helicopters will land on midland field to kick off fleet week 2019!
Fleet Week It’s finally Fleet Week, and the fun begins right here in Staten Island! On Tuesday, May 21, at 10am, your family can watch helicopters descend on Miller Field in New Dorp to kick off the week-long series of events in celebration of our nation’s Armed Forces. The event is free and open to the public and includes free tours of the helicopters, official air and land demonstrations, military personnel and displays, and much more. The following morning, view the famous Parade of Ships as they make their way down the New York Harbor (visible along the Hudson River from Battery Park to just south of the George Washington Bridge). Here in Staten Island, you can watch the nautical parade from Fort Wadsworth Overlook (210 New York Avenue). The event is followed by Navy Band concerts in both Washington Square Park and the South Street Seaport, as well as a performance by the U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team at the South Street Seaport. Free ship tours are available to the public from 8am to 5pm at Pier 88 in Manhattan and at USS The Sullivans Homeport Pier (305 Front Street) in Staten Island and at Pier 86 in Manhattan (Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum), 10am to 3pm. The tours will be open from Wednesday, May 22 until Monday, May 27. The ships will depart on Tuesday, May 28, signaling the official end of Fleet Week. Festive events are scheduled throughout New York City all week long. For more information about Fleet Week, go to militarynews.com/app/fleetweeknewyork. To find out about Staten Island Fleet Week, which includes free ship tours and a live music festival at Sullivans Pier on Memorial Day Weekend, go to sifleetweek.com. Bronx Zoo Dinosaur Safari Returns
Support a Camp for Kids with Cancer
The Bronx Zoo has featured dinosaur exhibits before, but the zoo’s newest Dinosaur Safari is the biggest and most realistic dinosaur ride in the country, according to the zoo. The experience will take riders through 2 acres of woods, in which they will meet animatronic dinosaurs including two 40-foot-long infamous T. rexes, a 60-foot-long herbivore called Omeisaurus, and the Spinosaurus, which was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs to ever exist. The Omeisaurus, while lesser known, will delight dinosaur fanatics as it towers over the safari trail. The dinosaurs roar, call out to each other, and interact with each other in amazing ways. The Dinosaur Safari is a limited engagement ride—it will run April 19-Nov. 3 only. Dino lovers can immerse themselves in the experience with the zoo’s Total Experience ticket. Get the full scoop from our sister publication, NY Metro Parent, by linking to their review at siparent.com.
Want to bring some summer sunshine to the lives of children battling cancer? Join SunriseWALKS on Sunday, June 2, at Mount Loretto, 6581 Hylan Boulevard and help raise the funds needed to provide as many as 100 children – those with cancer and their siblings – with a fun summer at the Lucille & Jay Chazanoff Sunrise Day Camp. The six-week day camp is completely free of charge, including transportation, and welcomes all who are eligible. You can help by participating in the SunriseWALKS event on Sunday, June 3 (registration opens at 9am and the WALK starts at 10:30am) at Mount Loretto. The short walk is followed immediately by a family carnival. You can form your own team with friends or donate to an existing team. Registration is $20 for adults and $10 for kids under 12. Not big on walking? You can donate to this wonderful cause at sunrise-walks.org/si. Visit their website to register for the walk as well. The event is sponsored by The Jewish Community Center as well as Catholic Charities of Staten Island.
2019 Annual TD 5 Boro Bike Tour The TD Five Boro Bike Tour has been a major New York City event for both cyclists and onlookers since it started in 1977. On Sunday, May 5, thousands of cyclists of all ages and skill levels will spin their wheels freely throughout all five boroughs where the streets have been cleared of cars. The 40-mile tour kicks off at 7:30am in lower Manhattan and will conclude at Fort Wadsworth here in Staten Island, where a festival is held at the finish line. The tour is the largest charitable bike ride in the U.S., with proceeds funding Bike NYC’s free bike education programs. If your plans that day don’t include a bicycle, you might want to steer clear of traveling far. Parts of the Verrazano Bridge will be closed for the duration of the tour, along with many streets and other bridges located within New York City.
Sad News for Local Sports Hero Local travel baseball coach Scott Kain, who was featured in Staten Island Parent’s February Good Sports column, lost his nearly lifelong battle with cancer on April 2 at age 54. Kain coached in the Line Drive baseball program for many years and made tons of friends while impacting hundreds of young athletes along the way. Good Sports writer Joe LoVerde expressed his sadness over the loss: “To say he’ll be missed is an understatement.” Rest in peace, Scott.
NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy The NYPD Summer Youth Police Academy gives kids between the ages of 10 and 15 the opportunity to spend their summer training with the NYPD. Police officer-led classes include lectures, role-plays, and demonstrations in the areas of law, behavioral science, drug prevention and gang resistance. The program also provides participants with lunch, uniform shirts, and field trips. Students engage in military drills like those done in the Police Academy and go on field trips to police facilities. Accepted participants will attend the academy that is closest to their home. In Staten Island, it’s offered at Curtis High School (105 Hamilton Avenue) with the 120 Precinct, and at New Dorp High School (465 New Dorp Lane) with the 122 Precinct. Participants attend five days a week for six weeks, from 8:30am to 2pm. The academy starts on Monday, July 1 and the last day is Friday, August 9. Applications must be submitted by Friday, May 31 and you will be contacted if your child is accepted. Preference will be given to those who have not attended the academy previously. For more information, call the Community Affairs Bureau’s Youth Strategies Division at 718-312-5079. Link to the application at siparent.com/nypd-summer-youth-police-academy.

Lazy Parenting One parent’s argument for ‘bare minimum parenting’
T
Sometimes parenting can feel overwhelming, so one parent is here to say it’s okay to be a “lazy parent.” James Breakwell, author of Bare Minimum Parenting: The Ultimate Guide to Not-Quite Ruining Your Child, shares five things you can do to slow down and enjoy the adventure of parenting. So go ahead, indulge in “lazy parenting”!
here’s an abundance of resources— from books and magazines to Facebook and parent groups—to turn to when seeking advice on how to raise the smartest, highest-achieving, and most successful children. We all want what’s best for our kids, after all. But James Breakwell, professional comedy writer and self-proclaimed amateur father of four girls (and two pigs), suggests it’s simply a waste of time. “In the long run, we all work out to be average,” he says. “Your child would be better off if you just relax and do a little less for them, rather than stress yourself out and push them as hard as possible.” Say no to (parental) peer pressure When the mother of a boy in your son’s Boy Scout troop makes comments about the Kit-Kat you put in his lunch or your daughter’s field hockey coach asks why she’s not on a travel team yet (in fourth grade), it can be difficult to stick to your own parenting ways. But if every parent thinks they’re right about how to parent and you’re wrong, then everyone is wrong, according to Breakwell. “If someone tells you you’re a terrible parent, who cares,” he says. “They can’t stop you from giving your kid that
candy bar. We’ve been raising kids for hundreds of thousands of years before Facebook and online forums. Don’t let parent-shaming control your decisions.” Show up sometimes, but not all the time “Raise your kid to think they’re a member of the family, not the entire family,” Breakwell suggests. By dropping everything, leaving work, and traveling far and wide to go to every single one of your son’s lacrosse games, you’re teaching him that he’s the epicenter of the universe and he should only do things in search of your validation, not because he loves them. Instead, Breakwell suggests showing up when you can, and when you do, take him out for dinner after the game. “After all, your kids aren’t going to remember the games you weren’t at, but they will remember the one time you took them for pizza after,” he says. Speaking of sports, are you spending all of your time and money to fly around the country, pay tournament fees, and book hotels so your child can potentially get a scholarship to college and you can save money? Breakwell compares that to spending $1,000 at a claw machine for a $5 stuffed animal. “Why not take all of that

raising kids money you’re wasting and save it for college?” Breakwell suggests. Plus, it’s likely your kid won’t become a professional sports player. Convince your children they had a great childhood When parents post pictures on Facebook, Breakwell says they’re lying to their friends. “You post your best picture, I post my best picture, and we create an echo chamber of lying where everyone thinks the other is telling the truth,” Breakwell says. “Use this to your advantage.” Due to the strange phenomenon known as childhood amnesia, kids can only remember events that occurred before age 3 when they’re little, according to Popular Science. By the time they’re 7, these early memories are almost entirely gone and what they “remember” is a product of what you tell them and the photos they see. “If they don’t remember anyway, why are we stressing out?!” Breakwell asks. “Save the pictures that frame you in a good light and tell your kid she had a happy childhood, and, when she grows up, she won’t blame you for all of her problems.” Stop worrying about preschool (and middle school, high school, college…) “Overachieving parents say that all they care about is their child getting a good education and that education is all that matters. Honestly, I don’t think education matters all that much as long as your kid somehow gets one somewhere,” Breakwell says. “Nobody has secret math. Math at one school will be the same as it is at another school even if the other school has a swimming pool and a polo field.” If a parent is saying she wants her son to go to the best school, does this mean the school that will make him the happiest and feel the most fulfilled, or is it the one that will ensure he makes the most money? Instead of focusing on getting your kid into the school with the ‘best reputation,’ focus on helping your child make the most of his education.

Gently shove your child out the door The first benchmark of successful parenting is if you raised your child to ultimately support themselves, according to Breakwell. Now, no one is suggesting your 7-year-old live off of lemonade stand money. However, when the time is right, if your child doesn’t get a job, he will certainly never leave. While every parent ideally wants to encourage his child to follow her dreams of becoming a freelance traveling poet, money does ultimately matter. If she’s not making any, it’s coming from you. While you don’t have to explicitly discourage your child from choosing a “fun but impoverishing career,” it can’t hurt to not encourage her to choose a career that will lead to her living in your basement. Summer Camp in Staten Island
Where summer memories are made to last .
S
ummer memories are made at summer camp – everyone knows that! The best camps offer kids the opportunity to make lifelong friendships and experiences they will cherish for years to come. So how do you know which one is best for your family?
When Elizabeth Diorio, of Richmond Town, chose to send her kids to summer camp, she needed something with extended hours and transportation that would fit her busy work schedule while keeping her kids entertained for a full day. She decided on Richmond County Day Camp, an iconic, 23-year-old summer camp located on the expansive grounds of Mount Loretto. “They come home from camp totally wiped out,” she explained of her son, Josh, and daughter, Ashley. “They play soccer, basketball, volleyball, tons of different sports. They are busy all day, every day. Plus every week there is a pool day, which was always my kids’ favorite day of the week.” The camp offers free door-to-door transportation, which is a major requirement for parents who work. “They offer really early pickup and drop off, and great bus
service, and since I work in the city that helps me out a lot.” Ms. Diorio said. A big draw for any summer camp is always great trips. When searching for the right camp, parents often look for one which offers a wide variety of off-site excursions. In Staten Island, many camps offer local outings to the movies, the bowling alley, the roller skating rink, batting cages, mini golf, and more. Off-island excursions are a plus too. “Their favorites were iPlay America, Medieval Times, and definitely when they went to a Yankee game,” Ms. Diorio said of Richmond County Day Camp’s daily outings. “The trips were great -- there were so many! – and my kids loved going, but honestly they had fun all day long. On trips or not. There’s so much to do and they were never bored. Regular days included arts and
crafts, relay races, sports, fishing, hiking, dancing, even martial arts, and a ton of other stuff. They never wanted summer to end,” she added. For Great Kills mom of three Susan Thomas-Chiorazzi, finding the right camp was all about a warm atmosphere. Her now-grown children, Erica, Jessica, and Joseph, attended the JCC of Staten Island Day Camp, an American Camping Association accredited summer program located on Manor Road. All three of her children attended the JCC camp throughout most of their childhoods, her youngest having stayed on as a camp counselor until halfway through college. “We’re a family,” she stated. “Every camp has activities, and theirs are amazing, but it’s not even just that. Their concern for the kids is wonderful. My kids were supported by a staff that would do anything for them. It’s not just a camp -- it’s beyond amazing; it’s truly family.” Although it’s “not just about the trips,” she added that her kids thoroughly enjoyed the off-site jaunts. She said they would come off the bus “laughing, tan and dirty” enough to know they had a blast. Indeed, those are the top three signs of a good time in the summer! Camp isn’t an affordable choice for every family, so some parents look for programs that offer financial assitance or shortened schedules. Mant camps in Staten Island ofter flexibility for selecting full day/half day schedules, three, four, or five-day weeks, and week selection throughout the summer. When Mrs. Thomas-Chiorazzi enrolled her first child at the JCC Summer Camp, she was a single mom and the financial aid offered by the camp helped her cover the cost of registration. She said she only needed the aid that summer, but has since donated annually to their programs to help keep the financial assistance available to others who need it.

hen grieving the loss of a loved one, or even a pet, it can be overwhelming for parents to cope with their own grief while also helping children cope with theirs.
Edy Nathan, an experienced grief therapist and the author of It’s Grief: The Dance of Self-Discovery Through Trauma and Loss, offers the following tips for children navigating the complex world of grief.
5 “Do’s” for Helping Grieving Children Cope: Permission to Grieve: Allow the child to show that they are in an active state of mourning, and give them permission to do it in their own way. Curiosity and Care: Be curious about what the child is experiencing. Ask lots of questions, yet with care. The questions are unobtrusive and paced. Once the question has been posed, patiently wait for a response. Allow the child to process in their own time. Questions and Honest Answers: When kids lose a parent, sibling or anyone who has been dear to them, they will start to ask questions about death. Answer them as honestly as you are able. Find a way to be honest and yet respond appropriately for their age. Separation of Grief: If the family is suffering from the loss of a loved one, often
the children experience the loss of the loved one and the loss of the grieving parent(s). Though it is difficult to put the emotions of grief aside, remember that children are vulnerable, taking cues from the way in which the caregiver copes with the loss. The Gift of Grief: In every loss there is a birth. In the moment of the active state of mourning it is very difficult to imagine that there could be something empowering about the loss. Often, children become more inventive, or better at sports or more insightful when they have lost a loved one or a pet. 5 “Don’ts” for Helping Grieving Children Cope: Time for Mourning: Since grief is individual to everyone, know that children will not grieve the way the parents grieve. If you see them playing, don’t stop them, as they may be working out some of their grief in their language or comfort zone. The Truth, Please: Saying “Daddy is in a very restful sleep” or “You will see your dog in your dreams” implants a false belief that can cause undue stress and fear

raising kids for your child. No matter how old your child is, using metaphors for death that liken it to sleep often creates a fear of sleep. This can lead to anxiety and depression for children. Children Need to be Children: It is often a knee-jerk reaction to the loss of a parent to adultify the children in the house. Expecting them to take on adult responsibilities creates a role for the child that they need not have. Let them be children and give them age-appropriate responsibilities, although not given as a response to the loss. Hide and Seek The Game of Grief: The phases of mourning come to you, rather than you seeking them out. When in the state of grief, children can have outrageous responses to simple situations and stimuli. Put punishments aside for now, and allow for backward movement if it occurs. If you normalize the reactions, the child will re-enter their appropriate developmental phase. Go for a Group: Children often cope with their losses when they are exposed to other kids who have had a similar loss. Local houses of worship, YMCA’s, and even family clinics often offer grief support groups for kids of all ages. See below for some wonderful groups in Staten Island. The proud worker-owners of Love and Learn Childcare.

“But what if WE ALL owned it?” Two years ago, a group of professional nannies on Staten Island came together to ask themselves this question of a childcare business they were thinking of starting. Their goal was to provide quality childcare to their community while also empowering their employees. The women believed uniting in an entrepreneurial mission would serve their community by providing childcare and jobs simultaneously. In a short time, Love and Learn Childcare formed as Staten Island’s first worker-owned cooperative. The members in a worker-owned cooperative all have a voice in the workplace, each participating in the profits, oversight, and often management of the organization. Each worker-owner plays an equally important role in the cooperative’s mission, as well as in the home of the family they serve and children they care for. When Love and Learn Childcare Cooperative in Staten Island launched in June 2017, it led the arrival of worker-owned cooperatives in the borough. The members of Love and Learn Childcare Cooperative, like many workers organizing cooperative businesses, faced challenges. What set them apart was their
continued commitment to learning the ins and outs of cooperative business models and their intensive training in preparation for Love and Learn’s official launch. Each member is certified through the We Rise Nanny Training program through Cornell University, having completed courses in: CPR/first aid, child nutrition, socio-emotional development, home as the workplace, communication with parents, workers’ rights and pediatrics. Love and Learn Childcare cooperative is a unique economic and business opportunity for the immigrant community to explore entrepreneurship as well, providing opportunities to immigrant women to recognize their valuable contribution, market their skills and improve their quality of life. Love and Learn hopes to strengthen ties with Staten Island families and open its doors to the community by providing child care services with trained personnel. “Some of the benefits of being a worker-owner is that I manage my own schedule and do a job well done since I am the owner of my own business,” said Maria, a member of Love and Learn Childcare Cooperative. “I want to assure parents that their children will be in great hands,” she continued. “I am trained and prepared to be your child’s best friend–your most precious treasures! Parents can go to work and their occupations confident that their children are in good hands-playing and learning. Whether it be Spanish or a new craft, with me, they will not be bored! I love to work with children, as I see them as my own. I love to play with them. In whatever it may be, I like to give my best in everything.” Another member added: “My name is Aurora and I am part of the Love and Learn cooperative dedicated to childcare. My experience as a member of a cooperative is wonderful because I do what I like, and that is to work professionally with children. I am always learning something new with all the trainings offered and at the same time we help our community by generating decent work opportunities and economic democracy. ”

Dr. Frederick Hecht, MAGD
Dedicating over 4,513 hours in continuing education during his career, Dr. Frederick Hecht has become a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)! What does that mean for you and your family? Less than 2 percent of general dentists in the U.S. and Canada are AGD Masters. When you see a dentist with MAGD after their name, you can rest assured that they care about knowing the latest techniques and best practices in dentistry. AGD Masters practice these techniques in a classroom setting multiple times a year — not every dentist does this. You will be in good hands at Staten Island Dental Care! Dr. Frederick Hecht and team have created an inviting atmosphere with comfortable, state-of-the-art treatment rooms featuring natural light, as well as a philosophy of care that promotes teamwork between the patient and dentist and comprehensive dentistry to address total oral health. At Staten Island Dental Care, you’ll experience excellent clinical treatments and personalized attention. Here are testimonials of happy customers. Every one of our patients is different. That’s why Dr. Hecht and our experienced dental care team offer various sedation dentistry options to manage your comfort. • Laughing Gas can relax a patient during dental procedures. The patient will be awake and responsive to the dentist. The gas is delivered through a facemask.
• Oral Conscious Sedation is a good option for patients who experience intense dental anxiety or for those who need complex work done. With oral conscious sedation, the patient takes an anxiety-reducing drug prior to dental work, and sedation dentist Dr. Hecht also administers laughing gas. The patient will be completely relaxed, but not “out,” during the visit. Learn more about oral sedation in our patient library. • IV Sedation is delivery of intravenous medication during a procedure. Patients will be comfortably sedated during the visit. “I went to Dr. Hecht and the office and staff were amazing. They were extremely welcoming and reassuring. Dr. Hecht and Angie made me very comfortable. All in all my experience was wonderful and I would highly recommend them. If you have a fear of the dentist they will change that!!!” – Vincent B. Prescription for Parents: Finding a Pediatrician Can be a Simple Diagnosis
P
arents worry about their kids’ health and well-being from the day they enter the delivery room until the day they leave for their college dorm room -- and beyond. So, it’s no wonder they put so much care, concern, and preparation into choosing the right pediatrician. Staten Island folks said they began researching, interviewing, and getting recommendations for doctors while they were still expecting -- and suggest fellow parents do everything from arranging office visits to asking for referrals from family and friends. Those steps become even more important for new parents, like Alexandra and Gerard Tingos, who need a little extra attention, guidance, and hand-holding. “We knew being first time parents
“When we picked our pediatrician I was still living in Brooklyn and the Staten Island Parent magazine was in print in the waiting room of my OBGYN. I read them every visit and learned a lot of great tips and information from the magazine.” –Nicole Panepinto
that if we had any questions we would be able to call and ask,” about everything from illnesses to required shots, Mrs. Tingos said. She and her husband began searching for a pediatrician when she was seven months pregnant -- and made the selection about a month ahead of the early 2019 arrival their newborn daughter, Sophia. “We wanted to feel reassured knowing our questions would be answered and our child was a priority,” she added. The Tingos relied on recommendations from their obstetricians’ office and other parents in their social circle, and made sure the practice accepted their medical insurance. Meanwhile, location, office hours, and appointment availability topped the list of important criteria for many Staten Island parents who juggle busy lifestyles, which includes caring for multiple children. Although she used the same pediatric practice for her first three children, Kaitlynn Murante of New Brighton decided it was time for a change about three years ago because she was unhappy with the patient care her children had been receiving. “We were noticing less office hours and it was hard to get to see her,” Mrs. Murante, mom to Andrew, 15; daughters, Madison, 7 and Mia, 4; and newborn Michael, said. “We relied a lot on what other parents had to say and are very happy with our decision,” Mrs. Murante said. Similarly, Nicole Panepinto of Eltingville said high patient care and a

choosing a pediatrican modern office with flexible hours were among her top criteria. Like others, she asked for referrals from her obstetrician, family and friends -- and set up interviews while she was still pregnant ahead of the birth of her first child, Dominic, now 10. “I sat with the doctors prior to becoming a patient of the practice to make sure it was the correct fit for my family,” Mrs. Panepinto said. The face to face interaction with the doctors allowed her to easily make her decision and she remained content with the practice when her other children, Lucas, 8, Andrew, 6, and Olivia, 2, came along. “I knew right away the office was so understanding and really made me feel like they valued me and all my concerns,” she explained. On the other hand, the interview process also helps parents eliminate potential choices as well. “I went to an office for a pre-visit interview and knew it wasn’t a fit because the doctor lectured me for wanting to meet with them prior to becoming a patient,” she said. Ultimately, Mrs. Panepinto recommends parents choose a practice whose doctors and staff are easy to talk to, approachable, and good at listening to parents’ concerns -- especially new parents. Location is very important, according to Mrs. Murante. “Make sure you can schedule sick and well visits when it is convenient for you and your family,” Mrs. Murante said. “Over the years you will spend a lot of time at the pediatrician and you don’t want to have to drive far.” She ultimately chose a pediatrician located in close proximity to her home that had three doctors in the practice, flexible

office hours that fit her family’s schedule, and made her family a priority. While one downside can be long office waits, Mrs. Panepinto said that doesn’t have to be a deal breaker. “I have learned when to try and not make appointments to avoid longer wait times,” she advised. Flexible hours, as well as an office with up to date medical technology were also important concerns, according to Mrs. Panepinto.
“I wanted an office that gave the patient individual care -- not just text book” diagnoses, she explained, adding parents should be able to put their full trust in their doctor. “We have dealt with various issues and the doctors never have let me down,” Mrs. Panepinto said. “They always put my children first and put quality care as their goal.” Overall, local parents advise fellow moms and dads to be open and honest about what level of care they want and expect -- and not to settle for less. “As a new mother, it was extremely important to feel comfortable with the pediatrician,” Mrs. Tingos said.“I wanted to make sure that when I called to ask certain questions, or possibly need a quick appointment, we were a concern and taken care of.” She said parents -- especially new parents -- should never feel awkward about asking questions. “You always want to feel comfortable and want to feel that your child or children feel comfortable,” Mrs. Tingos added. Mrs. Panepinto agreed that parents should always voice their opinions, and not be afraid to call the office -- no matter the time. Parents also need to recognize when to make changes, according to Mrs. Murante. “If you realize the level of care that you demand isn’t there, then find a new doctor,” she recommended. “It is important to have a pediatrician that will treat your children as if they are their own.” By Christine Albano

he Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame had a busy spring, inducting eight new members on April 13. But it’s what the organization did a month earlier that caught my eye. The Hall held its Unsung Heroes Awards Ceremony on March 13 at LiGreci’s Staaten in West Brighton, giving well-deserved recognition to six individuals and one group that have helped make Staten Island a better place. “We were looking for a way to make some money to support the Hall of Fame,” Unsung Heroes Awards Committee Chairman Larry Ambrosino said candidly. “So we came up with this. The great thing is, it gives us a chance to say thank you to a group of people who truly deserve it.” Honoree Don Walters has spent his life as one of the borough’s staunchest ambassadors to the sport of bowling. While he excelled at the game in his younger days, his biggest contribution has been banging the drum for the sport for much of his life and running the Staten Island Singles Classic for four decades. “It’s an honor to be singled out by the Staten Island Hall of Fame as an unsung hero,” said Walters, who ironically missed the opening day of his tournament to receive his award. Walters, also a founding member of the Staten Island Bowling Hall of Fame, had more than two tables of supporters rooting him on when he accepted his plaque from Ambrosino, who just a month before finished up 17 weeks of cancer treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering but still turned out for the event.
The other honorees included local businessman John Venturella Jr., a strong supporter of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame Golf Outing and Reunion, as well as the New York’s Finest football team, which has generated $1 million for charities including the Make-a-Wish Foundation and the PBA Widows and Orphans Fund, and Michael Schnall, whose work as chief of staff to the borough parks commissioner has benefitted the sports community on several fronts. But not all of the honorees made their contributions through sports. George Callas and Fred Schweizer were honored for their longtime service to the Boy Scouts, while Donna Pagano was cited for the contributions she has made to several museum projects, including the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame. The large turnout helped fund the work of the Hall of Fame, which invites everyone to its induction ceremony at the CYO MIV Community Center at Mount Loretto — where the Hall is located — each year free of charge. This year’s honorees were John Drebinger, a legendary sportswriter for The New York Times who starred in track and field at Curtis HS in his youth; Tottenville HS softball coach Cathy Morano; acclaimed Staten Island basketball coach Howie Ruppert; football standout Bobby Rodriguez; Dr. Mark Sherman, one of the founders of the Unity Games; the founders of the Staten Island Little League; longtime McKee HS baseball and basketball coach Bob Steele; and local golf great Steve Zuntag.

Make Your Bash a Smash! Tips for Party Planning Like a Pro
Sometimes I feel like I’m the last person on earth who is terrible at planning parties. I get overwhelmed, I overspend, and I’m over all of it before it even starts. Here in Staten Island, it feels like everyone is a party planning pro. Each event I attend seems more elaborate than the last. Often I can’t tell whether I’m at a baby’s first birthday or a wedding! Why am I the only one who can barely manage to throw together a basic gathering? Wanting my next event to finally be a hit, I decided to turn to the pros: my fellow Staten Islanders (and a few from Brooklyn as well, or as I like to call them, “pre-Staten Islanders”). I asked for their best party planning tips – time-saving, money-saving, or just some ideas for having the coolest party ever. And of course, they delivered! Here’s what I learned.
Order everything online
The one word I heard most frequently in my research was “Amazon.” Ordering stuff online is cheaper, allows you to compare prices, saves you a trip to the store, and also allows for more options. Other websites thrown around were Etsy, Michael’s, and, of course, Pinterest, which we will get to next.

Make Pinterest your personal party planner
I’m a huge fan of Pinterest. I’ve got wall to wall boards packed with projects for me to screw up. But if you stick to your own skill level, you will find literally hundreds of party ideas on Pinterest. Use it for themes, invitations, favors, decorations, games, entertainment, the latest party trends, and more.
Go DIY where you can
DIY touches can add a personalized touch you often can’t buy at the store, and they can save you a ton too. Anne, who recently planned her twin boys’ birthday shindig, offered up this super useful advice: “One thing I started doing is making my own invitations on my phone or computer, then instead of ordering an invitation or printing them out -- and having to replace ink cartridges -- I just print as a 4x6 through the Shutterfly app. It’s free and you just pay for shipping.”

LIPM Explore different party times
Not every party has to be a weekend soiree. Andrea, whose son is recently started junior high, had this tip: “My son is getting a little old for parties but the last couple of years I booked a party on a weekday. It was cheaper, and because the kids are older they can come after school and stay later too.”

The dollar store is your friend
This is one tip I hear over and over. You can get some useful stuff for – shocking, I know – only a buck. Favors, decorations, plus serving trays and utensils, candy, food, and more. Those fancy candy tables you see at communions, christenings, birthdays, showers all have one thing in common – at least some of it was purchased at Dollar Tree.
Make lists
This seems like a fairly obvious way to stay organized, but not everyone thinks to jot everything down and stick to a list. Lists can save you when you are feeling overwhelmed. Make a list of things to do in the order they can be done. Make a separate list of things to buy, which can also help you stick to your budget. Make a guest list and make a note of anyone who can be enlisted for help. Store the lists in your phone so they’ll be handy at all times.

There’s an app for that
Apps are a lifesaver, and we are fortunate to live in a time when we’re just a few clicks away from endless help– including party planning. Here are some cool apps I came across in my search for digital help: Wunderlist and Evernote are list apps that will help you stay on top of your tasks. Guest List Organizer will use the contacts stored in your phone to help you create your guest list and keep track of RSVP’s. ArrangeMySeat takes care of the seating arrangements for an event. BigNight helps you create shopping lists and plan menus. Pro Party Planner is an all-in-one app that will keep you organized and even on budget. Search the app store for the ones that will work best for you.

arents: Teacher Appreciation Week runs from May 5 through May 11. It has been designated by the National PTA as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to educating children. Teacher Appreciation Week is a great time as the school year is ending to let your children’s teachers know how much you appreciate what they have done for your children this year. After all, everyone likes to know that their work is appreciated. A note or email is an excellent way to do this. Be creative and think beyond the academic progress your children have made. You might mention such things as how the teacher has helped your child to become more organized and to find a fascination with a subject such as history or science. And don’t forget to mention how much your children have enjoyed having this teacher. It is also a nice gesture to drop a note to the administration at the school outlining the positive experiences that a teacher has given your children. Consider also extending your appreciation of a teacher to your Facebook and other social media pages. And if a teach-
er has been especially helpful to your children, consider presenting him or her with a small gift. If your children have especially enjoyed this school year, have them also share their appreciation of a teacher by writing a note or an email or mentioning this in the online media. Question: How do parents help their children develop good speech skills? My son is not nearly as skilled a talker as many of the children in his preschool. –Speechless Answer: Every child has his or her individual rate of development for skills, including speech. There is cause for concern when a child lags significantly behind his peers. It would be wise to discuss your child’s speech with his preschool teacher to see if the teacher believes as you do that his speech is behind that of his classmates. Help may be at hand for your son through the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities. It offers speech-language therapy for children ages 3 through 5. To get this

LIPM help, you must go through the school district office in the area where you live and ask that your child be evaluated. After the evaluation, you will go to an Admission, Review and Dismissal meeting to determine if your child is eligible for this therapy. If he is, services will be provided at a local public school campus or possibly at a child development center, Head Start or a private preschool. If he is not eligible for services to improve his speech, you may wish to have him work with a private speech-language pathologist. Besides having a professional work with your child, there are things that you can do to improve his communication skills: • When your child speaks, respond to him so he knows that you are listening to what he says. • Make it a practice to read to your child every day. • If he is frequently asking you to speak louder or you have to repeat what you say a lot, he may need his hearing tested. • Avoid asking your child to slow down or repeat what he has said. • Get help for your child now so he has good speech language skills before entering kindergarten. Parents: There is a lot of jargon in reading. Much of it is used to describe the basic skills that children need. This month, we will explain some of the commonly used terms and give some ideas about how parents can work with their children on these skills. • Summarize: To recap or retell only the important information in a story or text. Have your children read a short passage and then longer ones and tell you their main idea or ideas. • Prediction: To use material from a text and personal experiences to anticipate what will follow in what is being read. Read with your children, stopping frequently to ask what is likely to happen next. • Inference: To use clues in a story and personal experiences to figure out what is not being said. For example, read a title to your children such as “A Snowy Day” and ask: What season do you think it will be in this story? • Comprehension: To read text, process it and understand its meaning. Read aloud with your children, then stop frequently and ask about what has happened. • Decoding: to translate print into speech by matching a letter or letters to their sounds and recognizing patterns that make up syllables and words. Parents can improve their children’s decoding skills so they can recognize unknown words by teaching them to look at their beginning and ending sounds and to search for clues from what they are reading. Read with your children and help them learn and use decoding strategies.
