Important School Dates:
The winners of the 2019 Design & Editorial Awards were announced at the Parenting Media Association (PMA) Annual Conference last month in St. Petersburg, Florida. Staten Island Parent April 2-3 is honored to be the recipient of two Gold Medals, one Silver Medal, and one Bronze Medal for NY State English Language Arts Test (ELA) excellence! April 9 The Staten Island Parent Weekly E-Newsletter earned a Gold Medal in the digital category! Archdiocesan Touring Tuesday Open House Judges said of our highly informative newsletter: “A simple design is supported by a nearly endless supply of events, activities and links to family-friendly directories and other resources.” April 19-26 Also earning a Gold Medal in the Family Fun Column category is our monthly Good Sports Spring Recess: public schools closed column by sportswriter Joe LoVerde. The judges said Joe “embraces and enhances the sense of community that evolves around sports with short features that celebrate local residents’ competitive accomplishments. His experience as a coach and a veteran sports writer lends his pieces an authentic voice.” A Silver Medal in the editorial category for Profile goes to Staten Island Parent Editor Jeannine Cintron for Giving Thanks on Veteran’s Day from the November 2018 issue. Judges had this to say of the piece: “This thoughtful essay by the wife of a U.S. Marine provides a full-throttled tribute to veterans and inspires pride and compassion for all their sacrifice and unsung heroism, at home and on the battlefield.” And last, but certainly not least, we are very proud to earn a Bronze Medal for General Excellence for our website siparent.com. The judges were very impressed by our Family Calendar, saying “Particularly notable is the extensive, often-updated calendar of events, including many that are specific to the borough and don’t require a long trip. Content is carefully curated and up to date.” Staten Island Parent is proud to serve the community with award winning digital and editorial content. Thank you to the Parenting Media Association, a national trade association of regional parenting publications spanning the world. With a global reach of 6 million readers per month, we are truly humbled to be recognized by such an esteemed organization. And a huge THANK YOU goes to our wonderful, loyal readers, who inspire us every day to continue being the number one parenting resource for families in Staten Island! 12 April 2019 • siparent.com

Fort wadsorth offers free, fun programming
the staten island zoo’s new aquarium is a must-see
Fort Wadsworth – More than a Fort
Have You Seen the New Zoo Aquarium?
Did you know that Fort Wadsworth – Guardian of the Narrows – guarded the entrance to New York Harbor for more than 200 years? There is much to see and do at Wadsworth, including the Overlook, Fort Tompkins, Battery Weed, the historic Mont Sec House, the Visitor Center/Museum and more. Visitors of all ages can stroll along trails and participate in various free events held throughout the year, such as biking, birding, boating, fishing and picnicking. Numerous park ranger-led activities are available during the summer, also free of charge. In the summer, you can go camping at Camp Hudson, which features showers and is only $30 per night. Fort Wadsworth is part of the Staten Island Unit for Gateway National Recreation Area, which includes Great Kills Park, Miller Field, Swinburne and Hoffman islands. Overall, Gateway National Recreation Area is comprised of more than 27,000 acres across New York and New Jersey and is part of the National Park System. Of the 418 units in the system, it’s the first national urban park and the ranks fourth in visitations -- more than 9 million visitors annually. For more information about Gateway National Recreation Area or to plan your next visit, go to www.nps.gov/gate.
It’s been open for a few months, but with the weather warming up it’s definitely a good time to hit the Staten Island Zoo to see their beautiful new aquarium. The “walls of water” surrounding the exhibit – four large, floor-to-ceiling tanks -- are said to represent the distinct regions of the biosphere: Tropical Coral Reef; Pacific Kelp Forest; Southeast Asian Freshwater Habitat; and Atlantic/Caribbean Sea Life, creating an immersive and educational experience for visitors of all ages. As stated on their website, “The new Aquarium enhances the Zoo’s commitments to education and conservation, as we work together to meet the challenge of protecting our oceans, lakes and rivers for future generations.” The nearly $8.5 million project broke ground back in 2016 with support from Mayor Bill de Blasio, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Borough President James S. Oddo, and City Council Members Steven Matteo and Debi Rose. The Staten Island Zoo is located at 614 Broadway and open seven days a week, 10am-4:45pm. Admission is free on Wednesday afternoons after 2pm.
2019 High Rock Challenge Wanna “rock” the competition?! The 2019 High Rock Challenge Adventure Race will take place on Saturday, April 27. Held in memory of NYPD Officer John Kelly, two-member teams must run together at all times and compete in mystery events located throughout the approximately 10k course along Staten Island’s Greenbelt trail system. Proceeds from the High Rock Challenge support the Greenbelt Conservancy. Group trail runs led by the conservancy will be offered weekly to participants in order to get some tips for the challenge and sample the course. The runs will be held Saturdays in April at 10am in High Rock Park (200 Nevada Avenue). They’re free and no registration is required. Link to the registration form and more information at sigreenbelt.org or on the High Rock Challenge Facebook page. If you are interested in volunteering to assist with handing out refreshments and directing the runners, call 718-667-2165 ext. 115 or email volunteer@sigreenbelt.org.
Free Museum Access for Library Cardholders Your library card can get you more than just free books these days. Through a program called Culture Pass, you can now get free admission to dozens of cultural institutions around New York City. Here in Staten Island, you can visit Historic Richmond Town and the Jacques Museum of Tibetan Art for free. There are also tons of Culture Pass museums in Manhattan, including the Intrepid Air, Sea & Space Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Children’s Museum of the Arts, Children’s Museum, MoMA and many more. The Culture Pass program allows cardholders the ability to reserve one free day pass per participating institution per year and you can have two active reservations per library card. You must be at least 13 years old to reserve a pass. To make a reservation and see a full list of participating museums and institutions, go to culturepass.nyc.

PS 69’s Wish Tree
SUMMER IN THE CITY
P.S.69, The Daniel D. Tompkins School, has something very special to share with its visitors. It’s called the “Wish Tree” and was put together by Performing Arts teacher Alison Gaor. The tree stands in the school’s lobby, visible as soon as you walk through the front doors, and it inspires visitors daily. “Our Wish Tree was modeled after Yoko Ono’s Wish Tree,” said Mrs Gaor. “The students were encouraged to make a wish for someone other than themselves. The wishes could be for their families, their school, their neighborhood, their country or their world. Many of the humanitarian wishes are very touching, with world peace being among the most common. It’s so gratifying to see young children wishing so sincerely and showing true altruism.” According to school media specialist Kim Capasso, there are many beautiful, heartfelt wishes on the tree for peace and unity in the world, but there are just as many truly personal and heart-wrenching wishes as well. One child wished for performing arts to be every day, while another wished for her dad to get a job. One of the more heartbreaking wishes came from a child grieving the loss of a parent, who just wished for her mom to come back. Still another child graciously wished for everyone’s wishes to come true. Ms. Capasso remarked: “We are proud every day of the students that make up the P.S.69 community, but, if possible, the kindness and compassion that they have shown throughout this project has made us even prouder.”
Did you know you can prevent the “summer slide” by enrolling your child in a free summer program through the DOE? Summer in the City offers a variety of free opportunities through the Summer Academy and Summer School programs. Students spend the summer participating in engaging lessons and hands-on STEM activities, along with taking field trips to museums, parks, and other cultural sites. All DOE students are welcome to enroll in Summer in the City’s programs, including students who receive special services. Summer in the City provides transportation as well as breakfast, lunch and snack. Applications for the Summer Academy enrichment programs are open until April 26 for students in or above first grade -- but limited seats are available. STEM Summer in the City and STEM Matters will notify families of the lottery results by email in May. Families will be told whether their student has a spot in the program or is on the waiting list. Parents should contact their Principal or Parent Coordinator to request a seat or learn more about the programming available. Specific enrollment information for each Summer Academy program can be found by visiting: schools.nyc.gov/summer and clicking on the the Summer Academy page.
More School Holidays (Maybe) A new bill is being considered in Albany that would add six holidays to public schools in New York State. While two of those holidays are already days off for New York City students – Eid al-Fitr and Good Friday – the proposed bill would add Diwali, Vaisakhi, Eid al-Adha and Onam to the list, if passed. The idea behind the bill is acknowledge the “melting pot” of different cultures within New York State, enabling students from different religious and cultural backgrounds to celebrate their traditional festivities with their family and community.
Pirate park is back After a long closure, Seaside Wildlife Nature Park, better known as “Pirate Park” has reopened just in time for spring. The oceanfront park located in Great Kills boasts pirate-themed equipment with a Staten Island twist. According to Councilman Joe Borelli, a new installation of bathrooms are in the park’s future as well. Seaside Wildlife Nature Park is located at Nelson Avenue & and Tennyson Dr. (off Hylan Blvd.).

Spectrum Autism Disorder 5 Common Myths About Autism Spectrum Disorder You Should Ignore
A
While the awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder has grown due to social media, increased research, Autism Awareness Month, and more, there are still many misconceptions about ASD, from its causes to the characteristics and abilities of those on the spectrum.
s its name denotes, autism is a spectrum, meaning not everyone diagnosed with autism displays the same traits, exhibits the same behaviors, or has the same abilities—just like you or me. So applying blanket statements to those on the spectrum would be like saying girls can’t throw or boys don’t cry. There are a lot of stereotypes about autism spectrum disorder that just aren’t true—here are the five biggest misconceptions. Myth 1: Vaccines cause autism. “Unfortunately we do still hear the misconception that autism is related to vaccinations, commonly the measles, mumps, rubella vaccination,” says Sarah Kuriakose, Ph.D., BCBA-D, clinical assistant professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health. “Not only was the initial study that showed that a fraudulent study, but follow-up studies have debunked that many times,” she explains. There are other concerns that autism is caused by “various environmental factors that a pregnant mother may be exposed to and in utero some of those environ-
mental causative factors may have somehow affected the fetus,” says John Pfeifer, senior director of Clinical Services and the Family Center for Autism, part of Life’s WORC, a Long Island nonprofit that supports people with developmental disabilities and autism. “There’s still ongoing research about the expansion of electromagnetic technology and various environmental chemicals and such that may be at play, but not knowing everything in the environment that may be affecting a fetus, either seen or unseen, makes it hard to decipher that.” “What we do know about autism is there seems to be a genetic component, and about ten to twenty percent of cases with ASD are linked to an identified genetic disorder,” says Dr. Kuriakose, who is also senior director of the NYU Langone Autism and Developmental Neuroscience Initiative and the clinical director of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical and Research Program at NYU’s Child Study Center. “We anticipate that that number will go up with more genetics research. But even in identical twins, the concordance rate is not one-hundred percent, so we know there is some factor that is not genetic as well.”

raising kids Myth 2: People on the spectrum are anti-social and don’t have feelings. Dr. Kuriakose says parents, teachers, and even doctors will tell her things like, “that child can’t have autism because…he’s affectionate, …she makes eye contact, or …he’s interested in other kids.” “So what can end up happening is people have this very black-and-white picture that a person with autism is someone who is anti-social and isn’t interested in other people,” she says. “We know that those aren’t necessarily true.” Yet thanks to this persistent myth, a child who does have autism might not be given a diagnosis—his parents may be hanging on to the fact that their child is affectionate though he is struggling in other ways. “It is often thought that people with autism don’t have feelings, which is a very sad misconception and very far from the truth,” adds Janet Koch, CEO of Life’s WORC. “They are capable of having loving relationships with family members and friends.”

Myth 3: People with autism exhibit challenging and/or maladaptive behaviors. “It’s not fair to say that challenging behaviors are inherent in the diagnosis,” Pfeifer says. “They are often a byproduct of ineffective treatment of some of the things that are inherent in the diagnosis, which are communication and socialization difficulties.” These behaviors could include flapping hands, rocking, or other self-stimulatory behaviors. “We still unfortunately have the misconception from previous media portrayals that kids with autism are nonverbal, are going to sit in the corner, and just rock or flap their hands,” Dr. Kuriakose says. As society becomes more educated about autism, people are learning about adapting communication efforts. “I have young children, and they’re learning in integrated classrooms about what these behaviors may mean. It could actually help a person [on the spectrum] to not escalate to such a significant behavior because they’ll be able to communicate more easily with people who have been taught how to communicate with them,” Koch says. Myth 4: Those on the spectrum are savants and/or are fixated on one topic. The media commonly portrays those with autism as being savants or having restricted interest in a singular subject area: Sam Gardner in Netflix’s Atypical and Shaun Murphy in ABC’s The Good Doctor are two recent portrayals. “Certainly we have kids and adults with autism who have an amazing depth of knowledge in a particular area, incredible memory, incredible pattern recognition skills, things like that that are going to set them up for a particular career,” Dr. Kuriakose says, but not all people on the spectrum show these characteristics.

raising kids In fact, the most recent criteria for an ASD diagnosis from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fall into two categories: social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRB). There are four traits that fall under the RRB category—repetitive speech or behavior/mannerisms, restricted interest, sensory challenges, and difficulty with transitions or insistence on sameness—and a person needs to only exhibit two of the RRB traits (and meet criteria from the social communication category) to receive a diagnosis of autism, according to Dr. Kuriakose. “So you could have a kid who has some sensory challenges and insistence on sameness without any restricted interest at all and you could still have the diagnosis,” she says. Myth 5: People with ASD can’t go to college, have jobs, or get married. Because some people with autism may struggle with social situations, have communication challenges, and have difficulty with flexibility, there’s the misconception that they will not be able to attend higher education, have a job, or get married and have kids. “There are lots of examples of folks with autism who do successfully do those things, and the big thing that’s important is it’s all about the supports the environment can provide,” Dr. Kuriakose says. When working with a patient who is looking at colleges or employment opportunities, Dr. Kuriakose looks for a setting that is supportive of that patient’s strengths and challenges. In fact, “a lot of individuals with autism are actually really great, dedicated, passionate employees, but it has to be a setting that can understand that they might process information and interact in ways that are slightly different from typical.” In terms of getting married, Dr. Kuriakose says there are quite a few instances where she’s diagnosed a child with autism, and a few months later their parent will observe that they’re seeing some of the same characteristics in themselves or another family member. “And these are all people who had families,” she says. So how can we continue to combat these and other myths about people on the spectrum? “Just like with any other group, you shed your misconceptions when you have more close relationships with people in that group,” Dr. Kuriakose says. “And so I really would encourage people to engage with lots of individuals with autism.” By Katelin Walling

Top 10 ‘Oughta Knows’ for parents of children Newly Diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder
Where can you turn when you get an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis for your child? There are so many aspects, so many options and so much confusion. The following tips may help you ride the waves during this tumultuous and overwhelming time, and might be helpful to those sailing along with a not-sonewly diagnosed child as well.
Early diagnosis and early treatment yield the best results Research shows that children who receive quality therapy in their earlier years tend to do better in the long run. It might be overwhelming to figure out how all these therapy hours can fit into your life, but once you start to see results it will all be worthwhile. Find what works for your child There are all kinds of therapies out there, and some may appeal to you more than others. Look for therapies that are research-based, as they are most likely to yield results for your child and your family. Alternative therapies are like a cherry on top, but the meat and potatoes of treatment should be research-based. Communication is key Communication skills should be at the top of every parent’s list of goals for their newly-diagnosed child. And rightfully so. One of the most important components of a good treatment package for a child
with autism/ASD is speech and language therapy. Even other interventionists (such as DI, SEIT, and ABA technicians) will be happy to collaborate and embed language skills within other teaching opportunities. Remember: no one knows your child as well as you As a parent, you know your child better than anyone else. You may not know the technical jargon, but you definitely know your child’s likes, dislikes, strengths, and weak spots. As such, you are your child’s best advocate. Be sure that you are comfortable with the therapy that is being provided for your child. It has to work for both of you in order for it to be effective. Don’t compare Resist the temptation to compare your child with another child who has a similar diagnosis. The diagnosis of autism/ASD includes a range of abilities and disabilities, and your child will need support in the areas of weakness that are most specific to him. You will also need to focus on his specific strengths as well, since they will help build a foundation for continued learning

and progress. These strength and weaknesses will always differ from one child to another. Read up! There are myriad parent-friendly books that can guide you at any stage of your child’s development. All kinds of books can be helpful: informational, treatment-based books and support books can help you understand this new journey with your child. Autism with HEART: A Guide for Parents with Newly Diagnosed Kids by Katherine Kanaaneh is a must-read, so start there. Utilize available resources in your area There are many autism-affiliated organizations and forums that can be helpful to you. From family events, support networks and informational forums to online blogs where you can ask questions and hear from others, there is a lot to gain from reaching out to others in your situation. We all need support, and you can surely find a medium that works for you without going very far. Talk to your insurance company Your insurance policy might cover treatment options to help your child progress. These interventions can include ABA therapy, speech therapy, as well as occupational and physical therapies. A robust therapeutic approach can help your child make gains in many areas at once, so be sure to see what is available to you through your insurance coverage. Progress is a process We all want to see progress right away, but it is rarely immediate. Establishing structure that will help your child learn and grow can take some time. Just be assertive if you feel you are not seeing enough progress over a period of time. There need for a change in technique or teaching style. You are not alone Feeling alone is isolating and downright depressing. There are many people who are in the same boat, or further along on their journey. Many would be happy to share with you their moments of joy as well as moments of pain. Finding the proper support system for yourself can directly and positively affect your child, your spouse and your family. By Adina Frankel, BCBA, who has many years of experience working with children diagnosed with ASD. She is a co-owner of MasterMind Behavior Services, which provides ABA therapy to children on the autism spectrum.

Living with Life-Threatening
Allergies
Staten Island Parents Discuss How They Manage Severe Allergies
By Christine Albano
W
hen a child has the occasional common cold or stomach bug, parents may feel helpless as their kids suffer through the symptoms for a few stressful days. But, when a child is diagnosed with a severe food or environmental allergy, it can totally transform a child’s daily routine and lead to a lifetime of pain and suffering–with little relief and lots of worry, Staten Island parents said. Calling 911 as she watched her two and half year-old daughter Cristina vomiting, turning shades of green and yellow, and having trouble breathing is a memory that Francine Brown will never forget. Yet, the Huguenot mother said the experience taught her that life would never be the same when caring for a child diagnosed with a severe, life-threatening food or environmental allergy. She and other Staten Island parents aren’t alone– anaphylaxis to food results in 30,000 emergency room visits and 2,000 hospitalizations annually, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. At the time, Ms. Brown didn’t realize that her daughter was in the middle of anaphylactic shock after eating a cashew nut. Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within seconds of exposure to a food or allergen and triggers an immune system reaction that includes declining blood pressure, narrow airways, blocked breathing, skin rash, nausea and vomiting. “She started with an itchy throat,” the Huguenot mother recalled. “Within seconds her lips and eyes swelled up like blisters,” she explained. She turned pale like a ghost.” The words “Mommy, I can’t breathe” sent her into a panic during the ordeal and she feared for her daughter’s life in the back of an ambulance.
Life is not the same Later, tests revealed Cristina was allergic to peanuts and tree nuts -- today, her condition has dramatically changed her life and her family must take huge precautions in their everyday, normal routines. Over 6 million children in the United States have food allergies, according to a new study from Northwestern Medicine in Chicago. “As a parent it is the scariest thing ever,” Mrs. Brown said. “Everywhere we go it’s a huge concern.” To make matters worse, her daughter -- now a 5-year-old kindergartner -- is also asthmatic, but regulated with medication and can participate in outdoor activities, like playing soccer. “I worry every second of the day about her life -- especially in school,” Mrs. Brown said. Today, 1 in 13 kids has a food allergy, which translates to 2 kids in every classroom, according to 2019 statistics in the Northwestern study conducted by board-certified pediatrician and health researcher Dr. Ruchi Gupta.
Fourth grader Alex DeMeo struggles with several food allergies.
Cristina, like many youngsters, loves to dance and is a Girl Scout -- but her daily routine is highly impacted by her food allergies. Her daughter has a paraprofessional at school, and can’t go anywhere without antihistamines, like Benadryl, and Epinephrine -- a self-injectable medication known as an Epi-pen that is approved by the FDA to reverse severe allergy symptoms. All family members are knowledgeable about how to administer her medication if needed -- and about her limited diet, according to her mother. The family is extra cautious when eating out and avoids foods, such as bakery items, ice cream, sprinkles, and Asian food. They almost always avoid having desserts at restaurants -- unless the waiter takes a photo of the label for Mrs. Brown’s careful inspection. They also avoid sleepovers, playdates -- unless they occur at her house -- and taking vacations outside of the United States. “I carry snacks and food with me at all times,” Mrs. Brown said, adding that she supplies a container of nut-free snacks at school and brings

Deidre Noto-Piccolino knows firsthand how unnerving it can be to live with an allergy-impacted lifestyle after her son, Peter, suddenly became highly allergic at age 15 following surgery for osteoid osteoma on his tibia bone. Shortly after surgery, crackers, juice, and other foods were bothersome to his throat -- and one episode of eating cookies and peanut butter led to his throat closing up and he couldn’t breathe, she explained.

Vehicle Collisions NYPD Rolls Out Pilot Program for Self-Reporting of Vehicle Collisions in Staten Island
A
By Michael Reilly, NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.
s of March, motorists in Staten Island are now able to report their property-damage-only vehicle collisions without police assistance. The department has implemented a pilot program on Staten Island wherein motorists involved in vehicle collisions with only property damage will be responsible for exchanging information, preparing their own report of motor vehicle accident and forwarding it to the DMV as per the instructions on the form. Police communications technicians will connect the caller to a pre-recorded message explaining that the police will not respond and the motorist will be provided with further instructions. The New York City Police Department recently released the following information to guide drivers if they are unfortunately involved in a vehicle collision. First and foremost, your safety is the number one priority. If you are involved in a vehicle collision: • Shift your vehicle into “park.” • Check yourself and any passengers for injuries. • If you cannot move your vehicle, or if medical assistance is needed, dial “911” and follow the operator’s instructions. If your vehicle is operable, and no one in your vehicle has suffered any injuries, you should move to secure location. This can be the nearest shoulder or the median. Once your vehicle is in a safe area you may exit to assess the situation. Following these guidelines will: • Protect you from oncoming traffic • Allow safe passage for other motorists not involved • Provide easier access for emergency responders to reach you, if necessary.
COLLISIONS WITH MINOR PROPERTY DAMAGE (per the new program) If you are involved in a vehicle collision that only results in property damage motorists are not required to report the incident to the police. If there is only property damage, motorists are only responsible for exchanging their driver’s license information, insurance and vehicle registration with all other motorists involved. For insurance purposes, a Report of Motor Vehicle Accident should be filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles. This form can be found at dmv.ny.gov/forms.mv104.pdf. Motorists should note that A Report of Motor Vehicle Accident must be filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles within 10 days of a collision, if the collision caused damage over $1,000 to the property of any one person. Failure to file the report within 10 days can result in suspension of your driver’s license. Leaving the scene of a collision before exchanging your information with other motorists is illegal under the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law. Additionally, you are required to remain on the scene and contact the police immediately after a vehicle collision when: • Any person is injured or killed; • A domestic animal is injured or killed • A parked vehicle, or any other property is damaged, and the owner cannot be located. • Suspected criminality (e.g. allegations of intoxication, etc.) • Disputes • A city-involved vehicle collision • Motorist is unwilling to exchange information

The Dirty Truth About Vaping AND WHY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE AT THE HIGHEST RISK
With enticing flavors like cotton candy, fruity pebbles and chocolate covered strawberries, it’s no wonder the popularity of e-cigarettes/ vape pens have skyrocketed. With over 7,000 flavors and hundreds of brands, these products are aggressively marketed to attract youth and create a whole new generation of smokers.
How do they work? E-cigarettes function by turning liquid into vapor via heat. What many people might not realize is the liquid is usually loaded with nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. The heating process creates an aerosol which users inhale into their lungs. There is an increased amount of chemicals delivered to the user upon inhalation depending upon how hot the liquid is heated. Bystanders can also breathe in this unhealthy air when the user exhales. Are they safe? The U.S. Surgeon General reports e-cigarettes are not safe and contain dangerous and harmful ingredients, including carcinogens and cancer-causing chemicals like formaldehyde, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerin, and benzene. Toxic metals such as tin, nickel, cadmium, lead, and mercury have been found in e-cigarette aerosol, sometimes occurring in concentrations two to 100 times that of traditional cigarettes. Studies have proven that mostly all e-cigarettes contain highly addictive nicotine. Who is most at risk? E-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product amongst youth. Many believe these products are safe, blissfully unaware of what e-cigarette liquid is actually made of. Some perceive these products to
contain zero nicotine, or worse yet, they are unaware of what nicotine is or its effects altogether. The unfortunate truth is nicotine is especially harmful to young people. It stimulates the central nervous system and raises blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate. Adolescent exposure to nicotine can damage brain development, impulse control, and primes young brains for addiction. What can be done? Parents and caregivers can set a positive example by being tobacco-free. For free help, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. Talk to your children about the dangers of e-cigarettes and tobacco products. Provide them with well-researched information and have open discussions on e-cigarettes and vaping often. Tobacco Free Staten Island, a local organization whose goal is to eradicate youth smoking entirely, is working tirelessly to educate the community on tobacco-free policies, particularly in areas where young people congregate and are more likely to use. The group also works to educate local legislators on the importance of point of sale marketing policies and impact of flavors. For more information, contact Ashley Zanatta, Community Engagement Manager of Tobacco-Free Staten Island at 718-475.5277 or azanatta@sijcc.com.

Team Sports Aren’t For Every Kid Your child might enjoy individual sports instead
I
Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. Read more sports advice @ www.siparent.com/goodsports
t’s only natural for parents to want to sign up their children for team sports when they get old enough. Maybe it’s for a sport one of the parents, or both, enjoyed as a child, and they want to share that common thread. Perhaps it’s for the opportunity to have their youngster socialize with other children his or her own age. Or maybe it’s just the desire to have their child engaged in a fun form of exercise. The thing is, playing a team sport isn’t always the best fit for every child. Take Andrew, for instance. Andrew was seven years old when he played on one of the soccer teams I coached a number of years ago. When we were teaching tactics, Andrew was often distracted by the seagulls or blowing leaves or whatever. He said he liked playing goalkeeper so I would put him in that position, hoping he would show some more interest in what was going on by playing the posi-
tion he chose. But I often would find him holding onto one of the goal posts with one hand, spinning himself around until he was dizzy while shots went flying past him. It’s not unusual for the attention span of a seven-year-old to wander, but Andrew never really showed any interest in soccer. So I had a talk with his parents. I told them that he was athletic but might be better suited for an individual sport, where he would be engaged all the time instead of waiting for the game to come to him. They took the advice and signed him up for swimming. He loved it. I missed seeing Andrew, a truly nice little boy, but was glad to be able to make a suggestion that was more beneficial and enjoyable for him. Sometimes a change isn’t warranted. Sometimes it’s just a matter of allowing the child time to mature. All kids are different and advance at their own pace.

I coached a girl once who cried during the entire first practice and refused to get on the field — and she went on to become a high school all star in that sport. So although my advice to Andrew’s parents seemed to be the right one, such a suggestion shouldn’t be made without allowing the child at least a season to adjust. The problem with team sports — like football, basketball, baseball and soccer — is that there can be some standing around when instruction is taking place, or even during a game. There are ways to run practices where you can keep more players busy at the same time, but there will always be times when the children will be inactive. This is one of the reasons I believe individual sports instruction has become so popular today. The focus is solely on the child receiving lessons, keeping her or him fully occupied. With individual sports — such as bowling, tennis, golf, swimming, track and field, and gymnastics, for example — there is very little standing

around during practice. You’re either working on your technique or exercise, or taking a short break to recover. The beauty of all of those sports is that they are individual in nature within a team setting, so there are plenty of opportunities to be around other children and make friendships while engaging in a fun form of exercise. So if your child isn’t taking to a team sport the way you had hoped, try signing him or her up for an individual sport. It could be the start of a rewarding, long-lasting relationship between your child and that sport. April 2019 • siparent.com

Q
uestion: I hear that children starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school are going to be required to read more nonfiction, from news articles to historic documents. What is the reason for this new emphasis on reading nonfictional materials? – Changing Times Answer: What has happened is the realization that both college classes and many careers require the ability to read more complex materials. Out in the work world, most of what people read in their careers requires the ability to understand informational text. Back in 2005, only 51 percent of ACT-tested high school students were ready for college-level reading. Furthermore, current research is showing that many college and junior college students need to take remedial courses. This lack of reading readiness for college is one of the indicators why so many freshmen are dropping out of school. Until the enactment of Common Core Standards, rigorous reading standards were close to nonexistent. The standards expect that in elementary and middle school, at least half of what students read should be nonfiction. This figure will accelerate to 70 percent of reading material by 12th grade.
While classrooms from kindergarten through high school are now having students read more nonfiction material, not all states have adopted the standards. Plus, it is very important that teachers instruct students in how to read this material -- not all do so. One thing for sure is that parents need to be encouraging more nonfictional reading at home. Here are just a few ways that they can do this: • Give children who are interested in specific sports or hobbies magazines on these topics. • Introduce new board games, and have children read the rules and explain them to the players. • Have them follow a topic of interest on Twitter. • Engage children in the process of researching places to visit on a family trip. • Have them follow favorite sports teams online and in newspapers. Question: I have heard about Earth Day. When is it, and what is it? – Eco-Friendly Answer: Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970. Nowadays, it is celebrated around the world. In the United States, it is always celebrated on April 22. This year it falls on a Monday so you may want to celebrate it over the

LIPM weekend when your family is at home together. Why don’t you have your family join the more than 1 billion people celebrating this day by improving the environment in some way? Join one of the many Earth Day events in your community. You could be part of a group working to improve city, state or national parks. Other groups clean up streams, plant gardens at schools and pick up street trash. Have a family discussion tonight. Try one of the following: • Recycling is always a good place to begin. Commit your family to separating recyclables from your trash every week. • Plant a tree for every member of your family. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. • Start turning lights off when you leave a room. Unplug appliances when they are not in use. When you use less electricity, less oil and gas are being used to create electricity. • Build a compost pile. Find a section of your yard in a back corner and start putting all the leaves and grass cuttings from your yard in this pile. It will decompose, then you will be able to put it in the soil for other plants in your yard. • Make bird feeders. This can be done by collecting pinecones and dipping them in peanut butter or honey and covering them with birdseed. Whatever your family decides to do on Earth Day will make a difference. Your family may even do similar activities throughout the year – making the earth better for everyone Question: My child simply doesn’t hold information in her head very well, so she has trouble following directions or doing mental math. How can her shortterm memory skills be boosted? – Can’t Remember .Answer: Unfortunately, the demands on your daughter’s memory skills will continue not only throughout her educational career, but throughout her life. What she needs to do is to improve her working memory, which will allow her to hold on and work with the information stored in her short-term memory. Show her how to use the activities below to build her memory skills: • Use funny rhymes, songs and acronyms to remember lists of facts. • Associate new learning with something familiar. • Use the outline approach. Learn general concepts and then fill in the details. • Group information together in a related area. Organizing information can significantly improve memory. • Overlearn the material. This is the most effective strategy that your daughter can use. • Say what she is trying to learn out loud. Repetition helps information to be retained. • Work on visualization skills. Create mental pictures in her mind. • Teach what she has to memorize to someone else. • Play card and matching games.
