daughter THE BUILDER’S

That’s where I get my balance. I have absolutely bonded with him and he’s very special. We have beautiful times together,” Lilly says.

One can only imagine the positive mentoring and empowerment gained from a grandmother figure such as Lilly. In her 62 years, the matriarch behind Cooper Developments has more than proved her mettle in the male-dominated field of property development, staring down business challenges that would send others, with less grit, running for cover.

Born and bred in Christchurch, Lilly was educated at Rangi Ruru Girls’ School. Her father was a builder, so bricks and mortar, constructions and land always loomed large in her life.

On leaving school, Lilly swiftly made her way into property, working for property investor Stephen Collins, the man behind

the expansion of Harcourts.

Aged 19, she made her first property deal - a sizeable purchase of 14 inner city houses from a Nelson based vendor.

After successfully negotiating a six-month delayed settlement, the day came, and Lilly promptly sold all 14 properties, marking the beginning of her long and successful career.

Property development isn’t for the faint-hearted. On 21 February, 2011, Lilly’s purchase of an iconic Sydenham retail space went unconditional. The next day, Christchurch was hit by the devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake.

Faced with the enforced closing of all CBD retail precincts for an unspecified length of time, Lilly and her daughter, Caroline, set to work in planning The Colombo’s new future.

The vision was to create a beautiful and safe space for beleaguered families to de-stress and remember what enjoyment felt like.

In times of uncertainty, The Colombo became the people’s beacon of certainty.

Caroline was 23 at the time, and was working in commercial sales and leasing, after having recently returned from studying design in London. Her di erent ideas as to what a boutique retail space should o er its community, along with her vitality and creativity, was just what The Colombo needed.

The mother and daughter collaboration worked so well that it still continues.

“The business is very much a family operation, and I love it that I have young people around me. All my sta are young. They keep me stimulated and up with everything,” Lilly says.

A few years ago, Lilly faced one of her most daunting challenges when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but in typical Lilly fashion, she did what she does best; she faced it and fought back, finding strength and resilience through her passion for her work.

Rolleston Fields is the latest project for Cooper Developments, with its subsidiary company, Tennyson 55, working closely with Selwyn District Council to provide a stunning complex in the heart of Rolleston.

Designed by Thom Craig Architects and IKON Architects, the multi-milliondollar development comprises 10 buildings, with four currently under construction.

When completed, the development will bring to the local community a retail precinct, a covered weekend farmers’ market, a food hall, a health and wellbeing centre, bars and eateries, and an entertainment precinct.

“I believe in synergy and what can be achieved in business through synergy,” says Lilly. “I love seeing happy tenants, smiles on faces, people walking their dogs through our buildings. The Colombo’s recent Dog Fashion Show brought in 600 people. The whole event was free. There was so much laughter and enjoyment. That’s worth everything. That’s where I find my happiness,” she laughs.”

“I believe in the causes and the people. If I can help them achieve their fund-raising goals, then I have ful lled my community responsibility.”

He has spent some 40 years in the real estate industry, becoming an undisputed auctioneer legend. Today in what can only be termed semi-retirement, Phil McGoldrick is seen far more often bringing down the metaphorical hammer at charity fundraisers. Metropol writer Cheryl Colley spoke to him about his career and his philanthropic work.

“I

started work in the hotel trade,” says Phil. “I soon realised that with the hours required this was no game for a family man.

Instead, I went to a Bob Jones property seminar and soon fell into a job with a local Ashburton real estate firm. It was very simple to get into real estate back in the early 1980s compared with all the regulations of today.”

Real estate roles in Tauranga and finally Christchurch followed. Throughout this time Phil dabbled in the sales technique that was to become his forte – auctions. “I had seen other agents running auctions and was not particularly impressed. I felt there had to be a better way than the very pedestrian approach that was invariably taken. I did some formal training, went to auctioneering competitions and worked hard to convert real estate firms to auction marketing. Now there can be 3000 auctions a year through Harcourts in Christchurch.”

Phil admits it does take a certain personality type to be an auctioneer. “You need to be a bit of a showman as an auction really is a type of theatre. You

also have to be able to read people, be a consummate negotiator and of course be able to persuade and sell your product.”

It is these attributes that now make Phil so sought after as an auctioneer at charity fundraising events.

“There were small beginnings to what has now become such an important part of my life. I would call auctions for school fundraising, local trivial pursuit nights and sports groups, but in 1994 I did my first big gig with the Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind (now known as Blind Low Vision NZ). It’s hard for me to get my head around, but I have called probably about 500 charity auctions since then – around 25 a year.”

This all begs the question “Why”? “I believe in the causes and the people. If I can help them achieve their fund-raising goals, then I have fulfilled my community responsibility. The Canterbury community has been very good to me and my family over the years – this is my opportunity to give back. I don’t see it as work and it’s also very enjoyable even if I might quite like a few more weekends to myself! You can’t simply turn up on the night. There is a lot of

expectation on you so you have to prepare and really know everything there is to know about the items you are auctioning.”

The organisations that have benefited from Phil’s inimitable and immensely successful auctioneering style are many and varied – Koru Care, Child Cancer, Maia Foundation, The Court Theatre, Braintree Trust, Cancer Society, Canterbury Charitable Hospital Trust, Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, Brainwave Trust Aotearoa, City Mission, Cholmondeley Children’s Centre – to name probably not all of them. Phil says he has helped raise at least $1 million a year since he began this philanthropic work, but that could very well be an underestimate.

“I think my role is the easy one, the visible one and the one that undeservedly gets the credit. The credit really should go to the event organisers who gather together all the auction items. That’s the di cult part.”

I expect those various organisers whom Phil has worked with would say he is being far too modest, and that he really is a legend.

A musical phenomenon that celebrates ‘life lived to its limits’, RENT is taking centre stage as The Court Theatre’s summer musical.

This uplifting and equally heartbreaking story celebrates love and friendships that are brave in the face of danger.

The ground-breaking production follows a group of struggling artists living in New York City. Fall in love with the complex characters as they chase their dreams, all against a backdrop of poverty, looming gentrification, and the AIDS crisis of the 1990s. Sharing an important message of always choosing love, especially in the face of hate, you will be captivated and inspired.

High-energy musical numbers, including Seasons of Love and La Vie Bohème, will have you grooving along in your seat.

RENT was a late addition to The Court Theatre’s Ryman Healthcare 2022 season.

As Covid-19 a ected the theatre’s programming for the third year in a row, The Court decided to add RENT as its summer musical.

Director Lara Macgregor was thrilled with the decision.

“Surely there’s no better time in our post-Covid-19 history to celebrate actors, creativity, and lifelong friendships,” she says.

MILITARY MOVES

The 2022 event will screen on 19 and 20 November at Cinemas Christchurch, Movie Max Digital Cinemas Timaru, Regent Cinema Ashburton, Silky Otter Cinemas Wigram and Town Hall Cinemas Rangiora. This show is the first from The Tattoo’s new, and first non-military, creative director, New Zealand-born Michael Braithwaite, who grew up in Christchurch.

Featuring more than 900 performers, it promises to be a spectacular combination of music, dance, and military precision from some of the world’s leading armed forces and cultural performers from the UK, Mexico, The United States, New Zealand (the New Zealand Army Band, and The Pipes and Drums of Christchurch City), Australia (Brisbane Boys College Pipes and Drums), Switzerland, Germany, and Canada.

This is also the first show under the Tattoo’s bold new brand ethos, which embraces military tradition and combines it with exciting innovations and contemporary touches.

Acts include the iconic The Top Secret Drum Corps; the colourful carnival energy of 100 performers from Banda Monumental de Mexico and the renowned Highland Divas, in their Tattoo debut, showcasing their eclectic repertoire including the Folk Music of Ireland, Scotland, and New Zealand.

If you are seeking unique charm and elegance there is a solution – Eliza’s Manor on Bealey Avenue, built back in 1861. Each of the manor’s eight boutique bedrooms is individually decorated with a mix of historic and contemporary touches from their wallpapers to their bedding, from their stained glass windows to their chandeliers. There are four deluxe king rooms and four superior queen rooms. The bathrooms are a joy to behold, especially in the king rooms with their designer baths, as well as huge showers. Of course there are all the luxury detail touches you would want in the fine toiletries and the tea and co ee making facilities.

The treats at Eliza’s don’t stop with the accommodation. There is a cedar barrel sauna available for hotel guests, and then there is the food for which Eliza’s is renowned. A new spring/summer menu has recently been introduced featuring local produce and fresh seasonal flavours brought together in interesting and delicious combinations.

Paua and smoked pork hock with filo pastry and hot sauce crumble, or smoked mackerel croquettes with pear chutney, or ricotta and shallot tortellini with roast onion brodo, speak volumes of the creativity of the chefs at Eliza’s.

The restaurant at this five Gold Star Qualmark hotel at 82 Bealey Avenue is also open to casual diners.

You may be expecting visitors over the summer holiday period. Finding somewhere a little different for them to stay is not always the easiest of tasks.

Kaikōura is a popular destination, for a day, a week, or longer during the holiday season. From the sea to the mountains, and everywhere in between, this small coastal town offers visitors so many options for recreational pursuits.

Indoors and outdoors, on land and sea, opportunities abound, north of Christchurch, approximately two-anda-half hours’ drive by car. Whether you are self-driving, taking the Coastal Pacific train or travelling on a bus between destinations, a stop o in Kaikōura will not disappoint.

Breathtaking views will stop you in your tracks, especially during the colder months when snow covers the lofty peaks of the Seaward Kaikōura’s, and the white-tipped waves of the Pacific Ocean roll in to the Kaikōura Peninsula.

Not many places can have you on top of a mountain in the morning, whale watching

or dolphin / seal swimming in the afternoon and then taking in a gorgeous sunset while feasting upon fresh seafood from the very ocean you are sitting beside.

“Kaikōura is going from strength to strength,” says mayor Craig Mackle, commenting on the opening of a new $35 million hotel on Kaikōura’s waterfront.

From Edwardian and gothic architecture to wildlife, surf beaches to street art and culinary delights – you’ll find it all in Dunedin. The diverse, eclectic city is full of wonders, all waiting to be discovered. Next time you are looking to take the family for an adventure or escape for a romantic weekend for two, be sure to put Dunedin on your radar. Here are a few reasons why…

St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool

DISCOVER THE NATURAL WONDERS

Dunedin’s natural attractions are breathtaking and postcardworthy to say the least. Tunnel Beach with its rugged and grand features makes for an incredible walk for the whole family. The Otago Peninsula is another marvel, with fascinating formations such as the Pyramids in Okia Reserve, just a short detour o the track. The many beaches nearby are popular with local surfers and wildlife spotters. They also hold stunning discoveries, such as the sea arches of Doctors Point. These are matched in magnificence by the dramatic surrounds of the Organ Pipes or Sutton Salt Lake. You can’t go wrong when hopping in the car and exploring the coastal wonders in the area.

GLIMPSE THE WILDLIFE

While New Zealand doesn’t have much as far as exotic wildlife, what it does have are some incredible aquatic animals and birds. Dunedin is home to many. Otago Peninsula is an exceptional area of bio-diversity where you can spot rare yellow-eyed penguins and Hooker sea lions sunbathing on the beaches. Witness the majestic Northern Royal Albatross at the world’s only mainland breeding colony. Watch in awe as adorable little blue penguins come into shore from a day of fishing. Find your own spots to watch from, or opt for a more adventurous approach with a 4WD or wildlife tour to get you up close and personal.

A TOUCH OF CULTURE

A UNESCO ‘City of Literature’, Dunedin is also a wonderful destination for couples, or groups of friends wanting to be ‘wowed’ by the wonderful art and architecture. The awardwinning Otago Museum displays local and international exhibitions, alongside its tropical butterfly forest and 360-degree planetarium. Stroll the tranquil, other-worldly Lan Yuan, the southern hemisphere’s only truly authentic Chinese Scholar’s Garden. Indulge your curiosity at the Museum of Natural Mystery, before seeking out the city’s many other cultural treasures. Art bu s will be delighted to discover the galleries and studios throughout the wider city. And be sure to also explore Dunedin’s rich literary heritage.

Home buyers today tend to be prudent, and in order to sell a home they need to be motivated to love your property, says Annette Pendergast of Mike Pero Real Estate. “Advantages taken in preparation and presentation can work to minimise the time the home is on the market, while achieving the best sale price. “You want to ensure that you property looks like the best value for money, and creates the best impression

to your potential buyers,” she adds.

“In advance of listing a home for sale, take the opportunity to make repairs and freshen up tired areas to have both interior and exterior appealing and welcoming.”

With a visit to the property, Annette can run through recommendations on potential improvements, being mindful of the photography and the overall display of your home when marketing to sell. She also encourages you to compare how the competition is presenting for sale, and she

can keep you informed as to local property sale prices as they may influence the potential value of your home. Annette is an experienced agent at the Mike Pero Real Estate Papanui o ce.

Forced fair pay Build your brand

Whether you’re a new business or have been around for a while, having an easily identifiable, relevant brand is key for marketing and business success.

Having a brand that doesn’t reflect who you are can hinder you from getting new customers through the door.

Recently I worked with a new client who felt like their brand didn’t reflect them, or position them to speak to their ideal customer.

I looked at their existing brand and their online presence and found this to be true. Their existing brand had a name that didn’t accurately reflect their service, the logo/colours didn’t represent how they wanted to be seen, and their website didn’t immediately tell their audience what they o ered their clients.

We swiftly worked with them to discover the essence of their business, how they are positioned in the market, and what makes them di erent. We then used key branding principles to generate a new brand that they are very happy with.

On average, it takes seven interactions with your brand for someone to remember it. For example, if you’re using social media and posting twice a week, make sure you consistently post twice weekly.

Maintaining a strong brand alongside a consistent strategy is also a key for your success.

If you feel like you’re not reaching your ideal audience, or simply need a brand refresh, have a chat to me.

The Government has come out and decided that fair pay agreements (FPA) are going to be forced into legislation using their majority, and anyone opposing their view has been ignored. National has come out and said that they will repeal this legislation if they win the next election.

Labour would have you believe that there are certain segments of society or classes of workers who are being exploited to such an extent, that despite being free to join a union and be part of a collective agreement, that is not enough protection, and their industry should be regulated by a FPA. If the unions and employers cannot agree on wage rates, then the Employment Relations Authority will decide what a fair rate of pay is.

National would have you believe that fair pay agreements are not needed; that they are yet another cost to employers; that unions currently exist for the benefit of their members which includes negotiating pay rates; that if you drive up the cost of labour that simply drives up the costs of products and services, which drives up inflation, and in particular it is hugely undemocratic for 10 percent of workers to force 90 percent of workers into a fair pay agreement.

Personally I support the increases in the minimum wage that Labour has brought in during the last two terms because that is directly putting money into the hands of the most vulnerable. I don’t support 90 percent of workers (in specific industries) losing the right to opt out of an FPA, despite the need of Labour to keep the union movement on side for the election next year. So FPA’s are most definitely an election issue now.

UP YOUR LOOK

Spring is the prime time to spice up your eye make-up and match it to your outfit.

Atip from professionals when playing with colourful make-up is to keep the rest of your face simple and natural to not distract from bold eyeshadows. Also don’t be afraid to play with shimmer. Humans are simple creatures, anything shiny will draw attention to you and your outfit of the day.

TAKING INSPIRATION FROM RECENT SPRING COLLECTIONS SEEN ON NEW YORK, MILAN AND LONDON RUNWAYS, METROPOL SELECTS MAKE-UP MATCHES FOR THIS SEASON.

Big into neutrals? Often find your eyes scanning shops or your wardrobe for beiges and oatmeal? Pair with simple matte lilac eyeshadow.

If dark denim washes are fundamental to your personal style, pick up an acid green eyeshadow to elevate the outfit.

If you like wearing clean white outfits, cobalt blue is your eyeshadow match.

Age and stage have a major impact on scalp and hair health. During our lifetime, we pass through six key stages: infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, middle years, and senior years.

Hair health is often overlooked as we move through life. We might experience conditions like dandru , excess oil, and hair loss, but often we just live with it,” says trichology expert Nicky James-Baird. Nicky and Jodene Fendall are co-owners of Holistic Hair and have spent years formulating products to combat hair concerns. “Scalp and hair health is a function of our overall wellbeing,” says Jodene. “Topical products aren’t a complete cure, but they can make a big di erence to restoring shiny, healthy hair.”

Age-defying hair tips: INFANCY AND CHILDHOOD

Children’s scalps need to be treated with care. Use a mild shampoo once to twice a week. Some infants experience cradle cap which requires an oil to remove the build-up of skin cells.

Recommendations: Holistic Hair Pure Shampoo for cleansing and Scalp Treatment Oil for dryness.

ADOLESCENCE

Teenagers often produce excess oil associated with hormone changes. Too much oil can be a breeding ground for fungus that causes dandru . The best defence is to keep the scalp clean.

Recommendations: Holistic Hair Sensitive Shampoo for cleansing and Sensitive Conditioner for the mid to ends of the hair, with Herbal Finishing Rinse Concentrate to treat the scalp.

ADULTHOOD

Pregnancy can cause changes in both hair texture and growth. Following birth some women experience hair loss.

Recommendations: Holistic Hair Pure Shampoo and Conditioner combined with Scalp Treatment Oil.

MIDDLE YEARS

Changes in hormone levels, sometimes associated with menopause, can result in

thinning hair as well as dryness.

Recommendations: Holistic Hair Quinoa Colour Protect or Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner to nourish the hair with Essential Scalp Spray or Scalp Treatment Oil for scalp health.

OLDER AGE

Thinning hair and hair loss are typical in these years, so using gentle products is important.

Recommendations: Holistic Hair Pure or Sensitive Shampoo and Conditioner.

Atrade certified manufacturing jeweller, Hannah has been making and repairing jewellery for two decades. She loves her work, but the artist within has long yearned to unleash her creativity in her own business.

One night, over a few glasses of wine, the friends hit on a name – Rocks O Artisan Jewellery – and the business was born from that moment. “The name is a little cheeky, like us,” Hannah and Tara say.

Together they make for a dynamic duo, with Hannah as the maker and Tara as the marketing guru, thanks to Tara’s many years in sales roles.

“Our mission is to make distinctive and unique pieces that can be worn every day. People want di erent jewellery nowjewellery that speaks to them - who they are.”

Mabé and Akoya pearls, topaz, rubies and black diamonds often feature in Hannah’s works, while her “kinetic” pieces boast quirky movable components that the wearer can have fun with.

Future plans to custommake on request for niche boutiques and introduce the jewellery into galleries, promises an exciting expansion of this small but mighty business.

curly hair care

Time to embrace your natural locks and try the curly girl method. Here are some tips from Metropol:

IN THE SHOWER:

With curly hair, moisture is key. Avoid washing your hair too frequently as those magic oils you produce are essential for curls. When you do wash your hair, make sure to use a sulfate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner combo which boasts a natural oil base. When conditioning brush your hair out with a wide toothed comb. Once a week use a clarifying shampoo and swap your regular conditioner for a deep conditioning mask.

SLEEP

To preserve the beauty of your newly resurrected curls sleep on a silk pillowcase and tie your hair at the top of your head.

DRYING

For best heatless results, air dry. For the most styled results, use a hair dryer on low with a di user attachment. For the most convenient option, lightly dry by scrunching hair upwards with a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel.

STYLING

You will want to hear the squelch when you squeeze the excess water from your hair. The squelch is a sound that only graces those with the perfect amount of conditioner. Next use your preferred styling gel/cream/ mousse for the mid to end lengths. Finish by coating with a small amount of hair oil to prevent frizz.

BEING sun smart

The delightful blossoming of tulips and daffodils comes along with an increase in harmful UV rays. While it’s important to wear sunscreen every day of the year, spring is a good time to remind ourselves to keep our skin safe from the sun.

WEAR SUNSCREEN

Not just any sunscreen, make sure it is SPF30 or higher, broad spectrum and check out sunscreen brands on Consumer NZ to see if they measure up to their claims. Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and re-apply every two hours or after being in water.

WEAR A HAT

A hat that covers your head, ears and neck is ideal. Get inspration for an envious hat from Rose’s luxe purple hat in the Titanic. Hat hair is an easy sacrifice to make to ensure your scalp stays scorch-free. A burnt scalp is a one-way ticket to sunstroke and a flaky week.

SHADE

Even with the best SPF sunscreen, our skin can only handle so much time in direct sunlight. Make sure to find a shady spot to cool o regularly on days where you’re going to to outside alot or bring a chic umbrella or sun tent the next time you go to the beach.

keratin

The key to achieving the strongest benefits from keratin is by using keratin that is biologically active which can be found in sheep’s wool. The best sheep to use are New Zealand grown, with our clean, open field, pasture fed sheep farming practices.

When, Natalie Harrison (pictured), was losing handfuls of hair and had brittle and painful nails, she saw major improvements from using keratin pills. Thus in 2020 she began the Kiri10 brand.

Kiri10 supplement capsules, Glow, are carefully created with keraGEN-IV™.

Healthy levels of this Functional Keratin® support the growth of strong hair follicles, anchoring each strand deeply into the scalp. The keraGEN-IV™ in Kiri-Glow may also help promote tight, vibrant skin by protecting cells that create the outer layer of the skin, support strong, robust nails, and protect against oxidative stress.

Overall, Kiri-Glow supports the health of supple skin, luxurious hair, and strong nails by providing an excellent source of key building blocks and nutrients, says Natalie.

From increased bone density to better muscle mass and heart health, exercise is important for women who are 40 and beyond.

TAKE YOUR TIME

For many women, the 40s marks a transition from primary caregiver to re-prioritising yourself. If you have been less active during the last few or fifteen years, it’s important to acknowledge that your body needs time to recondition and strengthen.

Expecting to jump straight back into your old routine from 10 years ago is setting yourself up for frustration and possible injury.

FIND MOVEMENT YOU LOVE

The number one key to integrating exercise into your life is to find movement you enjoy. Don’t be fooled into claims like “the best exercise for women over 40”.

The best movement for you in the long term is the one that you enjoy. Take your time and explore di erent options. What you loved when you were 20 is often di erent from the movement your body enjoys at 40.

ACCEPT CHANGES AND SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE

From the age of 40, the female body experiences several hormonal changes that go well beyond hot flushes. Hormones also have an impact on soft tissues such as tendons and ligaments and even your pelvic floor. This means that some women will experience new symptoms they have not felt before, ranging from hip pain to leakage. Just because it’s hormonal, doesn’t mean you have to surrender and

accept these symptoms. Find a professional who understands women’s health and exercise and let them guide you back to a movement routine that works for you.

FOOD brain

The BrainTree Wellness Centre is an innovative, world-first facility in Ōtautahi-Christchurch that supports people living with neurological conditions to live well in the community. Come in for a visit, we are open from 8:30am to 5pm weekdays with a café.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS FROM METROPOL:

BLACKCURRANTS

Deemed a ‘superfood’, these are high in antioxidants, including vitamin C, and can help boost your immune system. Blackcurrants are rich in an omega-6 fatty acid called gamma-linoleic acid.

EGGS

Rich in B vitamins and a nutrient called choline, eggs can help to slow cognitive decline and deficiencies such as depression and dementia. Choline helps create the neurotransmitters responsible for mood and memory.

FATTY FISH

Trout, salmon, and sardines all contain large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Sixty

percent of your brain is composed of fat containing omega 3s, essential in the production of brain and nerve cells.

FRUITS

Certain fruits including oranges, capsicums, guava, kiwi fruit, tomatoes, and strawberries, contain high amounts of vitamin C, which helps prevent brain cells from becoming damaged.

LEAFY GREENS

Broccoli, spinach, and kale contain various nutrients such as vitamin K, lutein, folate, and beta carotene. Vitamin K helps with the formation of fat inside brain cells and has been seen to improve memory.

BE PART OF THE LARGEST GENETIC INVESTIGATION INTO EATING DISORDERS IN THE WORLD

If you are aged 16 years or over and have experienced an eating disorder at some point in your life, you are invited to participate in this groundbreaking research. You can take part from your home – the study involves an online survey and a do-it-yourself “spit kit” to provide a saliva sample for DNA.

Study researchers will analyse DNA from saliva samples to pinpoint specific genes associated with eating disorders. This will allow researchers to identify genetic factors that determine why some people experience eating disorders, while others do not, and why some people living with eating disorders respond to certain treatments, while others do not.

The New Zealand arm of the Eating Disorders Genetics Initiative (EDGI) is run by researchers from the Department of Pathology and the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Otago, Christchurch.

EDGI aims to accelerate discovery in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder. If neither you, nor any immediate blood relative, has experienced an eating disorder, you may also be eligible to enrol in a control group.

Help the team reach their target of 3500 New Zealanders involved today.

For more information, visit edgi.nz

MAKING ME EAT?

Studies estimate that 2-3.5 percent of the population su er from this disorder, compared to approximately one percent for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. BED is characterised by an excessive intake of food, without regular purging or other compensatory behaviours (such as vomiting, laxative use, or excessive exercise).

Food cravings and binge-eating behaviours are often described by women su ering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and evidence is growing that there is, indeed, some association between PCOS and BED.

So, what is PCOS? Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that a ects up to 15 percent of reproductive age people with ovaries. The syndrome involves having high levels of male sex hormones (such as testosterone) circulating in the body, which can lead to undesired features such as acne and excessive body hair. Additionally, as the name would suggest, characteristic cysts may be observed on the ovaries.

People with PCOS are at increased risk for reproductive problems and infertility, as well as metabolic features such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. To add to that burden, those with PCOS are at greater risk of depression and anxiety.

Binge eating can be associated with several contributing factors, including

anxiety, depression, and poor body image, all of which are implicated in PCOS. In a large study of PCOS su erers, more than a third of healthy weight or overweight participants, and the majority of participants with obesity report binge eating behaviours. Given that people with PCOS are seemingly primed to su er from anxiety or depression, binge-eating behaviours, and metabolic factors that can lead to weight gain, it is cruelly ironic that the frontline treatment for PCOS is weight management.

Unsurprisingly, many people with PCOS find this di cult to achieve, reasons including tiredness, embarrassment about appearance, and feeling that their e orts are fruitless.

Controlling weight in PCOS may be medically indicated to reduce longer-term health concerns like diabetes and heart disease and to address fertility problems, but too often healthcare professionals prescribe weight loss without screening for the presence of binge eating.

Any intervention that addresses medically necessary weight management needs to screen for the presence of binge eating and ensure that whatever is prescribed does not further perpetuate or even exacerbate binge eating.

Fortunately, a simple screener does exist (the BEDS-7) that consists of 7 quick questions. A balance may need to be struck between achieving a healthy stable weight,

and the mental health and quality of life of people with PCOS and BED.

If you have ever experienced regular binge-eating episodes, we encourage you to visit edgi.nz to learn more about our genetic study of eating disorders.

Eating disorders don’t discriminate and can strike individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. We hope to enrol participants from all backgrounds so that we can fully understand both genetic and environmental factors that influence eating disorders.

SYMPTOMS OF BINGE EATING DISORDER

• Eating far more food than most people would in a similar time period and in similar circumstances

• Feeling out of control of your eating during a binge

• Binge eating at least twice a week for three months

• Not routinely trying to "undo" binging with extreme actions such as purging, fasting, or over-exercising

• At least three of the following:

- Eating faster than normal

- Eating past feeling full

- Eating a lot when not hungry

- Eating in secret

- Feeling guilty after a binge

THIS SUMMER GET MOVING

We wait all year for warm days in the sun, and finally, summer is just around the corner. With these warmer days comes the joy of getting outdoors, moving our bodies, and feeling strong.

As we start to move our bodies more and return to sporting activities that we haven’t done since last summer, niggles and pains can surface. An important rule to remember is: don’t push into the niggle. If there is anything not feeling quite right, get ahead of the game and get it checked out before that niggle becomes something you can’t ignore.

Whether you’re picking up from where you left o at the end of the season or if you’ve tried something new over the cooler months, it’s worth making sure you’re moving in a way that not only maximises your e ort but also doesn’t cause a problem down the track.

Now is the best time, before the season picks up, to be proactive in your fitness

journey and get the most from your exercise regime.

Your Muscle People Physio can assess how you are moving and then make recommendations with the goal of preventing musculoskeletal injuries and maximising your exercise program.

Muscle People also continue to o er its incredibly beneficial Dynamic Spines programme. Designed to help strengthen the core, this supports the strength, mobility, and healing of the spine.

Neck, upper back, and lower back pain as well as core and postural weaknesses are all addressed within Dynamic Spines physiotherapist-led therapeutic exercises.

clients get from pain to performance.

With their combined knowledge and longevity in the health space, you can be assured you are in great hands when dealing with painful and hard-to-treat injuries.

Whatever your choice of movement this summer, be it tennis, cycling, cricket, swimming, or running after the kids, be sure to get your body ready for an active season in the sun.

salad

DAYS

Cool, crisp summer salads are an ideal way to make the most of summer fruits.

Melons, berries, cherry tomatoes, cherries, and stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines, plums and avocados combine beautifully with fresh, seasonal produce to create vibrant medleys of texture and flavour. Down through the decades some combinations, such as the Waldorf salad, have become classics, while others are just up to an individual’s personal tastes. Favourites include strawberries with avocado, feta and French vinaigrette, mixed lettuce salad with asparagus, raspberries and raspberry vinaigrette, and chicken Caesar salad with sliced nectarines. HERE ARE A COUPLE OF RECIPES TO TRY:

Peach and prosciutto salad

Peaches pair wonderfully well with the likes of prosciutto, ham and even bacon, for a light summery salad. Try creamy bocconcini and fresh basil leaves, or with your favourite salad greens.

INGREDIENTS

4 ripe peaches, sliced thinly, fresh or lightly grilled

85g prosciutto, ham or bacon, in bite-sized pieces

225g cherry bocconcini, feta or camembert cheese (optional)

Favourite lettuce, and herbs to taste

1/2 cup toasted walnuts or pecans

2 Tbsp red wine vinegar

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

Salt & pepper to taste

METHOD

1

Waldorf Salad

A Waldorf salad is usually made of fresh apples, celery, and walnuts, dressed in mayonnaise, and traditionally served on a bed of lettuce as an appetiser or a light meal. Add grapes for a juicy twist.

INGREDIENTS

2 Tbsp mayonnaise

2 Tbsp plain yoghurt

1 Tbsp lemon juice

1 cup halved red grapes

1 cup chopped apples

1 cup sliced celery

1/4 cup chopped parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup walnuts, toasted

Lettuce for serving

METHOD

In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, yoghurt, and lemon juice. 1

Add grapes, apple, celery, and parsley and fold until just combined. 2

Season with salt and pepper. Top with walnuts and serve over lettuce. 3

In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Arrange the remaining ingredients on a platter. 2

Drizzle on the dressing and serve.

Good times

Dubbed ‘the best little local’, an English pub vibe in a century-old building is alive with friendly faces.

Its classic timber flooring weaves through alcoves, tables, booths, leaners, couches, and the sunroomnook, through to two outside decks, at Merivale Sprig and Fern Tavern on St Albans Street.

“Between Craig and I, there’s always one of us here, it’s really important to us we get to know our regulars,” says co-owner Wendy Roigard.

“And you’ve got to take your best mate to the pub, so dogs are welcome on a lead. Sparge, our golden retriever mascot (pictured) is named from a step in the brew process.

Wendy, hailing from the brewing world, says Sprig & Fern’s Nelson brewery provides 18 taps featuring a mix of beers and ciders - many

a perfect pairing with the fresh, exciting menu.

“We also love our gins, and have 21 boutique brands on our expanding shelves,” she adds.

More than a pub, there are games for children, free WiFi, and even a cosy library corner with bookmarks to earmark a page for another visit – which is easy when it feels like home.

With a fifth-year milestone on 15 November, and incidentally Wendy and Craig’s 1st anniversary as owners, it’s time to join in the celebrations.

For details visit their Facebook page.

sugar-free and keto options.

here are many ways you can decorate that promote happiness, including with colours, textures and even room layouts. Your home is a haven – a safe place to relax, recharge and rest. The way we decorate our homes can affect our mood. 1 Decorate with uplifting artwork, such as scenic beauty landscapes, or anything that makes you smile. 2 Add a few touches of yellow for positivity. 3 Add curves for feelings of cosiness, softness and comfort. 4 Create a space for long lunches and leisurely dinners, to enjoy with loved ones. 5 Make the cocktail hour setup permanent, on a bar trolley or a kitchen shelf. 6 Add personalised details to your bedroom that make you smile first thing in the morning and last thing at night. 7 Let the light in where you can. Dark and dreary rooms can bring you down. 8 Make a memory wall, with framed photos of special life moments with special people. home & living P: 0800 MGLASS (0800 645277) E: info@morganglass.co.nz | www.morganglass.co.nz Your trusted & experienced glazing team » Glass Repairs & Replacement » Glazing for New Builds » Insurance Claims » Retro-Fit Double Glazing » Commercial Glass & Store Fronts » Supply & Install Cat or Dog Doors » Glass Windbreaks, Shelters & Pool Fences » Glass Canopies » Frameless Glass Showers » Glass Splashbacks » Custom Made Mirror Glass » Glass Balustrades » Emergency Callout & Board up Service » Joinery Modifications & Repairs » Windscreens & Auto Glass HEAD OF THE GLASS

long term rentals vs. holiday homes

The lack of long-term houses for tenants is a hot topic. In a bid to address this, councils including Queenstown Lakes District Council have changed legislation to discourage property owners renting short term by having higher rates for properties let as holiday homes and requiring owners to obtain resource consent to operate holiday home letting. This comes at a significant cost to property owners.

Colleen Topping, director and owner of Home & Co Property Management in Wanaka says, “I have seen many property

owners switch from holiday home rentals to long term rentals because of the erratic cash flow that accompanies holiday letting.

It is either feast or famine. Great if your house was booked for Christmas / New Year, A&P Show weekend and Warbirds Over Wanaka but what of the in-between times? Long term rentals translate to an even cash flow. Once your property is rented you are almost guaranteed of a steady income.”

Thirdly, with holiday homes, do you know who made the booking? Is it really Mrs X from an upmarket suburb or is it for her son and his delightful party friends?

There is a lack of guest scrutiny on many booking sites. Holiday homeowners have complained about a lack of accountability when things get damaged or go missing and the costs can mount.

In summary, the three “Cs” – council, cashflow and credibility favour choosing long term rentals over holiday letting.

Only available online, the Emma Comfort Mattress has been engineered in Germany using the highest quality foam. As a medium-firm mattress, it’s an ideal choice for those who can’t decide between a soft or firm feel.

There are two internal layers; the first is 5cm of ‘Airgocell’ contouring foam – an open pore foam that allows 50 percent more air to circulate than your normal memoryfoam. The base layer is 20cm of HRX high-density foam, also open pore and with support zones so that support is applied where your body needs it most.

The ability for air to flow through

the foam allows for a cooler sleep during those hot summer nights. Available in single to super king, the mattress includes ‘Zero Motion’ technology that prevents even the most restless of sleepers from disturbing their partner

THE VERDICT

I slept pretty soundly on the mattress, and it reminded me of the firmness of beds in good hotels, but my wife couldn’t get a good sleep on it at all. It’s in cases like ours that thankfully the mattress comes with a 120-night, money back guarantee, with all returns being donated to charity. That sounds like a win-win to me

TOP TREE TIPS

Shade in outdoor space is critical once that temperature creeps up. Our trees: native, ornamental, or fruiting, create the urban forest and play a bigger part of the picture than you might think.

There are several benefits to utilising a tree canopy, rather than something constructed, for shelter. A deciduous tree will let the light and warmth you want into the house as the canopy thins for autumn. In the hot months, the transpiration of trees cools the air around them. A row of trees will shade a paved area, cooling the ground itself for bare feet, plus minimising that heat radiation upwards that can feel like the last straw on a sweltering February day.

People often look for a wind break, and a tree that has been cropped to encourage low growth creates a great wind shadow. Trees in a garden setting are the quintessential Kiwi dream and are a big part of

the urban forest.

For expert advice in both residential and commercial management of trees, you can’t do better than asking The Tree People.

“We combine the science and art of tree care with technical experience, passion, advanced equipment, and sustainable practices,” says Co-owner Raoni Hammer.

The team also trim trees for powerline safety and o er emergency services. Sustainability is central to their approach. “We use electric chainsaws, biodegradable chainsaw lubrication, and silt traps to prevent runo into sensitive riparian areas. We insulate our chipper to reduce noise pollution.”, says Raoni.

Their website is packed with advice on tree care and Raoni says “Book us in for a free consultation about how to get the most out of your tree canopy and garden this summer.”

www.thetreepeople.nz

With the recent introduction of Christchurch City Council water usage rates, the team has been thinking of ways to make your water go further.

“When you are setting your garden up for summer, start with how you can use less water in the dryer months,” says Raoni. “We advise that you don’t plant until autumn and choose an environmentally appropriate species.

“Also, increase soil quality to retain moisture by mulching, composting, or using Biochar, and allowing healthy leaf drop to remain. Water first thing or after sundown, and think about rainwater collection systems.”

Be it barbecues or backyard cricket, gardening or grooming the spoodle, we are in our backyards as often as the weather allows.

home work

If last year taught us anything, it’s that is is a good idea to be prepared with a functional home office space.

Whether you were unable to cross everything o your to-do list at work or perhaps a global pandemic has suddenly made remote working the norm for you, having a dedicated home o ce zone where you can get stuck in and focus makes it much easier to pick up where you left o .

In an open-plan space, colour is a great tool for delineating areas for di erent tasks or uses while also connecting them to keep your look cohesive.

Grey-toned greens are currently among the most popular hues available. Given that they’re both contemporary and relaxing, variations like Resene Thor and Resene Paris White are great picks in a multi-purpose where activities can demand concentration and calm.

The key to creating a sense of interconnectivity between two areas that each feature a di erent ‘hero’ hue is to weave a few flourishes of one into the other. For example, while Resene Paris White is the main wall colour in the o ce area, a simple painted grid design, a shelf and a painted box in Resene Thor layer the key colour from the lounge zone.

Sometimes, certain spaces and needs demand physical division. Rather than erecting walls that break up the flow of your open-plan space and block sunlight, a low bookcase is an ideal addition for separating a home o ce area from a lounge. If you need a more temporary solution than a full-on built-in bookcase, you can paint a new or second-hand standalone one front and back in the same colour as your walls.

ORGANISED W

ant to be true to the (messy) you? Here are some tips to keep your household chaos under control.

FIND A SYSTEM THAT WORKS FOR YOU

Design a system that syncs with your own personal habits—one that keeps things simple. If something feels overly complicated and requires too much e ort, we will likely not follow it. For example, if you’re not going to take the time to neatly fold a towel over a towel rack, then ditch the rack and opt for some modern wall hooks.

CREATE A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING

Have a home for everything, so that things don’t just get left on random

surfaces around the house. For example this could be a bowl for keys by the door, a hook for the dog leash, or dedicated baskets for shoes or mail.

HARMONISE UNKEMPT AREAS WITH EXISTING DECOR

Take stock of things that create a mess. If you’re an avid reader who has books strewn around, find ways to artfully arrange those items to match the décor. Stack them on a bench, or in rows on top of your dresser.

MINIMISE THE LOOK WITH LAYERS

If opting for shelf styling, create areas for the eyes to rest. Use negative space, and varying layers in height. Try layering with a tall piece of art, a medium one in front, and a smaller piece in front of that.

The company opened its second Christchurch show home in July, on its display site and Southern Regional O ce in Hornby, and is now gearing up for further expansion.

Outfitted by a group of carefully selected partners, the show home opening formally marked the reinvigoration of Lockwood’s presence throughout the South Island, post Covid-19.

The new home, The Vacationer (pictured bottom right page), is a stylish, large twobedroom home from the company’s Ready Built series.

Already it has attracted wide interest with several versions likely to roll out of the company’s Rotorua factory in the coming months.

“Once completed and outfitted, visitors and even the Vacationer’s building team have been surprised by the size, and flexibility of the floorplan,” says Karen Gillam, who manages the southern operations and show homes.

“A lot of the credit must go to our partners, particularly around the window treatments, lighting, kitchen units and appliances,” adds Karen.

The home was built by C2C Construction, which has since been appointed the Christchurch-Canterbury Licensed Builders. Headed by Callum and Rohan Bowman, the C2C team has built numerous Lockwood homes across Canterbury, from Hanmer to Christchurch and Selwyn in recent years.

New Licensed Builders have also recently been appointed in Dunedin, the West Coast and Inland-Mid-South Canterbury, says

Lockwood also has partnerships with former franchisees in the Waitaki and Southland, and The Central Otago – Lakes licensee was appointed several years ago.

“We’re delighted with the calibre of each business in the revitalised network and particularly with the appointment of so many experienced Lockwood builders.

“We’ll announce equally outstanding appointments in both the Nelson-Tasman and Marlborough regions in the next few weeks,” John adds.

Additionally, the company will soon celebrate the unveiling of an indoor building facility in Waimakariri, where up to four of its Ready Built relocatable plans can be completed all under cover, simultaneously.

Lockwood Homes use a unique and exclusive system, locking locally sourced solid laminated timber planks and patented aluminium profiles together to create a strong, versatile structure.

The homes are built from a trusted supply of locally sourced materials, meaning there are minimal disruptions to the building timeline due to supply issues that other home builds may experience.

• Plan ahead

• Take time to make sure that you and your vehicle are safe before starting your journey.

• Avoid the worst peak tra c periods when many highways become congested.

• Allow plenty of time – make the journey part of the holiday.

BOSS HOGG

Nothing screams “land of the free, home of the brave” quite like a double cab truck. Such is the case with the Chevrolet Silverado.

86 November 10, 2022 Metropol

t has been a few years since the Chevy bowtie started to sell its iconic truck through General Motors Specialty Vehicles' New Zealand dealerships. Buyers could choose between the heavy duty 2500 HD or the slightly smaller 1500 LTZ. Now, a new version of the Silverado has landed, and it is by far the most a ordable.

Called the 1500 LT Trail Boss, it retails at $119,990 plus ORC which is $22K less than the regular 1500 LTZ. As its not-sosubtle name suggests, this Chevy is about hauling loads o the beaten track.

These loads can also be of a substantial size thanks to its 6.2L Ecotech3 V8 and payload of 752kg. Oh, and you can also tow 3.5 tonnes.

Rather than blind us with flashy bits and chrome trim, the Trail Boss projects a rugged image with all terrain rubber adorning black 18-inch alloys to go with blacked out grill and accents. As the Trail Boss doesn’t come with factory side steps, you must prop yourself up sharpish to reach the cabin.

Once inside you are greeted with durable and incredibly spacious surroundings. There are also a tonne of hidey holes and storage bins, one of which could quite easily hold a 12-pack of refreshing beverages. The Trail Boss gets a reversing camera, parking sensors

front and rear, power down tailgate, lane departure warning and Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto

Fire up and you don’t get a big thunderous growl, but more of a background burble. This V8 is all about subdued noise and power under control.

The latter of these becomes blindingly obvious once you get going. Despite kitted out in all-terrain rubber, tyre roar is kept minimal. Put your foot down and you ride a wave of seamless torque up to a gentle cruise.

So relaxing is the Trail Boss you could even drive it with your thumb and index finger. You just need an arm out the window and Waylon Jennings on your Spotify.

The Chevrolet Silverado LT Trail Boss is certainly not for everyone. Then again, it was never supposed to be. What it will do though is make heading down the highway, with the biggest load of firewood imaginable, a laugh. It makes no excuses for what it is, and the result is a drive you won’t forget in a hurry. Just don’t try and park it in town.

Torque Talk

While it was considered a taboo subject with some members of the automotive community, owning a car powered by an engine which owed its existence to breakthrough German inventor, Rudolf Diesel, certainly had its advantages.

Diesel engines are generally more fuel e cient than regular internal combustion engines and diesel-powered vehicles o er more low-down torque.

With this pulling power more immediate lower in the rev range, diesel vehicles have also proven ideal at towing and hauling heavy loads. You probably have a friend or

family member who does just that.

The only snag was you had to pay road user charges to keep your diesel car road legal, but this wasn’t so bad since the price of diesel fuel was so much cheaper than regular unleaded fuel. Or so, it was.

Diesel fuel is now on par and in some cases, even more expensive than 91 Octane at the pump. I have seen diesel fuel costing 10 cents more than 91 in some places. If this trend continues, the diesel engine’s benefits will be greatly eclipsed in the minds of many motorists, replaced instead with the foreboding thought of forking out more dough to keep them on the road.
