S.I. LIVING Community & School News Happy Birthday, Clifford! One of literature’s most beloved animal friends, Clifford the Big Red Dog™, celebrates his 50th birthday on February 14. Scholastic has been celebrating this important anniversary year since last September, but now is the time that Clifford’s fans can send him birthday greetings. Allow your children to visit www.scholastic.com/clifford/ and help them sign an online birthday card that Clifford can open on his big day. Happy Birthday!
School’s Health Center to Remain Open Some good news after Sandy: The New Dorp High School Health Center will remain open despite city budget cuts. For the past 22 years, the school has operated the Island’s only fully functioning Adolescent Medicine Health Center in conjunction with Staten Island University Hospital, providing primary care to more than 11,000 students. After Hurricane Sandy devastated our community, particularly the New Dorp area, the NYC Office of Management and Budget had proposed that the Health Center be cut to slim down the budget. Thankfully, Borough President James Molinaro was able to convince Commissioner Thomas Farley to keep the center open. In a press release issued by his office, BP Molinaro stated,“I told the Commissioner that closing the Center is the wrong thing to do, especially at this time. I’m pleased that he was receptive and that he recognizes the importance of the Health Center to the New Dorp community, which is still trying to recover from the historic storm. The re-instatement of this primary care program also helps to relieve the burden on the emergency rooms of our hospitals.”

don’t have much of a math brain, don’t take on the task of making sure the bills are paid and the accounts are balanced each month. Instead, take the lead in dealing with teachers, repairmen, etc. When you force yourself to do something for which you have little aptitude, you only frustrate yourself and, by extension, the people with whom you live. Date your spouse again. When you’re newly in love and in full courtship mode, you do everything you can to spend every free moment with your partner. Eventually though work, kids, responsibilities, and life in general tend to get in the way of your relationship with your spouse. The two of you stop doing fun things with only one another, and it’s easy to go weeks at a time without having any serious conversations that don’t revolve around work, money, or kids. That’s why it’s imperative to set aside time to date your spouse and get back to the essence of how you fell in love in the first place! “I hope that once you begin celebrating, respecting, and loving your spouse, as well as prioritizing your marriage every day, you’ll find that the whole dynamic of your relationship changes,” Patkin concludes. “I hope that you’ll begin smiling more, feeling better, and experiencing more ‘spark.’ It’s true: Everything—and especially our own happiness—really is, to a huge extent, about our relationships with other people. And I think Cupid would agree!”
By Todd Patkin, author of Finding Happiness: One Man’s Quest to Beat Depression and Anxiety and–Finally–Let the Sunshine In. He lives with his wonderful wife, Yadira, their amazing son, Josh, and two great dogs, Tucker and Hunter.

Share a special family word or phrase. When my husband was a young boy, his mother would always say “See you in the morning” to him and his brother after she tucked them in at night. Now I say that same phrase to our son every night — even though he’s now 15 and taller than me! It always brings a smile — and warm thoughts of Grandma, too. Add a little fun to your child’s lunchbox. “When I was young, my mom used to carve a simple face into the apple she placed in my lunch box. It looked a lot like a jacko-lantern face,” says Sarah Doyle Lacamoire of Isle of Islay, Scotland.“I know it probably sounds silly, but just the fact that she took the extra time to do that made me feel special — and gave me a good giggle.” To add a Valentine’s twist, carve a heart on the side of a big red apple — complete with Cupid’s arrow, of course! End the day with love — and a little silliness. Top off your day with a special goodnight kiss designed just for your child, suggests Susan Newman, Ph.D., author of Little Things Long Remembered: Making Your Children Feel Special Every Day. “Two pecks on the forehead, one on the nose and one on top of the head, for example, underscores how special your child is to you.”

how your family’s financial situation may have changed to warrant more aid. The worst they can say is no. “You cannot think about college today without thinking about how to pay for it. With college tuition continuing to rise, it’s more important than ever for students and their parents to be savvy consumers and act strategically to increase their chances of securing strong financial aid packages,” said Jieun Choe, executive director of college admissions, Kaplan Test Prep. "While many students may find it necessary to take out loans to pay for college, it's always preferable to secure scholarships instead, which unlike loans, do not have to be paid back. It will be enormously more beneficial for students to graduate college owing as little money as possible, especially when loans carrying interest add to the full cost of tuition."
Facts about college costs:
• In 2012-13, average published tuition and fees for public four-year colleges and universities for in-state students is $8,655 – up from $8,256 in 2011-2012. For full-time out-ofstate students, the cost is $21,706, up from $20,823 the previous academic year. • At private, nonprofit four-year colleges and universities, average published tuition and fees for 20122013 stand at $29,056, up from $27,883 the previous academic year. • For the current academic year, full-time undergraduates at public four year institutions receive an estimated average of $5,750 in financial aid. At private, nonprofit institutions, the average is $15,680. Provided by Kaplan Test Prep. www.kaptest.com

destroyed, but the image of the destroyed houses on Staten Island right after Sandy still stays etched on my heart. Think about how devastating it is for those who have that same image, except, for them, it is their own home. They see years of investing, improving, decorating, sharing good memories with families and friends snatched away in one swift surge. All the things that made their home are gone forever, but love is not gone.

Love is the volunteer who fed, gave supplies, and cleaned out debris. Love is those who established practical communication on social media to help connect those who wanted to help with someone who needed help. Love is the churches and other organizations that took up collections specifically for the people, and then got the money directly to the people in the form of gift cards, a practical and tangible help. Slow-moving insurance companies left the victims in limbo for way too long. Flood Insurance was even slower, especially when politics took the front page over the welfare of those who experienced so much devastation. Congress gave them an additional slap in the face by delaying aid, and putting the flood insurance program in jeopardy in the process.

Camp Directory in March This directory is available on www.siparent.com all the time!
Love is the politician who put aside being a Democrat or Republican to be an American concerned about Americans, placing the priority on the people over the politics. Just think about making insurance payments month after month for years for flood insurance. A disaster happens, and the threat appears that there is no money to fulfill the insurance claim. As Americans, how can we allow this injustice? A few months cannot remove all of this. The only way to rebuild lives is by holding fast to the strength to take it one slow step at a time. The support of others helps them hold onto the faith to continue to do this. Together as Staten Islanders, we can make sure that every one of us heals. Faith, hope, and love do remain on Staten Island, and the greatest, and most important of these, is love! By Angie Mangino, a Staten Island writer, who continues to witness love in action on Staten Island. www.AngieMangino.com

Finding Girl Scout Cookies is now easier than ever thanks to a free app available for iPhone or Android as well as the newly refreshed Official Girl Scout Cookie Finder at www.girlscoutcookies.org. Many Girl Scouts even accept credit cards. If you didn't get a chance to preorder your cookies this year, look around your neighborhood for Girl Scouts selling cookies via point of sale from March 2nd until May 20th.
"Last year, New York City Girl Scouts sold over 1.2 million boxes of Girl Scout Cookies. This number isn't remarkable just because it is so large, but because it stands for the 1.2 million times girls had the opportunity to learn, develop, and further their business, financial literacy, entrepreneurial, and leadership skills. So, while the revenue from the program only covers a portion of our costs, it is a wonderful program that has an enormous impact on all girls from every corner of the city." ~ Barbara Murphy-Warrington, CEO, Girl Scouts of Greater New York
Whether you prefer the popular Thin Mint, the classic short-bread-themed cookie, or one of the other varieties from Girl Scouts of the USA’s two licensed bakers, your Girl Scout cookie purchase will help the next generation of female leaders develop skills that last a lifetime. And that’s a cause worthy of America’s beloved treats. FEBRUARY 2013
