LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Friends, The magic has begun! Actually, it started last month for many households. So how are you doing? Enjoying it or overwhelmed? If your schedule permits, a simple 20 minutes spent in meditation at the start of your day could make a significant change in how you cope with daily challenges and frustrations. It works for me. Let me know your experiences; I always enjoy hearing from you on our Facebook page. A word that you will find resonates throughout the holiday season is “gifts.” Although gift giving can be stressful, the most wonderful gifts we can give or receive are those that do not have a monetary value. These “priceless” gifts come in the form of those people in our lives whom we cherish and those who love and care about us, shortcomings and all. These are the true blessings of the season. Your holiday gift list most likely has the names of all these special people in your life—those who fill your days and make you grateful, regardless of your circumstances. Yet, tangible presents are important as well. It is the magical time of the year when we witness the sparkle in our children's eyes as they open a gift. We do hope that each child in Staten Island will have a gift to open. There are so many organizations whose goal is to make sure the children in families that are struggling have a reason to smile this season. We are so happy to be in our 25th year as the parenting resource in Staten Island and are truly grateful for the support the Staten Island Parent brand has enjoyed for generations. It is because you and families just like yours have believed in what we do, that Staten Island Parent is entrusted with providing the information you need to help raise your family. As a friendly reminder, we ask that you patronize our wonderful advertisers, who are the cornerstone that allows us to continue our mission in our Staten Island community. Well, it is time for me to start my holiday to-do list. Whether you pick up a copy of S.I. Parent magazine or read the digital issue online, please use our website, sign up for our Family of Friends emails, and connect with us via Facebook, Twitter, etc. YOU are OUR gift! On behalf of the Staten Island Parent team, I want to wish you all a very happy holiday season. See you on Facebook!

S.I. LIVING Community & School News
A guide to community events
December is a great month for “Family Time!” When planning your holiday celebrations, be sure to focus on what is really important to you. With daylight ending earlier, why not cozy up with the kids in the evening and play a board game, or break out the Wii and get some exercise? Don’t forget those less fortunate-- donate or volunteer. Involve the kids when you can. Even young children can fundraise for a cause. It’s all about giving back. Happy Holidays! Important December School News Thursday, December 12: Pre-K Non-Attendance Day Monday, December 23–Wednesday, January 1: Winter Recess
Cell Phones for Soldiers
AT&T and the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce have launched “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” a month-long drive where funds from recycled cell phones are used to buy prepaid phone cards for active-duty military members. Donations will be accepted until December 13. Old cell phones can be dropped into a bin marked “Helping Heroes Home” located in the front entrance lobby of the Chamber office at 130 Bay Street. Remember to remove SIM cards, erase data, and restore your device to factory settings before donating your phone.
Animal Shelter
Borough President James P. Molinaro, elected officials, City agency heads, and Animal Care & Control of NYC have teamed up to open a brand new Staten Island Animal Care Center, which will be the first and only City-funded animal shelter in the Borough. The new, state-of-the-art facility will be equipped to accommodate the approximately 2,400 homeless pets that arrive at the shelter each year. It is being designed for more

efficient operations. One wing will be dedicated to animal adoptions, with meet-and-greet rooms and large viewing stations. Surgical patients and animal intake will be separated from the adoption services. Molinaro and the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene have funded the $7.3 million construction of the shelter, located at 3139 Veterans Road West. Construction on the shelter will begin in January 2014 and will be completed by April 2015.
Video Game Ratings
Video game ratings aren’t a new thing but the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has started to distribute a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) that will further educate parents about the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) video game ratings and parental controls available on gaming devices. The PSA will be distributed to TV stations, video game consoles, video game websites, fan discussion websites, online stores, and mobile devices. “The PSA will reach millions of parents through our industry’s unique network of business and innovative technology platforms,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA. “Our industry has an unparalleled commitment to ensuring

Lighthouse Museum
The National Lighthouse Museum Board of Trustees is planning to open a National Lighthouse Museum at the old US Lighthouse “SUPER” Depot Site on Staten Island. They are hoping to open building #11 by the summer of 2014 and building #10 within the next five years. Funding of $350,000 is needed to develop and operate a successful museum on the site. To date, they are within $50,000 to complete the project. If you would like to make a donation, please visit lighthousemuseum.org.

In the past 30 years, the prevalence of childhood obesity has more than doubled among children ages 2-5 and has almost tripled among children ages 6-11 and adolescents 12-19. That is why the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) have teamed up to create EatPlayGrow: Creative Activities for a Healthy Start – a new health curriculum for children ages 2-5 and their parents. The curriculum combines the latest science and research from NIH with CMOM’s creative educational approach to teach kids and their parents how to make healthy living choices. The interactive and fun lessons use art-making, storytelling, music and movement activities to teach children about the importance of making positive choices that affect their health. The EatPlayGrow curriculum will be offered to any interested community organizations. It is also available for download; we have the link at siparent.com.

NEW YORK CITY HOLIDAY TOUR FOR FAMILIES
N
Photo courtesy of Tishman Speyer/photographer Bart Barlow
ew York is seemingly the center of the universe during the holiday season. It begins with Santa’s arrival in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and culminates with the dropping of the ball in Time’s Square on New Year’s Eve.
In between and into the first month of the year, New Yorkers, as well as a plethora of tourists, have the pleasure of enjoying the iconic holiday window displays in Manhattan– definitely an enjoyable trip for the whole family. New York City is a memorable town and one in which the time we spend with our children will become A WELL-PLANNED ROUTE ALONG MANHATTAN’S FIFTH AVENUE remembrances for a lifetime. WILL LEAD YOU TO THE ICONIC HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS. When you think back to your childhood and the wonderful family moments you remember fondly, most likely they are Fifth Avenue, where you can gaze upward to see the red and not elaborate or costly. Your next stop should be The New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue between 41st and 42nd Street. Take pictures of the two awesome, holidaywreathed kings of the jungle guarding the entrance. Trivia: The two lions, Patience and Fortitude, were named by Mayor LaGuardia in the 1930’s to denote qualities New Yorkers would need to cope with the Great Depression. Take the children into this majestic building and spend some quality time among the children’s collection. To find out what programs are offered the day of your planned visit, call 212-6210208 or visit online at nypl.org and search for the Children’s Center at 42nd Street, located in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. Don’t miss out on New York City’s classic example of Art Deco architecture. Stop and admire the iconic Chrysler Building at 42nd Street and Lexington Ave, constructed of steel with brick and stainless steel on the exterior. Large Christmas lights are strung from the spire down to the 58th floor where the gargoyles stare out. Trivia: Built from 1929-1930, the Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world at that time. It is 1,046 feet tall and has 77 floors. One year later, it was overtaken by the Empire State Building. If there is a little girl in your life, you will most likely be coaxed into visiting American Girl Place on 49th Street and Fifth Avenue. While it is quite a unique doll shopping experience with dining, a doll hair salon, photo studio and more, it is also pricey so be aware. Many of the features require reservations; there is also an online calendar of their special events. Strolling northward up Fifth Avenue you will reach a highpoint at about 51st Street. Here you will find yourselves in the fantastic triangle that forms Saks Fifth Avenue, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center. It is the perfect combination of extraor-
dinary shopping, religion, and lots of razzle-dazzle. Along with Saks’ elaborate holiday-themed windows, you will experience the magnificent twelve wire-sculpted angels playing six-foot long brass trumpets in Rockefeller Center. Probably the most popular tourist destination in Manhattan during Christmas is Rockefeller Center. The tentative date for the 30,000 light tree lighting ceremony is December 4th. Once lit, the tree is illuminated from 5:30 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. daily and for 24 hours on Christmas Day. Each year, more than 5.5 million people visit St. Patrick's Cathedral. The Cathedral holds the most popular Christmas Eve services in Manhattan. Attendance requires tickets in advance. There is also a Cathedral Concert on December 19th. For more information on these events, see www.saintpatrickscathedral.org. Following along this route, you will come to Cartier's on 52nd Street, offering an interactive window display. Last year’s window featured red boxes displaying shiny jewelry which window-shoppers could open and close by the movement of their hands. What fun will this year bring? On 56th Street is the elaborately decorated Trump Towers. Next on 57th Street, you will find Tiffany & Co. and lastly, Bergdorf Goodman and FAO Schwartz on 58th Street. Visitors to this “must-see” destination are greeted by a real-life toy soldier or other elaborately-costumed character at the door, and more toys than can fill your imagination inside! Be sure to try out some of the many unique items on display at the oldest toy store in the United States, founded in 1862. Trivia: FAO Schwartz was featured in the 1988 Tom Hanks’ film, Big. Tom danced on the store’s large floor piano. It was also featured in 1987 in Baby Boom and in 2011 in The Smurfs. Grand Army Plaza at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street is the gateway to

Sidewalks and Bells, Holiday Style
The bustling sidewalks of New York City feature vendors selling everything from phone cases to thousands of Christmas trees. Everything is bigger in the Big Apple where you will find oversized Christmas lights on display in Midtown West on the corner of 49th St. and Fifth Avenue. Trivia: According to the New York Times, selling Christmas trees on the sidewalks of Manhattan began in 1851. A Catskill woodsman recognized the demand for holiday greenery and rented a corner at Greenwich and Vesey Streets to sell his “mountain novelties.” The ringing bells and kettles of The Salvation Army have been a custom since 1890. The kettle was a symbol of good Christmas dinners, which The Salvation Army sought to provide. Today, the money goes to various social services as well. The Salvation Army reminds us of the miracle of Christmas through the joy of caring and sharing. Millions of dollars are donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless. The Salvation Army has also provided longterm services to Hurricane Sandy victims in our city.

TUTORING FOR YOUNG ATHLETES
Long before Jeanine Nunez became a star midfielder for the Staten Island Academy varsity soccer team, she was finding her legs for the sport as a 9-year old playing for Holy Child in the Staten Island Youth Soccer League. “She caught on to the game quick,” Jeanine’s dad, Anthony, recalled recently. “After a game, a referee came up to me and said she should play travel.” It was clear that Jeanine had talent, but like many young athletes who move up to face tougher competition, she found that she wasn’t the only good player. And after a few years, when the success she wanted for herself didn’t come fast enough, some frustration set in. “She was down on herself,” her dad said. Having never played soccer himself, Anthony didn’t have the knowledge to help his daughter reach the next level. So he did what a lot of parents of young athletes on Staten Island do these days: He reached out to a soccer trainer and inquired about private individual instruction for Jeanine. “She worked with the trainer all summer,” Anthony said, “and when she rejoined her team in the fall, Jeanine was blowing everybody away.”

Indeed, instructors are sprouting up across the borough for just about every sport children play. Some parents hope it leads to stardom; others hope it simply provides an opportunity for their kids to make their high school team. When Ed Jordon first brought his son Jesse, a junior on the New Dorp HS varsity baseball team, to an instructor in January 2011, it wasn’t because he was hoping he would develop into an elite athlete. “If a kid has some ability, the instruction is only going to make him better,” Ed said. “But the main thing is that everything has gotten so competitive, and you don’t want your kid left behind.” When Ed was his son’s age, he wouldn’t have considered lessons for himself. “The difference is we were always playing,” he said. “I played baseball every day in the park. And, even if I was by myself, I would throw the ball off the stoop.” And playing all the time helped him develop the skills he needed to compete.
But kids rarely play sports on their own these days. There are so many other activities to occupy them — many of which involve sitting down in front of a computer or TV screen. When I was considering signing up one of my own children for a fitness program, the director told me point blank: “If kids played outdoors, running and climbing the way they used to, you wouldn’t need us.” Baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, hockey — you name it, and you can find an instructor if you are willing to fork over the bucks. There are a lot of very good sports instructors on Staten Island; former college or even professional athletes who will impart their knowledge for a price. The same fitness program director I mentioned earlier once marveled about the willingness of parents on Staten Island to “pay thousands” to help their children improve on the athletic fields. One parent confided that she spent more than $1,500 in a year just on lessons for her child. But many do the same, feeling that they are investing in their children’s success and enjoyment. And while it’s a price many parents are willing to pay, it’s important to understand that, as they say on those TV advertisement disclaimers, results may vary. “The instruction definitely helped my son become a better player,” Ed Jordan said. “These guys played at a high level and are experts at spotting what a kid is doing wrong, and know how to help.” Anthony Nunez has been so happy with how the training has helped Jeanine — now a senior at SIA who is fielding offers from college coaches who would like her to bring her talents to their programs — that he now has her younger sister, 9-year-old Lauren, working with the same trainer. As he put it: “It has brought out the best in my daughter.” Which, after all, is what every parent wants. Joe LoVerde has paid for sports training for all four of his children — even though he has been coaching sports on Staten Island himself for some 40 years. He is a longtime sportswriter and newspaper editor.

Consider a timeshare. If you travel at the same time each year and want a designated place to stay without hassle, timeshares could be the ideal situation. A timeshare is typically an apartment in a resort property that is jointly owned by people who use it at different times. Sometimes it is possible to trade timeshares among others so that you can vary or upgrade where you stay. Still save with ski trips. If you're not jetting off to the tropics but in search of the perfect powder, land a deal by skiing at the beginning or end of the season. Also, keep track of the conditions at ski resorts. If the weather is questionable, you can probably book trips at a discount and avoid the crowds. Question: I can remember back to grade Improving school when I was scared to death of math. Children’s Basic In high school, I took the minimum number Skills and of math classes. And even today, I still avoid Addressing doing math as much as possible. My thirdgrader seems to be falling into the same Parental Concerns trap. How can I help her avoid math anxiety? -- No Math Expert
Answer: Believe it or not, research has now been done at Stanford University on the brain activity patterns of second- and third-graders who were stressed about math. The result was that their brains showed patterns similar to ones of people with other phobias while they performed math problems. The brains of the panicky children had increased activity in the regions associated with fear, and decreased activity in the regions involved in problem-solving. Now there is actual biological evidence of the existence of math anxiety.

Unfortunately, during the research study, the children with high math anxiety were less accurate and significantly slower at solving math problems than children with low math anxiety. This is important information, as children with math anxiety tend to avoid taking higher level math courses -- lessening their opportunity to enter many careers. And adults with life-long math anxiety may find it difficult to understand such things as mortgage rates and credit-card interest. Knowing that math anxiety is a real phobia gives hope that it may be treatable as other phobias. One way to help children avoid getting anxiety about math is to make sure that they have a firm understanding of math processes. Your child in third grade is probably involved in multiplication. Make sure that she clearly understands exactly what multiplication does. Other things that can help reduce your child's math anxiety include: making sure that she has a strong background in basic skills, having her solve easy math problems to gain confidence in her abilities and helping her learn stress-reduction techniques. Plus, the more comfortable your child becomes with numbers, the less stress she will encounter when dealing with math.
Child Wants Only “A” Grades Question: My daughter is scared to death of receiving any grade but an A in second grade. She thinks that she is a total failure if she does. We don't think that we have put any emphasis at all on grades. How can we help her get a better attitude toward grades? -- Worried Answer: Talk with the teacher about your daughter's attitude toward grades. Perhaps there could be fewer graded assignments
in this classroom. Just being made aware of the severity of this problem could help the teacher think of ways to handle it in the classroom. At home, talk about the fun things your child does at school and how much she has learned. When your child becomes upset about assignments that are not A's, point out how everyone learns from making mistakes. Is this worry about grades a new problem? If it also was a problem last year, your child could be exhibiting perfectionist tendencies. A chat with the school psychologist should give you solid advice about additional ways to help your child.
New Year’s Resolutions Parents: Disorganization works for some students and their families. Every school day, children rush around looking for permission slips to sign at the last minute, for gym clothes and for lunch money. While the household resembles a madhouse every morning and after school too, the disorganized children still might be doing well in school. But organization works far better for most families. It lets children leave for school from a calm environment, know that the routine every day will be the same and understand clearly what their responsibilities are. It also means no surprises. Tests are prepared for on time. Homework assignments are written down, and the necessary books and papers have been brought home. Project dates and even dental appointments are written down on calendars. Obviously, it is far easier for students in well-organized families to succeed in school.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES PRESCHOOL NYS Licensed Preschool Teachers
If you are organized, more than likely your children are too. Most families need to tweak their before- and after-school organization from time to time. Look over our list of the most essential elements of this type of organization. If you see any areas that are not as organized as they might be, make a New Year's resolution to change them. Here are some recommendations:
UNIVERSAL PRE-KINDERGARTEN FREE 1/2 day program available through NYC Board of Education
LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE CPSE EVALUATION SITE FEE FOR SERVICE
-- Resolve to have a routine to follow every morning. This includes definite times for getting up, eating breakfast and leaving for school. -- Resolve to have a homework system. Your children should use assignment pads and calendars and follow a fixed homework time schedule. -- Resolve to show your children how to keep their papers for each class in an organized fashion. Folders and binders handle this task efficiently. Schedule a weekly time to eliminate unnecessary papers. -- Resolve to have a definite place where backpacks and bookbags will be placed after school and after homework is completed. -- Resolve to have a system for handling lunches, permission slips and notes from the school. -- Resolve to give your children the responsibility of handling most of these tasks as soon as they are old enough to do so. When looking for the right place to set up your natural tree, it's best to choose a spot that's cool and free of drafts. Remember that natural trees are thirsty. Men and women who have never had a natural Christmas tree in the past might be surprised at just how thirsty natural trees get. The stand's reservoir should have lots of water, which should never dip below the stump. If the water dips below the stump, you might be forced to cut a little more off the bottom of the trunk to ensure the tree will make it through the holiday season. That can be a hassle once the tree has been decorated, so be sure to check the water in the reservoir at least once per day to maintain adequate water levels.

“Brrr Monica, is this the closest you could park?” Liam wanted to know as he walked with his cousins Monica and Philip. They were at the Mall to do some Christmas shopping and would be meeting Ryan and Erica, too. “We’ll be inside in a minute,” Monica advised as the Gifts for wind blew her hair and her words were puffs of cold air. Grandma “Yeah, we’re probably going to get too warm while we’re in the Mall,” Philip stated. “You are right. We are dressed for winter with layers. That’s what my mom always says- to dress in layers,” Liam offered. “Well, at least we can take our jackets off when we get too warm,” Philip said. “Although,” he said and laughed, “I need my mom here to carry my jacket. Since she is not here I’ll keep my jacket on, unless you feel like carrying my jacket for me, Monica?” Monica looked at Philip, smiled and said, “I think you’ll be fine with your jacket on but unbuttoned.” “Are we shopping first or are we eating first?” Liam asked Monica. “We’re meeting Erica and Ryan in the food court at 5:30 p.m.,” Monica answered. “Okay, then. Let’s go to the food court. I’m hungry,” Liam said. The three cousins found a table and sat down to wait for Erica and Ryan. Philip checked the time and said, “They should be here any minute.” And, Philip was right. As Liam turned around to see if they were coming, he did see them. “They’re here,” he said pointing in the direction of the center escalator. Monica and Philip turned in the direction Liam was pointing and they saw Erica and Ryan, too. “Hi, guys,” Erica called. “Brrr,” she said, “It is cold.” “Just what I said,” Liam said and asked, “Did you have to walk far from where you parked the car?” “Actually, yes we did. The Mall parking lot is quite crowded,” Erica answered. “Are we eating first?” Ryan wanted to know, “I’m starved,” he added. The five cousins looked at each other and laughed. Ryan said, “I know why I’m laughing. Why are you laughing?” Monica answered, “I think it is because we need a leader. So, let’s get something to eat and while we are eating we can discuss what to do next.” “Great idea, Monica. I always knew I had a very smart sister,” Erica said. “The next question is, what are we going to get to eat?” Liam asked. “You can get almost anything. Look around, there are quite a few places you can choose from,” Ryan offered. “I guess I asked the wrong question. What I mean is do we go by ourselves or should we go together?” “Liam, I’ll go with you. It is crowded and maybe some people will get in front of you,” Monica said. “Thanks, Monica,” Liam said smiling. “Philip, why don’t you come with me? I’ll go where they have French fries,” Ryan

suggested to his brother. “Sounds good to me,” Philip agreed. “I’m going to get sushi – but I’ll wait here at our table until some of you come back so no one takes our table,” Erica said. Within ten minutes, Liam and Monica were back with slices of pizza. They were followed by Philip and Ryan who came back with hamburgers and french fries. “Okay, Erica. Thanks for saving the table. It’s your turn now to go get your sushi,” Ryan said. In about another 20 minutes, all five cousins had finished eating and were looking to Erica to tell them where they were to go to buy the Christmas gift they had come to the Mall to get. “Okay, Erica. So where do we go from here?” Monica wanted to know. “Well, when we were at Grandma’s on Saturday she mentioned that she liked a floral bracelet that she saw in an article written about floral jewelry in a magazine,” Erica explained. “Okay, then. We are going to get Grandma that floral bracelet, right?” Philip asked. “Yes, that is what Grandma would like – but there is a catch,” Erica added. “What’s the catch?” asked Liam. Monica smiled and said, “I think I saw that article. You get to make your own bracelet.” Ryan looked at Monica and then Erica. “Oh, don’t tell me we have to make a bracelet.” “We have to pick out the different floral charms that we want in the bracelet. The people who own the store will put it together for us,” Erica answered. “So, are we ready to go and pick out the charms?” Liam asked. “Before we go, let’s make a list of the flowers Grandma likes. That way we can pick out the flower charms pretty quickly,” Monica advised. “How many flowers do we need?” Ryan asked. “I know Grandma likes roses, lilies and carnations,” Liam said. “How do you know that?” Philip asked. “Because those are the flowers she had on her dining room table,” Liam answered. Philip looked at Liam and said, “I didn’t know you knew about flowers.” Liam laughed, “I really don’t. I asked Grandma the names of the flowers in the vase.” “With that information, I think we are ready to go get Grandma’s gift.” Erica said.

The goal is to create a diverse environment where every student can learn with respect to his or her unique and individual learning style. How Does Differentiated Instruction Benefit the Student? Every student thinks, learns, and creates in different ways. How students learn is just as important as what they learn. Incorporating differentiated instruction can amplify their intelligences. Ho-Ho Hanukkah! How To Balance Hanukkah and Christmas Celebrations
ou don’t have to be an interfaith family to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas each year. Any family can choose to celebrate whichever holiday traditions they wish. Holiday joy can be doubled, rather than halved, when you choose to light the menorah and decorate the Christmas tree to honor the cultural and religious traditions of both parents.
Y
Fun Holiday Family Reads: Hanukkah:
• Hanukkah! by Roni Schotter and Marilyn Hafner • Lots Of Latkes, A Hanukkah Story by Sandy Lanton and Vicki Jo Redenbaugh • When Mindy Saved Hanukkah by Eric Kimmel • It’s A Miracle! A Hanukkah Storybook by Stephanie Spinner and Jill McElmurry Christmas:
So forget the “December Dilemma.” When it comes to religion, families increasingly run the Judeo-Christian gamut. In our family, we have Orthodox Jews on one side of the family tree and Bornagain Christians on the other side. But my husband and I both share the same beliefs about diversity, tolerance, and spirituality. And that’s what we intend to pass on to our daughter.
• The Christmas Story by Jane Werner Watson and Eloise Wilkin • ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas or Account Of A Visit From St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore • How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss • The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
As a woman who was raised Catholic and has been happily married to a Jewish man for the past thirteen years, I can attest that once you become the parent in an interfaith family, you quickly become accustomed to not being able to please everyone. But since the wisdom of your hearts brought you and your partner together in the first place, why not call on that same source of wisdom to guide you through creating your own version of happy holidays?
Celebrating Both:
Here are a few tips based on what our family has learned from holding the middle ground over the years: Talk To Each Other First & Last. The bottom line on family celebrations, holiday or otherwise, is to always do whatever you and your spouse deem best for your family. The only way to come to an understanding about what this means is to discuss it with each other first and last. Be prepared for this to be an ongoing conversation, and probably one that you revisit each year. Protect Your Joint Point Of View. Never let bossy or opinionated family members horn in on conversations that rightly belong between you and your partner. You only have one spouse, and that’s
• My Two Holidays, A Hanukkah and Christmas Story by Danielle Novack and Phyllis Harris • Light The Lights, A Story About Celebrating Hanukkah and Christmas by Margaret Moorman • Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama by Selina Alko the person whose opinion you should value most. Your kids come next and the grandparents after them. Don’t treat your parents like children or allow them to treat you like a child. This behavior will only create conflicts between you and your spouse. Ignore Disapproving Outsiders. Never apologize for being an interfaith family, even if people in your extended family or circle of close friends do not approve of your union. You are not seeking their permission—as Perchick expressed so boldly in Fiddler On The Roof—you are asking for their blessing. Creating harmonious and joyful dual holidays in your own
home is your parental right and your familial duty, even if it means agreeing to disagree with certain members of your extended family. Stick To Separate But Equal. Christmas may be more common and commercial than Hanukkah, but don’t let that trump your holiday fun. The nice thing about Hanukkah is that it lasts for eight nights. Light the menorah candles and say the Hanukkah prayer every night, if you possibly can. You may be amazed at how moving and inspiring such simple rituals can be, even on busy school nights. Look for the quieter, more awe-inspiring moments in Christmas as well, such as ending the day admiring the beauty of the decorated tree and window lights. Keep Both Sets Of Traditions. At our house, we celebrate as much of both traditions as we can, without a worry about whether the holidays overlap or not. For me, this means the Christmas tree, the presents, the cookies, the big dinner. For my husband this means lighting two menorahs for eight nights (one for him and one for my daughter), having our daughter’s friends over for potato latkes and some lively dreidel games. Don’t Double Your Gift Budget. We make an effort to celebrate the bounty of two holidays without going overboard. If you are an interfaith family, your kids’ friends may consider them “lucky” because they assume that they get double the gifts every holiday season. However, that’s not
necessarily the case at our house. Our daughter typically gets a little present on the first day of Hanukkah and a bigger present on the last day of Hanukkah. One set of grandparents send a couple of little Hanukkah gifts and a check and the other sends a couple of stocking stuffers and a check. The amount of gifts she receives is essentially the same as it would be if we only celebrated one holiday. Share The Love. Another thing we enjoy about dual holidays is that our daughter can share traditions about both holidays with her friends, no matter what religion they follow, exposing them to a culture they may not have had the opportunity to learn about. Participate Wisely. When invited to join a new or old tradition on either side of the family, give the ritual a chance. We will try just about anything once. But we reserve the right to say no to pressure or anything that makes us uncomfortable. Maintaining an atmosphere where you can say yes or no to your parents without stern chastisement may not come easily in your extended family system. But start trying it, or you’ll never get there. Honor The Choices Of Others. We don’t try to protect our family members from our choices. They need to be exposed to what we value, if we expect them to understand and accept our choices. However, we also try to respect the choices that each of our family members make without imposing our life choices on them. The Jewish families get Happy Hanukkah cards and the Christian families get Christmas cards. When we cross over, we go with “Happy Holidays.” By Christina Katz, who loves celebrating the holidays with her family and friends. Each year her family enjoys exchanging ornaments for the tree and inviting a new group of friends over to play the dreidel game and enjoy potato latkes.

What one item (excluding a crib, changing table, car seat, high chair and stroller) of baby equipment did you find most helpful? Most innovative?
COMMENTS:
Sophia Makras Caputo: Boppy pillow! More than one use/purpose! Loved it!
Lisa Cartolano: The bunting that goes in the car seat so you don't need a snowsuit or cot on the baby!!! The best invention ever!!
Trina DiLorenzo: Exersaucer, they come with toys all around, they can jump/bounce up & down and it builds strength in their legs to help them start standing/walking. My son started walking a little before 9 months. Debbie Antoniello: The baby swing...now mind you, my son is 35, but when he was an infant we went shopping for baby furniture and he was very fussy...the salesperson said, “Let’s try him in a swing so your hands aren't full of fussy baby.” I didn't buy any furniture that day, but I went home with the swing....it worked wonders!

HOLIDAYS DON’T FEEL JOYFUL
L
aughter filled the house. Thankful to have my parents in town, we feasted on delicious food and good company. But then I noticed my teen-age stepson's face. I knew he was having a hard day. Holidays would never be the same for him after losing his mother to cancer. I imagined how he must feel it didn't seem fair. My parents were approaching 80 years old and we enjoyed long days and rich company together. My stepson would never have those days with his mom again. Not all holiday seasons are joyful. The year we learned my husband's job would end after CIRCUMSTANCES CAN CREATE LESS-THAN-JOYFUL HOLIDAYS the first of the year was a tough FOR CHILDREN AS WELL AS ADULTS. season. I didn't care about 1. Give you or your child permission to grieve. Don't act as if celebrating and the expense of gift-giving when our money nothing's happened and try to go along with the celebration of supply was about to end created perpetual stress. I spent most of the season. Don't expect your child to stuff his feelings and carry my time avoiding those with holiday cheer that year. out normal traditions. When we see others celebrating the joy of the season, memories flood our heart, reminding us of the tragedy we want to forget. If you or your child is grieving this holiday season, don't deny your feelings. The first season following a loss or life-altering tragedy will be particularly difficult. But that doesn't mean you must isolate yourself to make it through. Here are a few suggestions to help cope with the feelings that accompany difficult circumstances affecting the holiday season.

2. Offer grace freely. The first year after my stepson lost his mother in August, I anticipated a rocky holiday. But what I didn't anticipate was how difficult the next year, and the next year, and the next would be. I learned to allow him the freedom to go along with family celebrations if he wanted to, or retreat to his room when he needed. I didn't take it personally when he chose to withdraw into himself or lash out on days I was especially cheery. Offering him the gift of grace was the best gift anyone could give him during that time.

3. Cherish the good days. There will be good days and bad, high times and low. Embrace the good days and celebrate the season. Choose your favorite holiday festivity and make time to enjoy it. Don't wait! You might not have many joy-filled moments but the ones you do have can help carry you through the hard ones. If you notice your grieffilled child having a good day, suggest a special activity or ask what he or she would like to do to celebrate the season. Don't let the good days slip by without intentional effort toward a festive activity, even if it's as simple as making holiday cookies. 4. Don't overextend yourself or your child. Leave your options open so you can attend the Christmas party or other celebration if you feel like it that day, or stay home without obligation. Be sensitive to whether your child wants to participate when friends invite him over or ask him to join their party. Unstable emotions create tension-filled days that are best spent at home, surrounded by those you love. 5. Remember: there will be better days ahead. When you want to bury your head in your bed covers, remind yourself there's hope for a new tomorrow. Hard times don't last forever, and time helps heal our wounds. Look forward to fresh beginnings as a new year approaches. As I write this article, a sweet friend posted grieving remarks on her Facebook page. "Tomorrow will be the first anniversary of my husband's death. I'm scared of tomorrow. I don't want it to be a year. I was amazingly lucky to have him as long as I did and I AM thankful for that. However, I'm jealous of old couples in the grocery store. That was supposed to be us. But it's not. And it hurts like a branding iron on my heart." Difficult circumstances create hard times for us and our children that become magnified at the holidays. We may not always feel joyful during the season. But with the right attitude and resolve to make it through, we can seek to find joyful moments this holiday season that will carry us into a new year with new beginnings and better days ahead. Gayla Grace is a freelance journalist, wife, mom and stepmom to five children who treasures joy-filled holidays.

GROWING UP ONLINE by Carolyn Jabs
It was probably inevitable. Now that 70% of teens are friends with their parents on Facebook, some are looking for less supervised places to socialize. A recent report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that even though most WHICH teens feel obligated to maintain a presence on Facebook, many expressed “waning SOCIAL APPS enthusiasm”. Their reasons? The site has ARE YOUR TEENS been “colonized” by adults, and there’s too much drama. “Teens are looking for a place USING? they can call their own,” observes Danah Boyd, a fellow at the Berkman Center for the Internet and Society at Harvard University. “Rather than all flocking en masse to a different site, they’re fragmenting across apps.” Having teens on a variety of social media apps (see box) makes supervision more difficult. The classic advice—“keep the computer in a public space”—is hopelessly quaint, especially for teens who socialize on cellphones. One response is to use monitoring software that will alert parents anytime a child sends or receives a message that’s inappropriate. (Ten of these programs are reviewed by Mobile Independent Phone Reviews at mirereview.com.) Although surveillance may be a good short term fix for some kids, it can obscure the long-term goal—raising kids who use good judgment about social media. These kids resist the temptation to behave poorly just because they are online, and they know how to protect themselves when they encounter bullies, trolls and other online predators. How do you equip your child with those essential life skills? Here are a few suggestions: Limit social networking of any kind for middle school students. Pre-adolescents are learning how to manage relationships and the process isn’t always pretty. Middle school kids are very aware of themselves and not very aware of others. Even the nicest kids say mean things-- and are devastated if someone says something mean to them. Being part of social media compounds the damage by making clumsy comments, ill-advised fashion choices and failed attempts at humor permanent and more widely available. Check the apps on your child’s phone. Review the apps on your child’s phone every time you pay the phone bill. Ask questions that will help your child think critically about social apps: How did you find out about the app? Does it do what you want it to do? What information does it collect about you? Does it broadcast your location? How much time do you spend with it? How could it be improved? What kind of community does it create?

Be aware of the link between social media and self esteem. For many young people, social media intensifies the pressure to be popular. They may obsess about how many followers they have, how many likes a particular post attracts or parties they didn’t attend. Parents can’t micromanage this part of a child’s life—teens learn by making social
mistakes. At the same time, they can buffer the impact of social media by giving kids plenty of positive attention, supporting healthy off-line friendships and pointing out the limited shelf life of popularity. Teach self-protection strategies. Talk to your child about how they can respond to mean or crude comments with tactics similar to those they would use offline. If possible, ignore bad behavior. The other person may just be having a really terrible day. Don’t respond in kind because that is likely to escalate the problem. Whenever possible, use humor to defuse conflict. Take advantage of privacy settings to block people who are always mean or negative. If a post is threatening, save a copy and share it with a trusted adult. Be sure your child knows you have his back. Many teens don’t talk to their parents about social media problems for fear that parents will overreact. Let your children know that you have confidence in them to handle most situations but you want to know about any online interactions that feel scary or overwhelming. If a child comes to you with an online problem, resist the urge to take charge. Instead, help your child think through how he or she wants to handle the situation. What is motivating the person who is causing the problem? Is this a relationship that matters to your child? Does he or she have offline contact with the person? Most important, listen! When you think about it, the social skills young people need to succeed with social media aren’t all that different from the ones that they will need in the offline world. As a parent, you can help your children stay focused on the big picture—what kind of people do they want to be and what kind of friends will support them in becoming those people? For kids who keep those goals clearly in mind, the particular app they are using at the moment won’t matter much.

All of these social media apps can be downloaded on cellphones. They allow users to upload photos, videos and/ or messages which can, in turn, attract approval or comments from other people. Most apps have some sort of privacy system that allows users to make their posts public or available only to approved followers. Teens should be encouraged to use these controls with the understanding that as soon as something is online, it’s no longer private.

The Benefits of Swaddling • Swaddling can be a great way to soothe and calm a fussy baby. It is thought that being tightly enwrapped gives a feeling of security, similar to being in the womb. • The newborn cannot regulate his temperature as well as an adult, so swaddling keeps his body warm. (Just make sure he doesn’t become overheated.) • Swaddling often helps a young baby sleep longer because it prevents the sudden movements that can cause her to wake up. • Swaddling can help a baby focus on breastfeeding, helping to keep his arms and legs out of the way. • Swaddling prevents a newborn baby, who can’t quite control his movements yet, from scratching himself with nails. • A swaddled baby is easy to carry and hold…an adorable, compact little package. Swaddling Options Some babies need to adjust to swaddling if it’s new to them, so give your baby a few opportunities to get comfortable with it before you abandon the idea. If your baby doesn’t seem to like swaddling, or is beginning to outgrow it, try leaving both or one of his arms free and just swaddle the rest of his body. In any case, the blanket should fit snugly, but not tightly; that could impede circulation or cause discomfort. The Age For Swaddling Swaddling usually works well for babies from newborn to about three or four months of age. However, babies who are used to swaddling may enjoy it for even a little longer. By Elizabeth Pantley, author of Gentle Baby Care and The No-Cry Sleep Solution

GIGI’S WORLD by Giavanna and Gina Schrecker
Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.
Holiday Pandemonium –
What Memories Are Made Of I love Christmas… it's my favorite time of the year. On the holiday scale, it falls right after Thanksgiving (since I’m a cook, I really enjoy that) and Halloween (free candy… hello!). The fact that we get a lot of presents and I get to cook makes Christmas a win-win for me. I also love eating the cookies we’ve baked and watching fun and festive shows like “Rudolph” and “Frosty the Snowman.”

Speaking of presents, one of my favorite parts of Christmas is spending time with family, and the giving and receiving that comes with that, of course! My cousins and I have this really fun gift-giving tradition of opening gifts from each other on Christmas Eve after we’ve stuffed our faces with seafood and side dishes. When we were younger, our parents told us that this portion of the festivities was sheer pandemonium – wrapping paper everywhere, gift boxes flying, and no one able to remember who got what and from whom. Now that we’re older and a bit more mature (most of the time!), we choose numbers and take turns so we can actually see what everyone gets. We even say our thankyou’s without being reminded!
Very Gentle Over 10 Years in Practice
92
But even with all the presents and Christmas-y experiences like decorating, celebrating, and partying, we always try to remember to give thanks to God for sending Jesus that day and to be thankful for all our presents. After all, if you think about it, it’s Jesus' birthday and he’s giving us all his presents… pretty cool.
www.siparent.com
Since things are different this Christmas without Pop-pop, it’s so important that we hold tight to traditions like our Christmas Eve gift exchange extravaganza. This year – and every year – Christmas should be about cherishing the things we do together each holiday season with as much excitement as we show opening presents. Because the best gift of all, truly, is both the pandemonium and peacefulness of family. It’s the stuff memories are made of. Staten Islanders Giavanna & Gina Schrecker invite you to write to Merry Christmas! them at editorial@siparent.com or post to www.facebook.com/siparent

SPEECH PATHOLOGY FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
