RICK AND CRAIG’S HOME FOOT SCRAY TO OLINDA
Q - Footscray is such a bustling mini metropolis and close to all the amenities the city has to offer. What prompted you to move to Olinda? A - Craig is passionate about Gardening and has an incredibly knowledge of plants. He is also a collector of rare plants. We had a beautiful garden in Footscray, which we loved. The House was a freestanding weatherboard cottage. Due to Craig’s love of all things botanical, we regularly visited the Dandenong Ranges to visit friends and our favorite Nurseries. As you can imagine we were constantly adding to our already burgeoning collection of plants. On one of these particular jaunts we happened to visit Gentiana Nursery and noticed it was for sale. The Nursery consisted of one and a quarter acres of flat sunny land with accompanying house and garden package. This has always been Craig’s dream so we decided to take the “tree change” pretty much on the spot. Q - Would you call the house you live in a cottage or a bungalow? A - The house was designed to take full advantage of the property with sweeping views of the garden from every room and has a unique floor plan, which does not conform to either of these styles. It’s a 1980’s cedar home with coldstream rock wall on either end. The house faces north so it’s a very sunny block of land. During summer the house is sheltered by large deciduous trees but receives ample sunlight during the winter months when the tree are bare. Q -How does your partnership work? Who takes care of what? A -We’d like to think that we both have input in every decision regarding the garden and the interior of the house and that it reflects both out styles. Q - I noticed how you have mixed heirloom and last century pieces with modern throughout the house, tell us about their history. A -When Craig and I first met we both had fully furnished homes so our home in Olinda includes pieces that are meaningful to both of us as well as the more 4

contemporary pieces we bought together. Every item displayed in the house has a meaningful story behind it. Our home is a result of careful culling and thoughtful combination of both our previous homes. Q - Your Tribal Art? A - The Sepik art was purchased from Jim Davidson in the 1980s; he had a gallery in Ivanhoe and had collected most of these pieces when he was surveying the New Guinea highlands in the 1930s. I think these pieces reflect a love of forests and the people who live in them. Q - I love the glassware around your house; tell us about them, specially the beautifully shaped red vase in the living room. A- The red vase is our latest acquisition. We purchased it last Christmas at the Helena Bay Art Gallery in the far north of New Zealand. The artist is Jason Svendsen who is Swedish and spends a lot of time in New Zealand. We love the nautical feel of the design and the way the colour changes according to the light. Most of the other glassware around the house are old pieces that have been inherited from various family members. Q- What would you say is your house and garden style what is the look you have tried to achieve. A -The garden is a reflection of both our tastes; the huge diversity of plants is a result of Craig’s desire to cultivate many plant species and to take full advantage of the wonderful gardening conditions in the Dandenong Ranges. The more formal elements of the garden have been laid out by me and show my desire to create order. The house is an eclectic collection of the objects we love which we have attempted to display with some sense of style.

GARDEN DESIGN FOR THE BEGINNER. by Craig Wilson
Garden design over the last ten years have focused on hard
landscaping incorporating unchanging and static plants with little regard for plants species or seasonal variation. I encourage the reversal of the current trend to a return of true gardens with all their abundance and seasonal changes. Designing a garden can be a daunting task for the uninitated, take it slowly and select plants with care. Choose the plants on the basis of what does well in your climate, rather than which species you want to grow and place the plants in a position where they will flourish rather than where you think they will look best. The health of your garden is completely tied to the health of the soil, and the importance of soil maintenance is an ongoing process throughout the life of the garden. Mulch annually with at least 15cm. spread throughout to facilitate the eventual build up of a deep layer of organic matter. Fine wood chip is the ideal mulch, pea straw is great for short term crops such as in the vegetable garden but breaks down way to quickly to be effective on trees and shrubs. Plant placement and selection can be very confusing and its so easy to fall into the trap of using fast growing trees and shrubs, a decision which can eventually lead to tears. Vigorous growers will continue to grow fast throughout their lives and will require constant maintenance. Slow growers will more likely require no maintenance and will last for future generations. I recommend the use of deciduous trees , they provide winter sun and summer shade. Ideal deciduos trees for suburban gardens are fruit trees ,crepe myrtle, crab apples or magnolias. For native enthusiast choose from the many really good new varieties of smaller growing eucalypts bearing in mind that these trees require maintenance and are short lived. Screening shrubs for privacy should be selected with care, for excample the current 6
favourite pittosporum are fast growers requiring pruning at least twice a year, left unchecked they make very scrappy small trees. A better solution would be Feijoa, abutilon or some of the smaller callistemon hybrids. Less conventional shrubs such as Osmanthus or Entelea can make for a very interesting garden. The next layer of plants are what gives the garden its real charm, the lower growing shrubs,periennials and bulbs which form the edge of the beds, repetition of the small shrubs give your garden a cohesive feel. To pull the garden together use clipping shrubs such as Westringia, correa, english box or coprosma. Carefully placed clipped shrubs can be surrounded by less restrained plants such as Salvia, Penstemon or late flowering perennials like Aster, Rudbekia, monarda etc the choices are endless. The use or grasses also provide beautiful textural contrasts. Bulbs provide great seasonal displays, for most people associate this group with daffodil or tulips but their are a host of bulbs which will perform much better in Melbourne’s climate. Consider some of the South African species such as the smaller growing Gladioli, sparaxis, tritonia or ixia. These plants will naturalise and return year after year. Finally, accept down time with the plants you choose, a garden filled with plants which look good all year round could end up being boring. Remember that a plants appearance in the pot at point of purchase bears no reflection as to how it will perform in the garden, many great garden plants have largely disappeared from nurseries simply because they don’t present well at point of sale. Frequent small independent nurseries, the plants at large hardware chains are contract grown and shipped in from wholesalers all over the country. A plant grown under shade cloth in Queensland is hardly likely to flourish in a Melbourne garden.

: Tell us about your formative years, Q did you grow up in a large household? What was the strongest family value that helped you achieve what you have today.
A: I had two older brothers with mum and dad,we were a family of 5 so I guess that was large enough. We are a very close family the fact that we grew up in an environment that was very family focused where we were all “ encouraged to communicate” in our formative years. I always felt like I was able to talk to family about any issues in a non-judgemental open environment. The environment I grew up in has helped develop my communication style which has allowed me to get to where I am today. Our parents were our friends, but it was still made very clear to us that they were our parents. Mum was vey firm, we always knew when our boundaries were crossed. I remember us stealing the wooden spoons for obvious reasons.
was it like growing up with Q:yourWhatbrothers?
A: We grew up in the suburbs and went to the beach house on long week-ends and holidays. I was such a tomboy, I remember skate boarding with my brothers, climbing trees getting into scraps. I had a very uneventful childhood. I still have fond memories of camping at grandpa’s farm in Swan Hill during holidays. Fixing fences, helping with the animals and in the vegetable garden. My brothers and I are still very close. As a matter of fact after this I will be having lunch with my oldest brother and sister in law, I am very family orientated.
: What every woman would like to Q know is you are a picture of health with great skin and a healthy glow.
A: Mum always had healthy food, we grew our own vegetables and we very rarely had treats. Treats are for a special occasion even with my own kids. The habit stuck and eating healthy food has formed my life pattern. Being aware that people would like to eat

healthy but do not know where to start or what eating healthy means, I have developed a website with a nuritionist called “ Food Daily” where we write about how to eat and cook well , where to source organic locally grown food, how to grow , process and preserve. I try really hard to fit exercise into my busy life, by including my boys where I can. I take them with me to Pilates classes, we climb, week-ends we will do big long walks as a family. I go to yoga classes with my girlfriend and walk a lot as I have back problems lifting my heavy boys. My husband and I like to fit in the occasional game of golf. Most importantly I like to set aside thinking time and me time.
: Could you share with us what your Q daily eating plan is as an example for our readers. A: Sure happy to I try to keep our eating plan simple and fuss free. Breakfasts: Porridge with chia seeds, ISA mix,cinnamon, stewed apples or we have French Toast. With this we have fresh orange, kale, ginger juice. Lunch is at 11:30 we usually have home made fish cakes or ham,cheese and avacado sandwiches. I never buy white bread and always buy wholemeal or bread with chia seeds. Ted who is 18months will eat anything. Henry is a bit fussy. Snack: Always fruit Dinner: I use the slow cooker a lot, I prep in the morning
cover story and dinner is ready by 5:30 when we eat dinner. Week-ends we have roasts and more elaborate leisurely meals where we sit together as a family and talk about the highlights of our week and day.
From outside looking you have it all, career, loving husband, 2 happy Q:little boys. What’s your secret how do you manage
A. We do say no to a lot of events and only attend special ones. My Husband is a builder and starts at 5:00am. I’m not as busy till the afternoon when I have to leave for work. We are a good tag team. When he returns home most of the housey things are done and dinner is ready. He’ll put the washing on and see to the boys until I return. Our baby sitter helps fold the washing. Between us we manage all our own housework and get a cleaner in once a month to do the windows, scrub floors and give the place a really good once over. This routine really works for us. At the moment we are renovating and are in a rental apartment where we have a cleaner come in regurlarly as part of the deal and I must admit I am enjoying it.
you share with our readers how you met your husband and tell Q:usCould a bit about him
A- I moved into a house, he was 6 houses down. We were always bumping into each other. He would loiter around his front gate wash his car around the time I would be returning from work and we would exchange a few words. It got to the stage where I used to start looking out for him. He finally got round to asking me out and we have been together ever since. He is very hands on especially with the boys, loving, helpful, caring,kind and thoughtful to a fault. His favourite activity with his friends is to go cycling.
Given that your careers are so different does he enjoy the socialising at Q:industry events.
A- Because of the person he is, he looks forward to them as everyone has their own experiences. Doesn’t matter what spectrum of life you’re from everyone has their own personal story. If you go in with an attitude then naturally you will be bored.
Q:Tell us about Ted and Harry
A- Ted is fearless and dives into any situation (will eat anything) Henry is quieter softer side to him he is four and half and has a great sense of humour. Both love their mum and cuddles.
We are aware you are an ambassador of juvenile diabetes tell us about Q-this. A- Diabetes is such an awful disease with so many repercussions, from amputated limbs, failing eyesight and death. Children have to do things they shouldn’t have to, they have to focus on insulin levels and finger prints. Parents have to wake them in the middle of the night to give them honey so they don’t have a hyperglycaemic episode or go into a coma. All this stops them from living, this should be the most joyous and carefree time of their lives. A lot of money is needed for research to find a cure. We do this by having fund raisers in the form of corporate breakfasts, an annual walk and a ball every Sept.
You are also an ambassador for world vision can you share your most Q:poignant eye opening moment when you travelled with them
A- I visited Thailand a year after the Tsunami. World Vision was ensuring there were 3 meals a day , replacing boats, supplying fishing rods till families could support themselves. Houses were built for the victims. My most poignant moment was seeing this 12 year old girl who had lost her mum,dad and brother. She saw her mother swept away trying to save her brother. I could see that she was almost numb from the experiece and had not gotten over the shock and never will.

Managing Director of Tailored Prestige Wines – Simon Payne explains how easy it is to raise money. “We provide a high quality wine for sporting club members and the wine is tailored to that club with their very own label. The label might represent a club legend, the best and fairest winner or a special anniversary. We work with the club every step of the way to help them prepare to launch the wine, then to sell it through” Payne states that his business doesn’t require the club database – as the sales aspect is run externally. “We set up a link that the President of the Club includes in an email and this link directs members to a site where they can see, hear about and purchase the wine. Clubs generally sell the wine for $240 a case – and at $20 a bottle this represents good value for a wine that drinks like a $35 bottle”. It would seem that raising money for a club or charity is what everyone is doing, but Payne is literally at pains to explain that these days it’s not that easy. “Many clubs we speak to are doing it tough. The Sunday sausage sizzle at a soccer or football game takes a lot of effort and time, for not a huge amount of return. We offer the ability for all members, players and staff to sell their
club wine and raise money for the club”. Payne explains that when the wine is sold at $240 a case – the club, on average, raises about $100 a case. “We offer our clubs the opportunity to be sales trained – where we come in and work with them to sell the wine. When you boil it all down – if the club has 200 players, staff and committee – they should be able to sell 2 cases of wine at a minimum each. That’s 400 cases – that’s $40,000 that they would raise”. Payne explains further “We work with one large amateur football club in Melbourne and they have taken our concept on board and have embraced all aspects of it. They will raise over $50,000 this year. The best bit is that there is no reason this can’t be an ongoing annuity stream every year”. Tailored Prestige Wines seem to have come up with a solid concept with this business – as the club receives a rebate at the end of the campaign and the club doesn’t need to part with any cash upfront – none. This certainly seems like a good solution for clubs that have a membership that likes wine. The business has offered a Heathcote Shiraz in the past year and is offering this again plus other varietals as required. Payne explains “We work with the individual club and tailor an offer that is right for them and their members. At the end of the day – we are trying to get members to support their club buy buying 1-2 cases of wine every year – that’s all – and its not like a donation that you see nothing for it – here you get a dozen bottles of fine quality wine and help to support your club at the same time – it’s a win-win for everyone”. Every business needs to differentiate itself in order to stand out from the rest. This could be achieved on the basis of price, quality, responsiveness, customer service, staff satisfaction or whatever the company deems as its competitive advantage.
Rather than base a price on what it costs to build, better to derive an appropriate charge rate based on the value that a product brings to the customers. As we well know, clever marketing can increase the perceived value of a company’s products or services still further, which can enhance the return on a particular solution to an even greater extent.
In general, being the low-cost provider (i.e., price is the key differentiator) is a tough place to be. This is because, in this case, margins are necessarily low, volumes need to be high in order to sustain the business and the opportunities for price discounting are very limited. It becomes even more difficult if you are producing something which can also be done cheaply overseas as you face stiff competition from low-cost producers such as China, India and Korea.
Many business owners are still very reluctant to review their pricing strategy believing that an increase in price would lead to loss of customers. One particular example of this was a discussion I had with a local specialist client manufacturer late last year who insisted that prices could not be raised in their market space and “that was a fact”.
For these reasons, it is in the interest of many Australian businesses to be seen as a high-value supplier and differentiate themselves through nonprice-based factors such as quality, meeting commitments, high value, etc. However, there is often an inherent fear amongst many business owners of being seen to be too expensive and hence the business does not charge enough for what are essentially niche products. In other words, many businesses simply do not value highly enough what they produce or supply. This is an especially common problem amongst technology businesses, where much of the focus tends to be on the product features and capabilities, and where a simple cost + margin formula may be applied to derive the product price. In practice, many of these businesses are not realizing the full potential of the range and breadth of their unique solutions and hence undervaluing them.
In reality, this thinking expresses a “belief” not a fact and is well worth challenging. When I spoke to him earlier this year, he admitted that following our discussion he had raised prices and had not lost a single customer. It is important to realize that I am not advocating an increase in price just for the sake of it, nor am I suggesting that any business should ‘fleece’ its customers. What I do believe to be valuable would be to determine the value that a product or service is actually bringing to its customer base and review the price accordingly. Reviewing whether the company’s marketing is supportive of effectively promoting the solution value would also be worth doing at the same time. Snapchat is a photo messaging application developed in 2011 by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, then Stanford University students. Using the application, users can take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. And because the app’s user demographics indicate that it is used by mainly those belonging to the young age group of 13 to 23, it becomes important for people (especially parents) to understand how to keep their kid users safe. Why do kids love Snapchat? They love the spontaneity of it. It has been (rightfully) drummed into everyone’s heads for years that photos and videos you share are on the Web forever and are really hard to take back, so Snapchat provides a relief of sorts to that. It is playful and “in the moment”— a nice change from the self-presentation and reputation issues in other social media services that display photos indefinitely. They don’t have to worry about some invisible audience. Does Snapchat have a minimum age? Yes, the minimum age is 13, in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). When you download it, Snapchat asks for your date of birth; and if your birth year tells it that you’re under 13, you are redirected to the kids version, called “Snapkidz.” Snapkidz users cannot add friends or share anything, and the app does not send any information to the company. Instead, photos and videos are saved just to the device’s “camera roll.” If you’re a kid, that means you can only play with the photos and videos in Snapkidz on your own device—not share them. Still there are workarounds to this, such as sharing these using other mediasharing tools on your phone, such as texting, email, Facebook, and also deleting Snapkidz and registering over again using a fictitious birth date. 22

What are the risks in using Snapchat? Though there is nothing inherently dangerous about Snapchat, it is often referred to as the “sexting” app. There is no research showing that is true and plenty of anecdotal evidence that sexting actually isn’t the focus for teens; but like any media-sharing service, Snapchat can be used for bad purposes such as sexting and harassment. And it can be particularly hurtful whenever that happens, because Snapchat is typically used among friends (or at least people who have each other’s username or phone numbers). Is it good that Snapchat photos and videos disappear in seconds? Yes, because photos and videos are not put on display and they are not “out there” forever, typically; so there isn’t the self-presentation or reputation anxiety. The ephemeral aspect actually adds a degree of safety, as long as people do not develop a false sense of security about it. As still many others do not immediately realize, media can still be saved as screenshots or photographed using another phone and shared with or without the originator’s knowledge. That can be good or bad—bad because a screen-captured image can embarrass the people in it; good because if things do go wrong it can be used for evidence against someone trying to hurt the people in it. What is the best way to help kids stay safe in Snapchat? As with all social media, respect towards oneself and others makes us safer. Whether the experience is positive or negative depends so much on how people use the app or service, whether or not they are really friends, and how they treat each other in Snapchat. Friends may kid around, and most kids do treat their friends well. It just never hurts to have a conversation (never a lecture) with them about how they use Snapchat just to be sure. 5 Reasons to Eat a Protein-Packed Breakfast
Eating breakfast isn’t just fo r kids. Although you’ve probably stopped growing, your body is constantly renewing itself, replenishing your skin, hair and nails, replacing old tissues with new, breaking down and rebuilding bone and generally keeping your body in the best shape possible. How does your body do it? With the nutrients food delivers. Breakfast is especially important because after a long night’s sleep, the body is low on energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. So that’s one really good reason to eat breakfast. How about five more? 1. Breakfast-skipping is linked with being overweight Although a direct effect of skipping breakfast on weight has yet to be determined, studies indicate that people who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight or obese. One large study found that breakfast skippers were 4.5 times more likely to be heavy than those who ate breakfast (1). Obesity was also related to how many meals were eaten out (1), so when you get the chance, make your breakfast (and pack your lunch) at home! 2. Breakfast helps you balance out your protein Americans get plenty of protein, but we tend to eat most of it at the dinner meal. Protein is essential for developing and maintaining lean muscle, but if we’re not getting enough protein throughout the day, muscle maintenance is not at the maximal level (2). And when we finally get some protein at dinner, it’s largely wasted because the body can only use so much at one time. Use breakfast to pump up your protein. Include eggs, milk, yogurt, cheese and lean meats in your morning meal. Another benefit of protein in the morning is that it’s likely to keep you full longer, as another study found. Those who ate protein at breakfast said they felt satisfied longer than those who at the same amount of protein at other meals (3). 28
3. Breakfast is packed with the nutrients most of us don’t get enough of Pastries and fatty breakfast meats don’t count, but if you stick to breakfast foods like whole-grain cereal and milk, fruit and yogurt or eggs and whole grain toast, you’re much more likely to meet your daily dose of necessary nutrition. Those who skip breakfast tend to have lower levels of calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc, vitamins A, E, B6, C and folate (4). 4. Eating breakfast benefits blood sugar and cholesterol levels A small study found that when lean, healthy women skipped breakfast, their fasting blood sugar was higher, along with their cholesterol, upping their risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Skipping breakfast caused the women to eat more throughout the day than when they ate breakfast, too (5). 5. Skipping breakfast won’t save you calories It may seem like eliminating a whole meal must lead to weight loss, but the opposite appears to be true. Many studies have found that those who skip breakfast tend to eat more during the day and are more likely to be overweight or obese (see Number 1 above). One study found that skipping breakfast is associated with higher risks of developing chronic diseases like diabetes, metabolic syndrome and high blood pressure.
