LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Friends of S.I. Parent, You can feel it in the air— Summer is here! It is the time for parents to smile and relax a little as they look ahead to life without a school schedule for the next two months. Vacation time often allows a family to enjoy the simple things— a bike ride or a walk together, planning a local day trip midweek, or just taking a car ride to get Italian Ices on a warm summer's night. We think July should have a “relax and reconnect” theme. There are tons of events to choose from throughout the summer here on Staten Island. Please visit our website often as we are constantly adding and updating our calendar. We’ve listed local fireworks shows, fairs, festivals, carnivals, concerts, movies in the parks and $1 movies in the theatres, and any other information we could get our hands on so you can access it quickly and all in one place—siparent.com. Then, turn off the electronics and reconnect with those loved ones! If you are planning to visit a waterpark this summer, our article on page 42 has a lot of good tips. Search “Summertime Articles” on siparent.com and you’ll find more safety tips and important information to guarantee a great day outdoors. Let us know on Facebook.com/siparent which parks you like and why. It’s a great place to network and share your opinions with other Staten Island parents. Enter our Summer Fun Giveaway and you could win tickets for a family day—how great would that be?! Even though the academic school year is over, it is important to be sure our children continue to read and learn throughout the summer. In our Dear Teacher column, there are some great ideas to infuse the arts into your children's lives this summer. Summertime learning can enhance next year’s success. Learn how by reading 7 Tips for Avoiding Summer Learning Loss. Another opportunity that summer offers is a more relaxed atmosphere, one where your children can see you reading for recreation and hopefully model that behavior. The simple joy of reading together with your children can foster a lifelong pleasant memory and well, isn’t that what we are all striving for? One of my favorite activities is a trip to the library—there’s always an age-appropriate program or workshop to join. Those are listed in our online calendar. I have bittersweet news to share with you. Ann Clinton, a wonderful writer and Staten Island grandmother who has provided our Parent and Child column since 1996, has decided to retire the column. This month as a tribute we are reprinting Ann’s first column. We have appreciated her wisdom and stories over the years. I know that everyone who has followed her column will miss hearing the tales of her family! Ann, thank you for being a special member of our S.I. Parent team. We always feel it is important to give a friendly reminder this time of year. As you enjoy the warmth of the summer and perhaps more pool and beach time, please remember to diligently keep an eye on your children. Tragedies often can be avoided if we just stay focused on where our children are at all times. Happy July and thanks for being loyal readers of S.I. Parent. Please always thank our advertisers for supporting what we do; they make it possible for us to bring you the resources you need for your family.

summer Concert series How’d you like to enjoy some music under the stars this summer? Of course you would! That’s why Borough President James S. Oddo and Council Members Vincent Ignizio, Steven Matteo, and Deborah Rose are pleased to announce the line up for this year’s summer concert series. The “Sunset Concert” series will kick off Thursday, July 10 at Seaside Wildlife Nature Park from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The series will continue every Thursday until September 4 in various parks throughout the Island. Some of the many performers include Rachel Isaac’s Band, Gifford’s Lane, The Silas Knight Project, and the Staten Island Community Band.
Back to the Beach It’s baaack- to the beach, that is! One of the Borough President’s most popular programs is returning this summer for a fun-filled weekend of entertainment. This year’s “Back to the Beach” celebration will be held at Midland Beach Promenade on July 12 and 13. The BP has teamed up with The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund to make this year’s celebration better than ever. “Many Staten Islanders look forward to Back to the Beach. It’s a pleasure to be able to bring the event back with the Bini Fund,” Oddo said. Featuring vendors, food, live music, and more, Back to the Beach will run from 12 to 8 p.m. both days.
$1 movies A buck can’t get you much these day but all summer long it can get you to the movies! Regal Entertainment Group will be hosting the 2014 Summer Movie Express for 9 weeks during the summer with select titles

indoor “Beach” Play Boosts sensory skills Diane Campione has once again opened the Huguenot Library Branch to the community while creating a splendid “Day at the Beach” for the children of P.S. 8. Genine Melani teaches a self-contained class of 1st and 2nd graders and was ecstatic to bring her students to the library for this multisensory and multidisciplinary program which she described as a “visual wonderland.” As the children immersed themselves in the sand, sparkles, water play, and mock outdoor living, they developed their skills while creating lasting memories. This is only one of the many programs Diane has created for our children with special needs. She is indeed one special lady!

Hurricane Sandy Relief Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a bill that will provide almost $4 million in tax relief to Hurricane Sandy victims who had to make repairs to their homes.“To tax people on changes to their home that they were forced to make because of a storm that was out of their control would literally add insult to injury,” Cuomo said. The bill is in response to a law that would have raised the tax level for homeowners who made repairs after the storm. Now tax rates will be pushed back to pre-storm levels and people will not be charged for increased square footage from repairs. The bill will be reflected in July’s bills and will remain in effect through 2015.

7 TIPS FOR AVOIDING SUMMER LEARNING LOSS ur O t u O k Chec TO BACK L SCHOOTORY DIREC 60 on page
ummertime is usually one of the best times of the year for students and their families. The scholastically carefree days of summer can serve to provide students with a needed break from school. But students who take a complete break from learning over the months of summer can lose up to two to three months of learning while their brains are resting from their previous curriculum. By contrast, students who spend five to seven hours a week learning can improve their scholastic knowledge by three or more months.

A FEW MINUTES A DAY SPENT ON SUMMERTIME LEARNING COULD MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR CHILD'S SUCCESS NEXT YEAR.
One summer learning myth that needs to be dispelled is that learning can’t be fun in order for it to be effective. Summertime learning should be fun and can help students gain interest in learning new concepts while reviewing previously learned core concepts. Students who spend a few hours a week reviewing their current curriculum concepts and looking ahead to next year’s curriculum typically find their diligence paying off in the upcoming school year. This is because they have created a useable foundational base to help them absorb and retain more information when core concepts are introduced in their classes. Here are a few tips for parents looking to make the most out of their child’s school year: 1. During the summer, students typically benefit from designing a flexible learning schedule that can be broken down into smaller intervals, such as twenty-minute segments three times a day. Others might enjoy learning for thirty- minute sessions twice a day, or an hour once a day—do what works for you and your schedule!

2. Subjects that have been the most consistently difficult for the student should be given the most time. Key learning concepts in a specific subject area can generally be found online, in library books, or in workbooks from a teacher supply store. Pre-learning important key concepts can make the upcoming fall classes easier to understand and enable the student to perform better in the class. 3. Mathematical subjects consist of concepts that build upon themselves throughout the school year. Therefore, students should review and practice three or four math problems and procedures each day. One or more math problems should review the previous math class notes and formulas. Others should address new mathematical concepts, vocabulary, and formulas they will be learning in the fall, found through online search, grade level workbooks or teacher recommendations. 4. Students can also benefit from reviewing and looking at upcoming vocabulary terms—and not just for English class! Students will be more able to comprehend class lectures in math, science, and other classes at a higher level when they know the terms incorporated in the lessons. Use flash cards to play learning quiz games with family or friends and include everyone!

5. Literacy and reading comprehension skills can be improved over the summer in students who read a minimum of two classical literature books over the months of vacation. As the student encounters words that they don’t understand, they should look the word up. The student can also use the phonetic spelling to help him or her decode words, writing the meaning down on paper or a flash card to review later. Reading aloud daily to a parent, sibling, or friend can additionally help improve a student’s reading fluency skills at a steady rate. 6. When reading for knowledge, students often complain of reading the same paragraph or page with very little recall of the key concepts or ideas. Students who need a boost in their reading comprehension skills can benefit from jotting down a few key words or phrases as each paragraph is read. The notes serve as a review and help students’ reading comprehension skills improve.

7. Students can improve their written language skills during the summer by constructing one or more creative writing paragraphs. They may want to write about topics they will be learning in their fall classes or special summer activities, vacations, or time spent with their families. Adding adjectives and adverbs helps students’ written skills improve. Then the student should edit and improve their creative writing paragraph several times to add clarity, interest, and depth of thought. Even if it’s only for an hour a day, summertime learning can help prevent your son or daughter from learning loss associated with taking a complete scholastic break. The hour of learning daily can also help students meet academically challenges in the upcoming school year and can help them become academic winners!

GOOD SPORTS by Joe LoVerde
What’s the fastest-growing youth sport on Staten Island? If you said anything but flag football, you’d be wrong.

In less than 10 years, it has gone from virtually zero participation to some 3,000 boys and girls playing the sport in this borough. And the high schools have caught on too, as the Public Schools Athletic League started a league in the spring for girls.
FLAG FOOTBALL SCORES BIG ON STATEN ISLAND
Can college opportunities in the sport be far behind? “We’d love to see that,” said Rich Milo of Princes Bay, the vice president of the 9/11 Flag Football League that has played a big role in the sport’s explosion here. Unlike tackle football, youth flag football is a non-contact sport. There are seven players on the field, and the only equipment necessary are cleats, a mouthpiece and a flag belt. Instead of tackling or tagging the ball carrier with two hands as in touch football, a defender must remove the flag from the ball carrier’s flag belt. And because it’s non-contact, there is no weight limit as there is in the youth tackle leagues, meaning every child can play. “A lot of kids aren’t built for tackle,” Milo said. Rocco DelPriore of New Dorp can relate. He was too heavy as a child to play tackle in his age limit and loves the opportunity flag football gives to all kids. “I’m a big fan of it,” he said.
AMERICAN KARATE OF STATEN ISLAND SPECIALIZING IN CHILDREN AGES 3 & UP
DelPriore is a tackle football guy. He played at Monsignor Farrell HS and has been a coach at Farrell since he was 18. Now 27, he’s Farrell’s junior varsity head coach, but also a physical education teacher at New Dorp HS, where he was chosen to head the school’s first girls’ flag football team. The only difference with the high school leagues, he noted, is that there is blitzing and blocking allowed. “I love it for the tackle kids because they are working on skills needed to compete in high school and college,” said DelPriore, also an official with the 9/11 league.

These days, DelPriore explained, run, run, run schoolboy football is passé. Now the game involves spreading out four or five receivers.

“My kids love it,” said Denise DiBerardino, whose 15-year-old daughter Lucia and 10-year-old son Antonio both play in the 9/11 league.

“It used to be a north and south game, but it’s becoming east to west,” DelPriore said. “You’ve got to be able to cover every inch of the field.” He said flag football is the perfect training method for that kind of tackle game. “You’re teaching the same skills as for tackle,” he said. “Body position, rotate hips … it all translates.” All the kids care about, however, is that it’s fun.
Lucia, who plays basketball at St. John Villa and plans to play lacrosse there
next season, got interested by watching Antonio’s games. She joined the flag football league in third grade and plays quarterback for an all-girls’ team that competes against the boys. “Now I have it in my blood, too,” said Denise. The 9/11 league got its start in 2006 when Mike Fidanza, a retired police sergeant from Huguenot, didn’t want his then-7-year-old son, Michael, to play tackle. Michael’s cousin played flag football in a league in Seaford, Long Island. “He said to me, ‘Why not try to start flag football on Staten Island,’” recalled Mike, the league president. That first year, he was able to find 75 kids for 10 teams. He was at the twin towers on 9/11 and thought naming the league in honor of those who died that day would be a fitting tribute. This past season, some 2,500 boys and girls from pre-K through high school competed in the 9/11 league. Registration for the fall begins this month (go to 911ffl.org for information), and the number of participants figures to grow as it has every season. “Our only issue,” Milo said, “is getting places to play.” The 9/11 league plays at Bloomingdale Park, as well as Moore Catholic, New Dorp, Tottenville and Susan Wagner high schools. It isn’t the only game in town, either. For instance, the United Sports Youth League (www.usyl.org) offers competition in three boroughs, including Staten Island. DelPriore feels the sport is primed for even more growth. “Families go each week to see Johnny play, and parents realize their daughters can play with the boys,” DelPriore said. “There’s no real contact, just setting picks like in basketball, and rare that there are serious injuries.” And, as a phys ed teacher, he loves one other benefit. “The kids are sprinting up and down the field,” he said. “It’s a great workout.”

SUMMER: Time to Relax, Not Stress Out
chool’s finally out and the kids are home, so it’s time for the family to relax and enjoy the long days, the sunshine, the break from routine. Right? Well, maybe for the kids, but then why are you not feeling so carefree? Why are you tense and anxious? The truth is that summer's unstructured time often has a stressful, rather than stressfree, effect.

GLUTEN-FREE DOESN'T MEAN GRAIN-FREE
any people are adopting gluten-free diets for a variety of reasons. While such a diet means passing on foods that contain wheat protein, such as certain breads, crusts and baked goods, it doesn't mean giving up on grains entirely. Many grains are acceptable for those adhering to a gluten-free diet, and such grains can help fill the void left by avoiding wheat products.
M
Gluten-free foods are required for people who have Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition of the small intestines that is triggered by the consumption of wheat protein. Celiac disease can cause damage to the lining of the small intestines, which results in a decreased absorption of nutrients. This can cause vitamin deficiencies that deprive the body and brain of necessary nourishment.
PEOPLE FOLLOWING A REDUCED OR GLUTEN-FREE DIET CAN ENJOY A NUMBER OF OTHER ALTERNATIVES IN THEIR COOKING.
While people with Celiac disease have to avoid foods that contain gluten, many more people choose to remove gluten from their diets. This includes people with gluten allergies or sensitivities that are not as severe as Celiac disease but can cause some gastrointestinal discomfort. The relationship between gluten and certain behavioral problems in children and adults also has been studied. In a paper titled "Developmental Disorders and Dairy Products, Grains, Gluten and Other Proteins," researchers at the Bamford-Lahey Children's Foundation found that sensitivity to proteins in both dairy and wheat has been associated with a number of neurological and behavioral disorders in groups of adults and children.
form it can take the place of pasta. In its roasted form, buckwheat takes on a nutty flavor.
To avoid gluten, a person has to remove wheat products, barley, spelt, rye, and triticale from his or her diet. However, there are many other foods that can be eaten. Plus, flours made from grinding other grains can be used in place of wheat flour in recipes. The finished products may just have less of the doughy or elastic consistency that is a hallmark of gluten. Here are some grains men and women on glutenfree diets can still enjoy.
Montina: This is made from Indian rice grass and can be milled into flour or combined with other flours in a baking blend. Montina bakes up into a springy texture, which makes it popular in breads.
Oats: Though they are traditionally gluten-free, oats are often processed on the same equipment that processes other grains. Therefore, there may be some cross-contamination. Oats that are certified gluten-free can be more costly.
Corn: Cornmeal can be used in baked goods. However, it will offer a grainy texture.
Buckwheat: Despite the name, buckwheat is not related to regular wheat and is not exactly a grain. It is a relation of rhubarb. In its whole

Millet: This is a seeded plant used for grain and cereal production. Millet is typically sold in pet stores as a treat for birds. Millet is generally flavorless and can be grainy. It can be mixed with other gluten-free flours. Quinoa: This is not a grass plant or cereal grain but is actually related to leafy vegetables. Quinoa is often eaten like you would eat rice or pasta, but it can also be baked into bread and cakes.
Rice: Many people avoiding gluten turn to rice as an alternative. Rice flour can be substituted for wheat flour in many recipes. Rice can also create a sense of fullness that comes with eating a starchy grain.
Amaranth: This is a tiny, ancient grain. It is a complete protein and has more iron than most grains.

Safety on the Playground Playgrounds are perfect places to exercise your child’s mind and body. Many parents forget that there are a few precautions that can help keep their children safe on the playground. The most common injury is a fall, accounting for more than 40% of playground accidents. Many of these injuries occur on monkey bars, swings, and slides. Children between the ages of 5 and 9 most often need emergency care for playground injuries. Besides the occasional scrape or bruise, more serious injuries frequently include fractures, concussions, and sprains. Burns are another potential playground risk. Even though many slides and other equipment are no longer made of metal, plastic and rubber surfaces can still become too hot for a child’s skin. Home playgrounds may be just as hazardous. We tend to let our guard down at home, perhaps multitasking while children play in the backyard, but homeowners may not always follow proper playground construction, including installing soft landing surfaces. There are so many wonderful parks and playgrounds on Staten Island. From the Carousel at Willowbrook Park to Aesop Park in Tottenville. Before heading out for some playtime in this great July weather, parents should consider the following tips: • Always inspect a playground before allowing your child to play. Look for any sharp edges, tripping hazards, or loose hand grips. • Choose a playground with a soft landing surface surrounding it. Good ground cover choices include mulch or wood chips.
• Check the temperature of all equipment. Touch it to make sure it isn’t too hot for your child’s skin. • Dress your child appropriately. Shoes are a must. To avoid snags, don’t let your child wear jewelry or clothing with drawstrings or hoods. • Teach your child good ‘playground manners.’ For instance, always slide down feet first. Never share the slide with another child, and always use the handrails. • Watch your child at all times. Sometimes we can get distracted, but it’s important to be sure we stay focused on their safety on the playground. Since July is filled with hot, humid days, be sure to limit their time outside when the sun’s rays are strongest: between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and apply sunblock often. Know the signs of heatstroke, which is an emergency. Should you notice paleness, headache, or nausea, move your child to a shady area or an air-conditioned room or car. Provide plenty of cool water. Warning signs include high body temperature, red skin with no sweating, rapid pulse, and confusion. If your child has any of these signs, call for immediate medical help.

Many water parks shut down rides when there is thunder and lightning, and the park may close early if the weather is particularly bad. Double-check the weather report before making the trip so that your time and money is well spent. • Visit when the park is unlikely to be busy. Many parks are busy during the summer, especially on the weekends when parents are not at work. So families who visit during the week might enjoy a less crowded park, which means shorter lines to get on the rides. Helpful tip: Call ahead to inquire if any camps or large groups are scheduled to visit the park on a day you want to visit. • Research coupons and discount codes. Search the Internet to find out if the water park is offering any discounts. Family admission can be expensive, but coupons or other discounts can cut those costs. Find out if the park sells season passes, which will end up saving you money if you plan to visit the park regularlary. Certain amusement parks pair up with retailers and sponsors to offer discounts, so you may be eligible for discount tickets by dining out at a particular restaurant or collecting a coupon code from a cereal box. • Measure the kids before you embark. Rides may have height restrictions. It is beneficial to understand these height limits so that you will know if your kids will be able to enjoy most of the attractions. In many parks, 42 to 48 inches is the magic number. Some parks may allow shorter, younger children to ride when accompanied by an adult. If your kids are too small, it may be better to wait until next season when they can enjoy more of the fun. • Get there early or very late. The parking lot at the water park may be as large as the park itself. Get to the park early to avoid parking miles away from the entrance. Know when the park opens and be the first one in line, which affords you the luxury of the best parking spot and first choice for rides. If you're not an early bird, visit the park just before closing. Crowds may have thinned out by then and the weather may be cooler. • Wear brightly colored bathing suits. Many water parks have strict guidelines as to which type of clothing can be worn. Bathing suits are usually a must, as they won't get caught or tangled like shirts and shorts might. Choose brightly colored or patterned swimsuits so kids will stand out in the crowds. This will make it easier to keep them in your sight. Similarly, wear something that makes it easy for your children to find you should they get lost. • Invest in a waterproof money holder necklace. Chances are you will store many of your belongings in a locker so that you will not have to carry around too many items. But it is helpful to have a few dollars on hand for those times when lemonade or ice cream sundaes beckon, so purchase a waterproof necklace to secure and hold your money. • Bring along a change of clothing. Sitting around in a damp bathing suit, especially on the long car ride home, can be uncomfortable. Pack a change of clothes and shoes, so everyone will be dry, warm and comfortable. • Continue to apply waterproof sunscreen. Water reflects the sun's UV rays, making water park revelers highly prone to sunburn. Be sure to wear waterproof sunscreen and apply it continuously throughout the day to protect against painful skin damage. • Explain the safety rules. Water parks are frequently crowded, and children who wander off can easily become lost. As a family, go over safety precautions, including what to do in the event someone gets lost. Children can go to a park employee or a security guard and ask for help. Or suggest to your children that they go into any of the shops and tell the counter staff that they're lost. Establish a meeting spot to enable everyone to gather together in the event of an emergency. • Plan break times. The water park may be overwhelming, especially for tired or hungry children so take breaks for snacks, lunch and even a few moments to just settle down and catch your breath. Water parks are a summertime staple. With a few tips, visiting a water park with the family can be a safe and memorable outing.

Summer Arts Activities for Your Children
Solid Advice on Improving Children’s Basic Skills and Addressing Parental Concerns
Parents: It is a simple fact that funding for the arts in schools is dropping – reducing the time spent on them. Having fewer opportunities to explore the arts is a shame because the arts play an important role in children’s math, reading, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. And there is the inescapable fact that the arts can bring joy to children as well as make learning fun to children, resulting in the creation of a satisfying interest in them throughout their lives. Our summer learning activities are designed to take up the slack from the disappearing arts programs in the schools. Begin with Dance Dance is a great way to gain better balance and coordination. It also is a different way to exercise that is a lot of fun as well as a way to express your creativity. Here are some ideas for a fun-filled week of family dancing. 1. Dance to a dance exercise video. 2. Put on some music and have everyone dance as if they were different kinds of animals (chicken, elephant, cat and so on). 3. Put on different kinds of music and just respond to the beat. 4. Watch shows with dancing, from ballet to "Dancing With the Stars."

Explore the Theater Your first arts activity involved dancing. Keep on dancing as you explore the arts of drama and the theater: 1. Search the newspaper or online for local productions by theater groups and colleges to give your children a taste of what the theater is like. Then try to attend one of these productions or see a rehearsal. 2. If there is a children's theater group in your community, your children may be able to take part in a program that will let them learn more about acting or the behind-the-scenes activities involved in putting on a play. 3. Visit Zoom Playhouse at pbskids.org/zoom/activities/playhouse to find plays for the family to perform. You don't need to memorize a role; just read it over silently several times so everyone can read their role easily. These plays are really CUTE! 4. Watch a play on television with your children. Introduce Your Children to Sculpture To most children, art centers are painting and drawing. This week expand their artistic creativity to sculpture by giving them the opportunity to create actual objects. Your children can use a variety of materials to create sculptures, such as Play-Doh, sand, wood, Styrofoam, rocks, soap, paper, Legos™, Tinkertoys™ and ornaments. They can carve the materials, glue them together or shape them with their hands. We'll give you several ideas of projects; however, you can find many more by searching online for "sculpture activities for kids."
1. Play-Doh is a great beginning material for young sculptors. Unfortunately, if it is allowed to harden, it is likely to crack. To avoid this, look for oven curable clay in your local craft stores to make lasting creations. 2. Sand is also a great sculpting material. Wonderful castles can be created in sandboxes and at the beach. To preserve them for a few weeks, spray them with hair spray or use a mixture of 10 parts sand, 1 part glue and 3 parts water. 3. Your children also can make edible sculptures by using a combination of pretzel sticks and mini and large marshmallows. They can form them on a graham cracker base and glue them together with frosting. Paint like the Masters Painting teaches children how to communicate visually and enhances the fine motor skills of young children and the creativity of older children. This week, increase your children’s knowledge of famous artists by having them paint in the artists' styles. 1. Begin by looking online or in art books at the paintings of several artists. Some interesting choices are: Georges Seurat, whose paintings are made of dots that somehow blend together. There is also Piet Mondrian, who later in his career only used vertical and horizontal straight lines and the colors red, blue, yellow and black. They also can view the work of Jackson Pollock and then fling paint from sticks or large brushes onto canvasses to imitate his style. 2. Take your older children to an art museum with a sketching pad. Then encourage them to copy several paintings that they find appealing.

Bring Music into Your Lives Early musical training contributes to the development of the left side of the brain, which is involved in language processing. And music helps children learn to think creatively. Start your children listening to and making music as early as you can. 1. It's Fourth of July time. Play John Philip Sousa patriotic tunes and march around the house. 2. Have a family picnic in a park and enjoy a free band concert. 3. Visit www.schoolhouserock.tv with your school-age children. They can have fun learning grammar, multiplication and science to such lively tunes as "Multiplication Rock" and "Conjunction Junction." 4. Make musical instruments, from drums to tambourines, for your young children to play. Look online for "homemade musical instruments" for more ideas. 5. Start your children on music lessons. Learn More about Photography 1. Teach your young children the basics of taking pictures. Older children should read the camera manual and play with all of the options to take better pictures. 2. Show your children what great photography looks like by visiting an exhibition of photographs or looking at the works of great photographers in books and online.

DREAMS
>>>
14 COMMON DREAMS AND SYMBOLS
or 90 minutes to two hours each night, every single person on Earth dreams. Sometimes, the dreams are straightforward in their meaning to the dreamer: a long-lost friend reappears, a tropical beach beckons, or the lottery jackpot is within reach.
F
But dreams don’t always tell a simple story, and the field of dream research becomes even more fascinating when people from different cultures and backgrounds report having similar dreams. “Dreams are a universal language, creating often elaborate images out of emotional concepts,” explains Jean-Marc Emden, cofounder and CEO of DreamsCloud, a comprehensive resource on dreams and dreaming on the web, mobile and social media. SYMBOLS AND IMAGES IN DREAMS USUALLY HAVE A GENERALLY ACCEPTED MEANING. Professional dream worker Susan Baragia has identified 14 of 4. PEOPLE – Seeing other people in your dream often is a reflection the most common images found in dreams. “There’s no single, of the different aspects of the self. The people in dreams can relate to definitive meaning for symbols and images in dreams,” Baragia notes. characteristics that need to be developed. Specific people directly “But just as a smile usually means someone’s happy, these images are relate to existing relationships or interpersonal issues we need to work so common, they do have a generally accepted meaning.” through. Dreaming of a lover, in particular, is frequently symbolic of an aspect of ourselves from which we feel detached. 1. BEING CHASED – This is one of the most commonly reported dreams. Mostly because the anxiety we feel in the dream is so vivid, that it makes it easier for us to remember them. Often, the reason for these dreams comes not from the fear of actually being chased, but rather what we’re running from. Chase dreams help us understand that we may not be addressing something in our waking lives that requires our attention. 2. WATER – Water frequently represents our emotions or our unconscious minds. The quality of the water (clear vs. cloudy, calm vs. turbulent) often provides insight into how effectively we are managing our emotions. 3. VEHICLES – Whether a car, airplane, train, or ship, the vehicles in our dream can reflect what direction we feel our life is taking, and how much control we think we have over the path ahead of us. Vehicles can give us the power to make a transition and envision ourselves getting to our destination – or highlight the obstacles we think we are facing and need to work through.

5. SCHOOL OR CLASSROOM – It’s a very common situation for people in dreams to find themselves in a school or classroom, often confronted with a test that they aren’t prepared to take. This is a great example of a “dream pun” – the mind using a word or concept and giving it a different definition. The “lesson” or “test” we face inside the school or classroom is frequently one we need to learn from our past – which is one reason these dreams are often reported by people who have long since finished school. 6. PARALYSIS – Unknown to most people, the body is actually encountering a form of paralysis during dreaming, which prevents it from physically performing the actions of their dreams, therefore dreaming about paralysis frequently represents the overlap between the REM stage and waking stage of sleep. Dreaming about paralysis can also indicate that the dreamer feels he or she lacks control in their waking life.

7. DEATH – Although death is often perceived as negative, it’s often more directly related to dramatic change happening for the dreamer – the end of one thing, in order to make room for something new. 8. FLYING – Flying in a dream, and how effectively or poorly it’s done, relates to how much control we feel we have in our lives, and whether we are confident and able to achieve our goals. High flying is one of the most euphoric dreams imaginable, while flying or “skimming” low to the ground or being caught in obstacles like power lines can be immensely frustrating. 9. FALLING – Not all falling dreams are scary and negative. Some dreamers report a type of slow falling that indicates serenity and the act of letting go. Often, falling uncontrollably from a great height indicates something in waking our life that feels very much out of control. 10. NUDITY – Emotional or psychological exposure or vulnerability is very often expressed in dreams through nudity. The body part that’s exposed can give more insight into the emotion that our dreams are helping us to understand. 11. BABY – Dreaming of a baby often represents something new: It might be a new idea, new development or the potential for growth in a specific area of our waking life. 12. FOOD – Food symbolizes energy, knowledge or nourishment and is directly related to our intellect, emotions and spirituality. Food can also be a manifestation of idioms like, “food for thought,” and reveal that we may be ‘hungry’ for new information and insights. 13. HOUSE – Houses frequently represent the dreamer’s mind. Different levels or rooms may relate to difference aspects of the individual dreamer and different degrees of consciousness. The basement often represents what has been neglected, or what the dreamer is not aware of in his or her waking life, while bedrooms relate to intimate thoughts and feelings – those closest to the dreamer’s core self. 14. SEX – Sex in dreams can simply be an outlet for sexual expression. But dreams about sex can also symbolize intimate connections with one’s self and others, and the figurative integration of new information.

THE BUS RIDE
Ryan and Erica were so excited. They were going with their cousin Jennifer, who is 17, to see the movie, The Lion King. Since Jennifer does not drive yet, they were taking a bus to the movie. Ryan had never been on a bus before and he kept asking Jennifer, “What is it like to be on a bus?” “Oh, it’s fun,” replied Jennifer. “You can sit
by the window when we get on the bus.” Erica chimed in, “I want to sit by the window, too!” Jennifer said, “No problem, you could both sit by a window.” “We can?” they both shouted. As they walked to the bus stop, Ryan, who was 4 years old, asked, “Where are we going?” “Ryan, you are silly,” said Erica. “We are going to the bus stop to get the bus.” (Erica is almost 7 years old and had been on a bus several times.) When they got to the bus stop, Jennifer showed Ryan the bus stop sign. “This is how you know where to wait for the bus.” “Look, look, here’s a bus,” shouted Erica. The bus pulled into the stop. Erica got on first and put her five quarters in the fare box. “I want to put some money in the box, too!” cried Ryan. “Here,” said Jennifer, giving Ryan her fare. “Since you are not 6 years old, you ride for free on the bus.” The lady bus driver smiled at Ryan and Erica. After riding for a few minutes, the bus came to a stop. “Why are we stopping?” Ryan asked. “We are stopping to let more people on the bus,” the bus driver replied. Erica and Ryan enjoyed looking out the windows. “Hey,” exclaimed Ryan talking to Erica, “I see a bunch of people sitting in their cars.” “Okay, guys, it is time for us to get off the bus,” said Jennifer. “Let’s ring the bell so the bus driver knows we want to get off.” “I don’t see any bell,” said Ryan. “Here it is,” said Erica showing Ryan the long black strip you press when you want the bus driver to stop. Ryan pressed the strip and sure enough the bell sounded and a light went on in front of the bus driver. As they got off the bus, the bus driver said, “Have a good day.”

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but pictures plus words can be priceless. As every good teacher knows, a well-chosen video can fasten a concept into a child’s head much faster than a lecture or a textbook.
WHERE TO FIND THE BEST FREE EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS ONLINE
Happily this is the golden age for mini videos. Charismatic educators have condensed their best lessons into short segments that are as entertaining as they are educational. Videos are especially good at grabbing the attention of distractible middle school students. Since pre-teens are already snacking on videos of cute animals and favorite music groups, parents might as well expand the menu to include something a little more nourishing. Bite-size videos have several uses. During the summer, they offer young minds a workout that may minimize summer slump. During the school year, they can be used to supplement or enliven lessons from school. Parents who are flummoxed by homework assignments may turn to mini videos to refresh their memories of things they learned long ago and, of course, homeschooling families can add videos to their other teaching tools. Most of all videos like those on the sites listed below are fun, so they reinforce the idea that learning something new every day is a terrific way to make use of a brain. Not surprisingly, many educational videos are now posted on YouTube. For parents, this creates a wheat–from-chaff problem because the good stuff is mixed in with plenty of other videos that are at best time-wasters and at worst inappropriate for kids. The following YouTube channels meet the ABC standard– they are Accurate, Boredom Busting and Child Friendly. If you find a channel your kids really like, consider subscribing so you’ll know when new videos are posted. CGP GREY has a simple tagline—“complex things explained”—and it delivers on that promise. These short videos feature stick figures that explain everything from the debt limit and daylight savings time to the Electoral College and net neutrality. Vihart is one of the few vlogs hosted by a woman. Victoria calls herself a “recreational mathemusician,” and her videos are quirky, fast-paced explorations of the intersections between math and art. Check out the hexaflexagrams! Crash Course is the collaboration of two brothers who are also teachers. (One of the brothers happens to be John Green, author of several wildly popular young adult books including The Fault in our Stars.) Videos on this site are a bit longer than others, but the brothers talk fast. (Occasionally they use edgy language.) At this point, they’ve posted videos for entire semesters of material in US and World history, literature, chemistry, biology, ecology and psychology. Science Music Videos are the creation of Mr. W, a science teacher in Berkeley, California, who makes up infectious folk, rock, and even rap songs about complicated biological concepts like DNA, photosynthesis, mitosis and osmosis.
Veritasium is a grab bag filled with experiments, discussions, interviews, demos and random interesting facts. The host, Derek Muller, has a special interest in correcting scientific misconceptions. Minute physics prides itself on making very short videos that explain “cool physics and other sweet science” using “stick figures and bad puns.” Not surprisingly, the narrator talks very fast so kids who are completely new to a topic may need to watch the videos more than once. Numberphile is produced by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute with the goal of getting young people to “love numbers.” The videos, created by a talented team of mathematicians, explain a wide variety of mathematical concepts in idiosyncratic ways. To calculate the value of pi, they use pies! Spangler Effect is the product of a science teacher who turns “ordinary science experiments into unforgettable learning experiences.” If your kids want to replicate some of the experiments, books and science kits are sold on a complementary website. TED-Ed is part of the growing empire of TED products. Unlike the wellknown talks, TED-Ed segments are shorter lessons from exceptional teachers. Many have been developed in consultation with animators and screenwriters. They vary widely in length and subject matter but all are intended to spread great ideas and spark curiosity. Videos on YouTube tend to be short and idiosyncratic. Like a good appetizer, they can create hunger but they may not satisfy it. If you are looking for videos that are a little more substantial and systematic, turn to these websites. Khanacademy.org is a non-profit that posts free video lessons on a wide range of subjects from art history to economics. Started by a young man who was trying to help his cousin do her math long distance, the site is especially good at helping young learners master mathematical concepts from counting to differential equations. Neok12.com has a well-organized list of videos on almost any topic a child might want to explore. In addition to the video lessons, the site offers games and worksheets that may be helpful to students who are trying to master unfamiliar concepts for school. Watchknowlearn.org has indexed 50,000 educational videos on everything from physics to phys ed, foreign languages to social studies, ethics to ecology. In addition to searching by subject matter, parents can zero in on videos suitable for specific ages by using the slider at the top of the page. Watching a video isn’t the same as mastering a subject. Kids also need discussions and exercises as well as lots of opportunities to practice new skills. Still, the right video at the right time can ignite a child’s curiosity and perhaps a lifelong interest. Just as important, sharing one of these little videos can be a big opportunity for families to talk, learn and laugh together.

S.I. LIVING
Facebook Chatter
JOIN US & OVER 7,000 OF OUR CLOSEST FRIENDS TO DISCUSS TODAY'S ISSUES. IT'S FUN! S.I. Parent: Do your children have chores to do around the house? Do they get an allowance for completing their chores? Janine Mattia Mulé: My son is 12. He has chores and gets an allowance for completing them. Just like I get a paycheck. When he wants something he saves for it. It makes them understand working for something and the reality of life. Janine Quitsch: My son makes his bed every morning, throws out the recycling once a week and helps with his baby brother. We don't give him an allowance because kids these days already get enough on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.
Last month on Facebook we chatted about summer break and more. Aside from all the input you'll get from fellow Staten Islanders, it's where we post updates on what's going on, as well as some funny cartoons – because we all need a laugh from time to time. Join us. We'd like to hear what YOU think!
Stephanie Chervoni: My younger ones help with what I ask but their allowance is the roof over their heads and the food on the table. Made the mistake of allowance with older ones and anytime I asked them to do something, they tried to put a dollar amount on it. Diana Marie Kowalski-Diaz: My boys are 10 & 15. They do chores on a weekly basis. Vacuum. Mopping. Bathroom. Garbage. Dishes. No allowance. They get video games on the weekend to play. That's their reward.
Ash MrsTheman: Don't have child yet but I have already planned chores as part of their life. Looking to teach them money is earned and not just given. Found a great chore chart on Pinterest that equates $ values per chore. If she wants a new toy or so, she can add up chores to earn it. Judy Jordan: My kids do have chores: clean bathroom, wash dishes, vacuum, clean their rooms, put garbage out. I'm teaching them responsibilities, no allowance. Gennarina Pirrone: No allowance. My son cleans up his toys and helps with the dishes.
LIKE US ON FACEBOOK.COM/SIPARENT TO SEE MORE ON THESE AND OTHER TOPICS.
Lisa Lee: I teach my three year old to help with no reward. She’s my little helper with my infant and cleaning around house...she insists.
S.I. Parent: Do you read with your children everyday? What is your child’s favorite book to read? Donna M. Zucconi: Oh, so many! On the Night You Were Born, Brown Bear Brown Bear, My Wish Come True are some of our favorites. Dorothy Taylor- Graffigna: Are You My Mother?
Nicole Damon Esposito: My 15 month old is obsessed with Goodnight Moon. I have to read it at least 3 times before bed.

Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.
Like Mother, Like Daughter My mom has become one of those obstacle race addicts. You know, one of those people who actually likes running, climbing walls, and getting dirty in the mud. She’s done a few High Rock Challenges, a Mudderella race, MuckFest, and a few others here and there. She actually tries to schedule one race a month in the spring and summer, so we have to always listen to her talk about her training, her race “war wounds,” and how much fun it is to torture herself. You know… all that “blah, blah, blah” stuff. Needless to say, I hesitated a minute when she asked me to join her for a race at Wolfe’s Pond Park. But when she told me it was part physical and part mental – and that she would need me for those puzzle parts – I took it as a compliment, and accepted the challenge. I embarked on the Krell Adventure Race not exactly knowing what to expect; neither did Mom (she had never done that race before), but we knew we were going to have fun. We signed up for the family division using a name I came up with: “Team Mik-Shrok.” That was the title of a book I’d recently read in school about two young missionaries helping some Eskimos. Even though Mommy kept joking that Mik-Shrok meant “Strong Eskimo,” it actually means “unexpected strength,” something she said perfectly defined me. Because this was the type of race where you receive a map and then have to make your course, the 5K ended up being 6.3 miles that we traversed in order to complete 13 of 14 obstacles (we ran out of time for the last one, oh well!). It was 3+ hours of fun hard work. Mom said I was amazing! I successfully completed each obstacle like a race pro… even the tree maze where Mom and I had to climb through a stack of tree branches tethered to one another – we kept getting caught in the ropes. I tore up my leg there. In fact, they’re still healing, but it’s totally OK because my dad says that bruises and scars are stories.

I also wowed mom by accomplishing the Frisbee challenge – she just couldn’t land the disc into the bucket–and by encouraging her to not give up when the puzzle challenge stumped us for about 30 minutes. I told her that
Party Like an Animal At...
moving on without that point was not an option; we figured it out about 10 minutes afterward. After that, we moved onto the wheelbarrow challenge, where Mom had to push me through a course that I guided her on, since she had to be blindfolded. We laughed the entire time because she kept getting confused between her right and her left (I mean, really?!), but she didn’t drop me once, so I give her credit for that. I also really enjoyed the mucky sewer tunnel challenge that lead us across Hylan Boulevard – underground, that is. It was gross and smelly, and I had to keep talking to claustrophobic Mom the whole time, but it was such a different experience that it’s really a great memory for me. I even went halfway back into the tunnel alone when we realized we had forgotten to use the midway-point hole puncher to punch our challenge card.

In all, we completed 13 obstacles, including kayaking; a water bucket challenge that had me basically soaking my mom repeatedly; a memory trail hike; a rope-assisted small mountain climb; and a conservation challenge where we had to fill up a garbage bag of trash in order to help clean up the area; etc. It was a bonding experience like no other, and though I was exhausted afterward, the end-ofrace pizza party and the red velvet shake my mom treated me to from Standard Burger perked me right up.

I would definitely do this again with Mom, something that makes her so happy. When it comes to adventure, she says it’s awesome that I got hooked early on. All the more fun things for me to experience as I grow up, she says. The fact that we can do these together is something we’ll both always cherish… mud and all!

SPEECH PATHOLOGY
FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
