KINGSVILLE
Gentlemen’s Residence Perfect Home for Two
Craig and Roy have personalised their town house into an elegant home for two during the week and a family space when Craig’s three son’s visit on weekends. A home where everything is in its place and where there is a place for everything.
Art, Colour and Texture Texture has been added to the walls with the grey wallpaper spattered with gold flecks woven into the paper. Art is collected during travels showcase their love for the East. We were impressed to note that their walk in wardroom was colour blocked with little sectioned trays for cufflinks, watches and other accessories. Roy has a penchant for succulents with a flair for sculpturally arranging each plant to enhance the shape and leaves of the other.
The Elegant Outdoors The outdoor dining is perfect for Craig’s barbecues and Roy’s use as an outdoor kitchen when cooking aromatic Asian cuisine. It’s a fine example of an understated elegant home where less is more.

Help SecondBite Break a Record at Melbourne Cup Carnival Last year SecondBite raised over $540,000 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival – which broke all previous Pin & Win records - and was enough to provide over 1.3 million healthy, nutritious meals for vulnerable Australians and their families.
Pin & Win is the major annual fundraising activity conducted by the Victoria Racing Club and this year will be the 20th year of Pin & Win as the major charitable activity associated with the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Money raised will enable SecondBite to provide fresh nutritious food to many community food programs supporting people in need across Australia, including local agencies such as the laverton Community Children’s Centre, West Footscray neighbourhood house, Western region indigenous Gathering Place, ascot Vale special school and iramoo youth refuge.
VrC acting Chief executive Julian Sullivan said the VrC was excited to be partnering with SecondBite again after a record result in 2013.
“The money raised last year had a massive impact on the lives of the most vulnerable people in our community. We are so grateful to the Victoria racing Club for the incredible opportunity to again raise these much needed funds as we know demand for food relief has increased significantly in the last 12 months. “This year we want to match or exceed last year’s result and hope to raise enough money for 1.5 million healthy meals for families and children who are going through tough times,” said Elaine Montegriffo, CEO of SecondBite. “SecondBite volunteers will be out in force at all Melbourne Cup Carnival events and we hope that everyone will buy a pin while they are enjoying a day at the races,” she said.
“The 2014 Melbourne Cup Carnival will mark the 20th year of Pin & Win and we are delighted to share this milestone with SecondBite, whose dedication and commitment helped deliver an extraordinary result last year to assist some of Australia’s most vulnerable people,” he said. Pin & Win lapel pins will be available to purchase from turnbull stakes day on 4 October 2014. They will also be available through volunteer pin sellers on each day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, online and through the Flemington shop. Ian and Simone Carson: Battling Hunger One Bite at a Time
I
an and Simone Carson may come across to you as two rather ordinary folks, but the inspiring work that they do with SecondBite is nothing but extraordinary. Established in late 2005, SecondBite began when Ian and Simone saw waste food and had the simple idea of collecting that food. SecondBite began life as a volunteer run organisation that collected small amounts of surplus food from a couple of local markets and restaurants and re-distributed it to a handful of recipient agencies in metropolitan Melbourne.
Fast-forward to today and it’s a significantly different picture. In 2014, SecondBite now employs 56 staff, operates 10 warehouse hubs, has 21 vehicles and is supported by more than 600 active volunteers to redistribute fresh food to over 1100 community food programs across Australia. We also have amazing support from national Ambassadors like Curtis Stone and Matt Preston. “Take the time to listen to people,” said Ian when asked of the secret of his success. Born and raised in Surrey Hills in Melbourne, the closed-knit communitybased living proved to be fertile grounds for his future endeavor into a thriving notfor-profit organization rescuing precious food and fighting hunger in service of his fellow Australians. “My mother told me to eat my vegetables because kids were starving in Africa,” quipped Ian, as he gives another glean into his humble past that has influenced his work today. What is SecondBite? Currently there are up to 2 million Australians who are going hungry, while at the same time over $8 billion worth of food goes to waste in Australia each year. SecondBite rescues surplus fresh food that would otherwise go to waste and redistributes it, free of charge, to over 10
by Danial Radzmi
1100 community food programs across Australia, where it is converted into healthy nutritious meals for people in need. Food is donated by farmers, wholesalers, markets, supermarkets, caterers and events. The recipient community food programs provide vital support for people in need – individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, violence, youth at risk, disadvantaged indigenous communities, asylum seekers and new arrivals. Passion in Rescuing Food and Hunger Relief The open knowledge that there was appalling food wastage, not just here in Melbourne, but throughout Australia, drove Ian and Simone towards action. While few actually did anything about it, these folks went out there and did something about it. It does seem that SecondBite has succeeded primarily because of the simplicity of the business model. It takes about 20 seconds to describe to someone what they do. It’s not rocket science. The result of this simplicity has made a profound impact, not only those who receive food – but also on those who give it. Ups and Downs of Working on SecondBite A high point for Ian recently was “knowing that this year’s fresh food that we collect will be enough to make 10 million hearty nutritious 500g meals and will go to the people who need it most.” The SecondBite research shows that the collection and re-distribution of surplus fresh food has a profound effect on the quality of life and mental wellbeing of Australia’s most vulnerable men, women and children. The hardest part of the job is realizing the amount of work yet to be done and ensuring the financial support to achieve
cover story
their goals. As Ian elucidates; “We should not exist as an organisation, there should not be food insecurity in the `lucky country’ and we should not have the levels of waste we have.” There are many factors that contribute to people experiencing food insecurity including homelessness, unemployment, illness, geographic location, access to transport and lack of education around food and nutrition. And yet Australians waste $8 billion of food each year. The Future of SecondBite SecondBite is now a national organisation. They have operations in Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia - they have now achieved a truly national footprint in all States and Territories.
BACKYARD BEES by DOUG PURDIE
Doug Purdie fell in love with bees in 2009 when reading about the battle bees are facing in most of the world due to widespread diseases. Five years later and he’s a selfdescribed ‘beevangelist’ managing more than 70 beehives on city rooftops, balconies, backyards and community gardens. Starting small, selling honey at a community farmer’s market, Doug was given his first bee hive by his then father-in-law. In no time he had joined the Amateur Beekeepers’ Association of New South Wales Sutherland branch where he met his business partner, Vicky. The two bee fanatics have since formed The Urban Beehive, a business dedicated to bringing beehives to urban areas, and kick-started the Sydney City Branch of the Amateur Beekeepers’ Association. There’s no doubt about it – bees have a bad rap. But many people don’t realize that bees pollinate our food and without them we have a major problem.
SecondBite has captured people’s attention and their imagination. It has caused many to think deeply about those in the community who really face a daily struggle to look after and feed themselves. Their operations are growing to provide access to fresh food for the most vulnerable in our community, at the same time our Research and Development team are working hard on long-term preventative solutions to food insecurity. Though despite SecondBite’s clear successes, the road towards complete food security is paved with more challenges. And in Ian’s own words; “We need help. We only exist because people like you want to help, to support the work we do in the community, please go to www.secondbite.org”

PETER JAGO
ON How to Wear a Hat
A
ustralia’s top Milliners came together on 20 August to showcase the trends and styles for this year’s Caulfield Cup Carnival at the Millinery Couture Runway Show. Hosted by Channel 7’s Jaqueline Felgate from Seven News, the evening featured a runway show debuting stunning designs and creations from a number of high profile milliners including Peter Jago, Serena Lindeman and Melissa Jackson; as well as fresh spring floral inspirations from Rebecca Stacey of Canary Jane Flowers.
Tip #1: Peter Jago says “choose your hat according to your face shape” Hats need confidence. Our grandmothers wore hats till the 1970’s as the norm. My mother was an avid hat wearer and this is where my passion for hats begun. Hats were a doctor’s feel good accessory of its time. All the ladies used to wear hats to church until the 12
by Elaine Sharman
Pope declared in the 1960s that it was not necessary. Since then ladies have lost the art of wearing a hat, from time to time I used to have classes coaching ladies on this very same subject. Choose your hat according to your face shape. There are 5 face shapes - oval, long oval, round, square, heart shaped Round - Wear hat tipped back away from face Heart Shaped - Romantic with soft embelishments Oval - any style hat suits Long Oval - Hat should be worn with a lower crown Square- feminised masculine shapes for example the soft pilby aka “ Marlene Dietriech - 1930’s” Heart - Shaped Romantic with soft embellishments. Peter’s look for the year is Tudor embellished with feathers or a sculptural effect e.g. the model with the red beret walking down the catwak. Theme for this year is romance.

Tip #2: Louis MacDonald’s tip on hats is to tip it when you wear it Hats are designed to be worn at a particular angle. If you are not sure how it is supposed to be positioned, experiment. If it doesn’t look good to tipped to the right, try it to the left or wearing it straight on.” These styles were all debuted at the MRC Members Millinery Evening in anticipation of the Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup Carnival. www.millinery.com.au

VENICE CULT RECIPES pork in milk In the traditional recipe using pork loin, the meat is marinated in white wine before cooking to give it more flavour. It’s also quite fine without the marinade. This recipe is inspired by my mother’s version. Serves: 6 Preparation TIme: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 2 hours 1 litre (35 fl oz/4 cups) milk 2 garlic cloves, halved 10 sage leaves 2 rosemary stalks Juice and zest of 1 lemon 1.2 kg (2 lb 10 oz) boned pork loin 2 tablespoons olive oil 20 g (3⁄4 oz) butter Heat the milk gently in a medium saucepan with the garlic, herbs and lemon zest. Brown the meat in a large saucepan on high heat with the oil and butter, 14

drain off the excess fat, season with salt and pepper and pour over the hot milk mixture. Simmer covered for 11⁄2 hours. Remove the meat from the saucepan and set aside. Add the lemon juice to the milk and let it reduce: the sauce will curdle from the acidity of the lemon. Remove the garlic and lemon zest and serve the meat covered with the sauce. Serve with seasonal vegetables. Variation Replace the milk with beer at room temperature, added gradually during cooking. Simmer meat and potatoes on a bed of onions braised with 1 tablespoon juniper berries and 1 teaspoon cumin seeds. This version with beer and potatoes comes to us via the Austrians who occupied Venice at the end of the eighteenth century after Napoleon.

dolphins, sperm whales and blue whales. And don’t forget the delectable cuisine including spicy curries and ocean fresh seafood and the famed Ceylon blue sapphires and other precious gemstones.
Referred to as Taprobane and Serendib, Sri Lanka has played an important part in the spice and silk routes and was colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. Marred by a thirty year civil war which ended recently, the population is finally beginning to enjoy the benefits of peace and prosperity as the island is now emerging as a unique destination giving travellers the opportunity of experiencing a very diverse range of touring within a relatively small geographic area; and locals the opportunity of rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.
Sri Lanka is a unique destination which is relatively unknown to many Australian travellers and yet offers wonderful opportunities for leisurely holidays, quick beach getaways and romantic weddings and honeymoons.
With a land mass 3,000 square kilometres smaller than Tasmania, Sri Lanka still packs a huge amount of sightseeing and activities whether you are an intrepid traveller, an adrenalin junkie, enjoy the finer side of travel and luxury stays or lean more towards a great place to relax and unwind. This tiny island has 24 wildlife reserves with unique and endemic wildlife which can be explored by 4 x 4 game drives that allow you to encounter wild elephant and elusive leopard. The sweeping, emerald hills of tea estates continue to display a strong history and connection to the British, while the ruined ancient cities and temples of the Cultural Triangle and 6 UNESCO World Heritage Sites show the rich ancient history and heritage of the people of Sri Lanka. A Place to Call Home: Iconic hotels designed by renowned South East Asian architect, Geoffrey Bawa dot the country and include Kandalama, Heritance Ahungalla, The Lighthouse, Villa Bentota and his own private residence, Lunuganga Estate among others. Aman Resorts offer two properties in Galle and Tangalle while Relais & Chateau have Ceylon Tea Trails in the hill country. Add to this numerous Small Luxury Hotels of the World as well as beautiful local boutique hotels and Sri Lanka has something to suit every budget. A Culinary Gem: With a rich heritage of Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisation, Sri Lankan cuisine is infused with multi-cultural flavours. Being a largely Buddhist population, very little meat is consumed. Fish and vegetable curries are spicy and enriched with coconut milk and eaten with rice, “hoppers” – crispy pancake, roti or “string hoppers”- noodle pancake. But it’s not all curries. If you desire pizza or steak, these are also readily available at many restaurants around the island.

Easy Morning by Pete Brown
Habits for Fitter Start
The morning routine is sacred for most people – it’s what sets the mood for the day, and disrupting it would ensure a pretty crabby day. How can you improve your morning routines to make you feel better than you already could? Here are a few suggestions: Eat a quick power breakfast
We all know how important breakfast is in setting the tone for the day, but many of us just don’t have the time to prepare a power breakfast – and by that we don’t mean the greased-up Full English, but a simple smoothie or muesli that can power you throughout the day. One idea is creating a CoffeeBanana smoothie, which uses yoghurt, bananas, and brewed coffee that gets your engine running with a daily caffeine fix, potassium, and fibre all in one drink. A bowl of muesli is another easy way to begin the day. A muesli mix should contain enough fibre and whole-grain carbohydrates to last until lunch, while nuts and seeds provide a good dose of omega 6 and 3 oils to keep the heart healthy and lower cholesterol. Throw in the antioxidant-rich blueberries into the mix, and you’ll have the perfect start.
Cardio in the morning
Many of us loathe working out in the morning, but it really is the best time to work out. After sleeping, your body is primed to burn fat as your body’s glycogen levels are decreased, and working out soon in the morning pushes your body to burn fat. Consistently doing it in the morning increases your metabolism in what would normally be a slow period, resulting in higher calorie burn. Also, getting it done in the morning ensures that you won’t be feeling too exhausted in the evening to do your workouts. Trainer Chris Williamson advises that a person who goes for a morning, lowimpact “fasted cardio” workout is three times more effective than doing it in the evening. “Eat about 15-20 minutes after the workout, and that’ll keep the metabolism up for the rest of the day,” he says, adding that a morning cardio session can be three times as effective as an evening one. 18

The Eyes: Every
Woman’s Hallmark of Feminity
by Elaine Sharman
Of all a woman’s makeup bag favorites, mascara has to be the most irresistible – the accessory that virtually every woman uses and simply cannot do without. Almost 70% of women use it 5 days a week on average, while a third of them apply it every single day*. This daily ally is the ultimate eye- beautifier. If they could only keep one beauty tool, it would have to be mascara! Mascara is the key to sparkling eyes, and its unique power stems from its truly instant results. Able to reveal your beauty in the blink of an eye, mascara is both a weapon of seduction and an object of fascination, inspiring the curiosity and desire of all. It lengthens, curls, thickens and separates lashes for widened and intensified eyes, amplifying their radiance while offering infinitely intense depth.
The Eye: An Asset to Master Though mascara is the best-loved and mostused of makeup products, it is also one of the trickiest to master to its fullest potential. Why? Curved and round, the eye is the most multi-dimensional facial feature, with many hard-to-reach areas. Eye experts at Lancôme have studied and theorized its complex forms during makeup workshops; they have astutely observed mascara users so as to precisely identify their difficulties and offer unprecedented solutions.
Grandiose Application For a more expert technique, position the brush at the root of the lashes. Work the lashes starting at the outer corner of the eye moving inward, rotating your wrist and extending through the lashes using a zigzag motion.
1. Start by applying mascara to the outer corner lashes on the upper lashline. To do so, hold the wand with the curve facing down and wing-out the lashes.
s y a w a e Giv
win
2. Slightly rotate the wand between your fingers a third of the way round: the brush naturally positions itself horizontally over the central third of the eye. 3. Work in a slight sideways oscillating movement from left to right, pressing the brush closer to the lash line and lifting up the lash fringe from the very start of application. Lift the lashes up. 4. Once again rotate the wand another third of the way round, positioning the brush over the remaining inner third. Naturally tilted, the brush is now pointing towards the nose. Extend the lashes inward. 5. Work in exactly the same way on the lower lid. Incredibly intuitive to use, Grandiôse is mastered after just a few tries. Before you even look at the instructions, the most important thing is to simply rotate the wand between your fingers and become familiar with it. For truly Grandiôse volume, slowly and precisely position the brush at the roof of the lashes, virtually flush with the skin. Starting at the outer corner, press upwards to lift the lashes as much as possible. Now that the lash roots are coated, all you have to do is apply the formula up to the tips to create phenomenal curl. Repeat application, gliding the brush along the lashes of the outer corner working toward the inner corner. Guaranteed Grandiôse volume!

Why parents/ Business owners need to understand Social Media, and remain close to their children / Staff. Q: Why is my child always on social media, and is it dangerous? A: Social Media is a fantastic platform for communicating with friends, family, contacts, business connections, and like-minded groups allows you to perform this right from your mobile device, or desktop computer. Children of today (Legally 13years+) utilise social media platforms for extending their friendships, and developing their social media standing, and therefore their standing in school and in life. It is important for all children to feel accepted and it is no different to being accepted in social media landscapes. Sharing with your friends instantly a joyous moment that you just experienced, and receiving instant gratification once someone likes or shares your post. This is a modern form of sending one another letters back and forth, however we have evolved to real time communications, and our children have been born into this landscape. Do not worry, they can handle it, as long as Parents understand it, and can join in on this form of communication. It is only dangerous if your child feels somewhat threatened or bullied on their account, and is exposed to levels of life that are out of their/ your
“The Power of
Q: Will my staff be too distracted by their social media platforms whilst at my workplace? Will they waste time on it? A: Encourage it, embrace it, and travel with your staff engaging in platforms that shout out to as many people as possible about your fantastic business. If you have disgruntled staff, they will not support you anyway, so best to apply the Coca Cola principle of a simple one page Social Media Policy that encourages social media use, with mature rounded boundaries. Many businesses in 2008 and 2009 when social media really started gaining traction, were worried that employees would become distracted from their work duties, and would not perform their job role efficiently. New research indicates that it has quite the opposite effect, and staff work more efficiently
due to having their social life incorporated into their daily work life. They are no longer cut off from their friends. Technology is leading us down this path, therefore greater gains can be realised if we embrace this change, and become part of the social media landscape; facebook, twitter, instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin with many more interest platforms. The more that you look into this social phenomenon the more you learn that it is all word of mouth; friend telling friend, Chinese whispers, and really a lot of people feeling empowered to say things that they really wouldn’t say to someone face to face. To ensure that your staff stay on top of things, friend your staff, ask your staff to check in to your work place, post about work, share the energy and be a part of the growing social environment, as at the end of the day, this will make your business more easily found, more visible on the web, and more buoyant from a Word Of Mouth advocacy, and if it isn’t then you only have yourself to blame. If you do not control what is being said about you by owning the landscape in social media, then someone else will, and you can be is their mercy. Staff will always be your best advocates, so let them communicate on social media platforms that is sweeping the world, as it is now, becoming part of the norm.

Much of my work involves working with companies to define and implement a business strategy. I love the opportunity to work with business owners or a management team to uncover what is holding the business back and determine what needs to be done to move the company forward. It necessarily involves understanding what makes the business special, how to leverage this to the max and the creation of a balanced scorecard containing realistic, specific measurable goals to be completed within defined timeframes.
Whilst the establishment of well-defined SMART (see previous article) goals is essential, these still require an extra couple of ingredients in order to ensure success, namely passion and belief. Now before you start to believe that I am going way too right-brained here, think about anything really significant that you have achieved in your life and ask yourself whether you were especially fired up and/or compelled to succeed in this (passion) and believed it could be done. 20
control. The minimum age is 13 to legally hold a social media platform; however all parents do not always support this. All we can do is remain close to our children, and be a part of their life, however it is not always ‘cool’ to post to their wall or comment on their posts, as during these teenage years, children are constantly trying to prove themselves to their friends, peers, family and social standings.
Chances are that there was a strong emotional driver and although you may have had some reservations about your ability to achieve it, you would most likely have thought the objective at least achievable, i.e. you believed it could be done.
It is no different in business. If a manager’s heart is not really into an objective and/or does not believe in it, staff know and the manager’s ability to fully engage the staff is severely compromised. However, work for someone that is excited by the challenge and believes it can be accomplished, then the experience can be both motivational and inspirational. In fact, the power of passion and belief can often transcend “normal” perspectives on possible outcomes and enable things to be done that otherwise might seem impossible. This is highlighted well in Walter Isaacson’s excellent biography of Steve Jobs in which Isaacson described how Job’s passion and belief could create a “reality distortion field” that

lead to results others believed were impossible. One such example is the overlapping window panes that we now take for granted as part of our computer graphical user interface. Jobs had seen this demonstrated at Xerox PARC who were first to attempt its development and believed that Apple could do it as well if not better. In fact, Xerox never had implemented this and Apple overcame significant technical challenges to produce it fired by Jobs’ unwavering belief that it already existed. Unfortunately, if you trust many of the recent statistics on the internet, staff disengagement at work is alarmingly high and the consequent impact on employee and company productivity is extremely damaging. Perhaps if we could find ways to reignite employee passion and belief, we might just start to see not only better business performance but also increase staff satisfaction. SPRING PROPERTY SEASON ARRIVES The spring property selling season is upon us, with 1000 auctions being held across Melbourne each week through to late September. And in the inner west alone there will be about 200 auctions held between mid-September and mid-October.
the garage is organised. And, if you are thinking of undertaking major work on the home, it’s best to gain input from a local market expert – that is, an experienced agent.
As the market remains strong, driven partly by low interest rates and increased investor activity, it remains a perfect time to look to market and sell your home.
The agent can advise how much work needs doing to your home before selling; there’s no point spending money which will not be recouped. Also, your agent will use comparable local sales to realistically assess the price you can hope to achieve.
And for those planning to sell – or even just thinking about it – the two key items to get underway are to prepare your home for sale, and to gain advice from an agent. You’ll need to do a major spring clean, inside and out. Make sure that the garden is tidy and
REIV research shows home sellers prefer estate agents well regarded locally. Seek advice from people you trust. A survey of REIV members found their most important referral source was word of
mouth – this can be as valuable as an agency’s advertising and website. Use only licensed agents and compare their professionalism and the strategies behind their marketing and advertising campaigns. Ask agents about their most recent successful local sales. Once the agent is chosen, and the home is presentable for sale, you can face the spring selling season with confidence.
