Ward’s Island resident not afraid of a little water

Downpour not enough to get Jimmy Jones to leave his home David Hains

Metro | Toronto The upcoming downpour that threatens an evacuation of Toronto Island won’t force 87-year-old Jimmy Jones from his home. Despite an expected 40-70 millimetres of rain over the next few days — a deluge that has residents and city workers setting up pumps, dykes and 2,500 sandbags — he is staying put. In fact, he didn’t even consider taking shelter on the mainland. “It never once crossed my mind,” he told Metro in his home on Ward’s Island. Jimmy Jones, after all, is an islander.

Starting as

FRIENDLY RIVALS

He has been an island resident since 1932, when he moved with his family from Parkdale. His father, a professional clown, wanted to be closer to where he would give performances at Hanlan’s Point. Jones’ work also kept him tied to the island. He operated a water taxi service and later worked at the island school. Jones has seen a lot in that time, but he is not the oldest of the approximately 700 islanders. That distinction belongs to 100-year-old Rose Wilson, his mother-in-law. She will also tough out the storm, because that is the islander way. Jones recalls previous floods brought on by downpour, like one in the early ’90s or the one in 1972 that required sand-

bags and ruined some homes. But if the hated former parks commissioner Tommy Thompson couldn’t get him and his neighbours off the island, the weather won’t either. The city’s parks department has a better relationship with islanders than when Jones stood up to potential eviction in the early ’70s, and he trusts they’ll do what’s necessary to protect Ward’s Island homes. City spokesperson Wynna Brown tells Metro that several city divisions are working on the issue and that “we have crews working very closely on mitigation.” The city has a ferry standing by if an evacuation is necessary and will continue to monitor the situation, said Brown. While some islanders made last-minute preparations for the storm — groceries and extra jugs of water were spotted on the ferry — he says he’ll be fine without the extra supplies. “I have an egg in the fridge,” he said. “Hard boiled — like me.” with files from torstar news service

History of a political spat October 2007: As leader of the provincial Conservatives, John Tory runs for Kathleen Wynne’s Don Valley West seat in the 2007 election. He loses by 11 percentage points.

Mayoral campaign 2014: John Tory is endorsed by several provincial Liberals. “My Liberal colleagues at Queen’s Park are almost unanimously enthusiastic about John’s candidacy,” said Toronto MPP Brad Duguid.

Why all the rain?

Toronto is expected to get as much rain over the next few days as it normally gets for all of May, a result of abnormal temperatures over the last two months, Environment Canada says. Up to 70 millimetres of rain are expected from Thursday afternoon to Saturday night. Toronto usually receives about 74 mm of rain in May. About 20 mm has already fallen this month prior to this weekend’s storm, said Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips. “May showers are just bringing more showers,” Phillips said. In March, moisture in the ground that would normally have evaporated froze instead, a result of colder than normal temperatures. A warmer April caused the frozen ground to melt, which meant extra moisture in the air leading to a wet spring. Temperatures will reach 10 C on Friday and dip to 5 C on Saturday. There’s a 70 per cent chance of snow or flurries Sunday when temperatures are expected to reach 4 C during the day and a low of 0 C overnight. This weekend’s forecast might not be the end of heavy rainfall in Toronto but it’s hard to tell, Phillips said. “It’s a bit of a crapshoot.” torstar news service

Toronto Digest Canadian being questioned in Belize murder case A Canadian man is being questioned by Belizean police in connection with the deaths of 52-yearold Canadian Francesca Matus and her American boyfriend. Raphael Martinez, a spokesperson for police in Corozal, said the Canadian is one of “several people” in custody who are being questioned but not officially considered suspects.

Zoo strike looms About 500 unionized staff at Toronto Zoo could soon be off the job, raising questions about whether the animalfilled attraction would remain open to the public. Contract talks continue between CUPE Local 1600 and zoo management, but there is a possibility of a lockout or strike as early as May 11, local president Christine McKenzie told reporters Thursday at city hall.

Study says 121 schools could close in 3 years Ontario school boards have recommended closing 121 schools in Ontario over the next three years, hitting rural communities the hardest, according to a new report by People for Education. School closures have generated protests this school year, but how many of the province’s 4,900 schools are vulnerable has been subject to dispute.

Activist who gave pigs water cleared A Toronto woman who gave water to pigs on a truck headed to an abattoir didn’t break the law since she didn’t harm the animals or prevent them from being slaughtered, a judge ruled Thursday as he found the activist not guilty of a mischief charge. Anita Krajnc also did not intend to cause the slaughterhouse to reject them, Justice David Harris said.

Program’s cultural competence a big factor When Zachary Khan moved to Toronto in Grade 9, he noticed that people started to see him differently. Back home in Guyana, Khan looked like every other kid; in Toronto, he was one of two black students in his grade. He could never shake the feeling that his teachers liked him less — Khan was suspended eight times for “tiny things” he says other kids got away with. By the end of high school, Khan was struggling with anger issues, depression, marijuana addiction and a brush with the law. But today, the 26-year-old is studying tourism and hospitality at George Brown College and he feels healthier and more productive than ever before. He knows exactly who to thank. One is his family; the other is SAPACCY, where staff not only worked with him to overcome his addiction and anger issues, they supported him in court, helped his family members with their own struggles, and provided a space where Khan felt seen and heard. “I’m going to be more comfortCommunication

able with someone I can relate to,” he said. “Just the atmosphere, you feel much more comfortable and (with other programs) certain things are just lost in translation.” Tiffany Burton first realized something was deeply wrong when she noticed that she was always crying. When she started self-harming and attempting suicide, her mother sent her to counselling but it wasn’t always helpful; one of her counsellors was a white man, who she felt uncomfortable speaking with candidly, especially about her sexual orientation. But at SAPACCY, she found help. Burton, now 20, says her social worker, a black woman, helped her dismantle her own stigmatizing of mental health. torstar news service

Better access to tap water could curb use of plastic bottles. ISTOCK

to get rid of disposable plastic materials, the goal was to gradually phase out the sale and distribution of bottled water on city property. The strategy sought to improve access to tap water by installing water fountains and refilling stations in public places. But by 2012 nearly 140 parks and

city facilities had been exempted from the policy due to the lack of drinking water. A recommendation was made then to install 10 new water filling stations per year, but nobody followed up to check the status until now. “It has sort of fallen out of many people’s memory but the policy is still in place,” said Davis, noting she was prompted to revive the issue last month when council approved an exemption to sell water bottles at Nathan Phillips Square during Canada 150 celebrations. She wants an update on where the city stands on the ban, the state of existing water fountains and how many more are needed in every public park and facility. A report is expected by September.

History of a political spat April 2017: The provincial budget doesn’t feature the cash for social housing and transit the mayor hoped for. He says the Liberals have “turned their backs on Toronto.

Sarah-Joyce Battersby Metro | Toronto

It’s plain to see, the mayor and the premier can’t seem to agree on much these days — this story included. But many Torontonians do agree: it’s time for this to stop. A look to the U.S. may suggest that extreme discord is the norm in politics, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Metro reached out to family counsellors and workplace therapists to solicit relationship advice on behalf of John Tory and Kathleen Wynne. The first step: recognize the problem and stop demonizing one other, advised Paul Clark, a Mississauga-based family therapist. Next, they need to “give up being right, though he

and now

THE FIX acknowledged that because they have different mandates, sometimes they are both right. “Both of them are trying to do a lot of things with not enough money, Clark said. Brandon Smith, a workplace therapist in Atlanta, Ga., said public displays of animosity are a sign it might be too late. “One of them has to fall on their sword, Smith said, in order for the healing to begin. He recommends one-on-one talks to foster understanding. Then repair the public-facing relationship with a joint press conference apologizing, acknowledging one another’s positions and introducing a plan to move forward. The standoff seems to be part of a trend in politics, Smith added. “There’s less interest in really hearing the other person, more interest in overtaking the other person’s

position by being louder. If Clark could assign homework, he would advise Tory refrain from any public sniping for the next two weeks. “When you do that, Premier Wynne doesn’t see that you’re upset; she sees just that you’re attacking her, he said. For Wynne, he advised the same: offer direct lines of communication before making public announcements, like the spiking of road tolls. “I always tell couples, just check in, Clark said. Clark constantly reminds couples that wars are not fought over right and wrong; they’re fought over right and right. You have to ask yourself, do you want to be right or do you want to be happy? “Help them understand, Clark said. “You’re not fighting the person, you’re fighting the problem.

Riding fiery flashbacks Fort Mac: One Year Later

Escape on horseback made national headlines Darren Krause

Metro | Calgary When Jada Polem swings into the saddle, she has flashbacks of the Fort McMurray wildfire. Polem’s story of a dramatic, 15 km ride to safety aboard her palomino quarter-horse mare, Mya, told first by Metro, made headlines across Canada as tens of thousands fled the northern Alberta disaster. “Every time I’m riding any horse, as soon as I put my leg over, you get that quick flashback of going straight, but as soon as you look behind you everything’s just up in flames,” said Polem. “It’s flashbacks every time you do something that’s involved with the fire, whether it was driving out or riding out.” The day before the fire her

Jada Polem and her horse Mya. contributed

family moved their three horses from the Clearwater Horse Club to a campground on the north side of Fort McMurray. But the winds shifted, and by Tuesday they had to move the horses again. But with the evacuation underway and fire bearing down, no horse trailers could get through to help. They had a trailer only big enough for two horses, and the only way to get Mya out was to ride.

Polem said the horses were anxious and knew tensions were high. When they returned to Fort McMurray after the fire, riding through the fields around home the horses were still unsettled. “The smell of home is here, but they can still sense that something’s happened and things have changed,” Polem said. The 17-year-old soon-to-be high school graduate said having a year to reflect on the fire,

her harrowing escape and what lies ahead for the community has given her a new perspective on things. Prior to the fire starting, Polem said she was making summer plans with family and friends. She recalled the Saturday prior as just another hot, summer day. Within a day, smoke and flames started showing. “That’s when everything changed,” she said. “You literally live day by day. This year you almost expect something to happen because you’re feeling so prone to something happening.” Polem said every day things are inching back to normal. When Metro spoke with Polem, the day of the one-year anniversary of the fire, she said there was a noticeable tension. People still talk quite frequently of the fire — some more than others — but it’s always in the back of people’s minds. For her, riding has provided that daily routine that she can count on as the post-fire days pass by. “Riding horses just makes it more settling. it’s an everyday thing and you know that it feels more normal than not having (the horses) around,” Polem said.

With new tech like gene-editing system CRISPR, some scientists are working to resurrect creatures like the woolly mammoth, extinct about 4,000 years. But should we bring them, or anything, back? Here’s a look at the debate:

Bring me back!

Bring it! Proponents of “de-extinction” include Harvard biologist George Church and Stewart Brand, founder of Revive & Restore, a “genetic rescue” foundation. Scientists at R&R’s Woolly Mammoth Revival project are figuring out how to modify Asian elephants to make them more like mammoths, until, after many generations, they essentially are mammoths. (Mammoth DNA is readily available, preserved in permafrost, for reference).

Believers in de-extinction think it could transform ecosystems for the better. Mammoths, the theory goes, could graze in the Arctic. This could help tundra return grasslands and help keep permafrost frozen, absorbing more carbon and mitigating climate change. Finally, de-extinction, like going to Mars, arguably generates wonder and excitement about science’s possibilities.

Sound Smart

Maybe not! Ecologist Douglas McCauley is skeptical. He loves the idea of meeting a mammoth in real life. He’s just afraid de-extinction will turn species into curiousities, seen only in “zoo-like” contexts. McCauley said it’s far more costeffective to invest in protecting living endangered species, though they’re usually nowhere near as charismatic as the mammoth. “I see a lot of value in using the same (deextinction) technologies to helping species that are almost extinct.”

PALEO BITES Until now, it was widely believed that ancient hunter-gatherers bit into their mammoth steaks with ease, never dealing with tooth decay until agriculture brought sugary and starchy foods into their diets. But a new study of modern-day huntergatherers has found many of them do have bad teeth despite their “paleo” diet.

Quick, give Yondu an Oscar in focus

Our Guardians are back, and yes there is an emotional core Richard Crouse

For Metro Canada Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens with a battle scene that would not be out of place in almost any other superhero movie. The set-up has the Guardians — Peter Quill /Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) — working for the Sovereigns, a thin-skinned race of aliens who have hired the heroes to protect valuable batteries from an inter-dimensional monster. The action is as wild and woolly as we’ve come to expect from these big CGI extravaganzas, but the thing that sets the scene apart from all other superhero movies is the sheer, unbridled joy brought to the screen by Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), a tree-like being too small to take part in the fight. Instead he blissfully dances throughout to Mr. Blue Sky, the lush, Beatles-esque ELO song that underscores the sequence. The scene and the movie brim with the missing element of so many other big superhero movies — fun. “That’s what we hoped to

do,” says star Michael Rooker, “bring back the fun. It was fun as hell doing it.” Rooker reprises his role as blue-skinned, red-finned mercenary Yondu. The former Walking Dead actor — he played Daryl’s older brother Merle Dixon — jokes that his normal look, his handsomely craggy face, is actually makeup, and the Blue Man Group style we see in the movie is

the face he was born with. “It takes four or five hours to get this on,” he says, pulling at

his cheek. “The real problem is getting the fin off.” Yondu’s weapon of choice

is a flying arrow made of special sound-sensitive metal he controls through whistling. “Dude,” he says, “everyone is digging that weapon.” It’s the character’s trademark and Rooker laughs when remembering talking to director James Gunn about the role. “Man, I was glad I was able to whistle.” “The first time I got to whistle I did the melodic whistle...

I hypnotized one of the aliens and then I shot out a piercing whistle. Yondu has different whistles.” One wild action sequence with Yondu’s deadly arrow and set to ’70s pop ditty Come a Little Bit Closer is a showstopper, an imaginatively staged set piece with a huge body count and just as many laughs. “That whole sequence is very much like a western gun fight if you think about it,” Rooker says. “You go out, and jacket pulled back, methodical, not fast. It is a total tribute.” In the scene he is accompanied by two computer-generated characters, Baby Groot and Rocket, a genetically engineered raccoon-based bounty hunter. Neither actually appeared on set while shooting, but Rooker says they were there in spirit. “Because these movies use a lot of CGI they require your imagination to be fertile and open and ripe for seeding,” he says. “I’m like, ‘There is Baby Groot. He’s over there and he’s sopping wet...What have they done to him?’ I talk to them like they were any other two characters.” Yondu may be a vicious, arrow-wielding mercenary but he’s also the film’s emotional core and James Gunn says people will be “surprised by Michael Rooker’s performance. He deserves an Academy Award nomination. No joke.” What does Rooker think? “We’ll see about that bro. I’m up for anything.”

A look at new movies this weekend

The Dinner

(Starring Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall; written and directed by Oren Moverman; 120 minutes) — Like a Xavier Dolan movie written with acid ink, The Dinner serves up emotion and bile through a lavish family meal. Richard Gere stars as Stan, a slick U.S. congressman with gubernatorial ambitions; Steve Coogan is his estranged younger brother Paul, a history teacher with issues. Stan’s

wife is Katelyn (Rebecca Hall), evidently unhappy; Paul’s wife is Claire (Laura Linney), unfathomably optimistic. It’s a recipe for indigestion as they convene at an upscale eatery to talk about their teenage sons, who committed a crime, revealed via flashbacks, that is serious enough to ruin lives and scuttle Stan’s career. Staying put, allowing Bobby Bukowski’s coloursaturated and close-up lens to catch every morsel of swallowed rage, would have made a stronger film.

I, Daniel Blake

(Starring Dave Johns and Hayley Squires; directed by Ken Loach; 100 minutes; 14A) — “Say what things are like, because it not only breaks your heart, but it should make you angry,” British filmmaker Ken Loach declared at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, quoting the playwright Bertolt Brecht. Loach, the 80-year-old lion of social realist cinema, does just that with I, Daniel Blake, the movie that earned him the Palme d’Or, his second. A

surprise win of the top prize at Cannes 2016 — other films had been tipped to triumph — it now seems part and parcel of a worldwide populist uprising that includes the Brexit and Trump vote shocks. I, Daniel Blake stars wellliked standup comedian Dave Johns and rising talent Hayley Squires. They play struggling citizens who become friends by chance and allies by conviction when an Orwellian welfare system forces them to take drastic survival measures.

Jackie Boy

(Starring Alino Giraldi, Shannon Coulter; written and directed by Cody Campanale; 87 minutes) — Writer/director Cody Campanale’s first feature is a very dark film and he demands a lot from his actors, particularly Alino Giraldi in the title role, who has to bare it all in more ways than one. Giraldi is Jackie, a 20-something guy with too much money who overindulges in booze, drugs and sex. Especially sex.

Campanale demonstrates a talent for interesting plotting and raw dialogue. The supporting cast is quite good, especially Edward Charette as bosom friend Kal. But the film’s darkness is almost too much to bear and it’s hard to see anything redeeming in Jackie beyond a glimmer. That said, there’s enough promise here to anticipate Campanale’s future endeavours with apprehension and pleasure. torstar news service

A trendsetting Tower, the first celebrity chef documentary

dine” today. The septuagenarian star of the new documentary Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent may be the so-called “first celebrity chef,” but his story is one of humble beginnings. After all, Tower’s intent was hardly that of obtaining fame. “It filled the restaurant and

that was the point of it,” admitted the one-time aspiring architect who drew celebrity status through his charisma as well as his cuisine. “The best thing was finally a mother could tell her friends that her son is a cook and feel proud instead of saying he’s an accountant.” Tower’s career began in the

early ’70s when he was casually hired at popular California bistro Chez Panisse, a successful stint that led to Stars, his own esteemed eatery that attracted celebrities, promoted dining as a form of entertainment and launched the concept of the open-kitchen. “I just wanted to see every-

the new celebrity chefs If Jeremiah Tower insists celebrity chefs “have the courage to be your own person,” then there’s a bright future for at least three food stars from the digital world:

gastronomy includes the Montreal-based creator behind Epic Meal Time — a popular series that creates high-caloric confections like Cheeseburger Baklava.

Hannah Hart: With her popular My Drunk Kitchen series on YouTube, the California-based comedian/ chef has become a sensation by blending laughs and liquor and getting crocked when she’s cooking.

Vani Hari: She’s not a chef per se, but the “food babe” has become equally as famous by using her online status to promote healthy eating. And it’s working — Time magazine named her one of the most influential people on the web today.

Harley Morenstein: Canada’s contribution to online

For Metro Canada It may not occupy most people’s daily thoughts but without one specific person, there’d be no Rachael Ray, Anthony Bourdain or Gordon Ramsay. In fact, it may be difficult to believe but there was a time before the requisite restaurant role was even given much respect. That is, until the “first celebrity chef” Jeremiah Tower came along. “In 1972, I couldn’t tell my grandmother I was working in a kitchen. She would’ve disowned me,” recently laughed the legendary chef largely responsible for “revolutionizing the way Americans eat and

thing and control everything,” explained Tower of the now commonplace design. “It turned out to be this great idea but of course I had no idea at the time.” Tower’s modesty may seem self-effacing but it’s because cooking, not business, is his primary passion and art. Perhaps that’s why the “father of American cuisine” (as Martha Stewart calls him) grew disillusioned and disappeared for 15 years before making a bittersweet rebound at Manhattan’s notorious Tavern on the Green. It’s also why Tower gracefully grimaces when credited

with creating the concept of “celebrity chefs.” After all, with the food industry now saturated with misguided cuisiniers on television and the Internet, America’s preeminent epicurean finds the whole moniker slightly overcooked. “People showing off (bothers me),” said Tower, who doesn’t observe much originality among today’s celebrities. “It’s about being a good cook — knowing what makes great ingredients, what to do with them, and how to present them (and) to have the courage to be your own person.”

MALES & FEMALES WE NEED

BOOST FAT BURNING

THE POWERFUL SLIMMING EFFECT OF HEAT Are you looking for a smart way to burn body fat on a daily basis? Scientists have found that a natural food substance in chili has powerful effects on body fat levels. The key is in heat production.

O

ur body has two types of fat tissue; White and Brown. White fat is passive and just stores fat on your body. But brown adipose fat tissue (BAT) regulates the burning of calories for heat. Brown fat was thought to only be active in infants, to stay warm, but studies are showing that BAT can still be active in adults and the more active it is, the thinner they are!* HOW DO WE ACTIVATE BROWN FAT?

Are you a healthy, non-smoking,

MALE OR FEMALE 18 AND OVER? • Free of daily medications?

If so, you may be eligible for our upcoming clinical research studies: • We conduct weekdays as well as weekend studies. • Compensation may range from $1,000 to $4,000 depending on the length of the study.

Freezing your body is one way (cold showers,

exposure to ice etc.), but luckily, this is not the only way. BAT is also activated by a natural ingredient called capsaicin – the chili compound that makes hot peppers hot. Add chili to a meal and you increase fat burning up to 150%.* ADDING EGCG FROM GREEN TEA TO MAKE A ‘‘SUPER FAT BURNER’’ The problem though, is that for best results, you need to add chili to most meals.* Since this is not practical, New Nordic has designed a tablet called Chili BurnTM, containing

DID YOU KNOW? Chili has been blamed for hurting the stomach lining and creating a burning sensation, but research shows the opposite. Hot chili peppers actually protect the stomach lining and may prevent gastric upsets.*

TEST YOURSELF I want to lose at least 5 kilos I store fat on my belly I don’t eat many spices I don’t drink a lot of green tea I don’t exercise twice a week If you answered “yes” to most of these questions, then Chili Burn is a great tool for you to lose weight safely and surely.

the ideal amounts of chili pepper for fat burning. But to increase the power of the tablet, we added green tea and chromium, which have long been used and proven to promote slimming, especially around the belly.* Take one tablet with your morning and mid day meal, and you are on your way to a leaner you.

Chili Burn is available in Canada at major pharmacies and health food stores. For more information or to buy directly from the manufacturer, call 1-877-696-6734 or visit our website. * For all references, please visit our website TM

Chili BurnTM is made in Sweden and has been a bestselling natural supplement in Europe for over a decade. While Chili BurnTM won’t work overnight, it will surely, safely and gradually help you burn more body fat and in time help you reach your slimming goals.

72 hours in El Salvador

El Salvador has always been a traditional stopover en route to Costa Rica, Honduras or Belize. But there’s so much more to see outside the capital city of San Salvador. Here’s a guide to navigating the country in one, two or three days. JENNIFER WEATHERHEAD HARRINGTON FOR METRO

DAY 2

Visit historic sites

With your next 24 hours, head to Suchitoto (stay at boutique hotel Los Almendros de San Lorenzo), a picturesque town surrounded by volcanoes, lakes and ancient sites like the indigenous city of Chalchuapa (home to the highest pyramids in the country). Continue your tour through Joya de Ceren, a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserved after being buried under volcanic ash from Loma Caldera in 660 BC (also known as the “Pompei of America”). DAY 3

Chase some waves

A third day will allow you to take in the coast. After a stroll along the cobblestone streets of Suchitoto, grab a pupusa (a Salvadorian dish of meat, cheese and beans in a flat pastry) and get a glimpse of the impressive man-made Lago Suchitlan. Then get your surf gear on. El Salvador is known for its surfing, and the swells at the famed volcanic Playa El Tunco are legendary. Bring your beach shoes, because much of the beach is rocky mixed with black sand, and get set to tackle the waves with El Salvador Surf Camps (elsalvadorsurfcamps.com). Not into big waves? Park yourself on the beach or book a massage at the B Boutique Hotel.

DAY 1

Climb a volcano and tour a coffee plantation

You can squeeze a lot into 24 hours in El Salvador and get a great grasp of the country’s best offerings. Drop your bags off at a hotel and head to El Boquerón, the imposing volcano on the city’s limits. You can hike around the edge of the crater (if you want to stretch those plane legs) or opt for the shorter route and drive to the top to get the panoramic views of San Salvador. In the afternoon, take a short trip outside San Salvador to Ataco. Colourful murals on nearly every wall make the town an Instagrammer’s dream and it’s also home to another one of El Salvador’s famed exports — coffee. Tour the El Carmen State plantation and see the bean go from plant to cup, sip on some local brew, then hit up Ataco’s tiny cafés to take in the country’s best flavours.

Who will stop the rain? Rapt rs Toronto trails 2-0

Lowry ailing, Dinos on ropes as series arrives in soggy city He saw one of his best friends and his most vital teammate writhing in pain on the Quicken Loans Arena floor, clutching his ankle with the Toronto Raptors’ playoff aspirations arguably on the line, and DeMar DeRozan had one immediate thought. “Couldn’t get no worse.” Well, maybe it could. Kyle Lowry, who sprained an ankle seconds into the third quarter of Toronto’s eventual 125-103 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of their NBA playoff

series on Wednesday night, spent Thursday afternoon having a deeper examination of the injury and coach Kyle Lowry Dwane Casey Getty Images said Lowry is “questionable” for Friday’s Game 3 at the Air Canada Centre. “Kyle is our driving force, our point guard, our leader,” DeRozan said. “So for us not to have him anything close to 100 per cent, it would be difficult on us. But the next guy, everybody else, has gotta do something a little bit more.” Lowry may make some miracle recovery and play in Game 3, or Game 4 on Sunday afternoon, but he was certainly struggling in the immediate aftermath of the

injury. He limped gingerly to the interview room podium immediately after the game and said the offending joint was “pretty sore right now,” then muttered an expletive when he was walking away. “Just sucks to see anybody go down, no matter who it was,” DeRozan said of the incident 30 seconds into the second half of Game 2 when Tristan Thompson of the Cavaliers knocked down Toronto’s Norm Powell, who went crashing into Lowry. “Just one of them things, when it rains it pours at this point.” Losing half of their all-star backcourt might be a crippling blow to the Raptors, who would presumably turn to Cory Joseph and Delon Wright to handle Lowry’s duties. “It’s unfortunate, obviously, when anyone goes out, especially

If you can find somebody to stop LeBron in these moments, I’ll give you $100. DeMar DeRozan is willing to pay — a bit — for help in stopping LeBron James who is averaging 34.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.8 blocks in these playoffs.

one of our stars. I just think we have that mentality of next man up, just playing hard, as we do when he’s there and we were able to win games,” Joseph said of the 21 regular-season games Lowry missed in 2016-17. Torstar News Service
