everything you need to know about your community Huntington Learning Center Reopens on Staten Island Huntington Learning Center celebrated the grand reopening of their Staten Island location last month, relocating from Hylan Blvd. to a larger state-of-the-art facility at The Staten Island Mall. “We’re thrilled to unveil our new modern center to the public and continue our mission of giving every student the best education possible,” said Kelly Hansen, Center Director of the Huntington Staten Island. “We are honored to be a part of such a well-respected organization celebrating 40 years of helping students succeed in school.” Huntington Learning Center offers personalized tutoring and test preparation instruction to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. For more information about the new Staten Island location or to schedule an appointment, call 718-494-8377 or visit siparent.com to link to their website.

Supply The Love It’s time to start your back-to-school supply shopping and you might want to consider filling the backpack of a child in need this year as you check off your own child’s list. Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s annual Operation Backpack provide backpacks and school supplies to thousands of NYC’s homeless children during the back-toschool season each year. “All children who attend New York City schools, no matter who they are or where they are from, deserve to have the basic tools and supplies to succeed. So many generous Staten Islanders have made Operation Backpack a success because they agree with that idea,” said Minority Leader Steven Matteo, who has participated in the program since 2014. “I am asking borough residents to once again help thousands of children by donating to this great program.” Donations can be dropped off Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, at Matteo’s office, 900 South Avenue, Suite 403 until August 25. For more information on specific supplies needed for each grade, link to the Volunteers of America website at siparent.com.

Forbidden Fruit Juice Do you give your baby fruit juice? The American Academy of Pediatrics is now saying that may not be such a great idea, citing that fruit juice offers no nutritional benefits to children under age 1. A new policy statement offers the following updated AAP recommendations: • No juice before age 1 • For toddlers ages 1-3, up to half a cup per day (4 oz) • For children ages 4-6, up to three-quarters cup per day (6 oz) • For children and teens ages 7-18, up to 1 cup per day (8 oz) • Do not put juice in a sippy cup or bottle that the child carries around • Offer your child whole fruit, which has both the vitamins and fiber that children need. Go online to siparent.com to link to more information on AAP guidelines and recommendations.

Staten Island’s Most Innovative Students Congratulations to Abigail Brown, 18, Yousef Alsayid, 17, Curtis Mason, 17, and Mark Ayad, 16, of the College of Staten Island, and Michael Klamkin, 16, of Staten Island Technical High School, who were honored at the 3rd annual “Young Innovators to Watch” award competition for their impressive projects. The CSI students designed the “MACAY Labs HiFi Mod,” a high-fidelity speaker that attaches to a smart phone to allow users to customize their audio experience with studio-quality sound. The Staten Island Tech student created “Dual Extended Kalman Filtering,” a new approach to monitoring the charge of lithium-ion polymer batteries that is much more accurate than the battery life monitor built in to a phone.

10 new CSN 2.indd 4

The winners were honored during CE (consumer electronics) Week in July for their inventive projects. The Young Innovators to Watch competition honors students who are using technology and STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) skills to create the products of tomorrow. The projects are ranked on their creativity, user design, use of STEM and STEAM, scalability and civic mindedness. “This is hard stuff. Students working in tech and the sciences need some positive reinforcement and there’s no better place to recognize them then at CE Week where they can see the most exciting tech innovation and careers,” says Robin Raskin, the program’s creator. “Being recognized at an industry technology showcase is really empowering for these winners.”

Cashless Tolls, Carpool Programs and More:

What Staten Island Drivers Should Know Cashless Tolls at the Verrazano Bridge In December 2016, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced “Open Road Tolling” that will be operational at all Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Bridges and Tunnels by the end of 2017. The Verrazano Bridge transitioned to “Cashless Tolling” on Saturday July 8, 2017. This transition incorporated new enforcement and security initiatives. Enforcement and Security The MTA Cashless Toll plan brings increased enforcement and security to MTA crossings, such as the Verrazano Bridge. Security teams, comprised of an additional 150 State Troopers, National Guard units and MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers will focus on public safety and toll enforcement. In an effort to establish uniformity and increased presence, Governor Cuomo instructed the MTA to paint all Bridge and Tunnel Officer vehicles to match the colors of New York State Police vehicles. At each Bridge and Tunnel crossing, advanced cameras and sensors will be installed to read license plates and test emerging facial recognition software and equipment. These technologies will also be utilized across airports and transit hubs, establishing a system-wide anti-terrorism plan. Enforcement of unpaid tolls will be a top priority. New state laws and regulations have strengthened penalties for those who evade paying tolls. Toll scofflaws are now subject to $50 violation fees, car registration suspensions, and other enforcement actions in addition to late fees that accrue when an initial toll bill is unpaid. If the vehicle is registered in New York and the owner fails to respond to 3 bills requesting payment, the vehicle’s registration may be suspended. Verrazano Bridge - Staten Island Resident Carpool Program “The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is the only one of our MTA crossings where we have a carpool plan, and those Staten Island residents in the current resident

discount program will have their carpool tickets replaced with E-tickets, which will require eligible Staten Island residents to use an E-ZPass tag in an eligible Staten Island registered vehicle,” the MTA said in a statement. The MTA and E-ZPass have mailed forms to current Staten Island Resident Carpool participants to apply for the HOV Mode E-ZPass, which will also serve as the traditional E-ZPass tag at other crossings and when the motorist has less than 3 occupants when crossing the Verrazano Bridge. After receiving the HOV tag you will have to return the traditional E-ZPass tag in the pre-paid envelope sent to you. If you are a current Verrazano Bridge Carpool Plan participant you should have a received a letter with an HOV E-ZPass Tag request form. Fill it out and send it in. If you have leftover paper carpool tickets you can request a refund by mailing them to; TBTA Staten Island Resident Carpool Ticket Refund, Revenue Management, 2 Broadway, 23rd Floor, New York, NY 10004. Requests will be processed within four to six weeks. Port Authority: Bayonne Bridge – Cashless Tolls, Carpool Program The Port Authority of NY & NJ implemented All Electronic Toll Collections on the Bayonne Bridge. The Bayonne Bridge is the only Port Authority Staten Island crossing transitioning to Cashless Toll Collection at this time. The Port Authority has removed the carpool option at the Bayonne Bridge since there are no longer toll collectors present to verify the number of occupants in the vehicle. The Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossings will continue to have both E-ZPass and cash toll options as well as the carpool option. The Bayonne Bridge cashless toll system works similar to the MTAs system. A bill will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner when the vehicle crosses the Bayonne Bridge without an E-ZPass. If the vehicle is registered in New York and the toll is not paid after 3 attempts for collection the vehicle’s registration may be suspended for failure to pay.

O

ne of the biggest concerns a new mom has is whether or not she is producing enough milk. In fact at some point during their breastfeeding journey, many women will want to know how to increase their milk supply The very first thing to note is that breastmilk supply responds to demand. The more your baby feeds, the more milk your body will make.

6. Find a lactation consultant. A lactation consultant is your best option for getting an expert opinion on what may be causing your low milk supply. He/she can ensure your baby’s latching well, you’re in the best nursing position and will provide general advice and encouragement. Good luck on your breastfeeding journey!

Next, relax and trust your body AND your baby. If your baby is gaining weight (per your pediatrician) and having sufficient wet diapers, then he/she is most likely getting enough milk. However, if you suspect or worry that you have a low milk supply, there are ways to increase your breastmilk production naturally.

1. Nurse on demand. Watch for cues that indicate that baby is hungry and allow him/her to nurse as much as he/she wants. This will signal to your body to produce more milk to meet the demand. 2. Have a healthy, balanced diet. Nursing moms need about 500 more calories than non-nursing women and it’s important to make them count. Opt for nutrient-dense foods and forget the empty calories from processed foods. 3. Hydrate. You need water to produce milk. Get in the habit of drinking an 8-ounce glass of water every time you breastfeed, plus a couple more each day. When baby drinks, mother drinks. 4. Try lactation cookies. Some healthy snacking? While there are many varieties available in the stores, you can try this simple recipe for lactation cookies that will help to increase your milk supply. 5. Get more rest. Breastfeeding is hard work, so you need to rest to give your body the energy needed to produce milk. It’s easier said than done, but try napping when baby is sleeping or having someone watch baby for even a hour while you get some zzzs.

Pumpkin Spice Lactation Cookies Lactation cookies! A tasty treat that you can whip up in no time to boost your milk supply. Whole oats, brewer’s yeast, and flax meal will provide your body with much needed vitamins and minerals necessary for supporting lactation. Prep time 10 mins Bake time 15 mins Total time 25 mins Serves 2 1/2 dozen Ingredients • 1 cup whole wheat flour • 1 cup oats • 1/4 cup coconut sugar • 1 Tbsp. pumpkin pie spice • 3 Tbsp. brewer’s yeast • 3 tbsp. fresh ground flaxseeds • 1 tsp. baking soda • 1 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 6 tbsp coconut oil • 1 egg • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1 15 oz. can pumpkin puree Directions 1. Preheat your oven to 350°. 2. Mix the dry in ingredients in a bowl. 3. Combine the coconut oil, egg, vanilla, and pumpkin puree in a separate bowl. 4. Mix pumpkin mixture into dry ingredients. 5. Scoop heaping tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto a cookie sheet. Leave about 1 1/2 to 2 inches between each scoop. 6. Bake for 15 minutes. Baking times may vary. 7. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

breastfeeding moms in staten island THESE MOMS ARE CREATING THEIR OWN “VILLAGE” Staten Island has come so far in the past few years regarding the acceptance and support for breastfeeding families. While there still exists debate among local women about how much input local hospitals offer for both sides of the infant feeding decision, the majority of new moms are deciding to start off nursing their infants. But what happens after the first few days? What’s a new mom to do?

16

august 2017

Every year since 1991, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) declares the first week of August to be World Breastfeeding Week. Over 120 countries throughout the globe have events to gather families for a themed celebration. This year’s theme is “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together” and the promotional material discusses how “it takes a village” to breastfeed.

The most active and largest entity in breastfeeding support on Staten Island can be found on Facebook. Staten Island Breastfeeding Moms (SIBFM) has become a virtual 24-hour peer support group for over 1000 nursing women. Started about seven years ago, it is commercial free and run by a committee of administrators, adding new moms daily.

The good news is that Staten Island is growing its own breastfeeding village! There has been an active La Leche League chapter on Staten Island for many years, the hospitals offer breastfeeding support, there are informational fairs and sessions at retail locations, and there are professional lactation consultant services offered (covered by most insurance companies).

What is amazing about this group is how stress-free it appears to be. There is very little controversy or disagreement. Moms are accepted without judgement. Questions are posted at all times of the day and night, and there is always someone who is willing to answer, even if it’s just to send some love and a hug through cyberspace. And although there are a few breastfeeding professionals who

are members, no personal professional advice is given on the page. This is specifically a mother-to-mother group, with advice to seek professional support when it seems appropriate. There are bimonthly in-person meetings, but many moms who have met through the group have become close friends and get together more often with their children. The reason this peer support model is so successful is because women who breastfeed need to have other women to rely on, to talk to, and learn from, and SIBFM provides that. This is especially vital in a culture that has been bottlefeeding for a few generations, as Staten Island has been. So many moms today have never observed a baby nursing before their baby was born and don’t have family who understands how nursing is different than bottlefeeding. Members report that this group helps them to feel less alone, and they appreciate knowing where to turn when they have concerns and questions. They are comforted by the varied range of women who share their feeding and parenting goals. They appreciate the “no judgement” zone and feeling lifted up when they are having challenges. One member remarked that this is the only local group she is in where only serious questions are allowed and advice is given sincerely with no hidden agenda. One mom described the benefits of the group as “amazing support from real, everyday moms when you feel like you have nothing left and you want to give up.” Tracy B, who joined last November, had this heartwarming message about SIBFM, “The advice and experiences of like-minded women are inspirational and practical…I am regularly reminded of how strong, knowledgeable, insightful, and passionate women can be. As a new mom raising a daughter, that is as helpful and as important as the amazing network of information provided on this forum.” What a great testament to the idea of a “village” on our Island! On August 2nd, these women will gather in a local backyard to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week. They will meet in person, to forge friendships started in cyberspace. They will congratulate each other, watch their children play together, enjoy healthy pot-luck snacks, raffles, and celebrate how much they have accomplished together. grilling great veggies One of the highlights of the summer season is the incredible bounty of fresh produce. Grilling vegetables gives them a smoky, delicious dimension. Here are some expert tips and recipes for flavor perfection.

Photograph: Joshua Bousel

grilled zucchini rolls Ingredients

• 3 medium zucchinis, sliced 1/4-inch thick, lengthwise • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 4 ounces soft goat cheese or cream cheese at room temperature • 2 tablespoons sun-dried tomatoes, oil-packed and minced • 1 teaspoon oil from the sun-dried tomatoes • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, minced • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, freshly grated

grilling tips

• When preparing vegetables, slice them to expose as much of the vegetable to the grill surface as you can. • Coat vegetables with olive oil before placing them on grill. This helps prevent them from sticking to the grill. • Use the right tool for the job. Accessories like grill toppers and skewers are perfect for keeping smaller foods like cherry tomatoes and onions from rolling around or falling through the grate. • Don’t leave vegetables unattended. Vegetables are delicate and can easily overcook if not monitored. • Grill extras. Leftover grilled vegetables are great in soups, salads, sandwiches and on pizzas and pasta.

Directions:

1. Preheat the grill on medium. Brush both sides of sliced zucchini with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place on the grill and cook for 4 minutes per side. When cooked, set on a wire rack to cool. 2. In a small bowl, combine the cheese, salt, pepper, sun-dried tomatoes, oil and thyme. 3. Using a small spatula, spread the cheese mixture thinly over one side of the zucchini. Lightly roll the zucchini, and place seam side down on a small, parchment-lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Place baking sheet on top rack of the grill for 15 minutes. Remove to a platter and serve.

make it a pizza party

• Generously flour a large flat cutting board or rimless

baking sheet (preferred). Stretch or roll dough to desired thickness and lay on board or baking sheet. Drizzle olive oil on dough and spread to all edges of dough. Sprinkle oiled dough with cracked pepper and Italian seasoning and press seasoning into the dough. • Layer grilled vegetables on pizza as desired. Press veggies into dough to keep them in place. Sprinkle your choice of cheese on top of pizza. • Grill pizza: Turn off one burner of preheated grill. Oil grill grates above the off burner. Slide pizza off pan and onto oiled grill. Close lid and cook for 4 minutes. • Open lid and use a pizza peel or large grilling spatula to turn the pizza 180 degrees. Close lid and continue to grill for 4-5 minutes, until edges are golden brown. Cook time will vary based on grill and temperature. • Use pizza peel or large spatula to slide pizza off the grill and back onto baking sheet. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes and slice into wedges. Enjoy! jennabraddock.com

dog days of summer indoor fun! When those dog days of summer hit, sometimes the last place you want to be is outdoors. Same goes for wet and rainy days. But how do you keep the kids from losing their minds with boredom? Here’s a few games to try: Lego Color Hunt – Get four pieces of different-colored construction paper, then collect 10 Lego pieces that match each one. Hide all of the Lego pieces around the house (you can use Lego Duplo for younger children). Once they find each Lego, they must return it to the construction paper. Time the race and the fastest one wins! From whatmomslove.com. Homemade Lava Lamp - Fill a soda bottle about two thirds of the way with oil and the rest of the way with water, leaving about an inch free at the top. Add several drops of food coloring. Break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into three or four pieces and then drop a piece. As soon as the tablet hits the layer of water, it will start to fizz and the colored water will erupt! The bubbles will stop as soon as the tablet dissipates, but they will start up again as soon as you add another tablet. From pbs.org. Nerf Target Practice – Here’s a constructive way to play with all the Nerf guns lying around the house. Take a bunch of plastic cups to create a tower, then take turns knocking down the cups. You could also use a ball or a beanbag to knock down the tower. From busykidshappymom.org. Paper Airplane Tape Landing Strip – Create a “runway” like shown using masking tape and have kids take turns tossing their paper airplanes for maximum points. From meaningfulmam.com. For more ideas on keeping kids busy when you’re stuck at home, go to siparent.com/indoorfun. You’ll find more indoor games for kids, the top board game picks for families, crafting all year round, movie night ideas and more!

readiness for kindergarten: A Parent’s Guide to Basic Skills

In today’s more academic environment, much of the creative play and art activity that was once part of the kindergarten curriculum has moved down to pre-school classrooms or daycares, and children are expected to dive into reading and writing in Kindergarten from day one.

Kindergarten Readiness.indd 2

Parents may feel the pressure of greater responsibility to introduce learning in the home. In our fast-paced culture with both parents working, there may not seem to be enough hours in the day. The result? Parents feel stressed over the possibility their child isn’t ready for the rigors of classroom learning. An Overview of Readiness Skills Readiness for learning is more than just what a child can do with a pencil and paper. There are four basic readiness areas and corresponding entry-level expectations to help you assess if your child is well-prepared or if he or she can benefit from some extra support at home before entering Kindergarten. Young children are very adaptable and can learn new skills quickly when they’re introduced in a positive manner. Even a few weeks of practice on a certain skill will produce good results.

using a tissue, covering a sneeze or cough, etc.) • Play well with other children, take turns, care about the feelings of others, share, cooperate, say please and thank you? • Follow two or three step directions? • Express feelings in a safe way? • Clean up toys or work areas when it is time? • Complete projects? • Know his or her own full name, address, phone number? • Know names of body parts? • Know his or her own age and birthday?

Social Readiness: Does your child… • Have basic health and hygiene skills in place? (using the bathroom, washing hands,

Reading/Writing Readiness: Does your child… • Name and describe familiar objects in the environment?

Building emotional skills takes time and practice. Give your child simple chores to build responsibility. Give simple directions and support your child in completing the task. Talk about ways to get along with others and give reminders when necessary. Provide proper instruction for hygiene skills.

• Speak clearly in complete sentences? • Express thoughts or needs using words? • Know children’s rhymes or songs? • Recognize words that begin with the same sound? • Recognize and name most of the letters and identify their sounds? • Know the parts of a book—cover, title, pages, words, pictures? • Enjoy listening to stories? • Write his or her own name? • Say the alphabet? • “Write” a story using pictures or some letters? • Hear parts of words (syllables) such as birth day? Reading and writing skills are extremely important to learning. Your child should hear stories read aloud every day and take part in the process at an ever-increasing rate. Ask questions as you read. Have your child make predictions and see if they were right. Point out simple words and talk about unique words in the text. Allow a child to retell a story in his or her own words. Provide lots of writing supplies. Pictures will evolve into approximated letter shapes. Standard writing will soon follow. Physical Readiness: Does your child… • Cut well with scissors? • Hold and use a pencil? • Tie his or her own shoes? • Draw and trace basic shapes? • Bounce a ball and catch a ball? • Ride a tricycle or bicycle • Enjoy running, jumping and climbing? • Hop, jump, skip? • Sit still and focus on a story or other group activity? Materials to help grow physical skills related to learning include crayons, markers, pencils, glue, scissors, paper and paints, puzzles, building toys such as Legos and blocks. Encourage your child to run and play out of doors. Playing ball, using playground equipment and other outdoor physical activities will build skills. Licensed by the Bureau of Day Care

#Socializing Technology vs. T

Traditional Activities for Staten island Teens

eens and pre-teens on Staten Island are socializing with their friends in a variety of ways – actively through traditional sports, afterschool clubs, and social excursions, and virtually by using communications apps designed to simulate a get-together even when they are miles apart. Technology has provided no shortage of options when it comes to teenagers spending time with their friends – hence the popular social media explosion that has taken today’s generation of teens by storm. A recent survey of American teenagers ages 13 to 17 found that teens have shifted their favored social media platforms and are now most likely to use Instagram and Snapchat to socialize and communicate. A total of 76% of the teens use Instagram, and 75% use Snapchat, according to the April 2017 study by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Donna Harkins of Westerleigh said Snapchat is her 17-year-old son Thomas’ most popular means of social networking, and socializing with

friends, followed by Instagram. “With a cellphone, he very rarely uses his computer for social media,” she said. “It seems that his phone is constantly dinging from one friend to another, all the time. Constant group chats, either via text messages or Snapchat.” While statistics on social media usage are high, Staten Island teens aren’t glued to their computer, tablet, or mobile cell phone screens 24/7 – though it sometimes may seem that way, according to some Staten Island parents. Denise DeMorato of Tottenville said her three kids all use social media to socialize – but balance that with different physical activities and hobbies that run the gamut depending on their age range. Her 12-year-old daughter, Marissa, hangs out with friends at a nearby deli for a short time after school two to three times a week, while on weekends she goes to the mall or movies, roller skates, plays basketball, or has sleepovers where they watch TV or listen to music on the music app Spotify. Using Instagram and Snapchat on their phones is the most common and frequent way her kids socialize with their friends.

7/27/17 11:14 AM

Her 16-year-old son, Matthew, uses social media the least, but works a lot and hangs out with his girlfriend, plays handball or football with his friends, and uses his bike or scooter occasionally for transportation purposes rather than socializing. Andrew, 19, plays games with friends on Xbox “until crazy hours” of the night, or goes to restaurants and diners in large groups of friends, according to Mrs. DeMorato. “I think the biggest difference is that with the technology and use of social media, everyone knows where everyone is, with who, and what they are doing,” Mrs. DeMorato said. Texting and using the Facetime app are daily socializing rituals for Christine McAlpin’s sons, who range in age from 12 to 20. But, they also use the social media platforms in addition to being active on sports teams at school, hanging out at fast-food restaurants, or friends’ houses to socialize. Matthew, 12, rides his bike a few times a week in his Richmondtown neighborhood and hangs out at his friends’ houses on the weekends. Timothy, 17, gets together at friends’ houses only a few times a month, while Donald, 20, visits friends’ houses when he’s home from college, she said. Meanwhile, technology leads other Staten Island teens to socialize on video gaming systems – which have options to communicate while wearing a headset, and play games live against friends and other gamers while online. For some, including Ms. Harkins’ son, this is a hardcore means of socializing. “It seems like it’s all the time that he is on his headset with his Xbox,” she said. “On a weekend when the weather is bad, he comes out of his room to eat and go to the bathroom.”

up to,” she added. They are more likely to text friends individually or in group texts, she said. “My children socialize mostly by going to someone’s house,” she added, where they play sports, watch a movie, play video games, or go swimming – mostly during summer vacation. They also participate in school clubs and organizations, such as sports and extra-curricular activities, like drama or Boy Scouts, or a pastime like bowling. While Staten Island teens are socializing through a balance of traditional activities and technological advancements, parents agree there should be a wider range and more affordable options here for teenagers so they can rely less on social media to supplement their free time and learn how to communicate and socialize face to face -- the old-fashioned way. Parents like Ms. Harkins, recalled their childhoods filled with many old-fashioned, creative, or simple, cost-free activities that built social skills, friendships, and memories. “There are not enough places for them to socialize without it costing money or looking like they are a gang of kids causing trouble,” McAlpin said. “When I was a teen, we walked far distances around the neighborhood and sat in front of each others’ houses,” she said. “Today my kids think it is crazy to walk far distances or hang out outside.” Ms. Bilotto agreed that socializing has taken on a whole new meaning thanks to social media and technology. “Some children are so connected to devices from such an early age, that they don’t even know how to have a conversation with someone,” Ms. Bilotto said. She grew up in Richmondtown where spending the afternoon running through the woods, or skating on ponds in the winter rivaled no other way of socializing.

Besides socializing through gaming systems, he Left to right: Nadia Beck, 13, Grymes Hills; Deanna Albano, 13, Castleton Corners; “No one really wanted also socializes in school, at Jordan Vuono, 14, Westerleigh; Lexi Carter, 15, Westerleigh; to be inside,” she said. the gym, on his cell phone Kaitlyn Lorentzen, 13, Port Richmond; Sam Jones, 15, Great Kills “There wasn’t a lot to do. using apps, like Facetime, or meeting friends at the mall or movies.“He’s a gym rat now, so he and ‘the If you were inside, you were listening to music, playing a game, or reading guys’ go almost every day after school,” she said. At the same time, he is a book.” “I think part of the problem today is that so many parents have to also a newly-licensed driver who is “constantly going out to grab something work and they don’t want their kids outside when they are not home,” Ms. to eat,” his mom said. During football season, her son meets at friends’ Bilotto explained. “It’s just not as safe anymore. Our parents weren’t afraid houses to watch their favorite team on TV – or play Xbox – depending on to let us out -- they wanted us out. We met up at the schoolyard; you knew when to be home,” she added. schoolwork. Virginia Bilotto said socializing through video games is the way her three sons interact with friends, and how many of their plans to get together are made. “They will be on the game and decide to go to someone’s house or to a movie,” said the Castleton Corners resident and mom to sons Michael, 20; Daniel, 16; and Matthew, 14.

A typical Friday and Saturday night for Ms. Harkins and her friends would include rollerskating in the street with a radio until the lights came on. “Unfortunately, most kids these days will never experience staying out until your name is called from the front steps of your house, where it echoed through the neighborhood,” Ms. Harkins said.

While her children, who also include daughter Jacqueline, 22, communicate and post on social media, they don’t use it often to actually socialize. “They do seem to use Snapchat a lot,” she said. “They may use other social media in an attempt to contact someone or see what friends are

By Staten Island writer Christine Albano, who is a mother of three teenagers who all socialize via Snapchat, and enjoy spending days at the beach in the summer. Her sons, 19 and 15, use Xbox, and PlayStation, and enjoy playing and watching sports; while her 13-year-old daughter enjoys hip-hop and lyrical dance, ice skating, and hanging out at the mall.

Answer: It always used to be thought that children should have a specific spot to do all their schoolwork. Some educators now think that it is a good idea for children to use different spots around the house, especially when they are studying for tests. The different environments seem to help them remember what they have been studying. This is especially true for older students. For routine homework, staying in a specific location works for most children. You and the children can equip one or more centers with essential supplies. The supplies can be placed in a bin, cabinet or desk so they are readily available. Young children like yours often like to do their work close to their parents, especially at the kitchen table while a meal is being prepared.

Since you are into crafts, you and the children could use some old boxes or containers with lids for supplies to create organizers that could be carried around and used in different places. The children could decorate the box or container with stickers or drawings. Then on the top, small cups (like ones for yogurt) could be glued. They could be used to store such small items as crayons, scissors, glue, markers and erasers. Larger items like pencils, rulers and even paper can be stored inside the box or container in smaller containers.

Helping Children Adjust to Earlier Bedtime for School Question: Is there an easy way to help

kids adjust to an earlier bedtime for school? All of us have been staying up until 10 or later. – Need More Sleep

Answer: It definitely takes some adjustment for children to get back into a good sleeping pattern after a summer of late nights! However, parents – with some pre-planning and getting started a few

7/24/17 11:25 AM

weeks before school starts – will be able to ease their children into a great sleep schedule. The National Sleep Foundation gave us these tips to help your children ease themselves into their best school-time sleep schedule: • About two weeks before school starts, work with your children to return to a school-appropriate sleep schedule. Every night, set an incrementally earlier bedtime, and every morning, an incrementally earlier wake-up time. Make sure that when school starts, they’ll wake up with the amount of sleep they need for their age group. • Once your child’s sleep schedule is established, stick with it! Even on weekends! • Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Before bedtime, start a “quiet time” to allow your child to unwind. Include relaxing activities, such as a bath and bedtime stories or reading time with older children. • Limit television, video games and other electronic distractions before bedtime. • Avoid big meals close to bedtime. • Avoid caffeinated products. • Maintain a peaceful bedroom environment. The sooner your children readjust to a school-time sleep schedule, the better they will feel during early morning classes.

How Preschools Teach Basic Skills to Children Question: My 3-year-old daughter is going off to preschool. How will the school go about teaching her the basic skills of reading, writing and math? – Curious

Answer: At this age, most preschools are teaching children the basic skills of reading, math and writing through many different fun activities and games. The instruction is not going to look like the more formal approach of kindergarten and first grade. The process of preparing young children to read is called “emergent literacy.” This involves the teacher reading aloud to the class and frequently stopping to ask a question like “What do you think will happen next?” The teacher will also have the children recite rhymes and poems and sing songs. Many objects in the classroom will be labeled so the children can begin to associate print with words. In addition, time will be spent in learning to recognize letters and their sounds. Math is far more than numbers. In order to build math skills, your daughter will be taught to count, sort, categorize and compare objects. She will practice counting daily on a classroom calendar, and she will manipulate objects of different shapes and colors as she builds with blocks. To be prepared to write, your daughter will have her fine motor skills developed through arts and crafts in preschool. She will do such things as paint, draw, color and glue. This will put her on the road to having the skill to use pencils and other writing instruments. The 3Rs are not the only skills your child will pick up in preschool. She is likely to be exposed to science through handling and even experimenting with objects in the classroom and playing outside. She will learn even more about science through toys like water and sand tables. And her early training in social studies will be devoted to picking up the social skills needed to function successfully in school.

using GPS to track your kid some tips for parents on tracking tech

Sooner or later, most parents lose a kid—usually for only a few minutes. A toddler figures out how to open an unlatched door. A kindergartener heads off to investigate something in another grocery aisle. A school-age child gets confused about the pick up location. Even if it’s brief, the experience is heart-stopping. And it’s given rise to a whole new industry--GPS tracking for kids. Some parents turn to GPS because the world seems scarier than it was when they were kids. Others want an electronic yenta who can keep an eye on children (and their caregivers) when parents can’t be there. Still others want a better way to supervise and enforce family rules about safety. For those who really can’t take care of themselves—very young children, kids with disabilities, even pets or elders with dementia—tracking devices may produce peace of mind. And, for children, that can be a problem. Experts point out that tracking devices can encourage both passivity and a false sense of security in children as well as parents. As parents find themselves counting on surveillance, they may be less intentional about helping kids anticipate and avoid risks. Instead of learning what they need to know to navigate confidently and safely in a risky world, kids depend on the panic button that summons Mom. That said, there are situations in which a tracker can be very useful—think amusement parks or kids who walk

to and from school. Before purchasing the technology, consider these questions: What does it do? Some trackers, like Trax, do nothing but show location. They can be attached to children, elders, pets, or even a laptop that tends to wander off. Many units resemble watches or function like flip phones. And some, like the Amby Gear Smartwatch, include games or virtual pets. For little kids, the extra bells and whistles may be distracting. For an older child, they may make the device more appealing. What’s the technology? Tracking units that use GPS depend on satellites and some provide coverage pretty much anywhere on the planet. Other devices use the cellphone network so they won’t work if the child wanders out of range. Still, other devices, like My Buddy Tag, use Bluetooth technology. Their reach is limited, though that may be just fine if you’re trying to keep tabs on a child in the backyard or your local park. The most accurate devices, like the Wherecom Kidfit, use a combination of technologies. What does it monitor? At the very least, a tracking device should pinpoint a child’s location. Some send a signal at intervals; others allow continuous tracking though that may drain the battery. Many units make it possible to set up safety zones or geofences and send an alert if the child goes beyond those boundaries.

7/24/17 10:50 AM

Is it complicated? For very young children, simplicity is a virtue. Tinitell, for example, is a band with a button. If a child pushes the button, the device calls preprogrammed numbers until someone picks up. Check the app as well as the device. If it has lots of features, be sure customer support is readily available. How long is the battery life? Even the best tracker won’t work if the battery is dead. Find out how long the battery lasts, how it has to be charged and whether there’s a low battery alert. Lineable, for example, is a simple, inexpensive wristband tracker with a battery that lasts an entire year.

Is the device secure? If you have to sign in to get information about your child’s location, it’s possible for other people to sign in too. What precautions has the company taken to prevent hacking? What kind of alerts will you get if there is a security breach? What kind of communication is possible? Some units have a big panic button a child can press. Some allow one-way communication. More expensive devices like the GizmoGadget, available from Verizon, provide two-way communication similar to a cellphone. Is it kid-proof? Some kids can handle delicate equipment and some can’t. Choose a GPS unit accordingly. Pocket Finder, for example, is built out of plastic that’s almost indestructible. The Korex Babysitter claims to be waterproof. Be sure the clasp on any band is secure and easy to use. Will your child wear it? Trackers like HereO feature bright colors that may appeal to a preschooler and are decidedly uncool in elementary school. Check bands to be sure they are flexible and won’t chafe. And think about how big the device is in relation to your child. Multi-feature devices may be too bulky for little wrists. How much does it cost? Tracking devices range from $40 to $200. Many devices also require a monthly service contract that can cost from $4 to $40 per month. Before signing with a new service, check your existing cellphone provider to see if they offer a better deal on a device. Are there special features for special kids? AngelSense is designed to provide extra layers of protection for children with special needs that make them more vulnerable. Doki lets parents schedule reminders or deactivate the distracting features of the watch when the kid is supposed to be concentrating on other things. Of course, by the time a child is old enough for a cellphone, the tracking question is moot. Cellphones are trackers with a variety of apps that will monitor where children are and what they are doing. For older kids, parents need to think carefully and talk frequently about the intersection between privacy and trust. Some kids may benefit from additional supervision, but parents must keep their eyes on the ultimate goal—raising children who are responsible and confident enough to make their own decisions about staying safe in a complicated world. That, of course, can be done without a tracking unit. For advice, consult these common sense tip sheets from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. feature / phone scams

can you hear me? “Yes” Scam Calls Increase The “Can You Hear Me?” scam that surfaced earlier this year is continuing and growing dramatically. This summer, hundreds of consumers are reporting “yes” scam calls to Scam Tracker, the online BBB tool for reporting and learning about trending scams. These reports show that the scammers’ methods have evolved. They are effectively getting consumers to say “yes” and to divulge personal and sensitive information that can be used to make unauthorized charges or commit identity theft - even when target consumers have already heard of the “can you hear me” scam.

Can you hear me?.indd 2

“If you answer the phone, say hello, but don’t say ‘yes’ without thinking first,” cautions Claire Rosenzweig, president and CEO of Better Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York, adding, “To help protect yourself and your identity, ask questions rather than give answers to unsolicited callers and when in doubt, just hang up.” Since April 1, 2017, over 1,500 “Say Yes” scam reports have been filed with BBB’s Scam Tracker in the United States. Some of the tactics that scammers have reportedly used to record the consumer saying “yes” include: • Asking simple questions such as “Is this the head of the household?” or asking to verify the answering person’s name – e.g., “Is this Mary?” • Offering prizes, trips or lottery winnings followed by questions attempting to get consumers to say “yes” • Claiming to represent an organization such as a bank, health insurance provider, or a charity in order to validate consumer data • Asking whether the caller has dialed a wrong number • Claiming that an auto warranty is expiring and asking if the consumer wants to renew • Calling the same person repeatedly, often from different phone numbers, and then asking if the consumer would like the calls to stop, or prompting the consumer to press “1” or “9” to verify a stop-calling request • Pretending to call about a survey, and posing a question designed to get a “yes” • Saying the call is about an order or delivery, and asking questions • Offering information about jobs and prompting the consumer to reply • Calling in the middle of the night with rapid-fire questions designed to get a “yes” from a drowsy person A few of the consumers posting instances of this scam have reported that their financial accounts were accessed by unauthorized parties after they experienced “yes” phone scam calls. Scammers may be able to use “yes” recordings to “cram” bogus charges onto bills, get unauthorized

access to financial accounts, or to commit fraud in other ways. In an interesting twist, several consumers report that they have received a “yes” scam call at a work number. Here are some suggestions from BBB Serving Metro New York: • Do not answer your phone if you don’t recognize the telephone number. If it’s a legitimate call, they’ll leave a message. • Hang up immediately if the caller asks any question designed to elicit a “yes.” • Do not press numbers such as 1 or 9 or say “yes” to be removed from their call list, or to reach a supervisor. • Do not confirm or give out personal, sensitive information including bank account and Social Security numbers, home address, etc. to any strangers who may call, even those purportedly representing a business. Often, a scammer will state some correct information such as a person’s first name or the last four digits of a Social Security number, and then ask to verify the complete information. • Never give in to pressure or threats. These are signs that the caller is probably a scammer. • Monitor your phone, credit card and other financial accounts for unauthorized charges, particularly if you accidentally answer “yes” during a suspect call. Report and challenge any unauthorized charges or account transactions in writing, as soon as you notice them. • Make a note of the scam call phone number and report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the Federal Communications Commission. • Ask your phone provider about blocking robocalls or unwelcome calls from the same number. Note that scam callers may place live calls and use spoofed or invented phone numbers. • Report the scam at bbb.org/scamtracker. dog days of summer Keeping Your Pet Safe in the Summer Heat Hot weather can bring on dangers that significantly affect your pet, including dehydration, heat stroke, sunburn and even death. With a few preventative measures, you can easily help your pup avoid the negative effects of the sun.

By now, we all know how to keep ourselves safe and cool during the warm summer season. But we can’t forget about Fido! Each summer, hundreds of dogs are harmed as a result of being left in hot cars or left outside without the proper water and protection.

• Pets Need Sunscreen. Cats and dogs can get sunburned too, especially if he/she has light-colored hair. Animal sunburns can cause the same problems as that of humans: peeling, redness and even cancer. As skin cancer in pets is a serious concern, purchasing pet-friendly sunscreen can go a long way in protecting the health of your pet when the heat kicks in. Places that are easy to forget, but prone to burning are: inside the nostrils, tip of nose, around your dog’s lips and the inside of ears for dogs with standup ears. • Summer Style. Giving your dog a lightweight summer haircut helps prevent overheating. Shave down to a one-inch length, but never to the skin, so your pet still has some protection from the sun. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. • Pets Need Extra Water...But don’t let them drink just anything. Give your dog extra water during the summer, but be sure not to leave the water out for too long. Change the water often to prevent your pet from getting sick from bacteria that can grow in hot water. Also, when dogs are thirsty, they are bound to drink something they shouldn’t. Puddles of what may look like water on the ground can actually be dangerous chemicals, so keep an eye out when your dog is looking for something to sip. • Make a Safe Splash. Do not leave pets unsupervised at the beach or around the pool – not all pets are good

swimmers. Introduce your pet to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. To remove salt from the fur, rinse your pet after swimming. • Pets at Outdoor Summer Events. Warm temperatures and outdoor fun go hand-in-hand, but when the temperatures hit record highs, refrain from taking your pet to crowded summer events like concerts or fairs. The loud noises and crowds, combined with the heat, can be stressful and dangerous for pets. • Exercising in the Heat. Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but show extra care to older and overweight pets that are more at risk from high temperatures. If you go for a run on the beach, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Extra caution should also be taken with short-nosed dogs, and those with thick coats. • Watch for Heatstroke. Dogs can develop heatstroke fairly quickly. Signs of this include excessive panting, staring, anxious facial expressions, warm skin, refusal to obey commands by owner, vomiting, collapse and rapid heartbeat. If you suspect that your pet is suffering from this, lower the animal’s body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of the body. Often the pet will respond after just a few minutes of cooling, only to falter again with his temperature soaring back up or falling to well below what is normal. If this happens, take the dog to the vet immediately – don’t try to solve this yourself. Provided by pet care experts at Camp Bow Wow www.campbowwowusa.com

feature / child etiquette

modern summer manners for kids summer is a great time to teach kids social etiquette 1. Keep the Dirt Outdoors: When coming back indoors from sunny adventures in the backyard, wipe shoes on the door mat, and leave crawly critter and mudpies outside. Parents, let kids know which toys are okay for inside, and which ones stay in the sandbox.

School may be out for the summer, but our kiddos can continue learning important lessons and life skills while they’re enjoying their vacation. With so much free time, parents may notice good manners need a refresher.

2. Magic Words: Remember to say please when asking, and thank you to whoever helps. Parents, model this behavior by using please and thanks when speaking with each other and others. 3. Playing Politely: Whether they’re battling dragons in the backyard, or building a spaceship from cardboard boxes, remind kiddos to take turns, share, and speak with kindness when playing with other children. When hosting playmates, have a few extra toys in the room so that no one’s left without something to do. 4. Keeping Covered: Summer temperatures are boiling, and children may be tempted to remove clothing to stay cool. Nevertheless, teach them that unless they’re at an informal gathering such as a pool party, shirt, shorts and shoes must stay on! 5. Take Turns Talking: While some kids may jump into conversation with stories of outdoor adventures or a question, remind them that interrupting is impolite. Encourage waiting until it’s their turn to speak.

68

Modern Manners.indd 2

6. Gracious Guests: Teach kids to be polite, gracious guests from the moment they knock on the door, until they say goodbye. Remind them that two to

three knocks is appropriate when visiting someone’s home, to greet hosts politely, and to wait for permission before playing or eating. 7. Impatient Eaters: From swimming in the pool to exploring neighborhood parks, kids often build up a big summer appetite. Although they may be ready to dig into dinner immediately, remind them to wait until everyone has been served before starting. This shows self-respect, and is a lifelong mannerly skill. 8. Adventurous Eaters: From brussels sprouts to sea bass, some food is pushed to the plate edge no matter what parents say. Encourage kids to try new foods, and experience the challenge simultaneously so that they observe you enjoying the dish. 9. Ask Permission: It’s easy for children to use their imagination and pretend the bookshelves are a mighty mountain to climb, or construct a blanket castle in the middle of the July 4th party. Before they jump into a big project, teach them to ask permission to use a living area for their next adventure. 10. Stay Safe: Teach kids to follow a trusted adult’s instructions, and to ask before leaving the play space. Basic rules such as not playing in the street, staying in a yard safe zone, and using a buddy system help make summer safe and sound. is it tattling or telling? Teach your kids when to report a broken rule “John just took my train! I had it first.” How many times do our children run up to us to share a grievance toward another child? Generally these complaints involve rules that have been broken. We spend a lot of time teaching our kids “the rules” — use your inside voice, share your toys with your friends, keep your hands to yourself, etc. The list goes on. It’s natural for a child (and even us adults) to want to call attention to perceived rule breaking, but “Do not tattle” can also become a new rule for your child to follow.

70

tattling or telling.indd 2

Why rules work. Rules are important because kids tend to be egocentric, focused on their own experiences and perspectives. It can be difficult for a young child to put himself in another child’s shoes and think about the way his actions affect that child. For this reason, it’s much more effective to tell your young son that he needs to let his friend have a turn using his toy rather than explaining to him that his friend is feeling disappointed because he’d like a turn. Even though your child may see that John is upset that he hasn’t had a chance to play with the toy, he will more easily understand that John should get a turn because sharing is the rule. So, until your child begins to develop empathy skills, guidance and rules are the most effective methods of keeping order.

Tattling can become one of those rules, even if it’s a tricky one to master. Why kids tattle. Rules work well with young children because their cognitive and moral development allows for mastering a set of simple instructions, and they are motivated to receive praise from adults for following them. For these reasons, kids usually believe it’s the right thing to do to tattle on kids who break the rules. Kids may even think that they are being helpful when they tattle, and might expect praise for it. Tattling is a natural response to learning about rules, but your child can learn that it is not necessary in every rule-breaking situation. Keep in mind too that sometimes children tattle for other reasons beyond rule breaking, such as getting attention from grownups or because they want

7/24/17 11:02 AM

a peer to get in trouble. This leads to a complicated situation: Children need an explicit rule not to tattle on other children … and an understanding that we do want them to report some rule violations to adults. We should always keep in mind how illogical this may seem to young children when we start thinking a child should intuitively know when to tell and when not to tattle. When is it tattling? A child who has been drilled to follow rules takes them very seriously, leading them to tattling on friends and siblings no matter how minor the misbehavior. However, there are some simple ways to help your child understand the difference between tattling and alerting a grownup when an important rule is being broken. 1. Understand the difference. Tattling is reporting a peer’s wrongdoing, when the situation is safe and the child can handle it herself. Telling is alerting adults that the situation is not safe and/or your child needs help managing the situation. Tattling to get a peer in trouble can be mean-spirited. Telling to protect a peer from harm is civic-minded or showing concern for others. 2. Give children tools and words. Children may be able to solve a minor problem themselves if they can identify the problem and use their words effectively to express their frustrations. As situations arise, help him or her figure out ways to approach a similar situation in the future. For example, if your child is being rushed at the water fountain, he can say, “It’s my turn” to the child who is being impatient. If someone calls his friend an unkind name, he can say, “That’s my friend. Don’t talk to him like that!” But if it keeps happening, or the bully is a bigger kid or is being scary, then it’s time to tell the teacher.

3. Give concrete examples. Tattling: “He touched my lunchbox!” Telling: “She took my lunch!” Tattling: “She took one of the blocks I wanted to use!” Telling: “He pushed the block tower on top of me!” In the tattling examples, neither scenario caused an unsafe situation and might have been solved if children used their words to talk through the problem. However, in both of the telling examples, there is potential for a harmful situation that would best be resolved by an adult – making sure each child was able to eat lunch and making sure no one was hurt from a falling block tower. 4. Give reminders. The first few times a child tattles, grownups should gently remind children of the difference between tattling and telling: tattling is not necessary, but telling is. “If someone is about to be hurt, tell me. If no one is being hurt, try to work it out among yourselves.” When children are young, tattling behavior can be effectively shaped by adults’ responses to the tattling. A child who tattles can be reminded that the perceived rule breaking harmed no one and to return to play, whereas a child who tells can be rewarded for looking out for his peers. As children get older and continue developing social skills, they’ll begin to use these social and problem-solving skills to avoid tattling, but also understand that being a good friend means involving adults when more help is needed. embracing your mom-bod How Women View Their Post-Childbirth Selves Drew Barrymore, after giving birth twice, described how “everything’s saggy and weird,” but also dismissed the Hollywood pressure to lose post-childbirth weight as “silly and ridiculous.”

Actress Jennifer Garner, a mother of three, once jokingly referred to the extra weight that childbirth left around her tummy as her “baby bump” and added almost proudly, “It’s not going anywhere.”

72 Mom Bod.indd 2

“Different women certainly react in different ways to the changes their bodies go through because of childbirth,” says Dr. Michael Burgdorf, M.D., MPH, a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder/president of Music City Plastic Surgery. “Some are fine with it because happiness shouldn’t be about how your body looks. It should come from within. But I do encounter women who have lost their self-confidence, worry that they are less desirable to their partners and describe feeling old before their time.” For women who yearn to return to their pre-pregnancy shape – or at least something approximating it – Dr. Burgdorf offers this advice: • Diet and exercise remain the first options. “You don’t have to train for a marathon in between diaper changes, but you can work some regular exercise into your life,” Dr. Burgdorf says. Don’t expect this to return you completely to the body you had before pregnancy, but you will be fitter and healthier. • A “mommy makeover” may be right for some women. Some mothers choose plastic surgery, including

procedures such as a tummy tuck, liposuction, breast augmentation and a breast lift. Some women feel this will improve their lives emotionally, but Dr. Burgdorf cautions that a mommy makeover isn’t magic (it won’t turn you into somebody else) and it won’t turn the clock back 20 years. • Don’t let others decide for you. Ultimately, it’s the woman’s opinion about her body that matters. For example, if your husband doesn’t like how you look and constantly criticizes your body, that’s a marital issue more than a plastic surgery issue, Dr. Burgdorf says. Surgery isn’t going to save a strained and unhealthy relationship. Often, though, women want the makeover and it’s husbands who are resistant because they worry about their wife’s safety. Dr. Burgdorf notes that anyone considering a mommy makeover should be careful about how they talk with their children about plastic surgery – and about their bodies. “As they grow up, we want kids to have a positive body image,” he says. “How their mom carries herself, how she responds to celebrities in popular media, and the language she uses to describe her own body have a strong impact on her children. Kids need to know that cosmetic surgery isn’t necessary to be attractive.” By Dr. Michael Burgdorf, M.D., MPH, author of The Mommy Makeover: Restoring Your Body After Childbirth (www.drmichaelburgdorf.com).
