Every time I try to do a DIY hair color on my hair at home, I end up dying portions of my forehead and neck.

How can I protect my skin from being dyed around my hairline?

There are also products sold in beauty supply stores and online that are made especially for this like a stain remover or color barrier product.

I’ve been trying to decide which color to dye my hair, and I am afraid to make the wrong choice. Do you have any advice how to make this “life altering” decision?lol

MWBH: When did you know that you wanted to be a professional hairstylist?

BB: This is kind of funny, I never actually wanted to be a hairstylist. I kept changing my mind about what I wanted to attend college for so my mother suggested cosmetology school.

It wasn’t until I was fully immersed in the program that I realized this was really what I wanted to do with my career.

MWBH: Whatdo you love most about your job?

BB: I love that there is no limit to the creativity of hairstyling. I can create beautiful everyday looks for women that build their confidence and improve the way they look & feel. And then I create my hair sculptures which are the extreme opposite. I feel like there’s no limit to what a stylist can do.

MWBH: Do you have a signature style? And if so, what is it?

BB: I don’t know if I have a ‘signature style’, that’s hard to say because I have so many favorites. I’m in love with a clean Vidal Sassoon bob, one if my favorite cuts to execute. I also love a sassy pixie haircut. I’m a free-form hairstylist, but I love precision too.

My style is very evident in my fashion choices too.

would be recently when I created a dramatic hairstyle change for the R&B Songstress GoGo Morrow. Her traditional look is a short black styled coif, which we switched to platinum blonde for her show at the TLA in Philadelphia. We had to hide her hair during all her interviews for a week and then we revealed the style when she stepped on the stage. Her fans went crazy! It was an amazing feeling.

MWBH: You were selected to be on the 2011 cast of Oxygen’s Hair Battle Spectacular. Can you tell our readers what is was like to compete on the reality show?

BB: Being on Oxygen’s Hair Battle Spectacular was a rewarding experience. Reality television is not the easiest job to do. I say ‘job’ because it looks like fun and games, but it was work. I loved the opportunity because it really pushed me as a stylist and I was able to embrace the next level of my talent. I came home a different person and a seasoned stylist.

MWBH: What do you like most about styling fantasy or couture hair styles?

BB: When I’m creating couture hairstyles I feel completely free. There’s no limit to the creativity and the art that can come from that work. I feel like all artists want to be free.

MWBH: Can you tell us more about your non-profit, the La Femme Hair Exhibition Organization?

BB: La Femme Hair Exhibition Organization was created to host events in which artists can come together and express their amazing talents, but give back to their community. I have a special place in my heart for the autism charities and that was what started my vision.

Hollywood Actress Robinne Lee has graced us with her prescence over the years with numerous apperances in such films as Deliver Us From Eva and Miss Dial, as well as BET’s Being Mary Jane and a soon to be released movie, Curdled. But did you also know that this successful actress is also a mom of 2, holds a Law Degree from Columbia University, and speaks fluent french?!

Talk about a modern day Superwomen! MWBH had a chance to go one-on-one with Ms. Robinne Lee to talk about her career, beauty, and more...

MWBH: You have recently completed a movie titled, Miss Dial. Tell us more about that movie and what you liked about it the most.

RL: Miss Dial is a quirky, romantic comedy that I star in and also produced. It’s an independent feature that was shot on a shoestring budget and the other producers and I called on all our friends for favors to help bring our writer-director, David H. Steinberg’s script to the big screen. The result is a fun, offbeat, comedy with a beautiful message about making real connections with people in this modern tech world where everyone interacts via phone, text, email and social media and few people really connect at a deeper level. I loved working with my costars, especially Sam Jaeger (Parenthood), who plays my love interest and I think our chemistry comes across resoundingly on screen.

People have likened our film to those Doris Day type romantic comedies of the 60s, and I could not be more flattered by that comparison.

MWBH: We heard that you will be featured in BET’s upcoming project, Being Mary Jane. Can you describe the character that you will be playing?

RL: I’m playing the role of Avery Daniels, a woman, who on the surface appears to have it all.

A partnership at an illustrious law firm, a handsome, successful husband, two beautiful children, a stunning house, a Range Rover… And then very quickly we learn that everything is not as perfect as it seems, as her husband is having an affair with the titular character (played by Gabrielle Union) and when Mary Jane approaches Avery and informs her that she’s sleeping with André, Avery’s world rapidly falls apart. For an actor, it’s the kind of dream role you hope for as there’s so much to sink your teeth into and such a roller coaster ride of emotions you get to explore (loathing, depression, anger, vulnerability, loss, love - all of it). I feel so extremely lucky to have been given this gift by Mara (Brock Akil). I can’t say enough great things about this character and Being Mary Jane in general. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see it!

MWBH: Do you have any other projects coming up that we should keep an eye out for?

RL: I’ve got a couple of things in the works. I recently finished writing my first novel and I’m out www.MidwestBlackHair.com

to publishers now. I am super excited about finally getting my book out there -- it’s been a labor of love for the past six years - so once a deal is done and a release date is set, you can bet I’ll be publicizing it everywhere! I’ve also lined up the next project that I am producing, but it’s still very early in the preparation process, so I don’t want to say too much about it yet.

MWBH: When filming long days and being very busy, how do you maintain your hair?

MWBH: You are known for having very beautiful soft skin, can you tell us what your secret is? What is your daily skin regimen?

RL: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I’ve always been big into moisturization and that was only magnified when I moved to LA and realized quickly how very drying the air is here. I use light cleansers on my face (Cetaphil or Shiseido), nothing too drying, and then I usually layer my moisturizers. I use Oil of Olay Complete with SPF 30 as a base, and Kiehl’s Creme d’Elegance Repairateur on top during the day.

At night, I use more Kiehl’s. The other big secrets are to get a lot of sleep, which I definitely don’t do, and drink tons of water which I’m trying to do more of. So I’m still a work in progress, I guess.

RL: When I’m filming, I try to do as little to it as possible, which means I’ll just slather on loads of deep conditioner and wear it in a bun. I tend to blow my hair out a lot for appointments, auditions, events, etc. - so when I can give it a rest, and not apply any heat to it, I do.

MWBH: We noticed that you like to wear your hair natural, what is your favorite product that you use to keep your curls looking great?

RL: I mix it up a lot.

I always start with Kiehl’s Creme with Silk Groom which has been my salvation for years! Depending on the humidity, I might add KMS California’s Curlup curling balm, and then I usually top it off with some sort of laminate or moisturizing product or both. KMS California has lots of good styling products. They used to make this one thing called Configure Cream, which worked

By: Tracy Hill Does your hair color fade within days after you have hair color?

You're not alone...most hair color fades about 20% with the first shampoo. Look at the following "reminders" to help keep your color looking radiant and healthy, everyday of the month.

Shampoo First: One of the easiest ways to help keep the color lasting is to shampoo and dry your hair before you color at home or have the salon service. I know some of you are thinking... " but I just can't rinse the color it will dry my hair out." Keep in mind that the only reason you shampoo is to cleanse and remove product from the hair. The hair color product that is being used on the hair will not make your hair dirty, so it really doesn't matter when you shampoo to cleanse. It can be thoroughly rinsed and conditioned and the color will retain the shade value and last longer which is your ultimate goal.

Turn Down the Heat: When you're shampooing use tepid water rather than hot water.

In most cases, it is not necessary to shampoo twice unless you are cleansing your hair to use a product that requires a first shampoo.

Use a professional shampoo and treatment line to help retain the moisture which will help the fresh hair color last longer. These products can be purchased in the salon or in the beauty supply.

Hair Spray: If you need to use hair spray, always spray at a distance (about 10 inches). Hair spray coats the hair shaft and suffocates the hair leaving it dull and dry. Often women spray so close that the hair looks like pastry crust when it dries. This chemical dries out the hair so much that it lifts out the hair color molecules from the hair shaft. Or, coats

the hair so much, the molecules can't penetrate into the hair shaft, which will cause an uneven deposit of color in the hair shaft. When using this with other high-volume alcohol hair styling products, use sparingly. Also, be sure to rinse every day with warn water if you don't shampoo. This will help to remove the daily build up.

These will deposit color pigments into the hair shaft without coating so they can be used weekly if you want.

You can also use color shampoos which will sometimes coat the hair, so I suggest not using them near your next color service. Both these products will help to extend your hair color. You can match or brighten your blonde, red and brunette hair. These can be used over natural or color treated hair every week or once a month. All salons have them for the normal color service, which will cost about as much as the permanent color service. Or, you can buy them to take home from the salon or at a beauty supply.

Dead Ends: It is also important to keep your "dead end" cut or at least trimmed, to help the ends not to look so faded.

The whole strand is really dead once it grows from the scalp so by the time it grows 4-8 inches, they are generally drier than the mid-hair shaft and need to be trimmed off. You will often see women with flat color on the ends of the hair because often times the hair has not been prepared properly to accept the color formula

being used. Therefore it is the first to slip down the drain with the shampoo. This can also be corrected with the above Semi-Permanent colorant.

Last word: Good hair color takes work. If you want beautiful hair color you must make a commitment. Keep your hair appointments and have treatments in the salon or do them yourself at home. Dr. Amerson wrote the song to assist with alopecia awareness on a global scale. September is National Alopecia Areata Awareness Month. This was my first song I had written and produced. I put fear aside because I had to share what God had given me in this song. It was not about me!

I will work on a video, in the future, to give the visual component to consumers for a clear understanding of my alopecia awareness message. We also include an essay contest for children ages 10-18 who are affected.

Our topic is, “I Have Alopecia, But It Does Not Define Who I Am”, requiring a minimum of 300 words and a picture of the contestant. Deadline for submissions is December 31, 2013. All proceeds from the CD will go towards our essay scholarship fund." Please make plans to join us!!!

Entrepreneur, Mother, and Beauty Diva, Taneka Jones is all of the above! This creative business owner has taken her love of cosmetics and turned it into a business that is taking the world by storm.

Taneka Jones was born and raised in Queens, NY, and is married to Jayvon Jones with whom they have 4 beautiful children Ariana (11), Jamirah (3), Jayla (2), Brandon (1 ½ years), and are also expecting a 5th child.

Taneka is a teacher by profession; however, there was something in her that was not fulfilled in that career. She was led step-by step to an entrepreneurial career of passion and purpose.

As the Jones family grew, Taneka became a stay-at-home mom. She would give her daughter’s mani-pedis and make them up. She then realized that this could turn into a business that would not require her to be away from her children. Super Diva Kid’s Spa was birthed out

of this observation in March 2011. It is a mobile spa for girls ages 4-14. Taneka has successfully operated children’s spa parties in New York and beyond. During the parties, participants are given manicures, pedicures, play dress-up and receive mini-glam makeovers.

Taneka realized that she always loved make-up. Parents of the spa parties’ participants were always pleased; so much so that Taneka was asked to do adult make-up during the parties at times.

Why was she using other cosmetic products when she could create her own?

That is just what Taneka did. Following the birth of her only son, Taneka began the year-long process of creating a line. She met with a colorist and chemist, laying her vision for a long-lasting,
