In this issue we present my home, dubbed “Raffles Melbourne” by friends and colleagues. The apartment is one of 5 in a double story Victoriancirca 1885. We love the 15 foot high ceilings, the perfect setting for the 19th. century Murano Chandelier in the living room, purchased from an antique shop that no longer exists in High Street Armadale. The backdrop of magnolia walls lends itself to the use of the full colour spectrum of rosé and green with touches of blue, white and gold for the soft furnishings and accessories. The apartment is filled with inherited furniture and modern pieces, one example is the travertine dining table surrounded by Edwardian chairs upholstered in striped french brushed cotton from ‘Balzac’. The table doubles as an extra kitchen work bench when catering for large parties. The compact kitchen is to the left of the dining room through a square arch. The office, to the right of the dining room, is the heart of MetroWest where I get my creative ideas and shut myself off in the middle of the night to meet a deadline or when inspired to write. We have showcased the flow of the apartment from the dining room right through to the master bedroom. I have chosen to share special pieces that are dear to me. The Elephant lampshade was purchased from MOMU in Swan Street Richmond as a gift for my husband because it is the perfect replica of a sculpture we saw in a Piazza Nerva on our Roman holiday which we were both so delighted with. There is always a jar of lollies for visiting children,

it’s amusing how they make a bee line for “the elephant” I recall a song and the words “A house is not a home if there is no one there” our home is certainly

RAFFLES filled with friends, family, music and laughter.Proudly displayed are art and pieces given to us by dear friends, artwork by Jason Waterhouse, paintings by my daughter Maddison. The porcelain bowl is by a french potter in South Melbourne purchased at Stockroom in Kynton a haven for pieces by Victorian designers and makers. I hope you have enjoyed a glimpse into my world as much as I have enjoyed sharing.

what’s on Westgate cameras to be switched on Fixed road safety cameras located outbound on the Westgate Freeway near Millers Rd and inbound at Grieve Parade will be switched on soon. The cameras were deactivated in June 2013 to allow VicRoads to conduct road works. Variable message signs will be in place warning drivers that they will be enforcing soon. The cameras will begin active enforcement during the week beginning February 9 and the messaging will change to “cameras now enforcing.” Road Policing Superintendent Kevin Sheridan said during a 14-week trial period the cameras detected more than 12,000 speeding motorists. Truck curfews in West The State Government has introduced truck curfews in Yarraville and Footscray. Trucks will no longer be able to use Somerville Rd, Yarraville, during peak school hours from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm from Monday to Friday on school days. An additional night curfew will also restrict trucks from using Moore St, Footscray, between 8pm and 6am Monday to Friday, and from 1pm Saturday until 6am Monday. MIA FREEDMAN 1. Can you provide a snapshot of Mamamia Mamamia is our biggest website, it’s what everyone is talking about today, from politics to pelvic floors, celebrity, current affairs….it’s the zeitgeist. 2. Snapshot of iVillage.com.au This is our parenting site. What mothers are talking about today. And it’s not just about their kids! Mothers want to be spoken to as women, not just mothers. 3. Snapshot of Glow Health and beauty for real. We say it’s a site for any woman with a face and a body who wants to look and feel better. We’re already number one in this category online after launching just a few months ago because there’s a real appetite for more authentic content. 4. You are very successful with Mamamia, iVillage.com.au. What is your debrief daily and who are you reaching out to? Why did you create the platform Debrief Daily is where the conversation among women goes next. It’s our new site for women 40+. There is currently no form of media talking to women like me in a way that’s authentic or appealing. For so many women in this age group it’s a time of reinvention and reinvigoration and Debrief Daily will meet their needs. 5. You have estabilied your own network do you have a vision for the future and how to reach people The Mamamia Women’s Network has big plans. We have proven ourselves to be the undisputed leaders in women’s media. 79% of all time women spend on women’s websites is on our network. And that’s up against the big boys in massive media companies. 6. Your area of influence seems to be around conversations and insights is this right? We have a huge reach now – 4 million women per month – but our key point of difference is engagement. Women spend up to 10 times longer on our websites than our competitors because we know how to make women click and stay and share content, whether it’s editorial or branded content. 10

How do you manage all of these professional pursuits and raise a family Not very well most of the time! I do my best and that’s usually not nearly good enough. But I enjoy both too much to ever stop trying. 9. How important is Jason Lavigne to you and your future success. Before Jason came on board as co-founder five years ago, I had a personal blog in my loungeroom and I was exhausted and stuck. Now we are a network with four websites and a staff of 85 people. MONACO PLAYGROUND OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS

by Hassanti Perrera

The Principality of Monaco is nothing short of breathtaking. Situated on the French Riviera it is bordered by France and the Mediterranean and is the second smallest and the most densely populated country in the world.

Being a tiny country, Monaco can be visited in a very short space of time but it is wonderful to spend a few days languishing in the opulence and pretending that you belong here, even if you don’t speak French.

Wherever you are in Monaco there is style, beauty, opulence and very expensive cars. It’s a fairy tale kingdom, an exclusive resort, a gamblers paradise and a ritzy theme park all rolled into one.

The fortress-like Grimaldi palace is a short stroll past the harbour and through the surrounding parkland and provides a wonderful place to explore in the early morning. If you wish to visit the palace itself, it’s open for visitors from June to October.

Made famous after the fairy tale wedding of Hollywood actress, Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier Grimaldi, Monaco has become the playground and tax haven of the rich and famous. The beautiful harbour of Port Hercule is filled with luxury yachts docked from all over the world, vying for space and attention. Some are available for day hire and what could be better than spending the day on a Mediterranean yacht like a millionaire? Monegasques are very chic and dress stylishly; like they have just stepped out of the pages of Vogue; and speak in a lovely lilting French accent which is mesmerising. From mid-morning, many can be found enjoying their baguettes and café au laÎt at the Brasserie Café de Paris, an iconic establishment at the Place du Casino, a stroll away for the beautiful Hotel Hermitage and the opulent Hotel de Paris. Speaking of the Monte Carlo casino, it is probably the only disappointment. An impressive building and once the glamorous venue of high rollers and movie stars, the clients are now mostly tourists and cruise ship crews who spend their evening playing the few roulette and poker tables gathered together in the vast space, but most of the casino is not even in use

The French Riviera is only a short drive away and the towns of Nice, Cannes, Cagnes-Sur-Mer and the picturesque hamlet of Èze can be explored at leisure.

A CULINARY GEM The Brasserie Café de Paris provides a wonderful location from which to people watch. The café provides both indoor and outdoor seating but the al fresco dining is by far the most popular and tables need to be booked early. The café serves typical French fare including wonderful snacks, pastries, delicious desserts and the sweetest fresh strawberries which can be enjoyed at any time throughout the day.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME With hotels to suit any budget, to really experience Monaco, splash out and stay at either the Hotel Hermitage or the Hotel de Paris: both overlooking magnificent Port Hercule and onto the Mediterranean beyond. Both hotels are stylish and chic with the Hotel Hermitage being styled a little more on clean lines and a modern feel while the Hotel de Paris is the grand dame in décor, classic styling and ambience.

A LOVE AFFAIR WITH RAW FOOD STARTS HERE The food blogosphere is full of diet die-hards advocating the latest trends in revolutionising your eating habits. But, after years of suffering from hormonal imbalances, fatigue, infections and depression, Megan May has a different approach: “Through my experience…a mostly raw, mostly plant-based diet has tremendous health benefits [but] stressing about every mouthful you eat is a bore and, ironically, quite unhealthy.” The Unbakery is an unadulterated and unbelievably delicious tome of more than 150 raw plant-based recipes that celebrate food instead of restricting it. Eating raw food (meaning the ingredients haven’t been heated above 46 degrees Celsius) maximises your absorption of essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes that tend to be reduced in the cooking process. Megan encourages her readers to embrace the raw lifestyle with tips to de-stress and detox, indepth explanations of her favorite ingredients and advice for storing and mpreparing each meal. The most important thing, however, is to experiment with how a raw diet fits into your lifestyle and tailor The Unbakery to your body’s needs. Megan’s accessible recipes, which are all free from gluten, dairy, refined sugars and wheat, combine indulgent flavours with good organic ingredients. From her famous ‘Grawnola’ to Mexican Tacos and a sumptuous Blueberry Cheesecake, it’s easy to see why the raw food movement is becoming a part of everyday life.

Megan May is the chef and owner of awardwinning Auckland cafes Little Bird Organics and The Unbakery. She spent her childhood on an organic market garden and small farm in West Auckland, surrounded by beautiful food. After struggling with severe allergies to gluten, dairy and sugar, she began a lifelong love affair with creating and sharing raw food for wellbeing and pleasure.

CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay is a delicate green coloured grape varietal that is universally pressed to extract crisp and fresh white wine. Initially heralding from France in the Burgundy region, the world grape markets now enjoy producing their own local version of this celebrated varietal of wine. Most markets commence with this grape due to its ability to grow in all climatic conditions, whether cool or warm, and its versatility and ease of entry into the world market of wine tasting and sales. The Chardonnay grape tends to be quite neutral on its own, however some hues and flavours can be often be linked to a more oak influence, or some even say terroir. The Chardonnay vinification process can lend itself from the edginess of Chablis, with smooth tropical fruitiness, and some very refined Oak flavours when grown in different regions. Australian Chardonnay’s tend to develop a citrus flavour due to the warmer climatic conditions, and with even warmer conditions a hint of peach and melon tends to develop in this versatile grape. Mango and Banana flavours are also said to be found in this remarkable wine when the grapes are grown in the hotter coastal regions. Chardonnay was once treated poorly and provided negative feedback due to its huge popularity pre 1990’s, and the treatment of such a great grape ensured it retreated in its sales and growth amongst its growing consumer base. In current times it has made a strong resurgence and the support for this humble grape is universal in its approach for global dominance.

REMVI BY THE BAY

GREEK & MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE One of Melbourne’s iconic Greek eateries, Remvi By The Bay overlooks historic Commonwealth Reserve and the bobbing yachts moored off the piers of Williamstown, with great views across to the Melbourne city skyline. The restaurant’s white linen tables and open airy feel set the scene for a memorable Greek food experience, full of flavour and good cheer. Serving authentic and flavoursome dishes based on traditional Mediterranean recipes. A starter platter of dips has a combination of tzatziki, eggplant, tarama, skordalia and red capsicum served with pita bread. There are plenty of choices for mains and one that stands out is the scallops saganaki - scallops cooked with chilli, wine, fetta and tomato salsa, served on a bed of rizoni. Vegetarian dishes are available as well as a range of mouth-watering char grilled meats all complemented with an extensive local and international wine selection. They also have a wide banquet selection. We tried the traditional Greek oven baked lamb cooked slowly in its own jus with olive oil, lemon, oregano and herbs served with baked potatoes. Just for a moment, it transported us to the sun drenched Greek Isles. Absolutely to die for. Remvi by the Bay - 125 Nelson Place Williamstown. Bookings essential.

FAS H IO N ESCAPE The talented Atong is from South Sudan and the oldest of eight, she arrived on these shores in 2005 and completed her Bachelor of Fashion Design and Technology at RMIT. She says “I wish my clothes to give a strong message reiterating an independent identity through the wearer. One that hails luxury and comfort with an edge. I draw my inspiration from no one thing in particular. My upbringing gave me that understanding of exploring and developing my skills and interests, which led me to be a designer/pattern cutter, it gave me the necessary instinct to investigate”

“Atong Omoli is a label for not only the fashionista in us all, but the ethically conscious citizen of the planet. The gracefully dressed Atong Omoli woman becomes an ambassador of goodwill and great design. Her strong design lines are fitted and layered. The fabric is custom designed with her signature emblem, conveying the message of intercultural appreciation that many young Africans are championing across the diaspora. Atong Omoli is my escape plan, with this label I want to show everyone that no matter where you’re from or come from, that it is your responsibility to make your dreams come true. No one can let you down but yourself.”

LOVE AND NOURISH In October 2013, Wendy La Roche established Love & Nourish - her organic meal catering, which focused on delivering deliciously healthy gluten-free and dairy-free lunches in recycled packaging created for her vast health and fitness clientele. As a passionate holistic nutrition coach with great love for cooking, Wendy’s recipes have been inspired by her extensive travels through Europe and the Middle East, as well as her childhood growing up on a Flexitarian diet. Initially hoping to bring a near-complete cookbook to fruition, Wendy took a slightly alternative route, adapting Love & Nourish into a café based in Prahran - the ultimate destination for health-minded, weight-concious, and environmentally aware individuals, with all of the guesswork taken out for discerning taste buds! Love & Nourish now provides a range of perfectly portioned, fresh, raw, seasonal and organic meals, created to taste great, while holding beneficial nutritional value to maintain and restore a healthy gut (inner health), using the highest quality product, such as; fermented vegetables, bone broth and grass-fed beef, to balance good fats with carbohydrates and protein. By using probiotics where possible (in the form of fermented vegetables and bone broth), a healthy gut can be attained, making for a healthy immune system and healthy emotional health. The digestive system is one of the largest organs in the body and many diseases spring straight from the gut. Fermented foods help strengthen your immune system so that you can fight any disease or illness and increase your chance of overall health. In most of us our physical health begins and ends with the way our gut functions and the way we support it. The aims are taste and feel good food – no guilt, with lots of love as Wendy’s main ingredient! To compliment these perfectly portioned meals, Love & Nourish offers essential health-concious beverages, such as; kobucha teas, cold press juices and superfood smoothie varieties. Raw treats are also available to indulge in, using fresh, wholesome ingredients to nurture your body, while giving you a natural boost that does not compromise your daily food intake. Wendy has ensured that Love & Nourish compliments her other two offerings; BootyFit Workout and RAWRRR Nutrition, that showcase her passion that reinforces the importance of whole foods and balanced diets - where natural is better to achieve real results in health and fitness. Start at the outer third of the eye using small strokes along the lash line.

In celebration of Lancôme’s 80 years of French Beauty, Kerrie Hess has designed customised illustrations exclusively for Lancôme. In 2015, Lancôme will launch a series of Grandiôse makeup sets and limited edition cosmetic bags for all your beauty essentials, all showcasing Kerrie’s incredible illustrations.

STEP 3

CLEAN DEFINITION EYE LOOK SET $89

Split the eye into three zones: outer third, middle and inner third. Start on the outer third and apply Grandiôse in a zig zag motion from the root of the lash to the tip.

On counter date: 25th January 2015 The clean definition eyeliner look is elegant and classic, accentuating the natural shape of the eye.

Using the tip of the liner, make a small mark at the outer corner of the eye to determine where the liner will finish

STEP 2:

Following the same application move to the inner corner of the eye and join the lines together.

STEP 4

The look is easy to wear and is perfect for during the day or at work.

Did you know? The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists mobile phones as possibly carcinogenic to humans. They say further research is required. WHO recommends that you limit the use of your mobile phone and the duration of your calls. They also advise that you should use your mobile phone in areas of good reception, so the phone is working at reduced power. With Safe-T-Fone you can feel safe and be safe everytime you use your mobile phone.

Only the original Safe-T-Fone® has been independently tested by NATA and has proven to reduce the transmission of RFR by 100%. Safe-T-Fone uses the transmission of sound waves, not electronic signals, to travel up the inert acoustic silicon tube to deliver ‘safe sound’ into the user’s ear. Correctly used, Safe-T-Fone allows the user to operate a mobile phone at arms length, reducing exposure to radiation to a non harmful background level. The Safe-T-Fone Acoustic Earphone does not interfere with the mobile phone’s performance, by diverting or shielding its signal, and allows the phone to operate normally.

3 WAYS TO LISTEN BETTER If there’s one skill worth emphasising it’s the often underrated skill of listening. Thousands of hours of listening to stories of business people has helped me develop this skill. What was that? What is she saying? That’s right listening. While I am by no means perfect at it (and still work on it daily) this is clearly a skill worth mastering. Here are some ideas on listening for you to try.

UP LEVEL YOUR LISTENING Just when you believe you’re listening is ok, what if I told you there’s another level? Further more, better listening can not only increase team engagement (& be a reason people stay) it can also win you much more business. How? Read on.

SOUNDBITE LISTENING TODAY In our world of selfies, insty, linkedin, facebook & youtube, our concentration spans are shortening. We now live in a world of sound bites and page scrolls. Sad, but true. Next time you’re in a train, at the airport, in the foyer of a building or at a cafe, take note of where people’s eyes are. They’re on screens. This is why the next 3 ways can be a differentiator for you and your business.

#3 LOOK AT THE PERSON... Eye contact is hard enough for some people as it is. And today, we’re rapidly losing the art of looking at people. As such we have to re-train ourselves to look at the eyes of those we speak with. Looking other human beings in the eye is a lost art. When we do look at someone they feel recognised, they feel known, they feel ‘gotten’, ‘listened to’ and heard. When with someone, a large part of the hearing experience is looking at the person. If you do this one thing when being spoken to, you’ll have an edge over the average bear. Eye contact builds trust. And we all want to do business with people we trust. Look at who you speak with. It’s a little thing, that makes a big difference.

#2 DROP THE FILTERS… We all have life experiences and pre-conceived ideas. Using these as our filters also blocks new learning. If we see others who have had different experiences to us as ‘wrong’, we can never learn, we can never grow, we can never understand varying perspectives.

When we drop our filters, we hear differently. Imagine car gears. Be in neutral when you listen. You’ll be amazed what else you pick up. When you listen, minus the filters, every day is a massive learning opportunity. New insights that lead to new thinking, new solutions, new possibilities, new business.

#1 LISTEN AUTHENTICALLY… Authentic is a fancy way of saying ‘keep it real’. That is, don’t pretend you’re listening, don’t look past the person then pretend you’re listening. When was the last time you sat with one of your team and were really with them? Really checked in on how they were doing? Asked a question and then sat and listened deeply to the response? If you’re not in the mood to listen and are ready to end the discussion, best to just say so. Excuse yourself politely with, “I must wrap this up now”. This is much better than pretending you’re listening. Listening Authentically means showing up to listen and not speak. Being there and intune completely with what the person is saying. When we listen we really do learn. Learning comes from listening and observing. When we invest our effort to really hear, we collect data-points and insight that we may have missed before. We ‘get’ new things and so this being the case we automatically gain an edge.

#THE REMINDER…. People don’t leave companies they leave bosses. Clients don’t leave brands, they leave bad experiences with people. Most of the time these incidences happen because someone felt unheard. Someone being ‘unheard’ can be avoided with better listening. If you decide to become a better listener you automatically develop a communication edge. If your whole company listens more powerfully, the whole business has an edge. This can be a very low cost unique selling proposition and differentiator. Better listening underpins client dedication, high impact customer service and client care.

THE WRAP…. So wrapping up, here are three things to help you listen better:-

How can we really hear another person’s perspective, when we’re filtering what they’re saying through our own experience?

Listen Authentically, Drop The Filters, Look At The Person. These three ways will make you a better listener and this means being known as someone good to work with. If you try it and it works, let me know. I’d like to hear your experiences.

#HASHTAG WHAT IS A #HASHTAG IN SOCIAL MEDIA? A hashtag is that symbol that sits on your keyboard just above the number 3. It has been transformed from the Number symbol and implemented for use in social media. The # acts as a prefix to words or a collection of words like a phrase to collate items of interest and same association, therefore making other posts easy to find across all social media.

HOW DOES THE #HASHTAG WORK? The # or hashtag works by preceding these words and they must be without spaces; ie; #CharlieHebdo or #charliehebdo or #AustralianOpen or #australianopen.......Capitals will not affect the search of any posts, however it can be set up with separate capitals to assist if you want that association......For me, it is far easier to drop all capitals unless it has branding issues associated with it like #MercedesBenz. You can also associate and use the prefix of # to a phrase or longer associated words, like #thankgoditsfriday without spaces. Or this can also be set up as #TGIF. Once this # has been set up, then you can search for other associated posts across all social media today and find related articles. The # allows us to create order and filing of information on the World Wide Web in Social Media.

technology

HOW WAS THE # CREATED TO CLUMP TOGETHER WORDS?

WHAT OTHER SYMBOLS CAN BE USED IN # OR HASHTAGGING?

The # use was created on the social media platform of Twitter back in 2007. Chris Messiner is a developer and he tweeted that Twitter should start clumping posts together by using the # in front of those key words or phrases. Initially Twitter actually rejected the idea, however late in 2007, some American Journalists began using the clumping together of # posts, and Twitter relented and so it all began. The rest is history. Users could see what was trending for the day and be all over current live events in an instant, searching using key words and phrases with the # in front of them. It is a remarkable tool that has to be explored to see its true value, so try searching for posts with the hashtag in front of your keywords and interests, and see what appears.

As stated earlier, you can never have a space between words in your prefixed words or phrases. #soitalwayshastolooklikethis #iknowthatyoualreadyknewthis #australianopen #australianopenisexciting

THE USE OF THE #HASHTAG ACROSS ALL SOCIAL MEDIA TODAY. All social media platforms in general now have adopted the use of the # as a grouping mechanism, and users of social media have taken to it in a storm, and apply the # across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Klout, Vine and many more. Now the # cross pollinates across all social media platforms and you can search for the same term on multiple platforms keeping everything that you want to know about in the one spot.

You can also use numbers in your #18wheeler #90210stars and can post and search for relevant items. Twitter operates best with about only three or 3 hashtags in the one post, and the same with Facebook and Pinterest, however I am aware that SocialCam, Klout, Vine and Instagram work better with more than three hostags in the same post. The optimum level for Instagram is approximately 5 #hashtags. Start searching around in all social media platforms today by using a # in front of your personal interest and latest events and you will be amazed how brilliant this search and storage mechanism is, go on, you just might be surprised.
