Annie Ilonzeh Actress Annie Ilonzeh has graced the big screens for years rocking her beautiful curls with style. Widely known as the first African American Angel on the 2011 revamp of Charlie’s Angels, and her starring role as Maya Ward on General Hospital, her light has continued to shine brightly as she has guest starred on many shows such as Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva, Arrow, ABC Family drama Switched at Birth, and BET’s The Game just to name a few.

B

orn and raised in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas, Annie is the eldest of five sisters. She began taking dance lessons at a young age but quickly learned she was better suited for sports: basketball, soccer and track. “Our house was crazy and loud; there were five of us and we were all involved in sports. Someone always had a game, training or practice,” she says. In high school, Annie discovered her passion for basketball and began taking it very seriously. She set her goals on professional basketball and coaching. Annie earned a college basketball scholarship and played for a few years, but on a visit to Los Angeles in 2006, the idea of an acting career suddenly appealed to her. Without looking back, she moved to Los Angeles. She decided to give herself one year to explore show business. One year soon turned into a few more as she focused on making it in Hollywood. She began working full time as a commercial actress with many national commercials to her credit – McDonald's, Apple, TJ Maxx, Toyota, Ross and Chili's to name a few. In March 2010 she got her big break and was cast as Maya Ward on General Hospital. Annie spends most of her free time in the gym and considers it her “happy place.” She creates her own routines, incorporating moves from her favorite sports such as track,

Photo Credit- Entertainment Weekly boxing and mixed martial arts. Fitness is a major part of her life, and she also spends time with her Chihuahuas Capone and Pacino. She loves Mexican food in moderation, R&B music, and classic movies such as The Sound of Music, The Sandlot and the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Ilonzeh knows she has found her calling in show business, but not just acting. Eventually she plans to expand into writing, producing and directing, plus getting her hair product line in stores nationwide. She knows the sky's the limit! www.MidwestBlackHair.com

Read more to hear about Ilonzeh’s career, life, hair, and more! MWBH: Describe your hair experience in Hollywood? AI: Hollywood has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. I’ve had many different hair styles and my hair has taken many different shapes depending on the projects, and I’ve enjoyed every look. It’s given me the opportunity to explore- one day I have long hair with tracks put in, straight and voluminous, my natural curls, a bobbed wig, or a 3/4 wig and blend the rest. It’s super fun. It’s like dress up for my hair and being in Hollywood, I’ve gotten to experience all types of hair styles which I would have never done on my own. Sometimes the various looks can transform my demeanor and behavior; Curly hair is fun and sassy, where straightened and is tough and strong, but a Photo Credit- Emily Ilonzeh short bob is daring and a bit sneaky. But with that show, since we went Overall, Hollywood embraces my undercover a lot, I was able to play natural look which is good because with fun looks for certain occasions I’m not one to conform or be anyand scenes. AI: Yes, some shows have a clear idea of how they want me, well really my character, to look. Arrow on CW knew immediately that they wanted my character Joanna to have straight hair. Whereas Charlie’s Angels loved the curly hair.

MWBH: What are your favorite products to use to keep your curls moisturized and bouncy? AI: With most woman, but I think especially with women who embrace their natural hair, you have

got to know it down to a science. And I’ve found mine, I’ve figured out the right formula and equation to get it looking on point. The process starts with DermOrganic shampoo and conditioner (sometimes Pantene Pro V naturals), then I put some Argon Oil as a leave init’s very light but also moisturizes, followed by a quarter size amount of Fekkai Luscious Curl Cream to define the curls, and finally I flip upside down and defuse it. ALWAYS uses a defuser, that’s a must for me when I blow dry and the T9 blow dryer is the best. There are times I make my own mixtures, some of this moisturizer, little of this leave-in, a drop of this oil, spray a tad of this on the ends...because not every time is my routine

going to work. Weather changes up my routine a lot but from start to finish that’s generally what I do. MWBH: What has been your favorite role to play so far? AI: My favorite role to date was playing Kate Prince on Charlie’s Angels. She was strong, dominant, smart, sexy, fearless- she had all the characteristics I would love to embody. That show had the right amount of action (fight scenes, big stunts, special effects) and drama that I love. Because I’m the biggest Tom boy ever, I love the physical demands that action shows or movies bring. Even when I was a kid, you couldn’t get me away from any sport, or out of a tree, or find me without cuts and bruises all over me. I’ve always wanted to be an action hero! Although I embrace the action, looking at all the projects I’ve worked on, there hasn’t been one that I didn’t truly enjoy to the fullest. MWBH: Who would you love to work alongside with in a movie or TV show? AI: There’s soooo many people in this business I admire. Not just actors but producers, directors, makeup artist, photographers... But I don’t have 50pages to make my dream list of people I want to work with, so right now I’m obsessed with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wig. They are two leading women that are smart, beautiful, hard working, and absolutely HILARIOUS. I also love Judd Apatow’s work and who love to be in one of his movies sometime soon. I’m a huge

fan of JJ Abrams, genius man, and Lorne Michaels too. Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Merle Streep, Sandra Bullock, Zoe Saldana, the list goes on and on! MWBH: Tell us an interesting fact about you that we would never know. AI: As I mentioned before I’m a mega Tom boy. People who do not know me are always surprised to hear that. Not sure why because it’s literally in my DNA. I grew up playing sports all my life, basketball, soccer, track, and went to college on a basketball scholarship. The arts wasn’t for me at the time, it was all sports, practice, sweats, sneakers, and ponytails for me. When I’m not working I’m normally always in sneakers, hair pulled back, hat and probably in the gym. That’s my second home. But a fun fact about me is I’m working on starting my own hair care line. I’ve been fascinated by hair for years, decades even. Being the oldest of 5girls, there was no way around it, I was always doing hair- cutting, coloring, straightening, curling, braiding, I’ve done it all. Not to mention all my friends so I’ve got years of hair experience under my belt. Now I’m ready to share a brand/line of my own with the world. It’s all still in the making but this is one of my passions. I feel people with natural hair, multi ethnic hair, a variety of textured hair need guidance and are looking for great products. I hope my hair care products will be able to solve that! MWBH: Can you let our readers know what upcoming projects you have, and how we can follow you online? AI: Currently I’m working on Drop Dead Diva on Lifetime which airs on Sundays 9/8c for the next few months. If you’ve missed it, it’s very easy to catch up but there’s many more episodes ahead so please tune in. It’s a great, funny show. And I just wrapped a suspense thriller movie called Dead Real which Lifetime picked up and that will premier in September so keep an eye out for that. The trailers and ads will start up in August. I’ve got my hands in a few things that will surface in the next few months as well, so to stay connected with me and hear all about my twitter and Instagram are @Annieilonzeh (for both). I’m occasionally on Facebook- Annie Ilonzeh, but twitter is my favorite form of social media. www.MidwestBlackHair.com

“The show was made in an effort to not only create opportunities for members of the natural hair community but also to bring more awareness to a topic that no one else seems to be discussing at length. While the series educates others on natural hair, it provides Natties with relatable characters that look just like them. It’s a beautiful thing to watch a show, play, movie or any other type of art form and see yourself reflected there. With natural hair making such a huge comeback since its decline in the late 70s/early 80s, you’d think that more Natties would be featured in TV & film. It’s quite the opposite, and it’s ridiculous. We have to show the mainstream media how wrong they are about conceptions of beauty.” The series discusses topics such as seeking European idealism, standards of beauty, race relations, homosexuality, natural hair in the workplace, acceptance within the Black community and so much

How Do I Get My Hairline to Grow Out and Keep It From Breaking Off? By: Imani Brown

As you are growing out natural hair you might find that you have difficulty keeping a healthy hair line. You might be frustrated if your hair line is always broken off and doesn't seem to grow in. The trouble is likely due to the fact that this is an area of our hair that we are always touching, brushing, picking at, and otherwise abusing in some way. Here are some ideas of what you can do to help keep a healthy hair line: Try to leave your hairline alone. This is really hard to do because this is the first aspect of our hair that we see. Try wearing a stocking headband more often while you try to see if you can let it grow out. However, be careful because sometimes the friction from scarves or headbands can also cause breakage. Make sure the hair is protected with oil before covering it. Get some Jamaican Black Castor oil and apply it daily. If you are wearing your hair natural you can put a little water and then put the castor oil on top of that. It makes it super soft, and the castor oil is supposed to promote growth. This might be referred to as "watering and oiling"... as in after you brush your teeth and wash your face at night, then water and oil your hair. Do it in the morning too if it won't mess up your overall hair style. Do this and you will likely see results in 2 months or so. You should notice your hairline getting thicker. You can usually get the oil at an ethnic market or Jamaican store (depending on where you live, of course) or online. The oil costs about $7 for an 8oz bottle, but lasts a very long time.

40

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - August 2013

Sleep with your hair covered. This is one of the general tips for taking care of our hair, but make sure that the hairline is covered in particular. If you wake up in the morning and your hairline is exposed and frazzled, you know it is been subjected to friction all night from your pillows and possibly from the scarf you were wearing. You'll know you are doing it right if you uncover your hair and your hairline is lying down flat the way you left it the night before. If you roller set your hair, be very careful about how tightly you wrap the hair. Rollers can break off your hair too. (I know, we can't win no matter what we do!) I am a writer and artist with a broad spectrum of interests including hair care, health and general beauty. Please visit our transitioning hair care site for tips and advice on natural hair care. You can also visit our flat iron styling tips site for information on styling tips and hair care product reviews.

Nappturalistic Beauty is about creating a community of fellow Naturals to support and encourage one another along their natural hair journey. EVERYONE is welcomed, all hair types & nationalities. “Beauty starts from within, takes time, patience and dedication. Embracing your natural hair can be a daunting task for some, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes a soulful experience. Nappturalistic Beauty isn’t just about haircare, it’s also about building confidence, knowledge, and friendship.”

46

MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - August 2013

Nappturalistic Beauty was started not too long ago and is changing lives around the country. The search for the perfect product seems to be a common story amonst people of multiple ethnicticities, especially those with natural hair. We recently had a chance to meet the CEO and founder of Nappturalistic Beauty, Latrisa Giles, and were impressed by how simple yet highly effective her product line was. Latrisa Giles is inspiring multitudes of women nationally and internationally to embrace their naturalness and have confidence while doing it. As one of the best sources for Natural HairCare Products, Nappturalistic Beauty was created and is handcrafted with a story of its own. Since its inception, Nappturalistic Beauty, a company owned and operated by Milwaukee native Natural Beauty Sensation, Latrisa Giles has garnered attention from many naturals across the United States & Internationally. Inspired by natural beauty, through her website, Facebook Fan page and appearances across the United States, Latrisa educates and inspires others on the beauty of natural hair, how to care for it, maintain it and wear it confidently while promoting her products that excel in moisturizing and promoting healthy hair growth. She has created a community of naturals to support and encourage each other along their healthy natural hair journeys. How did Nappturalistic Beauty get started? Latrisa Giles, the Owner of Nappturalistic Beauty decided to go back to her Natural Roots a 2nd time around. Before embarking upon this journey, she decided that she wanted to educate herself as much as possible on her Healthy Hair Care Journey so that we she did go Natural, there would be no turning back. After 2 1/2 years of praying, educating and research on the many different aspects of Healthy Hair Care, Latrisa did the Big Chop January 2011. Because of her sensitive skin & scalp, it was very hard to find a hair care product that would work well with her hair. After many failed attempts to find a good hair care product line, Latrisa decided to start mixing her own hair care products. During this transition period, Latrisa lost her job as a HR Director. After many prayers and diligent faith, she decided to start her very own product line which launched October, 2011 and has been growing significantly ever since.

Which of your products is your best seller? Nappturalistic Beauty’s Moisturizing Hair Milk & Hair Growth Serum Blend are our two top Best Selling Products. What top 3 tips would you give someone that is on their natural hair journey? 1). A healthy beautiful head of hair requires an ongoing care routine that starts with nourishment from the Inside Out. Start Eating Healthy Now & drinking ample amounts of water & taking care of your hair, and you’ll reap the benefits for years to come. 2). Exercise not only benefits our shape, but the growth of our hair as well. Hair follicles require a constant optimal blood flow to get nutrients and oxygen that stimulate hair growth. Exercise along with a healthy diet promotes weight loss, plus it helps our hair grow~ 3). The most important step of your haircare regimen is sealing. Sealing means to seal moisture into your hair strands. So, after you wash your hair and put in your leave-in conditioner, it’s very important finish with an oil or butter such as Nappturalistic Beauty’s Hair Growth Serum Blend or Whipped Moisturizing Hair Butter to seal that moisture into your hair.

If you have always chemically straightened or "relaxed" your hair and are thinking about going natural, you might have many many questions about getting started or what to do. Here we have the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions on the topic of transitioning from relaxed to natural hair. Is it possible to have long natural hair? Yes!! As long as you take great care of your hair, condition it on a regular basis and wear protective styles along with keeping it moisturized and free from split ends, anyone can grow long beautiful hair.

on in g

Ba s sic

What are the advantages of going natural? The top advantages of going natural are as follows: • You will have healthier hair and a healthier scalp since you will be free of damaging harsh chemicals. • You will end the abuse on your hair and scalp from chemical burns and chemical smells burning your lungs • You will save money from not going to the salon and paying for expensive relaxers anymore. • You will get to experience your natural hair. This in itself is pretty cool. How do I maintain a long term transition? Just like growing long hair, the best way to maintain a long transition is to wear protective styles, keep hair moisturized, and take great care of it. Make sure that you protect your hair at all times, including when sleeping. You'll also need to introduce new hair care routines as your natural hair begins to grow and overtake your relaxed end. The best thing you can do is adopt a process of moisturizing and twisting your hair on a daily or weekly basis. Other things to make sure of are to: • avoid too much combing, brushing, and manipulation • trim or get your hair trimmed on a regular basis to avoid split ends What is the best way for me to transition without doing the big chop? By following these tips! How do I figure out my hair type? Do a Google search for "African American hair type" to find descriptions of hair types with pictures. Compare your hair to pictures to see if it comes close to one of the hair types indicated. Note that knowing your hair type is helpful so that you can identify the people who will have the best tips to help you figure out which products and styles will work best for your hair. However, it's not crucial to know your hair type precisely, especially if you are doing experimentation on your own. www.MidwestBlackHair.com www.MidwestBlackHair.com

How often should I wash my transitioning hair? When you think about washing your hair you want to consider the cleanliness of your hair and scalp, and also providing moisture. If your hair and scalp feel and smell clean, there is no reason to wash your hair with shampoo. However, the best moisture to provide for your hair is water, so you want to at least rinse or wet your hair often enough so that you are providing enough moisture to your hair. You do not want to wash so often that you are stripping out the natural oils in your hair. So for shampoo washing, once a week is often enough. Rinsing or wetting your hair daily is a good practice. What should I do with my hair after washing? You might worry a lot about how often to wash your hair, but it is how you style your hair after washing or rinsing that makes the difference in how your hair grows or if you experience breakage. Make sure that you deep condition your hair on a regular basis. At least once every 2 weeks. After wetting your hair, you should put in a leave in conditioner, moisturize it and seal in the moisture with a nice natural oil such as shea butter or jojoba oil. Let your hair air dry or put it in a protective hair style. You should avoid using heat and also avoid manipulating your hair a lot. What if I only have 1, 2, 3, 4 inches or less of natural hair? Try doing a twist style. This will stretch your hair out and can be a very lovely alternative to wearing wraps or just an afro.

How do I moisturize and seal transitioning hair? The best way to moisturize your hair is to wash or rinse it, then apply a thick cream conditioner to moisturize, then seal the moisture in with a natural oil. Great oils to use are jojoba oil, olive oil, grape seed oil, shea butter, coconut oil or any other natural oils. Additionally, a great way to seal the hair is to braid or twist it after applying the moisturizing treatment. These protective styles "lock in" the product and allow it to really absorb into your hair. What is the best way to keep my natural hair moisturized? After you do a moisturizing treatment, you might find that your hair quickly absorbs the moisture and then dries out again. Make sure that you have sealed in your moisture with the right oil that works for your hair. You may have to experiment with different oils to find the right one for you. After sealing it, you should cover your hair with a scarf, braid it, or twist it until it dries. Binding up your hair helps it to absorb and retain moisture. When you leave your hair "out" to dry freely, it may be affected by friction of brushing against pillows, car head rests or even just the air, and this friction can cause dryness.

What are some of the best products for kinky hair or when transitioning from relaxed to natural hair? The best products for any hair are natural products and homemade products made from natural oils. You can make your own hair butters out of shea or mango butter and mixing them with olive, jojoba, avocado, or other natural oils. Water is also a great and often over looked hair "product". What can I do about a dry, flaky, itchy scalp? Sometimes our inspiration for going natural in the first place is the damage we see with our scalp. If your scalp is dry and flaky or even itchy, you will find that applying natural oils and doing occasional scalp massage will greatly improve the condition of your scalp. Also keep your scalp clean, well moisturized and oiled to help it to heal quickly. You might also try adding fish oil supplements to your diet and eating more green leafy vegetables. Avoid using harsh dandruff shampoos and/or products with alcohol in them. You might see temporary relief using these products, but you'll find that your scalp will not heal in the long run.

can stretch them by adding a little water, stretching them out, then allowing them to dry. If you want to show off your hair's fullness in a curly style, you can stretch it by doing a twist or braid out style.

Are you worried about the impact and safety of skin care cosmetics and makeup on your face? Here are some questions that are frequently asked. Are content labels important? Indeed! Always read them very carefully. The government regulations say that a product label must reveal the following:

• What the cosmetic is • Any information that is important to know • The quantity the package contains • What company manufactures the item or distributes it In addition, if it is retailed to consumers, there must be a list of the product's ingredients. Normally this is on the label of the container or on a box that contains the container. Obviously, it should be in an area where you can see it when you are considering purchasing it.

It is important to follow directions on labels carefully, including all "Cautions" and "Warnings." For instance, it is important to know if getting a cosmetic in your eye could cause damage or what the signs of allergic reactions would be. What about "testers" at cosmetic sales counters? Are they OK to use? Many women use testers at cosmetic and makeup sales counters or at home makeup parties.
