Nominate your favorite teacher for a Big Apple Award by November 26! Photo credit: morningbellnyc.com

The Big Apple Awards Think your child’s teacher is the cream of the crop? Nominate ‘em for a Big Apple Award! Now in its seventh year, the Big Apple Awards are granted annually to New York City’s most outstanding teachers. Since 2013, 88 teachers have been recipients of the prestigious award. Nominating a teacher for this award is a wonderful way to show your gratitude for the impact they have made in your child’s life. Last year, over 6,500 teachers were nominated from over 1,300 schools across the city. To qualify, nominees must be current, full-time public school teachers in City district schools, charter programs, or early childhood education centers who inspire their students, exemplify great teaching, and improve their school communities. Nominations are accepted anonymously, and your nominee will not be given your name without your permission. To nominate a teacher, you will need to provide the teacher’s name and subject, the school name and borough, the teacher’s email address, and the school principal’s name. You will also need to provide a brief statement on why your nominee should be considered for the award. Once this year’s Big Apple Award recipients are selected and identified in spring 2019, they will each be given the opportunity to participate in the Big Apple Fellowship and represent teachers citywide during monthly meetings as members of the Chancellor’s Teacher Advisory Group during the 2019–20 school year. You only have until November 26 to nominate your favorite teacher, so don’t miss out. To learn more about the award, visit the DOE website or link directly at siparent.com, where you can also link to a nomination form. Good luck to all of Staten Island’s wonderful teachers!

Reality Check youth are standing up to Big Tobacco, working tirelessly to build a tobacco-free generation

Seen Enough Tobacco Day Did you know the average age of a new smoker in New York is just 13 years old? There is overwhelming evidence to indicate the more young people see tobacco marketing, the more likely they are to start smoking (per a report from the U.S. Surgeon General). According to seenenoughtobacco.org, young people are almost twice as likely as adults to recall tobacco advertising, and it makes them more likely to smoke. That’s why Reality Check of Tobacco-Free Staten Island recently spent an afternoon at Wolfe’s Pond Park, where they hosted a chalk the walk and cigarette butt cleanup for their second Annual Seen Enough Tobacco Day. Seen Enough Tobacco Day aims to demonstrate the scary impacts of tobacco marketing on youth in the community. The group’s goal was to protect themselves and other children from the billions of dollars tobacco companies spend advertising in places that can be seen by young people and to help put an end to youth smoking and tobacco use. Wolfe’s Pond was chosen for its location near one of the largest high schools on Staten Island. Kids spent the afternoon clearing the butts and placing flags where tobacco litter once was across the beach, and chalk messaging on the paths leading up to the beach. Go to siparent.com to link to more information.

Free Skiing & Snowboarding for Kids Thinking of a snowy getaway this winter? The Pennsylvania Ski

Families do not have to be from PA to participate. Snowpasses are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis, so PSAA encourages families to fill out their applications online now. There is a nominal online processing fee of $35 before Dec. 1 and $40 after. Link to the application at siparent.com and go to siparent. com/skiing for a list of resorts where the Snowpass can be used, as well as helpful first-time ski tips for kids.

Support small businesses in your neighborhood on Saturday, November 24!

Small Business Saturday Show some love to your neighborhood businesses by shopping small! Small Business Saturday is a day when people across the country are encouraged to shop and support small, local businesses. Small Business Saturday was deemed a national shopping holiday in 2011 and is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during the busiest holiday shopping weekend of the year. This year, it will be held on Saturday, November 24. The Chamber of Commerce has signed up to be this year’s Staten Island Small Business Saturday Neighborhood Champion. If you own a small business, you can sign up at shopsmall. com and contact the Chamber to help you promote it. Be sure to post your pics and purchases using the hashtag #ShopSmallStatenIsland!

Geoffrey’s Comeback Are you still a Toys “R” Us kid? If so, we have some good news. The company posted the following tweet last month “Guess who’s back? He’s been traveling across the globe for the past few months but now #GeoffreysBack and once again ready to set play free for children of all ages. Share some of your favorite memories and get ready to make a whole lot of new ones!” The tweet linked to a press release indicating that its current investors would be holding onto all trademarks associated with the company, including Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us, Geoffrey, toysrus.com, and over 20 well-known toy and baby brands like Imaginarium, Koala Baby and Journey Girl. Many are rejoicing over the news of a possible comeback after the company’s early 2018 bankruptcy left a gaping hole in the toy industry. However, thousands of former employees who are still awaiting severance pay were not happy to hear the news. What comes next is still unclear; but with the holiday season upon us, anything is possible.

Staten Island Student Wins Golden Ticket Penguin Young Readers has chosen five children from across the United States to become the new golden ticket winners in their Roald Dahl’s Imaginormous Challenge -- which tasks participants to come up with an imaginative 100-word story idea -- and one of the winners is from right here in Staten Island. Tara Isabel Dee Lago, a student at St. Joseph Hill Academy, is this year’s Theatrical Creation winner. Tara is meeting with the company from the new musical Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Cincinnati in order to transform her story idea into a theatrical creation with the help of the cast and choreography team. “A pleasant surprise of epic proportions cannot even begin to describe the euphoria I felt when I learned that I was going to meet with the company from Roald Dahl’s play ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Tara said. “It was like a bridge from my dreams to reality has been formed… And I cannot wait to cross it!” Since its inception last year, Roald Dahl’s Imaginormous Challenge has received over 50,000 story ideas from kids aged 5-12 throughout the U.S. The Challenge will be returning in 2019.

Shore to Shore Upgrades for Staten Island Schools

Exciting News for Harry Potter Fans

Council Member Joseph C. Borelli announced recently that he’s allocated $550,000 in funding for South Shore Staten Island elementary schools in the Fiscal Year 2019. The funds will go toward a number of new initiatives and upgrades for a majority of the elementary schools in the Council Member’s district. The enhancements will include major technology upgrades, including smart boards and laptops at thirteen local schools; P.S. 4, 6, 8, 37, 42, 53, 55, 58, and 62, and I.S. 24, 34, and 72. “We have the highest performing public schools in New York City right here on the south shore of Staten Island and it’s my privilege to augment the hard work of principals, parents, and PTAs by providing them with the resources they need to maintain their edge and continue producing outstanding students,” said Borelli. Councilwoman Debi Rose also announced the allocation of $1.6 million for North Shore schools at the start of school year, which are being used for technology and infrastructure improvements. The Fiscal Year 2019 allocations include an auditorium upgrade at PS57, library upgrades to PS 861 and technology upgrades to 14 schools across the North Shore. “Our world is changing rapidly, making it even more important to ensure that schools across the North Shore remain competitive,” added Councilwoman Rose, who spent more than two decades as executive director of Liberty Partnerships Program, which works to keep at-risk youth in school. “I know firsthand how technology, the arts and even a new playground or ballfield contribute to the learning experiences of our children, and so I was proud to allocate a significant portion of my capital funds to our local schools, as I do every year since I have been in office.”

Grab your brooms and zoom into Manhattan! Harry Potter: A History of Magic, the British Library’s most successful exhibition, can now be viewed at the New-York Historical Society. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the U.S. publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the New York exhibition explores the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter stories and showcases a new selection of objects that are on view to the public for the very first time. Harry Potter: A History of Magic features centuries-old treasures, including rare books, manuscripts, and magical objects from the collections of the British Library, the New-York Historical Society, and other museums, as well as original material from publisher Scholastic and J.K. Rowling’s own archives. The exhibit is organized around the highly familiar subjects studied at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, including: Potions and Alchemy, Herbology, Divination, Charms, Astronomy, Defense Against the Dark Arts and Care of Magical Creatures. The New York Historical Society is located at 170 Central Park West in Manhattan. Go to siparent.com to learn more about this magical exhibit.

Welcome to our newest islander Congratulations to Jill and Chris Bergstrom on the birth of their fourth child, Matthew Domenick Bergstrom. Matthew was born on October 12, 2018 at 12:15am and weighs 7 pounds, 9 ounces and is 20.5 inches long. Siblings Samantha, Michael and Elizabeth are proud to have a new baby brother, especially Michael. To submit your child’s birth announcement please visit siparent.com/birth-announcements.

Parent Teacher Conferences It may not seem like it, but we are over two months into the school year already — which means it’s time for Parent Teacher Conferences! So take time to prepare. Talk first with your child to get a heads-up on any potential problem they might be having in the classroom and ask if there are any missing homework assignments or any upcoming projects they should be working on. Take note of how long it takes your child to complete their homework. Do they need a lot of help with their work? If your child is struggling, consider their seat assignment in the classroom. Are they distracted by certain other students, traffic near their desk, proximity to windows, or use of technology? Now is the time to ask for a change or for advice on how to help them succeed this school year.

‘Sharental’ Advisory Posting about your little one’s life on social media is big-time fun—but is it smart? And safe?

I

In parenthood, there are moments of mayhem we don’t want anyone else to see and moments we want to highlight on Instagram—and, if we’re being honest, moments of mayhem that are totally worthy of a post on Instagram. If this is something you know all too well, welcome to ‘sharenthood.’

n parenthood, there are moments of mayhem we don’t want anyone else to see and moments we want to highlight on Instagram—and, if we’re being honest, moments of mayhem that are totally worthy of a post on Instagram. If this is something you know all too well, welcome to ‘sharenthood.’ It is no secret that as we scroll through our various social media feeds, most (if not all) of what we see is staged. Everyone has a different motive for posting their children on social media, and some choose to keep their babies off Facebook and Instagram completely. The 38,000-follower Instagram account @ thispugslife, winner of The Ellen DeGeneres Show’s Ellen Rate My Baby, began as an account showcasing Charlie, a black pug. Account creator Meredith Kreuger’s daughter was added to the mix when she was born. “Followers tell me all the time that the two of them make them smile and make them happy,” Kreuger says. “My goal is to make people laugh via Instagram and blogging. I love captioning photos and I love to write!” There are parents who post pictures to keep their families in the loop, some who use Instagram as a scrapbook of sorts, others who are aiming to send a greater message, and in some cases, to receive a sense of validation. This all leads us to the question: to post or not to post?

Why Sharent? Mac & Mia, an online children’s clothing service, surveyed 2,000 new parents about how they felt when it came to posting their babies on social media. The survey concluded there are two types of parents: those who claim they use social media to keep friends and family involved and develop content for future scrapbooking projects (87 percent) and those who have no shame in saying ‘it just feels good to show off my kid’ (13 percent). Although parents link their posting motives to being about their kids, it turns out it’s more about appeasing themselves, according to Ida Jeltova, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist in Rockland and Bergen counties with more than 14 years of clinical experience working with children, youths, and families. “Social media provides a perception, if not actual validation, of ‘my child is liked and doing well. I am a good parent’,” she says. There is a small population of parents who are competitive due to insecurity, Dr. Jeltova adds, which forces the child to develop an extension of parental ego and self-esteem. “The parent needs the child to be liked to feel likeable themselves,” she says. At the end of the day, every parent is different, and there’s nothing wrong with feeling validated,

raising kids whether you’re helping others by sending a message or it gives you an extra boost—as long as it’s in good spirit. Sending a Message A national survey conducted by Edison Research, as a part of Minute Maid’s this is GOOD campaign, revealed that 94 percent of sharents stage their social media posts. Although this might seem shocking, it is important to remember that social media is meant for an audience and the photos are staged to project a motive, whether it’s clear or ambiguous. For example, the Instagram account @papaanddaddy, which has 44,600 followers, is clear in its message and role in the social media world: to normalize same-sex parenting. “There’s a lot of work left to be done in normalizing same-sex parenting. This is our small way of paying it forward,” says James Loduca, one of the dads behind the account.

But Be Conscious of Cyber Bullying Christine Di’Amore, a Youtuber with nearly 300,000 subscribers, is best known for her videos about makeup and lifestyle. Despite her Internet presence, she has chosen to keep her daughter out of the public eye for now. “While hateful comments don’t hurt me, a lot of people who aren’t conditioned to the harsh world that social media can be (like my daughter) might be more affected by those words, regardless of how ridiculous or untrue they are,” Di’Amore says. “If my daughter does come across any negative comments, she knows I will have a conversation with her and try to help her understand the psyche behind those who bully others, and the reason they want to bring others down to their level.” As children grow older and have more access to the Internet they will realize cyber bullies are everywhere. While their hurtful comments can be ignored, they might be hard to brush off. On the flip side, being exposed to cyber bullying at a young age can help children understand how to deal with it as they enter their teenage years. “Another reason for not sharing that I often hear is a desire to protect child’s privacy. The child has the right to be growing up in a protected, emotionally safe environment,” Dr. Jeltova says. “Having his or her images posted is inviting feedback and judgment and potentially jeopardizes the privacy and emotional safety.” When you place yourself in the public eye, whether it’s to express a message to thousands of followers or you’re sharing your child’s preschool graduation, there is a safety concern and a leeway for hatred. “There are a ton of people out there that are looking to do harm in a variety of ways,” says Amaliya Makarovskaya, a Manhattan mom of two. “I find that there is very little to be gained from social media in general, especially through my kids posts.” Circling back to the Mac & Mia survey, 42 percent of parents say they have planned posts of their children in advance and have spent up to 2 hours to get the perfect shot. As with all things when it comes to parenting, it’s ultimately up to you to weigh the pros and cons of sharing snapshots of your children on social media, but think beyond safety and look into your true motive for posting a photo of your child. Remember: There is a definitive line between remembering a moment and wasting time. By Dasha Kofman

What the Fortnite?? The Slippery Slope of Digital Addiction & How Parents Are Avoiding It

When my ten-year-old son showed me his Christmas list recently, I knew it was likely to be laden with electronics of all sorts. And I was right, more or less, because it consisted solely of electronics. What I didn’t expect was just how short the list would be. It contained just two items: V-bucks (in laymen’s terms, Fortnight cash) and an X-Box One, yet another device on which he could play his favorite video game, Fortnite.

T

he Washington Post describes Fortnite as a cross between Minecraft and a shooter game, complete with 100-person, battle royal fights to the death, zombie survival modes and more. It’s definitely been my least favorite video game so far, due to its violent features and highly addictive nature. But despite the title of this article, I’m not pointing all fingers at Fortnite. Although the latest gaming sensation has captured the 24/7 focus of kids, teens, and even adults alike, it will surely be phased out soon and replaced by the Next Big Thing. Before Fortnite, it was Roblox. Before Roblox, it was Minecraft. Before Minecraft, Super Mario. At least back in the Super Mario days, my son would often pause the game to fiddle with his toy dinosaurs or build brightly colored LEGO creations. But each phase is seemingly more intense than the last, with action figures and fantasy play replaced by more and more gaming time. It’s becoming a problem. I’m not innocent, of course. I can limit device use, encourage outdoor play, or use gaming time as a reward rather than a regular activity. But I think a lot of parents are guilty of over-utilizing these convenient little electronic babysitters. As a work-at-home-mom who relishes the

rare, quiet moments where I can complete projects in peace, my kids probably spend more time staring at screens than they should. The World Health Organization recently classified digital addiction as a diagnosable disease called “gaming disorder.” Studies have shown overuse of screen time can lead to obesity, depression, sleep problems, anxiety, loss of social skills and more. In very young children it can lead to delayed language development. According to Dr. Peng Pang, Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Staten Island University Hospital, there is overwhelming evidence of similarities between internet & video game addictions (IVGA) and substance use disorder. He cited the following symptoms of gaming disorder: • preoccupation with video games, which becomes the dominant activity in daily life • withdrawal symptoms when gaming is taken away like irritability, anxiety, or sadness • loss of interest in past hobbies and entertainment • continued excessive use of games despite knowledge of a problem • lying about gaming • use of games to relieve a negative mood

raising kids “To prevent development of IVGA, children and adolescents typically need to resume healthy real-time living strategies to replace the dopamine that addiction creates and to regain typical joys and satisfactions balanced living provides, e.g. focusing on academic or work performance, sleep quantity and quality, ‘real-life’ ‘in-person’ activities and relationships,” Dr. Pang said. ~Equal Opportunity Employer~

In other words, both children and adults can become as dependent on video games as people with drug or alcohol addictions. Therefore, is critical to help kids foster those real-life experiences to replace the “high” of addiction. It’s scary to think of my ten year-old being addicted to anything, so limiting screen time altogether is the best place to start in combatting my son’s chronic gaming. I turned to parents in and around Staten Island for ideas on reducing screen time and received some excellent tips and feedback. set rules. In my own house we try to restrict screen time on school nights, limiting it to weekends only, a practice I found to be fairly common amongst parents with school-aged children. Some parents are rigid with their rules while others are lax. Mary Checo-Williams is strict with her weekend-only rule: “No video games Monday through Friday and only on the weekend, even during summer vacation.” Polina Vix allows for very little flexibility in her rules: “No screen time Monday to Thursday. No iPads, no TV, no X-Box, etc. School nights are strictly for homework, reading, writing, drawing. Friday through Sunday is a 30-minute limit for iPads per day, and TV/X-Box two to three hours depending on weather and activities for the day.” Deception can be Ok. There’s no shame in their game for parents who use a little trickery to keep their kids away from screens. Some hide remotes while others “forget” to charge controllers or insist the internet is “broken.” “Sorry, the iPad died!” Krystle Rocco tells her three-year-old daughter. “She will tell me to charge it, and I do, but then I distract her anyway.” Use timers and controls. Deception probably wouldn’t work on older kids, which is why they invented timers and parental controls. WiFi can be turned off easily with the press of a button. TVs can be set to switch off at a certain time. “The Nintendo switch app has controls where I set it to turn off after two hours.” Nicole Saldana says. “They cannot turn it back on if they tried.” Just say no. Some parents avoid rules and restrictions with a simple “no.” It’s a strict approach but if you start early, you can set a precedent like Angelina Millaj has with her twin toddlers. “My kids are only two and don’t really know how to work the TV and they don’t have a tablet, plus they aren’t allowed

raising kids to play with our phones,” she says. “I give them TV time but I don’t generally do it unless they ask and even then its one episode or two short ones. They can have a movie with the family. No set rules—it’s just something we don’t like doing too much of. They’re used to hearing no.” schedule Afterschool activities. It’s a simple philosophy. If your kids are too busy with productive activities, there will be no time for screens. Ivy Goffredo says she’s always been extremely strict with her kids’ digital use, but admits their daily extracurriculars make it a little easier. “What helps is the amount of after school activities they have. They are in extended day at school because we both work. They also have activities almost daily - dance, soccer, etc. Weekends are busy with those activities too.” Monitor for reactions. It’s important to step in if your child is becoming belligerent or having adverse reactions to gameplay. This type of behavior can be unhealthy and needs to be addressed immediately. Alison Arpaio won’t stand for it with her 11-year-old son. “If he starts getting too serious while playing or angry, I make him stop because it’s just a game and I don’t tolerate attitudes over a game.” Redirect, redirect, redirect. Having distractions available will surely keep your kids from craving screen time. If they are bored, they will turn to screens. Crystal Jorge says she plays a lot of music in her house and keeps many books on hand for her son. “I try to always have an arts-and-crafts box around with cool stickers and stuff so I can tell him to go be creative instead.” No screens outside the house. For some parents, it’s a matter of respect. For others, it’s about discipline. Either way, many parents won’t allow digital devices outside the house. Jennifer Spadafora enforces this rule when necessary. “Tablets do not come into restaurants or family gatherings but may leave the house if I have a doctor’s appointment for myself where I need them occupied.” Set an example. This might be the hardest rule for parents to follow. Many of us are just as guilty of an overabundance of screen time as our children. Setting an example is important. Putting phones away during meals and letting your kids see you reading instead of zoned out on the couch is a great place to start. “We have one TV in the whole house and it is only on twice a day: while I’m making breakfast and while I’m making dinner,” Mrs. Spadafora says. Use technology as reward. A little positive reinforcement goes a long way – a lot longer than the negative kind, at least. Instead of taking their digital devices away when they are misbehaving, try using screen time as a reward for good behavior only. Many parents will only allow screen time after homework 24 November 2018 • siparent.com

is completed and chores are done. Good grades, good behavior, and a positive attitude are all a must. Jaimee Fontaine found this to be a helpful solution to her daughter’s digital habits. “My seven-year-old was getting obsessed with her iPad, so now she has to earn her time by reading or putting away silverware, folding socks, etc. Instead of an allowance she gets time on her iPad.” Educational games only. Some parents are more opposed to the types of games being played than the gaming itself. Many won’t allow their child to play a violent game like Fortnite at all. Instead they limit device use to educational games only. Kristin Dalton says of her daughter: “We’ve had very, very few instances when we’ve had to take her iPad away. She’s only allowed to play educational games like ABC all aaccount personal Mouse, C though wen doow have F a or Spotify for her so she can use it to listen to music.”

Use your judgement. Rules and restrictions are not for everyone. If you trust your child not to overdo it, then give him the opportunity to be responsible on his own. One mom I spoke to admitted she doesn’t limit screen use at all. “He’s a really good kid,” Andrea Tancredi says of her 11-year-old son. “He is respectful, polite, kind and thoughtful. He also asks me every time If he can download something or go online to look at something. He does extremely well in school. So for all these reasons I have no limits on device time. He unwinds by playing video games mostly or watching something on his phone. I feel because he really doesn’t give me any trouble I allow him to unwind how he likes. No limits. I know most parents would jump on me saying that’s ridiculous, but it’s just a non-issue for us.” Actually, Andrea isn’t alone. I heard from several other parents with a similar outlook.

Jennifer Amato-DiStefano says: “As long as homework is done their free time is theirs to do whatever they want. Unfortunately, in this day and age kids can’t go ‘out to play’ like we used to so spending time on video games is a way for them to socialize with their school friends outside of school.” Mike Dubs agrees. “If schoolwork is done and they are doing good in school, and getting up for school in time, I’m good with giving them time to do what they want.” There’s no arguing that technology will always be a big part of our children’s lives. At least we have the power to decide to what extent. By Jeannine Cintron, a Staten Island mom of two who’s dreaming of a screen-free Christmas.

College Sports Opportunity how to find the right one

O

n my first day of college back in the dark ages — 1973 — my adviser asked me if I played a sport. I told him I had played high school baseball, and he told me I should try out for the team at my school — Long Island University in Brooklyn.

Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. Read more sports advice @ www.siparent.com/goodsports

LIU is an NCAA Division I program, the top level, and there were a number of former Staten Island high school stars there on baseball scholarships. I didn’t enroll in LIU to play sports, and I knew I wasn’t on the same talent level as the guys on the team. So I wrote about baseball for the college newspaper instead of playing it. But if it’s important to your daughter or son that they play a sport in college, they should spend some time finding the right program long before they are sitting in front of their adviser on the first day. We have had three of our children play sports in college on various levels, so the advice below is based on our experiences.

28 November 2018 • siparent.com

Participating in any activity can make the transition to college a lot easier, and being on a

sports team could be a great way to make friends and provide a productive outlet outside the classroom, especially if he or she goes away to school. If your child is an elite athlete, he or she won’t have to search out a college — the college most likely will find her or him. Most student athletes will have to seek out a college that fits their budget, where they can achieve success in the classroom and where he or she would make the college team. Does your child know her or his desired area of study? To find schools with programs that fit their interest, scouring the internet, going to college fairs and spending quality time with one’s high school’s college adviser could help nail down some good options. What price range works for your family? While getting an athletic scholarship would be great, full rides are rare. Most likely, it’s going to cost you something — probably a lot. Look up the cost of tuition for the schools on your list. Speak to the colleges’ admissions counselors to find out if your child’s SAT scores and high school grades make it possible to get some academic scholarship money.

LIPM Does your child want to go away to college or stay home? Is there a maximum distance they’d be willing to travel and that you’re comfortable with? If your child becomes homesick or, worse, faces some kind of emergency, there is nothing worse than him or her dealing with a difficulty alone while you are hundreds of miles away. A lot of information about the team your child is hoping to make can be found on the college’s website. Compare the player rosters, the won-loss records and the schedules. Playing on a winning team is nice, but being assured of playing time might mean searching out programs in need of improvement. Your child might be the second-best point guard in the conference, but if the best point guard is on his team, he probably will have to wait awhile to get significant playing time. How can you find out if the coach is interested in your child? Fill out the questionnaire most schools have on their athletics websites. Attend prospect showcases or workouts the college might offer. Drop the coach an email about any plans you have to visit the school and ask for a meeting or an opportunity to watch a practice session. You might also have your child’s current coach — travel, high school, whatever — drop a line to the college coach about your child. Even if you have to write the letter and have the coach sign it if it meets with their approval, the time could be well worth it. Make sure you include ways the college coach can contact your child’s coach or you directly. A YouTube video showing your child on the field or court can be very helpful. Many college coaches are inundated with such videos, so keeping it to five minutes or less is important. Make sure to supply the link to the video. If there is interest, the coach will contact you. Division III schools cannot offer any scholarship money and Division II schools are limited in what they can offer. Division I schools can offer the most but, again, those opportunities are reserved for elite athletes. If your child doesn’t find a four-year school that fits, there is another option: junior college. Going to a two-year school and then transferring could give your child more time to improve his academic or athletic credentials, and he or she might have a better idea of what they’d like to focus their studies on after those two years. For the rules and regulations you need to follow in pursuit of finding a college team for your child, go to www.ncaa. org/student-athletes/future/recruiting on the NCAA website. The NCAA is the governing body for most college athletic programs. Also, there are companies that can do the work for you, and many travel programs are prepared to offer advice as they have undoubtedly dealt with this for their former players. Good luck with the process.

How to Choose the

Family Cruise

for Your Crew

Find the right cruise for your family with these tips and a roundup of cruise lines departing the New York area

C

ruises are the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market— it’s estimated that more than 25 million people will set sail this year. But with so many cruise lines competing to woo families, how do you decide which one is perfect for you? To help, we have gathered tips on how to pick a cruise that fits your crew, along with a list of the best family cruise lines departing from the New York area. All aboard!

Things to Consider When Planning a Cruise What does your family need? Almost all cruises now offer some type of family programming, but the services and facilities vary between cruise lines and even individual ships. Some are better for babies and young kids, some for tweens and teens, and others are best for intergenerational parties. A ship that suits teens who want to entertain themselves may not be great for a sports-enthused tween, or a toddler obsessed

with Disney princesses. Do you want drop-off activities for the kids or to play together as a family? Scheduled or freestyle fun? Investigate what’s offered and consider what each member of the family needs. How old are your kids? Each cruise line splits its kids’ activities by different age ranges. Check that these work for your family, especially if you want siblings to play together. If you have really young kids, double-check that your chosen ship offers drop-off activities. Some will only allow potty-trained kids or children ages 3 and older in their programs. Most ships do not

allow children who are not potty trained into the water areas and pools, so if you have a toddler, check first. What size ship suits your party? Larger and newer ships are more likely to have bigger cabins and family suites, as well as exciting-sounding facilities such as bowling alleys and ice-skating rinks. They can also have a party atmosphere and crowds. Smaller ships may have fewer activities, but some families prefer the more sedate atmosphere and shorter lines. If you have teens who like to wander, you’ll want to bring cellphones to keep track of them on a larger ship.

LIPM

How many days do you want the cruise to last? Most lines offer cruises ranging from three to 14 days. Up to seven days can be a good starting point for families and cruise newbies. After all, you don’t want to book a 14-day cruise and discover you hate it on day two! Consider how many days it will take your family to relax and settle in so you can come back from your vacation well rested. What lodgings suit your needs? Each ship has a variety of accommodations, from basic cabins with dividing curtains, to suites with sea views and balconies. Some lines have better basic cabins, some better suites. If you have small kids and won’t be out every night, it’s worth making sure your cabin won’t be above a bar or nightclub. Do you want flexible or set dining times? Each cruise line has a multitude of restaurants and dining choices. Some offer flexible, casual dining where you can pick and choose from whatever cuisine you want. Others are more formal, giving you set times to dine each night. Almost all cruises will offer buffets as well as dining rooms, room service, and often at least one formal meal per trip. What type of entertainment interests you? Many cruise lines offer big-name performers and Broadway-worthy productions. Others have acrobatic shows, character meet-and-greets, or activity zones so the family can entertain themselves at a water park, ice-skating rink, or bowling alley. What atmosphere do you want? Do you prefer a traditional, more formal ship or something more casual? A themed cruise or a trip with unrelated but exciting activities? Do you want to pick activities as you go, or to be scheduled? Some ships have a party atmosphere, while others are more laid-back. Figure out the ambience you desire overall as well as in the mornings and evenings. What is your perfect itinerary? From the New York area, the Caribbean is a popular choice for families. Other destinations include city stops in New England and Canada or beach-focused trips to the Bahamas and Bermuda. Some cruise lines stop in Orlando, FL, which is perfect if you want to hit the theme parks or other nearby attractions. Just keep in mind many of the organized activities on land can be expensive, so you may want to plan ahead and book your own entertainment. Read the fine print While some cruises are truly all-inclusive, others may charge more for certain things on board, excursions, or for activities during stops on land. Know what is—and isn’t—included in your ticket price, so you don’t have any surprises when it’s time to disembark.

Family-Friendly Cruise Lines Departing the New York Area

More and more families are taking to the high seas for vacation, and New York is a popular place to set sail. Now that you have the tools to plan your cruise, evaluate each cruise line to find the best fit before looking at the specific ships’ offerings. Disney Cruise Line Disney offers some of the most popular cruises for families, particularly families with young children. With just one ship sailing from New York, the Disney Magic, you’ll have to book early. Where to? Itineraries to the Bahamas, Eastern Caribbean, Bermuda, and Canada. Bahamian cruises stop off at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. Families on this trip also get the chance to visit the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida as one of their stops. Highlights: The big draw is the opportunity to make your kid’s dreams come true as they meet their favorite characters. Options include tea with a princess, character breakfasts (select cruises of seven nights or more only), and character meet-and-greets. Other highlights include Disney movies on the big screen, dinner shows, and splashing in Goofy’s Pool. Disney cruises are famous for their Broadway-quality family entertainment and original shows. Exclusive to Disney Magic is Tangled: The Musical, the first-ever stage adaptation of the animated film. The Pirate Night deck party is also a big hit. Kids clubs: The ships have kids clubs for children ages 6 months and older, including a drop-off nursery (extra fee applies) for babies. Another bonus for families with young children: Disney is one of the only cruise lines with splash areas for kids still in diapers. Dining: Guests are given set dining times; eating at the same time each night with the same people, but rotating through different restaurants. There are also casual options, buffets, in-room, and, of course, character dining. Best for: Families with children ages 12 and younger, but Disney cruises attract fans of all ages. Old and young love the classic, Golden Age styling; famous customer service; and smaller size. To book: disneycruise.disney.go.com Carnival Cruise Line Families enjoy Carnival cruises in part because the ships have lots to do and offer good value for the money, along with a laid-back, social atmosphere. The brand-new Carnival Horizon is scheduled to set sail from New York starting May 2018. Where to? From New York, the Carnival Horizon will depart directly to Bermuda. An itinerary for an Eastern Caribbean cruise includes stops in Grand Turk, San Juan, and Amber Cove. Highlights: There’s a Seuss character breakfast (green eggs and ham, of course!), a parade, and themed activities. The new Carnival Horizon will also feature a Dr. Seuss-themed water park. The whole family can enjoy exciting water slides; two theaters, including an IMAX; and SportSquare, a large outdoor recreation area including mini golf, a ropes course, and foosball tables, to name a few of its many attractions. Carnival is also famous for its nightlife for grown-ups, including comedy clubs and big-name performers. Kids clubs: On offer for ages 2-17, including a special teen-only lounge with a DJ. Younger children do not have to be potty trained to attend, but children older than 3 will have their parents contacted if they need to be changed. Dining: Standout options include Bonsai Teppanyaki and Guy’s Burger Joint from Food Network personality Guy Fieri. Best for: Families with children ages 2 and older. Laid-back cruisers who like to be entertained all the time, even by the pool. Dr. Seuss fans and burger lovers. To book: carnival.com >> continued on page 50 November 2018 • siparent.com

T

hanksgiving is a wonderful time to show how thankful you are for life’s blessings by giving to those who are less fortunate. Here are some opportunities in Staten Island for those looking to give back this holiday season. Michael Ferrara Memorial Fund For years, Victoria Ferrara ran a holiday toy drive in memory of her son Michael, collecting toys for terminally ill children. After a yearlong break from the drive, Mrs. Ferrara decided to resurrect it, but with a twist. In lieu of a holiday toy drive, her new initiative is “Crochet, Quilt and Knit Drive for Cancer Patients.” Mrs. Ferrara is asking knitters, crotchetiers and quilters, to make blankets, slippers, chemo hats, afghans, lap throws, mittens, gloves, scarves, and regular hats for adults, children and babies. The drive will extend throughout the year with no deadline, special requests or monetary donations. “I do this in memory of my son, Michael, who passed away from leukemia, at the age of 18, in April of 1981, after a very

heroic and painful one-year battle with this disease. Hence, the Michael Ferrara Memorial Fund was born. I still want to make cancer patients, of any age or gender, be comfortable, warm and happy,” she said. All items can be dropped off at 1331 Bay Street, Apt. # 512 (buzz in #512). For additional details, email vickytattoos@netscape.com or call 929-308-0952. Toys 4 Autism After a successful inaugural year, John Louis Sublett is once again encouraging Staten Islanders to open their hearts for children with special needs. Last year, with the help of his son, John. Jr., who also has autism, along with the South Shore Rotary Club, he was able to fill 180 gift bags with specialized toys and distribute them to the students of P.S 37, a school for children with developmental delays. John Jr. is a former student at P.S. 37. This year, Mr. Sublett aims to fill a gift bag for all 400 children at the school and for children attending other special education schools on

LIPM Staten Island. You can donate specialized toys to Toys 4 Autism at http://a.co/6jREXsX (items will be shipped directly to Mr. Sublett). You can make a monetary donation at gofundme.com/ toys-for-autism. Richard Gardner Jr. Memorial Fund Since 1995, the Richard Gardner Jr. Memorial Fund has held Christmas parties for sick and underprivileged children, donating thousands of toys in memory of a young police officer who was killed. Every year, the organization reaches out to underprivileged families, sick children, underprivileged day care centers, children without families, organizations assisting families of domestic violence, underprivileged churches and children with sick parents. This year, they plan to visit children at Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island University Hospital on Christmas Eve. Their toy drive night will be held at Castleton Corners Pub (1815 Victory Blvd) on December 1st at 9pm. If you would like to make a donation please call 718-981-2016 or 718-273-9386, or email toys@rgtoydrive.org. No More Ouchies Mia Mannarino is at it again. The nine-year-old Staten Islander is fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but her main mission is to help other children who are sick. She’s already generously collected hundreds of toys and thousands of fun character Band-Aids for kids in the hospital. According to her mom, these “drops” not only bring a smile to the face of children who need it, but also keep Mia’s mind off her own battle with leukemia. Her next drop will be a special one, so be sure to check her Facebook page for updates. In the meantime, contact her mom to find out how you can donate character Band-Aids to the children in the Pediatric Unit at Richmond University Medical Center in time for the holiday season. Link to her Facebook page by searching Mia Mannerino, #TeamMiaTheGreat or #MiaTheGreat08 on Facebook. Meals on Wheels of Staten Island Meals on Wheels serves to ensure elderly people in our community receive nutritious meals and the human connection they need to help them live independently, by delivering two meals per day to senior citizens who live alone. Anyone over 18 with a driver’s license and two free hours one morning per week can apply to deliver meals. To make a donation, go to mealsonwheelsofstatenisland.com/donate. Where to Turn This Staten Island-based non-profit organi-

zation runs various drives and clean-up efforts throughout the year in an effort to promote the beautification of the borough, as well as provide assistance to those in need. Their initiatives rely on the generosity of volunteers. Each winter, they host two major initiatives: • Holiday Toy Drive: This year’s collection is called “Caring for the Carolinas.” Toys collected will be distributed to victims of Hurricane Florence. To donate, email Dennis McKeon at dennis.mckeon@where-to-turn.org. • Snow Shoveling for Seniors: Where to Turn recruits student volunteers every year, each of whom adopts one of the 2,500 Staten Island seniors registered and shovels for them, free of charge, when it snows. Go to where-to-turn.org/ news to apply. New York Cares For the last 29 years, New York Cares has organized the city’s largest winter coat drive, gathering over 1.8 million winter coats. Last year the organization collected and distributed 109,000 winter coats to families who would have otherwise faced a long, cold winter without one. For a map of drop-off locations where you can donate a warm coat to someone in need, go to newyorkcares.org/coat-drive/map. New York Cares also offers many volunteer opportunities, with over 1,600 listed on their website per month -- including opportunities for teens and kids over six years old. Go to newyorkcares.org/volunteer to learn more. You can also search for volunteer opportunities from other organizations on their home page. City Harvest City Harvest’s goal this year is to collect one million pounds of food to help feed the city. Together with the Daily News, they are collecting non-perishable food to keep shelves stocked at hundreds of soup kitchens, food pantries, and other community food programs across the city. Any school running a drive will be automatically entered into the Kids Can Help Competition. Individuals can help City Harvest reach their goal as well. Drop off non-perishable food donations at City Harvest’s office in Midtown Manhattan, any FDNY or NYPD station, and select Goodwill or Apple Bank locations throughout the five boroughs from October 23 through January 18. Go to https://www.cityharvest.org/dailynews/ for more information. Toys for Tots Run by The U.S. Marine Corps, Toys for Tots collects and distributes toys to children in need during the holidays so they can experience the joys of the season. There are nearly 40,000 Marines,

Marine Corps League members, veteran Marines and volunteers involved in annual campaigns nationwide. They are accepting brand new, unopened, unwrapped toys or monetary donations for less fortunate children in the community until early December (deadlines vary by location). 2018 collection locations will be announced soon. Go to toysfortots.org/donate to find local campaigns or to make a monetary donation. Or just keep an eye out for those big drop off boxes with the familar choo-choo-train Toys for Tots logo at local establishments near you. Project Hospitality This Staten Island-based organization serves the hungry and homeless, as well as people living with HIV & AIDS, the mentally ill and people battling addiction. Last year they served almost 1.8 million meals out of their Community Service Center in Stapleton and 26 mobile pantry sites across Staten Island, including new stops in Tottenville and Prince’s Bay. They are always looking for volunteers, ages 16 and older, to assist in their soup kitchen, food and clothing pantries, with child care services, tutoring, fundraising events and more. For more information on volunteering and to download an application, go to projecthospitality.org/how-youcan-help. You can donate a variety of items to their food pantry, including fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to non-perishables. For a list of most in-demand items, go to projecthospitality. org/how-you-can-help. Food donations can be dropped off at the Community Services Center at 514 Bay Street on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can also donate holiday supplies, including turkeys and food for a holiday feast, holiday gifts and toys, Halloween costumes and Easter baskets and other holiday items. You can call EJ Emerson at 718-448-1544, ext. 173, or e-mail her at ejemerson@projecthospitality.org if you wish to help with holiday needs. To make a monetary donation, go to projecthospitality.org/one-time-donation. Adopt-A-Family Each year, the Catholic Charities Adopt-AFamily Program serves hundreds of families during the holidays, both Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Through the Adopt-A-Family Program, you can help provide holiday gifts and winter necessities to families in need. After you fill out a Participation Form on the Catholic Charities website, you will be matched with a family. To learn more about the Adopt-A-Family Program, email Lakisha.morris@archny.org or call 646-794-2436. Visit catholiccharitiesny.org/ get-involved/2018-adopt-family-program for info. Q

uestion: Being good at mathematics is such an important life skill. What can I do to help my young children have success in math? –Very Curious Answer: Believe it or not, there is one major thing that parents can do to put their children on the road to success in math. It is your attitude toward math. It must be a positive one that promotes a “can do” attitude. Your young children will then more than likely have the same attitude. You must avoid saying that you hated math in school and could never handle math, as your children will also absorb this negative attitude. And your positive attitude must remain evident as your children progress through school. Once your children are in school, you should praise your children -- not for their talent in doing math but for their efforts, especially in using strategies to solve problems. This will encourage them to try hard. With effort, most children can master mathematics.

While it is true that students learn math at school, it should also be part of your life at home. Before your children get to kindergarten, help them learn to count. They can count shoes, socks and books. This is real-world mathematics. They can also sing counting songs with you as well as play games that require them to count a few spaces in order to move around a game board. Once your children are in elementary school, help your children develop instant recall (three seconds or less) of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Oral practice is just as effective as flashcards. Games and apps can provide solid practice, too. Finally, talk about and show them how math is used in our daily lives. And remember that it is practice, practice, practice that supports success in math. So, support and encourage their efforts to do their math homework.

LIPM Question: Our school searches for drugs in lockers using dogs. Do they have the right to do this and other searches? – Concerned Parents Answer: As long as a school official has “reasonable suspicion” that a student has broken a school rule or law, they can search a student or his or her belongings. School officials have more freedom to search a student than a police officer who needs probable cause or a search warrant in order to search you or your belongings. The use of trained dogs to sniff out drugs in students’ lockers definitely raises a threat to a student’s fourth amendment guarantee against unreasonable searches and seizures. However, schools look at lockers as school property. Courts have generally allowed dogs in searches of school property, like lockers, if students are given advance notice and allowed to be there. Locker searches cannot be performed in an arbitrary or discriminatory manner. Schools can do other searches. For example, urine test for drugs can be given to students who are participating in extra-curricular activities. Also, many schools are now using breathalyzer tests before school dances. However, drug or alcohol testing outside of voluntary extra-curricular activities could be a violation of their rights. Question: My elementary school child has to do a science fair project. I have been looking online for guidance along with project ideas. What are some of the best of the many websites that will help me? – Confused

Does Your Child Have A Disability or Special Health Care Needs? You are not alone! “We care, we’ve been there.”

Answer: First of all, parents need to realize that it is the child who has been assigned the project. So, parents should limit their participation to the role that the teacher has assigned to them. Unfortunately, parents may need to provide considerable guidance if a teacher has not prescribed definite steps to be followed by their students. One of the most difficult aspects of science fairs is for a child to select an appropriate project. Parents can give input that will help a child select a project that he or she is fully capable of doing. They should also stress the importance of finding a project the child finds to be interesting. Doing these two things can lead to a child successfully completing a project. Some children can devise their own projects. Many rely on looking at projects others have done. There are definitely plenty of websites devoted to science fair projects as well as apps, and don’t forget about books describing science fair projects. Here are some websites to get your child started: • www.all-science-fair-projects.com • www.sciencebob.com • www.sciencebuddies.org Besides providing an abundance of project ideas, these websites offer helpful advice to parents as well as scientific resources. You can also search for science fair project apps on your phones and tablets. However, you need to be aware that many apps are not truly free but require in-app purchases. Finally, for a project to be successful, it is essential that children understand the scientific principle that is key to their experiment. Parents should ask their children to explain the principle in their own words. November 2018 • siparent.com

Registered Sex Offenders What Parents Need to Know

I

By Michael Reilly, District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

often receive questions concerning the restrictions on registered sex offenders who live in the area of schools. Most of us have received those backpacked communications from schools advising that a registered sex offender relocated to a residence within the community. As a parent, I know how upsetting they can be. I’ve outlined some information for parents to use as a reference regarding sex offenders living nearby. Level 1 sex offenders, or low recidivist risk, must register for 20 years, unless they have a designation (sexual predator, sexually violent offender, or predicate sex offender), in which case they must register for life. Level 2 offenders, or moderate recidivist risk, and Level 3 offenders, or high recidivist risk, must register for life. Recidivist, put simply, is a repeat offender. New York State law restricts Level 3 registered sex offenders from being within 1,000 feet of a school in a parked vehicle or knowingly being on school grounds when on parole or probation. A Level 3 sex offender is designated as such due to their highest recidivist potential. They have a lifetime requirement to be registered and prohibited from being within 1,000 feet of a school or on school grounds. Level 1 and 2 registered sex offenders are ONLY restricted from being within 1,000 feet of school grounds while on parole or probation. Therefore, under New York State law there are no residency restrictions once parole and probation has been lifted. By law, only Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders are listed on the public directory. This directory now posts multiple photographs of registered sex offenders, as they become available, to provide New

Yorkers with additional information to keep their families safe (per the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services or NYS DCJS). A notification will not be issued to residents when a Level 1 offender lives nearby. You can view the New York State Sex Offender Registry at http://www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/nsor/ (or link to it directly from my column at siparent. com). You can search the registry by name to see if someone is a registered sex offender. You can also search by zip code or county to view a list of all sex offenders who live in a certain area. BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF REGISTERED SEX OFFENDERS • Report annually where they live by signing and returning an annual verification form to DCJS within 10 days after receiving it. • Notify DCJS in writing of a new address no later than 10 days after moving. • Report in person to a local police agency to have a current photograph taken every three years (Level 1 and 2 offenders) or every year (Level 3 offenders). • Notify DCJS in writing of any institution of higher education they are attending, enrolled, living or employed. Any change in status must be reported to DCJS no later than 10 days after the change. • Provide in writing internet service providers, internet screen names and email accounts. • Level 3 offenders and offenders with a sexual predator designation must personally verify their addresses every 90 days with law enforcement. Law enforcement may at that time photograph a level 3 offender if that offender’s appearance has changed.

If you ask my husband about his time in Iraq, he’ll be extremely modest about it. He’ll say “I’ve only been deployed once,” or “I was lucky enough to be on the base most of the time,” or “Well, I’m not even in the military anymore.”

raising kids out there just like ours, with mothers who gave birth alone while a spouse was deployed. There are children out there who haven’t seen their parent in months, sometimes years. Missed holidays and birthdays and graduations and milestone after milestone – this is simply a part of life for military families. So this Veteran’s Day, lets support the men and women who are sacrificing these precious moments with their families to keep us safe every day. Let’s go above and beyond to express how much we appreciate those sacrifices, and show they aren’t taken for granted here at home. As a family, you can write letters to service members to brighten their day; attend a Veteran’s Day parade or event nearby; send a care package to someone serving overseas; or simply thank a veteran in person. Let’s support the military spouses and families. Being the wife or husband of a service member can be incredibly difficult. They play the role of both parents for very long periods of time, with little to no help, all while unsure where their spouse is and if he or she is okay. And for children who don’t fully understand why Daddy or Mommy is gone for so long, well, it might just be the hardest on them of all. If you know of anyone in this situation, offer to help with babysitting or housework, or just be there during rough times. Having a deployed family member can be one of the loneliest feelings in the world, so do your part as a friend or family member to show they aren’t alone. Let’s support the less fortunate. With the help of a VA loan, my husband and I were able to purchase our first home not long ago. But there are many veterans who are not as blessed. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there were an estimated 40,000 veterans experiencing homelessness nationwide last year. If you know of a homeless veteran or wish to help end veteran homelessness, go to va.gov/homeless for ways to get involved.

Let’s honor the fallen. For families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, every day is Veteran’s Day. Every day is Memorial Day. Every day is a constant reminder their loved one is no longer with them. Let’s honor and remember those courageous men and women, not just on designated holidays, but all the time and every day. They will never be forgotten. And when we gather around the table later this month for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, let’s remember to give thanks to our country’s heroic military men and women, many of whom won’t be enjoying that day with their families. This Veterans Day, thank as many vets as you can. They might be a little modest about it, but show your gratitude anyway. They deserve it. By Jeannine Cintron, a Staten Island mom of two who is beyond grateful to her husband and to all the brave military men and women who serve their country.
