LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Typical Staten Island. Chances are, if you hear that phrase, you are not expecting it to be a compliment. On Mother’s Day, I received a card from a dear girl written out to “My Staten Island Mom” and I thought, “Now that sounds like the title of a reality show I wouldn’t want to watch!” But why not? Why is all the nice, friendly behavior attributed to people who live in other cities (mostly with warmer weather) and to Trader Joe’s workers? Are people from milder climates automatically more polite? I’ve lived on Staten Island for 39 years, so I may be considered a typical Staten Islander. Very often, I walk around my New Dorp neighborhood and over to the library or one of the stores on “the Lane, ” greeting people I pass with a simple “Good Morning” or “Hello.” Throw in someone pushing a stroller or walking a dog and I’m most likely going to add in an “Oh, how cute!” or something comparable. When I’m driving, I frequently let cars waiting at a corner make the turn in front of me. Why not? It only costs a couple of seconds and is not going to affect my ETA by much. Of course, there are times when I fail to yield to a waiting car, but it’s much more satisfying to get the gratifying thank you nod than the repugnant finger wave. Recently, in the supermarket I let another woman take the last package of chicken cutlets even though I already had it in my hand. She needed it for that night and I was planning ahead for tomorrow. Thinking I would have been disappointed if I were her, I insisted she take mine. It was worth it just to see how surprised she was. Maybe I’m just getting older and suffering from adrenal fatigue or a potassium deficiency, but the importance of getting there first or fastest has waned. It’s about the journey not the destination. Slow and steady wins the race. Be the change you want to see in the world. Live and let live. No matter what philosophy or religion you follow, revered mentors basically tell us the same thing. It’s even the foundation of the Golden Rule. Must be something to it, don’t you think? Forget about smelling the roses. Instead, stop and think about the little everyday actions that define how people see you. We’re all living here just trying to do our best for our families. Let’s help each other out or, at least, give each other a break. Let’s turn the assumption about typical Staten Island behavior and make it something desirable. Now that’s a reality show I’d like to see!

Fifty (Black IP) Watch by Dakota The Fifty Watch by Dakota features an oversized solid steel case, cutout black IP steel Bezel, solid steel band, and a black dial. It also includes a calendar function and is 50 ATM water resistant.

I find them very helpful in all the activities posted for kids (especially during breaks - I know exactly where to go with my almost two year old son). They post interesting articles that touch important parts of human life. I can't imagine not having an issue at my house. I truly think S.I. Parent is a fabulous magazine.” –Fela Wolski

Each student participated in Learning Through Art, a pioneering arts education program, during the 2013-14 school year. sleep under the stars In an effort to encourage people to reconnect with nature, the National Wildlife Federation created the Great American Backyard Campout in 2005. This year on Saturday, June 28, people of all ages are asked to unplug and head outside by camping in their backyards, neighborhoods, parks, and campgrounds. Why don’t you participate with your family? You don’t have to spend the whole night outdoors. Grab a blanket, some marshmallows for roasting, and enjoy an evening gazing up at the stars. In conjunction with this event, the Urban Park Rangers with be hosting a night of family camping from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. You and your family can reconnect with nature by sleeping under the stars in Blue Heron Park. There are only 30 spots available for this event and online registration takes place on Wednesday, June 18. Registration does not guarantee you a spot, but enters you into a lottery.

PROTECT YOUR CHILD FROM ABDUCTION Let our family help protect your family!! Call Stella at our office with your e-mail address to receive critical time-sensitive info on local criminal trends, scams, & our quarterly newsletter. You don’t have to be a customer…Just tell her you are a “STATEN ISLAND PARENT!” Teach your child that a kidnapper does not LOOK like a monster. Explain that a criminal can look and act just like a Mommy or Daddy and will be polite and soft spoken. Teach your child that a kidnapper can be an elderly couple, a woman alone, or the nice young man in scrubs saying his Mom has been injured and has sent for him. Make your child understand that an adult who is a stranger should NEVER seek help from a child for anything, and that includes looking for a lost puppy. Tell your child that you will NEVER send a stranger to bring the child to you in an emergency. Explain that the ONLY people you might send in an emergency would be: “Aunt Marie”, “Laura next door”, or “Mary, their babysitter”. Review this short list of trusted adults often so your child will suspect anyone else.

occurs because everyone thinks someone else is watching.

As soon as you arrive at park or beach, designate a meeting place if a child becomes lost. Choose a first aid station, lifeguard chair, or similar spot staffed by park or beach emergency workers, or direct the child to a police officer. Dress your children in the same bright colors. Neon orange, green, or yellow shirts and hats make it easier to keep track of them.

Become a barrier. If a stranger hovers near your child, stand between that person and your child. Make it obvious that you have noticed the person and that you have looked directly at them.

Summer Reading With all the barbecues, pool parties, and playing out in the sun, learning tends to take a backseat during the summer months. It’s known as the “summer slide,” but it can be avoided. One of the best ways to keep your child’s mind fresh during the break is by reading. That’s why Scholastic has started their 8th annual Summer

Staten Island’s own Sean Egan, a senior at Monsignor Farrell was recently named one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2014. Two years ago Egan organized a holiday visit with fellow high school students to a VA hospital in Brooklyn. This inspired him to found the organization “Hearing Our Heroes,” which consists of more than 300 students who assist and thank veterans of the U.S. armed forces by sponsoring events, providing goods and services, and visiting military hospitals. Egan was honored in May during a ceremony held in Washington, D.C.

SUMMER FUN

>>>

SUMMERTIME FUN WITH THE KIDS

ummer is here; school is out and the kids are facing 10 weeks of blissful freedom! Ahhhh, 10 weeks. . . . 10 WEEKS! What are you going to DO with them for 10 whole weeks! First of all, breathe. It’s OK. They are just kids, it’ll be fine. They will play peacefully while you drink an iced tea in the backyard and catch up on some recreational reading. Yeah, right. Seriously, you have to make a wish list. Gather the kids around and get their ideas. Sort what is appropriate for your family. Write down all the approved activities and post the list where everyone can see so that when you complete each one, you can check if off with a grand sense of accomplishment. Here’s a few ideas we came up with. Please share your own with us, and we will update this article online. We can all learn from each other. Reach us through Facebook or email editorial@siparent.com.

S

THERE ARE MANY WAYS CHILDREN CAN HAVE A BLAST THIS SUMMER.

Have a Picnic. There are many wonderful areas to have a picnic with your family. If you are looking for a nice park setting with the added attraction of a playground and a Carousel, try Willowbrook Park, at Eton Place off Richmond Avenue. For a list of other parks on Staten Island, visit siparent.com/staten-island-parks. Take a Ferry Ride. The large orange Ferry, synonymous with Staten Island, is one of the most popular destinations for New York City tourists. If your kids haven’t taken a ride on it, they are in for a treat. The five-mile ride takes about 25 minutes and is free! Outdoor seating enhances the experience with the rush of wind and unobstructed view of Lady Liberty. Great photo op—if you are not too busy taking pictures for tourists! Scavenger Hunt. Make a list of items to be found. Vary the difficulty level, keeping it age-appropriate for the group involved. If you are conducting this in your backyard, you may need to “stage” the area by hiding some of the items to be found. For older kids, they can team up in groups. Each group can carry a smartphone or digital camera and take pictures of the items instead of actually collecting them. Host a Formal Tea Party. This is a big hit, especially with little girls, ages 4-8 years old. Send out invitations in the form of scrolls. Make little cucumber finger sandwiches and scones. Have the guests dress up. (Mom’s old bridesmaid dresses work well if you bustle them up so they aren’t a tripping hazard.) Announce each guest’s arrival in a booming English accent. Paper fans, personalized tea cups bought at

discount houseware store (think Fishes Eddy). You can get some inexpensive straw hats and a bunch of do-dads, like silk flowers and tulle to decorate. If you are using a glue gun to secure the decoration, make sure it is only handled by an adult in a controlled area. Water Works! Playing with water is a sensory, learning activity that is always fun for kids. Stay at home and enjoy a refreshing activity outside, or take the kids to the source. Either way, it’s a fun day. In your own backyard, hold a water balloon toss, turn on the lawn sprinklers, fill a bucket with water and give them a paintbrush to paint the fence or picnic table, or just blow bubbles during an outdoor dance party. Or, take them to the water: Kayaking, Canoeing, Fishing, Swimming, Visit a Beach. Don’t forget the sunscreen! See a list of Staten Island beaches at www.siparent.com/recreation. Hold A Fundraiser. Lemonade stand, bake sale, car wash, yard sale. Whatever you choose, you will be using the opportunity to teach a larger life-lesson. Let the kids help select a charity or cause so they can really be invested in the outcome. Camping Outside in Your Backyard. Kids’ outdoor time is on a downward spiral as screen time reaches an all-time high. Introduce your kids to the wonders of the natural world with a campout (adult supervision, of course) right in your own backyard. This year is the 10th Anniversary of the Great American Backyard Campout with the theme of Connecting Kids and Nature. Put on a Play. A skit, a play, or a production– it’s all a lot of creative fun for kids! If you want to make it a large-scale summer project, you can have the kids write their own script. For a simpler option, you can get a free pre-written script online. Try kidsinco.com, freedrama.net, a2zhomeschooling.com, or just search the Internet. If you want something really simple, line the kids up and have them put on a production of a song from Frozen. They already know all the words! Take Them Along to Volunteer. Check out siparent.com’s Family Fun tab for a list of ideas, then do a little research so you can give the kids some background on what you will see when you get there. It’ll show them the value of approaching every experience prepared. Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, or take a walk on The High Line in Manhattan. Take a ride into Manhattan to visit Patience and Fortitude, the marble lions that have stood outside the NY Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street for over 100 years! Make education fun by visiting MoMath, the museum of mathematics. Yes, that does exist. It’s in Manhattan on 26th Street. Your child can ride a tricycle with square wheels! GOOD SPORTS by Joe LoVerde

Kathy Barrett has witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly in parents during her days as a coach, mother, and grandmother of young athletes. And, as a school psychologist at two Staten Island public schools, she is all too aware of the influence parents’ actions can have on their children.

WHAT YOU SAY SPEAKS VOLUMES

“Most of the parents I see at my grandson’s soccer games at Miller Field are there to genuinely enjoy watching their children,” said Barrett, school psychologist at PS 60 in Bulls Head and PS 45 in West Brighton. “But I have also seen parents who have no business being near their kids’ games.” In her day job, Barrett’s an expert at helping children succeed socially, emotionally and behaviorally. And she’s been around youth sports enough to understand the role parents play in either supporting or hurting their kids in those areas. Until they reach middle school age, youth sports should not focus on competition, Barrett said. “The primary purpose is to have fun, but there is so much more,” she explained. “In young children, sports build confidence, selfesteem, motor skills, leadership, and sportsmanship. They learn to listen and take directions. “It’s a time when they are learning how to play the game, and learning to enjoy playing the game.” A big part of sports, of course, is success and failure, and learning how to handle both. She thinks a practice her son Michael follows in coaching his son’s Richmondtown Soccer Club team helps do just that.

“He coaches a team that seems to lose most of its games,” she admitted with a laugh. “But after every game, he gives decals to every player on the team for something positive. One child might get one for effort, another for trying his best, another for hustle. Parents then sew the decals onto their uniforms. “This is giving every kid recognition; a sense that he has done well. That is so important.” When children reach their teens, it’s natural for winning and losing to gain importance — but just as important not to let it have a negative effect. That’s when the post-game ride home in the car can make or break a young athlete’s day. “It’s natural to discuss the game,” Barrett said. But what if your child has a bad game or her team suffers a particularly crushing defeat?

“You might want to ask, ‘How did you feel about what happened?’ It opens a door to discussion,” said the former youth softball coach. “If a child wants to talk, you’ve given him or her the opportunity; if he or she shuts down, be wise enough to sense that and back off.” Another no-no is to badger your child after a game. “Although most of the parents I see at games are fine, every once in awhile you find one who puts an excessive amount of pressure on their kids,” she said. “If a parent insists to the child afterward that he needs to practice more, or accuses the child of not paying attention during the game, you are knocking down their self-esteem. It’s heart-breaking.” And blaming the officials after a game is a bad example to be avoided at all costs.

“If a parent is blaming the umpire or the referee all the time, the child will often pick that up,” Barrett said, noting that the child will learn to imitate that behavior.

The fact is, she noted, inaccurate calls happen in all sports. “Discuss this with your child,” she said. “Everybody makes mistakes — even the referee. And it’s OK.” Finally, she said, don’t be afraid to reward your child if she has a big game or his team scores an important victory. “Take them out for a ice cream,” she said. “It’s OK to celebrate doing well.”

SUPERFOODS:

Five Things to Put on This Season’s Menu

While there are many healthy foods out there, some of them are, well, super because they’re loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and other nutrients that help prolong life,” says Dr. Carmella Sebastian, a board-certified internist and nationally known wellness educator. “These ‘ingredients’ even fight and prevent chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes— all important to consider even as you focus on your waistline.”

Here are the top five superfoods Dr. Carm recommends adding to your grocery list: DARK CHOCOLATE IS ONE OF THE FIVE SUPER FOODS DR. SEBASTIAN RECOMMENDS TO HELP LOSE WEIGHT AND FIGHT CHRONIC DISEASE.

Blueberries. Heck, you might even want to grow your own! Just plant them in the spring and harvest in late July or August. Packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, blueberries are also high in potassium and vitamin C, making them a top choice of doctors and nutritionists. Not only can they lower your risk of heart disease and cancer, they are also anti-inflammatory. The darker the berry, the more antioxidants it has. Frozen blueberries are just as good as fresh, so add them to yogurt parfaits, cereal, smoothies, and salads. Dr. Carm recommends a ½ cup serving daily.

Quinoa. Say it with us: keen-wah. Quinoa is full of fiber, and as you might already know, a diet high in fiber will help you maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels. As a bonus, because fiber helps you feel full longer, it’s also a great tool in weight management. Since quinoa has more protein than brown rice, start using it as a healthful substitute. Yogurt. Okay, okay, you know the drill: Calcium helps build strong bones and prevents osteoporosis. So put that knowledge to use and start filling your grocery cart with yogurt. Here’s an added bonus: Some studies even show that calcium helps with weight loss! If you’re age 19 to 50, the USDA recommends 1,000 mg of calcium per day. If you’re 51 or older, that level increases to 1,200 mg daily. Top with freshpicked berries and enjoy a refreshing summer treat!

Dark Chocolate. That’s right. Dr. Carm is encouraging you to eat dark chocolate! New research has shown that it is packed with antioxidants and can lower blood pressure. Look for chocolate with 60 percent or higher cocoa content—the darker, the better. In addition, the darker the chocolate is, the lower the fat and sugar content. Now that’s our kind of health food! Tea. Black tea and green tea have the same overall antioxidant power, but green tea also includes ECGC, an especially powerful antioxidant. A recent Japanese study showed that men who regularly drink green tea had lower cholesterol than men who didn’t. Researchers in Spain and the United Kingdom have also shown that ECGC can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. For a double health whammy, replace sugary sodas with tea. JUNE 2014

www.siparent.com

In recognition of Father’s Day and National Men’s Health Week (June 9th-15th), let’s heighten awareness of preventable health issues and encourage early detection of disease in our fathers, grandfathers, and sons. An important step in helping the men in your life with prevention is through screenings. People need to be familiar with changes in their own body and know their family’s health history. As men age, they need to be aware of recommended screenings and any health concerns or risks. Keeping up with screenings is one of the best ways to prevent disease and can truly save your life!

Yearly Physical A yearly physical with your primary care physician is a vital component of knowing the baseline levels for all parts of your health. An easy way to keep track is to make your appointment in June as part of National Men’s Health Month. When you see Father’s Day popping up in stores, you will be reminded to make your annual appointment! During a yearly comprehensive physical, your doctor will perform or order appropriate tests for your age. Throughout the appointment the doctor will review in detail: past and present medical, family, and surgical history; any medication, herbs, or supplements that are taken regularly or have been in the past; and will go over immunization records to make sure you are current. A head-to-toe physical examination will be performed. Your doctor depends on you to share some important information when they ask about any changes you notice. Have you had more migraine headaches? Do you notice a change in vision or memory? These changes need to be communicated to your doctor. Symptoms that go unmentioned could have been important pieces of your puzzle. Once the exam is complete, your doctor will determine if screenings need to be performed based on the exam, your age, and medical history.

Screenings From 18 to 39 years old, men should have their blood pressure

checked and have their annual exam. Every three years, bloodwork and a urinalysis should be completed. During a man’s 40s, a blood pressure check, bloodwork and a urinalysis should be done annually. The bloodwork looks to detect out of range levels, like high cholesterol and diabetes. A baseline skin screening with a dermatologist should be considered, they can determine based on that exam how often follow-up visits are needed. After a man reaches the age of 50, he should have a prostate exam, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and annually screen for colorectal cancer. After 50, men, especially smokers and diabetics, should undergo a cardiovascular screening. Based on history, lung cancer screenings for men at risk among other screenings may become recommended. After 65, smokers should be screened to rule out an abdominal aortic aneurism.

Keep the Men in Your Life Healthy Take care of the people around you. Make sure that your father, son, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friends are all taking care of themselves and undergoing the appropriate screenings for their stage of life. By checking in on one another we can all work together in an effort to increase the amount of preventative health screenings the men in our community are undergoing. We can all work together to live happier and healthier lives. To find out more about screenings, please call Dr. Beylinson’s staff at 718979-1794.

PARENTING 411

>>> PARENTING

A PERFECTIONIST

lothes having to match. Toys arranged in neat rows. Outbursts over not being able to get a task right the first time. These behaviors can indicate to parents that they may have a perfectionist on their hands, for better or worse. Perfectionists have high standards. Perfectionists can be driven to achieve. But they can also get tied up in knots over their expectations of themselves. And as psychologist Madeline Levine suggests in her book Teach Your Children Well, performance-oriented children "are so afraid of failing that they challenge themselves far less, take fewer risks, and therefore limit opportunities for growth." How can parents recognize a perfectionist tendency in their child? And what actions can they take to help their child do their best without getting hung up on "best" never being good enough? A few experts and moms offer their advice:

C

ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO DO HIS BEST WITHOUT GETTING HUNG UP ON PERFECTION.

Model Making Mistakes The truth is, as adults we can also struggle with setting our standards too high for ourselves, and our children. We may not handle our own failure well, unwittingly communicating a negative attitude toward mistakes. Instead we can help our children by admitting our own behavior needs an adjustment. "You don't want to stress that children shouldn't make mistakes in the first place," says Dr. Wendy Grolnick, psychologist and author of Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids. "You want to have the attitude that mistakes are our friends. We learn from them." Kelly Arabie, a mom of two, works to pass this attitude along to her kids. "The faith journey I've been on has taught me that life is very much a process and that I'm not going to be perfect as long as I'm living. It's a gift I can give my children to be able to share that with them." Occasionally point out a mistake you made to your child. Talk about the outcome - that it didn't derail life and that it doesn't reflect poorly on you. Explain what you'll do to correct the mistake or what you plan to do differently the next time. Let your child see you learn from your mistake. This goes for owning up to imperfect parenting too. Allowing your child to let you off the hook for a mistake made toward him helps him develop a tolerance and compassion toward others' blunders. It can also help him understand that others will want to show the same compassion for his errors. Ultimately he'll learn to be compassionate toward himself.

Focus on the Process Not the Outcome Perfectionists tend to be most concerned about the end product. Oftentimes a perfectionist will redo work over and over in an attempt to achieve a flawless result. But they miss the enjoyment of learning along the way. Kathryn Johnson's son, Alex, is a hard-working student who takes this approach. "I see him striving to do his best," she says. "But it borders on constant dissatisfaction. He always thinks, 'I can do better.'" Unfortunately, these children don't always gain much for their efforts: a York University study of elementary and middle-school students found that perfectionists didn't score any better than their peers. But don't tell a perfectionist that. Their competitive nature will only push them harder toward the goal of doing better than others. Of course, as Dr. Grolnick points out, our outcome-based academic culture isn't helping them any either. "There's more competition than ever before. There's more stress on grades and standardized test scores. It is a setup for kids focusing on outcomes." Parents can help by encouraging the child to recognize his growth and what he has learned from an assignment or task. Instead of asking “what grade did you get” ask “what did you learn about today,”or ”'what stood out from the unit you just completed.” "I would like to see learning as a lifetime process and help my children to see that as well," says Arabie. Which makes it important for parents to talk about what they're learning too. Children appreciate seeing that mom and dad, who they might think know it all, are still acquiring knowledge and skills. And they're still enjoying the act of learning itself.

A focus on outcomes also plays out in an aversion to challenges. Perfectionists will stick with tasks they're sure to complete well, instead of delving into new territory. It's up to parents to notice this behavior and assist their child in combating it. Dr. Levine notes, "The best way we can help our children welcome challenges is to encourage them to work just outside their comfort zone, stand by to lend a hand when needed, and model enthusiasm for challenging tasks." Live With Limits Johnson found it helped her son when she set limits for completing tasks. "A lot of it was encouraging him to stop working on something," she says. "We had to help him realize that at some point he'd wreck his work in trying to fix it." Letting go has been central in his adjustments. And learning to pick a stopping point. Otherwise, as she puts it, "where does it end?" Try setting a deadline for completing a task. Use a timer during homework. Parents may also find their child letting natural deadlines speed up their work - procrastination can be common among perfectionists. For a procrastinator, chunk projects into smaller pieces and set mini-deadlines for achieving each of those chunks. Perfectionists also need to learn to live with their own limits. This means acknowledging that the ideal in their head may not be possible in this world. A good phrase to teach a perfectionist to say to himself is: "This is the best I can do for now," promoting the idea that improvement is always possible. Validate the Child For Who He Is Parents can inadvertently communicate that they value accomplishment and results, what Grolnick calls "contingent parental regard" by giving more attention when a child performs well, and less when they don't. It's easy to slip into when we want to praise a child for work well done. But it can work against us when the child associates the praise with being valued for what they do. Let your child know your love is unconditional. Be vocal about it. Grolnick says parents should tell their kids, "You're no less loved if you don't do something perfectly." Arabie echoes this in how she talks with her children. She'll tell them, "I love you for who you are and not what you do." It may take being specific, such as telling your child that it's okay that they struggle in a certain area or that a B or C grade is just fine. As you implement any or all of these strategies remember: parenting any child, perfectionist or not, is an imperfect job done by imperfect people. Which makes each of us practically perfect for doing it.

Solid Advice on Improving Children’s Basic Skills and Addressing Parental Concerns

Question: So much of the oversight in the home of child’s educational progress is often by the mother. Fathers, too, should be involved with their children's learning. The extent and form of participation is very important. It is sitting with the children gently, with much patience and consistency, and helping the child progress. Standing back and using threatening words and actions are counterproductive.

Many fathers will go to the parent-teacher conferences, but the real involvement begins when the father begins to work consistently with the children— one-to-one. The idea that "mothers always have lots of time, and fathers are always too busy to be involved in their children's schooling is a big joke!" — Teacher Answer: You are correct that fathers should be involved in their children's education. According to the PTA, studies show students perform better when mothers and fathers are both involved in the education of their children. Men and women think differently and bring different perspectives and skills to school and PTA activities. School communities and PTAs thrive when both men and women participate. Yet men remain a largely untapped resource. .

Taking Younger Children to Visit Colleges Question: : My wife and I are both college graduates, and we definitely want our three children -- ages 6, 8 and 15 -- to go to college. We talk to them often about how much we enjoyed college. When is the best time to take them on college visits? — College Bound Answer: Your 15-year-old should be visiting colleges now. And it is not too early for the other two children to get an idea of what college is like. College visits usually should begin at schools close to your home. Your first visits should include fun activities, from college sporting events to special campus events to hiking or camping in the area. Younger children just need to get the flavor of what college campuses are like.

46

JUNE 2014

www.siparent.com

Your older child needs to have a checklist of things to see at each school, including taking a campus tour, visiting a class, checking out eating and dorm facilities, talking to students and learning about the courses offered. After each visit, he or she should write down which aspects of a school appealed to him or

her and which ones didn't. It will make it far easier later on to make a decision about where to apply. Incidentally, visits for older children need not be limited to schools they might want to attend, as each visit will help them formulate what they really want in a college. The ideal time for college visits for high-schoolers is when school is in session -- simply because it gives the best picture of college life. Nevertheless, summer vacation visits can be very helpful, as it gives children of all ages an idea of what other things in the area around a college might make a particular school appealing, from mountains to the seashore to big-city or rural life. So when families are on vacation this summer, they should make an effort to at least drive through a few college campuses near their vacation spots.

What to Consider in Delaying Kindergarten Entrance Question: My 4-year-old son is currently in preschool. He'll be five in early fall, easily making the cut-off for kindergarten. My concern is for next year. I do not believe that he will be ready to handle our district's full-day kindergarten. He is exhausted and cranky now after two and a half hours of school. Plus, he still has a tough time adjusting to my leaving him at preschool. Am I allowed to delay his entrance into kindergarten for a year? Would I then send him to kindergarten or first grade? I know there's a lot of research that supports holding children with late birthdays back from starting kindergarten until they are older. My son will be ready academically, but I'm not sure that is enough. — Ready or Not

Answer: Holding a young child back for a year before enrolling him or her in a public school kindergarten is no longer a possibility for most parents in New York City. Recent legislation has made attendance in kindergarten mandatory for children in the year they turn 5. Of course, parents may avoid this by either homeschooling their child or enrolling the child in a private school. Parents who hold a 5-year-old child back from attending public school kindergarten need to understand that the child will have to be enrolled in first grade the following year – not kindergarten. In the past, this was the official rule; however, many exceptions were made. This is no longer the case. Today, parents who feel their 5-year-old child is not ready for kindergarten should meet with the principal of the school the child should attend and discuss why they feel that way and their child’s needs. The decision is ultimately made by the principal and superintendent in conjunction with the family. Parents should send questions to dearteacher@dearteacher.com or ask them on the columnists’ website at www.dearteacher.com.

It was a really lovely early evening in the beginning of FATHER’S DAY June. Usually, Erica and Monica would be sitting outside enjoying the sun-filled day. Sometimes their mom would join them and sometimes even Grandma would come over for dinner and would sit in the sun and read her book until dinner was ready. But this day was different. Last Saturday at Bagels at Grandma’s, the five cousins had talked about what to do for their dads to celebrate Father’s Day. The five cousins had agreed that they would do something but could not decide what that something would be. So, Erica, the oldest of the cousins, had suggested that they spend a few days to think of ideas and then meet to decide their plans. This evening, after Ryan (the second oldest cousin) got home from work, the cousins met at Liam’s house. His mom prepared a dinner of chicken cutlets, rice, and corn and french fries for anyone who preferred the fries to rice. Liam whispered to his cousins that dessert would be awesome. He had noticed his mom preparing a cake pan to go into the oven and the aroma coming from the oven a few minutes later smelled absolutely delicious. Liam said that he didn’t know what the dessert was, but he was pretty sure it would be great. After eating dinner, but before dessert, Erica suggested that they put their thinking caps on and start the meeting. Monica agreed, as did Ryan, Philip, and Liam. “Okay,” Erica said and she continued, “The purpose of this meeting is to decide how to make three dads feel special on Father’s Day.” Liam’s mom came to the table to clear it of dishes and leftover food. (Hardly any. Everything was delicious to five hungry young people!) She had some paper and markers, which she left on the table in case someone wanted to take notes or write down a reminder. After Liam’s mom went into the kitchen to join Philip’s and Ryan’s mom and Erica’s and Monica’s mom, Philip spoke up and said, “Before we start, I just want to say what I think we don’t want to do for our dads.” Ryan looked at his brother and asked, “What would that be, Philip?” Philip, who had been somewhat serious when he made his statement, now laughed and answered Ryan. “Let’s not buy any ties!” “Why do you say we shouldn’t buy our dads a tie?” Monica wanted to know. “Because in a joke book I saw recently there was a picture of a dad with 10 ties on the wall and the dad in the cartoon says, ‘Yep, got them all for Christmas or Father’s Day’ and he is pointing at all the ties.”

“Why were they on the wall?” Liam asked. Philip replied, “I don’t know, but that’s how it looked in the cartoon.”

Ryan said, “They were probably on a tie rack – that would look like they were pinned to the wall.” “I think Ryan is right,” Monica added. “My dad does have a tie rack.” Liam had been thinking. He had a serious look on his face which now turned to a big smile.

“Why are you smiling, Liam?” Philip asked. “Well, I think we could start by making our dads a Father’s Day card. My dad always liked the cards I made for him when I was younger.” Monica responded, “I agree with Liam. We could buy cards, but making them is much more personal. And I have some stickers I’ll share. We can use them on our cards.” Erica laughed, “Liam, does your mom have envelopes for our cards? We can put stickers on the envelopes like Grandma does with her cards.” Liam’s mom came back into the room with envelopes and stickers and said, “I heard you. So, here are envelopes. You have paper and markers and, look at this, I have stickers, too.” “I’ll make a card but I want to buy flowers for my dad. He always buys flowers for my mom and I think he would like some for himself,” Philip explained and turned to his brother and asked, “Ryan, can you drive me to a place where I can buy Dad flowers?” “Sure,” Ryan replied. “I like your idea, Philip. I think what I would like to do is take Dad to breakfast. He often takes us, so I think it would be nice to treat him.” “That sounds like a good idea to me, too,” Erica added. Monica looked at her sister and nodded her head in agreement. “Why don’t we all take our dads to breakfast?” Liam said, “I think my dad would really like that, but we have to go to a place that has sausages – cause that’s what he likes for Sunday breakfast.” Erica said “I think this meeting has been very productive. We have handmade cards for our dads and we’ll meet for breakfast at about 11 am on Sunday. Do we all agree?”

COVER STORY

Get Ready for the

BIG “K”

Prepare Your Child This Summer

It's the precious, carefree summer days before your youngster sets out into the world beyond home: Kindergarten. For the next thirteen years, your child will spend as much, if not more, time in school than at home. School will be the springboard to learning, friendships, and ultimately, a career. Help your child prepare for this journey; get him ready for success; encourage him to enjoy discovery, and assist him to meet the challenges which are ahead. Each youngster arrives at the Kindergarten door with a different level of preparedness. You want your son or daughter to be ready to learn. Some of the basic "readiness" skills are: number concepts, naming colors, identifying shapes, comparing things that are the same and different, speaking and listening vocabulary, and general information about self and the world in which he or she lives.

Here are twelve quick and easy at-home activities you can do with your youngster to enhance these skills: Cut and paste pictures from magazines; name the items in each picture, make up a funny sentence about each. This will help develop find motor skills and build vocabulary.

1 2 3

Trace around hands, feet, cookie cutters, jar covers, popsicle sticks and other objects. This is another fine motor activity and enhances

creativity. Line up items such as blocks, spoons, cups, and clothespins to create left to right progression and visual patterns. This improves visual perception, sequencing, and organization. It helps children to find similarities and differences in objects. It also simulates the left to right eye movement used when actually reading books. Start with a one-step direction, then a twopart, to help children learn how to listen and follow directions. You can help your child follow directions and complete tasks by using auditory and visual clues. For example, use the words, first, next, and then when breaking jobs into various steps. You can also hold up a finger and as you state each step in the direction, stating #1 do …, #2 do …, and #3 do … Another helpful tip is to have the child repeat the task(s) back to you. You can ask,“What are you going to do first? And then?”

4

Share your "junk" mail; open envelopes, sort by size, discuss the picture on the stamps, find letters or numbers and circle them. Children can sort envelopes by size, color, and those with and without windows. They can sort the actual mail by size. You can use a highlighter to find a certain letter, perhaps start with the first letter of your child’s first name. They can cut the stamp out and paste them on pretend mail they can give to family members. You can have your child sort the stamps by their design, for example, flags, animals, flowers, people, and so on. You can extend this by allowing your child to put stamps on your outgoing mail, and let them purchase stamps at the post office.

5

After a trip to the store, post office, or church, have your child tell something about what he saw on the ride. To practice sequencing, ask: what happened first, next, etc.; write it down and let him draw a picture. This increases vocabulary and organization of time sequences. You can prompt your child by asking, which event happened first, for example,“Did we get dressed first or did we drive in the car first?” Also, ask about people you saw or buildings you passed along the way.

6

Write or draw in sand, flour, sugar, etc.; Hint: keep it in a zip-lock bag for reuse. Shaving cream is also fun for art expression. This activity begins to stimulate an interest in both art and science. It develops recognition of tactile sensation and differences between solids and liquids. It encourages

creativity and free expression. It can also be used to reinforce shapes, letters, and numbers. Additionally, this is another activity for fine motor control.

Summer is a time for having fun in the sun! But too much sun can be dangerous for babies and young children. There are crucial steps parents should take to ensure their children are being safe while having fun. Here are some tips for protecting little ones from the summer sun: • If possible, try to time outdoor activities outside the hours of peak sun, before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. • Wear protective clothing and a hat with a broad brim to help keep cool and protect skin from dangerous UV rays, especially during the peak hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s also important to wear sunglasses that block out UV rays. • To avoid sunburn, apply a generous amount of sunscreen to exposed surfaces – especially the child’s face, nose, ears, feet and hands, and the backs of the knees – and reapply about every two hours, especially after swimming or playing outdoors. • Choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection that blocks both UVA and UVB radiation with an SPF of 15 or higher. Sunscreen should be used even on cloudy days, because the sun’s rays penetrate through the clouds. • Keep young infants under six months old out of direct sunlight when possible. If there is no way to avoid the sunlight, sunscreen may be applied to small areas of skin uncovered by clothing and hats. But be watchful of the child so that they don’t ingest the sunscreen – for example, if it has been applied to hands, which young children tend to put in mouths. Provided by Sophie J. JOIN US & OVER 7,000 OF OUR CLOSEST FRIENDS TO DISCUSS TODAY'S ISSUES. IT'S FUN! S.I. Parent: When it comes to planning family travel, new studies have shown that kids are more involved than ever. Do your kids have an input in where you go on vacation? Donna Hawks Lewis: Yes. He is not the ultimate decision maker but I will ask his opinion and show him pictures/ reviews etc. of different options. At the end of the day WE adults decide, but its definitely with him in mind since its a family vacation. Lynda Buonincontri Stegman: I plan our family vacations with my daughter’s opinion. This year I gave her a choice... cruise or Disney and she chose Disney.

Last month on Facebook we chatted about Mother’s Day, baby showers, and more. Aside from all the input you'll get from fellow Staten Islanders, it's where we post updates on what's going on, as well as some funny cartoons – because we all need a laugh from time to time. Join us. We'd like to hear what YOU think!

Your Royal Highness: Yes. We've been going to child friendly resorts to keep the little one happy as well as happy parents lol..just got back from Disney. Fun for all. Paola Schirripa- Reich: No we tell them where we going.

S.I. Parent: For moms who work outside the home: Do your parents and/or in-laws provide childcare while you work? Do you lay out the rules for them to follow, or do they insist on using their own style of parenting? Victoria Ferrantelli Wickman: My parents take care of mine. It's a little of both. Since they are in their care they need to be given a little leeway with how I raise them. But sometimes they are a little too lenient because they are grandparents and that's when I step up. Sonia Ashburn: Whomever is watching your child should use their own style- as long as the parent has no objections to that style.

Fela Wolski: My mother in law is watching my son since he was 4 months old. I told her what I expect from her according to my child's routine and thankfully she understood. I told her what time he should nap and for how long, what to eat, and about the use of pacifiers. She of course puts some of her ideas into his day but mostly she listens to what I tell her. She understands that he's my son and she should not interfere in my style of raising him. Right now he's 2 years old and I can not complain on how this works for us. Make sure whoever babysits your child knows how you feel about certain things and you have to be really strict about it. Good luck.

Automatic locks on the family car. Check. Safety deposit box for valuable papers. Check. Padlocks for bicycles. Check. Secure passwords for online assets. Uh-oh. Now that families conduct so much of their social and financial business online, strong passwords are every bit as important as sturdy locks on the doors of your house. Unfortunately, parents who are very conscientious about other forms of family security often do the virtual equivalent of leaving the key under the doormat. The recent security scare called Heartbleed should have been a wake up call. If you haven’t already changed passwords for your online accounts, now is the time. And while you’re at it, teach your kids to create smart passwords too. (A curriculum for doing just that is available from Common Sense Media commonsensemedia.org/educators/lesson/strong-passwords-3-5). The simplest way to manage passwords is to store them all in a vault-like piece of software that will generate, encrypt and remember highly secure passwords on your behalf. Free and reliable programs are available from LastPass, KeePass, and Norton Identity Safe. Just be sure that the program you choose will allow easy access on all the devices you use.

Unfortunately, setting up password software requires time that busy parents may not have. Also, the password that gets you into the software becomes the equivalent of the one ring that binds them all, so if you forget it you are doomed. Those who decide to forgo software need to get serious about creating tough passwords. The first rule is to avoid weaknesses that create openings for trolls, bullies, hackers, and identify thieves. Here are three things you don’t want to do: No personal information. Professional hackers know that it’s easier to remember details from your own life, so if you become a target the first passwords they’ll try are names of people and places that are meaningful to you. Google yourself. Anything that comes up won’t be a good password. That includes birthdates, addresses, employers, phone number, names of family and friends. Next review your social media profiles. Don’t use anything that’s ever been listed as a favorite. Avoid recognizable words. Many programs have been designed to crack passwords, and most start with a dictionary of words in English and other languages. Using any recognizable word including proper nouns makes you more vulnerable. Adding an unexpected capital letter, a random number, or an exclamation point makes the password a bit stronger but not much. Don’t be cute—or lazy. Despite years of warnings, people still use “default” passwords like “guest” and “password” as well as sequences of keys on the

62

keyboard such as 890-=\ or qwert. Hackers are also acquainted with obvious substitutions like & for E or @ for A or 2 for “to.” And it’s not especially clever to use well-known number sequences like Pi or the Fibonnaci series. Strong passwords are long (use at least 8 and preferably 12 characters) and varied (use a combination of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and symbols). Of course, a long and varied password is harder to remember. Here are several ways to generate passwords that are both random and memorable: Initialing. Choose a title, phrase, or quotation that means something to you. Use the initial letter of each word as your password. Toss in caps, numbers and symbols to make it harder to hack.

MAKING THE WORLD BRIGHTER, ONE CHILD AT AT TIME

Letter Scramble. Start with a longish word or short phrase that you will remember. Scramble the letters and substitute numbers and symbols for some of them. Mix It Up. Choose two words that mean something to you and alternate their letters. If your dog’s name is Skippy and you live at 345 Woodside, your password would be 3S4k5iWpopoyd. Diceware. To get really random results, roll the dice. Diceware.com lists 7776 words corresponding to all the combinations that are possible when you throw five dice. The website also provides detailed instructions about how to use the list to create very secure passwords and phrases. Websites. Although many websites offer to generate passwords on your behalf, don’t use one unless you trust the company behind it. For example, the well-known Norton Security company offers a free password generator at identitysafe.norton.com/password-generator. Experts disagree about whether passwords should be recorded. Most say that a password that’s hard to crack will also be hard to remember, so you’ll probably want to keep a copy somewhere safe. Consider a locked drawer or between the pages of a favorite book. A Post-It note on the computer monitor is not a good place for password. Eventually everyone forgets a password, so be sure your password recovery systems are up-to-date. Many websites send a prompt or reset option to an email address. If you change your email, update the sites that require passwords. Providing a cellphone number also provides a layer of security, especially if you have a cellphone that can be locked if it’s lost. Once you’ve found what seems like a great password, there’s a temptation to use it often and keep it forever. Don’t. Experts recommend using different passwords, especially for sites that involve financial information. And put a “Change passwords” reminder on the calendar so you do it at least as often as you change the oil in the car. Many security experts argue that passwords are obsolete. Perhaps by the time your kids are adults, they may be able to protect their online assets with a fingerprint or a DNA scan. In the meantime however, mastering the art of strong passwords is just one more way parents can have the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’ve protected what is precious to your family. TEACHING TODDLERS HOW TO SHARE

n important lesson every child learns one way or another throughout his life is how to share with others. With six kids of my own, and one more on the way, I’ve learned many tips that have helped me teach my children to share.

A

1. Lead by Example: When teaching your child to share it’s important to lead by example and do your part by sharing your things with those around you. Share whenever possible and make a point to discuss the importance of sharing with your child. There are lots of things you can share with your family everyday, and when you do so, make a point to highlight the act of sharing.

SIMPLE TIPS TO TEACH CHILDREN HOW TO SHARE.

You might just be surprised at what you learn and uncover. 2. Positive Reinforcement: It’s all about the positive reinforcement and encouragement. You have to make your child want to share. One way to inspire this behavior is with rewards. Allow your child to earn points/stickers/rewards every time they share, and after a certain amount of time they can work up to a greater reward such as a special activity of their choosing. Decide upon a reward system that works for your family and be consistent. 3. Communicate: If your child is having a hard time sharing, talk with them and try to figure out what’s going on. Discuss why sharing is important and is a nice thing to do. Give your child the opportunity to genuinely and openly explain why they don’t want to share their belongings, and go from there.

64

JUNE 2014

4. Be Patient: Learning to share doesn’t happen overnight, and often times being overly possessive can be a phase your toddler will grow out of. In times of doubt, just be patient and positive and continue working toward the ultimate goal of sharing. These tips have been helpful for me in the past, and I hope they’ll work for you too. Happy parenting! By Robert Nickell, aka Daddy Nickell, father of 6, and founder of Daddyscrubs.com.

Although many children benefit the most from getting braces between the ages of 10 and 15, the American Association of Orthodontists as well as international orthodontic authorities advise that children should get their first orthodontic screening by the age of seven, when there may be a mixture of permanent and juvenile teeth in the child's mouth. The orthodontist may be able to forecast any future problems that may arise and note if there are any preliminary steps that can be taken. Even though many children wait until adolescence to get braces, and most doctors will want to monitor kids' oral structure as they grow, familiarity with a child's mouth enables an

orthodontist to act when the time is right. Some orthodontists work to remedy an overbite or underbite, and they also may address spacing issues.

How braces work Braces straighten teeth by putting steady pressure on the teeth to help shift the teeth into correct position. The orthodontist will determine how long to keep the braces on.

As the teeth shift, the wires that are part of the braces will be cut and adjusted accordingly. Teeth that require extra help may necessitate the use of specialized headgear to impart extra pressure on the mouth.

Braces will require some alterations to a child's diet as well as his or her oral hygiene routine. Sticky foods or ones with small particles that tend to lodge between the teeth should be avoided as much as possible. Chewing gum can be exceptionally troublesome. Sticky candies may get stuck, and you could pull off brackets trying to unlodge the candy. Keeping teeth clean also will require a few extra steps. Because of the small parts and crevices braces create in the mouth, food can lodge in areas more easily. If left that way, one could end up with tooth decay. It is adviseable to use specially designed floss brushes and picks to clean the teeth and dislodge any trapped particles. Also, continue with routine dental cleanings as scheduled.

After braces At the time braces are removed, most patients are fitted for a retainer that will be worn at certain periods of the day (usually at night) to help keep teeth aligned properly. It is important to continue to use the retainer as advised by the orthodontist to help prevent teeth from shifting or becoming crooked once more. Braces are often an important component of oral health and a necessity for thousands of people. They're generally applied during the preteen years, but younger children as well as adults have used braces successfully.

MAKE FATHER'S DAY MORE ENJOYABLE FOR DAD ad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and award him with gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. Father's Day activities should be centered around Dad's interests. With that in mind, the following are some ideas to honor Dad in your life. Sports Sunday: If Dad is a sports fan, his idea of spending a fun-filled afternoon very well may be cheering on his favorite players. Whether your father enjoys golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, or another sport like hunting or fishing, chances are there is a television broadcast on that you can watch together. Otherwise, you can surprise Dad by purchasing tickets to a sporting event and making a day of it at the ballpark. Beach bound: A relaxing day at the beach may be the perfect way to spend Father's Day. Dad can enjoy the entire family while sitting back in his beach chair and watching the waves roll in. Pack a picnic lunch with his favorite foods and a cold beer, and Dad may just say this was his best celebration yet. Adventure seeker: If Dad enjoys living on the edge, a Father's Day activity built around action and adventure should be a winner. Take Dad base jumping, rock climbing, scuba diving, or race car driving. Any of these activities is bound to get his adrenaline pumping. R&R: A relaxing day in the yard swimming laps in the pool or hitting a few grounders to your waiting baseball mitt may be all the excitement he needs. Toss a few steaks on the grill to give it a truly perfect ending. Impromptu party: Some dads like to be the center of attention. A Father's Day party thrown in his honor, complete with friends and family, can be an entertaining way to spend the day. If you are worried about interrupting others' Father's Day plans, host the gathering on the Saturday before Father's Day and let Dad be the life of the party. Include finger foods, barbecue, a limited list of cocktails and other beverages and some background music. Plan a Father's Day celebration with your dad in mind. Cater to his favorite activities and opt for entertainment that he will enjoy.

Hi! My name’s Giavanna, but everyone calls me Gigi. There’s so much going on in my life that I want to share with you. That’s why, with the help of my mom Gina LaGuardia-Schrecker, VP of Content Development and Social Media for The CollegeBound Network, I am writing a monthly kid’s-eye view of what it is like in my world.

Two Peas in a Pod They say kids are copies of their parents in one way or another. We have the same eyes, dimples, shape of face, body type, personality, smile, etc. The bonds I share with my dad are not only shaped by what we have in common, they are strengthened by them. The jokes we laugh at, the songs we love, the food we crave, even the things that make us moody – they’re all part of what I call the “Gigi-Daddy Connection.” Read on... My Dad and I Both.... ...enjoy a good sushi or Indian food lunch special. My sister and mom aren’t fans of cucumber and shrimp rolls or tandoori chicken like we are, which is totally fine because it gives us a few (sort of!) exotic places to enjoy together, all on our own. ...love the library. Dad reads books like there’s no tomorrow, so our weekly walks to the library are more for him than us sometimes. ...belt out the lyrics to our favorite songs. Whenever “Radioactive” comes on the radio in the car, for instance, you’d know it from down the block because we obnoxiously sing/yell at the top of our lungs. ...like watching baseball. I’ve only recently gotten into this, but I’ve realized how much fun it is. Plus, sitting side by side with Dad can never do me wrong! ...think it’s funny to tease Mommy. Usually it’s about silly things like how she loves vegetables and her unmatched pajamas, but no matter what, it always gets us all giggling. ....crack up daily at my little sister. People say I’m funny, but they really need to hang out with Jordanna. That kid can crack one-liners and witty comebacks with the best of ‘em!

...get miffed when people are late. I guess it’s because the importance of being on time is something Dad has really drilled into us. Whatever the

reason, it irks us when we are waiting around for others to show up to things when there was an agreed-upon time. …actually like to go grocery shopping. We call it going to the “stupidmarket,” a silly word that makes me laugh no matter how many times Dad calls it that. We’re always on a “snack mission” when food shopping – sort of like the anti-Mommy (vegetables, remember?!). It’s always an adventure with my dad because he lets me choose things like those individual packets of water flavoring that mom says are garbage, the mega-huge “You don’t need that many!” (mom again!) boxes of lunchbox-perfect chip bags, and something he calls “TV dinners.” …never grow old of Build-A-Bear Workshop. In fact, this is one of “our places.” About twice a year, my dad takes my sister, my little cousin, and me on a “date night” to build a bear and then out for fancy Chinese food (well, the restaurant is a little fancier than our usual place down the block, anyway). It’s one of our favorite things to do together. …enjoy hanging out with our cousins. It could be relaxing by the fire pit (Daddy and my Uncle Matt) or playing dress-up fashion show for the 67th time (a favorite of my twin cousins). No matter what it is, we find comfort and laughter in just being with family. … like organization and clean houses. Although I tend to take after Mommy a bit when I leave things all over the place, at the end of the day, I do like order. Dad is the king at that. He’s always running behind us with the mini vacuum and putting something in its spot.

…think tickling is the best. He’s the tickler and I’m the ticklee, and it’s so much fun. We usually end our day this way; it’s one of our bedtime rituals I hope I never get too old for. Despite the fact that I’m growing up, my mom says that many of these things have set the “foundation” for the amazing relationship my dad and I share. These are the moments I’ll cherish forever, she says – maybe not as deeply now as I will when I’m fully grown up–but I do enjoy them. Hands down, my dad makes me laugh every single day and I always feel loved by him. He has a larger-than-life quality, which makes his love bigger than anything, too. We are very, very lucky to have him, and I’m glad we’re so similar. Happy Father’s Day, Daddy!

SPEECH PATHOLOGY

FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
