Metro | Toronto Scarborough is on the move, and doing it on two wheels. The first-ever Tour de Scarborough takes place this Saturday, a 35-kilometre ride that will take nearly 100 cyclists on a historical tour of the east-end suburb. It’s part of an ongoing strategy to spread cycling culture outside the downtown core. “This is our own way of celebrating Canada 150,” said Scarborough Cycles project co-ordinator Marvin Macaraig, who helped organize the event. “It’s definitely going to be fun. There’s a lot to see in Scarborough, and we want to show people that cycling isn’t just for downtown.” Organized in partnership with U of T Scarborough’s sustainability office and the Scarborough Historical Society, the event also coincides with the suburb’s 221st birthday. Riders will stop at various sites to learn about the neighbourhoods’ history — and catch their breath. A similar but shorter 20-kilometre tour took place back in 2015 as the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation launched its Complete Street

outskirts are not forgotten. “There are some good plans in place, but bike infrastructure in Scarborough is still lacking,” he said. “This is a conversation that we must continue to have with the city and policymakers.”

Time to reap what you sowed. The latest incentive for Toronto cyclists comes in the form of an app that tracks movement and exchanges points for goods and services at participating businesses. Biko first launched in Bogota back in 2015 as part of a one-month campaign to encourage people to choose bikes over cars. But its immediate success has seen the app become popular in cities such as Mexico City, Cartagena, Vancouver and now Toronto. For each kilometre travelled by bicycle, the app user gets one point — a biko. In Toronto, 10 bikos can be exchanged for a free cold brew at Jimmy’s Coffee, and 60 bikos will get the user a free six-pack at Amsterdam Brewing. As many as 19 businesses have signed up for the partnership. “Our goal at Biko is to improve the quality of life in cities by expanding the bicycling revolution, getting people on their bikes to reduce the number of vehicles on the road,” wrote co-founder Emilio Pombo in an email to Metro. Police questioning wrong man: Lawyer BELIZE

Suspect held over Canadian woman’s death a ‘close’ friend The girlfriend and lawyer of a Canadian who has been questioned in connection with the murders of a Canadian-American couple in Belize say that police are focusing on the wrong person. Canadian Francesca Matus, 52, and American Drew DeVoursney, 36, were found strangled in a sugarcane field in Belize’s northern Corozal district May 1. Police have detained and questioned several people in relation to the murders including 54-yearold Canadian John Deshaies, who rented and lived in the basement of Matus’ house in Corozal. Deshaies, who works in construction, is also currently in custody facing charges of theft and possession of stolen property in relation to $50,000 worth of electronics that were taken from a casino in the south Belizean town of Placencia in March. He

has not been charged in relation to the murders. “Our client maintains his innocence with respect to both matters,” Deshaies’ lawyer Estevan Perera told Torstar News Service, adding that Deshaies intends to apply for bail Friday. Speaking from Belize, Jasmine Lizarraga, who says she is Deshaies girlfriend, said he lived

with Matus for about two years and were “very close” friends. “Francesca didn’t have no problems with John, John didn’t have no problems with Francesca,” Lizarraga said. “John, he is innocent. He didn’t do this.” Deshaies was out of town when Matus disappeared, Lizarraga said, but returned to Corozal to help with the search

Francesca Matus was a confident businesswoman and lifelong student, but above all a dedicated mother, according to friends and family who gathered Thursday at a Richmond Hill funeral home. Matus was a 52-year-old mother of twin boys, Alexander and Jason, and shared a close bond with the rest of her family, including her mother, brother and sister-in-law and her nephew, said her close friend Nikki-Mo-

nique Kurnath. “She did anything and everything for her two sons,” Kurnath said. “She took care of them, she would support them. Her goals of being financially secure, to help be able to take care of them, was her priority. “She always put them first.” In eulogies, friends of Matus described her “radiant smile” and “contagious laugh.” They said she “exuded confidence” yet was always eager to learn

something new. “Life was never boring with Francesca. Everything was an adventure. She would make the simplest tasks something more fun to do,” said Kurnath. Kurnath said she looked up to Matus, who like her, was a single mother. “It’s as if we were soul sisters,” she said. “I thought of her as a big sister in a way, but also as a role model.” torstar news service

efforts. She and Deshaies left for San Ignacio, in west Belize, a few days later, but then got a call from a friend saying police had found the bodies and wanted to talk to them. Lizarraga said she and Deshaies went to the police station in Belize’s capital, Belmopan, to give their statements. “He told the cops everything that he knew … the cops didn’t believe him, they detained both of us and since then, the cops think that he had something to do with it and they have him as a suspect,” Lizarraga said. Lizarraga also said the theft charges against Deshaies are unfounded, explaining that he was an employee of the casino and had been told to remove the electronics so they could be used at another location. Deshaies is doing “terrible,” Lizarraga added. “I can’t take clothing for him, he’s still got the same clothing from the day they arrested him,” she said. “I don’t want to go back to (Matus’s) house … I’m afraid to go there right now, I don’t want nothing do to with that, so I can’t go and get clothes for him.”

Budget freeze hits downtown drop-in shelter The city’s budget committee approved a budget freeze for next year. “I think it’s insane,” Patricia O’Connell, the executive director of downtown dropin shelter Sistering told the committee Thursday regarding the direction to hold spending at 2017 levels. Though it receives $1.8 million in city funding annually, those funds have not increased as expenses continue to rise and an affordable housing crisis worsens, O’Connell said. Torstar news service

unit and $75 for a mixed reality unit. The units accommodate up to four people. The walls are lined with art. That includes murals by Payne, but also pieces by artists that will change monthly. Right now, you can see digital works by Jay Tripper on the first floor. The bathrooms are mini art installations themselves. House of VR will close to walk-in guests when the team rents the space out for events. All the units are modular and can be pushed to the walls or out of the space entirely, leaving plenty of space for large groups. From Augmented Reality works on the walls (look through an app on your phone and the piece changes) to a dichroic glass second floor window (it changes colour depending on the time of day and your angle) there’s a lot to see here. Most of it is stuff you can’t see elsewhere. And technology in this field is changing so rapidly, there’s likely going to be something different on hand soon enough. “Virtual reality is such a new technology,” says Brotman. “The future is so exciting.”

Newly opened venue offers virtual reality experience Virtual reality: heard of it, never experienced it. That’s the case for most people. So to fill the gap, there is the newly opened House of VR on Queen St. W., at Bathurst St. A handful of arcades around the city offer VR games, but this new storefront offers a wide range of games and experiences in a large space — and aimed at a slightly different demographic. “We’re trying to be a central hub for art, tech and culture,” says Jonah Brotman, 32, who founded the business with his brother Noah, who also works as an urban planner, and his longtime girlfriend Stephanie Payne, a visual artist. “We’re not just for gamers, we’re for everyone,” adds in Payne. While Brotman has already launched three previous businesses, this is his first retail venture — and the first project

with family. “The reality of life as a serial entrepreneur is you are often working on several projects at the same time.” This is different. Bricks-andmortar ventures take a lot more face time, so the trio are putting in 12-hour days (Noah juggles his day job too) and have been since before the May 6 grand opening (attended by more than 200 people). “We’ve been allin on this,” says Brotman. “It’s been a fun process to put all your energy into one project.”

Groups book into these spaces by the hour, sharing time on the unit itself and watching each other engage with the games and adventures. Cozy pods on both floors — and the super cozy pillow lounge facing the front windows — offer a place for individuals to snap on a Samsung Gear VR headset and view 360-degree films (including one where you’re immersed in a Cirque du Soleil show). The Toronto Comic Arts Festival runs from May 13-14 at the Toronto Reference Library and other venues around the Bloor/Yonge neighbourhood. It’s free to attend.

The lineup at the 2017 Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) does not disappoint. Hundreds of artists from around the world will provide live readings, interviews, panels, workshops, gallery shows and a massive vendor fair. Here are 3 artists to look for this year: Jesse Jacobs – Crawl Space (Koyama Press, 2017) From his home in Hamilton, Jesse Jacobs is making a name for himself in Canadian comics. Crawl Space envisions a brightly saturated world where a group of kids retreat from mundane suburbia with creatures of the surrealist kind. An Nguyen and Jane Mai – So Pretty/Very Rotten (Koyama Press, 2017) Jane Mai (Brooklyn) and An Nguyen (Ottawa) delve into their relationship with the frilly and lacey Lolita subculture and Rococo-inspired fashion with this book of essays and comics that

is both academic and intimate. Patrick Kyle – Wowee Zonk Small Press Showcase Patrick Kyle curates the smallpress showcase Wowee Zonk with Chris Kuzma and Ginette Lapalme at TCAF.

Tunnels get a makeover safety

TTC takes steps to keep cars out of streetcar stations Metro | Toronto The TTC is putting the finishing touches on its master plan to idiot-proof its streetcar tunnels. Construction workers slathered the ground in yellow and black paint on Thursday as yet another way to warn drivers that they should really, really not enter the streetcar tunnel on Queen’s Quay. The gaudy zebra-stripe display is in addition to the many “do not enter” signs and lights that already line the entrance. But these warnings have proved insufficient for at least 22 drivers since 2014, resulting in high-profile transit delays ranging from 15 minutes to five hours. The York and Queen’s Quay streetcar tunnels feature raised

rails and are not meant for cars. Prohibited vehicles usually get stuck, and removing them is an extensive process that can involve a dozen or more people.

Officials had to call in a special crane to remove a trapped car in February. The driver, who was fined $425 after fleeing the scene,

reportedly said he was just “following his GPS.” “Well, we never say never . . . but certainly the steps that we’ve taken are going to make

Metrolinx explores new option Metrolinx has decided to order vehicles from another company in case Bombardier is unable to deliver trains for the Eglinton Crosstown on time. According to sources familiar with the deal, Metrolinx has agreed to purchase cars from French manufacturer Alstom as a backup plan if Bombardier doesn’t come through. Metrolinx, the provincial transit agency for the GTA, signed a deal with Bombardier in 2010 to buy vehicles to run on the Eglinton Crosstown and other Toronto area lines. But the order has been bogged down by delays, and Bombardier has yet to deliver the first two pilot vehicles that were supposed to arrive in spring 2015. Metrolinx has grown increasingly concerned that the Montreal-based company will be able to deliver the cars in time to open the Crosstown by 2021. The agency has said that if the opening is delayed it will be liable to pay the construction company building the line a penalty of up to $500,000 per day.

The steps that we’ve taken are going to make it very difficult to accidentally drive down that tunnel.

it very difficult to accidentally drive down that tunnel,” said TTC spokesperson Stuart Green last month after an initial batch of changes. In addition to the bumblebee pattern on the ground, the TTC’s plan included lowering the pole lights on both side of the entrance, installing a flashing light on a black-andyellow-striped pole, adding even more signs and introducing rumble strips, which are indented grooves in the pavement designed to alert drivers through vibration. The changes — hopefully the last — will be complete in about one week, said Green.

Why it’s a good time to be a mom Paid parental leave has gone from four months to six months to a year in the time between the 1970s and today.

Brandie Weikle

Torstar News Service

“I’m such a bad mom.” It’s a humble slag I’ve heard dozens — if not hundreds — of moms level against themselves as a preamble to some sort of confession that’s not much of a confession at all. “I’m such a bad mom. I let MacKenzie watch Paw Patrol on the iPad when I had the stomach flu.” “I’m such a bad mom. I was secretly glad when her team lost the hockey game so we didn’t have to come back to the arena on Sunday morning.” We’ve established this by now: Our generation of parents is more plagued with self-doubt than any that’s come before. We have an embarrassment of choice on everything from theories about infant sleep to where to send our kids to high school, and we get needlessly worked up over it all. And it’s no surprise given the keen sense we have that our choices are being closely

times. It’s about what works for your family and your circumstances. If you have any sort of choice whatsoever about whether or not to work, it’s a privilege. Full stop.

Kristen Bell, Mila Kunis and Kathryn Hahn in the film Bad Moms. Brandie Weikle says she’s heard dozens, if not hundreds, of mothers label themselves as “bad moms,” but she thinks they need to cut themselves some slack. contributed

monitored. After all, these are times when — even though the world is less dangerous than it was when we were growing up — your neighbour might call the Children’s Aid Society if you let your kids walk to the playground by themselves. Add to this that we document and share our lives — or at least the high-

light reels — through social media, and it’s no wonder we engage in so much comparison, disparaging our own parenting before anyone beats us to the punch. But despite all our insecurities, and the stresses we experience from trying to do too much, I still have to conclude that it is indeed a good time to

be a mother. Here’s why: No more Mommy Wars We’ve moved beyond — for the most part — tiresome conversations about whether it’s the right decision for women to work outside the home. If you’re engaging in so-called Mommy Wars over this question, you’re way behind the

Unprecedented opportunity Yes, we’ve still got some work to do on the small matter of the 80 cents we’re earning for every buck a man gets for the same work. But we’ve still got it far better than our moms, many of who can recall things like being asked for their husbands’ signatures when they tried to open bank accounts. Today women outgraduate men from university. The glass ceiling still exists, but it’s closer than it’s ever been. We may find ourselves pumping breast milk in lessthan-ideal surroundings in order to keep our standing in the workplace, but today it’s not uncommon for women to be promoted before or even during a parental leave — and that just didn’t happen before.

Technical helpers While our smartphones create non-stop distractions that can be entirely crazy-making if we don’t manage them mindfully, we’ve got convenience our predecessors couldn’t have fathomed quite literally in our back jean pockets. With a few taps we can make a piano teacher, handyman or takeout dinner appear on our doorsteps. Access a math tutorial video for homework trouble. Pay the hydro bill, pick up a side hustle, register a kid for camp. Trade outgrown toys and clothes for a skateboard.

The key to being able to appreciate these advantages and enjoy our lives more lies in learning to trust our instincts, fret less about our choices and lean on each other. That’s my Mother’s Day wish for all. Brandie Weikle is a parenting expert and the host of The New Family Podcast and editor of thenewfamily.com.

Brace for disasters more often: PM climate change

Canada needs to build to be more ‘resilient,’ Trudeau says Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard and Gatineau MP Steve McKinnon look on as PM Justin Trudeau speaks to media after a tour of a flooded area of Gatineau, Que. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is sounding the alarm on the frequency and intensity of natural disasters in Canada, which have pushed Ottawa’s bills for

federal help to $360 million a year since 2011. The numbers clearly suggest a dramatic escalation in the frequency and severity of natural calamities, a theme Trudeau echoed Thursday after embarking on a helicopter tour of flood-ravaged western Quebec. “We’re going to have to understand that bracing for a hundredyear storm is maybe going to happen every 10 years now or every few years,” the prime minister

said after his helicopter tour with Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard. “That means as we look to rebuild our communities, our homes, our infrastructures, we’re going to have to think about what we can do to rebuild better, to rebuild in ways that are going to be more resistant, more resilient to the unpredictability we are now living.” Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale also said Canadians will have to get used to climate

change-fuelled disasters, and quickly — including by planning buildings and communities to minimize the risk of damage in the first place. “The objective should be, rather than expecting to spend so much after the fact cleaning up, we should look for all of those opportunities to invest in mitigation and adaptation before the fact so that the losses will be minimized,” Goodale said. Election 2019

Canadian spies look for election ‘vulnerabilities’ The Communications Security Establishment has begun a promised review into the risks of foreign interference in the 2019 election, Torstar has learned. CSE, Canada’s signals intelligence and cyberdefence agency, is conducting a “risk assessment” into how vulnerable Canadian elections are to foreign hacking and information operations. The Liberal ordered the review as the scope of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election was being made public by

American intelligence agencies. “CSE has been asked to provide a threat assessment of the cyber threat environment as it relates to the Canadian democratic process, including the electoral system,” said Ryan Foreman, a spokesman for CSE. In the U.S. and French presidential elections, Russian-backed hackers have been accused of releasing damaging information about candidates in support of rivals friendlier to the Kremlin.

Airline parting ways with loyalty plan Air Canada announced it plans to start an in-house loyalty program in 2020 and not renew its contract with Aimia Inc., which runs Aeroplan. Here’s what that means for Aeroplan members earning rewards for flying Air Canada: What happens to my Aeroplan points? Nothing. Your Aeroplan balance remains intact. What changes is how you’ll earn points after June 2020 and what you can buy with those points. I’ve booked on Air Canada using Aeroplan points. What happens to my booking? Members who have already booked flights with their Aeroplan points will still be able to travel as planned.

An Air Canada plane flies underneath dark clouds above Frankfurt, Germany, on March 2. Air Canada said Thursday it will launch its own loyalty rewards plan in 2020 and not renew its contract with the company running Aeroplan, angering some points collectors. THE CANADIAN PRESS/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

What points do I earn when I fly on Air Canada? Until Air Canada’s contract with Aimia expires in June 2020, miles earned for travel on Air Canada flights will be credited to travellers’ Aeroplan accounts. After that, travellers who fly on Air Canada will earn points towards the company’s own loyalty program. The same applies to travel on Air Canada’s 26 Star Alliance

partners, including Air China, Lufthansa and United. Can I still use Aeroplan points to book Air Canada flights? Members can use their Aeroplan points to book Air Canada and Star Alliance flights until June 30, 2020. Aimia says it won’t stop offering flight rewards before then. After that, the answer is un-

clear. Air Canada said in a statement it intends to continue allowing Aeroplan members to redeem points for seats on Air Canada flights after that time. However, Aimia CEO David Johnston said in an interview that isn’t certain yet, as there’s still lots of discussions to be had. He said the company continues to work on alternatives for after Air Canada leaves the program, including the possibility of new partners. Does this change my Aeroplan credit card? Three banks offer Aeroplan credit cards: TD, CIBC and American Express. Those contracts expire in 2024, Johnston said, adding he’s not worried those companies will choose to follow Air Canada’s lead. He said the majority of Aeroplan members earn points not through flying but rather through the dollars they spend shopping while using these affiliated cards. THE CANADIAN PRESS

U.S. president abandons his rationale for the decision Over and over, for two days, U.S. President Donald Trump, VicePresident Mike Pence and the rest of their administration said Trump fired FBI director James Comey only at the recommendation of a senior official in the Department of Justice. Trump conceded Thursday that they were all lying. Abandoning his entire public rationale for the stunning decision on Tuesday, Trump told NBC anchor Lester Holt that he was planning to fire Comey even before he met with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. “He’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander. The FBI has been in turmoil. You know that, I know that, everybody knows that,” Trump told Holt in an interview.

boss’ ouster, said there has been “no effort to impede our investigation.” “You cannot stop the men and women of the FBI from doing the right thing,” he said. He also said he would not inform the White House about developments in the probe. Days before he was fired, Comey requested more resources to pursue his investigation, U.S. officials said, fuelling concerns that Trump was trying to undermine the probe. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

His comments deepen the credibility crisis facing an administration that has made lying a habit. And they further call into question the democratic legitimacy of his decision to terminate the man in charge of an investigation into whether his campaign associates colluded with Russian meddling in the presidential election. The administration had implausibly insisted that Trump had grown dismayed about Comey’s

unfair treatment of Hillary Clinton last year — that he was merely agreeing with the independent concerns Rosenstein expressed to him in a meeting on Monday and in a written memo. In Trump’s own letter to Comey, he said he was “accepting” a recommendation from Rosenstein and Sessions. But Trump gave an entirely different explanation to Holt. “I was going to fire Comey. My decision,” he said. “It was not — I

was going to fire Comey. There’s no good time to do it, by the way.” In another remarkable revelation in the interview — for which there is no current proof — Trump said he asked Comey directly to tell him, if “possible,” whether he is under investigation. Comey, he said, told him he is not. Anonymous Comey associates have told U.S. media outlets that Comey never told Trump he was not being investigated. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Executive order targets claims of voter fraud President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday launching a commission to review alleged voter fraud and voter suppression, building upon his unsubstantiated claims that millions of people voted illegally in 2016. The White House said the president’s “Advisory Commission on Election Integrity” would examine allegations of improper

voting and fraudulent voter registration in states and across the nation. The commission will report back to Trump by 2018. Trump has alleged, without evidence, that three million to five million people voted illegally in his 2016 election against Democrat Hillary Clinton. He has vowed since the start of his administration to investigate voter fraud. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

THE FANTASTIC HUMAN FAMILY The “March of Progress” image, where the knuckle-dragging ape transitions to upright modern man, doesn’t tell the whole story. For much of our species’ history, Homo sapiens co-existed with other close relatives in the genus Homo. Like us, they were tool-makers, fire-controllers, maybe even storytellers. But they weren’t us, exactly. And now our family tree has a new branch. 17, 000 ya

TASTE THE DIFFERENCE

In 2013, a huge cave of fossils belonging to a previously unknown, extinct human relative was found in South Africa. The species was named Homo naledi. A chemical analysis published this week in the journal eLife found the bones are between 236,000 and 335,000 years old. This poses a big puzzle: Naledi shares some features with modern humans, like delicate wrists and nimble hands suited for making tools. But its brain is half the size of ours and much of its anatomy resembles human ancestors from two million years ago. No one is sure yet if naledi is a primitive human relative that survived an unusually long time, a hybrid of some kind, or something else entirely. But the paper’s authors write that the species “possibly lived at the same time, and in the same place, as modern humans.” Here are some other relatives we walked the earth with, once upon an (approximate) time.

Taming the dog and pony show in focus

On media duty, King Arthur’s main men are sharp as swords Richard Crouse

For Metro Canada Guy Ritchie’s films have entertained me for years but I’m afraid he didn’t find me very interesting. The incident happened during my press day with Ritchie and Charlie Hunnam, the director and star of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. I first spoke with them for television. Hunnam answered my opening question about the film Excalibur, a precursor to their movie, enthusiastically. But I could feel Ritchie disengage. He sat back and went into autopilot, answering my questions by rote. The rest of the interview flew by in a flurry of quips and tossed off answers. Half-an-hour later I sat with them again to do a longer interview for print. “I’m glad we can make amends,” said Hunnam as I came in the room. “It seemed like you wanted to have a proper conversation and we were having a bit of a jolly up.” The whole experience was an example of the yin and yang of movie promotion. The yin was Ritchie, an intense man who refers to the walking a red carpet as “a dog and pony

show” before adding that’s not what he’s here for. The yang is Hunnam, an engaging actor who said, “We don’t make these things to live on in obscurity, we make them with the hope that people will see them and this is one of the ways we can help manifest that.” The duo have been all over the world talking to media people with perfectly coiffed hair and big smiles, answering the same questions on repeat. By the time I get them there’s

nothing new to ask about their update of the Arthurian legend. But there is an unspoken contract between my interview subjects and me. Whether it’s for television

or for the paper you hold in your hands, the deal is the same. They say something interesting and I report it. They get publicity and I get a story that my audience will hope-

fully enjoy. As Ritchie sat with his arms folded across his chest, I thought about our “contract” and the difference between the two men. Despite his tabloid appeal — for a time the British press made a sport of reporting on him — Ritchie strikes me as a private person. He’s more interested in what he’ll be working on next than the film he spent years making and has now signed off on. Or perhaps it’s that, as a director, he’s used to

being in control and in these situations he has to cede power to the interviewer. “We both know why we’re doing it,” Ritchie says, “but the red carpet last night, I’ll tell you, I felt soulless after that. After ten minutes get me off there because it takes me hours to recover.” Hunnam, the performer, is immediately warm and open. When Ritchie talks about losing patience on press days Hunnam jokes, “Guy Ritchie leaves the room and Johnny Nasty shows up.” Luckily, Johnny Nasty never showed. By the end of our time together the ice broke, Ritchie’s arms unfolded and he smiled. I’m not sure what happened other than he seemed to warm up to me when we talked generally about film and not specifically about King Arthur. We traded stories, discussed King Arthur, an actor’s connection to their director and not being imprisoned by fear. Maybe it was just me but for a moment it felt like we were talking over a beer in a bar and not fulfilling our respective contractual duties. It was, in his words, a little less of a dog and pony show. “I feel more satisfied now,’ said Hunnam as I left and another press person walked into the room to repeat the process. “I really felt bad after the [television] interview [with you]. I thought, ‘Man, that’s a serious cat and we really just f–ed around for four minutes.’ I’m glad we got into some of the nitty-gritty.”

Hollywood’s quiet leading man interview

Why Brendan Gleeson loves variety after 25 years in film Steve Gow

For Metro Canada Brendan Gleeson doesn’t have the hassles of most Hollywood leading men. Bulky, gruff-looking and beaming a thick Irish brogue, the acclaimed thespian rarely even gets approached in public. “The Harry Potter thing was just such a huge thing I suppose,” admitted the man behind the fantasy franchises’ Mad-Eye Moody. “But luckily enough, I was in enough getup that people don’t recognize me immediately.” Gleeson hasn’t just averted the public’s attention through prosthetics and extensive make-up however. After starring in over 50 movies as everything from a Newfoundland fisherman to Winston Churchill, the ver-

satile artist has disappeared into so many roles that he’s become one of cinema’s most sought-after character actors. “I have to be honest with you, I bore myself,” admitted Gleeson about his extensive range of characters. “I’m 25 years doing it so I’m sure I’m repeating myself (but) I love variety, I like the difference and finding out things. I like to be confronted with stuff I don’t already know.” For his latest project, Gleeson certainly learned a lot about a slice of history previously unknown to him. After all, Alone in Berlin cast the renowned actor as a German factory worker who covertly became a Nazi protester after the death of his son in the Second World War. “I do think that World War II is a place that would benefit from being muddied up a little bit in the sense that not everybody was a hero or a villain,” explained Gleeson of the moral drama about a remarkable real-life couple that opposed Nazism by placing propagandist postcards around Berlin opposing Hitler. While the couple’s dissen-

sion may have had limited success in the history books, their futile struggle against the Nazi regime was not lost on Gleeson. “I’m a great believer in the fact that given the chance, a human being wishes to be a decent one and the more we can look at somebody like the Quangels, it’s an inspiration,” said Gleeson about the film’s fictional version of Otto and Elise Hampel. “The apparent ineffectiveness of the protest, I think that’s a bigger statement because it means that they were adhering to what was best of themselves.” It wasn’t just the Hampels’ tale that appealed to Gleeson however. After a quarter of a century of moviemaking, the 62-yearold talent is also beginning to feel a personal responsibility to relate stories of the past to younger generations. Gleeson himself has four sons, two of whom have followed his career path. Eldest son Domhnall has reeled off a string of strong performances in major hits including The Revenant, The Force Awakens and Brooklyn.

Brendan Gleeson sees plenty of modern parallels in his new World War II drama Alone in Berlin. contributed

“I’m not sure their world will be different from that world for too much longer the way things are going,” laughs Gleeson of the next generation. “(But in) World War II, there’s a certain innocence in terms of the goodies and

the baddies that allows us to watch heroism without having to feel like we have to second guess it. “Wars now are so complicated in terms of the right and the wrong that it’s very difficult to find unsullied heroism.”

Humour ends up snatched Imagine the Hollywood pitch meeting where adventure comedy Snatched got the green light. Filmmaker: “Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn, together at last! Two generations, two funny ladies! Goldie is ending her 15-year screen retirement for this!” Studio suit: “But the script has them being kidnapped for ransom money in South America by very bad hombres! This actually happens to people!” The movie earns a few chuckles, but humour is largely held hostage by a lewd and lazy screenplay that wanders like Billy in The Family Circus. The abrupt manner in which characters come and go suggests a lot of effort and editing was expended to keep Snatched from getting too grim. And the two leads aren’t exactly a comedy match made in heaven. Snatched isn’t very funny, but at least it’s broad-minded about its boorishness. torstar news service

he announced the start of production on four sequels now scheduled to roll out from 2020 to 2025. That left Disney to plunge ahead on its own with Avatar Land, which opens May 27 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Florida. If all goes well, the park “will promote the films and the new films will of course circle back and promote the land,” Lewison says.

Remember the movie Avatar? Disney sure hopes you do You may not have thought much about the 2009 movie Avatar over the past eight years, but Disney sure has. The Magic Kingdom is wagering a reported half-billion dollars that you and zillions of other people will line up for new theme park attractions based on the movie’s bioluminescent world of Pandora. It’s a major gamble, even by Disney standards. While the movie smashed box-office records thanks to its dazzling 3D effects and higher 3D ticket prices, it’s also left little but a fading echo in pop-culture consciousness. “I’ve never seen anybody ever walking down street wearing an Avatar t-shirt,” says Martin Lewison, a theme park expert and business management professor at Farmingdale State College in New York. “There’s no real emotional connection with Avatar among the public despite the movie being so popular.” Cultural plunder But theme parks are big busi-

ness, and Disney is counting on what its executives call Avatar Land (the official name is Pandora: World of Avatar) to help keep that engine humming. In the fiscal year that ended in October, parks and resorts accounted for 31 per cent of Disney’s nearly $56 billion U.S. in revenue. Disney also wants to prove it can turn its newer cultural properties, which include Star Wars and the Marvel superhero franchise, into popular theme-park attractions. In that, it’s basically playing catch-up with rival Universal Studios, which launched a hugely successful Harry Potter theme park in 2010. Now the big question is whether Disney can pull that off with Avatar Land, or if it’s

just chasing unobtainium. (Yes, that’s an Avatar reference. See?) Odd property James Cameron, the mercurial director famous for Titanic and several other blockbusters, has been promising Avatar sequels almost since the original premiered. One had been in development since 2010. Disney licensed the park rights in 2011, when a sequel didn’t seem that far off. Little did Disney know. In 2013, Cameron announced his intention to film three follow-on films simultaneously, for release starting in 2016. But the date was pushed back until 2017, then 2018. In March, Cameron said 2018 was “not happening.” In April,

Beating Harry Potter One big reason the Walt Disney Co. has pushed ahead with Avatar Land -— not to mention Star Wars-themed attractions scheduled to open in 2019 — is the rising threat posed by Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. In 2015, about 138 million people visited Walt Disney Attractions, up nearly three per cent from the prior year. Universal Parks and Resorts saw less than a third as many visitors — 45 million — but that figure was up nearly 12 per cent, according to the trade group Theme Entertainment Association. “What Harry Potter did was to become a big public success and financial one as well,” says John Gerner, managing director of theme park consulting firm Leisure Business Advisors. “It really set a new bar for our industry.” the associated press

Discover bluefin tuna fishing in P.E.I. adventure

WHEN YOU GO

The province is the bluefin tuna capital of the world

Do this: Wicked Sea Adventures offers private catch-andrelease bluefin tuna fishing charters for $750/half day and $1,250/full day for up to eight people. You can join public group charters for about $135/half day and $200/full day. The company also offers deep-sea fishing, whale-watching trips and lobster demos.

Jennifer Bain

For Metro Canada Things get rowdy on the Shine Shack at 10:55 a.m., two hours into our private tuna charter on the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The fish finder goes berserk. There’s a tuna nearby. Captain Gerard Holland rips open a cardboard box filled with a bag of herring. He and first mate Jamie Hebert toss pieces of dead, stinky fish overboard to tempt the tuna. It’s windy so guts and scales fly back and get tangled in my hair. Fishing. You either love it or you just don’t get it. “Most people, the average Joe, just want a whale-watching tour,” allows Holland. “Catching a tuna can be a long, hard process.” People come from all over to fish here in the bluefin tuna capital of the world. Today, three

friends from Drummondville, Quebec have booked with Wicked Sea Adventures. First, we put out lines and troll for mackerel. They go into buckets filled with water until needed as live bait. When the tuna alarm beeps, the mackerel lines come up and three custom tuna fishing rods are let out with

live bait on the hooks. “I’d like to get a 1,000 pound one today,” admits Hebert. “Call the wife and kids, tell them to come to the shore, watch the crane, get pictures.” Tuna charters in Prince Edward Island are usually catchand-release. Unbeknownst to us, today is supposed to be different.

Holland pays upwards of $40,000 a year for the right to run catch-and-release charters and keep one tuna a year. Today, he figures, will be the day to tow the tuna back to the dock, have a crane lift it to be weighed, and then entertain offers from North American buyers or send it to Japan on consignment.

“There’s a fish right there,” Holland yells at 11:19 a.m. He has been tracking a “boil” — sort of a swell or wave — beside the boat. We rush to the side of the Shine Shack and peer at the sea. “We’ll have a hookup by the end of the day,” vows Holland using local slang for a tuna on the line. By noon, things quiet down. Fish eat big meals in the morning and evening and retreat from the bright, midday sun.

Get there: I flew Air Canada direct to Charlottetown. Get around: Rent a car to get around. Stay: Stay at the Holman Grand Hotel in Charlottetown.

“Tuna fishing is kind of like bear hunting,” opines Holland. “It can be hours of boredom and seconds of terror.” I may never know. I’ve got a flight to catch and can’t risk missing it for a tuna. The captain runs me to shore, mumbling: “I hate to take people in without a fish.” torstar news service The author was hosted by Tourism P.E.I., which didn’t review or approve this story.

Shaking up France’s transport monopoly transportation

Travellers on the A1o out of Paris weigh in on cheap ride They’re dubbed the Macron buses, cheap long-distance rides across France that were among Emmanuel Macron’s few notable achievements before his meteoric rise to the French presidency — part of his efforts to loosen up France’s monopoly-bound transport sector and invigorate the economy. A ride on one such bus on the A10 highway out of Paris shows how the president-elect might try to change the country after his inauguration on Sunday. The ride took place on a national holiday — so most French businesses were closed and the streets of the capital were empty. The bus was an exception. Fully booked, it was heading to Orleans, Poitiers, all the way south to France’s famous wine region of Bordeaux. Some on the bus were heading home after a weekend in Paris. Others were visiting family. All had one thing in

common: a cheap ticket. “I find it good. Competition brings down prices, we see it with Uber taxis,” said Anthony Coste, a 24-year-old sales manager returning to Bordeaux after three years in Paris. A train ticket to Bordeaux would have set him back more than $104 — but his ticket with bus company Ouibus cost only $37. Macron became a household name as economy minister because of a controversial 2015 work reform law. One of its most famous measures removed restrictions on new bus lines to increase competition and lower prices, nicknamed “transport for the poor.” The so-called Macron Law, the 39-year-old’s keystone achievement, has a mixed legacy. It aimed mainly to free up France’s notoriously inflexible labour rules but was opposed by many on the left and provoked widespread protests. Some 6.2 million people took Macron buses to get around in the year after the law, according to the National Federation of National Travelers. However, the law fell dramatically short of its goal of creating 22,000 jobs, according to French media. Megabus, one of the Macron

Law companies, went bust in 2016. And some see such budget services as a symbol of the erosion of France’s worker-friendly labour model.

“It represents this Uberization. We’re willing to pay less and give up good service,” said Pierre France, a 29-year-old researcher taking the bus to Poi-

tiers. “It’s an economic choice that we make purely based on cost, because it’s much cheaper, but without thinking about the long-term consequences.”

But he acknowledged the law has its benefits. A frequent traveller, he’s encountered people from low-income communities on bus trips who wouldn’t have been able to travel otherwise. One of the most noticeable — and controversial — points of the Macron Law aimed to relax the strict rules that closed French stores on Sunday and in the evening, especially in tourist areas. Macron’s law has left an indelible mark on tourist spots around France, from the Normandy seaside town of Deauville to the glitz of Paris’ Champs-Elysees. In major department stores, an agreement was made with powerful workers’ unions that gave employees perks for working on Sunday. Conversely, pro-business conservatives argue the changes were too incremental, not fundamental enough to fix an economy with chronically high unemployment. Other than the labour law, in terms of Macron’s political legacy, so far there’s relatively little to go on, as the former banker has never held elected office. His biggest impact on France has arguably been the ideological implosion of the French left. the associated press

White nixes GSP fight UFC president Dana White has pulled the plug on Georges StPierre’s comeback fight against middleweight champion Michael Bisping. St-Pierre, who has not fought since November 2013, says he is ready to fight after October. White says that’s too late. “I made this GSP fight, we did a press conference. The thing was supposed to happen in July. Michael Bisping is going to have to defend his title now. We’re not waiting for GSP,” White told Fox Sports Australia ahead of this Saturday’s UFC 211 in Dallas. The 35-year-old St-Pierre last fought in November 2013. When the Montrealer’s return was announced in February, the UFC said the Bisping-GSP fight would take place in the second half of the year. Georges St-Pierre St-Pierre offered his own take on Getty Images that in a social media video posting last Friday. “Mr Bisping, I cleared my entire schedule to get ready for training camp after the summer. So I can fight you any time after October. You pick the date. Let’s get it on.” The Canadian Press

Bullish with the ’pen Jays’ Ailing arms

Richard Griffin

Less than 24 hours after lefthander Francisco Liriano managed to record just six outs in a failed start versus the Indians on Wednesday, the 33-year-old was placed on the Blue Jays’ 10-day disabled list with inflammation in his left shoulder. He gave up seven runs in two-plus innings and is now 2-2, with a 6.35 ERA. Toronto’s five-man rotation was projected as the strength of this Jays team heading into the season. The caveat is there was little in the way of readyfor-prime-time backup starters in the minors. Health of the rotation was seen as a key to any success. That’s why it has become so alarming to management that Liriano has joined J.A. Happ (left elbow) and Aaron Sanchez (blister) as starters currently on the DL. Sanchez, of course, has been there twice, with blister and nail problems to his middle finger. The Seattle Mariners, who have four injured starters of their own, claimed righthander Casey Lawrence on waivers from the Jays. Lawrence started two games for the Jays earlier in the season.

Gibbons has been proud of the compete level, even when losing. Much of that is the bullpen being able to keep them close through middle innings. Tepera sees the same light down the track as the end of the tunnel approaches. “You have to see it,” he insisted. “We’re fighting. We’re battling. We have some big injuries. A lot of our offensive guys are coming back soon and that is just going to be another step in the right way. Lately we’ve been throwing well as a bullpen. We’ve had some stuff go down as starters, whatever. Hopefully they all get healthy but we’re just going to roll with it. We’re going the right way.” “Sometimes you just have to get through the game,” Gibbons simplified the goal. “You map it out and you’re probably going to need everybody or damn near everybody, if that (starter) comes out early. The game’s so different now. Basically nearly everybody’s a one-inning guy.” Richard Griffin is a sports columnist with the Toronto Star
