MWBH Hair Care
Expands Into Sally Beauty Supply
C
oined a “beauty pioneer” at the age of 26, Rochelle Graham has felt a connection with nature since her early countryside childhood with her herbalist grandmother in Jamaica. The renowned beauty vlogger veteran’s Alikay Naturals hair care products are composed of the richest natural & organic ingredients that use its healing properties and natural humectants to define curls, while nourishing and replenishing moisture from root to tip. No sulfates, no mineral oils, no alcohol and no petroleum. (www.alikaynaturals.com). “Alikay Naturals has been experiencing tremendous growth over the last several months and adding to that momentum, we are happy to announce the brand’s expansion into Sally Beauty Supply,” shares Rochelle Graham, Alikay Naturals CEO and Co-Founder. Integrating the images of women of different races with textured hair ranging from kinky to curly with the cultivation of a shared sense of identity has enabled Alikay Naturals to resonate with consumers in a rapidly growing niche market. Sally Beauty currently owns and
16 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2015/March2015
operates more than 2,800 Sally Beauty Supply stores worldwide; including stores in every state in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. The Alikay Naturals hair products will be added to the inventory of over 7,000 professional quality products for hair, skin and nails offered to Sally Beauty Supply retail customers and salon professionals. January 2015 will mark the debut of Alikay Natural’s Moisture Rich Hair Parfait, Lemongrass Leave-In Conditioner and Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil in select Sally Beauty Supply stores. “Being featured on the shelves of the largest retailer of professional beauty supplies is a part of an ongoing expansion plan set forth by Alikay Naturals that encompasses a heavyweight marketing, sales and communications platform targeting major territories,” explains Graham. With 60% of the world population being made up of curly haired individuals, mainstream retail outlets are taking notice of the increased demand that has sparked the emergence of curly hair care groups and elaborate natural hair expos. Once hard-to-find products designed specifically for curly hair and kinky hair types are now stocked on the shelves of mass market retail chains. A well-recognized authority on hair care and a frequent guest at beauty industry events, Graham expanded Alikay Naturals market share through an unconventional retail strategy which reaches consumers with social media based grassroots marketing techniques that emphasize the value of the customer’s current needs while putting a high level of importance on what the customer will want in the future. YouTube played a key role in the brand’s launch in 2009, thus Alikay Naturals wants to keep social media at the brand’s core as a way to keep customers connected and provide the hair care support for which Alikay Naturals is so well known. “We intend to build on the momentum set forth by our mass market expansion, while staying true to our Black Onyx roots and continuing to offer quality products that deliver solid results,” says Demond Campbell, Alikay Naturals Co-Founder.

cience & technology have revolutionized how women interact with their hair. More and more beauty industry growth is being powered by the broader access both give to creating as well as promoting new beauty products. This ongoing surge in technology is making it possible for the type of rapid advancement in the beauty arena that is sparking massive new beauty product growth. After years of being challenged by limited resources for their hair, women of color are now in a position where they have a much broader selection of products and resources for nurturing their tresses. Knowing the right products to use for their hair type paired with the right stylist has been the solution to those age old challenges. With beauty now being a question of science, long gone are the days when we only went to salons just for a cut, process and manicure. For salons and hair care brands, new technology means increased inquiries from label conscious consumers with palm held access to the latest trends. According to IBM Report, 78-84% of consumers rely on their social networks when

researching new products/services. Aiming to solve a need for a centralized online community resource in the multi-billion dollar market, Techturized Inc. is the brainchild of Georgia Tech alumnae. Co-founders Candace Mitchell and Chanel Martin’s Myavana platform is the first online social hair and style network developed with the express goal of helping women achieve hair nirvana. A computer scientist and chemical engineer, Mitchell & Martin saw an opportunity to give women a platform to share haircare and hairstyle knowledge. “The passion that women have for their products makes the beauty industry such an emotionally charged industry,” shares Mitchell & Martin. “For women, hair represents confidence, freedom, attitude, and self-expression. YouTube and blogs are great resources that tap into that passion while enabling women to gain more knowledge on hair care trends, but women may not be aware of what their resources are or who to follow. Myavana is a central resource established to simplify this process, whether it be finding a salon or stylist in your local city or receiving

Myavana members can jumpstart their personalized hair care plan by submitting their hair strand to be analyzed in the Myavana team’s lab. Users have the ability to upload hairstyles, share beauty tips (including information about styling products and preferred salons), and styling techniques. Users can follow desired hairstyles by "Girlfriending" other users who post pictures with that style. MWBH Eyelashes 101
The Eyelash Growth Process By Mikaela Hudson
Y
our eyelashes play an important role in protecting your eyes, such that it keeps dust and other foreign matter away from them. They also serve as a warning mechanism whenever something is moving toward your eye, letting it close as a precautionary measure. And more than the practical function, your lashes serve a cosmetic purpose, beautifying your eyes and face. Your lashes can be lost whenever you apply mascara, or whenever you use your trusty eyelash curler. It is normal for them to fall out, as it is for other hairs on your body. They are then replaced by other growing hairs. However, your lashes have a growth cycle that varies from those of your scalp hair. Just like all human hairs, there are three stages of eyelash growth and development. Here they are: 1. Anagen phase - The active growing phase, which lasts 30 to 45 days. It makes it possible for lashes to stay short, or far shorter than the two to six years of scalp hair growth. During this phase, the hair will stay growing and will avoid falling out unless you pluck, pull, or force it out. 2. Catagen phase - It's the transition phase of your lashes, where it is no longer growing. The follicle is no longer making hair during this stage. If your lashes fall out during this twoto three-week period, it will not grow back until catagen is over. 28 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2015/March 2015
3. Telogen phase - It is during this phase that your eyelashes rest for about 100 days before they fall out. At this stage, even mildly tugging on an eyelash may cause it to fall out earlier. Losing your lashes during telogen, however, also signals the faster growth of new lashes due to the disturbed hair growth cycle. Your eyelashes will fall out but will also eventually grow back. It can take a few weeks to months, depending on when they were lost. This is a simple explanation of the eyelash growth process, where using a high-quality eyelash growth serum may interfere in a positive way. This product, a mix of botanical, nutrient, and chemical ingredients, may cause lash fullness and lengthening in a period of time with regular use. But it is not just any product you should use, just like you shouldn't rub or tag away at your lashes. Ensure optimal safety and effectiveness by choosing an [http://www.lashreviews.com/]eyelash growth serum or conditioner backed by a reputable manufacturer and with positive customer reviews and feedback in place. Mikaela Hudson has been involved in eyelash reviews for 6 years. I am a freelance writer and blogger living in United States. It's a pleasure sharing such information with others. I'd describe myself as a passionate, honest, positive thinker and natural health enthusiast. Article Source: The Eyelash Growth Process

Top 4 Curly Hair Myths
Hairstylist | Mr. Don Pittman Salon | Volumes Salon Make Up Artist | BeatbyAlexismaire Photographer | Don Pittman/www.MrDonPhotos.com Model | Tiffany Bell
By Heather Cummings
W
e have heard a lot of myths about curly hair and some of them are downright funny. However, some actually make us wonder if they are true, and if they are not, we wonder where they came from and if there is a truth behind them. But more than anything, of course we want to know how we should adjust our care regimen based them in case they are true right? Well, here are our top 4 myths. Do add the ones you know right down there at the comments section so we can trade secrets okay?
MYTH 1: CONSTANT WASHING DRIES OUT CURLY HAIR. Fact: Washing 1-3 times a week is actually good for curly hair. It is the added chemicals (e.g. sulfate) in shampoo that can cause damage or dryness. In fact, you should wash regularly to keep your hair from becoming brittle and dry. Why? First, washing clears your scalp and hair of product residue that can stunt growth and cause damage. This is especially true if you use products that contain mineral oil, petroleum, or alcohol. Second, a clean scalp keeps your natural oils (or sebum) on the flow; these oils work as natural hair moisturizer that prevent brittle and dry. So yes, water is good for curly hair; but steer clear of harsh chemicals from certain shampoos! MYTH 2: TWISTS, BRAIDS AND WEAVES CAUSE ALOPECIA OR HAIR LOSS. Fact: Ironically, many use these hairstyles as protective styling; not to mention, they look fab and trendy. But yes, they may indirectly cause hair loss. How? If your braids are too tight and are worn too long, hair pulling can obviously cause stress and damage to your hair. But no, the hairstyles in themselves do not cause alopecia. Want to keep your Havana Twists without losing precious hair? Don't do them too tight (or tell your stylist not to). Give your hair breaks every few weeks as well by alternating loose hairstyles with braided ones. So yes, water is good for curly hair; but steer clear of harsh chemicals from certain shampoos! MYTH 3: CURLY HAIR GROWS SLOWER COMPARED TO STRAIGHT OR WAVY HAIR. Fact: Race has nothing to do with how fast a person's hair grows. We can expect it to grow at Ÿ to ½ inch per month but since curly hair does not grow straight down-but in curls-so it seems to grow slower than straight hair. One other common problem is when not properly cared for, kinky hair is more prone to drying and damage. So if you want to it grow longer that is free from split ends and damage, proper care is important. MYTH 4: CURLY HAIR IS HARDER TO MANAGE COMPARED TO RELAXED HAIR. Fact: This feels especially true if you are transitioning from relaxed hair to natural-because you've gotten used to straight hair.
Curly hair seems to require unique attention since it is prone to frizz and damage but think about it-so does thin straight or colored hair! Managing curls is not hard; it is just different. Simply begin by practicing the basics of caring for naturally curly hair, and it soon becomes as easy as habit. The deception with relaxed hair is that it may feel easy to comb and style but then the chemical treatment also make it more fragile, damage prone, and challenging to maintain. So, have you got your own list of curly hair myths to debunk? Don't keep them to yourself. Go right ahead and share it with the CurlKit community. Leave a comment and share some love. CurlKit is an established online subscription service for naturally curly hair. We deliver quality samples each month w/ Exclusive Video Tutorials, Styles, Routines and more. HEALTH
MWBH Weight Loss
“Why is it so hard for me to eat healthy?” By Jacquelyn Hollister
W
e all know that a healthy diet and regular exercise are important parts of a healthy lifestyle, but eating healthy seems to be the most difficult part of the equation. Why is this? Well, if you have a busy lifestyle, you probably don't have time to cook healthy meals. For the most part, you may rely heavily on convenience foods that you can either grab from a vending machine while at work, pop into the oven or microwave while at home, or grab from the closest fast food joint while you’re out. If this is the case for you, then planning ahead is very important. Another reason is that you may have a hard time dealing with emotional issues which may stem from money problems or relationship issues with your Higher Power, yourself, your spouse, and/or others. As a result, you find yourself turning to food on a regular basis for comfort in order to fill the void. This is called emotional eating, and creating a plan of action to tackle that money problem or relationship issue is the key if you want to move beyond this seemingly stagnant time in your life. 36 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2015/March 2015
Have you ever considered your environment to be a potential hindrance to eating healthier? This would include your physical environment as well as the people in it. Does your kitchen reflect your healthier lifestyle? Is the energy-draining clutter in and around your home too overwhelming for you to even think about pursuing a healthier lifestyle? Do you have friends, family, or co-workers who do not support your attempts at a healthier lifestyle? Are you surrounded by constant negativity? If so, then it is important for you to create a plan of action for developing a more peaceful and energizing environment. Jacquelyn Hollister, founder of Her Mind & Body and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, is a certified health coach who specializes in weight loss. Jacquelyn helps women who desire to lose weight to improve their eating habits, develop enthusiasm towards physical fitness, and employ simple techniques for reducing stress in their lives. The specially formulated line, consisting of shampoo, leave-in conditioner and a protective restoring balm, was created to nourish and treat both natural or relaxed hair of women wearing protective styles, such as sew-ins, braids or wigs. The line also contains fortifying and conditioning ingredients to maximize the growth, retention and strength of hair follicles, which in turn leaves wearers with full healthy and thick hair. "Most women experience extensive breakage and dryness of their natural or relaxed hair when wearing protective styles. Know About Laser Hair Removal By Saqlain Ali Shah
L
aser hair removal has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. It is not a surgical process as there is no cutting and stitching involved. Laser hair removal involves the use of pulsing laser beams to burn hair follicles. The process takes only a few minutes but removes the hair follicle from the face, neck, chest, back and other body parts. It is a safe procedure with high success rate. Federal Drug Authority has approved laser hair removal as safe for humans and the procedure can be carried out by dermatologists as well as trained skincare specialists. The Science behind Laser Hair Removal Laser hair removal uses selective photothermolysis technology to remove hair follicles. The technology sends high speed laser pulses into the skin that only targets those tissues with dark matter i.e. melanin. The laser beam does not target tissues surrounding that particular one and don't cause skin damage. Melanin is responsible for giving the hair and skin its particular color. Thus targeting melanin removes its pigmentation and the hair stops to grow. You need multiple laser therapy sessions to completely remove the
hair growth. Does it Work? You cannot get the best results with a single laser removal session. Success depends on a number of factors. First is the level of hair growth and the area you want to target. Skin color also plays an important role. Excessive hair growth caused by hormonal imbalance may not be fully removed. There are different types of lasers for different skin colors and tones. Those with darker skin many have to undergo a completely different laser therapy than those with lighter skin. Results also depend on the number of sessions a person undergoes in a year and the interval between two sessions. You cannot ensure hair removal from your face if you only get an annual laser therapy. Still, laser technology has helped millions of people remove unwanted hair. Success ratio is as high as 90 percent and you will get major improvement as long as you undergo regular sessions. Where to undergo the Therapy? FDA does not specifically ask for doctors to perform laser removal. The procedure can be carried out at

salons and skincare facilities as well. The only requirement is the experience and necessary certification required to perform the therapy. It is a good idea to seek the advice of a dermatologist before undergoing the therapy. You will be able to identify the exact skin tone and nature of hair growth. Dermatologists can also advice you about the right type of laser beam to be used to ensure full hair removal. Side Effects Laser hair removal is a safe procedure. Most people do not develop any symptoms except for minor rash or burning sensation at the time of therapy. You can ice the area after the therapy or use numbing creams. The burning sensation will subside within an hour of therapy. Laser hair removal is a safe and surefire way of eliminating unwanted hair. It is also affordable when compared to expensive cosmetic surgery procedures. Lamecia King: “Reconditioning Your Self-Confidence” Heartening, encouraging, and uplifting, is how I describe Lamecia Smith who is in the business of making people feel better about themselves. “It comes natural for me to help others,” says Smith, owner of the 3-year old Zha’Zar Hair Loss Studio in Atlanta, Georgia. “I was raised that way, so I do it from the heart, not for the money or the fame.” A trained medical assistant, certified nursing assistant, licensed hair stylist, and non-surgical hair loss replacement specialist, Smith owned and operated a beauty salon for numerous years. In the midst of styling hair and getting to know her customers, she recognized that a large majority of her business came from customers who were experiencing hair loss due to health issues. With a genuine concern, this initiated her interest in researching cancer, alopecia, thyroids, diabetes, lupus, and other medical conditions as they pertain to balding. In an effort to give back, Smith revamped her mission to include both physical appearance and emotional healing. Henceforth, she became a certified facilitator of the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good Feel Better” program. Smith was trained and certified by the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and the Professional Beauty Association, and works to bring self-confidence back to individuals who experience loss of hair while undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or other conditions. Look Good Feel Better is a non-medical, brand-neutral public service program that teaches beauty techniques to cancer patients to help them manage the appearance-related side effects they inherit from cancer treatment. The program is for women who are either going through chemotherapy or radiation, recovering from cancer, or in
cancer remission. Smith’s certified non-surgical hair loss center works with men, women and children with physical appearance concerns as a result of chemotherapy, alopecia, lupus, thyroid disease and medical hair loss traction. She helps her patients regain inner peace by making them look and feel better about themselves. “It’s a really vulnerable time for them,” states Smith. “I teach them how to apply make-up and wear hairstyles to enhance what they have. You don’t feel pretty when you’re losing your eyebrows, your skin is different, and you have no eyelashes. So that’s where I come in, teaching them the different physical techniques and tricks to make them look better and feel better about their appearance.” Local churches donate hair-wraps and other items to help. Through Smith’s establishment, patients can order custom-made wigs to enhance their outer beauty which provides more self-confidence as they go through the trials, tribulations, and emotional distraught of having cancer.” Trying to break through the threshold to get into the network of doctors, and getting onboard with the doctors’ offices, was a huge challenge for Smith. However, the patients are always open to learning and welcoming what she has to offer. Smith volunteers to help children and worked with the Ronald McDonald House and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, referring parents to organizations that offer free wigs for kids, children’s programs, and other things that children need. “I live for my kids, Zhane 14 and Zarea 7,” states Smith. “They inspire me and they give me the will to want to continue…to keep going…to strive to be better…to accomplish my

goals. I love seeing the faces on the kids, and on the adults. It’s all about giving back to make someone else’s life feel more enhanced.” The American Cancer Society determines who goes through the Look Good Feel Better program, and must pre-approve each patient wishing to attend the classes. Zha’zar does not supply medications or cosmetics. However, each participant in the program receives a special cosmetic gift bag with products donated by sponsors like Elizabeth Arden, Mary Kay, Aveeno, Lancome’, IT Cosmetics, Biore, and others. The cosmetics donated are specifically American Cancer Society approved items that can be used by cancer patients. The Look Good Feel Better group programs are open to all women with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, or other forms of treatment. In the United States alone, more than 900,000 women have participated in the program, which now offers 15,400 group workshops nationwide in more than 2,500 locations. Smith’s next project is to open the “Atlanta Hair Loss Solutions” facility in Georgia, and eventually open multiple locations across the nation. “When you help others,” says Smith, “you help to empower them. Whatever you are facing or going through, face it head on. You can get through it. Don’t allow anyone else to tear you down. Embrace life, and continue to pray on everything. Smile, thank God and continue to move forward.” If you need Smith to recondition your self-confidence, please contact her at www.Zhazar.com.
