The Alberta government is cutting private-industry profits from traffic ticket fees by halving the $6 processing fee and in turn saving government an estimated $2.5 million annually. Service Alberta Minister Stephanie McLean announced Thursday that the government is ending its contract with the Association of Alberta Registry Agents, which saw the industry association collect a $6 fee for online payments. McLean said the province was shouldering the vast majority of the costs for paying tickets online and that the organization was charging a fee that saw it make money. “The government always provided the back-end platform to make this pos-

sible, but the association for registry agents was charging an amount that gave them a profit,” she said. “We have removed the profit portion and just made the expense what it costs to be able to operate.” The contract with the registry agents was signed in 2004 and McLean said she was unable to find a good reason to keep it in place. Cutting the registry agents also reduces some of the technical challenges of sharing information with an outside party. McLean said people, including herself, won’t suddenly be excited about paying a traffic fine, but they will at least not be paying unnecessary fees. “This is a little bit of a silver lining when you encounter the dark cloud of a traffic ticket.” Robyn Young, president of the association, said they are disappointed in the government’s decision. “It wasn’t completely unexpected. We were certainly aware this was the direction they were going in,” she said. She said the contract was structured the way the government wanted.

For Metro | Calgary There are eight candidates eyeing the Alberta PC leadership race and many have familiar faces, much like Jason Kenney. On Thursday, Metro confirmed either through interviews or sources that a handful of Albertans are considering the PC leadership in light of the media circus thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s followed Conservative MP Jason Kenneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s official PC leadership announcement. The list includes former Tory ministers, a familiar city councillor and downtown Edmonton and Calgary lawyers. Interim PC Leader Ric McIver, who isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t on the contenderâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s list, will be replaced after the election occurs sometime before April 30, 2017. The viewpoints of some of the political heavyweights on the list are in stark contrast to Kenney, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s staunch fiscal and social conservatism skews him a bit more right than past PC leaders, like Alison Redford. On Wednesday, Kenney said his mandate is to unite the Wildrose and PC parties under one banner to hopefully defeat the governing Alberta NDP. At its annual general meeting, PC Alberta also sent a clear mandate that it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t unite with another conservative party.

Sandra Jansen Calgary North West PC MLA Sandra Jansen is currently the Education, Human Services and Status of Women opposition critic. Under former Premier Alison Redfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rein, Jansen served as the Associate Minister of Family and Community Safety. She has been vocal about LGBTQ rights and has tackled issues like human trafficking, violence against women and child exploitation.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team seized four kilograms of W-18 powder, 3,200 fentanyl pills and 100 kilograms of N-phenethylpiperidinone (NPP) — a legal substance used in fentanyl production — in addition to numerous other drugs, precursors and weapons. “This was a highly complex and demanding investigation,” said ALERT Staff Sgt. Knibbs said a child was present in the Edmonton home, where investigators also found two kilograms of benzylpiperazine (BZP) and two kilograms of trifluoromethylphenylpiperazinem (TFMPP) — which mimic ecstasy when mixed together — as well as a loaded shotgun and a semiautomatic rifle. “The possession of these chemicals and these controlled substances, in the quantities that they were found, is not something that happens without a sophisticated network that is built over a period of years,” Knibbs said. Dean Clayton Abbott, 41, and Shavon Carlene Wenger, 32, were arrested Wednesday and face a total of 27 charges related to drugs and firearms. Abbott was previously convicted in a 2002 shooting and Wenger was his commonlaw spouse.

Wildfires costliest ever weather event

The wildfire that rendered the heart of oilsands country a charred and ashy mess is estimated to be the costliest disaster in Canada, with worrying evidence that extreme weather events have increased in frequency and severity, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said Thursday. About $3.58 billion in damage is expected due to the fire in May that swept through Fort McMurray, Alta., nearly twice as much as the January 1998 ice storms that paralyzed eastern Ontario and southern Quebec. That disaster resulted in just over $2 billion in damages when converted into 2015 dollars, the bureau said. “Ultimately what we are seeing is that our climate is changing, and the long-term trends are directly a result of some of those dynamics,”Bill

Steve Sir was playing in Romania this year, his ninth season of pro basketball, when the Bucks reached out to him a couple of months ago about the possibility of playing on

Metro | Edmonton Alberta Health Services is close but currently missing its response-time targets in cities after the agency was initially hitting the standards it set for itself last year. After operating for more than a year without an official target for response times, AHS released new benchmarks in December. Those targets were for ambulances to arrive within 12 minutes, 90 per cent of the time in urban areas, 15 minutes in communities of less than 3,000 people, 40 minutes in rural areas and 75 minutes in remote areas. But based on data released this week, response times are increasing — slightly — in urban areas to just more than 12-minutes, after initially beating them last fall. The organization exceeded the target for both rural and remote areas, too, but has recently hit the target for smaller communities, after hitting a peak of 16 minutes early this year. On Thursday, Kenney told reporters contributions to his campaign will be limited to $30,000 per individual, which he said was the limit set by the PC party in past years. He said a not-for profit political organization, Unite Alberta, will “govern its fundraising as though it were during the post-October formal leadership election period.” That means the Kenney -camp will only receive con-

Metro | Edmonton Coun. Scott McKeen wants to know the true costs of homelessness in the river valley and is hoping to use it to argue for more social housing. McKeen formally inquired city administration about the costs of cleaning up homeless encampments after people leave them and sending police into the area. He said it’s beyond time that higher levels of government got serious about housing for people on the fringes. “I want somebody to add up the dollars, but I am sure it is well over $100 million dollars in Edmonton alone,” he said. McKeen said the city is picking up the pieces for issues the federal and provincial government aren’t dealing with. “They are constitutionally responsible for housing and health care and mental health,” he said. “What Canadians do for people that are ill is look after them.”

Kirsta Franke is heading up a pilot project with The City of Edmonton and the McCauley Revitalization Committee to bring Meet Me in the McCauley Market to life on Saturday. “They are working really hard to revitalize it for the city, and I think market initiatives — especially when you’re talking about community animation or place-making — are really important for that,” Franke said. “Access to fresh and local healthy foods is a big one (and) a place where neighbours can come together and enjoy each other’s company is very important.” The pilot began with a market on the same spot in June, in collaboration with the Heart of the City Festival, which drew about 700 customers. Trolley car game is a real historical hit Peter Fiala has designed a smartphone app that can virtually transport you through Edmonton’s history. Fiala’s Edmonton Trolley Car game launched in May and is an app that takes gamers on a historical ride through 1915 Whyte Avenue. Players gain points based on conversations with characters and the historical landmarks viewed. Fiala spent hours in the city and provincial archives researching Whyte Avenue landmarks to ensure historical accuracy. “You find black-and-white photos to use as reference and then go out on foot to realize the building’s gone or it’s blue now when it used to be wood,” he said. He commended the archivists who helped him find information. A trip out to the Edmonton Radial Railway Society helped

him to understand how a steam-powered engine would work. The game is meant to recreate the feel of a trip in a steam-powered trolley. Fiala said that reception of the game has been great, considering it’s a historically based game that rewards based on historical sites discovered. “You’re not exactly shooting zombies,” he said. Children praised after finding gun RCMP in northwestern Alberta are praising two young kids for doing the right thing when they found a loaded handgun ditched by a shooting suspect. “The children were astute enough to not touch the weapon and immediately notified a parent,” Grande Prairie RCMP said in a release. Sophia’s tearful demand to meet Harjit Sajjan is granted A two-year-old girl’s tearful plea on Canada Day has turned into a dream come true. Sophia Popalyar got her wish Thursday, touring Parliament Hill with Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and even sitting in the Speaker’s chair in the House of Commons. The visit was the result of a Twitter courtship over the last week between the toddler, who has a knack for recalling the names of federal Liberal cabinet ministers, and Sajjan, a key minister in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. On July 1, Popalyar’s father, Fawad, filmed his daughter in the family car as she heartbreakingly asked to go to the Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill, regardless of the rainy weather. In the clip, Sophia said she wanted to see the defence minister. The only problem was that Sajjan happened to be celebrating in his home province of B.C. A short while later, Sajjan posted his own video addressed to Sophia, promising that his staff would arrange a meeting upon his return. “I’m looking forward to meeting you because one of my goals is to meet with future leaders of Canada,” he said. Reform won’t be easy: Chief The Liberals’ proposal to overhaul Canada’s electoral system just got more complicated. Outgoing Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand told MPs Thursday a new voting system may require a long and difficult process to redraw Canada’s 338 electoral districts. Mayrand said it’s still possible, if the government moves quickly, to put in place a new system for 2019 — but it’s not so simple as placing a new process over the existing ridings. “Even looking at a streamlined process to simply aggregate the current ridings, you will have

pockets where aggregation will not necessarily be the best way to go. You may find, among other things, a community of interest could be linguistic. Or you may suddenly, through aggregation, completely dilute a community of interest.” Part of the problem is that Elections Canada doesn’t know what kind of system will be ultimately proposed. the city’s police chief said in a statement. A statement from Dallas Police Chief David Brown said “it appears that two snipers shot 10 police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally.” The gunfire broke out around 8:45 p.m. Thursday while hundreds of people were gathered to protest fatal police shootings this week in Louisi-

ana and Minnesota. The statement said three officers are dead, two were in surgery and were are in critical condition. “An intensive search” for suspects was underway, it said and no one was in custody. Live TV video showed protesters marching along a street in downtown, about half a mile from City Hall, when the shots erupted and the crowd scat-

tered, seeking cover. TV cameras showed the search for the gunman stretched throughout downtown, an area of hotels, restaurants, businesses and some residential apartments. The scene was chaotic, with helicopters hovering overhead and officers with automatic rifles on the street corners. Carlos Harris said the shooters “were strategic. It was tap tap pause.

But now they are worried Canada Post’s threat it will lock out 50,000 workers Monday — pushed back from an original deadline of Friday — could trap all those invitations and accompanying tiny RSVP envelopes in the post office. SLIPPERY SWIMMERS Researchers writing in the Journal of Experimental Biology have discovered that swordfish have an oil gland that lubricates their heads to reduce drag and allow them to shoot through the water, sword-first, at up to 100 km/h.

NASA’s Juno spacecraft is the fastest human-made object ever, with a peak speed of about 209,000 km/h. It’s about 9 m across at its widest point, including the solar panels that power its flight, and weighs 3,625 kg.

THE (GAS) GIANT MYSTERY

Even if you could bear the cold (around -145 C at the surface), you couldn’t walk on Jupiter. It’s made up of 99 per cent helium and hydrogen gas. What’s the other one per cent? Nobody knows exactly, but Jupiter’s insides are made of something very, very heavy. The outer core is thought to be metallic hydrogen: hydrogen gas under such tremendous pressure it starts to behave like a metal. The planet might also have an inner core: Maybe made of rock, maybe heavy metal, maybe something else. That’s what Juno is trying to learn.

For Metro Canada I have a brother but he’s not my bro, at least not by the contemporary definition. My sibling and I are biologically brothers but neither of us fall into what the NPR Codeswitch blog described as the four rudimentary characteristics of “bro-iness”— jockish, dudely, stoner-ish and preppy. There are as many ways to define bros and brahs as there are bros and brahs at your local frat house. Oxford Dictionary writer Katherine Connor Martin sums it up simply as “a conventional guy’s guy who spends a lot of time partying with other young men like himself.” The urban dictionary isn’t quite as elegant, describing bros as “obnoxious partying males who are often seen at college parties… (standing) around holding a red plastic cup waiting for something exciting to happen so they can scream something that demonstrates how much they enjoy partying.” This weekend Zac Efron and Adam DeVine play brothers who are also bros in Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

Lately in movies like Neighbors and Dirty Grandpa, Efron has made a career of playing dim-witted frat boys but to find the proto bros you have to go back to 1940.

Starting with Road to Singapore, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby cocktailed and ad-libbed their way through seven Road movies playing two slightly skeezy men with boatloads of bravado and an unbreakable bond — at least until love interest Dorothy Lamour showed up. National Lampoon’s Animal House was the next landmark of bro-cinema. From toga parties to food fights and doing The Worm on the dance floor, it’s a politically incorrect classic that celebrates the best and worst of bro culture. A 1996 movie gave us the bro with a million catchphrases like “Vegas, baby,” “wingman,” “beautiful babies” and “you’re so money.” As Trent in Swingers, Vince Vaughn gave a voice and brocabulary to a generation of bros. Jon Favreau wrote the script but many of the sayings came directly from the lips of his best friends and co-stars Vaughn and Ron Livingston. No look at bro-cinema would be complete without a nod toward Will Ferrell. The comedian has broed out on screen many times but Old School’s Frank the Tank, a character who unravels after his wife leaves him, is King Bro. When he’s not doing beer bong hits (“Once it hits your lips, it’s so good!”) or streaking, he lets his freak flag fly as one of the most over-the-top bros ever seen on screen. Dean Wormer’s classic scolding from Animal House, “Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son,” doesn’t seem to apply, at least to the genre of bro movies.

For Metro Canada The odds of making it as an actor in Hollywood are staggering. And with a dearth of roles for women, it’s even harder for actresses. But Sugar Lyn Beard beat the odds. In 2008, the one-time television host abandoned a cozy gig at YTV to take on Tinseltown. Now with a critically-praised part in the new comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, she’s not only landed a starring role (opposite Zac Efron), she’s stealing scenes. “Until I actually became really close to booking the part, I didn’t even read the whole movie,” laughed the squeaky-voiced Scarborough-native about Jeanie, the put-upon bride/sister of two brothers who place an online ad to attract companions for the ceremony. “I’ve been out here a long time and you learn to cope with auditioning; I got to the point where I was realistic about what was a possibility for me (but) with Jeanie, I understood who she was immediately.” Beard may have identified with the high-strung bride but what she didn’t initially realize was that her funniest sequence involved a raunchy erotic bumon-bum massage — a cinematic spectacle that even lead veteran critic Pete Hammond to offer a special “shout-out to Beard, who is really game for anything.” “I can’t tell you how comfortable and fun it was,” insisted Beard, who admits nudity and comedy naturally intertwine. “Although by the end of the day, the studio felt so bad for me, they paid for an actual massage with a real professional to make up for the ass-job that I got.” After several years coveting minor roles in movies like Aloha and TV series like Weeds, Beard

As a young transgender woman in Uganda, Cleopatra Kambugu found herself at risk simply for seeking to live life as her authentic self. The East African country is notorious for anti-LGBTQ laws which criminalize same-sex relations. After Kambugu was outed by a tabloid, she went into hiding, relying on her family to bring food and supplies. After leaving Uganda for Kenya with her partner, Nelson, the LGBTQ activist found new freedom through film. “I felt this was my last hope to be able to give back to the community by being able to (use) my voice,” Kambugu said in an interview for The Pearl of Africa which screened during the HotDocs Festival in Toronto. “It was also safer because I wasn’t in Uganda anymore. I was staying in Nairobi. So it was safer for me to proceed with the movie.” Kambugu said she had long discussions with filmmaker Jonny von Wallstrom about ensuring there were “different layers and nuances” of how the story was told. “I guess one thing that’s never talked about is the apathy and the violence that men or women who date transgender people face. They’re also part of the transition.” In addition to reflecting the difficulties faced by the queer community, von Wallstrom said he also wanted to reflect the universality of Kambugu’s experience. “I think it’s strange

that this is only looked upon as a trans story. This is so much more than that. It is also about being black and it’s also about being human,” he added, noting that the “universal love story” at the centre of the film also resonates. The Pearl of Africa arrives on screens at a time where trans rights remain a prominent point of discussion and contention. The Pentagon has announced transgender people will be allowed to serve openly in the U.S. military. Meanwhile, in North Carolina, battle lines continue to be drawn over bathrooms with protests over state law widely seen as discriminatory to LGBTQ people. The law states that transgender people must use bathrooms corresponding with the gender on their birth certificate in government buildings as well as in public schools and universities. In May, the Obama administration told public schools across the U.S. that transgender students should be allowed to use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity. “We didn’t know four years ago when we started that it would become such an important national topic. I ended a day filled with firsts teary eyed at the moment during the race that fades from the track back to Alec riding the Black on the beach

I attended my first horse race on Sunday; the 157th Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack, to be precise. And “attend” is a bit of a stretch: I was there, working actually, so I only saw the races on screens stationed throughout the grounds. But I did manage to sneak away to the track, standing just north of the grandstand, trying to visualize the scenes that were shot here nearly 41 years ago to the day from The Black Stallion. The Francis Ford Coppolaproduced film was helmed by first-time director, and Coppola’s former UCLA classmate, Carroll Ballard, working from a script co-written by first-

time screenwriter Melissa Mathison, who’d go on to pen E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. It was only the second feature film for Caleb Deschanel, who’d go on to win five Academy Awards for his cinematography — although scandalously he did not so much as score a nomination for his exceptional work on The Black Stallion. And it was the first acting role for Kelly Reno, who plays the freckle-faced boy Alec. Reno, bright, quiet, and unaffected — reminding me of my older brother at that age — didn’t so much act. He just was. Ballard said that because the “big suits” didn’t know what to do with this “art film for kids,” The Black Stallion was shelved for two years — until Coppola used his Godfather clout to make sure it saw the light of day in 1979. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, and earned a special Oscar for sound editing

THE MOVIE:

During the second half of the film, we tried to guess the Queen Street East Toronto locations doubling as Queens, New York locales from the 1950s. We also spied a porch that we suspect belongs to a grand old home on High Park Blvd, just around the corner from us. Simon fell asleep for the finale. I was bright-eyed — anticipating the moment during the race that fades from the track back to Alec riding the Black on the beach — and then, quite unexpectedly, teary-eyed. I sat back while the credits rolls, in wonderment that a film I’ve watched countless times throughout both my childhood and adulthood, could still so deeply affect me. What an extraordinary thing. Rose McGowan defends Zellweger, slams film critic Actress Rose McGowan is calling out a film critic for writing that Renee Zellweger no longer looks like herself and insinuating that Zellweger underwent plastic surgery. In an op-ed piece for The Hollywood Reporter, McGowan calls Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman a bully and “an active endorser of what is tantamount to harassment and abuse of actresses and women.” McGowan is responding to a column Gleiberman wrote last week on the trailer for the Bridget Jones’s Baby, the third film in the franchise starring Zellweger as the title character. Featuring instruments from the Silk Road region, Ma mixes and matches his cello with the exotic sounds of the pipa, a Chinese shortnecked plucked lute, a Mongolian horse head fiddle called a

morin khuur and a Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute among others to produce an otherworldly sound that blends different cultures and styles. “It’s not so much what makes stuff different but more the fact that we work in such a connected world,” says Ma. “Part of it is that, and part of it is to recognize the strength of individuality but also inherent in that strength is flexibility. Mortensen steps into dad shoes in new role In Captain Fantastic, Viggo Mortensen plays one of the alltime great movie dads. Holed away in a remote Pacific Northwest teepee, he’s raising six children like a bookish, yogapracticing Swiss Family Robinson. The children, well-behaved and smart, are equally adept at skinning a deer and reading The Brothers Karamazov by the campfire. They pine after boning knives like most kids do iPhones. Captain Fantastic, a hit on the festival circuit, has resonated for audiences as a movie for its time: a heartfelt and comic exploration about whether our hyper-digital, cacophonous lives have strayed from more elemental things. “It feels like one of those movies that has connected with

something related to U.S. society right now,” Mortensen said while smoking a cigarette on a rooftop patio after the film played at the Cannes Film Festival in May. “People get bewildered and think: ‘I can’t do that. I’m not going to skin a f---ing deer.’ But there are other things you can do.” The film is the second directing feature for Matt Ross, a veteran actor known to many as Gavin Belson on HBO’s Silicon Valley. In Captain Fantastic, the

For Metro Canada Swiss Army Man, the story of a marooned man and his dead buddy’s journey back to civilization is a tale of friendship and what it means to be alive, — really and truly alive. The easy thing would be to describe the new Daniel Radcliffe, Paul Dano two-hander as Cast Away meets Weekend at Bernie’s, but that doesn’t grab the poetic essence of what the film is trying to achieve. “We make our movies for ourselves and we wanted to surprise ourselves into learning something and feeling something,” says Dan Kwan, the film’s co-director and co-writer. Kwan is half of Daniels, his directing collective with partner Daniel Scheinert. The duo came up with the idea for Swiss Army Man after directing a series of innovative, internetbreaking music videos like DJ Snake and Lil’ Jon’s Turn Down for What (35 million views and counting). “We’ve been working together since 2009 and kind of discovered this movie as much as we wrote it,” says Scheinert. “We have very different film-

making processes but very similar tastes. As we work together certain stories started to reveal themselves. “It’s kind of autobiographical about the two of us. That’s a joke answer but it is also kind of true. Certain jokes would make us both laugh. Somewhere in that stew of us becoming friends a movie about two guys becoming friends came out. The signature image of a man riding a corpse’s farts across the ocean came out somewhere in there. The relationships with all the crew that made this movie also inspired the movie. We met our DP and our production designer and wrote a movie that played to their strengths.”

But he has his own secret plans, having felt the presence of Luke Skywalker. This book’s pure entertainm e n t , with Boba Fett, Jabba the Hutt and more. The new creations are perhaps the best fun, especially the droids Triple Zero and BeeTee, who may look like protocol and astromech models but are far more murdery.

Daughter brings iconoclastic musician to life

For Metro Canada Moon Zappa, daughter of the late, great musician Frank Zappa, says: “Growing up I hated sharing him with the fans.” Or anybody else it seems. “I once brought him to show-andtell when I was in third grade,” she says. “I was so excited to share my dad with the class. Then he spent the whole time tickling all the other children. I was furious but they loved it.” Maturity has brought a different perspective, and now the 48-year-old is sharing her life and her iconoclastic father with the world as she helps promote a new documentary that covers his creative life and times. Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words uses a collection of archival interviews and television clips to paint a word portrait of Zappa sans any context, voice-over or other documentary tricks. “He did speak to the underdogs and he did illuminate many minds,” says Moon. “You have a little taste of him and you want more. You want to have him all to yourself and I certainly had that feeling. Now I like sharing those stories but at the time I thought I really want him all to myself.” By the end of Eat That Question’s running time, a picture has been painted of a man who self-describes himself as a freak and a conservative, a family man and an out-of-the-box musician who played by his own rules. “He definitely had a regular life,” says Moon, the oldest of four Zappa kids. “He was a quiet, shy man who thought he was ugly, who couldn’t cook, who deflected with humour and who couldn’t really have a confrontational conversation. He always struck me as a Sicilian patriarchal kind of parent. As an adult I went, ‘Of course that is ridiculous. Of course he had this other life.’ “For example, I knew he had cheated a few times, but I didn’t realize the magnitude of the cheating. From one perspective it’s a fantastic rock ’n’ roll perk, but for a daughter it feels

pretty crappy to have a cheater dad. That is something I am reconciling. I also have tremendous respect for him but it’s all so confusing.” Moon, formerly known as Moon Unit, tasted her father’s fame as the “grody to the max” vocalist of Frank’s Top 40 hit Valley Girl, but says she craved a normal life. “I longed for structure,” she says. “When I saw John Hughes films I was, ‘Wait! People sit at a dinner table? Wait! People say sorry?’ Even to this day when I see somebody with a sweater draped over their shoulders, or a loafer or an exposed ankle, I’m like, ‘That is so exotic.’ I think if I had grown up in the repression my father encountered I would also have put two rocket boosters on my back, but growing up like that was too much. It was like fastball pitches every single minute.” The elder Zappa was a complex man, but Moon says Eat That Question “is exactly how I wish the world could perceive him.” “This one for me really tells the story of my father answering his calling and the stamina required to see a dream through. That is a human story. That’s why I think his story connects on a human level. It’s universal.”

Dr. Seuss’ secret artwork goes public the pendulum gallery

Artist’s private works reveal another side Late at night, with the world asleep, Theodor Seuss Geisel to his studio would creep. The author and illustrator stashed his unfinished prose and unrolled artwork that nobody knows. The world came to love him as Dr. Seuss; he famously created characters like the Whos. An expert says that his midnight jam helped him dream up stories like Green Eggs and Ham. “At nighttime, it was just his own unbridled creativity he was able to put out there on canvas, on a piece of paper, on board,” said Jeff Schuffman, spokesman for the Art of Dr. Seuss Collection for more than a decade. More than 40 reproductions spanning 50 years of Geisel’s

unknown artistry will be unveiled to the Canadian public for the first time on Monday at a gallery in Vancouver. The Pendulum Gallery will showcase the limited edition illustrations, paintings and sculptures authorized by the Dr. Seuss Estate in California until July 30. The exhibition will offer a rare look at works that Geisel asked his wife not to release publicly until he was dead, Schuffman said. Seuss squirreled away the art he made for pleasure, to cure writer’s block, and for family and close friends to maintain some privacy, he said. More than 250 million copies of the author’s 44 books had been published by the time he died in 1991. Geisel dubbed his secret collection, containing about 200 works, the “Midnight Paintings.” In a preface to a book about the collection called “The Cat Behind the Hat,” Geisel’s wife Audrey

writes: “I’m gratified to carry out Ted’s wishes and have these works revealed to the world.” Schuffman said there is the public side of Dr. Seuss that many grew up with, but visitors to the exhibit will discover his private mind. Geisel, born in 1904 in Massachusetts, was a self-taught artist whose talents ranged from watercolour to oil to sculpture, Schuffman said. He studied at Oxford University to be an Eng-

lish professor, but quit when he realized he was doodling more than taking notes. He began his career as an editorial cartoonist in the 1920s, served in the army during the Second World War and visited more than 30 countries in Europe and South America before he was 30 years old. “I meet a lot of people at shows and exhibitions who knew that Seuss certainly was an author who revolutionized

children’s literacy in the late 1950s, but never realized that he actually illustrated those books as well,” Schuffman said. Among the gallery highlights will be a portfolio of nine drawings recreated last year to honour the 25th anniversary of Geisel’s final book, Oh the Places You’ll Go! He made the handcoloured drawings before the book went to final ink and paint. A quirkier display will be five surreal animal heads mounted

on wood plaques made in the 1930s, called Unorthodox Taxidermy. Fabricated from paint, papier mache and clay, the sculptures have names like The Carbonic Walrus and the Goo-GooEyed Tasmanian Wolghast. Schuffman described the work being displayed as having a “Seussian slant.” “When you see them in context with his full body of work, it just clicks and makes sense.” The Canadian Press

Ready in Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Ingredients • 1/2 avocado • 5 basil leaves, torn into pieces • 1 teaspoon lemon juice • butter for pan • 2 eggs • salt and pepper • 4 slices bread • 1./4 cup shaved Monterey jack cheese Directions

1. In a small bowl, mix avocado until smooth. Stir in the lemon juice and pieces of basil. Set aside. Toast four slices of bread in a toaster oven or toaster. Remove and let cool. 2. Spread two slices with avocado mixture. Set aside. 3. Warm a skillet over medium heat. Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of butter and melt. Crack the eggs into the pan and season with salt and pepper. Cook until whites are nearly set then gently flip eggs. Allow to cook another minute and then remove from pan, placing one on each slice of bread without avocado spread. 4.
