lightening the load Students at St. John Villa Academy High School are feeling a bit lighter this year thanks to the new full-digital environment adapted by their school. Instead of carrying heavy textbooks from room to room, all they now carry are their own iPads, which contain all their material electronically. nation with this unique comprehensive platform e-text learning environment from Pearson Education.” Junior Taylor Capoziello says, “The e-books now used at Saint John Villa are a great asset. It helps us all to study wherever we are because we always have access to our books. I really like working with the ebooks because it makes learning a lot more fun!” In addition to electronically accessing their textbooks using their own iPads, students have access to embedded videos, tutorials, note taking and highlighting capabilities, text to speech, language labs, and an extensive array of research and resource materials. According to senior Sarah Rampulla “The e-text books make it easier to take notes, access documents, and perform better in class. It makes learning more interesting and it is something fun for the whole school to learn and adjust to together.”

VISIT SANTA WITHOUT ALL THE TEARS
he holiday season means it's time once again for parents to take their youngsters to visit Santa Claus. Pictures with little boys and girls lining up in their dress clothes with Santa are a holiday tradition, and youngsters are often anxious for their chances to share their Christmas gift wishes with the jolly man in red.
T
But as integral as such photo sessions are to the holiday season, parents know they are one crying fit or meltdown away from having this tradition turn into trouble. After waiting in long lines to see Santa, it's understandable when everyone's patience starts to wear thin. The combination of antsy children and aggravated adults could set off a chain reaction that culminates in tear-stained cheeks and a sullied holiday memory. Pictures with Santa can go much more smoothly when you employ the following tips.
PREPARE KIDS AHEAD OF TIME AND YOU'RE SURE TO HAVE A "PICTURE PERFECT" VISIT.
Prep children. While kids may love the idea of Santa, youngsters face to face with a man in a red suit and a big, white beard may be nervous. Begin talking up Santa a few months before Christmas, mentioning how nice and friendly he is. Gauge how kids act around costumed performers at fairs, circuses and birthday parties and help them grow accustomed to people in costumes. If costumes elicit screams of horror, wait another year before seeing Santa.
Consider another venue. Many different places of business host events where kids can meet Santa. Families may be able to share a meal with Santa at a restaurant or visit him at a nursery while selecting Christmas trees. A different environment may be less intimidating to children and take the pressure off waiting in line in a busy mall.
8 2 e g a P e Se
Visit during off-peak hours. Weekends and evenings are the busiest times to visit Santa. This means long lines and longer wait times. Instead of dealing with the masses, try to get to the mall when the doors first open or during weekday dinnertime when the lines are shorter.

Go well-fed. There's little worse than waiting in line and doing so hungry. Hunger pangs can turn even the most placid child into a menace. Pack snacks to enjoy while waiting. Opt for items that will not stain lips and teeth or drip onto clothing.
Make it a family photo. Sometimes the only way to entice a little one to take a picture with Santa is to provide some added security. Dress your best and be prepared to have to step in and cozy up to Santa to ensure your child is all smiles.

It’s taken nearly 40 years, but Gela Mikalauskas finally has “the only job (she’s) ever wanted.” When she graduated from Kean College in 1977, she returned to her alma mater, Moore Catholic High School in Graniteville, and asked Fr. Thomas Bergin, the principal at the time, if there were any openings for teachers. “My dream job was to coach and be a phys ed teacher here at Moore,” recalled Mikalauskas. “He told me there was an opening for a biology teacher.” That not being a good fit, Mikalauskas spent the next 30-plus years building quite the resume. She served two long stints as women’s basketball coach at Wagner College, was an assistant athletic director at Wagner, and taught physical education at several Catholic grammar schools on the Island. She and husband, Greg, also raised their son Christopher, now 25, and daughter Anna, 21. Mikalauskas had planned to spend this year as a gym teacher at Our Lady Queen of Peace in New Dorp and St. Ann’s in Dongan Hills, as well as work as her nephew Mike Mazella’s volunteer assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team at Staten Island Academy. But out of the blue, in late September, she was asked to take over as athletic director and girls’ varsity basketball coach at Moore, where a widely reported scandal had resulted in those positions being vacant. “I was shocked,” she said. “That call was the last thing I expected.” It was the perfect move by the school, both from a public relations and practical standpoint. Mikalauskas is a skilled coach and educator; she’s accomplished, honest and a person of integrity. A true role model. Not only that, but — before there was Kyle McAlarney or Nick Doscher Jr. or Sue Harnett — there was Gela Mazzella, Moore’s first star athlete. With the Mavericks, she dazzled on the basketball court and starred on the softball field for four years. And by the time she was finished popping foul-line jumpers, dribbling through defenses and coming up with steals, she (with St. Peter’s Barbara Reali) was named the first high school girls’ sports all star on Staten Island. But she wasn’t sure she wanted the job. “It was the most difficult decision of my life,” she said. “I drove my husband crazy.” Finally she met with Moore Principal Robert Manisero at the school on a Sunday morning for a walk-through and Q&A. Manisero gave her the right answers, but it was the feeling she got walking the hallways that convinced her it was where she belonged. She decided to take the job. Two experiences in her early days back served as reminders of her connection to Moore. The first happened the second day of school, when a student told her he couldn’t open his locker. “What locker number?” she asked. “Number 103,” he said. That was her locker from September 1969 to June 1973.
Then, on the day the 8th-graders came in to take the TACHS exam, she registered a boy named Michael Travers. “There was a Mike Travers who taught here when I was a student,” she told him, referring to the dean, history teacher and first baseball coach at the school. “I know,” he said. “That was my grandfather.” She summed up the overall experience her first few weeks back with one word: “Wow.” Now she is settling in. On this day, she is running a Saturday afternoon practice with some varsity and junior varsity players. It’s obvious that she is in her element as a coach, and that the students respect her. “I want it to be fun,” she said. “The kids deserve to have what I had here.” She explains that she’s referring to the complete education package, not just sports. “Athletics is just a small part of a student’s life,” Mikalauskas said. “Parents are entrusting their children to us to help them to develop as a person, and academics should be the first priority.” She recognizes that parents are more involved in their kids’ athletic lives today than they were when she played at Moore. “We played our games at 4 o’clock and there were only students at the game,” she said. But that won’t change her philosophy or coaching style. “Kids should enjoy this experience,” Mikalauskas said. “It shouldn’t be about chasing a scholarship.” Being on a high school team, she said, should be about gaining the benefits athletics has to offer. “Learning that it’s about ‘us,’ not ‘you.’ That’s why you hope your kids get involved in athletics: to learn teamwork, integrity, hard work, respect for others,” she said. “Pulling for your teammates. And most of all, learning to stand on your own two feet.” As for whether the school will survive its recent turmoil, Mikalauskas said the students themselves have given her the answer. “They all tell me they love Moore,” she said. “That’s a great sign.” Joe LoVerde has been coaching youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s also a longtime newspaper editor and sportswriter.

ASK THE DOCTOR Sponsored by
When to Say Goodbye to Your Child’s Pediatrician It seems like only yesterday that you walked into the pediatrician's office carrying your newborn. And slowly a trusting relationship was built complete with late-night phone calls, last-minute appointments, and trustworthy advice. You probably feel as if your pediatrician is like a part of your family. So when the time comes for your child to transition into adult health care, it can be hard to say goodbye. This is a question all parents face: When is the right time for your child to move from a pediatrician to a family physician? When is it time to say so long to the Thomas the Tank Engine track in the waiting room, Highlights magazines, and the bright plastic chairs? It's an important decision that needs thought and planning. If done abruptly, this change can be overwhelming and anxiety-inducing for you and your child. But if you're both prepared and plan accordingly, it can be a smooth step on the path to adulthood. There is no set age for an adolescent to begin seeing a family physician; it depends on each individual adolescent and their parent’s comfort level. One way to gauge if an adolescent is ready is if they are able to communicate confidently and effectively with physicians, and want to begin taking an active role in making their health care decisions. Another indicator is when the teen begins to experience more adult-like health concerns. Or the teen simply feels uncomfortable sitting in a waiting room filled with small children and infants. A wonderful benefit is that the entire family now can begin building a relationship with their family physician. It can still feel like your child is visiting with a family friend. Young adults are developing their own personality, values and views. It is especially crucial for adolescents and teens to feel comfortable with their family physician, as well as have private time to discuss any emerging concerns. Young patients may start to have questions about sexuality or substance abuse. Since those are subjects they may not want to discuss in front of a parent, it is best for parents/guardians to step out for privacy. I explain to my young patients that everything they tell me is confidential unless it imposes a serious threat to themselves or someone else. I also encourage them to speak to their parents about what we have discussed. Maintaining well visits, even after moving on from a pediatrician, is extremely crucial at this point in your child’s life. According to the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, the five leading causes of death among teenagers include accidents, homicide, suicide, cancer, and heart disease. Some of these deaths may have been preventable. Well visits are the time to review safety concerns, such as making sure young patients always wear a seat belt and/or helmet, as well as potential risky behaviors. It is also when screening for depression, tobacco and substance abuse, as well as sexual concerns and practices should be done. A good physician should use this time to discuss the importance of forming healthy habits including eating right, daily exercise and proper rest which your child will hopefully continue well into adulthood. Well visits may also initiate the conversation for education, counseling, and preventative measures if needed. When looking for a doctor, be mindful if your child will be more comfortable with a male or female physician. An adolescent girl with a male physician or a boy with a female physician may become shy about being examined by a doctor of the opposite sex. Also take into consideration other qualities to look for in a doctor including someone who is open, non-judgmental and relatable to your child.
SMALL WORLD DENTAL OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES AND THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. Our child-friendly office is equipped with the latest and modern technology including digital radiography as well as TVs and toys for children to enjoy in our themed treatment rooms. Sedation is available in our office as well as in the hospital. Dr. Abhinav Sinha is also the Director of Children's Dental Center at NY Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell
Although parents or guardians are responsible for health care decisions for kids up to 18, in order to successfully transition, the adolescent should start to become involved in their own health care. Parents can begin the process by leaving the exam room to allow for private doctorpatient conversations. This provides an opportunity for the child to begin to advocate for themselves. Now is the time to teach your children healthy habits. The transition into adult healthcare won't happen overnight. Together with your doctor, you can help your child successfully begin to involve themselves in their health. By developing a healthy lifestyle at this age, young adults will be on the right track for leading strong and active lives well into adulthood.

I’m not sure how the holidays crept up on me so quickly, but alas they are here. The family grows and that is a beautiful thing but the question remains: What do you give when you have no idea what to give? If you are like me, I prefer to pick up gifts for the children and grandchildren throughout the year. As I travel or even locally, I inevitably find gifts that match personalities so I believe in stocking up before the pressure is on. Now though, with the holiday season upon us, it’s crunch time for the rest of the list. Instead of resorting to toys or expensive electronics, here are some ideas for more creative, memorable gifts from grandparents: Family membership to local learning institutions. Help promote your grandchildren's education through fun family experiences. We have so many cultural institutions and museums in Staten Island (including a zoo) that offer family memberships at a discounted price. Pick one and let your clan look forward to a year of visits. Custom Gift Cards. Create a gift card telling the kids that you'll take them, and perhaps a friend or two, to the next blockbuster movie they want to see. If you could, add a pre-movie pizza stop and a post movie ice cream. Present it in a festive box filled with their favorite movie snacks. This should work well with preteens but perhaps with older children a Broadway play or even a concert would be appreciated. Some of today’s teenagers do appreciate our old-school music. Diaper Delivery. If you have a grandbaby, a coupon redeemable for disposable diapers and wipes by the case will be greatly appreciated. Print out a certificate with Expect Delivery By ______ on it. Then you can order online through websites like Amazon, Toys R Us, or Target and have it sent directly to their home. Think Outside the Season. If your grandchildren like camping or hiking, pick up gear or gift certificates to stores that carry such equipment. Sleeping bags, backpacks, or camping gear are fun to use indoors as they wait for camping or hiking season. Being a grandparent shouldn’t only be about what you can give, it is also about what you can teach. Besides sharing your cooking or crafting skills at home, why not sign up for some craft lessons along with the children? Perhaps a cooking, flower arranging, or a craft class would be fun. A search online or the SIParent calendar of events will show you options to attend with the children. If you have talents such as playing an instrument or artistic abilities, consider setting up a time each week for private lessons. One of the greatest gifts you can give is to teach children to help others. As your grandchildren get older, their awareness of the world grows. Kids who express a passion for the environment should be exposed to the Greenbelt Conservancy here in Staten Island. The Greenbelt includes New York City’s largest remaining forest preserve, offering peace, quiet, and solitude. It is also home to wetlands, forests, meadows, and rolling hills that offer visitors a glimpse into the natural heritage of Staten Island. The Greenbelt is an extraordinary natural resource visited by over one million people annually with many opportunities to participate in events or volunteer. Check them out online at sigreenbelt.org During this season of giving, make it your responsibility as the elders to teach to give back, keeping these four simple rules in mind: • Be a Role Model • Start Small • Make It a Tradition • Make It Meaningful Life is Grand is the place for today’s generation of active, involved grandparents and seniors to get more smiles, have more fun, and create more memories during time they spend with their families. 8 WAYS TO DE-STRESS DURING THE HOLIDAYS
veryone knows that the holidays can be a stressful time of the year. There’s a lot of planning that goes on for family get-togethers, holiday parties, dinners, and even traveling. The conflicts that are bound to arise bring up mixed feelings and can lead to stress and anxiety. However, the holidays can also be a time to reflect on all of the good things you have in your life and enjoy spending time with your close friends and loved ones. If you’re prone to holiday stress, try following these eight tips:
E
1. Start early. One of the best ways to avoid holiday stress is to start planning early! This means making to-do lists, grocery lists, getting a head start on your gift shopping and more. When you wait until the last minute to do these things, that’s when the stress really gets to you. You can avoid all of that by just making a few lists early on and taking time to complete them a few tasks at a time instead of all at once.
DON’T LET STRESS TAKE THE JOY OUT OF THE HOLIDAYS. presents only for the kids, doing a Secret Santa/Yankee Swap for the adults, or even use your creativity to make some homemade gifts.
2. Take care of you. When you’re starting to feel overwhelmed by all of the tasks you have to do and by the idea that you will soon have to spend time entertaining your large, extended family, create some personal time to relax. Make time in your schedule to do whatever it is that makes you happy, whether it’s a day at the spa, snuggling under the covers and reading a good book, or enjoying a glass of wine before bed. Some solitary time is important and it’s good to indulge every once in a while.
4. Get some exercise. Getting active and doing some form of exercise does wonders for relieving stress. Even going for a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day can be extremely beneficial. Grab a neighbor or a friend to accompany you so you can talk while you’re on the move and you won’t even realize that what you’re doing is exercising. If possible, get the whole family involved in a family walk so they can all benefit from lower levels of stress.
3. Be up front financially. Money is another big factor in holiday stress since most people plan to buy presents for the family, cook dinner for a group, and even host big parties. The holidays are always a tough time financially and you shouldn’t spend money that you don’t have and can’t afford to be spending. If money is tight, create a strict budget for yourself and make sure to stick to it. Consider buying
5. Ask for help. If you’re the person in the family who is doing all of the planning, all of the cooking, and all of the shopping, you really should consider asking for help. No one can be expected to do so many things at once so learn to delegate tasks to others. Ask family members to each bring a different dish to dinner to relieve some of your cooking duties. Everyone should be doing his or her part to help out, even during clean up.

6. Gratitude. The holidays are really about spending quality time with your friends and family. It’s not about the presents, or the food, or the parties. We should feel grateful and happy for our health and for being surrounded by loved ones. These are lessons to pass on to your children and teach them to appreciate all of the little things in life that make us happy. 7. Watch the signs. Listen to your body. If you are noticing any of the following signs then it’s time to make changes: • Change in sleeping habits • Change in eating habits • Feeling irritable, moody and unhappy • Exhaustion and fatigue • Panic attack symptoms like dizziness, heavy chest, heart racing, headache, feeling nauseous, hot and cold flashes • Physical signs such as headaches, stomachaches, joint pain and low immune system - catching frequent colds and illnesses. These symptoms are all warning signs of too much stress and anxiety in our lives. This is a sign to slow down and take a time out. 8. Pay it forward. For the holidays, join a local charity and help with serving dinners, dropping off presents, and giving hugs. Every time we do a random act of kindness we help others while helping ourselves. Random acts of kindness give a boost of happiness that lasts 24-72 hours. Spread the joy! GROWING UP ONLINE by Carolyn Jabs
Reading Fast and Reading Slow Learning to read well is so important that the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests pediatricians “prescribe” reading aloud to parents of young children. For many parents, the question is how kids should be reading. Is reading on a new-fangled screen better or worse than reading an old-fashioned book? Researchers don’t yet have definitive answers, but it’s beginning to look as though reading in different formats presents different challenges and rewards. Kids have an advantage if they are comfortable with both print and pixels. In many ways, what’s happened to reading mirrors conversations about cooking that go on in many families. Often parents need to get supper on the table fast! And most people believe family life is enriched by setting aside time to linger over meals made from scratch. In our interactive world, reading also has a dual personality. The sheer quantity of information available online means children need to learn how to browse, skim and scan, zeroing in on key words and making use of links. At the same time, children also benefit from what’s being called “slow reading.” Total immersion in a text is both a source of pleasure and a way to cultivate deeper attention and better thinking. Here are suggestions about how to encourage both skills at every age:
Before age 5. Very young children are drawn to color and sound, so it’s no surprise that they reach for tablets and cellphones. Seek out apps that are responsive instead of passive, so kids become accustomed to the idea that they can control what happens on the screen. Research also suggests that there are measurable benefits from sharing traditional picture books with little ones. In one recent study, 35 year-old children understood more about a story when parents read from a paper book rather than an e-book. Researchers speculate that the kids– and their parents– got distracted by the options presented by the e-book, so they were less able to focus on content. Also, when parents read paper books, they were more likely to engage in what experts call “dialogic reading,” adding questions and asides that connect the story to the child’s experience.
Elementary School. Before they are competent readers, children enjoy playing interactive games. Research suggests that the selective attention required by games may actually teach kids to screen out distraction, making it easier for them to focus on other online tasks including reading.

Even after they can read independently, children still benefit from reading aloud with parents, so don’t give up prematurely on bedtime
stories. Reading together gives parents opportunities to ask questions that deepen a child’s connection to the text—what do you think will happen next? Why did the character choose to do something? How did another character feel? This is also a good age to encourage reading as a habit. Whenever possible, set aside 30 minutes a day for dedicated reading.
Middle school. Online reading requires much greater selfcontrol than a physical book, according to Julie Coiro, a researcher who has studied digital reading comprehension in middle-school students. Since pre-adolescents are so easily distracted, they may need help in structuring online homework so they don’t bounce endlessly between websites, games, social media and text messages. Talk to your child about tuning out e-noise when they read if only because schoolwork will be finished more quickly. Put the phone in airplane mode. Don’t click on extraneous links. Parents may also be dismayed to find that children who were avid readers in elementary school seem to lose interest in book in middle school. Don’t give up. Look for books that connect with special interests and explore the social situations that are often so perplexing to pre-adolescents. Give your children a chance to discover series books and graphic novels, poetry and photo essays, infographics and the novels behind the movies they love.
High school. Researchers are beginning to detect subtle differences in what people comprehend when they read on devices and on paper. For example, one study found that people who read online were able to recall facts but had a harder time writing an analysis of the material. Encourage your high school student to make more deliberate choices about how he or she wants to read by asking question about what works best. Is this an assignment that requires skimming or deep reading? When do you need to focus your attention? What’s the best way to do that? Whenever possible, point out opportunities for what Ralph Waldo Emerson called “creative reading” which depends upon “labor and invention.” Be sure teens have access to physical books they can annotate. Although some e-readers now offer this option, it can still be very satisfying to underline passages and jot notes in the margin of a beloved book. Introduce your child to the idea of keeping a reading journal to record private reflections as well as the possibility of sharing thoughts on social media sites devoted to books such as Riffle, Goodreads, and Shelfari. At every age, children are more likely to become proficient readers if they are surrounded by opportunities to read. Be sure your child has a library card so you can borrow physical as well as e-books. Pick up paperbacks at garage sales and download free books from websites like the Gutenberg Project. Most of all, don’t belittle one kind of reading at the expense of another. This is one case where the old song definitely rings true: “Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold!”

He had not been raised with all of the tools for turning opportunity into success, and he and his wife, Carol, determined to give their children a better chance to succeed. “I have heard it said that how your children turn out is a crap shoot. It’s a sad thing to believe that you have nothing to do with how successful your children will be as adults,” says Sposato, whose three sons are now happy, productive professionals. “Like just about all new parents, SIMPLE TIPS FOR RAISING WELL-ADJUSTED CHILDREN. we had no formal training on how to raise children when our first was • Get control of yourself or you’ll never be able to control your born. When telling them Here are four tips from Sposato for raising well-adjusted children: what is right and wrong, explain to them why that is so. • Start making necessary changes ASAP. It all starts in the womb; • Teach your children to question and reason for themselves. as soon as you know you’re pregnant, it’s time for both Mom and Dad Smart adults don’t simply accept the claims of others; they need reason to start adjusting their lifestyles for the baby. That means implementing and evidence to agree with any statement. Parents should emphasize a consistent routine and forming better habits. Resolutions to Help Improve Your Children’s Study Habits Parents: While 2014 is ending, this school year is not quite at the halfway point. You now probably have a very good idea of how the year is going for your children. So much of the success that children have in school is due to the study habits that they have. This is true whether they are just starting school or are in college. Bad study habits eventually can lead to poor performance in school. Why don't you have your children in fourth grade and beyond take the following quiz to see if they have any bad study habits? A "yes" answer to any question shows a problem or a potential problem area where you or they may wish to make a New Year's resolution to turn things around. One caution: If it appears that your children have several bad study habits, do not have them try to change too many of them with their resolutions. Just one or two resolutions may pay big dividends in improving their study habits. 1. Are you using Facebook or other social media while studying? If so, your grades are probably lower than those who concentrate on their school work. 2. Do you frequently copy classmates’ homework? Depending on classmates does not help you learn a subject. 3. Are you a procrastinator? Leaving everything to the last minute and cramming for tests may help you pass, but it does not lead to permanent learning of a subject. 4. Are you a negative thinker who does not believe that you can master certain subjects? If so, chances are you may never master those subjects. 5. Do you eat while you study? Fixing and consuming food may take too much time away from your studying. Instead, fix a small snack before your study session. 6. Do you try to get all of your studying done in one long study session? Short breaks can pay dividends. 7. Do you take frequent breaks while studying? Too many breaks indicate a short attention span. 8. Do you always study in the same place? The latest research shows that varying your study place is actually an effective way to study. 9. Do you do just enough studying to get by? Even if you are doing OK, you will learn more if you find an academic challenge. 10. Do you frequently study with groups of your friends? This can be an effective study habit, unless your study time is just fun with friends.
The Pros and Cons of Electronic Books in the Classroom Question: Now that we are in the age of electronic books, what are the pros and cons of using them in the classroom? Do they really help kids learn to read? -- Avid Reader Answer: There hasn't been a lot of investigation into the use of ebooks in the classroom. The features that really help children learn to read have not truly been identified. There are those with animated characters, just text, narration, games, and much more.

What has been observed is that ebooks can serve as a motivational force for children with a low level of interest in reading, especially when the ebooks have both narration and animation. Furthermore, ebooks have been shown to increase fluency when stories are read to students, as they hear proper intonation and pronunciation. They also have been effective as instructional tools when new vocabulary is introduced by the teacher before the story is read.

Question: How long should we stick with a tutor when little or no progress has been made over the past two months? – Wondering Answer: The big question is whether the teacher and tutor have been working together -talking about exactly the help your child needs. Talk with the teacher and find out if more time is needed for your child to bring up his or her work to grade level or if it could be time to find another tutor. Before making the decision to find a new tutor, consult with your child: Does he or she like working with the tutor? How helpful does the child feel the tutor has been?
HOLIDAY SPECIAL Complimentary Dental Exam (New patients only)
Some children may need a great deal of help in some subjects to catch up with the work being done in the classroom. In this case, progress will not be apparent immediately. Results of a good tutoring program should usually be seen in 10 to 20 weeks.

First Grader Having Trouble with Math Question: My first-grader is having a difficult time handling addition math facts even though she practices on drill sheets every night. I'm afraid that if she doesn't get it soon, her road ahead in math is going to be very rocky. -- A Math Problem Answer: It is early still to give up on your daughter getting addition. What she needs is a lot of practice with real objects. For example, to illustrate the math fact 3 + 2 = 5, show her three coins and ask her to put down two more. The next step is for her to count the coins to get the answer. Then she should write what she has done as the math fact 3 + 2 = 5. Once your child understands what addition does, she is ready to move on to using addition flash cards. If she can't solve a problem in three seconds, she should lay out the problem using coins or markers, or even count it out on her fingers or use a number line. Parents should send questions to dearteacher@dearteacher.com or ask them on the columnists’ website at www.dearteacher.com.

EMPHASIZE SAFETY WHEN BUYING GIFTS FOR CHILDREN
oys will once again be high on kids' wish lists this holiday season, when advertisements will highlight this year's most coveted gifts. But just because a particular toy is this year's must-have item does not mean it's the safest gift for kids of all ages.
T
No one wants to think about injuries or deaths involving kids, but holiday shoppers must keep safety in mind when purchasing children's gifts to safeguard youngsters from injury. Balloons. The CPSC notes that balloons are the leading cause of suffocation death in children. Children may swallow broken or uninflated balloons, which can then stick to the throat and airway, making it impossible to breathe. Holiday shoppers should avoid giving balloons to children age eight or younger. In addition, dispose of balloons if or when they deflate.
FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES TO PURCHASE A GIFT KIDS (AND PARENTS!) WILL LOVE.
Painted toys. Lead paints and toys containing lead are not legal in North America, but that doesn't mean that imported toys are made in adherence to stringent safety guidelines. Before buying a toy, confirm that it is lead-free, as exposure to lead can cause serious neurological problems, especially in young children. Button batteries. Button batteries, or the small-sized batteries found in some toys, watches and hearing aids, can be hazardous. Batteries can become stuck and cause chemical burns. Adults should always verify that the battery compartments on children's toys are secured with screws. Other products that have remote controls may contain batteries that are not adequately secured. In addition to button batteries, AAA batteries, which are small, can be hazardous to kids.

Magnets. Small magnets can be swallowed and become lodged in the digestive system of a child. If two or more magnets or a magnet and metal component are swallowed, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls. This can cause blockages, perforations and infections. Avoid toys that use small magnets, and check the CPSC website to ensure that magnetic toys are not among recalled products.
Toy Safety Tips · Read the packaging to ensure that toys are age-appropriate. · Avoid projectile toys or those with sharp points. · Store toys that belong to older children out of reach of younger kids. · Don't buy toys with removable parts that can be swallowed. · Only buy toys made from nontoxic materials. · Only buy fabric toys that are labeled as flame-resistant or flame-retardant. · Only buy stuffed toys that are washable. · Graciously decline hand-me-down toys that may not meet safety standards.

COVER STORY
6 Easy Ways to
CAPTURE HOLIDAY MEMORIES
The holidays are approaching and one small task that usually happens after the shopping, baking, and wrapping is to charge your camera. The plan is to keep it close by and snap lots of photos. We may have the best intentions for those photos, but for a lot of busy parents, memory book projects are put aside as we juggle everyday tasks. What if we tried capturing holiday memories in a way that engages friends and family and results in something tangible to share? Here are six ideas for capturing holiday memories that take the bulk of the responsibility off you and give you something to help you remember this holiday season.
Whichever idea you choose, it’s probably best to have a designated person assigned to request others to participate. That might be you or it might be your ten-year-old. However you do it, this year you can enjoy the process of capturing memories and appreciate the finished product for years to come.
Happy Holidays 1. Writing activity for kids. If you’re trying to keep the kids engaged during the holiday break, try writing about events and activities. Their experience will likely be very different from yours and it would be fun to have it captured in their own words to enjoy as they grow. Kids who like to share their work can write their own story and distribute it. It can be posted to a family website or blog, shared through a social media site, or printed and mailed to family and friends who were a part of the story.

2. Post a question on Facebook. Similar to writing an email, you could post a question about the holidays on Facebook. You may want to send it as a message to only specific friends and family, or you could post it on your home page and open it up to all of your Facebook friends. It’s unlikely you’ll receive lengthy responses here, but if you want short quotes to enhance another project, this is an easy way to get them. This capture method is another you could ask any of your kids on Facebook to spearhead. 3. Keep a holiday journal. Have you ever stayed in a rented cabin or house that leaves a notebook for guests to sign? This is like that. A blank book or notebook will do the job. Put the journal in a visible place at the start of the season and leave it available to write journal entries in throughout the holidays. Ask people to sign it at parties, sort of like signing a high school yearbook. They can write something about a specific celebration or share a seasonal story from their past. You can add to the same journal year after year and ultimately create a running written record of holiday activities. Reading entries from previous years with your loved ones will be an easy and fun way to rekindle the holiday spirit.
4 .Request a memory email. It can be nice to give friends and family members a little time to wind down from the busy holiday season. Send an email after the festivities and request an anecdote about their celebrations. If you want something more specific, send a short list of questions. Explain your intentions for the responses they send so they know where their story is going. Will you post them on a family blog? Will you create a PDF with photos and quotes to send out to everyone who participates? A little booklet can be created using a digital photo book tool or something as simple as a Word doc. 5. Interview with a video or audio recorder. This can be a great project for an older child. All you need is a video or audio recording device and a few questions to get the conversation started. Questions can be about celebrations, traditions, best childhood gift, favorite holiday food, music, stories, etc. If interviewing young children, ask what they are most excited about. The video or audio may be edited if you have the software and the inclination, or you could simply share it as is. It will be something that can be enjoyed for years to come.
6. Place a photo mat out for people to sign.
You’ve seen these before at weddings and baby showers. Try putting out a photo mat with a holiday inspired photo. Have this available at a party or open house. It provides a fun record of who came and a chance for guests to share a message of holiday cheer. You can hang it somewhere afterward as a reminder of a celebratory time.
By Sara Marchessault, an author, professor, and coach. She has maintained her personal journaling practice for 25 years. These days her journals are getting lots of stories about playing with her kids and the joys and challenges of being a mom.

NEWBORN PHOTO SESSIONS
Baby’s First Holiday Season
For many first-time moms and dads, the holidays are an exciting time to celebrate the arrival of a newborn baby. Baby’s first ornament dangles proudly from the tree, a brand new stocking joins its pals over the fireplace, and a tiny holiday outfit sits upon a hanger in the closet, waiting patiently to be worn on either Christmas Day, the first night of Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or New Year’s Eve. And of course, professional photos have been taken and holiday cards immediately mailed out to eager family and friends. Some parents even like to purchase gifts for their little ones. With some help, no one is ever too young to tear away wrapping paper. An inscribed bracelet or necklace from Mom and Dad would make a very special first Christmas or Hanukkah present that will be cherished for years to come.
But as much fun as new parents might have celebrating baby’s first holiday season, there’s no denying that their little bundle of joy probably has no idea what is going on. So here are some simple suggestions for celebrating the season with a newborn – in a way he or she might appreciate a bit more than a piece of jewelry. • Play soft holiday music at a low volume when putting the baby to sleep, or quietly hum a few songs while nursing or feeding him. Try slower songs like Silent Night or Silver Bells. • Babies love shiny objects, and your Christmas tree is full of them. Hold her in your arms, or face her rocker toward the tree, and let her gaze at the balls and ornaments. Better yet, hold the (non-breakable) ornaments up to her face for a closer look (newborns are very nearsighted). Menorah lights will also catch her attention.

FUN NEW YEAR'S EVE ACTIVITIES For Adults and Children Alike
ew Year's Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year, when friends and families gather to count down the waning moments of the year as they anticipate the fun times ahead in the year to come. While adults tend to look forward to New Year's Eve festivities more than children, there are ways parents can ring in the New Year with their kids.
N
Invite kids into the kitchen. New Year's Eve festivities often include food, so why not invite youngsters into the kitchen to cook alongside you? Kids may not be interested in preparing the main course, but let youngsters get involved when baking the night's more delectable treats, like cookies and cakes. Little ones can choose their favorite treats and then help Mom and Dad prepare those treats for guests coming over to join in the festivities. Decorate cakes and cookies with a New Year's Eve theme.
Happy New Year! MAKE MEMORIES RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE FAMILY.
Pick funny resolutions out of a hat. New Year's resolutions are a big part of the holiday, and families who want to add some fun to this tradition can sit down and write their own funny resolutions. Keep the resolutions you write down to yourself, place each person's ideas in a hat and then pick them out before the kids go to bed or right after the clock strikes midnight, whichever happens to come first.
Make predictions for the year to come. Another fun and wholesome New Year's Eve activity parents can enjoy with their children is making predictions for the year to come. Ask young sports fans to predict which teams will win championships in their respective leagues while encouraging other youngsters to share their predictions on awards shows or other popular social events for the coming year. Younger kids might not be able to make such specific predictions, so ask them to write down what they hope to see happen in the new year.
Make a New Year's pinata. Many people love to watch the ball drop from Time's Square in New York City on New Year's Eve. Celebrants can bring a taste of this beloved tradition into their own homes come New Year's Eve by creating a pinata that looks exactly like the ball in Time's Square. Fill the ball with treats and games for youngsters, who can take chances trying to break the pinata once the clock strikes midnight or earlier if they aren't likely to still be awake by the time the new year begins.
Ring in the new year under the stars. Families who spend the holidays in warm climates might want to forgo television countdowns in favor of spending the final hours of the year under the stars. A New Year's Eve camping trip is a great way for families to bond and spend time together at the end of what is often a hectic time of year. Instead of hoisting champagne or sparkling cider at the stroke of midnight, share some s'mores and hot chocolate around the campfire as everyone gazes up at the stars.

GIGI’S WORLD by Giavanna and Gina Schrecker
Reflections From Mommy This month marks the completion of 11 years sharing with “Gigi’s World” with you all! Since I was way too little for half of it, I’ll let Mom tell you more… I’ve been working on this column for Staten Island Parent since Gigi was 4 months old. Some of you may remember that we called it “Baby Gia’s World” back then. Excited about having a newborn and eager to write about our experiences (I’m a writer by trade), I presented our editor-in-chief Roselle with the idea of writing a column from the baby’s perspective. What followed were monthly tales of teething, potty training (too early), favorite cartoon characters, even the terror with which Gigi was fed french fries for the first time (I've always been deathly afraid of choking). “Gigi’s World” has recounted my daughter’s first steps, how I used to drive her around the block in order to get her to nap, the arrival of her sister, even the first great loss we suffered of our beloved dog Ollie. It’s also given me a shared bond with so many of you readers. When Gigi was younger, people used to recognize her – a lot! We’d be at the library, someone’s birthday party, the pediatrician’s office, walking in the stroller to Dunkin Donuts – wherever – and I’d get sideways stares until I’d finally hear, “Are you that baby from the magazine?” And then, an instant connection followed… your son or daughter was close in age to Gigi, you could relate to our stories, you had advice to relay, ideas to share, and more. With each new “Hello… are you that Gigi?” I was flattered, humbled, and inspired. Despite feeling like I would eventually run out of things to write about (“I’m afraid I’m boring you,” I’d tell those who came up to us to discuss the column), I went on to highlight awards and trophies, family vacations, silly times on play dates, and Gigi’s love for her family. The column has given me the opportunity to memorialize those moments you swear as a parent you’ll never forget — how she spent a year wearing only dresses; when she first learned to recite the Pledge of Allegiance; and that one movie she’d watch over and over again (ahhh, yes – “Madagascar”). Many of these seemingly indelible images of her early childhood had actually slipped my mind as my little girl started to grow into a young woman. On this, our 132nd installment of what’s now known as “Gigi’s World,” I’m so thankful for the privilege to share with all of you. Although some columns are tough to re-read, most notably the one where we share how our family lost Gigi’s Pop-Pop (my dad) on the same day as Gigi’s 10th birthday, I know that where my mind may no longer wish to go, my heart sometimes must. To be able to read and relive the journey our family has made since the wonderful day my Giavanna was born is yet another reassurance of why God gave me this talent. It’s a gift — one that has helped me heal when I was hurt, hope when I was discouraged, and remember those special moments of motherhood I had forgotten. I have to admit – I’ve sometimes dreaded these monthly deadlines over the years – "I’m running out of things to write," I’d often complain; "I have 70 other deadlines and now I have to do this?!" – yet now I see how very much I needed to write ... to cherish. I consider myself blessed that those words, sentences, paragraphs, and pages enable me to reflect upon the most important deadline of them all – being present as a mom.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
