Special honorees, Anthony Cymery "Joe the Barber" of Haircuts For Hugs and Carmen Nieves, were honored by Sadie Lovelson, Vice President of ETBINC., and founder, Tanisha Akinloye, for touching the lives of those in need. Actor/singer, Anthony "Tony" Grant, of Tyler Perry's"Why Did I Get Married" and "Marriage Counselor" and Own Network's "Love thy Neighbor," captivated the audience with two stellar performances-"You're for Me," and "Beautiful Woman." R&B singer, Lamone, amped the ladies in the crowd even more when he hit the stage with a fun and sultry performance of his breakout new single, "High Off You." The final featured woman of empowerment, success coach, Marge Piccini, admonished everyone to 'create your own success.' Tips To Achieve & Retain Length
1
3
Eat Healthy & Drink Lots of Water:
Remember the Scalp:
Adding scalp massages and hot oil treatments to your hair regimen is very helpful in your quest for achieving and retaining length. A healthy scalp is key. For scalp massages, start at the temples, and move your fingertips in small circular motions with a constant pressure, not too hard though. Work your way around your head in small sections at a time. Try to avoid scalp massages right before a chemical process as this may make your scalp more sensitive.
It has been proven that your health has a great deal to do with healthy hair. To achieve stronger more shiny hair, make sure you have a balanced diet and drink lots of water.
2
Trim Ends Regularly:
Trimming your ends will not make your hair grow, but it will help you to retain length. Your ends should be trimmed about every 6-8 weeks for relaxed hair, or 3-4 months for natural hair. This will rid you of damaged and split ends and reduce the amount of hair breakage that you experience.
26 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2014
4
Lay off The Heat:
It is not a good idea to use heat on your hair all the time. From blow drying to flat irons, heat is used often in our styling regimens, but too much heat can damage the hair. Maybe add curlers instead of a curling iron once in a while, or let your hair air dry instead of using a hair blow dryer. Mix it up and you will notice your hair will look even healthier as you use less heat.
5
Let Hair Rest: Protective styles are a
great way to let your hair rest from your daily hairstyles. Some protective styles include braiding and twisting the hair, with added hair or your own, as well as sew-in extensions, and also wigs. Using these protective styles will let your hair rest and help to keep it strong.
6
Condition Hair:
Finding the right conditioner for your hair is a key component to achieving and retaining length. Hair conditioner moisturizes hair and makes it softer and shiner. Conditioners also protect hair from heat applied by blow dryers and curling irons.
7
Invest in Vitamins/Supplements:
Along with eating healthy and drinking lots of water, we also suggest vitamins and supplements. There are some that are designed specifically for hair growth, but using a combination of everyday vitamins can help you achieve healthier hair as well, resulting in hair growth. Some vitamins that have been said to help with your hair are Iron, Zinc, Bcomplex Vitamins, and Vitamin D. Be sure to always consult your physician before taking anything though.

What to Look for in a Wig for Alopecia By Steven McCracken
I
f you have alopecia, you will be all too aware of how distressing hair loss can be, how it can affect your confidence and self-esteem and how, on top of all that, you may have to deal with others' opinions or prejudices. Alopecia has many forms ranging from small patchy hair loss on the head (alopecia areata) to full body hair loss (alopecia universalis). Human hair wigs can last longer than ready-towear wigs If you plan to wear a wig every day, it might be worth investing in a human hair wig. This is because it is the closest to your own hair and responds to moisture, the weather elements etc in a way that you will already be familiar with. Unlike ready-to-

wear synthetic wigs which are normally supplied in a 'set' style, a human hair wig allows you to create your own styles, use heated appliances and so on - an important routine in many women's lives. With correct care, human hair wigs can last longer than ready-to-wear pieces, even up to 2 years. A silicone base or silicone features can offer extra security Thanks to a revolutionary new manufacturing process, those with alopecia now have access to human hair wigs with a full silicone base. Known as 'vacuum' wigs, this product creates suction between the scalp and base which means it's almost impossible to accidentally dislodge the wig. Provided there is no hair on the scalp, a wig made from pure silicone will provide extra staying power. Many human hair wigs are also now designed with internal silicone strips which offer added staying power. A high number of individuals with alopecia feel that bases combined with silicone bring bring peace of mind together with security and with comfort! Look for wigs with 'close wefts' or 'drawn thru' hair
gaps, unsightly giveaway seams or missing sections. Close weft human hair wigs can be blow-dried or exposed to windy weather conditions without the wearer feeling self-conscious. All that will appear is a natural-looking scalp. Drawn through hair is when the hair is threaded through two base layers rather than one - in order to totally conceal any knotting or hair attachment. This ultimately means that the hair looks like it's growing straight out of the scalp/skin. Close wefts and drawn through hair techniques offer an enhanced, realistic look. If you're experiencing hair loss or have alopecia and need assistance with a hair replacement product or a human hair wig, please contact experts like [http://www.naturalwigs. co.uk]NaturalWigs.co.uk. With access to many [http://www. naturalwigs.co.uk/human-hair-wigs.html]specialist human hair wigs for those with alopecia, you can guarantee a great natural-looking choice and peace of mind. A good quality wig, especially a human hair wig, will offer 'close wefts' and be made with another feature called 'doubledrawn hair'. Close wefts means that the hair is attached to the base in very close sections so that, overall, hair is evenly and closely distributed and looks just like a dense head of natural hair. HAIR With the boom of African American women embracing their “Naturalista”, some would say that there has been a lot more women opting for the DIY (Do It Yourself) looks. With the thousands of hair videos on YouTube and other video sharing sites, you can find a new style with a quick search in less than a minute, and possibly conquer the style after watching it over and over again. With this new revenue of information being given to consumers, bloggers have unintentionally relayed the message that there is no longer a need to go to the beauty salon. Operating to merge the separation between beauty bloggers and licensed stylists, Entwine Couture was created. Understanding that women, processed or natural, benefit from the knowledge of both is a message that they are delivering.
Entwine Naturalle Coiffure Collezioni is a premier salon-inspired natural hair care and style line, and they are encouraging women to return to the salon. Providing innovative products as well as ongoing education, they are unique in their own. Entwine Couture is stepping up, insuring that beauty bloggers have the opportunity to learn from professional stylists and their peers. With the consumer’s best interest in mind, Entwine Couture is taking the lead role as a facilitator of cross training hosting style seminars, tailored workshops, and master classes, bringing the professional stylist back into the conversation to insure that bloggers and professional stylists have the proper hair care information, assuring the most rewarding hair care journey for women. sweep it diagonally upwards to the middle of the ear. Make a "fish face" while doing this to figure out the perfect placement. Do not apply too much of it.
Highlight your eyesThe more dramatic your eyes look, the slimmer your face will appear. Use eyeliner and mascara to make your eyes appear larger and a dark shadow to add volume. Gold and pink shadows work best for blue eyes, copper and plum for green eyes and blue, teal and purple look great with brown eyes.
Bronzer is the keyIn makeup, dark shades recede while lighter shades highlight the features. Use a bronzer correctly to lift the weight off your face. Apply the bronzer on the jaw line to highlight your cheek bones. Blend the bronzer properly with your makeup so that you do not appear too dark. To hide your double chin, apply bronzer on your jawline to define the area. Blend it perfectly.
HighlighterAdd a little touch up to your cheek bones with a light highlighter. Also apply some on the center of your nose and forehead to elongate your face and make your entire face look lighter.
Pink LipsHide your eye circles-
The right shape of your eyebrowEyebrows play a big role in how slim or heavy your face appears. Your eyebrows need to be thick with an arch in the middle. A higher arched eyebrow lifts the face and makes a round face appear slimmer. You can also use an eyebrow pencil with a shade darker than your natural brow to make them stand out.
Dark circles add weight to your face. Cover your under eye circles with a concealer and blend it to match the rest of your face. You can also use a white eye shadow or a highlighter to the corners of your eyes to make them stand out. By making your eyes stand out your face will look slimmer.
Blush-
Dark shades of lipsticks make you look heavier. A light pink shade makes the face look light and gives fullness to your lips. Nude colors make your lips appear thinner. Try these steps the next time you apply makeup and watch the magic happen. Article Source: Makeup Tips to Make Your Face Look Thinner
Blushes with brown undertones make your face look slimmer. Pink or peach blushes make your cheeks appear fuller and your face appears heavier than it actually is. Apply your blush under the cheekbone and 41 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

Dawson My hair is my self-expression...when my hair is done it makes me feel as if I can take on the world...My braids are now my signature look. I want to be known for braids because it is unique. Not many models are known for having braids. Throwing a quick turban in my head can take my outfit from drab to fab in an instant...I enjoy having that ability.

Is Stress Hindering your weight loss efforts? By Jacquelyn Hollister
S
tress happens when people feel like they don’t have the tools to manage all of the demands in their lives. Oftentimes the emotional stress in our lives can paralyze us from starting our weight loss journey, and can even hinder weight loss progress. In most cases, stress stems from issues with money (lack of, debt, etc), poor relationships (with our Higher Power, our selves, and/or others), and our physical environment (disorganization, clutter, negative people, etc). When it comes to reducing stress in these areas, employing basic problem solving skills is the key. First, determine which of the areas above need the most attention in your life right now. Next, identify the problem in that area by asking yourself, “Why am I having such difficulty maintaining this area of my life?” The answer may not come immediately, so take your time and seriously think about it. Once you realize why, be sure to
48 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - February 2014
write it down. Now that you have identified the problem, it’s time to create a plan of ACTION for tackling the problem. Complete the following steps. (Do you have something to write with ready?): Step 1. Brainstorm on possible solutions. Let the ideas flow without judgment, be open-minded. Step 2. Consider the pros and cons for each solution you come up with, and then choose the best solution. Step 3. Create a plan of action for achieving the solution you selected, and ask for help if necessary. Step 4. Follow through! Step 5. Repeat with a different solution if necessary (Be persistent!) Achieving and maintaining balance in the areas of money, relationships, and physical environment will free up energy and allow you to go full force
in pursuing your weight loss goal, as well as help maintain your goal once you have reached it.
