The new Events Transition Support Scheme aims to give organisers of larger events greater confidence to plan and incur costs, with the government shouldering the lion’s share of risk during planning stages. Organisers of large-scale summer festivals have to decide now about proceeding, as their risk windows close. Insurance options aren’t available hence the government’s new underwriting scheme. The plug has already been pulled on Christchurch’s Christmas in the Park, the South Island Wine and Food Festival

Helping heritage live on 8 25 November, 2021 Metropol
Throughout her life, Dame Anna Crighton has been interested in art and architecture. She talks with Metropol editor Lynda Papesch about the past, the present, and the future. ‘Heritage’ is derived from Middle English and old French, heriter to ‘inherit’ - to inherit valued objects and qualities such as property and cultural traditions that have been passed down from previous generations. For Dame Anna Crighton, DNZM, QSO, JP, PhD (Otago), Chair and Trustee of the Christchurch Heritage Charitable Trust, it provides tangible milestones and reminders of our journey as a culture. Her own journey into preserving our heritage started early in life. “As a child I would always be drawing and painting and I carried that passion through to eventually pass, as a mature student, my Fine Arts Preliminary to the Canterbury University School of Art,” she remembers. The young Anna was also attracted to old houses and buildings “When aged 10, while visiting a run-down Larnach Castle in Dunedin, I recall dreaming of owning it one day and restoring it.” When it came to enrolling at the University of Canterbury, she changed tack and instead of taking the Art School option, enrolled for her Bachelor of Arts, studying Art History, History and Classics through to Stage 3. “My MA followed and I combined papers on architectural history with a thesis covering New Zealand colonial architecture. My PhD covered art and architecture too. It was awarded with distinction in 2012.” Long before that, Dame Anna had immersed herself in protecting and saving as many of New Zealand’s historic buildings as she could, but the
2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes kick-started a new impetus much closer to home. Her self-appointed mission was to rescue as many historic buildings as she could from demolition. These days, it is largely thanks to her determination that The Garden City has so many outstanding heritage buildings remaining. “When I first started as a [city] councillor in the 90s, heritage protection wasn’t even on the agenda,” she recalls, adding that it has really progressed after the last 25 years. “It is still a challenge, but it is pleasing that more people are involved in protecting heritage.” Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and the Christchurch City Council in their District Plan both list significant buildings which deserve to be saved for future generations because of their generational importance. “Heritage provides tangible milestones and reminders of our journey as a culture,” says Dame Anna. “History, through our buildings, tells the story of our city’s past and progress, of our settlers of many origins, and of the homes, businesses and places they built and created here. “Built heritage provides inspiration for artistic creativity, a foundation for tourism and economic development. They help us to remember, to learn, to belong and to share our stories with others. They are sentinels of living memory; and unlike the heritage of foreign soils, their uniqueness lies in the immediacy of the connection between us as descendants, and our ancestors.”

Fast facts Dame Anna’s accomplishments are wide ranging. They include helping to preserve more than a dozen local heritage buildings, including the Centre of Contemporary Art building, St Barnabas Church in Fendalton, part of the Arts Centre, the former Trinity Church in Central Christchurch, the Shands building and the Isaac Theatre Royal. Other achievements include:
Establishing the Christchurch Heritage Trust in 1996. Chair of the Christchurch Heritage Awards Charitable Trust since 2009. A member of the Canterbury District Health Board for 12 years. Made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order in 2005. Awarded the title Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2020 New Year’s Honours. Metropol 25 November, 2021 9

rowing up on a commune without a television or electricity, Julia Strelou was always drawn to the media industry. In those days she was only allowed to watch television at the shared community centre or at friends’ places. “There is lots of drug abuse in Nimbin, the town nearest the commune where I grew up. Kids can get stuck in the cycle. I just feel lucky, that despite growing up with nothing, my mother gave me the gift of an education which allowed me to get out and pursue my dreams.” After working in the Australasian media industry for 10 years, Julia started Addicted to Media, which operates as a freelance marketing agency focusing mainly on copywriting and social media. As well as running Addicted to Media, Julia is a best-selling author of poetry and an advocate for female empowerment. “When we were little, my sister and I would have to go to multiple pubs while my mum entered in poetry slams. I guess this rubbed off somehow,” she laughs. Julia first began posting her poems on Instagram in 2015, starting as way of dealing with her personal trauma. Six years down the track, her readers have come on a journey of personal development with her through her art. Her nomination for the Arts and Culture category came about as a result of Her Story; a compilation of poems inspired by the stories of over 200 women who had experienced domestic abuse. “Every day I would get messages from women telling me that my poetry healed them in some way,” she says. “Her Story was about giving women a voice and telling their stories instead of telling mine.” The Women of Influence awards are designed to celebrate women making a positive difference with the work they do. Julia donates 10 percent from every book sold to the Women’s Refuge and she is working with the group to organise an awards function and gala to celebrate inspirational women in the QueenstownLakes region, as well as raising funds and awareness for the cause. “It’s nice to be recognised for all the hard work I did with Her Story, but really I should be thanking all the women who were brave enough to share their stories with me.” As Julia looks to the future, she hopes to continue to lead and inspire through her art. “I am really grateful for awards like this. I think they give women who are striving to bring about positive change a bit more of a platform to do so.”
The Women of Influence Awards 2021 are currently scheduled to be announced in Auckland on February 10, next year. More than 60 New Zealanders were named as finalists in the 9th annual awards, jointly presented by Westpac NZ and Stuff. The awards recognise women both making a difference in the work they do and paving the way for others to follow. Previous Supreme Winners include microbiologist and science communicator Siouxsie Wiles (2020), neonatologist Dame Jane Harding (2019) and founder of anti-domestic violence charity The Aunties, Jackie Clarke (2018). A symbol of love As beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside, local Christchurch business LOVE IN A JEWEL creates special keepsakes with a difference.
Are you concerned about the financial system? We can help you leave it. Bank yourself in Crypto Currency and be part of the the greatest opportunity since the invention of the internet.
T
he idea was born when Tracy van Oostrum asked her jeweller husband Joachim to craft a special pendant that would keep her mother’s memory close. Finding a thoughtful solution sparked an idea, and he came up with a collection of beautiful pieces designed to hold a heartfelt hand-penned note, lock of hair or even ashes of a loved one who had passed.
To introduce this exciting new addition to the international jewellery world, they took it to the 2017 International Jewellery Fair in Sydney, where it quickly became a finalist in the International Jewellery Design Awards. Tracy says, “While creating LOVE IN A JEWEL, we realised the most treasured pieces of jewellery you own in life are not what is on trend, or the most high-end, it is about the love that is connected to it, that is the jewellery we treasure the most and that is what makes our collection so special, as it holds personal love inside forever.’’ “Whether you want your pendant to hold sand from the beach you got engaged at, or soil from your first family home, or a note of love to the person who is everything to you, LOVE IN A JEWEL allows you to treasure these memories for the rest of your life, letting you hold your love story close to your heart wherever you go,” Joachim says. After the first lockdown in 2020, the couple made the decision to handcraft 100 percent of the Keepsake Collection here in New Zealand and support local businesses. Q: Will there be a handover process if I buy a business? short answer is “Yes”. As part of A: anThe Agreement for the Sale and Purchase of a Business, there is a handover process included. Upon settlement date (when the business is paid for, and the Purchaser takes possession), the Vendor hands over to the Purchaser keys, security codes, passwords for websites and

Helping migrants call NZ home Immigration New Zealand has confirmed new details about the 2021 Residence Visa category, which offers a one-off opportunity for many migrants living here. Under certain new criteria, many migrants who are currently living and working in New Zealand can now apply for a residence visa. Immigration New Zealand says that the 2021 Residence Visa category “recognises the immense contribution migrants have made to New Zealand during Covid-19 and the uncertainty they’ve faced with closed borders and necessary changes to immigration settings”. Immigration specialists, Migration Associates is here in Christchurch to help, with four licensed immigration advisers available to assist with enquiries and applications. They can also help with other immigration matters such as the Critical Purpose Visitor Visa applications necessary to enable
certain classes of people to travel to New Zealand despite closed border.s. With a proven track-record of providing comprehensive and authoritative New Zealand immigration advice, the company is helping many clients who are among the thousands of migrants eligible to apply for residency under the 2021 Resident Visa category. “We can assist them to determine whether they and their family are eligible, and then help them plan their pathway to residence in New Zealand,” says company principal Borey Chum. “ If you have any questions about your eligibility to apply for residence under the 2021 Resident Visa category, please contact us for assistance.”
Eligibility for the 2021 Residence Visa Criteria Have been in New Zealand on September 29 this year. Be on an eligible visa or have applied for an eligible visa before September 29. Have lived in New Zealand for three or more years; or earn at or above the median wage ($27 per hour); or work in a role on the ‘scarce list’.
Visa eligibility All applicants must already hold a Post Study Work Visa, Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa, Essential Skills Work Visa, Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Visa, Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa and in some cases, a Critical Purpose Visitor Visa. Applications open Phase One opens December 1 for people who have submitted a Skilled Migrant Category or Residence from Work application, plus those with dependent children 17 years or older who currently have an SMC Expression of Interest submitted. Phase Two opens on March 1 next year for all other eligible applicants, including any others in the SMC Expression of Interest pool, can apply.

arion & Co. Jewellery is synonymous with style. Founder Marion McKellow began her jewellery business in 1995. Garnering design inspiration around the globe, she sought artisans that allowed her to ethically source all her pieces and bring them to back to Aotearoa for her customers and clients. Her first shop was in Merivale, and it was a success story from the start. Eight years later she established a concept store in Ballantynes that took her brand to that next level. Post-quake, she re-established herself in Merivale as a style standout with her bespoke collection adding a point of
difference to what was on offer in the local shops. While her online business is booming, Marion has also opened a new boutique in Rangiora’s High Street. The sleek, stylish boutique is an ideal fit for this ‘turned trendy’ location, a 15-minute drive outside of Christchurch, giving North Canterbury a new luxury shopping destination to turn to. For that extra special something, and high quality, one-of-akind designs that Marion & Co. is renowned for, visit the new boutique located at 144 High Street in Rangiora, or shop online. marionandcojewellery.com

For days spent by the pool, lake or beach, swimwear is a given, and finding something you are comfortable in is key. This looks different for everyone, and with a bit of trial and error you can find just the fit for you, whether that is a one piece, a bikini or something in between. Having a breathable and lightweight coverup is a great trick to keeping cool and protecting your skin. Try a linen shirt, loose pants, light kaftan or dress.

For night-time, floaty dresses and skirts are the way to go. They prevent any tight and clingy feelings, and allow you to relax in comfort during the warm evenings. Bright colours are a must, and this season there are beautiful bold shades of yellow, pink and blue to style. A bit of bling and a simple heel will elevate your simple summer look. Our favourite tip – keep makeup minimal and embrace fresh glowing skin, with a touch of mascara and bit of colour on the lip!

Ageless makeup for over 50s Wear the makeup, don’t have it wear you. That’s the advice from many beauticians, who are full of great, subtle tips for natural-looking makeup for women aged over 50. Instead of trying to hide flaws, enhance what you’ve got. Here are some tips from Metropol.
Create a glowing base
Following a dedicated skin-care routine— cleansing, moisturising, and exfoliating—is essential for a healthy complexion. Before applying makeup, use a weightless, hydrating moisturiser on clean skin. Once the moisturiser sinks in, target areas with fine lines or dry patches with a quickabsorbing primer or smoothing gel.
Cover up conservatively
Trying to hide wrinkles will only draw more attention to them. To even out skin tone, use a moist sponge or foundation brush to apply a sheer, hydrating foundation. Use a lightweight creamy concealer that blends easily on the more ruddy or hyper-pigmented areas. Concentrate on the under eyes and inner corners to combat dark circles.
Warm up the skin
Select a foundation or concealer a shade or two warmer to ensure you don’t look washed out. Extend coverage beyond the face, using a foundation brush to blend slightly around the neck so it doesn’t look obvious. Add bronzer on the cheeks, under the cheekbone, down the sides of the nose, across the forehead, and under the jawline.
Healthy, clear nails made simple. Programme still running under Level 2 restrictions

We don’t hear as much as we should about pampering for men, but it’s deserved, it’s here, and it should be part of your routine. The traditional barber’s shop was always more than a stopover for a tidy-up. It was a centre of friendship and news, personal service and relaxation, and that’s exactly what you find at Pride Barbers.
H
aving moved location to Unit 5 at 1004 Ferry Road in Ferrymead opposite Countdown, Pride Barbers has been careful to take the stunning fitout with them. The traditional masculine feel includes classic chairs, herringbone wooden floors and cabinetry handmade by Director Annalese Thornley’s husband, and are complemented with gold trim and an elegant feel. Gentlemen with a leisurely day planned can sip on a whisky during their visit. Old style charm and barbering
The scrunchie gains a hold CURATED BY KIA DIRKSON
Style tends to be a bit of history repeating itself and that aptly applies to hair styles as well. The ‘scrunchie’ is most definitely back and it has a hold on all of us again. Hailing from circa 1980, you can now (once again) find them at shops all over town. That essential elastic band has returned still wrapped in a soft silk or crisp cotton fabric and offered in a kaleidoscope of colours that are fashionably fit for all.
H
air ties tend to pull and break the hair which leads to unevenness and damage. Try one of these colourful options to easily protect and manage hair. Both then and now, the scrunchie creates a carefree style that leaves you feeling both put together and stylish.
Recreating your youthful smile There is a huge difference in Richard’s work. The teeth have to suit the patient. Often there has been some volume lost in the face before the client visits his studio. With all this (and more) in mind, Richard crafts dentures to enhance appearance, while at the same time improving fit and functionality.

A no brainer Former All Black Carl Hayman revealed recently that he is suffering from early onset dementia, and has joined a class action suing world rugby for failing to protect players from the dangers of head knocks.
H
e’s not the first and won’t be the last sportsperson to suffer or to sue. A serious head injury, with loss of consciousness, is associated with a higher risk of developing dementia, and all too frequently these occur in a variety of sports. Dementia is a general term used to describe a decline in mental functioning to the point that it impairs your ability to carry out daily tasks. The most common
PHYSIOTHERAPY
type of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease, although other forms include vascular dementia, Lewy Body dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Creutzfeld-Jakob disease and Huntington’s Chorea. Some dementia risk factors, such as aging and genes, are difficult or impossible to change, however various lifestyle factors that affect risk can be changed. Taking care of your head is one of these.
Traumatic brain injury H
ead injury describes a range of conditions inflicted on the scalp, skull, brain, and the underlying tissue and blood vessels in your head. Head injuries and other trauma can cause a type of brain injury known as ‘traumatic brain injury’ or TBI. A concussion is a mild TBI. A traumatic brain injury is caused by a bump or blow to your head or body that causes your brain to shake inside your skull causing damage. According to ACC, about 36,000 people in New Zealand experience a traumatic brain injury every year with many of those people experiencing ongoing medical problems for the rest of their lives. Common causes are sports injuries, falls, assaults and car accidents. For certain sports and recreational activities, it’s crucial to wear a helmet that fits correctly. Headgear is recommended for wrestling, boxing and rugby, and also for skiing, snowboarding, cycling, scootering, motorbiking, rock climbing, horse riding, skateboarding and similar sports.

Tools for learning It is an irrefutable fact that children learn through experience and emulating what they see and hear around them.
T
he copying of adult activities, such as cooking, gardening or constructing things, is fundamental to children’s development and skill building, as well as their overall health and happiness. The Canterbury Playcentre Shop has a wide assortment of tools designed for children, that allow them to have a go at building things, thinking creatively and problem solving.
And unlike most, the tools are not plastic; they are proper robust tools that will do the job they are intended for. Shop co-manager Jessamy says nothing frustrates a child more than not being able to complete a project because of inadequate tools. “Plastic tools just won’t do it.” Jessamy says current uncertainty around Covid-19 has seen a rise in the sales of
tools and workbenches for children. “Woodwork not only occupies the mind and hands, but teaches kids so much as well.” The workbenches are as sturdy as the tools and are the perfect height for youngsters. Along with the workbenches are nails, screws, screwdrivers, hammers, saws, hacksaws, pliers, wrenches, vices, paintbrushes, and carpentry aprons for holding the tools. A delicious tradition
C
hristmas lunch or dinner is often the main event of the day, with gift-giving and activities planned for before or after. It is a time to gather with nearest and dearest and share a meal, be it a casual garden barbeque or an extravagant sit-down dinner. Every culture has its version of tradition, but largely western societies celebrate the reinvented medieval tradition of a glorious leg of ham.
Supposedly, the tradition stems from Germany, in an attempt to appease Freyr, the god of fertility and harvest. A wild boar was the sacrifice of choice for Freyr, and so they would feast during their Yuletide celebrations. Today, the wild boar has been replaced by the pig, and now roast pork, or more commonly, the Christmas ham, a central part of many Christmas tables. Although there are the Victorian England traditions

of goose and turkey, the ham was also a prominent main dish in British holiday traditions. Whatever tradition or non-tradition your household chooses, having a centrepiece for your Christmas table is the best way to ensure bellies are full and happy, plus it looks beautiful when plated with a bit of festive finesse. Gorgeous glossy glaze A good glaze completely transforms a ham, chicken or turkey. It adds delicious flavour and a beautiful golden layer that caramelises when baking. As the hero of the Christmas table, having a sticky, glossy glaze will lift the whole spread and make it look all the more indulgent.
T
he trick with a glaze is to have some sweetness in the ingredients, combined with a fruity or tangy flavour. You want to balance these well, so there is a sweetness in the caramelised layer, which complements the salty flavour of the ham, chicken or turkey. There are so many options for glaze recipes, and each family has their take, whether it is traditional, something more modern and updated, or of course a secret family recipe. Common ingredients include jam or preserves, brown sugar, maple syrup or honey, fruit juice, mustard, cloves and cinnamon.
Here are a few flavour combinations to consider for this year’s glaze. Ham • Brown sugar, cloves and orange juice • Pineapple, brown sugar and mustard • Lime, soy sauce and chilli • Cherry, maple and cinnamon Chicken • Maple and red wine vinegar • Orange juice, cinnamon and mustard • Lemon, honey and soy sauce • Bourbon, brown sugar and apple juice Turkey • Orange juice, cranberry and honey • Irish whiskey, maple and butter • Apple juice, butter and honey • Apricot, lemon and sage

White chocolate and cherry cheesecake
Method 1.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. Line a 26cm cake tin with baking paper and grease well.
2.
Pulse the biscuits in a blender or smash them in a sealable bag with a rolling pin—then stir through the melted butter. Press the biscuit crumb around the bottom and up the sides of the tin as firmly as you can. Cover with plastic wrap and pop into the fridge while you get the filling ready.
3.
Soften the cream cheese slightly. Add to the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment fitted (or use hand-held electric beaters) and start to whip the cream cheese. Add the sugar and vanilla and keep whisking on a medium-high speed.
Serves 8
Ingredients Cheesecake
400g vanilla wine biscuits 200g butter, melted 500g cream cheese 1 cup caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste 3 eggs 1 Tbsp cornflour 250g sour cream 200g white chocolate, melted
Cherry compote
500g frozen pitted cherries ½ cup sugar 1 Tbsp Bakers Blend, OR 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp mixed spice
4.
Add in the eggs, one at a time, then the cornflour. Add the sour cream and continue whisking until everything is very well combined and the mixture is smooth. Turn the mixer off, drizzle in the white chocolate and fold through.
5.
Remove the plastic wrap from the chilled biscuit base, and pour in the filling. Pop the cake tin on a tray and into the oven for 1 hour until just set. Leave on the bench to cool completely, then pop into the fridge to set— overnight ideally, but 4 hours minimum.
6.
For the cherry compote, put the frozen cherries, sugar and Bakers Blend in a saucepan. Simmer gently for around 25 minutes until thick and syrupy. The compote can be made a day ahead and will last for 7 days in the fridge.
7.
To serve, cut the cheesecake into 8–10 slices and serve with a few generous spoonfuls of the cherry compote.

Delectable dining in Ashburton The idea was to bring a Christchurch restaurant vibe to Ashburton. Hosts of The Fine Lion multi-cuisine restaurant, Matt and Belinda Fine, did their research around the new balcony bars and restaurants of Christchurch’s Terrace and brought to life their very own in the mid-Canterbury town.
T
he couple have a great deal of experience in the hospitality industry, having run an Irish bar in town for six years and another restaurant for seven. They saw a gap in the market in Ashburton for a different style of dining experience – slightly upmarket food in a casual
relaxed environment. A brand-new building on Burnett Street offered them just the space they were looking for – a first floor restaurant with a balcony facing west to catch the last rays of the sun setting over the mountains. As Matt and Belinda put it, “Day and night,
both inside the restaurant and outside on the balcony, you can enjoy everything The Fine Lion has to offer.” What is offered is varied, delicious and beautifully presented. The “Trust the Chef Ultimate Grazing Platter” is a speciality of the kitchen team led by Head Chef Kinnear Horsburgh, and perfect for sharing with friends on the balcony. Lunch is available every day until 4pm. There’s a fresh menu for summer with delights ranging from quinoa salad to prawn puttanesca linguine, the slow cooked lamb shoulder and shank or the buttermilk fried chicken. The “Main Act” of dinner has equally enticing fare with pork belly or salmon, lamb loin or steak along with vegan/vegetarian options and irresistible “Sweet Afterthoughts”. The interior of the restaurant is as equally delectable as the food with its mosaic tiles, lush greenery and a certain post-colonial feel. Culinary serenity We can’t travel to the Pacific Islands right now to watch the sun setting over the water. But, what if there was somewhere closer to home to catch that glorious sight? There is.
R
ight on the edge of the beautiful and serene Lake Hood in Mid-Canterbury sits The Lake House. Its stunning new outside dining space is covered and heated and is the perfect spot to watch the sun go down while enjoying a cool beverage and taste-tempting, seasonal culinary delights. The Lake House’s food and drink menus complement its fantastic location. They cater for all types of occasions and functions, from an intimate dinner to weddings, family celebrations, and all manner of corporate events. The cuisine choices are many
and varied. One distinctive feature is “smoke”, a low and slow American BBQ menu, while the a la carte menu offered in the restaurant uses local produce wherever possible to create dishes full of flavour and style. There’s Canterbury lamb of course and premium grass-fed, grain-finished beef, South Island salmon, fresh bread from the local bakery and cheeses from the local cheese factory. Festive fun for all After a disrupted year, group cohesion needs a bit of a boost and the perfect time to re-establish those bonds is at the Christmas do.
E
veryone needs a place to escape. Somewhere to pull up, unwind and let the world roll on by” is the mantra of the Pedal Pusher. This is truer than ever at the end of 2021. The ‘world-famous-inCanterbury’ gastro pub is gearing up to make this Christmas a memorable one with a unique menu and the cheer turned up several notches. “To use a cycling analogy, it’s been a bit of an uphill slog in the wrong gear for lots of people,” the owners say. “It’s time to freewheel a bit.” For an extra bit of fun, a quiz can be tailor-made for your group, for that added laugh and bonding experience. Fortunately for Canterbury, we’re free to party at Alert Level 2 (as this issue goes to print). Staff ask that everyone attending events has a few basic dos and don’ts outlined before the party starts. Throwing a cocktail party at home is easier than you can imagine. Sort out a few recipes, a few key tools and ingredients, plus a group of friends and you’re set to go. Stock up on ice, fruit for garnishes, fruit juices to add and a few spices also. Here is Metropol’s guide to successful Singapore Slings, Dingbats, Negronis, Martinis, Mojitos, and more.
A cocktail shaker is top of the list, along with a bar spoon, a muddler, and a strainer. A jigger will help you pour exact measures. Make sure you have a decent sized shaker. Ice tongs are also handy.
Glasses
Glassware is a must and there are specific glasses for different cocktails. A Cosmopolitan is served in a Martini glass, whisky in a tumbler and a Negroni in an old fashioned or ‘rock’ glass.
Spirits
Gin is popular at present, but do not forget rum (a sugar cane-based spirit), whisky (grain-based aged spirit), tequila (agavebased spirit) and vodka (a fermented sugar-based spirit). With just these five you can make countless luscious cocktails.
Liqueurs
You also need flavours, and these come from liqueurs such as Triple Sec, Chambord, Blood Orange Cointreau, Kahlua and numerous others. Liqueurs are typically sweet, adding balance to spirits.
Citrus
To balance the sweet, add something sour such as lemon or lime juice. Fresh is best, but you can buy bottled citrus juice at most supermarkets, so that you will always have some on hand.
Spices/Bitters
If you’re a beginner, keep it simple. To add depth to your cocktail, include spices and/or bitters, such as cinnamon, star anise, vanilla, and orange bitters. Angostura Bitters is good to have on hand too.

Keeping up appearances One of the keys to always having a tidy-looking room is plenty of storage. From clean clothes to dirty, make-up to jewellery, or shoes to lingerie, there are gorgeous storage options available that will blend in seamlessly with décor or, if you wish, make a real statement. Not everyone has a walk-in closet so here are some stand-alone suggestions from Metropol.
1.
Lingerie chests
2.
Armoires
3.
Dressers and drawers
Tall and slim, with multiple skinny drawers (up to 12 sometimes), these are useful for all manner of treasures. Try the top two for jewellery, the next two for make-up, and that leaves plenty spare for housing lingerie, bras, socks, and scarves.
These take up serious space, but are ideal for winter bedding, quilts, out of season clothes and shoes, not to mention hiding the laundry basket in. Some come with internal drawers and shelving; others you can design your own storage inside.
Most modern homes have purpose-built wardrobes with shelving and drawer space included. However, if you need more, options include tallboys, lowboys, and Scotch chests to name a few.
No matter what you need, you can trust DGI Morgan Ltd for reliable construction & maintenance solutions. There is no job too big or too small – we do it all.

Dressed to impress Dark sea greens and pale blues come together in a dressing room you’ll never want to leave.
e all dream of a closet to rival Carrie Bradshaw’s, and whilst the fashion icon’s actual wardrobe (clothes, that is) will probably only remain in our dreams, we can attempt to channel her inner fashionista when it comes to designing and styling our dressing rooms. Often, it’s assumed that dark colours will automatically make spaces feel smaller. This is not always the case, and this dressing room is a great example of that. Having the dark wall on the inside of the dressing room actually helps
PAINT Back wall in Resene Dark Slate, Front walls in Resene Hermitage and Resene Destiny, Pendant light in Resene Zumthor, Desk in Resene Destiny, Trims in Resene Sea Fog
to make the space feel bigger than it is as the dark earthy grey green of Resene Dark Slate creates depth. When layered behind lighter colours, such as Resene Zumthor on the top half of the front walls, this sense of space is heightened. The front walls themselves create depth and intrigue with a nod to traditional wainscoting in the harlequin painted pattern in Resene Hermitage and Resene Zumthor. Trims in Resene Sea Fog create a clean contrast and introduce fresh lines to the space – a colour that is echoed in the mirror frame, picture frames and the clothes hanger. Layers of icy blues and grey greens continue inside the dressing room with the desk in Resene Destiny, the round hat boxes in Resene Dark Slate (bottom), Resene Hermitage (middle) and Resene Zumthor (top) and the square boxes in Resene Hammerhead (bottom) and Resene Zumthor (top). The best aspect of this room’s colour palette is that it’s neither feminine nor masculine. Dark and moody but soft and inviting at the same time, it appeals to both parties and will work in any style of home. So, your Mr Big will be just as happy as your inner Carrie Bradshaw.

Outdoor art gallery Art lovers often extend their collections from inside to outside, with gorgeous one-off sculptures the leading choice. Metal, wooden and stone garden ornaments, fountains and sculptures stand proud and tall in gardens large and small. As with all art, when buying you should choose pieces that speak to you, that resonate or add to your garden’s story. Here are some tips from Metropol.
1. Selecting a sculpture:
A sculpture can be contemporary, realistic, native, religious, traditional, personal, abstract, or an heirloom. If you like it, go for it. If you love it, even better.
2. Stick with a style:
The style of your home or garden can influence your choices. A contemporary style home lends itself more to abstract pieces, while lanterns will enhance a Japanese-style garden best.
4.
3. Placement:
Larger abstract pieces can act as a focal point and draw the eye to an area. Smaller sculptures such as a statue surrounded by a mass of flowers will bring your garden closer to you.
Material choices:
Metals are the most durable, while limestone and concrete will weather nicely over time. Bronze, fibreglass and metal offer more design flexibility.

The living room is often the comfort room of the house. Specifically designed for lounging, relaxing, recharging and doing not a lot, this space must be as inviting as possible.
W
hether you’re watching your favourite series or curled up with a book and cuppa, the perfect lounge suite or armchair is essential. Here are a few things to consider:
Fabric:
Selecting the fabric is important when considering the feel and wear. How do you want the furniture to feel? Warm and cosy, or soft and sleek? Hopefully, you will get years worth of use out of your seating, so wear is important. Materials like leather wear beautifully, and over time take on a whole new look and feel. On the other hand, some synthetic fabrics can pill over time and start to look worn out.
Colour:
Depending on your living room design, the colour of your couch or chair can complement or contrast. Beautiful neutral shades are popular with lounge suites, as they are timeless. This is convenient when moving house or repainting, as the piece will still look just as good with the changing background. Greys, browns, and earthy tones will add an extra layer of cosy, while white and cream come with high risk, especially if kids are close!
Feel:
Global Living, Gibbston
When you lie on your couch, do you want to be enveloped into a cloud of cushions or feel supported as you sit up and watch tv? The firmness of your couch or chair will be the ultimate choice in ensuring you are comfortable and enjoy every minute spent laxing out. The little robot that could Celebrating sales of 20 million robot vacuums globally, ECOVACS are the leaders in their field. With a healthy amount of cynicism, Metropol tech guru Ian Knott put their flagship model, the Deebot T9+ to the test.
W
hen the Deebot’s heavy box arrived at my desk, I said to the team at Metropol, “Five minutes at my place and this thing’s going to wish it had never been born.” In our animal-heavy, beachloving household, spotless floors are a concept we gave up on many moons ago. The idea that a small robot vac would survive the night seemed futile at best. Initial set-up of the T9+ couldn’t have been easier. Plug in the charging base station, attach the twin rotating brushes and let the vacuum charge fully. During that time, you download the accompanying Android/iOS app, register the device, connect it to WiFi (and Alexa if you want) and you’re ready to go. Once there’s enough charge you can tell the T9+ to head off and map your house (while cleaning), committing where all your rooms are and furniture is to memory. It’s an impressive thing to watch, especially when you think it’s going to get trapped, but then manages to manoeuvre its way out of trouble. When it’s finished a cleaning cycle, or the dust compartment gets too full, the T9+ returns to the base station and the
contents get forcibly sucked out into a more conventional vacuum cleaner bag. It will then either finish its cycle or stay and recharge. Everything you want the T9+ to do can be controlled from the app - spot cleans, once-overs, or scheduled full house vacuums can all be started remotely and you get to watch an animation of the unit scooting around a virtual map of your home. I’ve got to admit - it’s fairly addictive. Despite my preconceived doubts, I must concede that the suction and cleaning itself is quite impressive. The initial clean certainly had the T9+ wondering what hit it, but with a once-a-day full house cycle, the payload is getting increasingly smaller, the place looks and feels cleaner, and because of the built-in air freshener (blueberry) - it definitely smells cleaner too. The T9+ cleverly knows when the surface changes from carpet to hard flooring, and adjusts the suction power to suit. For those with loads of hardfloor area, it comes with a dedicated mopping attachment that holds detergent and keeps your wood, polished concrete or vinyl flooring in top condition. However, there is some housekeeping to be done before
the T9+ can successfully get on with the actual housekeeping. Any loose cords, such as phone chargers (thicker power cords are fine), shoelaces and the like can’t be left lying around or they’ll get tangled in the roller brush. The machine will then stop, send you a warning and go to sleep until someone untangles it. Shaggy rugs can also be a problem, and it’s best to edit the virtual map to set up an exclusion zone around them. The T9+ initially went around the outside of our shaggy mat, but the second time it managed to find a way onto it and got into a little trouble. Because it almost comes across as a sentient being at times, it’s easy to feel a bit sympathetic when it gets stuck. There are several brands of robot vacs out there, but the ECOVACS Deebots are genuinely impressive.
The excellent T9+ is available at most good vacuum shops, along with spare parts, and usually retails for $1399. Having held off for so long, thinking robot vacs were something you bought when your house was already spotless, I’m absolutely addicted to Suckface (yes, I named it Suckface), the newest member of our family.

A
s I sit in the incredibly comfortable BMW M8 Competition coupe sports seat and admire the beautiful shape of the carbon fibre roofing, I push the ignition button and the V8, 460kW engine roars to life. Putting my foot down, I’m instantly pushed back into the seat as the vehicle accelerates to 100kph in 3.2 seconds, then passes 100… 140… 170 with ease. I’ve driven pretty much every BMW available and roaring around Hampton Downs racetrack, this is the best yet. It’s sexy, it has power, and it was glued to the track. There wasn’t a moment I felt out of control. I had the system in M1 mode, M breaking and sport mode with comfort steering. It made me feel safe but was still adrenaline pumping. M2 mode turns these options off, and I’d be shredding tires and insurance papers in no time, so I didn’t go there. Turn the page and I’m picking up groceries with two teenagers. The rear seats are a squeeze but there’s plenty of room for groceries in the boot. Yes, it can be used as a day-to-day car without being too pretentious. Coming in at $350,400, it has all you could want, including 20” bi-colour alloy rims, BMW gesture control, M sport differential, BMW night vision with person recognition (think military grade tech here), plus a Bowers and Wilkins sound system. The best features were in the drive. It’s subtle but like any beast if you prod it, it has plenty of bite. With a full leather ‘Merino” black interior you can’t help but fall in love with its simplicity and elegance. I would rate this in my top 10 easily for the just the drive, and the top five once you add the luxury elements.

TYRE SAFETY COMES FIRST
4.
With summer road trips just around the corner, it’s imperative to check the health of tyres. Here are some tips, from Tyres 2 Go, to ensure yours are safe and road trip ready.
Check for wear and tear As time goes by, your tyres become increasingly prone to wear and tear. Check your tyres for cracks, cuts or any visual signs of damage. Seeing this early could save you from future major problems. Also, any small stones or sharp objects in the rubber could lead to a puncture so be aware. Check tyre pressure Ensure your tyres all have the required air pressure. Tyres which are under inflated can increase fuel consumption and wear out faster, resulting in less responsive handling which can be dangerous. Check tread depth Make sure your tyres have the required legal 1.5mm tread depth. Tread which is any lower than this results in bad handling and less grip. Wheel alignment Get your wheel alignment checked. Cars which have their wheels out of alignment will cause uneven wear on the tyres as well as vibration. The engine will also have to work harder to keep the car in a straight line resulting in higher fuel consumption. www.tyres2go.net.nz

The new Black Badge Ghost Rolls Royce’s new Black Badge Ghost will launch in New Zealand next year.
I
n the five years since Black Badge became publicly available, it has come to symbolise the pinnacle of bespoke super-luxury vehicles. Black Badge is the highly successful alter ego of RollsRoyce, now representing more than 27 percent of commissions worldwide and is codified by the mathematical symbol that represents a potential infinity, which is found within the motor car’s interior. This graphic, also known as the Lemniscate, was applied to Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking Rolls-Royce-powered Blue Bird K3 hydroplane and the marque’s designers nominated this hallmark for Black Badge
motor cars to reflect their own unrelenting pursuit of power. Rolls-Royce debuted Black Badge with Wraith and Ghost in 2016, followed by Dawn in 2017 then Cullinan in 2019. In October 2021 it debuted what the company describes as “the purest and most technologically advanced Black Badge motor car yet, Black Badge Ghost.” Clients are free to select any of the marque’s 44,000 ‘ready-to-wear’ colours or create their own entirely unique hue, however most (men and women) select the signature black. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
