“I love checking to see where to bring my three-year-old during the day for some play time. Recently I found ads in your magazine for Kids 'n Shape and Party Jam. Both really nice bday places. Kids 'n Shape's free play was awesome. They are clean and attentive. Lots of toys for the kids to share and well padded for lil bumps and trips. They are very fairly priced and we will be going back frequently.” –Tina Nicholas

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Readers, Staten Island Chuck was right once again! Winter held her icy grip till the bitter end, which only makes celebrating Spring so much more delightful. March did give us more light at the end of the day, putting a smile on many of our faces. I am personally basking in the thought of leaving the house wearing a light jacket or sweater. Yes, for me it is often the simple things in our lives that make me happy. In her column this month, Gigi has her own thoughts about the warm weather. What about you? What is it about the springtime that lifts your spirits? If spending more time outdoors is on your list, we can help. Be sure to check our calendar of events for fun and interesting ideas. For your added convenience, we update our online calendar as new events are planned, so you can pop on your smartphone, tablet, or computer anytime! For many parents, Common Core has been as challenging as our winter weather! In Marianna Randazzo's article, Common Core Conundrum, she explains the goals and ideas behind the new standards. (There are additional tips on helping your child on our website.) In our Staten Island community, the topic of Common Core brings about as many opinions as the New York Wheel in St. George! Join us on our Facebook page to discuss and share opinions, ideas, and thoughts about these and many more hot topics. We are happy that you really "like" our page because with our steadily growing audience, so many more parents are benefiting by interacting with our network of Staten Island parents. We are all in this world of parenting together, you know! Let’s share our knowledge. Are you looking for ways to "green-up" this Earth Day? Read Six Tips for Going Green – One Baby Step at a Time for simple ways to start the transformation. Talk to your family and see which ones you can adapt, or come up with some of your own ideas and share them with us on our Facebook page. April is a busy month for many of us celebrating holidays. Whether it is a Passover celebration or Easter service, it is a time for families to gather with loved ones and honor what is often part of a longstanding family tradition. On behalf of our Staten Island Parent team, we wish you a happy holiday.

child? Would you like the opportunity to meet with experts to discuss issues facing those with special needs? If you answered “yes” to any these questions, you should attend this year’s Annual Special Needs Fair. This year’s fair, sponsored by Senator Andrew Lanza, will be held Friday, April 4 at the JCC from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This year’s fair hopes to have all the information parents of children with special needs are looking for. Experts will be on hand to discuss city and state programs designed for people with special needs and health and educational services. There will also be panel discussions, workshops, and free handouts and giveaways.

It’s back! After being canceled due to budget cuts last year, Staten Island’s Fleet Week will be returning this Memorial Day Weekend. Military ships will be docking at Stapleton Homeport on Wednesday, May 21 and departing on Tuesday, May 27. During this week, visitors will have the chance to take tours of the ship free of charge. While anyone is welcome, Fleet Week organizers make an effort to make the tours extra special for little ones attending. There are special school tours being held Thursday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday there will be tours held for Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts. All members of the Staten Island Fleet Week board and staff are volunteers and they are always looking for new volunteers to help out. Among the tasks volunteers are needed to help with are to cook and serve meals and assist with school tours. Staten Island Fleet Week is also asking local restaurants and organizations to donate meals and come down and serve them. Visit our site for a link to Staten Island Fleet Week’s web site for upto-date news on events and information on how to volunteer.

SET YOUR CHILD ON A HEALTHIER PATH THIS SPRING
t’s important for people of all ages to stay active, including our youth. With all the gadgets and gizmos that consume daily life, along with school work, two-working parent households, or a belief that he or she just isn’t good at sports, it may be hard to motivate your child to get up and get moving.
I
But according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if kids don’t start developing healthy habits at an early age, they may never start. Today, more than one-third of kids in the United States are overweight and obese. Children and adolescents who are obese are more likely to become obese adults and are more at risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke, among other disorders.
PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES CAN PROVIDE NUMEROUS BENEFITS FOR CHILDREN.
Aside from physical health, participation in athletic activities can help with emotional health as well, something I’ve seen firsthand in my career in youth sports over the years. Kids who participate in team sports or group activities develop social skills, learn about leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship, gain selfesteem, and seem to have a positive outlook on life. But choosing the right activities for a child can be a difficult task, and if you don’t place him or her in the right activity, your child can become bored or frustrated. Have them test out different activities that are age-appropriate, whether it’s baseball, soccer, swimming, dance, gymnastics, karate or any other of a slew of programs available to children on Staten Island. See what they enjoy and what sticks, and encourage them to keep moving forward. Parents can have more influence over their kids – even if they are already teenagers – than one may think.

Even during the summer months, sending a child to summer camp can have a positive effect on their overall health and wellbeing. Camp is typically a place where friendships are made, and a variety of activities are tested on a daily basis, so your child can try new things and gain new skills. You don’t want good habits learned throughout the year to be tossed out during summer when kids are at home and away from school activities that keep them moving. And parents, don’t forget that children tend to mirror your behaviors, and being a positive role model is just as important as signing them up for the activities. Physical health is a year-round endeavor and often takes participation of the whole family, not just the child or individual. But it’s definitely an endeavor worth taking. EASTER TRADITION
>>>CRACKING
EGG MYTHS IN TIME FOR EASTER
aster eggs are one of the more popular symbols of the holiday and the centerpiece of many family traditions come Easter Sunday. Easter eggs symbolize fertility and rebirth to some, but many people associate Easter eggs with youngsters scouring the yard in search of treasure. Whether Easter eggs are associated with secular or religious beliefs, these colorful staples of Easter Sunday are an integral part of springtime holiday decor and celebrations. Certain misconceptions about Easter eggs have developed over time, and the following are some of the more common myths about Easter eggs that have made the rounds.
E
Myth: Easter eggs are safe to eat after your egg hunt is over. ALTHOUGH MANY MYTHS SURROUND EASTER EGGS, Fact: Hard-boiled eggs THE TRUTH IS JUST WAITING TO BE UNHATCHED. generally remain safe to eat at room temperature for about two shed on the cross. The hard shell of the egg symbolizes the sealed hours. If the temperature outside or indoors is very warm, the eggs Tomb of Christ for many. It is better to dispose of colored eggs after the annual egg hunt or at least keep hard-boiled eggs refrigerated until the hunt begins. Myth: It is unsafe to eat all dyed Easter eggs. Fact: Whether dyed eggs are safe or not depends on the type of dye used. Many kits use vegetable-based dyes that are food-safe. These same pigments are used in traditional food coloring. Even if the dye has penetrated beneath the shell, it should still be safe for consumption. Kits for blown-out eggs may use dyes that are not food-safe. Also, people who are allergic to certain food dyes might want to avoid eating dyed eggs.
Myth: An Easter egg roll is an American tradition. Fact: In Germany, England, and other countries, children traditionally rolled eggs down hillsides Looking for fun at Easter. This practice may have initially symbolized the rolling away of the rock from Jesus Christ's tomb before his resurrection. When European immigrants arrived in North America, they brought these Easter egg traditions with them. One of the more in Staten Island and popular Easter egg rolls of modern day New Jersey? Myth: A raw egg will stand on end during the spring equinox. Fact: It is believed that because the sun is equidistant from the south and north poles on the spring equinox, special gravitational forces apply on this day. These forces should make it possible to balance an egg on its end only on this day. However, eggs can be balanced at other times of the year. Perhaps instead of hiding eggs for Easter, families may choose to hold egg-balancing competitions.

PASSOVER TRADITION
>>> HISTORY
OF PASSOVER CELEBRATIONS
very year Jewish people celebrate Passover, a commemoration of the liberation of the Jews from slavery under Egyptian leaders.
E
Religious texts tell that God helped the children of Israel escape slavery in Egypt with the assistance of Moses and 10 plagues. Israelites were employed as slaves to build new monuments to Egypt's farreaching power. Moses was the adopted brother of the Pharoah at the time. Moses had fled the palace years earlier due to disillusionment over his Egyptian upbringing and his ties to the Israelite slaves. One evening, Moses was contacted by God speaking through a burning bush that would not be consumed by fire. God called out to Moses and commissioned him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt after hearing their pleas and witnessing their suffering.
PASSOVER CELEBRATIONS CAN BE TRACED BACK TO THE EXODUS OF THE ISRAELITES FROM EGYPT MORE THAN 3,000 YEARS AGO.
Moses asked God to choose another for the mission, but the Lord was adamant. Moses set out to speak to Pharoah, but was unsuccessful in his efforts. It was then that God helped Moses' effort by inflicting the 10 Plagues, also referred to as the Biblical Plagues in the Christian bible. The plagues were designed to contrast the overwhelming power of the Israelite God from the importance of the Egyptian gods. One of the plagues occurred when God turned the Nile River's water into blood. He also brought on hordes of frogs, lice and flies. God brought pestilence to Egyptian livestock and then boils to Egyptian people. Plagues of hail, locusts, and darkness followed. When these efforts did not produce the freedom sought by the Israelites, God said he would go through Egypt and all of the firstborn sons of the Egyptians, including Pharoah's own son, would perish. Moses was informed to tell the Israelites to mark their own doors with lamb's blood so that the Lord would pass over these homes and spare the Israelites' children from harm. This final plague devastated the Egyptian people and proved so horrific as to warrant the freedom of the Israelite slaves. Pharoah freed them, and Moses led them all on a mass exodus from Egypt.

Passover, or Pesach, is first mentioned in the Torah's account of the Exodus from Egypt. The word "pesach" is believed to mean "he hovered over, guarding," which is the image evoked by the retelling of the Passover story. Today there are many Passover traditions that date back to early history. Jewish people may dine on lamb or goat meat in memory of the lambs sacrificed. All forms of leavened bread or leavening agents (chametz) are avoided as the fleeing Israelite slaves had no leavened bread to take with them on their journey. Homes are cleared of all leavening agents. Firstborn sons are commanded to observe the Fast of the Firstborn. Passover seder feasts are enjoyed, and men and women drink four cups of wine during the meal. Homes are made Kosher for the purpose of the holiday, and a separate set of Passover dishes, glassware, and silverware that have never touched chametz are used. Games, songs and traditional readings are all part of the Passover celebration, which lasts for seven or eight days depending on the area of the world in which it is being observed. Historically, together with Shavuot and Sukkot, Passover completes the trio of the pilgrimage festivals of the Jewish people.

SET A GOOD FITNESS EXAMPLE Are you setting a proper fitness example for your child? If your daughter or son is on her or his cell phone, or surfing the Internet, or watching TV instead of being outside running around, riding a bike or playing something with a ball, you may very well be the reason. “Kids imitate their parents,” said 30-year-old Frank Salzone, Jr. “If you’re on the phone too much, checking your emails or playing video games, don’t be surprised if they spend their days doing the same thing. “Technology is moving us forward, but at a cost.” Salzone isn’t a philosopher or child psychologist. He’s a personal trainer. And he’s seen his share of out-of-shape kids — and adults. His job is to help them get fit, or stay fit, or get more fit.
S ArvY D Y N e ic N SU ervention Se s Early Int
With the warm weather coming after our brutal winter, Salzone encourages parents to get outside and engage in fun, physical activities with their children. And the group trainer for Equinox health clubs in Manhattan says formal exercise programs aren’t necessary. “If parents make an effort to stay healthy, their kids will most likely follow them,” said Salzone, a former baseball and football player at Monsignor Farrell HS. “Do something fun and take your kids with you — walk, jog, throw the football around. Get them to be interested in what you’re doing, and make it something active.”
MAKING THE WORLD BRIGHTER, ONE CHILD AT AT TIME
Children should be playing at least 60 minutes a day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative recommends the same thing, as does the National Football League’s Play 60 movement.

So what can you do to help your children get and stay active on a daily basis? It doesn’t need to be a sport. You can do something as simple as walk. Go to the park, the mall, the zoo, a museum, and do it as a family. Your kids won’t even realize they are exercising. Go bicycle riding. You will need to find a safe location, which varies depending on the ages of all involved. But riding a bike is a great way to burn calories and build muscle. Ice skating is a fun-yet-physical wintertime activity, as swimming is
in the summer. Play catch. Kick a soccer ball back and forth, although you need to be careful. Adults — especially those who’ve never played soccer — sometimes accidentally kick the ball with too much force and can hurt the child. Kick the ball with the inside of your foot and make sure it rolls to the child. We used to take our youngest to the golf driving range. Even though I don’t play golf, he had an interest and it was a good way to get him moving. And, surprisingly, it burns as many calories as throwing around a Frisbee — which, by the way, is another fun option. Weather not great? Go bowling. Nice outside? Go to the park and shoot a basketball around. And while home chores are not thought of as a way to get exercise, getting the kids involved around the house serves a dual purpose: teaching them responsibility and burning calories. Weeding and raking the garden burn as many calories as playing baseball or softball. And mowing the lawn is as strenuous as skiing or going for a leisurely swim. In 2012, Salzone placed second in the online reality series Fit or Flop — a show aimed at finding the next fitness star. His program, The Foundation Method, focuses on ways to help people who are overweight or hesitant to become active. Engaging in any of these activities, says Salzone, will benefit you and your child.

SIX TIPS FOR GOING GREEN — ONE BABY STEP AT A TIME
arth Day is upon us again. Are you looking for ways to “green up” your life? Perhaps you want to save money? Maybe you have read about chemicals in processed food and want to do better for your children? Green living can enhance the quality of life for your entire family. And it’s not difficult to do.
E
Going “green” not only makes a positive impact on the environment, but can also have a positive impact on your wallet, and your health. Amy Landisman, former editor of the e-magazine Peachy Green says even a small change such as washing your clothes in cold ONCE YOU GO GREEN, YOU’LL BECOME A RECYCLING MACHINE! water rather than hot can save you $60 a year. Landisman Go Paperless. Excellent reasons to consider making the home “greener.” Here are some simple ways to implement a “greener” lifestyle with very little effort. Recycle. Recycling is the easiest place to get started if you are looking for ways to reduce your footprint on the planet. Most cities and counties provide recycle bins making it as easy to recycle as it is to throw out trash. Recycling is also an easy habit to teach our children.

RecycleBank and TerraCycle provide incentives and usually free postage to mail in hard to recycle items, like the plastic from diaper packages, Capri Sun wrappers, and other items. Recyclebank.com recently even started accepting toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes for recycling. Recycle non-ordinary items such as batteries, light bulbs, printer cartridges, etc. Batteries and light bulbs contain very dangerous elements that leak into the soil and the water supply when they are thrown in the regular garbage, but are not usually accepted by the city or county recycling trucks. However, these items can be recycled and stores such as Best Buy usually have receptacles right at the inside of their stores. Collect up all of these types of items over time and quickly drop them off when you are out running errands. As “green living” becomes a more popular concept, it is becoming easier to make lifestyle changes and to teach your children how to live in a more ecofriendly fashion. My children take the recyclables out to the bin each evening, and at 5 and 3 they already know how to do it and it will forever be a part of their life. FERTILITY MYTHS ctomom, John & Kate Plus Eight, and various other multiple birth stories with alarming statistics often overshadow Advanced Reproductive Technologies that are aiding over 6 million couples in the U.S. building families. Often couples try for years to have a child before they seek help when they could get a basic fertility work-up that would indicate if there is a problem. The myths that prevent couples from seeking help are numerous, but below are some of the more popular misconceptions about Fertility treatments debunked by Dr. Elizabeth Barbieri, a board-certified specialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Oregon Reproductive Medicine.
O
Myth: You could get cancer from the treatment. Fact: This debate is ongoing in the field, but the National Institutes of Health suggests there is no correlation. It finds that overall, ovulation-inducing fertility treatments like Clomid and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) do not significantly increase a woman's odds of developing breast cancer or other cancers. Myth: Women are having children later and later – the biological clock isn’t an issue anymore. Fact: While many of the Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) do treat women over-40, there are more challenges as we age. Our bodies and reproductive capabilities diminish as we age, making it more challenging to get pregnant. Many older women are able to create their families through the use of donor eggs rather than their own eggs. A donor egg may be able to correct for the biological clock, but many women may not disclose that this is how they conceived, supporting the misnomer that it is still easy to conceive as we age.

Myth: My period is always regular so I can’t have an issue with Infertility. Fact: A regular period is a good sign but does not indicate that you are fertile. There are many issues that
you can have even with a regular period including Endometriosis or a blocked fallopian tube. Also, a regular period will never tell you if there is a male infertility issue that is going undiagnosed. Myth: I will have twins or triplets if I do IVF. Fact: Twins and triplet pregnancies most often occur after transferring two, three, or more embryos. It is critical to go to a doctor who will be responsible and follow guidelines for limiting the numbers of embryos to transfer. There is published data on www.SART.org which reports the twin rate and triplet rate for every IVF clinic in the United States. Your best research is to ask to speak with other fertility patients for a doctor that uses single embryo transfers. Even with transferring one embryo, there is a 1% risk that the embryo may split into two, resulting in identical twins. Myth: If I just keep trying each month, I will eventually get pregnant. Fact: This is not always true and many couples waste very valuable “fertility time” with trying. Almost 99 percent of fertility issues can be solved with medication or treatment. Trying on your own for more than a year isn’t a good idea, at any age. If you are over 40, seek help after 6 months of trying. Myth: Our problems are too serious to be treated. We are meant to be childless even if we don’t want to be. Fact: Almost all couples who undergo fertility treatment do have their child through many options that are available to couples today. If you want to build a family, there are so many options that can be explored – many options including a variety of medical and surgical interventions, and advanced fertility treatments with donor egg, donor sperm, and donor embryos, so do not resign yourself to a future that you do not want. Myth: I am too emotional and worried about getting pregnant; if I only could learn to relax, then I will get pregnant. Fact: Emotions and pregnancy do not go hand-inhand. If you have a medical fertility issue, no amount of relaxing will ever help. It is normal for many women to feel upset and overwhelmed when they are struggling to conceive. Your emotions are not preventing you from getting pregnant. Myth: I need to eat better and exercise to get pregnant. Fact: While eating well and exercising are helpful for everyone, these two things do not dictate whether or not you will get pregnant. Obesity, however, can cause issues conceiving and you could require additional medical care if you are trying to get pregnant. By Elizabeth Barbieri, MD, FACOG. Dr. Barbieri, a fertility doctor at Oregon Reproductive Medicine, specializes in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.

GROWING UP ONLINE by Carolyn Jabs
Sixty minutes a day. That’s the minimum amount of physical activity recommended for children, 6-17, by the Centers for Disease Control. Some kids meet that goal effortlessly. They can’t wait to walk the dog, belong to a team that practices every afternoon or nag their parents to go on long hikes and bike rides.
e Plac The Be For To mmer s Su nastic Gym
Other kids need a little encouragement to step away from their electronic devices so they can get active. Thankfully, some of that encouragement now comes from the devices themselves. Some very innovative programmers have designed gadgets and apps that promise to make family fitness fun. Which one will be motivating in your household? Look for an app that intersects with things your family cares about. Here are some suggestions:

Just the Facts. Eat-And-Move-O-Matic is a very simple app that answers one question: How many minutes of Activity X will burn the calories in Food Y. This colorful app is easy enough for elementary school kids to understand and use. (Free from the App Store) Move for Good. Charity Miles has arranged for up to a million dollars to be donated to good causes—if people use their app to exercise. Simply download the program, choose a charity, tuck your phone in your pocket and get going. The corporate sponsors kick in a dime for every mile of biking and a quarter for every mile of running. If you exercise together, every phone in the family can donate to a different cause. (Free from the App Store and Google Play) Tangible Rewards. Zamzee is a tiny accelerometer that records motion. When the device, which looks like a flash drive, is clipped onto shoes or slipped into a pocket, your child earns points for any physical activity--sweeping the floor, climbing stairs, jumping rope, dancing, etc. Plug Zamzee into a USB and kids can see graphic evidence of how active they’ve been. They also earn points that can be donated to charity or used to purchase virtual or real rewards including apps and games. ($29.95 from Zamzee.com) Batting Balls (or Bugs). Ballstrike and Buglylon turn iPads and Windows 8 tablets into something that resembles a Kinect at a fraction of the price. Just set the tablet upright on a flat surface, step back and use your body to pop balls (or smash bugs). The app, which has six levels, tracks calories burned and allows your child to share photos of their best moves. (Free from the App Store and Windows)

Run for Your Life. Zombies, Run! isn’t for little kids, but teens who want to stay fit may find this immersive app very motivating. The user maps the course they plan to run, and then the program devises a story
about finding supplies for a community besieged by the undead. Periodically, the app announces that zombies are in the vicinity and their noisy breathing makes most runners pick up the pace. The app includes 33 missions and young people can also incorporate their favorite music. ($3.99 at the App Store and GooglePlay) Walk for the World. The Walk is a better choice for teens (and adults) who don’t care to jog. The game, designed in the UK, starts with the premise that a bomb has exploded in the London underground. The only way to save the world is to carry a package from one end of the British Isles to the other, encountering misadventures along the way. The game is intended to cover three months of walking, long enough for most people to get a good habit established. ($2.99 at the App Store and Google Play) Football Fanatics. NFL Play 60 encourages children to get their 60 minutes of activity by running, turning and jumping over virtual obstacles. Kids control the character in the game by holding a phone or table that detects their movements. As they progress, they collect hearts that make the character invincible from the American Heart Association and coins that buy virtual gear from the NFL. Both organizations cooperated to create the game which gives young football fans a fix without risking a concussion. (Free from the App Store and Google Play) Good Form for Athletes. IronKids was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics to minimize the risk of injuries in young athletes. The 45-minute workout emphasizes the correct way to do exercises that build strength, balance, and endurance so it’s ideal for teens and pre-teens who want to be in good shape for team tryouts. ($3.99 from the App Store) Peer Encouragement—and Competition. Fitocracy makes it very easy to keep track of a fitness routine, especially repetitive exercises such as weightlifting. Users set goals and earn points by achieving them. More important, Fitocracy taps into the power of social media, making it easy to find other people who enjoy the same kind of workout. Teens can learn from those who are more experienced, exchange encouraging words, and even challenge others to friendly competition. (Basic level free from the App store and Google Play) Of course, sometimes the very best way to get everyone up and moving is to put on the right music. You may already have a playlist of favorites, but if you need some inspiration, check out kidbeatz.com where you can find family friendly hiphop renditions of childhood standards. Buzzle has a list of classic dance tunes suitable for kids (buzzle.com/articles/dance-songs-for-kids.html) and Common Sense Media screens contemporary songs so unexpected lyrics won’t bring your dance party to a screeching halt (commonsensemedia.org/lists/dance-tracks). using the LATCH system to secure the safety seat into the car and rely on the vehicle's seat belts instead. The new law was put into effect in the United States in February 2014 and may be adopted elsewhere as time goes on. Using the car's seat belts may require a refresher course in safety and how to route the belts properly. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual as well as the instruction guide provided with the child safety seat. Seat belts will need to be fully extended and "locked" before they can be routed through the safety seat. Drivers are advised to still use the top tether of the LATCH system to further secure the head of the safety seat. Drivers unsure about regulations can consult with their pediatricians and have child safety seat installation checked at various police stations, fire stations and first aid buildings. Parents and other caregivers need to stay abreast of changes in safety guidelines for their children, as recommendations for child safety seats are always evolving.

The April sky was blue and cloudless. The branches of the trees were just beginning to bud and swayed gently in the breeze. Only Erica and Monica were aware of the beauty of the day. They were outside in the driveway washing Clean Cars their cars of the winter grime. Ryan was off working and and he, too, might have missed the beauty of the day. Ice Hockey Monica went into the house and said to her two cousins, Philip and Liam, “What are you guys doing? Don’t you want to come out and help Erica and me with washing our cars?” If Monica remembered correctly, last summer the two boys really enjoyed splashing the cars with the hose. “Can’t do it,” Philip replied. “We are watching an important hockey game,” Liam advised. “Maybe when the game is over, we’ll come and help but this is a playoff game and very important to us hockey fans.” Philip added. Erica had heard the conversation of Monica and Philip and Liam when she went into the house for a drink of water. “Why aren’t you two helping us? Last year you two really had fun washing the car with the hose and shining it dry with the old towels.” “It is still fun,” Philip advised Erica. “But, today is a playoff game and it is something I wanted to watch.” “Yeah, and tomorrow when the kids at school talk about the game, I can join in the conversation,” Liam explained. Erica laughed and said, “Okay, I understand. Didn’t I sit with Eric at the hockey game at Yankee Stadium in freezing January weather? I still can’t see hockey in warm weather. I think it should always be played in freezing cold weather.” It was Liam’s turn to laugh. “Well, the weather may be warmer but in Madison Square Garden it is cold at the hockey games.” Monica wanted to know how many playoff games had to be played. “It’s the best of seven series,” Philip told her. “Well, I’m going back outside to finish washing my car. I’m keeping one small spot dirty so you two can clean it after the hockey game is over,” Monica stated. Just as she was walking out the door, Liam and Philip yelled in unison, “SCORE!” Erica looked at Monica and said, “With that much enthusiasm, I guess we can’t expect Liam and Philip to give up the game to be outdoors with us, even if it is a beautiful day.” Outside again, Monica and Erica resumed cleaning their cars. It was while they were busy with their cars that Ryan came up the driveway. He asked, “Can anybody get their car washed here? Or, is it just for the car owners who live in this house?” Monica was just finishing her car and she said to Ryan, “You can use our hose but the labor will be all yours. I am finished with car washing for today.” Erica, who had been on the other side of her car, away from Ryan and cleaning
her tires, stood up and was surprised to see her cousin. “I didn’t know you were here. I didn’t hear you come up the driveway.” “I thought if you and Monica had a car washing service, I’d leave my car while I go inside to watch the hockey game. Philip and Liam are here already aren’t they?” Erica responded, “Yes, Ryan, Philip and Liam are inside watching the hockey game. And, no this is not a car washing service. It is a do it yourself car wash.” Ryan laughed, “Yeah, Monica pretty much said the same thing. Oh well, I’ll go inside and join the hockey crowd.” Monica looked at Erica, “I’m about ready to be one of the hockey crowd. How about you?” Erica picked up the water pail and brush and said, “I’ll join the crowd. My car is done. It’s as shiny as I can make it,” “Okay, then let’s take off our car washing hats and put on our ice hockey fan caps,” Monica replied. “What’s the score?” Ryan asked as he walked into the living room and saw Philip and Liam. The TV was on but the game was not. “It’s not over already is it?” “No” his brother replied. “It is only a commercial. The second period will start after this commercial.” Before Philip could tell Ryan the score, Erica and Monica came into the living room. “Is the game over?” Erica asked. Liam answered his cousin, ”No, the game is not over.” Philip joined in and said the score was 2-0 in favor of the Rangers. Monica wanted to know how many hockey teams there were. “I’ve heard of the Boston Bruins and I know there are some teams in Canada. Right?” “I’ll have to count them,” Philip answered. Liam interjected, “I know the name of some U.S. teams, like the Anaheim Ducks, the St. Louis Blues, the Chicago Black Hawks, the San Jose Sharks…” “And,” Philip added, “There are the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Colorado Avalanche.” “What are the names of the Canadian teams?” Monica wanted to know. Ryan responded. “There are the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Montreal Canadians and the Calgary Flames.” “Oh, look the game has resumed,” Erica noted as the five cousins turned their attention to the TV.

COVER STORY
Common Core
Conundrum ttering these three simple words can cause panic in parents and frustration in teachers and administrators: Common Core Curriculum. As parents and educators, it is best not to feed into the frenzy and instead have an educated discussion.
U
Learning standards designate what students should know and be able to do in each grade. Over the next few years, New York and more than 40 other states across the country will transition to a new set of learning standards called the Common Core. These new standards offer a clear picture of what students need to learn each year in order to graduate from high school ready to succeed in college and careers. Keep in mind that the federal standards provide a framework that sets benchmarks for what each student should know at each grade level. That, I believe, is a positive thing. It may seem confusing but keep in mind that the Common Core is only a vehicle for instruction. True, the way students are taught is changing considerably. However, I remember in the 1960’s hearing my parents and their peers complaining about “the New Math,” and fretting over how to help their children. Over the years, new methods have always alarmed parents. Changes are sometimes not easy to accept. Especially if you have a few kids and it seems that just as you get the hang of one program, a new one is on the way. Many years ago, I recall a veteran teacher making a comment about a “gifted and talented class.” She said, “In my day, this class would have been called a regular class, now they are geniuses!” Although she may have exaggerated the discrepancies in abilities, it made me wonder if changes needed to be made. Over the years many parents, teachers, and administrators were in agreement.
Some examples of what your child will be expected to do with the implementation of Common Core Curriculum are: • Read more non-fiction and develop a bigger vocabulary through English language lessons.
• In math, students will be expected to focus on fewer topics and spend time practicing and memorizing math facts. This will lay a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. Taken together, these elements support a student’s ability to learn and apply more demanding math concepts and procedures. The middle school and high school standards call on students to practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to real world issues and challenges; they prepare students to think and reason mathematically. • There will be more emphasis on critical thinking and analysis, and students will be required to support their ideas and arguments with text-based evidence in their writing. • They will be required to use technology effectively. As any college student majoring in Education will tell you, these are the practices and ideals teachers have been striving for generations. Is there anything wrong with wanting students to strive for rigorous standards that will prepare them for college and careers by the time they graduate high school? I doubt many parents would say they do not want those skills for their child. That said, how do we help our children and what about the testing mania? First, the testing mania is not new. In public schools specifically, a tremendous emphasis has been put on testing for decades. What has become appalling is that teachers are forced to spend too much time “teaching to the test” or engaging in considerable test prep and overtesting during the school year. It has been argued that the tougher standardized testing requirements do not meet the individualized needs of students and leave many students – especially those with special needs – in the dust. It is imperative to remember that each child is unique and the cookie cutter-like approach to test taking can be daunting. The Core Curriculum is designed to be built over time. In a perfect world, it would be implemented in kindergarten and then phased in year by year. When it is not, it causes the problem of upper grade students falling behind because those prerequisite skills may not have been taught. Fortunately, good
teachers hunt for the proper materials and compensate for these lapses. Parents, in turn, are expected to do their part as well.
What Can Parents Do to Help? • Continue to be supportive of your child and the teachers who are working very hard. Never assume a student is entitled to high marks if he has not worked hard to gain them. Do not assume that a 95 in Math guarantees a 95 in Reading. • Use technology as a tool for learning. I have seen students leave on Friday unable to do multiplication and come in on Monday proficient. Instead of watching movies and playing video games, their parents made them (yes I said made them) sit in front of the computer or iPad and play multiplication and division games for hours! • Study your school’s website for ideas and suggestions. Many teachers and administrators take the time to provide valuable information and post it for your convenience. • At times, parents have voiced frustration when their child struggles with homework. Some complain they can't help their kids. When this happens, write a note to the teacher asking for help or clarification. Don’t be embarrassed to ask for examples or resources.
What You Should Know About Test Scores: • Lower test scores do not mean your child didn’t learn and make progress last year. Because the new tests are more challenging, students’ scores statewide are lower than in the past. • The new tests reflect the changes your children will face as they move from elementary school to middle school to high school and beyond. • The test scores do not give the full picture of your child as a student. Tests are only one component showing what students know and are able to do. The results give teachers a guide on how they can help students learn more. Teachers also look at classwork, participation, and homework as other ways to measure progress. In the upcoming year we could see the Common Core completely unravel or hopefully turn into a curriculum that works. No matter what happens, hold your standards high for education, work with your children, and strive for their best performance. As for the Core Curriculum, it was always my impression that we have had one from the beginning of public education. It was called Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. In the end, it all comes down to how good the teacher is and what kind of support children receive from their parents. HELPING CHILDREN MANAGE FRUSTRATION
rustration is inevitable for young children. can be accomplished successfully and built on. • Remember past successes: Remind your child of previous challenges that he has overcome and how it seemed he would never succeed - and then did. Remember that the goal is for the child to learn to recognize his own frustration and be able to deal with it on his own. Every time you help him quiet down and approach a problem calmly, he is learning a valuable lesson in patience and perseverance and is taking a step toward that goal. Coping with "No" • Stick to your guns: Empathize with the child's desire but stand firm. Giving in once will make the child's frustration worse next time. • Stay positive and calm: Don't let the child's heated emotions affect your own reaction. If you are in control of your emotions, it will be easier for the child to control hers. • Offer an alternative: A cookie after lunch, a favorite game after nap, an extra story at bedtime...something the child will want that you can say "yes" to. Helping a child deal with the frustration of "no" requires a strategy virtually opposite that of coping with the inability to accomplish a task. "This is a case in which allowing perseverance to achieve the child's desired result is not the best outcome," says Dr. Spencer. "The child must learn to accept 'no' and let go of the goal. But the lesson learned is similar: to be able to deal with the emotion on his own and understand that he can tolerate not always getting everything he wants." Every time you help your child cope with frustration, she is gaining experience in recognizing and understanding her feelings and learning an important skill. Dr. Spencer concludes: "Children who learn to successfully manage the frustration that is unavoidable in their young lives will develop confidence that they can deal with disappointment and will more easily cope with challenges and difficulties later on." Spencer, Ed.D., who provides psychotherapy with a cognitive behavioral approach and specializes in neuropsychological assessment of children, adolescents and adults following brain injuries and in connection with attention and learning differences. • www.morrispsych.com

DEAR TEACHER by Peggy Gisler & Marge Eberts
Celebrate Earth Day and Screen Free Day this Month Parents: April is a busy month, with most schools observing two special events -- Earth Day and Screen-Free Week. You can make them more meaningful by tying them to family activities.
Solid Advice on Improving Children’s Basic Skills and Addressing Parental Concerns
Earth Day is always celebrated on April 22. This year it will be on Tuesday -- a day your children may be on spring break. Why don't you have your family join the more than 1 billion people celebrating this day by improving the environment in some way? Join one of the many Earth Day events in your community. You could be part of a group working to improve city, state or national parks. Other groups clean up streams, plant gardens at schools and pick up street trash. Here are some other ideas of things that your family could do on Earth Day as well as other days throughout the year to green our environment. Whatever you elect to do will be hands-on learning about the environment for your children. 1. Recycling is always a good place to begin. Commit your family to separating recyclables from your trash every week. 2. Plant a tree for every member of your family. They will remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

3. Start turning lights out when you leave a room. Unplug appliances when they are not in use. When you use less electricity, less oil and gas are being used to create electricity.
Ages 3-15 • July 7-17 See Our website for schedule Jamz5b ballet Barre Classes!
4. Build a compost pile. Find a section of your yard in a back corner and start putting all the leaves and grass cuttings from your yard in this pile. It will decompose, then you will be able to put it in the soil for other plants in your yard.
Come try our premier barre workout classes! Look like a dancer without the years of training.
5. Make bird feeders. This can be done by collecting pine cones and dipping them in peanut butter or honey and covering them with birdseed.
Mondays 8:30pm & Thursdays 8:15pm.
Your family should also think about observing Screen-Free Week, from April 28-May 4. It is hard to believe that preschoolers average 32 hours a week of screen time from computers, TV and other electronic devices. The time is even greater for older children. Screen media dominates too much of our children's lives, even if they are watching good programming. Use this week to examine your family's relationship with entertainment media and to rediscover the joys of screen-free living.

Introducing Your Children to Music Question: I love music and want to share it with my young children. What are the benefits of doing this? And how should I introduce them to music? — Music Lover Answer: All parents should definitely be taking the time to enjoy music with their young children, as it is very beneficial to their literacy development. Plus, it is a great way for them to acquire new vocabulary and learn rhyming words. Through music, children are also building their listening and memory skills. Start singing to them when they are infants, and always smile while you are doing it. Don't worry if you don't have a good voice, just lip-synch to songs. As the children get older, have sing-a-long tapes in the car for fun while you are driving. Fit music into your children's daily routine. Make up a pick-up song to sing as your child is picking up his or her toys with you. Have bedtime and bath time songs, too. As your child gets older, get instruments that he or she can shake or bang along with the music. The more senses that your children use with music, the more they will learn about it. Besides, you will be having fun together.
Ways to Teach Social Skills to Young Children Question: I know having good social skills is important in many situations, including school. What social skills should I be teaching my young children? -- For Socializing Answer: Both having and not having social skills can influence how well children do academically in school. You want your young children to be acquainted with sharing, waiting their turn, asking to use things, respecting other people, not interrupting, and managing both anger and frustration before they start school. Of course, they won't learn all these skills at once. As they continue through the elementary school years, you will need to continue helping them acquire these behaviors.

You can and should reinforce good behavior by acknowledging your children’s behavior whenever they exhibit good social skills. Don't overlook bad behavior in young children, saying they will grow out of it -- this may not happen. The sooner younger children learn how to behave appropriately, the fewer problems they will have in school. What you do can help your children acquire social skills. You can show that these skills are part of the way you behave. If they see you waiting patiently in line, not losing your temper to rude drivers, taking turns and not interrupting when you talk to others, they will be learning social skills. And it's absolutely necessary that you treat your children with respect by making polite requests, listening to them without interrupting and avoiding any violence in your home.

ASK THE DOCTOR Teresa Lemma, M.D., Acting Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program at Richmond University Medical Center
AUTISM & SENSORY PROCESSING Autism, which is broadly described as a neurological development disorder, can come in many forms and diagnoses. But for many children diagnosed as “on the spectrum,” it can bring extreme sensory processing issues. As April is Autism Awareness month, I share some important information on the connection between autism and sensory processing disorder. Children with autism have different symptoms, triggers, and abilities that can vary significantly. Something I often come across in patients with autism is sensory processing disorder. We all know the five human senses - touch, hear, sight, taste, and smell. Children who experience extreme reactions to these senses have difficulty filtering sensory input. Their nervous systems don’t know what to block or tune out. Equally, they may not know what to amplify. It’s a response that can lead to difficult behaviors or reactions that are often misunderstood, especially in children that have difficulty communicating. Examples that come to mind include sensitivity to certain clothing or materials, a specific texture of food, or a crowded open-play gym. But it also includes a hypoactive response, where the child craves a situation or activity that provides them with a sensation they enjoy. This can often develop into repetitive behaviors, commonly described in the autism community as stimming. It’s a stereotypic behavior, like handflapping, rocking, or repeating a pattern of noises or movements. The behaviors may be harmless, but can sometimes become disruptive and interfere with learning or social situations. Some sensory issues are manageable and can be found in children with or without autism. You cut the tags out of your son’s shirts, or sneak some blended veggies into his mac ‘n cheese. Others, like excessive repetitive behaviors are difficult and require sensory integration through Occupational Therapy or ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)-based programs. This may teach alternatives that meet their sensory needs, redirect attention/focus, or even build tolerance to an unpleasant sensation.

Some methods can be controversial as they may not have been adequately studied and tested. Some OTs (occupational therapists) may suggest methods for treatment, like weighted vests or brushing, which is thought to desensitize response for some sensory issues. However, this is widely disagreed upon. While sometimes disregarded by the medical community, every parent should research and make their own decisions about what can help their child. Doctors may suggest a medication for some cases. A child with autism that engages in behavior that disrupts their ability to focus may benefit from a prescription that can help them focus. Often that child has other symptoms in addition to the sensory processing disorder, and the anticipated benefits are strong. Most doctors, OTs, and schools will respect a parent’s choice of therapy/treatment, and offer information that can help with the decision-making. While in New York City, children with autism are eligible for related services, like OT, many parents want to do more at home to improve sensory issues. Incremental exposure on an ongoing basis can help desensitize. For a child that has sensitivity to textures and touch, try to make a sensory bin. Fill a container with things around your home that can produce a good or bad sensory response. Allow them to run their hands through regularly and encourage them to touch all the items. Things like a silk scarf, sandpaper, and uncooked pasta are examples of household items that can generate a sensory stimulation – it could become a great way to offer sensory satisfaction, tolerance of textures, and distraction of repetitive behaviors! Dr. Teresa Lemma is a Pediatrician with a private practice in New Dorp, Pediatric Healthcare. She is the Acting Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program at Richmond University Medical Center.

Sebamed Skincare Products SRP $11.99-$12.99 • www.sebamedusa.com Sebamed’s new line of baby products is dermatologist-developed and helps with common baby problems, including diaper rash, acne, beach bums, and irritated skin.
Problem: Diaper Rash – For a dermatologist, no day passes without a visit about diaper rash, largely due to diaper rash’s multiple causes: fungi or bacteria, frequent pooping, and dietary changes in the baby or breastfeeding mother are the most common culprits. Solution: No matter the cause, the first step toward healing diaper rash is to switch out alcohol or soap-soaked baby wipes for pH balancing wipes or warm cloth. Balancing baby’s pH to the ideal 5.5 will optimize their skin barrier, strengthening their natural ability to fight bacteria and irritation. Problem: Baby Acne – Maternal hormones transferred via placenta before delivery can increase oil production, sometimes causing baby acne around the 1-month mark. Solution: At the 1-month mark, fragrance-free hypoallergenic products can be introduced into baby’s routine to gently cleanse acneic skin during bath time. Problem: Beach Bums – While baby plays at the beach, sandbox, or backyard, dirt and sand can creep into the diaper lining, risking infection to baby’s private parts and creating a mess for parents. Solution: Apply a rich barrier cream along the diaper line before heading outside. This will create an added seal to help catch sand or dirt, and will make cleanup easier after. Problem: Delicate, red or easily irritated skin – Babies go from a fluid-filled environment to a dry one, so allow skin to adjust on its own for the first month, then introduce hypoallergenic and fragrance free solutions. While fragrances make skin smell good, baby’s skin is usually too sensitive for them, and they can cause rash or increased nasal congestion. Natural products are not always better options as baby’s skin can still react to those ingredients. Solution: Without a doubt, avoid formulas with parabens, phthalates and fragrance. Parabens function as preservatives in lotions and shampoos, etc., but are under fire for their connection to breast cancer. Phthalates are often found in detergents and toys, and may affect hormone levels.

Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.
Warm Air, Excited Hearts Thank God it's April. This winter was a lot of fun -- we're snow lovers in our family -- but we all we’re long overdue for some real Spring weather. The last of the ice and snow mounds have recently melted and I'm hoping the warmer air and sunshine will dry up our yard, which has been a field of puddles for way too long.

APRIL 2014

My first journey to Girl Scout Camp is this month also, so I'm hoping we have great weather for that. We will be staying in cabins, cooking our own food, and in charge of cleaning up after ourselves. (Not so excited about that part, ha ha!) Better yet, our troop is going to do zip-lining and archery, among some other really neat outdoors activities, so I'm excited. Just being out in the fresh air, enjoying nature, is something I'm really looking forward to. Of course, there's no one more eager to get out and about than our dog Carly. She misses playing at the dog run in Wolfe's Pond Park, and exploring the neighborhood with my sister and me leading the way on our bikes and scooters. Although I was hoping this would be "the" spring Mom would let me ride past our corner alone, it's not, so I'll have to figure out how to deal with it (again) and stay within eye distance (that's the official rule). It gets frustrating sometimes. Especially after a long, hard winter, we just want to break free (like Carly!) and pedal away. Unfortunately, "the world isn't how it used to be," as Mom always says. She made me really jealous one day when she recalled how she and her friends would go bike riding around the neighborhood for hours on end before coming back to their houses right before dinner. Alone!
My parents say that the rules will change a bit as I continue to get older, but they will always do everything in their power to protect and keep us safe. For some reason, I tend to think that means we'll forever be corralled in the backyard, but at least we have a pool! On that note, I'm hoping what people have been saying about the weather probably going "straight to summer" is true. Our registrations have been sent in for summer camp, vacation plans have been made, and I'm more than ready for school to be over. Thinking ahead, though... this will be the first summer I won't be going to Pennsylvania for a few days to stay at my Grandma and Pop-Pop's, since he's in heaven now. It makes me sad, but I am going to try to focus on the fact that my Grandma now lives nearby us on Staten Island and we can sleep over her place anytime. And I can always chat with Pop-Pop in my heart. We talk about him every single day, something that's sure to increase as the weather heats up. He was an outdoorsy guy, which is why so much of what we do in the spring and summer time -- our annual cousins' Easter egg hunt at my great-aunt's house, walking along the boardwalk, and just playing outside catching lightening bugs -will remind us of him. No matter what, though, the warm air and all it brings will definitely make us smile. It's no wonder why I can't wait! Happy Spring to you and your family. May you enjoy all that warms up your heart, too!

SPEECH PATHOLOGY
FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
