IT’S A USPS CHRISTIMAS: FULFILL A CHILD’S WISH LIST OR GET A LETTER POSTMARKED FROM THE NORTH POLE

THE GIFT OF READING

OPERATION SANTA

Did you know nearly two out of three children in New York City affected by systemic poverty can’t read at grade level? Barnes & Noble Staten Island is inviting customers to give the gift of reading to children in need during their annual Holiday Book Drive, when patrons have the opportunity to donate books to locally designated non-profit organizations. Last year, Barnes & Noble customers and booksellers provided more than 1.2 million books to over 630 local charitable organizations that provide services to children across the country. This year, the Staten Island Barnes & Noble will be collecting books for the Literacy Inc. organization and the Readers are Leaders program. In addition, they will be donating a portion of proceeds to designated local schools on various dates throughout the holiday season (listed below). Just say “book fair” at checkout to ensure a donation to the school. KIDS’ NIGHT ON BROADWAY 2020

It’s the night kids take over Times Square! The 2020 edition of Kids’ Night on Broadway in NYC will take place on Tuesday, February 25, with tickets going on sale this momth. Kids’ Night is an annual event wherein young people ages 18 and under can see a participating Broadway show for free when accompanied by a full-paying adult. A Kids’ Night on Broadway ticket also includes restaurant discounts, parking discounts, and more. Select shows will offer in-theatre activities for kids including talkbacks, special edition activity books, and other events. Visit KidsNightonBroadway.com for information and to purchase your tickets when they become available.

Those real letters to Santa might not make it up to the North Pole, but they will end up somewhere just as special. The United States Postal Service has launched Operation Santa in an effort to fulfill the holiday wishes of children throughout the country. Just go to the Operation Santa website and choose a real letter to “adopt,” and then ship your gifts to the child or family you’ve selected. Their website says: “Letters come from hopeful children and families. Answer one (or many) to make a difference. No matter how big the wish, do what’s doable for you.” You can adopt letters on your own or team up with friends, family or coworkers to make wishes come true. Go to uspsoperationsanta.com to learn more. Just a fun side note: go to usps.com to learn how to get a letter from the North Pole!

S.I. MALL STEPS UP SECURITY

Although the impressive upgrades to the Staten Island Mall have been well-received, recent increasing security concerns – particularly due to incidents involving unruly teenagers – have become a matter of concern to many, parents, in particular. According to Councilman Steven Matteo, Mall Management is taking the following measures to ensure the safety of its patrons: Task Force. The mall is assembling a task force of local community members, retailers, elected officials, NYPD and school officials to develop strategies to deal with the root of a problem that has surfaced at the mall--teen behavior. This is a grass roots effort to deal with the overall issue of how to deal with unruly teens within a public/private venue. Increased K-9 patrol. The mall has additional K-9 patrols on specific days when schools are out and teens are more likely to be hanging out at the mall. Increased security staffing. Additional officers will be present during days when teens are present at the mall, such as after school, evenings and holidays. Video surveillance. Additional cameras will be added to surveil the mall. Training. Additional training will be required for all security officers on dealing with groups of teens and young adults. NYPD presence. The NYPD has increased the amount of officers patrolling the mall property and will continue to add patrol coverage during the busy holiday season.

Cooking and baking are on the menu for Lillian Roslokken-Cipoletti, who grew up in New Dorp and now resides in Oakwood. “We still use my mom’s recipes, and a lot of the serving dishes we use were my mom’s and Grandmother’s,” she explained. “My sisters and our daughters, as well as my cousin and her daughters, get together and make Struffoli,” she recalled. Ms. Cipoletti hosts Christmas Eve for her husband’s family. “We do pajamas on the day so everyone is comfortable. We play games after desserts. We both come from close knit Italian Catholic families, so we keep the traditions going,” she added. “All the kids help from cooking to decorating.” Gia Stammer of New Dorp Steven Laino of Rossville Traditions exemplify other parents’ holidays. Beyond Toys and Games GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING

The Christmas gifts are wrapped and piled in a beautiful array under the tree. When the children open them, some of their holiday dreams will come true and everyone will be filled with holiday joy. Now, fast forward to a week or two later, and those longed-for toys and games are either broken or they’ve become just another part of the possession pile—almost passé. Before you wonder if Scrooge is writing this article, let me say I love Christmas. I love giving presents and I love watching children open them. But allow me to put in a good word for the type of gifts that will keep on giving pleasure, inspiration and educational benefit long after the holidays are over. After reading through these ideas, you might put a bug in the grandparents’ ear. They’ll be happy to provide some of these long-lasting, valuable gifts as their Christmas offerings. Here they are:

LESSONS From music lessons, to art, drama, dance and sports, the gift of a series of lessons in some skill area will add character-building traits to your child’s personality. The child who learns to practice diligently, focus on a skill, set goals and meet them, experience defeat and then move on to victory, that child has gained lifelong benefits. Ask your children some questions. Listen to their discussions when they’re dreaming of what they want to be or accomplish in their lives, research the best teachers and schools in your area. Choose from individual lessons with one on one attention or group lessons, which can be a wonderful starting point in a new skill. Studies show more and more clearly that children with the ability to focus their attention and follow through with practice become better learners in every subject area.

raising kids SUBSCRIPTIONS Magazine subscriptions, books of the month and other learning materials that arrive at your child’s doorstep on a regular basis instill a love for learning. Children look forward to the next issue, the next story, the next episode. They enjoy being “old enough” to have something come in the mail just for them. There are fantastic books and magazines available for children. From literature to science, math, geography, history and more, the wealth of information available is quite wonderful. You know your child. You’ll know the types of reading materials to purchase. And as your child grows, so can the reading and interest levels of the subscription. There are excellent choices for all ages. LIFE EXPERIENCES This choice may be the best one you can choose. Give the gift of time and adventure to your children. How about a planned trip to a local art or history museum? How about a week-end trip to Ghost Towns a short drive away? How about purchasing a book on geology and then taking a trip to some areas displaying geologic wonders? Every town and region has its own historical background. Did they used to mine for gold in your area? Is lumber or fishing a local industry? Did Lewis and Clark travel through your part of the world? Are there Native American sites to visit and learn about? Since parents are their child’s first and foremost teachers, you can take the initiative to combine learning with family fun. There are endless possibilities, and you can be sure the kids will love the time together and soak in a bit of learning at the same time. So go ahead and buy the toys, dolls and games the kids want for Christmas. But why not make it an annual tradition to add in at least one gift that will keep on giving?

raising kids I reinforced the safety concerns that arise when New York City Department of Education’s protocol of requiring photo identification for entry is suspended. Throughout the school year those entering a school are required to provide photo identification to the school safety agent to properly document those entering. During elections, those protocols are suspended as voters are allowed to enter a school polling site without providing identification. In addition, I explained that during election days students are often displaced from their cafeterias, libraries, and gymnasiums. Prior to Early Voting that would be for two or three days as voting equipment was installed and removed and the primary and general election were conducted. Early Voting has extended that time period to nine days of early voting and the actual primary and general election. During the November 2019 election period that resulted in a total of 12 days, seven of which are student attendance days at the 33 schools designated as early voting sites.

ARE WE PUTTING OUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY AND EDUCATION FIRST?

EARLY VOTING & ITS IMPACT ON SCHOOLS IN 2020 BY MICHAEL REILLY

NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

A

s you might have noticed, the New York State Legislature and Governor Cuomo approved early voting this year. Although I voted in favor of it, during the discussion on the bill I highlighted concerns about using school buildings as polling sites. I urged my colleagues to be mindful about the impact it may have on students, staff and the overall operation of schools.

EXTREMELY LOW EARLY VOTING NUMBERS Citywide, 60,110 of the approximate 4.7 million registered voters visited an early voting site during this inaugural event. Only 4,247 Staten Islanders out of the 319,473 registered voters ventured to an early voting site. New York City students at 33 schools were locked out of their cafeterias, gymnasiums and school libraries for more than a week so that 1.4% of registered voters could cast a vote. Mayor de Blasio allocated $75 million for early voting. Based only on that $75 million, each early vote cost $1,247.71. 2020 PRIMARY AND GENERAL ELECTION The 2020 Election cycle will have an even far greater impact on our schools. The June 2020 Primary Early Voting will take place June 13-21 with Primary Day on June 23rd. The General Early Voting will be held October 24-November 1, with the General Election Day on November 3. That will result in upwards of 15 days of students and staff being displaced from cafeterias, gymnasiums and school libraries if other non-school alternative Early Voting sites are not designated. I have urged City Hall, the Board of Elections and my colleagues in city and state government to work together to identify alternative Early Voting sites to ensure safety and minimal disruption to our children’s education. All views expressed are that of the author and do not necessarily represent the opinions of Staten Island Parent. Please email our editor directly with any concerns at jcintron@siparent.com.

raising kids kids are acting out. However, we asked experts to give us the reasons behind why teenagers act out or stay silent, so you can discover better ways to cope and communicate with yours. THEIR BRAINS WORK AGAINST THEM “While teenagers’ brains are growing at a rapid rate, they are still many years away from maturity—as brains typically complete growth at age twenty-five,” says David Ezell, founder and CEO of Darien Wellness, a counseling and psychiatry group in Darien, CT. “The last part of the brain to develop is the frontal cortex, which is the part that contains the executive functioning area and is involved with abstract thought, planning, and impulse control.” What does this mean for your teen who is juggling many new thoughts and emotions? “Executive functions allow us to plan and see consequences,” Ezell says. “So, what adults perceive to be obviously ‘risky’ behavior does not seem that way to teenagers because their brains have difficulty connecting today to tomorrow. The combination of a lack of experience and a developing brain sets young people up to put themselves in situations that most adults would consider to be very dangerous.”

WHY YOUR TEENAGER IS DRIVING YOU CRAZY BY LAMBETH HOCHWALD

Lambeth Hochwald is a New York City-based journalist covering trends, relationships, and life in New York City.

T

here is a reason your teen making bad or questionable decisions is the (unfortunate) norm in the adolescent years. But don’t worry! It’s just a phase. You probably know that some bad behavior often comes with having a teenager– whether it’s making choices without regard to consequences, questioning authority (aka parents and teachers), or just become more distant. It can feel like your teenager is driving you crazy, making this a challenging time for both parent and child–and it can be hard to understand why our

THEY LACK EXPERIENCE There’s another very important reason your teens are acting out, and it’s actually quite simple: Teenagers haven’t had anywhere near the life experience you’ve had. “As adults, we know that if we don’t pay the ConEd bill, the lights will be turned off,” Ezell says. “Most teens lack that experience of cause and effect, nor have they seen their peers experience a similar situation.” Remember: Being a teenager is a developmental stage, albeit one that may involve intense mood swings, lying, social media obsession, and trading communication with you for spending way more time with his friends. “This is a time when a child is going from being a child to becoming an independent adult, which is also why there is so much change happening in their body, minds, and actions,” says Shuli Sandler, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist in Teaneck, NJ. “A lot of this time is about figuring out who they are and part of that is pushing limits in the service of that exploration and discovery.” HORMONES ARE SURGING Along with changing bodies come changing hormones, which play a large role in what teens are feeling.

“All of these new hormones can also contribute to a lack of impulse control,” says Nikita Banks, LCSW, a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in Brooklyn. “Think about all that your teen is juggling. She is both trying to figure out who she is as an individual and find her place in society, which is a very big transition. To do this, she may pull away or test the values of her family and adapt behaviors that will be seen as more desirable to her peer group. When you put all of these factors together it can make for one wild ride.” With this surge in independence, teens may push the envelope to see how far they can push you. “The goal you hope for as a parent is for your teen to ultimately end up in the middle where he takes appropriate risks but uses caution and prudence when indicated,” Dr. Sandler says. “It does take time for the two extremes to settle down in the middle, as is often the case in life.”

LIPM

WHAT YOU CAN DO Given all of this change, keeping the lines of communication open with your teen is very important— especially when he makes bad or questionable choices. Plan regular outings together or eat meals as a family to bridge the gaps and enable everyone to feel heard. “This time together is very important, and it serves another purpose, too. It’s actually a really good way to get an inside view of what is going on in their life,” Banks says. “Your goal should be twofold: You want to monitor their social interactions with friends to the best of your ability, but also give your child a voice.” After all, any strong connection you can keep with your teen is crucial and will help ease the very important transition she is moving through. “When teens feel that they are not only seen but heard at home, it helps them develop a greater sense of self-esteem,” Banks adds. “It also provides a strong foundation for them to be able to withstand the social pressures of this time of life.”

Important Educational Questions EDUCATORS WEIGH IN ON CURRENT TOPICS

Experienced educators and authors Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts give solid advice about everything school and education-related. Read more Q & A on siparent.com/dearteacher Parents should send questions and comments to dearteacher@dearteacher.com

Parents: Obviously, the more you know about what your children are doing in school, the easier it will be for you to help them to do their best. In addition, you will be able to praise them for their very real accomplishments, which makes for a win-win situation. Look over the following list of New Year’s Resolutions and find a few that would help you to have a good picture of how your children are doing in school: • Chat daily with your children about school. This will give you an idea about how school is going for your child. Reluctance to talk about school might be an indication of problems. • Look over younger children’s work each day. It is best to do this with your children. If their papers are bleeding with red marks almost every day, it is time for a chat with their teacher. • Ask your older children to show you their schoolwork and note the grades and any comments made by the teacher. • Use the school/teacher’s web pages to find out exactly what is being studied. In some schools, teachers put online homework assignments, class participation points and

quiz and test scores online. • Get teachers’ email addresses as this is a great way to communicate with them. • Go to all parent-teacher conferences that are scheduled during the year and listen carefully to what a teacher says about how the children are doing. • Read your children’s report cards carefully. Look at attendance and conduct. • Talk with a teacher or school counselor for other kinds of information about your child’s performance, such as test scores and teacher observations. • Remember that when you get to know the teachers in informal situations, you can do nothing but improve your relationship with them when you are dealing with situations affecting your children • Attending events at your children’s school gives you the opportunity to meet other parents. This can be an advantage in gaining more information about the school and your children’s teachers and classes. Question: My child, a sixth grader, loves technology. She also has a weak vocabulary. Are there any ways to combine building vocabulary and technology? -Multitasker

LIPM Answer: It is very important for children to have a good vocabulary. Academic success depends on the ability to understand what is read. Having a good vocabulary is one of the keys to comprehending material, especially new material. Most children have a sufficient everyday vocabulary to communicate easily with others. However, the language of textbooks and classroom work is a far more difficult vocabulary to acquire, as it involves language not ordinarily used in daily conversation. Fortunately, there are ways to expand your daughter’s vocabulary that involve technology. You might start with having her explore word games. This way she could be having fun and at the same time expanding her vocabulary. Your daughter might search with you online for vocabulary games. Make sure appropriate websites are chosen. One site that you might consider looking at is vocabulary.com. It has a fun quiz that older elementary students can use to improve their vocabulary online. The quiz gives four potential meanings for a vocabulary word, and students select the one they think fits. It’s ideal for elementary students because it provides a hint for students who have no idea what a word is. Another great tool that will help your child immediately look up a word she does not recognize in her reading is online reference tools. She will be more likely to use this type of tool rather than a print dictionary. Many of these tools are free. Explore several with your daughter. Some can be mounted on the browser toolbar for ease of usage. Because students who have the best vocabularies are those who have acquired it through reading widely, encourage your daughter to read books that appeal to her online. Many e-books have dictionary help that offers not only the definition of a word but also its pronunciation. Your child should also begin to use the vocabulary help that is offered on many websites. For example, there is a word wizard that pops up when students are reading Scholastic News online. Finally, for your child to increase her vocabulary, encourage her to listen to audio narration of books, especially those that will let her have access to dictionary definitions of words that she might not know. And it would be wise to ask her teachers about websites that the child can use to increase her vocabulary. Question: My son does well in second grade. However, his handwriting is still very messy. He can’t seem to stay on the lines – writing either above or below them with many words. How can we help him write neater? – Messy Writing Answer: Actually, there is a relatively simple trick that could help him. You could have him use paper with raised or bold lines. Just search for it online, and you will find many choices. Or you can make your own lined paper with glue or bold colored lines that will indicate where he should be writing.
