LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Readers, The change in seasons is a reminder from nature that nothing stays the same in our lives. As we were working on this issue, the realty of the changes that occur in families when a child is diagnosed with special needs made me pause and think. In our cover article on autism, Erika Hellstrom writes an inspiring story about her daughter Violet. As a mom, she sees the gifts that she has been given in her life and understands that the future ahead for the family living with a child with autism will be met “day by day.” Erika knows, like many of us, that she can turn to the many resources in our community for assistance. Marianna Randazzo writes about another extraordinary mom, Diane Campione, in her article, The Library: A Bridge to Independence. Diane drew her inspiration from her son Christian and worked to bring specialized programs to the NYPL that would benefit children and adults with special needs. Diane realizes that in order to make changes in our environment for our children, we have to become involved. Raising a child with special needs is sometimes challenging, so a word of praise or encouragement for people, businesses or organizations that are doing good work in their behalf can be much appreciated. We are happy to share the stories of special people in Staten Island who deserve our applause. Our special section, Star Worthy, is the perfect place to acknowledge someone who has gone above and beyond in our community. Read about this month's “stars” on page 28. Mothers and daughters have a very unique bond and it is one that deserves nurturing. Our story on page 74 has some creative ideas for a date with your daughter. I am proud to say that whether it is a night of just sharing a movie and popcorn at home or out attending an event, time spent with my daughter Nicole is always precious to me. Share with us on Facebook what you and your daughter like to do together. Students at PS 23 have been very busy learning the Seven Habits of Happy Kids based on the popular self-help book by Sean Covey. In our article on page 62, you¹ll read about how Assistant Principal Renee Mazza feels this empowerment of proactivity is benefiting the children both now and in their future. So on that note, I hope that each one of us is proactive this month. What will you do with all the great parenting information in our April issue? I will surely be more aware of acknowledging those around me who go out of their way to do something extra for others. Let us know on Facebook what you decide to do. As you notice the changes in nature, I hope it awakens something new in you. See you on Facebook!

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

S.I. LIVING Community & School News

A guide to community events

Hello, springtime! Even if you’re not a baseball fan, you’ve got to admit that it’s pretty awesome to know that the forecast is now calling for baseball weather. It’s time to put away the snow boots (at least we hope so) and take out the sneakers and cleats and get ready for some outdoor fun on Staten Island. We’ve got some good ideas to get you out of the house this month, and be sure to keep tabs on our Facebook page, where we bring you updated information on events each day. World of Women's Women of Distinction Gala Women of Women will be honoring Women of Distinction on April 9 for their "Restoring Hope – Rebuilding Lives" Gala at Li Greci's Staaten. The following women are being honored: Janis Balletto, Corresponding Secretary of World of Women, Carla Murino, President of Carla's Closet, Jeanne Zieff, Elder Abuse Program Coordinator, and our very own Publisher, Roselle Farina-Hecht. Guyon Rescue, the not-forprofit organization helping families of Staten Island affected by Hurricane Sandy, will be recognized and Derek Tabacco, Co-Founder of Guyon Rescue, will be the Gentleman of Distinction.

Autism Fair Returns to Staten Island April is Autism Awareness Month, so it is fitting that the 2nd Annual Stand Together Resources Fair will be returning to Staten Island this month on Saturday, April 13 from 10 am to 2 pm at the Petrides School auditorium in Sunnyside. Last year’s highly successful event was marked by 800 guests and around 50 autism service providers and vendors. It is the

hope of BP James Molinaro and his Autism Committee that this year’s event will be even larger and more successful. Gloria M. Satriale, Esq., Executive Director of the Preparing Adolescents and Adults for Life (PAAL) program will be one of the guest speakers. The Autism Committee consists of the Island’s autism services providers, all of whom will have representatives present at the fair: Eden II, GRACE Foundation, JCC of Staten Island, On Your Mark, Volunteers of America, Seton Foundation for Learning, and Community Resources. For more information, or if you are an autism vendor looking to reserve space at the fair, please call Joanne Nuzzo, Special Events Director, at 718-816-2133.

Good News for Miller Field Athletes Despite Hurricane Sandy’s best efforts to destroy it, Miller Field in New Dorp will be open for the spring, summer, and fall sports seasons this year. Opening day is slated for April 20 and will include about half of the 22 soccer fields, six softball

S.I. LIVING Community & School News fields, and three baseball fields. It is expected that the other half of the playing areas will be ready for play by mid May.

Support Group for Sandy Victims Sandy may have left town, but her effects are still felt by many Staten Islanders. That is why the Staten Island Mental Health Society (SIMHS) is sponsoring a free Hurricane Sandy Community Support Group, as part of the Project Hope initiative. Led by crisis counselors, the group will serve as a terrific opportunity for Staten Islanders to share their feelings, experiences, and advice in the wake of Sandy. The group meets weekly on Monday evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm at Holy Rosary Parish, at 100 Jerome Street in South Beach. They also meet Monday mornings from 9 to 10 am at PS 38, at 421 Lincoln Avenue in Midland Beach. For more information, please call 718-442-2225.

Ferry Terminal to Offer Sit-Down Restaurant Commute got you hungry? The River Dock Cafe is slated to open later this year at the Staten Island Ferry terminal in St. George. News of the terminal’s first-ever sit-down restaurant was announced by Borough Pres. Molinaro and the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC). The River Dock Café© will be serving traditional diner food and seafood dishes. Owner Sal Himani says that the goal of his restaurant “is to not only continuously serve the commuters and tourists that visit the terminal, but also make it a destination for seafood lovers.” A planned outdoor space will offer views of the waterfront and Richmond County Ballpark, as well as the planned New York Wheel.

22

The new restaurant is part of a $480 million project of the EDC to revitalize Staten Island’s North Shore community; plans include the New York Wheel, a new hotel, and a retail complex.

The Police Athletic League’s (PAL) Annual Education Tournament of Champions took place on February 19 at the PAL’s Edward Byrne Center in Queens. There were 500 youngsters from all over New York City who participated in a variety of educational games, including checkers, Boggle, mancala, and rebus challenges, along with ping pong, basketball, and other activities. A number of young Staten Islanders were in attendance, representing the PAL centers at the Petrides Center, the Greenbelt Recreation Center, PS 41, Port Richmond Center, and PS 14/PS 78.

The Department of Education is Daniel of PAL’s Greenbelt Recreation Center planning to amend the policy that participated in the Tower Challenge at PAL’s requires elementary and middle school Annual Educational Tournament of Champions. students who fail state tests to either pass summer school or repeat a grade level. With the brand new state tests, it is anticipated that there will be many more student failures, and therefore summer school programs will beovercrowded. To avoid this situation, only those students who land in the bottom 10 percent will have to go to summer school. The new tests are supposed to be a more accurate measure of what students should be mastering at each grade level; however, this new policy aims to promote most students, even if they fail the test. Star Worthy

Do you have a story about a Staten Islander who has gone above and beyond for a fellow citizen or their community? Tell us about them so we can tell everyone! Go to www.siparent.com and click on Star Worthy under the Contests & Clubs tab.

Alyssa Marie DePaolis Alyssa is a 19-year-old St. John’s University junior with big aspirations…and she’s off to a great start! Recently crowned Miss Richmond County 2013, Alyssa is using her position and her passion to advance the causes she represents, particularly helping children impacted by speech conditions. Majoring in Speech Pathology and minoring in Art, she still finds time to pursue community service efforts along with the responsibilities that her title mandates. Last year, Alyssa took on the challenge of coordinating Staten Island’s first ever Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech “Staten Island Speaks Up!” raising nearly $33,000, and also plans to institute an education program called “Speak Up” to raise awareness. Be sure to support this worthy cause via this year’s 2nd annual walk at Clove Lakes Park on April 21st. Despite all the glitz and glamour associated with wearing a crown, this young lady has not lost sight of what the crown signifies and has devoted herself to the four main principles of the Miss American Organization– scholarship, service, style and success. Keep your eye on Alyssa DePaolis when she represents Staten Island in the Miss New York Scholarship Pageant in July. As a woman out to make a difference, she’s truly Star Worthy!

Honoring Local Heroes

Kathie Helm, nominated by Farrah Garcia

Kathie Helm is a Kindergarten teacher at Immaculate Conception School in Stapleton who comes prepared each day to teach with motivation and enthusiasm and makes the learning experience fun for her students. Her kindness, caring and endless love for teaching have been the savior in many of her students lives. Her teaching practices include creative, real world connections and allow students the opportunity to have fun-filled experiences while learning. Every year, she teaches a science unit about "life-cycles of a chicken," allowing eggs of chickens to be incubated and cared for in the classroom until they are hatched. Students have actually seen the chicks peck and hatch right out of the egg! Ms. Helm’s endless love for her students and teaching are evident in everything she does, not only in her own class but also throughout the school. Ms. Helm has donated winter coats, clothing, money, and prom dresses for students in need. She has been a cheerleader coach and lead teacher in afterschool programs for at risk children. She is a prime example of an exemplary educator. Her love of life and teaching are transferred to her students and are evident in the admiration her students express for her on a daily basis when their eyes light up every morning as he/she greet her with a great big smile and hug!

Hilda Silletto, nominated by her daughter Kelly Silletto Hilda Silletto has been a nurse at Staten Island University Hospital for 42 years. As a single mom, she raised two daughters while working two jobs. Hilda works in Maternity and the Nursery, as well as teaching lactation to her patients. One of her favorite parts about being an RN for so long is that she is now seeing a third generation of babies and is often recognized and revisited by her former patients. She takes great joy in the fact that her patients remember her. Knowing that her basement had flooded last year from Hurricane Irene, she was prepared for the worst during Sandy. During the storm, while her own basement was flooded, Hilda worked for 32 straight hours. Hilda, along with other nurses, was there to provide the necessary care and to insure their patients were comfortable and stress-free. “My mother, Hilda, has not only been a great, hard-working nurse, but she has also been a wonderful mother, always making time for my sister Kimberly and me. She loves science and nature and would take us exploring in the neighborhood when we were young. She made growing up loving and fun.

In my house, April is a very special month because the big league baseball season gets under way.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

We root for the Mets, and I certainly created monsters — my Yankee fan friends say it’s to my kids’ detriment. My parents shared their love for the game with me, and it was only natural to share my love for the game with my children, and now grandchildren. Now that my children are grown, I share a ticket package with two of them. Some of our best family sports time the past few years has taken place in Flushing, Queens — first at Shea Stadium and now at Citi Field. This year — for the first time I can remember, and I’ve been a fan since 1962 — both the Yankees and Mets are opening the season at home on the same date, and at the same time. Did either team draw a full house for the opener on April 1? Which had more fans in attendance? Let the arguments begin! Some of my fondest Opening Day memories took place in the 1980s, which probably not coincidentally is when I became a parent. I can still picture Gary Carter’s game-winning home run in his Mets debut in 1985 and Darryl Strawberry’s monstrous homer in Montreal that hit the ring on the roof at Olympic Stadium in 1988. I also recall working my job on the newspaper sports desk in ‘85, and reading Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser’s story about Opening Day, which was a particularly winter-like one in the northeast. For those who can remember the song “We Are the World,” he started his story with words to be sung to that music: “We are the cold, we are the freezing. We are the ones who came to Opening Day, so let’s start shivering. There’s a choice we’re making — we’re giving up our health. It’s true, we’ll catch some awful colds, just you and me.” In recent years, my two oldest have gone to the ballpark for their Opening Day experiences. I’ve joined them at the last few, and we have tickets to be at Citi Field for Mets-Padres. We still laugh about Opening Day 2009, the first game ever played at the new ballpark, when Mets starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey fell off the mound in the middle of a delivery in the second inning. They might be the new Mets, but sometimes they still remind me of the old Mets.

APRIL 2013

We’ll be there early this year, as usual, to check out what’s new in the stadium; find out which concession stands are still in the same locations, and which have moved. Hey, I have to know where to get my seventh-inning cannoli! Since the opener isn’t part of our ticket package, we will undoubtedly head over to our 20-game plan seats to see where we will watch a quarter of the home season. We’ll pass through the Fan Fest on the first level, past Mr. Met’s Kiddie Field, and maybe see the big-headed mascot in the flesh. If a Fan Photo photographer comes by, I will make my kids pose with me for a picture — despite their protests. Then we will settle down in our seats and watch the game. We’ll cheer. We’ll boo. We’ll laugh. I’ll sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “Lazy Mary” during the seventh-inning stretch. We won’t do “the wave.”

Dr. Abhinav Sinha is also the Director of the Children’s Dental Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital (ranked #1 in NY) and is Assistant Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Win or lose, we will undoubtedly get someone to take a picture of us as we leave the ballpark, with the old Shea Stadium Home Run Apple serving as the backdrop, just as we’ve done since Citi Field opened. And then we’ll do it all over again, and again, sometimes bringing along the grandkids. We’ll mix in some Staten Island Yankee and maybe Brooklyn Cyclone games starting in June, making more family memories a bunch of times at least through September.

WATCHING MILESTONES: WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN

quick search for a book about baby milestones will find you over 850,000 titles. Why? Because we parents need constant reassurance that our little ones are doing alright. Available by the week or month, most parents run through the list, compare it to their little bundle, and sigh with relief. Unfortunately, not all parents get to that sigh. When you see billboards advertising that 1 in 110 children will be born with autism, it’s impossible not to worry. As a new parent, what can you do? What should you look for? With help from Autism Speaks, the following information will help you navigate your way through the worries of early parenthood.

Even from infancy, a child with autism may avoid eye contact or not interact ways similar to their peers. A child with autism may pass on hugs and cuddling, or react to parents affections differently than expected. Some children with autism may show delays in language, others may not. Watch for your child’s ability to carry on a conversation. Can they banter back and forth, understand the give and take that is usual in ordinary conversations? Can they change their tone or vocabulary based on their audience? Some children with autism struggle in these areas. Another telling sign a child may be affected by autism is the behaviors they display. Rather than play chase with their cars, they may line them up instead. In fact, pretend play is very challenging for a child with autism. Repetitive motions may make them look different from their peers as well. If your child experiences any of the above mentioned characteristics, contact your child’s physician. Also, for a more detailed list, visit www.autismspeaks.org. SAFETY TIPS

PAIRING KIDS WITH PETS

n many families, kids and pets get along famously. Many youngsters are natural born animal enthusiasts while pets tend to respond to kids' gentle and loving nature.

I

But the bond between kids and pets is one that develops over time, and parents welcoming a new pet into their home should know that this transition is not always easy. Teaching kids to treat pets with love and respect and watching pets to ensure kids are safe in their company can help calm parents' nerves. The following tips, courtesy of the ASPCA, can ensure both kids and pets stay safe while building a strong bond and a healthy relationship.

KIDS AND PETS WILL DEVELOP A STRONGER BOND IF THEY LEARN TO RESPECT EACH OTHER'S SPACE.

• Ears back, pupils dilated Teach kids to protect themselves from overexcited pets. Pets, especially puppies, can easily become overexcited. This can be mistaken for aggressiveness, especially by kids who might be scared. Teach kids to protect themselves from overexcited pets, including dog bite prevention. If kids fear their dog might bite them, then teach them to roll into a ball, protect their hands and face, and call for help. Running and screaming might upset the dog, who then might go on the defensive. Teach kids to recognize signs of aggression. Sometimes dogs will use body language to let people know they do not wish to be approached. Adults and kids alike should familiarize themselves with these mannerisms as a safety precaution. If these signals are ignored, then the dog might bite to protect itself. Signs of defensive aggression include:

38

APRIL 2013

www.siparent.com

• Tail down and tensed • Posture mildly crouched, weight over rear legs • Muzzle tense, wrinkled and snarling, and teeth exposed When a dog is exhibiting any of these signs, adults and kids should not approach the dog and let it cool down. Keep kids' toys away from pets and vice versa. Kids' toys are not always pet-safe and pets' toys are not always safe for kids. Separate the two and explain to kids that they should not use their toys when playing with pets. Teach kids to respect a pet's "safe spot." Pets may need a "safe spot" to which they can retreat and be sure no one

www.siparent.com

will follow them. These spots are safe havens for pets, especially those adopted from shelters who might need more time to adjust to a new environment than a puppy or kitten. Teach kids to respect these "safe spots," which might be a crate or a sleeping area, leaving pets alone when they retreat to such areas. Pets react defensively when others try to access their safe spots. Teach kids and pets rules for each game. When playing reward games, such as those when a pet gets a treat or toy if it behaves correctly, teach pets to sit in order to get their reward, and teach kids that the pet must be sitting in order to earn its reward. This can keep kids from being jumped on or accidentally bitten when a pet gets overexcited by the sight of a toy or treat. It also teaches pets that they can't get what they want simply by being physical. If the pet won't sit, then adults and kids should walk away without giving the pet its treat or toy.

SECRETS OF A PARTY PLANNER: 10 Tips to Throwing a Stress–Free Kids Party

lthough ‘kids’ and ‘stress-free’ don’t always go together, Brett Galley, owner of event company Hollywood Pop Gallery, is here to affirm that there is hope for fantastic parties that won’t inspire any gray hairs!

A

1. Keep it simple! As much as we never want to leave anyone out, more guests = more of everything else. The unspoken equation to a practical amount of youngsters is to match the number of invitations to the age of your child, and add two. This helps with party expenses as well as keeping the atmosphere fun and intimate yet manageable. When it comes to the guest list, sometimes less is more!

THROW A PARTY THAT’S ALL FUN AND NO HASSL.E.

2. Be organized! Have a checklist and timeline and mark tasks off as you go along. Try to give yourself ample time to prepare so you have time to relax and anticipate the big day. These celebrations are memories in the making so make an effort to slow down and enjoy them with friends and family. 3. Go Green! Most people these days are tech-savvy enough to use email regularly. There are easy ways to make a festive e-vite that looks cool and is more efficient. This saves time, saves trees, and cuts costs of buying or printing invitations to mail. Welcome to the 21st century! 4. Is a party venue right for me? If you find yourself losing sleep over party details and it’s within your budget, handing over the reins to the experts is one way to catch a wink. There are many establishments that take care of all the needs of a kid’s party from food, to entertainment, to décor and favors. It’s easy (and free) to call and just ask for information. Choose a venue that specializes in children’s parties, has organized activities and responsible hosts. All you have to do is show up and party!

42

APRIL 2013

www.siparent.com

5. Get creative! Pick a theme and carry it through. A theme party such as Sports, Pajama Party, DJ Disco, or a Safari Adventure can really add to the excitement of the day and provide a magical atmosphere for the kids to escape to. Have novelty eye patches for the little buccaneers to wear as they “board the ship” to your child’s Pirate Party or have Tea Time with scrumptious cakes and juice for all your little princesses. Let your and your child’s imaginations run wild and never forget to have fun. 6. Don’t be afraid to DIY! If budget is a stress, cut costs where you can. Bake your own cake or turn it into a fun activity and have the kids decorate their own cupcakes. Organize classic games like hot potato, limbo, and charades at little to no cost to keep the kids entertained. Legends never go out of style! 7. Visit your local party supply! Head to a local party store for supplies. Many party stores provide all the essentials from invitations, to paper goods, balloons, decorations, games, and favors. Try to find a one-stop-shop to avoid making several trips around town.

Sources For Challenging Work for the Gifted

Solid Advice on Improving Children’s Basic Skills and Addressing Parental Concerns

Question: Many times, you write about the importance of gifted children having challenging work. I would like to give some additional suggestions. Online availability of class work is perhaps the most underutilized format to help gifted children.

Parents should also realize that many universities love to have gifted children involved with them. If parents of a gifted child live near a university, it could be worthwhile for them to contact a professor (or perhaps the chair of the department) in a given field their child shows a particular penchant to (a) get their input on where to go for academic stimulation and (b) see if the professor would mind having the student sit in on some of their classes and/or perhaps even mentor the child. As professors themselves were often precocious as young people, they frequently are somewhat empathetic to gifted children. – Want to Be Helpful

Answer: So many parents of gifted children seem to think the only way to provide gifted children with the academic challenges that they need is by skipping grades. For the teacher or parent who wants to keep these children with their age group, online websites present great materials. Furthermore, many states now offer schools a wide variety of online courses. It definitely is possible for a talented math student in eighth grade to take high-school-level courses within his or her classroom. Furthermore, parents should not place the entire burden on finding stimulating work for their gifted children on the children's teachers. Great summer-school programs are available throughout the country. Some are in local colleges, and others may be in their own school districts. Parents should also visit the American Psychological Association’s website at www.apa.org and search for "related gifted education websites." These sites offer an abundance of ideas on meeting the needs of gifted children.

Two Helpful Mental Math Strategies Question: Do you have any mental math strategies that I can teach my children to use in adding together two digit numbers? I’d like them to have another approach to solving problems like 42 + 14 besides the usual procedure. I think it would make their lengthy math assignments more enjoyable. – Need Math Strategies Answer: When children attempt mental arithmetic, they have to forget how they did problems with pencil and paper procedures and learn a new set of procedures. You may want to try the following strategies before introducing them to your children.

Front-end addition: When adding with their minds, children should start on the left side of the numbers. For example, to find the sum of 35 + 22, they should first add the 3 tens and 2 tens. Now, your children know that the sum must be fifty-something. Next, the 5 ones and 2 ones are added to equal 7. The sum is 57. Have your children try this with the following sums: 23 + 31, 52 + 26 and 37 + 41. When using front end addition, the children should always check the ones digits to see if their sum exceeds 10. If the sum is greater than 10, then the sum of the digits in the tens place must be increased by one. For example, for the sum 57 + 36, the 5 tens of 57 and the 3 tens of 36 result in 8 tens. But 7 ones plus 6 ones adds to 1 ten and 3 ones. Thus there will be 9 tens and 3 ones (93). Make a nice number: Here’s a strategy that can be used when one of the numbers to be added ends in an 8 or 9. Children should borrow one or two from one of the numbers being added to make the other number a multiple of ten. For example, for the sum of 98 + 17, two can be borrowed from the 17 making it 15. Then the 2 can be added to the 98 making it 100. Now it¹s easy to add 15 + 100 and get 115.

A Possible Attention Problem Question: My step-daughter is an only child. At home, she’s very relaxed and skilled at entertaining herself. We can’t see any attention problems. However, her first grade teacher is convinced that she has an attention problem. What do you think? – Worried Answer: You certainly need to have more information from her teacher than your step-daughter has an attention problem. Find out from her teacher specifically when she isn't paying attention and whether it is seriously affecting her learning. It would probably be helpful to go to school and observe how the child is behaving in the classroom.

One reason that you may not see any attention problems in your home is because there are fewer distractions there than in a classroom with children involved in different activities. Many young children have to learn how to focus in the classroom and are inattentive at times. You can find out more about the symptoms of attention problems at these two excellent websites: www.chadd.org and www.additudemag.com. Generally speaking, a serious attention problem needs to be manifested in more than one setting.

SPECIAL NEEDS

THE LIBRARY: A BRIDGE TO INDEPENDENCE

he Huguenot Park Library Branch has become a community crusader for the developmentally challenged, thanks largely to Diane Campione, who just celebrated her 25th year with the New York Public Libraries. But the best is yet to come, believes Diane, who is the clerical supervisor of the Huguenot Branch and mother to a child with special needs. Her dream is to see all NYPL branches become involved in specialized programs for children and adults with special needs.

T

Diane is not just a dreamer— she is a leader. What she has DIANE CAMPIONE ASSISTS SEBASTIAN WISNIEWSKI AT THE established at the Huguenot SPECIAL EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM/ACHIEVE 3000. Library is a footprint for all libraries to follow. The traditional whom had never even been to the library or have a library card. facility now includes specialized and outreach programs. “Everyone is welcome at the library and now we are tailoring As a young mother, Diane faced many challenges raising her son Christian. She was very keen to how society treated families with special needs children. “When I took my son with me food shopping, it was extremely stressful for him to stand on the line, making every chore more difficult for us. Management noticed and invited us to check out separately at the courtesy desk. It was then I realized that if a local supermarket could accommodate my family’s needs, why not the public library. Fortunately I am in a position to bring my dream to fruition.” Community involvement and personal experience furnished Diane with an awareness of the need for specialized programs in the library—a need she continually strives to meet by implementing innovative tactile, food-based, and outreach programs. They include proprioceptive and social programs, as well as recreational and educational based classes. Diane believes everyone should be included into the NYPL community and thus is instrumental in constructing programs that involve adults with developmental disabilities, many of

programs to fit the needs of the individuals we service.” Her creativity in adapting the library was evident the day she turned it into a Mock Movie Theater. Again, Diane’s son is the light behind all that she does. “It is very difficult for me to take Christian to an actual movie theater because of sensory, social, and transition issues, yet I want him to develop skills and be exposed to situations to help him in his every day life and in the future. I knew I was not alone in my quest; so at the branch, we created a Mock Movie Theater.” With aisle seating using Lego lights, a concession stand, tickets, and dimmed lighting, a room at the Huguenot Library was transformed into a theater. The room was darkened except for the use of flashlight to help find the marked seats printed on the tickets. This enabled the students to transition from one area to another easily. During the movie, the volume was higher than a typical branch movie to desensitize students with heightened sensory issues. “The program was wildly successful,” said Diane. “We are not just a place to read books, we want to adapt and create socialization programs.”

Diane is also working on the shopping program. By collaborating with large organizations, such as The National Council and a local shop, Nothing New Thrift Shop on Amboy Road, she is arranging field trips to bring youngsters into a store where they are free to shop around and learn the lessons of appropriate social behavior. “We inspire parents who normally didn’t take their children to the library. It was amazing to see parents who thought their children could not get a library card get excited about the idea. I’m doing a library card drive at Lifestyles for the Disabled where I will bring the applications and cards to them. The library has a ramp to accommodate the physical needs of our patrons; we now have an invisible ramp with programs that meet the needs of the individuals. It is our way of enabling children and adults to obtain quality educational and recreational programming within the community. We strive to empower each individual to explore their passions and develop skills needed for everyday living.” Diane is involved in transition fairs and attends community meetings. While in attendance, she learns about the needs of the community and introduces parents, providers, and other community leaders to the services available at the library. Together they plan future programs. It was at a community meeting that the Cerebral Palsy Association and AHRC approached Diane about creating programs for their participants. With the support of the branch manager Steven Horvath and the wonderful employees of the branch, they made it happen. The patrons were brought to the library to watch Book Flix – a pairing of fictional storybooks and short documentaries in video format. After watching the video, a discussion was held and a related craft followed. Diane made sure that everyone left with their own library card and a few borrowed items. As Diane believes, “Everyone is entitled to a library card.” Diane, along with Nicholas Higgins, Associate Director of Outreach, created the “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” program for adults who are aging out of the Special

Education System. Many of the individuals are severely autistic and nonverbal, so the program was conducted at the Todt HillWesterleigh Branch to meet the physical needs of the group. Schools are always welcome at the library but if they cannot come due to bussing issues or time restraints, Diane will go to them. She has created Food Based Programs that specifically benefit children with Oral Input Dysfunction, a sensory processing disorder. Diane, along with staff member Lauren Morandi, took her Colonial Baking Program to PS 8. It was a huge hit with the students. Other specialized programs include Tactile Programming that provides stimuli and encourages fine motor skills and ACHIEVE 3000, an online DOE Instructional program. Among the Transition Programs are gardening projects, work-study, travel training, and community programs. Diane is constantly working to bring more programs to the library. Programs planned in the future include storytelling with an American Sign Language interpreter and young ASL students. Diane’s dream is to see these types of programs throughout the city. “My son loves bridges. When you ask Christian what bridges do, he will tell you they connect one place to another. Wouldn’t it be great if the library became a bridge to connect all communities? What better way to foster independence? The library is changing. We are no longer just books and DVDs.” Diane Campione says she is “just a clerical supervisor.” After spending time with her and having seen firsthand some of these programs in action, I can tell you that she is truly one of the Library Angels, who believes in enabling the disabled and translating disabilities into abilities. She accomplishes this through providing wonderful opportunities at the NYPL. For further information or to schedule a program, contact Diane Campione at 718984-4636 or Nicholas Higgins at 212-3400370. COMMUNICATION

BUILDING BABY’S CONFIDENCE THROUGH SIGN LANGUAGE

hen children experience at an early age disappointment in communicating over and over again it significantly affects their confidence. We learn through patterns and repetition. When a child can’t effectively engage in either, it becomes frustrating for the child and the parent. The consequences usually end in the child avoiding social interaction, throwing tantrums, and losing self-confidence. By using baby sign language, I was able to bypass some major developmental issues that my son was having.

W

Ben, my third child, has been YOUR CHILD CAN LEARN SIGNS LIKE THIS ONE, EXPRESSING AIRPLANE. my most shy and slowest to want to verbalize. He always had a hard time pronouncing he wanted, “gaaa, gaaa, gaaa.” I never would have guessed. things. He struggled to get his mouth to produce the “R” Right then I signed book to him, then I took his hands and had sound, and he frequently omitted the “S”, “Th”, and “Ch” sounds him sign book. We did it a few times until I could tell he in many words. The poor little guy was getting so frustrated understood. Later that night when I was putting him to bed, he when people couldn’t understand him. He would either avoid said “ga”. I asked if he wanted some water, he said no and talking and interacting or he’d start screaming and throwing a started signing “book”. I grabbed a book and he started tantrum. I’ve worked with many parents who have dealt with jumping up and down yelling, “yeah!” What a relief and pure similar problems. They tend to feel overwhelmed and sense of joy and accomplishment we both felt. That was ten confused because they don’t know how to help their child. times easier than wandering around the house trying to figure With Ben I decided that anytime I found out what he was trying to say I would teach him the sign language for that word. It was like a miracle! He knew that I could understand him if he used the sign, and then I was able to help him learn how to pronounce the words he was verbally struggling to say. For instance, Ben would say “Ga” for multiple things. He’d say “ga” for water, “ga, ga” for dog, and “gaaa” for book (I have no idea why). I’d picked up on water and dog, because he was already using those signs, thank goodness. Then one day he was trying to tell me he wanted something and I had no idea what he was talking about. We wandered around the house trying to figure out what he needed. Finally he saw the book

out what he needed. Ben has continued to build confidence, avoid tantrums, and excel socially. I truly feel that baby sign language has enabled him to progress when he otherwise would have fallen behind and consequently lost confidence. Parents don’t typically think to use baby sign language for building confidence in their children, but I have seen it work first hand time and time again. Enabling your child to better communicate will have a positive impact on them for the rest of their lives. By Andrea Ploehn, an expert on nonverbal communication and teaching babies sign language. New parents may soon be finding themselves in quite a pickle; a crying, teething baby and no knowledge of how to soothe their little one’s aching gums. According to a recently updated warning issued by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), benzocaine, an anesthetic commonly found in over-the-counter teething gels, can lead to a potentially deadly condition known as methemoglobinemia; commonly referred to as “blue baby syndrome.” “Blue baby syndrome” occurs when the amount of oxygen carried though the bloodstream is greatly reduced, leading to pale, grey or blue-colored skin, lips and nail beds; shortness of breath; rapid heart rate; confusion; fatigue and in some cases, overall asphyxiation. The news release issued by the FDA stresses that children ages two and under are at the greatest risk for methemoglobinemia, due primarily to the increased use of teething gels containing benzocaine during the tooth development phase. This is because the benzocaine, when ingested especially by young children, binds to the hemoglobin in our bloodstream and prevents them from delivering sufficient amounts of oxygen to the body from the lungs. Provided by BabyGanics, makers of “Peoplefriendly, Earth-friendly” products for children.

SEVEN HABITS OF HAPPY KIDS

he students at PS 23 are starting to use words like ‘synergize’ and ‘proactive,’ thanks to a new school-wide program based on a popular self-help book, The Seven Habits of Happy Kids,by Sean Covey.

T

“We teach them that proactive means they are in charge, they take responsibility for their own actions, and they initiate and do things before being asked. We teach them that ‘synergize’ means to work together with others. To take other ideas with their own and together they make a stronger team with better solutions,” said Renee Mazza, Assistant Principal of PS 23.

What are the Seven Habits of Happy Kids?

TEACH YOUR KIDS TO BE HAPPY WITH THESE GREAT TIPS AND BOOKS.

Habit 1: Be Proactive. Children need to know they are responsible for their actions, attitudes and moods. They are not to blame others for their wrong actions and they are to do the right thing without being asked– even when no one is looking. Books that teach this habit: • The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper • The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey • Marvin Redpost: Alone in His Teacher’s House by Louis Sachar • The Rainbabies by Laura Krauss • The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flourney Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. Children, like adults, need to plan ahead and set goals. They need to know that they make a difference whether in the classroom or within their family. They need to look for ways to be a good citizen, friend and family member. Books that teach this habit: • The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle • Strega Nona by Tomie DePaola • A Chair for my Mother by Vera B. Williams • Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni • Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox

Habit 3: Put First Things First. Children need to learn what is important, set priorities and make schedules for themselves. This will help to keep them disciplined and organized. Books that teach this habit: • Mr. Grumpy’s Outing by John Burningham • Mirette on the High Wire by Emily Arnold McCully • Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard • The Boy of the Three Year Nap by Dianne Snyder • A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams Habit 4: Think Win-Win. Children need to learn to balance what they want with considerations for others. They learn to make deposits in other peoples “Emotional Bank Accounts.” When conflicts arise, they look for third alternatives, one that will generate a win-win situation. Books that teach this habit: • Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister • Brave Irene by William Steig • Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt by Deborah Hopkinson • Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber • Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco Habit 5: Listen Before You Talk. Children learn to seek to understand first, then to be understood. They listen to people’s ideas and feelings and try to see things from their viewpoints. They learn to listen without interrupting.

They spend time with family and friends and they know that learning is everywhere. They also find meaningful ways to help others. They learn that a balance feels best. Books that teach this habit: • The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats • Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters by John Steptoe • Chicken Sunday by Patricia Polacco • The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Anderson • The Art Lesson by Tomie DePaola At PS 23, the children have been bringing the program’s philosophy to the home.“Parents are always mentioning how they hear about the seven habits at home,” said Renee Mazza. “At our September PTA meeting, our director of student services, Paul Procia, shared the seven habits with the parents.” After the faculty was trained, Principal Frank Campagna asked his teachers to work with their students to come up with mission statements for their classroom. Through their collaborative efforts, each class came up with what was important to them as a group, trying to incorporate the seven habits.

Before long the students began studying the seven habits with their teachers and were including them into their daily lives. At the school, each classroom now has a mission statement. In K-107 they were inspired by the acronym LEAD: Love to read, Enjoy learning together, Apply yourself to work, and Do the right thing. The fifth graders in 5-309, like all of the students at PS 23, strive to succeed in all tasks. In their mission statement, they include, “We will be role models for our younger peers by setting good examples. We will always think with the end in mind.” Grade 3-206 also reflects the positive attitude of all the students by proclaiming, “We are leaders! We do the right thing even when no one is watching. We are in control of what we do.”

“Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic.”

KARATE HELPS INCREASE: Coordination • Strength Flexibility • Self-Esteem Confidence

Assistant Principal Mazza believes the habit most often practiced is Habit 1: Be proactive. “It comes up the most right now in everything they do. The habits build upon one another so having this as a strong foundation is important.” With the proof in the pudding at PS 23, it is possible for each family to bring the seven habits of happy kids into their homes. Start by teaching your children to be proactive, beginning with the end in mind and putting first things first. Then teach them to play well with others by thinking win-win, seeking first to understand and then to be understood, and synergizing– working together with others. Show them how to take ideas–both their own and others’–to come up with better solutions. Finally, teach your children to take care of themselves: “Sharpen the Saw.” It is up to parents to teach children good habits and to lead by example. COVER STORY

ith the adoption of Violet, I felt our family was now complete. When I first held her tiny hand in a hospital in Texas, I was overwhelmed by the feeling that this was “meant to be.” Little did I know how my subsequent career choice because of her would lead to another “meant to be” moment.

W

When Violet joined our family, I was working full time but desperately wanted to spend more time with her. I didn’t want to miss her milestones any more than I had to. It was then that Eden II Programs, an agency that serves people with autism, approached me with an opportunity to work in the community at a part time level. The timing was perfect. I smile now when I realize how unaware I was of what an important huge choice this was for me and for Violet.

Autism A Staten Island Mom Navigates the Road to a Diagnosis

This past September, Violet was ready to discover a new world of learning via the preschool program at a local Catholic school. I couldn’t wait to buy her little uniform and Elmo schoolbag. It was comforting to me that she would be in the same school setting as my older daughter. On her first day, she cheerfully entered the school, welcomed by her sister and her preschool teacher. But after only a couple of days, the school called to alert me to some behavioral concerns. I knew Violet could sometimes be tough— very active and hard to focus, but I never thought there was anything wrong. My stomach sank as the teacher pointed out all the things “wrong” with my child; I felt they were jumping to conclusions without getting to really know her. Looking back however, I knew they were right; I just had yet to accept it myself. She lasted a week or two more before having to leave the school. I reached out to my lifeline, the executive director at the agency I happened to work for—Eden II. The friends I had made there and the colleagues from our staff meetings were now the support team I needed to help me navigate a system I had not before seen through the eyes of a mother.

My first step was getting a formal evaluation. From the information packet mailed to me, I randomly chose an evaluation site close to my home— Volunteers of America. I spent hours there answering questions and having Violet tested. When I had all of the written evaluations, I scheduled the IEP (Individualized Education Program). My work at Eden II taught me just how important early intervention is so I was ready to go to bat for Violet to make sure that she received all the services she would need, and she did: 20 hours of SEIT (basically a teacher just for her) and three hours of speech and occupational therapy per week. I started keeping a binder with all her papers, which became an invaluable tool to bring to meetings and to keep track of her progress. Each month, I see the signs a little more. Violet doesn’t recognize shapes and colors. She doesn’t have conversations with you; she often talks at you. She also has a lot of sensory issues that continue to increase. She plays on her own, not wanting to interact with the rest of the family when we try to set up cooperative play. I see now how she plays differently than many other children her age. Violet is now settled in one of Eden II’s SEIT classrooms where her teachers work with her four days a week. Being so young— she’s just three years old and still needs a nap! — she sometimes struggles with the intensity of the schedule. There are good days and there are some days when it’s really tough for both of us to manage. Recently, I took her seeking a diagnosis, which I’ve learned is important to accessing services. She again went through the evaluation process, playing with toys and being observed, while I filled out another book. This time she was given a formal diagnosis of autism and an increase in services.

Here I am, a mom working at an autism agency to be able to have time to spend with my child, and now I have a child with autism too? It’s a lot to digest. It’s hard to know what to say or how to react. The common line is “I’m so sorry for you!” Well, don’t be. I’m not, and I wouldn’t trade Violet for the world. The best thing someone can say to me right now is, “Hang in there, mom.” At the end of the day, I truly believe Violet was meant to be with me. My love for her doesn’t change, and I will never stop fighting to make sure she has every opportunity. It’s a tough road for the parents who have to constantly fight to get the services their child needs, but the good news is that there is support on Staten Island. Eden II offers Parents as Partners workshops free to Staten Island parents where expert staff discusses different topics. It’s also a great way to meet and network with other parents. As for now, I can’t look too far ahead. I just need to take it day by day, one doctor at a time, one evaluation at a time. That’s all I can handle, but that’s OK because I know I am doing the best I can for my daughter. Thankfully, because of my work at Eden II, I was more aware of what needed to be done to begin the navigation process early for the best outcome for Violet. I want to share my story to help other Staten Island moms as Autism Awareness Month this year takes on a new meaning for me. By Erika Hellstrom, a Staten Island mother of two beautiful daughters.

Everyone agrees. Sitting down to a relaxed meal with family members is nourishing in every possible way. Of course, behind that image of serenity, there’s often a frantic parent scrambling to plan, provision and prepare the food.

Apps That Take the Drudgery Out of Dinner

Now an avalanche of apps promises to simplify these tasks. Most of the sites below offer recipes, menu planning and even instant grocery lists. Zeroing in on the one that will work for your family is almost as challenging as finding a recipe everyone likes, so the following list is organized around your most urgent needs. Would you like to have someone else magically plan your meals? Are you looking for inspiring new recipes? Are you cooking to satisfy special needs? Many of the websites and apps are free, and even the subscription plans tend to offer free samples. Before making a commitment to any particular program, check out a meal or two to be sure they are a good match with your family’s tastes, lifestyle and budget. Give Me a Plan! Get organized. Howdoesshedoit.com, a website designed by a husband/wife team, is especially easy to use. Make a collection of recipes you like, taking their suggestions or importing your own ideas. Drag meals into the menu plan. Hit a button and get a grocery list. The website is free to those who sign up. An iPhone app called PlanShopEat costs $2.99. Keep it Simple. Thefresh20.com emails a weekly plan for five dinners that use only 20 fresh, in-season ingredients. Choose from Classic, Gluten-free, Lunch, or Vegetarian/Vegan plans. Cost is $5 per month, though Groupons are often available. Use What You Have. Supercook.com encourages you to look in your pantry and put ingredients—and leftovers—into a search engine. Then it generates a list of recipes that use what’s already in the house. Filter recipes to eliminate those that include nuts, gluten, meat, dairy, fish or shellfish. No time to cook. Thescramble.com is firmly grounded in the realities of family life. Subscribers get recipes for five dinners a week with an emphasis on seasonal produce. A helpful newsletter includes tips about problems ranging from picky eaters to tight food budgets. After a two week free trial, subscriptions cost $7/month for three months or $3/month for three years.

MARVELOUS MOTHER-DAUGHTER DATES

’ve discovered that the only parenting stage tougher than the terrible twos is the ‘terrible tweens.’ One day your sweet, lovable and funny child wakes up and finds you wrong and embarrassing- nearly all the time. Before my daughter becomes a teenager and I am wrong and embarrassing all the time, I plan to spend a lot of time with her, talking, sharing and having fun. Perhaps doing this will make the next stage just a bit easier.

I

I also hope to spend our time together in activities that support my parenting values. I want her to understand that TIME SPENT WITH YOUR YOUNG DAUGHTERS love and money are not the ARE TRULY AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE RELATIONSHIP. same thing. I want her to know that I respect her for so much more than her beauty. And I want her to know that while I am Craft Away: Visit a local craft shop for inspiration, go home her friend, I am first and foremost her mother. As tempting as and get to work. Bead bracelets, paint pottery or decorate a it is to take my daughter shopping or out for a manicure, I wreath. Work on a project together or make gifts for friends hope to find alternatives to these activities. or family members.

Here are some of my favorite Mother-Daughter Dates: Get Moving: Back when my daughter was a toddler, our favorite times were often spent at the park. Now that she is older, I still find that we can have a lot of fun outdoors. While going down the slide together is out of the question, bike rides, and walks have brought us plenty of laughs. For those more serious athletes, consider training and running a local 5K together. Soups On: Let your daughter choose her favorite meal and together, write the shopping list, go to the store, cook and eat. If this activity becomes a favorite, you can create a cookbook of all your creations. Bonding over food is a great way to talk and learn more about what is on your daughter’s mind.

Museum Magic: Discover what your local museum has to offer. Be it an art, history or science museum, you and your daughter are bound to find something interesting and learn something new. Many museums offer classes or lectures so if you find something that interests both of you, museum going can become a regular activity. Picnic Time: When my daughter was younger, we would often pack a snack to eat at the park or even in the backyard. Somehow, food eaten outside seemed more exciting. Now that she is older, we can create a more elaborate meal and find a grassy spot in a garden or park to enjoy time together. Volunteer: Tweens, by definition, spend a good deal of time thinking about themselves and the community directly around them. I love the chance to volunteer with my daughter both for the time it gives us together but also for

Watching older girls play a sport that she loves will be both fun and motivating for your daughter and attending the games together will give you both chances to talk and share. Mother Daughter Book Club: While the idea of a group of mothers and daughters coming together for a book club is a great one, it is also fun to explore a two-person group. When you and your daughter read the same book and then discuss it, there are many opportunities to discuss issues important to both of you. Coach a Team: Often, families automatically assume that the father should coach the daughter’s team. Why can’t mom be the coach? Attending practices and games is a great way to spend time together. Plant a Garden: Get outdoors and get dirty. Planting a garden (or a window box or small container) can bring continued mother daughter time as you tend the flowers you have planted. Girls Night IN: Make popcorn, put on comfy clothes and relax watching your daughter’s favorite movie. The chance to spend quality time at home is a treat in today’s busy world so really focus on your daughter and the conversations you can have. KID PHONES: CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

ccording to research, 22 percent of young children own a cell phone (ages 6-9), 60 percent of tweens (ages 10-14), and 84 percent of teens.

A

Many parents make the decision to buy their kids new cell phones and smartphones for safety reasons; they want to be able to reach the child anytime. Cost is also a factor. Cell phone industry experts say phones and family plans are both becoming more affordable. Also, as adults swap out their old devices for newer smart phones, it is easier to pass down a used phone. But for children, it is all about social life. A Pew study LEARN HOW YOU CAN KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE WHEN THEY USE THEIR CELL PHONE. found that half of 12- to 17year-olds sent at least 50 text video messaging. For a young child, look for basic phones. messages a day and texted their friends more than they Review all pre-programmed apps and phone capabilities talked to them on the phone or even face to face. beforehand. Of course, owning a cell phone comes with possible outside threats. Here are 10 tips to help keep your kid safe while using a cell phone: 1. Get Educated and Prepared. Talk to your kids about the dangers and consequences associated with inappropriate cell phone use. Discuss topics including sexting and texting while driving. Make sure you get caught up on the lingo of popular acronyms and initialisms. Ask your kids to save any abusive or problem messages to show an adult.

3. Use Parental Controls. If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe. . 4. Limit Usage. Designate time slots for talking — perhaps after homework and chores are completed, or before dinner. Don't let constant calls interrupt family time. It's easy for a chatty teen to cuddle up to a phone at bedtime, so check periodically.

2. Select Appropriate Phone Features. If your child is under 10, they probably don't need a phone with unlimited social networking or email capabilities. Likewise, the actual phone itself doesn’t need built-in features like a web browser or

5. Consider Monitoring Services. Perhaps your child is older, but you’re still not comfortable with him or her texting and emailing unmonitored. Using an online monitoring service allows you to keep track of when they are using the

phone (during school hours or late at night), and who they are communicating with most frequently. Look for one (such as SafetyWeb) that provides parents with comprehensive alerts and reports on their child's cell phone calls and text message activity. 6. Wait Before Answering. Instruct your child not to answer calls or text messages from numbers they don't recognize. If it is important, the caller will leave a message and then he can decide how to respond. Explain how to block calls from unwanted numbers. 7. Pre-program numbers. To help keep your kids safe, make sure their cell phones have all important phone numbers preprogrammed into it so they can always get a hold of someone if they’re in trouble. 8. Stay Organized. Always keep your child's cell phone charger in the same place. It's best to find a central location — like maybe the kitchen counter, or a table by the door. Mark the end of the monthly billing cycle on a calendar to remind her how long those dwindling minutes have to last.

These constructive ideas will stimulate imagination, creativity, intellect, problem solving and social skills. Best of all, they don’t require cables or batteries, can be taken anywhere and will amuse toddlers to teens. The lot of these items should fit in a small 9X12 inch container, such as a rectangular plastic box with a snap lid, a backpack or even a laptop side pocket or briefcase for ease of carrying to restaurants, doctors’ offices or airports.

The Busy Brain Kit for all Ages 1. Pipe-cleaners. These versatile little wires can be molded into cars, people and many other items for make-believe play.

2. Play Doh. Keep moist in a plastic Ziploc bag. Kids can make 3D sculptures for toys. With a digital camera, teens can make animated figure movies. Pass the cheese, Gromit!

3. Masking tape or cellotape 4. Scissors 5. Small whiteboard and dry-erase markers, with a cloth for erasing. Endless opportunities to make signs, keep game scores, or play picture games. 6. Coloring markers. My kids used to color the doctor’s waiting room bedcovering paper! 7. Pens and Pencils. Play Hangman or other word games. Write in a journal or just draw! 8. Plain paper for drawing houses and scenes, or constructing cars, buildings, items and people to be colored, cut out and assembled with tape and scissors. 9. Deck of cards. Great for teens to play Cheat, Snap, Spoons, Blackjack, Uno and many other games. 10. Dice for playing addition, multiplication, and chance challenges. Dice also work with homemade board games created from above items. The play value in this box of items will last a long time, especially if you only keep it for on-the-go errands. In the rare event that your child might get bored, you could also bring a book, and read to your child. Encourage your school-ager or teen to bring along a book too.

PARENT & CHILD TIME By Ann Clinton

“Mom, here’s my list,” almost 11-year old Liam said happily to his mom. His mom, who was stirring cupcake batter, looked up from the large blue bowl full of a creamy yellow mixture and asked, “What list is that, Liam?” Liam held up a white lined paper with writing on it and as his mother peered at it, he asked, “Mom, do you need

eyeglasses. It is a list, my birthday list.” “Oh, I see you have two columns,” his mom observed. “That’s right. There are two columns because one column is for my old friends and one column is for my new friends. I want to invite them to celebrate my birthday in a few weeks.” “Oh, okay, Liam. What would you like to do for your birthday? Would you like a bowling party or to go to the movies or to an indoor swimming pool?” “Those ideas all sound good but I have another idea,” Liam advised. “What is your idea?” his mom asked as she continued to stir the cupcake mixture. “Well,” Liam said looking at his mom with a small smile, “I thought we could have the party here with a basketball game out in the yard and maybe a scavenger hunt. Oh, and your famous cupcakes for my cake.” Liam’s mom laughed and said, “Sounds like you have given this party a lot of thought.” “I did my homework on this birthday project and it has been fun,” Liam offered.

He looked at his mom and asked, “Do you like my idea? Can we have my birthday celebration and a scavenger hunt? Can we?” Before his mom could answer him, Liam continued, “Here is my list of friends I would like to invite.” “Let me put this cupcake batter into the pans and then into the oven. Then we

Liam watched as his mom spooned batter into the cupcake pan. As soon as she put the filled pan into the oven, Liam got ready to show his mom the list. “I’m going to invite Joe, Michael, Philip, Jillian and Jennifer from our old neighborhood. From our new neighborhood, I’m inviting Peter, Kimmie, Danny, Michael and Brandon. I thought if it’s a nice day, we could play a couple of games of “Yes, I see from your list you have Kimmie, Jillian and Jennifer,” his mom responded. “I guess we’ll have to have my party on a Saturday, don’t you think?” Liam queried his mother. “Saturday would be the best day,” his mom agreed.

“Two things I have to ask,” Liam said. “What are the two things?” his mom wanted to know. “Do you know how to do a scavenger hunt and will you make me a cupcake birthday cake?”

“I think I can manage a scavenger hunt. And, you know I really enjoy baking special cupcakes and decorating them,” his mom answered. “What theme would you like for your birthday?” Liam looked thoughtful for a moment and then snapped his fingers and said, “How about basketball or a mystery theme?” “Hmm,” his mom said. “Maybe we could do both. A basketball cupcake for your candles and mystery bags for the party favors.” “Wow, Mom. I like that idea. You know what I need to know?” “What, Liam?” “What do I put on the invitation? I’m going to make the invitations like a big basketball. I’ll use the bottom of a big glass to trace a circle on white paper. That will be the basketball – oh, I guess I’d better fold the paper so I can write the party information inside.” “How are you going to decorate your invitations?” Liam smiled at his mom. “I’m going to use quarters to draw small basketballs on the big round invitation and color them brown and I’m going to use brown

Fifty minutes later, Liam came back into the kitchen to show his mom his original, one of a kind, invitations. “How do you like them, Mom?” His mom took the packet of papers Liam offered to her. She looked through each one and finally looked at Liam. “Liam, you did a wonderful job. Your art work is really good. I hope you made an extra invitation so that I can have one. Before he could answer, the doorbell sounded. “I’ll get it,” Liam said as he ran to the door. “Hey, Mom, it’s Philip and Aunt Liz. Come on in. Philip, I have an invitation to my birthday party for you. Here, I made it myself.” Philip took the invitation, looked at it and read the information. “Put me down

n the classic film "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy famously uttered the phrase, "There's no place like home." Now, several decades later, that sentiment remains very dear to people's hearts.

While homes are sanctuaries for many people, a home can be dangerous. The U.S. Home Safety Council states that every year, nearly 20,000 people die and 21 million medical visits are needed due to home accidents, the majority of which are attributed to falls, in the United States. The elderly and children are the age groups most susceptible to home accidents. Research by the Harvard Medical School has found that accidents and the chance for fatalities increases dramatically over the age of 65. However, accidents can occur in any age group, and making safety changes around the house is a proactive step to avoid accidents. Here are some of the common injuries that occur around the home: Slamming fingers in doors and windows: For small children, severe injuries -- even amputations - can result from slammed fingers in doors and windows.

Falls: Falls, especially down the stairs, cause more trips to the emergency room than any other accident in the U.S.

Cooking injuries: Burns and scalding from cooking top the list of injuries at home. Cuts from a knife while preparing food are also leading dangers.

Electrocution: All it takes is a faulty outlet or a frayed cord to provide a shock, one that can prove fatal.

Although not all injuries around the home can be foreseen, the majority of them are preventable. With a combination of certain safety items on hand and precautionary actions, home-related injuries can be reduced. Fire extinguisher. This can be kept on hand for minor fires. Smoke alarm. These alert to the presence of smoke, which could be indicative of a home fire. Carbon monoxide alarm. These alarms are a necessity to detect carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that can cause death if inhaled in high amounts. Carbon monoxide alarms are frequently installed by furnaces and bedrooms. Adequate lighting. Since falls are so common, having lights on landings and entryways can alleviate falls due to the inability to see. Radon detectors. Another gas that is difficult to detect by smell or sight is radon, which may be leaching from surrounding soil into a home, particularly problematic on the lower level of a home. Wire organizers. Bundles of wires behind televisions and other electronics can be tripping hazards and cause shocks or electrocution if touched in an improper way. Storage devices can keep them safely tucked out of sight. First aid kit. A medical kit will have all of the supplies necessary to treat minor injuries. Grab bars. People who have mobility issues can install grab bars in hallways and bathrooms for extra support. Door and window guards.A number of safety devices exist for windows and doors, including foam protectors that prevent slammed fingers or hands. Fire escapes. Those who live in multilevel homes can invest in retractable ladders that attach to windows and provide an emergency point of exit.

GIGI’S WORLD by Giavanna and Gina Schrecker

Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.

A Season of Inspiration

Thank goodness for spring. It’s such a great time to get inspired. The weather is warmer, the jackets are thinner, and we’re just all-around excited to see what’s new and what’s next. Even though my family loves Winter (especially the snow we got!), we’re also driven by the change of seasons, so this is a favorite time of year for us. Mom is one of those who decorates for every holiday and/or month, so it started to look a little like spring early on in March when she put out our Easter decorations. I enjoy helping her display all of our seasonal goodies and often imagine what it’d be like to have my own house adorned in a style all my own one day. My parents tell me that I’ll probably acquire a lot of their tastes and traits – we already joke that I’m a miniature silly personality-rich version of my dad – but I’m not so sure. I tend to be inspired by bright neon colors where Mom favors traditional hues; Dad is inclined to display Yankees and Hulk-themed décor, where I prefer peace signs and monkeys.

It all makes me realize how everyone is special and can be inspired by different things. My sister loves makeup, so you can give her a tube of lipstick and it’ll make her day. As for me, I’m a school supply freak – I never met a mini stapler, pack of Post-it notes, pencils, pens, thumbtacks, or Sharpies I didn’t love! Mom and Dad say it’s refreshing to them to see us kids get so excited about little things and that we’re a good reminder of how important inspiration truly is – no matter what it is or from where we find it. Apparently, there are a lot of people who run from inspiration and just aren’t happy in their lives; it’s like they’re stuck in a world where it’s winter all the time. Yikes! I think that as we head into spring, we should each remember all those little things that can truly refresh and rejuvenate us. I’ll remind my mom to savor the smile she gets from putting out a new tablecloth signaling the change of a season. And the next time Dad finds an interesting Hulk figure in the comic book store, I’ll crack a joke about how cool it is that the Hulk makes him anything but angry! This Spring, be inspired!

FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
