NEWS AWC SUMMER DAY OUT We are pleased to be able to announce details of the Abingdon Works Centre Summer Day Out to be held on August 22 2021 at Chawton House in the picturesque village of Chawton near Alton, Hampshire. Chawton House is a beautiful Grade Two listed Elizabethan Manor house with formal gardens set in its own grounds once owned by Jane Austen’s brother Edward and referred to by her as the “Great House”. It is currently run as an historic property and also houses period exhibitions, a shop and the research library of the Centre for the Study of Early Women’s Writing 1600 to 1830. Parking will be in the Church Meadow immediately adjacent to Chawton House and the Church which also includes the large recently refurbished Dyer’s Barn which will be available to provide shelter if needed (from the blazing sun - we hope). Bacon butties (10.00am-12.00pm only at the Tea Shed) and refreshments (hot and cold drinks and cakes) will be available to buy from the Tea Shed and the Old Kitchen Tea Room throughout the day. For those who require more substantial fare it is recommended that you bring your own picnic. For those who wish to stretch their legs the Jane Austen House and Museum (where Jane Austen lived) (pre-booking required https:// janeaustens.house/visit/visitor-info/) and The Greyfriar pub are a 10 minute (0.4 miles) walk away. A voluntary donation of £5 (or more if you’re feeling generous) will be requested at the gate to cover the AWC costs in organising the event. Tickets for the House and Gardens, both of which are well worth a visit, costs £10 per person and give you access to the property for a full 12 months. For the time being, although legal restrictions on social distancing have been removed, Chawton House are continuing to operate a booking system for visits to the House and entry will not be available on the day without a booking. Entry times are 15 minutes apart and only six people are allowed to book on each slot, starting from 10.00am. Bookings must be made directly with Chawton House at https://chawton-house.arttickets.org.uk/ Garden visits will be available on the day at a cost of £6 per person.
