on Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store. AFP

Investments in top tax havens up 17% in 2015, data shows Corporate Canada increased spending in its 10 favourite tax havens by 17 per cent in 2015, according to new figures on direct foreign investment released Tuesday by Statistics Canada. Canadians for Tax Fairness crunched the numbers and found that Canadian corpora-
tions invested almost $40 billion last year in the top 10 tax haven destinations for Canadian capital — taking investment totals since 1990 to $270.2 billion. Barbados has been the top destination, attracting $79.9 billion in total while seeing its numbers climb 14 per cent in
2015. Four other countries in Canada’s top 10 — Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Switzerland and Hong Kong — all saw year-over-year increases of at least 34 per cent last year. “The money doesn’t just stay there, it goes on to somewhere

Trudeau finally arrives at usefully angry response to terror
Rosemary Westwood ON PLAGIARISM
Wente’s putative wrongdoing is not on the scale of Jonah Lehrer’s or Benny Johnson’s, but the allegations are serious and numerous. So why the Globe’s kid gloves? Perhaps it’s because Wente is, well, Wente. Exhaustive the Globe’s response is not. After columnist Margaret Wente was again accused of plagiarism this week, the Globe and Mail issued a correction, an apology and a promise it won’t be repeated. All three appeared in a story, which Walrus editor Jonathan Kay noted reads more like a press release, bylined by the public editor Sylvia Stead. A public editor is intended to be an arm’s length arbiter of media ethics, which is why a corporate-response-esque piece strikes as odd. Odd, too, is the fact that while Stead’s article quotes liberally from the Globe’s code of conduct on plagiarism (which is wide-ranging and vague about what “may” constitute plagiarism) neither Stead, nor the single quote from editor-in-chief David Walmsley, actually uses the word. Instead, euphemisms abound: “similarities,” “issue,” “without acknowledging,” “same phrase… repeated,” “fell short of standards,” “did not attribute” and “mistakes.” Nor did Wente’s name appear in the printed correction. As for what this, Wente’s second plagiarism scandal in four years, requires in terms of action by the Globe, we have this promise from Walmsley: “The Opinion team will be working with Peggy to ensure this cannot happen again.”
It’s good business to appear to be ethically beyond reproach, but it’s bad business to lose your golden calves
That would be again, again. Let’s assume we won’t be getting a second columnof-defence from Wente, since what’s the point in repeating herself. “I’m far from perfect. I make mistakes. But I’m not a serial plagiarist,” she wrote in 2012.
Among the most exhaustive reactions to plagiarism was Wired magazine’s hiring of an outside journalist to chart wrongs in the work of science writer Jonah Lehrer; and Buzzfeed’s review of more than 500 posts by Benny Johnson. Wente’s putative wrong-
sturdy success Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente is among Canada’s most widely read writers despite two highprofile accusations of plagiarism in four years. handout
But for the Globe, there are other options than “working with” a writer. And if the paper-mosthoping-to-be-the-New-YorkTimes wants to be taken seriously on this, it should pick one. On the harsh end: The Vancouver Province fired a sports columnist in 2008 after he lifted a phrase about Guys and Dolls from Sports Illustrated magazine. Despite the writer’s repeated apologies (akin to “Ms. Wente said she deeply regrets these mistakes”), the Province did not budge. The Times has responded to allegations of plagiarism by its writers with investigations, to varying outcomes (resignations, months-later buyouts).
doing is not on the scale of Lehrer’s or Johnson’s, but the allegations are serious and numerous (Canadaland counted six in recent columns). So why the Globe’s kid gloves? Perhaps it’s because Wente is, well, Wente. She’s among the country’s most read — and most hate-read — writers. And in the age of media fracturing, a name that draws readers and spurs debate is only rising in value. So perhaps the Globe’s response is tailor-made for a seemingly priceless pundit. Standing behind Wente does appear to be worth more, financially speaking, than offering the public the appearance of a thorough going-over of the
Tim Harper
allegations. At any rate, it’s hard to imagine a lowly intern who clipped whole sentences from other writers getting the same loyal treatment. And: Would other legacy media brands act any differently to accusations against their crown jewels? I’m not claiming they would; I’m genuinely wondering. Because while it’s good business to appear to be ethically beyond reproach, it’s bad business to lose your golden calves. Possible double-standards are elsewhere in this fiasco, too. We know about the allegations because the media critic Carol Wainio has been combing through Wente’s work for years, posting her findings intermittently on her blog, Media Culpa. You have to wonder how many other infractions by other writers we’re unaware of, thanks to the lack of a dedicated sleuth. It’s also clear by the glee on Twitter that many — and many in the media — love nothing more than a good, juicy Wente controversy. She got one thing absolutely right when she said in 2012 “what I often am is a target for people who don’t like what I write.” I’ve often wondered if they also don’t like that she’s a woman, since rightwing male voices don’t typically elicit the same vitriol. A hate-on for Peggy feels like the admission price to progressive Canada, and progressive Canadian media. Would the scandal be quite so … titillating … if it had another villain? Perhaps, perhaps not. But I see no holier-thanthous in Wente’s second brush with scandal.
Sometimes you’ve got to be pissed off. Justin Trudeau got there this week as his response to terrorism continues its remarkable evolution. The prime minister sounded legitimately angry over the horrible death of Canadian John Ridsdel at the hands of terrorists, and resolute in his statement that this country will not pay terrorist ransoms — directly or indirectly. Trudeau did not bow to the knee-jerk reaction that some of his opponents urge, he did not send in the JTF2 or pledge to carpet-bomb terrorist strongholds, but sometimes a country needs a leader to channel anger and surely there was anger — along with sympathy for Ridsdel’s family and friends — over the brutal and senseless killing of an innocent Canadian. Trudeau called it what it was, “cold-blooded murder,” a substantive change in tone from a man who, since becoming Liberal leader, has often appeared to be overshooting in his quest to provide perspective and undershooting on the question of outrage. The no-ransom policy is noble and correct. And risky. This is, in fact, a major testing of a prime minister barely six months into his job. The fate of a second Canadian being held, 50-year-old Robert Hall, hangs in the balance. Trudeau has downplayed the fear spread by terror attacks, but since becoming Liberal leader in 2013, he has
taken on the role of amateur psychologist, appeared shaken, and seemed devoid of genuine outrage. In his first substantive interview after winning the Liberal leadership three years ago, bombs had just killed three and maimed more than 200 at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, and Trudeau spoke of “root causes” of terror with the CBC’s Peter Mansbridge, leading Stephen Harper to accuse him of “rationalizing” terror attacks. In many ways, Trudeau’s default position was to rise above the fray, a mien much like that of his newfound friend, Barack Obama, who, as New York Times Maureen Dowd wrote after the recent Brussels attacks, remains “too cool for school.” But there has since been an unmistakable change. Last November, the new prime minister seemed shaken by the attacks in Paris. “These terrorist attacks are deeply worrying and obviously unsettling to people around the world,’’ he said, without specifically condemning them. A few months later, following the Brussels attacks, he found his outrage. “This cannot and will not be tolerated. Canada strongly condemns these cowardly acts.” Trudeau is no longer above the fray and he has been forced to react with resolve he lacked in 2013. But the fate of Hall largely rests with him and there can be no tougher test of a prime minister’s resolve than that. Tim Harper is a national affairs columnist for the Toronto Star. There’s likely another week or so of think pieces to gloss over, be it concerning the political and racial themes behind her short film, whether Beyoncé is finally showing vulnerability beyond her ultra-restrained persona, or, most importantly, the identity of Becky With The Good Hair. In the meantime, you can spill the tea at your next Lemonade viewing party with the actual lemonade recipe Beyoncé recites in the film. For the record here’s the original recipe, courtesy of Beyoncé’s grandmother Agnez Deréon: “Take one pint of water. Add half a pound of sugar. The juice of eight lemons. The zest of half a lemon. Pour the water from one jug then into the other several times. Strain through a clean napkin.”

Here is our adapted recipe: • 1 cup (250 mL) superfine sugar • Juice of 8 lemons (about 1 1/2 cups/375 mL), strained of pulp and seeds • Zest of 1/2 lemon (about 1/2 tsp/2 mL) • Pour water, sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest into a large mixing bowl. Stir until sugar has dissolved. Strain through fine-mesh sieve into
a large pitcher. Serve over ice. Makes 1L of lemonade. The result is a very (very!) sweet lemonade that reminds us of sweet tea, so if you’re not used to that level of saccharine add half the sugar first, then more to taste. This would also be good with a fistful of mint leaves and a few shots of bourbon stirred in. Enjoy, Beyhive!

Not to mention the sauce, which is loaded with mayonnaise, and the dense crusty bread; now you’ve got over an entire day’s worth of sodium and most of your fat and calorie intake — and this is just lunch! BOOK EXCERPT Diva Q’s Barbecue: 195 Recipes for Cooking with Family, Friends & Fire by Danielle bennett
Flank steak, made fancy Sorghum
Flank steak is the ugly duckling of the steak world. It isn’t nearly as sexy as a porterhouse, nor as attractive as a rib eye. But what flank lacks in beauty, it sure makes up for in flavour. Flank steak needs a marinade, but is an economical cut that can feed a lot of people when it’s sliced thinly across the grain.
Although referred to as sorghum “molasses” in the southern United States, sorghum syrup is actually made from sorghum grass, not sugar cane. It’s an amber, mild-flavored syrup that’s slightly sweeter than true molasses. Substitute maple syrup if you can’t find it.
Rosemary-Garlic Marinated Flank Steak
Diva Q’s (a.k.a. Danielle Bennett’s) backyard barbecue book is packed with simple recipes for casual, down-toearth family food. Get started with the six recipes you need to know most, then move to chapters on appetizers, pork, bacon (Diva Q’s claim to fame), beef, fowl, seafood, sides, salads, slaws, breads and desserts, that take you from the basics to the best the barbecue world has to offer. Plenty of meatless options are included, too.

Makes six servings Prep: 20 minutes Marinate: overnight Cook: 10 to 12 minutes
2. Refrigerate overnight, turning the bag once or twice to ensure even distribution of the marinade.
Ingredients: • 1 flank steak (about 2 lb) • Sea salt for serving
3. Prepare your grill for direct cooking and preheat it to medium- high (375°F to 450°F).
For the marinade: • 1 cup soy sauce • 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves • 2 tbsp minced garlic • 2 tbsp sorghum syrup (see sidebar) • 1 tbsp granulated onion • 1 tbsp coarsely ground black pepper (butcher grind)
4. Remove the flank steak from the marinade, discarding the remaining marinade. Grill the flank steak, turning once, until the internal temperature reaches 120°F to 130°F for rare to medium-rare, about 10 to 12 minutes. (Flank steaks can vary in thickness, so keep an eye on the steak and don’t overcook it; flank is best served rare to medium-rare.)
Directions: 1. Mix together all the marinade ingredients in a medium bowl. Place the flank steak in a 1-gallon resealable freezer bag. Pour the marinade over the flank steak, then seal the bag, squeezing to remove as much air as possible.

A potato salad you’ll want to keep all to yourself My friend Colleen would always bring a potato and chorizo salad to our potluck parties. It was so good, I’d try and put it out of reach at the back of the buffet table so there’d be leftovers. This is my grilled version of that salad that I’m now happy to share.
Grilled Potato and Chorizo Parsley Salad Ingredients: • 11/2 lb mini potatoes, halved • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • Kosher salt and finely ground black pepper to taste • 8 oz cured sweet Portuguese chorizo • 1 small bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley, leaves picked and finely chopped • 3/4 cup crumbled queso fresco (Queso fresco is a soft, unripened cow’s milk cheese from Mexico. Look for it in larger supermarkets or specialty cheese stores.) Vinaigrette • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil • 3 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard • Kosher salt and finely ground black pepper to taste Directions: 1. Whisk together all the vinaigrette ingredients in a small glass bowl, seasoning generously with salt and pepper. Set aside. 2. Prepare your grill for direct cooking and preheat it to medium-high (375°F to 450°F).

3. Meanwhile, put the potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and microwave on high until almost tender, about 8 minutes. 4. Add the olive oil and a generous sprinkling of salt and pepper to the potatoes and toss well. 5. Grill the potatoes and chorizo, turning often, until the potatoes are crisp on the
outside and the chorizo is reheated, 10 to 20 minutes. 6. Remove the potatoes and chorizo from the grill. Place the potatoes in a large bowl. Cut the chorizo into bite-size pieces and add to the bowl. 7. Whisk the vinaigrette. Add to the potato mixture, along with the parsley, and toss well. Season with salt and pepper to taste and scatter with queso fresco.

Meanwhile, stars including Rihanna, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden Smith and Serena Williams have graced the slick dining room. Yes, the new restaurant Fring’s has quickly become a Toronto hot spot since it opened last fall. This week it welcomed another celebrity, chef Bobby Flay. Owner/star chef Susur Lee says Flay will be a guest chef during a six-course tasting menu event involving local and exotic ingredients. They first met at least 20 years ago and competed against each other on the Food Network series Iron Chef in 2006 — a battle that resulted in a tie. “He’s one of those great colleagues and friends for many

For Fring’s, he created the menu but sons Levi and Kai Bent-Lee run operations. Drake is friends with Lee’s sons and stops by Fring’s whenever he’s in town. He’s also rumoured to be part-owner of Fring’s, but when asked whether that was true, Lee would only say he has an involvement. “There’s a lot support around that, let’s put it that way,” he said in a phone interview. Londell McMillan, a longtime lawyer and former manager of the superstar, declined to comment Monday to The Associated Press about whether the entertainer had a will or any other particulars regarding his estate, but added: “I want to make sure his legacy is respected and protected no matter what role I play.” Wealthy people usually create trusts to avoid the public spectacle of probate court, and it’s probable Prince did so, according to Irwin Feinberg, a Los Angeles trust and probate lawyer. The AP did not find liens or mortgages on any of his properties, which range from a sprawling 160-acre piece of grassland between Lake Lucy and Lake Ann, to a three-bedroom bungalow in Minneapolis that is home to his half brother, Omarr Baker. Prince sold over 100 million albums in his lifetime, according to Warner Music Group. And Pollstar, a concert industry magazine, said that in the years that his tours topped the charts — 10 years over four decades performing — the tours raked in $225-million in ticket sales. His best-earning touring year, when he took in $87.4 million, was 2004, the year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
If Prince filed a will in secret, it will become public after his death certificate is issued. He was not married and had no known children, but his siblings and half-siblings could share in his estate.

The Ranch strains to modernize the sitcom THE SHOW: The Ranch, Season 1, Episode 3 (Netflix) THE MOMENT: The Cheerios joke
Kelly Ripa reportedly had little warning from ABC that her co-star Michael Strahan (right), would be leaving LIVE! with Kelly and Michael for Good Morning America. Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP File
Co-host uproar settled: Kelly Ripa television
Host took brief hiatus after surprise ABC shakeup Kelly Ripa returned to her daytime talk show Tuesday after time off to “gather (her) thoughts” after learning her co-host Michael Strahan was leaving, saying the incident had started a conversation about workplace respect. She also said her bosses had apologized to her, and she’d received assurances that the “Live with Kelly and Michael” show was important to the parent Walt Disney Co. “Guys, calm down, they didn’t say anything about Christmas bonuses,” she joked after the audience applauded. Ripa was reportedly upset that she learned only a few minutes before the public last Tuesday that Strahan, her co-host since 2012, was leaving in September for a full-time job with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He works part-time on the morning news show now and executives there are looking for a way to turn around fading ratings. Ripa skipped Wednesday and Thursday’s show, and said she had a scheduled vacation Friday and Monday.
“I needed a couple of days to gather my thoughts,” she said after returning to a standing ovation from the audience. “After 26 years with this company, I’ve earned that right.” She said the time helped her gain some perspective and that “apologies have been made.” She didn’t say who apologized and ABC officials haven’t publicly admitted to blowing the transition. “What happened was extraordinary,” she said. “It started a much greater conversation about communication and consideration and, most importantly, respect in the workplace. I don’t consider this a workplace. This is my second home.” The former soap opera actress has been co-host of “Live” since 2001, first with Regis Philbin and then with Strahan. Besides the lack of communication that Ripa took issue with, the shifting of Strahan to take advantage of his popularity on “Good Morning America” sent an unmistakable message about which show was
more important to ABC’s bottom line. Yet the network surely didn’t anticipate the drama would play out in the media or how it would raise questions about when — or if — Ripa would return. ABC did not immediately comment Tuesday on Ripa’s statements. She walked hand-in-hand with Strahan onto the stage of her show Tuesday, and Strahan swiftly let his co-host stand alone to talk about the incident. “I am fairly certain that there are trained professional snipers with tranquilizer darts in case I drift too far off message,” said Ripa, who appeared emotionally taken aback by the audience response. Strahan, when she was done, said he was happy Ripa was back. “If there’s one thing I know about you, you love the show, you love the staff, you love your fans and I love you,” Strahan said. “You’re the queen of morning television.” The associated press

Colt (Ashton Kutcher), a failed semi-pro footballer, has come home to his family’s Colorado ranch to help his father Beau (Sam Elliott) and brother Rooster (Danny Masterson). They’re in their dusty front yard tossing a football. “Rooster, go long,” Colt says. “I know that trick,” Rooster replies. “You tell me to go long, then you run inside and dunk your balls in my Cheerios.” “It’s dinner,” Colt says. “I’m not gonna dunk my sack in your hot soup. I only make that mistake once.” I can just see the meeting where this series was concocted. “What if we did a traditional three-camera sitcom, like Cheers, filmed in front of a live studio audience, but made it potty-mouthed?” Judging by the audience’s uproarious reaction to the many cracks about testicles,
The Ranch is a big ‘ole slab of American Pie. contributed
backsides, crabs, and this line, after Colt reaches into a cow to deliver a calf — “That’s not the vagina I thought I’d be in tonight” — it’s working. The Ranch is a big ‘ole slab of American apple pie. Beau is a rabid conservative. His ex-wife Maggie (who presides over the show’s other set, the local bar), is a liberal hippie. Colt is their man-boy who has to grow up. But instead of ice cream on
top, it opts for bodily fluids, in a strained effort to be modern. The way the audience hoots at groaners like the one where Rooster asks if Beau wants to watch something on Netflix, and Beau growls, “What the f— is Netflix?” proves that Peak TV isn’t as sophisticated as we think. Spring SEASON
While used cars are usually a less-expensive way to get into vehicle ownership, there are a few manufacturers offering base models competitive with pre-owned. At Chevrolet, that’s the base $9,995 Spark. At that price, you could probably get a used vehicle with more options, but the Spark comes with a full warranty and, for many, is easier to finance. You don’t get all the goodies for that price, and the base Spark comes with a manual transmission, crank-down windows, no power locks, and — the kiss of death for many — no air conditioning. On the base trim, A/C comes bundled with an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), bringing the cheapest air-equipped model to $13,895. At its most expensive, the Spark tops out at $18,195. The Spark uses a 1.4-litre fourcylinder engine that makes just 98 horsepower, but the car’s
light, and matched with my tester’s surprisingly smooth stick shift, it’s decently peppy. The handling could be sharper and the turning radius is wide, but it gets you where you’re going. And, as I kept reminding myself, it’s 10 grand. Its closest competitor is the Nissan Micra, and when the Spark’s pricing was announced, Nissan dropped its tag by $10 to bring in the Micra at $9,988 and retain its title as Canada’s leastexpensive automobile. The Micra is slightly more powerful at 109 horsepower, and its sharper handling and tight turning makes it better to drive, but the Spark gives you a longer powertrain warranty and more content for the cash. It has 10 airbags to the Micra’s six, better published fuel economy, and its large touchscreen infotainment system packs in a rearview camera, phone app integration, and a USB port that the base Micra lacks. The most important thing with any inexpensive model is to be realistic about what you can and can’t live without. Then compare apples to apples, because a pricier model may ultimately be cheaper when you add the “gotta-have-it” options to a less-expensive one. Still, for many drivers, this base Spark might just have everything they need.

Mitsubishi

Four-door fix
Already sold in other markets, the sedan version of the Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact is coming to North America this spring. The Japan automaker showed the four-door Mirage G4 at a recent auto show, sporting a suspension tuned specifically for North American ride preferences. It also has bigger brakes than the Mirages sold in other countries. Other than the trunk and mildly different styling, the G4 is largely the same as the updated 2017 Mirage hatchback. The sedan also shares the hatchback’s 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels through either a five-speed manual transmission or continuously variable “automatic.” Horsepower is up four to 78 while the torque is unchanged at 74 pound-feet.

Porsche to sacrifice profit growth to fund electric vehicles Porsche is so serious about developing electrified vehicles that it’s willing to sacrifice big profits to fund the investment, the automaker says. After a $765 US upgrade to its Zuffenhausen plant, Porsche will begin building the Mission E electric luxury sports car there in 2020. Altogether, Porsche will invest $1.2 billion US to make additional electrified vehicles possible, reports Reuters. With that level of investment, “it is clear that we can no longer carry out major leaps on (financial) results,” said CEO Oliver Blume.

Stamkos returns to Lightning practice Steven Stamkos is serving as an inspiration for the Tampa Bay Lightning as the defending Eastern Conference champions attempt to make a deep playoff run without him. The team’s captain and leading scorer was back on the ice with teammates Tuesday, participating in shooting and skating drills for the first time since undergoing surgery for a blood clot discovered near his right collarbone this month. Stamkos and coach Jon
Cooper, however, stressed the two-time Maurice Richard Trophy winner is not anywhere close to being ready to face Steven the New York Stamkos Islanders in a Getty images second-round series that begins Wednesday night at Amalie Arena. The Associated Press

Austin Jackson had a two-run double for the White Sox (15-6), who stretched their win streak to five games. Zach Putnam got three strikeouts in the ninth. Edwin Encarnacion supplied
all the offence for the Blue Jays (10-12) with his 200th career home run in a Toronto uniform. Darwin Barney and Kevin Pillar each had singles and Mi-
chael Saunders hit a double in the eighth for Toronto’s only other hits. R.A. Dickey (1-3) allowed six runs on eights hits through sixplus innings in shouldering the loss. He also walked one and struck out three. Garcia put the White Sox on the board with a mammoth leadoff blast in the third inning. The Chicago DH launched a 3-1 offering from Dickey that hit the second-deck facade in centre field for a 1-0 lead. The home run was only the second allowed by Dickey this season. He gave up his third, the two-run job to Navarro, in the seventh inning to end his night. The Canadian Press

RECIPE One-Pot Dijon Chicken
Crossword Canada Across and Down photo: Maya Visnyei
Ceri Marsh & Laura Keogh
For Metro Canada This dish wins a blue ribbon since it uses lower priced chicken thighs, one pot and pantry staples. In other words, it’s a dinner trifecta. Ready in Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 30 minutes Ingredients • 6 skinless, boneless chicken thighs • salt and pepper • 1 teaspoon oil • 1 minced shallot • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1/4 cup apple cider • 1/4 cup low-sodium chicken broth Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 425°. Generously season chicken with
salt and pepper. Add 1 teaspoon oil to a large room-temperature skillet. Add chicken. 2. Place skillet over medium heat and cook, allowing meat to brown and chicken is cooked halfway through, about 10 minutes. 3. Transfer skillet to oven. Roast until chicken is cooked through and golden brown, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer chicken pieces from bottom of skillet to a platter. 4. Return skillet to medium heat. Add shallot and garlic; cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute. 3. Whisk in Dijon mustard, apple cider, broth and a bit more salt and pepper; cook for about 3 minutes. Return chicken to skillet along with juices that have settled on the platter to rewarm and then serve. for more meal ideas, VISIT sweetpotatochronicles.com
