As this issue’s front cover proclaims loud and clear, the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix is coming to Lyttelton. What that means is a chance for Kiwis to see this adrenalinepumping water sport up close and personal, and also to

showcase Christchurch to the rest of the world.
Seaside spectator tickets to view the racing on Lyttelton Harbour sold out preChristmas. However, those who missed out can still be part of the live action, via a special fan base in the central city, while enjoying its hospitality. Don’t forget big screens can often show more close-up action than actually being there.
It is coming, so save the date, 18 and 19 March.
Throughout history there are certain happenings worthy of mention for future prosperity. SailGP is one of them, and hopefully the inaugural Lyttelton series is just the beginning for this event.

Another noteworthy (now historic) event is the sudden resignation of our former Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. While politically polarising, Jacinda brought New Zealand into the world spotlight for many good reasons.
Love her or not, the fact is that Jacinda is highly regarded in many international political arenas, and notched up several “firsts”. Politics is often a thankless task, and many former politicians will empathise with her “getting out”. There is life after politics.
Speaking of getting out, it is time for Cantabrians to start planning to get out and catch some action on the waves at Lyttelton next month.

Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour will come to life with the inaugural ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Christchurcha two day spectacle of thrilling racing, intense rivalries and boat-on-boat action just metres from the shoreline.
Thousands will experience the action, watch the drama, and be part of SailGP’s long-awaited New Zealand debut, taking place in front of sold-out crowds at Lyttelton’s newly transformed Naval Point.
If you’ve managed to secure tickets to the event, the best way to get to Lyttelton will be via o cial event shuttles, built into the ticket cost. Buses will leave from, and return to, Te Pae on both race days. Road closures will be in place from noon to 6PM each day and there will be no public parking in Lyttelton, so patrons are encouraged to plan ahead, get to the shuttles early and take advantage of this free service.
The inaugural New Zealand Sail Grand Prix, SailGP has formed a strong multi-year, national partnership with iconic Kiwi brand ITM.
The building supply company is the Title Partner of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Christchurch, as well as the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland in 2024.
Well-known in the Kiwi sporting circuit, ITM joins a suite of established partners behind both events, demonstrating the commercial growth of SailGP in New Zealand and around the world, and the pinnacle status of the event itself –already a sell-out success in its first-ever iteration.
Karl Budge, chief commercial o cer and head of the New Zealand event says they’re delighted to make their New Zealand debut on Whakaraupō, Lyttelton Harbour in March, and grateful for the support of ITM over upcoming seasons.
The 10th event on the Season 3 calendar, Christchurch is the last stop before the Season Grand Finale in San Francisco.
New Zealand defied the odds, bouncing back from a penalty, to win the Singapore Sail Grand Prix last month, and is now heading for Sydney Harbour for more racing in February.
In just a few short weeks, racing fans will be able to catch Peter Burling, Blair Tuke and their New Zealand SailGP Team as they show o this new format of live action sailing for the first time in New Zealand.

All roads lead to Lyttelton for the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix, which, at the time of publishing, is just six weeks away.
Lyttelton was close to the epicenter of the devastating earthquake on 22 February 2011, but it’s now bouncing back and moving forward.
Lyttelton is a picturesque town located on the side of an extinct volcano in the Banks Peninsula. With the upcoming ITM New Zealand SailGP event taking place in Lyttelton on 18-19 March, the town is gearing up for an influx of tourists. Unsurprisingly, as one of the most popular activities in Lyttelton is taking a walk along the town’s waterfront, which o ers beautiful views of the harbour where you can also see the various ships and boats that call the port home.

Veteran Christchurch rally driver Trevor Crowe is a motorsport legend. Metropol catches up with him about the recent launch of his book, As The Crowe Flies.
For many, Trevor Crowe (pictured) is best known for his motorracing exploits, yet he is a competitor in every sense, far beyond the race track. From running marathons, tackling the Coast to Coast, and even risking life and limb in the notorious Maraton Nautico del Rio Balsas Mexican powerboat race, his story is an inspirational one.
Following all his childhood escapades growing up in a workingclass Christchurch neighbourhood, to his formative years, and his long list of successes, As The Crowe Flies by author Steve Holmes, tells the story of Trevor’s life and exploits.
A local hero, creative, determined, competitive and courageous are all words used to describe him. Add in a disciplined work ethic, instilled by working with his father in the family garage at Waltham, and you have some insight into what shaped him.
“Growing up, I read all the hero stories I could lay my hands on,” he explains. “I loved them, and what they achieved in many di erent fields.”
The adventures of others set the scene for his own undertakings. With the “want wheels you work for it and save for it” advice from his father ringing in his ears, young Trevor followed his dreams from the age of seven.
Seventy years later that same steely determination still drives him to break new boundaries. “Looking back just gives you a sore neck,” he says.
“Everything, and I mean everything, is about going forward.”
Trevor knows how to drive a car fast no problem, but building the perfect competition car is a never-ending challenge for him. He’s always thinking, always prepared to go back to the drawing board, always an open mind to new ideas and concepts.
From a 1932 MG J2 through to the highest level of international competition car, Trevor has done it all, building at least 20 of them himself.
Some of his creations have been “downright scary’. “They were all well thought out, and engineered, but the biggest engine in the smallest cars... that required a skilful pilot,” he laughs.
Along the way, Trevor mastered the ability to build and motivate a great team, in business and in his many sporting adventures. “It’s simple principles, such as sharing knowledge, building talent, celebrating success, courage, fitness, and attitude,” he says.
“In a team, everyone has a voice, and is open to feedback, learning and moving forward are the key to success.”
Recent years have seen Trevor facing a few medical (and life-threatening) challenges. In his characteristic determined way, and with the same “bloody mindedness wrapped in courage” he always displays (according to partner Colleen), he’s dealt with them.
Once one car had served its purpose it was sacrificed to provide the funds for the next exciting project already ruminating in Trevor’s brain. Motorsports are just part of his achievements, which include building and running successful businesses, Coast to Coast competition, international marathons, Mexican jet boat odysseys, and a Himalayan adventure, riding his motorcycle over the highest road in the world. Having a quiet lie-in is not something in his repertoire.
“He’s always asking questions and continually seeking a practical solution,” Colleen says. This approach has served him well, and still today he is building new race cars, competing in high profile events, as well as following a strict health and fitness regime.
He’s still flying high.
“Looking back just gives you a sore neck. Everything, and I mean everything, is about going forward.”
Angus “Gus” Leen, a young entrepreneur and industrial designer, and Deborah Still, an interior designer and business owner of 39 years, have found solace in each other’s company, and a shared appreciation for design.
“I was judging a book by its cover and thought, Oh – I haven’t got it in me to talk to this young lad that I don’t know when I’m feeling so heartbroken – just my luck!”
Deborah recalls, “I don’t remember how the conversation started out. But suddenly, we were looking at Instagram because I told Gus I was a designer, and he was chatting about design. Then the whole evening just flew by, us sharing pictures on our phones and talking all night.”
It was unexpected, Gus adds. “We’ve talked about it since and thought it must have been Barrie who sat us together at his funeral as a way to help us through since his passing.”
Despite their initial reservations about talking to someone they didn’t know at such a di cult time, Gus and Deborah found that they had a true connection through their shared fascination for design inspired by nature.
Gus admits how surprised he was that they have so much in common considering the 38 year age gap.
He describes how he found a great mentor that evening.
“At the funeral, I remember sharing
with Deborah about how I wasn’t enjoying my first year in university.”
To o er Gus some new inspiration, Deborah introduced him to her business friends at ‘Tréology’ in Christchurch.
Tréology makes beautiful bespoke furniture from Kauri found in river beds.
Gus came away feeling incredibly motivated.
The unlikely duo soon found they were meeting regularly, and realised the potential for professional collaboration. They have since worked on many projects together, and have discovered a natural synergy and ease in their workflow.
“I don’t look at gender, sexuality, or age; it’s actually completely irrelevant. Those things don’t change who a person is.”
Deborah shared that she is thoroughly enjoying watching a young New Zealand designer’s journey.
“I really admire Gus’s dedication to quality and eye for detail, and that he’s pushing the boundaries. Like that Newcastle design he’s doing right now, it’s so di erent.”
Bringing a fresh perspective and honest feedback to the table helps them both in their design work.
“Deborah never creates two designs that look the same, and they are always unique to the customer,” explains Gus.
“There are so many people that you find that are just focused on what’s trending, which is beautiful, but they’re
not focusing on actually what matters for the customer.
“She takes inspiration from the surrounding landscape of the interior she’s working on.
‘When I walk into a space that Deborah has created, I can see where she pulled her colours and forms from in the natural features that encompass the home,” he adds.
Deborah’s clients work with her because they trust her design, she says.
“They know I’ll sell them something they’ll love for a long time, which is why I love to tell Gus’s story.”
Gus makes beautiful, fine quality lighting and furniture pieces from sustainably sourced materials at his workshop in Timaru.
Despite their di erence in age, it doesn’t get in the way of their friendship.
“I don’t actually ever think of Gus as older or younger than me. But, I don’t think of anyone that I care about as anything other than the actual essence of who the person is. I don’t look at gender, sexuality, or age; it’s actually completely irrelevant. Those things don’t change who a person is,” says Deborah.
“Deborah and I can talk for hours and lose track of time” Gus adds, “We get music on and talk over a few gins, the conversation always comes back to design, and it’s so inspiring.”
Their unlikely friendship serves as a reminder that age is just a number and that sometimes, the most unexpected connections can lead to the most rewarding collaborations.

Tuesday 14 February marks
St Valentine’s Day, which for many is a chance to show their significant other, or their secret muse, just how much they care.
From classic o erings such as red roses and chocolates, to an intimate dinner for two, there is no end to how you can celebrate. Here are some swoon-worthy Valentine’s Day date ideas from Metropol:
STARGAZE WITH YOUR SWEETHEART
Pack a cosy blanket and head to a secluded spot for a romantic night of stargazing. Take along a selection of snacks and use a stargazing app to identify constellations.
CREATE SOMETHING TOGETHER
You can buy a DIY air dry clay kit, bake something special, or try your hand at mixology to re-create your favourite cocktail. You can also book in for ‘paint with a glass of wine art classes’ on 14 February.
Enjoy quality time together and a bit of friendly competition with a classic twoplayer game, such as chess, Jenga, or Scrabble, or splurge on a couple-themed game, which often improves communication and prompts couples to reflect on their relationship.
Show your love and appreciation by writing a heartfelt letter to your partner, whether it’s an e-letter filled with gifs and videos, or a decorated scrapbook spread filled with mementos from your time together.
REVISIT A SPECIAL PLACE
Take a trip down memory lane by visiting a location that holds special significance in your relationship, such as your first date or engagement spot.
ENJOY CHRISTCHURCH CITY TOGETHER
Wander through the Botanical Garden and into the city centre to see what sparks your interest, whether it’s grabbing a delicious cocktail (or two) and tasty tapas, or setting up a picnic, the city central has so much choice.
Not everyone will be in a relationship on Valentine’s Day. Celebrate self-care or gather with friends for an “anti-Valentine’s Day” party to celebrate friendships and heal from past heartbreaks. Don’t forget to write Valentine’s Day cards and bake some delicious heart-shaped sugar cookies with pink icing.
Readers will be transported through the streets of Opawa, Woolston, Cashmere and Merivale, as she cleverly uses the Garden City as the backdrop to her storyline. Robyn explains:
“The heroine, Jamie, embarks on a horrifying experience, when she and her friends visit a house that contains narcotics ready to be on-sold to a crime boss. With teenage pressures placing them in an unpredictable situation, against all odds, they choose to deal with it.
“When home owner Nigel arrives, he realises his son Jack, and school friends, are waiting for him in the drug storage room. Drug dealing Nigel, recently out of prison, loses his temper, and takes his anger out on his partner Tessa. Jack intervenes, but he and Tessa are injured in the fallout.
“Nigel races o to hide the drugs, meanwhile Jamie is kidnapped by the crime boss, determined to recover his hidden merchandise.
“The police become involved, and an investigation starts to locate the missing drugs, and discover why Jamie was taken captive.
“This is the story of four sensible teenagers, all di erent in their upbringing, who, with police help, follow the clues, and work out a plan that defies all odds.
“Both young adults and adults would enjoy this thrilling, easy read.”

The Māori people have long understood the healing power and have used it for many years as an anti-inflammatory agent. Most Kiwis also love a good co ee – so why not combine the two? The average cost of building a home in New Zealand’s main centres increased by 11.3 percent last year, but the good news is that the rising cost of construction appears to be slowing down.
Industry watchdog QV CostBuilder’s December price update analysed more than 51,500 rates to reach the latest increase in the cost to build a standard three-bedroom home.
This compares with a 20.9 percent annual increase in its May 2022 update.
Spokesperson and quantity surveyor, Martin Bisset says it appears that construction costs may finally be levelling o now, although at double-digit growth
over the past year, there’s a long way to go to pre-pandemic prices.
The biggest elemental price increases since the May update related to framing, which went up 9.5 percent due to the increasing cost of precast concrete, reinforcing and structural steel. Costs related to exterior walls and exterior finish went up 7.7 percent, and the cost of upper floors and stairs and balustrades went up 7.4 and 6 percent respectively.
How are forward bookings and existing contracts handled in a sales process?
It is exciting for a Purchaser to have forward bookings or existing contracts when they purchase a business – these provide confidence in the business.
Often an Agreement for the Sale & Purchase of a Business will have a clause of acceptance by a Purchaser undertaking that they will honour all forward bookings and existing contracts included with the business, providing that they can be provided profitably. There is no advantage to a Purchaser if the goods or services can’t be provided at a profit for them.
With forward bookings, any deposits received by the Vendor for these will be passed on to the Purchaser to enable the goods or services to be provided.
Existing contracts (often with suppliers to the business) will need to be renewed with the Purchaser (who should ensure that the terms and conditions remain the same as those enjoyed by the Vendor). These matters are normally dealt with quite smoothly at sale time and should not cause disruption to the process.
QV CostBuilder is a subscription-based building cost platform, powered by stateowned enterprise Quotable Value, with a database of more than 60,000 rates across six regions of New Zealand, including Christchurch. It covers everything from the building costs per square metre for banks, schools, and o ce buildings, to the approximate cost per sheet of GIB and more than 8000 other items, plus labour rates, labour constants, and more.

If we make one New Year’s resolution, let it be to listen to people who know what they’re talking about and whose vast financial knowledge easily dispels much of the doom merchants’ predictions. People such as Alistair Bean (pictured) of Alistair Bean and AssociatesFinancial Advisers, whose 42 years working in finances – 32 years with ANZ and 10 years heading his own financial advisory service - underscores his astuteness on all matters financial. “We have seen a lot of bad news from politicians and the media lately – but there’s far more good news out there than they would have you believe.”
While acknowledging times have been tough for many the world over, Alistair says there are positive things happening that we should be aware of. “People can be far more positive than they are. Borders are open, shipping and trade is greatly
improving, tourism is thriving, and global employment is at record levels.” “There will be pain with fixed mortgage rates going onto new fixed mortgage rates but that may not last for long. There’s a bit of crystal ball gazing happening out there, but when interest/inflation rates go down, and they will, that can only lead to good outcomes.”
“Having funds sitting on the side-lines in term deposits while all this occurs is likely a much bigger risk by not participating in all that recovery. Money still makes money over time.”
Regarding oil costs, Alistair says the price of oil went from $125 per barrel to just over $80 per barrel.
“With the government assistance of 25 percent coming o that price at end of January, it may not be as bad if the price comes down.”
Comparing where we are today with where we were 50 years ago, Alistair believes we are in a far better place.
“If you look at the World Poverty Clock, in the 1970s, 30 percent of people were living in extreme poverty; now that percentage has dropped to 7.7 percentwhich is a huge improvement.”
“Things are getting better, especially with those macro things that politicians tend to forget about,” Alistair says.
His role in his financial company is to chat with clients and put their minds at ease, and to help them think about the medium to long term as well. “Because we’re all living longer, less of us retire at 65. We’re still working, and earning money, and are probably the wealthiest and healthiest we’ve ever been.”
On 21 February 2023, Alistair Bean & Associates celebrates its 10th anniversary, an major achievement to be rightly proud of.
For many people, 2022 was a year of mainly bad news. Covid-19 aside, we had enough doom and gloom forecasts to last us a lifetime, especially in matters fiscal.
“We have seen a lot of bad news from politicians and the media lately but there’s far more good news out there than they would have you believe.”
So too is making a connection, bringing people and property together for a desired outcome.
That’s where Christchurch realtor Anthony Deyn excels. An agent at Harcourts Gold Papanui, his goal this year is to connect with more people, face-to-face, one-on-one.
Making connections is something he excels at, given his previous career steps, attending London’s Covent Garden ballet school, performing in Westend productions, and working as a yoga teacher. “You can join me at Les Mills and Flow Yoga each week.”
For Anthony, making the right connection is hugely important.
“The real estate industry is all about connecting people with property. About sticking with marketing and formulas that are tried and true, and about communicating exactly what you want, and what I can do for you,” he says. Anthony’s business philosophy is to ‘list it, launch it, market it, sell it’, a creed that has to date earned him numerous industry accolades in just two-and-a-half years. Consistently in the top 20 agents for Harcourts Gold, he’s won the company’s Platinum Award for outstanding performance, the Rookie Award, Rising Star Award in Canterbury, made the top 10 agents, and is in the top 30 agents throughout Canterbury. He loves what he does, chasing his and other people’s property dreams. “Personally, I’m just settling on an investment property and it’s so exciting.
I want others to feel the same excitement. Anyone thinking of buying or selling needs to meet with me. I understand the power of marketing for delivering results.
“Let’s chat, face-to-face. Email me at anthony.deyn@harcourtsgold.co.nz.”

Communication is one of life’s essentials, and hugely important when buying or selling property.
Depending on your job, there are some specific items that can help during your day.
If you work in construction, your essentials would include a hard hat, and steel-toed boots, along with sunscreen and sunglasses. If you work in a hospital, you’d look to good quality, comfortable footwear, and an accurate time-keeping device. When it comes to o ce work, here are three key items to invest in:
1. INSULATED WATER BOTTLE
You’ll want a sturdy and leak-proof water bottle to ensure you stay hydrated. Opt for a one litre bottle to avoid multiple trips to top up. Yes, at the beginning you may visit the bathroom more often, but your body will become used to the
increased water intake, and the benefits will be worth it.
2. PLANNER
Sometimes there just isn’t enough time in a day. With physical or digital planner, you can at least assign time blocks to make sure the important stu gets done. A planner is also a good way to balance out work and leisure.
3. TOTE BAG
To ensure you save money by bringing lunch to work, and to bring the mammoth drink bottle mentioned prior, invest in a spacious work bag to match your personal style. A leather look always exudes class, if that’s what you are going for, otherwise there are numerous other styles and colours out there.

Uneven skin tone is characterised by both skin discoloration and a change in skin texture, caused in turn by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair colour. All skin types—dry, oily, and combination—can have uneven skin tone.
Acne, sunspots, hyperpigmentation, under-eye bags, red spots due to damaged blood vessels, and rosacea are all types of uneven skin tone.
They may be caused by hormonal changes, aging, genetics, drinking alcohol and eating spicy foods, lack of sleep, chronic sun exposure, and even air pollution.
To treat uneven skin tone:
1. ALWAYS USE A BROAD SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN that protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays.
2. MAKE SURE TO REGULARLY EXFOLIATE YOUR SKIN and polish it with suitable skin care products.
3. USE A BRIGHTENING FACE SERUM, packed with high concentrations of beneficial ingredients.
Few pleasures eclipse basking in the sun and feeling its warm glow on our skin, however if not treated with the utmost care beforehand, uneven skin tone may result.
In the world of dentistry and dental aesthetics, there are many skills, techniques, and materials that involve both the patient and the technician.
Fulfilling a dream of beautiful and equally functional teeth isn’t just about doing the job. It’s rather a matter of living a vision of restoring values to life.
Dental aesthetics is more than making teeth. It’s about re-establishing shapes, colours, traits that once were part of a person’s identity, meaning bringing back integrity and self-esteem by taking into consideration not only the shape of a tooth but also skin, age, temper, hair and other characteristics of the patient.

With the world becoming aware of sustainability and climate change, an Auckland skincare company has added a kawakawa range to reduce its carbon footprint.
Honest Skincare company chief executive Janna Jansen has also added a range of raw ingredients such as New Zealand beeswax and flax seed oil to the company line-up.
Māori especially value kawakawa leaves as a traditional health solvent to treat wounds, bruises, and skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis, while the bitter root extract provided medicine for digestive and urinary complaints.
The leaves contain myristicin, which is mildly antiseptic and has pain numbing properties, and so was widely used in the past by Māori to allay toothache, Jansen says.
“We follow rongoā Māori practices when picking it, and only take a little from each plant so that it is not adversely a ected.”
Rongoā is a traditional Māori medicine. It is a system of healing that has been passed on orally, and comprises diverse practices with an emphasis on the spiritual dimension of health.
It includes herbal remedies, physical therapies such as massage and manipulation, and spiritual healing.

While growing as individuals is important, the pressure this puts on us to manufacture motivation is simply unattainable.
Setting resolutions has strayed from its purpose in our lives, becoming a yearly ritual of nitpicking our flaws and insecurities. We set unrealistic goals to eat healthier, exercise more, and work
harder, without giving ourselves the time to achieve this, and then fall into a slump of self-loathing year after year from these unreachable goals. We’ve all heard the term SMART goals, but the truth is setting goals that don’t align with those requirements can be highly detrimental to our confidence and mental well-being. By setting attainable goals, it’s easier for them to become a sustainable part of your life, and turn into habits.
• Specific: ask yourself how you will achieve your goal, and consider your responsibility
• Measurable: ensure your goal is trackable, using numbers is a good way to start
• Achievable: consider not reaching for the moon here, start with smaller steps
• Relevant: is your goal beneficial to your well-being, or will it add stress and pressure
• Timely: what’s your timeframe, does it allow enough time within your routine dedicated to your goal?
New Year, New You: the slogan that has long since become a cliché, encouraging us to completely rebuild ourselves into better versions each year.
Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand, Metropol has your inside and your outside covered...

With 2023 well underway, some New Year’s resolutions may have already fallen by the wayside (whoops). It’s not too late, however, to initiate a new lifesaving resolution and start donating blood or plasma right now.
Aotearoa needs more than 4000 blood donations each week, but fewer than four percent of the population are donors. Demand for plasma is also growing. More than 7000 donors are needed in the next 12 months to keep up.
In total, NZ Blood – the sole provider of blood products to New Zealand – needs approximately 40,000 new donors this year to meet requirements. In 2023 demand is predicted to increase by four percent for blood and 10 percent for plasma.
and provide clotting factor concentrates for people with bleeding disorders.
Each donation can save up to three lives, so it is a great resolution to make.
Each donation can save up to three lives, so it’s a great resolution to make.
Plasma’s a little di erent to blood – the collection process involves separating the red blood cells and platelets from the plasma. The red blood cells and platelets are returned to the donor’s body, while the plasma is processed.
In addition to helping those who may have lost blood through accidents, plasma is also used to create up to 11 lifesaving products including those which boost the immune system of people with low levels of antibodies, control autoimmune disorders,
You can donate plasma every 2-3 weeks and blood every three months – making an appointment helps NZ Blood to know when to expect donors, what blood types will be collected, and to forecast stock levels. An appointment will also be convenient for yourself as it will minimise the time you’ll spend at the centre. Several donation sites operate throughout the South Island, including the Christchurch Donor Centre on Lester Lane, Tuam Street Plasma Centre, Dunedin Donor Centre on Crawford Street, as well as a mobile blood drive collection team.
In addition to starting a life-saving habit and making a di erence, when you’re finished with your donation you’ll receive a wee treat of tea, co ee or juice, and a chocolate biscuit too. Head to the website (adjacent) to book in an appointment today, or to find out more information.
Of the total donations each year:
• 3% goes to children including those with cancer
• 6% to bone surgery
• 6% to pregnant women and babies
• 12% to liver, kidney and heart disease
• 21% to accident victims
• 26% to cancer patients
• 26% to other medical conditions and surgical treatments.

Red is the colour of love, and can be used in a variety of ways, every day, to show someone you love them. Here are some quick and easy suggestions:
CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIESperfect when strawberries are in season. Simply melt chocolate buttons over a slow heat, dip the strawberries in, and arrange artistically before serving them. Try white chocolate for a change, and remember to leave the stalks on the berries. Alternatively thread on a kebab stick and serve.
HAND-MADE CHOCOLATES
Invest in a silicone chocolate/candy mould, stock up with chocolate buttons, and fresh fruit such as raspberries. Melt the chocolate, pour half into the moulds, add the fruit, then add the remaining chocolate. Allow to set. Dark chocolate works well with raspberries. Remember fresh fruit goes o so eat as soon as possible.
FRESH BERRY SMOOTHIES
Treat your loved one to a red-hued berry smoothie for breakfast. Milk, yoghurt, berries, a raw egg, and a dash of chilli flakes will set their taste buds on fire.
BERRY PANCAKES
Instead of bacon with pancakes and maple syrup, try fresh berries instead, especially during the summer months. (See our recipe on the next page)
HEART SHAPED COOKIES
If you plan on celebrating Valentine’s Day regularly, invest in a heartshaped cookie cutter. Make your favourite biscuit mix, cut, bake and ice with melted white chocolate, sprinkled with red jelly crystals.
Valentine’s Day doesn’t need to be a huge affair, and neither should treating someone be confined to just one day of the year.
Swapping bacon for berries is a healthier option, and using buttermilk instead of regular milk, ensures light, flu y pancakes. This is a recipe which originated with Annabel Langbein, but has been adapted slightly.
INGREDIENTS — MAKES 10
2 cups self-raising flour
1 Tsp baking powder
1/4 cup raw sugar
2 eggs
1 Tsp vanilla extract
2 cups buttermilk
50g butter, melted, plus extra to cook
2 cups fresh raspberries and/or strawberries
Maple syrup
Separate the egg whites from the yolks. Whisk together the egg yolks, buttermilk and vanilla in a mixing bowl, then whisk in flour, sugar and baking powder.
Add butter and whisk until smooth. Beat the egg whites until sti , and then gently fold into the mix.
Leave to stand for 10 minutes before cooking to allow the gluten to relax.
Melt a little extra butter in a heavy-based frying pan. When it is hot and bubbling, drop in about a quarter cup batter from the end of a spoon.
Cook over a medium heat until bubbles form on the surface (2-3 minutes) then flip to cook the other side. Repeat until the mix is used.
Serve in a stack drizzled with maple syrup, and topped with fresh berries.
Having pancakes for breakfast is a weekend classic from times gone by, but still popular if you have the time.
Naturally, the most popular venues are those that tick all the boxes, an indoor/outdoor flow, spaciousness, ambience and plenty of scope for functions. No. 4 Bar and Restaurant nestles in the heart of Merivale. This handsome 1920s Edwardian villa enjoys a near-celebrity status as one of the most renowned gastropubs in Christchurch.
The open courtyards provide perfect summer dining for groups to gather and sip a tipple while sharing tasty treats from the famed drawcard platter, the “No. 4 Plank”. Prawn Risotto and Beef Wellington are two other signature dishes, while the summer main menu (Monday to Friday) and weekend breakfast brunch menu (from 9.00am weekends and public holidays), tempts every palate.
Gain a new perspective of the Garden City, and travel to a place less-known. Sit back, relax and enjoy the surroundings in an intimate setting. Enjoy the best pizza and cocktails in town.
If planning a function, there are plenty of options here, with The Library bar being one of the most sought after. This secluded but cosy space ensures that every function runs smoothly and delivers guest satisfaction. Information on menus, hours and spaces available for hire can be found on the website.

Especially delicious baking passed down by grandma, with a loyal customer following.
A busy family, now operating Gorgeous Food Specialist Bakery in Springs Road since July, continues the local legacy.
“We were so lucky to find such a good business, owned by really good people,” says co-owner Dana Chap. “Joanne and Peter, who had the bakery for 17 years, are really lovely, and always there to help us with any questions.”
The pastry is now homemade on site, while keeping all the same favourites - from the scrumptious sausage rolls to mama’s fudge that everyone loves. Proud of their pies“there’s more of the slow-cooked beef and less gravy” - the new beef and cheese, lamb and kumara with cheese, and a butter chicken pie, are delicious additions.
Dana and her husband Chanly juggle the new venture with their three-month-old. “We call her Maisy Baker,” she laughs. “My brother-in-law Ethan makes the slices, and my sister, Sam, who are in the shop with me, coincidently have a twomonth old daughter, Alita.”
Dana was a catering cook for Woolworths in Auckland, so the catering side of Gorgeous Food is also sizzling. For orders email NZ_dana@yahoo.com or call 021 024 08866.

A home away from home can be just as cosy and inviting as your usual dwelling, or even more so.
Holiday homes or baches are a place to relax away from it all, and often their interior décor reflects that. After all, no one wants to go on holiday and spend all their time doing housework. The occasional weekend getting the place up to scratch, and a few low maintenance fittings and furnishings will work wonders, and allow you to chill out the rest of the time.
1. INSTALL AN OUTDOOR SHOWER, especially if you have a beachside bach. It’s easy enough to find a private spot outside, and the shower can be run o existing plumbing. A wash down before heading indoors after a day at the beach will help avoid sand inside.
2. INSECT SCREENS ARE A GREAT IDEA if you live near the bush. Many can be retro-fitted to doors and windows, and some are designed to roll up and down around verandahs. They’re an alternative to citronella candles and copious quantities of insect repellent.
3. UPDATE THE DÉCOR WITH THROWS, cushions and floor rugs. White, cream and hues of blue will help create a beachy feel, or go for green and a jungle theme to bring the outdoors in.
DID YOU KNOW?
Carpet Binders also has a luxuriant online selection of rugs to purchase. Support New Zealand farmers by purchasing an NZ-made woollen rug or choose a Persian rug.
In the meantime, here are a few suggestions:

2. CHOOSE FROM A SELECTION OF PROFESSIONAL EDGE FINISHING METHODS, including traditional solid woollen overlocking, and sleek narrow tape binding. This will help you create the ideal look and feel for your home, whether it’s classic, modern, or something in between.
3. CONSIDER THE SIZE OF YOUR ROOM and the area you want to define when selecting your rug. Look for a service that can handle large carpet pieces and can hem or bind single pieces of carpet into finished area rugs tailored to your size.
4. THINK ABOUT THE FUNCTION OF THE ROOM and the type of tra c it receives, when deciding what kind of rug to get. For example, heavy duty mats are perfect for motorhomes, caravans, boats, yachts, and car restoration projects.
5. CHOOSE CHIC CARPETS that complement the existing décor of your home. Look for a service that o ers a wide range of colours, patterns, and textures to choose from, so you can find the perfect rug to match your personal style and aesthetic. www.carpetbinders.nz

One way is by using colour, repainting, upcycling, or remixing things you already own. A great place to start is by accenting one wall with a contrasting or complementary coat of paint.
Select a bold, contrasting colour from a fabric in your living room, or go for a more subtle accent by painting the wall in the same colour family, but a tone darker than the rest of your walls.
When bringing in brighter colours, keep in mind that a little goes a long way. Limit your palette to one, three, or five colours so that your scheme feels cohesive.
One strategy for setting your palette is to start with an eyecatching and colourful piece of artwork that can set the tone for your scheme.
Take your artwork in to your local Resene ColorShop and sta can help you find colours to match or complement it.
Incorporating nature’s colours can also add a lively pop of character to your living space. Be sure to choose plants that will thrive in your lighting conditions or opt for realistic artificial florals. House your greenery in vases and plant pots painted with Resene testpots in your selected hues to tie them in with the rest of your space.

“Some years back, my good friend acquired the family’s old lounge suite. It was a solid, robust old Kovacs suite, with big rolled arms, built to last generations,” retells Neke McDonald of McDonald and Hartshorne, quality furniture and reupholster specialists.
“She had countless discussions over three years with her husband about getting it reupholstered. He was not keen, so dragged
her around furniture stores looking at modern styles. When spotting one he liked, she would pick up one end and exclaim ‘no way, look how light the frame is. It won’t last at all.’ The fact my small-built friend could easily lift a settee was sure sign the frame wasn’t a solid deal. It was always stalemate.
“When visiting us one day, they wandered into the factory to say hi to the team, who happened to be working on a suite similar to their solid heirloom. The new upholstery
caught their attention, as each piece was creatively finished in a di erent fabric, but with the same colour story.
“The next thing you know, we had the samples out. It was all on! He was just as keen as she was. They chose fabrics, plus extra fabric for other pieces in their room, then it was all booked, and sorted.” www.qualityfurniture.co.nz

Common allergens that can a ect dogs include grasses, grass seeds, plants such as wandering dew, and some foods. Unfortunately, the list is extensive and can compound to create an uncomfortable situation for your furry friend. The best way to understand what is a ecting your dog is to track daily what your dog eats, where they have walked, and whether or not a rash or itch has developed.
To break the itch/scratch cycle, where dogs spread the rash over their body due to itching, licking and biting, the solution is to use Eezapet balm at the first signs of skin discomfort or for minor abrasions.
Eezapet was tested by the Wellington SPCA vets and launched to the market in 2014.
“Itching is a real concern for pet owners. In many cases the pet parent is stressed and worried, and often being kept awake at night by the thump, thump and lick, lick, lick of an itchy dog,” says Eezapet owner Heather Murphy.
Eezapet is a solutions-based company that not only sells an e ective itch relief balm, but also has informative blogs with personal experiences of itchy dog problems that range from food, mites, fleas, pollens and a whole lot more.

When your dog is constantly itching, it can be hard to work out how to help.
If you are set on a specific breed of dog and can’t adopt from a shelter, make sure you find ethical breeders and be aware of how puppy scams work. Here’s timely advice from the experts at PD Pet Insurance:
BREEDER
• When researching a breeder, check they’re undertaking all the important health tests, like for certain hereditary and congenital conditions and to assess eyes, ears, hips, thyroid, heart and more. Otherwise you could be stuck with a pup who’s often at the vet.
• Ask to see the puppy and the parents’ living conditions in person (avoid breeder if they refuse), and ensure that they’re being treated well.
• If buying a purebred or pedigree pup, view its papers beforehand and take them on purchase.
• A great resource to find a professional breeder locally is www.dogsnz.org.nz
SCAMMERS
• Scammers often prey on individuals looking for small, popular, and expensive breeds such as English and French Bulldogs, and hybrid breeds like the
Spoodle. However, puppy scams can occur with any breed.
• Try to avoid buying online but if you do, meet the pup (and, if possible, parents) in person before purchase. When bringing a new pup into your life, it’s also important to think about potential vet bills and other pet care costs.
Consider PD Pet Insurance, which is o ering two months’ free insurance for dogs aged under a year old and one month free for older dogs.

Many youngsters start out with a pet goldfish in a bowl, and some progress through to having their own home aquariums.
Creating your own aquarium is relatively easy, depending on what type of fish, and how many you want to keep. Guppies, zebrafish, goldfish, loaches, mollies, neon tetras, and suckerfish are some of the easiest fish to take care of in a community aquarium. Talk to an expert at your local pet shop for advice. Here are Metropol’s suggestions for setting up a tropical fish aquarium:
1. DECIDE WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO PUT IT, AND HOW BIG IT WILL BE. Some fish tanks come with a stand, others are freestanding. Choose a place where it is out of direct sunlight, near a power supply,
and in a draught-free, relatively consistent temperature area.
2. RINSE GRAVEL, FILTER (if using one), rocks, plants, and ornaments in cold tap water, then add to tank, creating an underwater garden for the fish to play in.
3. FILL WITH WATER, THEN ADD HEATER NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE AQUARIUM. Make sure it is not touching the gravel or anything else in the aquarium.
4. SET UP EXTERNAL FILTRATION AND LIGHTING as per the instructions in the product manual.
5. ADD A WATER CONDITIONER AND BACTERIAL AGENT and wait for a couple of days so it settles, and the water comes up to temperature, before adding your fish.
From rows of plants in test tubes lining the wall, to complete plant coverage, there are numerous ways to go about it.
Here are some suggestions:
1. DECIDE WHERE AND HOW BIG. Assess the environment, and make sure there is plenty of natural light to encourage plant growth. Bright, indirect light is ideal for most plant walls.
2. SORT THE STYLE AND DESIGN OF THE WALL. It may be as simple as a DIY shelving system for pots to sit on, or an inbuilt, long-term, plant wall system, complete with timed water drippers, professionally designed and constructed.
3. THINK ABOUT WHAT PLANTS WILL WORK BEST IN YOUR WALL. Select low maintenance varieties such as pothos (Epipremnum aureum), philodendron,
dracaena, and anthurium plants. Ferns also work well. Make sure all the plants on your wall require the same type of care.
4. PLANT WALLS NEED REGULAR MAINTENANCE, AND WATERING. A hand-held sprayer works well if you don’t have an in-built system. Regularly check your plants for bugs and disease, keep them clean, and prune them regularly.

One of the prettiest current plant trends is an indoor green wall, in homes, offices and cafes too.
Anew app, developed by a group of New Zealand researchers can let you do just that.
Members of the TAIAO project at Waikato and Canterbury universities have used a data set of more than one million identified images to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify Aotearoa’s plants, animals and fungi. It’s the first tool tailor-made for Aotearoa wildlife and plant species.
The programme recognises unique features in photos of species large and small, from Hector’s dolphins to striated ants, and returns the scientific name, common names, and other related classifications, including Māori names where available.
The Aotearoa Species Classifier app can also identify wildlife wherever the user is, even without an internet connection. For those who wish to delve deeper at home,
there’s an additional web classifier with more powerful models and tools.
PhD student Hongyu Wang and research programmer Paul Schlumbom developed the models and software and are continuing to work on the project. Paul says they have discovered some unexpected benefits.
be taken to remove or destroy dangerous pests straight away,” Paul says.
A probability prediction is included in the identification with alternatives if there is any doubt about the likelihood of the species identified.
Hongyu says this ensures the integrity of the data. “We can say that normally the confidence is quite high, but with rare species the model might have more trouble. So you can check the top five possibilities if the confidence is not super high.”
The Aotearoa Species Classifier app is available in the App store now and on Google Play later this year.
“Because we have drawn data from a range of sources, the app is also able to identify pests, which means action can

Welcome to 2023: a year that, like its recent predecessors, will have its very own signature.
That combination of continuing market changes (think price), challenges (think interest rates plus inflationary pressure) and beauty (or opportunity, as I like to call it).
I’m curious about the year ahead. We have an election, always interesting, given its potential to hamper major decision-making at both an individual and a national level, and we have that vacuum created when everyone is trying to pick the bottom of the market and the likelihood of an upswing.
Which, I might add, will eventually happen, as it has every other time there’s been a slump in activity –repositioning, as some industry experts like to describe the current market.
Last year, at about this time, I looked at my very old and battered crystal ball hoping for some sort of insight befitting my now 29-year tenure.
I noted that experts were at odds, with opinions that ranged from a 4% decrease in prices across the board to others thinking that the astronomical gains of the 2020/’21 period could continue. In retrospect, it looks like no-one realised the depth of the correction we would go on to experience – or the level of zeal the Reserve Bank would bring to the country with its ‘stop spending’ and ‘beware the property market is unsustainable’ mandate.
Frequent increases in our OCR levels, interest rate rises (with more to come) have all but brought to a halt that runaway horse we were riding, one which had indulged itself on huge increases in property values, cheap money and eye-watering auction clearance rates.
So where are we going?
A lot of the dialogue is once again mixed, so maybe rather than look at data (which can be confusing no matter how experienced you are) I’d prefer to look at opportunities that are being created.
I’m thinking about you, buyers!
You are the lucky ones in this orbit of the marketing cycle.
Do not squander your chances while standing on the side-line thinking, I’ll wait it out, I’ll squeeze every last ounce of opportunity out of the seller.
You have so much on your side, especially choice, that most exquisite of factors which over the last few years has been such a rarity.
There are large numbers of properties on or coming to the market. On December 19th, 2022, there were 1,917 Christchurch homes for sale.
Owners are also more educated as to prices now, many doing their best with both their presentation and their negotiation opportunities, and you, our dedicated buyers, have the chance to lock in your interest rate.
Make the decision to buy and get on, or further up, the property ladder, because you certainly have that chance.
It’s perhaps a fact of human nature that even when you have everything you could possibly want, you’ll still go for more. That’s the dilemma I’ve seen with some buyers as they challenge prices, even those that are vastly reduced, whilst insisting on extra chattels to be included in the sale. Rather than the property, we’re talking fridges, spas, trampolines and cushions.
But there’s a flipside here. Recently (January 5th, 2023), CoreLogic noted that although there’s been a nationwide drop in prices, slowing in December, Christchurch bucked the trend (the only main centre to do so).
Here’s the clincher: Christchurch is an incredibly affordable city with attractive lifestyle options, so despite everything that’s happening we are still fortunate here.
With that, I’m keen to make the most of what’s ahead. I’ve planned a massive year prioritizing health and wellbeing, doing great business and hopefully getting out of my comfort zone.
Is this the time to get out of yours?

“To o er that extra touch of pampering to clients is paramount. Bring on the cocktails.”
It’s natural to think about the future at the start of the new year. For Urban Development, the newest team here at ChristchurchNZ, future focus is part of the everyday.
There is tremendous value in intentional urban planning and place-making. With a wide, long-term lens, we can influence outcomes that will work best for our city and its residents, in partnership with private and not-forprofit sectors. We can support the development of great neighbourhoods, and people-focused, mixed use districts, supporting the local economy.
The team is facilitating fantastic projects in our city, working with council, government organisations, developers, investors and local communities to create opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors alike. One of these projects is the old Citycare site on Milton Street, Sydenham, where site preparation
works are underway, enabling construction of a new research facility and upgrades to water and electricity infrastructure.
Part of the site will be developed into a sustainable residential project, near Sydenham Park. This will result in a well-designed neighbourhood close to jobs, services, recreation and pedestrian, cycling and public transport options.
The value won’t stop at the site boundary, also creating communities and connections to both park and city, with the research facility providing good employment opportunities.
With time, patience and capital, thoughtful urban development will support the city’s sustainable urban growth and economic development goals.
Over the past few weeks, our team has been returning to the office, refreshed and looking forward to the year ahead.
We’ve already held our first event for 2023, and more are planned over the coming weeks, including an event we are particularly excited to see get underway –Game On Canterbury.
Taking place on Sunday 19 February, Game On Canterbury is a first for Ōtautahi Christchurch –a new event aimed at showcasing the sport and active recreation activities in our city, and encouraging people to sign in, join up and get active.
I’ve spoken previously about the responsibility we feel towards our community. As a regeneration project
for the city, we acknowledge the role we have in supporting the growth and success of our city and its residents – and not just through economic impact.
Game On Canterbury is one of those ways we can give back. We’ve partnered with a local company to get this underway, attracting local sports and organisations for the benefit of local residents.
There’s a big focus on fun, and there will be plenty of opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to try something new, or simply enjoy a day out with their whanau.
We hope you’ll come down and check it out.
We saw couriers racing around delivering goods, and the stifling presence of shoppers in unprecedented numbers in retail outlets right across the Canterbury region.
For others there was a di erent scenario. Spending constraints were palpable. We witnessed the pressure on charitable institutions desperately working to improve outcomes for many who were facing a tough festive season.
Demands on food banks and base level accommodation, pressures on mental health providers and anti-social behaviours were all increasingly evident.
These sad and challenging aspects of society are more acute every year and seem to show no signs of abating.
This year there was also reinforcement of the new dimension - families prevented from getting
together because of Covid-19 infections, or the lingering threat of Covid-19. Or possibly worse, families getting together with the best possible intentions and maybe creating a superspreader event.
The ongoing direct and indirect ramifications of Covid-19 on travel and service delivery, particularly in the hospitality sector, were unprecedented. However, we got through, and paradoxically all these disruptive dynamics made us more aware of what we really should be celebrating.
For many the “flu ”, the tinsel, the indulgences, the extravagances took second place to simply enjoying time with others, valued friendships, good company, and positive family interaction. There was a realisation that health issues (not just Covid-19) can compromise what the festive season is really all about.
LEEANN WATSON PHIL MAYORIhad a fantastic time away with my family for Christmas and New Year, but now it’s time to get down to business with a busy year ahead. Since being back in the o ce, I have been getting out and about in the city and it is great to see so many people enjoying the cafes, bars, shops, markets, and all the other attractions Christchurch has on o er.
The trams have been full and river banks are packed with people, enjoying the Garden City’s hospitality. We have been so spoilt with a number of enjoyable, and even spectacular, events over the summer. The return of the Bread & Circus World Buskers
Festival, the Christchurch T20 Black Clash, Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, and Treetech Sparks, to name just a few, have drawn people of all ages to the city, and also to explore wider Canterbury.
Christchurch has a real buzz, and it feels like we have really turned a corner in getting back on our feet after the Covid-19 pandemic ground the city to a halt.
I have a good feeling about 2023, and what better way to showcase our city to the world than by hosting the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix on Lyttelton Harbour in March. Bring it on!
I hope you had a well-earned summer break and are feeling refreshed for the coming year.
every one
all know it was an odd run up to Christmas.
Construction of Christchurch’s indoor sports and aquatics facility, Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, is now expected to be complete in spring 2024.
Construction sector constraints, challenging ground conditions and regular changes to the construction programme have continued to hamper progress, which Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive, John Bridgman, says is disappointing for everyone involved.
“We know people are incredibly eager to ride the hydroslides, play on the indoor courts and move their sport’s HQ into Parakiore, but the contractor hasn’t made
enough progress during this challenging period to have the work completed late 2023 as planned, and has revised its timetable accordingly,” he says.
“As the owner of Parakiore, Christchurch City Council will need time to commission the facility. If the build is finished towards the end of 2024, an early 2025 opening would be likely.
“Worker numbers are now increasing, which gives us greater confidence in the
road ahead,” he adds.
“While construction will take longer to complete, we have a fixed-price contract with the contractor and any variations beyond the $317m already allocated will be worked through and agreed on with the contractor at a later date, but these won’t prevent us completing this outstanding facility.”
Council’s funding contribution to Parakiore remains capped.

oment of Movement was designed by New Zealand Korean multi-media artist, Seung Yul Oh, in association with John Troy O’Sullivan, and may be seen on the Colombo St side of Te Pae.
“Seeing what started as a small sketch of mine become one of the largest outdoor artworks in central Christchurch that you can touch and walk around is magic,” says Seung Yul.
“Even people going past every day will
get a di erent experience from this piece each time, because of the way the reflective surfaces change with the light of the day and night.”
The $220,000 artwork comprises 21 individually curved fibre-glass panels totalling 69m2 of surface area.
Ōtākaro Limited Principal Landscape
Architect, Peter Matthews, says the artwork adds an additional point of interest for visitors to Te Pae and Christchurch’s developing Performing Arts Precinct. “We wanted a piece that captures the
international quality of this convention centre. Moment of Movement forms the entry to Te Pae’s administration building that sets the scene and welcomes new prospective clients.
“Given the unique space in which Moment of Movement sits and the tapering forms of the work, it made sense to tackle the installation once the building was complete.
“With the artwork, Te Aika and Hana all visible on a walk around the outside of Te Pae, we’d encourage everyone to come take a look at these magnificent new artworks.”

Roger Gilchrist Building Services from Ōamaru won the National Supreme Renovation of the Year, National Kitchen Excellence Award, and National Renovation
Over $1.5 million category in the 2022 awards for turning an 1800s homestead into a luxurious, modern family home.
The owner’s vision for this property was to re-imagine the evolution of this family home.
“The old and the new have been blended to ensure it continues to serve both the
family and community by providing an oasis for reflection and inspiration,” say the judges. “This magnificent renovation is one to truly be admired.
“The transformation of this 783 square metre home was an outstanding team e ort between the homeowners, architect, builder, sub-trades and interior designer.”
Judges say the elegant kitchen is the ultimate entertainer’s dream and is certainly “the heart of the home”, positioned strategically within the main living area, with direct access to two outdoor
entertaining areas. The solid marble bench top and oak joinery below is matched with the rear bench, while marvellous views of the estate and hills beyond are provided through large bifold windows. Natural light pours through into the heart of the kitchen.
They noted that the impressive renovation has been brilliantly conceived, designed, and constructed, and the end result is “nothing but awe inspiring”.

The pool complex was a winner in the commercial category of the 2022 New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) awards.
Near Methven and close to the base of Ōpuke, the complex design references a journey across the Canterbury Plains, through the nearby Rakaia Gorge, and into the mountains beyond.
Judges say the architects cleverly illustrated this journey with material selections and architectural forms that reference ideas of protection, compression, and opening: a gabion walled entranceway leads one inside, where internally expressed roof grid of LVL beams float mountain-like above beech-clad interiors. From here, alternate pathways lead to family, adults-only, or exclusive luxury spa areas, making this facility a pleasure to explore, and a positive addition to the area’s tourism.

Designed with sustainability in mind, the Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa in Methven has proven to be a winner for the environment, and also for Sheppard & Rout Architects.
