My natural hair gets dry so quickly throughout the day. How can I get it to stay moisturized? Do you have any product recommendations?

MWBH: I certainly understand what you mean. With natural hair, it can start out one way in the morning and by the time you get to work, school, or the function you’re attending, you hair has absorbed the product completely. For this question, the answer can vary based on the texted of your hair and the style that you would like to achieve. But generally for moisture retention, here are a few things that work for me with my natural hair and that I also use for my natural hair clients that you may try: • Hot Oil Treatment- For dry hair, you may shampoo,rinse, then use a hot oil conditioning treatment under a plastic cap for 20 mins or so. During this process, the oils goes into the hair, which will help hair with moisture and to bring out its natural shine. • Moisturizing Spray- Mist hair with a leave in moisturizing spray, which will help to manipulate hair into your desired style, while helping hair to be less dry. • Moisturizing Crème- Use a leave in moisturizing crème for more manageable hair and to keep hair moist. For Specific product recommendations based hair type and desired outcome, you may visit www.SalonMiquelle.com My hair seems to be growing but my edges stay thin and don’t seem to grow at all. What can I do to get them thicker and start growing again?

MWBH: For hair that is slow to grow, you may try massaging the scalp on a frequent basis. Massage your scalp very vigorously around your hairline, which should cause increased blood flow to that area and this may aid in stimulating hair growth. Also, I would advise not to use any chemicals in the affected area, as this may inhibit the growth of the hair in the already thin area, additionally, do not pull

hair tight, to avoid further hair loss. If the hair does not appear to be growing at all in those spots, it may be severly damaged or there could be some other issues as well. I would advise if it is not growing at all, that you see your physician, to properly determine what the cause could be. My hair is currently dark brown, and I want to get my hair dyed very light. Before I commit to this drastic change, what type of upkeep should I expect to keep my hair healthy after it is dyed? MWBH: Hair that is colored or lightened can be beautiful and healthy hair when cared for. In my opinion, it is beneficial to be sure that you have a healthy head of hair that is in great condition to begin with. So, if the condition of the hair is good (no shedding, breakage, or damage), your professional hair stylist may agree that he or she will proceed with a hair color application. If the hair color you desire is considerably lighter than your current shade, it is a possibility that your stylist may pre lighten your hair in

order to achieve the color that you desire. Hair that has been colored or lightened, may require extra care. If it is extremely light, you may require additional moisture to be added back to the hair. Be sure to use a shampoo that is recommended for color treated hair (to ensure longer lasting color with less fading) and use a moisturizing conditioning treatment which will assist with adding the moisture back to your hair (please see your stylist for a shampoo and conditioning treatment recommendation based on your hair, texture, and styling choice). If you use heat on your hair, it’s also great to use an oil based product or a serum before heat, which will provide protection. However, if it is determined that your hair is not completely healthy and has damage, shedding, or breakage, please DO NOT proceed with hair color or any type of chemical treatment. In this case it is best to see your Stylist to develop and conditioning and hair care regimen which will help you achieve a healthy head of hair to prepare for your desired hair color change and to keep the hair in its best condition.

Cover hair with a satin scarf to retain moisture and to keep the pin curls in place. Recently there has been a fad of kids wearing clip in colored extensions. Is that safe for my daughter’s hair?

MWBH: Clip in extensions can be a fun way to add hair for a quick style change. I don’t see the clip in extensions causing a problem, as long as it’s not worn for an extended period of time. Its okay to wear the clip ins for a few days or so for a style change. When I get my hair roller set, I have a hard time keeping my curls But, if she enjoys that look and wants to keep them for an extended for the 2 week period before my period, it may be better to find some next appointment. What advice can you give me to help my curls other type of attachment method because if worn too long and on a stay looking nice? continual basis, the area where the clips are may cause damage to the MWBH: To keep your curls, I find hair or irritate the scalp. that it works great to pin curl the

As a child, Karen Byrd remembers playing with dolls that where beautiful. But they never looked like her. “Their hair, features and skin tones did not match mine. I always wondered - if my Barbie doll is beautiful and it doesn’t look like me… does that mean that I am not pretty?” This is a question she struggled with through her childhood into early adulthood. “Even though I had an amazing mom that always told me how beautiful I was, all the images around me in the media contradicted this message. And seeing other young women in my community that did value their own beauty also did not help.”

“As an adult, while shopping with my own daughters, I was shocked to find that stores still did not have dolls that reflected the beauty of the ethnic community. There were a few dolls that would surface every now and again, but it was not very often. On the average, a young girl of an ethnic cultural background could not go to just any store and find a doll that looks like her. This is something that needs to change.” There has been a continuous problem in our community where we don’t seem to value our own beauty, history or heritage. It is something that has been a problem for a very long time. In articles, videos and news stories such as “Black Girls Want White Dolls”, “What a Doll Tells Us

About Race”, “Black Doll White Doll & A Girl Like Me” - it is apparent that this is something that affects many children and adults; and that there is a need for positive community change. There is a need for our young girls to be able to have dolls that look like them. It is something that affects their self-esteem and confidence, and how they view themselves from an early age. There have been quite a few studies done (as noted above) that show that African American boys and girls often think of black dolls as bad and white dolls as good. Of course, this is not something that the parent is teaching their child. So why are they getting these mixed messages about good and bad skin color, or good and bad hair? It all has to do with the images they see as they

grow up. If a child is constantly looking at images, dolls, television, books and magazines - and only seeing beauty as something or someone with non-ethnic features and someone that has long, straight hair - then they are going to assume that this is what beauty is. It is something that has hurt our young people for centuries. But each day we learn that it is important to show them and teach them that their beauty is indeed beautiful. “I have wanted to take on the project of customizing dolls hair, to have the look and feel of styles and textures of African American & Mulit-Cultural (ethnic) women and girls, for a long time.” From this came the Natural Girls United project that has now turned into a business, and is something that she hopes will

Her goal is to have a doll line that ranges in skin tones from a light to dark complexions. “I would like for there to be a variety of hair styles that represent the styles that can be seen in many ethnic cultures – Dreadlocks, Sisterloc’s, Loc’s, Afro’s, Braids, Twist, Cornrows, Curls and more.” The doll’s features should also represent the girls and women from ethnic backgrounds. Empowerment is a big driving force behind this line of dolls with customized hair. Each doll will hopefully send a message of hope. It is a goal to have dolls that are doctors, artist, business women, athletes, teachers and more. A little girl should be able to look at their doll and say my doll looks like me and I want to be a doctor just like my doll when I grow up.

Meena Singh, MD

Dr. Meena Singh is a boardcertified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon. She attended Harvard Medical School, trained at the Mayo Clinic, and completed a surgical fellowship in New York City, in which she became trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, as well as cosmetic dermatology procedures, such as Botox, lasers, and fillers. She also completed a fellowship with the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery under world-renowned surgeon Dr. Marc Avram, and was trained in all hair transplantation techniques, including strip excision and manual/motorized/robotic follicular unit extraction, as well as transplanting into scarring alopecias. She also specializes in medical treatments for hair loss of all types. Dr. Singh also has an interest in treating ethnic skin/skin of color. Dr. Singh has performed clinical trials in laser hair stimulation, as well as studies in hair transplantation for scarring and non-scarring forms of hair loss. She has also performed investigative studies on skin cancer in transplant recipients, as well as tissue engineering. She has numerous publications in many peer-reviewed dermatology journals, book chapters, and has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine. She is a reviewer for the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology and the Dermatologic Surgery journal. Her blog articles have also been published in online periodicals. Dr. Singh has also been featured on the cover of New York Times. We had a chance to get to know Dr. Meena Singh as well as ask some questions about skin and hair issues within the African American Community. MWBH: What hair & skin issues do you see the most in the African American community? Dr. Singh: African Americans seek dermatologic treatment for different reasons than their lighter-skinned counterparts. Studies have shown that the most common concerns for an initial dermatologic visit are hair loss, acne, discoloration, and eczema. Hair loss is the primary concern. The most common type of hair loss in the community by far is traction alopecia. This is a type of hair loss caused by tight hair styling practices. The scalp senses trauma to the hair follicle and surrounding tissues, which MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE December2013 52leads to inflammation and -loss of the hair follicle over time.

MWBH: How can those issues be treated? Dr. Singh: Hair loss in particular is treated based on the diagnosis. Thus, proper diagnosis is imperative. Evaluation for hair loss by a dermatologist entails a detailed history and scalp examination and often laboratory evaluation and scalp biopsy. The most important aspect of treatment for traction alopecia is to stop the traumatic hairstyling practices. Often it is difficult to convince a patient to stop wearing tight braids, weaves, and extensions because now they are using these hairstyles to cover their areas of hairloss. Any perception of tenderness on the scalp is a sign of inflammation and traumatic hairstyle. Medical treatment for traction alopecia entails a combination of low potency steroid injections to the area to decrease inflammation around the follicle, as well as topical minoxidil to directly stimulate the hairs to regrow. If the hairs no longer have regrowth potential, then hair transplantation should be performed to restore the hair line. With regards to acne, I prefer to treat aggressively, especially in African-Americans. African-Americans are more likely to experience disfiguring scarring and discoloration due to the acne. Because the causes of acne are multifactorial, treatment typically includes a combination of oral and/or topical antibiotics, topical combination benzoyl peroxide products, and a topical retinoid. If a patient is experiencing, discoloration (termed post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), then I recommend adding glycolic acid chemical peels in addition.

MWBH: What tips can you give our readers to achieve and retain healthy skin? Dr. Singh: The most important aspect of healthy skin care is decreasing damage to the skin. Everyone should wear sunscreen daily. Dark brown skin has a natural SPF of about 13. However, African-Americans still experience aging due to the effects of the sun. I recommend adding a moisturizer with sunscreen every morning. In addition, I recommend glycolic acid cleansers to help brighten and even the tone, as well as nightly use of a topical retinoid product. Retinoids help decrease sun damage, exfoliate and brighten the skin, even tone, and increase collagen production. MWBH: Are their contributing factors to hair loss that we can try to avoid? And if so what are they? Dr. Singh: The most common contributing factor to traction alopecia is tight hairstyling practices. Any tenderness is a sign of inflammation and should be avoided. That does not mean completely avoid braids, weaves, and extensions. Just encourage your hairstylist not to pull as tightly. No matter what type of hair loss you experience, prompt evaluation is key. If there is any potential for hair regrowth, it is best to start treatment as soon as hair loss is noted.

MWBH: What inspired you to go into the medical field that you are in? Dr. Singh: Only about 1-2% of dermatologists are AfricanAmerican; therefore, there are few dermatologists that specialize in the ethnic skin and hair. Dermatologic treatment for African Americans takes different considerations than treating lighterskinned individuals. Therefore, I wanted to establish expertise in an underserved field. In addition, I love surgery and dermatology afforded me the ability to perform multiple procedures, including hair transplantation, skin cancer surgery, facial reconstruction, and cosmetic procedures, such as botox and fillers. MWBH: What advice can you give to our younger readers that may be looking to go into the professional field of medicine? Dr. Singh: I was on the admissions committee at Harvard Medical School, so I have a unique perspective on what attributes are needed to get into medical school. These days most applicants are going to have stellar grades, excellent MCAT scores, leadership in organizations, volunteer work, and research. I would advise premedical students to at least have those aspects. If you are weak in one of those categories, do extra in the other categories. Give the admissions committee as little reason to put you in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;noâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pile as possible. Find a good mentor and apply broadly. This may mean applying to D.O. programs or M.D. programs in the Caribbean.

MWBH: Are their any over the counter products that you would recommend to keep skin and hair healthy? Dr. Singh: Face: moisturizers with sunscreen and glycolic acid cleansers Extremities: Emollient moisturizers such as Vanicream, Aquaphor, Eucerin, Cetaphil, and CeraVe

Believe it or not, you do not have to be an artist to do your own nail designs. However, nail designs are a type of art and like art, you start off with basic shapes and keep adding details along the way. And also like art, simplicity is visually pleasing. Here are a few simple nail designs you can try yourself. If you are a beginner, start with the easy ones first to get practice. If you are a beginner or an expertise and desire more complex designs with ease, try Konad. Random Lines- This look may be the easiest to achieve because of its abstract nature. To do, apply one coat of colored nail polish to your nails. My suggestion is red. If you are giving yourself a pedicure, you only have to apply the nail design to each of your big toes. Nail art brushes that you find at any beauty store are the easiest to use when doing nail designs, but if you do not have one, regular nail polish will do. You can also use a toothpick. Take black nail polish and make thin, random strokes that start at the base of your nail and shoot up from there. It is important to have very little nail polish on the brush so that you do not end up with globs on your nail. It is also important that your lines are thin. Your lines can start from the same point each time or you can have the lines come from different places. Two-three black lines per nail should do it. Apply a coat of clear nail polish and you are done!

Flowers- Flowers are a good starting point because if you are a beginner, your accidents can easily be made into flowers. To start, choose what color you want the middle of your flower to be. Yellow and white are popular colors. Then, place a dab of nail polish on your nail. Choose a nail color for the actual flower and make several dabs around the first dab you made. You have now created a flower. Do this with each nail. Creating flowers to the side of the nail look more professional. You do have one more option. Using a toothpick or a thin nail art brush, fill in a circle for the center of the flower. Then draw small circles or ovals around it to create a flower. You do not have to fill in the circles with nail color. You can simply draw a center and have a bunch of small lines emanating from a central point. With this method, you only have to use one color, instead of two, to create your flowers. It is your preference. French Manicure or PedicureThe French manicure is relatively simple, but following the natural curve of the nail is challenging. First, apply a coat of clear nail

polish to each nail. Then take white nail color and apply it to only the tips of your nails. Some people like to use nail art brushes-those nail polishes in a skinny bottle that come with a skinny brush. It is easier to form a curve with these brushes, but they are not necessary. You can sweep the white nail color across each nail from left to right. The other option is to apply the white nail polish just like you were applying nail polish to the entire nail. In other words, apply the nail color the long way but only do the tips. Either way works, and there are now French manicure pens available to make the process even easier. Don't give up. Do all of your nails and you will be surprised at how well they turn out. They may not be perfect, but most people will be looking at them from a distance. For a pedicure, you can get away with only having nail designs on your big toe. For hands, you can cover any mistakes by purchasing a nail art brush in silver. Run the silver polish along the curve where the clear nail polish meets the white nail polish. This will form a silver line that will hide your mistakes and add an air of sophistication as well. Apply one more coat of clear

nail color and you're done. French Manicure with Gems- Nail decals are a simple and easy way to make your nails look professional. To do, give yourself a French manicure or pedicure. Pick up one of your nail gems with a pair of tweezers and place it on top of your nail. You can choose to place just one nail decal, or several, on each nail. Watermelon Surprise- This nail design may look difficult, but remember that it is only a compilation of basic shapes. Apply pink nail color to all of your nails. Polish the tips of your nails with an off white or pearl color. Using a nail art brush or toothpick, trace the other edge of your nail with dark green nail color. You should now have a thin, green line along the outside of your nail. Add 4 black dots to each corner of the nail and one black dot in the middle and you are finished. Tips for the Avid Weave-Wearer

very woman loves a good weave! Oh yes, that cannot be denied! And when we get that magnificent hair installed, Lord knows we become best friends with our mirrors. Jesus couldn’t even terminate that long, intense gaze we give the mirror as we model our newly attached weaves. As we strut around in our Indian extensions, we create excuses to go out because ‘we are feeling ourselves.’ At that moment, in our weaveconsumed minds, the world is bowing down to us and pulling out the catwalk to witness our 28 inches of Brazilian hair sway back and forth. Let’s just say that if for some apocalyptic reason Black women decided to divorce sew-ins, clip-ins, quick-weaves, etc. the Black hair industry would suffer massively and contemplate suicide. The moral of the story is that women, especially

African-American women, have developed such amazing bonds with their hair, they fail to consider all aspects concerning ‘the weave’. With that in mind, I am sharing my hair experiences as an avid weavewearer and providing five good tips to ponder before the lengthy weave process with your favorite beautician begins. Let’s get started!

Tip number one: With social media dominating the world, it’s easy to get caught up in satisfying our desires, rather than satisfying our needs. These commercials, videos, Instagram pictures, etc., subconsciously tell us that if we don’t invest in expensive hair, we are not good enough. Never feel as if you need to have the most expensive type of hair because many women on Twitter or Instagram choose to rock that kind of hair. In general, purchase something or acquire something because you actually want the product, not because you feel pressure from anyone or any

social network. Also, don’t ever feel you can validate yourself through costly hair; self-love is imperative!

Tip number two: Let’s be logical. Yes, weave-wearing women, we love to buy a nice, expensive weave (usually better quality weaves are more expensive, but not always the case), but at some point, if you have to choose buying Peruvian hair over making your car payment, then you are thinking quite illogically. Unless you’re a socialite like Teyana Taylor, and it’s nothing to buy some good virgin hair or you reside in a city, where raining money is the norm, college women like me or other economically restricted women in general, must recognize our financial limits and be willing to wear that hair for another three weeks (maintenance is key).

Tip number three: Do your research and you will find that you can buy quality hair for a reasonable price. I always do my research

via YouTube hair reviews before buying my hair. This way I can watch numerous reviews, observe the hair quality, learn about the prices, and discover other women’s experiences with the same hair. Simply searching for a specific type of hair on Google can provide you with extensive hair reviews. For instance, with research, you can be warned if hair sheds. On the other hand, when you are aware the hair sheds, you can take the proper measures to maintain the hair, such as sealing the wefts or making a wig (there are plenty of YouTube tutorials that will show you how to make a wig). In essence, doing research can save you a lot of money, and when you purchase your hair, you know exactly what you’re buying. With research, I have discovered Brazilian hair online for a much cheaper price.

Tip number four: Be prepared to maintain the hair. Unless you’re rocking Bella Dream Hair,

proper maintenance is necessary to keep that weave looking beautiful. This involves buying the proper products in advance to sustain the hair. If you are investing in Deep Malaysian Curly hair, try to buy a curling activator such as ‘Organix Moroccan Curling Perfection Defining Cream’ to ensure the curls hold up. This concept correlates with tip number three. Research products that will improve and sustain the curl pattern and texture of the extensions. If you’re not too fond of one way of maintenance, don’t worry because there are plenty of alternatives. Maintenance equals longevity.

Tip number five: You still have to take care of your own hair. Just because I have a bomb weave, doesn’t mean I can neglect my own hair. When wearing a weave, you must think about alternative ways to maintain the strength, texture, and moisture of your hair. For example, wearing a wig gives you the

flexibility to remove the wig, wash your hair, and apply proper oils and creams to ensure growth. On the other hand, because a sew-in is attached to your hair, you have to wash your hair more frequently. Remember maintaining your extensions are important, but taking care of your own God-given hair is even more important!
