Light It Up Blue!
Will you shine a light on autism Awareness? Sunday, April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. In honor of the day, the group Autism Speaks encourages the world to “Light It Up Blue” to spread awareness. The initiative is supported globally, with such iconic landmarks as the Empire State Building, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Sydney Opera House glowing blue in past years. You can show your own support by wearing blue clothes or accessories, switching your outdoor lights to blue bulbs, or sharing your “LIUB” pictures on social media using the hashtag #LIUB. Go to siparent.com to learn more ways to go blue on April 2 and to learn how you can make a donation to Autism Speaks.
St. George Day 2017
What do dragons and Earth Day have in common? They’re the stars of the show at the annual St. George Day celebration on Staten Island’s North Shore. The popular community festival will take place Saturday, April 22 from 11am to 5pm in and around Tompkinsville Park. The free event will include kids’ activities, family oriented fun, outdoor art installations, live music, street performance, crafts, and Earth Day demonstrations. Several of St. George Day’s signature offerings,
8 new CSN 2.indd 3
including Earth Day Zone, Art Around the Park, the Festival Dragon Parade, and the giant 35-foot puppet spectacle, “St. George & the Friendly Dragon,” will again be presented. The Dragon Parade kicks off at 2pm. Organizers are also seeking volunteers to help out on the day of the event. High School students will receive community service credit for their participation. Go to siparent.com for further details on this exciting Staten Island tradition.
P.S. 50’s Budding Artists
Borough President Oddo recently welcomed several talented 4th grade students from P.S. 50 to Borough Hall to view their own beautiful artwork on display. The students had been asked to use specific perspective techniques and color grouping to play with depth
perception, and were inspired by artists Wayne Thiebaud, John Sloan and Georgia O’Keefe. Members of the BP’s design team spoke to the youngsters about real world applications of art and how their office uses graphic design to convey messages to the public. “You are the future of art, and I hope you continue down this path,” BP Oddo told them. The artwork will be displayed in room 125 through April.
P.S. 30: A Place to Grow
Earth Day may be approaching, but the students of P.S. 30 are eco-conscious all year round. Staten Island Parent columnist and Community Education Council President Michael Reilly recently met with the Westerleigh school’s Green Team coordinator, Mrs. Mitchell, to discuss the program.

stuff you need / community and school news The Green Team is a student driven program to help make a positive impact in the community by choosing environmentally friendly habits. The Team’s main responsibility is to collect and sort bottles for recycling, with students working in shifts and logging their hours. The school then deposits the money earned from recycling into an account and the Team holds discussions and votes on how to use the funds for the school. New plants, trees and other items to spruce up the school building are some of the items the Team has purchased. On Fridays the students are “paid” in the form of sweet treats from Assistant Principal Mr. Napolitano. The Green Team has partnered with several city agencies and organizations that align with their mission. One organization is NYC GROW, which provided a grant to purchase a Greenhouse in Mrs. Mitchell’s science room. “It was great listening to the students explain their efforts with such pride,” Reilly said. “The program allows the students to demonstrate cross learning, applying organizational skills, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The Green Team is a wonderful program and definitely makes P.S. 30 ‘A Place To Grow.’”
Running for Life
On Sunday, March 19, more than 20,000 runners from around the world participated in the United Airlines NYC Half, the signature half-marathon of the New York Road Runners (NYRR). Runners race for a myriad of reasons, and this year many ran the 13.1 miles to overcome and advocate for major health issues and in honor of loved ones. That includes a few Staten Islanders. Five sisters ran together to fight for a cure to heal their 14-year-old nephew, John Hudson, from a rare and painful degenerative skin condition. Team Sista Act become more than a running team, but a support system for oldest sibling and mother of John Hudson, Faye Dilgen. Her sisters have rallied over the course of John Hudson’s life to provide childcare that encompasses many of his special needs. Faye, a runner herself, admits that her hobby can sometimes make her feel selfish, but she reminds herself daily that sometimes, “you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can put on your child’s.”

Kristin DeClara, 29, who is living with Crohn’s disease, ran for the first time a year after losing her father to a stroke. Troubled by the ability of the disease to disrupt her daily routine, she found that exercise eased her struggle throughout the years. Running also helped her grieve the loss of her father last year. DeClara says that being out on the race course “grants her the normalcy life wasn’t kind enough to offer.” She is simply a fellow runner and isn’t defined by the effects of her disease or the unexpected nature of life.
Well-Deserved Discounts for Vets
Many businesses offer discounts to veterans as a symbol of gratitude for their heroic service. If you are a local business owner offering such a discount, the Borough President’s office is asking that you alert them to the offer so that they may expand their current list of local businesses offering veteran discounts. You can email the details to Allison Cohen at ACohen@StatenIslandUSA.com or call (718) 816-2136. If you are a veteran, you can find the list at statenislandusa.com/veterandiscounts or link directly to the page at siparent.com. We thank you for your service!
High Rock Park Challenge
The 2017 High Rock Challenge Adventure Race will take place on Saturday, April 29. Held in memory of NYPD Officer John Kelly, two-member teams must run together at all times and compete in mystery events located throughout the approximately 10k course along Staten Island’s Greenbelt trail system. This year, free training sessions will be offered Saturdays in April at 10:30am. No RSVP is needed-- just show up on time at Henry Kaufmann Campground (1131 Manor Rd.). Proceeds from the High Rock Challenge support the Greenbelt Conservancy. You can link to the registration form at siparent.com. If you are interested in volunteering to assist with handing out refreshments and directing the runners, call 718-667-2165 ext. 311 or email volunteer@sigreenbelt.org.
Less Waste Challenge
Broken toys piling up around the house? Here’s a feel-good way to get rid of them. During April, Tom’s of Maine will be working with TerraCycle on a new toy recycling program, the #LessWasteChallenge. It’s the perfect way to keep toys out of landfills while freeing up space in your home. Participants simply sign up online for a free UPS shipping label, then fill an old box with up to ten pounds of broken toys and send it out via UPS. Go to siparent.com to link to the website and get started.

how to improve relationships Communication and a willingness to work together are keys to building strong relationships
Relationships can bring out the best in people, especially when couples share similar interests and goals. But even the most solid relationships can be put to the test by those bumps in the road that everyone faces from time to time. Just as men and women must work to build strong physiques in the gym, they also must put forth effort to strengthen their relationships. People who aspire to strengthen communication with their partners and improve conflict resolution can benefit from a number of strategies. · Don’t expect a mind reader. Do not wait for your partner to spell out how he or she is feeling, or you may never get to the root of a given issue. You must start the conversation before real change can begin. Find a time when you are both rested, well fed and not distracted by any other responsibilities. Allow your partner to express his or her feelings, and then explain your needs as well. ·

According to experts at The Family &
24 Relationships.indd 2
april 2017
www.siparent.com
3/22/17 1:16 PM
Marriage Counseling Directory®, criticizing is the adult version of crying. It’s a method of relieving stress and showing distress. But inflicting pain on others will not get them to bend to your wishes. · Keep outside interests a priority.
Your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend cannot provide for all of your needs. Expecting him or her to fill every role can lead to tension. Having outside friends, interests and a social network is a healthy idea. Just try to find a balance between that world and the world inside your home. · Spend quality time together. As relationships evolve and jobs, children and other influences are mixed in, it can be challenging to find the time to spend with each other and no one else. Make this a priority, as The HelpGuide.com team, a group of seasoned mental health professionals and writers, says time spent together is critical for your relationship. Without quality time your ability to communicate may begin to erode.

· Consider professional help. Seeking
the advice of a counselor, whether a licensed social worker or physiologist, is not a sign of weakness. It just means you are willing to do whatever you need to foster a strong relationship. A therapist may suggest strategies you never thought of, which can be useful for growing closer and/or resolving problems.

· Laugh whenever possible. Try to put a positive spin on anything. Jokes and laughter (not snarkiness) can diffuse tense situations. Look to laughter as a way to bond with your partner. · Focus on being caring. Do nice things
for your partner without requiring anything in return. Remember what your partner likes and begin doing those things again.

coping with colic
One of the most frustrating challenges new parents may face is colic, a confusing condition that can be extremely uncomfortable for both parents and their babies. What is colic? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, roughly 20 percent of all babies will develop colic, a condition in which children may cry inconsolably, scream, extend or pull up their legs, and pass gas. When a baby develops colic, the causes of which are unknown, his or her stomach may be enlarged or distended with gas. What are the symptoms of colic? Babies tend to be finicky, so those that are fussy are not necessarily dealing with colic. But when healthy babies who are well-fed experience the following symptoms, colic might be the culprit. · Predictable periods of fussiness: Babies who have fussy periods each day during similar time frames may be experiencing colic. The AAP notes that these periods of fussiness are particularly common among babies with colic between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight. · Intense or inconsolable crying: The Mayo Clinic says babies with colic may experience intense, high-pitched crying that sounds distressed. During these bouts of crying, babies’ faces may be flushed, and it may be nearly impossible for parents to console their babies. · Inexplicable crying: Babies tend to cry when they are hungry and when they have soiled themselves. But babies with colic will cry for no apparent reason. · Changes in posture: During a colic episode, babies’ legs may curl up and they may clench their fists. Abdominal muscles also may tighten during colic episodes. When does colic begin? Babies with colic will typically begin to exhibit symptoms within a few weeks of being born. While the condition is frustrating for parents and babies, colic often improves by three months of age. How to handle a baby with colic: The AAP recommends that parents who suspect their baby has colic first consult their pediatricians to confirm that the baby’s crying is not linked to a serious medical condition. Once something more serious has been ruled out, parents can discuss multiple topics with their pediatricians: · Nursing: Mothers who are nursing may try eliminating potentially irritating products, such as caffeine, onions and cabbage, from their diets. · Formula: The AAP suggests parents discuss protein hydrolysate formulas with their pediatricians if food sensitivity is causing the discomfort. · Pacifiers: Pacifiers may provide instant relief from colic to some babies, while others may refuse pacifiers outright.

make-ahead breakfast Unless you homeschool your kids, weekday mornings aren’t the time to fuss with pots and pans. For many parents, a quick bowl of cereal or toaster waffle is the easiest way to handle breakfast on school days -- but it’s not always the healthiest way. If you’re hoping to cut down on the sugar and bump up the nutrients in your kids’ breakfast, these simple and versatile make-ahead recipes are worth a try.
yogurt popsicles Ingredients
• 1 cup Greek yogurt • 1/2 cup milk • 2 teaspoon honey • 1/2 cup granola • 1 cup berries/chopped fruit
Directions:
sweet potato biscuits Ingredients
• 1 medium sweet potato • 1 1/2 cup flour, all-purpose • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 6 tablespoon butter, unsalted • 1/2 cup milk
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line baking sheet with parchment or a baking mat. 2. Poke fork into sweet potato and cook in microwave for 5 minutes, or until softened. Mash well or add to food processor, mixing until smooth. 3. In a medium mixing bowl combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Use a whisk to combine. 4. Add butter and then using a fork, pastry blender, or your fingers, work the butter into the flour mixture until it is the size of small peas. Refrigerate for 10 minutes. 5. Add sweet potato and 1/3 cup of milk to flour mixture and stir to combine. If mixture is crumbly and not sticking together add the rest of the milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. 6. Remove the dough onto a flour dusted surface and dust the top with a little more flour. Roll the dough so that it is 3/4 of an inch thick. Cut the dough using a knife or a biscuit butter into 9 pieces. 7. Place biscuits on the baking sheet and into the oven. Bake until the tops are a light golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Serve hot. no-bake quinoa crumble bars
1. Mix together milk, yogurt and 1 tsp of the honey. 2. Divide mixture between popsicle molds. 3. Place a few berries into each mould. 4. Mix the last teaspoon of honey with the granola (you can place the honey in the microwave for 10 seconds if you are struggling to mix it) and top the yogurt with a little granola mixture. 6. Place a wooden ice cream stick into each mould and place the popsicles into the freezer for at least 4 hours before consuming. Makes 6-8 popsicles. Recipe from IHeartNapTime.net
Ingredients
• 1 1/4 cups granola • 1 cup cooked quinoa cooled • 1 cup coarsely chopped raw almonds • 1/2 cup ground flaxseed • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1/3 cup honey • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil or peanut butter I have used both • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3/4 cup mini chocolate chips or dried pomegranate seeds or a mix
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, combine quinoa, granola, almonds, flaxseed and salt, stirring to mix well. Fold in chocolate chips and or pomegranate seeds. 2. Stir in honey, coconut butter and vanilla extract, mixing well with a spoon until combined. Place mixture in the microwave for 45 seconds. Allow to cool slightly and pour over dry ingredients mix until entire mixture is moistened. If it still seems too dry, add additional honey 1 tablespoon at a time, but you don’t want it to be too wet. 3. Line a 9x9 baking dish with plastic wrap or parchment paper. Firmly press the mixture into the pan, into all the corners and evenly top it off with a spoon. You want it packed as tightly as possible. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, then remove and lift granola bars out of pan, cutting into 12 squares. These work best refrigerated. Recipe from HalfBakedHarvest.com
egg muffins Ingredients
• 1 tablespoon olive oil • 6 oz mushrooms, thinly sliced • 6 eggs • ¼ cup milk • ¼ teaspoon salt • 2 cups grated cheddar cheese • 3/4 cup spinach, cooked and drained (about 8 oz)
Directions:
1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium-high, add mushrooms, sprinkle with salt, cook for 10 minutes until mushrooms soften and release juices. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Use a regular 12-cup muffin pan. Spray pan with non-stick cooking spray. 3. In a large bowl, beat eggs until smooth. Add milk, salt, Cheddar cheese and mix. Stir spinach, cooked mushrooms into the egg mixture. Ladle the egg mixture into greased muffin cups ¾ full. 4. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven, let cool for 30 minutes before removing muffins from pan. Recipe from JuliasAlbum.com

You see, I’m THAT mom. The one who thinks the worst, all the time. The one who worries, who panics, who overthinks and overreacts. I know, I know. We’re parents, we all do that. But when the going gets tough, I retreat back into my shell like a terrified turtle — frozen, shaking, crying, feeling sick to my stomach and envisioning every worst-case scenario on earth. Maybe this is you too. Maybe you’re a worrier, a crier, a freaker-outer like me. Maybe not by nature, but when it comes to your kids at least. Maybe you also often wonder how quickly your legs would turn to jello and your lunch would come back up if your world were to suddenly fall apart at the seams. If so, maybe now I can offer you some hope. I drove as fast as the gas pedal would allow, flying past red light after red light, one eye glued to the road and the other to my daughter strapped into her car seat behind me. Finally at the ER, we sat for a minute and waited for a nurse while my baby cried and clung to my shoulders, calling out for me in between her tiny gasps for air. I could feel my body trembling from the inside, felt the desperate sobs gathering at back of my throat and the tears welling forcefully under my eyelids. I felt myself breaking down.
you’re stronger than you think
This is the moment you are not prepared for as a parent, should you ever find yourself in this situation. This is something you will not learn to handle in a parenting class or a self-help book. This is that make-or-break moment when you are faced with a choice. You can choose to fall apart in this moment, let your anxiety win, let the terror wash over you and just lose your mind completely.
especially when your children need you “Mommy I’m scared. I can’t breathe.” You never want to hear your child say that to you. And when my four-year-old daughter recently said it to me one night around 2am when her cough went from 0-60 out of nowhere, I didn’t waste a second getting her to the emergency room. This isn’t the kind of thing where I pat myself on the back for getting my kid the medical attention she needed one scary night just in the nick of time. It’s a fairly basic requirement to keep your kid alive and I did what any normal parent would do in the situation. In fact, I spent the following seven hours pacing nervously around her hospital room, mentally berating myself for all the things I may have done wrong that, in my frazzled state, I thought landed her there in the first place.

You're Stronger Jeannine.indd 1
Or this is the moment you quickly realize there is no choice to be made, and that there never really was. And I promise you, you won’t fall apart. No, instead you will be hypnotized by the adrenaline. Your mommy autopilot will kick in. You’ll push that terror so far back inside that you may never see it again. You’ll put on the bravest face you can muster for your child and you WILL power through it. You got this, mama.
So in perhaps the strongest moment of my entire life, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and shook it all off. I held my little girl in my arms as tightly as I could and I swore to her that she was going to be absolutely, positively fine. Inwardly, I made the same promise to myself. If you’re the type who is normally good under pressure, this probably isn’t as big of a deal to you as it seems to me. But in that moment, I will never forget the way I looked fear dead in the face and told it to buzz off. For just a little while, for my sweet, scared baby girl, I was her superhero. I didn’t recognize myself, overcome by this sudden strength I never knew I was capable of. I’m grateful for it, and I sleep a little better now knowing I had that cape all along, tucked away and waiting for the day I’d need to put it on. I really hope I never need it again, but if I do at least I know it’s there. By Jeannine Cintron, a Staten Island mom of two who is overcoming her anxiety one emergency at a time. Staten Island Homeowner Young Couples Prioritize and Plan When It Comes to Buying Their First Home When it comes to purchasing their first homes, young couples say affordable mortgage loans, prime neighborhoods, stellar school districts, and convenient commuting options are at the top of their wish lists – not to mention maintaining strict budgets – in an effort to make their dreams of becoming homeowners on Staten Island a reality.

ith the cost of living on the rise and many families struggling to make ends meet, young couples say the first step to buying a new home is to prioritize and strategize – saving money and making lifestyle changes – years before actually starting the search for their dream home. When Meramonnie and Joseph Mongelli began saving for their current home, affordability was their top priority. Secondarily, they wanted to find a single-family home on a cul de sac in a convenient family-friendly neighborhood with parks and playgrounds in walking distance, as well as top-notch schools and good public transportation options. They budgeted like other families – and made every penny count, according to Ms. Mongelli, 30 who has recently launched her own event planning business with her sister in law. The couple saved without help from family members – and even postponed plans for a formal wedding and reception.

“We were really frugal and cut where we could,” Ms. Mongelli, who is also a big advocate of DIY projects said. “If we were $50 over budget, we didn’t do it.” Little did they know that their goal of affording their own first home would become an even more challenging milestone when they learned they were expecting the birth of their first child in the same year. They scaled back on, or avoided, many luxuries they previously enjoyed, such as going out to dinner, vacations, and holiday gift-giving, and Mr. Mongelli, 31, a supervisor for Con Ed, brought his own breakfast and lunch to work. “We shopped around for sales on groceries, and when it came to the baby, I nursed so that cut food costs,” Mrs. Mongelli explained. She even made her own baby food and juices to offset the additional expenses that come with owning a new home, such as increased utility bills. When they moved into their new two-story home in Southeast Annadale last year from their small Brooklyn apartment, they knew all their sacrifices had paid off.
Meanwhile, Melissa and Daniel Hurtado also reaped the benefits of maintaining a disciplined savings routine – owning a semi-attached home with a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage in Port Richmond that has all three of Mrs. Hurtado’s wish list items – three bedrooms, and a basement and backyard. Depositing their income tax return for four consecutive years and sacrificing big family vacations and other activities, the couple was able to afford a home in Staten Island after their hopes of purchasing a home in New Jersey were crushed by the reality of exorbitant property taxes. They searched for a year and were hoping to find a home through a short sale or a foreclosure as a way to avoid the $600,000 to $700,000 price tag of the average three-bedroom homes they were seeing on Staten Island. “We did the math, and with all the bills and our social life, we decided we would lower our price range to the upper $300s,” said Mrs. Hurtado, 37, a retail store supervisor. Her husband, Daniel, 32, is a machine operator. As they were eagerly awaiting the closing in February, she said the couple had been living in her mom’s two-family home in Bulls Head and paying rent as they continued to build a nest egg for their growing family, which includes three sons ranging in age from 5 to 14. Couples like the Hurtado’s said Staten Island was the most affordable – both in terms

of the cost of the homes and the property taxes. “We decided to buy on Staten Island because it’s the cheapest of all the boroughs that we could afford,” Ms. Mongelli agreed. She said they attempted to buy a home four years earlier, but didn’t have enough resources to make a full commitment.
for their now 15-month-old daughter, and wanted a neighborhood that would hold or increase in value with the changing real estate market. She suggested first-time buyers research schools before submitting a down payment on a home. “Just don’t think about elementary school – think about at least up to junior high school,” she said.
and were able to secure an attractive interest rate and a long-term real estate investment, although the high cost of a new roof wasn’t in their budget and almost cost her the home. However, after some negotiation, the seller lowered the price to cover the roof replacement and seal the deal.
Mrs. Hurtado said patience and will power are two traits that helped them land their home. “We were getting so disgusted because we just Mrs. Hurtado said the quality of schools wanted a home and we just wanted to give up in her new neighborhood was important, since because we couldn’t afford what I wanted,” she explained. She They researched “They stuck to a tight budget and decided to shop for a home admitted finding mortgage brokers, but the right home below the amount they were pre-approved for – not at the top of Ms. Mongelli said they was a challenge, their budget – so they could stay within their means.” ultimately settled on a but said recommendation from sacrificing and a friend. This time, she said they stuck to a tight budget and decided to shop for a home below the amount they were pre-approved for – not at the top of their budget – so they could stay within their means.
Licensed real estate agent Dawn Eugenio of DiTommaso Real Estate in New Dorp said young couples share similar priorities and can become stressed when the market doesn’t cooperate. “Most young first-time home buyers are looking for three-bedroom, two-bath homes with a nice size yard for a possible growing family, and always a good location with a good school district,” she said.
Besides good schools, couples also look for homes in walking distance to public transportation, according to Mrs. Eugenio. “A lot of buyers work off the island,” she noted.
Mrs. Mongelli said they researched a neighborhood that would offer quality schools

“Today’s market is very competitive,” Mrs. Eugenio added. “We are still at decent mortgage rates, but inventory on the island is very limited, which makes it very frustrating for anxious first-time buyers.”
Mrs. Mongelli, meanwhile, said she and Mr. Mongelli felt their strict budget, self-discipline, and well thought out planning process helped them find their desired home and achieve their top priorities, minimizing their anxiety and pressure in a challenging market. “Timing is everything,” Mrs. Mongelli said. “You have to plan and have to do your homework.” By Christine Albano, a Staten Island-based writer and mother of three who has owned her own home for 20 years.

earth month
April is Earth month and a perfect opportunity to discuss the little things that we can do to make a positive impact on our community and the environment. There are several resources available for school communities to help support positive environmental lessons and practices. GrowNYC is just one organization that helps school communities reach that goal, motivating thousands of New York City students to participate in 27 environmental improvement projects in their Environmental Education program. Their Renewable Energy initiative helps students learn about energy sources, using their classrooms and homes as real-life examples of how to conserve energy. This program employed a fun development component where 400 students built and tested their own working pizza box solar ovens to demonstrate the power of the sun.
The free programs offered are geared towards different age groups. Children will learn about the ecology of the hiking areas and have an opportunity to expand their knowledge of birds. what does that mean? how to translate texts
Most parents know that LOL means Laughing Out Loud. You may even know that 420 refers to marijuana. But you may not know that 53X means sex. That worries Brian Bason, CEO at Bark, a new monitoring app. Their website includes a list of popular texting slang terms (tinyurl.com/gqp9tex). For $9.99 a month, they promise to alert parents when kids text something risky. Of course, slang is nothing new. Parents have been scrambling to keep up with it for generations. Using freshly minted words that adults won’t understand appeals to kids for two reasons. First, it helps kids establish and reinforce a social identity. People who understand the same secret language are likely to be part of the same tribe. Slang establishes an in group that understands and out group that seems hopelessly out of touch. Second, slang allows kids to fly under adult radar, talking about things that might be forbidden if the adults could translate what they were saying. Siblings often develop this kind of secret language—winks and whispers and even special words that let them communicate about things that Mom and Dad might not appreciate. Messaging, of course, has added a new dimension to all of this. Keyboards are tiny. Attention spans are short. Acronyms and emojis make it possible to crowd a lot of information into a small space. As a result, messages have become more and more cryptic and harder for parents to decipher.
Still, parents need to be alert. Kids can get into trouble with texting, and the kinds of speech that would be unacceptable IRL should also be off limits in text. In particular, parents will want to monitor in these areas:

Hate. Texting and social media are often used to bully and abuse other people because of their gender, race, ethnic origin or disabilities. Be clear with your child. A slur is a slur, and you won’t tolerate abusive language in any setting. Bad Language. If you don’t want your child to say the F word, you will probably want to discourage the use of acronyms like WTF or AF. Even NSS may not be acceptable.
The best way to know what an acronym means is to ask the child who used it. The security company, McAfee, also produces a list of common terms, conveniently subdivided into categories for drugs, sex, and bullying (tinyurl.com/hpb8qu2). Wiktionary also has a long list of acronyms in an Appendix (tinyurl.com/mab7snn). Another way to educate yourself is to visit databases that try to keep up with slang as it’s created. Here are several of the most complete collections:
Most texts are, of course, nothing more than chit-chat. Still, parents need to supervise because texting does allow kids to get into trouble.
Much of the new slang being used online is harmless and even creative. Some of the better acronyms enter the language. Pretty much everyone knows about FOMO (Fear of Missing Out), IRL (In Real Life) and BRB (Be Right Back). Other very useful acronyms include JSYK (Just So You Know), SMH (Shaking My Head), TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read) and YOLO (You Only Live Once).
Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing Growing Up Online for fifteen years. a way to use cannibas. Lit can mean getting high or simply having a good time.
Sex. Most teens seem to have gotten the message that sending nude photos isn’t a good idea. That doesn’t mean teens aren’t texting about 53X. Even emojis may have a double meaning – an eggplant or a peach can stand for body parts. It’s perfectly natural, of course, for young people to take an interest in sex, but parents need to chaperone, watching for behavior that is too adult or partners who may be predatory. Substances. Slang has always been part of drug and
alcohol culture. Using coded language is a way to evade legal authorities as well as parents. Keeping up with the current terminology isn’t easy, especially since it often varies from place to place. Talk to other parents and even school counselors who often know the latest lingo. And remember that drug terms sometimes have more than one meaning. Dabbing, for example, is both a dance craze and
• Slang it.com is family friendly website (they also have free apps for IPhone and Android). When you enter a slang term, you get a clean and accurate definition. They also have a daily quiz question that might be a conversation starter at the dinner table.
• Noslang.com has been keeping track of net slang since 2005. They offer a text slang translator and a reverse translator that turns English phrases into acronyms. In their articles section, there’s a helpful essay called “What Every Parent Should Know.” • Internet slang.com also allows parents to look up acronyms. Their Trending Terms section helps parents zero in current terminology. • Acronymsandslang.com has an enormous list of acronyms, organized into categories. With over 20,000 entries in the Internet category, they are likely to supply an explanation for almost any acronym. • The Urban Dictionary also has a very complete list of slang of all kinds. The definitions are crowd-sourced so they are generally irreverent and often obscene. The site is not suitable for children, but may be useful to parents because it’s regularly up-dated by its users. Of course, trying to keep up with adolescent slang is like playing Whack-a-mole. As soon as a term is widely understood by adults, it loses its value for kids and they will move on. That’s why parents have to reinforce that idea that kids shouldn’t say anything online that they would say IRL (in real life). With that in mind, you might also want to introduce a conscience-stimulating acronym of your own – WWGmaS (What Would Grandma Say?)

Answer: Wow! This certainly is a topic with a lot of room for disagreement. Believe it or not, recent research tends to show that helping children with homework typically does not improve their standardized test scores. In fact, once children enter middle school, the data published in “The Broken Compass: Parental Involvement With Children’s Education” shows that parental help with homework can actually bring test scores down. Parenting columnist John Rosemond, who has spent years researching homework issues, points out that the more responsible the parent is for children’s homework, the less responsible the child. He feels that helping children with homework leads to some acquiring a helplessness syndrome. Thus the more parents help, the more incompetent the child begins to feel, and the more helpless (and in need of help) the child begins to act. There is another ugly problem that can occur when parents offer homework help. The parent simply may not know how a subject, especially math, is being taught. In fact, researchers are currently studying the positive effects that music may have on the brains of young children. What is now known is that learning the lyrics to music does increase the vocabulary of young children. Be sure to explain the meaning of the words they do not understand. Retaining the words to songs also helps them develop valuable memory skills -- just as learning nursery rhymes does. So keep on singing together as a family.

tackling youth football’s image problem
Is there a future for youth football? The folks heading up the three youth tackle football leagues on Staten Island certainly think so. Concerns about injuries — specifically, the much-publicized, long-term effects of concussions — combined with competition from other sports as well as a shrinking pool of children seeking out organized sports have caused some programs to struggle. “Tackle football seems to have a little target on its back,” said Steve Martinelli, the football commissioner for the Staten Island Lions’ Pop Warner program. “Unjustifiably so, in my opinion.” Rich Doyle, who has been on the board of directors for the Staten Island Boys Football League, agrees.
and Thursday nights from 5:30 to 8:00 at the league’s nine-acre complex in Travis, at the corner of Travis and South avenues. You can also register through the league’s website at www.sibfl.com. Doyle said that the league has responded to safety concerns with better equipment, improved training and more medical advice. “We continually replace the helmets, for instance,” Doyle said. “And at the first sign that a player seems to have any injury, they are taken out of the game or practice immediately.” What hasn’t changed, he added, are the standards set on by the league’s founders in 1959. “The Borg family and the people who formed the league set great standards,” he said.
The Staten Island Pee Wee Football League is also running a spring season for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, and registration is open for the fall season for those ages 5 to 13. All practices and games are played mostly at Miller Field in New Dorp and the Berry Houses field in Dongan Hills. “In my 26 years in the league, I have never seen a kid hospitalized with a concussion,” said Doyle, who has done a couple of tours as league president. “I’ve rarely seen anything more serious than a hairline fracture.” Yes, kids can suffer injuries playing tackle football, or any sport. teamwork, gamesmanship, and the benefits of tenacity.
All three leagues are currently offering a spring program, and are holding registration for their fall seasons. The Lions register boys aged 6 to 14, entering one team in each division of the Central Jersey Pop Warner League in the fall. Many of the Lions’ players also play during a spring season, when leagues form all-star teams that compete throughout the state. Joe LoVerde has been coaching youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s also a longtime newspaper editor and sportswriter.

Martinelli said interested parents should come out for the August workouts to see if the program is for their children. A winter clinic at New Dorp High School sponsored by the Lions drew many of their own players plus 50 children who came to see what it’s all about. For more information on the Lions, go to www.statenislandfootball.com. Staten Island Boys’ spring season, for 14-year-olds who are preparing to try out for high school teams, starts this month. Meanwhile, registration for kids ages 7 to 14 for the fall season is held every Tuesday
“We keep our teams small so that every boy plays,” Pearson said. “With 18-19 boys on a team, you have kids playing both offense and defense. I have seen a lot of players who maybe weren’t the best when they were younger later blossom and go on to become high school all stars because they got a chance to play a lot.” Parents looking to register for this league, which has been in existence for more than 50 years, can do so in person at the Staten Island Little League clubhouse on Seaver Avenue off Hylan Boulevard every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. You can also register through the league’s website, www.sipwfl.org. “Football is not for everybody, but I believe tackle football is the greatest,” the Lions’ Martinelli said. “You need to consider the intrinsic rewards that come with playing tackle football. At least give it a try. I believe when you experience it, you and your child will be hooked.”

The world is a challenging place for teenagers these days and taking that developmental journey from childhood to young adulthood is more stressful than ever. With the proliferation of social media, expectations for our teens to be popular have gone up. The risks of hurt from insults and exclusion, and the fatigue from never being away from one’s online peer group can lead to all kinds of psychological and emotional problems—all of these factors, not surprisingly, are resulting in a rise of depression with our teenaged girls and boys. Teens who are stressed academically or socially and feel like they can’t succeed are the most likely to become depressed. Teens of all temperaments can experience depression, but kids who are shy, sensitive, and not highly social skilled are the most vulnerable. Signs of depression can include withdrawal from the family, substance abuse, self-cutting, chronic fatigue, social withdrawal, a drop in school performance, ending participation in previously enjoyed activities, eating disorders (including extreme dieting and compulsive eating) - these are all signs to look for. Essentially, depression can be characterized as feeling “out of it, as though the desire and energy to participate in life’s positive activities

are gone. Nothing seems attractive or exciting and withdrawal from activities or engaging in self-destructive activities replaces healthy engagement. Low self-esteem can result from depression or be a contributing factor. When parents suspect that their teen is depressed, or is showing any of the above signs, they need to take action and seek professional help. But it can’t stop there. We have to remember that our kids are in that developmental stage of life where they are learning skills for their eventual independence from us, their parents. So parents need to help them learn the life skills for managing their feelings and making healthy, self-valuing choices. Getting the right kind of counseling is essential. Too often, counselors will work only with the teenager and include only minimal or separate counseling for the parents. The result of this approach is that parents feel disempowered and wait for the therapy to “work” rather than provide the more hands on, active support their teenager needs. A depressed teen will need their parents to provide emotional support and structure for engaging healthy activities including exercise, good nutrition, appropriate socialization, limited use of social media and managing their school and home responsibilities. Also, family counseling can help parents and teens end control battles that undermine teen accountability, create alienation and often create stress throughout the family. Parent-teen control battles can be a significant causal factor in teen depression as well. Individual therapy is an important part of the treatment too. It will help a depressed teenager learn to understand and express their most personal feelings and learn to manage them with healthy thinking and healthy behavior.

Teen depression, if thoughtfully addressed, is very treatable. With professional guidance and active parental involvement, we can help our teens regain belief in their wonderful selves and rediscover their passion for life. benefits to hiring a landscaping service >>A professional lawn service can save homeowners time, money and mistakes.
The desire to have a pristine, well-manicured landscape leads many homeowners to toil outdoors for hours every weekend. Hiring a professional landscaper can free up homeowners’ time and help them ensure their yards are cared for properly.
72 Landscaping.indd 2
april 2017
www.siparent.com
One of the benefits of hiring a landscaper is the time savings. Landscapers typically have commercial-grade equipment that can dramatically reduce the time it takes to mow and perform other maintenance tasks around your property. Furthermore, some services have multiple employees working concurrently, enabling them to tackle several projects at the same time and complete them in a fraction of the time it would take a homeowner working on his or her own. Landscapers familiar with botany and landscape design understand how to properly care for plants and trees on your property, while novice green-thumbers may be unaware about when to prune trees and shrubs, at what height to cut the lawn and which plants will thrive in particular locations. Such do-it-yourself maintenance may even cost more money than leaving it to a professional. Hiring a professional landscaper is, in many instances, more economical. For a certain weekly or monthly fee, homeowners receive the benefit of professional knowledge and execution. Also, homeowners will not have the expense of purchasing the various tools and equipment necessary for lawn and garden maintenance, tools and equipment that include lawnmowers, string weeders, edgers, fertilizer, grass seed, leaf blowers, and shovels.
Another benefit is the lawn will continue to be mowed whether a homeowner is home or not. During the spring and summer vacation season, it’s easy for homeowners to overlook their lawn and garden in favor of recreation and leisure activities. Without proper watering and maintenance, lawns and gardens can brown or overgrowth can occur. But hiring a landscaping service allows homeowners to rest assured that their yards will be maintained whether they’re home or not. Also, an overgrown and unkempt lawn is a sign that the owners are away, thus putting your home at risk for robbery. Hiring a local landscaping service will not only benefit homeowners, but also it will benefit the local economy. Residents can feel comfortable knowing their lawn service will be available for calls when needed and will be familiar with the community. If you are considering selling your home, the professional look of a well-kept lawn is very important. Curb appeal can make or break a sale in the impression a buyer gets within the first few seconds. Hiring a landscaping service can be advantageous to homeowners who want to free up time and still enjoy a well-maintained landscape.
