Local dog rescue Pawsitive Match Rescue Foundation (PMRF) is under fire after two separate complaints have called their practices into question. Jess Reimond said she made the heartwrenching decision May 25 to return her pup Chester, whom she adopted in April 2013 from PMRF. She cited the dog’s “behavioural issues” toward her daughter. “He’s a great dog and we loved him deeply,” she said. Reimond said she was informed verbally, and again over email, that Chester would undergo behavioural assessments in the hope of having him re-adopted. She said she was told that in the worstcase scenario, Chester would be euthanized. Reimond said she asked if she could be present in that circumstance.

On June 15, Reimond received an email from the PMRF employee she’d been in contact with, stating that after “numerous assessments and vet checkups” they had to “let him go” that weekend. Reimond said she was shocked to learn through the cremation certificate that Chester had been put down May 26, while the employee continued to email her as though he was alive for weeks. “She flat-out lied to me,” she said. “What rescue lies like that and doesn’t even give a dog a chance?” James Buchanan also posted to the PMRF Facebook page, upset about his foster dog Mona, who was also euthanized. “Mona was a loving and gentle pup,” he wrote. “Rather than let her be adopted by a wonderful home, the organization decided to euthanize her.” In an email, the PMRF board of directors said while they believe in second chances for dogs, “we sometimes make the difficult decision to put public safety first.” PMRF said they didn’t, however, condone the false communications. “The misleading information is not something the organization supports, and that particular member of our group has stepped down,” they said.

Bylaw to be enforced after anonymous complaint

Trees are supposed to be for swinging and climbing ... so we put a swing on just to have fun.

Metro | Calgary An anonymous complaint has put an end to front-yard summer fun for one family in Bridgeland. This spring, Reilly McMillan, 11, and her sister Gracie, 8, convinced their parents to help them hang a swing from the mature tree in front of their home. “Trees are supposed to be for swinging and climbing, and we couldn’t climb this tree because it was too tall — so we put a swing on just to have fun,” said Gracie. Reilly said their nearest playground doesn’t have a swing set, and the next-nearest one only has a saucer swing. And everyone knows saucerswings just aren’t the same as a good old-fashioned wood-andrope swings. “We made it from scratch,” said Reilly. “We bought the wood and rope and stuff and Dad made it in the garage.” Gracie helped by decorating the swing — adding blue and white ribbons and a painted

heart that says “Swing to the sky.” “They looked up how to do the knots and how to hang the swing so it wouldn’t tear the tree,” said Gracie. The swing was getting lots

of use by the two sisters, their friends, and even random passers-by. The girls dubbed it a “little free swing,” in the spirit of the front-yard libraries that have become common around Calgary.

However, the fun will come to an end this weekend when the McMillan family takes the swing down for good. The girls’ mom, Ali, said she got a knock on the door early this week and a City of Calgary

employee politely explained they would have to take the swing down for “liability reasons.” The tree is on the other side of the sidewalk, and is therefore the property of the City of Calgary. However, Jeannette Wheeler, urban forestry lead with the City of Calgary, confirmed to Metro the city dealt with the matter as a result of an anonymous tip. “We were forced to investigate the tip because we do this on a case-by-case basis,” said Wheeler. She explained there is a bylaw that prevents people from attaching things to public trees. A swing could chafe the bark over time. “I don’t think there’s fault with the family,” said Wheeler. “They just wanted to have fun.” Ali is disheartened that her girls are going to lose something they put out for the betterment of the entire community. “To me it was just a sign of the sad state of society that we can’t have the swing on the tree,” she said.

There’s a sizzling debate on campus about whether a controversial burger chain should push patties at the University of Calgary’s MacEwan Hall food court. In May, the Students’ Union approved vendor Carl’s Jr. to take the place of Sweet & Savoury in the student-run food court with some strict restrictions on their saucy ad campaigns. But over the weekend, controversy erupted after a student posted a petition on Facebook opposing the chain’s entry into Mac Hall because of their lack of “healthy” options and history of female objectification. “It’s clear that Carl’s Jr. does not consider women as part of its demographic, nor (considered) in their business model as more than sexual objects,” read a letter written by Clare Hickie. “Not only is this offensive and degrading, but it is also painfully out of touch with the diverse and inclusive student community at the University of Calgary.” Not to go unopposed by those who love their beef, another petition cropped up asking students to welcome the chain. Jeff Branton, vice-president for Carl’s Jr. Canada said the branding is “not for everybody.” “We target young hungry guys, and young hungry guys like attractive young ladies,” he said. “We’re not ashamed that that’s who we promote to, or how we promote it.”

City orders removal of ‘graphic’ signage

Crews placed sign after they say person was clipped by car Jeremy Simes

For Metro | Calgary Colourful pedestrian warning signage was swiftly removed Tuesday afternoon after the city ordered crews to get rid of it, according to a construction worker at the site. Tuesday morning, Coun. Druh Farrell tweeted a photo of a warning sign — located outside the Burns Building in Olympic Plaza — that depicted a pedestrian

striking the windshield of a car. It read, “Sidewalk closed. Use other sidewalk.” Farrell said the sign and “the lack of foot access” shows disdain for pedestrians. But Trevor Bryan, the construction manager at the site, said crews placed the sign because a pedestrian had been clipped by a car-door mirror after not obeying the original sign, which read, “Sidewalk Closed.” “We put our own signs up this morning,” he said. “But the city said it was too graphic.” The city said it ordered crews to remove the sign due to its graphic content and that it didn’t fall within guidelines, said roads spokeswoman Brittany Kustra. Though striking, some Calgarians said the sign could be effective in reducing accidents.

Ryan Contenti, who works as a tailor downtown, said he thinks the sign is fine. “There’s nothing gruesome about it,” Contenti said. “I feel like those sidewalk-closed signs get brushed off pretty easily, so it’s not the worst sign ever.” Stephanie Ho, who also works

closing off the entire sidewalk. There is “no effort to accommodate pedestrians,” she said. Sean Somers, spokesman with the city’s transportation department, said there was no other way to accommodate pedestrians in this case, as crews are working on the building’s facade.

I feel like those sidewalk-closed signs get brushed off pretty easily, so it’s not the worst. Ryan Contenti downtown, said she thinks the sign is “pretty graphic.” “But it does get the message across, don’t get me wrong,” Ho said. “My initial thought was, ‘Oh yeah, don’t cross the road.’” But Farrell said the construction site could have better accommodated pedestrians by not

However, he said the city has accommodated more pedestrians by significantly reducing the number of pedestrian detours. Kustra said the site’s barricades were provided by the city, adding the city isn’t considering to install signs with such content in the future.

Alberta Health returned or destroyed about $3.3 million-worth of flu vaccines last year, as the province saw slightly fewer people get inoculated during the 2015-16 season. On Monday, the health department released its last report of the 2015-16 flu season, finding that 27 per cent of Albertans were immunized, close to the historical immunization rates of 30 per cent. During the 2014-15 flu season, Alberta Health said it returned or destroyed about 694,404 doses, which is equal to about $3.3 million. This past flu season, the government said it has 521,283 doses left, but has not returned or destroyed those doses yet. Reasons for vaccine wastage include product problems, short expiry dates and lower-than-expected vaccine rates. The government has also reduced its flu immunization targets to 35 per cent for the 2016-17 season, as last season’s target was 40 per cent. Alberta Health has also placed a vaccine order for the 2016-17 season at a cost of $12.7 million for 1.6 million doses. For the 2015-16 fiscal year, the government bought 1.8 million doses at the same cost. There were also 5,000 labconfirmed cases of Influenza A and B throughout Alberta during the 2015-16 season. In April, Dr. Martin Lavoie with Alberta Health said the 2015-16 vaccine was more effective than the 2014-15 shot, noting the reduced number of hospitalizations. jeremy simes/metro

NDP defends $4.4M ads Woman struck by pedestrian collision

environment

Province has spent $52.1M on ads in past 7 fiscal years Jeremy Simes

For Metro | Calgary Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips has defended using all modes of media to promote the government’s climate change plan at a cost of $4.4 million to taxpayers. On Wednesday, Phillips said the multi-million dollar summer ad campaign is necessary due to its sweeping impact after the Wildrose said the money could’ve been better spent. In fact, the government spent about $5.4 million on advertising during the 2015-16 fiscal year, a 12.9 per cent decrease from $6.2 million in 2014-15. Phillips couldn’t say if the government will decrease ad spending in the future, but emphasized that the carbon-plan

“This is a diverse province — not everyone has access to information in the same way,” Phillips said. “So that will make sure the vast majority of people can receive information. It’s important to get accurate details and

consider the plan as a whole.” In total, the Government of Alberta has spent about $52.1 million to advertise programs and budgets since the 2009-10 fiscal year. That includes about $46.7 million and $5.4 million from the Progressive Conservatives and NDP, respectively, based on fiscal years in office. On average, governments spend about $8.5 million per year to advertise plans and budgets. On Tuesday, Wildrose environment critic Todd Loewen said the NDP could’ve made better use of the $4.4 million by possibly spending it on roads, health care or education. “If they have to spend that much money to sell it, obviously Albertans aren’t buying it,” he said on Tuesday. In reply to Loewen’s comment, Phillips said, “The Wildrose Opposition doesn’t believe climate change is real, so of course they’re not going to want to communicate to Albertans about climate change. “That’s fairly rich coming from a party that would cut billions of dollars from education and health care based on their election platform.”

A woman in her early 20s was taken to hospital with lifethreatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle in the city’s northwest. EMS was called to the scene on Sherwood Boulevard at Sherwood Place NW at 6:23 a.m. Tuesday. They found a female who had been struck by a grey Honda CRV suffering from lifethreatening internal injuries. She was transported to the Foothills Medical Centre by paramedics. EMS is unaware of the factors which led to the incident. According to police, the 37-year-old female driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. There were no other injured individuals reported at the scene. Calgary police are investigating. First steps toward Olympic bid tourism

City grants committee $5M for bid exploration Brodie Thomas

Metro | Calgary So you’re thinking about bidding on the Olympics... Alright, so the IOC doesn’t have pamphlets with that title. But with a 12-2 vote Calgary City Council resoundingly gave the approval to start exploring the possibility. They’ve granted the Calgary Sport Tourism Committee (CSTA) a credit limit of up to $5 million dollars to do the exploration work. The next step is to create a bid exploration committee by August, according to Marco De Iaco, executive director of Calgary Sport Tourism Committee (CSTA). He said the goal is to give all levels of government the information they need to make an informed decision as to whether or not to make a bid. “We will be looking at all sporting venues, media facilities, accommodations and villages. We will be trying to build a plan that meets the Olympic requirements but also accelerate Calgary’s needs, goals and aspirations,” he said. He said the City of Calgary will work with CSTA to form the committee and launch the bid exploration process. The CSTA has set a deadline of Aug. 31 2017 to confirm its intent to launch a bid. If the city does go ahead, there are then various submissions due beyond that date leading up to the IOC’s decision in July of 2019. De Iaco said he believes if the city were to bid on the

Dale Oviatt, director of communications for Winsport, said while Calgary’s legacy sport infrastructure at Canada Olympic Park is good, it’s also aging. “It’s no secret the facilities were built in 1986 — 10 years from now they’re going to be that much older,” he said.

Olympic Oval This infrastructure is owned and managed by the University of Calgary, not Winsport. It is still widely used for training and major events. Although it doesn’t have the 10,000 seats the IOC has demanded of recent host cities, CSTA chair Doug Mitchell told reporters on Monday night that most seats were empty in Sochi, and he believes seating capacity could be negotiated. Sliding Track In 1988, skeleton wasn’t an Olympic sport, so the track was used only for bobsled and luge. The track can be used for skeleton. In its recent budget, the provincial government promised $10 million over two years to refurbish the entire track. Oviatt said they’ll still need about $10 million more to complete that job.

Ski Jump The 90-metre ski jump at Canada Olympic Park is no longer used. Oviatt explained that after the 1988 Olympics, the technique and equipment used in ski jumping changed. Jumpers today fly much further and would overshoot the landing area.

HOW TO STOP SNORING! ROBERTA

SEGAR Certified Laser Specialist

Your partner is sleeping but you are not. His or her snoring keeps you awake, night after night. So what do you do? Wear earplugs? Put a pillow over your head? Move to the spare room? There may be nights when you feel like shoving a sock in their mouth. Lack of sleep can effect your mood, your health, your quality of life, even your weight. If your partner snores there is a good chance you are not the only one not getting enough sleep. Frequent loud snoring is a symptom of a greater issue – sleep apnea, a potentially serious health problem.

Sleep Apnea has many health consequences! Sleep apnea is a common problem that affects the way you breathe while we sleep. The most common form, known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), occurs when the soft tissue in the back of your throat relaxes during sleep and blocks the airway. This interrupts breathing, and although the interruptions are usually brief, it can happen hundreds of time a night. It can jolt the sleeper out of natural sleep rhythms or wake them up multiple times. A person who suffers from sleep apnea will spend more time in light sleep and less time in the deep restorative sleep they need to be energetic, mentally sharp and productive the next day. Chronic sleep deprivation results in slow reflexes, poor concentration and an increased risk of accidents. It can also lead to serious health problems over time, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and weight gain.

If you have OSA you may be completely unaware of it because you probably won’t remember these awakenings. If you snore ask your bed partner to give you feedback on the sound of your breathing. Occasional light snoring does not necessarily mean you have sleep apnea, but if pauses occur while you snore, and if choking or gasping follow the pauses, these are major signs that you have OSA. If you sleep alone try recording yourself while you sleep. The health consequences of sleep apnea are reason enough to seek treatment Relationship problems that can also arise from lost sleep when you are a snorer or sleep with someone who is. Whether you have sleep apnea or attempt to sleep with someone who does, I have good news. Now there is a laser treatment that can tighten the tissue inside the mouth to open the airways. Nightlase® therapy is a non-invasive patient-friendly laser treatment that reduces the effects of sleep apnea and decreases the amplitude of snoring by means of a gentle, safe, laser-induced penetration of heat to the oral mucosa tissue. To understand how it works visualize what happens to hamburger when you put it on the barbecue. It shrinks. In the case of Nightlase, the heat is gentle enough to be used on the sensitive tissue inside the mouth, but strong enough to provide efficacious heating. It does not hurt! A full course of NightLase consists of three separate treatment sessions over a six week period. The final results of the treatment have been shown to last up to a year, and the therapy can be repeated. NightLase takes only 15 minutes to deliver and it is a highly comfortable and satisfying solution that has been clinically proven to eliminate or reduce snoring. If you currently need to wear

a breathing device during sleep, this treatment may offer significant enough improvement to quit wearing it. They say that people who snore always fall asleep first. If you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea NightLase will help you stay asleep and wake energized in the morning. If you sleep with a snorer you can finally enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep, without the pillow and without the sock.

There are other laser clinics so why choose Skinpossible? Because not all treatments work equally well. Shepherd says job a little like wrangling herd of 100 toddlers Helen Pike

Metro | Calgary These aren’t country goats, they’re city goats — City of Calgary employees, in fact. On Monday, the herd moved into its new urban digs and got straight to work munching locally grown, possibly organic Canadian thistle as part of a three-week pilot project. The city will see how the cool kids work managing invasive plant species the natural way. “We’re interested in exploring alternatives to using herbicides, for example, said Chris Manderson, urban conservation lead for Calgary Parks.

The goats are also handy in areas difficult for personnel and equipment to access safely. Grazing animals are generally restricted in the city, with the exception of Confluence Park, where the pilot is taking place. “The people walking their dogs have a big smile on their faces when they see the goats, said Manderson. That said, the city hopes dog owners can keep their pets on a leash while the goats do their thing. Jeannette Hall, the master shepherd, said working with goats is a little like dealing with mischievous toddlers — and she has about 100 on her hands. “We have dogs and horses, which are great employees, goats and a staff of three, said Hall. She said there are also volunteers who are helping the process along — and she’s thankful for that. “Getting to know your goats — they’re very intuitive, so they tune into my mood.

Group nails it on accessible home GOOD WORKS

Hearts and Hammers makes family’s life easier Lucie Edwardson

Metro | Calgary In August 2015, 12-year-old Alex’s Wist’s life changed forever when she broke her neck while trying to do a flip on a trampoline. Alex spent five months recovering in the Alberta Children’s Hospital with her mother, Amy Wist, by her side. Since then, she continues to make progress, but is ultimately confined to a wheel chair. The accident made it impossible for Alex to return to her former home as it was totally inaccessible for her wheelchair. “We didn’t have anywhere to live and I couldn’t get into my old house,” said the now

13-year-old. Amy was able to find Alex and herself a new home, but it required several renovations and modifications to make it fully accessible. Some of Alex’s friends and her school principal nominated the pair for a Hearts and Hammers renovation — and they were selected. “When I found out they were going to renovate this house so that I could live here it actually meant a lot that they were going to do that for us,” said Alex. “It’s changed my life because now I can actually get into my new house and I can move around and I can do everything I need.” Amy, a single mother, said the renovations have made things easier for both of them. “They’ve changed every-

thing,” she said. “Now Alex can do so much more on her own. “I don’t have to carry her everywhere and it’s less manual stuff and more independence for her.” John Casuga, spokesman for Hearts and Hammers, said seeing Alex be able to make full use of her house is very rewarding. “When you see somebody that is able to fully use their home and be at home, it’s the reason we do what we do,” he said. Over the last number of months Hearts and Hammers installed a porch lift, replaced all the flooring and made Alex’s bathroom fully accessible. The organization is a local non-profit that provides home renovations to families in need with mobility challenges to make their lives easier.

It’s changed my life because now I can actually get into my new house and I can move around. Alex Wist

This year, the Shakespeare Company has brought one of the Bard’s bloodiest plays, Hamlet, to Prince’s Island Park. “We are literally taking one of his darkest, deepest plays and putting it out in sunshine, in plus 30 weather,” laughed Natasha Strickey, who plays Hamlet. “That morose, sombre feeling stays with you, even when you’re watching children run across the aisle, or people having a full-blown picnic right in front of you.” The actors said the magic of Shakespeare on the Bow is energy of the crowd — both

Program helping families to heal indigenous issues

Braiding the Sweetgrass addresses trauma Lucie Edwardson

Metro | Calgary Hull Services’ Braiding the Sweetgrass (BTS) program is leading Aboriginal families towards healing, reconciliation and wellness by combining traditional aboriginal and Western methods. Kathleen Hagan, the program director said BTS has been going on at Hull for three years now. She describes it as a “cultural program with a clinical lens.” She said the program has been built with the help of indigenous elders who have helped

make sure they can accomplish the program goals respectfully. “It has to come from an indigenous world view and we had to ask ourselves how do we do this in a way that respects the culture and gets people to identify with it positively so they can begin to heal,” she said. Casey Eagle Speaker, Indigenous Resource Coordinator at Hull Services, Blackfoot elder and residential school survivor, has helped build the program since its outset. He said he’s drawn on the knowledge of indigenous people by creating a team of elders from different cultural backgrounds to talk about intergenerational trauma. “Everything from colonization to residential schools and how trauma has been transitioned from one generation to the next,” he said. “The elders are able to share their stories with them and how some of the

behaviours being made aren’t from the true nature of our culture — but became normalized through all those events.” Hagan said the name of the program came from the elders who explained that when you braid grass together it becomes stronger. “We hope these families also feel stronger by learning together,” she said. The program happens twice a year and lasts four months. She said it consists of group meetings as well as home visits. Hagan said families have expressed positive outcomes. “They’ve said they have started to understand how the impacts of trauma have affected their parents, their grandparents and in turn how it’s trickled down and affected them and how they parent their kids.” For more information visit: hullservices.ca/services/braiding-sweetgrass

Orphan oil wells

Alberta tightens transfer rules The Alberta Energy Regulator is making it tougher to transfer oil and gas well licences in view of a recent court ruling that allowed the buyer of a bankrupt company’s assets to avoid acquiring wells with high environmental liabilities. The AER says licence transfer applications will now be considered “non-routine” under temporary new measures. It added that it will refuse to approve the transfer of AER licences, approvals and permits

if the transaction results in the buyer’s ratio of asset value to the cost of its environmental liabilities falling below a minimum level. Gary Leach, president of the Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, says the new rules are a concern because they will reduce the number of qualified buyers. But he added they may be necessary to avoid increasing liabilities for the Alberta orphan well fund, an industry

financed fund that cleans up well sites for owners who can’t or won’t do it themselves. He called on the regulator to use flexibility under the new rules, adding legislation may be the ultimate solution. The Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench recently ruled in the case of bankrupt producer Redwater Energy that lenders needed to be paid back before wells are cleaned up. The regulator is appealing that decision. THE CANADIAN PRESS

National Aboriginal Day

PM bathed in smoke, before paddling in canoe in river Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in vintage form Tuesday as he took part in a ceremony marking the 20th annual National Aboriginal Day. Trudeau attended a sunrise ritual on the shore of the Ottawa River wearing moccasins and a buckskin jacket that the Prime Minister’s Office said was owned by his father, the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau. The former prime minister was known in his younger years for donning buckskin before venturing out on canoeing expeditions in Canada’s far north. As the sun rose beyond a bridge linking Quebec and Ontario, the younger Trudeau was bathed with a ceremonial smoke as part of a smudging ceremony before paddling beneath the Parliament Buildings in a 10-metre cargo canoe. The federal government began observing National Aboriginal Day on June 21 two decades ago. This year, the tribute in the national capital region took place outside Canada’s Museum of History with several federal cabinet ministers and local MPs in attendance. Trudeau didn’t speak publicly at the event, but issued a statement in which he encouraged Canadians to learn more about the country’s indigenous heritage. “National Aboriginal Day is first and foremost an occasion to celebrate the fundamental role First Nations, Metis, and Inuit have played - and continue to play - in shaping the identity of all Canadians,” the statement said.

“Coast to coast to coast, their remarkable art and cultures, significant contributions and history, are essential to our sense of nationhood.” Trudeau also pointed to a rash of recent suicides in some aboriginal communities, and the feelings of despair felt by some indigenous Canadians, as reasons for governments to “better support the well-being of children and families, improve the quality of education for indigenous students, and ensure health services meet the needs of indigenous communities.” Elsewhere in Ottawa, the Senate’s Aboriginal Peoples committee opening its doors to 12 indigenous youth leaders from

tion needs to be implemented on a nationwide scale.” Suicide has been a long-standing problem for aboriginal communities, not a more recent phenomenon, added 18-yearold Shelby Angalik from Arviat, Nunavut. “No one really likes to talk about it,” she said. “Suicide is what we go through all the time, not just now. The government focuses on what we put out (now) but

there are a lot of issues we don’t talk about … drug abuse and substance abuse and mental health.” During last year’s federal election, the Liberals campaigned on a platform that promised to boost support for Canada’s indigenous peoples, and to launch a national public inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women. “This government has a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time and I hope they will be able to achieve the goals they have set out,” said 25-year-old Caitlin Tolley, a third-year law student at the University of Ottawa who is from Quebec’s Kitigan-Zibi First Nation. Toronto police are investigating after someone posted a Kijiji ad attempting to selling a twomonth-old baby boy for $600. The ad was posted to the classified website Monday but has since been removed. The case is being handled by the police department’s cyber crimes unit. “There’s a high likelihood that this is someone who thinks this is funny, but it’s something that needs to be investigated,” Const. Craig Brister told Metro on Tuesday. The baby’s mother died “in the process” of giving birth, the ad claims. “I can’t take care of the baby myself, so I decided to post an ad up on Kijiji. The baby is male an unnamed,” it reads. “I want $600 or best offer … I just need this baby gone.” Screenshots of the ad circulating on social media evoked a strong response from users. “This has to be a sick joke. I sincerely hope it is and if it isn’t that baby is removed from the situation immediately,” wrote one Facebook user. Even if the post is a hoax, Brister said the author could be charged with mischief. However, it’s likely they would just receive a warning, he said.

Plans in the works to honour Sid the Kid Zane Woodford

Metro | Halifax Halifax regional council wants to name something after Sidney Crosby, but it’s not yet sure what. Council voted Tuesday to ask municipal staff to write a report on whether the Forest Hills Parkway can be renamed the Sidney Crosby Parkway, but many councillors argued it would be more appropriate to rename Cole Harbour Place after Crosby,

Artist launches worldwide search for doppelgangers Matt Kieltyka

Metro | Vancouver Do you, or someone you know, look like the second coming of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh? If so, give Douglas Coupland a call. The renowned Vancouverbased artist and author has launched a worldwide search for van Gogh look-alikes for his latest art piece. “I’m learning that most people have someone in their life who looks like Vincent van Gogh. It could be your next-door neighbour. It could be the guy at work. It could be you,” Coupland writes. People are asked to submit their doppelganger photos to iamvincent.com. Coupland also plans to blog at the site and share the latest entries as they come in.

The person that most closely resembles van Gogh will be given 5,000 euros and flown to Vancouver (with a guest) to have their head 3D-scanned so Coupland can create a two-metre-bythree-metre bronze sculpture of the artist. Strangely, the bust will be the first of many commissioned monumental outdoor works featuring redheads. The series, he said in a statement, recognizes “the most recent successful human mutation.” “This genetic magic is a microcosm of the way in which all life on Earth changes with time,” he explains. “I’d like to trigger discussion about new relationships between science, art and globalization.” Doupland is no stranger to larger-than-life head sculptures. He installed a seven-foot bust of himself in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2014 and encouraged people to stick their chewing gum onto it. In four months, “Gumhead” had accumulated a quarter-million pieces of gum and then went on tour to Toronto, Sao Paulo and Brasilia.

rather than the street. The report will look at options for renaming both streets and municipal properties like Cole Harbour Place. While they couldn’t agree on

what should bear Sid the Kid’s name, all councillors were clear that they feel he should be honoured. “I feel so proud to be able to say Sidney is ours,” Coun. Gloria McCluskey said during the meeting. “He’s an ambassador, he’s a mentor, he’s so

much more than just an athlete.” Cole Harbour Coun. Lorelei Nicoll brought the motion forward after Crosby’s former coach started the push last week. She said she’s heard feedback from people who don’t want to lose the name Forest Hills Parkway, so she’s open to anything that will recognize Crosby “in a significant way.” Municipal staff will report back to council on what needs to change to allow for the street renaming.

Beckhams voting to remain United Kingdom

Referendum closing in as Cameron tries to sway voters From the prime minister to sports and pop icons David and Victoria Beckham, supporters of Britain staying in the European Union urged voters Tuesday to think about future generations when they cast ballots in a referendum that has divided the nation. With the black door of 10 Downing St. offering a statesman’s backdrop, Cameron appealed directly to EU-wary older voters, saying that leaving the bloc would risk the country’s economic security — and younger generations would have to live with the consequences. “Do think about the hopes and dreams of your children and grandchildren,” he said. “They can’t undo the decision we take,” he said. “If we vote out, that’s it. It’s irreversible.” The plea came as the already heated campaign moved into its tense final days. Opponents

said the statement outside the prime minister’s residence betrayed Cameron’s worry that the referendum he called to settle Britain’s place in Europe could end with the country walking away from the bloc. Steve Hilton, a former Cameron adviser who now backs a “leave” vote, said Cameron had been “wheeled out by rather panicky spin doctors” to appeal

for votes. Cameron seemed to direct his appeal at those who grew up in the after-shadow of Britain’s imperial period, in a nation that had stood against Nazi tyranny during World War II. Polls suggest these voters, many of them Conservatives, are more likely than younger Britons to reject the pan-European EU project. Cameron tried to assure

them that Britain remains a great country — even if it is part of a 28-nation bloc — and that being in the EU allows the country to promote the values it holds dear. “Brits don’t quit,” he said. “We get involved, we take a lead. We make a difference. We get things done.” Cameron acknowledged that many Britons didn’t vote for him

and don’t like him. The “remain” camp also got a boost from more popular — and populist — figures when soccer star David Beckham and his designer wife Victoria added their voices to the EU cause. “For our children and their children, we should be facing the problems of the world together and not alone,” he said. Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham later registered her view by posting the symbol of the “Stronger In” campaign on her Instagram page. The “Leave.EU” group had suggested that Victoria Beckham was a supporter of their side based on a 1996 interview with The Spectator in which she was quoted as deriding Brussels bureaucrats and saying that “we must keep our national individuality.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Obama denounces failure on gun deal Jordan shuts borders President Barack Obama is denouncing the Senate’s failure to pass gun control measures in the aftermath of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida. Obama says on Twitter that the Senate failed the American people and that gun violence requires more than moment of silence. The White House has said previously that tweets from his account are from Obama himself. White House spokesman Josh Earnest says the vote is “a shameful display of cowardice” He told CNN on Tuesday that

the Republican-led chamber’s blocking of four gun control proposals Monday does nothing to keep extremists from acquiring guns. Earnest said lawmakers lament gun violence but “don’t do anything about it.” He said that while no bill can prevent all gun violence, “why wouldn’t we do more?” Elsewhere Tuesday, a moderate Republican senator sought broad bipartisan support for a compromise to block gun purchases by some suspected terrorists.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would allow a vote on the proposal by Sen. Susan Collins, but stopped short of endorsing the measure itself. The package seemed to face an uphill climb for the 60 votes it would need, thanks to the hurdles of election-year politics and opposition from the National Rifle Association and Gun Owners of America. If we can’t pass this, it truly is a broken system up here,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Iraqi forces don’t control all of Fallujah Iraq

Most of cleared terrain in south of city, U.S.-led coalition says Only a third of Fallujah has been “cleared” of Daesh militants, the U.S.-led coalition said Tuesday, days after the Iraqi government declared vic-

tory in the city west of Baghdad, which was held by the extremists for more than two years. Other parts of the city are “contested,” said U.S. Army Col. Christopher Garver, the Baghdad-based spokesman for the coalition, with clashes underway between Iraqi forces and Daesh fighters. Most of the cleared terrain is in the south of the city, and “clearing operations continue outward from

the city centre,” Garver added. Iraqi forces pushed into the centre of Fallujah on Friday, retaking a government complex and the central hospital. That evening Brig. Gen. Haider al-Obedi, with Iraq’s special forces, told The Associated Press his troops controlled 80 per cent of the city. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Friday that Fallujah had “returned to the embrace of the nation,” and

that remaining Daesh pockets would be “cleaned out within hours.” But in recent days there have been persistent clashes between Iraqi forces and Daesh fighters holed up in dense residential neighbourhoods along the city’s northern edge. “What it looks like is (a Daesh) defensive belt around the city with not-as-stiff defences inside,” Garver said. Fake suicide belt sparks alert at mall A man claiming to have been kidnapped and outfitted with a bomb belt shut down a section of central Brussels during the Tuesday morning rush hour, but a bomb squad found only salt and cookies in the belt, the Brussels prosecutor’s office said. The man, identified only as J.B., was taken in for questioning. Prosecutors said he had a criminal record and a history of psychiatric problems. Brussels prosecutor Rym Kechiche said authorities were investigating whether the incident around the City 2 shopping mall had links to terrorism or whether it was a hoax. A second man, who is suspected of driving J.B. to the scene, was also being questioned. J.B. phoned police at 5:30 a.m., saying he had been abducted and fitted with an explosive device that could be detonated remotely by another person, Kechiche said. J.B. recently informed police that he had been enlisted to join the Daesh extremist organization in Syria, but Brussels prosecutors weren’t able to prove or disprove his claim, Kechiche said. Amid the alert, Prime Minister Charles Michel changed his morning program and a meeting of the Belgian crisis centre was called. You all are responsible for the hateful

environment that created the attack in Orlando.” Gunman Omar Mateen had expressed sympathy for Islamic extremists before his rampage left 49 people dead. Market in a shipping container Wanyee Li

Metro | Vancouver A Vancouver chef and entrepreneur is creating a new public food market made out of shipping containers that aims to help customers connect with local makers of food, from farmers to chefs. The project is the brainchild of Chris Jerome, founder of Hawkers Market, a series of popup events he describes as “underground food markets.” But Hawkers Wharf will be a permanent 100,000-square-foot waterfront site and feature more than 40 food producers at any given time, said Jerome. “They’re all local businesses, they’re all from Vancouver,

all focused on very traceable foods,” he said. “They’re encouraged to do their food in a sustainable way. That’s one of the mandates of the market.” The site will also feature an incubator kitchen for chefs to connect and test out their products before bringing the product to customers. “It’s such a needed resource in the city where new food businesses can come and they can connect and they can learn from other cooks.” The incubator, called a coworking kitchen, will support entrepreneurial chefs who want to start their own product line. “People looking for places to take their ideas to and then create a business out of it and

then also get the customer sales and validation.” Shipping containers have been used to create housing in Vancouver, but Jerome wanted to take that idea one step further and create an entire marketplace with the modular structures. The containers are easily customizable and can suit any restaurateur’s needs, whether they make tacos or pizzas, he said. “The reason why we chose shipping containers is because these are modular template businesses that can be operated by food entrepreneurs.” Decommissioned shipping containers are also economical building blocks that are easily transportable. “We treat them very much like Lego blocks.”

Rosemary Westwood on HOW TO BE A WIFE

SO NOW WHAT WILL ‘I DO’? I’ve spent my adult life identifying as an uncompromising feminist, but in preparing for marriage and its innumerable compromises, I’m forced to figure out how to pick my battles It’s a strange thing to be on the brink of “wife.” Over the last two years, as I have fallen in love and become engaged, I’ve had to face the idea of marriage, an institution which, though released from its former function as a means of owning a woman or legally raping her, remains awkward for the liberated woman. There seem to be three in this relationship: Myself, my fiancé, and my feminism. And while the latter played a clear and dominating role when I was a single woman, it has seemed unequipped for — even hostile to — love. That has sparked a genuine period of panic and doubt: How does one square her feminism with “the wife”? Statistics don’t help. Excerpting her new book, All the Single Ladies, in New York magazine this spring, Rebecca Traister detailed how married women’s earnings in the U.S. trail single women’s by a wide margin. In Canada, married men outearned married women by nearly $20,000 on average in 2008. And for couples with kids, even when both parents are working, Canadian women in 2010 were spending at least 20 hours a week more than men on unpaid child care. This is not far from where we were a decade ago. In 2004, in her book The Meaning of Wife, the writer Anne Kingston described how wifeliness remained a useful tool to define women, and to shame and coerce them into socially acceptable roles. “A lot of the themes haven’t really changed, in fact they’ve kind of amplified,” Kingston told me

recently during a chat for my new podcast, called Nth Wave. Among them: The wedding-industrial complex, which sells marriage as a woman’s ultimate dream; the battle over women’s unpaid and undervalued domestic work; and the denunciation of singleness as innately selfish. Never mind the new era of fetishized

kept women. “I couldn’t have imagined the Real Housewives franchise,” she said with a laugh. Kingston told me that when she was writing the book she was really fascinated by what she saw as a calcified notion of what a wife was. “Women I knew didn’t want to become wives, wife

was a dirty word, yet at the same time most women became wives and are wives.” Around that time, I was graduating high school and heading to university. I had been assuming feminism was a dead cause, as I foolishly told one professor. It’s a story I think of often, because of how unnervingly little I knew about what I

The battle of the buckskins

. Early Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau participated in a canoe ride

wearing a buckskin jacket that the PMO said belonged to the PM’s father, Pierre Trudeau. The elder Trudeau, we scarcely need remind you, made a signature out of the buckskin look: The image of Pierre rocking tan fringe while paddling a canoe on some remote Canadian waterway is this country’s answer to John F. Kennedy and his family at the compound in Hyannis Port. Political considerations aside, we left it to you, the readers, the settle the equally important sartorial question.

We asked: Who wore the buckskin better?

didn’t know. My professor was nonplussed, responding with something to the effect of, “Just you wait,” and planting doubt. In one political science course, feminist theory took up a thin, measly chapter, and I noticed. In third year, I took a queer studies class that sent me into furious debates with my poor father, whom I forced to be a foil for the epiphanies tossed out in class. I had been that girl who fought boys on other girls’ behalf, and I became that woman who took every chance to fight what I saw as the patriarchy. In my ensuing years as a single feminist, it was me-against-the-world, and I never noticed how often feminism itself was framed in that hyper-individualized, confrontational way. The message was always to guard against lurking sexism. To expect to not only to fight for your own place it in the world, but also to then defend it fiercely. To not give an inch — let alone your whole self. A marriage, however, can’t operate like a war zone. Giving in, even giving up, will be required, because it’s a community. And feminism, particularly the form of it that’s ascendant in our society right now, focused as it is on fighting poverty and sexual violence and illuminating the intersections of race and class, doesn’t offer much help. The very word, “wife,” as Kingston said during our conversation, still holds that “beta” connotation. And as I set out to become one, what concerns me most is how I might, somewhere down deep, believe in that connotation myself. What does an “equal” marriage even look like? And if the women at Harvard, and women everywhere really, could enter into relationships expecting equality and then still find that they make less money, do far more chores or end up

with half-realized careers — how could I possibly assume I’d escape the same fate? Perhaps I won’t. But there are opportunities in intimate life. I can’t fix societal expectations. But I can influence the structures of my own marriage. It’s an act of faith and hope I’m willing to take, for love. I believe I can choose my own definition of wife. I can imagine a more egalitarian family. Others already are. This week, the Journal of Marriage and Family released details of a new study that found couples with a “more egalitarian division of labour” have more sex. Here’s hoping equality always feels that good. Search for ‘Nth Wave,’ Rosie’s new podcast about women and the media, on iTunes, Stitcher and Soundcloud.

show your pride taste the rainbow

There are more ways to “taste the rainbow” than with a package of vending machine candy. Why not a bagel? Or on the top of a morning latte? Yes, LGBTQ Pride season is in full swing across Canada, with Calgary Pride kicking off Aug. 26, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy these colourful treats all year long. Here are a few to inspire you. torstar news service

Bagels New York’s The Bagel Store unearthed the rainbow food trend this year when it went viral online for the “rainbow bagel.” Owner Scot Rossillo and his team flatten neoncoloured mounds of dough on top of each other, then slice and roll them into bagel circles. Earlier this year, The Bagel Store was selling up to 800 of the brightly coloured bagels each day. Inspired by the success of its fellow bagel maker to the south, Montreal shop REAL Bagel Inc. now serves rainbow bagels, too. And on the west coast, Vancouver’s Rosemary Rocksalt is adding colour to its repertoire.

Lattes Caffeinate with some flare and order some rainbow latte art, colourful designs made with food dye added to steamed milk. Stuart Ross of Bull Dog Coffee near Church and Gerrard streets in Toronto has been pouring colourful flowers and hearts since April, inspired by Las Vegas coffee shop Sambalatte.

Grilled cheese Cake Cake is a Pride staple. Wanda’s Pie in the Sky on Augusta Ave. in Toronto will be offering rainbow cakes and cupcakes at its Kensington Market shop. The treats, dressed with sprinkles and covered in a white buttercream frosting or chocolate ganache, have seven layers, each with a different flavour and colour. Want to try making it at home? MarthaStewart.com has a great recipe for a six-layer rainbow cake with a buttercream ice cream.

Forget bottled food colouring. The chefs at Grill My Cheese in London, England, opt for beetroot, arugula, roasted onion, goat cheese and truffle oil to make their oozy rainbow grilled cheese.

Hot dogs Throw a sausage fest with a dough-wrapped hot dog rainbow. Blogger Beth Jackson Klosterboer with Hungry Happenings covered diced hot dogs in Pillsbury croissant dough sheets brightened with food colouring. She curled the rows into a rainbow shape and put a “pot of gold” dish of mustard at the end.

Nutrition health care

Diet advice, just for the ladies Do women need a special food guide just for them? The Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada seems to think so. It published a 65-page guide for health-care providers about giving nutrition advice to women. The collaboration between dozens of experts and professional associations contains a lot of common-sense advice: telling doctors to promote “a

balanced and varied diet higher in vegetables, fruit, whole grains,” and reminding them that “Sensitivity is required ... in terms of language used to communicate with patients about their weight.” The guide includes updated research on the relationship between heart disease and saturated fat intake (it’s not as strong as once believed) and focuses heavily on nutrition as it relates to reproduct-

ive health. It recommends pregnant and nursing women get enough folate, calcium, vitamin D and beneficial fats from fish. Shouldn’t doctors know this stuff already? Well, yes. But as obvious as some of these recommendations seem, recent research has suggested there’s room for improvement in

the amount of nutrition education primary care providers, such as family doctors, get during their training. Genna buck/Metro

New research points to the problem of ‘social jetlag’ Genna Buck

Metro Canada You grab a granola bar on the way out the door, eat a yogurt instead of lunch, then finally tuck into a proper dinner and half a bag of chips after you stumble home at 9 p.m. Sound familiar? Irregular eating patterns because of busy, unpredictable work and school schedules are a reality for many across the Western world, including Canadians. They may be causing “social jetlag”: disturbances in the internal body clock, also called the circadian rhythm. Many processes your body uses to break down and use energy from food are part of the circadian clock, following a predictable daily cycle. New research suggests messing with that cycle — by eating and sleeping willy-nilly — could be a recipe for health problems. Two papers published Tuesday in the journal Proceedings of the Nutrition Society collect past studies about how the timing of meals throughout the day affects overall health. One looked at the impact of erratic eating on heart health and metabolism. The other in-

vestigated how the timing of meals impacts people’s ability to maintain a healthy weight. The conclusions were tentative. More research is needed. But the findings boil down to this: Some old-fashioned nutrition wisdom dispensed by grandmas everywhere turns out to be right. Firstly, three square meals a day might just keep the doctor away. Two studies that randomized participants to either an irregular or regular diet found the regular eaters had lower peak insulin and lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, indicators of heart health. Secondly, according to nutrition scientist and study author Gerda Pot, “There seems to be some truth in the saying ‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper”: Studies suggest a clear link between obesity and consuming more calories later at night. In the U.K. and U.S. — global obesity hotspots — most people increase their calorie intake through the day. The slimmer French tend to eat larger lunches and small dinners. The collected studies also contained no evidence that eating small meals throughout the day, a common dieting tip, reduces obesity. In fact, it seems the opposite is true. So science says we should eat fewer meals, on a regular schedule, and get more of our calories earlier in the day. Here’s a delicious thought: One weapon against the obesity crisis may just be brunch.

Rock Creek Dry Apple Cider From: Alberta Alcohol: 5.5% This fruity, fragrant, not-toobubbly cider is a favourite on the west coast and the Prairies. Its notes of vanilla and cinnamon pair perfectly with cheeses like cheddar, gouda and brie and the smoky flavours of pulled pork or sausages.

What’s old is brewed again: The drink of summer 2016 has a very 1716 feel to it. Humble apple cider, the brew of choice during Canada’s pioneer days, is back in a big way. The naturally gluten-free fermented fruit drink, often called hard cider in North America, is hydrating, bubbly and slightly sweet. Here are five rising cider stars. / . @ . genna buck metro genna buck

B.C. Tree Fruits Apple&Hops

From: B.C. Alcohol: 6% This rising star from B.C. is hopping on the trend of adding hops to cider for a fusion of bitter beeriness with sweet cider taste. It’s dry and tart with a creamy gold colour and hints of grapefruit.

Brickworks queen street 501

Pommies Dry cider From: Ontario Alcohol: 5% Pommies is a light, crisp refreshing summer alternative to white wine or coolers. It goes down easily with summer fruits and makes an intriguing addition to a bellini with your favourite cognac-based fruit liqueur.

From: Ontario Alcohol: 5% As Toronto’s Brickworks Ciderhouse was recently bought by the big-box Canadian Mill Street Brewery, this slightly sweeter cider is showing up in more stores than ever. Its flavour, with notes of honey, is perfect for summer sipping on the patio and makes a refreshing alternative to dessert wine.

CiDeR’s sWeeT Rise

William’s sir Perry Pear Cider From: U.K. Alcohol: 6% Don’t like them apples very much? Try a fruity import from across the pond. Very bubbly and fairly sweet, this pear cider with hints of peach and apple tastes best over lots of ice.

“Cider is in this perfect position between craft beer and wine,” said Thomas Wilson, chair of the Ontario Craft Cider Association. Wine is too strong for many, he said, and beer makes a lot of people feel bloated. But cider hits that sweet spot, clocking in between 3 and 10 per cent alcohol by volume. Sales of craft cider have grown by 54 per cent over the past year just in Ontario. For a long time, cider just wasn’t cool. “It was what farm workers drank after work,” Wilson said. Now the trend’s reversed. “People are getting away from fine dining,” Wilson said, in favour of “pub peasant food” that goes great with cider.

Equivalent to two Arby’s Regular Roast Beef Sandwiches in fat. These salads are classic pairings for burgers and hot dogs at summer BBQs. As tasty as a creamy potato salad is, it’s one to skip — the mayo-based dressing packs on the fat and calories; it also won’t last long in the summer heat. When picking a coleslaw, make sure it’s in an oil & vinegarbased slaw. This way you’re only getting a third of the fat and about half the calories.

Justified’s dialogue is a character all its own THE SHOW: Justified, Season 5, Episode 4 on Shomi THE MOMENT: The conversating

U.S. Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) enters the bar owned by his old frenemy, career criminal Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). “I’m afraid you caught us with a closed sign up,” Boyd says. “Allow me a moment to collect my wits such to reply,” Raylan says. “I’m overcome trying to factor how many weapons you, a felon, are armed with.” “I’m not armed as such,” Boyd protests. “Just transporting this legally procured hunting implement from point A to point B.” “We have a more pressing concern,” Raylan says. “I understand Wade Messer worked principally for you.” “Your use of the past tense gives me some sense of foreboding,” Boyd says. “The man’s wandered some off the radar,” Raylan says. “And what leads you to surmise he has continued affiliation

with me?” Boyd asks. This conversating (as folks ’round here call it) meanders on for some while. Eventually it lands on what Raylan wants, Messer’s cellphone number. On other shows, this scene would be two lines long. But Justified comes most deliciously alive when these two are in a room together, circling each other like lazy mountain lions. It’s the Olympics of who can drawl more softly, spin prettier prevarications, eyeball each other more calmly.

Nothing establishes Justified’s backwoods Kentucky mise-enscène better than its dialogue. Right away, you know who its characters are: people who don’t read many books but have one in common, the Bible. Their affiliations are tribal, but they speak the language of sermons. Their dialogue is a character all its own. Johanna Schneller is a media connoisseur who zeroes in on pop-culture moments. She appears Monday through Thursday.

Points • Available in Pure White and Stonewashed Blue Metallic. • Just 143 allocated in Canada for 2016, and then that’s it — no more Denim Convertibles. A limitededition Denim Sedan arrives in 2017.

You’re just heading out in your Canadian Tuxedo, a.k.a. blue jeans paired with a denim jacket, but something’s wrong. You’re thinking maybe you need more cowbell, but that’s not it. Then it dawns on you. You have a fever, and the only prescription is more denim! Enter the special edition 2016 VW Beetle Denim. Just what the doctor ordered. It may not have actual denim anywhere near it, but the spirit of the fabric is what it’s all about. Witness the Stonewash Blue Metallic paint job, the convertible top and seat covers that mimic the look of denim, seatback pockets that look like the pockets on your favourite pair of jeans (right down to the red tab), and the colour co-ordinated “brushed aluminum” look dashboard. The exterior has been tweaked to take you back to that groovy time back in 1970s, when denim ruled every-day fashion, like a casual dictator. Check out those ’70s-era “dog

dish” wheels. All this extra nostalgia plied on a nameplate already rampant with nostalgia could have been a kitschy disaster, but the Denim is one of the best looking “new” Beetles models out there, at least to these eyes, and to the eyes of my significant other, who is usually ambivalent about any vehicle design, no matter what the vehicle genre or price point. (“That? That costs eighty grand? No thank you.”) Underneath the denim treatment is a standard VW Beetle convertible, and that means a decent, but not an overwhelming driving and handling experience, a pretty tight rear seat, restricted rearward vision, and a very small trunk, which is further compromised by its responsibility to house the back cover that goes over the roof when it’s down. The seats are very comfortable and supportive, and the new touch screen, rear camera, and apps for Android Auto and Apple Car Play, give the Denim a very modern and classy feel behind the wheel. The Denim is meant to be a fun, and the fun goes up several notches whenever you press the button that powers the roof down — in less than 10 seconds. When it’s that easy and quick to get the roof down and up, you’ll surely do more open-air motoring than you would otherwise.

Norway to make gas-powered cars illegal

Tesla shipping shades to help block the sun

One country is making the move to ban sales of gasolinepowered vehicles. According to a new report, Norway’s four main political parties have come to an agreement on a new energy policy that would result in a ban of gasolinepowered car sales as early as 2025. Making the law even more interesting is the fact that Norway is currently one of the world’s largest oil exporters. Jason Siu/Autoguide.com

Tesla is shipping a large piece of mesh out to owners of the Model X crossover to help block the sun. That’s because the windshield on the Model X is quite large, extending above the driver and front passenger’s heads. Model X owners had previously complained of being blinded by sunshine most of the day.

Ghostbusters’ new ride a hearse There are a lot of new things happening with the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. Along with an all-female cast for its main characters, the new Ghostbusters will change how you see Ecto-1 for years to come. The original movies used a 1959 Cadillac ambulance, and the new Ecto-1 comes in the form of a 1982 Cadillac hearse. In a way, it’s quite the opposite from the previous Ecto-1, considering an ambulance’s main priority is to save people from dying, while a hearse transports people who are already dead. The story goes that the new team gets a hold of the hearse, which is borrowed from Patty Tolan’s (Leslie Jones) uncle, who runs a funeral home. Jason Siu/Autoguide.com

Clubman ALL4 Scrambler

MINI concept shows off-road attitude

In brief

MINI wants you to head offroad in its latest concept, the Clubman ALL4 Scrambler. The little off-road wagon takes its inspiration from the BMW R Ninet Scrambler motorcycle, giving it a ready-for-adventure look thanks in part to a slightly lifted suspension. Large, knobbly off-road tires are fitted along with a luggage rack to make sure you can cart your belongings with you into the wilderness. The car is finished in Frozen Gray, also borrowed from the BMW motorcycle, while circular headlights are a direct nod to that model.

2016 Chevy Malibu Aces IIHS Crash Tests The 2016 Chevy Malibu has been named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the U.S.based non-profit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The car scored the top “good” rating in all of the crash test categories, including in the tough small overlap test. To gain the “Plus” moniker, a car must score at least an “advanced” rating for front crash prevention, which the Malibu exceeded with a “superior” rating. In testing, the Malibu totally avoided a collision when run at an obstacle at 19 km/h.

Customer satisfaction a longstanding tradition Car dealership owner proud of building thriving business based on the Golden Rule "My father had been a used car dealer in Calgary for many years and I grew up in that environment but knew next to nothing about the new car business. So when I had the Datsun opportunity, I knew it would be a steep learning curve and my best chance at success would be to hire experienced people with great character, give them a philosophy to work by, and then motivate them to practice it all the time, every time. It’s a philosophy that was handed down from my father — you’ve got to treat people the way you want to be treated. It’s the Golden Rule.” That focus on customer satisfaction, which permeates every aspect of how the business is run, has delivered. Brasso Nissan has been the leading seller of Nissans Canada-wide, several times over the years. It also received the prestigious Nissan World Leader Award in 2008. “Over the years, we’ve had over 1,000 employees,” Brasso said. “Somehow all of those employees, bless their hearts, bought into that theory and they were committed to doing it each and every day.” The dealership got its start when Brasso purchased a local Datsun dealership in 1969. Currently, the business sells more than 1,000 new cars a year and more than 700 used. Brasso has long believed in the value of supporting the community. You can find Brasso’s

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre says he’s ready to return to the octagon. The 35-year-old Canadian fighter told the podcast MMA Hour that he’s ready to come out of retirement in an interview on Monday. St-Pierre said things still need to be ironed out with the UFC, however. He hasn’t fought in three years since beating Johnny Hendricks for his ninth straight welterweight title defence. St-Pierre stepped away from the octagon after that fight. He then tore his ACL in 2014. “I’m an emotional guy,” StPierre said. “My agents, even before I came on the

Top prospect a product of expansion into Arizona About a year before Auston Matthews was born, professional hockey arrived in Arizona. He took in his first Coyotes game as a two-year-old, and his gaze never strayed far from the ice. “From a young age,” Matthews said, “I wanted to be an NHL hockey player.” Learning to skate might never be a top-of-the-bucket-list item for the youth of the American Southwest, with a prohibitive climate and a scant tradition, but hockey has been on the rise in the Phoenix area since the franchise relocated from Winnipeg in 1996. The team has struggled financially, with attendance at the suburban arena in Glendale frequently landing near the bottom of the league, but the embodiment of the sport’s expansion will be on stage Friday at the NHL draft. Matthews is expected to be the first pick by the Toronto Maple Leafs. “It’s what you think about since you were a little kid,” said Matthews, a six-foot-two, 210-pound centre who joined the U.S. national team development program three years ago

I’m not getting any younger. I’m in the peak of my career and if there is a shot, there is another goal, another run, I better do it and do it quick, because it is time to do it now.”

He could have picked baseball, which his father played in college, but the presence of the Coyotes spawned an admiration of players like Danny Briere and Shane Doan and an appreciation for the Zamboni. Matthews was on a travelling team by age eight, heading to tournaments in Chicago, Detroit

and Canada where the game is a well-established pastime. “A lot of people, when they hear you play hockey and you’re from Arizona, kind of have this mindset where they don’t even think there’s hockey down there,” Matthews said, “but I never really thought about it too much as far as that goes. I always had a goal to make the NHL. It doesn’t matter where you’re playing.” The Associated Press

Engelland: Vegas is ‘like any other city’

St-Pierre has won his last 12 fights.

The bright lights, endless buffets and blackjack tables of the Las Vegas Strip get old pretty quick, according to Calgary Flames defenceman Deryk Engelland. If anyone understands what the NHL might look like in the Nevada desert it’s Engelland, who’s lived in Vegas with his family for the last 12 years. Born in Edmonton, but raised in a tiny northern B.C., town, Engelland got his first taste of the city as a 21-year-old playing for the now-extinct Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL. At first he was intrigued by the excitement of the city, and the Strip

and places not to go. I think it’s just like any other city.” NHL players will soon get a taste of Vegas life with the league’s board of governors expected to approve an expansion team for the city Wednesday. NHL coaches believe the nightlife question will have to be addressed, especially the first time through. “I flew in here and I’m going: ‘How would I handle this?”’ said Barry Trotz, the Washington Capitals head coach and nominee for the Jack Adams Trophy. “It’ll be very hard to keep teams focused the first time through.” the Canadian Press

Wonderboy jumps to top of rankings Stephen (Wonderboy) Thompson has replaced Rory (Red King) MacDonald as the UFC’s No. 1 welterweight contender after his weekend win over the Canadian. MacDonald (18-4-0) fell to No. 2 in the rankings. Thompson (13-1-0) won a unanimous five-round deci-

sion over MacDonald, a native of Kelowna, B.C., who fights out of Montreal, on Saturday in Ottawa. MacDonald’s future with the UFC is uncertain given the Thompson fight was the last on his current contract. He may also need surgery to repair a broken nose. The Canadian Press

IN BRIEF NHL salary cap rises to $73M The salary cap for the 201617 NHL season will be $73 million, up from $71.4 million. The league and NHL Players’ Association announced the cap number Tuesday night. The cap floor, or the minimum amount a team can spend, is $54 million. It was $52.8 million last season. The Canadian dollar was one reason why league revenues sagged, preventing a larger cap increase.

Croatian jubilation Ivan Perisic scored in the 87th minute as Croatia stunned Spain in a 2-1 comeback victory Tuesday to finish atop of Group D at the European Championship. Perisic’s winning goal gave Croatia its first victory over Spain in 22 years and ended its unbeaten run at a European Championship that stretched back to 2004. “The team spirit helped us and we were fighting until the last minute,” Perisic said through a translator. “I think we can go far now. If we play like this we can go to the very end.” Defeat means that Spain will now meet Italy in the round of 16 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. Croatia will play one of the third-place teams in the northern French city of Lens. It had all started so well for Spain, when striker Alvaro Morata put his side ahead in the seventh minute, redirecting the ball into the net after a shot by midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Nikola Kalinic equalized just before halftime with a nice backheel flick that beat Spain goalkeeper David De Gea at the near post after Perisic delivered the cross from the left. Perisic scored with a low leftfoot shot, finishing off a fast counter attack. In Tuesday’s other Group D matchup, Turkey defeated Czech Republic 2-0. Meanwhile in Group C, Germany beat Northern Ireland 1-0 and Poland earned a 1-0 victory over Ukraine. The Associated Press

Leave fumbles at the beep NFL

New audio indicators used to improve grip on football Amid the hooting and hollering at Washington Redskins minicamp, there’s a different sound in the air during running back drills. Coaches whack at the football with Matt Jones carrying it, and it beeps. Then it beeps longer. That’s a good sign. The Redskins are one of five NFL teams using so-called beeping or whistling footballs to emphasize ball security. When the ball is being held correctly with the fundamental five points of pressure, it emits an audible beeping sound at about 80 decibels to tell a player he’s doing it right. “If I had that ball in high school, I don’t think I would’ve had a fumble,” Jones said. “It’s teaching me how to squeeze the ball at the point of contact. Everything has changed about me holding the ball.” Cutting down on fumbles is the goal of the ball, developed by Division II Northwood University assistant coach Tom Creguer and used by the Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and several college teams, including Ten-

Creguer said practising with “High and Tight” footballs, which cost about $150 each, reduced Northwood’s fumbles by 63 per cent last season. Many NFL position coaches got the lowdown on them at the scouting combine. “It basically reinforces the proper hold by teaching the athlete to put their forearm to the panel, their panel to

the chest and to compress the ball evenly with equal distribution of pressure, therefore creating basically a vice around the football, creating that muscle memory of what it feels like to have the ball secured to their body at all times,” Creguer said in a phone interview. Coaches have taught ball security for decades, but this technology adds another element. Creguer said Cowboys running backs coach Gary Brown texted him that he’ll use the beeping footballs as

long as he’s working. That doesn’t mean Cowboys players warmed up to them right away. “They didn’t like it at first,” Brown said. “I think it was just the pressure you had to do it. They’re not used to squeezing it that hard.” Players aren’t the only ones adjusting to how to squeeze a football tight enough. During a presentation on ball security, Ravens running backs coach Thomas Hammock demonstrated and then tossed the ball to coach John Harbaugh, who couldn’t get it to beep. “I’ve been working out; I feel like I’m pretty strong right now,” Harbaugh said with a laugh. “Found out later the battery was dead, for the record. I’m sticking to it, that’s right.” On the field, though, it seems to be working. Brown said Cowboys running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris fumbled less during organized team activities and minicamp after working with the beeping balls in drills. Colts running back Robert Turbin has only lost one fumble in 281 career carries but is open to new ideas about how to get better. He had never seen anything like the beeping footballs. “All running backs fumble, but as they say, iron sharpens iron, so just because you’re good at something doesn’t mean you can’t get better at it,” Turbin said.
