LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Readers, Last month was “the month of the cicadas” for many parts of Staten Island. It was a very interesting, albeit noisy, phenomenon that most of our children were seeing for the first time. Were they curious enough to save any for a science project; or were they so traumatized that they avoided outdoor activities? It makes us wonder what our lives will be like when the cicadas reappear 17 years from now in 2030! Now, on to summer and fireflies! If these insects provoke another round of questions from your kids, prepare yourself with all the answers by reading “The Science Behind Fireflies” on page 42. We are looking forward to seeing pictures of children holding up their firefly-filled jars posted on our Facebook page. Summer is a great time to infuse learning into your family outings, and Staten Island is a great place to explore history. This month’s cover article will give you some basic facts about a couple of Staten Island’s most famous locations. Check out other places to visit under the “Resource” tab at www.siparent.com/recreation.php. The Conference House will now be a part of little Dominick DePaolis’ history. Dominick is one of the winners of our Cover Kids Contest. You can read about this adorable 2 ½-year-old in our Close Up story. Look for more winners gracing S.I. Parent covers in upcoming months. Now more than ever, day trips are an option that many families are choosing for their vacation time, proving that you don’t have to travel far to have fun. We found some really different and exciting things to do in New Jersey that won’t break the bank or drain your gas tank. Check them out on page 56. Extend the day by taking in a Fireworks show while you are there. You can find information on this summer’s fireworks displays on page 62 or view the updates online at www.siparent.com. Vacations with child on the autism spectrum can be made easier when you prepare before you go. Read some tips from the National Autism Network on page 36. If this summer is all about preparing your child for college, don’t worry. Breathe. Then flip to page 44 and find out the seven best things you need to do in July. Next month, when it’s crunch time, you won’t want to miss 15 Must-Do’s for the week before they begin campus life. We love to chat—especially on Facebook. We’ve shared in print some of what the chatter has been about recently. Join in on the discussion— we’d like to hear your ideas and opinions. I sometimes just start up discussions with parents to find out what they like about S.I. Parent. If we’ve spoken, thank you for your input. Please know that your opinion is very important to us. If not, please share your thoughts. Email, write, post or comment on a contest entry. We are giving away tickets to some awesome family outings this summer because, well, because everyone loves to win prizes! See page 5 for details on how to enter. Hey, you just might win. Wouldn’t that be a great surprise for the family? See you on Facebook!

The Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series is set to return to Staten Island on Thursday, July 25 from 7 to 8 pm at Clove Lakes Park. Enjoy an evening of opera as performed by a trio of rising Met stars: Ying Fang, soprano; Mario Chang, tenor; and Brandon Cedel, bass-baritone. Bradley Moore is the piano accompanist for the evening. The free performance is sponsored by the City Parks Foundation Summer Stage. For more information, visit www.cityparksfoundation.org/calendar.

New Schools Opening this September

The new public school being built in Concord, on the site of the old Doctors’ Hospital and across the street from P.S. 48, is set to open this September. The $53 million school will be named Atlas Academy, a fitting tribute to Staten Island philanthropist Teddy Atlas and his late father, Dr. Theodore Atlas, who was one of the founders of Doctors’ Hospital in 1963. The school will welcome students in grades Pre-K through sixth this September; it will eventually add seventh and eighth grades over the next two years. The current P.S. 48 will reopen as P.S. 9, a new choice school that will offer pre-K and kindergarten classes. A third new

school, P.S. 59, will be opening to pre-K and kindergarten classes at the former St. Peter’s Girls High School. The new school openings are being heralded as a way to address the overcrowding of schools on Staten Island to better serve the educational needs of young people.

Notre Dame Academy Student Wins Petrides Award

Eileen Macron, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Notre Dame Academy, has won the Michael J. Petrides Student Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science. She was one of 19 other highly accomplished students who were recognized in May at a ceremony held at the Petrides School in Sunnyside. Michael J. Petrides, who passed away in 1994, was a top educator on Staten Island, having served in various roles that included dean and professor of engineering at CSI, former chairman of Community School Board 31, and member of the former NYC Board of Education. He would likely be proud of Eileen, who will be going on to study molecular and cellular biology at Harvard University this fall. Eileen’s name is now inscribed on a marble plaque at the Petrides Educational Complex. She received a $1,000 check from the Petrides family. Daniel Smith of Tottenville High

P.S. 69 Students Recognized for Sandy Relief

Students at P.S. 69 have proven that pocket change can go a long way. Thanks to “The Hurricane Harvest Team”—aka fifth graders Josephine Man, Belinda Zhang, and Joseph Lee—$2,572 was raised through a Penny Harvest drive that collected pennies for Hurricane Sandy relief. The team created a “Penny Olympics” to encourage classes to compete against each other to raise the most money; the class with the most pennies collected earned an extra gym period for their efforts.

S.I. LIVING Community & School News At an event in May, Borough President James Molinaro presented each of the students with a Certificate of Appreciation. The students also presented the $2,572 check to Dominick Ciccarelli and Frank Martarella, co-founders of the non-profit organization ConstructionRELIEF, which works to rebuild homes for those affected by Sandy. The money raised by the fifth graders will be used to help repair a South Beach home.

Readers Are Leaders Results Are In

Last month at the Petrides School, Borough President James P. Molinaro honored the winners of the fourth grade reading challenge, “Readers Are Leaders.” The program, which has become an annual favorite of students and teachers, involves fourth graders reading six books and writing one book report over a five-week period. One student from each of the Island’s schools was selected as the Champion Super Reader and was invited to the ceremony along with his or her family, principal, and student coordinator. Each Champion Super Reader was awarded with a Certificate of Achievement, a book, and a bookmark. CTV, one of the sponsors of the event, also gave each student a Barnes & Noble gift certificate to help encourage the wonderful habit of reading. The following fourth graders were honored at the event: Gianna Durazzo, PS 1;

Anthony Loiacono is a man that goes above and beyond the call of duty for his friends, family and community. When he found out that the school his daughter attended, Stepping Stones Pre K, was in need of computers, Anthony was on the job. He believed that it was important to start young in training children to become computer savvy. He also believes in recycling and reusing. The company he works for, The CollegeBound Network, was in the market for new computers, so with their permission, he used the opportunity to do repair work on the old computers and then donated them to the school. His wife Laura told us about the experience, “He has put his time and money into fixing up the computers and has already delivered and set up two computers for the school. My living room is now a computer fix it shop. He reached out to local businesses and some have donated to the cause. He has to play "Frankenstein” to fix up these computers by taking parts from one and putting them into another to make them work. He does it because he feels it will benefit these kids.” According to Laura, Anthony has a big heart and she loves him dearly. ”He deserves to be acknowledged for this and all his time and efforts he has put into this. All I can say is that we are one lucky family to have a man/father like this in our lives.”

LOVE

& MARRIAGE Series

Coming Full Circle

Part III:

Empty nest— the stage in a family’s cycle when the children have grown up and left home is traumatic for some, yet enlightening for others.

For my family, on the same day my son moved out of the house to attend college, two of my nieces moved in (temporarily). The only one feeling depressed was my son because he’d lost his room. When my daughter moved out for college, I cleaned out her room and made a giant classroom/office where I could be happy with all of my books, files and students. Imagine her surprise when she decided to come back home and commute. Fortunately, there was one more bedroom for her to claim. My husband and I found, like many couples, that the most challenging part of having grown children is the sudden plethora of time we have alone together—often really long stretches of time. Where once it was difficult to schedule in a quick dinner out alone, we now have more hours than there is conversation to fill. Of course, that does not mean we do not communicate, it only means after all of these years, we know more about each other. I can truly understand now why my mother always said she knew more about my father than he knew about himself. Is it exactly how it was over thirty years ago when we were

first married without children? Yes, minus the energy part and plus a few more dollars in our pockets. Without tuitions and other childrearing costs to juggle, we can spend money pursuing our own interests and hobbies without guilt. By respecting each other’s independent interests, we now have the space to be the new, reinvented adults we always wanted to be. This is also a crucial transitional time in your marriage, and one that needs to be navigated carefully. Some couples may have difficulty handling new issues that arise during this phase of life: health, financial, or even the extra free time. Things certainly are changing, and you should be ready to change with them. Use this time to revitalize your relationship. Acknowledging that things are changing and that it will be okay can be very reassuring. Changes can bring out insecurities that may have been festering below the surface. It can be stressful but it can also be a time to redefine your relationship, find new fulfillment, closeness and intimacy. The good news is that with good communication and preparation, this phase of your marriage can be exciting and full

of new beginnings. More good news is that you can actually have time alone to talk about topics that pertain to your future. In the early years, it seems that time flew by and life just happened. We went from being a newlywed couple to full house. We worked hard for our family and our future and had little time for ourselves. The future is here so slow down, have a cup of coffee, or if you prefer, a glass of wine. If it has always been your dream to retire in the Poconos, resist making rash decisions. Think about the financial and social aspects of your decisions. How will you feel being so far away from friends and family? Will you be able to come and go as you please? Unfortunately, isolation can lead to depression and as we age, independence can be compromised. My husband and I have decided to escape to a condominium down south every few months rather than completely relocate. We stay away just long enough for the kids to notice we are missing. We love to hear from the kids or have them visit us. When they do come back, it is as if they never left. The house is alive again and so is the mess that comes with a full house! It is all good. Now is the time to be responsible and check that your wills and estate planning is complete. It may be time to downsize if your house is too large or too expensive to maintain. There is a certain serenity in knowing that you and your partner are financially secure and that all of your ducks are in a row. As for financial issues, I believe Oprah says it best,“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.” Roles in the home may also be changing. I believe that some men become more nurturing and women, who generally have been more responsible for the children, are now becoming more expansive. Some may enjoy going to school, going back into the workforce or pursuing other interests and hobbies. In my case, retirement gave me the freedom to write again. Although it may seem like you are moving in different directions, but you are actually moving closer together in the

center. Giving each other freedom and respect will help you to refocus on each other as well. I no longer want to plan every meal that goes on the table but my husband still wants to eat. Solution: he cooks more and goes food shopping as well. Gone are the days when a man’s masculinity is compromised if he shares in household tasks. Although, I am very excited that Key Food opened on Arden Avenue so I can run out at 8 a.m. to catch the sales. We also just discovered La Bella Supermarket with its cozy eating areas indoors and out. Of course, we also still hit Costco occasionally and enjoy an inexpensive lunch there among all the chaos. Now you know what old married people do for fun! Once you have adjusted to being empty nesters, or retired or semi-retired, it is time to meet the challenges and joys of the final journey of your marriage. I hope that you enjoyed the newlywed years, you survived the married with children years, and now you are sliding into the celebrated years of being together again. However, it is not always easy to embrace those years with an optimistic glow until you are both at peace with each other. Start with accepting each other again, just as you did when you said, “I do”. Next, it is very importatnt to learn to let go of the past if you are disappointed, feel like you have unfulfilled dreams, or missed expectations. No one is perfect. You need to forgive and forget in order to move forward. Make a list of all the things you can and will do in the future, both together and individually. With your children now grown up, you can choose your own friends. Find other couples that have similar interests, join groups, clubs and organizations that interest you. You no longer have to be a soccer mom or a Boy Scout leader. The empty nest years of your marriage can be times of incredible fun and adventures, no matter what challenges you have previously overcome. These are the years to reconnect, renew your friendship with each other and create a vision for the rest of your life. By Marianna Randazzo, a Staten Island writer who plans on entering the Golden Years with rose-colored glasses.

THE DANGERS OF WEARING FLIP-FLOPS

lip-flops may be a trademark of breezy summer days but they can pose serious health risks. "There are limited statistics about injuries related to flipflops because people aren't always certain an injury is directly related to wearing the sandals," says podiatrist Alan Berman of Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine in New York. "A hairline fracture or a sprain might never be attributed to a person's flipflops." In the United Kingdom, where a more socialized form of health care makes it easier to track these causes, the National Health Service estimates that $62 million is spent annually in treating 200,000 flip-flop related injuries.

F

WEAR YOUR FAVORITE FOOTWEAR AND STAY INJURY-FREE.

Those statistics don't mean you have to toss your flip-flops aside, but there are some important factors to keep in mind. Dr. Berman offers five tips for injury free flip-flop wearing this summer. 1. Limit wearing flip-flops to short periods of time. Flip-flops provide basic protection to the sole of the foot to walk around poolside or on a hot surface. They can also help prevent you from catching athlete's foot or plantar warts in public showers. But they aren't good for extensive walking because they offer no arch support, heel cushioning, or shock absorption, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). People who sport flip-flops for extended periods of

time can suffer foot pain due to lack of arch support, tendinitis, and even sprained ankles if they trip. 2. If the shoe fits, wear it. "Don't use a flip-flop as an athletic shoe because they're intended for just walking on flat surfaces," says Dr. Berman. "People who ran or jumped in flip-flops and suffered sprained ankles, fractures, and severe ligament injuries have required surgery." Also, people tend to wear their flip-flops long after the sandals have worn out, which further decreases support for the foot. 3. Don't wear flip-flops to cut the grass. Accidents can lead to emergency room visit for injuries from outdoor equipment. Wearing flimsy foot protection for yard work means a greater

risk for stubbed toes, glass cuts, puncture wounds, or having a heavy object hit your foot. 4. We all need some support. This type of sandal can cause problems that extend to the head, neck, and jaw because the wearer has to scrunch his or her toes to grip the thong at the wrong time in the gait cycle. The far part of your toe is trying to flex down to hold the flip-flop on, while the middle part of your toe is trying to flex up. This is the opposite of what your toes should be doing at that time. The action shortens natural stride, prevents the natural "locking" of your foot, and forces your hip and leg musculature to work harder, which results in other muscles shutting down. For example, hammer-toes (a condition in which the toes are bent in a claw-like position) are the result of years of compensation from the small foot muscles. Other resulting ailments include plantar fasciitis - a common cause of heel pain involving inflammation of tissue that runs across the bottom of the foot connecting heel bone to toes - to shin splints and metatarsalgia, which causes pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. 5. Keep the rubber off the metal. Flip-flops can actually lead to car accidents because they impair a driver's control if they come off the foot and lodge under the brake or gas pedal, according to the American Automobile Association. Make sure your driving footwear is not so loose that it pops off and interferes with the pedals.

TENNIS, EVERYONE? Is your child the next Serena Williams or Novak Djokovic? You might never know unless you introduce him or her to tennis on a public court near you this summer — for free! The CityParks Foundation will once again be sponsoring its tennis program for kids 5 to 16 in the five boroughs this summer at no charge, running from July 1 to Aug. 9. Last year, some 850 boys and girls participated in the program at one of four sites on Staten Island that will once again host the event. Kids can take the courts on Monday and Wednesday at Wolfs Pond Park (9 a.m.-noon) and Willowbrook Park (1-4 p.m.), and Tuesdays and Thursdays at Silver Lake Park (9 a.m.-noon) and Walker Park (1-4 p.m.). Instruction at Wolfs Pond won’t begin until July 10.

“Just show up,” said Billy Noonan who, besides serving as president of the Staten Island Tennis Association, runs the CityParks program on the Island. “You can sign up any time and go to as many sessions at as many sites as you want.” The CityParks Foundation is a private nonprofit that runs its program in conjunction with the city’s Department of Parks. Ages 5 to 8 are perfect to start to take up the game, Noonan said. It’s inexpensive — just sneakers and a $20 racket is all you need. “And if you don’t have a racket, we’ll loan you one,” Noonan said. Noonan feels that children in that age group are physically able to start to play and, because they are school-aged, their attention span is sufficient. “We try to organize the sessions so that the kids will have a good experience from the first day,” Noonan said. One way to help the younger players get started, Noonan said, is by modifying the size of the court. “The younger ones will play on a shorter court — maybe from service line to service line,” Noonan said. “As they get bigger and stronger, we will expand the court.” Besides the scaled-down court, there are also different tennis balls to help the younger players enjoy success: They can use a red ball, which is larger than a regular tennis ball and thus easier to hit; or an orange

ball that is lighter than a regular ball, making it also easier to hit because it doesn’t travel as fast or bounce as high. “A lot of programs are using the red and orange balls for this age,” Noonan said. CityParks isn’t the only option if your child catches the tennis bug, however. You can pay for private instruction at places like the Staten Island Community Tennis Center (call 718-982-3355) at the College of Staten Island and the Ed Perpetua Tennis Academy (www.eptatennis.com). Noonan also runs a private program at Silver Lake (http://statenislandtennislessons.com). “For kids 10 and under, I would advise professional help through one of the free or pay programs,” Noonan said. “Taking a few lessons will help them enjoy the sport more, until they build the skills that will allow them to play adequately. “Once they learn to rally (hit the ball back and forth with another player) and serve, they can start to play some games.”

The summer CityParks program ends with a novice tournament at Central Park in mid-August, when those who take part in the borough programs can show what they’ve learned in competitions against youngsters from the other boroughs. It’s only natural after that to maybe watch the pros compete in the U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens, Aug. 26Sept. 9. “Sometimes the kids get tickets to Arthur Ashe Kids Day,” Noonan said of the event that precedes the U.S. Open in Flushing and is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24 (see www.arthurashekidsday.com).

Summer Math Activities for your Children

Solid Advice on

Parents: When the school doors Improving close, most students lose about two Children’s Basic months of grade level equivalency in Skills and mathematical computation skills over Addressing the summer months according to the Parental Concerns National Summer Learning Association. To help keep your children’s math skills sharp, we are giving you a list of activities this month that will give them ongoing opportunities to practice these skills. Math Drill Activities If your children in elementary school and even middle school cannot answer basic fact problems in less than three seconds, some drill is in order. These facts, especially addition and multiplication, must be automatic for children in order for them to handle more advanced math easily. So this is your starting point for a summer of building math skills. Drilling activities can be done using flash cards, worksheets, computers and apps. You’ll find a wealth of free materials as well as suggestions using a search engine to find "math drills." Visit several websites with your children and bookmark the most appealing ones. Search on our website (dearteacher.com) for “math drills” and you’ll find several columns pointing out different ways to teach children basic math facts. If your children are truly struggling to learn the basic facts, you may wish to enroll them in a learning center, especially one that stresses the teaching of math. Beyond Drill Drill, even on the computer and other electronic devices, can be boring after a while. When this happens, both children with weak basic math skills and those who just need to keep their skills sharp should have fun playing math games that reinforce the learning of basic facts. Search online for "math games" and bookmark the ones your children like best. You'll also find suggestions on our website under “Learning Activities.” Math activities should not be confined to drill. Games like Monopoly, Dominoes and Twenty-one are great for older children, while much younger children can enjoy Uno, Go Fish and Bingo for number recognition. In fact, any game involving numbers and scorekeeping has children using their math skills. Mental Math Is Fun Doing mental math is an excellent way for children to show off their skills with numbers and to build new skills. Secrets of Mental Math is a great book for older children wanting to learn amazing math tricks such as finding out the day for any date, from their birthday to the Declaration of Independence.

Easy Mental Math Multiplication: All children know how to multiply by 10. Teach them that it's also easy to multiply by 5. All they have to do is multiply by 10 and then divide by 2. Then, to multiply a number by 25, they need to multiply by 100, which is adding 2 zeros to the end of the number being multiplied. Then to get the answer, they can either divide by 4 once or by 2 twice. Visit our website to find more easy mental math tricks in "Skill Builders." More Challenging Mental Math: Here's how to multiply a two-digit number by 11. Example, 11 x 24: Add the digits of 24 together and you get 6. Place the 6 between the 2 and 4 to get the answer 264. If the digits of the number to be multiplied by 11 add up to more than 9, there is another step you must take. Example, 11 x 75: Add the digits of 75 together and you get 12. Put the 2 between the numbers after adding the 1 to the first digit (7 + 1). The answer is 825. Silly and Challenging Math Puzzles Math puzzles can be fun. The following puzzles may be a bit silly, but they will challenge your children. The answers are at the end of the column. 1) How can you make half of 12 equal to 7? 2) In the schoolyard, there are 16 bicycles and tricycles. The total number of wheels is 39. How many tricycles are there? 3) How many 9’s are there between 1 and 100? 4) Use mathematical terms to answer these questions: What did Noah build? and What do you say when a parrot is dead? 5) 8,549,176,320 is like no other number. Why is that?

Perimeter and Area The perimeter (distance around an object) can be very simple to find or require quite advanced math concepts. Have your young children find the distance around a variety of things in your home: a door mat, a towel, the back yard or a table top. Your question always is: How far is it around the object? Then depending on their ages, children can measure using blocks, paper clips, steps, a finger or a measuring tool. Area is the surface inside a shape. Young children can find the area of a newspaper or table top by finding out how many sponges or playing cards are needed to completely cover the object. Older children should find the area of irregular figures by dividing them into squares and triangles and finding the area of each one and then adding the areas together. Answers to Math Puzzles (1) Write 12 as a Roman numeral, and draw a horizontal line through the middle. (2) 7 tricycles. (3) 20 (two 9’s in 99) (4) arc, polygon (5) It’s the only number having all of its digits in alphabetical order. Parents should send questions to dearteacher@dearteacher.com or ask them on the columnists’ website at www.dearteacher.com.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND FIREFLIES

ew things seem more whimsical and magical on a warm night than watching fireflies blink on and off and wondering where one will turn up next. At any given moment, there may be dozens of fireflies lighting up the night sky, providing the perfect opportunity for kids and adults to go outside and collect a few insects for a closer look.

F

The Smithsonian Institute says there are more than 2,000 species of fireflies, also called lightning bugs, around the world. Only some species produce adults that glow. Fireflies are a type of beetle that use their illuminated bottoms to attract females. Often the males will fly around while WHAT MAKES THESE FRAGILE “WONDERS OF SUMMER LIGHT UP? the females wait in bushes and trees for their mates to arrive. They use the light to deter predators and inform them that they do not taste good. While fireflies are often seen in a pleasing light and as harmless bugs, they may not be so harmless within their social circles. Some fireflies are carnivorous. Larvae eat snails and worms. Some fireflies feed on other fireflies and will mimic the flashing pattern of a certain species to lure in a meal. But scientists have not observed fireflies eating other species of bugs and are not even sure if fireflies eat much at all.

Use care when catching the fireflies, which are fragile. Working with a net is often better than bare hands, particularly for children who may not be so gentle. Only keep the fireflies for a day or two before letting them go. Otherwise you're bound to find a jar of deceased fireflies. According to the Firefly Organization, firefly numbers are dwindling, largely due to light pollution and overdevelopment. Human lights interrupt flashing light patterns. Therefore, any fireflies that are captured should be promptly returned to the wild.

inally—all of your hard work has paid off. You (or your child) have been accepted by a great college, and your fall deposit has been sent in. Now what? You might be tempted to kick back and enjoy a leisurely summer, blissfully free of homework, standardized-test prep, and responsibility in general. Or, if you’re more a type-A personality, you might be running around like a chicken without a head, so frazzled by the prospect of getting ready for college that you end up unable to check anything off your growing todo list.

F

FOLLOW THESE SEVEN NOW FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION.

No matter where you’re going to college, there are several things you can do to help the transition—both social and academic—go smoothly. Here, according to Professors Lynn F. Jacobs and Jeremy S. Hyman are seven best things to do the summer before you start college: #1 Get to orientation—early. Unless your future alma mater is the exception to the rule, you’ll have the opportunity to visit campus for an orientation session sometime during the summer. Typically these are day-long affairs in which students and their parents can tour the campus, learn more about the school, and visit with a few faculty members and academic advisers. Depending on your college, you may even be able to sign up for courses. (Ideally, make sure it’s you doing the picking and not your parents!) #2 Get some hardware. If you take a walk around a typical college campus, you’ll still see some students taking notes the old-fashioned way, with a notebook and pen. But increasingly, various types of electronic devices are appearing in

classrooms…and they’re definitely being used in dorm rooms to do research, write papers, put together presentations, etc. The point is, if you don’t already have a computer—preferably a laptop, tablet, or e-reader—now’s the time to get one. (Before buying, though, double-check your college’s policies—some schools issue laptops to students, and others recommend that students purchase specific brands and models.) If you opt for a laptop, whether you choose a PC or Mac, we think your computer should weigh no more than three or four pounds and have at least a six-hour battery life. You don’t want to break your back carrying a laptop to class or to the library, and you definitely don’t want it to run out of power in the middle of a lecture. We also recommend laptops with a webcam and good speakers (if nothing else, your parents will appreciate being able to Skype with you), and that have a fullsize (or at least 92 percent of full-size) keyboard. #3 Get some software. Once you’ve decided which computer you’ll be taking to college, it’s time to think about software. No

matter what you’re studying, it’s a fair bet that you’ll have to write papers—so a word processing program is a must. Microsoft Word is the college standard, though many students like the free OpenOffice or LibreOffice alternatives. If you’re buying more task-specific software—say, for your business, graphic design, or urban planning course—we strongly recommend that you hold off until your course has started and your instructor tells you what to buy. It’d be a shame to spend $329 on the wrong program, only to find that it’s nonreturnable. #4 Surf the college website. Sure, you’ve flipped through glossy brochures, watched the exciting propaganda videos, and maybe even been on a campus tour or two while you were applying to college. But now that you’ve been accepted, it’s time to take a second, more in-depth look at your college—especially concerning the academic side of things. First, go to the college portal of the university you’ll be attending and look for the academics or for current students tabs. Then search for the college requirements, the list of majors and minors, the individual departmental home pages (where you might even find syllabuses for the courses offered), and the course schedule (the actual list of courses to be offered in the fall—not to be confused with the course catalog, which is the list of every course ever offered at the school).

46

#5 Dust off your language skills and crack open a few books. Many colleges— especially those with liberal arts curriculums—have a foreign or world language requirement, often a foursemester sequence in a language of your choice (although you may be able to test out of all or part of these classes). Now would be a good time to brush up on a language you learned in high school or speak around the house. If your summer plans include travel abroad, and if your second-language skills are up to the challenge, resolve to speak only the language of the country from touchdown to return home.

#6 Reach out to your roommate. It’s always a good idea to find out with whom you’re going to be sharing your digs for the next nine months or so. If you’re planning to live on campus, your college may be sending you all sorts of information about your assigned roommate, but even if they don’t, you can check him or her out on your own. You don’t have to scour www.backgroundchecks.com or www.beenverified.com; a simple Google search or glance at his or her Facebook page should give you a little dirt—er, information—provided your roommate hasn’t set the privacy settings too high (which is a fact about the roommate, too). Of course, you could also do things the oldfashioned way and pick up the phone, too! #7 Pursue your passion. The summer before college is one of the last times you’ll be able to do what you most enjoy doing for 100 percent of the time. (After all, summer jobs, internships, or extra courses might lie ahead!) Getting in touch with your true passion—and cultivating it without the demands of school—will put you in a really good and motivated mood for college in the fall. And, with any luck, it’ll interest you in taking an elective course in Tolstoy, marketing, or civil engineering that you’ll actually look forward to going to. Actually, that’s one of the big secrets of college success—lining up what you want to do with what you have to do. If you succeed at this, you will succeed at college. When it comes to doing well in college, knowledge really is power. Knowing what to expect and being prepared to hit the ground running can mean the difference between confidence and uncertainty, seized and missed opportunities, and success or failure. So don’t wait—put your summer to good use! Next Month: Conquering Crunch Time: Fifteen Things to Do the Week Before College By Jeremy S. Hyman, co-author with Lynn F. COVER STORY

DISCOVER STATEN ISLAND HISTORY With Your Children This Summer

A

s a parent, what is the first thing you think of when you hear the word history? For many it will be struggling to stay awake as a child sitting in the classroom reading the text of a history book. I know when I think of history from my childhood, that is my immediate memory. Not many of my teachers back then would ever believe I would be doing historical research and writing today. What changed? My love of travel exposed me to so many places where history came alive, so that once home on Staten Island I began looking into the rich history that was in my own back yard. Now, I am hooked on history, and continue to learn more and more! When history becomes what it truly is, a collection of stories of people, events, and places in the past, it is far from boring. It is a way to time travel to the past to see how others lived, what was important to them, and how they experienced the emotions of life that we all share. This humanizing of history makes it come to life and stay with us. Benjamin Franklin explained the value of experience in learning. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” So let me become your historical travel guide to help you to discover a little bit of the wealth of Staten Island history with your children this summer by sharing a few highlights. Involve them not as if it is a school assignment, but as something interesting to explore, and I promise that both you and they will have fun in the process, hungering for more. Let’s start with Benjamin Franklin. Did you know that as one of the Founding Fathers of our nation, he came to Staten Island to try to gain our independence from Great Britain at a peace conference to prevent the Revolutionary War?

This peace conference, however, was destined to fail, since the colonial delegates only had the authority to work for peace through independence from England, while Lord Howe, the King’s representative, had instructions that the King would never allow the colonies their freedom. At the Conference House this summer during July and August, children, ages 6 to 10, can further experience colonial times, learning calligraphy, embroidery, knitting, gardening, candle making, cooking 18th Century style, and more. Richmond Town’s history is equally fascinating. The town began in the 1600’s as a crossroad among Staten Island farms with its central location, growing into the government center of Richmond in the 1700’s. The Third County Court House, built in 1837, added to the importance of the area, as local businesses grew around it, until the end of the 1800’s when the rest of Staten Island surpassed it in growth. In 1898, when Staten Island became part of New York City, St. George became the new center of government due to its nearness to Manhattan. However, Richmond Town in the 1930’s became the center of the preservation movement. The former County Clerk’s and Surrogate’s office became the first museum. In the 1950’s the Historical Society contracted with New York City to develop a museum village, moving other buildings to Richmond Town. Today there are 27 buildings within the village. This summer on July 4th, from 11am to 5pm, Richmond Town will host an Independence Day Celebration. You can help to churn ice cream, watch a pie-baking demonstration, enter your own pie in a contest against the “colonial” cooks, and meet villagers from the 1800’s and earlier. By Angie Mangino, a Staten Island writer, former Staten Island Woman in History, and COAHSI grant recipient for her Tottenville history work • www.AngieMangino.com

On September 11, 1776, Benjamin Franklin, with John Adams, Edward Rutledge, and a British hostage, left Perth Amboy, New Jersey to meet with Admiral Lord Richard Howe inside the Conference House to attempt a compromise. Before the war, Lord Howe and Benjamin Franklin were friends in London. Franklin introduced Adams and Rutledge to Howe as they sat around the table for three hours. Howe tried to convince the colonists to be part of the British Empire, while the delegates reminded Howe that the colonies voted for independence after past indignities, hoping to convince him that an independent nation would benefit England.

SAVE OR SPLURGE?

orporate spending on marketing and advertising is the number-one reason namebrand products are pricier than store brands. Since buying store-brand items can save consumers up to 30 percent, some parents may be inclined to go all-generic. However, some name-brand products are actually better values than their generic counterparts. Here's a handy reference list to help you determine when to save and when to splurge.

C

SAVE: Sunscreen This summertime essential is an important purchase and many consumers perceive WHEN TO BUY GENERIC AND WHEN TO STICK WITH NAME BRANDS. generic brands as inferior quality. However, effective the capacity of name-brand counterparts. Nothing will ruin sunscreen has two primary components: broad-spectrum your day quicker than a trash-bag blowout over your carpet. To coverage and avobenzone as the active ingredient. As long as save on this household staple, buy them in bulk from the product contains these, you can skip the pricey namewarehouse club stores for 30-percent less than grocery stores. brands and get the same protection. SPLURGE: Condiments Another summer staple, name-brand condiments fare better in taste tests than store-brand options. If you slather your New York strip in steak sauce, there's no sense (or cents) in choking down the generic brand for the sake of savings. SAVE: Printer Ink Thanks to special technology, printer brands practically force us to buy their marked-up replacement ink. Some printers require name-brand ink to operate, but for those that don't, compatible and remanufactured cartridges are the way to go. You can easily find cheap ink through Inkjet Willy, which compares the price and cost-per-page for hundreds of cartridges. SPLURGE: Trash Bags Generic brands of trash bags are often less durable and lack

SAVE: Spices At some point, everyone has cringed at the $4 price of a bottle of oregano. But what is the chemical difference between generic and name-brand spices, sugar and flour? If you think there isn't one, you're right. The primary difference is price, so put down that schmancy brand of cumin and give the store brand a try. SPLURGE: Paper Products The last thing you want to fall apart is toilet paper, making it and other paper products a better name-brand buy. Generic brands contain less fibers and are therefore less absorbent than brand names. Stock up during sale time at the beginning of the month and be sure to stack store and manufacturer coupons for big savings. SAVE: Over-the-counter Medication When it comes to medication, most consumers feel

recognizable brands are the safest. That's why brand names often include the term "trust" in their marketing campaigns. However, the FDA requires that all generic meds be as effective and safe as the name-brand drugs. In fact, close to 50-percent of generic-brand medications are manufactured by brand-name companies, so there's no reason to pay 30-percent more for your ibuprofen. Provided by Andrea Woroch, a nationally-recognized consumer and money-saving expert who helps consumers live on less without radically changing their lifestyles.

We asked our Facebook Friends what products they felt warranted a brand name purchase. The big winner? Bounty paper towels! Here’s what else we found out: Michael De Simone Ph.D, LCSW

TAMARA COSENTINO is pretty flexible about most products, but won’t compromise the quality of her cheesecake. For that, only Philadelphia cream cheese will do. Oh, and Bounty paper towels (of course!) Most parents do a great job of introducing young children to books. A recent report from the Pew Research Center found that over half of all parents read to their young children everyday and another 26% read several times a week.

Nurturing a Passion for Reading

Around middle school, many young readers become alliterate. They can read but they don’t. The reasons for this disconnect are numerous. Middle school kids become involved in an increased number of extracurricular activities, especially sports. Schoolwork becomes more demanding so reading seems less like fun. And, of course, the siren call of social media discourages attention to text that’s longer than a sentence or two. Whatever the reason, alliteracy is worrisome. Research suggests that young people who read for pleasure have an advantage. Their vocabularies are bigger. Their powers of concentration and analysis are greater. They tend to be better writers. And they have a deeper understanding of other people and the world around them. Of course, lecturing kids about the importance of literacy isn’t likely to turn them into enthusiastic readers. Here are some suggestions that are likely to be more effective:

Take e-books seriously. The fourth edition of the Kids & Family Reading Report, released by Scholastic earlier this year, found that half of children 9-17 said they would read more books for fun if they had e-books. Boys in particular seem more motivated to read on a screen. If your children have already become Screenagers, help them develop good habits. The only way to get lost in a book is to defer the urge to fool with apps and check social media. Don’t give up on print. Among the kids in the Scholastic survey who use e-books, 80% still did most of their for-fun reading in print. If your child no longer cares to go the library, pick up books and leave them on the kitchen counter. Get inexpensive copies of classic books by going to garage sales or library sales. Websites like betterworldbooks.com also make it easy to acquire gently used books for your home library. Offer variety. As pre-teens begin to discover their special abilities and interests, help them zero in on fiction and non-fiction that connects with their passions. Expose them to cookbooks, graphic novels, newspapers, special interest magazines, and travel guides. Social media is an especially good way to find books with pre-teen appeal. Just putting “good books for middle schoolers” into the

search box at Pinterest pulls up excellent lists curated by other parents, educators and even librarians. Carve out time. Some middle school students stop reading because they don’t have much free time. Help your child be selective about activities. Establish a daily reading time when you turn off TV and even music. Power down cellphones too. At the very least, establish NBBBB – Nothing but Books Before Bedtime. Be lenient about lights out if your child is engrossed in a good read. Designate space. If possible, create a dedicated reading room or corner in your home. Have a comfy chair, a good light, and a bookshelf close at hand. Be sure it’s free of digital distractions. Read together. Hold onto family reading rituals as long as you can. In her book, The Reading Promise, Alice Ozma, national manager for reading programs Scholastic, writes about how she and her father read together for 3218 days before she went to college. As she puts it, “Good authors find the words for the things we feel deeply but cannot express. They open conversations.” Anything that opens a thoughtful conversation with a pre-teen is worth doing. Make it social. If you’re excited about what you’re reading, you’ll want to talk to other people about it. That’s what makes book groups so popular. Unfortunately, middle schools students sometimes feel anxious about admitting to their peers that they have a reading habit. You can try to influence the culture at your child’s school by encouraging teachers to form book clubs (suggestions about how to do that are available at the Great Schools website, http://tinyurl.com/83cucw9). Or you can encourage your child to find like-minded peers at social media sites dedicated to reading. Goodreads.com, for example, lets members join and form age-appropriate book groups. Practice what you preach. If you want your kids to be readers, be one yourself. Let them see you reading and enjoying a wide variety of books. Text a quote that catches your attention to your child’s phone. Share interesting ideas you’ve come across in your reading at dinnertime or when you’re driving together. Given the number of distractions available to children today, parents can’t be certain their kids will become lifelong readers. Still, there are enduring benefits for young people who can engage with the characters in fiction and follow the arguments in non-fiction. Helping your child develop a satisfying, ongoing relationship with books is still one of the best ways to prepare them for whatever the future may hold. GLUTEN SENSITIVITY: A Growing Problem?

There is a significant degree of confusion when it comes to recognizing the difference between three conditions: celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, and wheat allergy. The basis for all three is a reaction to gluten- a protein component of wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten sensitivity (GS) may be defined broadly as a spectrum of disorders, which include celiac disease and wheat allergy. In both, gluten has an adverse effect on the body. The symptoms of GS include, but are not limited to abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, weight loss or failure to thrive, joint pain, muscular disturbances, headache, and fatigue. Celiac disease is a more clearly defined condition within the spectrum of GS, where the genetic and immunologic essays for it are well developed. Along with these essays, a biopsy of the intestinal mucosa must be conducted as the ultimate diagnostic test, whenever celiac disease is suspected. Non-celiac disease GS can be defined as a combination of symptoms usually shared by celiac disease, wheat allergy, and irritable bowel syndrome, but celiac disease and wheat allergy are eliminated as possible diagnoses, based on an appropriate work up. This work up may be done through your child’s primary doctor, pediatric gastroenterologist, or a pediatric allergist service. While both celiac disease and wheat allergy represent adaptive immune responses (autoimmune in the case of celiac disease), and may be classified as delayed hypersensitivities by nature, non-celiac GS is an innate response, e.g. a reaction which is congenital (children are born with it), immediate in nature, and lacking an immunologic memory. Non-celiac GS is less severe in its expression, and does not produce any morphological changes in the gastrointestinal mucosal lining (a feature of celiac disease). Children with non-celiac GS will not test positive for celiac disease with the currently used immunological blood tests, and a mucosal biopsy.

64

JULY 2013

www.siparent.com

Allergies, particularly those to wheat, are recognized by a positive immunoglobulin serologic essay, and/or a skin prick test usually done by a pediatric allergist. While all patients with celiac disease and non-celiac GS must restrict their diets of any source of gluten (wheat, ray and barley), those who only have a wheat allergy should avoid wheat only.

Currently, there is no reliable test to detect non-celiac GS. If the clinical picture reflects that there is possible gluten sensitivity, the only way to prove or disprove this is through a strict gluten elimination diet. Conditions such as irritable bowl syndrome, chronic headaches, chronic fatigue, and arthralgias can justify a high index of suspicion of GS. A clear differentiation of these three clinical entities within the spectrum of GS is the first, important step in the approach to your child’s health problem, which is possibly related to sensitivity to gluten. There is a significant growth in the incidence of celiac disease. At least two recent immunological studies have compared samples obtained 50 years ago from military recruits to a matched group of modern-day young people. There was a 400-450% increase in prevalence of celiac disease in the latter sample. The cause of this increase is debatable. Possible triggers include modern changes in the breadmaking process, plant breeding, breastfeeding trends, rise in cesarean birth, and the excessive use of antibiotics, which could result in a change of intestinal microflora. It is also estimated that close to 1% of the US population has celiac disease, but only 10% of those who have it are diagnosed. On the other hand, because there are no biomarkers for non-celiac GS and wheat allergy, it is impossible to conduct any retrospective study to compare the prevalence of either of these two conditions. In conclusion, the three types of GS should be recognized and distinguished based on a clinical presentation and an appropriate work up. A gluten free diet is becoming easier to uphold now due to a wider availability of gluten free products and public awareness. Discuss the possibility of your child having GS with your primary doctor as soon as possible, for a simple solution to your child’s medical condition may be achieved by dietary modifications. Tips for Keeping your Baby’s Skin Safe this Summer and for a Lifetime By NY Dermatologist Joshua Fox "Babies' skin is thinner than adults and therefore absorbs the UV rays even more rapidly than adults' skin," Dr. Fox explains. "In addition, human skin develops melanin, the pigment which gives color to skin, over time. Babies have less melanin than adults and this is another reason they have less protection from the sun."

Reviews

SRP $28.00$375.99 www.storkstack.com Stork Stack is a subscription plan available in one to twelve month increments, which delivers all the essentials your child needs right to your doorstep. They also offer a Shower Stack, teeming with infant necessities to indulge the new bundle of joy!

SnoozeShade SRP $29.99-$99.99 www.snoozeshadeusa.com SnoozeShades are the perfect protection from the sun. Available for strollers, infant car seats, and playards, they provide shade so your little one is protected from the sun and are 100% breathable.

Moboleez Breastfeeding Hats SRP $29.00 • www.moboleez.com It’s the perfect accessory for mommies who are breastfeeding their babies outdoors. Available in five stylish designs, Moboleez breastfeeding hats are the modern, alternative nursing cover.

Comfy Cradle SRP $25.00 • www.comfy-cradle.com Comfy Cradle gently supports your child, keeps your arms comfortable, and provides a soft spot to rest your elbow. The Comfy Cradle wraps around your arm to keep both baby and mom comfortable during feeding time.

TIPS FOR INFANTS 0-6 MONTHS: • Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of the sun altogether when possible. • Use removable mesh window shields in the car, or UV window film to block ultraviolet radiation from entering the car. • Walk with your baby before 10 am or after 4 pm. A sun protective cover on the stroller will help block the damaging sun rays from baby even further. • Dress baby in clothing that is lightweight, but covers the legs and arms. • Select a wide-brimmed hat to protect the baby’s face, ears, and neck. “If you put a hat on your baby in the first few months of life, she will get used to wearing it,” Dr. Fox offers. TIPS FOR BABIES 6-12 MONTHS: • It is safe to use sunscreen. It is important to continue all the above precautions as well. • Dr. Fox reinforces the need for a minimum of a broad-spectrum, SPF +15 sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. • Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and then reapply every two hours or after swimming or excess sweating. Apply to any areas left uncovered by clothing.

JULY 2013

www.siparent.com

Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.

Parenting Challenges Ahead? Mom used to say she thought getting me off the bottle and pacifier was tough. She recalls how she used to try to “trick” me by telling me to give it to some friend’s baby, or saying that the garbage man took them away. I can’t believe I fell for that stuff! And then there was potty training – also a challenging feat. “I started a bit too soon with you,” she says now. Nothing like spending a year juggling diapers, Pull-ups, and “big-girl panties” to teach you some patience, she sarcastically comments.

Mom also mentioned there was quite a span of time between the time I was 6 months old and 5 (!!!) when sleeping through the night presented a few, shall we say, issues. Alas, with a “there’s-nothingelse-to-do-but-deal-with-it” mentality, my parents stuck by me. I still don’t sleep well, but as least I entertain myself vs. Mom or Dad having to come in and hug me or drive me around the block in order to fall asleep like they used to! There were a few “easy” years in between, Mom mentions, but she says that the last few months are starting to pick up a bit in the perplexing category. Apparently, the questions I’ve been starting to fire at her have taken her off-guard. They are nothing too crazy, just random observations about the world around me now that I’m almost double digits in age. Her initial reply? A raised eyebrow with a follow-up question to my question: “Why are you asking me that?” (I think that’s “Mom code” for “I’m not sure how to answer this just yet.”) She said she’s going to order me a few books that can help her chat with me about getting older, growing up, and how to start deciphering the confusing world around me more clearly. I can tell she’s not too happy about it, though; I definitely sense a conflict there. While I know my parents enjoy me no matter what stage I’m in, I’ve been picking up on a mixture of nostalgia and worry for what’s ahead. I’m not sure what the big deal is just yet, but I told my Mom and Dad to just relax. I’m still me… just in a little bigger body, with a way bigger mind. They both just smile and nod but I can tell they are apprehensive, along with my friends’ parents. It’s kind of funny how us kids can have that type of effect on our moms and dads. From what I understand, this is just the tip of the iceberg…. Lucky them!

Staten Islanders Giavanna & Gina Schrecker invite you to write to them at editorial@siparent.com or post to www.facebook.com/siparent

FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
