Maggie russo (bottom left) with our lady of good council teammates

soccer kids against cancer Their toes were cold, but their hearts were warm as the Staten Island Soccer Community recently came together at the Second Annual Gold Ribbon Games to support ten-year-old soccer player Maggie Russo in her battle with cancer. Players, referees, parents and coaches all braved the nighttime chill under the lights at the Owl Hollow Soccer Complex to raise money for Candlelighters NYC, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families of children with cancer as well as We Can Kick It, a foundation which uses soccer to inspire and empower children affected by cancer and their families. Maggie and her 13U Our Lady of Good Counsel Soccer Club teammates joined Petrides, Richmondtown, Great Kills, OLHC, St Patrick’s, OLSS, Holy Child, New World Prep and St Joseph Hill Clubs in games with players wearing gold socks — the color of childhood cancer awareness - to show their support for Maggie. The event raised $5,000 for the two charities! Maggie was diagnosed with cancer when she was almost two years old. It began in her left eye, which was removed, then later spread to her bone marrow and most recently her bladder. There is currently no cure or treatment for Aveolar Soft-Parts Sarcoma, the kind of cancer Maggie is battling. You can follow Maggie’s journey

One St. Dorothy’s student had an idea. She had heard about a program called Buddy Benches, where students who were new, lonely or bullied could sit on a special bench and have another student come sit with them. Her wish was to bring Buddy Benches to her school - and UPS made that wish come true through their annual Wishes Delivered campaign. As a surprise, the founder of the Buddy Benches program – nine-year-old Fort Wayne, Indiana student Sammie Vance - delivered the bench in person to the students of St. Dorothy. Shopping Online how to stay safe from hackers and cyber-scams

W

Hackers and cyber-scams can spoil your holiday. Experts share what you need to know before you click “buy.”

hen I was in high school, one of my friends bought a prom dress online. She had never heard of the company before, but the dress was hundreds of dollars cheaper than retail value, and the photo in the advertisements looked beautiful. She took her parents’ debit card and bought the discount “designer” gown without telling anyone. When it finally arrived in the mail weeks later in a package from China, she was overjoyed. But once she put on the dress, her excitement quickly turned to disappointment: The fabric was cheap and poorly cut, and the dress fit her like a trash bag despite the precise measurements she had sent the company. The “Swarovski” crystals were nothing more than cheap, poorly adhered rhinestones. My friend had been the victim of an online shopping scam, and her parents had to pay the price. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. With the holiday online shopping season upo us, it’s important to know how to recognize Internet shopping scams and phishing, or the act of stealing private

information through viruses or malicious computer codes. What may seem like the perfect gift for a great price could very easily be a sneaky way to rob you. And the methods of fooling people are getting more and more creative. So how can you avoid these schemes and keep your family safe? Here are a few things to look for when shopping online to help you recognize shady sites and keep your information private. Be Leery of Links “You should never, ever trust a link in an email,” says Eric Cole, Ph.D., a consultant, author, and former CIA employee with more than 30 years of experience in cyber security. “[People] get an email from a store that says, ‘Hey, we have a seventy-percent-off sale, but it’s only good for the next two hours. Click on the link below to take advantage of it.’ And they’re so excited about the sale they never look at the link very closely.” If you do get an unfamiliar email, “click on the name in the ‘sent from’ box to view

raising kids the actual email address,” suggests Justin Lavelle, chief communications officer of BeenVerified, an online background check platform. “If you don’t recognize the sender, your best bet is to not open the email, period, and never click on a link, attachment, or file within.” And, as obvious as it sounds, “if it seems too good to be true, it is,” says Alex Krush, a development operations engineer at Royal Bank of Canada. Finding $100 discounts or deals that are significantly below market value is a huge red flag, as are those 2-hour sales. These incredible deals are a means of luring in customers to a shady site. “More than not, an item that has an incredibly low price tag or out-ofthe-world features is probably part of a scam,” says Alayna Pehrson, manager of identity theft content for BestCompany.com, a consumer-review data company. You might think you’re saving money, but the potential savings are never worth the risk. Learn to Spot Suspicious Sites Of course, this is the season when some legitimate retailers do offer sweet deals. How do you know if the offer (and seller) you’re looking at is on the level? There are a few other factors to be wary of when visiting a potentially sketchy site. “If you think the website lacks some design skills, has a disorganized layout, and/or has several grammar and language mistakes, then you should probably not purchase anything from it,” Pehrson says. It’s important to keep in mind that retailers will care about their aesthetic, but a scam site likely won’t.

If your Internet browser doesn’t have an icon to indicate security, “Look for ‘https’ in the website address,” says Jacob Lunduski, a financial industry analyst for Credit Card Insider, a site that helps people find the right credit card for their finances. “This means the website is ‘secure’ and provides credibility when purchasing an item.”

Dr. Cole advises you to “make sure you’re using an up-to-date browser that’s verifying the digital certificate of the site.” Most modern browsers will let you know if something is secure. On Chrome, there will be a green lock next to the URL; that’s an indicator that your information going in a secure manner, and it’s verifying and validating the digital certificate of that site to give a higher level of trust, Dr. Cole says. In other browsers the lock may be yellow or appear as a key.

Think Twice About Third-Party Sellers What if you’re shopping from a big company like Amazon? Even though the distributor is trusted, some of the retailers that operate on the site might not always be legitimate. For Amazon purchases, look out for third-party sales that are neither sold nor fulfilled by Amazon.

raising kids “When you click on an item it will tell you whether you’re buying it directly from Amazon or if it’s going through a third party,” Dr. Cole says. “Anytime you’re buying things from a third-party, your credit card is now being charged and sent to that third-party, and if they’re not legitimate…they could easily be able to steal your information.” If you’re determined to purchase something from a third-party vendor, there are a few things you can do to minimize your risk. “Always read descriptions and reviews when possible,” Krush says. Predominantly bad reviews are a sign that something is fishy. And good reviews can be faked, so Will Geddes, author of Parent Alert, recommends you be wary of “a small number of short, generic, and positive reviews all posted within a short period of time and from the same country.” Also try to check how long the retailer has been a vendor on Amazon. “If they’ve been a retailer for Amazon for five years, that’s probably an indicator that they’re somewhat legit,” Dr. Cole says. Be Careful with Your Credit Even if you take all possible precautions, fraud and identity theft are still possibilities. The reason for this is simple: Every day, hackers are getting better and better at what they do. “The number one thing families can do is to utilize a separate credit card just for online purchases that has a small balance,” Dr. Cole advises. “If fraudulent activity occurs or if it gets stolen, now all you have to do is get a new card and you don’t have to worry about if you’re using that card for bills.” There are other good reasons to use a credit card for your online shopping. “With credit cards, the liability is with the credit card provider. With debit cards, the liability is with you,” Dr. Cole says. Additionally, it’s important to note that “credit cards offer many purchase and fraud protections where you’ll have time to report and manage the fraud before your bill is due,” Lunduski says. “With a debit card, fraudulent purchases leave your account immediately, causing you to have to work with your bank to get your money back.” When it comes to safety features, you should always “go to your credit card’s website or call them, [and] turn [these features] on,” says Dr. Cole, who personally receives text messages every time his card is used. If somehow your credit card is compromised, he recommends that you activate this feature, so you can stay informed at all times.

Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet What you need to heal your kids quickly and effectively

Kids will bring home more than homework once they’re back in school. They also bring home plenty of germs. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to check your medicine cabinet and ensure it’s fully stocked and ready for any sick days that may arise. (The common cold is a leading cause of missed days from school.) Parents should brace themselves for cuts, bites, scrapes and other maladies. Be prepared this flu season for whatever sickness your little ones pick up with these tips from leading health expert Bryce Wylde.

N

ow is the time to prepare for kids’ school-time sniffles and scrapes by cleaning out and organizing your medicine cabinets. Having remedies handy, exactly when you need them, will help relieve the stress of caring for a sick child. Start by doing the following: Choose a cool, dry storage place. Bathroom cabinets are okay as long as they don’t get warm and steamy during baths and showers. Many products degrade when exposed to humidity and warm temperatures. Check expiration dates. Toss any expired products. Many pharmacies offer safe medication disposal. Safely secure all medications. This is especially important if there are young children in the house. Lock these products in a high cabinet. Carefully review all labels. Now is a good time to remind yourself of any

precautions. Many over-the-counter (OTC) drugs have warnings regarding their use in those who have serious medical conditions such as heart, kidney, or liver disease. Understand dosing instructions. Some products for children are dosed by weight or age. Others are not safe or recommended for children. Make sure your cabinet is fully stocked. You’ll want to keep all the best products for healing your little ones safely, naturally, and quickly. Here are a few suggestions for things to keep handy around the house. For bruises and muscle strains: Arnica, available in tablets or gel, is a homeopathic remedy that can be used for treating minor bruises and muscle strains. It can reduce pain and swelling and speed healing. Keep a flexible cold pack handy to manage pain and swelling from an acute minor injury such as a strain or sprain. Ibuprofen can help treat aches and pains.

For the common cold:According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 22 million school days are lost annually in the United States because of the common cold. This year, you may want to stock up on black elderberry. It contains flavonoids called anthocyanins, which have a remarkable ability to stimulate the body’s immune system. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, black elderberries have more than twice the concentration of anthocyanins than is found in any other fruit. But unfortunately, you won’t find black elderberries at the grocery store. What you will find is a marvelous extract of black elderberry, sold over the counter as Sambucol Gummies. They are great for kids because they contain no artificial flavors or colors. They are also gluten, nut, soy, dairy, and egg free. For bug bites:Hydrocortisone creams help with the itching, swelling, and redness. But surprisingly they can cause kids’ skin to itch, burn, dry out, and change color. A natural alternative is an ointment that contains tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is antiseptic, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral. It helps take the sting and itch out of bug bites, and it’s good for minor cuts and irritations. For sore throats: Buckwheat honey is great for managing a sore throat. It contains antioxidants and nutrients that help speed healing. It also lubricates and soothes a sore throat. Buckwheat honey can be given to children age one year and older and is available in most health food stores. Throat sprays with Echinacea, sage, and peppermint can also help. For eczema/skin rash: Oatmeal baths can help relieve dry, itchy skin. Add 2 cups of ground colloidal oatmeal (not breakfast oatmeal) to a tub of warm water (hot water can further dry out and irritate skin). Then apply a moisturizer with soothing and hydrating ingredients such as vitamin E, aloe, and lavender. For nausea, upset stomach: Studies show that the very potent anti-inflammatory compounds called gingerols found in ginger can help relieve motion sickness, dizziness, nausea and gas, and soothe the intestinal tract. You can find supplemental ginger in chewables and gummies in pharmacies and health food stores. With these products readily available, you may be able to resolve many of your child’s typical health issues quickly and easily. Family Game Night top 20 board games and ideas

Bone-chilling temperatures and more than a week off school– what’s a family to do?? Game night, of course! Here’s our 20 favorite games to keep the family fun going at home all winter long.

P

ie Face Game – The winners are the players who manage to avoid getting whacked in the face with a dollop of delicious cream, but this is clearly the type of game where when hilarity ensues, everyone wins. New versions include Pie Face: Cannon and Pie Face: Sky High. Hasbro.com • Ages 5+

Dixit – Children are natural-born storytellers, and this is the type of game where the gift of creative storytelling comes in handy. Players take turns making up brief tales and their opponents must correctly guess which card describes each tale. It’s definitely a winner for kids and parents alike. en.Libellud.com • Ages 8+

Pictopia Disney Edition – If your family is like most American families, then you’ve probably seen your fair share of Disney movies and visited a Disney theme park at least once or twice. This game features 1,000 trivia questions to test players’ knowledge of everything Disney, and it’s usually a hit with both kids and adults. WonderForge.com • Ages 7+

Robot Turtles – If you think your child is too young to learn how to code, think again. This game teaches basic programming concepts to players as young as four years old without even using a computer screen. ThinkFun.com • Ages 4+ Apples to Apples Junior – Fans of the popular party game Apples to Apples can play this fun comparison game with their whole family now. The recommended age is 9+, but many reviewers claim to enjoy the “Junior” version with kids as young as five or six years old. MattelGames.com • Ages 9+ Spot It – With over 3,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, it’s hard to imagine anyone wouldn’t like this fast-paced matching card game. Simple instructions make it easy for younger players but fun for the whole family. Switch it up with different game versions, like Spot It Sports, Disney, Animals, Halloween, etc. There’s also a Junior version for younger players. BlueOrangeGames.com • Ages 7+ Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game – The rules are basic enough for early preschoolers to grasp, which helps young children understand basic concepts of board game play. Players get to use tweezers to grab acorns, which helps with developing fine motor skills as well. EducationalInsights.com • Ages 3-7 years Ticket to Ride – Frustrated by games that rely on pure luck? This fun and educational game incorporates strategic thinking and decision-making with a little bit of geography. Players collect and match train cards to claim railway routes throughout North America. DaysOfWonder.com • Ages 8-12 Qwirkle – At first glance, this game looks like Scrabble for preschoolers. But don’t let the tiles fool you, the two are nothing alike. In this simple yet engaging game, players build lines by matching tiles based on either color or shape. Although recommended for ages 6 and up, it can double as a simple color and shape matching game for the younger ones. But it’s also a hit with adults, making it truly fun for all ages. MindWare.com • Ages 6+ The Dinosaur Escape Game – Dinosaurs are big hit with any preschool crowd,

LIPM so it’s no wonder a game where kids get to manipulate big dinosaur game pieces along a game board has become so popular. Players work as a team to save the dinosaurs from a volcanic eruption and everyone wins. PeaceableKingdom.com • Ages 4-7 No Stress Chess – The rules of chess can sometimes seem complicated for adults, but this game teaches chess in smaller, simpler steps. The board is two-sided, so once players have a thorough understanding of the game, they can switch from the beginner side to the standard chess side. Winning-Moves.com • Ages 7+ Labyrinth – Incorporate fantasy with moving mazes for the perfect family game that’s easy enough for players as young as 7 or 8 up all the way up to teens and adults. Ravensburger.us • Ages 8+ Headbanz & Hedbanz Jr. – This engaging guessing game requires players to wear the answer on their head – literally. Spinmaster.com • Ages 5+ Watch Ya Mouth – Don’t let the title fool you; this game is 100% family friendly. Players take turns wearing mouthpieces and reciting phrases. And yes, it is as hilarious as it sounds. Wymgame.com • Ages 8+ Blokus – Game time is less than 30 minutes, making it the perfect length of time for kids. Even better? There is just one rule, so it’s pretty easy to get the hang of. Mattel.com. Ages 7+ Little kids can play cards too - Card games can be for everyone, but sometimes young players have trouble mastering the fanning technique required for grasping a whole handful. Gamewright’s Little Hands Playing Card Holder solves that problem for the tiniest card players with their handheld paddle that keeps cards in place. Learn more at gamewright.com or buy it on Amazon for $5. Updated Classics - If you’re a big fan of the classics, try versions that include popular characters or simpler rules for younger ones— like Clue: Harry Potter Edition; Disney Monopoly; The Game of Life Junior; Connect 4: Super Mario; and Candyland: Princess Edition. By Jeannine Cintron, Staten Island mom of two and her family’s reigning Scrabble Champion.

cool spots for winter break

Unlike its lengthier summertime counterpart, the winter break leaves parents with few options for entertaining kids while they’re off from school. The cold weather and shortened days may keep everyone inside, but you don’t need to stay home all week long. Check out some of these local spots for indoor fun over the winter break. Holiday Crafting Corner

Empty toilet paper tubes and glitter can go a long way for crafty families. These exciting holiday-themed projects are fun to make and kids can actually use use them in their holiday celebrations.

Santa Binoculars

It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s SANTA CLAUS!! These adorable binoculars will help kids search the skies for Saint Nick on Christmas Eve. You will need: • 2 Empty toilet paper rolls • Red felt • Gold scrapbook paper • White faux fur • Black tape • Ribbon or string • Hot glue gun • Scissors

Directions: 1. Cut 2 rectangles the width of your rolls and make sure the length covers the entire roll as well. Wrap each piece around the holders then glue. 2. Place both rolls together and wrap the end with black tape. This will hold the binoculars in place. 3. Cut a small square out of the gold paper and glue on to the middle of the black tape. 4. Wrap the faux fur around the end of the binoculars and cut to size, then glue on. 5. Cut the ribbon/string to the desired length needed. Glue each end to the inside of the rolls or between the felt and each roll. 6. Start looking for Santa! viewsfromastepstool.com

Glitter Menorah

So sparkly! Parents can have kids add the individual flames to this beautiful Menorah each day during Hanukkah. You will need: • Empty aluminum foil or saran wrap box for the base (or any long, thin, rectangular box) • 9 toilet paper rolls, or any long, thin tubes • Heavy metallic gold cardstock/cardboard (or cover paper with metallic gold contact paper etc.) • Heavy aluminum foil • Silver glitter • Gold sequins • Glitter glue in blue, gold and silver • 3-5 bottle caps • Hot glue gun • Scissors • Pencil

Directions: 1. Open your cardboard box so that it’s completely flat and inside out. Draw a design on the box (the inside part) with a pencil. Older children can draw the design themselves, but you can let younger kids trace it. Have the kids trace the design with glitter glue and set aside to dry. 2. Cut the cardboard tube into sections, for candles 3” high and for the shamash, 5” high. 3. Brush on watered down glue, and coat with glitter by sprinkling the glitter over the tube and turning the tube as you go. Do this over a plate so that you can use can re-use the glitter that falls. 4. Cut out flame shapes from gold cardboard, apply lines of glue, and have kids apply sequins. 5. When everything is dry, heat up the glue gun and start assembling. First glue the box closed. Glue at least three bottle caps to the bottom for feet. Then glue the candles to the box. 6. Cut circles of heavy aluminum foil about 1/4” bit larger than the tubes all around, and glue those to the tops of the tubes. 7. With scissors, make slits in the circle and fold down over the tube to form a cap. Using a knife carefully make slits in the aluminum foil caps, and Joseph Guerci Lucas Vazquez insert flames. Reapeat adding a flame each day of Hanukkah. creativejewishmom.com 26 December 2018 • siparent.com

Holiday Cooking with Kids If you want your kids to actually start cooking for you someday, you have to let them experiment in the kitchen when they are young. Sure it gets messy and might slow down the process. But the memories you make, combined with the meals they’ll whip up for you in the future, are well worth the effort.

Better-Than-Fruit-Cake Bark Ingredients 1/2 cup whole almonds 1 cup dried apricots, cut into quarters 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 1/2 lbs white chocolate (chopped or use morsels) Directions Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Pour almonds onto a second baking sheet and bake 5-7 minutes, until fragrant and golden brown. Meanwhile, add white chocolate to a medium microwave safe bowl. Heat chocolate 30 seconds at a time. Repeat until smooth, stirring each time. Reserve a small handful of fruit and nuts to garnish the bark. Sprinkle remaining fruit and nuts over the baking sheet. Pour melted chocolate over fruit and nuts and smooth with a spatula. Sprinkle remaining fruit over the top and gently press toppings into chocolate.

Snowflake Sugar Cookies Ingredients 3 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 2 large eggs 3 teaspoons vanilla extract 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted 4 tablespoons water or milk Directions Beat butter and sugar until combined. Add the eggs and 2 tsp of vanilla and beat. On low speed, slowly add in the flour and baking powder and beat until incorporated. Divide dough in half and roll out each to 1/4-inch thick. Place two sheets of dough on a baking sheet and chill for 1 hour or up to 1 day. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line large baking sheets with parchment paper. Remove the dough from the fridge and cut into shapes with a cookie cutter and transfer to the baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes or until the cookies are set and begin to brown.

Set at room temperature for 2 hours or chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. When firm and cool, break into pieces with your hands and serve.

For the icing, use a fork to beat together all the ingredients in a small bowl. The mixture should be very thick but still pourable. Transfer icing to a squeeze bottle using a funnel or a pastry bag fitted with a very small tip. Holding the bottle or bag tip directly over one corner of a cookie, create lines and dots in a snowflake shape.

Hanukkah Potato Pancakes Ingredients 4 medium potatoes 1 medium onion 2 eggs 3/4 cup matzo meal salt and black pepper vegetable oil Directions Place the potatoes and onion into a food processor or use a grater to coarsely grate both. Add the mixture to a strainer to remove excess water. Add the eggs and combine. Then add matzo meal and add to the mixture until a batter is formed. Add a pinch of salt and black pepper. Heat a griddle pan and add vegetable oil. Prepare the pancakes by using about two tablespoons of the batter to form the pancake. Place the pancakes onto the griddle. Use a spatula to press down on the pancakes until they turn a golden brown. Flip over and cook until the other side is brown as well. Drain on paper towels serve. apples4theteacher.com

A.M.B.E.R. Alerts America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response

I

know many of you may have questions about how Amber Alerts are activated. Here are the New York State guidelines for Law Enforcement agencies to activate the Amber Alert Plan for a missing child. “The AMBER Alert Program is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters, transportation agencies, and the wireless industry, to activate an urgent bulletin in the most serious child-abduction cases. The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and the safe recovery of the child.”

By Michael Reilly, District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

AMBER Alerts are automatically sent through the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) program to millions of cell phone users. If you have a WEA-enabled phone, you are automatically enrolled for the three alerts: President, Imminent Threat and AMBER Alerts. The New York State AMBER Alert Plan can be activated when an investigating law enforcement agency has reasonable cause to believe that: • An abduction of a child (under the age of 18) has occurred, and • The child is believed to be in danger of serious bodily harm or death, either due to the actions of another or due to a proven mental or physical condition.

Even if formal activation criteria have been met, activation may be impractical if available information is not specific enough and/or an extended period of time passed since the disappearance. For example, an AMBER Alert specifying involvement of a white van (without a license plate number) could hinder an investigation by causing the public to inundate police with possible sightings. “Reasonable Cause to Believe” means that from eyewitness accounts, or by eliminating other possibilities, your investigation leads you to believe that a child has been abducted. Familial abductions qualify only if a child is endangered by the actions of the abducting family member. Whenever an AMBER Alert request does not meet activation criteria, requesting agencies are referred to other NYS Police investigative resources and to the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services Missing Persons Clearinghouse (MPC) for possible issuance of a Missing Child/College Student Alert. AMBER Alerts will link to photos of missing children under FCC upgrades. Any questions or concersns on AMBER Alert messages received on your phone should be directed to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or missingkids.com.

arents: The new year is fast approaching -- the time when we feel obliged to make resolutions to improve our lives in some way. So often individuals make the same resolutions and abandon them within a few weeks. This year we have a new suggestion: Resolve to be grateful. This resolution will make you happier, and everyone in your family will be happier, too. Encourage your children to make the same resolution. It has been found that children who are grateful do better in school, so there is a big plus for them in making this resolution. Here are a few ways that everyone in your family can implement this resolution: Resolve to savor the good times that you have with your family. Resolve to focus each day on one thing that you can be grateful for. Parents can be grateful for how well their children are doing in school, and children can be grateful when their studying results in a good grade on a test. Both can be grateful for such things as good friends, a beautiful sunset and warm weather.

Resolve to be grateful for the people who have helped you. Thank them or write notes to express your gratitude. Question: My middle-schooler comes close to hating one of his teachers. And I don’t think that the teacher is too fond of him. What should be done to improve this situation? -- Love Lost Answer: When a student is extremely unhappy with a teacher, it can make for a miserable year. To improve the situation, you need to have a dialogue with your child first of all. You will want to listen and not jump to conclusions, as you are hearing only his side of the story. Remember also that your child and the teacher might not see the situation in the same way. When you talk to your child, see if there are specific instances that have caused him or her to dislike his teacher. Ask what he and the teacher could have done differently. You do need to point out that not all teachers will jibe with his learning style or personality, and he needs to learn how to deal with all different

LIPM kinds of people. Ask your son also what he might do to improve the situation, like showing interest in class. Do try to narrow down if this problem is because he is not doing as well as he wants in this class or it is more of a personality misfit. When you talk to the teacher, be respectful. See if she thinks that a problem exists and how it might be improved. Relate this information to your child and help him develop a plan to improve the relationship. Or you might think it appropriate for your child to attend this meeting so a solution to the problem can worked out at once between the teacher and your child Question: My neighbors and I were discussing what makes a good student. What do you think? -- Unknown Qualities Answer: Research shows that teachers place more emphasis on personal characteristics than academic skills. Most want to see students who are motivated, curious, self-disciplined, respectful toward teachers and persistent. They also consider children good students if they are willing to ask questions. Other qualities that teachers appreciate are being trustworthy, problem solvers, hard workers and honest. Question: What are some rewards that may inspire my children to do homework and household chores? Will rewards work? – Puzzled Answer: The purpose of giving rewards to a child is to get a task done. The end result you are seeking is for your child to move from receiving an extrinsic reward to realizing the intrinsic reward of valuing a task for the satisfaction of completing it. For example, getting their homework done well and turned in on time can produce the satisfaction of learning something new as well as getting good grades. Rewards tend to work when a reward is something that is important to children. Parents need to think about what will entice their children to work for a reward. It can be helpful for parents and children to decide what an award will be for the successful completion of a task. For some children, a reward chart can work. Children can earn stars or tokens for completing certain tasks. When they have a certain number of stars or tokens, they can receive a predetermined reward. Other popular rewards are money, the promise of a fun activity and media time.
