Metro | Vancouver Delta police are warning drug users to be vigilant after seizing the highly lethal synthetic opioid W-18. Police made the bust after uncovering a fentanyl processing lab in Burnaby while executing three search warrants March 17 in Burnaby, Surrey and Richmond. It’s the first time police have reported finding W-18 in B.C., according to Sgt. Sarah Swallow, a spokesperson for Delta police. W-18 can be 100 times more toxic than fentanyl, according to Health Canada. “This is just an incredibly dangerous drug, and these dealers are taking advantage of vulnerable people because they are marketing this stuff as heroin,” said Swallow. Five people have been arrested in con-

nection with the investigation. Scott Pipping, 35, from Surrey, and Adam Summers, 27, from Delta, are in custody and facing more than 20 charges related to drug trafficking and possession and firearm offences. Charges are pending against three other people also arrested in relation to the investigation, according to Delta police. W-18 was originally developed as a pain reliever in the 1980s but has only been used recreationally in the last two years in Europe and Canada, according to Health Canada. Alberta recorded its first W-18-related death in March. Like fentanyl, W-18 is lethal even in small doses and cannot be detected by look or smell. Police warn there is no quality control for drugs sold on the black market. “We just want people to know that and be aware of that and make sure they are not using alone and they are only using small amounts and if they detect any type of medical issue, to just please call 911 and ask for help,” said Swallow. There were 201 overdose deaths recorded in the first three months of 2016 and 64 of them involved fentanyl, according to B.C.’s health officer, Dr. Perry Kendall.

Missing craft found on glacier, crew walked away David P. Ball

Metro | Vancouver Rescue authorities credit a snowmobiler’s photograph of an aircraft on a glacier for allowing them to pinpoint the location of a missing plane Monday evening near Whistler. But when a Cormorant helicopter — one of at least five aircraft involved in the daylong search — landed at the crashed plane around 5:50 p.m., its three passengers were nowhere to be found. “The aircraft was not badly damaged, but it was straddling a crack in the glacier,” said Bill Yearwood, the Transportation Safety Board’s regional manager of aviation accident investigations, in a phone interview. What rescuers did find, thankfully, was a note telling rescuers they’d walked down the glacier, according to the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria, allowing them to be found quickly in a lower drainage of the ice sheet “a couple miles” from the accident. “They were up on the glacier over night,” Lt.-Cmdr. Desmond James told Metro, “so in order to seek shelter they went down a little bit to get out of

the weather.” The pilot was 81-year-old Surrey resident Vern Hannah, who said a sightseeing trip with two friends went awry when he flew up the wrong valley and was unable to manoeuvre upward to get out of it. “We didn’t have enough power to climb out,” Hannah said, describing how he narrowly missed piles of rocks

when he landed on the glacier. “It was touch-and-go all right,” he noted. “It was a miracle.” James described searchers’ reaction to finding the crew unharmed after a harrowing

search as “definitely rewarding,” especially since more than a day had passed since the plane’s disappearance, and mountain conditions can be treacherous. “‘Excited’ is absolutely the

word I can tell you was going through the rescue co-ordination centre here, and through the crew,” James said. “More often than not, the end results are not successful for us.” Nevertheless, both James and Yearwood said it’s not recommended that wilderness crash survivors leave the scene of their accident when it’s safe to stay behind, because a vehicle or wreckage is much easier for searchers to discover than a person. “The standard answer is to stay with the aircraft,” Yearwood said, “but if they were aware they were outside where anybody would be looking for them — and after having spent a day with the thought that they could walk out — we’ve seen that before. “Given the circumstances, it’s just fortunate that everybody’s OK.” On Sunday, the crew of the small, 53-year-old plane, a Beechcraft Musketeer, took off from Pitt Meadows Airport, en route for Pemberton, before it was reported missing. But authorities said there didn’t appear to be a functioning emergency locatortransmitter on board — nor had they filed a flight itinerary with anyone else as required by Transport Canada, Yearwood said. “Which of course increased the time before they were found,” he added, “and added to their discomfort. “But even without the regulations, many of these things are just good airmanship.” With files from The Canadian Press

falls short: Advocate The University of British Columbia has unveiled its draft sexual assault policy, but a former student who filed a human-rights complaint over the issue says the document still doesn’t address her concerns. The university began working on the policy in response to allegations from Glynnis Kirchmeier and others that it delayed taking action on numerous complaints about a male student. A 12-member committee of staff, faculty and students tabled the draft policy at a meeting Tuesday and it will be open for public comment after it’s presented to the board of governors next week. The document sets out the university’s commitments and principles with regard to sexual assaults, outlines support services for survivors and details confidentiality and privacy obligations. The draft sexual assault policy does not include a new process for reporting and investigating sexual assaults, and instead refers complainants to the existing process in the student code of conduct. Kirchmeier says people who have been sexually assaulted need a clear road map of the process that will unfold after they report their attacks. “This policy does not tell a victim what is going to happen, and as a result it will not encourage people to report,” she says. the canadian press

Adoptable Dogs Vancouver helps canines find new homes Wanyee Li

Metro | Vancouver Angie Nickel and her family spent two years looking for a puppy to rescue with no luck until they found Cabo, a golden Labrador, through a Facebook group called Adoptable Dogs Vancouver. The group acts as a networking site that connects people who are looking to re-

home a dog with people who want to adopt a dog. Nickel contacted a dog-rescue society through the Facebook group. After filling out the paperwork and a home visit, her family adopted fourmonth-old Cabo, who had been rescued from a high-kill shelter in Mexico. “It’s been an overwhelmingly positive experience … we gave an animal a second chance in life,” she said.

Nickel started her search for a dog at the B.C. SPCA but getting on its adoption wait list was more difficult than she anticipated. “It was very, very frustrating … they wouldn’t approve us for a dog because we rent,” said Nickel, who lives in a 1,400-square-foot townhouse in Steveston. A veterinary assistant created Adoptable Dogs Vancouver in 2014 after realizing

many people had trouble rehoming or adopting dogs in the Lower Mainland. “Re-homing comes up quite a bit at work unfortunately,” said Ilana Goldberg, who works at Oak Animal Hospital in Vancouver. Goldberg offered to help re-home a friend’s beagle two years ago but found that listing sites like Craiglist and Kijiji did not yield enough serious inquiries.

She sought to create a community where well-intentioned people could help each other find homes for dogs. “I ended up starting a Facebook group to post him (the beagle) and that’s how it started. And it took off — I didn’t even have to promote it that much.” Adoptable Dogs Vancouver now has almost 3,500 members.

Metro | Vancouver Eye-catching visual stunts usually come easily for the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. With the federal government’s $625-billion debt on the rise — under what the federation sees as a spendthrift regime in Ottawa — what better way to “drive” its anti-spending message home than its infamous 1990s-era mobile debt ticker? There was just one problem: it couldn’t actually remember where it had left the long-retired mobile Debt Clock trailer for a planned 13,000-kilometre crosscountry road trip from B.C. to Nova Scotia, and back to Ottawa. “No one remembered where it was,” said Aaron Wudrick, federal director the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation, as he set out co-piloting a truck from

Vancouver eastward on Tuesday, dragging the debt billboard behind. “We found it in a farmers’ field in Saskatchewan and we had to patch it back up and get it road-ready again. “When the budget got balanced in the mid-’90s, we thought we’d never have to use it again.” The ticker was briefly hauled out again after the Conservative government’s high-spending first term, but five years later the Liberals’ promised infrastructure deficits have put the debt-mobile on the road again. As of Tuesday, the federation estimated Canada’s national debt at nearly $625 billion, and rising about $900 every second. To put that number in perspective, that’s $17,330.84 for every citizen — enough to buy a brandnew compact car. But not all economists oppose national debt or governments going into the red. When the Liberals tabled their first nearly $30-billion deficit budget in March, senior economists at several national banks applauded the spending as beneficial for the economy — if kept in check in the long term.

When the budget got balanced in the mid-90s, we thought we’d never have to use it again. Aaron Wudrick

Leaders push against pipeline environment

TransMountain expansion awaiting final fed decision

The previous pipeline was put in when we weren’t even citizens in our own lands. Ian Campbell

David P. Ball

Metro | Vancouver First Nations leaders whose traditional territories include Vancouver journeyed to Ottawa Tuesday with the city’s mayor to urge the government to listen to their opposition to expanding the Kinder Morgan pipeline. The delegation, with representatives of the Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam nations, was billed as the first “official joint visit” to the nation’s capital. “I live at the mouth of the Fraser River Delta,” said Musqueam Nation councillor Howard Grant, in an Ottawa press conference broadcast over Twitter. “My people have existed there since time immemorial.

Chief Maureen Thomas of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, right, and councillor Howard Grant, left, on behalf of the Musqueam Nation listen to Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish Nation speak during a news conference on Parliament Hill Tuesday. Adrian Wyld/the canadian press

“If and when that oil pipeline and tanker traffic (increases) it will almost eliminate our ability to access the sea and the resources that come from that sea.” He described how the Musqueam still “survive off the land and sea,” which has seen the band join others in

the Lower Mainland opposing the proposal. “That will be denied to us if there ever is an oil spill in that inlet and the Salish Sea,” he said. Chief Ian Campbell, from Squamish Nation, said the band continues to have “very serious concerns around in-

creased industrialization” of the Burrard Inlet within the nation’s territory. “We’ve been marginalized and alienated in history,” he said, noting that Kinder Morgan’s existing pipeline was installed before indigenous people were allowed to vote in Canada. “The previous

pipeline was put in when we weren’t even citizens in our own lands.” The federal government is expected to make a final decision on the controversial Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion in December, after the project got a conditional green-light from the National Energy Board — a review process Campbell called “fatally flawed.” The nearly $7-billion proposal would expand the existing TransMountain pipeline from Alberta’s oil sands to a terminal in Burnaby, tripling the flow of diluted bitumen and increasing oil tanker traffic through the Burrard Inlet seven-fold. The company has promised significantly increased safety measures to reduce the risk of a spill.

Shell’s shift causes doubts Royal Dutch Shell says it’s shifting away from growing its liquefied natural gas business, a move that raises fresh doubts about the future of its proposed LNG Canada project in Kitimat. The company said Tuesday the pace of new investment in LNG will slow as it moderates growth and prioritizes cashflow generation and returns on existing projects. Shell said while its integrated gas business was previously a “growth priority,” it has now reached a critical mass after completing the acquisition of gas giant BG Group in February. Oil and gas analyst Dirk Lever at Altacorp Capital said the announcement doesn’t mean an end to the company’s LNG Canada project, which could cost up to US $40 billion to build, but it could further delay development. “They may just kick the can down the road, but it’s not dead,” said Lever. the canadian press

Portrait of a B.C. internment camp history

Japanese album of World War II photos reveals life on inside The black and white picture shows teenage girls posing for the camera with their clothes neatly pressed, their hair in perfect movie star pin curls, but the background of a dilapidated Second World War internment camp doesn’t fit the image. That paradox is one of the reasons Carla Ayukawa donated her mother’s photo album to the Canadian War Museum. The pictures document some of Michiko Ishii’s young life in a JapaneseCanadian internment camp in southeastern British Columbia. “These four girls, they’re all posing, but what are they standing in front of ? It’s not a movie theatre or some kind of arcade, it’s a shack,” said Ayukawa. “It’s the irony of what’s going on around them and they’re still

Their houses, businesses and belongings were sold to pay for their upkeep. News photos of the day show a bleak picture of people behind wire fences or boarding trains or trucks bound for the camps. Many of the pictures are illustrated by Midge or signed by others. Jeff Noakes, Second World War historian with Canadian War Museum, said the album is a treasure, not only for the everyday life that it shows, but for the captions, which tell the story behind the pictures. “So many of the photographs would appear — if you didn’t know the context about them — to be friends posing for

Brace for longer lines, flyers airports

Feds urged to boost funding for screening passengers Canadians risk flight delays and even longer airport security lines unless Ottawa boosts screening funding to address growing passenger levels, industry experts are warning. “It is on the cusp of being a

real problem, with serious, serious delays,” says John Gibson, chairman of the Canadian Airports Council. Canadian airports aren’t currently facing the chronic disruptions that are increasingly angering U.S. passengers. Still, lines have steadily grown over the last few years as Canadian funding hasn’t kept pace with the 21 per cent increase in passenger growth over the last five years. The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) says, on average, it screens 85 per cent

of passengers within 15 minutes. But waits can be much longer at some large airports during peak travel times, with additional pressure potentially coming during the rush of summer travel — and the number of passengers is growing by 3.5 per cent each year. If nothing is done to address the bigger volumes, Gibson said, passenger waits could regularly reach an hour. The number of security screeners has in the past fluctuated depending on the size of govern-

ment funding. More than 6,000 agents screened 58 million passengers last year. The agency says it’s doing the best it can with the resources it’s provided by the government. An extra $29 million in the Liberal government’s first budget will help to maintain the current threshold this year. “Based on the long-term funding that we have right now, if we don’t get additional funding then, yes (lines will be longer),” said spokesman Mathieu Larocque. the canadian press

The federal government’s proposed new law on medically assisted dying is entering uncharted parliamentary waters, where the only certainty seems to be that it will not come out in the same shape in which it goes in. Final debate on Bill C-14 begins Wednesday in the Senate, where the government no longer has any control over independent-minded, less-partisan senators who appear determined to amend the controversial legislation. Among other things, senators are likely to amend the bill to ensure that all grievously ill Canadians are entitled to an assisted death, not just those who are near death. But no one knows what will happen if the government, which has rejected any substantive amendments thus far, refuses to accept Senate amendments. Will senators acquiesce? Will they fight to defeat the bill? “I don’t know — that’s the simplest answer,” said Sen. George Baker, who is sponsoring the bill in the Senate. the canadian press

Condemn sting, lawyer says Illegal police tactics during an undercover operation that led a couple to be found guilty of terrorism-related offences endanger public rights, shock the conscience of Canadians and must be strongly condemned, says a statement of defence filed in B.C. Supreme Court. John Nuttall and his common-law wife Amanda Korody were found guilty last year, but their convictions are on hold

while their lawyers argue the RCMP entrapped their clients into planting what they believed were pressure-cooker bombs at the B.C. legislature. The Mounties used “deceit and tricks” throughout the elaborate sting, read the statement of defence. Nuttall’s lawyer, Marilyn Sandford, told the court Tuesday that police aided and abetted terrorist activity by helping

the couple design, construct and transport the homemade explosives. “It matters not that the RCMP knew the devices would not explode,” she said. “The RCMP knowingly facilitated terrorist activity.” Nuttall and Korody were arrested in July 2013 after an undercover operation that began five months earlier. the canadian press

Clinton declares victory politics

Set to become first woman to lead major U.S. political party Claiming her place in history, Hillary Clinton declared victory Tuesday night in her bruising battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, ready to become the first woman to lead a major American political party and casting herself as the beneficiary of generations who fought for equality. “This campaign is about making sure there are no ceilings, no limits on any of us,” Clinton said during an emotional rally in Brooklyn, eight years to the day after she ended her first failed White House run. As she took the stage to raucous cheers, she paused to relish the moment, flinging her arms wide and beaming broadly.

Clinton had already secured the delegates needed for the nomination, according to an Associated Press tally. She added to her totals with victories in New Jersey and New Mexico, two of the six states voting Tuesday. Clinton faces a two-front challenge in the coming days. She must appeal to the enthusiastic supporters of her rival Bernie Sanders — who insists he still has a narrow path to the nomination — and sharpen her contrasts with presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. She sought to make progress on both, using her own loss in 2008 to connect with Sanders’ backers. “It never feels good to put our heart into a cause or a candidate you believe in and come up short,” she said. “I know that feeling well. But as we look ahead to the battle that awaits, let’s remember all that unites us.” the associated press

EU seeks deals to slow migrant arrivals The European Union unveiled plans Tuesday to seal agreements with African and Middle East countries in an effort to persuade refugees to stay close to home and to discourage people looking for jobs from heading to Europe. The European Commission said that the agreements would target countries that migrants and refugees leave, travel through or stay in, often on their way to Europe. The move is part of the EU’s longer-term strategy to tackle the root causes of migration

as the 28-nation bloc struggles to manage its biggest refugee emergency since the Second World War, with member states divided over what action to take. EU lawmakers immediately expressed concerns that the deals would be another attempt to outsource the bloc’s migrant woes, like the much-maligned migrant agreement with Turkey. The commission said the new partnership “compacts” would combine funds to build border, asylum and counter-smuggling capacities, as well as develop infrastructure and promote

Stanford defends handling of sex assault Stanford University “did everything within its power” to ensure justice in the case of a former swimmer sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, saying it moved swiftly to investigate and punish the student but that more needs to be done at the school and elsewhere to end sexual violence. The university banned Brock Turner from campus after wrapping up its investigation less than two weeks after the attack, calling it “the harshest sanction that a university can impose on a student,” accord-

ing to a statement released Monday. The school says it reached out to the victim to offer support and inform her of the steps it was taking. “In this case, Stanford University, its students, its police and its staff members did everything they could,” the statement said, adding that it was proud of two students who stopped the January 2015 assault. Carl-Fredrik Arndt tells CBS News that he and his friend happened to ride by on bicycles and saw Turner “aggressively thrusting his hips into her.”

He said the woman was unconscious the entire time because he checked her and she

“didn’t move at all.” “The guy stood up then we saw she wasn’t moving still. So we called him out on it. And the guy ran away, my friend Peter chased after him,” Arndt said. The 20-year-old Turner was sentenced last week to six months in jail and three years’ probation, sparking outrage from critics who say Santa Clara County Judge Aaron Persky was too lenient on a privileged athlete from a top-tier swimming program. investment. Development and trade incentives would also be offered. “We propose to use a mix of positive and negative incentives to reward those third countries willing to co-operate effectively with us and to ensure that there are consequences for those who do not,” European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans told lawmakers in Strasbourg, France. The main countries concerned are conflict-torn Syria’s neighbours Jordan and Lebanon, where around two million

Syrian refugees are sheltering. Senegal, Mali, Niger and Nigeria along the key migrant paths through western Africa are also targeted, as is Libya — where most migrants leave the African coast by boat for Italy — and its northern neighbour Tunisia. Ethiopia, where more than 700,000 refugees are sheltering, is on the list too. But some lawmakers fear the agreements, which would not be legally binding, might see money and incentives thrown at countries already overwhelmed by migrants. the associated press

CRTC stifles competition: Bernier The CRTC has discouraged competition in the telecommunications sector and should have a far diminished authority over the industry, Conservative leadership candidate Maxime Bernier said Tuesday. “It is not the role of the CRTC, it is not the role of the government to decide how this increasingly complex market should evolve,” Bernier said in a speech at the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto. “It is up to producers. It is up to consumers.”

The CRTC has stifled competition with some of its decisions, he said, citing as an example the regulator’s ruling last year that requires major Internet service providers to sell space on their high-speed infrastructure to smaller rivals at wholesale prices. That decision was endorsed last month by the federal Liberal cabinet. Bernier, a former industry minister who once oversaw the CRTC, also slammed the regulator’s recent public consultations

on broadband Internet services in Canada, calling them a waste of time and money. The CRTC said it had no comment on Bernier’s position. Bernier said the CRTC’s role as telecom regulator should be phased out and that the federal Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development take over its remaining essential functions, such as 911, while the Competition Bureau oversees competition issues.

ON THE RETURN OF A RALLYING CRY

Rape culture was a slogan that undermined its cause by being too vague. But this week, Dan Turner, the father of sex offender Brock Turner, has upended all that. “Rape culture” had become a barren phrase. Jargony and overused, chanted with abandon and often wielded with little insight, it had lately lost much of its meaning. Coined in the 1970s to describe how society implicitly condones sexual violence and blames victims, rape culture was the slogan that undermined its cause by being too vague. But this week, Dan Turner has upended all that. He has given rape culture, as short-hand, a second wind — and a snappy quote few will soon forget. Turner is the father of convicted sex offender Brock Turner. In front of a California courtroom, he dismissed his son’s groping, fingering, humping and undressing of an unconscious woman behind a dumpster as a mere “20 minutes of action.” And with that, “rape culture” is back in the discourse with renewed vengeance. Turner’s statement spawned stories and made headlines across international media when it hit Twitter this weekend, after his son’s conviction on three charges of sexual assault and the ensuing light sentence, a mere six months in jail plus probation.

Rape culture persists when perpetrators receive kid-glove treatment.

Like his son, who has never admitted guilt, Turner senior shows zero recognition of the assault

as such. He calls it the “unfortunate results” of campus binge drinking, deems it one of the “dangers... of sexual promiscuity.” There’s nary a whiff of culpability. That makes Turner the poster boy for rape-culture-condoning parents. Mashable’s Chris Taylor explained phenomenon well. “Rape culture is a thing…” he wrote to fellow fathers. “Any time you put the onus on our daughters — don’t wear that dress, don’t get drunk, don’t lead guys on — you’re perpetuating it. Any time you make a rape joke, you’re perpetuating it. And any

ing it.” Amazingly, Dan A. Turner not only thinks his son shouldn’t go to jail for ripping the underwear off a passed-out woman and groping and fingering her, he thinks his son should educate other students about sex and booze on campus. Leslie Rasmussen, Brock’s friend, was more explicit in her plea to the judge: “Brock is not a monster,” she said in a statement. “Rape on campus isn’t always because people are rapists,” she added, ludicrously, explaining that Brock isn’t a real rapist because he didn’t kidnap his

victim “as she is walking to her car in a parking lot.” The prosecutor was clearly expecting this kind of retrograde thinking when he told the jury during his closing arguments that Brock “may not look like a rapist,” being young, white and privileged, “but he is the face of campus sexual assault.” The need to make that statement is proof of rape culture’s existence. But it’s Turner, the father, who’s given it a new face. A close runner-up isn’t Rasmussen, but the judge. Judge Aaron Perksy clearly felt sorry for the convicted All-American swimmer formerly of Stanford University, the judge’s own alma mater. In announcing a sixmonth sentence, compared to the six years requested by the prosecution, Perksy said Turner had “less moral culpability” because he was drunk and let him off easy because jail would be “severe.” For that, he’s earned infamy and more than 300,000 signatures on a petition demanding he be recalled. I hope it works. Rape culture persists when perpetrators — especially white, athletic, goodlooking ones — receive kid-glove treatment from judges who follow the old adage “boys will be boys.” It endures while wellmeaning people explain away the sexual violence of their loved ones. But thanks to Turner’s “20 minutes of action,” rape culture has also returned to prominence as a war cry. It’s been given new weight, and been rooted again in reality. The truth: A father excuses every assault when he excuses the one committed by his son.

Wake up your cooking with coffee Park the skepticism — coffee pairs surprisingly well with fresh salad vinaigrettes as well as the tanginess of limes when used as a rub for grilled chicken legs. torstar news service caffeine kicks

Dinner plates full of beans can counter sleepy summer As the days stretch toward summer solstice on June 20 and the weather starts making all of us sleepy, try adding a zip to your cooking with coffee. In addition to an extra caffeine hit, you’ll also taste the warm, bitter aromas of coffee that go very well with some unlikely warm-weather dishes. It’s already a given that coffee intensifies cocoa (try adding espresso powder to chocolate cake batter) and that it’s an essential ingredient in desserts like tiramisu, but consider the flavour profile of coffee: bitter, slightly acidic and earthy. Use it to balance out citrus and vinegary flavours; complement the smoky taste of smoked meats or grilled vegetables; contrast sugary desserts like ice cream and custards (af-

fogato, anyone?); and enhance the nuttiness of caramels and brittles. Summer is all about grilling, citrus notes and using the oven as least as possible. These recipes for a coffee-infused meal will keep you buzzed well-past the sunset.

the sweetness of charred vegetables. If you’re skeptical about adding coffee to vinaigrettes, you would be far from alone but it actually pairs surprisingly well. Any vegetable will do, as long as it’s hearty enough to withstand the grill.

Grilled Asparagus Salad with Coffee Vinaigrette

(Makes 6 servings)

Coffee and asparagus have more in common than you think. In the U.S. during the late 19th century when trade routes were disrupted by the Civil War, newspaper articles suggested using the seeds inside the red berries of the asparagus plant in lieu of coffee beans. When dried, roasted and ground, the seeds apparently had the same full-bodied aroma and taste of coffee. We’re pairing crisp, grassy grilled asparagus with a vinaigrette infused with coffee to add a bitter, nutty flavour that mellows out the vinegar and compliments

Ingredients: • 1/3 cup (80 mL) olive oil, plus more for brushing vegetables • 1 tsp (5 mL) maple syrup or honey • 1 tsp (5 mL) instant coffee granules • 3 tbsp (45 mL) apple cider vinegar • Salt and pepper, to taste • 1 lb (450 g) trimmed asparagus • 2 quartered red peppers, stem, seeds and ribs removed • 1 sliced medium red onion • 6 spring onions, white parts only

Directions: 1. In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, maple syrup, coffee and vinegar until coffee has dissolved. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside. 2. Lightly brush vegetables with oil and season with salt and pepper. 3. On a medium-hot grill or a grill pan over mediumhigh heat, grill vegetables, flipping occasionally until tender and slightly charred, about 5 minutes.

Grilled Lime and Coffee Chicken Legs Lime marinades and coffee rubs are popular flavour choices for barbecues; try combining them for a complex, zesty way to flavour chicken legs. The tanginess of lime hits the tongue but then the bittersweet coffee-sugar rub starts to shine. (Makes 6 servings)

Ingredients: • 1/4 cup (60 mL) fine coffee grounds • 2 tbsp (30 mL) salt • 2 tbsp (30 mL) sweet paprika • 2 tbsp (30 mL) brown sugar • 1 1/2 tbsp (22 mL) black pepper • Juice and zest of 4 limes • 2 finely minced garlic cloves • 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken legs, trimmed of excess fat and skin, rinsed and patted dry with paper towels • Chopped cilantro, for garnish • Lime slices, for garnish Directions: 1. In a large resealable plastic bag, add coffee, salt, paprika, brown sugar, black pepper, lime juice and zest and garlic. Massage bag to mix evenly. Add chicken, seal bag and massage to marinate chicken. Refrigerate for minimum two hours or overnight. 2. When ready to cook, remove chicken from bag and

brush off excess rubs. 3. If using a charcoal grill, arrange coals on one side of grill and bring to mediumhigh heat. If using a gas grill, turn off one burner after grill has reached mediumhigh temperature. Sear chicken legs on hot side of grill for 4 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to cool side of grill and cover, flipping occasionally until legs are fully cooked with an internal temperature of 165 F (75 C), about 20 to 25 minutes. 4. If not using outdoor grill, sear legs on a grill pan over medium-high heat. Turn heat down to medium, cover and flip occasionally until fully cooked. 5. Remove from heat and transfer to serving platter. 6. Garnish with lime slices and chopped cilantro. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. torstar news service

So long Lassie, hello baby Ella animals

Pet ‘parents’ taking a page out of human name books Erin Kobayashi

Special to Torstar In April, model Chrissy Teigen announced the birth of her daughter, Luna, with John Legend. I love the name Luna, it’s feminine, celestial and easy to pronounce in many languages. It’s also the name of my dog — because Luna is clearly a dog name. It’s an even better cat name (the Harry Potter and Sailor Moon reference became so popular that Toronto Cat Rescue advised fosters to stop naming their cats Luna). Or so I thought. I began thinking of Luna’s

canine playmates and the list sounded like a kindergarten attendance sheet: Sophia, Ella, Riley, Oliver and Jack, and noticed that the top licensed cat, and even more so, dog names seemed to be taking cues from BabyCenter.ca’s most popular baby names lists. When my friend revealed that Edith was the front-runner name for her baby, I could only think of an acquaintance’s hyperactive miniature pinscher-pug mix named Edith who appeared to run battery operated. Are the days of Fido and Lassie dog-gone? While traditional dog and cat names like Buddy and Coco still rank high among licensed pets, I’m guessing their owners may be mature in age. Let’s face it, you don’t have to be a spring chicken to become a pet “parent.” And I understand the appeal of modern baby names for dog owners because unlike cat owners, we are constantly addressing them

in public. In a 2011 poll by Purina Dog Chow, 90 per cent of owners considered their dogs members of the family, so it isn’t surprising pet owners are favouring trendy baby names since, culturally, they hold a special place in our hearts (and unique space in our homes). “Companion animals are not wild animals, nor are they domesticated in the sense of farm animals. So, we have pets, which are like mini-humans to us,” explains James K. Stanescu, a lecturer specializing in animal and environmental ethics in Philosophy at American University in Washington, D.C. survey, 40 per cent of owners refer to themselves as “mom” and “dad” to their canine companions and I have noticed that descriptors like “fur baby,” “practice baby,” “first born” and “the roommate” are widely used. “I think we have slowly tended to want to see pets as more of a member of the family,” says Stanescu, “We give them more human names, as opposed to the old nicknames

that we give to farm animals. But we also avoid calling them pets. “They are fur babies, roommates, etc. We are still trying to figure out what a pet is, as opposed to a wild animal or a farm animal, both of which are categories that go back thousands of years.” While Stanescu points out that giving names to animals helps us recognize them as individuals, calling them fur

babies and roommates is a stretch — considering our pets lack basic human rights. “I think we have hard ethical choices we have to make about what it means to live with other animals that we have complete control over,” Stanescu says. “I worry that calling them fur babies or children or roommates is a way of dodging this really complicated ethical activity.” torstar news service

love it • Turbo Power • Pro-Trailer Backup Assist • Handling leave it • Slightly rough ride • Mirrors on the standard model should be bigger

No longer do you need a second set of eyes to check your trailer lights; the F-150 will do it for you. Need a buddy to hold a flashlight so you can work in the dark? Nope. The truck’s mirrormounted spotlights and bedmounted LED lights will take care of illuminating your work. Trying to back up a big trailer by yourself ? Ford’s new truck even makes that a breeze with almost no experience necessary. The truck can even give you a massage. Now, if only the F-150 could pick up the next round of beers, it might be an even better friend than most! Though its all-new aluminum body stole the headlines when the redesigned F-150 hit the market, the changes to this truck are more than just skin deep. And the strength of this package starts with the powertrain. Our test truck came equipped with Ford’s 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6, a turbocharged unit that is billed as a smaller and more economical option than the topdog 3.5-litre EcoBoost. It makes 325 hp, but burying the throttle launches the truck with much more force than the numbers suggest. In fact, gun to my head, I

might be hard pressed to tell you if it is the 2.7-litre or the 3.5-litre engine providing power when the trucks are unloaded. Besides being fast without a load, the turbos help to bring the torque on low in the rev range, providing good pulling power to get your trailer or payload on the move. The only downside to EcoBoost — and it has been since the first version of Ford’s turbocharged engines were introduced — is fuel economy. While the official ratings peg this truck at 8.1 km/L combined, seeing averages of closer to 7.2 km/L isn’t uncommon. What really stands out on the F-150 is its handling. More so than any other half-ton pickup truck, the F-150 corners nice and tight, feeling light on its feet. Big, heavy vehicles have a tendency to push wide through long sweeping corners, whereas the F-150 tucks in and urges you to keep on turning the wheel. If it was pickup truck day at the race track, the F-150 will most certainly provide the most fun and least understeer. For 2016, there is a new system that can’t be ignored; Pro Trailer Backup Assist. In short, the system allows you to control the movement of a trailer using a dash-mounted knob. And it works great. It takes the crossed wires out of reversing, with the left turn of the knob sending the rear of the trailer to the left. As my dad always told me, it’s better to work smart than work hard, and the F-150 is a genius when it comes to all those things that can make a hard day’s work breeze by.

BMW 7 Series’ super-fancy technology is next level Mike Schlee

AutoGuide.com Of course, like any good flagship luxury sedan, the new 7 Series comes with all the expected technology like adaptive cruise control, head-up display, highly adjustable front power seats and a heated steering wheel. But from there, things get a bit crazy. Available items include BMW’s night vision system,

active steering, an on-board WiFi hotspot, dual digital display screens up front and 360 view cameras. The driver can also use gesture controls to control basic infotainment system functions. Because pushing actual buttons? That’s for plebes! To keep occupants amused, there’s a 1,400-watt Bowers & Wilkins diamond sound system that includes 16 speakers, many of which can be backlit for a bit of added flair at night. And while on the topic of lighting, fully customizable accent

lighting is available as well a sky lounge LED roof that has thousands of LED lights built into the dual moon roof. Rear seat passengers can be entertained by dual seat back entertainment screens that can also be used to control many of the car’s primary functions. There is also a seven-inch touchscreen between the two rear seats that operates many of the same functions. But we’re not done yet. Completing the uber luxurious 750i are over-the-top fea-

tures. There’s the ambient air package that allows occupants to spritz one of two scents into the cabin at varying levels of strength. Then there’s the massive display key that includes a mini touchscreen to relay various amounts of information and control to the driver when not at the car. And finally, in some markets, the 7 Series can park itself into a garage remotely without anyone actually being inside the car. Why would anyone ever want to get out of the car?

From the 14-speaker sound system to adjustable air suspension to filter out most road imperfections, the 7 Series takes its tech very seriously. BMW/HANDOUT

Don Draper’s car is on the market For sale

Hyundai readying 322 km EV Hyundai will introduce electric vehicles with a longer range before the end of the decade. In a recent interview, Hyundai’s director of its ecovehicle performance development group, Byung Ki Ahn, confirmed that a 322-kilometre Hyundai electric vehicle will be introduced by 2018. Range will go even further by 2020, when Hyundai plans on adding a 400 kilometre electric vehicle to its lineup. That’s a major improvement compared to the Hyundai Ioniq EV that has a 177-kilometre range.

Love Mad Men? Love cars? Don Draper’s 1964 Chrysler Imperial is crossing the auction block. Offered by ScreenBid, the 1964 Imperial Crown convertible was used in Season 4, Episode 3 and is one of 922 Imperial Crown convertibles ever built. They’re so rare now that is it believed fewer than 200 exist today. ScreenBid brags that this 1964 Chrysler Imperial is the only Imperial to boast having been smoked in by Don Draper, when he drives it to visit the real Don Draper’s wife in California. There’s a bit of history about the car too, as many mistakenly refer to it as a Chrysler Imperial, including local DMVs when titling the car. In fact, Imperial was a separate brand after 1955, spun off by Chrysler to compete with Lincoln and Cadillac. This particular model was penned by famous auto designer Elwood Engel.

SOCCER Late heroics net Canadian women win over Brazil On a night when Canada chased a goal for 90 minutes, substitute Janine Beckie delivered deep into injury time Tuesday to beat Brazil. Diana Matheson sent a high ball towards the Brazilian goal and Beckie, from outside the penalty box, lobbed substitute goalkeeper Luciana, who had just come on as a late injury replacement. It was virtually the last kick of the game and produced a dramatic 1-0 win in Ottawa. “Tonight we showed a bit of grit to stay in the game and the resilience to go and win it,” said Canadian coach John Herdman. “We found that next gear and that’s something we’ll keep reminding ourselves when we hit the Olympics.” The Canadian Press

Crossword Canada Across and Down photo: Maya Visnyei

Ceri Marsh & Laura Keogh

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 375 F.

For Metro Canada There is no better strategy to get dinner on the table than to cook everything together. It’s why we love a tray bake, especially this one since it delivers roasted flavor for the veggies and potatoes and flakey salmon. Ready in Prep time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients • 2 new potatoes • 3 Tbsp olive oil • 2 tsp fresh or dried thyme • Salt and pepper • 4 salmon filets • 1 bundle of asparagus, washed and trimmed • 20 cherry tomatoes • Big squeeze of lemon juice

2. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment. 3. Thinly slice potatoes and scatter them across baking sheet. Season with 2 tbsp of olive oil, pinch of salt, pepper and thyme. Place in oven for 15 minutes. 4. Remove tray from oven. Increase heat to 400 degrees. Lay the salmon filets over the potatoes and add the asparagus and tomatoes. Return to oven for 10 to 15 minutes, or until salmon is cooked. 5. Remove from oven. Squeeze lemon juice over the whole pan and serve. for more meal ideas, VISIT sweetpotatochronicles.com
