A school for children with dyslexia is officially slated to open in fall of 2019. BP Oddo joined with literacy advocates recently to announce that Bridge Preparatory Charter School, which is designed for children with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities, was authorized to open by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. Bridge Prep will be the first public school of its kind in New York State and one of only a few nationwide. Go to

everything you need to know about your community Teacher Alert System Created by Local Mom It’s probably one of the most necessary inventions of our time. A Staten Island mom has developed an alert system for teachers in the classroom that can immediately notify the authorities in the event of an emergency. When Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio, a former CSI professor, realized there was no way for a teacher to quickly reach out for help, she decided to create one. She recruited two other Staten Island moms, Traci Cangiano and Patricia Carrasco to help her create the Teacher Alert System, or TAS, a wireless remote device that can be worn around the neck to provide a direct link to police, fire, ambulance, the principal, and other teachers in the school during an emergency situation. The device includes an “active shooter” button and connects to Wi-Fi, cellular, or satellite, ensuring a no-fail connection at all times. The TAS developers hope to see their device in every classroom throughout the country someday. We hope so too!
Free Trip for Cancer Patients Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with cancer? Cancer Tamer Foundation is hosting a white water rafting trip and offering a free ticket to anyone who has had cancer (while supplies last). The trip will take place on August 25 and is open to everyone 18 and over (including non-cancer patients). It includes a full day of fun: white water rafting adventure, lunch, transportation to and from Lehigh River Rafting in the Poconos, and BBQ at the end of the course. to collect backpacks and other supplies for children in our communities, so that they will have the essential tools they need to be successful students,” Minority Leader Matteo said. “I am grateful that my neighbors on Staten Island have made our school supply drive a success in past years, and I am confident they will once again step up to help.” Those who want to participate can bring a backpack filled with items that students will need for school. Each backpack of supplies should be geared for a specific grade bracket and labelled as such. The drive will last from July 16 through Labor Day - September 3. Supplies can be dropped off at Mateo’s district office, located 900 South Avenue, Suite 403, Staten Island between 9am and 5pm, Monday through Friday, or at the Teddy Atlas Foundation, at 543 Carey Avenue, Staten Island, between 10am-4pm, Monday through Friday. Each bag must be filled with specific supplies and be labelled with the form indicating the contents attached. Go to siparent.com for a list of contents for
each school grade.

New BP Assist App
Dave & Busters Opens in Staten Island
Borough President James Oddo recently announced the relaunch of his popular BP Assist app, a free tool which allows Staten Islanders to easily report quality-of-life issues through a mobile device. The upgraded app includes new features that make it even easier to report issues directly to the Borough President’s office. Those who already have the app will need to delete their current app and download the new one. BP Assist currently enables Staten Island residents and visitors to quickly report problems such as potholes, litter, and graffiti. Reports are instantly transmitted to the Borough President’s Help Line and then directed to the appropriate agency for action. Additionally, the app contains other resources, including important phone numbers, local news, an events calendar, and a link to the Visit Staten Island tourism website.
Fill a Backpack with Love It’s time to supply some back-to school love to local kids who need it most. Minority Leader Steven Matteo has teamed up with the Dr. Theodore A. when a bad spouse is still a good parent three tips for peaceful co-parenting
I had been divorced for a couple years when my former husband called with a surprise. Thankfully, it wasn’t the type of surprise he delivered the night he sat me at the table and told me he had been unfaithful for more than a decade and was leaving me for someone he met in Las Vegas.
10 co-parenting.indd 2

No, this surprise had to do with our twelve-year-old son. He said he was taking him to China for a vacation. I got that feeling you get when you walk in on a conversation and everyone is laughing and looking at you like you know what they’re talking about. China? How had this come about? I searched my memory for some mention of anything remotely Chinese on my son’s wish list. Had the two of them been to see the First Emperor’s Terracotta Warriors on display at the Field Museum? Or taken a school field trip to Chinatown that I didn’t know about? The only connection I could come up with was my son’s collection of Pokemon cards, but those are Japanese.
“Um….that would be cool, I guess,” I said, still processing the random nature of his declaration. By the time I gathered my thoughts enough to pose some questions and concerns, he announced that he had bought tickets to travel during a school week and over days that were technically mine on the parenting schedule. “I can’t change it,” he said. “If I do, I’ll have to pay $1,000 and I know you don’t want that.” What I didn’t want was to be told what to think or how to feel. An immediate, familiar pressure gripped my chest as I recalled all the activities and decisions that had already occurred behind my back. That he would plan something so extravagant for our son without discussing it with me felt too unfair. I was

feature / parenting already struggling with the realities of co-parenting our three children, still getting used to the myriad ways a divorced mom must learn to let go as she is eased out of her job. After college, I worked as a secretary in London for a few months and learned that, rather than firing people, workers are “made redundant.” It means the same thing, but sounds so much nicer. I’ve been made redundant as a mother—no longer needed or useful in all the ways I once was. This shows up in small ways: Tell me about your science project. I don’t want to talk about it. I told dad all about it. Want to see the new Marvel movie? Sorry, mom, we saw it with dad. Guess what? I got pizza for dinner! (A chorus of groans.) We had pizza two nights in a row with dad! And in big ways, like feeling helpless and broken during that stretch when my daughter called, in tears, begging to come home every time she was at her dad’s. Or having no words of comfort when my boys expressed their anger about their dad’s girlfriend moving in.

All of those impotent moments were triggered again by the thought of my son flying halfway around the world without me. I imagined him sleep-deprived and anxious from the long flight, wandering lost in a crowded street market, even starving, thanks to his finicky diet. Overprotective? Maybe. But once your trust in someone is so completely shattered, how do you patch enough of it together to cover some areas and not others? I believe my kids’ dad is, as a parent, loving and devoted. But I believed that about him as a husband, too, and I was wrong. I don’t blame myself for being guarded. I believe that any mother who has ever experienced betrayal would likely volunteer to go through it again rather than see her kids suffer a similar disappointment. At the same time, I have to be careful not to color my kids’ experiences with my disappointments. For me, this meant smiling while I packed a suitcase and waved bon voyage to my baby. It also meant feeling

feature / parenting genuine happiness when my baby returned unscathed, unperturbed, and a little more worldly. Yes, I have learned some wonderful lessons on this road back from betrayal. Here are the big three: Respond rather than react. One of the best
decisions I made, early in the divorce process, was to treat negotiations as business agreements and relegate them to emails rather than phone calls. That way I can take my time and formulate a clear-headed answer on my timeline. Reacting equals losing power. Responding equals reclaiming power. Have your facts straight. In the case of the China
trip, I assumed that my son couldn’t be taken out of the country without my permission. But when I checked our parenting agreement, I saw that my former husband only needed written permission from me the first twenty-four months following the divorce. Wow. That shocked me, but there it was, in black and white. Gathering the facts gave me time to gather my thoughts enough to get clear about my objections and whether they were ones I had a right to make. As galling as it is to have to follow rules with a rule-breaker who broke your heart, do it anyway. Come from a “well-fed” place. This is the juicy center, the meat inside the sandwich. Everything revolves around my ability to get quiet, tune into, and take responsibility for my inner world. What are my motivations? Is this about me or my kids? Am I fighting for the sake of fighting? Am I settling an old score? Am I bored, lonely, or craving drama? I need to look at whether I’m feeding myself what I need rather than entering into a “hungry” exchange with my former husband.

started using early on in this current drug epidemic. No one knew then how widespread the problem was or would become. No one expected it.
Find Help!
>> siparent.com/abuse
That’s probably why my parents turned a blind eye to it for so long. They were born in the 60s, so they were just kids during the drug-fueled flower child era. They understood experimentation, but addiction was another story. It was something that happened to other families. Not good people like us. My parents missed the warning signs, but there came a time when they couldn’t ignore my addiction. Parents today are more attuned to the issue, so they’re able to catch the problem sooner. This is immensely helpful to everyone. With early intervention, the addict can get treatment sooner, and everyone can begin to heal. If you’re sure your child is abusing drugs or alcohol, here’s what you can do: 1. Know that there’s hope Addiction is a terrible disease, but your child can get through this with your help. You all have a long and difficult road ahead, but his life isn’t over. It’s true that the decision to recover lies with him, regardless of age, but you are not powerless.
18
2. Start talking You may have danced around the issue before, but this conversation must be different. Before you talk, gather evidence of your child’s drug or alcohol abuse. This may mean going through her belongings and that’s okay. This is about keeping your kid safe.
august 2018
www.siparent.com
drug epidemic 11.indd 2
7/25/18 1:07 PM
Once you have the evidence, it’s time to give yourself a pep talk. This is not going to go well. Remind yourself that the eventual outcome is well worth these uncomfortable moments. When you start talking, she will likely react in anger. She’ll change the focus of the conversation to accuse you of distrust and invading
to get more involved. If nothing else, it sends the message that you care, and you’re willing to fight for him through addiction. Start by setting clear expectations. Let him know that you’re going to be monitoring for signs of drug or alcohol use. Set curfews and stick to them. Consequences are as important as expectations. Make sure he understands both. If he’ll be grounded for two weeks for missing curfew, let him know that. 4. Talk about treatment If your child is 18 or older, she must consent to treatment. You can put a younger teen into rehab without their consent, but first, give it some thought. It’s a great decision if you’re afraid her life is in danger. Otherwise, your child’s anger and resentment for the forced move may negate the benefits of treatment. Ideally, you’ll always want your child’s consent. If she isn’t quite ready, consider staging an intervention. Interventions can be extreme and emotional, and they have the biggest impact the first time around. This is why I always recommend hiring an intervention expert to help you make the most out of the moment. You should be able to get recommendations from any local rehab facility. 5. Remain vigilant If your child rejects help, you’ll inevitably feel a wave of hopelessness wash over you. But know that this isn’t the end. You’ve planted the seed. Now, he knows that he can go to you for help when he’s ready. Continue monitoring his behavior. If he is using drugs, free time is his enemy. Do what you can to keep him busy. And be prepared for backlash. Anything that stops him from using will make him angry. So if he’s angry, you’re probably doing it right.
her privacy. Do your best to remain calm. If things start getting ugly, walk away and continue the conversation later. Regardless of what she says or does, tell her that you love her and you’re going to help her get through this. 3. Step up your involvement
Throughout this journey, let your child know that you’re there for him. Do your best to remain calm, stay vigilant and have hope that he’ll come around eventually. Overcoming addiction is never easy, but it’s more manageable when families attack the problem together. Trevor is a freelance content writer and a recovering addict and alcoholic who has been clean and sober for over 5 years. Since his recovery began, he has enjoyed using his talent for words to help spread treatment resources, addiction awareness, and general health knowledge. In his free time, you can find him working with recovering addicts or outside enjoying about any type of fitness activity imaginable.

PROTECTING OUR FUTURE: Addressing School Security Challenges In America On Monday July 9, 2018, I had the honor and privilege of appearing before the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee to address School Security Challenges in America. I want to thank Chairman Rep. Daniel M. Donovan and Ranking Member Rep. Donald M. Payne Jr. for inviting me to participate in the discussion. The Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness and Communications field hearing was held at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Newark Campus. I highlighted the efforts Community Education Council 31 has made in advocating for greater security protocols. Our advocacy helped increase emergency drills, training, and grant opportunities for schools and districts throughout New York State. Community Education Council 31 has been advocating for greater security protocols for several years. In 2012 CEC 31 introduced a proposal -- titled Comprehensive School Safety and Security – which included: locking all doors; installing security cameras at main entrances to school buildings; improving School Building Response Team training; overhauling School Public Address systems, and incorporating retired police officers as special patrolmen to supplement school security. After discussing the proposal with our local, state and federal representatives the plan was introduced in state legislation and signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2014. The laws authorized the NYS Education Department to provide grant opportunities to schools to improve infrastructure security (ie. Replacing doors, installing cameras and other technology) for school buildings, mandating increased training for school emergency response teams and more frequent security drills. The law also allows school districts to hire retired police officers as School Resource Officers. In addition, in the same time period, DOJ authorized the use of civilian clothes school resource officers, which aligned with the CEC 31 plan. Until then, the federal grant opportunity only applied to uniformed school resource officers. Some have raised concerns that locking the front door may hinder emergency responders because they may not be able to access the building as quickly as possible. I believe the use of a “Key Fob” pass key or another similar technological access device could be utilized, allowing immediate entry for emergency responders. The FDNY has a similar system where they utilize a “Master Key” for elevator access across the city. It is important to remember that it is impossible to prevent all incidents, but we must continually try our best to limit the impact if an emergency occurs.
CEC 31 believes there are several other protocols and supplemental supports that can help school communities. Improving communication between agencies would be beneficial. The NYPD and DOE do a tremendous job protecting our schools, but like everything else there is always room for improvement. Having a regional “Fusion Center” model to monitor and track incidents and threats to schools could streamline information sharing to mitigate the possibility of missing an important trend or piece of information. Additionally, providing training and potential requirements at the federal level for school districts to report incidents of bullying, threats etc. as well as the disposition of all incident investigations could help identify students who may need additional support and/or counseling. Adding additional counselors to our schools would be a proactive step, but as I am sure you are aware that requires funding. Lastly, after a recent incident at a High School involving a potential threat with a firearm, we held a safety meeting with our elected officials as well as the DOE and NYPD. We spoke about the impact to response caused by parents and caregivers rushing to the school during the initial emergency. During that meeting we discussed incorporating a family staging area for individual school safety plans. This would coincide with an initial family notification that would include a staging area far enough away from the incident that could potentially reduce the hysteria and chaos resulting from social media posts and text messages. If possible could DHS consider incorporating a parent video and training piece advising parents to wait for a notification and only respond to officially designated staging areas? Additionally, if the current training doesn’t incorporate a piece recommending school communities establish staging areas to reduce traffic at the incident site, could it be added? The U.S. Department of Justice has $2 Billion dollars in grant opportunities related to improving security for schools and districts across the country. Far too often these funding opportunities are not publicized. During the hearing, my fellow panelists and I asserted the need for the federal and state governments to improve notification to stakeholders about any and all grant opportunities.

has your child been cut from a team? Turn the disappointment into something positive Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. We came across a Facebook post recently by a parent whose daughter had failed to make a team she had played on for several years. It’s not an experience that is foreign to us. There have been a number of unhappy cuts our family members have had to deal with. We know how painful they can be for the player and the parents. The player will feel rejected and hurt, and maybe even embarrassed. He or she will no longer share something with other children with whom they have become friends, and it can cause a divide in those friendships. The parents will probably hurt for their child and perhaps feel anger toward the individuals who made the decision. Also, sports teams become social connectors for parents, too. They will no doubt feel a void in their own lives, no
longer hanging out with their friends at the games and often at eateries afterward. How the parents handle the situation can be critical in whether or not the young athlete will continue to play the sport they love. The first thing parents shouldn’t do is use social media to vent their frustration. You may blame league or team politics, friendships, relationships and other factors, which might in fact be true, but it doesn’t help to voice your theories. Chances are your child isn’t seeing the posts, so why are you doing this? You may get sympathy from some friends, but you also run the risk of coming off as petty. It could ruin friendships. And it could turn off people who might consider adding your child to their team in the future.
7/24/18 1:22 PM
By no means have we always been perfect when handling these situations in our home, but we usually try to remind ourselves that, a) beauty is in the eye of the beholder and, b) you can control your own actions, but not those of the people who make the decisions. A little self-reflection wouldn’t hurt in these situations. Has your child missed lots of practices or games? Can they be seen as being disruptive at practice, perhaps interrupting when the coach is trying to teach an important skill or tactic? If so, that could have contributed to being left off the team, and there needs to be an attempt to make changes in those areas moving forward. But by all means encourage your child to continue playing the sport. It won’t be the last disappointment they face in their lives, so how they respond might help shape how they handle future disappointments. Find another team to try out for, and/or join a league where there are no tryouts needed to participate. It’s an opportunity to make new friends and perhaps find an even better situation. Attend instructional camps or sign up your child for individual lessons. An expert might offer a technique or method that helps your child improve in an area where he or she has been deficient or has struggled. Encourage your child to play and practice on his or her own. If the sport is basketball, it should be easy to find choose-up games in the park. If your child’s sport is baseball or softball, he or she can hit off a tee into a net in your yard, or throw the ball into a pitch-back. Get a net for him or her to kick the soccer ball into. Don’t be afraid to get out there yourself and play with your child, whether it’s catch or kicking around a soccer ball or whatever. As your child gets older, conditioning will come more into play, so encourage him or her to engage in fitness activities. Can they afford to lose a few pounds, or bulk up a little? Running, biking and swimming are great and easy forms of aerobic activity. Improving one’s endurance and strength could make a big difference. Being cut will obviously be a disappointment at first, but one door closing can mean another door opening. Walking through the new door could be the best thing that ever happens for your child.

back-to-school tips
These back-to-school tips from Crayola.com will make starting the new school year with your kids less stressful for everyone! • Use colorful schedules and charts to help ease morning routines. Encourage your kids to make personal decisions when possible. • Fresh new supplies give kids a fresh start to a new year of colorful learning and new friendships – the excitement kids feel while picking out new school supplies generates excitement about going into a new school year. • Start back-to-school shopping early. Shopping for new supplies gives parents the opportunity to talk about the new school year - guide kids to imagine their new classrooms, friends, teachers and subjects and establish a dialog for success before the year begins. Not waiting for the last minute means less stress, more options, and less running around from store to store. • Focus on the excitement of being “one year older” and “moving up a grade.” • Prepare for the changes to daily routines. Work with your kids to develop a chore chart that includes activities such as packing lunches, reviewing backpacks, and completing homework. • Create a homework center. Designate an area in the house (perhaps a corner of the kitchen or in your kids’ room) to be a place where the homework supplies are organized and ready to use. Add in a few special treats in the way of supplies that remain at home in the homework center. • Make mistakes less stressful by using erasable products. If kids are struggling with multiplication facts or need more practice with vocabulary or spelling words--select a small dry erase board and dry erase crayons so they can easily practice and erase, building these basic skills before taking a school test. • As summer is waning, remember to keep learning skills fresh to avoid eroding the learning from the prior year. After reading a book, have your kid draw a new cover that depicts a different ending and then tell their revised story. • If travel is part of your summer plans, have your kid draw a map of the places you’ll visit, calculate the miles, and sketch some sights along the way. Crayons and index cards make great travel postcards that your kid can create and mail from the road.

Question: Many of the teachers in our kids’ elementary school have banned fidget spinners. What about kids who use them to calm themselves? – No Spinners
While spinners may focus some students, they definitely distract others. Since it is very difficult to teach distracted students, the debate will continue as to whether fidget spinners can or should be used in the classroom. There are many other techniques that are less distracting that help students focus from chewing gum to squeezing a ball.
Answer: Just in case someone does not know what a fidget spinner is, it is a gadget with three weighted prongs that spin. This is not a new gadget, as it has been in existence since 1993. Today, however, stores cannot keep fidget spinners in stock. Now spinners are being marketed as a medical intervention that is helpful for students with ADHD, anxiety and autism. Individual student success is not the same as scientific research. However, now more scientific studies are coming out to support the benefits found for ADHD and autistic students. So, what is the problem with fidget spinners and why are they being banned from classrooms across America? Many educators feel fidget spinners are nothing more than a toy, distracting to other students and not needed by every student.
Question: My children play their music very loud. Is it possible that they could damage their hearing? – Concerned Answer: It is definitely possible that their hearing could be damaged if they frequently listen to music playing full blast. We spoke with Shari Eberts, a hearing health advocate, who told us that prolonged exposure to any sound at or above 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss. In addition, once your hearing is damaged, it is permanently impaired Loud noise exposure kills the delicate cells inside the cochlea of the inner ear, and once they are gone, they do not grow back. Loud noises can also
7/25/18 4:08 PM
cause tinnitus, the sensation of buzzing or ringing in your ears when no sound is present. While people know about concerts, there are other venues and activities that can be damaging to your children’s hearing that are not obvious. Restaurants, sporting events and even children’s parties are getting louder every day. Other venues on this list that you need to be aware of so you can protect yourself and your family from noise-induced hearing loss include: • Movies: One of the “Star Wars” movie boasted that it was the loudest movie on record. • Social events: Bar/bat mitzvahs and weddings can be heartwarming and fun, but also incredibly loud. Most bands and DJs set the volume at unsafe levels. • School events: The noise at some school programs like talent shows can be at unsafe levels. The good news is that noise-induced hearing loss is 100 percent preventable! You can protect yourself from unexpected noise by being aware of the risks and arriving prepared. Here are tips for protecting your hearing and your children’s when out and about: 1. Turn down the volume. If you have control of the volume, turn it down to a safe level. 2. Speak up. If you think the environment is too loud, ask for the volume to be lowered or to be moved to a quieter seat. 3. Move away from the sound. If you have a choice of seats, sit far away from the speakers. With distance comes safety. 4. Travel with earplugs. Carry earplugs with you in your backpack or purse. Be sure to bring extra to share with friends and family. Acoustic earplugs provide the best sound for music, but properly used cheaper pairs will also do the trick. 5. Use a decibel reader app. Most are not 100 percent accurate, but they will let you know if you are near or in the danger zone. 6. Vote with your feet. If a place is consistently too loud and will not adjust the volume level, don’t go there anymore. If enough people do this, change will eventually occur.
Question: I am concerned about the upcoming school year because my children missed so many days last year due to illnesses. How can I make this year a healthier one? – Missed too much Answer: Schools are definitely germ centers! And being absent from school can definitely hinder children’s academic success. One of the best germ fighters is to teach your children healthy habits at home to take to school with them. • They should be regularly washing their hands at home and at school because germs and bacteria are everywhere. This is an absolute must. • To avoid spreading anything to other children they should cough or sneeze into their upper arm by bending it at the elbow and raising it to cover their mouths. • Healthy eating is essential to good health. Help your children acquire good eating habits that include fresh fruit and vegetables at every meal. Pack lunches for them if they don’t like or eat school lunches. • Schedule doctor and dental visits before the school year starts.
