myths & benefits of Natural Hair By Ashiya Hudson

H

ave you contemplated the thought of wearing your natural hair but found yourself fearful of transitional phases and maintenance requirements? Are you tired of relaxers and desire a more natural approach to styling? Many African-American women have abandoned their relaxers for a natural look- that is void chemicals or relaxers. Although it has proven benefits, others sit on the sidelines and question if the transition and maintenance is worth it. Before dismissing the idea, you should learn about the myths and styling options available to make transitioning from a relaxer easier. The first myth is that everyone who transitions from a relaxer requires a "big chop." Although this may be recommended when there is extensive damage, those with longer hair may simply choose to allow their natural hair to outgrow the relaxed hair. Once this occurs, a person may be required to cut only the damaged hair while maintaining most of her length. Consulting with a professional hair stylist will help you to understand the best option to promote healthy growth. As it relate to styling, a great way to help with this transition and promote active growth is to simply braid your hair. Whether you decide to braid your hair or add extensions, these styles can be beautifully worn for all occasions. In addition, they require little maintenance, allow room for various styling options, and promote active hair growth.

34 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - March 2014

The second myth is that natural hair is easier to maintain. April McKisick, co-owner of Naturals, LLC, a company that specializes in creating natural hair care products, believes that natural hair requires just as much time as relaxed hair. She says, "Those who choose the natural route should understand that you are trading one type of maintenance for another. Finding the best products for your hair texture is important to keep hair hydrated and healthy. For example, adding natural oils and using shampoos without sulfate prevents excessive dryness that leads to dullness." Depending on the length of your hair, styling options may include but are not limited to the following: mini Afro, twists, and African locks. Although these may require less maintenance, it is important to make a concerted effort to maintain a healthy, neat appearance by using leave-in conditioners and getting regular trims to remove unhealthy hair. The third myth is the transitional phase from relaxed to natural is both difficult and unattractive. Although challenges exist, there are ways to create beautiful styles. With a little creativity, you can learn great techniques for styling and maintenance. For example, for very short hair, you may consider wearing waves and scrunches for a vintage look. If you are desire something more contemporary, quick weaves and

wigs are great for any hair length. Of course for a more casual look, ponytails, twists, and rolls are always timeless. As previously mentioned, braids are great for any occasion. Adding fun accessories such as combs, headbands, flowers, and scarfs can give you a great look for those 9-1-1 emergency hair days. Natural hair is very beautiful and uniquely captures the cultural spirit of African-American women. However, its beauty is often marred by controversy and challenges. Taking additional time to educate and explore options complimentary to personal styles is necessary to feel comfortable with natural hair. Article Source: The Myths and Benefits of Natural Hair

Know What Your Nails Can Reveal About Your Overall Wellbeing

Nails constitute an integral part of your health and body. Although often ignored and taken for granted, healthy, strong and pristine clear nails speak oodles about your internal health. Not to mention they adorn your hands and spruce up your personality. Â Often unhealthy and pale looking nails are a way in which your body informs you about the internal deficiencies or malfunctioning which might be happening inside it. Therefore, it is imperative that you pay attention to these signals and take better care of your nails. Ask yourself if these symptoms are appearing on your nails: Questions to Ask Yourself about Your Nail health #1 Are My Nails Turning Yellow? If this is the issue which you are observing on your nails, then it might be that you have put nail polish on them for a little too long. When artificial colors stay on the nails for prolonged periods of time, the natural color of your nails is

46 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - March 2014

By Nelson Homes

stripped off by the chemicals present in the nail polish. So, give your nails a breather! Do not remove one color and immediately paint it with some other. Yellow nails are also a sign of nail fungal infection or psoriasis. Sometimes if the body has been attacked by jaundice, then too the nails turn yellow. If so, consult a dermatologist. If you are chain smoker, then it could be another reason which is causing your nails to turn yellow. #2 Are My Nails Becoming Brittle? This is the most common nail condition which is observed among people. The deficiency of Vitamin A, B and C is the major cause for brittle and chipped nails which bend or break away at the drop of a hat! The nails which break away easily could also be a sign of calcium deficiency and lack of natural oils in the body. Load up on lots Omega 3 fatty acids by eating oily fish like salmon, tuna and lots of nuts. #3 Have My Nails Developed White Spots? This kind of symptom is also common; however this is not caused necessarily by any kind of deficiency in the body. White dots are usually the result of an injury - look for these signs if someone just pulverized your finger in between the door, or maybe you got your nails injured by a harsh pull of the cuticle while getting a manicure done. You can never remove them or buff them off even if they appear as removable. #4 Are The Nails Having Dark Lines? Look for this problem on your nails carefully. Although it usually appears on the nails of the people who are dark in complexion, at times it could be a sign of the developing moles in your nail beds. They not only look ugly, but could also be dangerous for your health. Moles may not be too harmful for your body but if they develop on the nail beds, they might require extra care. On the other hand, if there is just one dark vertical band on the nail, it could be a sign of skin cancer. Get that checked! #5 Do My Nails Look Hollow On The Surface? Have you ever seen your nails or someone else’s nails turning hollow on the surface as if a heavy scoop has been extracted from that outer area? Scooped out nails simply mean that the blood in your body is not reaching properly to the middle

area of the nails which is causing this hollow surface. Your body is surely lacking in a large quantity of iron. Also, at times the thyroid glands become inactive or rather less active and this could lead to hypothyroidism. And this disease also gets your nail into this condition. #6 Are There Depressions Running Across My Nails Horizontally? Very commonly called the Beau’s Lines, this condition usually appears when you have injured your finger. However, if injury has not taken place this could mean that you have developed diabetes in your body which is clearly become unmanageable and there are fluctuations happening in your circulatory system. Also, many a times these depressions occur because of pneumonia or mumps which need immediate medical attention. Either ways, this is a serious health issue which needs instant aid. How To Keep Nails Healthy •

Drink a lot of water

Consume other fluids like vegetable juices, milk and fruit juices

Have sufficient amount of Vitamin A by eating carrots, apples, spinach etc

Vitamin B is needed to boost your nail growth. Eat broccoli, spinach, cheese, yogurt and bell peppers

Take Vitamin E and Omega 3 sufficiently by eating nuts, avocados, olive oil, oily fish and bananas

Proteins and calcium taken from dairy products and lean meat I ideal for keeping nails healthy

Homemade

Beauty Products for Beautiful Skin, Hair and Nails Human beings are visual creatures and that is why physical beauty is such a big deal for both men and women. Cosmetic companies from all over the world have cashed in on the demand for beauty products, and some of the products are quite expensive. However, individuals can save a lot of money during hard economic times by using beauty products that can be found in the comfort of their own home. All they have to know is the various tips and methods of preparation and they will be on their way to smoother and healthier skin and hair. Individuals who would like to make a home-made facial or scrub can use oatmeal and yogurt. Oatmeal is known for its smoothening as well as exfoliating properties. It is also great for sensitive skin that is easily irritated. The individual simply has to create a mixture of these two ingredients and gently apply it on their face. They should then rinse off with warm water and dry their face with a towel. One can also make a facial mask using bananas, rolled oats, honey and milk. They should mix these ingredients together for about ten minutes before applying on the face. They should massage the mixture onto the face and allow it to sit for about five minutes before rinsing off with warm water. They will definitely notice the difference as their skin will be smoother and more radiant. Mashed grapes and almond flour can work great as a facial mask. Aloe vera gel on the other hand can be used to thicken and strengthen one's hair. The individual simply has to massage the gel into their scalp and leave it for fifteen minutes before rinsing off. 52 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - March 2014

Most of these ingredients can be mixed in extra quantities in order to make a scrub or cleanser for the whole body. Vanilla extracts can be added into the scrub formula for individuals who would like to smell great after the beauty treatment. Men or women with swollen eyelids can try cutting potatoes or cucumbers into circles and placing them on their eyes for about ten minutes in the morning and the evening. Both potatoes and cucumbers have a cooling effect that will help to reduce the swelling.

Individuals who have chapped hands during the cold winter months and who cannot afford to buy expensive moisturizer can wash their hands with oatmeal. The oatmeal will help to soften the skin on their hands. Lemon juice is a great nail cleanser, whitener and hardener. It can also help to remove dried cuticles. An individual can soak their nails in lemon juice for a few minutes. They can then rinse off their hands and apply moisturizer for a great effect. Homemade beauty products are cheap and very easy to make. This is because most of the ingredients can be found in the kitchen cabinets or refrigerator. Furthermore, they are preferred because the individual does not have to worry about allergic reactions due to chemicals. This is because they are always aware of all the ingredients that were used to make the products.

Shopping Tips To Keep Your Cost Down

1. Coupons, Coupons, Coupons!

The art of couponing is an oldie but goodie. Shopping the weekly newspaper and now online, is a great way of finding coupons to save on your favorite hair and beauty products. Be sure to pay close attention to the small print which may contain some restrictions as well as the expiration date of the coupon.

2. Shop in Bulk

If you have a favorite product that you know works wonders for you, buy it in larger quantities. You usually get a slightly lower price when buying the large quantities, and this will help you out in the long run. Also, if you find that item on sale, that is a good time to stock up while the price is low.

3. “Swap Meet”

Have you ever bought tons of hair product or a skin product that just didn’t quite work for you? Instead of throwing all of the unused product away, swap it with someone else! There are tons of meet up groups around the country that do this very thing. And not only do you come out with a new product to try for no money out of your pocket, you also have a chance to network and meet new people.

4. Try it Before You Invest

This tip goes along with the last tip. When trying a new product, try the sample size to make sure it is what you are looking for and works for you. Once you find something that is the perfect match, THEN you do #2- Shop in Bulk. Make your dollars count! 54 MIDWEST BLACK HAIR MAGAZINE - March 2014

I am on a strict budget, but want to find a way to fit my Salon Visits into my budget... Is this you? Well have no fear, we have some tips that will help you. • Spread your salon visits out. Instead of going every 2 weeks for a style, try going once a month or every 6 weeks and adding a deep conditioner to your regimen. So even though you may not be going as often, your hair still stays healthy. • Another tip is to choose hairstyles that will last longer. Some of these hairstyle options may consist of sew-in extensions instead of a quick weave, or getting a silk wrap which will keep your hair flowing and bouncy. • Also, communication is key. Let your stylist know what is going on and what your budget is. They will be able to design a schedule with appropriate services to fit within your budget and keep you happy and comfortable.

S

o, I’m in a training class at my day job and during break I decide to pull out my book, The Low GI Diet Revolution: The Definitive Science-Based Weight Loss Plan by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller. As I’m reading, one of my co-workers appears to have caught a glimpse of the front cover then comments, “You don’t need to go on a diet!” I simply respond that I’m not looking to “go on” a diet, just exploring a different way of eating. There is a major misconception surrounding the word “diet”. Simply put, dieting is a way of eating that can either be temporary or long-term, and can either be harmful or beneficial to one’s health. The negative connotations of the word diet come from the popular thought that a diet is something that you “go on” or “off

of ”. Because of this popular thought, it appears that a more acceptable term was created—Lifestyle change. When one thinks “lifestyle change”, one is more likely to think long-term, which is the goal when promoting changes that will have a positive effect on our quality of life as we age. The foods we eat play a major part in our long-term health, and so it is important that we find a healthy way of eating that works for us on a long-term basis. There are so many dietary theories out there, and while one may work for one person, it may not work well for another. I encourage you to draw on your personal experience with food as you do your own research on the different diets out there, and to choose one that resonates with you; or take different aspects

of several diets that resonate with you to create your own personal way of eating.
