Fire Bar at The Otesaga Resort in Cooperstown, NY

12 Septemberz October2020

Locations That Motivate and Inspire In light of current circumstances, many planners are seeking places and spaces that will both inspire and motivate attendees as they begin a return to more in-person meetings. Several destinations provide inspirational settings, from mountains to beaches to battlefields to ballparks. People draw their motivation and inspiration from many sources. Here are just a few of the places that can serve to lift groups up while also bringing them the confidence and comfort they are seeking during these uncertain times. porch that is the perfect setting for an event or to relax and enjoy magnificent sunsets. There’s much to see and do outdoors at The Otesaga, too, including biking, hiking, tennis and the resort’s Leatherstocking Golf Course. Customized golf clinics are available tailored to the group’s team building goals.

Cooperstown, NY Cooperstown has a little bit of everything to satisfy any niche, explains Cassandra Harrington, executive director, This Is Cooperstown. “Enjoy the fresh air and picturesque view of Otsego Lake, made famous by James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The Deerslayer. Take in the history of Cooper’s birthplace and stroll through our charming village as you relax and unwind. Enjoy the foods of the region as most of our restaurants highlight local ingredients. After your stay you’ll feel refreshed and inspired by the tranquility of Cooperstown.” Filled with history and nostalgic charm, Cooperstown offers attractions like the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, The Farmers’ Museum, and Fly Creek Cider Mill. Other things to do that could help inspire and motivate include a scenic hike or renting a pavilion by the lake at Glimmerglass State Park, or traveling the Susquehanna River by canoe, kayak or stand up paddle board. When it comes to food and drink, Brewery Ommegang is a great place for enjoying a brew with some Belgium frites on their covered patio. Alternatively, opt to grab a to-go meal from a local restaurant and picnic at one of the area’s many parks. L.M. Townsend Catering of Templeton Hall offers a wide selection of catered meal options, as well.

As Cooperstown is home to the world-renowned National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the resort can arrange for groups to enjoy several unique and inspiring experiences at the museum, too. In the warmer months, and as a fun team building activity, groups can play a baseball game at historic Doubleday Field (and The Otesaga can even arrange for a pitcher, such as MLB players like Phil Niekro or Goose Gossage), followed by a specialty “Ballpark Classic” lunch that includes hot dogs, burgers, Cracker Jack and more. For art and culture aficionados, The Otesaga can arrange for groups to enjoy guided tours and activities at the outdoor Farmers’ Museum where they can host an event on the grounds, as well. For the health and safety of both visitors and residents alike, Main Street Cooperstown has instated a “Masks on Main” policy in which everyone is encouraged to mask up both indoors and out. During the spring, summer and early fall guests love strolling the village’s delightful Main Street, which is lined with interesting boutiques, galleries, and various restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

Just steps from downtown Cooperstown and on the banks of picturesque Otsego Lake, The Otesaga Resort Hotel offers one of the most elegant and sophisticated meeting venues in upstate New York. By not visiting in person, meeting attendees will miss out on discovering the charm of Cooperstown, nicknamed “America’s Most Perfect Village.” Meeting planners can work with The Otesaga’s team to create customized packages and unique activities in partnership with Cooperstown’s top attractions. At Lake Otsego, groups can enjoy various outdoor water activities. They also can take advantage of the best view in town from the property’s wraparound, airy 14 Septemberz October2020

Atlantic City, NJ Atlantic City remains a destination that provides plenty of opportunities to motivate and inspire. “Atlantic City has inspired visitors for decades,” explains Sandi Harvey, vice president of sales, Meet AC. “Our wide-open spaces, beach and boardwalk are just a few of the reasons. The sheer size and scope of our casinos, venues and outdoor attractions are also a draw to get visitors motivated and inspired. Get your exercise in on our beaches, jog or ride a bike on our world-famous boardwalk, or enjoy a round of golf at renowned courses. Experiences await in Atlantic City.” “It’s extremely important to provide a sense of comfort during any visit to a destination,” she continues. “Now, more than ever, visitors and attendees want to get back to normal and some are expecting a new normal with a little familiarity. It

also is very important to provide a sense of safety and protocols. Our beach provides a sense of comfort and stress relief from a natural resource standpoint. Meet AC continues to offer information daily on what's new, open and current in Atlantic City.” “The culinary scene in Atlantic City offers a wide range of opportunities and a diverse budget appeal,” notes Harvey. “We have seen a pivot to our al fresco dining and restaurant owners have been extremely creative, while focused on the required safety guidelines.” Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and back bays, Atlantic City boasts ample water activities such as boating, fishing, parasailing, surfing, sightseeing tours along with other recreation and activities. New Jersey’s tallest lighthouse, The Absecon Lighthouse at 171-feet, takes 228 steps to the top that are well worth the climb for the scenic view.

On the world-famous boardwalk and just steps from Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City, historic Steel Pier is sure to channel the inner kid of attendees with its amusements and games. The Wheel on the pier boasts 40 climate-controlled gondolas that offer sweeping views of the city skyline and ocean, and it is the third largest such wheel in the U.S. Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City provides yet another source of inspiration and motivation for many – music – and the resort is dedicated to helping people find their rhythm and keep the beat going with every meeting, event and group outing. “Since our grand opening in 2018, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City has delivered best-inclass entertainment in the region, but it is our service and commitment to excellence that is our greatest differentiator and an inspiration

point for guests,” proclaims Shelley Williams, vice president of sales for the hotel-casino. “Each team member desires to live by our company mottos of Love All-Serve All, Take Time To Be Kind, and Save The Planet. Through these, we work to improve lives, help communities, and sustain the earth, infusing the power of music into all we do, wherever we are.” Atlantic City also continues to do its part to innovate and stay attractive to regional visitors, she adds. The arrival of Hard Rock and the introduction of sports betting in 2018 helped to spark a wave of renovations, refurbishments, expansions and new openings throughout the city. “This is particularly true of the ‘North Beach’ section of the boardwalk,” notes Williams, “which has developed into the city’s cultural epicenter with brand-new eateries overlooking the ocean. The addition

of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and the neighboring Ocean Casino Resort, along with other new offerings helped to reinvigorate and add to the excitement to this part of town.

available for roundtables, discussions and appointments that are attractive to groups and social settings.”

Hard Rock’s Atlantic City location is attractive to customers from drivemarkets, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, and even Massachusetts, Williams explains, “but it's our commitment to providing musical entertainment 365 days a year that is the true standout.”

When it comes to dining, the legendary Hard Rock Cafe offers an indoor/outdoor dining option (including a private space for groups) with a sophisticated urban vibe and classic American menu. They have additional outdoor dining options, including the Hard Rock Beach Bar, the Balcony Bar, Sugar Factory and the all-new Fish & Co.

She asserts that Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Atlantic City is motivated by music and that it is ingrained in their offerings for groups. “With a vast collection of music memorabilia, often touted as one of the largest collections in the Northeast, we are able to offer unique music-centric activities such as trivia and scavenger hunts and selfguided tours. As a resort destination, we have non-traditional venues

“For our reopening in July, we adopted Safe + Sound protocols that were developed in accordance with guidelines provided by Hard Rock International. Key highlights include: mandated masks and temperature checks for guests and team members; a new Safe + Sound clean team; increased quality of air circulation; and a partnership with AtlantiCare for contact tracing, training, telehealth and more,” Williams assures.

Pocono Mountains, PA The Pocono Mountains has been a destination welcoming groups and visitors alike for decades and continues to be an outstanding choice that both motivates and inspires. A four-county region that boasts unrivaled charm within 2,400square miles, it is famous for its outstanding resorts, natural scenic beauty, 150 lakes and quaint, historic towns. A myriad of nature-filled activities will bring out the water adventurer, outdoor explorer, hiker or botanist in visitors. Tour a living history museum, unwind at a brew pub, ski the slopes of a resort in winter, and, in warmer months, stretch out on a sandy beach at a lake or float along on a river. The varied landscape inspires a range of experiences, from the private and peaceful to the bold and exhilarating. Cottages and condos and hotels promote restful mountain moments while waterparks and adventure courses offer excitement around every turn.

Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the hospitality industry in the Poconos continues to offer warm, personalized and safe service. In fact, four area resorts are repeat recipients of the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award. These include: The Lodge at Woodloch; Skytop Lodge; Mount Airy Casino Resort; and French Manor Inn and Spa. Masks are mandatory in all public spaces in Pennsylvania, and everyone is asked to continue to practice physical distancing. In fact, more than 150 businesses have pledged to sign and support the Pocono Promise - a voluntarily vow to follow certain guidelines to protect residents, employees and customers. Its guidelines include aggressive cleaning protocols, health surveys for staff before starting their shift, special training, and using personal protective equipment when possible. In return, businesses ask employees and customers to practice physical distancing and stay home if they feel sick.

Valley Forge/Montgomery County, PA For those who find their inspiration and motivation through history, the Valley Forge area in Montgomery County, PA has much to offer. Montco, as it is known, is rich not only in history, but also in outdoor activities like dining al fresco, golf, and almost 100 miles of trails for biking, hiking, and running - all just 18 miles from downtown Philadelphia. Here, groups have the freedom to explore different adventures, taste varied cuisines and tackle unknown challenges. Valley Forge National Historical Park is a true group destination. Those visiting Washington's Headquarters will enjoy the ability to explore the area based on their own interests and time constraints. The park was created to both preserve history and tell the story of the Continental Army during the winter of 1777-78, but through the years it has grown to be much more. The Valley Forge Tourism and Convention Board has launched a virtual visitors center to help in planning and guiding visits to the area during COVID-19. This webpage was developed by park rangers to provide information similar to what would be shared at the actual Visitor Center, which is currently closed.

18 Septemberz October2020

Valley Forge National Historical Park is just the beginning of any historic journey through Montgomery County, however, as groups also can walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War soldiers, visit the home of John James Audubon, and experience the grandeur of Bryn Athyn. Outdoor activities around the Valley Forge area include a visit to Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, plus an array of opportunities for boaters, kayakers and anyone who loves to get out on the water. For those who enjoy hiking and biking, nearly 90-miles of trails traverse the county, offering endless challenges and the opportunity to explore the Philadelphia suburbs and countryside. For casino enthusiasts, Valley Forge Casino Resort is the region’s only full-service gaming resort.

Each of these destinations and venues are helping to not only provide motivation and inspiration, but also a sense of normalcy for groups throughout the region during these challenging times. From quaint villages and sports legends to mountain settings to historic sites to music and more at the shore, planners have a wide range of options available.

Bleisure Travel: Drive-To Destinations As groups resume in-person meetings and travel, there is an increased desire to stay closer to home, but also to allow for more opportunities among attendees to relax and de-stress once they have arrived. Drive-to destinations throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern U.S. offer plenty of options for those who wish to incorporate some leisure into their upcoming business trips. Here are a few places and spaces with plenty of activities - or opportunities to relax - along with a few thoughts from the American Bus Association (ABA) on the resumption of travel for both business and leisure. Peter Pantuso, president and CEO of the ABA, says that taking time for oneself, especially for travel, “is always good for the soul.” He notes that a number of studies have shown that even taking a day or two off can help to reduce stress, cut the risk of a heart attack and improve productivity. “These are trying times and everyone should find something that brings them joy or a break from the news and daily grind – traveling is a great way to do that.” The best way to add a few days of relaxation and enjoyable activities when traveling for work, Pantuso asserts, is to reach out to the local CVB or tourism office in the city or state of the business trip. “They will be able to tell you what is open, what is great for groups or for solo travelers, and they may also be able to get you discounted rates on events and activities if you are planning for a group. Coming in a day or two early or staying a day or two later, and taking a local sightseeing trip can help you experience your destination.” Taking the time to enjoy new settings when away on a business in a new city or location can be an exciting aspect to any trip, he notes. And now is a great time to rediscover destinations within 200-400 miles, too, he adds, especially those that are accessible by motorcoach. While many attractions may not be getting the volume of visitors they did pre-COVID-19, a visit to them is fun, appreciated, and helpful to the regional economy. Another benefit of staying and enjoying destinations closer to home is that it can be more economical to do so, as well. “The motorcoach industry is a safe and affordable way to travel,” Pantuso reassures. Regardless of how attendees ultimately arrive at their destination, each of the following venues and locations has much to offer by way of added experiences and are ideal for fun, relaxation and relief from stress. The Catskill Mountains, NY www.greatnortherncatskills.com The Catskills are an outdoor recreation destination in New York State offering hiking in Catskill Park, mountain biking at trail networks like the Round Top Trail Network, boating on the Hudson River, fly fishing, plus skiing and snowboarding in winter. Most of its restaurants are open and able to host guests indoors, though there are many curbside pickup and delivery options, as well. It’s always best to call ahead to double check with attractions, stores or restaurants to find out if they have any special restrictions or guidelines in place. Boat tours on the Hudson River are great choice for groups, while canoeing and kayaking are great for solo adventurers. Book a group mountain biking lesson at Windham Mountain Bike Center or hit the trails and enjoy a relaxing ride through nature.

Delaware County, PA visitdelcopa.com Since April, Delaware County has been experiencing a slow but steady rise in hotel occupancy – and the majority of the business comes from both business and leisure travelers. The most significant contributor to this increased occupancy comes from the leisure travel sector – with visitors coming from western PA and neighboring states within a two-hour drive or less. It also includes a significant number of local visitors from Philadelphia, Wilmington, DE and the surrounding suburbs. Representatives from the Home 2 Suites in Chadds Ford, Holiday Inn and Suites at Drexelbrook, the Hilton Garden Inn at Newtown Square, and Staybridge Suites Wilmington/Brandywine Valley all note that they have seen an uptick in “staycationers” who want to get out of the house, but stay fairly local in a familiar place where they feel safe.

Swarthmore College’s “Scott Arboretum”

Notes Jon Beretsky, GM of the Comfort Inn and Suites in Glen Mills, “Our entire team is excited and proud to provide all travelers with a safe and fun ‘first step’ back into normalcy.” According to Steve Byrne, executive director of Visit Delco, PA, “Delco hotels are following a combination of hotel brand safety recommendations, state and local mandates, and CDC safety guidelines,” adding that “most of our properties have a smaller footprint, averaging between 80 and 120 rooms, where physical distancing and personal attention are much easier.” Barbara Lehman, director of communications for the tourism agency, suggests that “in stressful times like this, where people have literally been cut off for months from interaction with peers at work, from spending time with friends, and from doing everyday activities like going to the gym, or a favorite coffee bar – people feel a yearning to go somewhere different and do something fun and familiar.” Lou Marrocco, director of events for the bureau, adds, “We also are working with county officials to plan a nostalgic Drive-in Movie Night at Rose Tree Park in September, and, if we get the green light, we’ll have lots of spaces for both residents and ‘staycationers’ at Delco hotels.” In addition to Rose Tree Park in Media, Delco boasts other outdoor options like Ridley Creek State Park and the historic Newlin Grist Mill, which offer unique settings plus picnic tables for sharing conversation and a boxed lunch (from one of the county’s many local eateries). Golf courses have always been popular places for talking business, and Delco has four public courses that are open for tee times - some offer outdoor dining, too. Another option is Swarthmore College’s “Scott Arboretum” campus, which has several outdoor seating areas plus an educational atmosphere perfect for extolling the virtues of partnership and progress. “Delco’s hospitality industry is committed to offering travelers a safe, personal, and fun experience,” Lehman asserts. Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square Lancaster County Convention Center, Lancaster, PA Lancasterconventioncenter.com It’s important to maintain a healthy balance, especially with the ongoing challenges that have required people to stay in place for so long. One way to accomplish such a balance is by incorporating additional components to a group meeting or experience. Food and beverage outlets are open, too, including Plough with its outdoor seating and The Exchange, the property’s open-air rooftop bar, along with the on-site Starbucks. Norfolk, VA visitnorfolktoday.com Norfolk’s urban, waterfront downtown and warm weather in the fall and early spring months allows for a plethora of outdoor and water activities year-round. Some of the most popular include Rover Cruises on the Elizabeth River, rooftop dining along Norfolk’s historic Restaurant Row at Leone’s or Grain, Battleship Wisconsin tours, and exploring Norfolk’s wide collection of glass art at the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Glass Light Hotel and Gallery. For military meetings, groups enjoy Naval Base tours and networking with beers at the Brick Anchor Brew House. If a meeting planner’s goal is for the attendees to become re-inspired, activities such as glass blowing demonstrations at the Chrysler Museum Perry Glass Studio and artistic Italian fare in Varia’s private event room behind hidden bookcases are great options. During individual free time, attendees can focus on leisure activities that fit into their own personal lifestyle like biking along the waterfront, exploring cultural sites such as the MacArthur Memorial, or eating at some of Norfolk’s unique restaurants. A smaller - yet still urban - city, Norfolk is walkable with an abundance of outdoor activities and spaces that allow for spreading out. A safe destination where those who wish to travel for business or leisure can thoroughly enjoy themselves while dining on eclectic outdoor patios, relax in their hotel room with waterfront views, or feel the sea breeze while sailing on the Elizabeth River.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

Richmond, VA visitrichmondva.com Building leisure time into business trips helps visitors relax and gather inspiration for their ultimate purpose, and the Richmond Region offers inspiration around every corner. Museums and attractions are safely welcoming guests with timed-ticket reservation systems, mask requirements and other safety measures. With the James River at the region’s center, outdoor activities abound for all ages and skill levels. The VA Capital Trail guides cyclists through some breathtaking scenery. Belle Isle offers a slice of wildlife in downtown Richmond. At one-mile circumference, it’s the perfect spot for a short hike or picnic along the banks of the James. Travel Safety RVA (visitrichmondva.com/travel-safety) provides detailed information about hotel guidelines, attraction safeguards, restaurant protocols and transit precautions. Richmond Region Tourism also offers playinrva.com, a new resource featuring attractions, restaurants and businesses that are offering exclusive promotions to visitors in the region for meetings and events.

Groups coming to Richmond have hosted meetings and events at a variety of unique venues, including Top Golf, Richmond Raceway, and Henricus Historical Park. The region’s arts and culture offerings are abundant and provide peaceful settings for leisure time. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden both boast year-round beauty. Experiences are available for all visitors, regardless of the length of their stay. Even with just an hour, they can embark on a selfguided tour of the Richmond Slave Trail and the Liberty Trail, which intersect downtown. For those with free time after lunch, the James River offers stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking or rafting, while a leisurely stroll across the river via the T. Tyler Potterfield Bridge provides impressive views. Individuals and planners might also consider mindfulness sessions along the river at Brown’s Island, an afternoon meeting in the quaint Town of Ashland, or an after-hours tasting at a winery in New Kent County.

Part of the appeal of attending a meeting or conference is experiencing a new destination, making some new friends, and leaving worries behind, observes Elizabeth Joyner, director of sales for Visit Annapolis. This is especially true during stressful times. After months of quarantining and limited mobility, individuals are looking for a change of scenery in a safe and welcoming environment. Good times shared – even in a physically distant manner – help drive home the message that all will be well again, she says. Now, more than ever, leisure activities are an essential component of any business trip. They help clear the mind, allay fears, build community, and bolster confidence in a time of uncertainty. A refreshed, rejuvenated individual is better able to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. 30 Septemberz October2020

Outdoor Spaces for Dining and Gatherings

Circumstances have caused planners to rotate, swerve, spin and twirl away from many traditional meeting scenarios and move most programs toward outdoor spaces for now. As a result, a number of venues have responded by offering additional outdoor spaces for hosting functions and group dining opportunities. "Hosting events outdoors, when available, offers a few advantages, explains Sharon DeFelices, CMP, corporate event strategist and owner of Mosiac Meetings and Events. “One, it allows for some variety in a multi-day corporate event. By bringing events to the outdoors, you can highlight all that a venue has to offer. And you reduce the fatigue that people might feel by moving from indoor space to indoor space for events. This also allows for appropriate cleaning and sanitation of your indoor spaces."

"In the current COVID-19 world,” she continues, “an outdoor event also allows for larger groups to gather than might be able to attend an indoor event. For instance, a wedding at a venue that will only permit a 25 percent capacity for indoor events can accommodate a larger guest count in outdoor space." Not only do these outdoor spaces allow for higher capacities, but they do so without sacrificing safety measures. Adequate distancing is easily achievable outside without finite space limitations. Such outdoor options vary throughout the region - from city sites to suburban locales to waterfront destinations to a quaint village and more.

Baltimore, MD boasts a wide variety of outdoor dining and event spaces along the waterfront of its scenic Inner Harbor. Groups wanting to experience an authentic outdoor Maryland crab feast can head to Phillips Seafood Baltimore, which is within walking distance of the Baltimore

Convention Center and most hotels in the heart of downtown. Perched on a dock with harbor views, the Phillips Crab Deck delivers a menu of Eastern Shore favorites and steaming hot hard-shell crabs. Alternatively, groups can hop aboard one of Hornblower Cruises and Events’ Baltimore ships. The new-to-fleet and fully renovated Spirit of Baltimore can accommodate brunch, lunch and dinner cruise options. “Due to COVID-19, outdoor dining and event venues will be popular as we safely transition back to in-person meetings and events,” explains Sarah Schaffer, chief marketing officer for Visit Baltimore. “The bonus in Baltimore is that you can host an outdoor event or meal with exceptional waterfront views for attendees.” Located in an 1860s oyster cannery on a five-acre waterfront campus, the Baltimore Museum of Industry often hosts special events and meetings on

The towns and main street communities of Chester County feature tree-lined streets filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and more. This summer, in an effort to expand outdoor dining, many towns, including Kennett Square, Phoenixville and West Chester, are transforming their streets into al fresco dining experiences. A halt in vehicular traffic offers space for open air dining outside many of the restaurants throughout the county.

The Four Dogs Tavern and Marshalton Inn comprise a federal historic district and offer memorable dining experiences. Four Dogs is famous for the expansive and private outdoor dining patio – and dogs are welcome, of course! When visiting Four Dogs and the Inn, stop at the Marshallton Village Heritage Center - a great resource to learn about the unique history of the district and to gather information about regional attractions and activities.

Eagleview Town Center in Exton also has expanded outdoor dining along their “Restaurant Row.” Favorites like Al Pastor, Brickside Grille and Suburban Restaurant and Beer Garden guarantee there is something for every palate. Days and hours vary, and reservations are necessary to monitor safe occupancy levels.

The Gables at Chadds Ford offers a charmingly rustic banquet and event space complemented with an outdoor function area. The menu offers a contemporary twist on traditional American cuisine utilizing fresh local ingredients native to the area. Outdoor firepits are popular on cool evenings.

The Stave at Paradocx Winery in Landenberg offers unique spaces both indoors and out throughout the vineyard. A large tasting room is complemented by a blue stone patio, complete with a firepit. Alice’s Nook is a semi-private space within the patio area for more intimate groups. Finally, The Meadow is a large outdoor space customizable for a variety of events that includes a stage for music, performances and presentations. Brandywine Manor House (c. 1740) consists of the Manor Barn, Garden Terrace and Brandywine tent nestled on 85-acres in the heart of the Honey Brook, PA. The property boasts rolling meadows, an illuminated lake and country gardens, a lighted gazebo, fireplaces, a pergola, footbridges and waterfalls. At Duportail House in Chesterbrook, this (c. 1740) farmhouse and barn are steeped in history; both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the property features a variety of site plans utilizing the home, barn and an outdoor patio that is tented from April through December. Set upon a hill is Faunbrook Bed and Breakfast with spaces that include the inn, porch and tented patio, which is illuminated in the evenings. Terrain Gardens, situated in the lifestyle complex Devon Yards, is a modern-farmhouse venue in Devon, PA, adjacent to worldrenowned Devon Horse Show Grounds. Guests can enjoy a day of shopping and a meal at Devon Garden Café, then check out the unique event spaces, which include European-style gardens and an outdoor, weather-protected porch which leads into a reception room. The White Horse Tavern at the Sheraton Great Valley has added a warm and welcoming outdoor gathering area to complement its newly remodeled indoor event spaces. A cheery firepit and a comfortable conversation seating plan are highlights of this al fresco dining and private event area. The Desmond Hotel Malvern, A Doubletree by Hilton, is well known for its Sunset Grille, the largest outdoor dining deck in Chester County. This expansive space is quietly nestled in the woods and is a welcoming oasis for outdoor events with a fun, beach vibe. The adjacent tented space is popular for private parties and special occasions. Another suburb of Philadelphia offering ample outdoor options is Delaware County. Steve Byrne, executive director of Visit Delco, PA, says that outdoor opportunities include Media’s popular al fresco dining program (formerly named Dining Under the Stars), which has been reimagined in response to COVID19. State Street now is closed on both Wednesdays and Sundays to allow eateries and retailers more space. "The pandemic has been especially challenging on the private event venues across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," explains Domenick Savino, CPCE, CEO and general manager of Drexelbrook Catering and Special Event Center in Drexel Hill. "Like many other venues, we have been limited to 25 guests inside and up to 250 for outside events. Our grand ballroom, under normal conditions, will accommodate up to 1,200 guests, so 25 is not a sustainable model. However, we have implemented and continue to practice all safety protocols as mandated by the governor, secretary of health, the CDC and the FDA. To date, all events held here have been safely executed." Businesses that typically host large gatherings have been forced to shift their focus toward other areas within the realm of food

Di Bruno Bros Catering

Earlier this summer, Radnor township opened a Picnic Grove in a North Wayne parking lot as a way for restaurants and eateries with limited or no outdoor seating on-site to provide dining service outdoors. The Inn at Grace Winery offers an ideal location for a variety of celebrations and serves farm-to-table cuisine that can be paired with its east coast grown wines in unique and memorable settings that includes outdoor function spaces. Di Bruno Bros. Catering handles many events at the winery. The Wayne Bed and Breakfast Inn features Rose Garden dinners as well as theme nights and also works with Di Bruno Bros. Catering, as well as select others, to provide additional outdoor dining opportunities. “We have more restaurants and venues listed on our website, www.visitdelcopa.com, but things are changing rapidly,” Byrne explains. “Hours of operation, outdoor dining spaces, and the need for reservations continue to shift, so we encourage contacting a facility directly to get the latest updates.”

service, Savino notes. For Drexelbrook, that has included co-founding “Food for the Frontline,” offering online food service to go, providing options for corporate dropoffs, and hosting small gatherings at Drexelbrook both inside and outside under tents on the property's grounds. Moving forward, he adds, Drexelbrook will offer even more resource services, including relocating weddings to other outdoor locations in the suburbs, continuing to utilize outdoor spaces on the property, seeking foodservice contracts with the government, and partnering with industry colleagues for additional opportunities as they become available. Despite the challenges, Drexelbrook remains a strong and appealing option for 40 Septemberz October2020

planners and clients because of its excellent service reputation, award winning cuisine and impeccable atmosphere. In 2019, Drexelbrook added a full-service Holiday Inn and Suites hotel along with the Franklin Conference Center and super high-speed wireless Internet to further enhance the meeting experience offered on-site. Swarthmore Town Center is a charitable non-profit in Delaware County with initiatives that include community events like the Swarthmore Farmers Market, Thursday Night Live, Swarthmore Makers Market, and Home for the Holidays. Recently, the Town Center worked closely with Borough Council to approved a measure for the creation of temporary parklets that provide space needed for restaurants to offer physically distanced outdoor dining options.

Each of the four restaurants owned and operated by Peddler’s Village in Bucks County, PA - Cock ‘n Bull, Hart’s Tavern, Buttonwood Grill, and Earl’s New American - boasts full-service outdoor dining, as does the independently owned FresCafe. Peddler’s Village also has added outdoor seating throughout the Village so that people can order take out from these restaurants, as well as from Moku Bowls and the new Mama Hawk’s Kitchen and Coffee, and dine outside in a variety of scenic spots within the landscaped property. Currently, Cock ‘n Bull is offering two tented event packages for weddings, as well, including one with food, cocktails, wedding cake, rentals and more, and the other featuring rentals, bar and cake, but which allows guests to bring in their own caterer or food truck vendors. According to Brian Shields, director of sales, and Ann Lipcsey, assistant director

White Dog Cafe - University City, Philadelphia, PA

of sales, outdoor events give Peddler’s Village the opportunity to have far more guests for a private event (250) than they are allowed to have in Pennsylvania for an indoor event (25). Both of these maximum numbers set by the state must include staff and any professional vendors. “Another benefit of an outdoor setting is that people feel safer right now being in an open-air setting when enjoying a meal.” In case of inclement weather, Peddler’s Village offers a large tent to keep guests dry and comfortable. “One of our tented options give guests the opportunity to bring in food trucks… an appealing, affordable option to help offset the current high cost of rentals and to give… guests a very cool, laid-back, and memorable experience.” In Atlantic City, NJ, the Sky is the limit at Ocean Casino Resort. In August, Ocean opened its brandnew rooftop-style dining experience, Sky Garden Grille, where guests can relax, dine and drink outdoors. Open daily, weather-permitting, and set on three landscaped acres overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Sky Garden Grille becomes the latest addition to the all-new Sky Garden area, which also features the Sky Garden Bar, patio dining areas, fire pits and more. The property has expanded its dining options since reopening to offer guests more than 20 alternatives. There are 12 takeout options with several convenient outdoor eating areas, expanded room service, new venues like Bites + Brews food and beer trucks in the porte cochere, a Boardwalk Poolside Bar, Outdoor VIP Lounge, and the aforementioned Sky Garden Grille. “We’ve been continually adapting and expanding our offerings, staying within state protocols, to offer our guests the experience they deserve. These are challenging operating conditions, but I am very pleased that we were able to create an environment where our guests feel comfortable,” notes Terry Glebocki, CEO of Ocean Casino Resort. A huge benefit during challenging times, outdoor options like these provide planners with the opportunity to hold larger meal functions and gatherings while also enjoying a scenic and serene atmosphere and connection with nature.

Continuing Conversations to Inspire

Forward Motion by Sharon DeFelices

In the words of The Pointer Sisters… I’m so excited! And I just can’t hide it! Real live events are happening again! With real people sitting in actual chairs. For a while, we only saw published plans and protocols from hotels and venues about what they were “going to do” to keep attendees safe. Lou Marrocco, CMP, SEPC is president of Brandywine Events, LLC and also director of meetings and events for Visit Delco, PA. He and I had been talking about how we, as planners, can foster the confidence in our clients for a return to live events. Now that groups are gathering, by sharing what’s really happening on-site, we’re hoping to encourage even more face-to-face gatherings. It bears repeating that communicating what is possible and what is expected of guests is a cooperative approach to ensuring that groups are safe and that their events can be productive. In a search for tangible examples, I first asked Kristofer Fair, COO and GM of Bluestone Country Club, how the “reopening” was being planned at his venue. Kris reinforced our earlier conversation, and article topic, by expressing how important communication was around the property. With the ever-changing mandates that are happening county, and now statewide, he feels it is critical that the correct information is shared daily with the departments at the club. Daily briefings from the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association (PRLA), and the governor’s office are keeping him up-to-date. He, in turn, is sending daily emails with current mandates to all department heads who are debriefing their staff before each shift. It is critically important that every worker knows what the current directives are.

42 Septemberz October2020

In addition to the internal communication on his property, Kris feels it is just as important that Bluestone’s communication with the event host is clear and thorough. As he puts it, “health is a two-way street.” They have an addendum for event hosts, asking for cooperation in maintaining safety protocols. The addendum details safety standards that staff must abide by and explains the standards that the guests are expected to uphold for the safety of everyone. I also spoke with Stephani Bann, interim assistant director of sales for Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in the Pocono Mountains. Kalahari Resorts has recently completed an expansion to their convention center and meeting spaces, now offering a total of 205,000-square feet of meeting space, including 33 meeting spaces and four ballrooms ranging in size from 9,000- to 38,000-square feet. The property also has 977 guestrooms and an Executive Conference Center for up to 400 guests.

Kalahari recently hosted small groups with 20 attendees or fewer for training classes. Stephani was kind enough to share details about the events and how certain aspects were planned. The groups were hosted in a 3,000-square foot space with plenty of room plus signage in rooms and hallways to help guide attendees when it comes to appropriate physical distancing.

A wellness concierge in the lobby ensures guest safety, there is physical distance signage in all public areas, and hand sanitizing stations are located throughout the property, including outside elevators. Kalahari sales staff work closely with clients to accomplish goals and are clear and thorough in expressing what the mandated guidelines are for the area.

For meals, boxed lunches were available at manned stations. During breaks, individually wrapped snack items were offered and coffee and single-serve cold beverages were served by an attendant. Touchless water stations also are a new addition to the property for safety and convenience.

Kalahari has published a detailed guide communicating all that they are doing to keep guests safe: www.kalahariresorts.com/what-we-aredoing-to-ensure-a-safe-getaway

For the hotel operations, Stephani explained that Kalahari has voluntarily limited hotel room occupancy levels. At check in, guests are asked to have only one member per family/party approach the check-in desk. Kalahari has further reduced lines for check-in by texting parties when check-in is available and setting up satellite checkin desks in the convention center.

Next, I switched gears for a little planner perspective and spoke to Lisa Oliphant Beard, president and owner of M3Solutions, LLC in Birmingham, AL, a professional, personalized association management services company. was scheduled to take place before Florida was experiencing the current level of COVID-19 infections. The Hilton Sandestin Beach Resort is a 600-room hotel and was operating at reduced occupancy. The event, which typically would have approximately 150 attendees and 65 exhibitor booths, was planned this year with purposefully reduced attendance at 40 exhibitors and about 90 attendees. Ninetyfive percent of all attendees were drive-in. Cooperative mandates by the hotel and association included a health declaration, waiver and mask-wearing. Physical distance markers were on the floor throughout the hotel as well as oneway traffic flow markers into and out of all rooms and the exhibit hall. Attendants were posted in the corridors to provide extra encouragement for guests to follow the safety guidelines. The hotel provided hand sanitizer, as well as a wrapped and sealed meeting room amenity with a pad, a pen and sanitizing wipe. Lisa printed name plates for each attendee so that they occupied the same seat each day. This also allowed for contact tracing should someone fall ill after the event. 44 Septemberz October2020

Meals were carefully planned, and the hotel was consistent in their service standards. The breakfast buffets and boxed lunches were manned stations. All bottled and canned beverages were wiped before being handed to guests by an attendant. Coffee was a served station with all condiments being dispensed by attendant. For breaktimes, all items were individually wrapped, with beverages being dispensed by an attendant. For the exhibit space, all booths were 10feet by 10-feet and clustered in pods of four. Larger aisles and extended exhibit hours allowed for staggered and safer attendee flow. Guests were happy to be together and understood that circumstances are currently different. Lisa appreciated the communication and collaboration with the hotel. The Hilton provided diagrams and protocols that were reviewed by the association’s board ahead of arrival and allowed for cooperative partnering on the event. I was very happy to hear from Jeffrey Miller, chef-owner of Jeffrey A. Miller Catering (JAM), one of Philadelphia’s largest and most successful high-end

catering companies, about some of the events his firm has been hosting. Jeffrey has published both an open letter to his guests and his JAM COVID-19 Playbook on his website, which offers detailed information about their commitment to mandates and initiatives for keeping guests safe. Jeffrey shared information about a recent outdoor wedding they hosted with 150 people in attendance at The Curtis Arboretum. I was so impressed with the creativity they utilized in solving the dance-floor conundrum. By keeping the dance floor indoors, thereby limiting occupancy to 25 people, JAM was able to avoid the uncomfortable situation of having to ask guests to leave the floor. JAM staff kept track as guests entered the room to dance and were able to make sure the event kept within state mandated guidelines. The DJ, a safety partner in the process, offered periodic reminders to the dancing crowd, while keeping the music going. Creative cocktail hour service was on the menu, too! Stationed small plates of antipasto, risotto and skewered hors d’oeuvres were available for guests to take back to their seats and enjoy. Butlered hors

d’oeuvres were available to guests seated at tables, in keeping with Pennsylvania’s mandates. I’m truly excited that we’re starting to figure out how to safely gather again. FOOD AND DRINK Since 1782, the Lexington Market has been a Baltimore icon and, in summer of 2021, it will unveil a multimillion-dollar renovation. Developers plan to use part of the current three-building footprint to build a whole new market housing 40-65 vendors that will blend traits of the existing landmark with the vibe of a modern-day food hall. The marketplace adds to Baltimore’s growing portfolio of contemporary food halls, including R. House, Mount Vernon Marketplace and the recently renovated Broadway Market and Cross Street Market.

UNIQUE VENUES With views of Baltimore's Inner Harbor and more than a dozen awardwinning exhibits, the National Aquarium is currently open, but with essential changes to ensure a safe experience. To ensure an efficient and safe flow through the aquarium, a linear path has been established throughout both buildings, the 4D Immersion Theater and Living Seashore touch pools are currently closed, and seating in Dolphin Discovery also is currently unavailable to guests.

COVID-19 RESPONSE AND RESOURCES As travel restrictions loosen, research is showing that visitors will seek out destinations they have confidence are safe and healthy to visit. WHAT’S NEW From compelling new public artwork and tours that highlight the city’s African American history to retro-inspired treats served from an historic ice house, there are plenty of new things to do in Alexandria, just minutes from Washington, DC. Alexandria’s biggest story continues to be at its evolving waterfront, with the newest installation being an annual temporary public art series, tours and cruises on the city’s new resident tall ship, and a celebrity-owned salon. In March 2019, the City of Alexandria opened a transformational new park area at the foot of King Street, seamlessly connecting Old Town’s historic retail corridor with the waterfront. Alexandria’s maritime history experience at the Old Town waterfront, tall ship Providence, is open for private tours and happy hours this summer. This celebrity tall ship, which has appeared in the international blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, is a full-scale reproduction of one of the most renowned ships in the Continental Navy. In addition, the city purchased Freedom House to preserve the National Historic Landmark that was once home to one of the largest domestic slave trading operations in the country. Visit Alexandria also has launched a self-guided Duke Street History Trail. 50 Septemberz October2020

FOOD AND DRINK Alexandria’s dining scene is experiencing a burst of flavors from across Asia, from Southeast Asian, vegetarianfriendly fare at Del Ray’s Spice Kraft Indian Bistro, which celebrated their grand opening in January 2020, to East Asian infusions like bubble tea and hot fried chicken. There will also be plenty of ways to cool off with Alexandria’s milky-sweet bubble tea bonanza from Spill the Tea, which opened in northwest Old Town in late 2019, to the newly open Ya-Gút St., an Old Town North café from the team behind Vietnamese hotspots Caphe Banh Mi and Sunday in Saigon. The noodle trend was set off in spring 2019 by Yunnan by Potomac Noodle House whose hearty mixian noodle bowls have earned praise from The Washington Post.

HOTEL NEWS The Hyatt Centric Old Town Alexandria, Hyatt’s first hotel in the city, opened in January 2020. Hyatt Centric Old Town Alexandria includes 124 guest rooms and French & Southern, a restaurant featuring expansive selections of French and American Southern cuisine. Also coming to Old Town in 2020 are several Sonder properties. Sonder is a tech-enabled hospitality company combining boutique living spaces with hotel amenities in cities around the world. Work also will be underway throughout 2020 to restore a historic 1926 hotel to its roots. The building, considered one of the best examples of Colonial Revival architecture in the city, served as office space for decades and is expected to open as a hotel, operated by Aparium Hotel Group in 2021. The hotel will feature 141 guest rooms, two restaurants, plus rooftop and outdoor dining. photo credit: Chris Cruz

MEETINGS FOCUS Like many destinations, Alexandria is aptly evaluating the new layout of meetings and events as the COVID-19 crisis continues. OVERVIEW Fairfax County provides a great value proposition – many of the hotels, restaurants, etc. offer lower rates than can be found in the city, so it allows attendees to save on a stay and put that money toward more experiential things to do.

WHAT’S NEW Six new Metrorail stations were added to the Tysons, McLean and Reston areas in 2014 – on the new Silver Line extension of Washington, DC’s Metrorail system. In early 2021, they are anticipating the second phase of the Silver Line to open, which will add about six additional stations in Herndon, Reston, Dulles International Airport, and into Loudoun County. This will make Tysons/McLean – and all of Washington, DC – instantly accessible to Dulles Airport for the first time in history. Access to thought leaders like congressmen/women, government officials, spokespeople from regulatory agencies, etc. are often available in Fairfax County due to its prime location next to the nation’s capital. Speakers may be arranged depending on schedules and availability.

THINGS TO DO Fairfax County offers a diverse range of venues, tourism offerings, and experiences. While the area is seen by many as an urban destination with 1.2 million residents – which affords visitors all of the great amenities of a big city like great dining, experiential attractions and more – there also are very rural pockets for groups who want to enjoy the great outdoors. Hiking, biking, rafting, and bald eagle viewing are common activities, as are golfing, zip lining, and horseback riding. In addition to many chef-driven restaurants that continue to pop-up in Fairfax County, attendees can enjoy evenings at local breweries and wineries. Visit Fairfax offers turnkey destination services including customized Save the Date postcards to help boost attendance and will ship these complimentary cards direct to the group contact.

UNIQUE VENUES Enjoy receptions on the rooftop deck of the skyrise, Tysons Tower, 25-stories in the air where sunsets are unforgettable. Coming soon is the National Museum of the U.S. Army: Its opening delayed by COVID-19, the Army Museum will offer several special events spaces, including a soaring central entrance lobby, grand Veterans Hall, and outdoor Medal of Honor Garden. The museum also will offer a full catering kitchen. Enjoy an evening surrounded by some of history’s most interesting and infamous pieces of aviation and spacecraft at Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Walk in the footsteps of George Washington with an event on the back lawn of his beloved Mount Vernon estate overlooking the Potomac River.

ADAPTING TO COVID Visit Fairfax continues to look at new and unique ways, whether virtual or safely in-person, to support the meetings industry moving forward in this new travel climate. They also have launched a new “Takeout Trail” to help support local restaurants, showcasing all those who offer takeout, curbside, and special offers during the pandemic. “Fairfax at Home” is another offering from Visit Fairfax that includes a collection of tools, lists, and opportunities that residents (and future visitors) can take advantage of during this challenging time. It includes virtual tours of attractions, mental health resources, ways to support local businesses, fun things to do at home and more. Many attractions are featuring new ways to experience their sites, whether through virtual tours, online ticketing/contactless admission or limited tours with face covering requirements and hand sanitizer stations.

Cohnversations with Jim Hospitality and Meetings InSight VENUES/DESTINATIONS Shelley Williams, Vice President of Sales, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City With the addition of Virtual as part of a meeting or event, how are you enticing clients to bring their business to your property/destination for In-Person meetings? Hard Rock Atlantic City is offering on-site production rooms to give Virtual Attendees the opportunity to see the 'Big Event.' Internet capabilities/tech support allows for a seamless production and set-up with our AV crew. Should the Board of Directors need to be LIVE, they would be available during the stream from one single location.

What will the planner ‘not’ experience by only doing a Virtual meeting/event? Planners will miss the Hard Rock VIBE and the networking interaction, as well as the ability to have live, instantaneous reactions, conversation and debate about a topic. That is difficult to replicate in an online environment.

54 Septemberz October2020

Kelvin D. Moore, Regional General Manager of the Pennsylvania Convention Center With the addition of Virtual as part of a meeting or event, how are you enticing clients to bring their business to your property/destination for In-Person meetings? We have created a three-pronged approach to entice clients. First, ensuring that we provide planners with the safest meeting environment possible while maintaining the highest levels of customer service. To that effect, we have instituted new policies and procedures as part of our Re-Activation Operating Framework. Fueled by the ASM Global Venue Shield program and following the guidance from the Center for Disease Control and the Pennsylvania Department of Health and other public health agencies, our operating framework outlines enhancements to our standard operating procedures in six categories; environmental hygiene, food service, the customer journey, workforce and training, technology and equipment, and public awareness. This operating framework is designed with the flexibility needed to adjust protocols as requirements and guidance changes. As the guidance from public health officials evolves, so shall our operating protocol. On top of instituting the re-activation protocol, we are pursuing the Global Biorisk Advisory Council (GBAC) STAR accreditation, a rigorous outbreak prevention, response and recovery accreditation for facilities. Secondly, recognizing that virtual and hybrid meetings will be part of the fabric of the industry for some time, we are working to develop spaces, specifically huddle rooms, and provide the latest technologies that will aid planners in hosting and producing hybrid meetings from the Center. Thirdly, by maintaining close relationships with our planning partners and listening to what is important to them. We want them to feel safe and assured that we will provide the best meeting environment possible post-COVID-19. Our sales team remains in close contact with our clients, often just reaching out to say “hi” and to see how they are doing. Through the development of what we’re calling our “Chat, Chew and Zoom” program, our sales team will have lunch delivered to clients and chat over lunch. It is important to understand that people will always remember how they were made to feel during times such as these.

In your eyes, what will the planner ‘not’ experience by only doing a Virtual meeting/event? Simply put, virtual meetings will not and cannot deliver the person-to-person interaction that on-site meetings can deliver. The industry has had to pivot to create meaningful and sustainable ways to convene and virtual platforms certainly have allowed ongoing connections for idea sharing and meetings during the pandemic. Our hybrid meeting capabilities can provide an excellent solution for planners to have the best of both. You can’t replicate the networking opportunities that exist in the live meeting setting: the one-on-one conversations in between meetings or the catching up with colleagues at the end of the day. Virtual meetings simply can’t replace that fundamental instinct and, once it is safe to do so, we will all do what we have always done - meet together again.

PLANNERS Kristine Golden, CMP, Senior Manager, Meetings & Events, Bryn Mawr Communications Group If you foresee your future meetings having a hybrid element, what would be some components that you’ll need (video recording, more engagements/Q&A through the chat feature, etc.) to make online feel more special?

Katie Schultz, Director, Sales and Marketing, Chubb Hotel & Conference Center, and President, MPI PHL With the addition of Virtual as part of a meeting or event, how are you enticing clients to bring their business to your property/destination for In-Person meetings? With our in-house audio-visual team and 1 Gig of Internet connectivity, we will be able to customize and offer economical packages. We own our AV, so the person who creates your specific package will be your on-site tech, as well. We also have Cisco Merakis in every meeting room that allow us to push more Internet into the rooms being used versus the empty rooms, giving even more powerful Wi-Fi.

What will the planner ‘not’ experience by only doing a Virtual meeting/event? The opportunity to read someone’s expression during a presentation. I always scan the crowd when I’m speaking for MPI PHL to ensure that I’m keeping their interest.

Scott Higgins, Associate Director of Sales & Business Development, Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board With the addition of Virtual as part of a meeting or event, how are you enticing clients to bring their business to your property/destination for In-Person meetings? We believe we need to provide relevant information from reliable sources, and we’ve done this by introducing Montco Wellness for Events. The program encourages groups to Make It Safe with easy access to information from officials and venues; Make It Healthy with plenty of wellness-oriented options, and finally, #MakeItMontco with the commitment to provide support throughout the planning and executing process.

In your eyes, what will the planner ‘not’ experience by only doing a Virtual meeting/event? Virtual events are a good short-term solution; however, they don’t come close to matching the networking ability that live events offer. With these virtual events, you lose the opportunity to casually run into someone or randomly meet someone new. 56 Septemberz October2020

As states start to open up, I find that people are still hesitant to leave their homes. Since the pandemic has raged on for so long, the enthusiasm of online meetings has subsided, so planners need to find other unique ideas to promote registration and to engage their attendees. Once you get people to register for a meeting, there are few options for sponsor/trade show engagement with attendees. How do you entice sponsors to support a meeting if you cannot promise them an opportunity at lead generation? Depending on the objective of the meeting, I think meetings have an opportunity to use more interactive components that help create a real-time, shared experience among attendees instead of just pushing content out at a rapid-fire pace.

Now that you have had some virtual encounters with online programing, what are your comments on Virtual compared to In-Person? Virtual meetings can be just as complicated as in-person meetings, if not more work. Planners must partner with an expert AV team, whether it is a series of pre-recorded content or a live webinar. Planners also should be very comfortable with the delivery system, whether it is Zoom, On24, or some other platform. They all have quirks and can make, or break, the success of your meeting. There is a lot of opportunity for planners to learn new skills now, but not everyone has the means to do so. Some companies are offering free or discounted trainings. The Free Library of Philadelphia offers access to the Lynda.com database which is full of curated content, and even certification-approved courses for a number of professions, such as digital marketing and coding.

Ilene Sauertieg, Director of Education, PA Optometric Association If you foresee your future meetings having a hybrid element, what would be some components that you’ll need (video recording, more engagements/Q&A through the chat feature, etc.) to make online feel more special? We need a platform that is easy for our members to work with. When we went to a web-based platform for our continuing education in the spring, which only allows Q&A via chat, our younger members were all over it. I had to do one-on-one training with some of our older members who

were not as adept using their computers, even up to the time that the program actually went live. If we moved to a hybrid element, we would need real-time interaction for those doctors who are not in the room so they have the same opportunity to have their questions/comments addressed. For our business session, we would need the availability of polling/voting as we pass our budget and vote in our Board of Directors among other items as well as some type of option to allow our local societies to caucus prior to voting.

Now that you have had some virtual encounters with online programing, what are your comments on Virtual compared to In-Person? For the continuing education portion of our online programming, my doctors have been very happy with the process. They are active in the chat section and all our speakers provide contact information for questions after the events. However, we did find from various surveys that our members miss the opportunity to sit together in the same room and have give-and-take discussions about patient care, office practices, staffing, etc. so they are very enthusiastic about attending our meeting next April.

The research was conducted for PromoLeaf by Censuswide, with 1,008 respondents in the United States who have been to a F2F conference and a virtual conference. Key findings include: - Respondents would pay more for in-person events, and 80 percent would only be willing to pay $200 or less for a virtual conference - 82 percent believe a virtual conference should last less than 2 hours while only 51 percent believe in-person conferences should be less than 2 hours long - 46 percent said Virtual conferences should be live and two-directional, and an additional 38 percent said they would prefer virtual conferences to be both live and recorded for viewing later While the space for both types of conferences is still evolving, the desire for in-person events appears to be here to stay. promoleaf.com Mid-AtlanticEvEntSMagazine 59

EventsWorthy #HOSPITALITYREADY SERIES PART ONE: PHILADELPHIA AND ITS COUNTRYSIDE - PRIVATE EVENTS July 29, 2020 – Drexel Hill, PA – All protocols had been met, physical distancing, signage, tracing, sanitization methods were all in place as this was to be the first meeting scheduled as a hybrid event with over 100 guests registered In-Person and 120 Virtual. Then, two weeks prior to the event restrictions were changed and enforced in a flash by State government on the amount of attendees allowed inside a venue. The event had to pivot and turn around in 48 hours. Top hospitality experts came together at Drexelbrook Special Events Center for now a virtual only panel discussion. The purpose of the event was to correctly inform the hospitality industry about the current status of the pandemic mandates, and what they mean for the Private Event Industry at that specific point in time, and then moving forward. The program started with an in-person panel discussion and updates from each county destination management organization. Participating were Paul Bencivengo, Visit Bucks County, Steve Byrne of Visit Delco, PA and Susan Hamley, Chester County CVB and joining in virtually was Mike Bowman of Valley Forge TCB. Then industry Experts, Domenick Savino with Drexelbrook Hospitality, Melissa Bova with Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association, John McNichol at the PA Convention Center Authority along with Jeffrey Miller of JAM Catering and moderated by Phyllis Jablonowski with Eventricity lead a panel discussion on procedures and plans to insure safety at events.
