White Lodge, Oxted, Surrey White Lodge is a stunning white-rendered modernist villa with vast open living spaces and extensive glazing in mature grounds with feature swimming pool. The dream was to build an ultra-contemporary, sustainable home in the heart of leafy Surrey on the secluded site of an existing pre-fab bungalow ‒ a bold design statement, far removed from the pitched roof architecture of the area.

The Lighthouse is a beachfront property on the south coast of England. It is a super insulated, luxury 3 bedroom house sitting in a beautiful water side location enjoying stunning views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

The site is enclosed between two neighbouring buildings and a 7m high embankment to the north; of which pavement and street access sits at the top. This access, to the roof level of the property, and the one-directional view over the beach, English Channel and Isle of Wight to the south, has led to an

interesting design which takes inspiration from traditional beach pavilions such as the De La Warr in Bexhill a little further along the coast. The design concept was to maximize the building’s width, so every key room enjoys expansive views of the vista. All bathrooms and utility

spaces run at the rear of the property, allowing the view to be continuous for all living spaces. The house sits 7 metres below road level with the roof acting as a parking deck for 3 cars. Visually the from the central concrete core, terminating in large cantilevers that provide shade

access and acting as a this enclosure is triggered by a barometer providing instantaneous information to This illuminated glass cube sits on top of the concrete glass glows to indicate local weather conditions: green

Loft Legs give householders a warm home and a useful loft.

ANCON completes the CE Marking of its product portfolio

Housing trust selects energy-efficient communal heating for comfort and performance

Compressing insulation with storage items in the loft can reduce its thermal effectiveness by over 50%.

Stainless steel fixings specialist, ANCON, has completed the CE Marking requirements for its full range of brick support systems, windposts, cavity wall ties, bed joint reinforcement, lintels and tension bar systems, confirming legal compliance with the new EU Construction Products Regulation.

Peaks & Plains Housing Trust has installed a communal heating system to its £3.7 million Hunters Gate development in Handforth, Cheshire. The project consists of 36 two-bedroomed apartments built to offer tenants affordable and energy-efficient homes.

Installed in the loft, Loft Legs allow a simple storage deck to be constructed above the height of the insulation, maintaining its energy-saving benefits, a key factor when 40 per cent of a household’s heating is lost through the roof. Loft Legs – which featured in an episode of BBC Television’s DIY SOS filmed last year – are manufactured in the UK from recycled materials, are easy to install, ultra strong and lightweight. Loft Legs are sold in boxes of 12 and are available instore and online at Toolstation, Wickes, and select builders’ merchants nationally. For more information visit – www.loftleg.com Or call: Tel 01282 861001 Enq. 101

Ancon has published a new 12-page guide explaining this new regulation and identifying which products it affects. It includes a useful Q&A section to help stockists, engineers and contractors understand their obligations and how Ancon can help.

The new system is made up of five Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan® CAHV air source heat pumps, providing the properties with a total of 200kW of renewable, cost-effective underfloor heating. It also takes care of the tenants’ domestic hot water requirements whilst keeping the Housing Trust’s carbon emissions to a minimum.

The guide, together with the company’s Declaration of Performance portfolio and factory production control certification, is available from www.ancon.co.uk/CE.

The Ecodan CAHV air source heat pump monobloc system can operate singularly, or form part of a multiple unit system and its scalability makes it ideal for projects of any size.

Hard copies can be obtained by contacting Ancon on info@ancon.co.uk or by telephoning 0114 275 5224.

Award winning waterproofing! Two Property Care Association (PCA) award-winning companies have joined forces to waterproof the basement at a major residential refurbishment site in central London. Triton, which won the PCA’s Innovation and Sustainability award for the pioneering subscription of its systems to the new NBS BIM Library, supplied the waterproofing system components. These included 1000 m2 of cavity drain membranes - which were installed to the inner surface of all exterior walls, Aquachannel drainage conduit which was installed to the perimeter, and associated sumps and pumps. The design of the drainage system was based on a gravity feed to existing outlets. Together these components provided an effective Type C waterproofing system as defined by BS 8102.

Design Buy Build

The system was installed by Preservation Treatments, winners of the PCA’s Contractor of the Year award. Following completion of the cavity drain membrane system, 300mm of insulation was laid to the floor before the installation of a 20mm floor membrane, which was then sealed to the wall membrane and a screed finish.

12

An independent dry lining system was then put in place to form the walls of the apartments. Preservation Treatments will also carry out external waterproofing works in the new build section of the development later in the project. BREEAM Excellent Student Accommodation 3,000 metres of Ancon brick support angle and over 800 Ancon windposts have been supplied to the construction of new student accommodation at the University of Liverpool’s Chatham Street campus. The project comprises an East and West block of six and nine storeys respectively and has been designed, by Stride Treglown, to be BREEAM Excellent. Construction of the attractive façade, thought to be one of the largest brick packages awarded in the UK in recent years, involved the support of masonry at every floor level by an Ancon stainless steel support system. The support angles feature slots in some sections to allow lintels to be fixed to the underside at window openings, and are radiussed in other locations to support curved brickwork. On a riverside site in Worcester city centre, this is a highly sustainable building and the first purpose built joint-use library in the UK, serving both the University of Worcester and the general public. The Hive emerged from a groundbreaking partnership development to create a fully integrated public and university library, new to the UK and highly innovative internationally. It incorporates the county archives and record office, a local history centre, the county’s archaeology service and a multi-agency customer service centre. The Hive is a cultural, learning and information centre of excellence promoting lifelong learning, engendering social inclusion and raising aspirations for the whole community, regardless of age, background, or ability. The aspiration is for the Hive to become a destination for Worcester and the wider region. The redevelopment of this area

connects the city centre with the new university campus creating an accessible route from the city centre to the river. The project team developed an innovative way of utilising parametric modelling to explore design ideas (winning first prize at the International Bentley Awards for “Innovation in Generative Design in the process). As a result we were able to manipulate the form within the boundaries of the structural and environmental constraints, resulting in a design which takes out 250 tonnes of steel from the roof replacing it with laminated timber and saving an estimated 2 months of design work.

‘’The Partnership would like to place on record our sincere thanks to you and your team for the outstanding contribution you have all made to this landmark facility. It has been a pleasure to work with a team who have shared our ideals and objectives and produced a quality, design led solution to meeting our needs. In my long experience I have seen very few projects which could match this one for real team working and you should take great credit for setting the standards for others to follow. To finish such a complex and outstanding building on time and on budget shows that by working together our industry can achieve some really great things.’’ Peter Parkes, Head of Property Services, Worcestershire County Council

This has saved 2000 tonnes of CO2 compared to the concrete/steel option and has transformed the character of the interior. The copper-alloy, gold-shingled form draws inspiration from both the historic kilns of the Royal Worcester works and the undulating ridgeline of the Malvern Hills. The structure incorporates solid laminated timber roof cones, the forms of which have been generated to optimise day lighting and natural ventilation throughout the building. The central atrium is

PAINTS, PRIMERS AND SPECIALISED COATINGS

Paint that protects us as well as the surface Why does my client want anti-bacterial paint and which one should I use? Chris Langham of Coo-Var Technical Services discusses. We all know that the spread of germs can cause major problems, and not just in hospitals. Whether it is for a floor or a wall, in a classroom, a clinic or a toilet, anti-bacterial or anti-microbial paint can help stop the spread of infections and illnesses by killing the germs it comes into contact with. How does it work? Most of the products available will use proven silver ion technology that inhibits the growth of most microbes or bacteria. When they can’t grow, they die. I can’t speak for other manufactures paints but ours creates a tough washable surface that we got tested before launch. The samples were tested over 24 hours to JIS Z 2801:2000 (Japanese Industrial Standard) and there was greater than 99% reduction of the initial population, in effect, when they can’t breed, they die. A regular wash down of the surface ensures that it is hygienic. Which one is the right one? It’s not as difficult as you may think to choose the right product for you. It will obviously depend on where the paint is going and what wear it will see. Anti-bacterial and anti-microbial are interchangeable phrases that mean the same thing. So having put that to rest, there are basically two categories: single pack and two pack products. Both have benefits and fall backs:

John Fredericks Plastics long term partnership with MACO continues.

John Fredericks Managing Director Steve Darkins & Production Director Alan Barnard with MACO’s Kevin Whiting Managing Director, Andy Omand, Sales and Marketing Manager, Craig Bryant Product, Services and Innovation Manager and Gareth Turner Area Sales Manager NE Established in 1970, John Fredericks Plastics have been a close customer partner of MACO UK for the last 16 years. Their focus to provide their loyal customer base with innovative products and services underpins their respected reputation. The company’s management team attribute the company’s longevity and enviable growth to its focus upon quality, delivery and innovation. MACO have built their customer base using these values and by using only the highest Austrian manufacturing methods and materials, designing and creating secure window and door hardware to provide the industry with long life products that exceed industry standards. No cheap ‘me too’ alternatives that seem to flood the market causing all parties a lifelong hassle of product failure, be it through poor quality or not living up to claims regarding their burglary attack properties. MACO therefore seemed an obvious choice for John Frederick’s Plastics looking for a reliable and competent

partner to supply casement products. Their decision has been further enhanced by registration to MACO’s ever popular MACO Secure scheme. The scheme guarantees to pay back the homeowner’s insurance excess in the unlikely event of a break-in through a window fitted with MACO hardware. John Fredericks Plastics have been using the MACO MK1 shootbolt espagnolette for the last sixteen years and recently decided to commit to the new MACO M-SPAG, a telescopic shootbolt espagnolette system which was one of the many highlights at this year’s FiT Show in Telford in April. Managing Director for John Fredericks Plastics Steve Darkin said ‘’John Fredericks Plastics Ltd part of the A&B Glass Group are pleased to announce a new deal cementing its long standing trading relationship of over 16 Years with MACO UK, with the launch of the MACO M-SPAG. Additional bi-directional locking points around the centre of the window enhance the security of an

already industry leading product, the MACO MK1 shootbolt espagnolette. It’s sure to improve what is already a great portfolio of products.’’ The new M-SPAG telescopic shootbolt comes with a ten year product warranty and is included as part of the MACO Secure scheme offered by John Fredericks Plastics. A product designed for the UK and performance tested to European Industry standards the M-SPAG telescopic shootbolt espagnolette has been created by listening to Fabricators like John Fredericks Plastics. DuoGuard against floods, from Bowater Doors

Reynaers in Wedgewood Court Development

As the threat of flooding in the UK increases, industry-leading Bowater Doors has unveiled an improved design for its flood defence door. The DuoGuard range is being relaunched following enhancements to its design. Bowater Doors, a company of The VEKA UK Group, is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of energy-efficient composite doors.

Situated on the busy Holloway Road, North London is Wedgewood Court student accommodation, home to many a student of London Metropolitan University.

The DuoGuard extends all the energy efficiency, security and durability benefits of the Duo range to create a genuine double rebate flood defence door. Twin compression seals and a 12-point multi-locking system combine to provide unrivalled protection against flooding. Homeowners can design their own door to reflect the style of their home by using the Bowater Doors online tool at www.frontdoors.uk.com. or visit – www.system10aluminium.co.uk

Enq. 124

There are three brochures and an in-depth commercial spec guide to support the newly relaunched Bowater collection. The three ranges include: the standard ‘Mono PLUS’ Bowater composite door, the highly-specified ‘DUO’ double rebate range and the premium ‘DUO Diamond’ range of doors with decorative triple-glazing options.

Due to the building being constructed adjacent to the railway and tube station, and the frontages facing the noisy Holloway Road, potential vibration and noise emissions had to be taken into account, with particular reference to glazing. Several Reynaers Aluminium systems were used throughout the development, ideally suited to offset the prevailing conditions, including Vision 50 doors, Eco window and the highly versatile CW50 curtain walling system. Trade Counters launches new website

Holiday Lock from Era increases home security Door and window hardware specialist ERA has introduced a novel locking system to boost security when properties are periodically unoccupied – adding an extra level of protection when going on holiday. Aptly named Holiday Lock, the new system is a deadbolt mechanism which complements the existing multipoint lock. Capable of exceeding the requirements of PAS 24 2012, the unique aspect of the lock is its secondary singlesided locking point - with no escutcheon on the interior side of the door, it can only be operated from the outside. The ERA Holiday Lock offers equivalent functionality to a BS 10621 sash lock, with the additional benefits of multi point locking. PDS open doors for new youth centre and library Performance Doorset Solutions (PDS) have recently supplied 34 of their Oak veneer fire doors and frames for a new library and Youth Connexions facility in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. The brief for the library project required the doors to incorporate glazed fanlights which adhered to fire regulations, as well as specifically designing the doorframes to fit into a variety of unusual opening spaces. It was also essential for the doors to fit in with the overall aesthetics and modern design of the building. PDS internal fire doors are FD30 and FD60 rated and are available in single and double leaf doors. As with all PDS products these doors are made to order, which meant that they were able to manufacture each door and frame to ensure that they met the brief and were the perfect fit for the unusual doorways. The Cube

Client: Birmingham Development Company Ltd Status: Built Area: 42,000m²/452,000ft² Location: Birmingham, UK Sectors: Hotel, Mixed use, Residential,Retail The Cube is one of Make’s largest buildings to date, made up of a broad mix of uses including offices, apartments, retail units, restaurants, an automated car park, a boutique hotel, spa facilities and the city’s first rooftop restaurant. The striking geometrical form of this 23-storey, £100 million building has remained unchanged from initial concept to completion. Its design makes reference to Birmingham’s industrial heritage, celebrating the contrasts between heavy industrial metal working and hand-crafted jewellery making. The cladding of gold and bronze-coloured aluminium panels are combined with glass to create an intricate design on the building’s exterior. This is complemented by an elegant and decorative metallic fretwork screen across the open side of the courtyard. The proportion of glass-to-aluminium varies from facade to facade, with greater solidity on the southern elevations to limit solar gain. The geometry and materials of the courtyard are an unexpected contrast to the exterior; glass panels twist upwards through the central courtyard, forming a dramatic full-height open atrium. This twisting geometry ‘explodes’ at the top to form the angular rooftop space which crowns the building.

Harvesting communally Rainharvesting Systems Ltd. devised and supplied the rainwater harvesting scheme on a social housing development in Cheltenham for Markey Construction. The inclusion of the rainwater harvesting enabled the client, Cottsway Housing Association, to achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The system is designed around a single 18,000-litre tank supplying all 13 properties on the site. The harvested water is pumped to a small individual header tank in each dwelling. The header tanks are designed to always take water from the rainwater store as long as it is available, but will then automatically revert to running from mains water if needed. This provides an ideal solution for such a situation, as each property has its own independent back-up from the mains water supply. Rainharvesting Systems Ltd. A replacement dwelling within Greenbelt and Area of Special Landscape Value our proposal is designed to maintain the important features of the existing site, allowing the residents to integrate with their surroundings, reflecting the topography of the site right through to the functional layout of the dwelling, and maintaining the mature landscape so it can continue to thrive. The new design steps down with the fall of the site and uses this level change in conjunction with the modularization of the house to create more intimate areas which emphasize and echo the topographical context of the site. It is proposed to use white render, timber louvres and elegant glazing systems that respond to the building’s surroundings, blurring the division between inside-andout, whilst also creating light modernist forms that add to the character and architectural appearance of the proposal. In terms of addressing issues of sustainability, we would look to utilize locally sourced materials and carefully consider our selection of construction materials, going as far as using natural paints and stains both internally and externally. In addition, by investigating the integration of heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems, we are further aiding the provision of an energy efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. We have created for our client, a building of high quality design and architecture to form a fresh modern single dwelling that respects the sensitive nature of the area and brings back a coherent layout integrated with the site while presenting a modern but timeless design concept.

Floors & Flooring SuperPan TECH P5 and P6 Structural Panels: You will not find a stronger one Engineered wood products are developed to fulfill specific requirements of different industrial sectors. Among these, perhaps the most demanding specification is that of structural use. To meet these heavyduty standards, FINSA has created SuperPan TECH P5 and P6, unique and exclusive products, protected by patent nr. 99966972.4. These high performance boards are suitable for a wide range of structural applications. Just like the other members of the SuperPan product family, they combine two outer layers of MDF with a particleboard core. The main advantages of SuperPan TECH are: High resistance: Its improved bending strength coupled with its high modulus of elasticity make it the right product for the most demanding load situations. On the other hand, it allows the use of lower thicknesses than those used in traditional

chipboard solutions, which means a significant cost saving while ensuring the same performance. Surface quality: SuperPan’s smooth and compact surface is ideal for coating with vinyl, linoleum, ceramics or epoxy paints. At the same time, the compact layer of the wood fibre on the faces provides greater impact resistance, preventing from surface damages and defects. Complete range: plain and coated boards specially developed for these applications, with the most suitable formats for the building industry, for a maximum optimization of the material.

colors with the reverse side in white melamine, providing a better reflection of light, which is especially important for industrial interior spaces. FINSA has carried out extensive testings at the University of Edinburgh and at AITIM (Spain) which showed that SuperPan Tech P5 and P6 clearly outperform competitive products available in the market. In this way, this unique product is becoming a milestone for structural panels for both its performance and its cost/efficiency ratio. As with all FINSA products, they are available with FSC or PEFC certifications.

Forbo plays it safe and sound with Surestep Wood Decibel Providing R10 slip resistance underfoot and 17dB impact sound reduction, Forbo’s Surestep Wood Decibel range presents a desirable flooring option for projects with multiple application areas. For specifiers and end users alike, the enhanced range can be considered as both an acoustic and safety flooring solution – working perfectly as part of an integrated flooring design. Unlike traditional safety flooring ranges, Surestep Wood Decibel is also the first multiple width safety floor - uniquely available in 2, 3 and 4m widths – suiting a wide range of applications. Thanks to the floor covering’s dimensional stability, areas of up to 20m2 in residential locations can be loose laid, helping to reduce the overall cost of installation. In larger commercial installations, the availability of different widths means that welding requirements may be substantially reduced saving time and money. Incorporating aluminium oxide particles in its wear layer to provide sustainable slip resistance and maintain the clarity of design, Surestep Wood Decibel meets both the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and UK Slip Resistance Group (UKSRG) requirements. The product also features a PUR Pearl finish that ensures an easy to clean surface, requiring a simple cleaning and maintenance regime and keeping costs to a minimum. Surestep Wood Decibel now offers twelve different wood choices including two new modern all-over wood designs. Seven of the popular colourways have been specifically designed to match the design effects available in the standard Surestep Wood range, allowing for a totally consistent appearance and safety rating to be achieved across areas of a building which might have different acoustic requirements. Paul Rogers, Technical Specification Manager at Forbo Flooring Systems comments: “Where there are multiple application areas, specifiers and end users should never need to compromise on performance. Choosing a reputable manufacturer with the capability to combine different attributes into one effective flooring solution will ensure peace of mind in every way. “Forbo has over 50 years’ experience in the manufacture of acoustic floor coverings and a long standing history in the manufacture of HSE compliant safety flooring which offers best in class performance. As a result, customers can be confident that Surestep Wood Decibel will enable them to achieve reassuringly safe, quiet and aesthetically attractive interiors in a wide range of commercial, education, healthcare and retail applications.”

The Glazing Ombudsman Scheme (TGO) was established in 2011 following concerns rising from industry and government over the lack of any independent service supporting consumer complaints within the glazing sector. These concerns were compounded by the fact that Building Regulations and existing Competent Person Schemes did not cover the full range of glazing products. The scope of TGO covers the installation of all glazing products, i.e windows, doors, porches and conservatories as well as roofline products such as gutters, soffits and cladding. TGO has been independently assessed and accredited by the Ombudsman Association to ensure it meets their operating criteria, becoming a registered member in April 2012. Acceptance for Ombudsman Association membership is based upon meeting their rules and five key criteria; independence; effectiveness; fairness; openness & transparency and public accountability. A full list of approved Ombudsman is available at www.ombudsmanassociation.org TGO is a Not for Profit company and is neither a regulator of the Industry nor a consumer guardian. It is independent, impartial and provides a FREE service to consumers. The purpose of TGO is to provide a binding result to a dispute between a consumer and a registered business without the costly involvement of the legal system. For companies, membership of TGO demonstrates commitment to quality & fairness and is also likely to satisfy the requirements for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Scheme (ADR) that are being introduce in early 2015. TGO has a Register of Businesses who operate in accordance with its Code of Practice, giving their customers confidence and peace of mind. To find a registered business in your area visit www.glazingombudsman.com/home/consumer When the ombudsman investigates a complaint they can either uphold (find it in the favour of the person who has complained) or not uphold it (find that the organisation complained about has not behaved wrongly). If the complaint is upheld, the ombudsman can recommend a financial award of compensation of up to a maximum of ÂŁ25,000; although in practice this is likely to be much less. Acceptance of this award is full and final settlement of the dispute. Should a consumer choose to reject the award they may still take further action in County Court however the findings of the Ombudsman are likely to be considered by the court and could influence the outcome. The Glazing Ombudsman (TGO) offers a simple, hassle-free way to resolve a dispute concerning the installation of conservatories, windows, porches, doors and roofline products. Kawneer glazing is a pioneering curtain call in Glasgow Curtain walling from Kawneer features on a Scottish office block redevelopment. The first office block to mixed-use conversion in Scotland to benefit from the Government’s Business Premises Renovation Allowances Scheme has been reclad with Kawneer’s modular curtain walling system for its logistical and quality benefits.

The aluminium system supplier’s unitised or off-site AA®201 curtain walling is now the facade of the 210-bedroom Premier Inn hotel on the corner of West Nile Street and a pedestrianised section of Sauchiehall Street, one of Glasgow’s most popular shopping areas.

“The design was well-received and the level of finish control could be achieved with the off-site system helping to maintain the design quality through to the build. It helps to break up the mass and accentuate the verticality.”

One of the first high rise buildings in the city when it was erected in the 1960s, the former St Andrew House was a 2,500²m mixed-use tower block comprising 15 floors of offices above a two-storey podium of commercial and retail units.

The Kawneer curtain walling has helped to visually soften what was a utilitarian structure, and connection between the podium and tower has been achieved through the use of irregular strips of recessed windows which alternate with external LED lighting helping to create that clear vertical emphasis ... and a landmark building that is highly visible day and night for miles around. It stands on the former site of the Lyric Theatre which was destroyed by fire in 1953 and owing to the fact that the central area of Glasgow is built on a steep drumlin, near whose summit St Andrew House stands, its top-floor rooms are in fact the highest hotel rooms in Glasgow, even more so than the luxury suites on the 20th floor of the Glasgow Hilton.

But recent developments, including the Royal Concert Hall and Buchanan Galleries as well as the redeveloped Cowcaddens, only served to exaggerate its outdated appearance which a £27.5million investment featuring Kawneer’s curtain walling has now rectified. The 14,500m² project involved stripping the podium, which remained occupied during the work and is now the hotel’s reception and restaurant, and the 15 stories above back to their reinforced concrete structure and refurbishing and recladding them with the Kawneer glazing system. This was installed by Kawneer-approved specialist sub-contractor Charles Henshaw & Son for main contractor Mansell Construction to a design by Ryder Architecture for developer Regent Capital Plc. Project architect Stewart McKenna said: “Our brief was to create a visually inspiring landmark building but the construction had limited access so we specified the Kawneer system to make use of unitised offsite production.

Charles Henshaw managing director Tom Lamb said: “St Andrew House was a logistically complex project, with installation taking place on a very tight site above working shop units, which made unitised curtain wall the best option.” Part of a £42million package to build nine Premier Inns, St Andrew House was the largest and most expensive and brings the number of such hotels in Glasgow to four. The BPRAS scheme was introduced to encourage the conversion and renovation of empty properties to help urban renewal in key areas.

Increase space in the home

In light of recent research from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) which says a lack of space is one of the main causes of dissatisfaction with the home*, P C Henderson offers advice to help projects gain vital space through the specification of cleverly designed sliding door gear systems. P C Henderson’s solutions can increase the interior floor space available by the use of sliding door gear systems which provide an easy access solution that is

versatile and silent in use. They can be used as room dividers to create a flexible living space as well as for wardrobe doors which helps create space and allow more light into a property by opening up rooms. In addition, pocket doors glide neatly into the wall cavity to provide a modern aesthetic for dividing rooms or for use with en-suite bathrooms and cupboard doors. With these options, space is created in contrast to a swing door which impacts on the room once opened. In a house with ten 3ft internal doors, up to an additional 70sq ft of usable space can be released in the home by eliminating the room needed for it to swing and function. Andrew Royle, UK Commercial Director at PC Henderson commented: “We’ve been manufacturing sliding door gear systems for over 90 years in the UK now and our British engineered designs offer builders the right combination of high performance and space

saving solutions ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects which are very easy to install . Being clever with the space available is key to creating a comfortable home to live in. “Our sliding and folding door hardware systems are perfect for saving space, maximizing door opening widths, adjusting room sizes and increasing safety by removing an intrusive swing door. We offer a solution wherever a sliding or folding door can work.” Versatile and silent, the Husky 50kg and 100kg sliding door systems are ideal for wardrobe doors and room dividers. Tracks are now available in galvanised steel, aluminum or anodised aluminum, coupled with nylon rollers, Husky provides a low maintenance, durable, high quality solution. 'Senior's on the Case' To aid and inspire specifiers during the design process, Senior’s have launched a portfolio of sixteen diverse case studies of projects recently completed in the UK. Projects range from the Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare to the stunning Marks & Spencer flagship Eco Store at Ellesmere Port. Many of the projects have achieved a BREAAM rating and use a significant amount of glazing, proving that when correctly designed, in conjunction with high thermal efficiency doors, windows and curtain wall framing, glazing actually contributes to sustainability. Designers can specify either high performance aluminium or the ground breaking aluminium timber composite system, ‘Hybrid’. Both profiles are available in a wide range of systems from Senior’s to accommodate any design requirements.

Design Buy Build

To ensure optimised use of high performance glazing coupled with aluminium or ‘Hybrid’ profiles, it is important to seek advice at the early concept design stages to ensure both insulation and solar gain characteristics of the design are positive for the buildings useful life and contribute towards a sustainable high BREAAM result. Senior’s provide dedicated specialists to advise on selecting the best products to suit any project requirements.

48

Further case studies are already being produced which will demonstrate Senior’s experience across a wide range of building types. It is hoped that all case studies will offer inspiration and advice to specifiers. Case studies are available in both PDF and printed form, PDF copies can be downloaded from the company’s website at www.seniorarchitectural.co.uk Enq. 146

White Lodge is a stunning whiterendered modernist villa with vast open living spaces and extensive glazing in mature grounds with feature swimming pool. The dream was to build an ultracontemporary, sustainable home in the heart of leafy Surrey on the secluded site of an existing pre-fab bungalow – a bold design statement, far removed from the pitched roof architecture of the area. Having sold their listed manor house a few miles away, the build would mark a new chapter in the owners’ life exchanging traditional grandeur for a highly sustainable contemporary home designed for easy living and entertaining. The build was not without its challenges: Tandridge Council had a long standing planning policy that new builds should match the traditional vernacular of the area. Our clients did not want planning restrictions to preclude them pushing the boundaries of contemporary design to create an iconic home they could be proud of. Another challenge was the sloping topography of the site which threatened to limit the overall footprint of the house and surrounding landscapes. Designs of the site incorporating 480m2 of living space whilst making the most of its setting and the Surrey Downs beyond.

Furthermore, the house was to be both easy and cost effective to maintain with careful attention to renewable energy sources and sustainable materials. Dyer Grimes Architects won approval of the planners by incorporating a three-tiered structure within the sloping site and maximizing the privacy afforded by surrounding trees. The cantilevered design of the house creates the illusion that the structure is hovering effortlessly in the glass-ended swimming pool below. This combines, to stunning effect, with extensive glazing throughout which draws the surrounding landscape into the house and maximizes views from the It also answers the full brief of the a house to entertain in. Arranged around a generous entrance hall, the main living spaces comprise of large sliding walls which disappear into pockets to allow the living, dining and reception rooms to become one open plan space perfect for hosting parties. The clever structural design and innovative construction methods incorporate slender steel columns, high performance glazing and an advanced insulated render system. It is enhanced by intricate detailing including a shadow gap wrapping

around the building between hardwood panels to complement the crisp white render, and a feature glass and timber stair. Sustainability and low maintenance was also integral to the brief. White Lodge provides 12% of its energy usage from renewable sources. powered by the combination of an air source heat pump, solar hot gas boiler. The result – White running costs of their former 4 acre listed country estate. In the words of the owners:” We set out to push the boundaries of ‘country living’ and create a house in which we could live and entertain effortlessly, and without the ongoing maintenance costs of a period country estate. As soon as we met Dyer Grimes Architects we knew we could realize our dream – but we didn’t envisage that the end result would win us such accolades. Interiors & Interior Design Luxury living on the Côte d’Azur Villa Magnolia – paying homage to modernist art With an almost reticent air, the luxury Villa Magnolia nestles against the slope of the mountain above the Côte d’Azur. And yet, the luxury mansion near the small town of Mougins captivates the eye with the strong linearity of its architecture, reminiscent of the great masters of modernist art, and the discreet touches of the Far East which further accentuate the lightness of the building's structure. Both of these features are carried through to the interior of the mansion. One element that remains constant throughout the interior design on the three floors of the mansion is that all nine bathrooms bear the hallmark of Axor, the designer brand of Hansgrohe SE. Inspired by the diversity of collections and the many different options for individualising the bathroom as a living space, the Polish architects Sotyrys and Aleksander Pantopulos selected products from the Axor collections designed by Philippe Starck, Patricia Urquiola, Jean-Marie Massaud, Antonio Citterio and the Bouroullec brothers. Diversity in design All the bathrooms are located between salons furnished and decorated with design classics ranging from Charles Eames to Arne Jacobsen. High quality in terms of design and materials is combined with sophisticated spatial concepts. The parental bathroom reflects the close connection between nature and comfort that is characteristic of the Axor Massaud collection. The organically shaped bathtub is enclosed in a timber platform, giving the impression of being in a small lake and looking out past the palm and pine trees and onto the medieval town of Mougins on

the hill across the valley. The spacious platform is just one place inviting to rest awhile; others are the outdoor pool on the patio, or the large swimming pool in the landscaped gardens resplendent with the Mediterranean vegetation typical of the South of France. High-quality timbers such as those used for the bathtub in the parental bathroom are a design feature carried right through the entire mansion. Similarly, walls of natural stone such as travertine marble and other kinds of limestone shape both interior and exterior areas of the building. In keeping with Patricia Urquiola’s vision of the bathroom, floor-level windows open out into nature from the bathroom featuring the Axor collection designed by her. An abundance of greenery, spaces bathed in light and a high degree of individuality at the wash basin play a prominent role in the bathroom concept developed by this Spanish designer together with Axor. At Villa Magnolia, the children’s bathroom furnished with colorful patterns harmoniously divides into a bathroom for two.

The value placed on design and state-of-the-art technology is evident not least in the salon bar in the basement, complete with home cinema and billiards, right next to the sauna, gym and the guest bedrooms. The adjoining bathrooms reproduce the spatial concepts developed in collaborations with Philippe Starck, Antonio Citterio as well as Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Revitalising pleasure is delivered by the showerheads from the Axor Shower Collection, which in the master bathroom feature not once, but twice. Lush wall claddings of whole bamboo stems also take up the theme of nature in this bathroom – as does the illuminated Japanese garden elsewhere on the grounds. Villa Magnolia, completed in 2011 and nestling amongst cypress and olive trees, discreetly conceals the luxury inside. Find out more about Axor on www.hansgrohe.com www.facebook.com/axor.design Enq. 160

“The List” is the most highly populated district of Hannover, in the view of many, it is also the city´s most culturally diverse quarter. This is the area where the residential building cooperative Gartenheim eG this year renovated a multi-family residence which is home to a total of 18 tenants. Originally built in 1957, in the 1980´s this house was insulated with an external composite thermal insulation system (ETICS) and rendered in a light beige colour. Described as “dreary, uninspired and as boring as a hundred other houses in the surrounding area” by Dr Günter Haese, Director of the residential building co-operative Gartenheim eG, who developed, together with the architect Larisa Kozjak, the idea of renovating the façade in a way that would turn the building into a modern jewel. Their concept to envelope the building with an uplifting colour scheme and at the same time creating the image of a warm ‘scarf’ around the building led to the development of a ‘knitted design’ for the façade. ROCKPANEL façade panels in six carefully-chosen RAL colours were ‘knitted’ into a stimulating, alternating light and dark coloured pattern all around the building. ‘Haute Couture’ is what the ambitious director named his modernisation project, which for several weeks now has invigorated the image of Isernhagener Straße in Hannover with its charm and striking style. “Here we’ve implemented for the first time a transformation from unappealing insulating covering to noble designer envelope.”, says Dr Günter Haese, who has already set his sights on developing more buildings for Gartenheim eG that will soon be given a non-combustible and vapourpermeable stone wool façade insulation along with an attractively designed façade using ROCKPANEL cladding boards.

Aesthetically successful knitting pattern The architect Dipl.-Ing. Larisa Kozjak remains intrigued by the creative possibilities that have been opened up by the use of the ROCKPANEL Rockclad façade panels: “We’ve replaced a purely functional yet unattractive surface with a highly expressive web structure that surrounds the building like a custom-made suit, so it becomes a feast for the senses instead of being a boring monochrome façade.” However, nothing was left to chance when planning the 700 m2 façade: the deployment of each of the six colours was precisely planned in order to ensure a successful overall aesthetic look. “When using so many and such strong colours, one must be very careful to avoid giving the impression of a thrown-together, muddled mess.”, notes Larisa Kozjak.

Together with the installation company Voss Bedachungen and ROCKPANEL Larisa Kozjak planned the implementation of the entire façade construction in minute detail. 180 mmthick ‘Fixrock’ stone wool insulation slabs from ROCKWOOL were mechanically fastened, without joints, onto the façade creating a fire safe insulated envelope. The Voss employees built an aluminium profile substructure onto which the ROCKPANEL façade panels were attached with rivets. The boards were, in line with the design plan, first cut in the workshop into strips of 2250 mm in width and 3050 mm in length and then mounted in a staggered pattern. “We adjusted the lengths on site with standard wood processing tools.”, explains installation company owner Bernd Voss, who had first worked with ROCKPANEL façade panels two years earlier. “It’s a construction material that I personally value very highly, thanks to its fantastic design on the one hand, but also for its processing characteristics. As a building professional, with ROCKPANEL you can deliver reliably first-class work, which gets both owners and planners quite excited – and of course that’s good both for the builder’s reputation and for securing new orders.“ Bernd Voss also had all of the fastening rivets lacquered and delivered by the manufacturer to match the RAL-colours of the façade panels.

Sustainable makes for better living “We also made a point of explaining the quality of the processed materials to our tenants”, explains Dr Haese. “Both the insulation from ROCKWOOL and the façade cladding from ROCKPANEL are building materials which are recognised in sustainable construction. This means that their eco-balance is good and they are recyclable.” ROCKPANEL façade panels are weather- and UV-resistant and colourfast, can be cleaned if desired. “This guarantees the façade to look good for decades to come, which isn’t always the case for plastered surfaces. In addition, by replacing the existing ETICS systems based on polystyrene insulating materials with stone wool insulation, we have improved the façade’s fire performance thereby increasing the safety of our tenants.” The Managing Director is already planning the next façade renovation with the same products. This time in HannoverHerrenhausen, a district that is renowned for its parks and green spaces. We are eagerly awaiting the design idea that will be implemented together with our planning and construction partners. “With our new ‘designer collection’ on the façades, we are not only eliminating dullness from the residential building, but also setting high standards with regard to technology, material and manual processing.”, as Dr Haese puts it in describing his philosophy. “We want to position ourselves as an exceptional provider of unique but affordable living space. Naturally, ‘Haute Couture‘ has its price, but it also always remains unique and distinctive: quite simply something of enduring value.”

Lighting & Electrical Lighting the future at The Crystal with Luxonic

The world’s first centre dedicated solely to sustainable urban development has opened in the Royal Victoria Docks, London. The Crystal, which hosts lectures, conferences and an interactive exhibition showcasing the latest cutting edge technologies, uses innovative and energy efficient lighting throughout the complex, with luminaires provided by Luxonic. The Crystal, a Sustainable Cities Initiative by Siemens, is a modern echo of the Crystal Palace of 1851, which stunned visitors to the Great Exhibition. The £30m landmark building, its design governed by the concept of a multi-faceted urban world, takes a crystalline form, reflecting the many facets of sustainability. The centre is designed to educate us in sustainable building techniques, technologies and solutions.

Widely expected to achieve BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ status, the Crystal also exceeds Building Regulations energy-efficiency targets. In accordance with the underlying aims of the Crystal, lighting is a major contributor to the sustainability of the building. A key partner of Osram, which steered the lighting specification at the Crystal, Luxonic Lighting has provided all the chilled beam luminaires throughout the office areas of the complex, where their sleek, unobtrusive form adds to the modern quality of the interior spaces. The slim beams, suspended from the ceiling, combined with upward lighting, emphasise the spaciousness of the double-height offices. The Flat FPO Lens luminaires provide controlled downlight and have a highly efficient diffuser optic that enhances the visual comfort of the office spaces and

contributes to the aesthetic of the interior. Rune Marki, Managing Director of Osram, said, “The Crystal represents the future of what is possible for the built environment, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. Using the wide range of technologies on offer from the companies in the Osram family and from our key partners such as Luxonic Lighting, we were able to light the Crystal in a flexible, innovative and most of all, energy-efficient manner.”

Kentec protects the Mary Rose museum

Kentec protects the Mary Rose museum

Kentec fire control panels are at the heart of a fire system that’s designed to protect the stunning and unique £27m new Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard where King Henry VIII’s flagship will be housed. The Mary Rose, built in 1509, sank in 1545 in the Solent near Portsmouth during a battle with the French fleet. When the ship capsized, its starboard side became embedded in clay below the soft sediment of the seabed, enabling it to survive intact.

Discovered in 1971 and raised in 1982, the ship has been sprayed for the last 18 years with a chemical to preserve its fragile timbers. This spray has been switched off for the duration of the museum fit-out phase, allowing the ship to be air-dried in a highly controlled, airtight environment within a hot box that’s enclosed by the museum’s new external envelope. In this new museum its hull will be displayed behind glass windows, where visitors will be able to view the historic hull when the museum opens to the public on May 31. As part of the fire safety strategy, horizontal evacuation has been provided by open stairs, to allow simultaneous evacuation of the whole museum. An L1 automatic fire detection designed around a Kentec 4 loop Addressable Fire Detection System is fitted throughout with the main structural frame having a 60-minute fire resistance.

SIG Roofing urges contractors to be vigilant when choosing slate

Bracknell Roofing takes care of Abundant Grace

An increase in incorrectly marked, inferior slate coming into the UK market poses a worrying threat to merchants and contractors, warns SIG Roofing Supplies – the largest distributor of natural slate in Europe.

Leading national building envelope specialist Bracknell Roofing has completed one of the largest tiled roofs in the South of England during the last 12 months.

Following the recent collapse of the slate market in France and the desperate bid by some Spanish quarries to make up their volumes elsewhere, rust-risk (effectively T2) slates are being badged and sold as T1 slate. SIGA’s Slate Category Manager, Joe Bordas explains: “Concern is escalating regarding this situation as UK roofers are being duped into thinking they have a genuine bargain. Slate should be selected from a reputable supplier and a copy of the BS EN12326 Declaration of Performance obtained. This will enable the key physical properties of the slate to be compared in order to ensure it’s up to the job in hand.” Tel: 01480 466 777 or visit www.sigroofing.co.uk Enq. 169

The stunning roof of the 67-bedroom Abundant Grace residential nursing home in Seaford, East Sussex, now defines the building’s whole appearance. Incorporating hips, gables and verandas as well as two complex octagonal garden rooms, the roofs required a number of teams from Bracknell Roofing working on site. “The work carried out by Bracknell Roofing has been excellent – we are very pleased with our new roof,” said Patrick Colville Chairman SCNH ltd. “We always thought that the octagonal hip roof on the orangery would be a challenge for any company, although Bracknell Roofing was able to complete it with ease.” Call: 08705 626800 or visit: www.bracknellroofing.com Enq. 170

Architects Woods Hardwick’s design demonstrates sensitive response to brownfield site development A new format Tesco Eco Store, providing 82,565 sq ft of sales floor and a Petrol Filling Station in a landscaped environment, has been opened in Corby and was designed by Woods Hardwick. After detailed site investigation work at the 7.8 hectare location at St James’s Road, Woods Hardwick has, despite the challenging constraints that existed, achieved a modern and dynamic treatment for a part of Corby that has remained undeveloped for decades. The single-storey supermarket itself is clad in a combination of curtain walling and timber Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) faced in a larch outer rainscreen. The building is topped with Monodraught windcatchers which provide both a statement feature and sustainable natural ventilation to the store. Rooflights provide natural daylight to the salesfloor. The supermarket was designed to cope thermally with the additional demand placed on a building of this size and function. The U-value of the walls was increased from previous trial stores, and SIPs were installed, having been manufactured off-site. Other initiatives include an increase in cycle racks to encourage cycling to work, waste sorting and composting areas in the rear service yard, and rainwater harvesting tanks under the front of the car park. The Corby Tesco Eco Store, the retailer’s 50th Regeneration Partnership store, has achieved a BREAAM ‘Very Good’ rating. One of the largest of its kind built to date, the store has also provided for 300 new jobs in the area. Specifically, the striking design of the Petrol Filling Station (PFS) main canopy with its dramatic sweeping form inspired by a Fibonacci curve has created a new landmark. This both creates a new gateway to the retail site, but also a visual link to two other modern landmarks - the new railway station and the Corby Cube, which houses council offices, a library and theatre.

Project overview

Ellen Jones, lead architect for the project at Woods Hardwick says: “This was a challenging and exacting brief to work on. Our response was driven by the complexity of the site’s heritage and the context that what was principally an out of town development was to be treated and viewed as an in-town development.” The development features a range of responses which reconnect the project to the area as a whole. Working with the local community, consideration has been given and issues addressed around pedestrian and cycle access and routes through and from the site. An ecology zone wraps around the site allowing species such a newts to be re-homed, and links to another environmental zone to form an eco corridor. Extensive planting, avenues of trees and positioning of bench seats address the desire to achieve an enhanced landscaped environment and add texture to the site. The development has contributed significantly to the regeneration of this part of Corby and maintains the Borough’s emphasis on modern design in “its battle against becoming a clone town”. From the ground up, all environmental criteria were addressed at the site from the outset to incorporate the most effective treatments. It was possible to approach the development in this way as the Woods Hardwick team was able to work closely with the developer and with their client Tesco. It was also critical the team worked closely with the Environment Agency. The area, acquired by Mulberry Developments, was formally known as Soothills. A brownfield site, the land had been contaminated through its association with the Corby Steel Works. No harmful materials were left on site after decontamination work over a period of years but the presence of sulphur could, when wet, cause ground heave. This unique challenge was overcome in part through the decision to build on piles and enable the ground to be encapsulated. The tubular recycled steel piles used were manufactured originally in Corby and had a previous life on North Sea oilrigs. Alongside the steel piles are concrete piles and together they form the base to enable the floating construction to sit above ground and be isolated from it.

Roofing Specialists Fighting Back The ongoing price war in metal roofing has the marketplace continuing under siege from contractors trying to win projects by heavily undercutting prices to clients that have been persuaded the bottom line is all that matters. Victims in this downward spiral of price versus quality are the traditional roofing contractors that know the cost of doing a job properly and yet are constantly under pressure to take short cuts in order to “win” work. An increasing number of specialists are however now turning away from this “work at any price” nightmare scenario and refusing to compromise their standards. What these traditional roofing contractors are now finding is that those clients that initially shunned them and went for the cheapest price option are now actively seeking them out to go on site and put right all the problems that have been caused in the interim by their “lowest price” first choice. The penny is gradually starting to drop that as far as traditional metal roofing is concerned, cheapest price today could well be causing problems tomorrow and there is no substitute for the long term value for money provided by an experienced expert. Most of the outstanding metal roofing companies whose expertise lies in the design and installation of traditional aluminium, copper, zinc, stainless and zinc roofing and cladding are members of the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC), an organisation that very much has quality standards as its watchword. The FTMRC takes its responsibilities to the sector much further than just a contractor “club” and has been at the forefront of a number of initiatives designed to raise the standards of traditional metal roof design and installation. For a start it requires potential members to put forward projects for vetting which will be inspected at roof level by an experienced member of the FTMRC Council. Even if accepted, the policy of members providing projects to be vetted continues on a regular basis and anyone failing to maintain the standards required has their membership withdrawn.

t

t

There is also a commitment to training the next generation of metal roofers and the Federation has worked closely with its manufacturing associates (which include most of the major European producers) to develop a progressive hard metals training programme, delivered at the LSA National Roof Training facility in Kent. To back this up the Federation has designed and published, with the support of funding from the CITB a UK Guide to Good Practice in Fully Supported Metal Roofing and Cladding, the first publication of its kind to properly address UK design and installation issues covering aluminium, copper, stainless steel and zinc detailing. Manufacturers are now offering extended warranties for their products if installed by FTMRC members and the Federation is currently examining the parameters which could enable members to offer a 25 year labour and materials warranty for their work, independently insurance backed and administered, but policed by the Federation..

The growing authority of the Federation has also recently been recognised by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) who have authorised the FTMRC to process all applications for the new Gold Heritage Skills card in Traditional / Heritage Metal roofing and any contractor wishing to apply for the card during the current Managed Industry Accreditation (grandfather rights) period should contact the FTMRC direct (01342 301627 or email info@ftmrc.co.uk) There is a growing recognition that getting a traditional metal roof designed, set out and installed by someone with the appropriate expertise and experience provides much better value for money in the long term. That not all metal roofing contractors are the same and that some simply do not have enough knowledge or skill to do the job properly, regardless of how small or large a project may be. That sometimes lowest price should be taken as a warning, not an opportunity. Don’t say we didn’t tell you. Enq 334

The Federation can therefore recommend its members with confidence to any specifier looking for the proper installation of a traditional metal roof and there is an increasing trend of members being asked to go back to site to investigate and put right problems caused by a contractor whose design knowledge, hands on skills and practical experience were simply not good enough. The irony is FTMRC members have often been involved with tendering for the work in the initial stages and had warned the client / architect that the job simply could not be done correctly at some of the price levels that were being quoted. As a result of these warnings going unheeded the clients face (often considerable) further costs to put right a job that should have been done correctly in the first place. There must be a real temptation to put “I told you so” at the end of the remedial works inspection report. FTMRC commitment to quality standards extends beyond a responsibility to its membership.

Ceramic Granite An exceptionally versatile façade solution ”Across all sectors of the market, ceramic granite is the first choice for an increasing number of architects looking for a premium quality façade finish,” says Brian Newell, chief executive of Lancashire manufacturer and prefabricator Shackerley (Holdings) Group Limited, the UK’s leading supplier of ceramic granite ventilated facade systems.

Hotels - PHP architects specified starkly contrasting travertine and black polished ceramic granite façades to complement the striking design of the new Hotel La Tour in Birmingham

A fully vitrified precision engineered material, ceramic granite is made entirely from natural materials - refined clays, quartz, feldspars and metal oxides - pressed into large format slabs at extremely high pressures and fired at 1260°C, to form a material superior in strength and performance to any ‘natural’ stone, without bonding agents. Whilst it can be supplied in a myriad of different styles, colours and finishes to meet the most demanding aesthetic specifications, the real beauty of ceramic granite is that it can be produced to resemble stone such as marble or granite in its naturally hewn format. Ceramic granite is exceptionally hardwearing (up to 8 on the Mohs scale) and without the flaws and weak points inherent in many quarried materials, façade panels of just 12mm thickness, (approx 25kg/ m2) can offer outstanding building protection, comparing very favourably with traditional cladding materials. Loadings on the substructure and building are reduced and panels are easier to manoeuvre and install. Overall, the costs of

procurement, prefabrication and installation of a ceramic granite ventilated façade are significantly less than for a quarried stone construction. With almost zero porosity, ceramic granite conforms to all international freeze/thaw resistance standards and is totally resistant to airborne pollution, algae growth and most acids and alkalis. Graffiti can be removed with ease. Because of its impermeability and through-body colouration, patterns and graining, its appearance will not fade, however extreme the weather conditions and UV light exposure. We supply our ceramic granite facade panels in a prefabricated ‘installation ready’ format, for use in conjunction with our patented Queen’s Award winning Sureclad ventilated facade system which employs a special undercut anchoring system to provide a safe, secure and stress free fix. We developed Sureclad over a decade ago, enabling the A & D community across the UK to benefit from the aesthetic and technical benefits of ceramic granite ventilated cladding and the system is fully compliant with CWCT standards for systemised building envelopes and NHBC technical requirements. At our ISO 9001 quality accredited production facilities in Lancashire we have an extensive range of specialist prefabrication facilities and our experienced technical team can also offer expert advice at every stage during the specification, design and installation of your façade system.

Reflex Systems goes all gold

Aico, one of the UK's leading suppliers of domestic mains powered Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms, is pleased to announce its market-leading RadioLINK Professional wireless interconnection technology has been upgraded to feature remote House Code entry and the ability to add full control to mixed (or 'hybrid') hard-wired and RF systems. RadioLINK works by allowing Aico Multi-Sensor, Smoke, Heat and CarbonMonoxide (CO) alarms to be wirelessly interconnected by Radio Frequency (RF) signals, rather than cabling. If one alarm on the system is triggered, RF signals cause every other alarm on that system to sound, providing the earliest warning to the building's occupants. RadioLINK has now been further enhanced to allow for Remote House Code entry, which can save time and get over access issues when installing smoke alarms into HMOs and flats. Please visit – www.aico.co.uk. Enq. 173

Swansea Council enhances Aico Fire & Co alarm installation programme

ACS FCO is a new generation, clear, waterborne fire retardant, surface applied impregnation liquid for protecting timber and timber related substrates. Tested in accordance with EN13501 on softwoods, hardwoods, and particleboard achieving a rating of B/S1/d0 (equivalent to Class 0 & 1 to UK Building Regulations).

With their versatile and innovative features, the latest highresolution all-in-one CCTV cameras from Siemens cover the full spectrum of security applications. Available are an indoor model, two indoor/outdoor models ready-fitted in IP66 heated enclosures, and an IP66 fixed-dome vandalresistant model.

Following its specification of Aico as its sole supplier of Smoke and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms for its housing stock in 2010, Swansea City Council has now fitted more than 9,000 properties with Aico mains powered Multi-Sensor Fire alarms, Optical smoke alarms and CO alarms. When completed, 14,000 homes will benefit from the Aico alarms.

ACS FCO can be easily applied to a wide variety of surfaces including, floors, timber framing, panelling, decking, soffit board, fencing and cladding, both interior and exterior. FCO is part of a range of fire retardant and intumescent paints available from Advanced Chemical Specialties Ltd.

The new cameras are fast and easy to install and set up. They offer automatic day/night operation with wide dynamic range (WDR) technology that allows them to capture clear images even in difficult lighting conditions.

The original decision to specify solely Aico alarms throughout Swansea City Council’s housing stock was based on the quality of the alarms. The Council remain pleased with their decision, benefitting from a reduction in false alarms from those properties fitted with Aico alarms and a minimal failure rate compared with the previous detectors used, resulting in cost savings on maintenance call outs.
