extracurriculars vs. extra downtime

When it comes to scheduling your kids’ after-school activities, how much is too much? For most of my childhood, my extracurricular schedule consisted of riding my bike to the local YMCA every Saturday morning for a swimming lesson. I’m pretty sure my mom and dad never asked themselves if they were scheduling too much or too little for me. And yet it’s a question parents these days seem to grapple with constantly. I always thought finding the right balance with my own children would be clear, but I can’t deny the pressure I sometimes feel when I hear about my kids’ friends and their weekly schedules: acting class, guitar, gymnastics, tennis, dance, Mandarin. To shed some light on this issue, I turned to local experts who support parents as they navigate matters like this.

What the Research Says To discuss the balance between scheduled activities and unscheduled me time for kids, it’s important first to ask: Are today’s kids actually overscheduled—or does it just feel that way? A recent paper in the journal Social Policy Report reviewed the research and found more than 80 percent of American children take part in some extracurricular activity, including sports, lessons, or clubs. About 7 million of those are enrolled in after-school programs and many more participate in clubs and organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Girls Inc., according to the report. Even though those numbers may seem high, the same report shows children and adolescents spend an average of only about five hours per week participating in organized activities. So, although extracurricular activities get a lot of attention, other activities—screen time, chores, spending time with friends and family, working, and doing homework—occupy as much (and often more) time than organized activities. In other words, it may make more sense to worry about your child’s screen time than about the hours he spends at after school programs. There are, however, cases where overscheduling poses problems for kids. The

same research suggests there may be a point of diminishing returns for a small number of young people with very high levels of involvement—meaning, some kids who participate in a multitude of extracurricular activities may see fewer advantages as they take on more and more. For instance, the educational benefits of playing sports seem to level off when kids participate in more than two competitive team sports. Dr. Danis Copenhaver, M.D., F.A.A.P., a pediatrician at South Slope Pediatrics, looks for telltale signs to make sure her young patients aren’t overscheduled. “I make a point to ask every patient and family about mealtimes and sleep,” she says. “A huge red flag for me is if meals are always eaten on the go and if bedtime is inconsistent or very late. In pre-teens and teenagers, I try and assess if they are enjoying the activities they are involved in. Sometimes they will answer honestly in the exam room and it’s the first time the parents are hearing about it! That can lead to a discussion about prioritizing time out of school for family, friends, sports and activities.” Overall, however, concerns about overscheduling seem to be overblown. Despite what we so often hear in the media, the research shows that only a very small number

feature / parenting of young people (between 3 and 6 percent) are very highly scheduled, spending 20 or more hours a week taking part in these activities. The same research also points to evidence that kids who participate in organized activities do better than those who don’t. These young people are more likely to have higher academic achievement, finish school, do well in college, be well-adjusted, smoke less, use drugs less often, and interact more with parents. There are fewer overbooked young children now than there used to be, Dr. Copenhaver says. “Parents value and protect the free play time that these younger children need,” she adds, noting, however, that this often depends on the age of the child. “The pre-teen and teenage crowd tends to be more over-scheduled, due to the pressures of school and extracurricular demands.” The Benefits of Downtime Even if kids may not for the most part be overscheduled, there are many studies emphasizing the pluses of unscheduled free time for children as well as adults. A 2012 report by Mary Helen Immordino-Yang of the University of Southern California showed that when we are resting our brains are not actually idle and that downtime is essential to many of our mental processes. The report examined related research showing this relaxed time is an opportunity for the brain to make sense of what it has recently learned. Kids need to play and explore, says Sharon Peters, who founded the Park Slope-based marriage and family counseling practice Parents Helping Parents. She is a big proponent of building downtime into a family’s schedule. For more than 20 years, she has been supporting parents as they raise their children. She also draws from her own personal experiences as a mother of five children, several of whom have special needs. “All group settings or one-on one lessons with a teacher are demanding in ways that individual time isn’t,” she says.

Young kids can’t simply roam the streets alone, Peters notes, but it’s essential to fit into their schedules the type of play that encourages exploration and independence. “A great way to incorporate this for younger children is finding a safe space for them to wander and make decisions on their own,” she says. Her comment rings true for me personally, as I’ve noticed my 2-year-old is at his most relaxed and engaged when he is wandering through Prospect Park with me following a few feet behind him. Downtime benefits kids of all ages, according to Dr. Copenhaver. “In younger children ages 2-5 unstructured play time encourages imagination and cooperation. It can also allow them time to rest and recharge, avoiding becoming overstimulated and cranky,” she says.

Me time also has specific benefits for older children. “In school-aged kids, I find that non-scheduled downtime allows them to more deeply explore their likes and develop their talents,” Dr. Copenhaver says. “Some kids develop a love of reading, others find that they still enjoy playing at the park, while others take the time to participate in preparing meals for their family.” She adds that in teens, stress levels decrease and sleep duration and quality usually benefit first from non-scheduled down time.

feature / parenting Finding the Right Balance Given what we know about the positives of extracurricular activities and also the benefits of downtime, how do we go about finding what works for us? Here are some tips for ensuring your kids experience the right mix of enriching activities and nourishing downtime. Create a schedule that works for your family. Because many children spend too much time using mobile devices and watching TV, the American Association of Pediatrics recommends maintaining at least one hour of physical activity a day and limiting screen time to two hours a day, according to Melanie Wilson-Taylor, M.D., F.A.A.P., also of South Slope pediatrics. “Oftentimes parents are busy with work or taking care of younger children and there can be pressure to make sure that kids are kept busy,” she says. “Many parents often feel the need to compete and make sure their child has access to every extracurricular activity in order to be a better candidate for the next level of school.” Carefully consider what activities are right for your child. Dr. Wilson-Taylor recommends parents ask their child if she enjoys the activity and to consider whether there are true benefits—academic, social, personal development—in it. She cautions that sometimes the amount of time a child spends in an activity is reasonable but the type of activity may not fit the personality of the child. Parents should consider whether their child prefers group or individual activities, for instance, or whether the child will experience undue anxiety of performing in an end-of-year production or recital. “Parents should also be mindful about how extracurricular activities affect the behavior and self-worth,” Dr. WilsonTaylor says. “If the child is focused on always winning and values themselves based on their ability to succeed in the activity, caregivers should re-evaluate the importance of that activity.” One good rule of thumb she tells her patients: Due to a limited attention span, structured activities for children younger than 6 should be limited to 30 minutes at a time. Older children can tolerate activities that are an hour or two.

Look out for the red flags. According to Dr. WilsonTaylor, temperament and age play a big part in judging whether a child is overscheduled. Some children like participating in activities outside of school or on the weekends and thrive on constantly doing something. Other children are homebodies or prefer unstructured activities. She cautions that “an overscheduled child has more tantrums prior to the activity, may take a long time to get ready, and may outright say ‘no’ to going. Older children may exhibit poor sleep patterns the night before in anticipation of participating in the event the next day. They also may seem more isolated from friends or family because they are always ‘doing something.’” Parents should also be concerned if they notice a child is clingier to caregivers, his grades are dropping, or her homework is getting squeezed into small gaps of free time—in the car, on the bus, waking up early before school. “If not attended to, young kids communicate discomfort one way or the other and raise the flag. This could be acting out in school or more tantrums at home,” Peters says.

Children may also exhibit stress-induced physical symptoms, some of which can mimic actual illness. “When a child’s day is scheduled down to the minute, they can become stressed, and sometimes manifest physical symptoms of that stress,” Dr. Copenhaver says. “Stomach aches, headaches and fatigue are common symptoms that children present to my office with, and the problem is sometimes an overloaded schedule without enough down time.” In her practice, she also sees teens complaining of fatigue, and often finds out they are sleeping fewer than five hours a night because of their busy school and after-school schedules. Trust Your Gut. “Like everything connected to parenting,” Peters says “this issue is very individual to each family.” Ultimately, she says, parents know their children—and since each situation and child is different, parents must rely on their instincts to decide when their child needs fewer after-school activities and more me time. The bottom line: You probably don’t need to worry that your child is overscheduled or that the number of activities in which he participates will have a negative impact on him. However, me time remains an essential part of everyone’s life and plays an important role in children’s development—so make sure to schedule some unscheduled time into your child’s life regularly. This is the second in a two-part series about the importance of downtime. To read last month’s article on me time for moms, see nymetroparents.com/mom-time. By Rosalind Muggeridge

1,000 Public School seats coming to the island Seeing St. John Villa close its doors in June after 94 years was heartbreaking, to say the least. But the good news is the approximately seven-acre property is not destined to become merely a vacant lot or residential housing. Instead, the city has acquired the space and plans to convert it to a new public school. The new school, which Mayor de Blasio deems will be a “state-of-the-art facility” will offer over 1,000 public school seats to Staten Islanders in the area.

Borough President oddo announces the city’s plans to turn st. john villa’s space into a new public school Borough President Oddo adequately expressed the emotions that many feel regarding the news. “This is a deeply bittersweet moment because the pain of the St. John Villa family is still palpable, and it will be that way for a long time. I recognize that,” he said in a statement. “The closure of this school will never sit well with some, and I very much understand those deep emotions. As the person responsible to represent the 500,000 people of this borough, I knew what would be even worse than St. John Villa closing would be St. John Villa closing and this bastion of education reduced into an unwanted residential development. We have seen that regrettable scenario play out nearby in recent years. I am pleased the City has stepped up in a big way to acquire this precious space. I will do all I can to ensure the learning that takes place here in the future lives up to the rich tradition of educational excellence of St. John Villa.”

Conference House Exhibit Brings Pollution Awareness to the Island A new exhibit in Conference House Park is shedding some light on the darkness of polluted waters. Plastics: Pelagic Peril focuses on the detriments to our health, marine life and local economies that are imposed by the millions of pounds of trash floating around in the sea. The exhibit features poignant images of marine life by local artists and outlines specific actions that we all can take to protect and conserve the world’s oceans. It opens on September 13 and will be on display to the public at Conference House Park until November 17.

Car seat regulations are hard to keep up with and manage, especially because they are constantly changing and are different state to state. Keep this checklist, compiled with the help of Shane Bland, certified car seat safety technician through Safe Kids Worldwide Westchester, and Greg Durocher, CEO and child passenger safety technician instructor at Safe Ride 4 Kids, on your fridge, in your glove compartment, in your purse, or wherever you will remember to reference

Don’t neglect the owner’s manual! We live in a world where we constantly check the Internet for everything. Resist that urge when it comes to car seats. The first thing you should do when purchasing a car seat is thoroughly read the owner’s manual, according to Bland, who is also the manager of Gymboree Play Music Center in Scarsdale. If you have questions, check the owner’s manual. If they still aren’t answered, check the FAQ section on the manufacturer’s website. feature / parenting Location is everything The safest spot in the car for a child in a car seat is the middle rear spot, according to Durocher, who, before coming a child passenger safety technician, was a paramedic. This location protects the child the most from an impact on any point of the vehicle because it is the farthest from the left, right, front, and back of the car. “Safety is about putting the odds in your favor and looking at the real risk exposure,” Durocher says. “How do we mitigate as many risks as we can?” Safe Ride 4 Kids is a team of child passenger safety technicians who empower parents to keep children safe while driving. If you have two car seats, the rule of thumb is to put the youngest child closest to the driver so the driver does not have any trouble getting the child out of the car, and an older child can exit the car on his own on the curbside away from traffic, according to Bland. Face the trunk for as long as possible At Safe Kids Worldwide, the recommendation is to keep your child rear facing for as long as she can fit that way comfortably. The purpose of a rear-facing car seat is to allow the car seat to act as a shell in the case of a forwardfacing crash, according to Bland. When a car is hit from behind, which is the most frequent kind of crash, the child will be propelled toward the front of the car regardless of which way he is facing. If the child is facing the trunk, he will be propelled into the car seat, which will protect him, rather than into the seatbelt, which will give him whiplash. The seat will protect the head and spine of the child.

Like milk, car seats expire Each manufacturer will place an expiration date on a child safety seat, which is normally around six years. While passing down a car seat can save money, make sure it is still safe to use. Be cognizant of recalls When purchasing a car seat, check for recalls on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website, nhsta.gov. While NHSTA issues recalls, it does not certify car seats, the federal government issues crash test performance criteria and each manufacturer crash tests its own products in accordance to this criterion. The manufacturer will then certify the product on its own website. Seat security After you install a car seat, it should move no more than 1 inch in each direction. This is measured at the seatbelt buckle, in other words at the child’s feet when rear facing and at the child’s bottom when forward facing. This test can

be performed by shaking the seat ‘with the strength of a firm handshake,’ according to Durocher. Proper buckling Call now For a personal tour In a rear-facing, five-point harness car seat, the hole where the strap goes through on the back of the car seat should be at or below the child’s shoulders, according to Durocher. In a forward-facing, five-point harness car seat, the loop should be at or above the child’s shoulders. The difference is, in a forward car crash, a forward-facing child will lean into the seatbelt when it is higher up rather than having it compress their spine. If the child is rear facing, a lower seatbelt prevents the child from sliding up the back of the car seat. When determining how tight a harness should be, perform the pinch test. If you can pinch the webbing, but not enough that the straps completely touch each other, the straps are secured properly.

“The straps should be ‘snug as a hug,’” Durocher says. Five-step test When determining whether or not your child still needs a booster seat, you should perform the five-step test as referred to by the National Highway Safety and Traffic Administration.

• Make sure your child’s back is touching the back of the seat. • Do her feet touch the floor? • Do her knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat? • Does the seat belt cross the shoulder and the lap belt sit low on the hips? • Can the child stay seated, comfortably, this way for the entire duration of the trip? While many parents think the defining moment to take a child out of a booster seat is only his height, you still must determine that the child passes each of the steps above, despite his height. The ultimate goal is not a certain height, but rather proper seatbelt positioning, according to Durocher. “Seatbelts are not designed for children under four-foot-nine and do not protect your young child on their own,” Bland says. “The booster seat ensures that the seatbelt is placed appropriately on the shoulder and the lap belt sits comfortably on the hipbones.” Provided by MommyBites.com

time to ace the school team tryouts How to stand out and make the team Local sportswriter Joe LoVerde coached youth sports on Staten Island for nearly 40 years. He’s now joined by his son, Mike, a sandlot baseball player on the Island and a senior at Lyndon State College in Vermont, where he’s on the baseball team and majors in Electronic Journalism Arts. september 2018

For many students, back to school means more than just returning to the classroom. For those who hope to be student athletes, it’s time to make that first impression and work to secure your spot on a team. Tryouts for some fall season teams might already have been held during the summer, but there are some teams that won’t conduct tryouts until after the start of school. For instance, most high school baseball programs have at least a preliminary tryout during the fall because of the weather, even though the season won’t start until spring. Playing a sport in school is a great way to add to the school experience — plus give your child something to add to that

college resume. Being on a team helps give children an easy path to making friends and finding their niche, not to mention set a foundation for a lifestyle of health and fitness. Among some of the sports that traditionally begin in the fall are swimming, football, volleyball, cross-country, soccer, bowling, golf and fencing. Besides baseball, teams that most likely will stage tryouts during the fall are those that take place during the winter, such as gymnastics, wrestling and basketball. The larger the number of students who try out for a team, the more difficult it probably will be to make the final cut. Here are some pointers to give your child a leg up on making a team:

www.siparent.com

8/21/18 4:51 PM

d • Find out when tryouts are being held. If your child misses tryouts, that’s the first sign to a coach that his or her dedication is lacking and will certainly be considered. Your child should be proactive and seek out when and where tryouts will be held. If there are no announcements, he or she should go directly to the athletic director’s office for information. • Be punctual. If a tryout is scheduled for 10 a.m. on a Saturday, your child should not be sauntering in at 10:05. Arrive at the tryout site at least 15 minutes before they are scheduled to begin in order to be ready to participate at the scheduled starting time. Anyone who fails to do this will delay the session and that is not a good way to impress the coaching staff. • Look like an athlete. Don’t wear jeans or collared shirts to a sports tryout. Make sure to dress for the sport you hope to play, right down to the footwear, and bring the proper equipment. The school will supply some items, like soccer balls, for instance, but your child should not expect to borrow a potential teammate’s golf club. And with wood baseball bats now mandated, your child should have his own. If he borrows someone else’s and it breaks, you should be prepared to replace it. • Attitude counts. Being attentive to the coach’s instructions and making sure not to disrupt the tryout are important. Showing hustle and a solid work ethic are qualities coaches appreciate. Advising your child to treat the tryout with the seriousness it deserves can make or break his or her goal of making the team. Best of luck to all the young athletes who try out. Have a great season — or seasons!

• Make sure your child sees the doctor for a physical examination. That will surely be a requirement for being on a team. Get it out of the way early. See if your child’s school offers these exams on site.

easy home organization hacks for families Clutter is a fact of life for most parents. One mom offers tips for taming the mess and getting your home in order. By Jennifer Garry Jennifer Garry is a freelance writer and Westchester mom. She writes the blog CuddlesandChaos.com.

Let’s be honest: When you have kids, you accumulate an abundance of stuff. From products to soothe and comfort them as babies to itty bitty figures and the countless toy houses that go with them when they’re a little older, it can get really tough to tackle clutter. While I can be the queen of messes, sometimes I go on epic decluttering sprees that leave me feeling much more sane and in charge of my surroundings—even if neither of those things is actually true. In the spirit of helping a mother out and making you feel more sane and in charge, I’m sharing eight super-simple organization tricks that my sister and I swear by.

Hack #1: Baskets In my house, there are baskets everywhere. We have shelves filled with them. They’re in our cabinets and under side tables. They’re next to my girls’ desks and all over our basement. The reason? They offer an incredibly easy way to contain similar items and hide things that look messy. Toys are sorted into different categories and the baskets are put onto our shelves. Things my daughters need to put away are in baskets next to their desks. Smaller baskets hold like food items to make it easier to grab and go. And I love the look of nice, cozy blankets stored in a basket instead of haphazardly strewn over chairs. Baskets can also be a great way to store puzzles and card games, which brings me to our next hack…

Hack #2: Storing Board Games I won’t lie to you—our board game situation was the bane of my existence for a while. I cringed any time one of the girls asked to play a game because I knew that getting a board game out was going to require some serious Tetris skills and would more likely than not end with me getting hit in the head with flying game pieces. That is until I made the (brilliant) decision to store all of our board games sideways instead of lying them flat and on top of one another. This way, when someone wants to play a game, all you have to do is slide it out of its slot. There’s no delicate balancing act or cursing or crawling on the floor looking for tiny pieces. Pro tip: You might want to secure boxes with a rubber band if you store them this way to make sure the tops don’t slide off.

Hack #4: Food Containers for Craft Supplies Like dress up, craft supplies are another area that gets unruly really quickly. For one, I’m kind of a craft supply hoarder. Aside from typical things such as crayons, markers, and glue, I keep an assortment of things that may otherwise have found their way into the garbage. I love seeing what creative ways my daughters find to use things such as bottle caps or a pair of jeans that got too tattered to wear anymore. (The jeans were turned into a pretty cool throw pillow by my tween.) The problem? With so many random things on hand, it can be difficult to corral them and then store everything neatly—until my repurposed craft supplies inspired me to repurpose containers to hold them in. Now I clean and save takeout containers or any other plastic containers our food comes in (hummus containers, for instance, are a great size for holding tiny beads) and store craft supplies in those. Not only is it cheap and eco-friendly, but it keeps things contained and makes it easier to stack them inside our craft closet.

Hack #5: Pill Organizer for Hair Ties Hack #3: Kids Dress Up Outfits I don’t know about you, but I’m a saver. If I think my kids will get use out of it, it stays. That means we have a ragtag collection of old Halloween costumes, party props, and dress up clothes exploding all over the place. While I’ve yet to tackle our mess, I absolutely love how my sister organized my niece’s dress up. With nothing more than a hanging rod and a shelf, not only does her dress up look nice, but it’s organized in a way that’s manageable for my niece and makes choosing things much less overwhelming than digging through an enormous mound (which is our current situation). The baskets up top keep all of the loose accessories together and out of view.

Another kids organization problem always making me crazy is hair ties— especially the teensy, tiny hair ties required for babies’ fine hair and for securing small braids and ponytails. They’re so small they’re hard to keep track of to begin with. Add in varying sizes and kids who get very specific about what color is allowed to grace their head each day and you have yourself a situation that can easily suck up more of your precious morning time than you’d like. Pill organizers have completely changed that for me. The small compartments are the perfect size for sorting hair ties of different colors, sizes and materials. It makes it easier to find what you’re looking for and helps limit choices if your daughter has to pick them out herself. It’s essential to note that, obviously, this is not a great idea if you regularly use pill organizers for actual medicine. I wouldn’t want my daughter feeling comfortable sorting through one for hair ties if there were organizers elsewhere in the house containing medicine that she might find and feel free to explore.

Everyone should have the right to clean air

tobacco free staten island’s smoke-free housing victory With all we know about the dangers of secondhand and even thirdhand smoking, smoke-free housing should be a no-brainer. But Tobacco Free Staten Island, an organization within JCC’s Reality Check program comprised of adults and youth dedicated to promoting a healthy, tobacco-free norm, fought hard for it – and won. They shared their experience with us.

september 2018

jcc tobaccoUSETHIS.indd 2

Since the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued regulation requiring all federally funded public housing to be smoke-free, more than 400,000 NYC residents will officially have access to clean air. To public health advocates, this is a dream come true. But to others, this is a mandate on assumed rights. The policy has had reasonable controversy and has questioned NYCHA’s (New York City Housing Authority) commitments to tackling other serious problems, but it’s a start. For years, the tobacco industry has targeted low income communities through price discounting, higher density of tobacco retailers and marketing to marginalized populations. These approaches have led to high rates of smoking among low-income communities and youth. It is policies such as smoke-free housing that have helped to reduce the gaps among these communities and encourage current smokers to quit.

Having worked with many residents and served on the NYCHA Advisory Board, we knew this would be a difficult endeavor that required the participation and collaboration among multiple sectors within the city. At the table sat many individuals from diverse backgrounds with extensive experience and knowledge, all coming together with a common goal of implementing a policy and addressing barriers that we may encounter. With different views and opinions, it was clear that there would be intense conversations along the way. As the monthly meetings progressed, time was not on our side. Now, after a year and the full roll out of the policy over 300 public housing developments across the city – including some in Staten Island – are smoke free. The policy will help to reduce exposure of secondhand smoke to thousands of residents in the buildings. As the Surgeon General has stated, there is no safe level of secondhand smoke. Public health policies benefit the community and can significantly impact some of the most vulnerable populations. However, there is always some resistance. It is important to recognize, that as members of the community, it is our responsibility to use our voice, to advocate for policies and action. This includes, writing letters to the elected officials or your representatives. Speaking to local community organizations and identifying resources both available and lacking and spreading the word. While this is a start in the right direction, there is always more work to be done. If you are a property manager looking to implement a tobacco-free policy within your building contact Ashley Zanatta 718.475.5277 or azanatta@sijcc.com.

Question: What are the basics for kids having a safe school lunch? What should parents be doing as well as kids? – For Good Health Answer: This is a great question, because September is National Food Safety Education Month. And according to STOP Foodborne Illness -- a national nonprofit public health organization dedicated to the prevention of illness and death -- you should follow these suggestions for packing your children’s lunches to prevent foodborne illnesses: 1. Keep in mind the bacteria danger zone. Bacteria grow rapidly in the zone of 40-140 F. 2. Wash your hands. When preparing lunches, STOP Foodborne Illness stresses the importance of washing your hands thoroughly and keeping all surfaces clean. 3. Use an insulated lunch box. Whether hard-sided or soft, this helps keep your child’s food out of the “danger zone.” 4. Use ice packs. This is another inexpensive

“must have” item, according to STOP Foodborne Illness, that is vital for keeping cold foods cold. 5. Use an insulated thermos. 6. Freeze drinks before packing. Frozen milk, juice boxes and water bottles keep the drinks cold, along with other cold foods you’ve packed. Frozen items put in the lunch box will be drinkable by lunch time. 7. Pack hot foods while hot. Don’t wait for hot foods to cool down before pouring into an insulated thermos. Preheat your thermos by filling it with boiling water and letting it sit for a few minutes, then pour out the water and add your hot food. 8. Wash and separate fresh fruits and veggies. 9. Use individual snack packs. 10. Add room-temperature-safe foods. Talk with your children about things they should do at school to prevent foodborne illnesses: 1. Encourage them to wash their hands before and after eating. 2. Avoid putting food on tables. Pack a paper towel or some wax paper that your children can use to put on the table and then place their food on it. 3. Explain the 5-second myth. Be sure your chil-

8/21/18 2:26 PM

dren know the real “5 second rule,” that any food that touches the floor for any amount of time needs to be thrown away. 4. Toss perishable food. To avoid foodborne illnesses, tell your children to throw away perishables like meat, poultry or egg sandwiches if not eaten. 5. Make sure lunch boxes are regularly cleaned and sanitized. 6. Teach them these Food Safety Tips for School Cafeteria Lunches: • Checking for undercooked food. For instance, if hamburger meat looks bloody, they should not eat it, or any hot food that is cold. • Checking for food that looks spoiled. Your child shouldn’t eat vegetables that are wilting, have mold or look discolored. • Reporting unsanitary conditions. Examples include: cafeteria workers without hairnets, surfaces or equipment that are dirty, yellowish water flowing from a water fountain, and bugs or rodents roaming around. If your child sees these kind of conditions, they should report it to a school authority immediately. • Inspect the cafeteria yourself. STOP Foodborne Illness urges parents to make a personal visit to their children’s school and take a good look around the kitchen. Anything that looks like a possible food safety hazard should be reported to authorities.

Question: Recently, my daughter in middle school has been getting bullied online. The people who are bullying her are classmates. They say she only gets good grades because she is a teacher’s pet. What can she do? What can I do? – Worried Mom Answer: You definitely need to be aggressive in fighting these bullies. You need to report what is happening to the social media site or sites where the messages are coming from. After receiving a report, most social media sites will block their email address with your email provider and block their number from being able to send your child text messages. You should also contact the appropriate person at your child’s school. The school needs to be aware that cyberbullying is occurring and deal appropriately with the cyberbullies. You should also check the laws in your state against cyber harassment. There is a lot of information out there to help you to know what to do, and the people mentioned above will provide you lots of information to get started. Make sure that your daughter knows to never, never respond to a message, text or post that contains bullying remarks. Doing so usually only makes the situation worse and is providing the reaction cyberbullies want. However, you might want to reply once telling the sender that this has been reported and make sure that you do the reporting. You can also change your child’s email address. Make sure that you keep a record of all the bullying messages. If you are unable to print out a message, you should take a screen shot. You will definitely need all this information to back up your words if you need to pursue a criminal or civil lawsuit. Remember that often the child being cyberbullied is also being bullied in school. You need to make sure that your child knows how much you love and support her and are willing to help her.
