COVER STORY Give Dance a Chance: 20 Reasons to Try Consistent Classes Don’t be fooled by glittery costumes and false eyelashes—competitive dancers are athletes, who deserve to be taken just as seriously as members of any other team such as soccer, swimming, or track. Dance has multiple benefits—often more than other sports. And yes, dance performed regularly and intensively is both a sport and a multi-sensory art form that may raise your child’s self-esteem.

swimsuit Donations Last summer, when Tina Nicholas noticed that many children were turned away from the Island’s public pools because they did not have a swimsuit, she knew she wanted to do something. That’s why she has set up a donation bin at the P.S. 14 Playground Pool and she’s working to get bins set up at all the public pools on the Island. For now, donations can be dropped off from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at P.S. 14 Playground Pool in Stapleton Playground, located at 100 Tompkins Avenue. Besides swimsuits, they are also looking for swim diapers, white t-shirts, and towels. For more information, you can contact Tina Nicholas at

operation Backpack Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s annual Operation Backpack will be running until Friday, August 8th. Last year, the campaign collected 16,000 new backpacks for NYC’s homeless children. People who wish to participate are asked to drop off new backpacks and school supplies to any Duane Reade store. Duane Reade will also give customers the opportunity to make a monetary donation at the register. This is a great way for parents and children to get involved in their community and make a difference. Visit our site for more information on supplies required and donation locations. The Staten Island Board of Realtors is also collecting backpacks and supplies during their annual Pack-to-School drive. Every year the Board of Realtors adopts a school to support year round with supplies and monetary donations. This year’s school will be PS 78. If you’d like to contribute to the Pack-to-School drive, donations can be dropped off at 1535 Richmond Avenue Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5p.m.

SUMMER FUN

>>> TECHNOLOGY VS.

OUTDOOR PLAY?

Combine Them Together for a Win-Win

here’s no denying the benefits of technology, even from an early education standpoint, but when those technological devices get in the way of a younger generation enjoying fresh air and the wonders of the outdoors, it’s time to put on the brakes. How do parents convince a generation that doesn’t know life without an iPad to go play outside?

T

According to Christina Fecio, director of education and training for Doodle Bugs! Children’s Centers, parents need to adapt by bringing nature and technology together. “Most parents today remember their childhood days filled with outdoor play— making forts in the woods, chasing butterflies, riding bikes, etc. because there were no devices to entertain them inside. Being indoors was boring. It’s just not the case today with tablets, TVs, cell phones, iPods. For those parents that struggle with their children using their designated screen time inside on a beautiful spring or summer day, there are ways to use technology to help children appreciate what’s outside,” Fecio said.

LEARN HOW CHILDREN CAN BENEFIT FROM COMBINING TECHNOLOGY AND FRESH AIR.

Here are some tips from Fecio on combining technology and fresh air for children of all ages: Nature Scavenger Hunt In the “notes” section of any device, create a list of items (stick, stone, leaves, flowers) that children will find outdoors. Kids can use the camera function to take a photo of each item found. For Preschoolers: Keep it simple with the number of items For Young School Agers: Make the list a bit longer and add in a few “tricky” items, such as an “object that looks like a letter in your name.” For Older School Agers: Consider widening the search area to a neighbor’s yard or park, or allowing them to create a list of their own for a sibling/friend. Explore Nature Day or Night Daytime: At your local park or nature preserve, look for animal tracks and use the” iTrack Wildlife” app to identify them. The Lite version is free and allows you to identify up to 5 species. Nighttime: Use “The Night Sky” app ($0.99) to identify planets and constellations. Both apps are fairly intuitive so even young children will be successful with adult support. Fitness Fun The Fit List: Challenge children with the “workout of the day’”– a list of outdoor activities can range from “6 times down the slide, 3 tries at

hula hooping, and one game of hopscotch” for younger kids and get more elaborate for older children (shooting hoops, rollerblading backwards, or practicing new yoga poses). Children have to use the camera or video option to record evidence that the challenge is complete. Family Fitness Challenge: Make fitness a family affair! Based on your child’s interests and abilities, consider using Pedometer, Couch to 5K, or RunKeeper to meet your activity goals. Creativity in Art Put a modern twist on the artist with his sketchpad by installing a free painting app like “Doodle Buddy.” Bring your tablet to the park, the waterfront, or just the backyard and challenge kids to paint what they see (or whatever inspires them). Challenge older kids with a contest. One person or team “paints” 3-5 images of things they see and the other team has to find (and take photos) of those actual objects. Repeat and the team with the most correct photos in the shortest time wins. Have children use sidewalk chalk to create large, life-size scenery, then lay down on the ground to insert themselves into the scene. Need inspiration? You can see some great examples in an article online by Huffington Post. Search: sidewalk chalk. Children can make comics by taking photos of your neighborhood or an excursion, then use those images to make comics using “Strip Design” or another kid-friendly app. Provided by Doodle Bugs! GETTING ON BOARD THE POTTY TRAIN!

otty training is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s life. It’s often one that parents look forward to and dread at the same time. The thought of finally seeing the end of that constant stream of diaper boxes - not to mention the end of the financial drain, is like a glorious dream come true. But at what cost? The process of actually making the commitment to put in the time and effort sends some parents into denial. “She’s not ready yet” might actually mean “I’m not ready for the fight!”

P

Summer is a popular potty training time since kids can get in and out of their clothing quicker. Looking ahead to September, many parents are preparing their child for a preschool that has a no-diapers policy. If you are ready to tackle this parenting task this summer, here are some tips.

WIN!

A SPECIAL EDITION, GOLD BABYBJÖRN SMART POTTY go to www.siparent.com to enter

When? • Most children can be ready to start potty training between 18-24 months. Many children will train easier before 24 months; some can become willful after that point. • Both the family and the child need to be ready. Review the signs of readiness and make a plan with your significant other. • If your child is having trouble, stop for 2-4 weeks and then try to restart. • Find a time when you can be around during the week to start potty training. Summer vacations or holidays are the best times. How? • Sticker charts are great. If your child earns a certain number of stickers, they can earn a non-food reward. • If your child still wants to go in their diaper, take them out of it. If they are wearing underwear, they will feel uncomfortable when they are wet. If you are concerned about the mess, you can put the underpants on under the diaper. For those kids who don't like wearing underpants, encourage them to wear them for a short time and offer rewards when they keep them clean and dry. (As a side note, there is nothing developmentally different between pull-ups and a diaper. Training will go quicker with underpants.)

Where? • If your child has a certain area of the house they prefer to go potty in, it might be a good idea to get a portable potty and let them try that. • Put the portable potty in a room where the child typically plays to help them get used to the idea. Other Considerations • Most kids aren't ready to be dry at night until they start waking up dry from naps and some mornings. • To help keep them dry at night, stop liquids 2-3 hours after dinner, depending on your child's bedtime. • When traveling: take a portable potty or potty seat with you, but you may need pull-ups for long car trips or plane rides. Is your child ready? Here are some questions to ask yourself to determine if now is the time to start: • Follows simple directions • Shows interest in wearing underpants • Shows interest in the potty • Communicates that she or he is wet or soiled • Stays dry for two or more hours • Is willing to cooperate. (It is not recommended to begin potty training during a significant change in a child’s life, such as a new sibling or a move.) Provided by Dr. Robyn Strosaker, a pediatrician at UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

GOOD SPORTS by Joe LoVerde

I don’t know about you, but in my house our kids’ sports schedules have often wreaked havoc with any efforts to eat healthy.

EATING FOR COMPETING

Traveling long distances to games, playing multiple games on the same day, weekendlong tournaments, games during the school year — it’s a combination that lends itself to haphazard food plans. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are often afterthoughts; something you grab on the go, or at the park’s snack stand. And it doesn’t always lead to the best choices. “We have found that many of today’s young athletes are often overfed and undernourished,” said Katherine Brooking, a registered dietician and “food coach.” “Vegetables, dairy and fruit groups are often short-changed.” Brooking was one of several experts brought together recently for a roundtable discussion in Manhattan sponsored by Pop Warner Little Scholars (better known in this borough as Pop Warner Football, represented here by the Staten Island Lions program) and DSM Nutritional Products. And she said poor habits lead not only to poor health, but also often to poor play. “Kids are not getting key nutrients like potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C,” as well as calcium and vitamin D, Brooking said. “A lot of the nutrients you usually find in vegetables and fruit are lacking. Ironically we are overconsuming some things that we don’t need, like sugars.” Perhaps that’s why, as was indicated in a national survey of more than 3,500 Pop Warner parents conducted last spring by that organization and DSM, more than 50 percent of the parents said that their young athlete is significantly hungrier during the sports season. While nearly three out of four of the parents surveyed said that fruit is the snack they give their children at the field(like oranges at halftime), more than half said that they give their youngsters chips or crackers. Fresh vegetables are provided by just 17 percent of parents. Healthy choices have always been included in the diets of Jason and Devin McCourty, twin brothers who grew up in New Jersey playing Pop Warner football and now play in the National Football League. “Our mom made sure we had plenty of fruit and I still do that,” said Devin, a safety with the New England Patriots. Jason added that their mom’s dinners growing up always included a meat, starch and vegetable. “And I eat the same way today,” he said. “The only difference now that I’m grown up is that I get to choose my vegetable.” “If we try to skip our vegetables, she still gets on us,” Devin added. Dr. Majid Fotuhi, a neurologist and the author of the book “Boost Your Brain,” recommends a strategy for making sure your children eat healthy foods.

32

AUGUST 2014

www.siparent.com

“Provide limited choices,” he said. If your child wants a snack, Dr. Fotuhi suggests saying something like, “You can have blueberries or strawberries — which one do you want?” Brooking said that “real food should be your priority source” of nutrition, but added that “supplements can be beneficial in rounding out your diet.” Trouble is, just four out of 10 of those surveyed said their children take a daily vitamin, and less than one in 10 said their children take a specific vitamin or nutrient, such as calcium or vitamin D. Big mistake, according to Dr. Fotuhi, who is a big proponent of omega-3 DHA for brain health. “Most Americans are not getting the daily recommended 220 milligrams of DHA,” he said. Salmon probably is the best-known source of omega 3s, “but you can’t feed your kids salmon every day,” Dr. Fotuhi said. He gives his own young children 500 milligrams of omega 3 DHA each day, while he and his wife take 1,000 milligrams daily. “I prefer DHA found in algae,” he said, “which doesn’t have a lot of the same contaminants found in fish oil.” Nearly 100 percent of Pop Warner parents recognized the importance of making sure their children are sufficiently hydrated when competing or practicing, but Brooking warned against giving them one of the many so-called “healthy” juices. “First of all,” she said, “you’re not getting the same benefit from juice than you would get from fruit or vegetables in their regular form. Also, there is often a lot of added sugar.” Brooking said it’s best to avoid them but, if juice is the only option, check the nutritional facts on the bottle to see what kind of vitamins it contains, if there is fiber (good) and if there is sugar (bad). Water, she said, is the best option.

WHILE WE ALL KNOW EATING HEALTHY IS IMPORTANT WHILE PREGNANT, WE ALL HAVE OUR CRAZY CRAVINGS SOMETIMES. HERE ARE SOME OF THE FOODS OUR READERS HAD TO HAVE DURING THEIR PREGNANCY. Irene Kaplan: Believe it or not…Sardines! Which I don’t even normally like that much! Stephanie Aliotta: My weird pregnancy cravings were peas and Oreo cookies. Not together of course, but I had to have those things in the house at all times. Kristi Anzalone: I wanted everything pumpkin! Pumpkin latte, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies! Tina Nicholas: First pregnancy was meats, lots of meat. Second was Thanksgiving food. Thank God for Boston Market. Third was Mexican. A fajita and burrito hit the spot. But with all three I loved fresh fruit but couldn’t eat salad or pickles. Paige Starita: Egg salad! I never in my life had tried egg salad; the smell always put me off. Once I was pregnant, I really wanted to try it. It quickly became a must have meal. After pregnancy? I never wanted it again!

POWER FOOD Wheat germ is an often forgotten power food that is a fantastic addition to prenatal women’s diets. The nutrients in wheat germ help to boost the value of everyday meals whether used as an addition to top yogurt, cereal, or oatmeal – or when used within recipes, liked mixed up in a smoothie or used to replace less nutrient-dense ingredients like flour. Plus, it tastes great with a warm, nutty flavor.

Here are some of the many benefits of wheat germ: Help prevent birth defects – Folic acid, found in wheat germ, is critical for good prenatal nutrition and helping to prevent birth defects. Growth and development – Necessary for proper growth and development, zinc helps our bodies with hundreds of functions like helping wound heals, DNA synthesis and proper cell division. It also helps us with immunity by fighting off viruses.

Stay fueled – Expectant moms need to keep their bodies fueled, and not with empty calories. Add wheat germ to smoothies, yogurt or oatmeal for a quick recharge and to help you feel fuller longer with 2 grams of fiber per serving. Source your energy – Thiamin found in wheat germ is an important B vitamin helping convert carbohydrates you eat throughout the day into energy. BEHAVIOR

>>> TAMING TEMPER TANTRUMS

hile we hate temper tantrums because they make us feel uncomfortable, powerless, and sometimes angry, they should not be perceived as something negative. Tantrums are inevitable and a normal part of a child’s development. They are a regular part of a toddler’s life and can also occur in older children. Unlike adults, children do not have the same inhibitions or control – and they have not learned the tools to handle the triggers that lead to tantrums.

W

What is a tantrum? A tantrum can range from whining and crying to screaming, kicking, hitting, and even breath holding. Because kids' temperaments vary dramatically – so some kids may experience regular tantrums, whereas others have them rarely. But they do happen and it is up to the parent to handle them. Why do tantrums occur? They happen for a variety of reasons, most often when WHILE IT’S HARD TO DO, YOU MUST TRY TO REMAIN CALM DURING TEMPER TANTRUMS. the child is tired, hungry, uncomfortable, angry or just seeking attention. This frustration is unavoidable since toddlers do not have the But mostly tantrums are the result of kids' frustration with the world. language skills to make the world work the way they want it to.They are They want to do a lot of things that their little bodies and growing still learning how people, objects, and their own bodies work in any minds won’t allow them to do. How to limit tantrums? 1. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep. 2. Children need to eat a nutritionally balanced diet at regular intervals throughout the day. Limit sugar, and say no to soda. 3. Children like to feel in control. So anything from choosing an outfit to eating, give your child two choices, this makes them feel empowered and in control but ultimately you’re getting the result you want. 4. When you can’t give a choice (for example; when you need to leave the house, a play date, or turn off the television), preempt a tantrum by giving them a 5-minute warning. Children find it hard to shift gears quickly, so by letting them know “you have 5 minutes and then it’s time to leave” you give them time to digest and accept what’s going to happen next. For younger children or children that find it hard to transition you may need to count down by the minute, “5 minutes left until we leave, 4...,3...,2...,1 minute left until we leave, time to go”. 5. Be consistent and establish limits. How to handle tantrums? 1. Do not feed your child’s temper tantrum by giving them attention when they meltdown. Ignore the tantrum as much as possible. Once your child sees their tantrums have no effect, they will become shorter in length and less frequent. 2. Do not hold them or try to calm them during a tantrum. Leave them wherever it takes place, providing it’s safe to do so. If not, move them to a safe place and then leave them. 3. Do not try to reason with your child. When they are in the throws of a tantrum they are not going to listen to what you’re saying. Wait until they calm down before you talk to them. 4. Let them know that as soon as they calm down you are there for them but until then you can’t help them. While it is hard to do, you must remain calm during tantrums. Stay cool. Do not get angry or upset. We are all human, but it’s important that your child does not see that this negative behavior riles you. You need to remain in control. If your child sees your frustration or anger, the situation will become worse for both you and the child. Take a deep breath and let the tantrum play out. After the storm. There is an end to the storm. And even though all is calm, do not reward your child by giving into their demands. It’s better to praise your child for settling down. When the tantrum is over, this is the time to talk about what happened and let your child know that they are loved, no matter what. By Emma Jenner, child development and behavioral specialist and author of Keep Calm and Parent On: A Guilt-Free Approach to Raising Children by Asking More from Them and Doing Less.

Swallowing water can be fatal hours after leaving the pool rowning is a danger any time of the year and wherever water is present. Instances of drowning escalate in the summer, when more people are apt to spend time in the pool or at the seaside. But drownings can occur year-round, and young children are at the greatest risk of drowning.

D

While many people are familiar with the risk factors that lead to drowning, many have never heard of secondary drowning, a related condition that can occur hours after leaving the water. According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death across the globe, accounting for almost 400,000 deaths annually. When a person drowns, he or she takes water into their larynx and lungs, which is known as aspiration. Lack of oxygen in the body causes bodily systems to shut down, and cardiac arrest and brain damage can result. Secondary drowning, also known as dry drowning or delayed drowning, is a post-immersion respiratory syndrome. It occurs when water or another fluid has entered the lungs but has not caused enough initial trauma to result in fatal drowning. However, water that

has gotten inside the lungs may cause damage to the inside surface of the organ, collapse alveoli and cause a hardening of the lungs that reduces the ability to exchange air. The body may also retaliate against the foreign water by drawing more fluid into the lungs. Over time, the lungs will suffocate themselves, which is why dry drowning can occur hours after exiting the water. Children tend to be more prone to dry drowning than adults. Parents are urged to keep careful watch over children who experienced distress in the water, which may have resulted in the inhalation of fluid. Furthermore, the children who are most at risk for dry drowning are those with known breathing or lung problems, including underdeveloped lungs or asthma. The following are potential indicators of secondary drowning. Prompt action should be taken if any of these signs are noticed after an adult or child leaves the water. Persistent cough: Anyone who has swallowed water will cough and sputter as the body attempts to naturally expel the water. But persistent coughing that lasts long after the water has been breathed in may be indicative of water aspiration in the lungs. Confusion: Difficulty understanding verbal instructions or not being able to form words or thoughts may be a symptom of dry drowning. Pain: Chest pain is a strong indicator of water aspiration. Trouble breathing: Difficulty breathing long after a person has been swimming may indicate secondary drowning.

If you notice any symptoms of dry drowning, take the person exhibiting those symptoms to the hospital, as this is not something that can be treated at home. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, a person would only have to inhale four ounces of water to drown and even less to injure his lungs enough to become a victim of secondary drowning. Emergency room physicians can remove residual water from the lungs and administer lifesaving oxygen. Although not all instances of swallowing water will result in dry drowning, it is beneficial to understand and learn to recognize secondary drowning symptoms so fast action can be taken if necessary.

Breast Milk Is the Best Milk Nature designed human milk especially for human babies, and it has many advantages over formula. Did you know that your milk contains just the right balance of nutrients, contained in a form most easily used by the baby's immature body systems? And because it was developed for your baby, your milk is the gentlest. Medical authorities, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, strongly recommend breastfeeding. I have counseled mothers for over thirty years, explaining the many reasons why breast milk is the best milk for babies.

Breastfeeding has also been associated with higher IQ scores in later childhood. What's more, the physical closeness, skin-to-skin touching, and eye contact all help your baby bond with you and feel secure. Breastfed infants are more likely to gain the right amount of weight as they grow rather than become overweight children. The AAP says breastfeeding also plays a role in the prevention of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). It's been thought to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers as well, but more research is needed.

2½ through adult

Sandy Osgood, DEA Certified

Making the decision to breastfeed is a personal matter. It's also one that's likely to draw strong opinions from friends and family. But you and your baby are unique, and the decision is up to you. August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month - Educate yourself and be the advocate for you and your baby.

What Are the Benefits of Breastfeeding for Your Baby? Breast milk provides the perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat – everything your baby needs to grow. And it's provided in a form more easily digested than infant formula. Breast milk contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding lowers your baby's risk of having asthma or allergies. Plus, babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first 6 months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea. They also have fewer hospitalizations and trips to the doctor.

Choosing to Breastfeed

There are also many benefits to mothers. Breastfeeding burns extra calories, so it can help you lose pregnancy weight faster. It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth. Breastfeeding also lowers your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. The first few days after birth, your breasts make the ideal "first milk" called colostrum. Although Colostrum is a thin liquid, it adequately meets your baby's nutritional needs as your ‘mature milk’ arrives.

Colostrum helps a newborn's digestive tract develop and prepare itself for digestion. First-time mom Catherine Valenzano, made up her mind to breastfeed months before her daughter, Isabella, was born. “After birth, my first attempt at breastfeeding was slightly uncomfortable. Learning how to guide my daughter to latch took practice and I experienced soreness at first. The lactation consultant put my mind at ease by explaining what to expect and reassuring me to not beat myself up if it doesn't go perfectly the first few days. " Motherhood can be extremely stressful for new moms. Not only are you healing from labor and often sleep deprived, but you are now solely responsible for a new life. It is an overwhelming time, but trust in nature. Once you learn the proper techniques including guiding your baby to latch properly, breastfeeding will become easier. Building your confidence is so important. Know that you can do this. Images of mothers breastfeeding their babies make it look simple – but most women need some help. It can come from a nurse, doctor, family member, or friend, and it helps mothers get over possible bumps in the road. Reach out to friends, family, and your doctor with any questions you may have. Often the women in your life have had those same questions. Only a few medications should not be taken while breastfeeding, and sometimes a safe substitute medication is available. Talk with your doctor or a lactation consultant to discuss breastfeeding and what is best for your baby and you. Educate yourself by attending breastfeeding classes, contact support groups such as La Leche League and utilize the resources available at Richmond University Medical Center. RUMC'S Lactation Support Center offers consultation services and resources for new mothers having difficulties with breastfeeding. For more information, call 718-818-4375.

In the Era of Over-sharing, it’s not surprising that parents post photos of their kids on social media. What’s truly startling is the popularity of something that has been called, for better or worse, “kid-shaming.”

WHAT A SHAME!

The idea of taking a photo of a sign hanging around a loved one’s neck seems to have started with pets. Maybe it is funny to see dogs, cats and even hamsters who seem to be confessing their “sins,” but when children are the subject of these photos, many viewers find themselves cringing instead of chuckling. Some “shaming” photos are clearly intended to be entertaining. In a contemporary version of “Kids say (and do) the darndest things,” parents of toddlers or even infants post ostensibly cute pictures of little ones holding messages about potty accidents or other childish forms of misbehavior. In other cases, parents seem to hope that online shaming will be an effective form of discipline. Some parents, frustrated by unruly teens, have updated The Scarlet Letter by posting photos of young people holding signs describing infractions ranging from stealing and cheating to back talk and breaking curfew. Although kid-shaming photos may seem extreme, they raise serious questions about when it’s appropriate to expose children to the scrutiny of social media. Here are questions worth asking before you post ANY photo of your child. What’s my motivation? Parenthood can be frustrating and lonely. Connecting with other parents—on the playground, at the sidelines of soccer games--is a time-honored way to relieve stress. After kibbutzing with other parents, most people return to the challenges of raising children with more perspective and better balance. Social media may seem like a variation on this theme, and posting a funny photo of a child may temporarily relieve adult feelings of embarrassment, irritation or isolation. The difference, of course, is that social media throws an unwilling or oblivious child into the spotlight, inviting laughter, judgment and even ridicule. When you’re tempted to post a photo of your child, stop for a moment and examine your own feelings. Are you acting out of love for your child? Or is posting a way to meet your own (very legitimate) needs for attention or support? If it’s all about you, consider other ways of getting what you need. Phone a friend. Join a parenting group. Read a book on child development. Or keep a (private!) journal. How would I feel if I were the one in the photo? Everyone makes mistakes. In healthy families, people can count on loved ones not to blab about their weaknesses. Even the cutest kid-shaming photos violate this trust. Before posting, try to imagine—in detail—how you

would feel if someone (spouse? child? friend? parent?) shared an image of you at your worst or with a sign around your neck proclaiming your most embarrassing secret. Will this make my child feel ashamed or humiliated? Humiliation is one of the quickest ways to undermine trust in a relationship. Overwhelmed parents may be tempted to try it as a discipline strategy because shame can produce short-term compliance. Unfortunately, child development experts agree that the long-term consequences of being called out in public are damaging. Public punishment makes a child feel defined by his or her mistake, so it’s likely to lead to feelings of isolation, self-hatred, hostility or even revenge. In contrast, effective discipline helps children understand how they can make amends for mistakes in the past and make better choices in the future. What if this goes viral? Most of what’s posted online disappears without a trace. There are, however, rather conspicuous exceptions. Before sharing a photo or video of your child, think about what would happen to your kid—and you—if that image turns out to be one of the random items that gets shared by millions of other people. When a post takes on a life of its own and becomes associated with a child’s name, it’s likely to be the first thing that shows up in future searches by everyone from employers to romantic partners. Do you really want your child—or your parenting—to be defined by one foolish moment? Do I want my child to follow this example? Most parents teach their kids not to embarrass much less mock other people. Those lessons seem rather lame when kids discover parents have posted photos that mortify or make fun of them. In this respect, kid-shaming resembles teasing. You may say you’re “just kidding” but often there’s an undercurrent of hostility that makes it difficult to distinguish teasing from bullying. To raise kids who are caring and respectful, parents have to be models of caring, respectful behavior online as well as off.

Will this post improve your relationship with your child? Some images do strengthen relationships because they affirm a family’s values—pride in a child’s accomplishment, a shared sense of humor, times of genuine togetherness. When it seems important to post pictures of your family, seek out photos that will reinforce what’s good about your connection with your kid. If you’re uncertain about posting an image, you can, of course, ask your child whether it’s OK to share. When children are too young to answer that question or to anticipate the possible consequences, parents bear the added responsibility of trying to imagine what they might think now as well as in the future. Given what’s at stake, some parents may decide that, when it comes to kids, “under-sharing” is by far the better option.

COVER STORY

A CHANCE:

GIVE

20 Reasons To Try Consistent Classes Don’t be fooled by glittery costumes and false eyelashes—competitive dancers are athletes, who deserve to be taken just as seriously as members of any other team such as soccer, swimming, or track. Dance has multiple benefits—often more than other sports. And yes, dance performed regularly and intensively is both a sport and a multi-sensory art form that may raise your child’s self-esteem. According to the National Registry of Dance Educators, dance provides physical, intellectual, artistic, social and individual benefits that can enrich any dancer’s life. Unlike many sports which are often seasonal, dance practice typically runs all school year or even year-round. Many kids take a variety of sports throughout the year, but dancers tend to take foundational dance classes first and then learn new forms of dance as their skills grow. Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical, Acrobatics, and Hip Hop are the most common forms of dance you will find offered. Dancers learn many helpful, practical skills that carry over naturally into everyday life. If you visit a few dance studios, you will likely find a vibe and set of values that are a good match for your child and family. Here are some of the many benefits of taking consistent dance classes:

1

Increase listening skills. In order to learn, dancers have to hear and absorb verbal instructions from their teachers, often on the fly and often in a variety of ways, which helps children learn to pay attention before, during, and after learning something new.

Observing closely. Another way dancers learn is by watching demonstrations. Dancing is a multi-sensory skill and watching closely is an important part of the learning process, especially for more visual learners.

2

Expanding social circles. Dancers can make new friends in dance class and expand their social circles. Friendships tend to deepen over time and kids who spend a lot of time working on new skills together are likely to form tighter friendships.

3

Growing stronger and more fit. We often think of dancers as dainty and delicate but dancers are stronger than you might think. Regular dancing increases cardiovascular health, builds muscles, and over time, increases physical endurance. In my daughter’s 5th grade classroom, a petite veteran competitive dancer routinely beat the football players at arm wrestling. Dancers need core strength as well as individual muscle strength to leap, turn and twist without injury.

4

5

Gaining musicality and rhythm. Dance can help your child become more musical, even without practicing an instrument. The measured movements kids learn in dance help them intuitively understand and adapt to other kinds of rhythms in life.

Becoming more flexible. Don’t worry if your child is not flexible or agile before beginning dance. Flexibility is something that is approached incrementally, and as a dancer learns and grows they will naturally become more limber.

Teaching teamwork. Dancers often literally depend on each other to lift each other up, to hold each other up, and to work in unison to make a whole. By working hard together, dancers learn to trust each other and the group.

Focusing on following through. Because dance is kinesthetic as well as musical and rhythmic, children who have trouble sitting still in school can concentrate more easily while learning a complete dance movement, which takes considerable concentration, focus, and practice.

Emphasizing a positive attitude. When you smile, the whole world smiles with you, so the saying goes. Like posture, tests have shown that smiling makes you feel better whether you want to feel better or not. The dance studio is a place where your child is reminded to put a best face forward.

6 7

Responding to feedback. Dancers receive ongoing feedback from instructors. The onus is on them to react as graciously as they can and apply the advice so they can improve. This teaches responsiveness and collaboration instead of defensiveness and oversensitivity.

8

Practicing poise. Dance can cure the curse of klutziness. Poise in the practice room will eventually translate into increased body awareness and better motor control outside the Is there studio, as well.

9

Inspiring self-discipline. By teaching mastery of a routine through practice, dancers learn how to aim for a goal and reach it. Repeated over time, this ability to get things accomplished can be applied to any task or healthy habit.

10

Finding opportunities for selfexpression. Although dance is rarely verbal and routines are often choreographed, dancers express themselves artistically through movement, agility, showmanship, poise, and by letting their personalities shine through. Some dances offer a variety of roles and dancers may either be cast in a role or offered a solo based on ability and personality.

11

17

Reducing stress. Life gets bumpy sometimes, even for kids. Dancers who are experiencing stress in life outside the studio, may find that the consistency, focus, and health benefits of dance counterbalance negative effects of any stress in their personal lives. Children experiencing stress typically benefit from expressive outlets for their considerable energy.

Test-driving commitment. Dancers earn dividends on what they invest. When your dancer commits consistently and fully, the payoff is great. Half-hearted or lax engagement typically yields poorer results.

12

Increasing confidence. Dance is multi-sensory, so don’t be surprised if it boosts your child’s confidence in ways you may not anticipate.

13

Acquiring excellent posture. Body language experts have proven that by changing our posture, we can change our attitude and our feelings. Dancers practice excellent posture, which has both short and long-term benefits physiologically and emotionally.

14

Improving body awareness. Dancers’ bodies come in all shapes and sizes and dancers learn that an active, healthy body helps you accomplish your objectives with greater ease no matter what size you are. Dancers learn first-hand the benefits of eating healthy and fueling their bodies.

15

16

Respecting instructors. Parents do not typically coach or volunteer in dance classes. Most instructors are trained and studios expect kids to be respectful towards their teachers. Dancers who treat instructors with admiration tend to get more out of the process than dancers who behave in a disrespectful manner or act out in class, just like in real life.

19

Joining an extended community. Dancers are not just part of a class, they are part of an extended community. A studio is composed of the owner, the instructors, the students, and the parents and families of the students. Dancers learn that they can be a significant part of the whole and still shine as individuals. They can look to others for good examples and also set a good example. They learn, most importantly to work hard, do their best, and still have fun.

It is decided based on each child's need. Some children can wait until they have all permanent dentition whereas others need a phase one treatment earlier to correct things such as a crossbite or a narrow upper jaw.

Roxanne Goodwin Tansey: My daughter got her braces at 10. I've been taking her to the orthodontist when she was 6 years old. Which I think 8 or 9 is a better age to start taking them. You live and learn. I've been told my daughter needed palette expender but my insurance didn't cover so I decided not to get them because I couldn’t afford the very high price. Thank goodness I didn't cause she didn't need them. Now they are saying my 8 year old son needs one. If my son does needs a pallet expender he would get it with braces and my insurance covers that.

Caroline Hanna: When the dentist gives the ok, which usually comes after they loose all the baby teeth. Unless of course there's another medical reason requiring them to get earlier. Jennifer Cioffi: Depends on kid. When they can be responsible for taking care of them.

Rachel Newfield Cugini: There is no right age it all has to do with the teeth. The first visit should be around 8 to see what's going on. My son needed a palette expander so he got that at 9. He got his braces on in July when he was 11 because he only had one more baby tooth. Michele DeSimone: There is a lot of research that supports Orthotropics as a much better option that braces. Kelly O'Donnell Cirillo: My 9 year old is doing the same. He has an expander. It has nothing to do with baby teeth.

Here’s What Common Core Will Change Question: I hear all kinds of good and bad things about Common Core. What is likely to change at my children’s school? – Want to Know Answer: First of all, Common Core is the new state standards initiative preparing America's students for college and a career, as well as making sure that all children are literate in the 21st century in both print and digitally. Almost every state has adopted these standards, which are for English language arts/literacy and math. Implementation of the standards will begin in your children’s school this year. There will also be standardized testing aligned with these new standards. You will notice that the English language arts/literacy curriculum will have a greater emphasis on literacy in history/social studies, science and technical subjects in grades 6-12. You will also notice your children reading more nonfiction. In addition, the standards do require students to read to cite answers, not just rely on their opinions. Plus, students will be required to show that they can listen and speak clearly. Your children will definitely be required to explain concepts and be able to find information primarily from expository texts. And there will be more use of the Internet. In mathematics, there actually will be a considerable change. No longer will teachers be covering as many topics as possible. Instead, teachers will be going into more depth each year in fewer mathematical areas. The idea is to eliminate content that is not helpful. Having students develop a deeper understanding of basic mathematical principles will help them move on to more advanced mathematical topics. You can see exactly what the new standards include for each grade level (K12) by visiting www.corestandards.org.

Helping Young Children Become More Creative Question: How can I help my young children become more creative? – Seeking Creativity Answer: Fostering creativity in children is important. You do this naturally if you provide them with interesting and challenging materials and opportunities. Plus they need to experience the arts and music. Creativity is also developed through giving children free time for unstructured play and limiting time spent watching TV or playing electronic games. The following activities will encourage creativity in young children: 1. Give them an ordinary household item such as a stick, paper clip, or bottle and ask them to imagine other ways that it can be used. For example, a plastic bottle could be a vase, a bowling pin, or a terrarium. 2. Drawing is another way to enhance creativity. Draw a straight or curvy line on a piece of paper and have your children turn it into a familiar object. Or give them a page of circles drawn to different sizes. Have the children see how many objects can be depicted by adding elements to each circle. How to Find out Your Children’s Reading Level Question: I’m not sure that my children are really reading on grade level even though their teachers say they are. Is there any way that I can measure their reading level? – High Standards Answer: Teachers may or may not be able to give you an accurate picture of your children’s true reading levels, as they as well as school districts often have different grade level standards. You can find many websites online that offer tests to determine children's reading levels. One of the most accurate and simple tests for good and poor readers is the San Diego Quick Assessment. You can find it on our dearteacher.com website right on our home page. Remember, bright children should usually be reading above grade level. And do keep up with your children’s progress in reading by using the reading assessment test at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Reading Wordless Books to Preschoolers Question: What is the best way to read a wordless picture book with my 4-year-old daughter? – Want to Do It Right Answer: One of the best ways is to begin the book by looking at its cover. Tell your child the name of the story. Then go through the book looking at the pictures together. Do talk about what you both see in each illustration. The next step is to go back through the book telling the child a story about the pictures. Often after turning a few pages, your young daughter will just take off “reading” the book to you from what she sees.

SCHOOL ANXIETY-FREE

ack to School or Starting School — either way, many children experience separation anxiety when the carefree days of summer are over and school is in session. Change may be difficult for some, but there are a few things you can do to ease your reluctant child into the routine of going to school. Below, Cheri Sterman, Director of Child Development at Crayola, offers her thoughts:

B

• For very young children, use art as a window to understand what they are feeling. Remember that art at this age is not yet realistic looking, but from energetic scribbles, parents can hear their kids’ story and where fears or pride points come to life. • Use colorful schedules and charts to ease morning routines. Encourage your kids to make personal decisions when possible and sketch the decisions or note the agreements you make on a chart as a visual reminder of plans, e.g., clothing choices and bed times.

• New supplies give kids a fresh start to a new year of colorful learning and new friendships – the excitement kids feel while picking out new school supplies generates excitement about going into a new school year. • Start BTS shopping early to avoid stress. Make the day celebratory. Focus on the excitement of being “one year older” and “moving up a grade.” Empower kids to make their own decisions on items not specified by the school supply list. Shopping gives parents the opportunity to talk about the new school year and to bond with their kids. Guide kids to imagine their new classrooms, friends, teachers and subjects and establish a dialog for success before the year begins. • Prepare for the changes to daily routines. Work with your kids to develop a chore chart that includes activities such as packing lunches, reviewing backpacks, and completing homework. Being able to check off completed tasks will help make the new routine more manageable. • Create a homework center. Designate an area in the house (perhaps a corner of the kitchen or in your kids’ room) to be a place where the homework supplies are organized and ready to use. This simple space preparation will relieve tension that can occur on the first nights homework

SIMPLE TIPS CAN MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO SCHOOL LESS STRESSFUL FOR KIDS (AND PARENTS!) is assigned. Add in a few special treats in the way of supplies that remain at home in the homework center. • Make mistakes less stressful by using erasable products. If kids are struggling with multiplication facts or need practice with vocabulary or spelling words--select a dry erase board and dry erase crayons so they can easily practice and erase, building basic skills before taking a school test. • Maximize summer; remember to keep skills fresh to avoid eroding the learning from the prior year. Enjoy creative experiences as a family, weaving learning into fun. Ask your kids to draw your favorite part of the day either in a journal with colored pencils or on the driveway with sidewalk chalk. After reading a book, have your kid draw a new cover that depicts a different ending and then tell their revised story. Visually expressing ideas is an important skill to develop and helps kids organize their thoughts and communicate with others. • If travel is part of your summer plans, have your kid draw a map of the places you'll visit, calculate the miles, and sketch some sights along the way. AUGUST 2014

www.siparent.com

Ninjas, Boy Bands, Ice Cream, and Other Summer Fun For me, August is the month of ninjas. Yes, you read that correctly. I turn 11 this month and have decided that will be my birthday theme. You see, I love ninjas… they are sleek, stealth, and strong, so what better way to ring in the new exciting age than with a ninja-themed cake, banners, lollipops, the works?! While it may not be your typical 11-year-old girl birthday choice, I’m not typical, which – to me – makes it all the more exciting. My best friends are pretty much used to my unique choices by now, so I have a feeling they will enjoy it even if it is nontraditional! Of course, I do fall into the “most 11-year-old girls like them” category when it comes to my big birthday gift. Mom and Dad got me tickets to the One Direction concert. The day before my birthday, August 4th, will certainly be one to remember. This isn’t my first concert, but it’ll surely be my favorite. I absolutely cannot wait. I’m going to sing all the songs and scream until my mom goes deaf or until I lose my voice, whatever comes first. Zayn and Harry are my favorites... their hair and their eyes are so adorable, as well as the way that they sing. I could just go on and on about them, something my mom says is a sign of how I’m definitely growing up. As much as I enjoy One Direction, they’re not (yet) my whole world, which is why I’m also really looking forward to spending the other part of my birthday week on Long Beach Island. One of my favorite parts of LBI is celebrating my special day at the Showplace Ice Cream Parlor. The servers there put on a big singing show and Daddy always gets chosen to sing some

funny lyrics in a wild costume hat. They also have the best ice cream, which you can pretty much tell by the long line we always have to wait on to get in. It’s worth it, though. Ice cream is always worth it! Another highlight of these hot, fun months is looking forward to the 6th grade. For real! In our house, getting ready for school and organizing all our school supplies is a real thrill, believe it or not. Mom says it must run in the family because she’s loved doing that for as long as she remembers. There’s just something about stocking up on pencils, new notebooks, clean pink erasers, etc., that brings a smile to all our faces! I’m going into the 6th grade with a really good attitude because I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Since I attend a private school, we’re there until the 8th grade, so I already know and love most of my teachers. All in all, it’s been a really great summer. For the 4th of July, we went to my mom’s cousin’s house in Virginia and pretty much stayed in the pool the entire weekend. Fireworks are legal down there, so we were also treated to a big show with lots of colorful and loud explosions. I also officially declared myself the “Ping-Pong Champion,” thanks to all the time my cousins and I spent playing it in the garage. We’ve also had a few beach days in Ocean Grove, spent too many hours in the pool to count, did tons of crafts, had mini adventures at a bunch of parks, and even took a road trip to visit the Amish in Lancaster, PA – it’s so much fun to see how they live. Good times, good times! Here’s wishing everyone an amazingly good time-filled rest of summer!

SPEECH PATHOLOGY

FIND THE FUN IN FEEDING is a twelve-week feeding program, utilizing the SOS Approach to Feeding. It utilizes a non-invasive developmental model, that teaches your child how to interact, tolerate and eat a variety of foods in a non-stressful, supportive environment. Parent/caregiver training is a key part of this program to foster success at home. A multidisciplinary approach is also utilized, incorporating the expertise of a feeding therapist, an occupational therapist, a nutritionist, a pediatrician or any relevant professional working with your child.
