PRODUCT REVIEW:

Deja’s Hair Milk The Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk serves wonders as a daily hair moisturizer. It wins the fight with dry hair every time! And not only does it keep your hair moisturized after the initial application, but it keeps the hair moisturized all day. I used it on wet hair, and also on dry hair, and it seemed to also help with tangles as well. This is definitely a product that should be kept on hand in your product supply! Bee Sensitive Oil Free Hair Serum I used the Bee Sensitive Oil Free Hair Serum on my daughter’s thick natural hair, and not only did I love, she loved it too! She said her scalp felt cool, and did not itch. It instantly softened her dry hair after spraying it on. I also applied this in conjunction with the Deja’s Hair Milk, and the combination of the two produced amazing results. Hair Styling Butter Bee Mine’s Hair Styling Curly Butter is wonderful!!! The thing I first loved about this was the smell when I opened the jar, which was captivating! I applied this to natural hair, and it was perfect for curls or twists. It defined curls, and at the same time, left the hair light and not weighed down. It did not leave a residue, and a little went a long ways. Provides nice shine and ___ great 10 moisture. What not to love?! ___

One-on-One interview with Cleveland Ohio Native and Singing Soultress...

Conya Doss ___ 18 ___

___ 19 ___

W

ith her big hair, style of dress, and ability to say "no" to mainstreaming pressures, Conya Doss remains a role model to thousands. One of the US’ favorite Multi-Award Winning Indie Artists, and Cleaveland, Ohio native, she sat down and talked to us recently about her road to success, and the releasing of her 6th album, "Pocket Full of Purpose".

C O N Y A

___ 20 ___

D O S S

I want to start off by giving our readers a little background information about you… You are a Cleveland native, born and raised. You started singing at age 5? Approximately age 5, I might have been younger, but around there. That is when I really knew that I could sing at that age. It has been noted that among your musical influences are Donnie Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Natilie Cole, Prince, Sade, and Chaka Kaun just to name a few… Yeah, did you mention Andra Woodworth? They are all so amazing; I mean they made timeless music, so you are definitely right on with that. Another one I forgot to mention was Nina Simone Now is there one that stands out beyond the rest as your musical idol? All of them, to be honest with you. They all have different elements, and those are the first people that come to mind. There isn’t just one that influences me. In your biography it states that you attended the Cleveland School of Arts and you became a teacher of children with special needs... That is correct Can you tell us more about that? Do you still work with the school district? Yes, I still teach, and the special education has evolved as well, and in some aspects that is a good thing, and sometimes it may not be the best for the kids. What we do is include them, what I do is teach the same curriculum, but sometimes I have to modify it by re-wording it, teach it from a different angle, or breaking it down a little further. Now do you teach music or subjects as well? Subjects. A lot of times, I do try to tie music in, especially to Literature. It helps to keep their attention. At that age, their focus is off, so you just have to make a connection with what they are interested in and tie it into things that they have to be informed about.

Your debut album, "A Poem about Ms. Doss", is said to have been completed after an inspiring letter from one of your students. What was the letter about? A student asked me to do something, and I told her she couldn’t do it until she finished her work, so she sat there and pouted. Well later my principal found a letter, and said “Ms. Doss, I thought you might want to see this letter”, and it was titled “A Poem about Ms. Doss”. So later I was like, I’m going to name my album that. But then it came full circle, because a lot of the songs were representation of me, so it had a dual meaning. And I think music is poetry. So at this point in your life, when you’ve determined that vocals would be your future career, what goals did you set for yourself as far as musically? Musically I would say just staying true to my creativity because this is something that I have been doing for a while, and I’ve known people throughout high school, where they had deals while they were in high school and they fell through. I had some bumps in the road, but I had to focus, stay true to myself, and definitely felt like I had to go to school and get a degree so I could have something to fall back on. Because a lot of times people think they really own you if you depend on them for everything, and you don’t have anything to fall back on. No type of trade or education; I’ve known people where they’ve relied on a company to pay for their mortgage or light bill, and I didn’t want that. I don’t know if you are familiar with the author Kevin Powell? Well this is what lite a light bulb, he took me to some like whole in the wall place where there was entertainment, and the artist there were so talented! And he was like; do you know why I bought you here? And I’m like why? And he said I don’t want to see you doing this, the world needs to know your music, the world needs to know what you have to give. So after that, that was the driving force, and that is what motivates me and kind of inspired me on the music side of it.

Did you ever think that you would have your 6th album coming out this year? No, because after “ Just Because”, I said this is my last album, and it was so ironic that everytime I was motivated to create something, I have enough product to create another album too. I think it’s a gift and I have to follow my heart. And when the signs say ok, you need to get back into the studio and create, that’s what I do. It’s not like, oh I need to create another album, it just happens. … And it seems to happen that every 2 years I have release an album. That’s an awesome achievement for anybody, wow 6 albums. And I definitely give the creator the credit, because if it weren’t for God, I mean its nobody else but God to pput people in my life that help me and guide me in the right direction, positive people, who believe in what I am doing and a great support system. The premiere for your new video “Here For You” is scheduled to release in July, what can fans expect to see in that video? It’s a great video. My days f trying to act are over, so I love to do performance shots and people be the actors and actresses and have them do what I want them to do. So it will be another fun experience. Where can the video be located? Vh1, Music Choice, Conyadoss.com, YouTube, and I’m also on Facebook and twitter under ConyaD Continued on pg. 23

___ 22 ___

So anybody that knows you and has seen your vidoes and pictures knows of you as wearing big curly hair. Who or what is inspiration for your style? I’ve always been outside of the box since like middle school, but my mom, I look at her pictures when she was younger and I’m like wow, she was so beautiful. She was always into the big hair, and the big ‘fros and cornrows, and I just thought that was so awesome. I’ve always said she’s like my fashion icon when it comes to things like that. Is there anything about your hairstyle that symbolizes who you are? I’m willing to take chances. At one point people didn’t like to wear texture looking hair, or the natural style, and I’ve always been into that. It’s just a representation of how strong of a people we are.

At the Michael Baisden Celebration, what songs will you be performing? I’ll probably perform 2-3 songs including “What I do” off my last album, along with “Don’t Change”. Do you have any other upcoming projects that you would like us to know about? Continue with my dance group at school, trying to expand it,and that is for at risk female teenagers, in addition to that, I want to be apart of the whole water crisis situation in Haiti, and all over the world. We’ve already created a song, Myra Davis and I, and hopefully we can launch it off with their campaign. I just want to make sure that I am doing my part to make the world aware of the things that we take for granted that’s going on, and we need to pay attention because it not too far removed from where we are at.

As far as hair products, what Is your favorite hair product that you couldn’t live without? Shea butter I love, Carol’s Daughters, I’ve been getting hip to Miss Jessies, and that’s been something that works for me, and olive oil. Even using olive oil for hot oil treatments is necessary to put that moisture back in the hair.

If you haven’t purchased Conya Doss’ most Also, I received a concoction from a friend, and I recent album, “Pocket Full of Purpose”, you never knew how good avocado is for your hair! So can buy it on her website, ConyaDoss.com, every month I’ll mix avocado and an egg, and olive oil Amazon.com, and you can call your local together, and I’ll do a hot oil treatement and that’s like stores as well. the best feeling, oh my goodness! We have recently heard that you will be performing at the Michael Baisden 9th Annual Anniversary Celebration, which will be held Saturday, July 14th, at the Apollo Theater. Yes, I’m very excited about that. Then after that I will be doing the Family Day Unity Festival July 28th And I’m going to be on a show with Rolls Royce and Cameo, and I’m a huge fan of Rolls Royce… Then after that I will be going over to London to the Jazz Cafe
