hitney Patterson and Alexandria Williams are the two phenomenal women behind SportyAfros.com, a dynamic website that combines natural hair, health, and sports. The two entrepreneurs started SportyAfros in 2010 after constantly being asked how they maintained their curly/coily hair while sticking to a consistent workout routine. Sporty Afros is an innovative, unique company that provides health and wellness resources for African-American women to take control of their health. With one of the leading obesity rates in the United States, African-American women are at serious risk, yet there are little to no health and wellness resources available that address their specific needs. 16 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - August 2014

Sporty Afros.com is the first site of its kind, breaking down the barriers that prevent black women from addressing their health by connecting the dots between hair care, exercise and nutrition. In a 2011 article in the New York Times, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin stated that hair care is a major barrier to fitness for black women and needs to be tackled in order to effectively decrease the community’s obesity statistics. Sporty Afros.com is a one stop shop for questions, discussions, tips and answers about fitness/workout routines and healthy nutrition while providing practical workout hair care solutions. To this end, Sporty Afros has developed the first line of hair care products specifically formulated for active black women.

he natural hair community. Is it a secret society? Maybe it is a sorority or fraternity? That would be the only way to explaining the alphabet soup that populates conversations within the natural hair care world. Read any natural hair blog, forum, and/or Facebook page, etc. and you are guaranteed to come across a hurricane of alphabets that are purposely used to certify who is truly a part of the fold.

reaches the armpit

"BC", "ACV", "APL", "CG", "SL", "TWA", "WKRP"... (OK I am joking with the last one)

BSL: Bra Strap Length: refers to hair that reaches the bra strap position on a female's back

Newbies look on in confusion and veterans looks for new acronyms that they can come up with to show that they are worthy to be called "natural". Well, it should NOT be that difficult to understand or participate in a conversation. So, we are going to bring edification to the alphabet hodgepodge and jargon used (at least to the common acronyms that are used most often). We searched the web high and low, and we think this is a good starter list of the common ones. Certainly, this is not an exhaustive list, but it is sure to help you get started in understanding what everyone is talking about.

CG: Refers to the "Curly Girl" method explained in the book by Lorraine Massey. It is a philosophy for curls that involves, no or low shampoo, cone avoidance, and conditioner washing...among other things. These are just a few of the basic tenants.

AVC: Apple Cider Vinegar (used to seal hair cuticle during the final rinse). Usually used to restore the natural pH to the hair, clean and condition

EO: Essential Oils.

BA: The length of this afro is anywhere between 24 inches to 38 inches BC: Big Chop. Refers to the cutting off of relaxed or chemically hair, with the result of only natural hair being present on the scalp BNC: Braid and Curl

DIY: Do it Yourself DT or DC: Deep Treatment/Deep Conditioner. A DT is when you leave a moisturizing (or protein based, depending on your needs) conditioner on your hair for an extended period of time, along with a heat source to aid in penetration.

his year, over 550,000 people entered the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana for the 20th Anniversary of the Essence Music Festival. This festival is one of the largest events celebrating African Americans in the US and each year hundreds of thousands of people descend upon the city to attend this “Party with a purpose.” Among the many big name vendors that show up at the festival each year such as McDonalds, Ford, Coca-Cola and Wal-Mart are very unique pop up stores in the popular French Quarters. Among those pop up stores are some very unique opportunities for guests to address care problems and get their hands on very specific products from companies like Carol’s Daughters, Shea Moisture and Cover Girl.

This year, these companies offered some very unique experiences for their customers and guest of the festival including very chic atmospheres, hard to find products and celebrity serenades during their shopping experience. In addition, these pop-up stores offered experience professionals, including Carol’s Daughter founder Lisa Price on hand to answer festival-goers questions about their individual hair care problems.

tomers from around the world! This year they included a special meet and greet with founder Lisa Price as well as TV reality star and singer Trina Braxton. This year, the slightly more economical Shea Moisture product line decided to get in on the fun and celebration of African American hair that graces the festival each year! This product line came in with a BOOM offering special events on each day of the festival including upbeat socials like “Cocktails with Curlfriends.” The festival boast on catering to African American professionals and it proved its commitment once again by including free mini make-up stations throughout the festival offering Cover Girl brand mini make-overs. “I wanted to try some brighter colors to compliment what I was wearing and I loved them! The girls [that applied her make-up] were so nice and we walked out with over 5 freebies including 2 mascaras, 2 colorlicious lip glosses and make-up remover!” says Essence Music Festival goer Mia-Liani Patterson who received one of the complementary make-overs at the festival that included mascara, eye shadow and Colorlicious gloss. Sylvia Siler, who also received a make-over added, “It was wonderful! They took the time to discuss techniques and went over the samples they’d given us to try later!” This year’s Essence Festival was head-

mance by Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Charlie Wilson, Trey Songz, Tamar Braxton and more! The Essence Festival is held every year in New

Orleans, Louisiana (except for in 2006, when it was held in Houston, Texas after Hurricane Katrina) during the 4th of July weekend. In 2015, the festival will be held July 2-5th.

Festival-goer and long time Carol’s Daughter customer Michele Allen visited the store and she says, “I am natural and loves Carol’s daughter products and the store looked absolutely amazing!” For several years Carol’s Daughters offers a pop up store at the festival to greet cus-

Grow Your Hair with Patience and Consistency

G

aining weight or developing health issues usually happen overtime. Whether it's due to an unhealthy diet, pregnancy, illness, medication or lack of exercise, gaining weight doesn't generally happen overnight and neither does heart disease or diabetes. When we decide to lose weight, unfortunately it doesn't just fall off and when we want to take control of our health issues, they don't just disappear. Even if we change our diets and exercise, (depending on how much we gained), it usually takes significant time and effort to get back to a healthy weight or state of well-being. Keeping this in mind; think about your hair follicles. Think about the years and years of feeding it an unhealthy diet of toxic ingredients such as mineral oil, paraffin, petrolatum, sulfates, parabens, etc. Think of the chemicals in relaxers, dyes, shampoos and moisturizers we have fed our follicles, some of us for 20-30 years or more! What about all of the tugging with combing and brushing, or the heat when blow drying or curling. For some of us, there's a wonder we have any hair at all. Remember that beautiful, thick head of hair you had when you were younger; maybe it was thicker just last year! Then when looking at old pictures or styling your hair you notice it's thinner, fragile, or just seems shorter than you remembered? Much like looking back at the pictures when you were three sizes smaller, you may not be able to pinpoint one thing that caused it, but it's very likely that the lack of a healthy diet had something, if not everything to do with it. If your hair is damaged; growing thinner, drier or fragile, chances are the scalp or follicles aren't as healthy as they once were. Constant "abuse" or "neglect" may have caused your follicles to retard; to produce weaker strands and decelerate growth. The severity of the damage determines the intensity of the treatment; extreme cases may need consistent, long-term TLC; using the "Super hair grow" moisturizer for a week, probably won't work. And, if the moisturizer contains the common hazardous

28 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - August 2014

ingredients listed above, it may be causing further damage. Chemical and traction alopecia (hair loss and thinning due to pulling the hair too tightly or using chemicals) may take an extended amount of time and effort to reverse, but I am a witness with a testimony that says consistent TLC can make a world of difference. If your follicles are severely damaged and you are in a battle to restore them, it may take months before any progress is noticed. Your follicles may need to heal and rejuvenate before there is a noticeable difference in the strands. Think of someone with insulin dependent diabetes; if they change their diet and follow all of their doctor's instructions, it still takes time before insulin can be reduced; it may take many years before a person no longer has to depend on insulin (if ever). Regardless of how long it takes to see results, you know that a nutrient rich diet and developing healthy habits will render better results than that of preservatives, parabens, fats, sulfates, sodium, mineral oil, sugar, or petrolatum! So be patient with your follicles make sure you are consistent with providing a nutritious diet so that your follicles have a chance to heal, rejuvenate and thrive! Even if you get frustrated and decide to wear a wig or weave; go ahead, but make sure you are still caring for your hair under them! Sweet Nature by Eddie understands that healthy hair starts from a healthy scalp and nourished follicles, that's why each product is packed full of vitamins, minerals and herbs. As you are washing your hair it's reaping the benefits of amazing ingredients that not only hydrate the hair, but heal the scalp. When conditioning the hair, the scalp is stimulated helping blood flow. And each time you use one of the four moisturizers, you are feeding your follicles an optimal diet to rejuvenate the follicles; so they can do their job of producing healthy strands Article Source: Grow Your Hair With Patience and Consistency

Well Ceata Lash decided to take things into her own hands, and created the perfect product, the PuffCuff! “As I transitioned from relaxed to natural hair, I discovered that it was impossible to find accessories to accommodate the thickness and texture of my hair. Searching in stores and online, I realized that most accessories on the market are designed for straight, thin hair – nothing like my naturally thick, coarse hair! Existing products cinched my hair to its smallest point of resistance, creating “bunny tail hair” (not a good look for a grown woman), hair breakage, damage to the accessory and Pure Frustration! It was then that the concept of the PuffCuff was born.” The PuffCuff Hair Clamp was developed from a simple idea: Create a tool that not only makes it easy to achieve stylish looks without stressing your hair, but that is sanitary, durable and affordable. What Makes the PuffCuff Different? Let’s face it. Most accessories are for straight hair. Unlike coily hair, straight hair only comes in one type: straight. After years of searching for an accessory to accommodate thick textured hair, Ceata created PuffCuff. It works with every type of coily hair, from kinky to curly, to help you create many beautiful hairstyles without cinching your hair to the smallest point of resistance and damaging it. Sound special? It is. You won’t find PuffCuff at your local big box store. This one-of-a-kind clamp is only available at PuffCuffHairClamp.com and on Amazon.com.

Best Flat Iron for Natural Hair By Mila T

I

f you have your hair right where you want it but you wish to enhance it a little bit more, you can always do so with the best flat iron for natural hair. Many people make the mistake of thinking their locks will be invincible to all sorts of hair tools and opt to use a cheap flat iron. Afterwards they observe the disastrous consequences as their once natural locks are dry, brittle and damaged. To avoid this, you don't have to steer clear of every hair iron you come across. Instead, take some time to research brands and models and find out the benefits that suit your styling needs the most. There are general benefits the best flat iron for natural hair can produce and you can read about them to guide your purchase decision better. The rest will depend on your individual hair situation and personal taste...not to mention budget! One of the first things the best hair iron for natural hair will have is high quality heating elements. Cheap flat irons use metallic plates coated in ceramic and this is damaging to your hair especially when used frequently. The reason for this is that the plates are unable to produce a consistent temperature, often causing hot spots and burning which manifests in dryness, frizz and brittle strands. If you want to conserve the healthy, natural state of your locks, it's better to find a hair iron that uses genuine heating materials such as pure ceramic or tourmaline. You can also find flat irons that use a combination of both and though these are pricier, they are well worth it. Ceramic is universally recognized as one of the healthiest styling materials thanks to its moist, gentle heat and use of negative ions. With ceramic your strands will retain moisture and vibrancy, plus the overall health and shine will be improved. Tourmaline offers similar advantages, and it can style faster thanks to the enormous amount of negative ions this material produces. Another thing the best flat iron for natural hair features is a high, consistent temperature, along with adjustable heat settings and a lightweight, ergonomic design. To maintain the condition of your hair, you should rely on the heat settings to ensure that the temperature isn't so high, this way you can avoid burning. The ergonomic design will allow you to straighten your hair comfortably and easily. Like what you read? Try the Karmin Salon Pro G3 flat iron, it includes all the aforementioned benefits and more. ant to achieve a cute curly style with no heat?

Try a Braided Twist Out. It’s easy to do, and you will love the results! You can start with wet or dry hair (As shown). Apply your favorite moisturizer. Next, separate hair into small sections, and braid or twist hair. If your braids or twists start to come apart, try placing perm rods on the ends. This will also give you a curl on the ends of your hair when you take them down. For best results, wait at least overnight before you untwist/braid the hair. (You can use a hair dryer to speed up the process if necessary.) Apply a little oil to your hands, and then untwist the hair. 49 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

MWBH Make Up

Kiss & Makeup Why you need a makeup artist By LeAndrea Mack

W

hether it’s the “big day” or a very special day, when all eyes (and cameras) are on you, everyday cosmetics won’t cut it! You need studio make up and expert precision in order to produce flawless portraits.

What is the purpose of the makeup artist? Hiring a makeup artist can prove to be a terrific enhancement to your professional photography and most photographers would agree that having make-up applied helps when adding the professional lighting element.

The do-it-yourself make-up mentality should NOT apply to the big events in your life! Ten years ago, make-up artist were only in the budget of celebrities and movie stars but now they are more affordable and more accessible than ever!

Shanna Brown, a premiere make-up artist in Kansas city, suggests that makeup artist should definitely be hired for weddings, graduations, proms and homecomings but also explains that hiring a makeup artist for much smaller events like a “girl’s night out” or a dinner party are also

watched YouTube videos collecting plenty of tricks and tips for applying your make-up but for special events, especially when portraits are involved, hiring a pro is a critical! Nina Tyler, another Midwest MUA says that, “…a good make-up artist is just as knowledgeable about skincare and provides their clients with information on how to properly remove their make-up and offer suggestions on products that may work better with their specific problem areas.” In an interview with several makeup artist, the question “What are the most important cosmetic products,” was asked, and to our surprise, we learned that it wasn’t a hot red lipstick or a waterproof mascara (which was still near the top of their list) but it was a good moisturizer that would both hydrate and protect the face! “Your time with a makeup artist is about more than an application of makeup,” says Gina Victoria, “[with a quality MUA] it is a consultation that consists of determining colors, tools, and products that are just right for you!”

good times to utilize a make-up artist to try a fresh new look, experience high quality make-up and learn about application techniques. An artful eye can capture beauty and potential that has went unnoticed. Makeup artists (or MUAs) are trained to look for the beauty in every woman and work with the features that are unique to their clients. MUA’s also are aware of the many factors that can affect your look and help you adjust to these factors as much as possible.

Blogger and MUA Tameka “Meek” Dickerson of Kansas City conquers that you should walk away from your MUA session with some education. She has created a blog that chronicles different elements of style and beauty products and suggestions to help you achieve your look and emphasizes the importance of skincare throughout her site. Check out her mobile makeup counter at Meeksmobilemakeupcounter.blogspot.com. With events like America’s Beauty Show in Chicago, Midwest International hair and fashion show in St Louis, KC’s Fashion Week, Beauty and Bow-ties, and a host of fashion forward events, the Midwest has developed a need for highly skilled local and accessible makeup artists. So at the very least, for the important events in your life, avoid the stress of makeup products and applications and leave it to the pros like Shanna Brown, Nina Tyler, Tameka “Meek” Dickerson and Gina Victoria (Gunn) to make your face flawless! Shanna Brown, MUA from Kansas City, says that in addition to weddings, proms/homecoming, and fashions shows, she has also been hired with huge range of requests; some which the general public doesn’t even realize is available such as: Teaching Sessions Competitions (pageants, talents and fitness) SFX for Halloween Video Shoots Women’s Seminars Drag Makeup

MWBH Weight Loss

Meal Planning for Weight Loss Success How many times have you become frustrated with your weight loss progress? Well, I’m sure you already know that diet and exercise are the main ingredients for achieving weight loss, but why is it so damn difficult? I have asked many women which part of the weight loss equation is most challenging and most responded that dieting is a major obstacle--but it doesn’t have to be. Planning is the key if you want to succeed! This is why I encourage meal planning. When done consistently, meal planning will help you to stick to your eating plan, make grocery shopping easier, and even save you time and money. Oh, and did I mention less frustration?

First Determine Your Daily Calorie Limit The key to weight loss is creating a calorie deficit. To lose one pound, a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories would need to be created. The best way to achieve this is through a combination of diet and exercise. Complete the exercise below to determine how many calories you will need to consume each day in order to lose 1-2 pounds per week. As you lose weight and activity becomes easier, you will burn fewer calories performing the same activities. Therefore as you lose weight, you will need to periodically re-calculate your daily calorie limit. A. Start with 354 B. 6.91 x age = __________ C. Subtract B from A and write the answer here __________ D. 9.36 x .45 x weight in pounds = __________ E. 726 x .0254 x height in inches = __________ F. Add D and E and write the answer here __________ G. Select your current physical activity level from the options below and write it here __________ H. Multiply G by F and write the answer here __________ I. Add H and C and write your answer here __________ This is the calories required to maintain your current weight. J. *Subtract 500 from I and write your answer here __________ This is your estimated daily calorie limit for losing 1 pound per week *Note: If you desire to lose 2 pounds per week, in addition to reducing your calorie intake by 500 you can also burn 500 calories through physical activity. If you think your daily calorie limit is too low, you may increase your calories, but at the same time you would need to increase physical activity to burn those extra calories. It is also important to know that consuming less than 1,200 calories per day is not recommended due to possible health risks.

Sedentary 1.00

Low Active 1.12

Active 1.27

Very Active 1.45

Basic Guidelines for Meal Planning It’s important for you to understand that skipping meals is a no-no, especially if you find yourself ransacking the kitchen late in the evening. What I recommend is eating 5-6 meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 2-3 snacks). When planning your 5-6 meals per day, be sure to plan them at the beginning of the week or the day before. By doing this, you will be more inclined to stick to your plan. Also, plan your meals 2-3 hours apart. For example:

If you prefer to count calories, be sure to divide your calories between your meals, allowing no more than 400 calories each for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and no more than 200 calories each for your snacks. You can get creative with divvying up your calories. It’s all up to you, as long as you follow the above guidelines. For example, if your daily calorie limit is 1,500 calories, you may allot 350 calories for breakfast, 350 calories for lunch, and 350 calories for dinner. The remaining 450 calories you may divide among your 3 snacks. If you think your daily calorie limit is too small, you may increase your calories, but at the same time you would need to increase physical activity to burn those extra calories. If you prefer portion control, be sure that half your plate (of regular size) consists of high fiber vegetables, 1/4 whole grains, and 1/4 protein for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and for your snacks choose high fiber fruits and vegetables. There are portion control plates, bowls and lunch containers out there so I would suggest investing in a few if you prefer to go this route.
