My hope is that we all see past the doom and gloom and make the most of what we have when we can. Various major events have been cancelled or postponed, yet there’s nothing stopping smaller gatherings celebrating in their own way. Take the races for instance; public entry may not be permitted, but dress up anyway, break out the bubbly, pass the canapes and celebrate while watching them on television. Ōtautahi Christchurch’s Metropol Circulation BLOOM Festival is a great opportunity to explore the city, its attractions and events in full spring dress. Get out there and get to it. Here’s to hope.
“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’…” – Alfred, Lord Tennyson We all need hope, especially when times are tough. Hope comes in different guises. As the days become warmer, many hope that they can head out and enjoy some of the exciting events on Ōtautahi Christchurch’s social calendar. Shimmering on the horizon are outings to the beach, the park, even the races maybe, although when it comes to large gatherings, we are all still at the mercy of Covid-19 and can only hope our efforts so far will allow some leeway in the near future. Event organisers hope the alert levels in Christchurch will drop further sooner so the activities they’ve invested time, money and imagination in will proceed.

Stoddart exhibition opens A special exhibition is now on, marking the anniversary of women winning the right to vote in Aotearoa New Zealand in September 1893.
U
niversity of Canterbury art collections curator Lydia Baxendell has curated a special exhibition of watercolours by Margaret Stoddart, shown at the former home of her fellow student at the University’s School of Fine Arts to commemorate the occasion. Set in the blossoming garden of Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House, nestled beside the leafy University campus
in Ilam, ‘Margaret Stoddart, Garden Scene’ reveals a small, yet important collection of Stoddart’s paintings from the University of Canterbury art collection. Sheppard briefly attended Canterbury College (now the University of Canterbury) School of Fine Arts as a day student. Her name appears written near Stoddart’s in the Canterbury College School of Art Register in 1882 and 1883.
The booklover’s destination Whether it’s Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction, New Zealand, Religion, Classics, Poetry, Young Adult or Children’s tales, we will have just what you want.
This rarely seen historic Roll Book will be displayed alongside the Stoddart watercolours. The exhibition opened last month, running until Sunday December 12, combining a programme of related talks and events during the exhibition, including the Christchurch Heritage Festival. A collaboration between Te Puna Rakahau o Macmillan Brown Library and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga, the ‘Margaret Stoddart, Garden Scene’ exhibition is free however usual admission charges apply for Kate Sheppard House.

ecognisable for her appearances and humour on shows such as the Comedy Gala, AotearoHA, TV3’s After Hours, and Funny Girls, plus as a regular panellist on 7 Days and The Project, Justine has established herself as one of the best stand ups in New Zealand. She’s won the Billy T Award, the NZ Comedy Guild Best MC (thrice) and the NZCG Best Female Comedian title (four times). Although born in Auckland, she was raised in Christchurch from about a month old. “I lived in the same house in Wainoni until I left to go to art school in Auckland when I was 16,” she recalls. “My memories of Christchurch are of an amazing childhood, hooning around on my bike with my sister and cousins. “We would have awesome family holidays away in our caravan, swimming in rivers and getting a milkshake for a dollar. “In my pepeha my awa (river) is the Waimakiriri and my maunga (mountain) the Southern Alps. Even though I’m not there now, that’s where I grew up.” Justine’s lifestyle has changed greatly since those carefree days, and so too has Christchurch. The memories remain but now the city is more of a blip on the gig touring radar rather than home sweet home. “The city has changed so dramatically that it’s hard to reconcile it with the place I grew up because so much has gone,” she says, but is quick to add that the revitalisation of Christchurch is amazing to see.
“It’s a great city with heart and guts.” “I love it when I can return. Performing at the Christchurch Town Hall on last year’s 7 Days Live tour was extremely emotional for me because I used to sing there in the school choir, and also the refurbishment is incredible! It looks like it did when I was 12. I burst into tears after my stand up set, but in a good way haha. I got a tattoo that day to celebrate! (Sorry mum!)” Justine’s entrée into comedy happened thanks to a former boss recognising her talent. “I had really been drifting around, art school, waitressing, travelling, and I was 26 when my boss recognised my smart mouth and signed me up for an open mic stand up night. After running away a few times I finally gave it a go and it was the most terrifying and rewarding thing I had ever done. “I absolutely love my job and I appreciate how lucky I am to be able to say that. Stand up was such a new small scene back then and we were all so excited to be performing and working it all out.” As for her inspiration – it’s all around, she says. “I’ve always been a great people watcher. People are so funny all the time to me. It’s addictive!” Her muses are comediennes such as Lucille Ball, Carole Burnett, Betty White, and Bette Midler. “They paved the way for us, and if I’ve been through some sexist shit in my career, imagine then! Props ladies.” The 7 Days Live tour will be in Christchurch on November 27 at the Town Hall.

A grand revitalisation of Cathedral Square Prior to the 2010 earthquakes, Cathedral Square was the undisputed heart of Christchurch. Now an ambitious crowd-funded project is set to restart that heart, and again make the Square a place for the people. Christchurch businessman and project founder Darin Rainbird explains …
Project founder Darin Rainbird outside the newly strengthened Chief Post Office building in Cathedral Square, Christchurch.
10 14 October, 2021 Metropol
ast month I launched a PledgeMe campaign to support my plan to convert the restored 140-year-old former Chief Post Office in Cathedral Square, into ‘The Grand’. The intention is that it becomes a world-class destination of food and entertainment, complete with an artisan French bakery, visitor information centre and one of New Zealand’s largest outdoor plazas. The underlying philosophy is to create a space where people can meet, greet, socialise, play, and enjoy. Cathedral Square has always been a focal point for Christchurch. Some exciting developments have brought more people back into the CBD, but there’s very little linkage between them. Being right in the centre, I believe that The Grand can bring together the likes of the new Regent Street Precinct, The Terrace, The Crossing, and the soon to be completed Cathedral and be that vibrant central space for the people.
Saved by foresight The Chief Post Office building is a rare surviving piece of heritage architecture still standing in Christchurch. Designed by a colonial architect William Henry Clayton in the 19th-century Italianate style, it features a central clock tower resembling a scaled down Big Ben. The iconic 750-kilogram bell was recently repaired and returned to the tower. The building’s survival is down to the foresight and determination of its owner Gordon Chamberlain, who had already done significant strengthening before the earthquakes. That makes it the perfect space for two floors of local produce, art and entertainment.
We [the project team] decided that this was a space for Canterbury, so we wanted it to be owned by the people of Canterbury. The crowdfunding option allows us to give everyone the opportunity to participate if they want to.
Community support A key part of the project has been the incredible community support. We [the project team] decided that this was a space for Canterbury, so we wanted it to be owned by the people of Canterbury. The crowdfunding option allows us to give everyone the opportunity to participate if they want to. We have already approached our contractors to be part of the project, and they’re taking equity shares in lieu of what they would normally make on a project like this. Our suppliers have also done the same or just provided us with equity funding in order to complete the project.
Crowdfunding Anyone interested in making a pledge has until October 27 to do so. The target is $800,000 and at the time of Metropol going to print, more than $360,000 had been pledged to the project by 72 people. Visit www.pledgeme.co.nz or the website below. www.thegrand.co.nz

Big band bash Just in time for warmer weather, The Christchurch Big Band Festival is celebrating its 15th year in Ōtautahi this October.
T
he festival brings fresh, musical vibrancy to Christchurch streets and venues in spring, attracting thousands of listeners to exciting, toe-tapping entertainment all around the city. Most of the performances are free events and there are usually between three and five performances running concurrently at different venues.
Taking place over Labour weekend means plenty of fun guaranteed for all. You will be spoilt for choice with all of the talented performers, and definitely be struggling to decide which ones to attend. Bands from all over New Zealand gather in Christchurch to play big band-style jazz, providing performance opportunities for more than 300 musicians across 60
scheduled performances. This year is featuring the Rodger Fox Big Band, performing with Michael Houstoun and Erna Ferry at a Gala Performance at The Piano. Other locations for performances include Victoria Square, Riverside Market, Fat Eddie’s, as well as onboard the iconic Christchurch tram. The festival is completed with a Big Band Picnic in the Botanical Gardens, a crowd favourite and the perfect way to close out all of the fun. Featuring as many of the Big Bands as possible, the gardens will come alive with two stages, and lots of great music. For the full programme and all the dates and times, visit the website. www.chchbigbandfest.com

Prevent pet post lockdown blues Shifting down the lockdown levels can be challenging for our furry friends.
he current pandemic poses stressors for our much loved furry members of the family, our puppies and dogs. One of the largely positive aspects of Covid-19 lockdowns is that we are fortunate to be at home spending quality time with our pets. They get their regular, daily walks, we entertain them around the home with interactive games of play and enjoy their company in our downtime. Then restrictions ease and we are back to work and our dogs are left at home alone once again and can develop conditions known as separation anxiety. This is when they become unsettled as we are suddenly not around and this can lead to selfdestructive behaviour; vocalisation, toileting inappropriately, and refusing to eat among other things. Veterinarian Sarah Ryan says an important place to start that will assist with remedying the situation is to establish a structured routine for the dog such as morning and evening walks, a play session and leaving them with an enrichment item, such as a stuffed Kong toy to keep them occupied, when leaving the house. Some softly playing music can also act as a calming influence and reduce anxiety. “Puppies also can suffer from a lack of early socialisation with other dogs, people and places. For example, it is not uncommon for these puppies to startle at new objects in their environment when out walking such as a bus or motorcycle driving past. They can overcome this lack of confidence with time and training. “I can offer more detailed one-onone training sessions to demonstrate how to implement techniques to help your dog cope comfortably with your transition back to a pre-lockdown regime or your puppy gaining confidence in the world,” she adds. Call Sarah on 021 357 332, phone Ourvets St Albans on 03 355 6747 or email admin@ourvets.co.nz www.ourvetsstalbans.co.nz

ilm festivals are one way to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy cutting edge and also controversial national and international films. Currently on is the Show Me Shorts Film Festival. A showcase of the 2021 programme is Farbod Arebili’s short film Forbidden to See Us Scream in Tehran, which highlights the current situation of Iranian women prohibited from singing and performing. It focuses on an Iranian woman who plans to change things by organising an underground concert. The frontwoman for an Iranian death metal band, she risks
out & about everything as she plots to call the cops on her own underground concert in the hopes that the raid will help her secure her asylum in another country. This topical film sheds light on the reality of banned Western music in Iran which was put in place in 1979, Iranian women not being allowed to sing or perform publicly and live concerts being banned for female solo singers. It has screened at a variety of film festivals including the Oscar qualifying Cleveland International Film Festival. Director/Writer/Songwriter Farbod Ardebili has been residing
Footsteps on the Wind
in the US since 2014. He is a Sundance Fellow and has written and directed several awardwinning shorts. Ardebili has been recognised by numerous international film festivals such as Fantastic Fest, Cleveland International Film Festival, Show Me Shorts, Calgary International Film Festival, Sun Valley Film Festival, and many more. Forbidden To See Us Scream In Tehran is currently screening in the Show Me Shorts Film Festival until October 21. In another of this year’s ‘Shorts’ screening until October 21, musician Sting has collaborated with filmmaker Maya Sanbar on an animated short film which focuses on refugees and climate change. Winner of Oscar-qualifying awards at Cinequest Film Festival and Flicker’s Rhode Island International Film Festival, Sanbar’s Footsteps On The Wind, tells the story of two siblings who go on a mysterious journey after tragically losing their parents. The 17-time Grammy Awardwinning Artist Sting gave his refugee-inspired song “Inshallah” to Maya Sanbar so that she could create an animation film as a therapy tool for traumatised refugee children and to raise awareness of the growing refugee crisis around the world. It is the
first animated short film ever made to a song by Sting. Footsteps On the Wind has won a variety of Awards including the Oscar-qualifying Awards at Cinequest Film Festival and Flicker’s Rhode Island International Film Festival. “To me, “Inshallah”- which means “if God is willing, then it shall come to pass” - sounded like a prayer that people in this situation may recite. I imagined myself in that circumstance, wanting to bring my family to safety in a very dangerous situation,” says Sting. Director Maya Sanbar is a multimedia artist who can relate to the plight of refugees as her own family has a history of refugee displacement, her father having fled Haifa, Palestine in 1948. Maya joined forces with codirectors Gustavo Leal and Faga Melo, the founders of the Brazilian award-winning film production company Dirty Work to create an animated film to the haunting tune, Inshallah, produced by her company Chasing the Light Studio. Maya, who wrote the screenplay for the film with Pedro Paulo de Andrade, has worked on a variety of films and documentaries including Wajib, Freak Show, House in the Fields, The Idol, The Muslims Are Coming, The Time That Remains and Trouble The Water.

Dealing with your legalities Paperwork doesn’t fill most hearts with joy, but it runs the gamut from essential to life-enhancing. It’s smart to get it done but even smarter to get it done by Pegasus Bay Law, who thrive on putting your life in the best order.
he property market is running hot right now, and the friendly team in both offices are ready to assist with all aspects of buying and selling. They take the administrative responsibility while you enjoy the excitement of a new venture. Leaving this world without a clear legal will can create chaos for loved ones left to sort things out, and they might not guess correctly what you wanted. Worst case scenario is that your legacy is a family feud. Making a will takes the burden from your family and sets out your wishes. It should be regularly updated to reflect the changes in your life. Likewise, you should consider putting enduring powers of attorney into place while you are able to choose who is best to assist you if you are no longer capable of making your own decisions. Home-based business boom Many successful businesses have started in the home or garage and some of them have flourished.
J
eff Bezos initially sold books out of his garage, and went on to create Amazon in 1995. Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in his Harvard dorm. Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded their company in a garage. Apple’s Steve Jobs used his parents’ garage. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel or have that next big-idea to be a home-based entrepreneur. Home based businesses can range from internet based opportunities through to trades like electricians, plumbers, caterers,
gardeners and builders, to professions such as lawyers, accountants, advisors and counsellors to mention a few. Whether by choice or by default, more people are starting or buying home-based businesses. “Especially since lockdown, home-based businesses for sale have grown to become one of our more popular searches,” says Richard O’Brien from the Business for Sale website nzbizbuysell.co.nz. “For some, the pandemic turned everything on its head. Family and lifestyle became
more important, and there was a reminder that it’s not a good idea to have all your eggs in one basket. This, coupled with the value of the internet and growth in online opportunities, sparked a heightened interest in ‘side hustles’ and fully-fledged home based businesses,” he says.
“Working from home can offer great flexibility and an improved lifestyle, along with lower overheads and less travel. If you’re a self-starter, disciplined and focused, a home-based business can be a very rewarding and exciting option.”

Embracing realty technology The saying “the more things change, the more they stay the same” is one that can be applied to the real estate industry in 2021.
N
ationwide Covid-19 lockdowns have forced vendors and purchasers to look at doing things differently, although they still want the same outcomes. Simon Herbert of Harcourts Grenadier Avonhead says everyone has had to embrace technology, so they could continue with their property goals. Figures from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) show that in August, 26 percent of all properties nationwide were sold by auction. REINZ says that this is the highest percentage of homes sold by auction for an August since records began. “The fact that we can use Skype and Zoom and hold auctions online, means that the whole industry doesn’t have to hit pause. It’s been quite inspiring to see how people have adapted,” says Simon. This virtual real estate process does mean that trust is more important than ever, especially if people are buying sight-unseen. “Who would have ever thought 10 or 15 years ago that someone would buy a property from a video? Buyers are so interested in Christchurch that many are buying without setting foot in the property.”
Simon says that selling under lockdown conditions can be distressing for vendors, because there are limitations, both geographical and technological. “It limits who can view your property, where they come from. It’s also limiting for potential purchasers who might be uncomfortable with the online world.” He says this is where agents really have to step up. If a purchaser can’t physically get to see a property properly they are putting much more trust in the agent and the vendor that they will be transparent. “As an agent, under the lockdown conditions you have to display the property and look at it as if you were looking for yourself.” He says that he is in a very fortunate position, with an unwavering support team behind him at the office. “My manager Lisa, at Avonhead, is always accessible. As soon as anything changes as far as what can and can’t be done under different alert levels, there’s full communication all the time. Leadership like that translates into your work ethic and how you treat your clients.” Call Simon on 027 428 6498 or email simon.herbert@harcourts.co.nz

Long and luscious
If you’re after some extra length or volume for your next big event, why not think about Great Lengths tape in extensions? Quick and relatively low maintenance, tape-in extensions are perfect for short-to-medium term use.
T
ape-in extensions are installed by sandwiching thin sections of hair between two extension pieces, using a medical-grade adhesive strip. The strip is designed to lay flat against the scalp, so it does not appear bulky, and when installed by a certified extension professional, will blend well with your natural hair. The maintenance of tape extensions is relatively straightforward, and the tapes will need to be reinstalled every six to eight weeks. For clients looking for a more long-term option, we recommend the keratin-bonded extensions. These use keratin (the building block of human hair) to attach to
the hair shaft, and are incredibly natural-looking. The keratin bonds flex, move, and swell with the natural hair, making them much more gentle on the scalp than other long-term extensions options. All Great Lengths extensions are made from 100% sustainably sourced, traceable human hair that is incredibly high quality. They come in a range of lengths, textures, and colours, so there really is something to suit most hair types. For more information about hair extensions, make an appointment for a consultation with our extensions specialist. www.hairart.co.nz

Tightening, the gentle way Trending procedures in cosmetic medicine are minimally invasive treatments that stimulate collagen production. One of the newest of these are mono threads; smooth, non-barbed threads that tighten the skin when lifting is not required.
I
deal for rejuvenating the skin without adding volume or ‘bulk’ to the treatment area, mono threads are a
complement to volumising treatments such as dermal fillers. Inserted into the dermal layer of the skin, the
threads activate collagen synthesis to gradually tighten and rejuvenate the skin. They provide support to the skin and help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by improving skin texture. The mono threads used at Face Value are made from polydioxanone, a durable, flexible, and absorbable polymer which have been used in surgery as absorbable stitches for decades. Multiple threads are inserted, often in a mesh-like pattern, stimulating the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid where they are placed. They are gradually absorbed and broken down by the body leaving skin
feeling tighter and looking more youthful. Typically, 10-30 threads that are pre-threaded onto a fine needle are used to treat an area. There is no downtime apart from the possibility of slight bruising. Results are most noticeable after eight to twelve weeks and last around twelve months or longer. Suitable treatment areas include cheeks, lower face and jowls, around the mouth and perioral lines, crows feet, and they are great for neckline and skin laxity. Eyes that pop
You want your eye make-up to make your eyes pop. The beauty of eyeshadow is that it is buildable, so start gentle and build slowly to create more drama. The outer crease is where you want to focus the depth of colour, and the inner corner is where you want to brighten and focus on lighter shades and shimmers.
The art of make-up is one to admire, and often a special occasion calls for an expert to work their magic. However learning a few tricks of the trade can make achieving beautiful, polished make-up at home a whole lot easier.

While a bold lip colour is fun, it also requires a lot of touching up. A shade similar to your natural lip colour is always a winner and more forgiving than bright pinks and reds. However, this neutral shade will be different for everyone. Whatever you choose for your lips, keep in mind the maintenance that comes with it.

Waxing lyrical about hearing From the moment you walk through the door of the recently established Bellbird Hearing clinic, you have a sense of a warm and caring environment. The waiting area is inviting, the staff welcoming – a place designed to overcome any reluctance patients may associate with requiring treatment for hearing loss.
A
fter any ear wax removal, we automatically conduct a hearing test to check whether there are any underlying hearing issues,” says owner and senior audiologist Sam Sloane. Age is a central factor in hearing loss; women over the age of 65 and men over the age of 57 can expect permanent underlying
hearing loss. Other common factors include loud noise exposure and ear infections. Typical signs of hearing loss might be missing soft speech consonants; Tinnitus (a ringing or hissing sound); and not hearing the sound of rain falling and native bird song. “It happens so gradually that people often don’t perceive the change, and often
report that their hearing is fine and that people just don’t speak clearly enough,” says Sam. He and his experienced team have helped thousands of people to better hearing. “Our expertise is in triaging the issue and making the correct appointment for the individual,” he says.
Independently owned
Latest technology
Locally owned and fully independent, Bellbird Hearing is welcoming and comfortable, and not aligned with particular brands of hearing aid technology. If the need for a hearing aid is indicated, the company carries an extensive range of products from all the main manufacturers such as Phonak, GN Resound, Beltone, Unitron, Starkey, Signia, Oticon and Widex. “It is a huge advantage to be independent. It means we can choose technology to suit the individual’s particular needs,” says Sam. “Where once a person might have gone home and put the hearing aid in the drawer because it just didn’t work for them, we can ensure they go out the door with technology that enhances their life.”
A high proportion of hearing aid candidates desire a totally invisible hearing device, he says. “There are a multitude of tiny hearing aids on the market including the Phonak Lyric and Widex Moment IIC. “Starkey, an American manufacturer, offers some of the best miniature in-the-ear hearing aids in the world. Early next year it plans to release new hearing devices, including a very small completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aid called the Evolv AI. Despite its small size, it will be able to deliver sound from your mobile phone and is capable of making 55 million sound adjustments every hour to optimise the sound and speech quality in any environment.”

Conscious choices
Sustainability is a hot topic right now, and the desire to purchase environmentally conscious products is growing every day. When it comes to the great outdoors, often those that love it want to protect it. And, when investing in items to wear, both in the mountains and in the city, it is a huge win if these pieces are made in a way that is kind to the planet. Newly opened local store Yonder, in the Christchurch CBD, is helping set a benchmark with their ethical and sustainably made products. There is transparency in the items you are buying and a peace of mind that you’re investing in environmentally responsible pieces. Items instore are designed to be functional for everyday – from adventure inspired casual clothing, through to technical
garments for biking, hiking, running, walking, & surfing Picture is an innovative brand that develops products to work how you need them, and look the part too – all their products are made from a minimum average of 50% recycled, organic, bio-sourced, or recovered materials. They also come with a lifetime repair warranty, to ensure products live their fullest life. Saola is the footwear brand your feet need to meet. From recycled PET bottles, Bloom Foam, organic cotton, and cork comes the ultimate lightweight and comfortable shoes. Both Picture and Saola are available at Yonder.
ore than just a dining experience, the restaurant and bar has established itself as a destination offering exquisite food and drinks, and an atmosphere like no other. Their focus on local, fresh and refined food shines in the new spring menus, which continue to evolve and refresh as more produce comes into season. Celebrating food in an understated way is at the core of gin gin’s offering, and by sourcing as much produce locally as possible, the dishes work to celebrate the delicious ingredients in their most natural form. Behind the bar, inspiration is always flowing. The classics menu takes a tried and true cocktail and gives it a gin gin spin. Bar manager Martyn says one of his favourites is The Charlie Chaplin. They take a cocktail that has stood the test of time, and apply an amazing New Zealand product to it, the Curiosity New Zealand Sloe Gin, which gives it a whole new life. Outside seating is perfect for the upcoming long, warm evenings and the unique location on eclectic New Regent Street makes for a very special dining experience.

Discover the flavours of spring With the arrival of spring and warmer days, a weekend trip to Barker’s Foodstore has never been a better idea.
T
he iconic Kiwi brand has created the perfect destination for escaping the hustle and bustle. Barker’s Foodstore and Eatery is a purpose-built landmark, set on the picturesque banks of the Waihi River in Geraldine. On a beautiful spring day, the space really comes to life.
The gorgeous greenery of the forest fauna and the nearby flowing stream is truly tranquil, and the river walkway is the perfect place to stroll and soak it all in. The eatery offers complimentary product tasting and range viewing, as well as an innovative menu incorporating the much-loved Barker’s
products of course. For summer drink inspiration, the syrup tasting station is a must-try. Test and enjoy a range of delicious fruit syrups and find your new favourite summer mixer. Or try a refreshing fruit spritzer, served with fresh lemon and mint. Flavours include the classic favourite, rhubarb with raspberry and rosehip, or the delicious new pink grapefruit and lemon. The tasting table is popular with all visitors, and for good reason. It is pure flavour heaven, with 16 Barker’s products on rotation for guests to interact with, taste, and learn what ingredients go into them. You can figure out your favourites and purchase a few goodies to take home to have on hand for all summer BBQ needs. For a unique gifting idea, personalising products is a fun way to add a special touch to a delicious Barker’s product. The interactive iPad creates magic and lets you get creative with
personalised labels. A visit to the eatery for breakfast before a browse around the Geraldine shops makes for a perfect, and delicious start to the day. The new spring menu is currently being developed and will feature some amazing local producers. The menu is carefully curated to celebrate seasonally inspired food, including fresh and locally sourced eggs, cheese, salmon, and artisan salami. Speaking of cheese, after your wander around the shops, pop back into the eatery for a luxurious wine and cheese platter. The Barker’s Tasting platter has perfectly matched cheese to Barker’s chutneys, accompanied by Geraldine Butchery pastrami and venison salami. Paired with a wine or beer, this makes for a dreamy afternoon. For more information, phone 03 693 9727 or visit www.barkersfoodstore.nz Metropol 14 October, 2021 45

A city in full
BLOOM
A key part of BLOOM is the ‘bouquet’ of fun spring activities for young and old, including:
Explore spring flowers – you can’t help but trip over daffodils, cherry blossoms and a host of other beautiful flowers as you travel around Christchurch. Head to Hagley Park or the Kurashiki Gardens in Halswell to enjoy some of the best blooms in full swing.
Surf and ski in one day – there are few places in the world where you can do this and Christchurch is just the place to tick this off your list. Head out early in the morning to one of the three ski fields within two hours and round out an epic day by cooling off at one of the local surf breaks.
City-cation – support local and check out some of the amazing attractions that (when borders were open) drew tourists from all over the world. Take a punt down the Avon, have a mini-adventure with a hired kayak from the Antigua Boat Sheds, jump on a tram, wander the Christchurch Botanic Gardens or avoid a springtime shower by exploring the Canterbury Museum or Christchurch Art Gallery.
Dine outside – bask in the sun at one of the city’s many outdoor cafes or restaurants. If you haven’t already, check out one of the rooftop bars in the CBD for unbeatable views.
Loren Heaphy ChristchurchNZ’s General Manager Destination and Attraction says ensuring a vibrant city and strong domestic visitor economy is a vital part of the city’s response to the social and economic impacts of Covid-19 – and BLOOM contributes to this. “Last year, during the BLOOM season, from September to November, there was a 99.8 percent drop in international arrivals at Christchurch Airport compared to the 48 14 October, 2021 Metropol
same period in 2019 and with borders remaining closed these businesses continue to be reliant on local and domestic markets to keep afloat. “Recent alert level changes have put even more pressure on and so now is the time to really show our support. That’s why part of our focus in BLOOM is to remind people of the compelling reasons to get out and support local – to book tickets, visit restaurants and bars, and
celebrate spring in our beautiful city, Covid alert levels permitting of course,” says Heaphy. The central city streets will be adorned with BLOOM-themed flags, tree lights, bunting and an Insta-worthy 5m long BLOOM sign on the banks of the Avon River. Keep an eye on the website for all the happenings. www.bloomnz.com

Delectable Victorian treats Victorian society was renowned for its high tea. Scrumptious scones (with jam and cream), Battenberg cake, lemon posset and other traditional treats were all on the menu for the aristocracy. Those same delicacies are still highly regarded these days and high tea is often a treat for special occasions.

n Christchurch, there’s nowhere better to go to indulge in a leisurely brunch, lunch or high tea than Penny Black Victorian Tearoom at The Tannery. The tearoom is a familyowned business where sisters Tanu and Mauly Srivastav take pride in creating an authentic experience for patrons. Tanu says it’s a destination reminiscent of a time when ‘taking tea’ in a fine establishment was an occasion. “It’s a place for people when they want more than to just grab a coffee, an unhurried way to enjoy your leisure time. You’ll get extra-special service in the Victorian tradition and you can soak up the ambience of the era.” The food is made fresh, daily in their kitchen and many of the recipes come from her
English staff who had them handed down from their grandparents. You’ll find quaintly-named dishes on the menu such as Eggy Bread, HRH Eggs Benedict and The Duchess Coddled Eggs - a traditional English egg dish with cream and fresh herbs served with toast and bacon. Choose from a variety of high teas served on fine china, with beautiful table linen, tiered high tea stands and elegant silverware. Birthdays, anniversaries, and bridal showers are all catered for and will be made into memorable affairs where you’re treated like an aristocrat. Return of a delicious delicacy The season of happiness has arrived. And we aren’t just talking about the warmer days. It is officially whitebait season!
A
delicacy that holds a special place in the hearts and bellies of Kiwis, a whitebait fritter is always a long-awaited delight that arrives along with spring. Red Post Café in Culverden is renowned for their celebration of whitebait season. Its fresh West Coast whitebait is always courtesy of the same and trusted supplier each year, and is of the highest quality. West Coast whitebait is on offer in the café for three months from September to November, always deliciously fresh. The café is just an hour and a half out of Christchurch, making for a lovely weekend trip or
the perfect stop when passing through. Red Post Café’s whitebait fritter is offered in a few ways for your choosing; in a sandwich of fresh German sourdough, as a meal with salad and fries or on its own in all its glory although always with a slice of lemon nearby. Café owner Trent Allison says the garden is very pleasant to sit in during this time of year. Enjoy a fritter and a glass of wine al fresco style in the beautiful garden, you can’t ask for much more than that. Add the café to your next day out. Indulge in classic Greek cuisine
Dining out should always be a memorable experience. Comfortable surroundings, real hospitality, good wine, cocktails and mouth-watering cuisine all combine at the Athens Yacht Club making it an enjoyable occasion. This is “The Athens Experience”.
I
ts specialty is Greek cuisine, offered with professional service and a family vibe. They have recently introduced a fresh, vibrant new spring/summer menu bringing the authentic flavours of Greece to a new level for central Christchurch. Owners Emilios and Rebecca Kotzikas offer comfort food that encapsulates the Greek way of life. “Real Greek food from the heart; it’s all about passionate chefs, quality ingredients and traditional recipes dating back hundreds of years,” says Emilios. “It is about culture, comfort, family and life itself. We bring you the total Greek experience with affordable quality, authenticity and hospitality being our
top priority.” Stepping through the club doors is becoming part of one big happy Greek family. Aside from the owners and the caring Athens staff, diners join this extended family, enjoying the atmosphere, the service and most of all the cuisine. Seduced by “Greek food fit for the gods”, and by generous portions, diners never leave unsatisfied or hungry. Head chef Lawrence Harvey (aka Loz) uses mainly local ingredients – fresh produce, top quality meat and sustainable seafood – to create culinary delights rivalling those found in the Mediterranean. To ensure authenticity, Emilios’ family
regularly help to “fine-tune” the flavours. Regulars will be familiar with the tried and true, but because a majority of the menu has now been changed, it’s time to sail on in and check it out. While maintaining Greek staples such as pasta, chicken, pork, lamb, steak and fish. Add to that new salads, fresh seasonal vegetables, beautiful presentation, and the result is next level cuisine with a stunning selection of dishes that stimulate the eyes and then the tastebuds. Open seven nights from 5pm until late, the restaurant also has a new array of beautiful desserts on offer. Bookings are essential so make yours today.

ith these things, we know what we’re getting. So, when a spanner is thrown in the works, like Covid-19 level changes, it throws us offbalance. The team at Ballantynes recognised the vacuum left for many regulars who could no longer visit the store, especially those who loved dining at Kin Bistro. They also realised the part that comfort food can play in difficult times and launched Your Weekend Off by Ballantynes Home Kitchen. The new weekly meal delivery service provides freshly-made meals, from locally-sourced ingredients,
with options for two to 10 guests. It’s delivered straight to your doorstep every Friday, just in time for the weekend. “Our chefs love bringing their favourite recipes to our customer’s homes,” says Ballantynes Hospitality Manager Helen Kraal. Early menu offerings have included Beef Carbonnade, Chicken Parmigiana, and there are meat-free alternatives. The balance between a trusted tradition and trying something new has been struck. he’s up pre-sparrow’s and working in the kitchen by 3:30am. “The first thing I do is make myself a coffee. Just
to make sure the machine is working correctly,” she laughs. Joanne and her early-bird staff at Gorgeous Food get stuck into baking, during what she calls the “golden hours”. The barista arrives at 5:30am ready to serve Vivace coffee with the warm-from-the-oven scones and pastries or freshcut sandwiches, when the shop opens at 6am. Catering for morning teas is a big focus at the start of the day. “And some bosses might decide to shout their staff breakfast. They’ll pick that up at 7am and take it into work.” Happy stomachs make happy staff. Joanne and her partner Pete have worked out a system around her early starts; he arrives later and does the clean-up at the end of the day. hampagne adds a sparkle to any occasion, including breakfast. Sitting on my coffee table is a large bowl of Champagne corks all dated at the time I shared them. Someone asked me which Champagne I like the most. My answer is simple, all of them. Champagne is a celebration, an occasion to be savoured. You pop that wonderful cork for a reason. A wedding, an anniversary, a Cup Day, a moment to be remembered. You can only call it Champagne if it comes from that specific region in France. Associated with royalty from the 1700s, it has become the epitome of celebratory wine, refined over the centuries from its original “super sweet pink slushy” phase to the bubbles we know and love today. Celebration and Champagne definitely go together.

home Make your home
feel bigger Following a few simple interior design rules can help you make your home feel larger, more spacious as well as look good. Here are some tips from Metropol. Use round pieces Using rounded edges makes your room seem less grid-like, and fools the eye into the illusion of a bigger, more dynamic space. Use metallics as accents As well as bouncing light, shiny metallic surfaces are interesting to the eye, adding an illusion of depth to any space. Blur boundaries using lamps Use lamps (lots of them) to light dark spots and corners. This will blur where your room begins and ends. Add mirrors Mirrors are an instant room enhancer. They bounce the light around your room and instantly expand horizons. Paint walls and ceiling the same colour Extending the colour gives the illusion of a bigger room. It’s harder for your eyes to see where your walls begin and end.

Renaissance of redesign This past decade has seen a seismic shift in people’s relationship with the environment. Sustainability is the future and when businesses embrace this, anything is possible.

nterior designer Shreeni de Silva heads a boutique furniture redesign studio that champions sustainable thought and practice. Established in 2013, D-Sign Studio is renowned for its handpicked, unique furniture, décor items and giftware. “Our overarching philosophy is that from each item salvaged and redesigned, one dollar is saved to plant a tree,” Shreeni explains. Shreeni works as an interior design consultant in both
residential and commercial design, and is well-known in real estate for her savvy designs from when the business ran a home-staging company. Apart from redesign, the studio also custom-designs for clientele, such as the reconfiguring of a cherished heirloom piece to fit in with the period of a home. Furniture painting workshops are regularly held onsite, and the NZ made Artisan premium chalk paints can be purchased for DIY projects.
Passionate about design, Shreeni’s eye for detail speaks for itself in her work. Shreeni loves meeting with clients to discuss all options

First Home
We are constantly reminded of the uphill nature of the challenges for first-home buyers. Browse any newspaper or Stuff headlines any weekend and you’ll be familiar with the narrative. I’ve just seen reports that first-home buyer interest in Christchurch property rose 18 per cent following the first week of our local lockdown (The Press, Sept 18, 2021). Deposits that can require years of saving, emptying out of KiwiSaver accounts and a real adjustment of what’s affordable versus what’s aspirational are a significant part of the story. That first home purchase is hard, it’s true, but it’s also extremely sweet and I was reminded of this recently when I witnessed young families walking together, children in tow, heading down to the local school. They were travelling along the street where I grew up and I use the word ‘travel’ figuratively because what occurred to me was that my own mum and dad had done just the same with us some 54 years prior. They were proud as punch that they had secured a home in the newly developed suburb of Bishopdale and only a mere 100 metres from Cotswold School, where I think we were founding students. It was a busy, bustling neighbourhood of working dads and mostly stay-at-home mums. Biscuit tins were full and Sunday was the family roast day. So many memories, and now I’m wondering, would these new families stay for long in the area, do they love the school, would their kids befriend all the locals as we did and play at the

nearby parks till almost dark?! I hope so. On a recent auction day, I watched young couples battle for the keys to new properties and I noticed two very significant things. The prices had gone up considerably since this time last year. Homes that once would have been up to the $550,000 mark were now due to auction touching $700,000 and in some cases more. I can’t help but wonder who can afford this. And secondly, parents, beautiful parents were standing by their children, helping them to achieve that Kiwi dream. Whilst I started this article with a nod to the past, I’d like to finish with a look at the future. Get on the property ladder if you can, create memories, make new friends, enrich your communities and then trust the property processes of pride of ownership and potential capital growth. Believe me when I say, I know it will be worthwhile.

Clearing the air
In these mask-wearing times, the quality of the air we breathe seems all the more important. Metropol’s gadget guru Ian Knott takes a look at how Dyson plans to ‘clear the air’ in your home.
H
aving spent a few weeks with the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde, my natural cynicism has turned to sheer wonder with this futuristic-looking unit surpassing all my expectations. I don’t live in a spotless home, we have animals, several animals, and with those animals comes animal smells. But the air filtering technology in the Dyson sucks in those impurities and spits
out heated or cooled odourfree air, distributing it around the room in an intelligent way that covers every corner. There is a noticable difference in the quality of the air in our home. But animal smells are nothing compared to the unseen nasties it picks up. Formaldehyde is listed as one of the top 10 poisons in the world, and you’d be surprised how much of it is in your home. The Dyson Purifier not only
filters out formaldehyde from the air, but actively destroys it. Not to mention pollens for the hayfever sufferers. The Dyson Link app lets you control the device remotely and gives you a detailed analysis of the air quality in your home. One surprise bonus was a considerably lower power bill from using the Dyson instead of our usual heatpump. I call that a win-win!
Pros: You will notice a better air quality Get peace of mind knowing what’s being filtered out of your home Extremely easy to set up and use
Cons: At around $1000, it’s a top-end gadget. But with potential power savings and better health, it’s well worth it.

Sustainable Gardening WORDS CHERYL COLLEY
Gardening sustainably just makes sense in this fragile world of climate change and environmental damage.
A
ctually doing it in your own backyard does take a little effort, but more and more New Zealand gardeners are finding that every step is worth it to create a garden that not only looks after your plants and you, but also helps the whole planet. Simply put,
a sustainable garden works in harmony with nature. There are many sustainable techniques and practices that can improve the health and the output of your garden. Here are some ways to move to that more sustainable garden.
Soil fertility
Seed/plant selection and placement
• Regularly dig over soil and assess soil type and quality. • Always use fertilisers at correct times and applications to reduce waste. Think very carefully before you reach for the bug spray or synthetic fertiliser. So many good, sustainable alternatives exist. • Maintain soil fertility with organic ‘green manure’ or cover crops. • Use mulch. It can prevent up to 75% of evaporation loss, prevents run off and keeps the soil cool.
• Save seeds and winter roots to reduce money spent on new purchases. • Ask for drought tolerant species at garden centres before selecting plants, trees and shrubs. • Investigate ‘companion planting’ to encourage pollinator insects. A combination of edible and ornamental plants will result in the garden looking more colourful and interesting. • Help stop the spread of environmental weeds. Find out what plants have become weeds in your area and if you have them, or they pop up, get rid of them safely.
Compost and recycling • Establish a compost bin or worm farm. • Retain food scraps and lawn clippings for the compost. • Apply compost to all garden beds to increase moisture holding capacity, particularly in sandy soils. • Shred woody material to use as mulch.
Edible gardening • Continuously plant a small amount of in-season crops for a year-round supply. • Bottle/dry/preserve or freeze any surplus crop for use in the offseason. • Be vigilant in observing plants so they are harvested on time to reduce waste.
Water use • Use ‘grey water’ to water shrubs • Water plants deeply and less often. This encourages deep root growth and a more robust constitution.
So build your garden for the future not for fashion. Make your garden climate-friendly and water- wise. Metropol 14 October, 2021 89
gardening
Think Big Trees are nature’s eye candy, and there’s nothing like mature trees to add impact in a garden.
Clean air
With a bigger tree, you can expect cleaner air. Trees use light energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen. They also clean carbon dioxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide from the air.
E
ven if you’re building new and starting your landscaping from scratch, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t include a few mature specimens to make it look more established. They’re big, elegant, and beautiful and they bring those same attributes to the garden.
Less noise
Larger trees filter out noise such as loud neighbours and constant traffic. The layers of branches and foliage work as a barrier that sifts the sound waves apart, making them less audible. They’re also good for climbing and playing in.
Not only do they look good, there are numerous environmental benefits to planting trees of any size. Of course, the bigger the tree the bigger the benefits. Many tree nurseries have a selection of larger trees ready to plant, and some nurseries specialise in only large tree specimens.
Privacy barrier
Trees will help turn your garden into a sheltered oasis, safe from outside prying eyes, in addition to providing shade in summer, blocking out harmful UV rays, and help to create good habitats for flora and fauna.

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has led the demolition and clearance programme since December 2015 when it inherited responsibility from the Canterbury Earthquake
Recovery Authority. “The scale and complexity of this work is unlike anything else in New Zealand, and reaching the end of the programme marks a significant milestone in the regeneration of greater Christchurch,” says Matt Bradley, LINZ Manager of Project and Hazard Management Delivery. Many of the most complex demolitions were completed in the Port Hills where properties often teetered near cliff edges or were on steep sections, requiring innovative leading-edge clearance techniques. The final demolition was a large house constructed of
concrete and polystyrene, perched above Governors Bay on Banks Peninsula. About 225 cubic metres of the property’s concrete waste – the equivalent of three 40-foot shipping containers – is being diverted from landfill for roading fill and other uses. Wooden floorboards are being chipped and donated to the community for such things as gardening. Mr Bradley says about 70 percent of the building’s demolition waste is being recycled. The demolition started in July and is expected to be complete by the end of October.

Fun in the sun – with a jab
Helping business boom
I love spring, with all the promise of warm sunny days, catching up with friends and whānau – not to mention lazy days watching the cricket! But this year, Covid-19 has thrown a spanner in the works and as I write, we are stuck in a lingering level 2 limbo.
Every business should have a mentor. Operating a business is no easy task, let alone doing it through a pandemic. Having an experienced, independent mentor to listen and guide you through some of the challenges can make all the difference.
The fast-moving Delta strain has been one step ahead of our lockdowns, contact tracing, and social restrictions. That’s where vaccines come in. Instead of chasing elimination, the more effective long-term solution is a highly vaccinated population. Vaccinations have been shown to be effective, such as in the United Kingdom where case numbers, hospitalisations and deaths are down. The overseas outbreaks are proof the virus will be difficult to eliminate entirely, and there will always be a risk of Covid.
Much of the global population is expected to catch the virus multiple times over their lifetimes, however after most of us are vaccinated, it will become another virus that we will learn to manage – just as we do with influenza. We all have a role to play in getting vaccinated and supporting others to do so too. My challenge to all of you is to work together to ensure that Canterbury has the highest and most equitably vaccinated population in Aotearoa New Zealand. Come on Red and Black – let’s get the vax!

Mentors provide confidential, one-on-one assistance for small business owners, who are trading, want to grow or need help to solve a specific challenge. Mentors can also help to reduce the stress and loneliness faced by many business leaders. Business Mentors New Zealand operates out of ChristchurchNZ and is an integral part of the Regional Business Partners Programme, connecting businesses with the right advice, people and resources. Support is given to all businesses, across all sectors and all stages, including specific advice tailored to Māori businesses and it’s been great to see growth in the
number of start-ups from Ngāi Tahu in recent years. Canterbury’s volunteer mentors support a range of businesses including start-ups, small to medium businesses with less than 20 staff, not for profits and social enterprises. These heroes spend many hours guiding, supporting their mentees and willingly sharing their expertise. We are passionate about helping business and notfor-profits to survive and thrive, and the mentoring network is at the very heart of this. If you think a mentor would help you, or if you are keen to be a mentor, please talk to our team or visit businessmentors.org.nz.

Central city development
A blooming good idea
We’ve seen a significant surge in demand for apartment-style living in central Christchurch over the past year. Covid, Christchurch’s comparative affordability and the everincreasing vibrancy of the central city are all influencing the desires of home buyers.
I always think it creates a sense of wellbeing when spring is in the air and the cherry blossoms and kowhai are flowering. When I read the spring flowers story on the ChristchurchNZ website and discovered that ‘Hanami’ is a Japanese word that translates to ‘flower watching’, I realised how universal that experience is.
To help the city meet this demand and get more people living centrally as soon as possible, we’re putting two large blocks of land on Manchester Street up for sale and want to hear from developers who can deliver higher-density housing. These land parcels sit alongside Fletcher Living’s One Central development, where 250 homes have now been sold, some before construction has even been finished. With no end to the demand in sight, Fletcher Living expects to begin building the next tranche of 101 homes soon.
So, with the city literally blooming, how about treating yourself to a ‘staycation’. I have friends who book themselves into a boutique hotel for the weekend and explore the city as visitors would. They tell me it is very refreshing, and it’s good for local businesses too. The Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū had to cancel the opening nights of a couple of great exhibitions, however they are very much open, and they are well worth seeing. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of Flying Nun Records in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Hellzapoppin’! brings together original
By opening up the land parcels between Lichfield and Cashel Streets, and Hereford and Worcester Streets for other developers to deliver apartments we hope to speed up the arrival of more homes and more residents in the central city, which will be a shot in the arm for the local economy. If successful, we also have the option of taking a third block of land to the market. So, the opportunity to deliver homes on this scale so close to the heart of one of New Zealand’s major centres is unlikely to be seen again.
artwork and design, film, record covers, posters and photography from some of New Zealand’s favourite bands. And there are two monumental contemporary ngatu tā’uli (blackened tapa) by local Tongan artist Kulimoe’anga Stone Maka. The stories of two queens – Queen Sālote and Queen Elizabeth II – come to life in the context of a migration story. There are usually volunteer guides, who help bring these and other stories to life. Sadly, however they are on hold until we are back to Level 1, which can’t come soon enough.

Christchurch has lost many of its iconic heritage buildings through earthquake damage, so it is particularly special to learn of one that is to be repaired and restored.
T
he building in question is the old municipal chambers on the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Oxford Terrace, one of Christchurch’s oldest public
buildings. Built-in 1887 in the Queen Anne style, it is the only remaining building of its type in the city and has a Category-1 listing with Heritage New Zealand.
T&A Construction in association with Box 112, has breathed new life back into a number of Christchurch’s treasured heritage buildings over the past few years, including the old Midland Club building (now home to Miro Cafe), the Public Trust offices at 152 Oxford Terrace and several buildings in and around Welles St. “Our next project is work on the former Municipal Electricity Department building on Armagh St. Built in 1933, this building is listed as a significant building in the Christchurch District Plan. It is fantastic to know we have played a very significant part in restoring all these buildings to their former glory.” www.tanda.nz Metropol 14 October, 2021 97

Restoring history
Development company Box 112, has leased the building from the City Council for the future. The restoration and strengthening, to which Christchurch ratepayers have contributed $10 million, is programmed to take two years. Responsibility for the work itself rests with Christchurch-based construction company T&A Construction, specialists in the structural strengthening, repair, and restoration of heritage buildings. Aaron Walker of T&A Construction says his company is excited to be involved with this high-profile project. “We spent quite a long time giving consultative assistance around the buildability, cost, and overall feasibility of the project. Now it is very satisfying to have actually started on the restoration work itself.” Most of T&A Construction’s work is happening outside the public’s gaze as Aaron’s team has sheathed the entire building in white plastic to protect it against the elements and to allow work to continue regardless of the weather. “We are strengthening the chambers from the inside out, and the external steel framing that has been propping the building up since the earthquakes will be one of the last things to be removed. There are also lots of beautiful decorative features in the chambers that we will carefully remove, restore and then reinstate as part of the restoration.”

Time for a spring upgrade
Spring cleaning can mean many different things. For some people, it really is as simple as cleaning surfaces in a house or garage that has been neglected for months. For other people, the word ‘spring’ signals something new.
P
erhaps that something new might be the renewal of a tired-looking bathroom, laundry, or kitchen. It’s amazing what a difference merely installing a new toilet can make. They do tend to have a use-by date. What is the water pressure like in your shower? “Terrible – it just dribbles”, you might reply. Maxwell Plumbing can offer everything from installing that new toilet, or upgrading your hot water system to a complete renovation service from design to completion. The company can also provide the right builder, electrician, tiler, or painter for the job. There is no need for a client to haggle with various tradesmen. Maxwell Plumbing will coordinate the work so it is carried out systematically, reducing the time the work takes to complete. “One quote and one bill make the job simple and efficient. We are a one-stop-shop to take the stress out of your renovations.” www.maxwellplumbing.co.nz

Site-specific build specialists At Blair Ward Construction, they enjoy the flow of the construction process, the communication, and the collaboration that comes with building architecturally designed homes.
lair from Blair Ward Construction was living and loving life on the hills above Sumner when a vacant section came up for sale next door. He could see this land had potential with its breathtaking views of Redcliffs and Brighton and sheltered microclimate. The site was steep and challenging. All it needed was the right builder and architect to create something special. Blair reached out to Yardley Architecture to design a modern architectural, functional family home. Together they worked to find site-specific solutions to get the most from the section and make every dollar count. They were at the foundation stage when the house found its enthusiastic new owners. This provided the opportunity for everyone to work together to put the final touches on the home. “Blair has been wonderful to work with and his valued advice on materials and fit out throughout the project has been appreciated. His attention to detail in every respect has been outstanding as has his workmanship,” say the owners. For your dedicated building partner, call Blair on 021 929 489. www.bwconstruction.co.nz

ot only will it add value to the home, it will also provide more space, more entertaining opportunities and an area for adults or children to hang out without the others. A conservatory can work as a dining room, a play room, or just a sit-in-the-sun room. Costs vary, depending on the materials used and the size, ranging from $6000 to $10,000 or as high as $80,000. On average, the cost is around $30,000. Other factors that will affect the cost, especially in Canterbury, are the building regulations. Due to the earthquakes, it is a Christchurch City Council requirement to obtain a soil test [engineers report] on all consented conservatories. Once plans have been drawn up, and council consent obtained usually within four to six weeks, your new conservatory can be built in as little as three weeks. Of course, for a fee, companies that specialise in conservatories can take all the planning and consents hassle off your hands, as well as helping to design and then build your dream space.

Get set for pre-Christmas events at the new Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
O
riginally the first events were to have been held there this month, but thanks to the latest Covid-19 disruptions, the convention centre is now aiming to hold its first events in the lead-up to Christmas. Many of the specialists necessary to complete the facility have been unable to travel down from the North Island. “At least 30 experts in areas such as fire systems management and other aspects of commissioning and compliance for a venue of this scale are based in Auckland and Wellington,” says Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive, John Bridgman. “It’s understandable these people won’t be able to travel outside their regions for some time. “With all the unknowns, we can’t yet provide a firm opening date but we are aiming to provide event organisers with as much clarity as is possible at the moment. “We’re unlikely to be able to host the most
complex events such as big conferences and exhibitions this year but we are optimistic of holding meetings and banquets before Christmas,” says Bridgman. “We really feel for everyone who continues to be impacted by Covid-19. It’s been a tough year and we are really hoping to end it on a positive note by hosting some festive season events at our impressive new venue.” He says it’s important to remember that Te Pae Christchurch is being built for the longterm benefit of the city and the region. “While we are very keen to get the doors open as soon as possible, this will be a key city asset for decades to come. Even allowing for Covid-19, it’s likely to provide about $600m of direct economic benefit in the next 10 years. Te Pae Christchurch General Manager Ross Steele says the convention centre team is working with affected clients to find the best solution to host their events. “We also have around 90 further confirmed events which we look forward to hosting as we open Te Pae Christchurch for the benefit of the region,” he says.

HARD vs SOFT No build - home, bach or business - is complete without landscaping and much like the style of the building, options are endless.
C
lean lines, low maintenance and easy care or mowing lawns, weeding flower beds and pruning shrubs? That is the question. The reality is there’s no simple answer; it’s all about personal preference and needs. More homeowners are opting for hard landscaping, while others still prefer the traditional soft option and yet some choose a mix of the two. The difference between the types of landscaping is reflected in the descriptions. Hard landscaping consists of the hard things you will have in your garden, such as bricks, concrete, stone, gravel etc. Soft landscaping is the soft or living element of your garden, such as flowers, shrubs, grass, trees, soil, and anything growing in general. Both soft landscaping and hard landscaping are considered important in good landscape design and the best time to sort this aspect is when you start building. In addition to material and general building costs, most build companies recommend allowing 10 percent of the value of the build for landscaping. The same applies to landscaping remodelling.

Hard landscaping This comprises the large pieces of hard materials that shape a landscape structure. Materials such as stone, wood, concrete, paving and masonry are used to create a sense of space when landscaping. Aesthetically, hard landscaping enables the outdoor space to complement the look of a building. It helps solve practical problems such as drainage, but is usually more expensive so it is important to get the design right as it is difficult to change once executed.
Soft landscaping
Costings
This is all about the living part of your landscape design. The lawns, plants, trees, shrubs and flowers are all components of soft landscaping. Often, it is inseparable from hard landscaping; for example, the materials needed to create a pond in a business garden are hard landscaping elements, but the pond itself is a soft landscaping element. Soft landscaping elements do need ongoing maintenance to look their best.
Landscape design costs vary depending on factors such as area size, how detailed the plan is, whether a planting plan is required, and if fencing is to be included. Typically, plans start from a few hundred dollars and cap off at a couple of thousand. Actual landscaping costs vary depending on the size of the job and how many landscapers it requires. Starting from scratch, most homeowners will spend between $3000 and $15,950 for landscaping.

rebbleton Village Square has over 2000m2 of tenancy space and features a unique design with car parking on the outside of the development, resulting in a family-friendly open square space complemented by retail shopping, cafes, a gym, cinema and a community health centre, Prebbleton Health. Existing old buildings not in use were cleared from the site earlier this year. “It’s fair to say we’re excited to see some activity and work on the site,” spokesperson for the development Shannon Gilmore said. “The geotech testing is needed to make sure the ground can support our proposed buildings and to ensure no geotechnical hazards could occur. The report will also provide any recommendations for any foundation design we might need; it’s an important milestone as we move ahead with our plans.” The Prebbleton Village Square development is being done by the Gilmore family, which has owned the tavern for more than 50 years. “It’s so good things are starting to take shape,” Gilmore said.
