Michelle Obama: t! s e w id M e th s it is V y d a L First
O
n May 16, 2014, Michelle Obama, the First Lady of the United States, visited the Midwest to give a speech on education and segregation, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Brown v. Board of Education. Thousands had the opportunity to be a part of this amazing event, as she graced the stage in Topeka, KS and spoke and spoke to hundreds of graduating high school seniors as well as members of the community. Topeka is home to the historic case of Brown vs. Board of Education, in which the Supreme Court's decision outlawed racial segregation in our nation's schools -- declaring education "must be made available to all on equal terms." Michelle Obama went on to talk about the continued problem of the racial divide in many cities through the United States. She went on to talk about how many students of color fall behind their white peers and attend separate schools with less-experienced teachers and run-down classrooms. “Our laws may no longer separate us based on our skin color, but there’s nothing in our Constitution that says we have to eat together in the lunchroom or live together in the same neighborhoods,” she said. “So the answers to many of our challenges today can’t necessarily be found in our laws; these changes also need to take place in our hearts and in our minds.” So we also challenge you all today to reflect on yourself, and see what you can do to make yourself a better person, and also give back. Lend a hand to a nearby school or afterschool program, because we as a community are responsible for raising the next generation to be great! 18 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2014

Help Your Daughter VE O L Her Hair! By Eddie Simpson
W
hen my daughter was born, she didn't have a bunch of hair. By the time she was 2, it seems as if she had even less. She suffered from eczema causing all of her hair to fall out, except a little poof at the top of her head. She also had extremely dry, fragile, thin sandy brown hair! I just knew that this poor child would always be bald and forever suffer the stigma of being the girl with itsy bitsy pigtails. As my daughter turned from a baby to a toddler, I did everything to try to grow her hair back. She was getting taller and bigger; she was at the age where she should be wearing beads or pretty burettes instead of a tiny, dry, auburn afro...lol. I purchased 22 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2014
a "wonderful" moisturizer and applied it daily, sometimes twice a day. I would even deep conditioner her and have her run around with a processing cap on for hours. Whenever I would see a little girl with long pretty ponytails or beads, I would stop her mother and ask her what she was using on her daughter's hair and then I would run out to pick it up. It NEVER failed, when I got to the beauty supply store, I would see that the product was packed with nasty ingredients and I would leave it on the shelf, frustrated and back at square one. By the time my daughter turned 4, I had gotten so frustrated with both of our hair issues that I started to make my own concoctions. Over the next year,
her hair had thrived like crazy. The nutrient rich diet that I was feeding her follicles had her hair growing like wild fire! Now, we had a NEW problem; her hair had gotten so thick that doing it became overwhelming at times. It seems as if she just woke up one morning with a ton of hair that had massive shrinkage and just took forever to do! We went from 4 beads per braid, to 10, to 20 (I wouldn't put any more than that, but there was room for several more). For the next year and a half, she exclusively wore braids so that I didn't have to handle her hair too often. Each time I took her braids out, it seemed as if her hair had grown a bit more. When Khyli turned 7, she no longer wanted to always have her hair braided; she wanted to try new styles, which required more upkeep. It seemed as if every time I did her hair, we would fight and I would threaten to cut it all off or make her get Sisterlocks. Doing her hair became a battle; a dreaded event. I had to figure out a way to make this more pleasurable; I didn't want her to start hating her hair, start thinking that it was "bad" because I complained about doing it so much. Here I will share some of the tips and techniques I discovered that helped me with managing my daughter's MID BACK LENGTH hair. The first thing I did was make a conscious effort to be patient with myself. I would schedule her hair just like I would schedule a meeting. Do it on a day where I knew I had enough time to take it down, wash it, condition it, and then put it back up, which could easily take 6 hours. As her hair grew and became denser, I started to wash her hair in sections. I would put 5-7 puffs in her hair and wash each one separately; this would cut down on tangles. I did the same with conditioning her hair. Comb the hair in sections as well; starting from the ends to the root. Take small sections for very dense course hair. Use a detangling spray such as Although Khyli is very tall, I still washed her hair in the kitchen sink, while she would lie across the kitchen counter. This
made it so much easier to wash her hair; as she was more comfortable. I also decided that I would make the day a bonding experience. We would spend the time to catch up! This was a time for just the two of us with very minimal interruptions. We talked about everything; how school was going, how my job was going, tell her stories about when I was a little girl or when she was a little girl; and I would make it a point to tell her several times throughout the day, how much I loved her hair! You may also pick up her favorite movie or book; if your daughter is anything like mine, she will want to talk about the movie, amongst a million other things. I allow her to read the book to me if she is in a talkative mood; and we stop and discuss it as she reads. Also, give yourself enough time to schedule breaks. I allow her to stop and have lunch or make a snack as well as just play with her dolls or move around for 30 minutes or so. Tying her hair down at night with a satin scarf will preserve the style, allowing her to go a little further in between styling. Use great products! I am telling you now, the difference between a sulfate free moisturizing shampoo and a shampoo filled with sulfates can make or break your daughter's hair (style). Using a good hydrating deep conditioner will help to detangle and soften the hair, aiding in making it more manageable. Moisturizers that are water based and made with natural ingredients will further soften the hair while giving it flexibility. I am NOT against blow drying or flatironing the hair (I just don't do it), this will make styling the hair (in most styles) a little easier. Once the hair is moisturized, blow dry it out enough so that it's easier to part or handle. If you are using a heating appliance, make sure that you use a heat protector. So many mothers opt to put a relaxer in their daughter's hair because of the hassle with dealing with their natural hair; using
these tips may cut down on the frustration and save your daughter's hair from severe damage, breakage, and thinning! Eddie Simpson is a hair care specialist specializing in helping African American women grow their hair longer, stronger and healthier through educating them and providing healthy hair care products that will stimulate the scalp, nourish the follicles and strengthen the hair. When Eddie Simpson was twenty years old, she suffered severe hair loss and damage due to an allergic reaction to bonding glue; her hair went bald in the crown and thinned severely throughout. After purchasing every product that claimed it would grow her hair back, going through steroid injections in her scalp, and undergoing infrared light therapy, without much success, she decided to wage war against her hair loss. Eddie tirelessly researched ways to grow her hair back longer stronger and healthier. In the battle, she discovered priceless information such as harmful and healthy ingredients for hair growth; techniques to minimize breakage; how to detect hair issues such as follicle disorders, illnesses and other problems that may impede hair growth; tips to manage and care for the hair; and many other essential tools in order to grow healthier hair. In 2007, Eddie compiled all of her research and authored a guide to empower women in the battle to grow healthy hair, transition from chemicals, and to enjoy their natural hair; Relaxed or Natural, You Can Have Beautiful, Healthy, Black Hair.

not pain. Tight braids can lead to traction alopecia or thinning edges. If your braider is braiding too tightly, do not be afraid to let them know and if they can't accommodate your instructions; you should not allow them do your hair.
Many people have extensions put in and after six to eight weeks take them down and notice a ton of new growth, but also notice a ton of shedding. This article will provide you with extension secrets that will allow you to see MORE growth and LESS shedding!
Braid extensions, synthetic ones, come coated in a chemical. This chemical strips the hair of its natural moisture, which can lead to an itchy scalp, dryness and eventually to brittle hair and breakage if it is not combated with a good moisturizing routine. In order to strip the extension of this coating, you should take the entire braid out of the package and submerge it in a bowl of apple cider vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes and then rinse it under cool water. The smell will be gone before the extensions are applied.
First I will start with the basics. Whether the hair is in a weave, extensions, natural or relaxed, the three most important component to growing healthy hair is keeping it clean (water), deep conditioning (protein), and moisture (flexibility). If you neglect any of these three components you are not giving your hair an optimal environment for healthy hair growth. One of the most important tips for braid extensions is to make sure your braids are not put in too tightly. Getting your hair braided should not cause pain; minor discomfort maybe, but
Braid extensions are generally expensive to have done, therefore many women do not wash them in order to preserve them, but this is not preserving the health of their own hair. There are several ways to effectively wash extensions without causing too much damage to them. One option is to: Pour a couple of teaspoons of shampoo and apple cider vinegar (ACV) in a cup, Fill the cup with water. While in the shower, run your head under the water (luke
raid extensions seem like the best way to grow out a bad haircut, transition from relaxed hair to natural hair or to just let your hair rest from the daily styling, and manipulating. In the past I have used them for all of the above, but it wasn't until a couple of years go I learned to reap the full benefit of braid extensions. Braid extensions allow direct access to the scalp, which makes it easier to cleanse the scalp and strengthen the hair without having to handle the hair.
42 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2014
warm or cool; not hot) Pour the shampoo/ACV concoction directly onto the scalp, Lightly massage the scalp only. Continue this until you have covered the entire head Rinse thoroughly Another option: Fill a 4 oz bottle halfway with water Squirt a teaspoon or two of shampoo into the bottle Fill the rest with apple cider vinegar (Shake up the mixture) Run your hair through the water (remember luke warm or cool; not hot) Spray the scalp directly with the concoction. You can also spray the length of the braids with this, but be sure to massage the scalp only and rinse the hair really well. Next, it's time for deep conditioning. I use the spray bottle method mentioned above, but I focus more on the length of the braids instead of the scalp. Be sure to use a conditioner that is actually a deep conditioner, and not just a cheapie pour in and wash out conditioner. Now, you need for the conditioner to penetrate your hair shafts, so you need to stuff all of those extensions into a processing cap, at my house, we call them grocery bags. I keep my hair under the bag from 15-60 minutes, and work up some body heat by taking a hot shower; exercising; or you can sit under a hooded dryer. Rinse the hair with cool water. It's not as important to rinse completely, it's actually good to leave a little conditioner behind. The last step is to moisturize the braids. Sweet Nature Growth Spray is one of the BEST braid sprays. It's made of a blend of 7 natural oils, Aloe Vera Juice and 3 all natural herbs. This spray doesn't only leave the hair moisturized, but it awakens the scalp with every use. The hair should
be moisturized daily, especially if step one (ACV dipping) is skipped. It's also important to make sure the entire length of your hair is well moisturized and not only scalp. If you use this process weekly, when you take your extensions out, not only will you lose less hair, but you will grow more hair because of the direct access you have to your scalp.. Your hair will also be easier to comb and manage as well as much softer and healthier. I am a healthy hair care specialist, creator of Sweet Nature by Eddie comprehensive healthy hair care system, author of Relaxed or Natural, You Can Have Beautiful, Healthy Hair, and the owner of http://www.fabulousblackwoman.com. Since 2010, her decision to be bald has been more than compromising. “I no longer wanted to put this stress on myself trying to be what society said beauty was...I wanted to define my own true beauty, I wanted to find myself so cutting my hair off was like freeing myself from my past and starting over with this new me.” While modeling in Atlanta, she experienced some contradictions in the field as well as in relationships. Her profound look may have discouraged others but she allowed it to build more confidence within her journey.

The Bald Movement was created to uplift and inspire. Founded on December 12, 2012, the organization has been determined to move the souls of girls and women that share her experience. Although many women make the choice to become bald, some are forced to accept not having hair, this includes women with auto-immune diseases and unexpected dilemmas such as alopecia. It is Ms. Coleman’s priority to assist in embracing such a transformation. So far, the organization has been marketed online and she looks forward to speaking and working with similar groups to welcome the exceptional look.
Ms. Coleman plans to continue building the organization, with plans to create an international awareness while pursuing her dreams as a model to show that hair is not the necessity for beauty, You are.
“I teach women through my past experiences how to love themselves and how to embrace being bald. We want to instill that even though you lose your hair, it’s ok and understand that true beauty is defined by your character, by who you are....that’s what makes a woman beautiful, not her outer appearance. When your soul is beautiful, it makes you an attractive person to people around you.”

MWBH Beauty Company
S.A.L.T.Y. Cosmetics LLC was created by a long standing dream of Sarah Piccinini’s, but
with a 10 year Army career, a husband and 2 kids later and other dreams she wanted to accomplish, she never thought it could come true. As a licensed Cosmetologist, she decided in the summer of 2010 that she wanted to expand her career and study as an Esthetician. “I met a couple of amazing women in my Esthetics class while studying at Heritage College in Kansas City. We became FAST friends and came to realize during our makeup course that we all shared one passion MAKEUP!” They decided that they wanted to put that passion into something highly creative and do something for them and others that they knew everyone would enjoy. With a lot of prayer and Lord's blessing, their dreams started to fall into place. And one afternoon while trying to come up with a "clever" name to market our new business they realized that the first letter in each of our names spelled out SALTY! Sarah, Arnelle, Lacey, Tom and Yolanda.(Tom and Yolanda are my AMAZING parents) And S.A.L.T.Y. was born! Their mission was to provide custom blended, luxurious, hand crafted, safe mineral cosmetics of superior quality to women of all ages and ethnicities, and they did just that!
Our readers would like to know how S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics came about in the Beauty Industry and how did you come up with the name S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics? S.a.l.t.y was born out of my pure desire to have my own makeup line! I have been in love with makeup since I was 16 and wanted to get every color of eye shadow on my eye lid to coordinate with those hideous 80’s sweaters! LOL I would send away for those palettes from the magazines that had over a hundred eye shadows in them- back then you could only order through a magazine! As I got older and would be on the hunt for certain colors, textures and ingredients that agreed with my skin, I had a hard time finding what I was looking for. After going to cosmetology school and esthetics school my passion for makeup had grown into a force I could not hide from any more. I met an amazing group of women while in esthetics school, who also had a passion for makeup. We all became fast friends and I decided after another sleepless night of trying to squash this idea of a makeup line out of my head that I would face the fear and ask these ladies if they wanted to be part of my BIG idea! They said YES of course and we got to work right away! And every day during our lunch break at school we had a business meeting to decide on the direction of the company. Of course we needed a name…something clever, personal and easy to remember. We 66 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2014
were walking down the hallway one afternoon coming back from lunch and Arnelle blurts out… “What about Salty?”, I was like “Salty?” she said, yeah you know…all of the first letters of our names spelled out Salty! Sarah, Arnelle, Lacey, Tom and Yolanda. It was PERFECT! And S.a.l.t.y was born! In your product line you use Boron Nitride. Can you explain to our readers what is Boron Nitride and how it works on women with sensitive skin such as acne? Boron Nitride is a high grade luxury filler, which cuts down on the amount of dilution in our product. This filler is used to bind the particles tightly to the pigment to give you the strongest adhesion to the skin, which means HOURS of crease free, smooth wear time!! This filler also has several facets (faces) on one particle which means when the light hits it, it reflects off the facets and provides the client with a smooth, bright appearance. The appearance of fine lines and imperfections is diminished greatly and it has amazing oil controlling and antibacterial properties to keep your makeup germ free. But as with any ingredient any one can have skin sensitivities to any one ingredient. We find boron nitride to be the safest and have the least amount of skin irritations.
Are your cosmetic products tested on animals? We do NOT test on animals! We are our own guinea pigs! If we don’t trust the ingredient enough to use on our own skin…we don’t use it! As African-American and Bi-racial women, we have a hard time finding the right foundation, powder, and concealer to match our skin tones. Does S.A.L.TY Cosmetics provide custom blending and custom color for women of color? As a company with many diverse ethnic backgrounds we knew it was VERY important to offer our clients the best possible options to find foundations to match all skin tones. We offer custom blending on all of our products. What is S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics best known for in the beauty industry? Of course we are known for our insane custom blending abilities! But we are best know for our amazing eye shadow called- GlamaZOID! It is a ultra iridescent pigment that reflects different colors depending on your skin tone! It is truly THE perfect eye shadow for EVERYONE! It has been featured on ipsy.com, buzzfeed.com, and dailyglow.com just to name a few!
We love watching S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics makeup tutorials on YouTube. Can you tell our readers how often you do your makeup tutorials and how they can subscribe to your channel? We try to do a makeup tutorial at least once a month or more depending on how busy we are with orders. We do have a monthly web show called “LipSmack” where we talk about all things Salty, beauty tips and tricks, shoes and just fun stuff! We love it all! You can subscribe to our channel at:www.youtube.com/saltycosmetics In five years from now where do you see S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics at in the beauty industry? We have BIG plans for Salty! And even BIGGER ideas! In 5 years we hope we have our own store front! Where can our readers find S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics on social media networking and do you have a website? We are located on all major social media networks: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and YouTube. As of right now you can only purchase our products via our online shop at www.saltycosmetics.com 67 www.MidwestBlackHair.com

Making the Transition to Clean Eating By Jacquelyn Hollister
W
hen it comes to “eating clean”, the primary rule is to eliminate processed foods and eat more organic whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, lean cuts of meat, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes. When it comes to cooking, the preferred methods of cooking would be to bake, broil, or steam. If you love to cook and have the time, eating this way may not be a problem for you, however, some of us may find it difficult to make the transition to clean eating. I understand that some of us have busy lifestyles, which leaves little time for cooking. Due to this we oftentimes turn to convenience foods, which are usually loaded with high amounts of fat, sodium and sugar. The key to transitioning to clean
When reading a nutrition facts label, you want to start at the top where it provides the serving size, and the total servings within the container or package. In this example, the serving size is 1 slice, or 47g, and there are a total of 6 slices, or servings within the container. Note: It is important to remember that calorie and nutrient content is per serving. Next, check the total calories per serving. In this example there are 160 calories in 1 slice. Below that section, is more detailed information about the 68 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - June 2014
eating is to be patient, start where you’re at, and make gradual changes. Nutrition Facts Label You can begin by choosing healthier alternatives to the not so healthy foods that you currently enjoy. I’m sure many of you are familiar with the nutrition facts label, which is on most of the prepackaged foods that you currently buy, such as canned vegetables and fruits, other canned goods, breads, cereals, boxed meals, lunch meats, juices, soda, and snack foods. In order to choose healthier alternatives, it is important to know how to read the information on these labels.
nutrient content, including fat, cholesterol, sodium, dietary fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals You want to limit fat, cholesterol and sodium, which may have negative impact on your health, and you want to get enough fiber, vitamins and minerals, which may be beneficial to your health. In the far right column of the nutrition facts label are the Percent Daily Values (%DV). A quick guide to the %DV is the 5/20 rule. If a nutrient has a %DV of 5% or less, it is low in that nutrient. If a nutrient has a %DV of 20% or more, it is high in that nutrient. For example, total fat shows a %DV of 15%, and sodium shows a %DV of 12%. According to the 5/20 rule a nutrient with a
percent daily value of 5% or less is considered low in that nutrient, so if you are trying to limit fat and sodium in your diet, this item would probably not be a good choice. Note: There is no %DV for trans-fat or sugar, so keep your intake as low as possible. Ingredient Labels Another aspect of food labeling is the ingredients label. Ingredients are listed in descending order of weight (from most to least). The first two or three ingredients are the ones that the products contain the most of. At this point I want to share some guidelines for reading the ingredients label that will help you to make better food choices. Remember the Word “Whole” as in Whole Grains Especially for breakfast cereals, crackers, pasta, and breads, the word “whole” should appear as the first or second ingredient, whether whole wheat, oats, rye, or another grain. Look Out for Hidden Sugars, as in Fructose, Sucrose, and Dextrose Ingredients that end in the word “ose” are all forms of sugar, as are honey and corn sweeteners. To know exactly how many grams of total sugar a product contains, check out the nutrition facts label. Four to 5 grams of sugar is the equivalent of a level teaspoon. Look for Partially Hydrogenated Oils (Source of Trans Fats) Partially hydrogenated oils are the primary source of trans-fats, which have been shown to be potentially more harmful to arteries than saturated fat. Foods can call themselves “trans-fat free” even if they contain up to half a gram of trans fats per serving. Look on the ingredients list. If a food contains partially hydrogenated oils, it contains trans-fats. If that’s an item you only eat now and then, you don’t need to worry, but if it’s something you eat every day, it’s worth looking for a brand that does not contain this ingredient. Artificial Sweeteners, as in Sucralose, Saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame
In moderation, these ingredients can cut down on calories in foods like yogurt and beverages. But the Center for Science in the Public Interest warns that some artificial sweeteners can be dangerous in large quantities, so use them in moderation. Sodium Nitrite and Sodium Nitrate in Food Used as a preservative in meats, these chemicals may pose a cancer risk, although the evidence remains controversial. The Center for Science in the Public Interest recommends limiting the amount you consume by choosing nitrite-free products when possible. Artificial Colorings in Food These additives don’t add nutrient value, and some research suggests that some colorings may pose health dangers, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. The risk is admittedly small, however, and the evidence often inconclusive. Artificial colorings are often found in cereals, candies, sodas, and snack foods, especially those marketed to children. They will be noted on the ingredients list by their color name, such as Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Red 40, Red 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, and Orange B. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in Food Added to foods to enhance flavor, MSG has not been shown to pose a health risk, despite popular concerns about this additive. But some people do experi-
ence an unpleasant reaction, known as MSG symptom complex, which includes headache, flushing, sweating, fluttering heartbeat, and shortness of breath. Alright! At this point, you should now understand how to read the nutrition facts label, as well as what ingredients to look out for. Next time you go shopping, be sure to put what you have learned into practice. It is my hope that as you begin paying attention to nutrition facts labels and food ingredients, that you will gradually, and naturally, progress towards choosing healthier whole foods without the pressure.
