Toys Needed for RUMC’s Tiny Patients The youngest patients at Richmond University Medical Center desperately need your help. The hospital’s pediatric unit is in need of toys for their playroom, which is used by the children as a safe space from doctor’s exams and medically invasive procedures and tests, as well as place to occupy their time when their families are not present. The hospital relies heavily on community donations throughout the year to fill the playroom with developmentally appropriate toys for the children as well as toys that are used as bravery rewards. Young oncology patients are rewarded for completed rounds of chemo and for cooperation during tests and procedures. All of the children on the unit are rewarded with bravery prizes after having IV’s inserted. The toy drive was off to a great start last month after hospital staff reached out to the community, immediately receiving donations from various individuals and organizations. ECHO, or Emergency Children’s Help Organization, generously donated $1000. ECHO is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to children and their families during a time of need. Unfortunately, with 10-18 patients per day, the hospital is still running low on donations and will continue to need help maintaining their playroom and providing brave children with rewards. If you would like to donate a toy or place a monetary donation to help brighten the day of a sick child, please contact Isabella Lombardo at 718-818-2977. Want to help the tiniest patients of all? RUMC is also hosting its 4th Annual Clambake Fundraiser to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in honor of the late Dr. Anantham Harinon on Wednesday June 28 at the Vanderbilt in South Beach (300 Father Capodanno Blvd.). everything you need to know about your community “YEA” Gabrielle! Congratulations to Staten Island Tech student Gabrielle Garcia, who recently won the national YEA! 2017 Saunders Scholar Competition and was named America’s Next Top Young Entrepreneur. Gabrielle won the local Staten Island competition in April and then traveled to Rochester, NY in May to compete against 92 students representing 76 businesses from YEA! programs across 35 states around the country. Gabrielle was awarded a $30,000 Rochester Institute of Technology scholarship, mentoring by E. Philip Saunders himself, and an all-expense paid trip to attend America’s Small Business Summit hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC in September. She was also named the National People’s Choice Champion in a text-to-vote poll. Her winning product, called Stench Snipers, is an insert for deodorizing hockey gloves. The Staten Island Chamber of Commerce Foundation Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) program began in October 2013, the first and only such program in New York City. It is offered as an afterschool, non-credit course meeting once a week for three hours each week. All Staten Island high school students are eligible to apply. “It’s such an honor to see our own Gabbie Garcia take home the National win. Gabbie was passionate about her idea from the first day I met her and has worked very hard to bring her product to market,” said Linda Baran, President & CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. “I believe she has the tenacity to succeed in business. Kudos to Gabbie! We at the Chamber are proud to take part in bringing out her entrepreneurial spirit through the YEA! Program.”

Carnival & Science Fun The Staten Island Children’s Museum is hosting its annual fundraiser, The Carnival & Science Spectacular, an old-fashioned day of family fun on the Meadow. The museum aims to get kids and families excited about science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) by learning the mechanics behind carnival rides and games, the science of cooking, and the mathematics present all around us, every day. “Every year the Carnival & Science Spectacular amazes children and families by demonstrating that science is around us every day. It is exciting to see the wonder in the eyes of kids as they interact with robots, use lasers to cut through metal, or marvel at amazing insects,” says Kerri Bringslid, Carnival co-chair. The event will take place Saturday, June 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. (rain date Sunday, June 4). Tickets are $15 at the gate and $13 in advance at the museum or online at sichildrensmuseum.org. Funds raised for the Carnival & Science Spectacular support Museum school, camp, and public programs.

State-Funded Help for Local Addicts Staten Island is officially home to a much-needed 24/7 addiction treatment center. Governor Cuomo recently announced the grand opening of Next Step Resource and Recovery Center, the first of its kind in our borough. The state-funded drug recovery center is operated by Community Health Action of Staten Island and provides access to services and information for people in recovery from substance abuse and their families 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is located at 26 Bay Street in St. George. “The opening of this community-based recovery center comes at a crucial time for Staten Island,” said District Attorney Michael McMahon. “Almost every day, another family must bear the tragedy of losing a loved one to the disease of addiction. It is imperative that we provide constant, aroundthe-clock care to those suffering from substance abuse illness in order to overcome this epidemic and save lives.” New Yorkers struggling with an addiction, or those with loved ones struggling, can find help and hope by calling the state’s toll-free, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY or by texting HOPENY.

everything you need to know about your community Readers Are Leaders Last month, Borough President Oddo honored students from schools around Staten Island who participated in the 21st annual “Readers Are Leaders” 4th Grade Reading Challenge. “Readers Are Leaders” challenged 4th grade classes in the Island’s public, parochial and private schools to read a minimum of six books at grade level or above during the five-week period of February 12 to March 18. Students then submitted a report on their favorite book that they read during the period. Each school picked one “Exceptional Reader” to be honored at the ceremony. Since the program began in 1996, 4th graders have read more than 630,000 books for the annual challenge. Photo credit: Staten Island USA
Fourth of July Travis Parade
Happy Campers
Independence Day is just weeks away! The annual Fourth of July Travis Parade is celebrating its 107th anniversary this July. The celebration is one of the oldest, continuously-held Independence Day parades in the country. This year’s Grand Marshal will be NYS Assemblyman Michael Cusick. The rain-or-shine ceremony kicks off noon at the reviewing stand at P.S. 26 at 4108 Victory Blvd, followed by the parade step-off from Showplace Entertainment Center at 141 East Service Road at 12:30pm. Go to siparent. com to link to more information.
Have you ever spent a night in the great outdoors? The National Wildlife Federation is again hosting its Great American Campout, now in its 12th year of camping fun. The annual event encourages people to connect with the great outdoors, get closer to nature, and get motivated to protect wildlife and wild places. People are asked to make an online pledge to camp anywhere they’d like – including their own backyard— on the Great American Campout Day, June 24. The NWF will provide all the information needed, including a directory of hosted Great American Campout locations, tips on what to bring, lists of campout activities and recipes, and more. Campers are encouraged to take #Campies (Camping Selfies) and submit them to NWF’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages to share their experiences. Link to their website at siparent.com.
Summer Reading Challenge The Scholastic Summer Challenge keeps kids hooked on books over the summer break! To participate in the challenge, kids simply log their reading minutes on the Scholastic website each day to earn virtual rewards. The challenge is already underway, with millions of minutes logged so far. Kids have until September 8 to log their minutes. This year’s theme is “Happy Camper” encouraging adventures in reading this summer. The school that logs the most minutes will receive “Best in State” recognition. Go to to siparent.com/summer-reading-programs for the scoop on local summer reading parties, programs and more!

Single-Stalls in Schools Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina announced an initiative to provide every public school with a single-stall bathroom for students with medical conditions and disabilities, as well as transgender and gender non-conforming students, by June of next year. The DOE’s Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Student Guidelines permit students to use any bathroom that aligns with their gender identity, and the single-stall bathrooms provide an additional safe space for these students.

3K-For All The “3” is not a typo, folks. Mayor de Blasio recently announced the city’s plans to provide a free, full day of school to all three-year-olds in New York City. The program kicks off in the fall for schools in the South Bronx and Brownsville. By the fall of 2020, at least six more districts will be added, with an ultimate goal of universal 3K For All by 2021. Plans for Staten Island schools have not been announced yet, but we will keep you updated as we learn more from the DOE. “The research is clear – investment in early childhood education reaps benefits for students, families and communities for years to come. Using the successful model we developed for Pre-K for All, we are doubling down with free, full-day, high-quality 3-K for All for our three-year-olds. This extra year of education will provide our children with a level of academic and social development that they cannot get later on, while at the same time, alleviating some of the strain New York City’s working families face today,” said Mayor de Blasio.
Cool News for Schools
Stars on Staten Island
School just got a whole lot cooler. Mayor de Blasio recently announced funding to provide every classroom in New York City with air conditioning. The city dedicated $28.75 million to purchase and install air conditioning units in all classrooms by 2022. Twenty-six percent of classrooms are currently without functioning air conditioners. The first round of installations are slated to start this summer.
Have you spotted your favorite movie star in Staten Island? BP Oddo recently teamed up with Broadway Stages (the largest TV and film production company on the East Coast) to announce the filming of a new Netflix series and major motion picture at the former Arthur Kill Correctional Facility. Ocean’s 8, a sequel and all-female spinoff of the Ocean’s trilogy, and the Netflix series Seven Seconds both filmed at the facility back in May. Broadway Stages is currently working on buying out the facility, which has already been used for popular shows like Blindspot, Quantico, Blacklist, The Americans and more. We can’t wait to see more stars!
“Making sure that all classrooms are air conditioned is one more commitment we’re making to ensure that nothing stands in the way of our students and a quality education,” said Mayor de Blasio. “I’ve spoken with countless parents at town halls across the city and this issue has come up repeatedly. We’re investing in classrooms to create a safe, comfortable atmosphere to build on the progress our schools have made over the last few years.”

The State Legislature Must Stop Kicking the Can on Mayoral Control The law covering Mayoral Control of NYC Public Schools is being directly tied to increasing the number of Charter Schools authorized in New York City. That is unfortunate because I believe the two issues are separate and distinct. Some of you may recall that the NYS Legislature and Governor Cuomo extended Mayoral Control of NYC Public Schools for only one year, each of the last two legislative sessions. The discussion is intensifying as I write this piece, with the law scheduled to expire by June 30th. The Governor and state Legislature need to stop kicking the can down the road. They need to demonstrate real leadership by passing a revised Mayoral Control law separate from the Charter School issue. Charter Schools are not accountable to local school districts. In essence, charter schools are independent stand-alone school districts. Although charters are autonomous, they are taxpayer-funded, with the money dispersed by the local public school district. I support school choice, but not to the point that it infringes on accountability and transparency. Charters often hold a position that they are public schools for funding, while claiming autonomy when financial and other accountability measures are raised. I believe the NYS Legislature needs to increase accountability and transparency efforts of all schools including Charters. Regardless of who is Mayor, Mayoral Control does provide accountability and oversight of the NYC Public School system. It holds the Mayor’s Office accountable for the budget and academic movement of our schools via the Chancellor. During the 2009 renewal process of Mayoral Control, we learned there needed to be changes and the state legislature acted by including those changes in the revision to the law. This time around there are additional changes that should be considered. Mayoral Control should not
be permanent, but continue to have a sunset date. An ideal sunset is 3 to 5 years, which will allow a periodic mandatory review of the law. Below are some additional recommendations I believe the state legislature should consider. Recommendations for Mayoral Control:
• 3 to 5 year mandatory legislative review • Adjust composition of the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) • Mayor’s total number of appointments shall be 7 (reduced from 8) • 4 Mayoral appointments must be parents of public school students. • 3 appointments must be NYC residents who have an expertise that will compliment the PEP’s mission • 5 appointments by Borough Presidents (1 each BP, must be a parent of a public school student) • 1 appointment by the NYC Public Advocate (must be a NYC resident) • Each member will serve for 2-year terms and cannot be removed without just cause. (no term limits for reappointment) Selection of Chancellor:
• Must be an educator that does not require an exemption waiver for lack of education credentials • Mayor recommends 3 candidates for review and evaluation by the PEP • PEP ranks the 3 candidates in order of preference to advise the Mayor for selection Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) – School Leadership Teams (SLTs) – Community Education Councils (CECs):
Provide PTA’s, SLT’s, and CEC’s with substantial input on local school and district budget decisions. Increase transparency and accountability by allowing members the opportunity to view the complete school budget whenever necessary, to efficiently and adequately align a school Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP).

are you a hacker? Quick and clever parenting tips for dads Over seventeen years ago, my wife and I welcomed our firstborn, Kai. He entered this world a mere 5 lbs. 15 oz. and had a set of pipes like none other. We were young, excited and naïve. While we had done our preparation of becoming new parents by reading books and taking a class here and there, experience was our best teacher. Three kids later (who are all now entering their teenager years), my wife and I are constantly finding ourselves seeking advice or searching for solutions to our current teenager dilemmas.
18
Raising kids today is a far cry from the early childrearing days we enjoyed. Today we have access to information at our fingertips. Back then the Internet was not like it is today. We’re talking the days of dial up service. Hell, I think flip phones were still all the rage. So when it came to finding a solution to some common baby concerns like incessant crying or temper tantrums, we were outta luck! We had to handle these situations the good ole fashion way – either calling the doctor or heading to the ER. But fortunately, today’s parents can usually find solutions or “hacks” for most of these concerns by simply Google searching them on their iPhones or Androids. Is there an app for hacks? If there isn’t already and somebody doesn’t beat me to the punch, I’m claiming rights to it now. But I digress.
Over the course of my parenting years, I discovered some parenting hacks from friends, the Internet, and some by accident on my own. Here are a few from my latest book Diaper Dude–The Ultimate Dad’s Guide to Surviving the First Two Years that will come in handy at some point in your parenting journey. Hopefully they will inspire you to come up with some hacks of your own. Figuring out why your baby is relentlessly crying is stressful. Try this hack to see if it solves your baby’s issue. When babies get gassy, they get upset. Lay baby on her back and rotate her legs in a bicycle-pedaling motion, from elbow to knee. This helps relieve the gas … but expect a few baby-farts to the face.

Can’t find the bib during feeding? During meals our little dude always turned into a mess because we never remembered to have a bib handy when food was a-flying. Take a self-adhesive hook and attach it to the back of baby’s high chair to hang the bib on. This way, a bib’s always within reach. This hack will definitely earn you points with your spouse. When baby gets clean, so does mom. While mom is feeding the baby, set up a shower or bath for her. That way, when you change the baby, mom can clean up as well. This is where you get to be a rock star! Teething baby? Put a dash of applesauce in the middle of a cloth (not a paper towel), and then roll it up and freeze it. Remove it from the freezer and let baby suck on that tasty treat till the pain goes away.

Changing diapers become a wrestling match? I personally found this hack to be a lifesaver. Carefully lay your leg across your baby’s body above the waist. Use your leg to prevent your squirmy one from turning side to side. Quickly change the dirty diaper and do your best to add some funny distractions while you are at it by singing a silly song or making silly faces. In no time you will find that diaper change over and done with. Can’t find the binky clip? Take a piece of duck tape 6 inches in length. Rip half way 1 inch in on both sides. Fold the long piece over. Take one of the sticky ends through the binky loop, then stick it back to the folded over piece. Take the other end sticky side and loop in between buttons close and there you have it: an instant binky clip! Well, these are just a handful of hacks that I hope will serve you well when the time comes. Happy Parenting! putting the grand in grandpa Cherishing the craziness of life with grandkids
Being a grandparent combines all the sweet, wonderful moments of parenting with the added benefit of a good night’s sleep.
22 Dom's article.indd 2
I’ll admit– I was not super hands-on as a dad. My first child was born back in the late 1970s, a time when not as much was expected from guys in the daddy-duty department yet. The fact that I could change a diaper (if my wife wasn’t going to be back anytime soon) redeemed me as a modern dad. As subsequent kids came along, my job, on days we were taking them out somewhere, was to keep them from getting dirty as my wife dressed them and handed them off to me. The diaper bags, snacks, etc. miraculously appeared near the front door to be loaded into the car. While my wife took the lion’s share (or should I say lioness?) of day-to-day child rearing, I worked hard at my city
job, put in lots of overtime, and eventually earned my retirement at the age of 50. The children are now grown, and my wife has been back to working outside of the house. Peace and quiet at last! Fast-forward a few years, and another generation starts occupying that quiet space in my life. Babies in the form of grandchildren continue being born at that rate of one a year, while their parents have to work, or have to manage busy schedules around pick up/drop off, sick kids, school holidays, etc. Who is home, has a driver’s license, a pulse, and is available? You guessed it! Throw a couple of carseats in the back seat of my car (gratis from my kids, of course) and upgrade my flip phone

feature / grandfathering to an iPhone with GPS and tracking capabilities, and I’m good to go! Now I get excited when Disney releases a new movie and I can tell you which movie theater has a “family” bathroom so I can take a granddaughter without the gut-wrenching fear of hearing “I gotta go!” before we get home. I know the best entrance to use in Snug Harbor, how to get through the maze of buildings, and how to get around the crew on the days they are filming a movie there. I know how to cook up a batch of oatmeal with fresh fruit and hide the probiotics in it. I know which classmates/teammates also have peanut allergies, and I ALWAYS know the whereabouts of the EpiPen. I know how early you have to get to Trader Joe’s so they won’t run out of the organic English cucumbers. I know where “F5” field is on Miller Field, and which is the closest parking lot to use when the soccer game is there. I now know what quinoa and hummus actually are, but I’ll take a burger deluxe with fries anyday! I never miss Santa Claus at dancing school, Opening Day (or practically any other game day) at Little League, or Art Exhibit Day at preschool. Hell, I can even fill in at a Gymboree class and pop those bubbles with the best of them!

getting a grip on the internet of things be smart about your smart devices

Growing up online.indd 2
It’s no secret that things are getting smarter. Devices let parents check in on sleeping babies and keep track of children when they are away from home. Home management systems turn on lights, lock doors, and monitor use of water or electricity. Entertainment apps notice what we like so they can offer similar products. Even little kids have apps and toys that learn their preferences by interacting with them. Taken together, all these smart, app-driven devices are called the Internet of Things (IoT). By 2020, there will be 50 billion of these intelligent devices, according to one report from the Federal Trade Commission (tinyurl.com/IoTpolicy). Proponents promise that this technology will integrate seamlessly into our lives, anticipating our needs and simplifying many chores. Beguiling as that scenario is, it comes with a price. All of these devices are “smart” because they are collecting information about our families—what we like, where we go, what we do, and even what we say. It’s not paranoid to wonder who has access to all that information. The first line of defense is purchasing from reputable companies that make the extra effort to
build security into their products. Before buying anything that claims to be smart, find out whether there is a procedure for updating security if the device is hacked. Second, figure out exactly what information the device collects. Devices and the apps that run them often sweep up information that isn’t essential for their mission. A step counter, for example, needs to keep track of how many steps you took, but not necessarily where you went. Give permission only for information needed to make the device functional. Third, understand what use is made of the information. Many companies collect anonymous information to spot trends that help them improve their products. Some companies use data to determine what you like so they can recommend other things you might want to buy. And some companies share information with government agencies or sell it to other unrelated companies. Depending on the situation, these policies may seem perfectly OK or highly intrusive. You can’t make an informed decision unless you understand the company’s policy. Hacking, of course, is a risk even for products
5/23/17 1:27 PM
purchased from a reliable company that handles information responsibly. Many security experts are concerned that the Internet of Things is highly vulnerable to manipulation. Unlike computers and cellphones, which come with elaborate security systems and update procedures, devices are not required to have protection. As a result, they may give hackers backdoor access to wireless systems and sensitive data on cellphones and computers. Consumers can defend themselves by taking these precautions. Install updates. Hackers are constantly testing systems to see if they are vulnerable. Responsible companies develop fixes as soon as they are aware of problems, but those solutions won’t help if you don’t install updates. Keep track of the smart devices your family uses. Set up software so updates are downloaded automatically if possible. Or designate one day a month as Security Day. Log into the apps and websites that control your smart devices and install any updates. Delete apps controlling devices that aren’t being used. Take passwords seriously. Many experts recommend a unique password for each device. That way, even if one device is compromised, hackers won’t have access to other information. Of course, it’s not easy to keep track of dozens of passwords. A password storage program like Last Pass will generate and keep track of truly random passwords, but they are also vulnerable to hackers. Another alternative is to develop your own system for creating unique but memorable passwords. Start with a ten or twelve word phrase that has meaning for you. It could be a song lyric, a favorite quote, the punchline to a family joke, something cute one of your kids said, or a simple fact about your family, e.g. “Our family likes to hike in Yellowstone Park every summer.” Take the first letter of each word—oflthiypes—and start fooling with them so there are capitals, numbers, and other symbols. Ofl2hiYPe$. Now insert initials for the smart device into the password. Changing those initials creates a very secure password that’s specific for each device or app. Pay special attention to microphones and cameras. Because devices with microphones and cameras can eavesdrop on your family, they require extra supervision. Learn how to disable cameras and mute microphones when they aren’t in use. If you don’t have confidence in the controls, think twice about purchasing the device. Or cover lenses with privacy stickers, available from companies like camjmr.com. Consider a separate Wifi connection. As smart devices proliferate, some experts suggest having two password-protected Wifi connections for your home. One provides access to computers, tablets and cellphones—devices that contain everything from family photos to financial information. The other allows communication among things—toys, toasters, thermostats, and home management systems like Amazon’s Echo or Google’s Home. Some routers make this easy by providing a guest network option, but most families will need a professional to make sure everything is configured properly. Still, linking things into their own separate network creates peace of mind. Even if one device has a security flaw, sensitive information will still be protected. Although smart devices have the potential to make family life more convenient and entertaining, they can also be an expensive distraction. Ultimately, parents have to be the smart ones, evaluating each product to decide whether it’s useful enough—and secure enough—to deserve a place in your home.

ways kids can cash in real money-making ideas for preteens & teens
An important aspect of helping kids develop into responsible adults is teaching them the value and rewards of hard work and earning their own money. Through this they gain self-esteem, come to understand the real value of a dollar, and become more thoughtful in the way they spend money. Here are some ideas you can explore with your preteen or teen for ways they can cash in this summer.
32
The grass is always greener – What better way to soak up the sun, get fit, and make spare cash all at once, than mowing lawns? Create fliers mentioning that you live in the neighborhood and include your phone number and your fees. (Base this on yard size and keep them below the cost of professional services.) Deliver the fliers to the homes in your neighborhood, lodged between doorknobs or tucked under mats. Never place anything in mailboxes. Young entrepreneur – Make the most of neighbors’ garage sales by setting up a refreshment stand in your own front yard. All you need is a small table and a handmade sign. Set out a pitcher of lemonade, disposable cups, and wrapped cookies.
Too old for toys and games? – Clean out those you’ve outgrown and hold a sale. Make a sign to attract neighborhood kids and passersby, and lay out blankets in your front yard, and spread out your goods. Keep your prices reasonable, and don’t forget a bargain box filled with odds and ends. Kiddie care –If you are old enough to stay home alone, you may be ready to care for other children. Spread the word through family, friends, and neighbors. When babysitting, play games and do activities with the kids, and avoid talking on the phone or watching TV. Parents love sitters that keep their children busy. Also, don’t forget to clean up and wash dirty dishes.

A little dirt never hurt – Garage cleaning is a big chore for most people, so your services may be especially welcome. When you get a job, be thorough, and move everything into the driveway or yard before you begin. Remove cobwebs with a broom, sweep ledges and the garage floor, and then hose the garage concrete (with permission) to loosen ground-in dirt. When it’s dry, neatly arrange everything back into the garage.
Window washing – Offering your services for this dreaded task is sure to be a success. If you get the job, make sure your parents know the homeowner and approve of you going inside. Clean the interior of all windows, including doors, and don’t forget to open the windows and clean the ledges and tracks. If you are tall enough to reach exterior windows without a ladder, ask permission to hose them down to loosen dirt before washing and drying them. Life’s a zoo –Pet owners who don’t like to kennel are often in a dilemma at vacation time. Pass out fliers in your neighborhood, and offer to pet sit. Do the sitting in your home or fenced yard, if your parents agree. Otherwise, make regular visits to the pet’s home. Be responsible, and do exactly as the pet owner instructs, for both your safety and the pet’s. Weeds away – Are weeds taking over your neighbors’ flowerbeds? Then offer to get them back into shape. Before you get started, find out which are plants, or flowers that have not yet bloomed. When in doubt, ask before you pull them. Wear gloves to protect your hands, and hose the ground lightly to loosen roots. Pull weeds from rock beds, shrubbery, and cement cracks. Then dispose of them properly. Dollars for duds– Have you hit another growth spurt? Ask your parents if you can consign your clothing and split the profits. Look for consignment shops under “resale,” “clothing – used,” or “consignment.” Find out their policies, and then get your clothing ready. Wash and dewrinkle, then hang or fold it neatly. Don’t forget shoes, jackets, and pajamas, too. Errands for the elderly – Are there handicapped, disabled, or elderly persons in your neighborhood that may need some help? Offer to run errands within walking or biking distance. Attach a basket to your bike or carry a backpack for easy transporting. If you have your driver’s license, offer to do more distant runs. Who’s walking whom? – If you’re looking for a new summer pal, why not make it man’s best friend? Pass out fliers to offer your pet walking services.

feature / summer jobs for kids Make it shine – Round up your friends, and get ready for some cool, wet fun! Hold a car wash in your driveway or a parking lot, with permission from the property owner. Make a large colorful “Car Wash” sign, and include your cost – no more than your local car wash charges. Have your supplies handy: a bucket of soapy water, rags or sponge, a hose, and plenty of dry towels. News courier – Hop on your bike or blades, and spread the news—that is, deliver the news. Apply for a route with your local newspaper, or add your name to the waiting list. Place newspapers either in a newspaper box or on the front porch, and make sure they’ll remain dry. It may even increase your tips. At your service – Offer homecleaning services to your neighbors, and plan to do the following tasks, unless other arrangements are made. Dust furniture and window ledges; vacuum carpet and stairs; sweep and mop tile, linoleum, and wooden floors; scour sinks, bathtubs, and toilets; shake out rugs; vacuum upholstered furniture; and make beds. Find out which cleaning products (supplied by the homeowner) to use on fixtures, appliances, and furniture, to prevent damage. Pool patrol – If sunbathing is your thing, then this is the job for you! Find out the age and certification requirements for lifeguard duty, and then apply at a community pool, YMCA, or nearby beach. While keeping an eye on swimmers, keep your skin safe by using a good sunscreen.

Daycare duty – Do you love little kids? I mean lots of little kids? Then contact local daycare centers and home daycare providers, and find out if they’re in need of a young assistant. Tasks may include assisting with crafts and activities, reading stories, helping with lunch and snacks, and cleaning up.
Follow these tips to keep the loot rolling in and to play it safe. • Get your parents’ permission before accepting a job, and make sure they know where you’ll be. • Dress for the type of job, and wear old clothes if they could be ruined. • Discuss payment in advance to avoid disputes or hard feelings. • Do your best. Not only will you earn respect and feel good about yourself, it will likely affect whether you are hired again and can use that person as a reference. • If you make a mistake, don’t ignore it or try to cover it up. Inform your employer, offer your apologies, and ask what can be done. Your honesty will likely make your employer overlook the error. • Be on time. Call right away, if you’ll be late or can’t make it. By Kimberly Blaker

quick and easy dinner ideas As the school year winds down, your weeknights are probably getting busier. Projects, recitals, playoff games, summer planning – you barely have time to eat, never mind cook a whole meal. We’ve compiled a list of quick and easy dinners with minimal steps and ingredients that you can whip up to satisfy your family any night of the week.
grilled steak with pineapple rice Ingredients
• 1/4 cup lower-sodium soy sauce • 4 4-ounce beef tenderloin fillets • 1 8-ounce can pineapple slices in juice, drained • 6 green onions • 2 8.8-ounce packages precooked brown rice
Directions:
1. Combine soy sauce, pepper, and beef in a large zip-top plastic bag. Massage sauce into beef; let stand at room temperature 7 minutes, turning bag occasionally. 2. While steak marinates, heat a large grill pan over medium-high heat. Coat pan with cooking spray. Arrange pineapple and green onions in pan; cook 5 minutes or until well charred, turning to char evenly. 3. Cut onions and pineapple into bite-sized pieces. 4. Heat rice according to package directions; stir in pineapple, onions, and salt. Keep warm. ~ From CookingLight.com
fajita chicken bake Ingredients
• 3-4 boneless skinless chicken breasts • 1-2 teaspoons taco seasoning • 2 bell peppers in assorted colors, deseeded and thinly sliced • 1 red onion, peeled and thinly sliced • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
Directions:
1. Trim the chicken breasts and lay them in a single layer in a glass baking dish. 2. Sprinkle the taco seasoning over the top of the chicken breast to taste. Lay your thinly sliced onions and peppers on top of the chicken breast, spread out evenly over the top. Drizzle the olive oil over the peppers and onions. Sprinkle cheese over the top of the dish. 3. Bake at 375 F for 35-45 minutes or until chicken is cooked though and the juices run clear.

cover story Date Night 11 Ideas on Staten Island
Every couple needs a night out as often as their schedules – and babysitters – allow. But with the hassle of leaving the kids with a sitter, along with the ever-increasing price to go over the bridge, it’s probably easier to stay close to home. So we’ve compiled eleven different ideas for date night (and on some occasions, daytime dates) that are right here on the Island. There’s something for everyone!

See a live show. See a concert, watch a play, hear one of your favorite stand-up comedians live – those are just a few of the St. George Theatre’s many offerings showcased
Rab’s Country Lanes on Hylan Boulevard or Showplace Entertainment Center off Victory Boulevard. Make it interesting: the winner gets to pick where to grab dinner afterward. Go for a stroll. Staten Island is home to myriad scenic spots where you can enjoy the view before spreading out a picnic. Take in the picturesque beauty of Snug Harbor’s many botanical gardens: The New York Chinese Scholar Garden, The Rose Garden, even The Secret Garden, just to name a few. Be sure to snap a photo together under The Allee, the iconic tunnel arch. Stroll along the FDR Boardwalk to smell the salty sea air amidst the stunning backdrop of the Verrazano Bridge. Buy a bag of food and feed the ducks together at Clove Lakes Park (just make sure you only throw duck food pellets because bread and other human food may grow bacteria that can harm the ducks).
Is your next date night coming up? Just go to

on its historical stage. If you and your sweetie are big fans of live music, you can catch free live concerts on the South Beach boardwalk and in various parks throughout the Island all summer long, as well. For more information on those events, check siparent.com/summer later on this month. Hit the lanes. Up for some friendly competition? Challenge your darling at one of the Island’s two major bowling alleys --
date night.indd 3
Take a class. Learn something new together and who knows, you may end up sharing a lifelong hobby. Casa Belvedere offers cooking classes for adults where you can learn tactics for making delicious Italian food. At Pinot’s Palette on Ellis Street or Paint with a Twist in New Dorp, you’ll create original artwork together (with the added bonus of sipping wine while you work). Ed Perpetua Tennis Academy offers a Friday night walk-in class for adults, beginners welcome. Many local museums offer classes as well. For example, the Alice Austen House offers photography workshops throughout the year. The Noble Maritime Collection at Snug Harbor offers free knitting on Thursdays. The Garibaldi Meucci museum offers Italian language classes. Check individual museum websites for their schedule of upcoming events. Just relax. Pampering yourselves with a relaxing massage after a busy week is a great way to slow down and enjoy time together. Relax on Cloud 9 on Clove Road and A.F. Bennett on New Dorp Lane both offer special packages for couples looking to enjoy some tranquil time. Get a room. Need a little alone time? Sometimes a few hours away is just not enough. Book a room at the beautiful Hilton Garden Inn on South Avenue, where you can have dinner and drinks at Lorenzo’s Restaurant and then head up to the room to enjoy a peaceful night together. Watch a ballgame. There’s no need to travel all the way to the Bronx to see the Yankees play. The Staten Island Yankees minor league team plays at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark on the North Shore from June to September. You can buy tickets
for a specially-themed game or even view a postgame fireworks show on select nights throughout the summer. Catch a movie. Check out the latest blockbusters at one of Staten Island’s two major theaters -- The Atrium on Arthur Kill Road or The United Artists Theatre on Forest Avenue. There’s also the Island’s first dine-in movie theatre coming to Hylan Boulevard, although you’ll unfortunately have to wait until 2019 for it to open. Grab a bite. The Island is jam-packed with eateries boasting stunning views and even better food. Enjoy dinner overlooking the Atlantic at the Marina Cafe or South Fin Grill. Cozy up with lunch in the park at the Stone House at Clove Lakes. Get happy for Happy Hour at the South Shore Bar & Grill (also on the water). Can’t narrow it down to just one restaurant? Try an exciting restaurant crawl hosted by a local merchant’s association. Check out the siparent.com calendar for dates to upcoming crawls. Go museum hopping. There are so many museums and cultural institutions in Staten Island, you could never visit them all in one day (although it might be fun to try!). There’s plenty of material to spark fresh conversation for the most cultured of couples. Immerse yourself in Italian culture at the Garibaldi Meucci Museum; see how Staten Islanders lived during colonial times at Historic Richmond Town; explore the many artifacts and exhibits at the Staten Island Museum. For a complete list of local museums, go to siparent.com/museums.

dren’s progress in school is done by mothers. She is usually the person who helps children with homework, reads to them, takes them to the library and does all kinds of after-school activities with them. Fathers often are not able to spend as much time with their children. It seems to me that children should see fathers participate in school and other activities so that their worlds are not so mother-centered. - Spoke my Mind Answer: Father’s Day is June 18 this year. Yes, it is nice for fathers to receive presents and to spend the day doing things with the family. However, it would certainly be a positive thing for fathers to be able to spend more quality time with their children this summer and throughout the year. We fully realize that because of job responsibilities this time may be limited. Still, we think that Father’s Day is a wonderful time for families to make lists of things that fathers would enjoy doing with their children and have the time to do. To make sure this valuable father/children interaction takes place, dates for specific activities can be placed on
the calendar. Some activities can be with just one child. Others can be with all the children. We are suggesting some activities; however, each family is unique and will make additional or different choices for their lists. 1. The sharing of a hobby, from photography to stamp collecting. 2. Playing games together -- board games and video games. 3. Teaching sports skills. 4. Visiting parks, museums, zoos and other places of interest on weekends. 5. Spending time together at a special event, from a movie to a fair. Studies consistently indicate that fathers decidedly affect their children’s development. Nurturance and closeness with their children lead to positive outcomes with their children.
Benefits of Family Meals Question: Our neighbors almost always have
family dinners every night. It never seems to work out for us, as our kids have so many activities after school. Are we missing out on something important? --Few Family Meals
5/25/17 12:13 PM
Answer: Families need to have time together. It doesn’t have to be dinnertime, even though this is probably the easiest time to be connected with each other. It could be at breakfast or lunch, or any other time the whole family is together. It should be a time when everyone can concentrate on talking to each other -- more than just joining together in an activity. To truly benefit family members, their time together needs to be consistent without any outside distractions like TV, tablets or cellphones. A surprisingly large number of benefits occur for both children and adults who eat dinner together. They include: • An opportunity to share valuable information. • Learning family history through storytelling. • Practice in being both listeners and speakers. • Vocabulary expansion for children. • Eating better, as they avoid fast food and consume more fruits and vegetables. • Children have higher self-esteem. • Reducing teens’ chances of substance abuse or eating disorders. • Parents and children being happier and more stress-free. • Improving teens’ grades. • Giving families a feeling of closeness despite their busy lives. Admittedly, eating dinner together is not the only way for families to accrue the above benefits; they also can come from quality parenting. You can read more about having family dinners -- their benefits and practices -- online at www.shared-meals.com or at thefamilydinnerproject.org/resources/faq. A good book to read is Carol Archambeault’s “The Shared-Meal Revolution: How to Reclaim Balance and Connection in a Fragmented World through Sharing Meals with Family and Friends.”

tips for teens at concerts My Daughter Is Going To A Concert Without Me. Here Are My Rules…
Like many families the shock and horror of what happened in Manchester, UK at the Ariana Grande show have dominated conversation in our house. We are music fans and concert-goers and this senseless attack hit us hard. The images of mostly teenage girls running, injured and scared while their parents were frantic, are devastating. So we talk. We talk not only about the news as it comes in, but also about “now what?”
46 Concert.indd 2
june 2017
My daughter, Hannah, and I want a share a bit about what those conversations are like. Eric: My first inclination is that you’re not going to a show without me. Ever. Like never. But that’s really not possible. Or likely. Or fair. Or right. I know that going to shows with your friends, at your age, is the best. I remember those shows. So we have to figure it out.
1. My parents are putting a data plan on my phone so that I don’t have to rely on access to Wifi if I need it to reach them. 2. I’ll keep a fully-charged extra battery (and cord) in my purse. 3. We will have a confirmed meeting place inside the venue where my parents can access without a ticket.
Hannah: I’m going to a show with my friend in a couple of weeks. We only bought two tickets. Let’s figure it out.
4. We will have a secondary meeting place outside the venue in case of emergency.
And so we came up with a plan, an action plan. We’re calling it “14 ways your 14 year-old daughter can go to show with her 14 year-old friend.” If you have things to add to it, we don’t mind if you change the title.
5. We’re going to look at a map of the venue and we will choose and use venue entrances that are not the “main” ones because it will be less crowded and easier to meet up.

6. I will keep a contact card with emergency contact information inside my iPhone case and an ID card with my name and contact information for my parents will be in my pocket or purse in case I lose my phone. At 14, I don’t have a driver’s licence. 7. I will make sure that I have phone numbers in my contacts for all of my family (ie., grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.). 8. My parents will have the phone numbers for my friend that I’m going to the show with and their parents and vice versa. 9. I will always have a 20-dollar bill for emergency ONLY in my purse. (A concert t-shirt is not an emergency, says my Dad. But looking at his t-shirt collection, you would think otherwise). 10. We will hang back in our seats after the show ends and let the crowd thin out a bit. Even 10 minutes will be thousands of people less leaving at the same time. 11. My parents will be having dinner across the street and I’ll know where they are. 5 minutes away. 12. We will stick together. When one of us goes to the bathroom or to get a drink, we both go. Always. No exceptions. 13. We will check in throughout the show – the first time will be when I get to my seat and again when the show is over. 14. I will ask venue staff if I need help or directions.
A PS from Eric (aka Dad):
And because I have the benefit of having more concert-going experience and knowledge than most, there a couple of things that I want to add, as a parent: Many venues for shows that are attended by this age group have designated spaces inside for parents/guardians to hang out. If the venue has this, I’m there. I will only buy her tickets for seats – not general admission or floors. In a chaotic situation, that space could get dangerous and I know that she’s safer in a seat in the stands. Picture it, you know what I mean.

happiness is being a grandparent grandparenting a young athlete is a whole new ballgame I was having a conversation with my brother and we both agreed that there is something more enjoyable than being the parent of a young athlete. And that’s being the grandparent of a young athlete.

Think about it: Watching your grandchildren play sports has all the good stuff that goes with watching your own kids play, but none of the difficulties. You don’t have to worry about juggling your schedule to get the children to practices or games; of figuring out where to fit in the homework time and have dinner. You don’t have to make sure the kids are ready to head for the fields, which often includes searching for a missing soccer sock or shin guards. Most of all, I have found that the knot in my stomach — that seemed to come every time one of my own children came to bat or faced down a speedy striker while playing goalkeeper or went to the foul line — never develops.
Wins and losses don’t matter when you’re watching the grandkids play; you just want them to have a good time. In fact, I find myself enjoying all the kids, on both teams, enjoying themselves and making great plays. I smile, I laugh, I enjoy it all. And if he gives up a goal or strikes out or fumbles away the ball, I don’t cringe. I brush off their mistakes or missteps. Truth be told, my wife and I still technically have one kid playing “youth” sports. Our 21-year-old, Mike, plays college baseball. But he’ll be a senior next year, so I only have one more season agonizing over each plate appearance. When I attend my grandson’s baseball or soccer or basketball games, I find myself just sitting back in my chair and looking forward to whatever happens. I smile when he gets a hit, but also smile when he strikes out. Usually I’m smiling at his reaction, which
5/24/17 1:06 PM
can be comical either way. But I also know that a single failure is not the end of the world. In fact, it’s just another building block toward his development, preparing him for disappointments he will experience in life and gaining the realization that he can bounce back from them. When the games are over, I’m there to pat him on the back, or put my arm around him, or taking him to the snack stand. It really doesn’t get better than that. My brother was telling me about how his grandson adjusts his batting stance so he can see him when he’s batting, and that he has been admonished by him if he doesn’t think my brother is watching attentively enough. “He doesn’t want me to play with his brother while I’m at his game,” he said. When our kids were all playing at the same time, there was one grandpa who I would run into at many of the games. Will Glennerster had a grandson that played against my oldest son, a granddaughter that played against my daughter, another grandson who played against my youngest. He was a regular at the Little League field or the different gyms for basketball. His grandkids played high school sports and then college sports at the College of Staten Island.

I used to really admire him for always being at his grandkids’ games; that he was so dedicated to supporting them. Now I know he was also there for his own personal joy.

a friend for life is a dog right for your family? Wrigley is a Goldendoodle who was born in a puppy mill and sent to a pet store. A family came into the store just before the holidays to ooh and aah at the puppies and fell in love with Wrigley’s golden curls and clumsy walk. He licked the children’s faces and chased after the toys they threw for him. The staff at the pet store told them that Wrigley would be gentle, playful, large enough to intimidate intruders, and non-shedding. This would be the family’s first pet.
70 Dogs.indd 2
june 2017
It wasn’t too long after they brought him home that the novelty of a new puppy wore off. Wrigley had a hard time distinguishing between his toys and the family’s shoes. He grew bigger than they were promised and had a lot of energy. Wrigley was never taught to walk on a leash and instead pulled his family along like a boat pulls a water skier. They also discovered that Wrigley took after the Golden Retriever side of his family and was a dog who did shed. Unfortunately, the family didn’t know what to do with him and without proper discipline he became a hyper, uncontrollable dog who left a trail of dog hair wherever he went. Sadly, in less than a year, Wrigley became one of the 3.9 million dogs who enter an animal shelter each year.
Not every family is equipped for a dog. If your family is considering adding a fur baby to your home, take a minute to ask yourself if you can make this lifelong commitment. 1. Do you have time for a dog? Plan to spend an average of 1 to 2 hours a day with or for your dog, depending on breed. That includes feeding, training, exercise, grooming, and clean up. Dogs are natural people-pleasers and want to be with you when you are home, so plan time for cuddling, too. If you are a family that is away from your pet for long periods of time due to work or other commitments, you need to make arrangements for their care in your absence. 2. Can you afford a dog? According to the University of Pennsylvania School

VOTED #1 CHILDREN’S STORE IN STATEN ISLAND 718-370-3006 • 2305 Richmond Ave (Heartland Center) Store Hours: Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 10-8, Sun 12-5
of Veterinary Medicine, the average lifetime cost of owning a dog is $23,410. Besides the initial purchase (whether to a breeder or rescue), your dog will also need regular veterinary visits, monthly preventatives like heartworm pills and flea and tick prevention and of course, food. You will also need to consider boarding costs when you travel and grooming costs depending on the breed you choose. Like children, you need to plan for the unexpected medical bills and damage repair. 3. Can you tolerate a mess? Dogs are messy. They drip water on the floor when they drink. They bring mud and leaves into the house from outside. Some dogs shed. Some dogs drool. They leave piles in the backyard and sometimes have accidents in the house. If you are not the kind of person who can clean it up and move on, maybe a dog isn’t right for you. 4. Are you willing, as the adult, to take on the responsibility? My kids, just like thousands of others, promised to do EVERYTHING for the dog. However, I am the one to remind the kids to take care of their dogs and many times, I just take care of them myself. The average life span of a dog is 10-13 years. Getting a dog when your child is 10 means that you as the parent will be caring for this dog long after they have left for college. 5. Is everyone all-in? If you or your spouse or even your live-in mother-in-law is not all-in, your dog will not be successful in your house. Dogs always seem to flock to people who don’t like them, probably trying to win them over. Unfortunately, some people are not dog people and will never come around to barking, messes, and the responsibility that goes along with them. The dog will become a constant thorn in their side and will probably need to be rehomed. 6. Can you survive a trial period? Sometimes getting a dog looks good on paper, but real life is another matter. If you think you have the time and money commitment, why not try pet ownership in small doses? You can pet sit for a friend while they are on vacation to see if the novelty wears off before the owners come home. If that goes well, contact your local shelter about fostering. This longer care situation is a great way to see how a dog will fit into your daily routine. You might even find the lifelong friend you were looking for. By Pam Molnar, a freelance writer and mother of three humans and three fur babies. Their dogs came to live with them after the first family returned them to the shelter for growing too big and shedding too much.
